road closures due to president visit

Expect road closures during President Biden's visit

Parts of Interstate 81 will be closed before and after President Joe Biden's arrival at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport.

*** Updated 11:32 a.m., April 16: President Joe Biden's public schedule shows an estimated arrival time of 1 p.m. at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. Motorists should expect road closures between the airport and Scranton leading up to and immediately following that time.

Biden's schedule also lists campaign events at 2 p.m. and another at 5:40 p.m. in Scranton.

The Scranton Police Department yesterday instructed residents to "avoid travel downtown" on Tuesday without further details.

**** President Joe Biden's visit to the Scranton area will result in temporary road closures Tuesday and Wednesday.

The president is expected to land at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP) in the early afternoon Tues. That means Interstate 81 North and Southbound will be closed for parts of midday just before and after his arrival.

The president’s motorcade will take him into downtown Scranton, where he’s slated to give remarks around 2 p.m. at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple on North Washington Avenue. The blocks surrounding the Cultural Center are expected to be closed off in the hours before and shortly after his speech.

Biden will stay overnight in the area, so parts of downtown Scranton may be off limits to vehicle traffic until Wednesday. The president will travel to Pittsburgh then Philadelphia later this week.

Scranton's Marywood University moved classes online Tuesday from noon onward. The City of Scranton also announced trash and recycling pickups would be postponed Tuesday. Biden's visit will "cause service delays from the Department of Public Works (DPW)," a spokesperson said in an email. "Residents should place recycling out for pickup Tuesday afternoon or evening for Wednesday morning."

Neighboring Dunmore Borough announced no parking on parts of Electric Street on Tues. In a statement on social media, Dunmore Police shared the following message:

"Tuesday, April 16, Parking will NOT be permitted on Electric Street from N. Washington Avenue to N. Blakely Street for security reasons, due to the Presidential visit to our area. Any vehicle located in this no parking zone WILL be towed. Thank you for your cooperation."

A PennDOT spokesperson said Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) will handle interstate closures. WVIA News will provide updates from PSP as we receive details.

Where is President Biden visiting in Milwaukee? Are there any road closures? What you need to know.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

President Joe Biden is traveling to Milwaukee Aug. 15 to speak about his administration's plan to boost the economy. The stop comes just a week before Republicans arrive in Milwaukee for the GOP's first presidential primary debate on Aug. 23.

Where is Biden speaking?

Biden will deliver his speech at Ingeteam Inc. , located in the Menomonee Valley at 3550 W Canal St.

What is Ingeteam Inc.?

Ingeteam Inc. is a manufacturer specializing in electric power conversion and a popular campaign stop for Democrats .

Ingeteam Inc. announced earlier this year it would increase production of electric vehicle chargers in support of the Biden administration's goal to build a network of 500,000 EV chargers along America's highways.

When will Biden speak?

Biden is expected to arrive in Milwaukee on Aug. 15 around 11:25 a.m. and will speak at Ingeteam Inc. around 1p.m. He is expected to depart Milwaukee around 2:20 p.m.

What will Biden talk about?

Biden will deliver remarks "on how Bidenomics is investing in America to grow the economy from the middle out and the bottom up, not the top down,” according to a release from the White House.

Will there be any road closures?

Biden will be going to Ingeteam Inc. around 11:25 a.m. and will depart around 2:20 p.m. The Milwaukee Police Department said to expect delays around that area but will not provide any further details on the route.

A Department of Public Works spokesman indicated the following roads will be closed during his visit:

Both sides of W. Canal St. from W. Roundhouse Rd. to the Brewers Way on ramp.

Both sides of N. Milwaukee Rd between Selig Dr. and S 36th St.

Lawrence Andrea contributed to this report.

Chicago resident, Blaise Davis, has been enjoying his first trip to Philadelphia but has also noticed a whole lot of security around Independence Mall.

"There's quite a bit of blockade and law enforcement. That's why I'm riding a bike, not driving around. It's hard to get around, makes it a little easier," Blaise said.

Street closures in effect ahead of President Biden's visit to Milwaukee

road closures due to president visit

MILWAUKEE — Street closures are in effect in downtown Milwaukee in advance of President Joe Biden's visit Tuesday.

Wells Street is closed to street traffic between Plankinton Avenue and Water Street. The city's public works department says these closures will stay in place until 12 a.m. Wednesday.

Wells Street is still open to pedestrian traffic.

As early as Friday night, trucks could be seen parked in front of the Pabst Theater, where CNN will host a town hall with the President.

This is the President's first trip since taking office.

Across the street from the Pabst is the restaurant China Gourmet. Owner Robert Tsao said he wasn't sure how the street closure would impact his customers.

He said he relies mostly on takeout and has to remind delivery drivers to pick up the orders at his back alley. He said he does plan to be open for business Tuesday night.

Tsao says his restaurant has been on Wells Street since 2007. He has relied on theater district traffic, so the pandemic has been especially difficult.

At last check the Pabst is expecting to host 50 to 75 people for the town hall event. It is invite-only.

"It's a great opportunity to show the city the things we have in our city, and we're proud of them," said the CEO of the Pabst Theater Group Gary Witt last week.

The town hall event will take place at 8 p.m. central time, according to CNN .

The event was originally slated for 7 p.m. central time, which is the same time as Gov. Tony Evers is scheduled to present his budget address.

The Republican Party of Wisconsin pointed that out in a statement its executive director released last week.

"It is telling that President Biden has decided to counter-program a governor from his own party," WisGOP Executive Director Mark Jefferson said. "Either the White House isn’t communicating with Democrat governors, or the Democrats realized that it is in Gov. Evers’ best interest for no one to watch him unveil this budget.“

Traffic disruptions anticipated ahead of Trump’s Lehigh Valley visit (UPDATE)

  • Updated: Apr. 11, 2024, 11:40 a.m. |

Former President Donald Trump speaks at the 2024 Outdoor Show

Former President Donald Trump speaks at the 2024 Outdoor Show in Harrisburg on Feb. 9, 2024.

  • Pamela Sroka-Holzmann | For lehighvalleylive.com

UPDATE: Trump is coming back to the Lehigh Valley. Here’s how to see him and what to expect.

Multiple traffic disruptions are expected Saturday in portions of the region ahead of former President Donald Trump’s visit to North Whitehall Township , Pennsylvania State Police said Wednesday.

The former president at 7 p.m. plans to take the floor at Schnecksville Fire Hall, 4550 Old Packhouse Road, his campaign announced last week. Doors to the event open at 3 p.m. Tickets were made available at donaldjtrump.com .

Trooper Nathan Branosky, state police public information officer for Troop M in Bethlehem, stated in a news release motorists will need to take extra precaution from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday and anticipate delays, as well as intermittent road closures. The following roadways are expected to be impacted:

  • Route 22 East and West.
  • Route 309 North and South — to the area of Route 873.
  • Old Packhouse Road in the township’s Schnecksville section.

Some traffic disruptions will impact secondary roads throughout the region, state police anticipate. Signs will be posted instructing motorists on various traffic conditions. Motorists also can check the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s 511pa.com traffic website for the most updated travel conditions.

The anticipated gridlock already caused Shankweiler’s Drive-In theater, 4540 Shankweiler Road in North Whitehall, to postpone its 90th anniversary celebration. That event has since been moved from Saturday to Sunday, according to the business’ Facebook page.

Trump appearedin south-central Pennsylvania on Feb. 9 when he spoke at a National Rifle Association event during the Great American Outdoors Show in Harrisburg.

He last came to the Lehigh Valley as president in October 2020 when he visited HoverTech International in Hanover Township, Northampton County. His daughter, Ivanka Trump, in November 2016 also campaigned for her father — just days before that presidential election — at the Best Western at Routes 22 and 512 in Hanover Township, Northampton County.

Trump’s local visit comes just two days before the scheduled start of his criminal trial in New York in a hush money case involving the adult film star, Stormy Daniels, according to published reports.

Pennsylvania is a critical battleground state in presidential races. It’s expected both Trump and President Joe Biden, who won the state by 80,500 votes in 2020, will heavily target the state on the campaign trail.
