Self-Assessment Exams

There are several options that can assist your preparation, including  CCI’s Self-Assessment Examinations  which can be found  here .

We have prepared online self-assessment exams to help gauge your knowledge of the content areas on the exam and help determine which areas may have strengths and weaknesses. The self-assessment exam contains sample items covering the approximate proportion of subject matter to match the CCI exam matrix.

Self-assessment exams do not provide a report of missed items or specific information or feedback on incorrect responses. Once the self-assessment is complete, you will receive a performance profile that displays the percentage of correct responses in the content areas that make up the examination.

It is important to note that the results of the self-assessment exam do not guarantee or indicate individual success on the exam, nor should the self-assessment serve as the only means for preparing for the examination.

Examination Details

The RCCS examination is a three-hour (3-hour) computer-based test.

Question Types

Question types consist of 130 questions (110 scored and 20 unscored), that contain a mix of traditional and innovative item types.

  • Traditional multiple-choice  – Only one of four possible answers is correct (e.g. A, B, C or D).
  • Innovative multiple responses  – Two or three answers are correct from a list of four to six possible answers.  The test taker will be instructed to select a certain number of correct answers (e.g. “ Select two correct responses. ”)
  • Innovative hot spot  – The test taker will be instructed to click on one specific area of an image to answer the question.  Only one answer (click) is necessary, but it must be in the correct location.
  • Innovative drag and place  – The test taker will be instructed to drag a collection of labels (tokens) into specific boxes or areas on an image.  The correct tokens will need to be placed in the correct boxes in order to get the question right. It’s possible that all tokens may not be used.

The 20 unscored questions are not identified and are randomly distributed throughout the exam to gather performance data. A candidate’s exam score is based on the responses to the 110-scored questions. One hour and fifty (50) minutes are allotted for answering the exam questions and ten (10) minutes for a pre-exam tutorial and post-exam survey.

The textbooks listed below are intended as recommended resources when preparing for the examination. You may have previous or later editions of these or other references available that also present acceptable coverage of the subject matter. Any general text in cardiovascular techniques and evaluation, and cardiac patient care and management may be used. It is not necessary to use all of the texts identified. They are provided as suggestions only. CCI does not endorse or recommend any third-party review course or material.

Exam Questions, Comments, and Scoring

The RCCS examination is a  three-hour, computer-based exam that contains 170 questions  (150 scored and 20 unscored). Two (2) hours and fifty (50) minutes are allotted for answering the exam questions and ten (10) minutes are allotted for a tutorial and post-exam survey.

A candidate’s exam score is based on the responses to the 150-scored questions. The time you have been allotted to take the examination has been determined by taking into consideration the number of scored and un-scored items.

Each question is shown with four possible answers, only one of which is the correct or best answer. Unscored questions are not identified and are randomly distributed throughout the exam. This is standard practice and enables CCI to evaluate questions that may be used in future examinations.

Each CCI examination, including individual items, contains an option where a candidate is allowed to make comments pertaining to the exam item and/or the examination as a whole. These comments are reviewed by the appropriate examination committee throughout the year. While responses to comments are not provided back to you, your comments will be used to help ensure the maintenance of CCI’s high-quality examinations.

Interpreting Results

Here’s what you can expect after taking the exam

  • Exam takers will receive an unofficial score report onsite at the Pearson VUE testing center. This will provide a total score, pass/fail status, and a breakdown report of the percentage of questions answered correctly in each content area.
  • Total scores are reported on a scale that ranges from  0 to 900 . Keep in mind that CCI total scaled scores do not equal the number or percentage of questions answered correctly.
  • A total scaled score of  650 is required to pass an exam , and the number of correct answers required to achieve a score of 650 was determined through a standard-setting (or passing score) study. CCI and panels of experts from each specialty periodically review the passing score to assure its validity.
  • You will receive an official results letter, certificate, and wallet card from CCI headquarters approximately 15 business days after taking an exam.

Score Verification

If you would like a score verification, there is a processing fee of $50 USD.

Score verification ensures that the computer counted the correct and incorrect answers appropriately but does not review the questions and answers. In deciding whether to have your score verified, please consider that CCI examinations are scored electronically with a high degree of accuracy. It is therefore unlikely that verification will alter your original score.

  • You must submit a written request for score verification.
  • Please print or type all information and include a check, money order, or credit card processing fee in the amount of $50 USD.
  • Send your request to: CCI at 3739 National Drive, Suite 202, Raleigh, NC 27612

A credential is active for 9-12 months after passing a CCI exam. After that period credential holders have two types of renewal with CCI:

  • First renewal
  • Second renewal/first triennial

First Renewal Requirements

New credential holders are required to pay their first renewal before the first day of the same quarter that the credential was earned but in the following year. SEE THE CHART BELOW.

For example, if the credential is earned between April 1st and June 30th, your first renewal would be due on or before March 31st of the following year.

After completing the first renewal, credentials are renewed every three years .

For the first renewal, there are no Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements, only a renewal fee, currently $165.00 USD, and a signature of compliance with the Code of Ethics must be submitted. Your date of renewal will be noted on your initial wallet card, which will be sent in your welcome packet.

Second Renewal/First Triennial Requirements

Maintaining an “active status” as a CCI credential holder requires the following three steps. Until all three are fulfilled, your credential will not be renewed.

  • Submit your triennial renewal fees (currently $165.00 USD)
  • Sign in compliance with the CCI Code of Ethics, which can be downloaded through the button above.
  • The total number of CEUs required in a triennial cycle for a Certificate-Level (CCT and CRAT) is sixteen (16) CEUs.
  • The total number of CEUs required in a triennial cycle for an Advanced-Level (ACS) is thirty-six (36) CEUs.
  • The total number of CEUs required in a triennial cycle for a Registry-Level (CES, RCIS, RCS, RCCS, RPhS, and RVS) is thirty-six (36) CEUs.

For the advanced and registry levels,  thirty (30) of these CEUs must be cardiovascular-related . The remaining 6 or fewer CEUs can be on any topic as long as it is from one of the  approved providers .

Wallet cards are provided to successful exam candidates and expire on the date of the first renewal. Triennial wallet cards are provided upon the second renewal of credentials.

Pediatric Echocardiography (PE)

The PS application is now open and closes on March 19, 2024. You can now take your examination online from home. Learn more!

The Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) examination tests the requisite pediatric echocardiography knowledge, skills and abilities essential to Sonography Professionals. If you are a physician interested in applying for the RDCS credential with an PE specialty, please visit the website  for ARDMS’s physician-centric companion Council, the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement (APCA).

To earn a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential with a PE specialty, you must pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and the PE examination within five years . After passing the SPI examination, you can earn additional credentials without having to retake the SPI examination, provided you maintain active status.

You must wait until the next administration to retake the PE examination if you do not pass the examination.

  • Prerequisites

PE EXAMINATION OVERVIEW

The PE examination assesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities in the areas of normal and abnormal cardiac anatomy, physiology, pathology and hemodynamics as appropriate in the pediatric patient.

Applicants may pursue the PE specialty under the RDCS credential. Once the PE examination is passed under the selected credential, it cannot be switched.

As a windowed examination, scores for the PE examination will be available approximately 60 days after the close of the administration. For more information, review the “Scoring” tab.

We periodically conduct a PE Job Task Analysis (JTA) and update the PE examination to reflect the frequency and importance of PE tasks being performed by Sonography Professionals.

QUESTION FORMAT & DURATION

The PE examination is three hours and contains 145 multiple-choice questions, which include hotspot questions. The hotspot questions are Advanced Item Type questions  that assess and measure your practical sonography skills.

To earn a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) credential with an PE specialty, you must pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and the PE examination within five years .

After passing the SPI examination, you can earn additional credentials without having to retake the SPI examination, provided you maintain active status.

Note:  The PE Examination is a windowed examination. Therefore, it is only offered during select periods of the year. Please refer to the “Schedule” tab for upcoming dates.

IMPARTIALITY

ARDMS functions under policies intended to demonstrate impartiality, high ethical standards and validity of its certification assessments. ARDMS does not restrict Applicants, Candidates or becoming a Registrant based on limiting conditions, such as membership of an association or professional society of any organization. ARDMS will not unfairly impede or inhibit access to its certification to Applicants, Candidates or Registrants who meet our stated policies regarding qualification requirements, renewal requirements and/or passing ARDMS’ psychometrically sound certification assessments.

FIVE-YEAR RULE

To earn an RDMS, RDCS, RVT or RMSKS credential, you must pass the SPI examination and a corresponding specialty examination within five years , regardless of sequence. This five-year rule does not apply if you are seeking additional specialties under a credential already earned or if you have already earned a credential with the SPI examination. If you do not complete both examinations within the five-year period, you must retake the examination previously passed.

The five-year rule is based on the calendar year (January 1 through December 31). The five-year period begins the day you pass the first examination, and it includes any time that remains in that year plus the next five years . For example, a candidate who passed the first ARDMS examination on June 6, 2010, is required to pass the second examination by December 31, 2015.

ABOUT THE PE PRACTICE TEST

Taking a practice test or two is a great way to prepare for your actual examination. We offer a Pediatric Echocardiography (PE) Practice Test that simulates the computer interface used in the actual test center environment. The PE practice test review is comprised of 30 sample questions and is 30 minutes long.

After you complete a practice test, you will be emailed a report that shows the number of questions you answered correctly. While the report is an indication of your knowledge, the practice tests results should not be used to predict how well you will perform on the actual examination at the test center.

See  FAQs  for additional information.

REGISTER FOR A PE PRACTICE TEST

Each practice test costs $45 USD.

You can now register for a PE practice test by signing into your  MY ARDMS  account and clicking the Sign Up/View Practice Test option in the Application Center tab. You can also view the computer system requirements in your MY ARDMS portal. For any general questions or technical problems regarding the practice tests, please call ARDMS at (800) 541-9754 option 1 or email  [email protected] .

Before you start your test you should review the test tutorial. Please note you will not get a chance to review the test tutorial during the actual practice test, so please prepare accordingly. Once your session begins, you have 30 minutes to complete the practice test.

Register  for a PE practice test, by signing in your  MY ARDMS  account.

REVIEW THE PE CONTENT OUTLINE

The PE examination covers the following content areas. All percentages are an approximate distribution of the questions across the content areas.

Your score report will display and include performance feedback for these content areas.

REVIEW OUR TIPS FOR EXAMINATION DAY SUCCESS

After all of your diligent preparation and hours spent studying, here are a few valuable tips to help make your examination day a success:

• Double check that you know where the test center is before examination day and give yourself plenty of time to get there. Remember, you MUST arrive and register at least 30 minutes before the examination begins. • Get a good night’s sleep before you take your examination. Being well rested and relaxed when you take your examination will help you concentrate. • Bring one form of current and valid identification that complies with the test center identification requirements . • Travel light. The only thing you can bring into the testing room is you. You can store your personal belongings — your car keys, watch, smartphone, purse, backpack, etc. — in lockers at the test center. The following items are not allowed in test centers: study materials, food, drink, visitors/guests, pets and children. • Request a white board if you plan to jot down notes during the examination. Test centers are using white boards (rather than paper) in an effort to “go green.” • Be advised that the use of a calculator for this examination is prohibited.  However, you may utilize the White Board provided at the test center or the digital White Board provided for online proctoring examinations for manual calculations.

USE STUDY MATERIALS

Even though we offer practice examinations and sample questions, we do not offer study materials for our examinations – but our sister organizations do. You can find materials at:

•  Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography •  American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine  •  Society for Vascular Ultrasound •  American Society of Echocardiography

LEARN ABOUT ADVANCED ITEM TYPE PREPARATION QUESTIONS

The PE examination features  Advanced Item Type questions , which assess and measure your practical sonography skills. They include hotspot questions in which you will receive questions about individual images. You will use the cursor to mark the correct answer directly on the image.

Watch ARDMS Presents:  How to Answer a Hotspot Question .

HOW IS THE PE EXAMINATION SCORED?

The PE examination evaluates the knowledge and skills you must demonstrate as a PE Sonography Professional. The primary test result is a PASS or FAIL decision. In addition, you will receive a scaled score, ranging from 300 to 700. A scaled score of 555 is required to pass all ARDMS examinations.

The scaled score is not a percentage of correct answers, nor is it built on a “curve” where a certain percentage of scores would pass and a certain percentage would fail. To learn more, visit  Notification of Results and Scoring .

HOW DO I GET MY PE SCORE REPORT?

Examination results and a full score report will be available approximately 60 days after the close of the examination administration. At that time, an email will be sent to you with instructions on how to access your score report in  MY ARDMS .

Candidates receiving a confirmed passing score on all required examinations and meeting all other requirements will be awarded a certification. For information on the ARDMS’ scoring methods, visit  Notification of Results and Scoring .

Candidates who do not pass are invited to re-apply.

SCHOOL REPORT

When submitting your ARDMS application, you consent to us releasing your examination results to your educational program.

Program Directors can receive a School Report for current programs and programs completed in the past three years. To learn more, visit  School Reports .

SCORE VERIFICATION

You can request a score verification for a $35 USD fee, payable by check, money order or credit card. Score verification ensures that the computer counted the correct and incorrect answers appropriately, but it does not review the questions and answers.

You must submit the completed  Exam Score Verification Form within 30 days of having taken the examination in question. The Exam Score Verification Form will be returned if incomplete, unsigned or unpaid.

When deciding whether to have your score verified, please consider that ARDMS examinations are scored electronically with a high degree of accuracy, and it is unlikely that verification will alter your original score.

ARDMS certification examinations are developed to assess the knowledge and skills necessary to practice the specialty safely and competently.
