As a health care provider, be sure to prepare your globe-trotting patients for travel by providing a quick pretravel risk assessment, consultation, and care. THINK TRAVEL:

  • Ask your patients if they plan on any international travel .
  • Make sure they are up- to- date on all routine vaccines before their trip.
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Yellow fever
  • Japanese encephalitis

Get Vaccinated Before You Travel

It’s important to plan ahead to get the shots required for all countries you and your family plan to visit.

Family of three in an airport waiting

Protect your child and family when traveling in the United States or abroad by:

  • Getting the shots required for all countries you and your family plan to visit during your trip
  • Making sure you and your family are up-to-date on all routine U.S. vaccines
  • Staying informed about travel notices and alerts and how they can affect your family’s travel plans

Avoid getting sick or coming back home and spreading the disease to others.

Vaccinate at least a month before you travel

See your doctor when you start to plan your trip abroad. It’s important to do this well in advance.

  • Your body needs time to build up immunity.
  • You may need several weeks to get all the doses of the vaccine.
  • Your primary doctor may not stock travel vaccines. Visit a travel medical clinic .
  • You’ll need time to prepare for your pre-travel appointment .
  • If the country you visit requires a yellow fever vaccine , only a limited number of clinics have the vaccine and will probably be some distance from where you live. You must get it at least 10 days before travel.

Find out which vaccines are recommended or required for the countries you plan to visit .

TIP : Save time by getting routine vaccines during the same doctor visit. Use the Vaccine Self-Assessment Tool and discuss the results with your doctor. It tells you which U.S. recommended vaccines you (19 years and older) or your child (birth – 18 years) might need.

Last-minute travelers

When traveling to another country be aware your doctor may not carry a travel vaccine and you may have to visit a medical clinic.

Many travel vaccines require multiple shots or take time to become fully effective. But some multiple-dose vaccines (like hepatitis A) can still give you partial protection after just one dose. Some can also be given on an “accelerated schedule,” meaning doses are given in a shorter period of time.

Pharmacy’s growing role in travel health vaccination

As newly appointed chair of the Pharmacy Professional Group of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), I represent more than 500 pharmacists who provide specialist travel health and travel medicine services globally. Also, as a member of the leadership council, I also represent the voice of pharmacy and am instrumental in the development of working with other professions. The position was established to characterise the role the pharmacist plays in travel medicine globally by providing opportunities for networking and information exchange, and collaboration in research and education.

With more UK pharmacists entering into the provision of travel health services, there is a need to provide support for standards of education. This includes a minimum level of knowledge and competency — particularly in the provision of disease knowledge, risk assessment and risk management. The UK has the opportunity to define these and become the first country to have a minimum set of externally assessed standards that are aligned with, and supported by, other healthcare professions.

The role of the pharmacist in the UK is becoming more clinical and more pharmacists are becoming involved in travel health services. With the introduction of increased clinical provision comes the opportunity to undertake practice-based research. In community pharmacy, this can come from simple surveys and audits that have been undertaken and submitted for publication online. The results would provide evidence of continuing education and support the new professional standards and revalidation.

In October 2017, NHS England asked Public Health England to consider removing travel vaccines from the NHS  and, in April 2017, GP practice staff were informed by NHS Resolution that they are not insured to supply private travel vaccines under the clinical negligence scheme. With the Association of British Travel Agents reporting continued growth in travel, there is now a greater opportunity for pharmacists to support local medical services, and have the ability to undertake this role.

Undergraduate training must reflect the increasing demand for pharmacy travel health services. Courses should be revised to include travel health, included either as an extension of infectious diseases, or as an elective subject, as in US pharmacy schools.

For further information regarding travel health services in the UK or ISTM, please contact me at:  [email protected]

Travel Immunization in the Pharmacy: Exploring the Growing Opportunity

US citizens are increasingly traveling to international destinations, with Americans making 38 million visits abroad in 2017. Fortunately, pharmacists are well-placed to assist patients in their travel health needs.

US citizens are increasingly traveling to international destinations, with Americans making 38 million visits abroad in 2017. Fortunately, pharmacists are well-placed to assist patients with their travel health needs.

An article published in the December 2018 of Pharmacy reviewed studies on pharmacy-based travel services. The outcomes of the studies support the role of pharmacists in the travel-health services setting.

Pharmacists’ scope of practice in administering travel vaccines varies by state (Table); notably, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Florida, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, and South Carolina have specific travel health training requirements. However, all pharmacists can provide counseling and over-the-counter medications and supplies for travel.

Pharmacists interested in travel health services can complete the APhA Pharmacy-based Immunization Delivery Certificate Training Program as a prerequisite for the APhA Advanced Competency Training Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services program. The gold standard in travel health information is the International Society of Travel Medicine’s (ISTM’s) Body of Knowledge, which forms the basis for the society’s Certificate of Knowledge Examination. Those who pass earn a Certificate in Travel Health by the ISTM that must be renewed every 10 years.

Patient satisfaction was high when pharmacists delivered travel health services, according to the study. However, patients did not always accept the pharmacist’s recommendations for vaccines. Acceptance rates varied depending on the vaccine and the patient’s perceived risk of contacting the illness. Additionally, patients were primarily interested in travel-related vaccines and not routine vaccines.

The CDC provides resources on travel health that pharmacist can utilize and direct patients towards. Most patients receive travel information from airlines or a travel agencies that may fail to stress the importance of pre-travel vaccines. Pharmacists’ are at an ideal position at the forefront of patient-care to educate travelers on the vaccine preventable diseases they can encounter abroad.

Vaccines for Travelers

Vaccines protect travelers from serious diseases. Depending on where you travel, you may come into contact with diseases that are rare in the United States, like yellow fever. Some vaccines may also be required for you to travel to certain places.

Getting vaccinated will help keep you safe and healthy while you’re traveling. It will also help make sure that you don’t bring any serious diseases home to your family, friends, and community.

On this page, you'll find answers to common questions about vaccines for travelers.

Which vaccines do I need before traveling?

The vaccines you need to get before traveling will depend on few things, including:

  • Where you plan to travel . Some countries require proof of vaccination for certain diseases, like yellow fever or polio. And traveling in developing countries and rural areas may bring you into contact with more diseases, which means you might need more vaccines before you visit.
  • Your health . If you’re pregnant or have an ongoing illness or weakened immune system, you may need additional vaccines.
  • The vaccinations you’ve already had . It’s important to be up to date on your routine vaccinations. While diseases like measles are rare in the United States, they are more common in other countries. Learn more about routine vaccines for specific age groups .

How far in advance should I get vaccinated before traveling?

It’s important to get vaccinated at least 4 to 6 weeks before you travel. This will give the vaccines time to start working, so you’re protected while you’re traveling. It will also usually make sure there’s enough time for you to get vaccines that require more than 1 dose.

Where can I go to get travel vaccines?

Start by finding a:

  • Travel clinic
  • Health department
  • Yellow fever vaccination clinic

Learn more about where you can get vaccines .

What resources can I use to prepare for my trip?

Here are some resources that may come in handy as you’re planning your trip:

  • Visit CDC’s travel website to find out which vaccines you may need based on where you plan to travel, what you’ll be doing, and any health conditions you have.
  • Download CDC's TravWell app to get recommended vaccines, a checklist to help prepare for travel, and a personalized packing list. You can also use it to store travel documents and keep a record of your medicines and vaccinations.
  • Read the current travel notices to learn about any new disease outbreaks in or vaccine recommendations for the areas where you plan to travel.
  • Visit the State Department’s website to learn about vaccinations, insurance, and medical emergencies while traveling.

Traveling with a child? Make sure they get the measles vaccine.

Measles is still common in some countries. Getting your child vaccinated will protect them from getting measles — and from bringing it back to the United States where it can spread to others. Learn more about the measles vaccine.

Background: Many countries have enforced strict regulations on travel since the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic in December 2019. However, with the development of several vaccines and tests to help identify it, international travel has mostly resumed in the United States (US). Community pharmacists have long been highly accessible to the public and are capable of providing travel health services and are in an optimal position to provide COVID-19 patient care services to those who are now starting to travel again. Objectives: (1) To discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the practice of travel health and pharmacist provided travel health services in the US and (2) to discuss the incorporation COVID-19 prevention measures, as well as telehealth and other technologies, into travel health care services. Methods: A literature review was undertaken utilizing the following search engines and internet websites: PubMed, Google Scholar, Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and the United States Department of Health and Human Services to identify published articles on pharmacist and pharmacy-based travel health services and patient care in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many country's entry requirements which may now include COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and/or masking requirements in country. Telehealth and other technological advancements may further aid the practice of travel health by increasing patient access to care. Conclusions: Community pharmacists should consider incorporating COVID-19 vaccination and testing services in their travel health practices in order to meet country-specific COVID-19 entry requirements. Further, pharmacists should consider utilizing telehealth and other technologies to increase access to care while further limiting the potential spread and impact of COVID-19.

What Costco's Travel Immunization Service Offers You

S o you've finally booked your bucket-list trip — an all-inclusive safari in Kenya. You imagine the lush flora and distinctive fauna against the vibrant landscapes. You've borrowed your friend's professional camera lens so you can capture many epic images. You know you're going to need plenty of sunscreen and bug spray, and you've stocked up on linen clothing to keep you cool.

But what about your health needs? Some countries won't allow you to bring in prescription drugs like Ambien or Adderall, while others have banned Benadryl or Sudafed (via Reader's Digest ). According to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention , some countries like Kenya require a yellow fever vaccination. If you're traveling abroad, it might seem overwhelming to try to figure out what you'll need to keep you healthy on your trip . To identify which shots or medications are recommended for your destination, you can turn to SafeGard's Full Service Travel Medicine Consultation Program through Costco. This program connects you with a travel medicine physician, who will review your medical history and travel plans and email you a personalized travel report.

How To Get Your Recommended Shots And Medications

When you receive your travel report, SafeGard will also email your pharmacy about your recommended shots and medications. You can then schedule an appointment with your pharmacy to get whatever shots or prescriptions you'll need. Although the consultation costs $39.99 with a Costco membership, the immunizations and medications are extra. You should check with your insurance to see which ones are covered. However, Costco's Member Prescription Program offers discounted pricing for many prescriptions.

The travel immunization program through Costco is only available in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Some states restrict the program to people over 18. The program will only dispense medications and shots at Costco pharmacy, which means you can't use another pharmacy if you purchase this program through Costco. A primary care physician's approval of oral medications is required for some states, but a Costco pharmacy can call your provider for this approval.

Other Considerations For Costco's Travel Immunization Program

If you prefer to get your vaccinations and medications through another pharmacy provider like Safeway or Albertsons, the cost of the program is $55. SafeGard says this online travel immunization program saves you a trip to your primary care provider. However, some primary care providers might require you to schedule an appointment before approving prescriptions.

Some Costco members who've taken part in the travel immunization program have said it was a quick and efficient way to get the right vaccinations for your destination. One user said that the Costco program was a good deal compared to other travel consultations that can cost $125. One user from Oregon was disappointed in the program because her state's laws required her to see her doctor to approve her pill-based vaccinations.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides travel health notices, required vaccinations and medicines, and travel recommendations unique to many international travel destinations. It will additionally give you a packing list to help keep you healthy while you travel overseas . You can also stay up-to-date on any global health risks that can affect your travel. The CDC provides this information for free.
