Whether you’re a beginner or more experienced, snowshoeing offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the snowy terrain at your own pace.

Imagine zooming down the snowy hills on a sled, feeling the wind in your hair and the thrill in your heart. Wengen has got you covered with several epic sledding hills, and the best ones are near the Männlichen railway station.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a sled because you can easily rent one from the shops in town. So gather your crew, get your adrenaline pumping, and let the good times roll as you slide, spin, and laugh your way down the slopes.

Wengen, Switzerland: Travel Guide and Things to do

Wengen, Switzerland is one of those picture-perfect villages that you might envision when someone mentions the Swiss Alps. No cars, mountains all around, lush green meadows, and vast expanses of forests are all qualities that Wengen boasts.

Wengen is located in the canton of Bern and is a part of the famous Jungfrau region . Great for hiking all year long and skiing during the winter, this quaint village will serve as your perfect getaway with its fairy-tale backdrop.

Wooden chalets, whitewashed churches, and Belle Époque hotels surrounded by mountain pines are all things you will get to experience here.

With that said, let’s jump right into this travel guide for Wengen in Switzerland and explore all the things you can do here.

About Wengen and best time to visit

Perched high above the Lauterbrunnen valley at an altitude of 1274m, Wengen is a fashionable yet traditional alpine village in the Bernese Oberland. It can only be reached by cogwheel train, making it traffic-free. Thanks to the absence of traffic, the village boasts pure mountain air.

Wengen Village above the Lauterbrunnenvalley in summer

The local scenery of Wengen provides views of the entire Alps including the famous Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains.

There are over 500km of walking trails that are marked for guidance. 15 mountain cableways in the nearby surroundings lead to the most beautiful vantage points of the Jungfrau region.

Apart from its spectacular Alpine scenery, what adds to Wengen’s uniqueness is that it is an entirely car-free village. To reach it, you have to take the Wengeralp railway ascending up the mountain. This characteristic adds to the region’s calming appeal.

When it comes to dining in, there is no shortage of options in Wengen. Most of the restaurants are located within hotels which means you won’t have to look far for quality food.

There is plenty to do in both the winter and summer months.

Wengen in summer

In summers, you can enjoy hikes up and around the mountains at varying difficulty levels. There are many easy day hikes for children, making Wengen a nice family-friendly destination.

While the resort is open for tourists year-round, the best time to visit Wengen is in June to October. The weather hovers around 20°C (64°F), and rain is scarce so you get plenty of sunshine.

Wengen in winter

The most popular months, however, are the snowy months of December to March which attract twice as many tourists as the summer. The weather is freezing which is perfect for snowboarding, skiing, and other winter sports.

During the winter, Wengen is the ideal starting point for the family-friendly ski region of Klein Scheidegg-Männlichen with 110km of easy to medium-difficulty pistes. The neighboring ski areas of the Jungfrau region are also close by.

For many, the world-renowned Word Cup Race down the Lauberhorn to Wengen is the highlight of the FIS ski race season.

Excursion to the jungfraujoch.

The Jungfraujoch lies between the two peaks of Jungfrau and Monch and connects them at a height of 3464 meters above sea level.

The ascent to the highest train station in Europe at Jungfraujoch, starts at Wengen station and then on to Kleine Scheidegg. Here you board the Jungfraubahn for the final journey to the Top of Europe.

While the ride to the top offers no shortage of breathtaking scenery, the views from the top itself are especially mesmerizing. Get ready to be amazed by the insane snowy views of the 22 km Aletsch Glacier and those of the towering mountain peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

The day tour to Jungfraujoch costs around $170 and takes you to the top of the mountain. From where you can view the UNESCO-listed landscape from the Sphinx Observatory along with other summit attractions, and multiple indoor activities such as the Ice Palace.

Explore the Lauterbrunnen Valley

Often referred to as “Valley of 72 Waterfalls”, Lauterbrunnen is nestled between jagged cliffs and the towering mountains of the Swiss Alps. The famous writer J.R.R. Tolkien found his inspiration for his saga, while hiking through the Swiss Alps and the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Any fan of the Lord of the Rings will immediately feel like they’ve been thrust into Middle-Earth as soon as they make their way through Lauterbrunnen’s steep rock faces.

Scenic view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Summer

On your visit, don’t skip visiting the village Lauterbrunnen itself. You will get a truly authentic experience of a typical Swiss village. The town might be small in size, but it’s certainly immense in its beauty. The village streets are lined with charming restaurants, cafés, hotels, varying shops.

Small and large waterfalls alike are visible from Lauterbrunnen. Many of them are easy to reach, like the Staubbach waterfall. Standing tall at 300 meters, it is the third-highest waterfall in Switzerland and one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in all of Europe.

Thanks to a viewing platform built into the rockface, one can get nearer and experience the glory of this waterfall up close.

Skiing in Winter

Skiing is a popular sport in Wengen. Thanks to its elevation of 1274 m above sea level, the chances of finding snow here is high, especially from late December to early March.

The easily accessible Jungfrau region offers more than 250km of pistes, with many of them providing a heightened level of adrenaline rush. There are also toboggan and walking trails. Therefore, everyone has a chance to enjoy the snowy winter here.

Ski racer on the Lauberhorn Piste in Wengen

On the other side of the valley lies Mürren where in January the Inferno race takes place.

It’s one of the largest ski races in the world with over 1800 participants. The Inferno race spans a distance of almost 9 miles down the mountain – going from Schilthorn to Lauterbrunnen.

There is also an 11km cross-country ski trail in the valley between Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg.

The Männlichen is a mountain located in the heart of the Jungfrau region at an impressive height of 2343m. Visitors can access the roof of the cable car from Wengen, enjoying the 6-minute ride that is known as the “Royal Ride.”

Once off the cable car or gondola, you will have beautiful views of the Jungfrau region and all its major mountains.

Männlichen is the starting point for several easy trails that offer some of the best views. You can hike for 25 minutes to the actual summit of the Männlichen itself. This is called the “Royal Walk.” The summit affords you panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountains, which seem to tower over you.

You can also hike from Männlichen to Klein Scheidegg. This route is quite easy with only minor ascents and descents. The hike is suitable for families with small children and for people who want to walk high in the mountains with ease.

Panoramaweg hiking path from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg

As the trail is quite beautiful with many alpine flowers in the summers, it is very popular among tourists, making it rather crowded on beautiful sunny days.

To reach Männlichen, you can take the Wengen-Männlichen cable car ride from the Wengen station which lasts 10 minutes. Along the way, you will be treated to magnificent views of the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Kleine Scheidegg

Kleine Scheidegg is located at a high altitude of 2061m. It is a mountain pass that runs between the famous Eiger and the Lauberhorn. It is located above the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys and the two cogwheel railways from these places meet here.

Hiking at Kleine Scheidegg is quite popular in the summer with travelers from all over the world paying this scenic area a visit. It also serves as the final stopping point during the Jungfrau Marathon – a mountain race that occurs every year.

For lovers of hiking, this would be the perfect place to be as they would be surrounded by the superlative vistas of the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys.

Kleine Scheidegg offers its fair share of fun activities and winter sports to its visitors. In December, the skiing season begins. Visitors can ski and snowboard down the graceful slopes of the Kleine Scheidegg.

Challenge yourself at Lauberhorn Crazy Golf

The Lauberhorn Crazy Golf can make for an entertaining afternoon for families and solo travelers alike. It is an 18-hole course that depicts select stories from the ski race in Lauberhorn – a race that is one of the most prominent winter sports in the world.

The Lauberhorn Crazy Golf is especially great for people traveling with kids. You have the option of miniature golf to fill your day in Wengen where all ages are welcome. This is a must-visit spot if you want a fun-filled afternoon in Wengen!

Where to stay in Wengen

Wengen is a popular destination with people seeking peace and quiet in the Alps. Being a fairly small town, most of the hotels in Wengen are within walking distance from the train station from where most day trips start.

Of course, there are some hotels with locations that are more central than others. If you happen to stay in a hotel that is farther away, the hotel staff can pick you up and your luggage from the station.

Below, we have mentioned a few stay options, from budget-friendly to luxury.

Wengen, Aparthotel Residence Bernerhof

An affordable option, Residence Bernerhof is the aparthotel of the Hotel Bernerhof. It offers apartments that boast private kitchenettes and bathrooms. If you want to stay in the center of Wengen without going heavy on the wallet, this is a great option. It is also close to all modes of transportation including the railway and the cableway.

Wengen, Swiss Lodge Hotel Bernerhof

Hotel Bernerhof is another great budget option that offers basic rooms in the center of Wengen. All facilities, such as stores, the cableway, and the railway station are within a few minutes of walk from the hotel.

Wengen, Hotel & Spa Silberhorn

Hotel Silberhorn is located next to the Wengen railway station, making it a convenient spot to stay in. The hotel offers a number of amenities. It has a fabulous restaurant, a spa and wellness area, a jewelry shop, fitness facilities, and, most important of all, rooms that afford you spectacular views of the Jungfrau region.

Summary & Final Thoughts

Wengen, Switzerland serves as the ideal starting point for exploring the Bernese Oberland. It is a fantastic destination with plenty of mountain scenery and peaceful hikes.

Along with the calming atmosphere of the village, the adventurous side of Wengen includes plenty of skiing and fast-paced sports options, giving visitors the best of both worlds.

With so much to experience, Wengen is a one-stop shop for explorers, adventurers, and thrill-seekers alike.

The holiday resort lies on a wind-protected sun terrace at the foot of the Jungfrau, 400 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley at an altitude of 1274 m. The tradition-imbued, car-free holiday resort offers a family-friendly ski and rambling area around the Männlichen and the Kleine Scheidegg.

Description

With its nostalgic timber houses, the many dispersed holiday chalets and hotels dating from the belle époque period, this Bernese Oberland holiday resort has retained all the character of a picture-postcard mountain village. Opening widely to the south west, the terrace guarantees above-average hours of sunshine. Since 1893, car-free Wengen has been able to be reached from Lauterbrunnen  via the Wengernalp railway; cars remain parked in Lauterbrunnen. The key excursion destinations within the Jungfrau region  can all be reached easily from Wengen. Climbers on the Eiger north face – one of the world’s most spectacular and difficult climbing faces – can be observed by telescope from the Kleine Scheidegg . Provided you change trains on the Kleine Scheidegg, the Jungfraujoch  can even be reached by railway. And you can reach the Schilthorn  summit from the valley floor resort of Lauterbrunnen via Mürren  or Stechelberg .

In winter, Wengen is the ideal starting point for the family-friendly ski region of Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen with 110 km of predominantly easy to medium-difficulty pistes, and the renowned World Cup piste on the Lauberhorn  as its crowning glory. The neighbouring ski areas of the Jungfrau region, Grindelwald -First and Mürren-Schilthorn are also readily accessible. The clean air, the long hours of sunshine – especially in winter – the toboggan runs and around 50 km of winter hiking trails also serve to attract non-skiers to the sunny resort.

Over 500 km of marked walking trails and 15 mountain cableways in the nearby surroundings lead to the most beautiful vantage points of the Jungfrau region; take for example the classic panorama route between Wengen and the Kleine Scheidegg, which offers up a particularly impressive view of the rock massif of the Eiger, Mönch  and Jungfrau . Those who like things a bit more spirited might like to try their skill at paragliding, river rafting or canyoning. But for eye-popping amazement, you should walk the Eiger Trail  at the foot of the Eiger north face, a medium-difficulty mountain walking tour.

Where is Wengen?

Wengen is a stunning little mountain village, located at 4180 feet just above Lauterbrunnen.   You can’t take your vehicle to Wengen as there are no public access roads, so the only way to get to Wengen is via cog railway or hiking trail.

There are a broad range of activities to do in the Wengen Village such as ski, snowboard and hiking, but also given how charming the village is, it’s a lovely place to simply relax.  However below I have detailed some of the activities you can enjoy whilst taking your holidays in Wengen as well as some tips on some day trips.

1. Skiing and Sledding

What to do in Wengen

If you’re new to skiing or want to improve on your skills, there are a range of snow schools in Wengen as well as some smaller ski slopes which are perfect for both skiing and sledding.  The slopes within the village where plenty big enough for Myla and I to sled on.

However, if you’re skills are a little more advance then ours, there are 206 kilometres of ski slopes around Wengen in the nearby areas of Grindelwald-First, Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen and Murren-Schilthron:

  • Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen : (Pictured above) This region has over 100 kms of slopes and 30 kms of sled runs and hiking trails. This area is very close to Wengen and easy to reach by cog railway or cable car from Wengen.
  • Grindelwald-First : This region has over 60 kms of slops and 40 kms of paths and sled runs and is best reached by cable car from Grindelwald.
  • Murren-Schilthron : At 3000m above sea level this is the highest ski region in the region and includes 51 kms of ski slopes. From Wengen, this ski area is reached by a combination of cog rail and cable car.

You can hire everything you need including snow gear right from within the Wengen Village.   We hired a sled and snow clothes for Myla for a few days which was well worth it. It was super fun taking the sled out whenever we went into town.  Our hotel was at the bottom of a hill so it was great fun at the end of the day sledding home.

Get tips for skiing with a baby here or click here for tips on teaching toddlers to ski.

  2. Day Trip to Schilthorn – Piz Goria

Day trips from Wengen - Schilthorn

A great day trip from Wengen is to visit Schilthorn, the mountain which has been made famous in the 007 Bond “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”.Getting to Schilthorn from Wengen you will need to take the cog wheel train down to Lauterbrunnen and then a bus to Stechelberg which is where the terminal is for the cable cars up to Schilthorn.

The journey is super easy, just download the SBB Mobile App and use this to map out the trip.

There are various stops at Schilthorn with plenty to see at each one:

  • Piz Gloria : At 2970 m above sea level, this is the very top. Here you will find fantastic views of the Swiss Skyline including views of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau.  This is also where you will find Bond World, which surprisingly is pretty cool, it’s very interactive and great for the entire family.
  • Birg : This is the middle stop and includes the Skyline/Thrill Walk – which is a path way that clings to the cliff face.  There are various paths to choose from including some made from glass and grates for that added adrenaline rush.  There is also an igloo here where you can have a drink or something to eat.
  • Murren : The first stop on route which is great for those wanting to explore the village of Murren or go sledding.

When we went recently in winter, it was heavily snowing and so we didn’t get to see too much of the view.  Nevertheless, what we could see was absolutely spectacular.

We spent a few hours here exploring each cable car stop as well as having lunch.

Tickets to Schilthron are not cheap!  From Lauterbrunnen an adult ticket will set you back 105 CHF and a child ticket is 52.50 CHF – click here to purchase tickets online.

However if you have Swiss Travel Pass s the entire trip will be covered!  Yep that’s right completely free!!  Click here to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass and save!!!

3. Day Trip to Jungfraujoch

Lucerne Jungfrau Tour

One of the most popular mountain day trips in Switzerland is a Jungfrau tour to the Top of Europe.   You can take the top of Europe train to Europe’s highest train station at 3500 m above sea level which is nestled among ice, snow and rocks.

Getting to Jungfraujoch from Wengen is pretty easy, as all you need to do is take the train to nearby Kleine Scheidegg.  From Kleine Scheidegg you will take the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch.    Download the SBB Mobile App and use this to map out the trip.

The journey on the cogwheel train to Jungfraujoch is spectacular in itself.  No matter what time of the year, winter or summer the views are amazing.  I’ve been at both times of the year and was just in awe of the views.

Once you reach the top there is plenty of things to do in Jungfraujoch including:

  • Snow Fun Park : enjoy various activities such as snow tubing, sledding, flying fox, snowboarding and skiing. Everything you need can be hired right here;
  • Alpine Sensation : Shows the history of the Jungfrau Railway as well as a memorial to the miners who lost their lives in building the railway;
  • Sphinx Observation Terrace : Take the lift to the summit and experience out of this world panoramic views across the Aletsch Glacier – Europe’s longest glacier as well as snow-capped mountain peaks from neighbouring countries and the world-famous triple peaks of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau; and
  • Ice Palace : stroll through the ice tunnels which were first created in 1930 by mountain guides with nothing more than ice picks. These tunnels go right through the Aletsch Glacier and feature various ice sculptures.

Please note that some of the Jungfraujoch activities may be closed due to weather conditions. When we went recently in winter it didn’t take us too long to go through all the attractions, as things like the Snow Fun Park are closed.  I think we spent around 2 hours exploring the attractions.  However when I went some years ago during the summer months we easily spent a few hours just playing in the snow park.

Family Friendly Wengen Hotels

When it comes where to stay in Wengen, given it’s such a small village, pretty much anywhere is going to be fine, however the closer you can stay the main street is probably best.   Just be aware there really are no cheap hotels in Wengen.

Below I have listed three different hotels that I believe to be some of the best hotels in Wengen for families.  I’ve recommended these places to stay in Wengen based on their ability to adequately accommodate a family of 2 adults and 2 children, having private bathroom facilities as well as being in a reasonably central location.

It’s also good to note here that when staying in Wengen, each visitor must pay a visitor’s tax.   The tax is a nightly rate and is 3.30 CHF per adult and 1.80 CHF per child between the ages of 6-16. In return you do receive a local guest card which gives you the following reductions:

  • Tennis courts 15%
  • Outdoor swimming pool 25%
  • Mini Golf 10%

Getting to Wengen

The nearest airport to Wengen is in Bern, so you will most likely be getting to Wengen by train either from Bern airport or somewhere else within Switzerland. Once you arrive at Interlaken Ost you will need to take a twenty minute train ride to Lauterbrunnen, which depart every 30 minutes.

From Lauterbrunnen you will take the cog wheel train to Wengen which only takes another 12 minutes and trains depart every 30 minutes.Once you arrive in Wengen, you can just walk to your hotel or there are some taxi’s in the village. We arrived in Wengen by train from Lucerne.

We were traveling around Switzerland with Swiss Travel Passes which I highly recommend as it will save you a tonne on transportation as well as provide entry to a range of attractions.  Click here to read our post on why we recommend the Swiss Travel Pass.

Alternatively click here to see the range of Swiss Travel Passes available.

Getting Around Wengen

As mentioned above, Wengen is a super tiny, no car village so to get around you simply walk. However, if you’d like to visit any nearby villages, like anywhere in Europe it is super easy to get around.   In fact, we found Switzerland has some of the best public transportation and you can get to the most off the track places with ease.

From Wengen you will need to take a combination of cog wheel rail, buses and cable cars to visit nearby villages.  Just download the SBB Mobile App and use this to plan your trips. If you have the Swiss Travel Passes, like I mentioned above (do yourself a favour a buy these!!!) you can travel pretty much anywhere for free – I say pretty much anywhere – as you do need to pay extra to travel past Wengen up the mountain.

Wengen: Our Verdict

Wengen is such a gorgeous town!  Located right among the gorgeous Swiss Alps, it looks like a village directly from a fairy tale! It was just so much fun walking through the snow, playing in the snow and taking our sled everywhere we went and then Myla and I rode the sled down the hill to our Wengen accommodation.  Honestly the two of us have never had so much fun together. It’s not an overly big place, so you only need a few days to see explore it, but there are plenty of great day trips from Wengen was well. We absolutely loved Wengen and can’t recommend it enough!

Excursion destinations from Wengen

Wengen is reached by funicular from Lauterbrunnen . Another funicular goes from Wengen to Allmend. The cable car takes visitors up to Männlichen. This way you are well connected in Wengen in all directions.

You can reach Männlichen with the Wengen Männlichen cable car. In addition to the fantastic view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the summit offers many leisure activities. In summer it invites you to go hiking. High altitude hikes to Alpiglen or to Kleine Scheidegg are popular.

Families will enjoy the Royal Walk and the Liselotte theme trail. A Senn playground and a hiking trail with 13 play stations await little explorers. In winter there are best winter sports possibilities for skiers and snowboarders.

The Jungfraujoch is part of the UNESCO World Heritage region Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschorn. At 3,454 meters above sea level, it is the highest railroad station in Europe.

The perpetual snow on the plateau allows opportunities for winter hikes even in high summer. With the Sphinx observation building, the Jungfraujoch at 3,571 meters offers a fantastic view. The attractions also include the Ice Palace, a 1,000 square meter ice labyrinth.

Winter sports enthusiasts can shorten the wait for the next season in the ski and snowboard park. On the Glacier Trek you undertake glacier hikes or you take part in one of the offered guided glacier tours or high mountain ski tours.

Kleine Scheidegg is located at 2070 m above sea level and is easily reached from Wengen by the Wengernalpbahn. From here there are beautiful hiking trails to the Jungfraujoch. In summer, the pass is a paradise with many hiking trails. In winter, the ski lifts take winter sports enthusiasts to the slopes. In addition to the Wengernalpbahn, the Jungfraubahn also stops here. In September, Kleine Scheidegg is the destination for the Jungfrau Marathon.

  • Lauterbrunnen Valley

A worthwhile excursion is the Lauterbrunnen Valley, which will thrill you with 72 waterfalls. Among them are the Trümmelbach Falls, 10 glacial waterfalls inside a mountain. Access is via a tunnel lift. The waterfalls are illuminated. The fact that they are accessible despite their location inside a mountain is unique in Europe.

  • Swiss Activities Tips Wengen

We have found some tips for you in Wengen that we would like to share with you.

children prices

Children up to the age of eleven are allowed to stay for free in their parents' room at the Hotel Silberhorn in Wengen.

Distance Lauberhorn Race

Friends of the Lauberhorn race have the opportunity to run exactly this route in the opposite direction to the top, although the type of equipment is not prescribed. Spikes, running shoes, skis, everything is allowed. Whoever takes less than 3 hours becomes a star.

The Eiger Run toboggan run is a special experience. The Eiger north face is also very impressive when seen from below. You can shorten the 13 km route as you wish and return at any time with the Wengernalpbahn.

Activities in and around Wengen

The vacation village above the Lauterbrunnen valley is an ideal destination for the whole family all year round. In winter it invites not only skiers but also winter hikers. In summer, 500 kilometers of hiking trails and 15 mountain railroads are waiting for you to discover the mountain world.

Already the arrival is an experience. From Lauterbrunnen the Wengernalpbahn goes up to Wengen. The rack railroad was opened in 1893 and continues over Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald.

The family-friendly vacation village has a good 1400 inhabitants. There are 4700 beds in 22 hotels. In addition, there are 500 vacation apartments. The terraces of the gastronomic establishments invite you to sunbathe. The high plateau at the foot of the Jungfrau is one of the sunniest places in Switzerland, especially in winter.

Summer activities:

  • Bike and Gemel riding
  • paragliding

Winter activities:

  • Ski and snowboard, ski touring
  • tobogganing
  • cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter hiking

Small Scheidegg

  • Hiking from Wengen and Männlichen

In summer, the friendly vacation village of Wengen is ideal for hiking tours . On Männlichen, fast-paced rides on the Summer Gemel or the educational Royal Walk await. The Wengen Männlichen cable car takes you comfortably up the mountain, from where you have a fantastic view of the four-thousand-meter peaks.

Panorama Trail

The Panorama Trail leads to the Kleine Scheidegg. Especially hikers who like the scenery of impressive peaks will love this trail. It leads past steeply rising rocks, along the Tschuggen to the Honegg and to the Rotstöcki. The route slopes gently and is thus well suited for pleasure hikers. For the 4.5 km you need about 1.5 hours. From Kleine Scheidegg, the rack railroad takes you back to Wengen.

Romantic Path

The Romantic Path goes over 7.2 km to Alpiglen. You hike through the almost untouched alpine landscape. Alpine flowers like anemones, gentian or alpine roses grow on the meadows and pastures. The path leads you through the Devil's Gorge past the Swiss stone pine garden to Alpiglen. And if the way down is too easy for you, you simply walk it the other way around and have to overcome 600 meters in altitude.

Chamois trail Männlichen - Wengen

You don't always have to take the cable car. A beautiful hiking trail leads down from Männlichen to the village that hosts the Lauberhorn race in January. The five kilometers are especially challenging when you run up the trail. You'll cover almost 950 meters in altitude. But the Gemsenweg is also worthwhile downhill.

The path does not have its name for nothing: on the slope there are chamois in packs, which you can observe with a bit of luck with binoculars. From the Männlichen mountain restaurant, the trail first leads to Parwengi.

If you prefer a more leisurely pace, take the gentler route from here via Steinenwald and Chilchenstein. The route is a bit rougher via Äusseren Allmend to Wengen on the sunny high plateau above the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Eiger Trail

If you want to push your limits, the Eiger Trail, a moderately difficult mountain hiking trail, might be the right challenge. You won't need crampons and rope or carabiners for this one. The trail starts at the Eigergletscher station. On the mountain trail you can see directly the Lauberhorn, the Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald.

The impressive and almost mystical Eiger north face you experience directly at the foot. You should take a pair of binoculars with you so that you can perhaps spot a rope team high up. You pass thundering torrents and waterfalls and walk over steep alpine pastures. The trail leads to the Alpiglen train station.

  • Bike or Gemel ride from Wengen

Cyclists will find a fantastic backdrop in addition to the sporting challenges. The Wengernalpbahn also takes the bike. A particularly beautiful bike tour runs through the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

The tour starts in Lauterbrunnen and goes to Stechelberg along the waterfalls. As soon as you are on the forest road, the gradient increases slightly. You ride along the Weisse Lütschine to Trachsellauenen. The path goes back the same way.

  • 430 meters of altitude

Summer Gemel at Männlichen

With a Summer Gemel (also known as Mountaincart) you can drive down the slope between the top station Männlichen and the middle station Holenstein in summer. The route for the Summer Gemel starts at an altitude of 2,225 meters and leads down about 600 meters over a length of 6 kilometers.

Tickets are available at the mountain railroad stores in Wengen, Grindelwald or directly at the Männlichen mountain station. The Gemel sled is issued in the Pit Shop at the top station and must be returned in person at the Holenstein middle station

  • Paragliding in Wengen

A paragliding flight over the high plateau and the Lauterbrunnen Valley is a special experience. Tandem flights are offered by experienced pilots

They include these trails, for example:

  • 60 Männlichen summit
  • 61 Easy Männlichen Holenstein

A popular trail is the 13 km long route between the Eiger glacier and Grindelwald Grund. It runs along the line of the Eiger Express and Wengernalpbahn mountain railroads. You get to the start with the Eiger Express. This also takes sleds as soon as the Eiger Run route is open for sledding. But you can also start at any of the following stations. The Wengernalpbahn also transports sledges and toboggans.

Sledging section Eiger Run

As a special event, night sledding also takes place at the Eiger Run on Thursdays to Saturdays.

The Fox Run runs right next to the Lauberhorn downhill run. It is 4.5 km of challenging sledding run that is carefully groomed

  • Snowshoeing and winter hiking

One of the oldest ways of getting around is snowshoeing. You can also enjoy this special experience on a guided hike Winter hikers will find a network of trails that is about 50 kilometers long.

Hotels in Wengen

Wengen is a small mountain village with 1300 inhabitants without connection to the road network. Nevertheless, about 5000 people stay here in summer and about 10000 in winter.

Therefore there are quite a few hotels in the village. There are at least 21 hotels, three mountain hotels and three vacation apartment organizations in the village.

  • Hotel Alpenruhe Wengen

The Hotel Alpenruhe Wengen is a three-star hotel. 24 rooms accommodate 45 guests and all have balconies. The hotel is only an eight-minute walk from Wengen train station.

  • Hotel Silberhorn

The four-star Hotel Silberhorn is located in the middle of the village of Wengen. Single, double, triple and quadruple rooms are offered here, as well as a family apartment. The nightlife in Wengen is colorful and varied. In the middle of the village you will find the Rocks Bar, a pub with lots of live music and good Guinness. A few steps away, in the Hasenstall, party friends celebrate to great music exuberantly until the next morning. Bar girls, cool drinks and lots of flirty people make the Hasenstall Wengen's most popular music club.

There are three mountain railroads in Wengen, all of which operate in both summer and winter:

Arrival to Wengen

Wengen is easily reached from all major cities in Switzerland. By car you drive via Bern or Luzern to Interlaken . From the south you can reach Interlaken via the Grimsel Pass (only in summer) or the Simplon Pass and the Lötschberg car transport. From there you take the route Gsteigstrasse, Obereigasse, Grenchenstrasse and Schmiedmatte to Lauterbrunnen. The route is well signposted. As Wengen is car-free, the car must be left in Lauterbrunnen. The parking spaces near the station are well suited for this.

  • Public transport

You can also get to Interlaken Ost by train via Bern or Lucerne. There you change to the Bernese Oberland Railway and travel to Lauterbrunnen. The Bernese Oberland Railway trains from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen run every half hour during the day.

Should You Visit Wengen: Best Reasons & 10 Things To Do

When it comes to planning a trip to Switzerland, it’s always a dilemma deciding which place to visit, especially if you plan to stay only for a few days. It seems almost all of its villages, towns, and attractions, particularly those near Interlaken in the Jungfrau Region , are hard to miss. If you’re a laid-back traveler, a 4-day trip to the Jungfrau Region might seem short.

Among the beautiful destinations in the Jungfrau region, Wengen stands out . This village is one of the most convenient places to go to behold an overlooking view of the Lauterbrunnen valley, which is commonly nicknamed ‘the heaven on earth.’ If you’re coming from the city (e.g., Bern ), Wengen is just roughly a 2-hour train and funicular journey away (with a transfer in Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen village).

You might also want to visit Wengen because it can be a good home base for exploring the Jungfrau Region . There’s more to know about Wengen , So, let me give you more ideas about why you’d like to visit Wengen and how it compares to other places that can also be a good home base. And if you decide to make Wengen your destination, I’ll give you ideas of what you can do while you’re there.

There are two ways to get to Wengen if you are already in the Jungfrau Region.

  • From Lauterbrunnen: Funicular.
  • From Grindelwald: Cable car passing Mannlichen.

If you are from other regions or you’re flying into Switzerland, you can start in Bern, Basel, or Zurich to reach Wengen. From these cities, you can find direct train rides to Interlaken, where most trips to Jungfrau Region begin. Once you reach Interlaken, you must get another train to Lauterbrunnen and finally transfer to a funicular heading to Wengen. The journey from Interlaken to Wengen usually takes 40 minutes to 1 hour.

Is Wengen Worth Visiting?

Three aspects where Wengen stands out are its breathtaking location , idyllic scenery , and belle-époque-period-inspired quaint alpine architecture . It is an unforgettable moment for someone like me to wander in Wengen, seeing all the flower-becked chalets, gorgeous hotels, and the stunning trough-shaped valley below . Everyone can simply agree that Wengen is a village worth visiting for the best overlooking view of the Lauterbrunnen valley . Make sure to check out Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Wengen to experience the awe-inspiring view for yourself!

Yes — as someone who grew up in a completely different environment, I find Wengen unreal ! It satisfies my craving to see beauty.

You will love taking a stroll in Wengen because it is a car-free village. Take a stroll around St. Bernard’s Anglican Church and experience the heavenly views of the Swiss countryside . Witness the cows grazing in the meadows and bask in the serenity of the fields.

However, aside from sightseeing, there’s not much unique to do within the village of Wengen. You have to leave the village to make the most of your visit. Mostly it’s outdoor activities nearby like hiking during summer and skiing during winter. There are also thrilling cable car rides and scenic trains to some of the top attractions in the Jungfrau Region.

The good thing is that these attractions are very accessible from Wengen and they make Wengen a fantastic home base for travelers. Let’s not forget that Wengen also has more shops and restaurants compared to other villages within the Lauterbrunnen commune.

Wengen as a Home Base in Exploring Jungfrau Region

When it comes to how accessible Wengen is and how quickly one can reach other attractions in the Jungfrau from Wengen, it’s easy to see why Wengen is a good home base for exploring the Jungfrau Region . Lauterbrunnen? It’s only one train ride away. Grindelwald? Just hop on a cable car. Mannlichen? It’s only a 5-minute fancy cable car ride to the top. Jungfraujoch? Only two scenic train rides away. And there are more examples!

Scenic hiking trails also start in Wengen, like the Wengen-Lauterbrunnen, Wengen-Leiterhorn, and the Panorama trail, among others. And if you’re visiting during winter, Wengen is the closest village to the World Cup piste on the Lauberhorn . The hiking trails around Wengen become a skiing winter wonderland that you can quickly access.

Before you visit and find a place to stay in Wengen, make sure to check out some other awesome villages too . Similar to Wengen, Interlaken, Grindelwald, Mürren, and Lauterbrunnen are all great options as a home base in the Jungfrau region based on the selection of accommodation, location, and access to facilities.

The map below should give you a clear perspective of the strategic location of Wengen and the different destinations in the Jungfrau Region. ( I linked the brochure and maps of Wengen and the Jungfrau region to the resources section of this post for further information. )

Interlaken , the gateway to the Jungfrau Region, is situated right at the doorstep of this spectacular destination. It’s an awesome alternative to Wengen as a home base for a Jungfrau Region trip if you’re looking for a more diverse experience . That includes castles, lakeside villages, and more mountain-top destinations.

Did you know? Interlaken is sandwiched between two lakes — Lake Brienz and Lake Thun — two of the most stunning lakes in Switzerland.

It’s on the shores of Lake Brienz where you can find the picture-perfect village of Iseltwald . On the other hand, it’s on the shores of Lake Thun where you can find the beautiful town of Thun and Oberhofen Castle . From Interlaken, you can take a boat to Thun, explore its fairytale old town , visit the medieval Thun Castle , and behold the Thun Panorama — the oldest of its kind. Harderkulm , one of the best view points of the Jungfrau Region, is located above Interlaken.

Another advantage of Interlaken as a home base? Suppose you plan to join guided tours in the Jungfrau Region (Schilthorn and Jungfraujoch). In that case, Interlaken is preferable over Wengen because Interlaken is the common meet-up place for these tours. Sometimes, excursion trips to the Jungfrau Region from other cities in Switzerland also have a pick-up point in Interlaken.

Here is the list of the different guided tours to Bernese Oberland (Jungfrau Region included).

Grindelwald is another alternative to Wengen as a home base for a Jungfrau Region trip. This beautiful village has become one of the top destinations in Switzerland since the Golden Age of Alpinism in the 19th century. Located on the eastern side of the Jungfrau Region, it is here in Grindelwald that you can get the best view of the notorious North Face of Eiger .

You can check my budget one-day Grindelwald itinerary to learn more about this village.

As a home base, Grindelwald is the superior choice for your Jungfrau Region trip if you want an action-packed adventure . From Grindelwald, you can experience the Glacier Canyon Grindelwald Swing, First Flyer, Cliff Walk, Mountain Cart, Trotti Bike, and Schynige Platte Hike – all of which are sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

However, if you have Jungfraujoch on your travel bucket list, it doesn’t matter if you’re coming from Wengen or Grindelwald . You can reach Kleine Scheidegg, the first station of the Jungfrau Railway, in an hour – 40 minutes from Wengen and 25 minutes from Grindelwald.

Murren is the highest village in Lauterbrunnen, situated above the middle part of the valley. It’s an excellent choice for a home base in exploring Jungfrau Region if you want to explore the less touristy yet still conveniently accessible west side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

A few of the must-see destinations that are easily accessible from Mürren include Schilthorn’s rotating restaurant , Birg’s Thrill Walk , the quaint village of Gimmelwald , and Tanzbödeli . Trummelbach waterfall, Europe’s largest underground waterfall, is located between Wengen and Mürren.

The view isn’t something to be taken lightly when it comes to choosing a home base. If waking up in a hotel with an impressive view is a priority for you, then you need to know that Mürren and Wengen offer two very different sceneries. Although Mürren and Wengen are in Lauterbrunnen, they’re situated at opposite ends of the valley. Consequently, the mountain views you’ll get from each are totally distinct.

Unlike Wengen in the northeast of Lauterbrunnen, you won’t get the same breathtaking view of the Lauterbrunnen valley from Mürren. Instead, you’ll be treated to the awe-inspiring, craggy rock face of Schwarzmönch Mountain — an impressive sight, too.

If you don’t mind a limited range of restaurants, hotels, and amenities, Lauterbrunnen village is a great alternative to Wengen. Most importantly, if you want your mornings and nights in the Jungfrau Region to end with the awe-inspiring view of towering granite cliff walls, graced by the plummeting silk-like Staubbach Waterfall, then Lauterbrunnen is the place to be. Like, you can check out these beautiful views of Lauterbrunnen !

Another advantage of Lauterbrunnen village over Wengen is its more central location in the Lauterbrunnen valley. Getting to each place of interest within and around the valley is a breeze – none is too far or too close. Therefore, I believe Lauterbrunnen is a better home base for travelers wanting to spend more time and see more tourist attractions in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Nevertheless, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen are just one train ride apart. When it comes to this small difference in location, it should depend on your personal preferences.

Regardless of your choice, you can find the best hotel deals in the Jungfrau Region and Bernese Oberland here. The link contains a hotel browser with a map feature, which is an absolutely helpful tool in looking for a hotel that’s most convenient for you.

Best Things To Do In And From Wengen

Wengen is one of those places where I could spend all day just wandering, relaxing, and taking in the views of the quaint and rustic surroundings. If only I were a Swiss local! Oh, how I wish. As a traveler, it goes without saying (like what I’ve mentioned a while ago) that we need to venture beyond the village to make the most of our time for a more memorable journey. If you decide to visit or stay in Wengen, here are some attractions and experiences you can enjoy once you’re done exploring the village .

1. Explore Wengen and Wengwald

Wengen is an unmissable place, especially since it offers the best view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley .

Aside from the Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Wengen, which provides the most accessible viewpoint of the Lauterbrunnen valley, and St Bernard’s Anglican Church, where pleasing countryside views abound, there is one more place I recommend. It’s called Wengwald . The view from here is better than what awaits you from Evangelisch Reformierte Kirche Wengen.

Only in Wengwald and Tanzbodeli can you find a view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley that is perfectly aligned with the valley’s length . Both the steep precipices on both sides of the valley and the flat valley floor are visible from Wengwald. The scenery is incredible, especially during sunrise. The view is simply marvelous, and it’s going to make you marvel at how creative Mother Nature really is!

Tanzbodeli is the mountain at the far southern end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. From there, you can also find a panorama that includes all the villages in Lauterbrunnen in the picture. It can be hiked from Murren or Gimmelwald to Stechelberg (or vice versa). You can learn more about Tanzbodeli from walkinghiking.com, linked in the resources section of this post.

2. See The Breathtaking Mannlichen

To me, the place to see best views of the Jungfrau Region , not just Lauterbrunnen, is just above Wengen. It is called Mannlichen , and it is just one cable car ride away from the village. This mountain, standing tall at 2,343 meters, is also home to the region’s nicest hikes and ski pistes.

From the summit of Mannlichen, which is a 10-minute hike from the cable car station, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Jungfrau Region . This includes Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau, the Lauterbrunnen Valley and its villages, and Grindelwald. Even Lake Thun is vividly visible if the skies are clear!

You can also hike from Wengen to Mannlichen; however, I would not recommend it . The views along the Wengen-Mannlichen hiking trail are rewarding, but the path can be quite exhausting for some. Instead of hiking, consider using the cable car and upgrade your ride to the “Royal Experience.” With this, you can stand on top of the gondola as you ascend from Wengen to Mannlichen! It might be a little scary at first, but it’s definitely an awesomely memorable experience.

Mannlichen can also be a great destination for families traveling with kids. There’s a playground with a huge cow slide, and kids can have fun chiming a few cowbells. You can read my other article to help you make the most of your trip to Mannlichen .

3. Visit The Ultimate Destination, Jungfraujoch

As much as everyone wants to save money during their Jungfrau Region trips, I believe you just can’t miss the pricey yet once-in-a-lifetime Jungfraujoch visit . Jungfraujoch is the saddle between Monch (4,110 meters) and Jungfrau (4,158 meters), two of the highest mountains in the Bernese Oberland. This destination offers awe-inspiring scenery and awesome experiences , which justify its expensive tickets.

  • First, the Jungfrau Railway is one of the most scenic in Switzerland, and its stop station is the highest in Europe. Marvel at the scenery as you experience the commendable ingenuity of the Swiss engineers who built the railway.
  • Second, Jungfraujoch is also home to the Sphinx Observatory, an astronomical observatory perched on a 3,571-meter summit called Sphinx (hence its name). Although you cannot enter the observatory, you are allowed to visit its viewing platform and be amazed by the otherworldly ice views!
  • Third, the highest tip of the longest and largest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier, can also be spotted in Jungfraujoch. If you haven’t seen a glacier before, visiting Jungfraujoch is your chance to make your first glacier sighting special.
  • Fourth, when visiting Jungfraujoch, you will not only see glaciers but also be able to enter one! The walking-inside-a-grotto-of-a-glacier moment takes place in the Ice Palace, and it’s a surreal experience. You will also find ice sculptures, which are so cool. Lastly, have fun finding Scrat (a fictional character in the movie Ice Age); he’s frozen at the wall of the glacier tunnel!
  • Another reason to visit Jungfraujoch is the Lindt Chocolate Museum. It’s a twist in your mountaintop journey—making it memorable and sweet! There’s so much to do in Jungfraujoch that it can already serve as a day trip from any village in the Jungfrau Region. In fact, some travel companies offer a whole-day excursion to Jungfraujoch straight from Switzerland’s major cities like Bern, Lucerne, and Zurich.

There are two ways you can get to Jungfraujoch: (1) a train ride and (2) a cable car. But, if your home base is in Wengen, it’s preferable to go up and down from Jungfraujoch using the trains . The cable car valley station is in Grindelwald. The quickest way to get to Jungfraujoch from Wengen is to get to Kleine Scheidegg by train first. In Kleine Scheidegg, you must transfer to the Jungfrau Railway, which will directly bring you to Jungfraujoch in approximately 45 minutes.

Interested in Jungfraujoch? Here’s where you can check the price of the tours and tickets to Jungfraujoch .

4. Adventure In Grindelwald

Whenever I see mountains, two things always come to my mind. First, it’s peace of mind; the other is adventure. In the Jungfrau Region, you can expect to have a lot of both. The adventure starts in Interlaken, but for me, the best adventurous activities happen in Grindelwald.

Suppose you are based in Wengen or currently in Wengen. In that case, the adventure village of Grindelwald isn’t hard to reach. Grindelwald is only a 30-minute cable car ride from Wengen , passing Mannlichen. The adventures in Grindelwald are exceptional. The exhilarating outdoor activities are matched with breathtaking views. No wonder it has been a top destination in Switzerland for more than a century now!

A wide range of outdoor fun awaits you in Grindelwald, regardless of the season. But it’s during the summer that these activities are most enjoyable. Your choices start from just a relaxing hike to extreme activities to help you overcome your fears. Here’s what I can recommend:

  • Relax with a thrill and view 😄 — Feel like flying over Grindelwald with a cable car, then walk on a steel pathway, and hike to Bachalpsee, which is one of the most picturesque small alpine lakes in the Jungfrau Region. Discover: Grindelwald Gondola Ride to Mount First
  • Slight adventure 😛 — Explore a canyon, see impressive rock galleries, and walk on the “spider web” hanging above the river. Check it out here: Glacier Canyon Entrance Ticket .
  • Adrenaline-pumping 🤪 — Jump in the middle of the canyon and safely experience free fall from a 90-meter-high platform! Learn more: Grindelwald Canyon Swing .

If you have plenty of time, you can try the different activities in Grindelwald-First, like First Flyer, Mountain Cart, First Glider, and Scooter Bike. You can learn more about it from my post on my other blog (engineering travels): 10 Best Things To Do In Grindelwald .

5. Go To Lauterbrunnen’s Viewpoints

Only 15 minutes away from Wengen by train, wandering in Lauterbrunnen must also be on your plans should you decide to stay in Wengen. No explanation is needed: you can simply look at the “Heaven on Earth” views on the photo above. I bet, you’ll take more than a dozen of photos visiting Lauterbrunnen photo spots .

6. Wander In Gimmelwald

For pure-blooded wanderers and travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path destination in the Jungfrau Region , Gimmelwald is the place to be. Gimmelwald is only a small village with only a few, but it has meaningful, activities to enjoy . Despite its size — Gimmelwald is the smallest village in Lauterbrunnen Valley — it’s where you can find some of the most authentic Swiss alpine cultures in the Jungfrau Region.

Gimmelwald is also the southernmost village above the Lauterbrunnen Valley , but it can still be easily reached from Wengen. To get to Gimmelwald from Wengen, you must first take the train to Lauterbrunnen. Once in Lauterbrunnen, board bus #141 to Stechelberg, where the cable car station to Schilthorn is located. Hop on the cable car and alight at the first station, Gimmelwald. The travel time between Wengen and Gimmelwald should not exceed an hour.

7. Marvel At The Jungfrau Massif From Murren

If you’ve made it to Gimmelwald (as discussed previously), Murren is just a stone’s throw away. Murren is the second station on the cable car route to Schilthorn from Stechelberg. This village, the most elevated in the canton of Bern , is also one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. The quaintness of the buildings and the breathtaking views in Murren clearly explain why. Come here to wander and surround yourself with alpine charm!

Aside from exploring its charming village and taking hundreds of photos of stunning alpine vistas, you can visit the hill above the village called Allmendhubel .

Allmendhubel is a relaxed place with an unobstructed view of the Jungfrau region’s three superstar peaks . It also has a large playground and a restaurant, making it a nice destination for families traveling. The journey up to Allmendhubel from the village is as quick as 5 minutes . You just have to ride the funicular that links the two places. If you wish, you can take the flower trail back to Murren for a varied experience.

If you haven’t checked out my article about Mürren, here is the link .

8. Feel The Thrill In Birg

The western side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley, where Murren and Gimmelwald are located, is best visited on a day trip if you’re using Wengen as your home base . If that’s what you prefer, you can also add Birg to your itinerary for a more fulfilling trip. Birg is the middle station between Murren and Schilthorn and is worth visiting for the free mini-adventures it offers.

Birg is situated approximately 1000 meters above Murren, and you can expect even more breathtaking views of the Jungfrau Region from a different perspective. The mini-adventure is called the Birg Thrill Walk, which is very similar to the Grindelwald First Cliff Walk . In this attraction, you’ll be walking on a metal pathway attached to the cliff wall surrounding the station.

However, there’s a twist! The Birg Thrill Walk features an open-air tunnel made of meshed metal . You can crawl on it to see hundreds of meters of emptiness below you. Thrilling, isn’t it? The Birg Thrill Walk also features a tightrope where you can walk, balancing over the exhilarating height between you and the ground. Is it dangerous? No, it’s absolutely safe! There is a metal mesh safety net to catch you if you lose your balance.

9. Dine With A View In Piz Gloria Schilthorn

Suppose you are traveling with your romantic partner. In that case, you must really consider going to the western side of Lauterbrunnen valley, even if it takes more effort to reach from Wengen. Why? Simply, it’s because of Piz Gloria . Piz Gloria is a revolving restaurant perched on top of Schilthorn . And here, you and your partner can have lunch beside a window with changing stunning views of the Alps every minute.

Sometimes, a sea of clouds appear, turning the mountain peaks into islands of the heavenly ocean. Can you imagine how magical and lovely it is? Mouth and eyes are satisfied! Of course, the view isn’t always perfect, and it will all depend on the weather, but still!  Piz Gloria and Schilthorn is a popular tourist spot in the Jungfrau Region, made famous by the James Bond Movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service . This is why you will also find Spy World, an interactive exhibit about James Bond, in Schilthorn.

If you want to go to Schilthorn, Birg, Murren, and Gimmelwald, here’s where you can check the price of the skip-the-line round-trip Stechelberg-Schilthorn cable car tickets . To learn more about Schilthorn and Birg, you may visit their official website, linked at the end of this post.

10. Spend a rainy day in Trümmelbach Waterfalls

I can assure you that Wengen and the rest of the Jungfrau Region are truly awe-inspiring outdoor destinations, especially when the sky is clear and it is sunny. However, bad weather may happen, and you should have a plan B to still enjoy it, even if it’s cloudy and gray. So, what’s the plan? Trummelbach Waterfalls . It is Europe’s largest underground waterfall which you can also quickly visit from Wengen. After a train ride to Lauterbrunnen, take bus #141 heading to Stechelberg and alight at Trummelbach Waterfalls bus station.

The travel time should not be more than 10 minutes from Lauterbrunnen. Here, you can experience the power of nature, manifested by the 20,000 liters of meltwater cascading down to the valley from Jungfrau. The thundering sound of the waterfalls and the large rock formations will feed your senses with wonder.

There are 10 different platforms in the Trummelbach Waterfalls; some have a beautiful view of the valley. And believe it or not, there is also a funicular inside Trummelbach Waterfalls connecting a few of these viewing platforms! They’re another proof of the ingenuity of the Swiss engineers you’ll find in the Jungfrau Region. The visitor’s information, facts, and FAQs about Trummelbach Waterfalls are linked in the resources section of this post.

Resources: Visiting Wengen

So, that’s it! Those are my reasons why you should stay in Wengen and the list of things to do in Wengen. Updated: 23 September 2023

In my humble opinion, Switzerland is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. It’s nearly impossible not to fall in love with Switzerland as you explore the country’s mountains and lush green valleys and pristine lakes. It’s difficult to describe the Swiss countryside in words, and photos, while lovely to look at, don’t do justice.

Furthermore, taking an epic train ride through those snow-capped mountains has been a dream of mine for years. Literally years.

Let’s also ignore how expensive it is to visit, shall we? Switzerland isn’t a cheap date, although there are some ways to lower the cost, even in a popular destination such as Wengen.

Ultimately, if money isn’t an issue, Switzerland is a wonderful place to spend an extended period of time (think a week or more), especially if you’re able to afford it.

feeling happy at schilthorn solo travel in switzerland

Furthermore, I also think solo travel in Switzerland is one of the easiest and safest trips that you can take in Europe. I never once felt uneasy in any of Switzerland’s cities. Not once.

Now I’m not saying that the rest of Europe is unsafe (far from it, Europe has lots of wonderful and safe cities for solo travel ), but at the same time, I didn’t feel the need to keep a close eye on my belongings in Lucerne or Zurich, unlike some other destinations on the continent.

you will see great views with one day in lucerne

However, Switzerland’s true gems are the little villages tucked into the mountainous landscapes. I want to visit literally all of them even though it’s probably impossible.

One of my favorite quintessential Swiss villages is Wengen , located in the heart of the country’s Bernese Oberland. You don’t want to skip the Bernese Oberland, particularly if you have an extended period of time, such as 8 days in Switzerland , because this region is home to some of the most stunning natural beauty that I’ve ever seen in my life.

And Wengen is the picture perfect base!

Travel Tips for Wengen Switzerland

Before discussing all the great things to do in Wengen, I wanted to share some travel tips for this lovely Swiss village to jumpstart the planning process.

Fortunately, Wengen is an “easy” destination, so you don’t need to know toooo much, but better safe than sorry!

wengen is easy to reach by public transit

How to Get to Wengen

No car in Switzerland? No problem! An intricate train system connects Switzerland’s cities and towns. Trains are clean and efficient, and honestly, I think a scenic train ride is one of the best things you can do on your vacation to Switzerland.

Actually, I personally don’t recommend driving a car in Switzerland. But even if you had a car, four wheels wouldn’t help you much in this lovely small town. Wengen is 100% car-free.

To get to Wengen, you need to take the train to Lauterbrunnen, a charming if not touristy village, on the valley floor and catch the train to Wengen. It’s a gorgeous train ride with sweeping views of Staubbach Falls.

To save money, invest in the Swiss Pass. This pass covers all public transportation and gives you a discount on the mountain adventures in the Bernese Oberland.

Packing Tips for Wengen

Switzerland is expensive, and as a result, you want to plan properly to get the most value. Having a good guidebook, such as Lonely Planet’s Switzerland guide , is a great place to begin.

Additionally, in Wengen, you want to wear outdoors clothing suitable for mountainous conditions. A lot of the best things to do in Wengen Switzerland involve getting outside and admiring the snow-covered peaks of the Bernese Oberland.

Even in summer, you’ll have to wear layers in the mountains, particularly if you decide to do the ride to Jungfraujoch, which is over 11,000 feet above sea level.

Excellent hiking boots are also important for walks on the trails. You don’t want to twist or sprain your ankle.

In the summer, don’t forget to bring sunblock to protect your skin, because you’ll spend a ton of time outdoors.

Last but not least, while not an item you can physically pack, you’ll want to purchase a good quality travel insurance plan. I like World Nomads travel insurance since they have adventure travel options, which is perfect for adrenaline pumping sports in the mountains.

Where to Stay in Wengen

Wengen is a very small village, but since it’s a tourist town, you’ll find plenty of wonderful hotel options. Are these hotels expensive? Like everything else is Switzerland, accommodation is on the pricier end of things.

Still, I personally think it’s worth the money to stay higher up in the mountains than on the valley floor.

Wengen Hotel Recommendations

  • Beausite Park Hotel:   A gorgeous family-run hotel with spectacular mountain views. You’re only a five minute walk from the Wengen Wengiboden gondola. See prices on Expedia.com and Booking.com .
  • Hotel Schönegg:   Another excellent hotel option with epic views. This building is so quaint, having been built in 1903. See prices on Expedia.com and Booking.com .
  • The Edelweiss Hotel:   An unassuming hotel near the train station, which makes connections super easy. See prices on Expedia.com and Booking.com .

Lovely Things to Do in Wengen Switzerland

Believe it or not, Wengen has plenty of wonderful things to do for such a small village. Of course, since it is perfectly located in the Bernese Oberland, Wengen is a great base for sightseeing. However, while I do mention that Wengen is an “ideal home base,” you’ll still find quite a few great things to do in walking distance of the village.

hiking is one of the cool things to do in wengen

Plan Your Own Hike

Wengen’s hikes are spectacular.  As always, know your limits ahead of time, and train in the safety of your home and gym if you plan on embarking on longer hikes.

Hikes also vary in difficulty and length. For instance, Wengen to Männlichen takes approximately three hours, and you gain quite a bit of elevation on your journey, while a hike down to the valley floor (near Lauterbrunnen) isn’t nearly as challenging.

Hikers ought to drink plenty of water, especially in the warmer summer months, and wear sturdy and comfortable hiking boots.

Furthermore, always leave an itinerary with your hotel or hostel if you’re planning a solo hike. Switzerland’s trails are very well-marked, but you’re still exploring nature, and need to take precautions in case an accident happens or you suddenly encounter poor weather conditions.

delicious meal in wengen switzerland

Dine in a Chalet-Style Hotel

You might not immediately think Switzerland and food go together, but I had some great meals in Wengen.  Trust me, you’ll need a hearty meal to give your body some energy after hiking all day. Wengen’s hotels have delightful dining options, particularly on summer evenings when you can sit outside.

Don’t miss out on fondue in the winter months! Swiss cheese is to  die  for.

the james bond movie was filmed here in switzerland

Explore the Bernese Oberland Region

Wengen is an excellent base for the Bernese Oberland region. The small town feels far less touristy than Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, but at the same time, is very centrally located to all the attractions. You can reach anywhere that you please simply by taking the trains and cable cars.

I personally loved going to Schilthorn for sweeping views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. Plus the James Bond movie, Her Majesty’s Secret Service , was filmed there.

Another favorite spot of mine is remote Gimmelwald. I love this tiny, car free village, which is even smaller than Wengen. You truly feel connected with nature.

cable car ride in switzerland

Luftseilbahn Wengen-Männlichen

Don’t want to take a train to another town to board a cable car? Don’t worry! Wengen has its own!

This sleek and modern cable car shuttles 75 passengers (max) between Wengen and Mannlichen. This ride is brief, taking up to Mannlichen in only five minutes, and you’ll fall in love with the snow-capped mountain views surrounding you.

Not to mention, this cableway offers a unique open-air balcony that makes the ride to the summit even more majestic. This cable ride is one of the best things to do in Wengen, no doubt.

Last but not least, stop at the Mannlichen Mountain Guesthouse if you want a bite to eat!

hanging out in wengen switzerland

Play Some Mini-Golf

Wengen is home to a mini-golf course! Lauberhorn Crazygolf Minigolfpark is perfect for families and friends looking for a fun and relaxed activity in Wengen.

Keep in mind that this mini-golf course has 18 holes and isn’t always easy. So you need to have a good sense of humor about it! Haha, I know some people who are way too competitive about mini-golf, and just felt like I need to say that.

I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a better place to play mini-golf than high in the Swiss mountains. What could be better?

Relax with a Mountain View

Okay, so I suppose this thing to do in Wengen is cheating, but honestly, if I had more time in this region, I would’ve relaxed in a meadow near Wengen all day with a book and bottle of water.

Don’t forget to take a break from all of your sightseeing hustle and bustle, and simply take in the spectacular nature that surrounds you.

If your finances can swing it, opt for a room with a balcony, so you can fall in love with the mountains from the comfort of your own accommodation.

wengen has tons of mountains surround it on all sides

Shop for Fabulous Outdoor Gear

Lastly, shopping in Wengen is a very enjoyable experience.  You’ll find all of your outdoor gear needs here, too. For example, Central Sport is a wonderful option for purchasing outdoor clothing and boots, but you can also rent e-bikes and other gear for exploring the mountains and valley.

Plenty of other locally owned sporting good shops can be found around the village. You can even rent skis for the winter months!

I don’t see any issues with spending a bit more money to buy some Swiss souvenirs. I never said I was a financial advisor, after all.

The Top 14+ Things To Do in Wengen, Switzerland (Hikes, Views, & More!)

If you are heading to the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland, then the car free village of Wengen better be on the list!

Located directly above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and along the mountainside, Wengen offers so much variety for visitors. Whether that is hikes, views, attractions, or day trips, Wengen offers it all and more.

Read on to learn more about the best things to do in Wengen, in addition to many other helpful tips for your time there.

1) How to Get to Wengen

First things first, you will need to make your way to Wengen. There is one “main” way to go about it, in addition to a couple secondary routes that will take you there.

Via Lauterbrunnen

For the most part though, whether you are staying overnight or just stopping by for the day, you first will need to make your way to the valley town of Lauterbrunnen.

Lauterbrunnen is home to a train and bus station that connects with other nearby main hubs such as Interlaken and Grindelwald.

Once you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, it is just a short 12 minute train ride that curves its way up the mountainside to Wengen.

Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card ? Learn which one is right for you in this comprehensive comparison guide of the Swiss train ticket options .

While going to Wengen via Lauterbrunnen is the main option to consider, there are some other viable options as well. I see these more so as options for those that may be taking a day trip around the region, while visiting multiple places along the way.

Via Mannlichen

Right in the town center of Wengen, there is a cable car that heads up to Mannlichen (more on that soon!). Mannlichen is also connected by cable car to Grindelwald (in addition to a hiking trail from Kleine Scheidegg).

So, if you happen to be visiting Mannlichen during your day from another nearby place in the region, it is possible to head right down to Wengen from there at some point.

Via Grindelwald/Kleine Scheidegg

In addition, there is also a train route that connects Grindelwald directly with Wengen. It is a mountain railway that passes by other stops such as Alpiglen, Kleine Scheidegg, Wengernlap, and a few others.

Depending on your itinerary for the day, it is possible to hop on that train route, and connect directly into the Wengen train station.

How to Get to Wengen

2) Wengen Hotels

For those that are staying overnight in Wengen, you may be asking yourself what are the best hotels to choose from.

Don’t worry there! I put together a complete breakdown of the best hotels in Wengen . While the list has 15 different options, see below for a couple top recommendations:

Wengen Cablecar

Hotel Edelweiss

Looking for the best value hotel in Wengen? Hotel Edelweiss continuously is ranked as one of the top hotels in town and is the perfect choice for a stay.

3) Things To Do in Wengen

Now that you have a better idea of how to get there and where to stay, let’s dive into the best things to do in Wengen during a visit.

Just note that while there are some great things to do directly from the town center, many highlights may include a train or cable car to reach another nearby part of the region.

Hiking in Wengen

If you are visiting Wengen, odds are you are up for some hiking. Luckily, there are plenty of hiking trails that can be visited just outside your doorstep.

When it comes to hiking in the Jungfrau region, the trails will be tagged with different numbers.

The hiking trails mentioned below are those that connect directly from Wengen. I will also be mentioning a few other top options in the following sections.

Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg (#41)

This is a great hike that connects Wengen with Kleine Scheidegg as you get some up close and personal views to the beautiful Jungfrau mountain range up above.

Wengen to Wengernalp (#42/#43)

There are two trails that connect Wengen to Wengernalp, which eventually meet up with one another. During these trails you will get as close as can be to the mountains.

Wengen to Burglauenen (#44)

A downhill hike from Wengen to Burglauenen will bring you to the valley floor. It is a steeper terrain altogether as you end up directly between Grindelwald and Zweilutschinen.

Wengen to Mannlichen (#45/#46)

While you can easily take the quick cable car up to Mannlichen, hiking up is also an option. There are two trails that zig zag their ways up the mountainside to the top of the cable car station.

Wengen to Lauterbrunnen (#48/#49)

Instead of taking the train down to Lauterbrunnen (or back up), there are two hiking trails that connect the valley floor up to Wengen village.

Wengen Hikes

While the hikes above start/end directly in Wengen, there are several other nearby hikes that are well worth the effort.

The first of those is the short Royal Walk (#47) that connects the top of the Mannlichen cable car station with the summit of Mannlichen.

Overall, it is an easy and short route to climb as you gain impressive views of the mountains and learn a little history along the way.

Learn More : Read up about the hike in the Royal Walk trail guide up on the site

The Royal Walk Mannlichen Summit

Panorama Trail

Perhaps the top nearby hike to Wengen is the Panorama Trail (#33), that connects Mannlichen with Kleine Scheidegg.

In my mind, this is a must do type of hike as you cross along the side of the mountainside and towards the Jungfrau peaks. The Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau will all be in view as you make your way on this 90 minute (mostly flat) trail to Kleine Scheidegg.

Take your time, enjoy the views, and you can then take a train back to Wengen from Kleine Scheidegg at day’s end.

Learn More : Check out the Panorama Trail guide that will take you from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg

Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg Eiger View

The Eiger Trail

The last nearby hike I will mention here is the Eiger Trail. The trail starts/ends in Eigergletscher and Alpiglen. Many people like to end in Alpiglen as that would be a downhill hike. You can certainly do it in either direction though!

To get to Eigergletscher from Wengen, you can take a train to Kleine Scheidegg and then hop on another short ride to Eigergletscher (or simply hike between the two). After arriving at the starting point, it is just a downhill walk to Alpiglen. Once all wrapped up, you will just need to take the train back down to Wengen.

Helpful Tip : if you can handle the hiking, combining the Panorama Trail and the Eiger Trail in one day is certainly possible

Feel free to check out many of the other top hikes in Switzerland during a visit

Mannlichen & Aerial Cableway

Whether you want to take part of some hikes around Mannlichen or not, the cable car up there from the village is still one of the best things to do in Wengen.

While the ride lasts just less than 10 minutes, once up top, you will be welcome to some great surrounding views of the Jungfrau mountains.

You can take some time to walk around the area, enjoy the views, and just sit back to relax.

Even if you aren’t a hiker, I would still suggest the short and easy route up the Royal Walk. It shouldn’t be strenuous for most people, and the surrounding views will be even better!

Mannlichen Cablecar

Jungfraujoch

One of the fan favorite attractions that is easily accessible from Wengen is the Jungfraujoch , also known as the “Top of Europe”.

This will entail a bit of transportation as you first take the train up to Kleine Scheidegg and then switch onto the train that heads through the mountain and up to the top station.

Once up top, the views will be unparalleled to other accessible mountaintops (besides for Schilthorn potentially).

On one side will be views looking down back towards Wengen, the rest of the valley, and mountain towns. On the other side will be never ending views of the Aletsch Glacier out in front of you.

In addition to the views you can check out the Snow Fun Park, Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation, and take a short hike to the Monchsjoch Hut.

Jungfraujoch Picture

Visit the Lauterbrunnen Valley

Due to its very close proximity to Wengen, a visit down to the Lauterbrunnen Valley is simply a must do.

While you will be able to see the valley from above, walking through it and seeing the highlights will be a whole other type of experience.

One easy way to go about a day trip down to the valley can go something like this:

Start with the train ride from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen Station. Once you arrive, enjoy views of Staubbach Falls and spend some time walking around the village itself.

Staubbach Falls

After wrapping up with the town center, follow the trail that heads further into the valley . Along the way, you will get views of the mountains directly ahead, with waterfalls sweeping their way off the valley walls on either side.

There simply is nothing else like this!

Along the way, you will also pass by Trummelbach Falls . This is a waterfall that can’t be seen from the valley. Instead you will find it within the walls of the cliffside.

Pay the small fee, head up the stairs (or elevator), and take in the rushing waters from various viewing platforms.

Once all done with Trummelbach, you can continue to the end of the valley at Stechelberg. From there feel free to hop on the bus back to Lauterbrunnen , and then back up to Wengen.

Lauterbrunnen Waterfalls

Lauterbrunnen, Murren, & Schilthorn Day Trip

If Lauterbrunnen wasn’t enough for you, there is a way to make this an even longer and more exciting day trip. This can be done in either direction but be aware of the weather at top of Schilthorn (if it’s clear for only a portion of the day, work your schedule around it!).

  • Wengen to Lauterbrunnen Train
  • Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp Cable Car
  • Grutschalp to Murren Mountain Railway
  • Murren to Schilthorn Cable Car
  • Enjoy Schilthorn & Birg!
  • Cable Car back to Murren for Lunch
  • Murren to Stechelberg Cable Car
  • Walk from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen
  • Stop at Trummelbach Falls
  • Train from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen

Feel free to check out the Schilthorn overview that goes about this awesome day trip.

Schilthorn View

Day Trip to Grindelwald

Speaking of day trips, you can also take one out to the other valley town of Grindelwald. From there, you will have the chance to take part of several more activities and attractions.

The First cable car will take you up to some beautiful hiking trails such as the Bachalpsee Lake .

It also leads you to some great kid activities including the First Flyer, First Glider, First Mountain Cart, and First Trottibike.

Another option is to take the cable car from Grindelwald up to Pfinstegg. Once up top, kids and even adults can hop on the toboggan run. For those hikers, you continue along the trail to the Barregg hut.

No matter what type of activity you want to do, Grindelwald offers many great options to choose from.

First Cable Car View

Walk Around Town

While there is so much to enjoy on the outskirts of Wengen, you should also plan to spend some much-needed time around town too!

Wengen is a very picturesque place to visit and since it is car free, it is that much more enjoyable. Spend some time just walking the streets, exploring the town center, and of course taking in the views along the way.

If you happen to be spending several days in Wengen, I would definitely recommend taking a “rest day” to just hang out in Wengen itself.

Wengen Downtown

Mini Golfing

If you are bringing your kids along for the trip and want to spend a portion of the day keeping them entertained, then head on over to the mini golf course.

The 18 hole Lauberhorn Crazy Golf course is the perfect activity to keep the kids busy . It is located directly in the town center next to the Mannlichen cableway.

A spa day in Wengen is going to do the trick if you are experiencing a poor weather day or just need a well-deserved break after hitting the trails.

If having a spa handy is important to you, then I would recommend booking a hotel that includes one. A couple top choices would be:

  • Hotel Silberhorn
  • Beausite Park Hotel

On the other hand, you can always book a day pass to many of the spa hotels in the area. This way you will not only have the ability to stay at the hotel of your choice but it also gives you the chance to enjoy a day of spa relaxation.

Feel free to also check out some of the other top spa hotels in Switzerland during a visit!

Wengen Spa

Skiing in Wengen

Admittedly, most of the above is geared towards summer visits to Wengen. But that is not to say it is just a summer destination. If you happen to be visiting in the wintertime, there is plenty to enjoy too.

One of the top activities would of course be heading out on the ski slopes . While there are several ski areas in the Jungfrau region, the Wengen-Grindelwald ski area offers plenty of options for all levels.

Altogether you will find nearly 50 trails that wrap their way around the whole region. Connecting the trails are various ski lifts, cable cars, and mountain railways.

If you plan accordingly, you can even ski right back down into Wengen at day’s end!

Sledging / Tobogganing

If you are not a skier, no worries! The area also offers the ability to take part of sledging runs. Simply sit down in your sled, and head down the slopes.

It is a great activity to take part of for those that want to fully enjoy their winter fun in the mountains of Wengen.

Feel free to check out the latest Jungfrau sledging information for your trip!

Wengen Skiing

4) Weather in Wengen

As you can tell by now, many of the top things to do in and around Wengen are outdoor activities. Due to this, the weather will need to cooperate for you to take part.

Since Wengen is located in the mountain region, the weather can be very hit or miss. Some days may start out nice and sunny but soon turn rainy and overcast.

I would recommend using Meteoblue as a helpful weather app that is a more accurate forecasting tool when it comes to mountain weather.

Pay attention to when the sun will be out and plan you activities around the best weather windows possible.

Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate entirely, you still have the chance to take part of some indoor activities (such as heading to the spa), or enjoying the waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Wengen Weather

5) Wengen Restaurants

Throughout Wengen village, there are a variety of different restaurant to choose from. Some of these will be standalone restaurants while others will be located within hotels.

  • Pasta & More
  • Golden India
  • Hotel Restaurant Baren
  • Ristorante Da Sina
  • Hotel Restaurant Bernerhof
  • Crystal Bar
  • Restaurant Allmend

Depending on your itinerary day to day, it is possible that you may be having a meal in some other villages along the way. Whether it is Kleine Scheidegg, Murren, Lauterbrunnen, or Grindelwald, you will find plenty of options all around.

Wengen Village

6) How Many Days Do You Need in Wengen

When visiting Wengen and the Jungfrau Region in general, I would recommend at least 3 days to see a little bit of everything. While you do not need to spend three full days in Wengen itself, this amount of time will be great to explore the overall area of the Jungfrau.

You can spend a day in Wengen and up in Mannlichen, another day in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, and a third day near Grindelwald.

Overall, there is plenty to keep you busy for a week or more all around the region. However, giving yourself at least 3 days will be a solid amount of time to take advantage of some top highlights.

Tip : give yourself a buffer day in case you get hampered by the weather at one point or another.

Wengen Mountains

7) Which is Better – Wengen, Murren or Grindelwald

If you are heading into the Jungfrau region, odds are you are asking yourself the question of which town is best to stay in – Wengen, Murren, or Grindelwald.

All said and done, any one of these three is a solid option to choose from (in addition to Lauterbrunnen).

Wengen and Murren are car free mountain towns. Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen are easily accessible valley towns. They are all interconnected by mountain transport and can be visited one way or another during a trip.

When making that final decision, it really comes down to personal preference. If you are still struggling (and you have enough time to spare), why not split time between a couple of them?

At the end of the day, I have a hard time believing that you won’t fully enjoy your time in the Jungfrau.

Still Deciding : Check out the Wengen, Murren or Grindelwald overview that goes through the pros and cons of each.

8) Is Wengen Worth Visiting?

Whether you are thinking of staying in Wengen or visiting as part of a day trip, Wengen is without a doubt worth visiting.

Being at the center of the Jungfrau region, perched up on the mountainside, Wengen is going to be one of the most picturesque places to visit during your time in Switzerland.

Having the chance to just walk the town, enjoy the view, and be steps away from the hiking trails, is all you can ask for when it comes to Swiss mountain towns.

If you are thinking about visiting Wengen, I would highly recommend adding it onto your list for a Switzerland itinerary .

Views from Wengen

That wraps up an overview to the best things to do in Wengen, Switzerland. If you have any questions or comments, be sure to add them in below.

Also, don’t forget to check out the other Switzerland itineraries and guides up on the site.

Have fun out there and safe travels!
