Although the store is hard to navigate—rolling suitcases are stacked high on shelves, while upright carry-ons and duffels flood the floor—a quick scan of the room from a narrow walkway dividing the space will reveal multiple choices you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. Kenneth Cole Reaction wheeled uprights and vibrant Heys hard-side polycarbonate carry-ons make boring black luggage look downright depressing. In addition to fancy pens and midrange watches, the back of the shop stocks small travel accessories, Eagle Creek fleece neck pillows and Travelon digital luggage scales.

For an educational crash course on all things luggage-related, head to this official Tumi retailer, opened by Saeed Zia in 1982. His son, who manages the store, is a luggage whiz who can explain the history behind each brand, list product details as if he’s memorized the specs and even namecheck the celebrities who own the items. .

Whether you’re traveling by train, plane or automobile, this all-encompassing shop has luggage, accessories and commuter-friendly toiletries to make any trip feel first class. When Insoek Paek opened this luggage, handbag and accessories store in 1989, he wanted to create a neighborhood shop with a European feel. He did exactly that by stocking the neatly organized bag emporium with international brands such as Jack Gomme from France and Italian line Mywalit. Last-minute types who always find themselves running to the gate should invest in Tumi rolling carry-ons or Victorinox light-weight bags with rotating wheels for quicker sprints. Packing Cubes For New York – Wandrd Packing Cubes

In case you have never used them, packing cubes are little compression cubes that allow you to neatly pack clothes in in order to help facilitate better packing. They allow you to pack more stuff, and to keep it all better organised.

For the longest time, I thought that packing cubes were a superfluous indulgence, but boy was I wrong. Now I never travel without a few.

These ones from WANDRD are great quality and excellent value for money. Get them on your NYC packing list now!

Best Sim For New York – HolaFly eSim

The good news about New York is that there is extensive 4g and 5g Internet coverage, taxi apps and food delivery apps. The bad news is that if you are coming from outside the USA , your native SIM card will not work and so you will not be able to access any of this online goodness until you rectify that particular situation.

You can waste time hanging around phone shops queuing to get a plastic sim or you can simply install a eSim onto your phone before you leave home. You just access the HolaFly site, choose the Bali/Indonesia package, download it and off you go – you are online the moment you land at the airport.

eSims are easier to set up and better than the environment than plastic sims. The downside is that not all phones are eSim ready.

You probably own “city clothes:” already so won’t need to worry too much about what to wear in New York. However, do bear in mind that summers can be dangerously hot and winters absolutely bloody freezing. Therefore, make sure you do pack for the season.

In terms of style etiquette, New York is probably the best dressed city in America and if you want to run with the hipsters and fashionista’s, you will need to make the efforts. That said, this is the US so you will still fit in perfectly even if you wear your pants halfway down your legs and match socks with sandals.

Best Jacket For New York – Arcteryx Beta AR

Did you know that the surface of the earth is over 70% covered in water? And you know how that water got there? Yep because it tends to here rain here on planet earth quite a lot! New York city’s climate varies between the seasons. It can be wet and drizzly and a good rain jacket can be proper life saver.

There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wing gear for it. Don’t let a bit (of a lot) of rain ruin your trip and make sure you are ready with some top notch rain gear.

This is our pick of the many rain jackets we have tried. It’s reliable & stylish and looks good worn out in the mountains or in city bars.

Note that if you are visiting in the cold months of winter you may want to layer this as New York does get well and truly cold.

The days exploring New York city can be long and it its worth bringing along a day pack. They are great for carrying water, hat’s and gloves and for packing sandwiches for lunch. We love Osprey products and this daypack is our personal pick.

Hanging Toiletry Bag

Another backpacker/traveler favorite for staying organized is a  hanging toiletry bag . It’s extremely helpful to have all of your accessories neatly gathered in one bag that you can hang for easy accessibility, especially when counter space isn’t plentiful or even available. A well-organized bag is worth having whether you’re tree whilst camping or a hook in the wall – it helps to have quick access to all your stuff.

Historically, I have been the guy who has my stuff all over the bathroom, so getting one of these things really changed the toiletry game for me. Plus they are not too expensive either. A no-brainer essential. 

As far as toiletry bag go, we recommend the Nomatic Toiletry Bag. It is made from excellent, high quality material that is water and stain resistant and offers some excellent organisational capacity. It is a high spec piece of travel gear that will last you some years.

Planner/Travel Journal

Keeping a journal is one of the best things to do when traveling. The Drifter Leather Journal by Kodiak is our favorite, it works great for digital nomads and organized backpackers, and can be used as planner or a dream diary – whatever you want!

Money Belt – By Pacsafe

Whilst New York is not particularly dangerous these days, crime can still happen and tourists are sometimes targeted. In particular, a few tourists have been spring in Central Park after dark so caution is advised.

Therefore it is always a good idea to use a money belt to hide your cash just in case something does go wrong.

In our view, it is worth spending a bit of money and buying a good quality money belt. Cheap ones will fall apart in no time.

Thermal Layer For Winter

If you are visiting New York during the depths of winter, prepare for some serious cold. C’mon man, I mean popular music is full of references to this from The Mama and the Papa’s “California Dreaming” to Simon & Garfunkel complaining of how the ‘New York City Winters Are Bleeding Me’!

A good thermal layer can make all the difference between enjoying your Christmas New York trip, and spending the whole time shivering and hiding from the New York weather. I even wear one of these in the UK during winter.

Don’t risk hypothermia, add this to your New York packing list.

On top of the essential items listed above, here is an additional suggested checklist of what to pack for a New York trip:

• 1-2 pairs of comfortable pants/jeans
• 1-2 pairs of shorts (summer/late spring)
• A few pairs of socks
• (Sexy) underwear x 2/3
• Ladies: a few dresses, pants, outfits, or desired lady apparel for a night on the town. Whatever makes you comfy! 
• Dudes: A few collard shirts or something half-way decent for a night on the town. Whatever makes you comfy! 
• Smartphone with a good camera for photos if you are not bringing an actual camera
• Portable power bank  for charging your phone on the go
• Phone charger
• Amazon Kindle  for reading by the pool
• Copy of your passport just in case
• Cash (not too much, there are ATM machines everywhere
• Packable Towel

One of the quickest ways to ruin a trip to New York City? Overpacking. 

New York’s sidewalks are a maze of construction, grates, and garbage. Toss in hordes of tourists and locals with no patience for slow walkers, and you’ll understand why this is a terrible place to be dragging around a massive suitcase.

The good news is that it’s easy to fit everything you need for a trip to NYC into a carry-on-sized backpack .

Take it from a local. I’ve lived in the city for more than a decade and hosted dozens of out-of-towners who didn’t touch half of what they’d lugged to my fourth-floor walk-up. I’m here to help you pare down your New York City packing list and bring only what you need, any time of year. That way, you can experience the city as it should be: with as little holding you back as possible.

The Best Backpack for NYC

First thing’s first: you need a backpack that’s up for the challenge of NYC.

A daypack is also a must. Why? Midtown Manhattan might be convenient for reaching tourist sites, but it’s also an overcrowded, overpriced nightmare. Do yourself a favor and book your accommodation away from the tourist center, then toss essentials in a bag like Tortuga’s Laptop Backpack so you don’t have to trek back to your hotel until the evening.

NYC Packing Tips

Pack for the right season..

New York City has blazing hot summers, frigid winters, and temperate springs and autumns. Your packing list will depend entirely on the time of year you’re visiting, so we’ve broken down what to bring for each season below.

Wear comfortable shoes.

Don’t leave for New York City without a pair of comfortable shoes . Walking is often the most convenient, and always the cheapest, way to get around, so prepare to pound the pavement with some sturdy footwear. 

Sneakers, slip-ons, and supportive flats are great nine months out of the year. In winter, pack waterproof boots that can handle patches of black ice and slush. Avoid spiky heels or anything that threatens to give you blisters. Also, this isn’t the time to break in a new pair of kicks.

New Yorkers prioritize comfort and won’t judge you for wearing shoes that look like they come from the back of your grandparents’ closet. That said, you’ll get the side-eye for wearing flip-flops down Manhattan’s filthy sidewalks.

Bring quality basics, not technical gear.

There’s no need to dress up to wait in line for the Empire State Building, but you also don’t want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed.

To blend in, follow the tenets of a travel capsule wardrobe : pack quality, wrinkle-resistant basics in a single color palette so you can mix and match items. Think casual but polished, comfortable but not sloppy.

The stereotypes about New Yorkers and dark colors are also somewhat true. When in doubt, wear black.

Include one fancy outfit.

Pack a nice outfit if you plan to attend a Broadway show, ballet, or opera. You don’t need a tuxedo or a ball gown, but you’ll feel out of place at Lincoln Center in shorts and a grubby t-shirt. 

A button-up shirt and nice slacks will work well, as will a cocktail dress or blouse and skirt combination (just add thermal tights in the winter).

Swanky clubs sometimes have strict dress codes, so do your research if those appeal to you.

Don’t stress if you forget something.

If your hotel or vacation rental doesn’t have something on hand, chances are the bodega across the street will. Corner stores are ubiquitous, and New York City also has some of the best shopping on the planet. 

You can find pretty much anything you’d ever need within a ten-minute walk, so don’t worry too much about being unprepared.

NYC Packing List

This universal packing list is designed for one week in New York City, any time of year. We’ve included adjustments to this basic list for summer, winter, fall, and spring travel below.

For trips longer than a week, plan to do laundry. 

• 2 casual bottoms ( jeans , pants , or shorts , depending on the season)
• 3 casual tops ( t-shirts or tank tops, depending on the season)
• 1 nice bottom (black jeans, chinos, or a skirt / dress )
• 1-2 nice tops (button-ups or blouses)
• 1 layering piece (lightweight sweater , cardigan, sweatshirt , flannel, fleece, etc.)
• A warm coat (winter) or light jacket (spring/fall)
• 1 pair of comfortable walking shoes
• 1 pair of dressier shoes (these should still be comfortable!)
• Socks and underwear for one week
• A hat (a baseball cap for the spring and summer, a beanie for the winter and fall)
• Sunglasses (even in winter; the glare off the snow can be killer)
• Portable charger (you’ll spend most days walking around away from your hotel, so be sure to bring a battery pack)
• Water bottle (the tap water in NYC is great)
• Hand sanitizer (use whenever you get off the subway; you don’t know who, or what, has touched those poles)

What Not to Pack

• A money belt. There are pickpockets in NYC, as in any big city, but keep your wits about you and your purse/backpack zippered shut and you’ll be fine. All a money belt does is tell everyone you’re from out of town. ( Fanny packs , meanwhile, are everywhere.)
• Uncomfortable shoes. You will not wear these, or you will wear them and then deeply, deeply regret your choices.
• An umbrella. They’re cheap and readily available at corner stores. Don’t waste the bag space.

NYC Winter Packing List

New York winter really isn’t that bad. Yes, it’s cold. Yes, it gets dark at 4:00 p.m. Yes, you will accidentally step in a puddle of slush up to your calf.

But winter also means twinkling lights strung up across the city, bars with roaring fireplaces, hot toddies, ice skating, and more. Winter in New York City can be delightful, as long as you dress for the weather. 

This is a walking city, and it remains a walking city even when the temperatures dip into the single digits. Bring a warm, insulated coat that at least reaches your hips (people regularly wear puffers down to their knees or ankles in the depths of winter).

Weather-resistant boots and warm socks are also a must; at any given time, the sidewalks might be covered in snow, dirty slush, rock salt, or all of the above.

Layer your coat over a warm sweater and top things off with a warm hat, scarf , and gloves . That’ll keep you cozy whether you’re wandering the holiday markets or just bar hopping.

• 2 pairs of casual pants or jeans
• 1 pair of dressier pants, chinos, slacks, etc. (women might consider fleece-lined tights if you’re intent on wearing a skirt or dress)
• 1 long-sleeved button-up top or nice blouse
• 2 warm sweaters (wear one on the plane)
• 2 casual, long-sleeved tops for layering under your sweaters
• Winter coat (a wool peacoat or an insulated puffer; wear this on the plane)
• 1 warm beanie
• 1 pair of gloves
• Weather-resistant or waterproof boots (think stylish boots, not hiking)

NYC Summer Packing List

Summer in New York City is so fun but can be so gross. This is the season of outdoor concerts, patio dining, drinks by the water, and picnics in the park. But by mid-July, the city feels like a swamp. Underground subway stations can reach over 100 degrees. You are going to sweat.

Stay cool(ish) by packing lightweight, breathable fabrics. It’s too sticky for jeans during the day, so stick to shorts, flowy skirts, linen pants, etc.

Pack some extra shirts or undergarments to replace the ones you’ll inevitably sweat through by noon. Sunscreen, sunblock, and a hat are also vital.

• 3 lightweight bottoms ( shorts , flowy skirts, linen pants, etc.)
• 1 nice pair of pants, a sundress , or skirt for dinners, the theater, etc.
• 4 casual t-shirts or tank tops
• 1-2 button-up short sleeve shirts or blouses
• 1 lightweight cardigan , hoodie , or shirt jacket for aggressive air conditioning
• 1 swimsuit (for trips to Coney Island, the hotel pool, kayaking on the Hudson, etc.)
• 1 nicer pair of shoes for dinner, drinks, theater, etc. (white leather sneakers, block-heeled sandals, etc.)
• A small pack of baby wipes for the dirt and dust that sticks to you throughout the day.
• Hair tools. It’s too humid for straighteners.
• Jeans. They’re too heavy for the weather.
• Flimsy flip-flops. Your feet will get filthy. (Sandals with some height off the ground or toe bumpers, like Birkenstocks, are fine.)

NYC Fall Packing List

Fall in New York is magical. The air is crisp, the leaves are changing, and people are excited to step outside without instantly being drenched in sweat. 

Early fall remains temperate, but evenings get chilly in October and November. Keep comfortable by dressing in layers, preferably in temperature-regulating fabrics like merino wool . 

New Yorkers also tend to lean hard into each season’s aesthetic, so you’ll fit right in with flannel, fleece, and leather boots.

• 3 casual tops ( t-shirts or tank tops)
• 1 pair of dressier pants, chinos, or skirt and tights
• 1-2 long-sleeved button-up shirts or blouses
• 1 layering piece (lightweight sweater , cardigan, or sweatshirt )
• Midweight jacket (a leather jacket is perfect; a short wool coat, shirt jacket, or cropped puffer will also work well)
• 1 nicer pair of shoes for dinner, drinks, theater, etc.
• Baseball cap
• Sandals. Though there are some hot days even into October, no one wears open-toed shoes past mid-September.

NYC Spring Packing List

Spring is one of the best times to visit New York City. People are cheerier for post-4:00 p.m. sunsets, and while the weather can be fickle, it’s almost never too hot or too cold.

Spring and fall are essentially the same in terms of layering needs, but, again, New Yorkers fully embrace each season’s vibe. If fall is all about flannels and leather boots, then spring is about florals, white sneakers, flowy dresses, etc. Spring can also be rainy, so be sure to pack a jacket.

• Lightweight jacket (a jean jacket, shirt jacket, or light bomber is perfect)
• 1 nicer pair of shoes for dinner, drinks, theater, etc. 
• Shorts or mini skirts. It’s not warm enough yet.

NYC 3-Day Weekend Packing List

It’s easy to pack for a long weekend in New York City. The city is huge; no one will care, or notice, that you’ve worn the same t-shirt three days in a row. 

Stick to odor-resistant fabrics like merino wool and wear your heaviest items (like jeans, boots, and jackets). You might even be able to fit everything you need into a personal item .

• 1 pair of casual pants or shorts, depending on the season
• 2 casual tops ( t-shirts , tank tops, or long-sleeved tops, depending on the season)
• 1 nice button-up shirt or blouse
• A lightweight jacket or warm coat, depending on the season (wear this on the plane; you can skip this entirely for summer trips)
• Socks and underwear for three days
• Hat (baseball cap or beanie, depending on the season)

New York City has it all, and it’s all best experienced with as little luggage as possible. Giant suitcases and packed sidewalks don’t mix, so travel carry-on-only by packing only what you need. That includes:

• Comfortable shoes
• A weather-appropriate jacket
• Casual but put-together outfits

What’s the Best Cross-Body Travel Bag?

Whether you’re heading to Tokyo for two weeks or simply doing a few days in Montreal, a cross-body bag is a very practical thing to pack for a trip. Unlike a slippery tote , a cross body will stay on your arm while you remove your shoes and simultaneously scramble for your boarding pass at security. And once you reach your destination, a cross body feels a slightly more secure way to carry around important items, like, say, your passport. While the words “cross-body travel bag” might bring to mind a stodgy nylon number with a few too many zippers, that doesn’t have to be the case. We talked to nine travel editors, trip planners, and a documentary photographer to hear about their go-to bags, including an ultra-secure, gorpcore-esque nylon version with plenty of interior pockets, and a structured cylindrical leather option elegant enough to carry from a day spent touring to a nice dinner. Read on for bags that don’t scream tourist, and that you might even consider using once you get home.

Best leather cross-body travel bags

Jacinta O’Halloran, a senior editor at Fodor’s Travel , says she loves this Madewell leather cross body so much that she just bought a second one. “I’ve used it in Thailand, in the Amazon, in Barcelona, in Ireland, and I use it every day in New York,” she says. “I can fit a paperback book, a wallet , passport, glasses case, and a small bottle of water in it.” The bag doesn’t have compartments, so O’Halloran uses smaller pouches (a favorite is Clare V’s leopard print one ) to organize her keys, lip gloss, pens , and other small items. And while many traditional travel bags are made of nylon, O’Hallaron says the leather saves her extra packing space: “I used to bring an additional ‘nice’ bag for events and dinners,” she says, “but I find this slim, unfussy, leather design easily takes me from airport to dinner.” The affordable price point is a draw, too: “I don’t have to be precious with it,” she says.

If you prefer a leather bag with built-in compartments, TripSavvy editorial director Laura Ratliff recommends Lo & Sons’ The Pearl bag, which she says is made from “super soft” leather and has a design that makes organizing passports, boarding passes, headphones , a Kindle, and whatever else she’s carrying easy. “It has three different ‘chambers’ for storage inside,” Ratliff says. “It’s a sleek bag that looks just as at home at a nice restaurant as it does on the Global Entry line.”

A slightly larger option — big enough to fit a laptop, even — comes to us from Lyndsey Matthews, Destination News editor at AFAR , who says she’s used Everlane’s Form Bag almost every day since she bought it a few years ago. “When I’m in New York, I use it as a shoulder bag for commuting (it can fit my MacBook Air vertically along with my wallet, phone, book, and a water bottle ),” says Matthews. “When I travel, I extend the shoulder strap so it can be used as a crossbody and swap my laptop out for my camera and an extra layer in case it gets cold.” The bag has a magnetic top closure, which Matthews has found helps her move from place to place with ease. “The magnetic top closure is strong enough so that your stuff won’t go flying out on the conveyor belt at airport security or under the airplane seat, but easy enough to open when you actually need to get something out of it.” she says. Matthews told us the bag is lighter than other leather bags she’s used, and doesn’t weigh down shoulders during a long day of walking. It’s also a useful day-to-night bag: “While it’s big enough to fit all of the things I need for the day, it doesn’t look gigantic so I can also use it at night when I go out to dinner,” she says.

Rag & Bone’s small messenger bag may be pricier than some of the other picks on this list, but For the Love of Travel founder and CEO Tara Cappel says it’s worth the splurge. “I think it’s a great travel bag for so many reasons,” she says. “The main compartment zips closed and there’s a sneaky back compartment for important items like your passport, credit card, etc. Also, the fact that it’s leather and not nylon means it doesn’t scream ‘tourist’ when you’re walking around foreign cities.” Unlike the other leather bags on this list, this one can become a clutch — the strap is completely removable. And for Coppel it’s the Goldilocks of bag sizes: “It’s big enough to hold all of the essentials but small enough to fit into a backpack or suitcase when not in use — or when you’re trying to comply with the two-item carry-on rule,” she says.

Rachel Coleman, social media lead at Berlin-based travel booking agency GetYourGuide , told us that she’s trying to reduce the number of items that she buys, and hone in on ones that are sustainable. This Nisolo cross body fits the bill — the brand produces their leather goods under fair-trade conditions in Peru, and is the right size and shape for both traveling and everyday use. “It’s big enough to fit all the contents of my purse plus a book, a water bottle and a few bags of snacks,” Coleman says. “And the leather is sturdy enough to stand up on its own so my things don’t spill all over the airplane.” The handle knots differentiate the bag from other shopper-style options , and the classic color options make it ideal to go “from a day of travel to a night out in a new city,” Coleman says.

Best cross-body leather bucket bags

Whether you prefer a bucket bag or something more square really comes down to personal preference — but should you want something a little more cylindrical, Vanessa Montenegro, the head of marketing and partnerships at traveling club Prior , suggests this (on sale) one from WANT Les Essentiels. “ I love that this bag is structured and polished but functional, which makes it perfect for travel,” she says. “It’s versatile and works for use in-transit and stylish enough to wear out when I get there — whether I’m exploring a new city, headed to meetings, or meeting a dinner date.” Despite its compact size, Montenegro says it fits all of her necessities, including a passport, face mist , wallet, and something to read. The adjustable strap is also removable, should you want to convert the cross body into a handheld style.

Travel + Leisure editor in chief Jacqui Gifford is also a fan of a cylindrical bag for travel — specifically, this petite zippered one from Paravel, a company that Gifford tells us is known for their statement duffels and wheeled carry ons . “There’s something even more appealing to me about the simplicity of this bag: the cylindrical shape, the leather detailing, the gold zipper,” she says.

If all of the neutral-toned bags are starting to feel a little plain, Gifford also likes this colorful number from Tory Burch. “The flower pattern really does work in any destination: Paris, Napa, Marrakesh,” she told us. “It’s destination neutral.” It’s a slightly smaller size than some of the other bags here, but just the right size for the essentials for a night-out on a trip, and goes with the kind of solid-colored basics one might opt for when traveling. “I would wear this with jeans and a white blouse , or a more formal dress in a solid color, or cut off white shorts and a navy t-shirt,” says Gifford.

Best nylon and fabric cross-body bags

Nylon, of course, is lighter than leather — and this classic from LeSportsac is a favorite of Lexie Silverman, who works for the group travel agency Travendly . “It definitely has enough room for a wallet, phone, and extra battery pack,” she says — noting that a water bottle or book might be a bit of a squeeze. The major draw for Silverman is the bag’s zipper pockets, which she says are secure enough to hold your passport during a day exploring. “It’s also super lightweight, and so easy to pack in another bag,” she says. “I’ve also found it to be pretty water resistant in case it rains when you are out and about.”

Silverman also likes this small bag from outdoor gear company Osprey, which she notes is not a traditional crossbody, but can be used as one if you extend the shoulder strap. It’s a bit larger than the LeSportsac and can hold a water bottle in addition to your wallet and phone, and, importantly, it also has a lot of zippered compartments and pockets. “Overall, the amount of pockets in this bag is great — especially for days when I have a lot of things with me,” Silverman says of the gorpcore-ish style. “I also like that one of the pockets folds over — it makes me feel like my valuables are that much more secure.”

Best extra-secure cross-body travel bag

Documentary photographer Maria de la Gaurdia says she has used this Travelon bag for years and highly recommends it. The bag features front pockets that actually lock, and a padded interior pocket that keeps your iPad safe and sound. De la Guardia says that the layout of the bag’s multiple pockets “actually make sense” for organizing sunglasses, iPhones, and notepads. Plus, she says, it’s not bulky, though it can carry a ton — “It hugs your body, has adjustable and even a removable strap, and has two adjustable side pockets for umbrellas or water bottles .” The adjustable strap makes it easy to wear the bag whether you’re in a T-shirt or a winter coat , and de la Guardia notes that the canvas makes it machine washable.
