11 Things to Know About the Cruise Norwegian App

Are you about to sail on a Norwegian cruise? Then you’re going to want to download the Cruise Norwegian app. The program provides all sorts of helpful information to plan and enjoy your cruise — all from the convenience of your phone.

We recently reviewed the app on a cruise, putting it through the paces to see exactly how you can use it and what all you can do with the program on the ship (and even before you board).

If you are about to take a Norwegian cruise, here’s a full review of all the things you should know about the app for your trip.

Norwegian cruise app

The Cruise Norwegian App Is Available on Every Ship

Since first being introduced, the app has continued to roll out among the ships in Norwegian’s fleet. The cruise line recently announced that the app is now available across all ships. So whether you are sailing on the Norwegian Bliss (the line’s newest ship) or Norwegian Spirit (it’s oldest), the app will be available to help plan and reference during your cruise. Best of all, the app is free.

It’s Available For Both Android and Apple

One of the biggest hangups with some apps is that they might only be available for Android or the iPhone. In the case of the Norwegian app, it’s available for both devices . If you are running Android on your phone, it requires version 4.1 or greater. Apple devices need to have iOS of 9.0 or higher.

You Can Use the App to Book Reservations or Shore Excursions

cruise norwegian mobile app

Once you’ve downloaded and logged into the app, then you can start to get a feel of how useful it is. From the program you can find information on dining, entertainment and shore excursions. Find a restaurant you like? You can create a reservation right from the app.

It’s the same thing with shore excursions. Instead of having to book with the staff the ship, you can read more about each adventure offered, including prices. If you find the one you want, you can book it right through your phone; no waiting in line required.

The Cruise Norwegian App Lets You Check-In Online

Checking in online before your cruise can save you lots of time. And while you can do it from your computer, the app also lets you check-in beforehand. You can get your boarding assignment, know when to arrive at the pier and even access your “E-docs” for boarding right from the phone — similar to boarding a plane.

This keeps you from having to print out a stack of boarding papers. Just bring your ID and your boarding docs on the phone and you’re ready to go!

Use the Program to Track Your Spending

Account balance on Norwegian app

One of the most convenient features you’ll find is that you can track your onboard spending through the app. Whether it’s buying a drink, a massage, a meal, or a souvenir, anything you spend on the ship will be logged to your onboard account.

Right from the app — anywhere on the ship — you can see exactly how much you’ve spent. It’s nice to be able to budget on your vacation and also not be surprised by an unexpected bill amount at the end of the cruise.

This tool is especially useful if you have kids traveling with you and you want to keep track of their spending on the cruise.

The Daily Schedule Keeps You On Top of Everything on the Ship

cruise norwegian mobile app

Not sure what’s happening on the ship right now? That’s not a problem if you have the Cruise Norwegian app. For each day on the ship there is a full schedule with everything happening on the ship.

You can quickly browse through and see exactly when and where an event is taking place. You can also mark them with the “heart” icon to make it easy to know exactly what you want to attend.

There Is a Phone & Messaging Tool (It Costs $9.95)

While the app is free, there is one section of the program that costs extra — calls and messaging. As an added feature, you can call or message other people on the ship using the app, for $9.95 per phone. Note that this doesn’t allow you to call or message home. So if you wanted to use the app to call and check on things back on land, that wouldn’t be available. It’s only for contacting people on the ship.

Update: According to the app’s information, you can use it to call home, but at a rate of $0.79 per minute.

Deck Plans Are Incredibly Handy

cruise norwegian mobile app

If you’ve never taken a cruise, you should know that it takes at least a day or two until you can get your bearings on where things are on the ship. With so many decks and few walkways that go the entire length of the ship, it can be confusing to know exactly how to get from Point A to Point B.

That’s why the deck plans included on the Norwegian app are so helpful. You can pull up every deck and see exactly what’s there. It’s an easy way to never get lost again.

You Don’t Have to Purchase Wi-Fi to Use The App

There’s little argument that wi-fi on a Norwegian cruise is expensive. It can cost up to $35 per day . The good news is that you don’t need to pay for wi-fi in order to use the app. While the app connects to the ship’s internet system, it’s free to use. The only part of the program that costs money is the call and messaging feature.

Instead, when you get on the ship you will put your phone in airplane mode and then follow the instructions on the app to connect to the ship’s wi-fi. It will allow you to connect via the app free of charge.

Use the App to Learn More About Restaurants and Bars

Not sure where to eat on the ship? The app has you covered. With more than a dozen restaurants on many ships… not including bars… it can be overwhelming. You’ll find profiles of each within the app, along with information about their costs, location, and more.

It’s a handy way to figure out where you want to eat or drink without having to go bar-hopping all around the ship.

Get Answers to the Most Common Questions

If you’re new to cruising, then there are likely to be a number of questions about your cruise. Everything from how to connect to the wi-fi to what time dinner is on the ship. The Cruise Norwegian app has a full list of “Help” topics like these with full answers.

While it may not be the most exciting thing, it’s super helpful when you have a question and know exactly where to find the answer.

Have more questions about the Cruise Norwegian app? Let us know in the comments below and we’ll do our best to answer them.

We uploaded the app years ago and have used it, however, it is in my husbands name and I can’t get my own personal app. Seems like we struggled to get my phone to connect with our party when we tried on one cruise. How do I get the app to add me separately?

Can I download the NCL app without giving my credit card information?

Yes, of course.

The app is horrible pre-cruise. Would like to see my times at port and when I hit the itinerary link one f two things happen. I’m forced to go to the web that opens nothing, or I’m forced to look at excursions. Arrival times are posted but not departure times. Please get it together. This is my first NCL cruise and I hope it’s not my last!!!

When do you purchase the phone and messaging app? Can you do it before you leave or must you be on the ship in order to purchase it.?

I would like to use the app but it will not load to my phone. My wife has the same phone and can use the app. There does not seem to be any help with the app

So, if we are on a 15 night cruise is the $9.95 plan per trip or per day?

Per trip, not per day!

Does the 9.95 messenger thing work acceptably now? Last cruise 3 years ago it was terrible and the internet cafe helper said it rarely worked for him

That I’m not sure about!

Does the 2022 NCL App have the actual daily menu’s for MDR, Specialty, Haven & theme night for buffet, so while eating breakfast you can decide what’s for lunch & dinner! Might you also find it on the TV in Cabin! TYIA!

Does the phone or person you want message also need to have the app and pay for the service?

Does everyone on the reservation, need to create a separate account?

Can you book spa passes or treatments on the app? Will the app let you make dinner reservations in the main dinning areas? Traveling with 10 most nights are booked in the specialty dining but would be nice to book one of the main dining rooms a night or two

Yes you can make some reservations, but you might not need to make a reservation for non-specialty restaurants. If you can’t make them from the app, it’s really simple to make spa reservations from your cabin phone or just login to your account before your cruise.

I see that you said it costs per phone, so does that mean for 2 people in a stateroom that both people need to create a separate ncl account (to be used on each phone)? Or do you login to the same account on both phones?

While we haven’t tried it personally with multiple people, it’s our understanding that the chat feature is on a per phone basis. Here’s what the app says:

“Yes, once you purchase a Phone and Messenger package, you can make an unlimited number of calls and messages to other guests with the package for one flat rate. In addition you can call staterooms, and to a variety of shipboard guest service extensions.”

Does Norwegian Cruise Line take your photos if you pay to use the Messaging service for $9.98?

Not sure what you are asking.

What You Need To Know About Norwegian’s New Cruise App

Upping their technological game, Norwegian Cruise Line today announced an all-new version of their app. The redesigned Cruise Norwegian app’s main purpose is the best one imaginable: To help eliminate stress as you plan (not to mention enjoy) your vacation.

How The Cruise App Helps Before You Even Board!

“Whether they’re 60 days from their sail date or in the middle of their cruise, the Cruise Norwegian app [allows for] seamless, anytime access to a myriad of onboard offerings, services and activities,” said Andy Stuart, president and chief executive officer for the line. “Once on board, the Cruise Norwegian app will allow guests to continue customizing their ideal cruise experience and view or manage their existing account information, allowing them to maximize their time and spend it on the things they enjoy the most.”

And let’s face it: Nobody lists “having to stand in line at the guest services desk” as one of the things they enjoy most. In fact, it probably doesn’t even crack the top 20.

Anthem of the Seas vs. Norwegian Breakaway

The Cruise Norwegian app is, at the end of the day, an update of their current iConcierge app. At the moment, the Cruise Norwegian app is only available on the Norwegian Sky . It next will be rolled out when the line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Bliss , joins the fleet this summer. And by the end of 2018, the app is expected to be available to all passengers sailing with Norwegian.

What You Can Do With The Norwegian App Now!

While the app may not yet be available for most current passengers, it can still be downloaded and accessed as a way to help plan your next vacation. If you already have an account with Norwegian Cruise Line, you can use the same log-in information to, after downloading the app gain access. Immediately upon signing in, you’ll see your current Latitudes reward level (and can easily find out what perks come with that level), as well as any future cruises you. Users will be able to read about and book shore excursions, make dinner reservations and more. Like with the iConcierge app, passengers will be able to pay a one-time (per cruise) fee of $9.95 and call or message others on the ship who have also accessed the program. Furthermore, guests will be able to make outbound calls via the app for 79 cents per minute.

Will you be downloading the free app? Which function do you think you’ll find most useful?

NCL app for texting and messaging

Cool Cruiser

We are a large group spread across multiple rooms. We have the 250 mins internet package already. I heard that the NCL app allows you  to communicate with other members of your party. Is that free ? Or is that part of the 250 mins ? Or do I need to pay an additional charge ?

It's $10/device, does not require the internet package, works off the ship's local wifi.

A little clarification from our recent trip.  We had the 250 minute internet plan.  Put your phone on airplane mode once you board, turn on the wireless, and login to the app.  That uses a free WiFi available on the ship and doesn't consume any of your internet time.  The app is useful for things like making dinner reservations, or seeing what activities are going on around the ship, etc.

In addition, if you're sending iMessages with an iPhone, you can use them without any charge -- whether or not you're on the ship.  My hubby and I were able to text each other without using any of our minutes this way, and could also text my daughter who was at home dealing with a sick baby.  This ONLY work with iPhones, not phones that send regular text messages.

We also had trouble trying to sending message to phones that didn't use iMessage.  Even though we had the wireless, they simply wouldn't send if it wasn't an iMessage.  Don't know if that would have changed if we'd paid the $10 device charge, but since we didn't need to use it to communicate on the other ship, we never paid that.

We were able to imessage on RCCl Anthem on & off the ship to home as well. What ship were you on NCL?

We will be on Joy in Oct. This would be good.

On the Joy!  Since we were in Alaska there were a few places, where we were in narrow mountainous areas and the WiFi didn't work at all that we couldn't iMessage, but that was the exception and not the rule.

Thank you, we go to Victoria then San Fran to LA

Just curious.  With the iPhone what phone service do you have that was working to message ?

Also were you able to connect to the internet ?  In port or away?

How recent was your cruise because the "free" iMessage loop hole was closed some time ago.....  you now need an internet package to use iMessage.

The NCL application is indepent of any internet package and every phone is required to purchase the texting / calling piece at a cost of approx $10 to communicate with each other EVEN if you have an internet package.. the free part is for shipboard information only.

I have Sprint -- and it worked better than I expected. On the ship I was in airplane mode though, so not using my service.  We did have internet available on the ship because we had the internet package.  In port it was spotty.  Ketchikan I had it sitting in the middle of the water while we were going out to halibut fish.  Juneau was a little spottier, and Skagway we had it right in town -- and then picked up service in Carcross too.

Sailed on 6/15, got back 6/22/19.  This was very recent.

Yup, that's a "hole" that was left open (intentionally or not I'm not sure) on that ship and others using the RoyalIQ app.  There is a transition in progress to a new app, the Royal app, which actually has free messaging within the app for now.  That free messaging may be open so they can work out the bugs, then they'd put it behind a "paywall".

Follow up question - should I have every individual in the room register on the NCL app/site ? Or can the same profile be accessed from two phones ?

That is what I would expect...... ute_fan experience is not the norm

I have a slightly different question- I purchased the 'social media package' on Escape. Says most social media, such as facebook, instagram, etc, and most messaging apps. What do they mean by messaging apps? I'm using a Samsung Galaxy, my daughter a Google phone. Will we be able to text people at home while on this wifi package? It's not the 250 minutes, but unlimited social media. Anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

Big difference between "messenger" and "messaging"...  Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram (DM messengers) are messenger apps.  I personally love WhatsApp and those at home just have to install it and you can chat with the Social Media Package. It does not allow text messages

The best cruise apps to streamline your vacation at sea

Side View Of Mid Adult Woman Using Mobile Phone While Sitting On Rock Against Sea

For better or worse, you'll be hard-pressed to go just about anywhere on today's cruise ships without your smartphone in hand. Major cruise lines have embraced the cell phone as a necessary travel accessory, and they've built out the app technology to go with it.

Nearly all major cruise lines feature their own apps with basic functionality that lets cruisers peruse deck plans and daily schedules. The more advanced ones feature a sleek digital embarkation process, cabin unlocking capabilities and plenty of opportunities to reserve dining and shore excursions.

The most cutting-edge apps at sea are where you'll find travel technology at its best: think ordering Champagne with the press of a button or having a fresh pizza delivered to you anywhere on the ship.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter

Whether you're angling for new towels while still in the pool or ready to order breakfast in bed from under the sheets, the best cruise apps will get you what you need quickly and easily. Here are our favorite cruise line-specific apps, as well as a few third-party apps that cruise fans will definitely want to download.

Note: Nearly all of these apps can be found on Apple's App Store or via Android Apps on Google Play. Be sure to download your cruise line's app onto your phone or tablet and log in to your account before you set sail. Once on board, opt for your phone's airplane mode and hop on the ship's Wi-Fi. Cruise line-specific apps will be free to use on board — no Wi-Fi package required.

No matter where you are on a Carnival Cruise Line ship, there can be a pizza headed your way with just a few taps of the Carnival HUB app . Just mark your exact spot on the ship, take a selfie to identify yourself, and your order will be there shortly. The delivery is $5 but the pizza with unlimited toppings is free.

The HUB app is useful for perusing menus throughout the ship, reserving your seat for select mainstage shows and booking a ride on the new BOLT roller coaster on Carnival's Mardi Gras cruise ship. Onboard chat is available through the app for an additional $5 per person, limited to passengers ages 13 and over.

Celebrity Cruises App

cruise norwegian mobile app

The Celebrity Cruises App brings a smart-home sensibility to sea on Celebrity Cruises ' Edge-class ships (Celebrity Edge, Apex and Beyond). The app transforms your phone into a handy remote that controls your cabin's TV, room temperature, lighting options and window shades. Having clearly labeled, easy-to-dim lights at your fingertips is an understated luxury that we wish all ship cabins had.

Other winning app features found fleetwide include a digital key to get into your stateroom (not available on Celebrity Reflection), free in-app chat to connect with your group on the ship and an easy dinner reservation system.

Cruise Norwegian app

cruise norwegian mobile app

Norwegian Cruise Line 's Cruise Norwegian app has a rare and coveted feature for traversing the high seas: onboard-only phone calls, voicemails and messaging. It's a premium feature but at $9.95 per person, per cruise, the convenience of communication is worth the nominal price. Rates for calls off the ship start at $0.79 a minute. If your communication style is through gifts, the app can help with that, too: a few taps sends wine, flowers and specialty treats to any cabin on board.

CruiseMapper

cruise norwegian mobile app

Locate a cruise ship anywhere in the world in real time and then explore it with the free CruiseMapper app . The app is the most comprehensive cruise ship tracking app available, pinpointing nearly every major passenger ship at sea on all oceans, rivers and lakes at its exact location. Learn more about each ship with deck plans, cabin details, itinerary schedules and reviews.

Cunard Line's My Voyage

Cunard's My Voyage app is most useful as an onboard digital planner for your days at sea. A few features from the app that add some convenience to your getaway include virtual queues for restaurants, so you can grab a pre-dinner cocktail instead of waiting in line, and virtual restaurant reservations for those that want to plan ahead. If you're not feeling up to snuff, the app's telehealth feature will get you seen by the onboard medical team without having to leave your cabin.

Disney Cruise Line Navigator app

cruise norwegian mobile app

Disney Cruise Line has built one of the most robust app experiences at sea. The most helpful resource on the Navigator App is the onboard live chat feature that connects passengers to crew members including guest services, the port excursions team and the dining team. If your questions are a bit more than you can type, just request a one-on-one in-person meeting and the app will tell you where and when to show up. The app also features a free chat system featuring Disney emoticons, adding a touch of fun to your onboard communications.

Holland America Line Navigator app

cruise norwegian mobile app

Convenient, time-saving features are the main draw of Holland America Line 's refreshed Navigator app . Most exciting is the ability to order coffee, food or in-stateroom service from the app anywhere on the ship. If you're angling for a snack, simply fire up the app, place your order and within minutes your food will be ready for pick up at the ship's New York Deli & Pizza eatery.

The app also has a useful way of organizing your itinerary, providing you the convenience of selecting and saving activities you want to take part in to help you better plan your day. That itinerary will also include any dining reservations and shore excursions you've booked.

Mobile Passport Control

cruise norwegian mobile app

A must for any passengers cruising internationally, the Mobile Passport Control app (now known as the CPB MPC app) allows eligible passengers to upload their passport and customs declarations for digital screening. While the app and digital upload are not required to pass through customs, completing the steps on your app helps streamline your entry into the US. Consider the logistics of a large ship with thousands docking at a U.S. port, all required to go through customs at the same time, and you'll be glad you have this free app ready to help cut down on your overall wait time.

If you're traveling on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa, the app can also connect to a Bluetooth speaker in your room so you can set the mood with your favorite tunes.

Princess Cruises' MedallionClass app

cruise norwegian mobile app

Princess Cruises ' MedallionClass app has more functionality than many of the cruise line apps on this list. Use the app to order just about anything on board to just about anywhere, from food and drinks to merchandise. Restock your cabin with a few taps on the app for complimentary bathrobes, pillow options, towels, face masks, hangers and ice. Use the app to highlight activities you're interested in to create your own personalized itinerary. Keep in touch with your party through in-app messaging and location tracking via the ship's Medallion devices (more on those shortly).

If you're angling for a bit of gambling poolside or anywhere else on the ship, power up your app when the ship's at sea to wager virtual money in practice mode or real money on the app's casino. If you're looking for less-expensive thrills, PlayOcean turns the app into a digital scavenger hunt through the decks of the ship.

The app also helps to expedite the boarding process before your trip with passport uploading, a security photo and the option to pre-order your free Medallion device (a quarter-sized, wearable RFID device) that will be essential to your cruise experience.

User friendly and alerts you about availability

Easy access and user friendly navigation ( do you like the pun ) is essential . Make easy easy for everyone , from Grand parents to teenagers . No unique hidden idiosyncrasies . This is certainly the best cruise app that I have used . Keep improving NCL and you will get my business . Choice and flexibility .

Best cruise line

I love not this is my third cruise and I’m already looking for my next one. Great staff. Great entertainment good food and fantastic ships. Love it.
This app is not user friendly at all. The ‘My Plans’ page is poorly laid out and hard to understand. The app constantly tries to get me to ‘leave the app and open page in browser’… incredibly annoying and defeats the purpose of using the app in the first place! And payments aren’t possibly through the app as my bank requires a secondary verification page which doesn’t load in the app, it just appears blank. Needs a serious redesign/feature upgrade!

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH) is Attracting Investor Attention: Here is What You Should Know

Norwegian Cruise Line ( NCLH Quick Quote NCLH - Free Report ) has recently been on Zacks.com's list of the most searched stocks. Therefore, you might want to consider some of the key factors that could influence the stock's performance in the near future.

Shares of this cruise operator have returned +25.3% over the past month versus the Zacks S&P 500 composite's +3.6% change. The Zacks Leisure and Recreation Services industry, to which Norwegian Cruise Line belongs, has gained 5.9% over this period. Now the key question is: Where could the stock be headed in the near term?

Although media reports or rumors about a significant change in a company's business prospects usually cause its stock to trend and lead to an immediate price change, there are always certain fundamental factors that ultimately drive the buy-and-hold decision.

Earnings Estimate Revisions

Rather than focusing on anything else, we at Zacks prioritize evaluating the change in a company's earnings projection. This is because we believe the fair value for its stock is determined by the present value of its future stream of earnings.

We essentially look at how sell-side analysts covering the stock are revising their earnings estimates to reflect the impact of the latest business trends. And if earnings estimates go up for a company, the fair value for its stock goes up. A higher fair value than the current market price drives investors' interest in buying the stock, leading to its price moving higher. This is why empirical research shows a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and near-term stock price movements.

For the current quarter, Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to post earnings of $0.11 per share, indicating a change of +136.7% from the year-ago quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate has changed +116.4% over the last 30 days.

The consensus earnings estimate of $1.25 for the current fiscal year indicates a year-over-year change of +78.6%. This estimate has changed +14.2% over the last 30 days.

For the next fiscal year, the consensus earnings estimate of $1.67 indicates a change of +33.1% from what Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to report a year ago. Over the past month, the estimate has changed +0.6%.

Having a strong externally audited track record , our proprietary stock rating tool, the Zacks Rank, offers a more conclusive picture of a stock's price direction in the near term, since it effectively harnesses the power of earnings estimate revisions. Due to the size of the recent change in the consensus estimate, along with three other factors related to earnings estimates , Norwegian Cruise Line is rated Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

The chart below shows the evolution of the company's forward 12-month consensus EPS estimate:

12 Month EPS

Revenue Growth Forecast

While earnings growth is arguably the most superior indicator of a company's financial health, nothing happens as such if a business isn't able to grow its revenues. After all, it's nearly impossible for a company to increase its earnings for an extended period without increasing its revenues. So, it's important to know a company's potential revenue growth.

In the case of Norwegian Cruise Line, the consensus sales estimate of $2.22 billion for the current quarter points to a year-over-year change of +22.1%. The $9.37 billion and $9.96 billion estimates for the current and next fiscal years indicate changes of +9.6% and +6.3%, respectively.

Last Reported Results and Surprise History

Norwegian Cruise Line reported revenues of $1.99 billion in the last reported quarter, representing a year-over-year change of +30.8%. EPS of -$0.18 for the same period compares with -$1.04 a year ago.

Compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.99 billion, the reported revenues represent a surprise of -0.29%. The EPS surprise was -38.46%.

Over the last four quarters, Norwegian Cruise Line surpassed consensus EPS estimates three times. The company topped consensus revenue estimates two times over this period.

No investment decision can be efficient without considering a stock's valuation. Whether a stock's current price rightly reflects the intrinsic value of the underlying business and the company's growth prospects is an essential determinant of its future price performance.

Comparing the current value of a company's valuation multiples, such as its price-to-earnings (P/E), price-to-sales (P/S), and price-to-cash flow (P/CF), to its own historical values helps ascertain whether its stock is fairly valued, overvalued, or undervalued, whereas comparing the company relative to its peers on these parameters gives a good sense of how reasonable its stock price is.

The Zacks Value Style Score (part of the Zacks Style Scores system), which pays close attention to both traditional and unconventional valuation metrics to grade stocks from A to F (an An is better than a B; a B is better than a C; and so on), is pretty helpful in identifying whether a stock is overvalued, rightly valued, or temporarily undervalued.

Norwegian Cruise Line is graded A on this front, indicating that it is trading at a discount to its peers. Click here to see the values of some of the valuation metrics that have driven this grade.

Bottom Line

The facts discussed here and much other information on Zacks.com might help determine whether or not it's worthwhile paying attention to the market buzz about Norwegian Cruise Line. However, its Zacks Rank #3 does suggest that it may perform in line with the broader market in the near term.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

cruise norwegian mobile app

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti:

Haiti violence: Military airlifts American personnel out of embassy as Haiti spirals into violence

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 25 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 25 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through April 15. Changes can be made through April 30.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Is Royal Caribbean still going to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises normally sail to Labadee, Haiti , a private destination roughly six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car. However Royal Caribbean is skipping several previously scheduled stops, in coming days.

The following sailings will not go to Labadee.

  • Adventure of the Seas: 3/15 sailing
  • Mariner of the Seas: 3/16 sailing
  • Explorer of the Seas: 3/17 sailing
  • Oasis of the Seas: 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/7 and 4/14 sailings
  • Symphony of the Seas: 3/17, 3/23, 3/31, 4/6, 4/14, 4/20 and 4/28 sailings
  • Grandeur of the Seas: 3/18 sailing
  • Independence of the Seas: 4/4, 4/8, 4/18 and 4/22 sailings

"The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority," a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. "Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly."

As recently as Monday, the cruise line had not canceled any sailings to Labadee, but was keeping a close on the situation while noting that it had private security in the area, which was closed to the public.

It doesn’t look like any Celebrity cruises are scheduled there until fall.

Norwegian safety body criticizes cruise ship that nearly ran aground in 2019 storm

cruise norwegian mobile app

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A cruise ship carrying more than 1,370 people should never have left a northern Norway harbor five years ago despite storm warnings, forcing a major evacuation by helicopter. Norwegian officials said Tuesday it could have developed into “the worst disasters at sea in modern times.” On March 23, 2019, the Viking Sky ship with mostly English-speaking passengers, had left the northern Norway and was headed south along the coast when it had engine problems and issued a mayday call. Passengers saw a large wave crashing through glass doors and knocking people across the floor of an area where they were instructed to gather as a muster point. The ship later limped into a Norwegian port on its own engines.

David Datro Fofana’s Chelsea fee could be redistributed over allegations of forged contracts

Exclusive: The striker’s first club, Abidjan City FC, appealed unsuccessfully to CAS but will now take their claim higher

David Datro Fofana of Burnley despairs at a missed chance during the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Burnley FC at Anfield on February 10, 2024 in Liverpool, England

David Datro Fofana’s first club will go to the Federal Supreme Court over his controversial departure to Europe and want 20 per cent of his move to Chelsea as part of claims he was “stolen” by Molde FK in Norway.

Abidjan City FC have been unsuccessful in their case against Fofana and Molde at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and intend to take the matter higher. They say he had a professional contract and his move to Molde was unlawful.

The CAS ruling, seen by Telegraph Sport, outlines the accusations of forged contracts and also the level of interest in the Ivory Coast striker before he moved away from Africa and eventually to the Premier League.

Former Olympiacos midfielder Marco Né, president at Abidjan City, insists he is pursuing justice in the case rather than money, saying other African clubs will risk losing their players to European teams unless he fights Molde and Fofana.

“We just want justice,” said Né, who has previously described Fofana as being “stolen”. “Without it, it means big clubs can come and take our players. This is dangerous for African football, not just for me.”

Fofana has been on loan at Burnley and, with four goals in his last seven games , their survival hopes in the Premier League are pinned on the 21-year-old January loan signing from Chelsea. But it is the start of his journey that has been at the centre of a bitter legal dispute for the past three years.

Molde signed Fofana on a free transfer in 2021 but Abidjan City claim he had a professional contract with them. The Ivorian club used handwriting experts to analyse the signature of Valérie Datro, the player’s mother, on a five-year contract. Club sources believe other legal cases can be raised over Fofana’s contract.

“Many clubs would take him if he was free,” said Né. “He was in the national team. How could he be free? Everyone knows that he was under contract. I even talked with Leicester. I spoke with [then assistant] Kolo Touré as he is my brother from the same academy. But everyone helped the move, even the federation.

“We think this is not justice. The player had a licence with us and only with us. He started with us when he was 14 and, when he was old enough, signed for five years in 2017.”

The CAS papers show that Abidjan City had French club Angers lined up as a deal for Fofana, which forms €1.065 million of the claim, plus 20 per cent of the deal to Chelsea which ended up being worth around £13 million. But there was also interest, the papers show, from Ligue 1 club Strasbourg and Waasland Beveren in Belgium, while Brighton were linked with Fofana.

Né also says there was an approach from a third party, rather than directly from clubs, suggesting a financial settlement between all clubs. This was during the time Chelsea were negotiating for Fofana ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge in Dec 2022. “I said no,” added Né.

Norwegian safety body criticizes cruise ship that nearly ran aground in 2019 storm

The cruise ship Viking Sky arrives at port off Molde,...

The cruise ship Viking Sky arrives at port off Molde, Norway, Sunday March 24, 2019, after it issued a mayday call following engine problems in heavy seas off Norway's western coast. A cruise ship carrying more than 1,370 people set sail along Norway's often wild western coast despite storm warnings, forcing a major evacuation by helicopter, should never have left harbor, Norwegian officials said Tuesday, March 19, 2024, adding it could have developed into “the worst disasters at sea in modern times.” Credit: AP/Svein Ove Ekornesvag

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — A cruise ship at the center of a dramatic evacuation off north Norway five years ago should never have left port because it was not up to safety standards, officials said Tuesday, adding that it could have developed into one of the worst disasters at sea in modern times.

In a report, the Norwegian Safety Investigation Authority upbraided the Viking Sky, saying it was ”a ship's length from running aground.”

The ship left the northern city of Tromsoe carrying almost 1,400 people, despite storm warnings. It was headed for Stavanger in southern Norway when it had engine problems amid a storm on March 23, 2019, and issued a mayday call.

The ship anchored in heavy seas to avoid being dashed on the rocks in an area known for shipwrecks. Passengers saw a large wave crashing through glass doors and knocking people across the floor of an area where they had been instructed to gather.

Nearly 480 passengers were winched off the ship by helicopter despite high winds in a daring rescue operation. The captain then decided to halt the evacuation, and about 900 people were still on board when the ship limped into the Norwegian port of Molde on its own engines.

Dozens of people were injured during the ship’s harrowing ordeal, including 36 who were admitted to hospitals.

Norwegian authorities immediately launched a probe into the accident, which concluded Tuesday that the ship was unprepared to sail in rough seas.

“The accident was caused by insufficient lubricating oil in all of the operating diesel generators’ lubricating oil sump tanks, in combination with pitching and rolling in rough seas,” investigators wrote. “The investigation has identified operational, technical, and organisational safety issues that in different ways contributed to the blackout.”

"As Viking Sky did not comply with the applicable safety standards, it should not have departed Tromsoe under the prevailing circumstances,” the report said.

There was no immediate reaction from operator Viking Ocean Cruises.
