Arrive in Singapore, Southeast Asia's financial powerhouse and famously its cleanest, greenest city.

Located just one degree north of the equator and surrounded by rainforest, modern-day Singapore is uniquely positioned to understand its own impact on the environment, and has been working hard to earn its reputation as the 'Garden City'. The concrete fronts of skyscrapers and buildings are being repurposed to accommodate green spaces wherever possible, creating their own colourful eco-systems in the sky. And although being one of the most densely populated countries on the planet, over 50% of Singapore is made up of parks and gardens, including of course the very unique Gardens by the Bay.

For those arriving on time our Leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 6pm for the welcome meeting. If you would like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), which is one hour from the hotel. Should you miss the welcome meeting, your Leader will inform you of any essential information over breakfast on day 2.

After the welcome meeting our Tour Leader plans to lead you on a night-walking tour to experience something synonymous with the Singapore experience- its mouth-watering street food. We hop on a public bus and make our way towards Chinatown, first stopping at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. Bathed in the twinkling glow of the city's evening lights, its a place where local Singaporeans come to wind down after a busy day, and is a great spot to witness some games of Chinese Chess being expertly played.

We then move on to Lau Pa Sat, the famous hawkers centre with its mind-boggling array of stalls. Offering anything from classics like steaming Singapore noodles and Malaysian Laksa to Shanghai pork buns or thunder tea rice, it is the place to get adventurous with food. Our Leader will talk us through a variety of dishes, and we end the night with a cooling desert such mango shaved ice or perhaps even a durian dessert.

Accommodation:

Ibis Bencoolen (or similar)

Grade: Comfortable Hotel

Single room available

Meals provided: none.

This morning we head off on foot to discover more of this eclectic city. We start in the characterful commune of Little India, which grew from an Indian enclave in the 19th Century to the buzzing community we find today; brimming with restaurants, shops and art galleries all steeped in Tamil culture. We next move onto Kampong Glam, where the towering golden dome of the Sultan's Mosque watches over the narrow lanes of the Malay quarter, filled with boutique shops selling home-made wares and quirky street art galleries. We change environment again as we move into the Civic District, the birthplace of modern-day Singapore. It was from here where Sir Stamford Raffles vision of Singapore pored outwards, and befittingly it houses some excellent, well-preserved colonial-era buildings, such as the old Parliament House, Supreme Court building and the iconic Cricket Club.

Moving into the more modern areas of Singapore, we stop off at the home of the Merlion, a mythical creature that's half-lion, half-fish, depicted here as a statue spouting water into the Singapore River below. Merlion Park offers great views of the glittering Marina Bay as a backdrop to this famous statue. We end our walking tour today at the Boat Quay, the perfect water-side spot to enjoy a bite to eat or perhaps even a Singapore Sling at one of the many colourful alfresco bars or restaurants.

The remainder of the day has been left free to relax, or to further explore the city at your own pace. Those interested in shopping may wish to visit the trendy Orchard Street, art and nature lovers may wish to stroll around the Gardens by the Bay, and it is also possible to organise a river cruise to see the city from a different perspective.

Meals Provided: Breakfast

Leaving Singapore behind this morning, we cross at Woodlands checkpoint on to the Johor Causeway bridge into Malaysia. We drive north, reaching the Dutch-colonial settlement of Malacca in around four hours. Malacca is one of the oldest towns in Malaysia, and certainly the most cosmopolitan. In its time it has been ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British and the Japanese, finally becoming Malay in 1957.

This afternoon we make a visit to Villa Sentosa. This traditional house offering an interesting insight into the daily lives of a typical middle-class Malaysian family at the turn of the 20th century. This house-come-museum has been kept almost entirely as it was 100 years ago, and is located within the sleepy settlement of Kampong Morten, a village community hidden within the confines of the city.

This evening we include a river cruise, offering an interesting vantage point to watch the sun set over the colonial cityscape.

Rosa Malacca (or similar)

Old Malacca is a fascinating area to wander around and discover and this morning we include a walking tour of some of the major sights such as the tomb of Hang Kasturi, one of Malacca's five great 15th century warriors, and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia.

We then continue on to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, where we should arrive in the late afternoon. East and West rub shoulders in this eclectic and energetic city. KL (as it is known locally) has a hugely varied population, comprising mainly of Malays, Sikhs, Chinese, Indians, Tamils (many in local dress), and the odd splash of saffron from a robed Buddhist monk, adding colour to the vibrant street scenes.

Travelodge Bukit Bintang (or similar)

This morning we head out of the city and on to the iconic Batu Caves. Some 272 steps lead up to the sacred Hindu temple that lies inside the cave, and wonderful views of the city and beyond can be had from the entrance. The temple is a shrine to a Hindu deity, Lord Murugah and the complex consists of three caves full of colourful Hindu murals and artwork. After some time spent exploring, and perhaps witnessing a puja if we are lucky (a Hindu ceremony of worship where often an offering to the gods or deity will be made), we embark on a walking tour of Kuala Lumpur to uncover some of the cultural diversity of this lively and modern city. The tour starts at the colourfully decorated Guan Yin Temple, an ornate Buddhist temple dedicated to Guan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion. We then venture into Chinatown and onto Petaling Street, a pedestrianised lane lined with traditional Chinese lanterns and where anything from sunglasses to Bonsai trees can be bought. We move next onto the Hindu temple of Sri Maha Mariamman, a towering temple that is South Indian in style, and is said to be the oldest Hindu temple in all of Malaysia. On our way out of Chinatown we stop via the Central Market before crossing the Gombak River and onto the city's birthplace. This area offers a stark contrast from Chinatown and is full of historic buildings such as the Cathedral of Saint Mary and the Tudor-styled Royal Selangor club, from Malaysia's colonial days.

The rest of the day is free at leisure. If you would prefer to explore, you may wish to visit 'KLCC' , the area in which the magnificent Petronas Towers lie. For wonderful views of the Towers along with a choice of Asian-inspired cocktails, head for the 'Sky Bar', residing on the 33rd floor of the Traders Hotel, directly opposite the towers.

We will catch a train to Ipoh first thing in the morning and we will then head north to Perak. Although a journey of 200 kilometres, the drive is comfortable and on a well-laid highway. We expect to make it to our homestay in Chenderoh Lake by the early afternoon.

The Suka Suka Lake Retreat is set on the banks of Chenderoh Lake and offers a great insight into daily life in rural Malaysia. It is set amongst tropical forests and working rubber plantations, and its accommodation comprises of a selection of traditional 'Kampung' style guesthouses with en-suite bathrooms and hot showers. Fans and mosquito nets are provided in all of the rooms.

After settling into our homestay we set off for an orientation walk around the local area. This area is home to many different plantations, and we will walk through active rubber and palm oil plantations to learn about how these crops are harvested, and why locals have chosen to make a living this way. We hope it offers a unique insight at a grassroots level into the realities of the oil palm trade, a multi-billion dollar industry for which Malaysia is the second-largest exporter in the world.

We will help to prepare dinner tonight alongside our hosts, which is likely to be a selection local fried fish, nasi goreng (tasty fried rice often served with egg and spices) and steamed vegetables. Sambal is another staple at dinner time - a kind of garnish paste made with chillies, herbs and spices. After dinner there is a chance to try your hand at Congkak - a popular Malaysian board game played with stones or beans.

Suka Suka Homestay (or similar)

Grade: Simple Homestay

Meals Provided: Breakfast & Dinner

This morning has been left free to relax in our natural surroundings. There is the option to take a kayak and have a gentle paddle around the calm waters of Chendorah Lake, or perhaps take another short walk.

Waving goodbye to our hosts we set off for the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's hill-country. The highlands were discovered in the hey-days of the colonial era, with Victorian explorers sending home news of verdant slopes and mild climes which offered respite to Malaysia's punishing summer swelter. The British soon moved in, and up popped country estate houses, vast swathes of lush tea plantations and curious traditions of tea, scones and strawberries.

Present-day Cameron Highlands still retains some of this nostalgic charm, and tea plantations still make up large parts of the landscape.

Dinner tonight serves up a contrast to all of this British influence, as we will be cooking our own Malaysian hot pot. A hearty meal often eaten during winter months, this traditional way of cooking allows for meat and fish to be fried, and vegetables and other ingredients to be boiled all together in one pot under an open flame.

Strawberry Park Resorts (or similar)

Swimming pool available

Travelling by 4WD this morning, we will drive out to the nearby 'Mossy Forest' for a short walk through this eerie landscape. The forest lies at the highest elevation of this range, and as such is enveloped in near-permanent cloud cover, covering the forest in mist and constant moisture. This provides the perfect environment for moss, ferns and other evergreen plants to flourish.

After the Mossy Forest we will continue onto BOH tea factory. Nestled within many hectares of lush tea plantations, BOH have been growing tea for nearly 100 years. We will take a walk through the rows of plantations to see how tea is grown, picked and harvested, before visiting the factory to learn how it is refined to create the different varieties we find in our brews. We end with tea tasting in BOH's tea rooms, located high up with panoramic views of the plantations below.

After lunch, we leave the Cameron Highlands and drive to Penang, our base for the next two nights.

Ozo Georgetown (or similar)

Often called the 'Pearl of the Orient' by the local people, Penang lies some 4km off the Malay mainland. Its deep-water harbour is ideal for trade and so the island has become a haven of commerce. This morning we take an excursion around the island by private bus; visiting the majestic Kek Lok Si Temple, located on top of a hill, giving us a good insight into local life as it takes us through rural villages. You can also ride on the funicular railway to the top of Penang Hill (optional) for far reaching views across the island. In the afternoon you are free to explore. The Botanical Gardens are beautiful and can be reached quite easily by local bus, and there are many other interesting mosques and Buddhist temples to see. Appreciators of art should search out the local batik work at the Penang Art Gallery. In the evening we will organise to eat at one of the many local food stalls that Penang is so famous for, whether Indian, Chinese or Malay, the choice is yours!

We rise early this morning for our hour and half drive to Kuala Kedah and then take a ferry to the idyllic island paradise of Langkawi, a journey of approximately three hours. Langkawi is an archipelago made up of 99 islands lying just off the west coast of the Malaysian Peninsular. Surrounded by turquoise waters, the interior of the main island is a mixture of jungle-clad hills and picturesque paddy fields. This lush interior is encapsulated by white-sand beaches lapped by the warm waters of the Andaman Sea; an ideal place to relax or explore for our last few days in Malaysia. We will be met on arrival on the island and transferred to our base for the next 3 nights, where the rest of the day has been left free at leisure.

Holiday Villa Langkawi (or similar)

Today is a free day where you can choose to relax on the beautiful coconut palm-fringed beaches or perhaps snorkel amongst the tropical fish of the Andaman Sea. If you would prefer to remain more active, there are a number of optional excursions which can be arranged. Optional excursions include an island-hopping cruise where you can discover some of the lesser-visited islands of the archipelago, or a visit to the Northern Mangroves taking in the unique geology, flora and fauna of this area.

We have another free day to relax, unwind, or explore.

The trip ends after breakfast at our hotel in Langkawi.

There are no activities planned today, so you are free to depart from Langkawi at any time. If your flight is departing later in the day luggage storage facilities are available at our hotel. If you would like an airport transfer today, you need to depart from Langkawi International Airport (LGK), which is 30 minutes from the hotel.

4-10 Day Singapore Malaysia Itinerary: Enjoy The Perfect Singapore And Malaysia Trip!

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 4-10 Days

Day 1 – arrive in singapore.

 Gardens By The Bay Singapore

Today is an introduction to Singapore.

  • Start the day at Gardens by the Bay. Visit the conservatories and OCBC Skyway ( tickets here) where you walk among the futuristic trees. If you have kids, take bathers and also visit the childrens gardens. This is my favourite attraction in all of Singapore so don’t skip it! If you are on a budget, it’s still worth coming and walking around for free.
  • Have lunch in the shopping centre at the base of the iconic Marina Bay Sands which is right next to Gardens by the Bay.
  • Take the short train trip to Clarke Quay and walk though here and the historic Fort Canning on your way to the next attraction.
  • Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Singapore ( discount tickets here ).

Day 2 – Singapore

Singapore's Chinatow

Today is all about discovering Singapore’s three main cultural groups.

  • Start the day with some breakfast in Little India and then visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
  • Walk to the nearby Malay area of Kampong Glam. Visit the Malay Heritage Centre and Sultan Mosque before having some Malay food for lunch.
  • Finish with some temple visits in Chinatown before shopping for souvenirs at the markets here and having some great Chinese food for dinner.

Day 3 – Singapore

Sentosa Island and merlion

Your final day in Singapore is all about fun, Sentosa Island style! Sentosa Island is a small island just off the tip of Singapore which is easily reached by public transport, cable car or even walking over. It’s packed full of fun attractions and is Singapore’s playground.

It’s full of top class facilities and just walking around is fun. There are so many different attractions that it’s hard for me to say exactly what you should add to your Singapore Malaysia trip itinerary. It depends on your interests and budget as the attractions can be expensive and add up quickly. There are also many free attractions on Sentosa which you may prefer to stick to.

Here are my top recommendations:

  • Start by heading to the Merlion Plaza and taking a photo of the Sentosa sign with the giant merlion as pictured above. Consider climbing up inside the Merlion Tower for great views ( tickets here ).
  • Take the Skyline Luge and chair lift. This is one of our favourites!
  • For more adrenaline rushes, try Mega Adventure where you can zipline and take a 15 metre jump or fly at iFly !
  • Visit easily one of the best aquariums in the world at S.E.A. Aquarium ( tickets here ).
  • If you have kids, visit the Palawan Pirate Ship. A free (and amazing) water playground.
  • Walk to the Southern Most Point of Continental Asia.
  • Enjoy the beaches
  • Visit Fort Siloso and learn some WWII history

In the evening, head to the free light shows at Resorts World Sentosa.

I also recommend you take the cable car over one way ( discount tickets here ). The views are great! I also love Universal Studios Singapore but with one day, I would go to a few different attractions instead rather than spending the day at one so you get a better taste of Sentosa Island.

To save money and time, buy attraction tickets beforehand at Klook. We have saved so much money this way. Click here for many options.

There is also the Sentosa Fun Pass that can save you a lot of money. You basically buy a number of tokens and then exchange these tokens at various attractions on the island. The number you need depends on what you want to see. I suggest you will at least want 80.

You can find the Sentosa Fun Pass here and information about how many tokens are required for each attraction here.

Where To Stay In Singapore

Here are our best options for each budget. Pick the one that best suits you.

There are a range of room types with doubles and twins on offer. All are spacious and well appointed and have everything you would expect in a 5 star hotel. You can pick the view you want and there are suites for extra luxury with their own living area.

MIDRANGE: Village Hotel Bugis

tour of malaysia and singapore

The Village Hotel Bugis is our favourite hotel for a mix of a great price, very convenient location and a good standard of rooms and facilties. Located close to Bugis MRT station and many shopping centres, it’s easy to get around to all of Singapore here. It’s also located in the Malay area, Kampong Glam, and a short walk from Little India.

There are a range of room types which are all comfortable and well appointed, if on the cosy side. This includes family options which makes this a great choice with kids – we have stayed here with ours multiple times.

The hotel also has a swimming pool, gym and restaurants.

BUDGET: Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse

tour of malaysia and singapore

For bargain seekers, the Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse is also located in a convenient location near Bugis MRT and has everything you need for a budget Singapore stopover with excellent value rooms for the location and price.

Rooms include air conditioning and wifi and there are 2, 3 and 4 people rooms available. To save money, they do not have private bathrooms.

Singapore And Malaysia Itinerary 4 days

If you have just 4 days, use your final day in your Singapore Malaysia itinerary 4 days to do a day trip into Malaysia. Below, there are a range of Malaysia day trip options. Click here to read them and pick one!

My personal favourite is a fun day at Legoland Malaysia , but pick whichever most appeals to you.

We can book a taxi for you for the day to take you into Malaysia and back into Singapore again. Click here and fill in the form with what you want and we’ll get back to you.

If you are only looking for a Singapore Malaysia itinerary 3 days then cut out one of the Singapore days above which is least appealing.

Want the Easiest (and BEST) Way to travel between Singapore and Malaysia?

We can book a taxi for you from anywhere in Malaysia to anywhere in Singapore for a great price.

A taxi is the best way to cross the border as you don’t have to leave the air-conditioned comfort of your vehicle.

Click here for prices and online booking.

Day 4 –Johor Bahru

Legoland Malaysia

It’s time to say a sad goodbye to Singapore before heading over the causeway to more adventures in Malaysia!

There is more information below about how to travel between Malaysia and Singapore. It’s very straightforward.

We can also hire a taxi for you which picks you up at your hotel in Singapore and drops you off at your hotel in Johor Bahru for just SG$90. Click here to book and for more details.

Today, you will have a great day at Legoland Malaysia. You can buy discounted tickets here.

Day 5 – Johor Bahru And Melaka

Central Johor Bahru

This morning, it’s time to see some of Johor Bahru before catching a bus in the afternoon to Melaka.

  • Head to central Johor Bahru near the causeway to Singapore. You can do some shopping or explore the streets to the west of the main strip here. Some are quite pretty and it’s a nice area to stroll around. Eat lunch before leaving Johor Bahru.
  • Take a taxi to the main bus station in Johor Bharu, Larkin Bus Terminal, and then take a bus to Melaka. You can book bus tickets here on some great bus services. The bus takes about three hours and I recommend you book a bus for the early afternoon.
  • Take a taxi to your hotel, freshen up and head to Jonker Street in the evening. If it’s Friday or Saturday night, enjoy the night market, but there are plenty of places to eat any night on this famous strip.

Note that Melaka and Malacca are different ways to spell the same place.

If you have your own vehicle on this journey, I recommend stopping at Muar on your way. It does not take much extra time to do this, but Muar is a pretty city with some great street art and is a great plae to break up the journey.

Read more about Muar here.

Where To Stay In Johor Bahru

Luxury: doubletree by hilton hotel johor bahru.

tour of malaysia and singapore

Located just minutes from the Causeway in a convenient location, the DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru is a great choice if you want a luxury hotel which is easy to use as a base to explore both Johor Bahru and Singapore.

Despite not being rated as a five-star hotel, it is our top pick of the options near the Causeway. It has first class facilities including a stunning outdoor swimming pool on the 13th floor, four restaurants, gym, steam room, spa and wifi.

Each of the hotel’s spacious guest rooms have everything you would expect from a top option such as air conditioning, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a pillow menu. There are also larger suites with separate living areas as well as rooms which are apartment style and have a kitchenette with washing machine. All this for a great price!

MIDRANGE: Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru

hourly rate hotel in Johor Bahru

For a midrange price option, you can’t go past the Puteri Pacific Johor Bahru. Also well located near the Causeway and shopping, this is a great base for Singapore and Johor Bahru exploration.

There are many facilities at this hotel. You can use the tennis and squash courts, a gym, sauna and a yoga studio.  Other facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, a day spa, three onsite restaurants and bars.

There are a range of accommodation options at this hotel. In addition to standard hotel rooms, you can book a room with a separate living and sleeping area or even a room with a kitchenette.

BUDGET: Baguss Hotel And Serviced Apartment

tour of malaysia and singapore

For a real bargain, consider the Baguss Hotel and Serviced Apartments. Close to the Causeway and downtown shopping areas, this standard, 3-star hotel is especially a great choice for families and groups looking for accommodation.

There are a range of hotel rooms suitable from two to four people. Each hotel room includes air conditioning, a TV, wifi, tea and coffee making facilities and a refrigerator. For larger groups, there are 3 bedroom apartments which can accommodate up to 6 people. These apartments include a kitchen and lounge room.

Find more Johor Bahru accommodation options here.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary 5 Days

If you are looking for a 5 days 4 nights Singapore Malaysia itinerary then you can do the five days above and head back to Singapore to fly out on day 5 instead of on to Melaka.

You could also consider spending all 5 days in Singapore and just taking a day trip to Johor Bahru. If money isn’t an issue, this is a good choice. Otherwise, it is more budget friendly to stay in Johor Bahru accommodation.

If Melaka sounds interesting to you, you could also follow the first four days above and then do a day trip to Melaka on the final day of your Singapore Malaysia 5 days itinerary ( find one here ). This is a long day but I have done it myself and it’s very doable.

You can also hire a private taxi here for the day to travel quickly and easily to Malaysia for the day.

Day 6 – Melaka

Melaka's pretty waterfront

Today is all about exploring Melaka’s historic centre and Chinatown before heading to your final stop, Kuala Lumpur, in the evening.

Get your walking legs on! Everything mentioned here is close and, while you can take taxis or trishaws to get around, the attractions are so close together that there is no real need.

  • Start at the Sultanate Palace where you can walk through a replica of the palace of Sultan Mansur Shah who ruled Melaka from 1456 to 1477.
  • Take a photo of Porta de Santiago and explore the ruins of St Paul’s Church.
  • Walk downhill to Stradthuys, the town hall and governor’s residence that dates back to the Dutch in 1650. Trishaws tend to congregate here so you can go on a ride on one if you like.
  • Walk over the river to Chinatown and head to 8 Heeren Street to check out this 18th century Dutch period residence.
  • Next, walk through Chinatown to Baba and Nonya Heritage Centre.
  • By now, you have probably worked up an appetite. Eat some lunch.
  • Finish your Melaka day tour by visiting three temples all close together: Cheng Hoon Temple, Masjid Kampung Kling and Sri Poyatha Venayagar Moorthi Temple.

In the late afternoon, catch your onward bus to Kuala Lumpur. This takes about 2.5 hours and I recommend booking a bus from 3-4pm.

Click here to book it now.

On arrival, check in to your hotel. If you feel like going out, head to the night markets in Petaling Street or Jalan Alor.

You can find our recommend hotels in Kuala Lumpur here.

Where To Stay In Melaka

Luxury: casa del rio melaka .

Located in a premium position just 300 metres from Jonker Street and right by the river, you will find the best option in Melaka, the stunning 5-star luxury boutique hotel, Casa del Rio Melaka Hotel.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 7 Days

Merlion statue fountain in Merlion Park and Singapore city skyline

If you are looking for a 6 nights 7 days Singapore Malaysia itinerary you could stop right here. This does mean that you don’t have much time in Kuala Lumpur. If you would prefer some time in Kuala Lumpur (which I do recommend), drop either Johor Bahur or Melaka, whichever appeals less. It’s easy to get buses from Singapore to Melaka directly or from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur.

You can then pick a day or two from the following three recommmend days in Kuala Lumpur for your Singapore Malaysia itinerary 7 days.

Days 7-9 Kuala Lumpur

tour of malaysia and singapore

Three days in Kuala Lumpur is a great amount of time to get a good taste of this city on your Malaysia Singapore trip.

You can read my full (and detailed) itinerary for 3 days in Kuala Lumpur here.

Singapore Malaysia Itinerary For 10 Days

If you have 10 days, you can add an extra day to Kuala Lumpur using my suggestions in my 3 day itinerary article here .

You could also add an extra day to Singapore if that appeals more or if you want to do an activity there like visit Universal Studios. However, if you are looking for a Singapore Malaysia budget itinerary then the less time in more expensive Singapore, the less you will need to spend so Kuala Lumpur can be a better pick.

Batu Caves

Singapore And Malaysia Trip 10+ Days

If you have more than ten days, yay! There are so many great places that you can add on in Malaysia.

I have a full itinerary document here for Malaysia travel for ten days. This includes travelling to Ipoh, Penang and Langkawi after Kuala Lumpur so you can add one or all of these destinations to the itinerary above to create a plan for up to 17 days.

Click here to download it now.

If you want to visit Thailand as well, you can find itineraries here which include Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand as well as other south east Asia destinations.

Singapore To Malaysia Day Trip

Desaru Coast

If you don’t have time for a big Singapore Malaysia adventure then you may just with to take a one day trip to Malaysia from Singapore. With a timeframe of less than 5 days, this is what I recommend.

This is completely possible and you could spend a 1 day trip to Malaysia from Singapore doing one of the days in the itinerary above to Johor Bahru or Melaka. Just note with Melaka that you will spend a lot of time travelling over the day but it is highly possible – I have done it myself.

Singapore to Malaysia day trip ideas:

  • Legoland Malaysia: The easiest and maybe most fun suggestion is to spend a day at Legoland Malaysia. There are buses directly here from Singapore and it’s a fun and easy place to enjoy. More details here .
  • Johor Bahru: You can catch the local bus over the causeway and explore central Johor Bahru.
  • Melaka: You can either pay for an expensive day tour here (easiest option) or save on your Singapore Malaysia trip cost and take public transport from Singapore to Melaka and back again and explore Melaka on your own, as per day 6 above. The bus takes about four hours each way so buy your ticket in advance and go early.
  • Desaru Coast: This coastal area in Malaysia is just one hour from Singapore with a half-hour ferry ( buy here ) and half-hour shuttle and is perfect if you would like some white sandy beach time or to have some fun visiting attractions such as a huge water park, ostrich, fruit or crocodile farm.

How To Travel From Singapore To Malaysia

tour of malaysia and singapore

Getting from Singapore to Malaysia could really not be easier. There are buses, planes, trains and even taxis across. It’s been streamlined as much as possible because it’s such a popular option with thousands of people doing it all the time.

The easiest way to get across the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia is to hire a private car and driver. These can be quite affordable for a family or small group and you can be picked up and dropped off wherever you like and don’t need to get out of the car at the border.

Click here for more details about hiring a private driver to take you to Malaysia . This starts at just SG$90 for up to 5 people.

You can also get a local taxi but they are less flexible. If you catch a Singaporean taxi, they can only drop you at Larkin Terminal in Johor Bahru. If you catch a Malaysian taxi, they can drop you off anywhere in Malaysia but can only pick you up Queen Street Bus Terminal. They also need to be especially licensed to do this – you can’t just take any taxi.

The cheapest (and still quite easy) way to get across is with public, local bus called the Causeway Bus. Note that with the bus, you will need to get off and back on again at both immigration points in Singapore and Malaysia with all your belongings. Once you are through, you simply wait for the next Causeway Bus to come along. You can catch it from:

  • Kranji MRT (route CW1) from SGD$1.50 (RM1.90 return)
  • Queens Street (route CW2) from SGD$3.50 (RM3.40 return)
  • Newton Circus (route CW5) from SGD$3.30 (RM3.40 return)

The buses stop along the way so you can also hop on elsewhere along the route.

If you need to get between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur then I recommend flying.  This is often a very good price and cuts out the longer journey. For further afield than KL, I also recommend flying.

If you are going across to Johor Bahru, Melaka or anywhere else south of Kuala Lumpur then going overland is the best choice. We can book you a taxi from anywhere in Singapore to anywhere in pensinular Malaysia, and there are direct buses too.

Two Week Traveller

2 Weeks In Singapore and Malaysia

DISCLAIMER: This post might have links to travel services and products that we enjoy. We might make a commission from it at no extra cost to you.

Singapore and Malaysia are close-knitted which makes them good countries to combine when spending 2 weeks in Southeast Asia. These two countries have good border relations, making it easy for tourists from both countries to cross.

Sure, coming from Malaysia, the immigrants at the Singapore immigration border might have more questions than those entering Malaysia from Singapore. But once all that is settled and figured out, a holiday of 2 weeks in Singapore and Malaysia is filled with exciting and very unique vacations.

Singapore offers such a modern experience. It’s filled with skyscrapers, transportation that works so great, and well, expensive hotels and restaurants. After all, it’s the tech hub of Southeast Asia.

While Malaysia offers a highly culture-based experience, although Kuala Lumpur is a metropolitan city, Melaka, Langkawi, and Penang are so diverse – they surely represent a traditional yet welcoming vibe.

I will show you three different itineraries when going on a two-week vacation in Singapore and Malaysia. I will also list things to see, tours to book, accommodations to stay at, and how to get from one place to another.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING

4 IMAGES - petronas twin towers, a long wooden bridge by the shore, marina bay sand, three traditional malaysian bicycles - 2-Weeks In Singapore and Malaysia

I personally believe that Singapore and Malaysia are the two easiest places to visit in Southeast Asia. Unlike its neighbouring countries, in these two destinations, you can actually rent a car and drive on your own.

Here are more travel tips to help you explore Singapore and Malaysia much easier:

When is the best time to go to

In general, it’s very humid and hot in Singapore and Malaysia, while the typhoon season could really affect your itinerary. Weather-wise, the best time to visit Malaysia and Singapore is between November to March. During this time, it’s not too hot and almost no rain.

However, these months are also the busiest, many locals and foreigners are visiting and travelling around which hikes up the prices of hotels, tickets, and flights. In December, there’s Christmas which is a public holiday in both countries. In March-April, you have Ramadan which is also a busy public holiday.

It’s highly recommended to avoid travelling from June until October. During this time, the weather is really unpredictable and most likely raining 90% of the time. 2 weeks in Singapore and Malaysia will be wasted if spent during these months.

April to May can be very dry with no rain at all, even the locals try to not go out too much. While October to November can be a hit and miss but it’s not as bad as the other typhoon months.

Getting around

I love the transportation in these two countries. Both places have amazing public transportation that is very handy. In Singapore, you can easily go from one part of the country to another without leaving the train station (even when you have to do a connection or train change).

Malaysia also has an efficient train, especially in Kuala Lumpur. While the buses from city to city are quite reliable. You can also take domestic flights which are affordable.

Language and currency

Both countries have English as one of their main languages. Malay of course is the most common language in Malaysia while in Singapore, you have Malay, Tamil, and Mandarin Chinese.

Singapore uses the Singaporean Dollar while Malaysia has the Malaysian Ringgit. In both countries, you can pay with bank cards easily, especially in hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls.

Although there are ATMs nearly everywhere, it is still smart to bring cash with you at all times, especially in Malaysia.

Visa and COVID-19 policy

Malaysia probably has one of the friendliest visa policies. Almost everyone is welcome to enjoy a free visa for 14-90 days. Countries in South Asia and China have to apply for an evisa, while a few countries in Africa have to apply through the embassy or consulate.

Singapore also offers visas for free to visitors with a passport from almost anywhere in North and South America, Europe, may Central and South Africa, all of Southeast Asia, some East Asia, and almost all of Oceania for 30 to 90 days.

Malaysia is now open to all travellers. Fully vaccinated tourists must show their COVID-19 vaccination card, if arriving by air, one must present a negative RT-PCR test result taken 48-hours prior to departure. Unvaccinated visitors can also enter but must present a negative test as well. Check this site for more information .

Singapore is only open to full-vaccinated tourists who also have to present a pre-departure RT-PCR test. Read here for more information.

What to pack

Regardless of the season, make sure to bring something that will cover your shoulders and legs (everyone). This is required when entering and visiting sacred places such as pagodas and temples.

We have a free printable packing list and a sample of what you should pack for a 2-week trip .

Other basic travel tips

These websites and travel tools make my travel planning and itinerary writing much easier. I ensure that I book at least the first two nights at my first destination. I also book a car rental in advance to avoid spending too much time at the airport to get one.

2 WEEKS IN SINGAPORE AND MALAYSIA ITINERARY

I will show you three different travel itineraries for Singapore and Malaysia below. If you love big cities, you can use any of them, but itineraries #1 and #3 are my two favourites for beach lovers.

Itinerary #1: Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Langkawi or Perhentian Islands

This itinerary is a good choice because it balances city exploration and beach vacation. If it’s your first time being in these two countries, you definitely have to see Singapore and Kuala Lumpur’s glorious skyscrapers.

After your first week, you can then head to the beach and enjoy Southeast Asia’s stunning white sand beaches and exciting diving and snorkelling spots.

Singapore for 3 days

Whenever in the world you are coming from, it’s best to arrive in Singapore to start off your trip. Since it’s located on the southern tip Malaysian Peninsula, from here, you can make your up to Malaysia.

Singapore is an expensive place, probably similar to the UK, California, New York, and even Scandinavia. A hostel bunkbed will cost about $18/night. If you are on a budget, this is the place you want to book things in advance since the affordable accommodations get booked up fast.

Kuala Lumpur for 3 days

2 images - rocky shore and sunset view of marina bay sands - 2-Weeks In Singapore and Malaysia

To get o Kuala Lumpur, you can either take a 1-hour direct flight or take a 5-hour bus ride. I personally think it’s better to take the bus since you need to arrive at the airport early anyway. On the bus, you have to get off at the border to get an exit stamp from Singapore and an entry stamps to Malaysia then back to the bus.

2 weeks in Singapore and Malaysia have to include Kuala Lumpur. It’s a very unique city. Yes, it’s pretty much covered in skyscrapers but not far from it, you can explore authentic Malaysian culture.

It’s quite easy to visit top attractions in Kuala Lumpur because they have reliable public transportation while the locals speak great English, hence asking for directions or help is very easy.

Penang for 3 days

Penang is about a 4-hour drive north of Kaula Lumpur. You can take a bus, train (which takes about 7 hours), drive, or a direct flight.

Penang is very different from Kuala Lumpur. While you still have some tall buildings, it’s not as many. I like to think that Penang showcase the diverse culture of Malaysia. It’s popular for many things but the most significant are the food, colonial architecture, and street art.

Penang is an island which means you can take a dip on the beach after exploring busy George Town. You can get to most beaches by taking a double-decker bus – something that you have to experience while in Penang.

Perhentian Islands or Langkawi for 4 days

I’m not going to lie, these two places are very different from one another and honestly cannot be compared But if you only have 2 weeks in Singapore and Malaysia, you have to choose which place you want to spend your beach and water activities.

To help you decide, here are some pros and cons:

  • it’s easier to get to Langkawi than Perhentian Islands
  • beaches in Perhentian island are stunning compared to Langkawi
  • Langkawi is a duty-free island making many things much more affordable
  • there is a turtle sanctuary on Perhentian island and you can snorkelling/dive here

To get to Perhentian Islands from Penang, you can easily take a direct flight to either Kelantan or Terengganu. If coming from Langkawi, you have to get to Penang to take those flights.

From both towns (Kelantan or Terengganu), you will need to take a taxi to Besut which is about an hour. Once in Besut, you will take a ferry to Perhentian Islands.

Itinerary #2: Singapore, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Penang

2 images - traditional malay house and green farm - 2-Weeks In Singapore and Malaysia

If you are not a fan of the beach, this itinerary might be suitable for you. Although it still visits Melaka and Penang, which are both near the water, there are many other things you can do there. Both are very culturally-centred cities and have activities that will keep you on your feet.

A lot of flights (from Europe, Oceania, North America, and even Africa) will land or connect in Singapore. This means that you shouldn’t have a hard time finding flights from anywhere in the world.

Although 3-days in Singapore is not that much, since the country has fantastic public transportation, getting from one place to another is very convenient. In 3 days, you can definitely cover all the must-see spots in Singapore.

You can get to Melaka from Singapore by taking a 3.5-hour bus. You will have to get off at the border to get your exit stamp and entry stamp, then get back on the bus to continue your trip.

Melaka for 2 days

Melaka is a great way to take a break from busy and high-tech cities. Melaka is more traditional and is rich in history and culture. One of the best ways to explore the city is by renting a pushbike, this will allow you to explore the town in your own little way.

2-days here are plenty, it will allow you to catch up and process your Singapore adventure while still being able to walk around the city and explore new places. Melaka is not as hectic, if you’re not too interested in seeing some places here, you can spend this time walking aimlessly or checking out local restaurants and cafes.

You can take a bus from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur; there are two options. The journey lasts between 3 to 7 hours depending on which route/bus company you choose. However, if you can afford it, I recommend you rent a car and drive yourself instead or rent a car with a driver for one-way service. This is because you can actually do the trip in less than 3-hours.

What I love about Kuala Lumpur is how the city is filled with skyscrapers, but with only less than an hour’s drive, you will be in this different and unique world. after you scale the Petronas Twin Towers and other amazing spots on top of tall buildings, there are many day trips that you can do from Kuala Lumpur such as climbing the Batu Caves or going hiking in Cameron Highlands.

For your final leg of the trip, you will head to Penang. You can also take a bus there, which is about a 7-hour drive or take a quick half an hour direct flight.

Since this is where your 2 weeks in Singapore and Malaysia vacation will end, I recommend you to take it slow and enjoy the beach. Personally, Penang doesn’t have the best beach in Southeast Asia but it offers something unique.

You can go hiking, join or do your own street art walking tour, try out local street food, and enjoy the beach. Perhaps you can splurge a bit and stay in a resort where you can have tranquillity while reading a book and enjoy a cold drink.

Itinerary #3 Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, Singapore

2 images - cable car view from the top, petronas twin towers - 2-Weeks In Singapore and Malaysia

This last itinerary for 2-weeks in Singapore and Malaysia is a little different than the first one. It is a slower trip. This will actually give you plenty of time to explore all cities without feeling like you had to pack and catch another flight again.

This travel plan allows you to enjoy both big cities and the beach or be around nature. This is also a smart way to explore the two countries. Since you are beginning your trip in Kuala Lumpur and ending it in Singapore, each city’s international airports are massive and busy. Meaning you shouldn’t have a problem finding a flight directly to Kuala Lumpur and a flight home that will leave Singapore and get home with just 1 or even no connection.

Kuala Lumpur for 4 days

Spending 4-days in Kuala Lumpur will include plenty of time to explore both the city and the surrounding areas. Genting Highlands, Krau Wildlife Reserve, and Cameron Highlands are only a bit over an hour away from Kuala Lumpur.

Penang and Langkawi for 5 days

Take a bus or fly to Penang or take a flight to Langkawi, and spend a few days before making your way down to Penang. Both places offer very different experiences. Penang is a busier island while Langkawi is spacious and gives a more island vibe. There are plenty of resorts to choose from, hiking trails, and it’s duty-free.

Both Langkawi and Penang have an airport, regardless of where you go, you can take a direct flight to Singapore.

Singapore for 4 days

Being the last destination of your 2-weeks in Singapore and Malaysia, I recommend you get through your must-see places in Singapore. And on your last day or two, treat yourself by spending time in a luxurious top-floor restaurant where you can have a great view of the city.

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Malaysian breakfast delights stole the limelight at the inaugural Malaysia Travel Escapade 2024, at the Suntec City Mall, from April 12 to 14.

The aroma of nasi lemak and roti canai, as well as the chicken bak kut teh, wafted through the air - attracting visitors who came for a taste of Malaysia’s culinary heritage to the three-day travel fair.

Tourism Malaysia Singapore deputy director Mohana Murni Shanmugam said the Malaysian breakfast culture is chosen as the highlight of this travel fair, in line with the government’s submission to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list

"We are thrilled to highlight Malaysian breakfast culture and give visitors a taste of authentic Malaysia's culinary delights.

"We believe the Malaysian breakfast culture is unique and becoming part and parcel of the country’s heritage, deserving recognition and promotion as we gear up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026," she told Bernama, here, Saturday.

Visitors were also treated to a mesmerising display of live teh tarik demonstrations by ‘Teh Tarik King’ Fakir Mohd Jamal Mohd from Kedah, showcasing the artistry behind Malaysia's iconic pulled tea.

Mohana Murni said this year Malaysia aims to welcome 27.3 million international tourists with 10 million arrivals from Singapore, generating RM102.7 billion in tourism receipts.

She said last year, Singapore ranked as the top source of tourist-generating markets, contributing significantly to 8.3 million arrivals.

The forthcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 has set a target of 35.6 million foreign tourist arrivals, with a target receipt of RM147.1 billion, she added.

The Malaysia Travel Escapade 2024 also offered a glimpse into Malaysia's vibrant culture with a showcase of traditional handicrafts and products including Sarawak’s black pepper, gula apong and coconut sugar, as well as rejuvenating spa services, courtesy of the Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA).

Spa Manja manager Roselyn said among the offer at the fair include a two-hour package worth S$48 for customers of the spa that is located in Johor Bahru.

"Our customers are 50-50 between locals and Singaporeans. Spa is one of the main attractions for Singaporeans when they visit Malaysia. This fair allows us to promote our products and the Malaysian spa experience to Singaporeans and help to increase tourism in Malaysia,” she said. - Bernama

Follow our news, recent searches, calls grow in malaysia for qr code clearance at johor land checkpoints, paving way for passport-free travel, advertisement.

Singapore’s QR code rollout has cut travel time for commuters, who want Malaysia to do the same ahead of the completion of the Rapid Transit System Link and planned Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone.

JOHOR BAHRU: Malaysian IT analyst Sarguneshwara Subramaniam, who commutes between Johor Bahru and Singapore thrice a week, has endured congestion at the land checkpoints for more than a decade.

Traffic at the Woodlands Causeway and Tuas Second Link is particularly heavy at this time of the year, as people mark the Qing Ming festival by visiting their ancestors’ graves as well as celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, he said.

In recent weeks, however, the 44-year-old has been pleasantly surprised.

“With the QR code now (implemented) on the Singapore side, travelling has been way smoother than I expected,” said Mr Subramaniam, who works in Singapore and heads north thrice a week to visit his family.

“There’s no handing over (of) any passports – just scan the QR code and wait for the officers to verify your name and identity."

tour of malaysia and singapore

Since Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) rolled out its QR code initiative on Mar 19 for drivers on its side of the land border, Mr Subramaniam’s average travel time for a one-way trip has shortened to 90 minutes, from around two hours.

It now takes him and his wife less than 40 seconds to drive through Woodlands Checkpoint, instead of around 90 seconds previously.

“We actually monitored the time taken and were quite pleased,” he said.

Another frequent commuter, Singaporean Murphy Lip, has seen his journey times cut from 90 minutes to just an hour these days.

“I notice that it’s particularly good for big groups of people travelling in large cars. With the QR code scanners, it takes between 45 and 50 seconds to clear these groups as the officer does not need to flip through the pages of each passport to verify identity,” added the 41-year-old senior cloud engineer, who lives in Malaysia and travels to Singapore for work every alternate day.

Calls for Malaysia to also implement QR code clearance at its land checkpoints with Singapore have grown louder in the wake of positive user feedback to Singapore’s rollout.

Both countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Jan 11 to develop a framework for a legally binding agreement on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ). A key part of the MOU was exploring passport-free clearance on both sides of the border, and Singapore unilaterally introduced its system last month.

QR code immigration clearance: What you need to know about ICA's new initiative

Johor-Singapore SEZ: Passport-free travel hailed as ‘game-changer’ but observers debate size, scope of proposed zone

Malaysia’s federal government has not made any announcement on passport-free clearance at land checkpoints since, but Johor’s state government and businesses are keen to move things forward.

Johor works, transport, infrastructure and communication committee chairman Mohamad Fazli said that he would be meeting the relevant agencies in Singapore after Hari Raya to look at the QR code initiative, news outlet The Star reported on Tuesday (Apr 9).

“We want to see whether the implementation has been successful or not,” Mr Fazli reportedly said.

“I will compile all the related information and have a discussion with our Immigration director-general after that,” he added.

CNA has asked the Johor immigration department if there are plans to develop passport-free immigration clearance in the short term, ahead of further discussions for the planned SEZ.

“IT MUST BE DONE NOW”

Mr Andrew Chen, Johor state assemblyman for the Stulang constituency – an area adjacent to the Johor Bahru immigration complex – told CNA it is imperative that Malaysia begins to implement a passport-free clearance system as soon as possible. This would signal the Malaysian government's commitment to the terms of the SEZ, he said.

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) politician explained that Malaysia may not necessarily implement a QR code system like Singapore's, but should consider options such as facial recognition biometric clearance or other methods that would allow passport-free travel when the SEZ comes to fruition.

DAP is part of the Pakatan Harapan coalition and unity government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“It is very important that these systems are put in place soon. The agreement to one day implement passport-free travel is there, and Malaysia will honour it,” said Mr Chen, who led a state task force between 2018 and 2020 to ease congestion at the Causeway.

“Smooth traffic flow of people is especially important for the SEZ to be fruitful and for the Malaysian economy to benefit from this bilateral initiative. But it must be done now, ahead of further discussions in regards to the SEZ,” he added.

The authorities should also look at a system – similar to the one to be implemented for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link – where travellers only need to clear immigration once, suggested Mr Chen.

tour of malaysia and singapore

The RTS Link is slated to be completed by end-2026. And while no date has been set for the SEZ, Mr Samuel Tan, executive director of KGV International Property Consultants in Johor, expects the project to boost the number of travellers passing through the land checkpoints to more than half a million a day, up from over 400,000 currently.

The Malaysian government should make QR code clearance a “top priority” to avoid a “bottleneck for commuters”, said Mr Tan.

IS MALAYSIA READY?

But Ms Christina Karl, global immigration leader at Deloitte, noted that Malaysia may be at a different stage from Singapore in the process.

“When considering the implementation of initiatives such as QR code clearance at land and/or air checkpoints, it is crucial to acknowledge and respect the sovereignty of each nation and understand that they may have different priorities, resources and levels of technological readiness,” she said.

“Adopting new technologies can vary significantly based on infrastructure, investment priorities, regulatory frameworks and political considerations, and the number of neighbouring countries which these changes may impact,” said Ms Karl.

That said, she agreed QR code clearance has increased convenience for travellers at Singapore’s land checkpoints. “Removing the human element from the process also allows for increased accuracy and an additional security layer which comes hand in hand with this technology,” she said.

Globally, border control is becoming more seamless, Ms Karl noted.

Travellers have been free to move between 26 countries in the Schengen area in Europe without the need for passport checks at the borders since 1995. This includes nations like Germany, Belgium, France, as well as non-European Union countries Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

The United Arab Emirates is also set to implement facial recognition at its borders and remove the need to produce a passport at the port of entry.

“The global landscape is evolving rapidly and advancements in technology and societies’ expectations are driving transformations in border control,” said Ms Karl.

Mr Teh Kee Sin, advisor to the South Johor Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME) Association, acknowledged the Malaysian government will have to put in place infrastructure such as QR code scanners and a centralised app, as well as train immigration officers.

This would take time, he said, but would pay off in reducing congestion and commute times.

tour of malaysia and singapore

“Imagine a time in the near future where we do not need to carry our passports in hand to cross the border into Singapore,” said Mr Teh.

For Mr Subramaniam, precious minutes shaved off per trip add up to countless hours saved by users of the Causeway and Second Link each day.

20 FUN and Interesting Facts About Singapore

Singapore is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but did you also know that it’s only made up of one city?

The whole nation is full of interesting, amazing facts that astonish every traveler who visits Singapore. I couldn’t believe some of the unique laws the country has, or how they keep the cars so modern!

These 20 fun and interesting facts about Singapore will help you ace some bar trivia and learn more about the nation before you visit.

Keep reading to discover the amazing secrets of Singapore!

10 Fun & Interesting Facts about Singapore

One of my favorite parts of travel is discovering interesting facts about the countries I visit. They make for great trivia later and ensure I never have a dull moment at a cocktail party.

If you’re looking for some fun facts about Singapore, check out my top 10 favorites!

They’ll prepare you for visiting Singapore and make you an expert at your next dinner party.

1. Singapore is 1 of 3 city-states in the world.

A city-state is a sovereign state centered around one city. There are only 3 modern, independent city-states in the world. The other 2 are Monaco and Vatican City . Because of it’s small size it is easy to explore Singapore in 2-3 days .

While places like Hong Kong and Macau are autonomous cities, as well, with independent governments, they are still considered to be a part of the larger nation of China and are not official city-states.

Singapore is unique among the city-states in that it is actually composed of over 60 small islands , most of which are uninhabited.

2. 23% of the country is reclaimed land.

Reclaimed land is an area that is created by filling in oceans, seas, lakes, or swamplands to expand the amount of useable land. Roughly 130 km2 of the 722.5km2 area of the city-state of Singapore is built on reclaimed land.

This land was reclaimed by extending into the waterfront. A significant portion of Singapore’s now booming downtown didn’t exist even a few decades ago .

They plan to grow the country to 766km2 by 2030.

This expansion is part of their 50-year plan to revitalize the city-state.

In the 1960s, Singapore was a slum town filled with dirt and disease. Now, they are a thriving nation with an impressive international economic presence. Much of the “iconic” features of the country didn’t even exist 20 years ago. For example, the Marina Bay Sands was only built in 2010.

I’m genuinely in awe of this interesting Singapore fact – and that they’re pulling it off!

3. From 1942-1945, Singapore didn’t exist.

During World War 2, the Japanese occupied Singapore and renamed the city-state. It became known as Syonan-to, or “Bright Southern Island”. They even changed Singapore to share the Japanese time zone.

This occupation brought on racial massacres and high tensions.

The British forces helped liberate Singapore in 1945.

It’s one of the only countries I’ve ever heard of with a fascinating fact involving its temporary dissolution!

4. Singapore imports drinking water from Malaysia.

Although it is surrounded by water, Singapore doesn’t have a supply of drinkable water. They have to import their drinking water from Malaysia.

The city-state is hoping to change this with their 50-year plan.

Marina Bay is being converted into a source of freshwater so the city will have its own source. Desalinated water, reservoirs, and rain catchments will reduce Singapore’s reliance on Malaysia and give them access to their own water in case of a crisis.

This will hopefully also cut down on the necessity of bottled water purchases, making the country even more sustainable and “green” than it already is.

5. Although Singapore helped create Malaysia, it is not a part of it.

Singapore was initially part of the formation of Malaysia. After realizing the racial imbalance built into treaties, which would devalue many of the city-state’s citizens, they opted for sovereignty.

People still mistakenly lump it in with Malaysia, or sometimes even China.

6. Singapore means the “lion city.”

A prince from Palembang, Indonesia visited the city-state and thought he saw a lion on the banks. He called the land Singapura or “lion city” in Sanskrit . It’s unclear what he saw, since lions have never lived wild in Singapore . Perhaps it was a Malaysian tiger.

The lion makes up half of Singapore’s emblematic Merlion, which is half lion, half fish. The mermaid half represents the city’s origin as a fishing town.

This is one of those fun facts about Singapore that basically means the city-state’s name is misleading!

7. 80% of Singaporeans live in government housing.

This is one of the interesting Singapore facts that might seem insane considering how financially successful the country appears. The system, which created subsidized housing built and managed by the government originally began as a way to combat Singapore’s slums .

Now, there are government housing neighborhoods entirely composed of these flats. These flats are well built and affordable.

Once you turn 30 or get married, you can be entered into a lottery to get into public housing. Otherwise, you have to buy private property which can be extremely expensive.

With public housing, you get a 99-year lease. This contributes to Singapore’s 93% homeownership rate – the highest in the world.

8. Cars can’t be more than 10 years old.

To own a car in Singapore, you have to buy a permit. The permits are only valid for 10 years. You can pay to extend it for a high price, or give away your car and buy a new one to get a new permit.

This keeps Singapore’s roads clear of clunky, broken-down cars. It also lends to the wealthy look of the city-state with all of the sleek, new cars driving around.

You’ll often see some of the fanciest cars in the world driving the Singaporean streets. It’s not just a lie or stereotype depicted in Crazy Rich Asians , it’s actually one of the most interesting facts about Singapore.

9. Singapore has some crazy laws.

Everyone knows the story that spitting gum on the sidewalk in Singapore will get you a fine. What you may not know is that gum is actually illegal in Singapore . You can only get it with a prescription. (What kind of disease means you need gum?!)

There is also a law against peeing in elevators . Elevators in Singapore will stop if they detect urine and hold the culprit until the police arrive. (How often were people peeing in elevators before?!)

Additionally, vomiting in public or drinking and eating on the metro will result in substantial fines. With so many laws resulting in fines, Singapore has been coined the “Fine City” – a nod to both its high quality and it’s crazy laws that will hit you in the pocketbook.

Speaking of hitting, somehow caning is still a legal punishment in this modern city-state. Be careful what rules you break or you might end up with a very sore bottom!

The craziest of laws (in my eyes anyway) is that being gay is illegal in Singapore. I won’t delve into the politics, but it does feel like this law belongs on this list with the other ridiculous laws in the country.

10. Singapore has one of the highest percentage of millionaires in the world.

One out of every 6 households in Singapore has at least $1 million USD of liquid wealth. This is partially due to the economic property of the country in recent years. Many citizens have been able to capitalize on the working conditions.

It is also due to the fact that Singapore is a popular tax haven . Many millionaires choose to settle in Singapore because of its low tax rates, which raises the country’s percentage.

Although it has a large number of millionaires, Singapore actually has one of the highest income inequalities in the developed world.

They don’t have a minimum wage. The large number of foreign workers they hire can’t even afford their public housing and often have to live in what are essentially shipping containers outside the city.

Great Eastern Selects Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer to Meet Increased Customer Demand

Singapore and Malaysia’s largest life insurance group harnesses the power of cloud to improve user experience for its customers and agency force

Great Eastern Selects Oracle Exadata Cloud

Great Eastern , the largest and most established life insurance group in Singapore and Malaysia, has migrated over 200 terabytes of data from 300 on-premises Oracle databases to Oracle Autonomous Database on Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer in their data centers. By moving its databases, including financial product management systems, distributed commission management systems and rewards systems, onto a single integrated cloud platform, Great Eastern has automated its workloads and improved operational efficiency.

Founded in 1908, Great Eastern has over S$100 billion in assets and more than 16 million policyholders. To support the significant growth in its customer base over the past year, the life insurance group needed to modernize and automate its disparate on-premises database systems for improved scalability and enhanced performance while meeting stringent regulatory requirements. Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer brings enhanced performance, automation, and scalability to Great Eastern, simplifying its end-to-end data management. It thereby enables the company’s customers and financial representatives to have uninterrupted access to the platform anytime, with efficient performance, and in a more secure environment. Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer, delivered as a cloud service in its own data centers helps Great Eastern address data locality and compliance requirements.

Gary Teh, managing director, Group IT, Great Eastern said, “We remain steadfast in our commitment to improving customer experience with product innovation to support the changing wealth and protection requirements of our customers across the region. This involves optimizing customer journeys through redesigned processes, harnessing our digitized assets, and leveraging advanced cloud capabilities. Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer has enabled us to provide an efficient and more reliable platform resulting in better user experience for our customers and financial representatives.”

“The life insurance sector is increasingly leveraging technology to innovate, enhance consumer experiences, and boost operational efficiencies, ultimately improving individual protection and financial well-being,” said Chin Ying Loong, regional managing director, ASEAN & South Asia Growing Economies (SAGE), Oracle. “With Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer, Great Eastern can enjoy the flexibility and economic benefits of cloud in its own data centers, while helping to meet local regulatory requirements. This cloud migration strengthens Great Eastern’s operations, powering them to stay at the forefront of Asia’s insurance industry.”
