Haine’s is a small, peaceful town that’s becoming a popular stop for cruise ships. The island is home to 2,500 residents, and you won’t need much more than an hour or two to walk the town.

As you approach the town, you’ll quickly notice the incredible scenery. The town is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and a dark blue ocean.

Though Haines, Alaska, is smaller than most of the cruise ports you’ll visit, there’s plenty to see and do.

1. Alaska Indian Arts Gallery

If you consider yourself a history buff or simply appreciate every art piece’s unique story and beauty. In that case, the Alaska Indian Arts Gallery is the perfect place for you to visit.

The non-profit gallery houses a collection of Tlingit artworks and offers daily history lectures.

The gallery is located within Haines’ Fort Seward, originally built in 1904 as a peacekeeping military fort.

At the Alaska Indian Arts Gallery, you’ll learn about the region’s history, culture, and the significance of the Tlingit’s handcrafted art pieces, including silver jewelry, delicate wood carvings, beautiful totem poles, and unique silkscreen prints.

You may even spot a local artisan working on their next masterpiece. But if not, don’t worry. The gallery allows you to create a one-of-a-kind art piece in their interactive workshops or participate in studio demonstrations.

2. Haines Sheldon Museum

Ever wonder what daily life in the Southeastern region of Alaska is like?

The Haines Sheldon Museum, located on Main Street, showcases the social culture, history, and magnificent lifestyles of Chilikate Valley’s Indigenous inhabitants.

The museum features three main exhibits, including the Hakkinen and Children’s Gallery. Guests can explore various collections of artwork, civic documents, photographs, gold mining equipment, and woven Chilkat blankets.

If you are more of a hands-on or proactive person, check out the totem pole carving demonstrations and the interactive activities scattered throughout the museum.

3. SE Alaska State Fair

If you’re visiting Haines during the last week of July, the annual SE Alaska State Fair is a sight to see.

Because of Alaska’s geographic size and sparse population, they have four state fairs throughout the year. Hains is the proud host of the South Eastern Alaska State Fair.

The festival features agricultural exhibits, demonstrations, local cuisine, games, and shopping. 

The fair allows visitors to let loose, have fun, learn something new, or simply explore the town. It’s the year’s highlight, as people from all over Southeastern Alaska visit the small town to let loose.

4. Chilkoot River

Chilkoot River is one of the best locations to view the salmon run. The river is close to the dock, so you can venture out on your own or take a guided tour.

Spanning approximately 20 miles from the Takshanuk Mountains to Lutak Inlet, the Chilkoot river’s vast banks and low bridge allow you to get close to five species of salmon as they make their way upstream to the nearby Chilkoot Lake or Chilkat Lake.

If you visit during June through October, keep an eye out for grizzly bears. Brown bears are a common sight along the river as they look for an easy meal. It’s common to spot a mom with her cubs as she teaches them how to fish and prepares them for life in America’s Last Frontier.

5. Kayak or Canoe on Chilkoot Lake

Named after the Indigenous community that inhabited its surrounding areas, Chilkoot Lake is most well-known for its thrilling and heart-pumping kayaking adventure.

Whether you are looking forward to relaxing on the calm waters or hoping to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, kayaking is the best way to achieve both goals.

After a short ride from the dock, you’ll arrive at the picturesque Chilkoot Lake. 

From there, guides will escort you to the dock, where you will get suited up and ready to board your kayak or canoe.

Once on the water, watch for fast salmon swimming below or animals roaming along the shoreline.

If you get tired of paddling in the canoe, your tour guide will start the engine and take your group on a scenic ride around the lake, stopping at several landmarks and providing history lessons. Unfortunately, there’s no outboard motor in the kayaks.

6. Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark

Some of Alaska’s most remote locations became home to thousands of Gold Rush stampeders who desperately wanted to strike fortune during the 1890s.

But, in the early 1900s, when many gold seekers became disruptive and rowdy, Fort William H. Seward was built to keep the rebellious miners under control. From the fort, troops would prevent miners from committing theft, embezzlement, illegal gambling, and alcohol selling. When the Gold Rush ended, Fort William H. Seward remained open and served as a military training center, recruitment camp, and rest stop during WWI and WWII. 

When you visit this historic landmark in Haines, you’ll discover the remnants of the original barracks and some of the former Officers’ residences. Although the buildings are not accessible to the public, much of the original equipment is preserved to help you envision life during this era.

7. Haines-Skagway Ferry

The 45-minute Haines-Skagway Fast Ferry takes passengers through the scenic Alaskan waterways to nearby Skagway .

But, the ferry is more than just a means of transportation.

On your journey, not only will you travel through the spectacular Lynn Canal’s Taiya Inlet, but you’ll also observe the Long Falls, Sawmill, and Twin waterfalls. 

Naturalist guides will join you along the way, pointing out sightseeing hotspots, sharing stories about the region’s past, answering questions, and providing complimentary beverages.

But, most importantly, be sure to bring your binoculars and cameras as humpback whales, seals, orcas, sea lions, bald eagles, and minke whales have been known to make surprise appearances. So keep your camera at the ready.

8. Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

The American bald eagle symbolizes strength, freedom, and independence. The Founding Fathers chose the bird as the United States of America’s national animal.

The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is the best place to view these incredible birds in their natural habitat.

The preserve encompasses over 49,000 acres. And by some estimates, it holds the world’s largest population of bald eagles.

Upon arrival, you’ll witness first-hand the passion locals have for preserving the lives of thousands of eagles and nurturing the ecosystems they call home.

If traveling to this region between September and February, keep your eyes peeled on the river banks as bald eagles gather more frequently when salmon spawn.

9. The American Bald Eagle Foundation Museum

The American Bald Eagle Foundation Museum was established in 1994 by two locals, Dave Olerud and Hans Fluehler. The Bald Eagle Foundation Museum serves as a historic site that provides visitors with an up close and personal experience with some of Alaska’s most renowned wildlife species.

Guests can explore the history, existence, habitats, and ecosystems that make up the lives of the local wildlife through over 200 dioramas.

Museum personnel offers regular seminars along with interactive and educational opportunities.

The raptor show is arguably the most exciting attraction at the museum. Get up close with twelve avian ambassadors, including eagles, owls, hawks, and falcons. Volunteer trainers provide guests with information on the animals, their habitats, and the rehabilitation goals of the museum.

10. Valley of the Eagles Golf Links

Every amateur or professional golfer knows how vital the fairways and greens are in making the best shot.

At Valley of the Eagles Golf Links, the pure Alaskan landscape offers one of the most memorable rounds of golf you’ll ever play. The course is on wetlands submerging completely underwater during the fall and winter months. And the 9-hole course allows you to observe Haines’ breathtaking mountain views and wildlife species.

With many holes beside the river bank, stay on the lookout for salmon or trout swimming in the stream and local moose and bears.

Valley of the Eagles Golf Links strives to preserve the pristine conditions of the course and its nearby areas. They never use toxic chemicals; instead, they use artificial turf around tees and green spaces.

11. The Hammer Museum

The world as we know it today would not have been made possible without the invention of mankind’s first-ever tool, the universal hammer.

Whether you are a handyman or are fascinated by construction, the Hammer Museum in Haines, Alaska, is sure to amaze every visitor. It’s not a place most people think to visit, but it’s one you can’t miss.

Outside the museum sits the world’s second-tallest hammer, at 20 feet tall.

Since opening in 2002, the Hammer Museum has collected over 7,000 hammers from countries around the world. Some of their most notable hammers are as old as the Ancient Egyptian Era.

Although only 2000 hammers are on display at any given time, the rotating collection showcases a variety of hammers, including those used in manufacturing, dentistry, music, throwing competitions, construction, and more.

The Hammer Museum is open from Monday to Saturday with admission fees of $5.00 for adults and is free for children under 12 years old.

12. Port Chilkoot Distillery

The award-winning Port Chilkoot Distillery in Haines is the perfect stop for beer lovers.

Port Chilkoot Distillery uses locally sourced ingredients, such as pure glacier water, fresh grains, and flavourful herbs. Each uniquely crafted Alaskan gives guests a taste of the great Alaskan character with every sip.

It’s no wonder how the distillery won top honors from the American Crafted Spirits Awards and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, featured in the  Food and Wine Magazine . 

If you prefer other specialty drinks, the Port Chilkoot Distillery also provides a wide variety of tasty beverages, including vodka, rye, bourbon, rum, whiskey, absinthe variants, and cocktails.

13. Haines Borough Public Library

If you are a bookworm looking to immerse yourself in new worlds filled with action, mystery, thrill, fantasy, romance, or literature. In that case, Haines Borough Public Library will become your new favorite getaway.

Initially built in 1928 by the Haines Women’s Club, it holds the honor of being the only library in town.

But that’s not why it’s on our list.

Haines Borough Public Library was named the  Best Small Library in America  and recipient of the Library Journalist award in 2005. 

They boast a collection of over 40,000 books and floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlook the mountain landscape. The library offers something for every curious mind to explore and a sense of comfort or relaxation.

Temporary cards are provided to cruise passengers so visitors can borrow books, use their computers, or access the internet. If you happen to get lost or are curious about your surroundings, the library also offers regional maps so you can locate your next stop or find your way back to the ship.

14. Hike Battery Point Trail

Whether this is your first or 100th time hiking, the Battery Point Trail is an adventure everyone will enjoy.

The trail is accessible by a paved entrance and pebble exit. You’ll explore Haines’ lush greenery, beautiful lookout points, picture-perfect mountains, and incredible ocean views here.

Along your one to two-hour journey, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings as some lucky hikers reported hearing “whale sounds” by the river, spotting eagles in the trees, and even paw prints in the mud.

The Battery Point Trail is one of Alaska’s most family-friendly paths and even welcomes dogs as long as they are leashed. Once you reach the end, you’ll be rewarded with a gorgeous beach where you can go for a quick swim, have a beachside picnic, or start a small, containable campfire.

You may also want to keep your binoculars handy as you may see marine animals in the distance. 

15. Saint James Bay State Marine Park

Located roughly 45 miles from Haines, Saint James Bay State Marine Park is known for its heart-racing, exciting, and memorable recreational activities.

You can spend the day boating, hunting, kayaking, berry picking, hiking, and bird or wildlife watching. But, as the marine park encompasses over 1000 acres of land between the Chilkat Peninsula and Lynn Canal surrounding St. James Bay, you will find some of the best fishing spots Haines offers.

Keep in mind, however, that inclement weather often settles in quickly and without much warning, so be sure to stay close to land and pack extra layers and waterproof shoes or jackets.

17. The Bamboo Room and Pioneer Bar

If you’re looking for some delicious tasting home-cooked meals, the Bamboo Room and Pioneer Bar is the place to visit. 

It was established in 1953 by Marty and Helen Tenges, and Fran Fox. The Bamboo Room and Pioneer Bar feature over 95 menu items ranging from breakfast delights to exquisite dinner choices.

Although famous for its halibut fish and chips dish, the Bamboo Room and Pioneer Bar is also known for their eggs benedict sandwich, biscuits and gravy, and breakfast burritos.

Everyday lunch favorites include Bob’s homemade chili and a variety of wraps, salads, and sandwiches. The dinner menu is primarily seafood specials featuring crab, salmon, and halibut dishes.

You’ll also find a beer selection from the nearby Alaskan or Haines Brewing Company at the restaurant. 

18. Haines Brewing Company

Haines Brewing Company has been the vision of Paul Wheeler and Jeanne Kitayama for many years. The two began brewing beer in their homes before opening a brewery. 

Their love of beer dates back to when friends and family would sip Paul’s handcrafted brews in their home’s kitchen.

The brewery was established in 1999 and is located on Haines’ Main Street. They pride themselves on serving completely unfiltered, unpasteurized, authentic, and custom-made beers.

Each beer represents a refreshing taste and a unique name to match. You’ll find beers like Big Hammer, Captain Cook’s Spruce Tip Ale, Elder Rock Red, ‘The Devil Made Me Do It, and the Buster Board Lager.

The cruise dock in Haines is right in front of the historical centre of Haines. Just a few blocks up the small hills is where you find the parade grounds and the heart of Fort William H. Seward. Downtown Haines is about half a mile to the right hand side coming off the dock.

Shuttle service

Haines is easy to navigate by foot, but the town of Haines also offers a shuttle service. It can bring you all over town. They have stops at the Cruise dock, Fort William H. Seward Historic District, Eagle Foundation, Visitors centre, Downtown and Dalton City Brewery.

Bicycle and scooter rental

Coming off the pier you will see a bicycle rental facility to your right hand side. A little further up the road is where you will also find scooter rentals.

Fast Ferry Passenger Service

From Haines you can reach Skagway by ferry. This takes about 45 minutes. Please note the ferry goes +/- every 2 hours and capacity is limited. Buy your ticket online through www.hainesskagwayfastferry.com or on board. The ferry pier is right next to the cruise ship dock. See its exact location marked on the map.

Shore Excursions

Haines is an amazing town and known for its wildlife and adventure. We do recommend to book a tour on the ship or to pre-arrange an excursion before your cruise starts to be sure you are making the most of your day. Tour options offered on shore side are very limited.

You will find a couple of cafe’s in downtown have free wi-fi. Most restaurants near the pier and in the historical centre have paid wi-fi hotspots. Like Fireweed Restaurant and Fort Seward Lodge. These cafes are a 3 minute walk from the cruise dock.

There are many hikes you could do in Haines that can take you to breathtaking viewpoints and incredible landscapes. Walk to the Portage Cove Wayside or Battery Point for example. Always make sure to pass by the Visitors Centre on the dock for the last update on the trail and a hiking map.

Hiking trails

In Alaska you can find all five species of Alaska’s Pacific Salmon. They are King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink and Chum. Every year from August to October you will find the salmon find the very stream they were born to spawn and die. It is a phenomenal event that you cannot miss if your cruise is arriving in August or September.

This non-profit organisation is dedicated to preserve the local art and culture. Visit their gallery of Alaskan art or see one of the many totem poles in town that have been created by them. The Alaska Indian Arts building is a 5 minute walk from the dock.

Visit the museum to see the beautiful collection of Chilkat weavings and exhibition of pioneer history. The Sheldon museum is a 10 minute walk from the dock. You can also catch the local shuttle service to it.

When you walk off the pier, take a look to the right hand side. About 1 block from the dock you will spot this building where you will be able to find bicycle and motor/scooter rental.

Sailing into Haines is an experience you cannot miss. Your ship will be sailing in one of the largest fjords of North America. Be surrounded by the snowy mountain tops, bald eagles and glaciers in the far distance. Make sure to be on the outside deck 1 hour before arrival and for about 1 hour after departure.

The town’s old bakery has now been transformed into the Port Chilkoot Distillery. Visit it for a great tasting of fine spirits and whiskey. Especially their gin comes well recommended.

Find a new respect for hammers. This small museum has over 2000 hammers from all over the world on display. This museum is about 10 minute walk from the dock. The local shuttle bus also makes a stop here.

Haines, Alaska is definitely a small town… unless you count the bald eagle population! There’s a good argument for counting the flying folks — the town’s actually home to a nature preserve for the species, plus it’s the HQ of the American Bald Eagle Foundation. But there’s more to Haines than majestic feathered creatures, plus spawning salmon and grizzly bears — there’s history in this former army post that was sold to a group of veterans in the 1940s. You’ll see it in the galleries and museums, including one that’s very, very dedicated to hammers, boasting 2,000 different ones. But don’t miss the local flavor, as the downtown foodie scene is packed with places for a bite, and perhaps a freshly-brewed sip or two.

Nestled amidst picturesque mountains and stunning coastal scenery, Haines offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and cultural treasures. Located in the Alasakan Panhandle, this picturesque village of approximately 2000 people is ideally situated between the Chilkoot Inlet and Chilkat River, making it a hotspot for summer outdoor recreation.

Because of its proximity to natural resources, the Tlingit people settled in Haines thousands of years ago, and was first explored by Russian and Spanish explorers in the mid-1700's.

Haines was also part of Alaska's gold rush in the 1890's and gold is still mined today in the Chilkat Valley. In fact, the television show Gold Rush Alaska, aired on the Discovery Channel is filmed here.

Port Haines cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Haines, Alaska. Haines AK is a port town in Alaska's Haines Borough, located in state's northern part and close to Glacier Bay Park . The town has total area approx 56 km2 (22 ml2) and population around 2,500. Many tourists arrive for the annual bald eagles watching in the Chilkat Preserve. Every year, in the period October through February, the town boasts world's largest concentration of these mighty birds.

The town and its surrounding area are very popular for outdoor recreation activities. Hiking in Takshanuk Mountains and rafting on Chilkat River are among the most popular. Haines is also popular for heli-skiing. Popular destinations include Davidson Glacier (for hiking) and Chilkoot Lake and Lutak Inlet (for fishing). Lutak is frequented by seals, sea lions, orca whales.

Fort William Seward (aka Port Chilkoot) is within town's limits and is designated as National Historic Landmark. It features officer housing, barracks, parade grounds. Some of these structures function as restaurants and businesses. Alaska Indian Arts Centre offers demonstrations by traditional craftsmen. Town's history and local Tlingit traditions are featured in Sheldon Museum. Hammer Museum is themed on hammer's history. Tsirku Canning Company Museum is themed on the historic salmon canneries.

The town hosts the annual Southeast Alaskan State Fair (held in July). Other tourist attraction is the portion of the set from Disney's "White Fang" movie (1990) filmed here. The surviving set includes small structures common to an Alaskan mining town.

Many tourists also visit Haines on cruise ships, mainly from the Alaskan fleets of Holland America and Princess Cruises . Since 2009, cruise ship visiting frequency is nearly 20 per year. The cruise berth (terminal) is located close to Fort William.

The  Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center  is well worth a visit. It's committed to collecting, preserving and interpreting the history, art and unique blending of diverse cultures within the Chilkat Valley region, providing a nice cultural overview of the area.   Alaska Indian Arts  is dedicated to preserving and supporting traditional Native craft and the culture of the region's Native tribes. Not to be missed: the Hammer Museum , which interprets history through the creation and use of the hammer. Really. It's fascinating. 

Fort William H. Seward  was the last of a series of 11 military posts established in Alaska during the gold-rush era, and was Alaska's only military facility between 1925 and 1940. A number of barracks, officer housing and parade grounds are maintained here. Some of these structures are open to the public as businesses and restaurants.

Birds, bears & fish

Haines is famous for its bald eagles, which can be seen across the region but particularly at the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve , 48,000 acres of river bottom land created by the Chilkat, Kleheni and Tsirku rivers. In summer, there are 200 to 400 eagles here; between October and February, that number rises to more than 3,000. Passengers can also learn about America's national bird at the American Bald Eagle Foundation Natural History Museum , and meet the rescued inhabitants such as Keene, a bald eagle; Sitka, a red-tail hawk; Zilla, a falcon; and Hans, an eagle owl.  

Take a boat ride or kayak out on Chilkoot Lake and you may see some of Alaska's famous bears roaming the shores in search of their next meal. Bears or not, the scenery alone is worth the trip. Take a boat out pretty much anywhere and, like the bears, you can try to catch your next meal in the salmon-rich waters all around Haines. 

Haines has a selection of gift and souvenir shops, and some of the museums have gift shops as well. Haines also has authentic Native artwork. One place to find high quality work is Alaska Indian Arts. Signed, numbered silkscreen prints are hand drawn and cut and printed by a master printmaker. The gallery also carries fine silver jewelry by a local artist whose studio is in the building. 

YOLO (You only live once!)

Book a flightseeing tour in an airplane over Davidson Glacier or even Glacier National Park. Photos won't come close to the experience but that's no reason not to take them. 

Don’t miss

Kroschel Alaska Animal Kingdom, 28 miles north of Haines, is where a photographer-filmmaker and his son introduce visitors to rescued and orphaned Alaska wildlife. Those in residence might include Arctic fox, lynx, bears, reindeer, moose, wolverines, mink and more. This is definitely a photo op and an experience not to be missed.

Best bets for dining

Haines is low-key and casual. This isn't the place for fine dining but it is the place for a fine Alaskan meal. Fort Seward Lodge  is a restaurant and saloon featuring simple dishes along with a lively bar scene. At  The Bamboo Room  & Pioneer Bar  , locals and visitors tuck into all-American breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant specializes in seafood and is known for its halibut fish & chips, but the menu also includes house-made chili and soups made daily.  

• Haines and Skagway are 14 miles apart by water; 350 miles by road, which is the Golden Circle Route.
• The Disney movie "White Fang" was filmed entirely in Haines in 1991. 
• Eagles can fly 30 mph and dive up to 100 mph. They are also the original eagle eyes, able to spot a fish from a mile away.
• Haines is home to the Discover Channel's hit show "Gold Rush Alaska."

Docking information.

Large cruise ships dock in Haines at  the Port Chilkoot Dock in front of Fort William H. Seward. Small ships may dock nearby at the ferry dock. From either it's a short walk to the downtown area. 

Getting around 

Many folks visiting Haines opt to rent a car to explore the sights. Some, however, choose to rent bikes instead, conveniently available at Sockeye Cycle near the cruise dock. There are taxis in very limited quantity so it's best to arrange for one in advance. 

There are several water passage/water taxi options between Haines and Skagway . The trip takes about 1 hour 15 minutes and the captain usually stops for wildlife sightings on the way.

Raft down the gently flowing Chilkat River through a bald eagle preserve known for its virgin wilderness and abundant wildlife. To reach the launch site, you will travel along a stretch of road so beautiful that it has been designated a National Scenic Highway. You will then board an 18-foot raft with a naturalist guide and begin slowly floating down the river, which the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve borders. The waters are teeming with salmon that come to spawn, and their sheer numbers provide an endless supply of food for the eagles. You will have a front-row seat to observe this annual rite of nature, which ensures a healthy and abundant eagle population. Interact with some of Alaska’s most iconic animals at the Kroschel Wildlife Center, a wilderness reserve for orphaned and injured creatures. The drive there will set the stage for this hands-on experience as you will travel through the Chilkat Mountains, a forested area where many of the animals were rescued. As an introduction, Steve Kroschel will describe how he founded his namesake reserve and demonstrate how the caretakers work with the rescued animals to assist in their recovery. Haines Adventure Hike

Haines Bike, Hike & Brew

Wilderness Kayak Experience

Spend hours peacefully kayaking around Chilkoot Lake, observing the unspoiled vistas and abundant wildlife. As you approach the lake, views of the pristine Alaskan landscape will be magnificent and include dark-green Sitka tree forests and craggy mountain peaks. Glacial Fjord By Bicycle

You will begin at Lutak Inlet and follow a paved road about five miles into the wilds of the Haines State Forest. The road is relatively flat with little traffic, which makes for a leisurely ride. Last Frontier UTV Adventure

Tear through the Alaskan wilderness on a side-by-side UTV and stop on occasion to take in the spectacular panoramas. You will get a feel for nature’s majesty as you will drive to the starting point by following a gorgeous National Scenic Byway that passes through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Reserve. You will then hop on either a Kawasaki or Arctic Cat UTV that holds two or four people and race off into some of the most beautiful countryside in Alaska. The UTVs have automatic transmissions and drive much like cars, so most anyone will be comfortable taking the wheel if you decide to switch drivers. You will travel along 12 miles of gravel road, past beaver ponds, over Little Salmon Creek and through remote forests and meadowlands. Be sure to look for swans, eagles and moose along the way. Haines, Whales And Lighthouse Tales

Cruise one of the world’s longest and deepest fjords in a catamaran while observing some of the most iconic wildlife in Alaska. The Fjordland is a twin-hulled, 65-foot catamaran that is ideal for sightseeing, especially with its large windows and high speed, so time isn’t wasted between viewing opportunities. Although you will see superlative attractions such as the oldest lighthouse in Alaska and gorgeous scenery such as glacier-fed Sawmill Falls, the largest waterfall on Lynn Canal, wildlife is the ultimate attraction. It all probability, you will observe enormous humpback whales breaching the water’s surface and small pods of orcas that are usually made up of family members. Most cruise ships pull up to the Port Chilkoot dock at the foot of historic Fort Seward, a few blocks south of the town center. Some smaller cruise ships dock at the Fast Ferry dock, a block south of the Port Chilkoot dock.

Both docks are within (up hill)walking distance of most of the town's main attractions.

On those rare occasions when more than one ship is in port, passengers may be tendered to the dock in smaller craft.

During cruise ship dockings, there is a Shuttle Bus service that runs every 30 minutes. It starts at the Port Chilkoot Dock, and makes a loop to the Sheldon Museum, Visitor Center, Library, Dalton City, Eagle Foundation, Fort Seward Historic District, and then back to the Dock.

Sightseeing:

Haines is situated on a spit of land on the west side of the Lynn Canal along one of the deepest fjords in the Inside Passage. It is one of only three ports in southeast Alaska with access to Alaskan roads. As a result, Haines is a busy place in the summer. Many vacationers (and their vehicles) ride a ferry to Haines and head up the Haines Highway to the USA Highway into northwestern Canada and the usan interior. Other visitors arrive by cruise ship. In warm-weather months, the town's population swells considerably.

A haven for bald eagles and artists, Haines is distinctive, with the officers' quarters of historic Fort William H. Seward nestled around a parade ground and the snowy 6,500-ft/2,015-m Cathedral Peaks towering in the background. The first permanent army post in USA, the fort now houses hotels, restaurants, art galleries, USA Indian Arts and the Chilkat Center.

Each fall, more than 3,500 eagles flock to the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve on the Chilkat River to feast on a late run of salmon. Several hundred remain in the area throughout the year.

Established as a result of a border dispute with Canada, Fort William H. Seward was named after the man who negotiated the purchase of USA from the Russians. Due to the confusion in the post office caused by the city of Seward also honoring the man, the Fort was renamed Chilkoot Barracks in 1922. The original name was resumed when the Fort was declared an Historic Landmark in 1972. Decommissioned in 1947, five former veterans purchased the Fort with plans to make it an arts and crafts area of the community.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Popular shore excursions include tours of the town and surrounding sights by van or bicycle, river-rafting through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, kayaking in the area fjords (Lutak and Taiya inlets), hiking in the usan rain forest and flight seeing trips to nearby glaciers. Charter boats offer saltwater fishing, and several outfits guide hunting trips.

For golf enthusiasts, Weeping Trout Sports Resort offers nine-hole golfing in a remote setting on Chilkat Lake (a 26-mi/42-km trip by car and boat). There's also fly-in fishing.

If you are going to be there in August or September, there might be an opportunity to see brown bears fishing for salmon on the Chilkoot River. The real action on this river only starts when the cruise season is over.

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

• Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
• Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
• Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
• Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
• Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
• Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
• Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
• Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
• Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Haines, Alaska Cruise Port Overview

Haines could be considered either the beginning or the end, depending on your perspective. Situated on the northern part of North America’s longest fjord, Haines is where the Inside Passage meets the Alaska Highway.

The glacier-formed terrain is surrounded by peaks and water, and the Takinsha Mountains and Chilkat Range tower above town, the Takshanuk Mountains rise to the north, and the Coast Mountains stand east across Lynn Canal.

The Tlingit Indians who originally inhabited the area named it Dei Shu, meaning “end of the trail”; but for some westerners, Haines marked a new start. In 1878, it became a hub for the North West Trading Company, and in 1881, with the establishment of a mission, the town was named for Francina Electra Haines of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. 

Haines also served as a supply port with the discovery of gold in 1899 and as the home of a U.S. Army base (1904-1946), but its economic mainstays have been fishing, timbering, and tourism.

Today, the town on the northern end of the Alexander Archipelago is home to fewer than 2,000 people year-round, but some mighty big adventures. 

Every October through February, the Haines population swells, as thousands of bald eagles flock to the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The convocations of birds are drawn to a roughly 5-mile stretch of the Chilkat River, where spawned-out salmon in unfrozen sections of water makes for the perfect cold-weather meal. In November, the city hosts the Alaska Bald Eagle Festival to celebrate its annual visitors.

Haines visitors arriving by cruise ship will also find an abundance of food options. The Commander’s Room Restaurant and Officers’ Club Lounge serves upscale entrees including fish, lamb, rabbit, and beef.

The Chilkat Bakery and Restaurant offers homestyle breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as Thai cuisine on Thursdays. Wood-fired pizzas and gourmet salads are available at Alpenglow Restaurant. 

Haines’ eclectic food scene carries over to a vibrant arts community that includes writers, photographers, and painters. Watch totems being carved at the Alaska Indian Arts, Inc; peruse galleries such as Art on Main Street, Catotti, Goldberg Art Studio and Fair Winds Gallery; and learn more about the area at the Haines Sheldon Museum & Cultural Center, which has more than 4,000 artifacts ranging from Chilkat blankets to the Eldred Rock lighthouse lens.

15 Alaska cruise mistakes you never want to make

For many, an Alaska cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You don't want to screw it up because you might not get the chance for a do-over. Unfortunately, it's easier than you think to make Alaska cruise mistakes that can ruin a trip or prevent you from experiencing Alaska to the fullest.

While cruises to the Last Frontier are not polar-cruise-level adventures, they require more careful planning than for a Mexico or Caribbean sailing. You need to get all the details right, from booking the cruise and packing your bags to what to do and see during your cruise.

Here's a list of things you should never do on an Alaska cruise. Avoid these Alaska cruise mistakes, and you'll be on your way to a smooth sailing.

Alaska cruise planning mistakes to avoid

No matter how many times you've cruised before, you might be shocked at how much planning you need to do for an Alaska sailing. Get these things wrong, and you might miss out on your big Alaska cruise experience.

Assume all Alaska cruises are the same

This is an easy mistake to make on your first Alaska cruise. However, matching your ship and itinerary to your expectations and travel style is crucial for a successful trip.

Are you looking for a full day of glacier time? Try a midseason sailing that visits Glacier Bay National Park . Early and late-season cruises might be unable to access the glaciers on their itineraries due to ice floes.

Want to see whales? A round-trip Alaska cruise in June is ideal. Do you want to fish for salmon? You'll want to book at the peak of the salmon fishing season, from mid-June to mid-August. Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world, and while most cruises stop there, a few don't, so make sure it's on the itinerary if you wish to fish.

Are you taking kids on your Alaska cruise? Big ships often have more for kids to do on board, which might be more important than where the ship goes. Expedition-style cruises may have less for youngsters but appeal to independent teens. These voyages offer a more intimate and close-up Alaska experience, with outings on kayaks and Zodiac boats that launch directly from the ship.

Wait to book excursions

You don't have to worry about booking tours in advance in some cruise destinations. Alaska cruises are not like that.

Alaska shore excursions fill up fast. It's worse in midsummer, but even on shoulder season sailings, you may not find space on the excursions you hoped to do if you wait until you're on the ship to book. The only solution is to sign up for tours as early as possible.

Does this mean you shouldn't take advantage of last-minute Alaska cruise deals if you find them? Of course not. Snap those babies up — just come prepared with a list of second and third choices of excursions, just in case.

Overlook independent excursions

You don't have to stick with ship-sponsored shore excursions in every port in Alaska. On my last Alaska cruise, we booked kayaking independently for our stop in Ketchikan. It was one of the best experiences of the entire cruise. The company picked us up and dropped us off at the cruise ship. We were guaranteed an on-time return to the ship and paid far less than for the ship's kayaking excursions.

If you want to check out independent tours , you can find several Alaska excursion aggregators online or deal directly with independent businesses. Make sure you inquire about tour timing and leave a buffer so you won't miss your ship even if there's traffic or a delay.

Book same-day flights on embarkation day or early flights home

You don't want to find yourself stuck in an airport because of a flight delay when you should be boarding your cruise. To avoid this problem, book your flights to arrive the day before your cruise departs rather than the same day.

If you think it can't happen to you, listen to my most recent flight horror story. I was on not one but two flights on the same day, where minor mechanical problems caused deplaning and two-hour delays. I should have landed at my destination at 11:30 a.m. but didn't arrive until after 5 p.m. Had that been embarkation day, my ship would have sailed without me.

Similarly, it's always best to book departing flights home for the afternoon in case the ship is delayed returning to port or is not cleared by authorities on time. If you're flying in or out of Anchorage, know that all transportation options include several hours of travel from the ports of Seward and Whittier; you might consider overnighting in Anchorage either pre- or post-cruise to play it safe.

Skip the travel insurance

Airline issues aside, Alaska can be a wee bit hazardous. You will encounter slippery slopes and rocky roads — and that's just walking through Alaska port towns. You might be participating in more daring activities than normal, such as flying in helicopters, hiking across glaciers, kayaking icy waters or zip lining through forests. It's easy for something to go wrong.

On my last Alaska cruise, I heard about two passenger emergencies. A kid broke an arm on the ship and needed surgery, so a family of five disembarked in Ketchikan — not exactly a cheap end to their vacation, I'm guessing. Later in the sailing, a sick passenger was airlifted directly off the ship by the Canadian Coast Guard before we made it to Victoria.

If you live in the U.S., your health insurance is most likely valid in Alaska. You'll be covered for medical expenses but not the other expenses associated with any injury that interrupts your cruise. Travel insurance is the way to go unless you want to pay for flight changes and medical evacuation out of pocket.

Alaska cruise packing mistakes to avoid

Packing for an Alaska cruise can be tricky. The region's unpredictable weather means it can be rainy and 50 degrees one day, then sunny and 85 degrees the next. Mix in boat rides and glacier watching from the ship at 6 a.m., and you have a complicated packing job ahead of you. Don't make these Alaska cruise packing mistakes.

Forget your rain gear

Rule No. 1 on Alaska cruises: Pack rain gear. It might not rain one drop on your cruise, but chances are good that the weather will be wet at some point on your trip. When it does, you'll want the right gear to stay dry and not be drippy and miserable.

Waterproof shoes or boots are a must. For extra protection, spray them with a water-repellant sealer before you pack. You can stow lightweight raincoats or ponchos and pull-on rain pants in your backpack during excursions when you don't need them.

Skimp on layers

Layers are the only way to dress on an Alaska cruise. Start with thin, base-layer undergarments that won't bulk up your clothes and are comfortable even if the day turns out warmer than expected. The final layers of outerwear should be lightweight because you may need to stuff them in your backpack for half the day as the temperature rises.

I especially like puffy vests and jackets for Alaska. You can shed the jacket as temperatures allow, then lose the vest if it gets even warmer. Top everything with caps, knit hats, earmuffs and gloves. Those things might be excessive for a stroll through town but important in the wind on a whale watching boat.

Overpack on eveningwear

The dress code on most Alaska cruises is more relaxed than in other cruise destinations. Days are long and outdoorsy, leaving people less enthusiastic about rushing back to the ship to put on fancy clothes and dress shoes.

Trade out your hiking shoes for comfy flats or dress sneakers. Jazz up casual, neutral-colored slacks (even jeans) or skirts with jackets or scarves. You can leave the formalwear and high heels at home.

Cheap out on insect repellant

Mosquitoes in Alaska aren't always a nuisance, but they can be horrendous. Pack insect repellant and full-coverage clothing as though you were planning to visit a rainforest ... because you are.

If you don't plan on checking a bag, pick up bug spray in your departure city or first port of call.

Leave the binoculars and cameras at home

One question I get asked often is whether you can see whales and other wildlife from the ship. The answer is a resounding yes. Unfortunately, much of what you will see is from a distance.

You can solve that problem with a pair of lightweight binoculars. They're also useful for getting a close-up view of glaciers or spotting eagles in port. Consider bringing a pair for everyone in your group because you don't want to fight over one pair when a pod of whales comes into view.

As for cameras, I recommend that everyone in your travel group has a water-resistant camera or a waterproof smartphone case or pouch. I lean toward cameras rather than phones for two reasons. One, most cameras dropped into the depths of an Alaskan bay pose a less traumatic loss than most smartphones. My second reason is in the next section.

Mistakes to avoid during your Alaska cruise

Once you're on board your ship, it's time to put all the stress of planning and packing behind you. You've made it, and you don't want to let anything get in the way of enjoying your cruise.

Stare at your phone too much

An Alaska cruise is the ideal time to hit pause on your digital life. Sure, you want to capture the amazing scenery, but you know what? Few of the pictures you take will accurately portray the scale of the beauty of Alaska.

The photos you'll enjoy most when you look back next year are the ones of your travel partners enjoying the trip. Take those, then spend your time soaking up the enchantment of this place. The news, the email correspondence and your Instagram followers can take a back seat until you're back home.

Assume the seas will be smooth

Don't be surprised if you feel seasick in Alaska's waters, even if no other cruise has made you feel that way. Cruising through the Inside Passage is generally calm, but the open waters of the Pacific Ocean can be choppy. Even the bays can churn up quickly during summer storms.

Ships also do a lot of maneuvering, including turning complete circles designed to give everyone on board access to the amazing views. Unfortunately, those tight turns can contribute to nausea for some people.

Prepare by packing motion sickness relief bands you place on pressure points on your wrists, prescription scopolamine transdermal patches, ginger candies, over-the-counter seasickness medications and herbal motion sickness patches. I've used these for years, with only one failure on a rather small ship.

You can also treat the woozies with seasickness tablets, which are often available free at the medical center or guest services, green apples from the buffet and ginger ale from your ship's friendly bartenders. Related: How to avoid seasickness on your next cruise

Spend all your time indoors

You packed all those clothing layers — now's the time to use them. The coldest part of your Alaska cruise will likely be while the ship cruises through can't-miss scenery. Don't wimp out in an observation lounge. Bundle up and head outside to fully take in the view. Your balcony may give you an edge over the folks in interior rooms, but you won't get a 360-degree vista unless you're out on the top deck.

The best souvenir advice I've received is to buy a cozy throw or blanket at your first port stop. It won't cost a fortune and will serve a purpose for the rest of the cruise. Picture yourself cozy and warm in your fuzzy Alaska souvenir blanket, sipping hot chocolate while watching glaciers calving. Once home, you'll remember your epic vacation every time you snuggle up on the couch.

Sleep through your vacation

This is not a cruise you want to sleep through — and even if that's your plan, you may have difficulty accomplishing it. Long hours of daylight, excursions and glacier viewings that start early and even your own fear of missing out can have you out of bed early and staying up later than you might on any other cruise.

Sleep apps and eye masks may help with the daylight situation. I also find that Alaska cruises are ideal for ordering room service meals. It definitely saves time before morning excursions and can provide a bit of downtime in your cabin for lunch or dinner on occasion.

Fail to try something new

Your Alaska cruise offers many opportunities to try things you might never have the chance to do again. You could walk on glaciers, snorkel in a dry suit in the frigid Alaska waters or play with sled dog puppies. Or, how about riding in a sled pulled by sled dogs? We already mentioned salmon fishing, which is surprisingly fun, even if you'd never go fishing at home.

The array of things to try in Alaska can be as tame or as adventurous as you want — it's the joy of discovery that's key. I once kayaked in Ketchikan with a woman on her first solo cruise in Alaska. She'd never kayaked before. When our marine biologist guide pulled a sea cucumber from the crystal-clear waters to show us, she squealed with delight when he offered to let her hold it. That's the kind of joy you cruise to Alaska to experience.

You can avoid the most common Alaska cruise mistakes with a little extra planning.

The goal is to have the Alaska cruise experience you and your travel companions long for. Take notice of the historic false-front shops reminiscent of the gold rush days as you explore. Many of these buildings are part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, and you may even see people strolling down the streets dressed in period costumes.

White Pass & Yukon Route

One of the top-rated attractions in Skagway is the White Pass Summit Scenic Railroad journey through Alaska's wilderness. The narrow-gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark – an honor shared by the Panama Canal, the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Dating back 125 years, the historic railway features vintage rail cars and climbs to a steep 2,865 feet at the summit over just 20.4 miles. Along the way to the summit – located at the official international border between the U.S. and Canada – you'll listen to the history of the Klondike Gold Rush while passing by Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and Bridal Veil Falls. Royal Caribbean International's three-hour jet boat cruise on Sitka Sound features panoramic scenery (including snow-capped peaks) and the chance to see abundant wildlife. During the tour, look for playful sea otters, whales and brown bears walking along the coast. The line also offers another tour – Sea Otters, Raptors and Bears Oh My – that features a naturalist-guided catamaran cruise followed by visits to the Alaskan Raptor Center (a rehabilitation center for birds of prey) and the Fortress of the Bear (a rescue operation for orphaned bears).

In comparison, Carnival Cruise Line 's VIP wildlife quest in search of whales, sea otters, coastal brown bears and more concludes with a feast of wild salmon cooked over a wood-fired grill, Alaska crab and prime rib at the Fin Island Lodge. Whale Watching & Bear Search

The waters surrounding Icy Strait Point host the largest summer population of humpback whales in the state, especially around the Point Adolphus area. If you purchase a tour directly with the Icy Strait Point website, they'll even guarantee you'll see whales – or they'll refund your money. During the tour, look for orcas, Steller sea lions, porpoises and seals. But be sure to also gaze overhead for bald eagles and search along the shore for bears; the Spasski River Valley in the remote wilderness of Chichagof Island has one of the highest densities of coastal brown bears in the world. Some cruise lines offer a variation of this excursion that includes a boiled seafood feast back on shore at Icy Strait Point.

Thrill-seekers (who love heights) will jump at the chance to ride the world's largest and longest zip line, which sits more than 1,300 feet above sea level at the top of Icy Strait Point. The ride to the summit on the SkyGlider mountaintop gondola is also a rush, but the real excitement comes as you zoom down 5,330-foot zip lines with five other riders at 60 mph – with views of the forest below and Glacier Bay National Park in the distance. A break-activated landing on the beach brings riders safely back to the ground. The price also includes unlimited rides on the gondola.

Its breathtaking natural beauty – with mountains on one side and Resurrection Bay on the other – has been shaped by glaciers over thousands of years. Top attractions in Seward include the Alaska SeaLife Center and a charming downtown area. It also offers access to Kenai Fjords National Park.

Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise

During your stop in Seward, take a full-day excursion to see the astounding beauty of Kenai Fjords National Park. The impressive fjords are surrounded by mountains standing more than 6,000 feet tall and an ecosystem rich in wildlife. While there, watch for a variety of whale species, sea otters, porpoises and sea lions, and onshore, you might see bears and mountain goats. There are also 191 documented species of birds in the park and many glaciers. As you get up close to Holgate Glacier, listen as chunks of blue ice calve into the water.

Haines, a small port about 20 miles north of Skagway, is best known for its Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. The 49,000-acre preserve has the largest natural gathering of eagles during the late salmon runs and boasts pristine forests, marshlands and rivers brimming with wildlife.

Glacier Point Wilderness Safari

Norwegian Cruise Line's five-hour excursion takes guests on an adventure into the wilderness by boat while cruising North America's deepest and longest fjord, the upper Lynn Canal. You might even see breaching whales and playful sea lions en route to Glacier Point, where you'll disembark at the beach upon arrival. After a drive through the forest and a hike in the woods, you'll have unforgettable, up-close views of the Davidson Glacier by canoe.

Don't be surprised to see brown bears or 1,600-pound moose coming to feast along the riverbank during your rafting adventure.

Alaska is home to more than 30,000 grizzlies, but the state’s cruise industry is experiencing anything but a bear market as momentum of last year’s record-breaking season is expected to continue in 2024.

The most-visited Alaskan port, Juneau set a new mark a year ago with 1.65 million passengers descending on the capital city during cruise season, which generally runs from April to late October. That figure from the Juneau Chamber of Commerce is a Denali-sized jump of 30 percent compared to pre-pandemic 2019.

Coinciding with Alaska’s 65th anniversary of statehood, the upcoming cruise season appears to be just as robust, with 19 cruise lines sending 43 ships to the Last Frontier. Kicking things off for the second straight year is the 4,008-passenger Norwegian Bliss, which docked in rustic Skagway last week. With four mainstream-category ships homeported in either Seattle or Vancouver, Norwegian Cruise Line  has nearly 100 more after that.

Two competing companies have staked out even larger claims in this modern-day, maritime Alaskan gold rush. Holland America Line is sending seven premium-class ships for 141 total cruises. And at the top of the totem pole is Princess Cruises , which is celebrating its 55th year in these waters with seven premium ships sharing 158 departures.

Not counting grand voyages with itineraries so rich they make a visit to Alaska seem more like a pit stop, this cruise season will see more than 800 trips of mostly seven to 10 days starting or ending on this side of the Pacific. Where they’re all going is a destination rich in unparalleled wilderness, wildlife and native culture. In other words, bucket list stuff.

“Alaska is one of those places that draws you in and sets the hook right away,” said Kristi Switzer, destination marketing manager for Travel Juneau. “Visitors come for the otherworldly experience of being in the presence of glaciers and fjords, seeing whales and bears and finding the balance of Alaska Native cultural heritage with the rustic sophistication found in the capital city.”

Although Switzer recommends visits lasting several days instead of several hours, the city’s destination evangelist hopes that a partial day in Juneau and each major Alaskan cruise port will have 1.5 million passengers wanting more.

“This magical corner of the world has so much to offer beyond being a checkmark on people’s bucket lists,” she said.

Alaska is a checkmark for about three-quarters of all passengers headed there, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Association, and the same can be said for two ships this season.

Starting with a six-day sail out of Vancouver on May 11, the namesake of Celebrity Cruises ’ popular Edge class will make its Alaskan debut with weeklong roundtrips from Seattle through Sept. 13. The 2,918-passenger vessel features a unique “outside-in” architecture that provides more floor-to-ceiling glass on the exterior and expanded outdoor spaces to soak up the Alaskan coastlines.

Edge will be joined by a pair of fleet mates for the season, albeit Summit’s seven-day roundtrips are turnarounds out of Anchorage or Vancouver, and Solstice’s weeklong jaunts are solely based in the British Columbian seaport. Celebrity, a premier-category cruise line has 57 departures to Alaska scheduled this year.

The other new recruit is Silver Nova, the youngest Silversea Cruises  ship in the luxury fleet to ever service Alaska. Capped at 728 guests, Silver Nova was launched last year and has the goods to do justice to a dreamlike place that captures the imagination of wilderness lovers and history buffs.

“Silver Nova is the ideal ship for Alaska cruising,” said company spokesman Brad Ball. “Her innovative design, which incorporates an unprecedented 4,000 square meters of glass, immerses guests into the incredible scenery of Alaska from virtually all venues and suites, with far-reaching views at every turn.”

The ship’s reimagined pool deck, which overlooks the water on her starboard side, and all-new outdoor venues — the Dusk Bar and the Marquee — allows unique openness to view spectacular Alaskan glaciers and wildlife. Those who want to experience an older and smaller Evolution-class Silversea vessel can book the Silver Muse, which also will sail mostly seven- to 14-day trips between Anchorage and Vancouver.

Because nearly every Alaskan cruise includes the staples — Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Inside Passage and Denali with a land add-on — some cruise lines like to shake things up with unique itineraries.

Holland America has a roundtrip that makes it easy to visit the 49th and 50th states without a long flight. A new “Glaciers & Volcanos: Alaska to Hawaii” cruise, part of the premium line’s Legendary Voyages collection of journeys from 25 to 59 days, departs on Aug. 31 from Seattle or Sept. 1 from Vancouver aboard the 1,916-passenger Westerdam. The nearly four-weeklong itinerary includes seldomly visited Kodiak and Dutch Harbor before heading down to the tropics to make four calls to three Hawaiian islands.

Seabourn  strives to offer a more tasteful Alaskan cruise and not only because it’s an ultra-luxury cruise line. “Caviar on the Ice” is a savory and swanky soiree on every Alaskan voyage, and when the 450-passenger Odyssey is in Sitka, a town originally built by Russian traders in the early 1800s, Seabourn guests can enjoy a culinary adventure that includes a scenic drive to a taproom for a sampling of local brews and a few eateries to try Siberian-rooted pelmeni dumplings and a hot dog made with caribou that the locals call “reindeer dawgs.” Sorry, vegetarians and friends of Santa, but Blitzen on a bun is da bomb.

Disney Cruise Line  is sending its 2,700-passenger Disney Wonder out of Vancouver for 15 week-long roundtrips, one five-day spin leaving on July 24 and an extended nine-day voyage on July 15.

Other cruise lines showing passengers a whale of a time in Alaska include Crystal, Cunard, Hurtigruten, Lindblad/National Geographic, Oceania, Ponant, Regent Seven Seas and Viking.

Juneau had a record-breaking cruise season last year. This year should be about the same.

Juneau’s 2024 cruise ship tourism season is just around the corner as the  first ship of the year  — the Norwegian Bliss — is slated to arrive early Tuesday morning.

Last year, the capital city saw its busiest season ever — welcoming more than 1.6 million passengers. On the busiest days, Juneau welcomed upwards of 21,000 cruise visitors. 

Juneau Tourism Manager Alix Pierce said this year likely won’t top last year’s record-breaking season. She expects to see about the same number of visitors.

“I think it will run a lot more smoothly, and things will be better,” she said. “Generally, our tour operators know what to expect. They know what kind of volume to expect, and they’re gearing up and getting ready.”

In a survey conducted last fall, about 64% of Juneau residents said they wanted to keep the local tourism volume about the same or reduce it slightly. 

But some major problems did crop up during 2023’s record season — things like heavy  downtown congestion , the Mendenhall Glacier reaching  its tour capacity  and business owners saying it was just hard to keep up.

One big change this year for controlling the traffic will be a new limit of  five large ships  per day. 

During a tourism panel on Thursday, Cruise Lines International Association Alaska spokesperson Renee Reeve said that agreement with the city will be key to flattening growth in the coming years.

“I think what that shows is industry’s commitment and CBJs commitment to making this place somewhere that visitors want to visit, and somewhere that the residents want to live,” she said.

A limit on the number of ships does not necessarily mean fewer passengers. But an even bigger change could be coming in 2026. Pierce said the city is in the early stages of negotiating with cruise lines to limit the number of passengers that come off their ships each day. 

“The best thing that we can come up with are daily passenger caps to keep our numbers relatively flat or decrease a little bit,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing some of these things come to fruition, and then seeing how it feels in terms of passenger volume, and numbers and what that means for us as a destination.”

Last season, cruise ship passengers spent a total of $320 million in Juneau, according to a  report that came out last fall.  To support that business, it’s estimated that more than 3,000 people in Juneau worked jobs that were directly related to tourism. 

Local tour operators faced a tough situation after they sold out on  bus trips to the Mendenhall Glacier  halfway through the season, which meant more tourists stayed downtown.

This year, the city plans to send extra buses to follow the city buses that carry people out to the glacier to handle the overflow. Pierce said local operators are also trying to balance their permits over the season to reduce congestion on buses and downtown.

“They’re offering more city tours that go to other sites where you can see the glacier from elsewhere. So they’re trying to pick up that volume in different ways,” she said.

In April, about one-to-three ships will port in Juneau per week before ramping up to three-to-five ships per day by the latter half of May. Ships will continue to port in Juneau nearly every day before winding down in late October. 

And as tourism kicks up for the summer, residents can send in complaints and concerns to the city’s  tourism hotline.
