Gambling is one of the most popular activities on a cruise ship. Whether you are just trying your luck or an avid poker player, cruise ship casinos offer a little of something for everyone.

Nearly every cruise ship offers a casino. But before you play, there are some essential things to know.

While cruise ship casinos share many similarities with land-based gaming centers, there are some essential differences.

From game selection to payouts, we’ll cover everything you need to know about cruise ship casinos.

Table of Contents

What to Expect from Cruise Ship Casinos?

Casino Royale onboard Ovation of the Seas

Cruise ship casinos closely resemble those found on land.

Many are styled after those found in Las Vegas or Atlantic City.

You’ll be greeted by flashing lights, dinging bells, cards shuffling, and drinks clinking when walking into the casino.

Each cruise ship has a different look and feels for its casino. Some provide a contemporary atmosphere, while others add a bit more creativity with Egyptian or Roman themes.

Walking around the casino feels a little claustrophobic. With limited space, cruise ships try to cram as many tables and slot machines as possible into the small area. But, once you find a seat, you won’t even notice.

What Are the Payouts?

Interior of the casino on large cruise ship Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Conquest

In every casino, the odds always favor the house. And that’s is especially true at sea.

Payouts on cruise ships are far lower than on land.

On land, video poker games pay 9/6, or nine credits for a full house and six for a flush. But on a cruise ship, the payouts are lowered to 6/5.

For blackjack, it’s common to find that tables pay 6-to-5 instead of the usual 3-to-2.

Poker players will also be disappointed to find tables with a high rake (the “fee” paid by the winner to the house after each hand).

Because of the high rake, most poker players avoid cash games on cruise ships. It’s rare to find a cash game, even rarer to see a full table.

But thankfully, there are poker tournaments that offer lower fees to play (more on that later).

Gambling Age on a Cruise Ship

Casino Royal on Serenade of the Seas taken during our 2022 cruise to Alaska

On a cruise ship, the minimum gambling age is 18.

While the minimum age in most states is 21, cruise ship casinos often operate in international waters, which allows them to lower the gambling age to eighteen.

However, cruises to Alaska require passengers to be at least 21 years of age to gamble.

Cruise Ship Casino Games

Slot machines at the casino on Scarlet Lady

On a cruise ship, you’ll find plenty of traditional games, including:

  • Texas Hold ’em
  • Video Poker
  • Three Card Poker
  • “Skill Crane”
  • Coin Pusher (with quarters instead of tokens)

Despite the small size of the casinos, cruise ships offer a surprisingly wide range of games.

You’ll always find popular games like blackjack, roulette, and slots.

Many cruise lines also feature games not found on land. For example, the coin pusher is exactly like the arcade machines, but with quarters instead of tokens. Try your best to push the quarters over the edge and maybe a bill or two.

The “Skill Crane” puts a twist on a long-time favorite where you try to line up a key to its hole. If you’re successful, the key will pass through the hole, pushing over a stack of bills.

Casino Minimums for Table Games and Slot Machines

Cruise ship casinos offer plenty of low-stakes games with minimums of less than $5.

You’ll always find plenty of penny slot machines and table games starting at $5.

Which Cruise Lines Have Casinos?

Cruise Ship Casinos

Nearly every major cruise line offers casinos onboard their ships.

Mainstream cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, and Costa Cruises have casinos onboard their vessels.

The only major brand that doesn’t offer casinos is Disney Cruise Line. Disney caters primarily to families and young kids, and you won’t find a casino on their vessels.

The other exception is Norwegian’s  Pride of America  cruise ship. The vessel sails year-round to Hawaii and is one of the only major cruise ships without a casino.

You’ll often find the casino in the middle of the ship, near the promenade or atrium.

Casino Hours of Operation

The Blackjack Table on Scarlet Lady. Blackjack on cruise ships have lower payouts of 6 to 5 rather than the usual 3 to 2.

Depending on the cruise ship’s location, the onboard casino may be regulated by several agencies.

Cruise lines follow a simple rule:  the casino is open while the ship is sailing.

When the ship is docked at the port, the casino is closed. It only opens later at night once the vessel has set sail, having left the port country’s jurisdiction.

As a rule, when the cruise ship is within three to twelve miles of the coastline, it will close the casino to comply with local gambling regulations.

However, there are two significant exceptions:

  • In Alaska, cruise ship casinos are permitted to open 3 miles after leaving port and must close three miles before reaching the next port of call.
  • The casino can remain open in countries with more relaxed gambling laws (such as Malta and Bermuda).

On sea days, the casino will be open most of the day. While the casino is available during the daytime, the table games might not be staffed during non-peak hours (early morning).

But there are always slot games and video poker while you wait.

Cruise Casino Loyalty Programs

A row of slot machines in the casino of the cruise ship Norwegian Gem

Most cruise lines offer casino loyalty programs. You’ll earn points when you play, which can be redeemed for drinks, discounts, and future cruises.

Smoking in the Casino

Smoking rules vary by cruise line, but you’ll find that most cruise ships permit smoking , at least in a small section of the casino.

Although smoking might be allowed, we generally find that the smoke smell isn’t overwhelming. But, if you’re sensitive to smoke, you might not feel comfortable gambling on a cruise ship. Even when smoking is reserved for a small section, the tiny casino means it’s hard to get away from the smell.

Tournaments

The WPT Poker Room on Scarlet Lady is home to several tournamets during sailing

You might find poker, blackjack, and slot tournaments during the cruise.

The tournaments usually occur on sea days during off-peak times (late morning or early afternoon.)

The tournaments are fun because they allow guests to win a large amount of money while only risking a small entry fee.

For poker players, tournaments are the best chance of winning any money at the tables. The cash game rake eats away so much money that most poker players avoid cash games at all costs.

Unlike cash games, there’s no rake in a poker tournament. For a small fee, players have a chance at winning a large pot of money or a free cruise.

Beginner Classes

Cruise ships provide an excellent place for beginners to learn in a comfortable environment. The casino staff is there to make sure guests have an enjoyable time. Their more than happy to assist if you’re new to a game.

Most casinos offer gaming lessons on the first few days of the cruise. During the class, a dealer will explain the game’s rules, basic strategy, and table etiquette.

Best of all, it doesn’t cost any money to learn.

The classes are great because they provide a quiet place to learn before real money games begin.

Cruise Ship Casino FAQs

Are drinks free in the casino.

Unlike land-based casinos, cruise ships don’t offer free drinks while you play.

You won’t need to go too far to find a bar. Cruise ship casinos have bars in the center or near the front of the venue.

Are There ATMs on the Ship?

No, while casino hours vary, the casino is usually open when the ship is at sea. The casino may open when docked at a port country that allows cruise casinos to operate, such as Malta and Bermuda. While at sea, the ship’s casino may stay open until 2 or 3 in the morning. And reopen around 11:00 am on sea days.

Are There Taxes on Casino Winnings?

There are taxes on casino winnings. All U.S. citizens must report casino winnings to the IRS regardless of where the winnings occur.

If you win $1,200 or more or win a table game with odds of 300-to-1, the cruise line will issue a W-2G form. A copy of the form is sent to the IRS and another to the winner.

Additionally, some cruise ship casinos will provide the option to have the taxes deducted from your winnings. Or, you can take the total amount and pay the taxes on your own.

Do Disney Cruise Ships Have a Casino?

Disney Cruise Line is the only mainstream cruise line that  does not  have casinos on its cruise ships.  Disney is best known for their family-friendly cruise vacations. You won’t find a casino on any vessel in their fleet.

how do I find out what lines pay 3/2 for a blackjack?

Some cruise lines offer the usual 3-2 payout for Blackjack, but only on the higher priced tables, usually $25 per hand or more. Princess Cruises and Carnival Cruises are two cruise lines that pay 3 to 2 at higher stakes tables.

What to Expect on Cruise Ship Casinos

cruise ship casino age

Will there be a casino on my cruise ship?

Casino Royale on Harmony of the Seas (Photo: Cruise Critic)

That depends on which cruise line you've chosen. Most large cruise ships, and even some of the smaller ones will have an onboard casino. The major exception to the big ship rule is Disney Cruise Line, which does not have a casino on any of its four cruise ships. Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America also does not have a casino. Most expedition ships and river boats do not have casinos. Viking is a line that has made a point not to have casinos on any of its ships, regardless of type.

What types of machines and/or tables will I find in the casino?

All cruise ship casinos have numerous slot machine options, and most have table games as well, including blackjack and a variety of poker games (Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Caribbean Stud, Three Card, Let It Ride) that you play against the dealer. For Texas Hold'em played against other players, some ships will have dealer-dealt tables (Norwegian Cruise Line, most Royal Caribbean ships), while others will use electronic Poker Pro tables (Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises). Still other ships will not offer Texas Hold'em at all; Silversea doesn't offer poker of any variety. There's usually also at least one roulette table and one craps table, and a rare few will have Baccarat.

Are there penny slots in a cruise ship casino?

Yes, every cruise ship casino has penny slots. But they offer so many variations of ways to win that, at 1 cent per variation, your 1 cent bet can easily end up costing you more than $2 a go.

Are there high stakes tables in a cruise ship casino?

Nieuw Amsterdam Casino (Photo: Holland America)

Very few cruise ships offer truly high stakes gambling. On some ships, like select Royal Caribbean ships, if enough high rollers want to play a high stakes game, the pit boss may arrange a game. But for the most part, tables are limited.

Are there poker, blackjack or slot tournaments in the casino?

Most cruise ships with a casino will offer tournaments of some kind. Most common are slot and blackjack. Most tournaments are buy-ins where you pay a certain amount to enter and then don't actually spend money during the tournament. Some cruise lines allow you to rebuy during blackjack and poker tournaments, so winners tend to be whichever player is willing to continually rebuy. Winners of tournaments typically win money but on some ships, namely Royal Caribbean, winners of the Texas Hold'em tournament are also eligible to receive a free cruise for two on which the final Royal Poker Tournament is held, for which a prize pool of $100,000 is guaranteed.

Is the cruise ship casino open 24/7?

No. Cruise ship casinos are only open when the ship is out to sea or in port in a select few countries where gambling is permitted (at least on the cruise ship), such as Bermuda and Malta. On some cruise ships, casinos are also closed during the day -- even when the ship is out to sea because cruise lines know most people are doing other things during daylight hours. Night hours vary, but cruise ship casinos tend to stay open until 2 or 3 a.m. Always check your daily cruise schedule for the day's casino hours.

What is the minimum age to play or hang out in the casino?

Slot Machine (Photo: Carnival)

On most cruise ships, the minimum age to be in the casino is 18. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara raise that age to 21 on sailings in Alaska, while MSC raises it to 21 in the Caribbean. Princess Cruises, Windstar and Seabourn Cruises are among the few lines that require passengers to be 21 in the casinos on all sailings. In many cases, casinos are located along main thoroughfares, so kids will be walking through although they're not supposed to linger. If you wish to gamble, but think you might be too young, check with your travel agent or the cruise line before booking.

Can I use cash in the casino, or is everything charged on my cruise card?

On most cruises, you'll be able to use both cash and your cruise card . At the tables, your cash will be turned into chips or you can charge the price of the chips on your cruise card. Most slot machines will just take your cruise card, but some will also take cash. Very few cruise ship casinos are cash-only but a few do exist. (Windstar and Silversea are examples.) Though most big ships will have an ATM, the fee to withdraw money is usually pretty high; bring some bills if you're unsure of how the casino on your chosen ship works.

Are drinks free in a cruise ship casino the same way they are in a land casino?

Drinks are only free in casinos on ships where drinks are always free, such as luxury lines including Crystal, Silversea and Regent. On most ships, you'll have to pay for your drinks just like you do at the bar or in the dining room. Pit bosses do have the authority to buy a round for the table a couple of times a night, so make friends with the pit boss if you can. If you're a member of a cruise ship's casino loyalty program and have racked up enough points, you might earn free drinks but most programs require you to bet a significant amount of money before all drinks are on the house.

Is there a casino loyalty club through which I can earn points and perks?

Norwegian Sky Casino (Photo: Norwegian)

Most big ship casinos offer a loyalty program that is separate from the general cruise line loyalty program . As you bet money, you earn points toward rewards, usually free drinks and cruise sailings. You have to bet a lot of money to rack up a significant number of points, so don't gamble in the casino just to try and earn rewards; you'll end up spending more money than the reward is worth. The rewards you earn on one cruise ship do not always transfer to another ship, even within the same fleet. If earning casino points on multiple cruise ships is important to you, check with the cruise line ahead of time to get specific rules of the casino loyalty program.

Can I smoke in the casino?

Again, this depends on the cruise line. Most of the big ships allow smoking in the casino; some, like Carnival, have smoke-free sections (Norwegian Bliss is also the only Norwegian ship whose casino has a separate room for smokers). Ships that do not permit smoking in the casino at all include Celebrity, Crystal, Cunard, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea and Windstar. Find out more about cruise ship smoking policies.

Here's What You Need To Know Before Hitting The Cruise Ship's Casino

gambling at a table

There's no reason you can't play your favorite games on the high seas. Most cruise ships have onboard casinos, complete with slot machines and table games. It's worth noting that Disney Cruise Line doesn't have casinos, so if that's a priority to you while vacationing, skip Disney. Viking Cruises also don't offer casinos.

Even if you don't normally go to casinos, the venues on cruise ships can be a tempting offer during nights when the ship is out at sea and you're looking for something fun to do. This is especially true if you book an extra-long cruise , which can be great, but 50 to 200 days of vacation might require some slot machines or roulette to break up the experience. There are lots of perks to having a casino to escape to. But cruise ship casinos are different from regular casinos, so before you pack your bingo daubers and your lucky bracelet, note what changes you can expect to find.

When you can gamble at a cruise ship's casino

Cruise ship casinos are usually not open 24 hours a day. When cruises are at a port of call, the ship generally closes its casino to abide by local laws. However, once on international waters, the casinos are free to operate. Depending on the cruise company, the casino might open as early as 11 a.m. or open in the evenings only. The cruise ship will have a daily schedule posted and this will include casino hours.

Like many land casinos, some cruise ship casinos still allow smoking in designated areas. For example, Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line allow smoking in specific areas while offering smoke-free areas for other gamblers. However, it also depends on what the departure country was for the cruise. For example, for Royal Caribbean , if the cruise departed from Australia or the United Kingdom, smoking is not allowed in the casino.

In terms of drinks, cruise casinos offer luxury bars so that you can drink and gamble at the same time. According to The Points Guy , luxury cruises like Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, and Seabourn offer free drinks for the entirety of the cruise voyage, so drinks are likewise free in the casino. Most other cruises offer free drinks if you join their loyalty programs and earn enough points. For example, Carnival has a drinks program called Drinks On Us!  Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has a club called Club Royale that gives its members complimentary drinks.

What you can expect to play

Cruise ship casinos offer your typical array of games. There are slot machines, including penny slots, and most offer table games. You can expect to be able to play blackjack, roulette, and craps. Games may vary depending on the ship. For example Royal Caribbean also offers baccarat, three card poker, and Ultimate Texas Hold'em. Some cruise casinos will offer high-stakes gambling if enough players want to participate, but don't count on this. Some lines like Carnival have prize games as well as scratch cards. Many, like Holland America Line, also offer bingo.

Tournaments are common in cruise casinos. They'll likely have slot tournaments, as well as blackjack and Texas hold 'em tournaments. While certain cruise casinos have live poker games, many others offer video poker, while some offer both options. Prizes can be very creative too. For instance, on a Royal Caribbean cruise, winners may get a cruise for two plus a chance to enter the final poker tournament, with a prize of $100,000.

Complications regarding cruise casinos

The age restriction on cruises varies depending on the country of departure and the general destination area. For example, guests typically have to be 18 or older to play, but when cruises are in Alaska, they follow the United States' age limit of 21. However, certain cruises like MSC Cruises have an age limit of 21 if the ship is in a U.S. port.

In terms of money, you can use both cash and a cruise card while at the casino. However, there can also be a service fee attached to certain transactions. Typically, this is around 3%. It's worth being aware that it may be difficult to cash out on some cruise casinos. You must cash out by the last night of your cruise and be mindful that the casino may not be open the next morning. However, there is a chance to win real money on a cruise, so there's a chance for some fun and some winnings.

Can You Gamble on a Cruise at 18? Cruise Line Gambling Guide

If you are taking a cruise, you may be wondering how old you need to be to gamble in the onboard casino or play games like Bingo.

The age restrictions can vary by cruise line and destination and – doesn’t always follow the regulations of the country that the cruise ship is visiting.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Gamble On A Cruise?

On most mainstream cruise lines, guests must be 18 to gamble in the casino or take part in gambling in the form of Bingo.

Some cruise lines increase this age to 21 when cruising in certain places such as Alaska – or more generally in US waters.

MSC Preziosa casino

Where do the gambling age restrictions apply?

  • Slot Machines
  • Table Games
  • Bingo or other similar games
  • Shows like “Deal or No Deal” where the prize is money

American Cruise Lines

The majority of US cruise lines have 18 as the gambling age.

In most US states the gambling age is 21 – although some states do allow 18-year-olds to gamble.

Alaska has a gambling age of 21, and Alaskan cruises often adopt the 21+ gambling restriction.

The busiest cruise ship casino I have EVER seen was onboard Carnival Magic. I was stunned by how busy it was! Find out all about that very American cruise in this video:

British Cruise Lines

All British cruise lines have 18 as their gambling age.

Cunard does increase this to 21 when cruising in US waters.

To learn more about the casinos on Cunard Cruises, check out the post below:

Inside a Cunard Cruise Ship Casino – Games, Tables, and Smoking Policy

European Cruise Lines

Similarly, European cruise lines also have a gambling age of 18.

MSC and Costa are based in Italy, which has a gambling age of 18.

Both usually have an 18 gambling age on their cruise ships, with MSC increasing this to 21 in US waters.

Celestyal Cruises are based in Greece which has a gambling age of 21, but the gambling age on the ship is only 18.

This is similar to the way that a lot of US lines have a gambling age of 18, but many states require gamblers to be 21.

AIDA and TUI cruises are both based in Germany where the gambling age is 18.

Norwegian Encore Casino

Luxury Cruise Lines

There are a couple of luxury cruise lines where the gambling age onboard is 21.

Windstar and Seabourn Cruises both have this regulation in place.

When is the Casino Open on a Cruise?

Cruise ship casinos are only open when the cruise ship is out to sea.

Due to various restrictions and taxes, cruise line casinos are closed when the ship is in port.

The opening times of the casino will vary from day to day, depending on how long the ship spends docked.

The distance that the ship has to be from land to open the casino does vary, but in the US this is usually 12 miles.

norwegian sun casino roulette slot machines

To find out when the casino is open guests can check their daily schedule. which is delivered to the room each night or check the cruise line app if the cruise line has one.

The opening times will also usually be shown on a board in the casino.

You don’t need to buy the cruise line WiFi to use the cruise line App on your phone. Find out why here:

You Don’t Need to Pay For Wi-Fi To Use a Cruise Line App – Here’s Why

What Restrictions are in Place to Stop Underage Guests Gambling?

Many cruise lines do not allow anybody under the gambling age to be in the casino when the casino is open.

If this is the case and the cruise line suspected a guest of being under the gambling age onboard, they would be asked to leave.

On a cruise, cash is rarely used and the majority of gambling is done using the guest’s onboard cruise account.

The age of the passenger is recorded within the cruise account and as a result, the cruise card of an underage passenger wouldn’t work in the casino.

On many cruise lines, guests have a virtual casino account, where they load money to spend in the casino. An underage guest may not have this virtual casino account.

Could a Guest Gamble With Another Passenger’s Cruise Card?

In theory, a guest may be able to do this but the cruise line would treat this as a serious offense.

It is against the law for the cruise line to allow underage gambling and as a result, the cruise line would be within their rights to remove the guest (and their guardians) from the cruise.

Guests caught trying to gamble underage may also be banned from the cruise line.

Answered: How Old Do You Have to Be to Gamble on a Cruise?

Headed out on a cruise with some young adults in tow? Or maybe you are taking a Spring Break cruise while in college and not sure if you’re allowed to play blackjack while on the ship.

No matter the reason, it’s a good question to ask how old do you have to be to gamble in a cruise ship casino. After all, once the ship goes into international waters, there aren’t many laws, right?

Well, not so fast.

Let’s answer the pressing question first. For most cruises, you need only be 18 years old to gamble in the ship’s casino . This includes the major cruise lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines .

Eighteen years old is a full three years younger than what’s allowed in casinos in the United States — including Las Vegas. So if you’re a young adult that really has the itch to gamble, play poker, or throw the dice, then a cruise ship is the only place we know of that allows you to do so legally at 18 years old.

That doesn’t mean you should set up a gambling junket on a cruise ship just yet. There are a few more things to know about cruise ship gambling.

Slot machines on a cruise

First, Royal Caribbean puts an age limit of 21 on casino gambling if you are taking an Alaskan cruise . So if you’re headed to the northwest United States, being under 21 will mean no gambling aboard the ship.

As well, gambling is not allowed until the ship is well away from shore due to local, land-based laws while in port. While the statutes will vary by location, don’t think you’ll just be able to hop aboard and start playing slots. It usually takes an hour or two of sailing before the ship is far enough from land to open the casino.

Finally, you should know that cruise ship casinos are well known for having poor payouts. With a captive audience aboard the ship and no other casino around, there isn’t much of an incentive for them to be loose on the payouts. Expect blackjack to pay 6-to-5 (compared to the more favorable 3-to-2 found on land) and low limits on odds bets for craps.

There is normally no tax withheld on slot jackpots if the winner can provide a valid Social Security Number. If you are unable to provide a valid Social Security Number, however, we are required to withhold taxes at a rate of 29%. All table game payouts subject to tax reporting are also subject to withholding at a rate of 26% (29% if a valid Social Security Number cannot be provided). Cruise ship casinos: Everything you need to know about gambling at sea

Melinda Crow

Cruise ship casino gambling is a big deal to some cruisers. You know how you often hear people on a cruise ship planning their day around the entertainment, tours and mealtimes? Last night, I eavesdropped on a conversation where a group of six people was planning their entire next day around time in the ship's casino.

For other cruisers, the casino is more of an onboard curiosity than anything else. What are all those table games? Do people actually win money — or free cruises — playing in cruise ship casinos?

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're curious, I've compiled answers to the most common questions people ask about cruise ship casinos. Some of the answers may surprise you.

Do all cruise ships have casinos?

cruise ship casino age

Most large, mainstream cruise ships have casinos, including the ships of Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Holland America, Norwegian Cruise Line (other than Pride of America), Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Virgin Voyages.

Specialty cruise lines like Disney Cruise Line, Paul Gauguin and most expedition cruise ships do not have casinos. Premium cruise lines Oceania Cruises and Cunard have casinos, while Viking, Azamara and Windstar Cruises do not. (Windstar and Azamara actually removed casinos from their ships and repurposed the space.)

Among the luxury cruise lines, Silversea and Seabourn have casinos on their non-expedition ships; Regent Seven Seas has casinos on all its ships. Smaller luxury ships like those belonging to Ponant, Ritz-Carlton, Scenic and Emerald do not have casinos. River cruise lines do not have casinos on board, even on U.S. rivers where "riverboat" gambling is reserved for casino boats, not river cruise ships.

Are cruise casinos open in port?

With a few exceptions, cruise casinos are not open while ships are in port. They are generally limited to operating while the ship is in international waters. This is why Norwegian's Pride of America doesn't have a casino. Since the ship cruises exclusively in Hawaii, it never leaves U.S. waters.

Cruisers are also often surprised to learn that the casino is closed on some nights during Alaska cruises . Cruises that sail from Victoria, British Columbia, to Seattle on the final night are a good example. The ship goes straight from Canadian waters to U.S. waters without ever reaching international open waters, so the casino closes the night before arrival in Victoria and does not reopen during the cruise.

Ports that currently allow the cruise lines to operate their casinos while the ship is in port include Bermuda and Malta, which require cruise lines to apply for a gaming license. Bermuda has allowed casino operations for licensed ships between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. since 2013. It's an ideal situation as Bermuda has no land-based casinos, and many cruise ships overnight in port on Bermuda cruises. Malta, which does have land-based casinos, allows ships that have been approved for licenses to open their casinos between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Which casino games are on cruise ships?

Gaming in cruise ship casinos usually includes a mix of slot machines and table games, such as three-card poker, Caribbean stud poker, craps, blackjack and roulette. Regionally popular table games like Texas Hold 'em and pai gow may also be available on some sailings.

Can you win money in a cruise ship casino?

cruise ship casino age

Most cruise ship casino games operate under the same rules and payout percentages you would find in a land-based casino; therefore, the answer is yes, you can win money in a cruise ship casino.

Social media posts and casino announcements would indicate that at least a small handful of people win four- and even occasionally five-figure slot machine payouts on a regular basis. But just as in a land-based casino, it's far easier to lose your stake than it is to win that kind of money.

How many casino points do you need to get a free cruise?

As at land-based casinos, each cruise line offering gambling on board sets its own criteria for earning perks through the line's casino loyalty program or players club. Points are generally tied to the time played and the amount of money you gamble, including the money you win and recirculate.

Much like an airline loyalty program, casino points usually accumulate over a year, earning you better perks as you work toward increasingly higher status levels. Annual free or discounted cruises are one of those perks, often beginning with complimentary (aka comped) inside cabins at relatively low status levels.

Many casinos also let you match casino status from land-based casinos (or even other cruise lines), giving you a leg up. For example, I haven't cruised with Carnival in a while, and I've never played in the line's onboard casinos, but I signed up for the Carnival players club via its Fun Match program. When I registered, I uploaded an offer from a competing cruise line and a players club card from MGM. Now when I log in to Carnival's website, I am shown casino offers that include free and discounted cruises.

Related: How to earn free cruises and perks with casino loyalty programs on land and at sea

Some cruise lines also issue instant awards for the number of points earned (i.e., money spent) on an individual cruise, regardless of status. That would be like an airline awarding free future flights to passengers who spent the most money on their flights, no matter their loyalty status.

Most mainstream cruise lines use comped cruises to fill cabins on dates they anticipate having a surplus of vacancies. These extra offers often appear random, but are generally targeted for marketing purposes rather than as rewards for high amounts of play. New players may receive these comps after low levels of play because cruise lines are always interested in attracting new casino players.

All of that adds up to the possibility of receiving a free cruise for a small number of points earned for cruising, as well as guaranteed free cruises as your points rise to the levels of play set out in the cruise lines' casino loyalty programs.

What is the best casino game to play on a cruise ship?

cruise ship casino age

The best casino game to play on a cruise ship is the one that is most entertaining for you. Ultimately, you play to have fun, right?

The games that require a combination of skill and luck are the ones where the odds of winning are in your favor. For example, the overall odds on blackjack favor the casino by only 1%, while the casino has a 25% edge overall when it comes to slot machines.

Those odds mean the cruise lines operating casinos will favor slot machine players over card players, both in terms of the number of games provided and the loyalty perks awarded.

In summary, for winning money, the best games are skill games. For earning loyalty perks like free cruises, slot machines are the best choice.

Are drinks free in the casino on cruise ships?

Historically, drinks have not been free to cruise ship casino gamblers the way they usually are in land-based casinos. There are exceptions, however.

Free drinks in the casino are a perk of casino loyalty on Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Holland America and Norwegian Cruise Line. Reach the required level, and you'll earn free drinks from the casino bar, usually for a full status year. Carnival, Princess and Virgin Voyages also often throw in free drinks (either in the casino or throughout the ship) for individual comped cruises. Everyone actively gambling in the casino gets free well drinks on Celebrity cruises.

In addition, drinks are free in the casinos of luxury cruise lines like Silversea, Seabourn and Regent Seven Seas because all onboard drinks are included in the cruise fare. On the big-ship lines, anyone who purchases a drinks package or cruises on a fare that includes drinks will also be drinking "free" in the casino.

Are cruise ship casinos regulated?

cruise ship casino age

Cruise ship casinos are regulated in two ways. They typically adhere to the laws of the ship's country of registry. But because gambling normally only takes place while the ship is in international waters, cruise lines that sail from U.S. ports also adhere to the rules set out by the Cruise Lines International Association. Those rules state that all equipment purchased and installed on the vessels of member cruise lines will meet the regulatory standards of the Nevada Gaming Control Board or other licensed jurisdiction for payback and internal software.

Additionally, house rules must be made available in every casino. Each member cruise line is to post at every gaming table minimum and maximum betting limits for each game, and only adults are allowed to play the slots or the tables.

What's the age minimum to gamble in a cruise ship casino?

The minimum age for gambling in a cruise ship casino is 18 in most cases, but there are exceptions. MSC Cruises has a minimum gambling age of 21 on any cruise with a U.S. port; otherwise, the age is 18. Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, raise the minimum age to 21 on Alaska sailings.

Do ships run casino tournaments?

Cruise ship casinos on mainstream cruise lines often host tournaments on board featuring various casino games. The list includes slot tournaments, as well as card game tournaments for blackjack and Texas Hold 'em.

Some tournaments are invitational, offered to casino loyalty members of a certain level only. These are often held on cruises hosted specifically for players who have reached that level. For instance, Royal Caribbean holds Signature cruises designed to pamper and entertain these top-level players.

Can you smoke in the casino?

Casinos are often seen as the last bastion of cruise ship smoking freedom (beyond small, designated areas on deck). But the number of ships that offer nonsmoking casinos is steadily growing.

Celebrity Cruises does not allow smoking in its ships' casinos, and the relatively small casinos on luxury ships are generally nonsmoking, as well.

Several lines have hybrid options. For example, some Carnival ships have separate smoking and nonsmoking casinos. Norwegian has separate smoking rooms on some ships; however, cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use are allowed in casinos on ships that don't have separate smoking rooms. Princess does not allow smoking except at designated slot machines, and Holland America also has designated smoking areas in the casino.

Do cruise ship casinos take cash?

cruise ship casino age

Cruise ship casinos accept cash at both slot machines and table games. As an example, you can sit down at a slot machine and feed in a $20 bill, which is then converted into "credits" on the machine's screen. The value of the credit depends on the denomination of the machine. Alternatively, you might walk up to a roulette table and lay down $20 and exchange that for chips.

The exchange of cash at machines and tables is a one-way deal, even when you win. Slot machines and dealers in cruise ship casinos don't dispense cash. When you finish playing, you may be issued a paper credit slip to take to the cashier's cage for cash, or you may have your winnings loaded directly onto your onboard account on some cruise lines. At the tables, you will take chips to the cashier to exchange back into cash.

If you don't travel with cash, you can find ATMs in the casino or at guest services. Alternatives to cash in cruise ship casinos are paper credit slips, which can be played as cash at either machines or tables, onboard credit or casino free play loaded on your stateroom account, or lines of credit arranged with the casino.

You can also charge gambling money directly to your onboard account like you would charge a drink at a bar or anything else on board. Fees for gambling charges vary among cruise lines, but in most instances, table games charge a service fee, and slot machines do not.

For example, my husband recently requested money from his onboard account at a blackjack table and was charged a 5% surcharge. The ship we were on was not set up to charge onboard accounts directly from the slot machines (sometimes they are), so I had to go to the cashier for a credit slip to play. I was not charged a surcharge, although if I had asked for cash, I would have been. Both of our charges were added to our final onboard bill.

Because there is no fee added to money for slot play, onboard casinos will usually put rules in place about how quickly you can cash out of the machine. The rules are designed to keep cruisers from using slot machines as ATMs to get either cash for the table games or to cash out onboard credit they've been given from the cruise line or their travel agent.

Bottom line

If you like to gamble, cruise ship casinos provide a fun way to spend a sea day or evening on the ship. You can take lessons to learn the games you don't know how to play and even participate in tournaments.

Besides the fun of playing on board, many cruise lines have players clubs that offer onboard perks and even free cruises. And since the odds of winning are about the same as in a U.S. land-based casino, with similar regulations in place, cruise ship casinos are a safe bet for fun and entertainment — though we always encourage you to play responsibly.

These Travelers Have a Secret: They Love Cheap Cruises on Old Ships

R oyal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, a cruise ship over five times as large as the Titanic, is preparing for its inaugural voyage in late January. A subset of die-hard passengers are saying they would much prefer the opposite of that mammoth boat.

Picking an older, smaller cruise might make for less fancy travel, but it comes with obvious advantages. Lower demand for the aged vessels in cruise lines’ fleets can prompt some big-deal savings. Some of these ships sail more exotic itineraries, and passengers enjoy greater attention from crew members without feeling so crowded. A cruise ship can start to show its age at around 15 years.

“Each ship has its own personality,” says Mari Marks, a luxury-travel adviser with Protravel International in Beverly Hills, Calif. “Because not everybody is going to love being with over 5,000 of their new best friends.”

Royal Caribbean operates the six largest cruise ships in the world. The Icon is now the largest. It can hold more than 7,000 passengers and comes with everything from an ice-skating arena to six waterslides.

A well-traveled boat

A few years ago, cruise regular and Las Vegas resident David Di Vito went on his first cruise aboard the Oasis of the Seas, which was once the world’s largest cruise vessel. Since then he has sailed on multiple Royal Caribbean ships. His favorite is the less-heralded Vision of the Seas.

Vision of the Seas has been in service since 1998. Di Vito and his fiancée, Marina Vail, appreciated that they weren’t overwhelmed by crowds and could do the activities they wanted.

While the older vessel didn’t have the many niceties of the Oasis of the Seas, they enjoyed themselves. Di Vito liked grabbing a deck chair and watching the ocean. Vail peeled off for trivia games and scavenger hunts.

Fewer people also meant better service, Di Vito, a 34-year-old sound engineer, says. He recalls that the Wi-Fi was more reliable, guest services was more responsive and booking excursions at ports of call wasn’t a hassle.

Such trips are often also cheaper. A seven-night sailing on the Icon of the Seas started at around $2,536 a person on a recent search for an interior stateroom before applying discounts. A three-night cruise to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Fla., in early September on Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas, which will have its maiden voyage in July, started at $827 a person for an interior cabin before discounts.

Meanwhile, a four-night cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, out of Tampa, Fla., on the Grandeur of the Seas, the cruise line’s oldest ship, around that same time started at $519 a person for an interior room before discounts.

Royal Caribbean didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The big get bigger

Other cruise companies have introduced gargantuan vessels in recent years. MSC Cruises entered the MSC World Europa into service in December 2022. The ship can hold more than 6,700 passengers and more than 2,100 crew members.

Carnival’s flagship, the Celebration, had its maiden voyage in late 2022. That ship has a maximum capacity above 6,500 passengers—and boasts the first roller coaster at sea.

“Larger ships offer more operational efficiencies, more revenue-generating opportunities and more space to offer a variety of accommodations, dining, entertainment and recreational features,” says Chris Chiames, chief communications officer for Carnival Cruise Line.

A cruise’s cost generally depends on factors including the length of the trip and demand for the itinerary, travel advisers say. But the ship’s age can also factor in.

Phil Perrey, a minister from St. Charles, Mo., says he and his wife wanted to sail on one of Royal Caribbean’s newer and larger ships. By the time they finished pricing it out, they realized they could pay at least $300 less to sail on the Celebrity Equinox, which first entered service nearly 15 years ago.

“And that’s for a higher-end cruise line,” Perrey says.

A ship pro tip

When booking cruises, Perrey takes an approach recommended by many travel advisers. Instead of looking at when a ship first sailed, he checks when it was last refurbished during what is known as a dry dock.

“A 10-year-old ship that hasn’t been through dry dock is going to feel older than a 20-year-old ship that got out of dry dock two years ago,” he says.

Carnival uses the dry-dock process to install features on its more-mature ships, such as the adult-only Serenity section, Chiames says. Three of its ships—the Sunshine, the Radiance and the Sunrise—were renamed following extensive renovations.

Older ships can come with drawbacks, even if they are recently renovated. They tend to have smaller rooms and fewer cabins with balconies, says Rob Clabbers, president of Q Cruise and Travel in Chicago.

Keeping older ships in a fleet enables cruise lines to serve a wider array of destinations. Newer megaships can be too big to dock in certain harbors, including Tahiti.

“We intentionally place our smaller ships in more exotic destinations with longer, port-intensive itineraries that offer a more immersive experience that our guests love,” says David Herrera, president of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Adam Carnevale, a small-business owner from Hickory, N.C., has sailed most often with Carnival. He and his wife regularly take advantage of offers they get since they frequent the casino.

Many of his cruises have been aboard the Carnival Sunshine. The ship sails out of Charleston, S.C., about four hours from home. They also appreciate the hometown vibe of the ship: They frequently recognize passengers and crew members from previous sailings.

Carnevale was less enthusiastic about a cruise he took out of Miami on the Celebration last summer. He says he found the food and service not up to the same level of quality as what he experienced on the Sunshine. He also wasn’t wowed by the ship’s many amenities, which he compared with an ice-cream cone overloaded with toppings.

“You don’t have to give me all the fancy stuff,” he says. “Sometimes vanilla is good.”

W hen asked to envision a cruise, chances are you might summon images of kids wailing down waterslides, dripping in ice cream and building sandcastles, typically what you see in the many candy-colored ads from mega cruise ships. But those are far from the only cruise options out there for grown-ups who want to get away from it all. The best cruises for adults cater to adult guests with high-brow luxuries or dedicated spaces—and some even don’t allow kids on board, period.

Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere of like-minded (and aged) travelers or simply need a little time away from your own kiddos, there are several excellent cruises out there that provide a more mature, yet still fun, experience. Below, we’ve selected the adults-only cruise lines for 2024 that will ensure that everyone onboard is old enough to vote, as well as adults-focused sailings that are guaranteed to make you the center of attention—at least while you’re on vacation.

Best Adults-Only Luxury Cruise: Viking Cruises

Best adults-only cruise for older couples: saga cruises, best adults-only cruise for single adults: virgin voyages, best adults-focused luxury cruise: regent seven seas cruises, best adults-focused all-inclusive cruise: seabourn cruise line, best adults-focused cruise for younger adults: norwegian cruise line, best adults-focused cruise for parents who want alone time: windstar cruises.

Viking Octantis Library

Viking Cruises

Minimum Age Required : 18
Caters to : Couples 40+
Destinations : Europe; Caribbean; Asia; Australia; Antarctica; Arctic; world voyages
All-Star Amenities : Industry-leading Nordic Spa, free for all guests; beer and wine at lunch and dinner; all dining options complimentary; included tour in each port; free Wi-Fi; stunning Scandinavian design

Viking is the pioneer of comfortable, adult-only cruising for the modern traveler. In the past 25 years, the company has expanded from a river cruise line primarily based in Europe to one of the largest river fleets in the industry; an award-winning oceangoing cruise line that crisscrosses the globe; and expedition ships that can navigate to the North and South Poles. The breadth of Viking’s destinations and cruise styles is nearly unmatched, but its decision to accommodate a kid-free atmosphere positively sets it apart.

In a conscious effort to cater to the “thinking person,” Viking is free of casinos and eye-catching amusements, instead focusing on guests’ enrichment and relaxation. This is especially apparent around each one of Viking’s ocean or expedition ships, outfitted with remarkable libraries as well as planetariums and research facilities, respectively. Touches from years of river cruising, including a free tour option in each port, beer and wine served at meals and a 24/7 coffee and tea station, have migrated over to all ships across the brand. Unique to its ocean and expedition ships is the stylish Nordic Spa, a complimentary thermal suite employing hot and cold rooms and a gorgeous thalassotherapy pool. Unchanged across any ship is the Norwegian cruise company’s heritage, infused into every aspect from its interior design to its spa treatments and selection of aquavit.

Saga Spirit of Discovery

Saga Cruises

Minimum Age Required : 50 (40 for second passengers)
Caters to : Mature cruisers
Destinations : Baltics; British Isles; Canaries; Norway; Iceland/Greenland; Caribbean; Americas
All-Star Amenities : All balcony cabins; included thermal suite; included gratuities; free Wi-Fi; all meals and drinks, including premium spirits; travel insurance; private chauffeur transfers (within UK)

If you’d really rather weed out any travel companions not even close to retirement, hop across the pond for a cruise vacation with Saga. This British company serves the needs of the 50-plus community, from insurance to all-inclusive holidays and cruises. Specializing in small-ship voyages, Saga Cruises offers itineraries aboard two 987-passenger ocean vessels as well as a handful of river ships—some owned and some chartered. The line is very inclusive, offering alcohol, tours, tips and more bundled into the price (just be aware that it will be listed in pounds). Saga is so confident you’ll love your first cruise with them that they offer a money-back guarantee. However, the hook for North Americans is that every ocean departure leaves from the UK.

With a focus on European itineraries, Saga invites older couples looking for a laidback voyage to depart from either Portsmouth or Dover, bound for the fjords of Iceland or the sunshine of the Canary Islands. Special departures include a 15-night March sailing through Norway to view the northern lights; a 30-night venture exploring Africa’s Atlantic Coast; and a 28-night transatlantic that then sails along the East Coast of Canada and New England to take in the fall foliage. Most Saga cruises are at least 12 to 14 nights, so expect to find a mature crowd who has likely already left the workforce.

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages

Caters to : Young at heart
Destinations : Caribbean (with stop at private port in Bimini); Europe; South Pacific; Transatlantic
All-Star Amenities : All 20+ dining venues included; complimentary fitness classes; free Wi-Fi; included tips; extensive nightlife and entertainment options, free of charge

In keeping with its unconventional and ever-evolving brand identity, Virgin Voyages approaches its decision to leave the kids at home with tongue firmly in cheek. One commercial features children looking forlornly out of rain-streaked windows and singing sadly about their parents cruising without them. It’s all in good fun, of course, with an onboard atmosphere that is intentionally a little naughty and not suitable for young families. It’s in this welcoming, anything-goes environment that solo cruisers will thrive, with ample opportunities to mingle—or not.

Virgin is not all-inclusive, but it’s made smart decisions about what is on offer, from fitness classes like yoga, boxing or spin to the ability to pop into any dining venue across the ship at any time. With no set seatings and a penchant for after-hours dance parties and burlesque shows, the cruising vibe is flexible and caters to singles and friend groups rolling out of bed to brunch or shuffling up to the 24-hour diner at dawn before rolling into bed. Nearly every short cruise from Miami includes a full day at the Beach Club at Bimini, the cruise line’s private port where pool parties and evening bonfires remind Virgin’s “sailors” they’re officially out of office and not in a rush to get back onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas

Perks for Adults : Hefty price tag keeps younger cruisers to a minimum; alcohol included, plus in-room mini-bar; fine dining for mature palates; longer itineraries with free land programs; Culinary Arts Kitchen
Destinations : Alaska; Europe; Bermuda; Asia; Australia/New Zealand; South America; world cruises
All-Star Amenities : Free airfare; complimentary one-night, pre-cruise hotel stay; free shore excursions; unlimited Wi-Fi; well-appointed suites; included valet laundry service

Children are welcome onboard Regent Seven Seas, but primarily on select voyages to Alaska or Europe in the summer months. It’s not complicated to choose a far-flung or multi-week itinerary that will whittle down the chances of children from slim to none, like a 21-night December departure from Dubai to Singapore. Regent’s Grand Voyages aren’t quite world cruises, but span about two months sailing some of the world’s most coveted ports of call, including a 67-night circumvention of South America round trip from Miami or 70 nights following the Spice Route from Auckland to Athens. Sumptuous suites include the 4,000-plus square-foot Regent Suite, priced at $11,000 per night, with exclusive features like an in-suite spa and complimentary treatments.

On the self-proclaimed “world’s most luxurious cruise line,” the flourishes you’ll find are intended to impress the adults in charge of the purse strings: Carrera marble, Versace place settings, a $90,000 Savoir mattress and 158 crystal chandeliers on Seven Seas Explorer alone. It’s an elevated luxury cruising experience better suited to—and appreciated by—well-traveled and well-heeled older adults. Among these delights are the wining and dining that guests can find onboard, including the epicurean classes held in the Culinary Arts Center, located on half of the fleet’s ships.

Seabourn Venture

Seabourn Cruise Line

Perks for Adults : Curated “Seabourn Moments” like Caviar in the Surf; in-suite cocktail parties arranged by your suite attendant; signature toiletries by Molton Brown; premium spirits and fine wines; Thomas Keller restaurant; Seabourn Conversations enrichment series with high-profile guest lecturers
Destinations : Amazon; Northwest Passage; Alaska; Europe; Australia (including the Kimberley); South Pacific; Panama Canal; Antarctica and South Georgia; world cruises
All-Star Amenities : High crew-to-guest ratio; all oceanfront suites; included gratuities; unlimited Wi-Fi; spa and wellness program designed by Dr. Andrew Weil

Seabourn has thought of everything when it comes to pampering its guests, from partnerships with Thomas Keller, the Michelin-starred chef of The French Laundry, to an experience noshing on Champagne and caviar from a floating bar. It’s unlikely, however, that anyone’s kids would be impressed by these offerings, let alone the upscale atmosphere of Seabourn’s intimate ships. Children are allowed to sail on Seabourn, but with no kids’ clubs or activities beyond the likes of lectures and afternoon tea, it’s not the cruise line to anticipate piles of school kids during spring break.

Instead, even established travelers might find some of Seabourn’s itineraries to be impressive, especially sailed by its expedition arm. Focusing on the ends of the earth, Seabourn expedition cruises reach extremes like East Greenland, the Northwest Passage, Antarctica and the wild Kimberley region of Australia. While some of these voyages are a manageable 10 or 15 days, the focus is on the history and exploration of the destination and not as much focus on fun in the sun. The 2024 world cruise departs Los Angeles for 145 days to 28 countries. Seabourn passengers can pass the time onboard with an espresso or martini at any of the onboard bars or lounges or arrange for an indulgent ensuite bubble bath—rubber ducky not included.

NCL Cruise Line, Pride of America, Na Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

Norwegian Cruise Line

Perks for Adults : Choice sun decks for the over-18 crowd; studio cabins for solo cruisers; Haven complex provides secluded spaces; large fitness centers (must be 16+); casinos (must be 18+); late-night entertainment like Howl at the Moon piano bar plus cocktail lounges and wine bars aplenty
Destinations : Alaska; Bahamas; Caribbean; Europe; Canada/New England; Hawaii; South Pacific
All-Star Amenities : Shows plucked straight from Broadway and West End included in fare; adult-focused restaurants including Onda by Scarpetta and Le Bistro; deck parties; waterfront dining on select ships

Sure, Norwegian Cruise Line has won a ton of accolades for its family-friendly cruising. And chances are, you will probably spot quite a few kids throughout your sailing (especially depending on when and where you sail). However, cruisers in their 20s and 30s who aren’t ready to hang up their party hats will still find plenty of opportunities to escape screaming tots across Norwegian’s fleet of 19 ships. The entertainment and nightlife options alone make it a great fit for young adults, and the cruise line’s many cabin categories—including rooms designed for single adults—accommodate most cruising styles.

While the Haven “ship within a ship” complex isn’t an adults-only space (families who can afford it flock here), the additional amenities of a dedicated bar, lounge restaurant and sun deck make it an attractive option for holidaymakers seeking R&R away from the masses. Norwegian also offers not one but three sun decks solely for adults (not counting the Haven, if you’ve paid to upgrade to a suite there). Spice H2O is a complimentary adults-only sun deck on select ships that becomes an open-air dance club by night. The Vibe Beach Club will cost you extra, but includes spacious hot tubs, chilled towels and a full-service bar, plus the ability to rent a private cabana. Posh Beach Club is featured on Norwegian Epic for a fee, but free to Haven guests.

Windstar Star Pride

Windstar Cruises

Perks for Adults : Intimate ship atmosphere (less than 350 guests); partnership with James Beard Foundation; culinary shore excursions; romance packages; themed cruises including Monaco Grand Prix
Destinations : Tahiti; Australia/New Zealand; Caribbean; Italy; Middle East; Iceland; Alaska
All-Star Amenities : Watersports platform with use of kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear; yachts visit off-the-beaten-path ports of call; alfresco Candles restaurant romantic dinner option

If you’re looking for a hideout from the bells and whistles of kid-centric cruise ships, Windstar cruises offers yachts and sailing vessels designed to take you into quiet coves and tucked-away destinations. A minimum age requirement of 8 years old eliminates the chances of a crying baby onboard. Parents who are looking for an adult-focused cruise will enjoy the small-ship romance of Windstar and its exotic itineraries. Seek out the idyllic waters of Tahiti from Papeete or uncover the ancient Holy Lands, with sailings like a 16-night voyage from Istanbul to Haifa.

Foodies will salivate over the chance to book a James Beard-themed cruise, exploring the flavors of regions like Greece; France and Spain; Japan; and the Persian Gulf. Each sailing features demos and dinners with a chef from the James Beard Foundation as well as market visits, tastings and recipes, allowing parents to feel miles from making dinner for picky eaters.

About Brittany Chrusciel, Your Adults-Only Cruise Guide

I have been covering the cruise and travel industry across oceans, lakes, rivers and expeditions for more than a decade. Some of my favorite things to do on cruises is to dive into the ports and destinations visited for a taste of local culture. To date, I have been on over 50 cruises and have had the privilege of sailing some of the world's most scenic waterways, from Portugal's Douro River and the Galapagos Islands to Alaska and Arctic Svalbard. When I’m not at sea, I can be found (still by the sea) in my hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Gambling is a popular form of entertainment. As such, it is a very profitable addition to cruise lines. Most cruise lines offer an onboard casino to their clients. These casinos remain a favourite attraction.

If you’ve entered a land-based casino, you’ve probably wondered if they’re fair. The same happens with cruise line casinos. It’s natural to be cautious, especially if your own money is involved. At the online casino , we share some legitimate casinos that you can try.

Our expert writer, Kate Richards , shares her knowledge on these and other topics related to gambling and casinos.

This article will go over the various aspects of luxury liners’ casinos to determine if they’re legitimate and fair.

What Is Different About Cruise Line Casinos?

There are a few differences between casinos on land versus casinos on luxury liners. Below we‘ll look into some of the significant variations that you can expect.

We all know that the odds are always in the houses’ favour when we gamble. This is even more true on cruise line casinos. This isn’t illegal or unfair, but rather just a variation in the payout. As such, don’t expect a luxury liner’s casino to payout the same amount of winnings as land casinos.

So, if you’re on a luxury liner with access to a casino, make sure you go with the focus of having fun rather than walking away with big winnings.

Available Games

Although luxury liner casinos are usually smaller than their land-based counterparts, they can still offer an assortment of the most popular games. You’ll undoubtedly find slots, poker tables, blackjack tables, craps tables and roulette tables.

There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy your favourite games at a luxury liner casino.

Gambling Age

There are some exceptions to this, and it’ll be largely dependent on the route your cruise line is following. If you are cruising in waters off the USA’s coast, the age limit will be 21 years. However, if you’re on a cruise heading to international waters, the age limit is 18 years old.

Opening Times

Several laws govern overseas casino gambling. These are once again dependent on the jurisdiction the cruise liner is in. There’s one basic rule regarding the opening times for cruise ship casino gambling. That rule is that the casino is open while the ship is at sea.

This means that while the ship is docked, the casino will be closed. We can play games like slots and coin pushers at any time. Whereas table games that require staff might not be available at all hours.

Drinks – Are They Free?

Certain land-based casinos offer free drinks while you gamble. This can be a great bonus to the whole experience. However, most cruise lines do not offer this, and you will still need to pay for any drinks while you gamble unless you are part of the specific cruise lines loyalty programme and this is offered as a benefit to those with high loyalty status.

How Are Cruise Line Casinos Regulated?

The association that regulates the equipment, rules of play, internal audits, internal control procedure for cash counting, and customer service is called Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

CLIA follows the regulatory standards and rules of play from licensed and established casinos.

Is Casino Legal?

You may wonder, is the casino legal? How can you tell? The simple rule of thumb is that while you’re in international waters, gambling is legal. So making use of cruise ship entertainment is entirely legal.

The casino will close when the ship enters seas where gambling isn’t allowed and when the ship docks to conform to local gambling laws.

Is Gambling on Cruise Line Casinos Fair and Legitimate?

The simple answer is yes. The cruise line will be risking too much by running an unfair casino. The profit they make from running a legitimate casino is much more and less risky than trying to trick players and act unfairly.

Try the Casino on Your Next Cruise

People have reported extraordinary experiences from cruise ship casinos. So make sure that you try the cruise ship casino gambling on your next holiday. You may find that it is a great way to relax and enjoy some pleasant entertainment while on the ship.
