The Tastiest Tour in Vancouver ~ Gourmet Ice Cream Tour

Food tours are nothing new, but have you ever heard of an ice cream tour? Us neither! Being the ice cream addict that I am, there was no question we had to go and indulge ourselves on the tastiest tour in Vancouver.  Off the eaten track tours recently started the gourmet ice cream tour in Vancouver and it has been a sell-out every tour. We actually were in town for the last tour of the season, talk about great timing.

We are no strangers to food tours, it’s our first choice of tours when in a new city. We have a long track record of food tours:

  • Street food tours in Bangkok , Thailand / Hanoi, Vietnam /Siem Reap, Cambodia
  • Espresso  & gelato tour in Rome, Italy
  • Wine & food in Milan, Italy
  • Gourmet food tour in Bologna, Italy
  • Balsamic & cheese food tour in Parma, Italy
  • Gourmet French food tour in Paris, France
  • Gourmet Belgium food tour in Brussels, Belgium
  • 14-course meal in Cape Town, South Africa
  • best of Portland food tour in Portland, Oregon
  • I’m for sure missing a few

This time, it was all about my personal favorite:  ICE CREAM!

1. railtown cafe.

Our tour started at Railtown cafe, which was within walking distance of our downtown Vancouver hotel the Wedgewood . We met our guide and group of 10 other ice cream lovers at 5 p.m. for the first taste of the tour. We started the tour by introducing ourselves and our favorite flavor of ice-cream. Just as I finished o ur first sample arrived consisting of 3 scoops: blueberry sorbet, coconut, and maple walnut.

Canada-Vancouver-ice cream tour-3

I am usually not a fan of fruity flavors but devoured the blueberry sorbet. It was like nothing I had ever had before, creamy and refreshing. The second scoop was my first taste of maple ice cream, which no one on gourmet ice cream tour could believe… they were all Canadians with maple being their favorite flavor. After my first bite, I now see why the Canadians love it so much. I highly dislike anything coconut, therefore my coconut scoop ended up in Adam’s bowl which he devoured with a smile!

2. Cadeaux Bakery

After we scraped our bowls it was time to hit the streets and make our way over to our second stop on our gourmet ice cream tour in Vancouver. About a 5-minute walk away was Cadeaux Bakery, where ice-cream sandwiches were waiting for us. We had our choice of vanilla ice cream or strawberry ice cream on a homemade chocolate shortbread cookie.

Adam and I both went with the classic vanilla ice cream sandwich. What sets this ice cream sandwich apart from any other I have ever had is the cookie… oooh the cookie! I didn’t want the last bite to come, and it did, I think my tongue cried. It’s safe to safe this was the highlight of the gourmet ice cream tour.

3. Soft Peaks

Our next stop Soft Peaks was a short walk away in the Gastown part of Vancouver. Soft Peaks is organic milk soft serve ice cream, which is something I had never heard of before. We tried their most famous flavor the honeycomb peak. It’s their signature swirl soft serve with a local honeycomb on top and sprinkled with cereal. This sounded all strange to me, but my tongue loved it. A little piece of honeycomb with every bite was a nice touch. NOTE: The smallest size at Soft Peaks puts other companies large to shame.

4. Twisted Ice Cream

We almost walked right by Twisted Ice Cream, as it is the smallest ice cream shop in British Columbia. I think you can see why…

Canada-Vancouver-ice cream tour-20

Get your twisted ice cream in a cup or a cone and add drizzles or toppings. On our ice cream tour, we had our ice cream drizzled with chocolate or coconut flakes. The creations are endless, stop by frequently as they change their drizzles & toppings weekly.

After a four-course meal consisting solely of ice cream, not only was I full, I was more than satisfied. If you find yourself in Vancouver during the summer months make sure to cool off with some ice cream! Also, make sure to check and see if there is room on Off the beaten track tours gourmet ice cream tour.

VANCOUVER — What's better than a scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day? Three scoops, an ice cream sandwich, soft serve drizzled with chocolate syrup and a vegan charcoal banana coconut confection, of course.

The tour began at Railtown Cafe in — where else — Railtown, an up-and-coming neighbourhood east of the more well-travelled Gastown. The cafe sells house-made ice cream, sorbet and vegan options made by pastry chef Alex Abley, who previously worked for famous Vancouver chocolatier Thomas Haas.

Hungry guests were each given a bowl containing strawberry and dulce de leche ice cream, as well as citrus pear sorbet. Most participants agreed the light, refreshing sorbet was the standout, although nine-year-old Taylor Smith from Winnipeg appeared torn choosing a favourite among all the delectable flavours.

The tour guide then took the group to see a few of the sights in Railtown, allowing for some calories to be burned off before the next stop. She showed off a bright blue house built at the turn of the 20th century that still sits alone among the industrial cranes and shipping containers of the busy port.

With a history lesson out of the way, the group's attention returned to ice cream. Guests were taken to the beautiful Cadeaux Bakery, also in Railtown, where perfect, fresh-baked pastries line a display case. Here, the group was introduced to the bakery's ice cream sandwich, a signature creation that is made in a different flavour every week.

The group sampled the classic vanilla sandwich. Marc Henri, dubbed a "cookie connoisseur" by his wife Brie Henri, said the chocolate cookies encasing the filling were perfectly made — firm, flavourful and not too crumbly.

"I don't want a cookie to fall apart. I want to savour it," he said.

The next stop was in Gastown at Soft Peaks Ice Cream. The shop serves organic soft-serve ice cream with unique toppings, including local honeycomb, Himalayan pink salt and sweet and sour Yuzu marmalade. Guests dove into a cup of creamy vanilla soft-serve topped with chocolate syrup and Tim Tams, an Australian chocolate biscuit.

At this point, some people were starting to feel stuffed, but were determined to eat the final treat waiting for them. Ellie Postin, from Southampton, England, was unequivocal when asked if she would make it to the end.

"Absolutely," she replied.

The big finale was waiting for guests at Virtuous Pie, a vegan pizza-and-ice cream restaurant in Chinatown. The tour guide asked whether they wanted a classic or adventurous flavour, and those who chose to walk on the wild side were not disappointed: they received either a bright-yellow scoop of turmeric black pepper or a tar-black serving of charcoal banana coconut.

Both unusual flavours were surprisingly tasty and had strong hints of coconut, one of the bases of the vegan dessert along with cashew milk. Even Smith, the youngest participant, dug into the charcoal banana coconut with aplomb.

For the less daring, the final flavour was an old favourite: mint and dark chocolate chip.

Bonnie Todd, founder and owner of Off The Eaten Track, launched the company in 2012 in Vancouver and later expanded to Victoria. Tours in Vancouver also include a brunch tour, an "urban eats" tour of Railtown and a "sip, savour and shop" tour of Main Street in East Vancouver.

"When I decided to launch the company, the philosophy was to take people out of touristy neighbourhoods and show them a part of Vancouver that wasn't necessarily obvious," said Todd.

"That's how I like to travel. I didn't want to get caught up in the tourist traps. I wanted to find out where the locals ate. Hence the name 'Off The Eaten Track,' and that's why we launched in really local neighbourhoods."

All I can say is thank goodness there is some walking to be done on the Off the Eaten Track’s gourmet ice cream tour, which serves up four decadent desserts in one hour.

“We launched this tour in July 2015 thinking it would just be a temporary tour (something fun for one summer) but we sold out of tickets last year and added more dates, so I thought, ‘Why not do it again this year?’” said Off the Eaten Track food tour company owner Bonnie Todd. “I think the tour is popular because it’s a fun excuse midweek to overindulge in something that gives most people a lot of pleasure.”

The tour runs every Wednesday (until Sept. 28) at 5 p.m. and costs $29.99 (book ahead of time). Over an hour, you will hit four sweet spots in the Railtown and Gastown areas.

“I noticed the high concentration of places making gourmet ice cream,” said Todd, whose company also runs a Railtown Urban Eats tour. “I like that it’s a mix of ice cream shops (Soft Peaks, Twisted) but also a restaurant (Railtown Cafe) and a bakery (Cadeaux). It’s also a nice area for a stroll in the summer with lots of history, and it’s downtown and easy for locals and tourists to get to.”

The tour begins at the Railtown Café (get their focaccia bread if you know what’s good for you).

“I’m so happy,” said tour goer Valeria Nayanzina, who was almost vibrating she was so excited. “Ice cream is my favourite thing ever.”

Lucky for her, her pal Nikola Miloradovic picked up on Nayanzina’s deep love of the cool dessert and surprised her for her 22nd birthday with this tour.

“I didn’t know what to expect but I assumed there would be ice cream somehow because I really love ice cream,” said Nayanzina, who admitted during the tour that when she travels, visiting ice cream shops is always part of the plan.

Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion.

Both Miloradovic and Nayanzina are architectural students from Waterloo University doing summer internships here in Vancouver.

“It’s good to see the city through food; how food affects a city,” said Miloradovic. “Even as architecture students we don’t get to do that.”

The tour kicked off with a bowl of three small scoops of traditional hard ice cream. There was pistachio, dulce de leche and a vegan coconut that didn’t taste like it was lacking in anything.

While we sampled, Todd began the educational part of the tour and talked about the history of ice cream. To avoid turning this into a term paper, let’s just say ice cream evolved from a sort of sorbet (fruit and ice mixture). There was more about cream being added in the 17 th century, but it was hard to hear over the birthday girl’s mmmmmm’s.

The tour left the Railtown Café and headed west on Railway Street to Main Street. We stopped in front of one of Vancouver’s more colourful sites.

“This is the No. 5 Orange. It’s one of Vancouver’s most famous strip clubs,” said Todd as the tour gang looked at the bright orange building. “In the 1980s it was really popular with visiting rock bands.”

Now there’s fun fact you won’t find in any guidebook.

The tour headed just half a block west and entered the tasteful all-white confines of the Cadeaux Bakery.

The three-year old bakery, known for its elaborate cakes and delicate pastries, adds the ice cream sandwich (homemade ice cream and salted chocolate wafers) to its menu in the summer. Be warned, the regular portion is about the size of DVD case.

According to Todd, the ice cream sandwich first appeared on the streets of Brooklyn in the early 1900s when an ice cream vendor added the outer cookie as means to keep the melting mess to minimum.

“Everything cool comes from Brooklyn,” said Todd.

After Cadeaux we continued west and Todd continued with more ice cream information. China, it seems, consumes the most on the whole and the U.S. still holds the record for personal consumption. The ice cream sundae is called that because a bunch of religious do-gooders at some point in the 1920s thought that the consumption of creamy, cool treats on a Sunday was a sin. My God, imagine what they would have thought about brunch and those evil mimosas?

The third stop on the tour landed us at Soft Peaks soft-serve ice cream shop on Alexander.

“Oh, we know this place,” Miloradovic said. “We come here all the time. We work in Gastown.”

The word on Soft Peaks is not only that it serves the newly trending soft-serve type of ice cream, but also it’s all-organic. It is kind of retro cool; they add the Australian standby cookie Tim Tams to their mud slides.

Another fun fact: Tim Tams are named after an Aussie horse that won the 1958 Kentucky Derby.

“I’m so happy,” said Nayanzina as she … yes, you guessed it, dived into the mudslide.

Of course she’s happy; she is only 22 she can still eat ice cream until the cows come home to the creamery.

From Soft Peaks our small gang of five (the tour can take up to 12) headed up from Alexander onto Powell. As we walked, Todd gave a quick hits of Gastown facts before we stopped on Water Street at the soft serve outlet Twisted. Todd said that Twisted, only 3×5 feet, is the tiniest retail space in the province.

“Oh that’s good, different,” said Nayanzina, enjoying a soft serve vanilla cone topped with a healthy drizzle of balsamic reduction.

“When people see there is ice cream coming out of the wall, they get very excited,” said Todd as yes, on cue, tourists began to gather around as we sampled our last treat.

“Thank you, thank you,” said Nayanzina as she gave Todd a big hug and we all said goodbye. “This was the best time ever.”

Cupcakes sweetens its deal

As business owners, Heather White and Lori Joyce have evolved.

Fourteen years ago they opened Cupcakes in Vancouver’s West End and since then their sweet empire has grown to include 10 franchised outlets (Lower Mainland, Victoria and Toronto).

“It’s still fun, it’s a just a different type of fun. We’re not in the stores anymore. We’re working on the business instead of in it,” said White.

The business the pair has been working on is entering the red-hot world of ice cream. Now in Cupcakes shops and coming soon to a natural-product grocery store near you is Betterwith ice cream.

“Our marketing slogan is cupcakes are better with ice cream,” said Joyce, who added it was inevitable that the duo would pair ice cream with their cupcakes. “Since we’ve opened Cupcakes, and I don’t know if it was our concept or the look of our concept, but people always assumed we sold ice cream. Our original store on Denman kind of looked like an ice cream parlour.”

Betterwith is made locally with cream, egg, skim milk powder, organic sugar and flavour.

“It is kind of custard style so it gives it that richness and creaminess,” said Joyce.

The ice cream will come in six flavours: cream, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, strawberry and caramel. You will be able to buy it in pint containers, cones, sundaes and shakes. The bones, by the way, are made from Cupcakes’ own cake batter.

“For Heather and I, it is just about creating something that doesn’t exist in the marketplace and then making it the best,” said Joyce.

“I think in this market particularly people are craving gourmet,” added White. “They want quality. They want good stuff.”

More sweet spots for treats

While the gourmet ice cream tour has the Railtown and Gastown areas covered, we thought we’d reach out to readers and social media followers and find out where they like to go to get their ice cream and gelato. Here’s a quick list of the places people pointed to most often:

Rocky Point, Port Moody

Matte, Port Coquitlam

Marble Slab Creamery, West End

La Casa Gelato, East Vancouver

Earnest Ice Cream, Mount Pleasant

Well, you’re in luck because we’re coming at you with the 11 best ice cream shops in Vancouver that will satisfy your sugar tooth.

So if you’re hanging around (safely) in the Metro Vancouver area – namely Downtown Vancouver, Kitsilano, The Drive , or Steveston – you got to hit up these ice cream shops:

1. Elephant Garden Creamery

elephant garden creamery ice cream flight

Sometimes, it’s absolutely okay to overindulge – especially when it comes to ice cream.

With a MEAN ( like good ) flavour menu lineup like Mango Coconut Sticky Rice, HK Milk Tea, Blueberry Cheesecake, and Vietnamese Coffee, it’s hard picking just 2 for the standard 1 – 2 scoop.

This is why we love Commercial Drive’s Elephant Garden Creamery’s flights (four scoops) since it works wonders if you’re flying solo, on a date or even with the fam jam.

Their ice cream is on the lighter side, but that won’t stop you from thoroughly enjoying the magic that happens with each lick or spoonful.

P.S. Get the Mango Coconut Sticky Rice. It is vegan so hola at your lactose buddies.

What to order: Mango Coconut Sticky Rice, HK Milk Tea, Blueberry Cheesecake, Vietnamese Coffee

2. Earnest Ice Cream

Earnest ice cream cones

Whenever you talk to a Vancouverite about ice cream, one name ALWAYS pops up. Freaken EARNEST.

One, their staff are so darn nice. AND two, their ice cream is SO DARN good.

Like every ice cream shop on the planet, you can sample all the flavours before picking your 2 scoopers (always get 2). Do this. But if you’re basic like us, you’ll just end up getting their signature Whiskey Hazelnut or London Fog every time.

Not cause their seasonal flavours are bad (not even close) or their collaboration ones. Those two flavours just specifically hit us in a different way.

Word of caution : Lines get REALLY long during the summer. So be prepared for that. If you’re semi-allergic to long lines like us and know the flavour you fancy, squeeze past everyone and head straight to the side counter to buy a pint instead.

Not only will you be the envy of everyone in that line, you also get the jar to take home if you somehow (note emphasis) don’t finish the pint in one go. Clean it and use it to grow some green onions or return it to Earnest for a $1 refund.

What to order: Whiskey Hazelnut, London Fog

Address : -3992 Fraser St, Vancouver, BC V5V 4E4 -1829 Quebec St, Vancouver, BC V5T 2Z3 -1485 Frances St, Vancouver, BC V5L 1Z1 -127 W 1st St, North Vancouver, BC V7M 1B1

3. Passione Gelato

Passione Gelato Ice Cream Cone Scoops

When it comes to Passione, you get the vibe of a small neighbourhood gelateria with its tiny storefront in Yaletown , generous portions and the oh-so-friendly & soft-spoken Italian owner (Salvatore Boccoarossa) serving you behind the counter.

But then you add in the expertise and international accolades of Salvatore (graduate of Carpigiani Gelato University and winner of the Grand Title of North America Champions) and the unrelenting focus on only using fresh organic seasonal ingredients…

You get Passione Gelato in its entirety.

Their gelato is rich, creamy, hella aromatic. You’ll find a rotating list of flavours but some fan favourites include Pistachio, Tiramisu, and Sesame. Seasonal flavours like Fresh Mango, Yuzu, Thai Tea and Passion Fruit are also really popular.

Sal’s current favourites? Coconut and Amarena Cherry.

What to order: Pistachio, Tiramisu, Sesame, Fresh Mango, Yuzu, Thai Tea, Passion Fruit, Coconut, Amarena Cherry

Address : 55 Smithe St, Vancouver, BC V6B 0R3 (under Parq Vancouver)

4. Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt

3 frozen yogurt cones timothy's

When it comes to grabbing a frozen treat in Richmond’s Steveston Village , Timothy’s is THE place every Vancouverite will scream for. Although they offer your classic ice cream and gelato, the real star (let’s be honest) is their amazingly fresh real fruit frozen yogurts.

Timothy’s froyos are made-to-order and have been operating since 1989. Choose from a variety of frozen fruits and they’ll blend it up to make the frozen yogurt!

Popular combinations include peach & mango, mixed berries & mango, strawberry & peach, or blackberry & mango.

And for the full Timothy’s experience, make sure you get your froyo in a waffle cone!

It’s 100% worth it for the extra cost since they make the waffle cones inhouse and right in front of your eyes!

Is there anything better than walking around Steveston Wharf with froyo? We think not!

What to order: peach & mango, mixed berries & mango, strawberry & peach, blackberry & mango

Address : 3800 Bayview St, Richmond, BC V7E 5W3

5. La Glace Ice Cream

Ice cream cone in cup La Glace

If you’re feeling a little bit fancy and want to be magically transported to a cafe in Paris, a quaint little shop over in Kitsilano, called La Glace with their premier line of French ice cream will surely hit the spot.

Their award-winning ice cream is made from scratch out of a Creme Anglaise base: basically a thick custard made out of egg yolks and heavy cream.

What you get is a richer and fuller mouthfeel.

On the menu, you’ll find Cofounder Mark Tagulao’s creative spin on common ice cream flavours and an emphasis on seasonal local ingredients.

Like their Matcha Strawberry using BC grown strawberry compote or Lemon Ricotta & Blueberry Sherbet made with Emmalea Farms local blueberries.

Besides just your standard scoop of ice cream, they also have ice cream cakes, flights, pastries and coffee for you to further indulge and spend more time being in awe at their whimsical decor.

Even one of our fav local foodies itsjosheats picked La Glace as one of his favourite summer spots to eat at!

What to order: Matcha Strawberry, Lemon Ricotta & Blueberry Sherbet

6. J Squared Ice Cream

How do tea-based ice cream flavours sound to you? If it sounds amazing, then J Squared Ice Cream is your next stop! So many people talk about its unique flavors that J Squared has made its reputation all over the Lower Mainland.

Highlights must be Oolong Cheesecake, Thai Milk Tea, Matcha Green Tea, Vietnamese Coffee, and Shanghai Fog.

It tastes just exactly how you drink it or even better, and that’s what makes J Squared so special.

Some seasonal flavors like Lychee Mango and Peach Passionfruit are no less stunning, we bet your mouth will water the moment you smell them.

Choose to have waffle cones if you’re eating close by, or pints so you can slowly enjoy them at home.

What to order: Oolong Cheesecake, Thai Milk Tea, Matcha Green Tea, Vietnamese Coffee, Shanghai Fog, Lychee Mango,

Address : 405-9100 Blundell Rd, Richmond, BC V6Y 3X9

7. Rain or Shine

ice cream cone held infront of ice cream background

Cofounder and owners Blair and Josie had one goal in mind when starting up Rain or Shine: create delicious ice cream without all the chemical crap you see in processed food. And that’s exactly what they did.

Now with multiple locations and a truck roaming the city, Rain or Shine has spawned a legion of fans who go wild for their locally and organically sourced ice cream.

Fan favs include London Fog, Blueberry Balsamic, and Cranberry Cheesecake.

And unlike other ice cream shops, they let you get two flavours in one scoop.

That’s a major win for those who are always stuck on choosing which flavour to get!

Pro-tip: They have ice cream taco Tuesdays too!

What to order: London Fog, Blueberry Balsamic, Cranberry Cheesecake

Locations : -3382 Cambie St, Vancouver, BC V5Z 2W5 -1926 W 4th Ave #102, Vancouver, BC V6J 1M6 -6001 University Blvd, Vancouver, BC V6T 0C5 (UBC)

Ice cream cup with smoke

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Mister, a tiny liquid nitrogen ice cream shop located just steps from the Yaletown Canada Line Station.

Unlike regular ice cream, using liquid nitrogen freezes the cream and creates a frozen treat that is denser, smoother, and creamier.

And since each ice cream is made-to-order, it’s a fun sight to see as the gas flows out of the bowls and down the counter – something that entertains both kids and adults!

Like other ice cream shops in Vancouver, Mister has an emphasis on sourcing ingredients from local farmers and suppliers (support local!).

So you’ll find a menu that has seasonal item and ones that are around year-long like Matcha, Creme Brulee and Thai Milk Tea.

But what really makes Mister shine and a league of their own is their willingness to step out-of-bounds and “drop” new unique flavours in ice cream or ice cream sandwich form. Some previous ones include…

  • Jalapeno Honey Chicken Skin Sandos
  • Ritz Cookie Ice Cream
  • Flaming Hot Cheetos Ice Cream Sando
  • Citrus Beet Ice Cream
  • Hong Kong Style Milk Tea Sandwich Between Pineapple Bun

So whether you opt for the gasly spectacle of their liquid nitrogen ice cream or a sando, you’ll be in good hands.

Although there aren’t many seats available, we recommend taking your epic frozen treat on a stroll down Mainland Street or to the waterside.

What to order: Jalapeno Honey Chicken Skin Sandos, Ritz Cookie Ice Cream, Flaming Hot Cheetos Ice Cream Sando, Citrus Beet Ice Cream, Hong Kong Style Milk Tea Sandwich Between Pineapple Bun

Address : 1141 Mainland Street, Vancouver, BC V5V 3N7

9. Nana’s Green Tea

two matcha ice cream soft serve cones

Vancouver is matcha crazy. We’re matcha crazy.

And if you’re looking to satisfy your craving, popular Japanese Matcha brand, Nana’s Green Tea in Kerrisdale will have that deep green tea flavour that will make your heart sing.

Get the Matcha Soft Serve with Shiratama (mochi balls) and you won’t be disappointed. Or if you fancy an ice cream float, try their Matcha Shiratama Float or towering Signature Matcha Parfait with Shiratama.

You can opt to dine-in or grab the soft serve to go on a stroll around the relaxed and carefree Kerrisdale neighbourhood.

What to order: Matcha Soft Serve with Shiratama, Matcha Shiratama Float, Signature Matcha Parfait with Shiratama

Address : 2135 W.41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6M 1Z6

10. Bella Gelateria

ice cream tours vancouver

Bella Gelateria is Vancouver’s favourite place for old-world-inspired gelato, they serve up their award-winning frozen dessert awesomeness with no added colors, flavours, or preservatives.

There are as many flavours as you can ever imagine, and every bite will bring you straight back to Italy.

Don’t hesitate to go for their best-selling item – Akbar Mashti – a version of traditional Persian ice cream made with rosewater, saffron, and garnished with roasted pistachios.

Mild taste and light floral scent thanks to the saffron. Definitely a must-try!

Wickedly Burnt Caramel is also a unique choice to consider, with slow-cooked caramel until it gets dark, creating a slightly smoky, velvety smooth deep flavor that’s rich yet not overly sweet.

Choose to enjoy their gelato in a cone or a cup, Bella Gelateria also serves gelato-based drinks, such as affogato, Hot-Chocolat-O, and traditional Italian milkshakes

What to order: Akbar Mashti, Earl Grey Tea, Salted Caramel, Wickedly Burnt Caramel, Nocciola

If you’re looking for a memorable experience with friends or a partner, La Casa Gelato is the place to visit.

Aside from its iconic pink wall, that is perfect for your Instagram photos, inside you’ll find over 200 flavours to choose from. Yup – over 200 (238 to be exact). In fact, they are a Guinness World Record Holder!

The fun and longlasting memories come from testing some of the ODD and unexpected flavours there. Like Sake, Curry, Durian, Roast Garlic or Maple Bacon and then telling your companions to try it as well.

If you’re an adventurer, you’ll find yourself exploring La Casa Gelato for a good hour before deciding on your scoops.

What to order: Sake, Curry, Durian, Roast Garlic, Maple Bacon

Looking for more food spots? Well, take a look at our picks of the best restaurants in Vancouver!

How We Create Our “Best” Lists

All Noms Magazine’s “best” lists are created using multiple factors and signals to help readers find the best restaurants, things to do, and places to stay at. Some of these factors and signs include personal experiences, correspondence with locals, and compiling experiences from review sites.

Each list is also created to be balanced (in terms of price, cuisine type, ambiance, and more) as possible. This means that the lists are not specifically created in ranking order. You should be comfortable picking from any of the spots on the list and generally have a good time. But of course, YMMV (your mileage may vary) and everyone may have different experiences/palates.

Making the Most of Your Ice Cream Adventure in Vancouver

Embarking on an ice cream adventure in Vancouver is not just about savouring the sweet, creamy delights; it’s about creating joyful memories with your family and embracing the spirit of exploration. Here’s how to ensure every lick and scoop is an unforgettable part of your journey.

Dare to Try Different Flavors

Each ice cream spot in Vancouver has its own signature flavours and specialties. Challenge your family to step out of the comfort zone of vanilla and chocolate to try something new. How about a scoop of Lavender Honey for the parents and a vibrant Blueberry Basil for the kids? Encouraging your little ones to try different flavours not only makes for a fun experience but also subtly teaches them the joy of discovery and openness to new experiences.

Support Local Businesses

When you choose to indulge in a cone or cup from one of Vancouver’s many local ice creameries, you’re doing more than just satisfying your sweet tooth. You’re contributing to the local economy and supporting the dreams of local artisans who pour their hearts into creating these delightful treats. Share with your children the story behind each scoop, helping them understand the value of community support and the hard work that goes into making their favourite ice cream.

Share Your Sweet Discoveries

After you’ve explored the nooks and crannies of Vancouver’s ice cream scene, why not share your favourite finds? Whether it’s a post on social media, a chat with friends, or a comment on our blog, sharing your experiences can inspire other families to embark on their own ice cream adventures. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to connect with the community, exchange tips, and maybe even discover your next favourite flavour based on someone else’s recommendation.

Your ice cream adventure in Vancouver is more than just a series of tasty stops; it’s an opportunity to bond with your family, support the local community, and create stories that you’ll look back on fondly. So, grab those spoons, pick your flavours, and dive into the delicious journey that awaits. And remember, every scoop is a chance to make a memory.

Discovering Vancouver’s Ice Cream Marvels: A Journey Through Flavours and Innovation

Vancouver’s ice cream scene is an evolving tapestry of traditional delights and modern twists, serving up an array of options that cater to every taste bud. From the creamy, classic soft serve to the cutting-edge liquid nitrogen-infused creations, this city is a treasure trove for ice cream enthusiasts. Let’s embark on a flavourful exploration of the best ice cream shops, where natural ingredients, innovation, and passion for good ice cream converge to offer a memorable experience.

A Scoop of Innovation: Liquid Nitrogen and Vegan Delights

The use of liquid nitrogen in ice cream making has introduced a new dimension to Vancouver’s dessert scene, offering a creamy texture and a unique preparation show. Mister Artisan Ice Cream and other top picks in downtown Vancouver have mastered this technique, creating delicious flavours and perfect textures, from Milk Chocolate to London Fog, that leave you craving more.

Vegan options are no longer an afterthought, with shops like La Glace and Earnest Ice Cream offering an array of dairy-free delights. Coconut milk and seasonal fruits combine to create vegan ice cream that doesn’t compromise on taste or texture, featuring flavours like Blueberry Balsamic and Earl Grey.

From Traditional to Trendy: Gelato, Soft Serve, and Beyond

La Casa Gelato is an institution, offering over 200 flavours, from traditional chocolate to avant-garde Whisky Hazelnut, catering to all palates. Dolce Amore and Passione Gelato follow suit, focusing on small batches and the best ingredients sourced from local farmers, ensuring each scoop tells a story of quality and craftsmanship.

Soft Peaks and other soft serve ice cream spots bring a light, airy alternative to the dense, rich textures of traditional ice cream, with unique flavours like Honey Lavender and Oreo Cookies, often served in crunchy waffle cones or as part of delectable ice cream sandwiches.

Beyond the Cone: Ice Cream Sandwiches, Bars, and Unique Flavours

The creativity of Vancouver’s ice cream scene shines in the different ways to enjoy this frozen treat. Elephant Garden Creamery and other shops offer ice cream sandwiches and bars, blending flavours like Coffee Toffee and Peanut Butter with cookie dough or brown butter snickerdoodle, creating a perfect sweet treat for a hot summer day.

Innovation extends to flavours as well, with offerings like Sour Cherry Goat Cheese, Vietnamese Coffee, and London Fog capturing the essence of Vancouver’s diverse culinary landscape. These delicious flavours, combined with friendly staff and great service, make each visit a good time.

Embracing Local: Small Batches and Seasonal Flavours

Emphasizing local ingredients, shops like Rain or Shine and Earnest Ice Cream work closely with local farmers to produce seasonal flavours that reflect Vancouver’s rich agricultural bounty. From False Creek Raspberry to Main Street Honey, these flavours offer a taste of the region in every scoop.

The Social Scoop: Engaging with Community Through Ice Cream

Vancouver’s ice cream shops are not just places to enjoy a scoop; they’re venues for community engagement and innovation. Many have taken to platforms like TikTok to showcase new flavours, vegan options, and behind-the-scenes looks into how they make their ice cream, connecting with a broader audience and inviting them to explore the world of artisan ice cream.

Wrapping Up The Best Ice Cream in Vancouver

As we wrap up our sweet journey through the best ice cream spots in Vancouver, it’s clear that this city offers more than just a treat for the taste buds. It’s a chance to create lasting memories with your family, explore the vibrant local culture, and support the passionate artisans who make Vancouver’s ice cream scene truly special.

From the artisanal wonders of Bella Gelateria to the innovative creations at Made by Mister, each scoop is a testament to the city’s commitment to quality, creativity, and community. And as you wander from one spot to the next, trying out unique flavours and soaking in the scenic beauty, you’re not just enjoying ice cream—you’re experiencing the heart and soul of Vancouver.

Chelsea and I encourage you and your family to embark on this delicious adventure, to discover your own favourite spots and flavours, and to share those sweet moments with others. Vegan-Friendly & Eco-Friendly Hotels in Vancouver

These hotels are in the perfect location to explore Vancouver, have vegan options, and are eco-friendly (You will find most properties have sustainability initiatives; Vancouver is very progressive when it comes to protecting the environment) — hooray!

The Burrard

1100 Burrard St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1Y7, Canada This locally-owned hotel was built in the 1950s as a motor lodge, and when the current owners took it over, they gave it an eco-friendly facelift but kept many of the original details.

It’s located right near Davie Village, Vancouver’s thriving gay neighborhood, and within walking distance of many other neighborhoods and sights. The hotel features EV charging stations (for a fee), free bike rentals, refillable cruelty-free toiletries, and umbrellas (Vancouver does receive a decent amount of rain). You’ll also be able to start your day with an oat milk latte and a slice of vegan banana bread from their onsite café, Elysian.

The Listel Hotel Vancouver

1300 Robson St, Vancouver, BC V6E 1C5, Canada If you’re interested in going on a shopping adventure down Vancouver’s famous Robson Street, this is the perfect place to stay (there are also great shops on Main Street and 4 th Street in Kitsilano)! In addition to shopping, this hotel is also ideal for art lovers. Every room is decorated with limited edition and original artwork — it’s considered Vancouver’s most “art-full” hotel.

On the eco-friendly side, The Listel was awarded the highest eco-rating – 5 Green Keys – by The Hotel Association of Canada. Some of their key initiatives include zero-waste, solar energy, sustainable purchasing programs, and more. I like this hotel for its sustainability initiatives, but its onsite restaurant, Forgae, isn’t really vegan-friendly (hopefully, this changes since the hotel wants to be at the forefront of sustainability). Luckily, there are many options in the neighborhood.

Skwachàys Lodge

31 W Pender St, Vancouver, BC V6B 1R3, Canada This is more than a hotel; it’s a unique Indigenous social enterprise. The Vancouver Native Housing Society opened this property in 2012 to support urban Indigenous artists. Many artists face housing struggles, and their work is commercially exploited.

Through the program, the artists can access affordable housing, artist workshops, and professional and personal development programming opportunities. The guest rooms at the Lodge have been designed in partnership with six indigenous artists to create beautiful artwork — each room is unique and features a glimpse into indigenous culture.

Most of the products used by the hotel are sourced locally and from indigenous-owned companies. One note, there isn’t an onsite restaurant or café.

What to Do & See in Vancouver

Visit granville island public market.

This small peninsula (it’s actually not an island) in False Creek was once a fishing area for the  Musqueam Indian Band and the Squamish people and later became an industrial hub for Vancouver. Today the crowning jewel and what beckons tourists and locals alike (over 10 million people visit it) is the Granville Island Public Market.

Honestly, I thought the market would be overly touristy, and I almost skipped it — I am glad I didn’t. The market is a diverse mix of local artists peddling everything from hand-painted mugs to freshly blown glass vases, baskets of fresh produce, and plenty of food stalls to fill your belly (including vegan options). If you’re hungry, don’t miss the modern vegan Vietnamese cuisine at Chau Veggie Express or handmade chocolates from ChocolaTas. Aside from those two spots, you’ll be pleased that there are many other vendors with vegan options as well.

The fun on Granville Island doesn’t end with the market; you’ll also find art studios, a theatre, and a kid’s center — all worth exploring. The market and surrounding shops are open from 9 AM – 7 PM, seven days a week.

Checkout Vancouver from Grouse Mountain

Year-round this is a gorgeous and fun place to explore and capture terrific views of Vancouver (on a clear day). While it takes a bit of a trek to explore many of British Colombia’s prized mountains, Grouse is only a short 15-minute car ride from downtown Vancouver (you can also get there by bus, but it will take about an hour).

The most popular thing to do on Grouse is to ride the iconic red gondola 4,100 feet above Vancouver for picture-perfect city views and a small taste of British Colombia’s wild beauty. Once at the top, you have access to various activities like hiking (the Grouse Grind is a booty burner!), skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, educational programming, and more.

Not all days are ideal for visiting Grouse. If you want to ensure that you can capture beautiful photos, check out Grouse from Vancouver’s Harbor (right around Canada Place). If you can see the mountain pretty clearly, then you know you’ll be able to see Vancouver and the surrounding area as you go up.

Go on an independent boutique, shopping spree

You probably already know that Robson Street is Vancouver’s most popular shopping destination. For over a mile, the street is lined with many mainstream shops and restaurants, but 9 times out of 10, you will already know these stores and can find them in your own hometowns.

While in Vancouver, I encourage you to check out the many independent shops that sell various products made by Vancouverites in Gastown, Yaletown, Commercial Drive in East Vancouver, and along Main Street in Mount Pleasant. You’ll find quaint bookshops, record stores, vintage clothing, locally created art, and more in these neighborhoods.

Enjoy the views and nature at Stanley Park

Stanley Park is a beautiful green oasis right in the heart of the city — no matter the time of the year, it’s worth a visit! For scenic views, take a stroll along the park’s seawall. From here, you can enjoy Vancouver’s Harbor and imposing mountains. While walking, be sure to pay attention to the water; you might get lucky and catch a harbor seal poking his head out of the water or even a whale! The best time to spot a whale in Vancouver’s waterways is from March to October.

Learn about Indigenous culture and art at Bill Reid Gallery

The City of Vancouver is located on the territories of three indigenous groups — the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh). Today, Vancouver is home to Canada’s third largest indigenous population, and the city, along with locals, is working to ensure that their community and culture are honored.

To learn a little about indigenous culture and art, check out the Bill Reid Gallery right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It’s the only public gallery in Canada that honors contemporary Indigenous Art of the Northwest Coast. Throughout the gallery, you can view various works of art, including music and textiles, and learn about the activist and artist Bill Reid.

If you make it to Whistler, there is also a Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre that showcases cultural and art exhibits on the Squamish & Lil’wat Nation.
