Do Citi cards have travel insurance?

Car rental insurance, costco anywhere visa® card by citi travel insurance benefits, citi® / aadvantage® executive world elite mastercard® travel insurance coverage, does citibank offer travel insurance.

Citi credit cards provide a host of benefits, including some generous points and miles earning opportunities (depending on the card you have).

But, when it comes to travel insurance, let’s just say it’s not necessarily Citi cards' strong suit.

Still, there are Citibank travel insurance benefits you should know about to ensure you use the right card when paying for your next trip. Here are the primary benefits associated with Citi card travel insurance.

Only two Citi cards have travel insurance, and each one has a different set of benefits: The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® .

Citibank Costco-Anywhere Visa Card Credit Card

on Citibank's application

Citibank Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ MasterCard® Credit Card

Both cards provide rental car insurance.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also offers roadside assistance, worldwide travel accident insurance and a 24/7 concierge for travel and emergency assistance. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , on the other hand, offers baggage protection, trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay protections.

» Learn more: Best Citi credit cards right now

If you use either of the two Citi credit cards listed above to pay for a car rental, Citi travel insurance will protect any damages to a rental car up to $50,000.

This amount will cover the cost of repairs or the cash value of the car, whichever is lower. It applies anywhere you rent a car — there are no geographic limitations — as long as the rental period is no longer than 31 days. Citibank travel insurance covers accidental damage, theft, vandalism or a natural disaster, and any necessary towing costs.

Citi's rental car insurance is secondary when renting a car within the U.S., but if you're renting outside of the country, it switches to primary coverage.

With secondary insurance, you need to rely on any other insurance coverage you have before Citi’s car rental insurance kicks in. Primary insurance, alternatively, will be the first line of coverage you have.

Coverage wouldn't apply if you rent the car to someone else or operate a rental car as a rideshare vehicle. It also only covers the car, not any personal injuries that might result from an accident.

There are several types of vehicles that are excluded from coverage. These include:

Trucks, pickup trucks, trailers, full-size vans on a truck chassis or recreational vehicles like campers and off-road vehicles.

Motorcycles or motorized bikes.

Commercial vehicles or cargo vans.

Any vehicle with fewer than four wheels.

Antique vehicles older than 20 years or that have not been made in the past decade.

Limousines.

Sport-utility trucks or open, flat-bed trucks.

Any vehicle that retails for over $50,000.

Roadside assistance

When driving in the U.S., roadside assistance is available for Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi cardholders by calling 866-918-4670.

Roadside assistance is valuable in the event of an accident, loss of fuel or other vehicle malfunction. Keep in mind that you would still have to pay for the assistance (like a tow truck, for example), but this benefit makes it easy to reach someone with one phone call.

Citi card provides access to similar assistance as a membership program like AAA . The difference is that AAA’s annual fee covers roadside assistance fees while Citi's coverage doesn't; it solely provides access to someone who can help you for a reduced rate.

Several credit cards provide some type of roadside assistance and are worth considering before paying the annual fee for AAA.

Worldwide travel accident insurance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi includes accident insurance, which covers the cardholder or family members if they are injured or killed when traveling on a common carrier (any vehicle that is licensed to carry passengers like a bus, plane, cruise ship or train).

You will need to have used the Citi card to cover the entire cost of the travel on that common carrier for the benefit to apply. The maximum coverage is $250,000.

Travel and emergency assistance

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi card provides access to a 24/7 concierge to help you with a disruption to your trip. This can include medical assistance, referrals to a doctor or legal help. It can also help if you need to adjust travel plans.

Just remember, you’ll be responsible for paying for any services used, but the call is toll-free.

Baggage protection

Only available for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , this luggage protection provides coverage if your checked bag is stolen, lost or damaged.

The insurance covers as much as $3,000 per person ($2,000 for New York residents), but only kicks in if you use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

» Learn more: The guide to baggage insurance

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

If a covered traveler has a medical emergency or dies, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® coverage can provide reimbursement for up to $5,000 in eligible nonrefundable expenses.

You would need to use the card or American AAdvantage miles to pay for the trip.

Trip delay protection

Another benefit that’s reserved only for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is trip delay protection . This coverage kicks in if your trip is delayed by at least six hours, and offers reimbursement for expenses incurred during the delay, up to $500 per trip.

This would include reasonable purchases like hotel stays, rental cars and meals.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

Citibank travel insurance is available, but limited. It is only offered on two cards and isn't as comprehensive as other credit cards with travel insurance .

Both cards include rental car coverage, but beyond this, each has its own set of benefits. Depending on which one you hold, it may include coverage like trip delay protection or roadside assistance.

People hold Citi cards for many reasons, including the ability to earn transferable Citi ThankYou Points . But, the travel insurance benefits are somewhat limited. If you have a Citi card, review the travel insurance perks before you take off to understand your coverage.

Citi cardholders: Save $100 on hotel bookings with this offer

Emily Thompson

If you're a Citi cardholder who's ready to book holiday travel or pick out dream destinations for 2024, you're in luck. With Citi's current travel portal offers, you might be able to save money and earn bonus rewards on your travel bookings.

Let's dive into who's eligible and how much you can save.

Current Citi Travel deals for select cardholders

Now through Jan. 31, 2024, eligible Citi cardmembers can enjoy $100 off all hotel stays of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) when they book through Citi Travel .

The following cards are eligible for this offer:

  • Citi Custom Cash® Card (see rates and fees )
  • Citi Double Cash® Card (see rates and fees )
  • Citi Rewards+® Card (see rates and fees )
  • Citi ThankYou Preferred (no longer available to new applicants)

This is a similar offer to the annual $100 hotel credit Citi Premier® (see rates and fees ) cardholders receive. However, those eligible for this offer can take advantage of it as many times as they want to during the promotional period.

The information for the ThankYou Preferred card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

citi card travel plans

Even better, the $100 hotel savings can be used alongside two other current Citi Travel promotions:

  • Through Dec. 31, 2024, Citi Double Cash cardholders earn 5% cash back on hotel, car rental and attractions booked through Citi Travel. That's 3% more than the typical 2% Double Cash cardholders earn (1% on all purchases and 1% as they pay).
  • Through June 2024, Thank You Preferred and Rewards+ cardholders earn an elevated 5 points per dollar when they book hotels, rental cars and attractions through Citi Travel.

However, remember that there are drawbacks to booking through a travel portal , such as forfeiting hotel status benefits. Before booking your trip, run the numbers to ensure you get a good deal.

Related: You might only save $7 with the Citi Premier $100 hotel credit

Bottom line

If you have a Citi credit card eligible for one or more of these current promotions, you could save some serious cash and earn bonus rewards on your travels when you book through Citi Travel this holiday season.

Just check the deals you have through Citi Travel against those available through other booking methods to ensure you get the best bang for your buck.

Citi is a Blueprint partner.

The Citi Double Cash® Card is the king of earning straightforward cash-back rewards. With the no-annual-fee card, you’ll earn 2% cash back on purchases — 1% when purchases are made and another 1% when they’re paid off, plus, for a limited time, 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal through 12/31/24.

This favorable earning rate applies no matter where you’re shopping with the card. But now, the deal is even sweeter for cardholders looking to plan upcoming travel. Through December 31, 2024, you can earn 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals, and attractions booked through the Citi Travel portal.

Here’s how you can maximize this rewards rate on your future travel bookings.

Earn up to 5% cash back on select travel with the Citi Double Cash

Earlier this year, Citi unveiled a new travel portal, built exclusively for its cardholders. Whether you’ve got cards like the Citi Premier® Card * The information for the Citi Premier® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , the Citi Rewards+® Card * The information for the Citi Rewards+® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. or the Citi Double Cash® Card , it’s easy to redeem your points or cash back for new travel bookings at checkout.

While the Citi Double Cash Card has long been one of our top picks in the best 2% cash-back credit card category, you can now earn an elevated 5% total cash back on hotels, car rentals, and attractions through the portal. There’s no limit to the number of rewards you can earn, so long as you make your booking by Dec. 31, 2024.

At this rate, you’ll earn 3% more cash back on top of what you already earn day-to-day with the Citi Double Cash® Card . While you won’t earn bonus rewards on flight bookings on the travel portal, you’ll still come out ahead by earning 2% cash back on purchases — 1% when purchases are made and another 1% when they’re paid off, plus, for a limited time, 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal through 12/31/24.

As long as you don’t mind booking travel through Citi, the rewards rate on travel bookings rivals some of the best travel credit cards on the market including the Chase Sapphire Reserve® which earns 5 points per $1 on flights and 10 points per $1 on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards® after the first $300 is spent on travel purchases annually. Earn 3 points per $1 on other travel and dining and 1 point per $1 on other purchases and has a $550 annual fee, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. which earns 2 miles per $1 on purchases, 5 miles per $1 on flights booked through Capital One Travel and on purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 10 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked via Capital One Travel and has a $395 annual fee and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card which earns 5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases and has a $95 annual fee. But the Citi Double Cash has a $0 annual fee.

Here’s how two of the best travel rewards cards on the market stack up against each other: Capital One Venture X vs Chase Sapphire Reserve

How to use the Citi Travel℠ Portal

You can navigate to the Citi Travel Portal by visiting your online account. Powered by Booking.com, the portal offers a clean interface to search for flights, hotels, car rentals, and experiences.

citi card travel plans

Once you’ve reached checkout, you can choose to redeem your rewards, either partially or in full. If you’d like to save your points for next time and pay for your travel booking in full, you can also use your card and score those bonus rewards. Here’s a glimpse at the elevated earnings you’ll enjoy for a limited time on travel portal bookings from a few of Citi’s best credit cards :

Final verdict

Citi is incentivizing cardholders to take advantage of its new travel portal. You’ll have until the end of 2024 to earn up to 5% cash-back rewards on select travel bookings through the portal, making the Citi Double Cash Card a top choice for anyone looking to earn high rewards on booking travel, especially who prefer a no-annual-fee card over one with travel perks but also a carrying cost.

Merchant Classification for Rewards Categories

Merchants are assigned a merchant category code ("MCC"), which is determined in accordance with Visa/Mastercard/American Express procedures based on the kinds of products and services the merchants primarily sell. Citi does not control the assignment of these codes and is not responsible for the codes used by merchants. When you use your card to make a purchase, Citi is provided an MCC for that purchase. Citi groups similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers. Sometimes you may expect a purchase to fit within a rewards category but, if the code assigned to the merchant wasn't grouped into that category as recognized by Citi, your purchase will not qualify for additional miles. Please also note that purchases made through mobile/wireless technology may not earn additional miles depending on how the technology is set up to process the purchase.

Citi reserves the right to determine which purchases qualify for this offer. Miles may be earned on purchases made by Primary credit cardmembers and Authorized Users. Balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler's checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions) are not purchases and do not earn miles. Miles earned will be posted to the Primary credit cardmember's AAdvantage ® account in 8-10 weeks.

4 Up to 20,000 Additional Loyalty Points:

For AAdvantage ® status qualifying year, defined as March 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024, the Primary credit cardmember will earn 10,000 additional Loyalty Points for fulfilling one of the following milestones: 1.) after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points, or 2.) after spending $40,000 in purchases that post to the cardmember's account. You can only earn the first 10,000 additional Loyalty Points once in the AAdvantage ® status qualifying year of March 1, 2023 - February 29, 2024.

Additionally, if in that same qualifying year, the Primary credit cardmember earns 90,000 Loyalty Points, the Primary credit cardmember will be awarded an additional 10,000 Loyalty Points. Total additional Loyalty Points that can be earned through this benefit is 20,000 in one qualifying year.

Starting on March 1, 2024, and going forward, the Primary credit cardmember will earn 10,000 additional Loyalty Points after earning 50,000 Loyalty Points each qualifying year. If in that same qualifying year, the Primary credit cardmember earns 90,000 Loyalty Points, the Primary credit cardmember will be awarded an additional 10,000 Loyalty Points. Total additional Loyalty Points that can be earned through this benefit is 20,000 in one qualifying year.

A Primary credit cardmember may earn up to 20,000 additional Loyalty Points only once each qualifying year, even if the credit cardmember has more than one Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard account. Up to 20,000 additional Loyalty Points earned are in addition to any Loyalty Points earned for purchases made on the credit card. Purchases exclude returned goods or services, traveler's checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions). Purchases made through additional credit cards on the Primary credit cardmember's account (Authorized Users) will count toward the Primary credit cardmember's qualifying spend.

Additional Loyalty Points earned as a result of this benefit will typically be posted to the Primary credit cardmember's AAdvantage ® account 8-10 weeks after meeting either the Loyalty Points or spend requirements. Loyalty Points only count toward status qualification for the AAdvantage ® program. Loyalty Points earned through this benefit will not count toward AAdvantage ® Million Miler™ status. Loyalty Points cannot be redeemed for award travel, AAdvantage ® miles or any other AAdvantage ® program awards. AAdvantage ® program status requirements and balance are available at aa.com/newaadvantage.

5 Up to $120 Lyft Credit:

Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers may participate in Lyft and Mastercard's Take 3 Get $10 program ("Program"), by using their Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard to pay for the full amount or partial amount of three (3) Eligible Rides in a calendar month. After taking 3 Eligible Rides in a calendar month, you will then receive a $10 Lyft credit ("Credit"). Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive a credit of up to $120 annually. All rides must be paid for with an eligible Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard. Limit one Credit per calendar month per Lyft account. An "Eligible Ride" is any Lyft ride type, excluding business rides and bicycle and scooter rental rides. Valid only in the USA. Whether a ride qualifies as an Eligible Ride for purposes of the Credit will be determined in Lyft's sole discretion. Credits expire 30 days after application. By participating in the Program, you agree to these terms and Lyft's Terms of Service ( https://www.lyft.com/terms ), and you agree that Lyft and Mastercard may share your information for the purpose of tracking and processing the Credit and may use anonymized, aggregated data for business analytics and offer optimization. Credits may take up to 2 days to be applied to your Lyft account.

6 Up to $120 Grubhub Statement Credit:

Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive a statement credit of up to $10 per monthly billing statement (for a total of up to $120 every 12 monthly billing statements) on eligible purchases made at Grubhub. There is no minimum purchase requirement to earn the statement credit(s). Eligible purchases include transactions, tips, taxes, and fees charged directly on grubhub.com , seamless.com and the Grubhub and Seamless mobile applications. Orders placed using the campus dining feature on Grubhub and gift card purchases are not eligible.

Statement credit(s) will appear on your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard monthly billing statement within 8-10 weeks from when the transaction was posted on your card account. One credit per monthly billing statement per card account. Applicable terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. To be eligible for this benefit, your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard card must be open and in good standing at the time of statement credit fulfillment.

Merchant Classification Codes

Merchants are assigned a merchant category code ("MCC"), which is determined in accordance with Visa/Mastercard/American Express procedures based on the kinds of products and services the merchants primarily sell. We don't control the assignment of these codes and are not responsible for the codes used by merchants. When you use your card to make a purchase, we're provided an MCC for that purchase. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of identifying your spend for statement credits. Sometimes you may expect a purchase to fit within a category, but if the code assigned to the merchant wasn't grouped into that category, as recognized by Citi, your purchase amount will not be eligible for a statement credit.

7 Up to $120 Avis ® or Budget Car Rental Statement Credit:

Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive a statement credit of up to $120 every calendar year when purchases of up to $120 or more made at Avis ® or Budget car rentals or both are charged to your card account. The credit will be awarded on car rental spend that is inclusive of time and mileage, taxes, purchases, and other fees.

This statement credit only applies to Avis or Budget brands at participating locations. Car rentals not paid for directly with Avis or Budget will not qualify; for example, car rentals purchased through travel agencies, discount travel sites, vacation clubs, tour operators, or as part of a package offered by merchants, such as cruise lines and railways, will not qualify. The purpose of the car rental must be for driver and passenger transportation. Merchants that provide RV rentals or vehicle rentals for the purpose of hauling are not included in this category.

Statement credit(s) will appear on your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard monthly billing statement from Citi within 8-10 weeks from when the transaction was posted on your card account. One credit per card account. Applicable terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. To be eligible for this benefit, your Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard card must be open and in good standing at the time of statement credit fulfillment.

8 TSA/GE Statement Credit:

  • Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive World Elite Mastercard credit cardmembers are eligible to receive one statement credit up to $100 per account every four years for either the Global Entry or the TSA PreCheck ® program application fee. Credit cardmembers must charge the application fee to their Citi ® / AAdvantage ® Executive credit card to qualify for the statement credit. Credit cardmembers will receive a statement credit for the first program (either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® ) to which they apply and pay for with their eligible card, regardless of whether they are approved for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® . Please allow 1-2 billing cycles after the qualifying Global Entry or TSA PreCheck ® fee is charged to the eligible account for the statement credit to be posted to the account. Only fees associated with either the Global Entry or the TSA PreCheck ® application fee will be eligible towards the statement credit.
  • For information on Global Entry, visit globalentry.gov . For information on TSA PreCheck ® , visit tsa.gov .
