  • You tend to score more on later levels as the number of stones to match and the time limit both increase.
  • Each pair of stones you remove from the playing field is worth 100 points.
  • Each second you have remaining when you beat a level is worth 10 points.
  • Hints cost 200 points.
  • Manual shuffles cost 300 points.
  • You can play the boards in any order.
  • Whenever you beat a level you then go to the next sequential level.
  • The casual mode level select screen shows your best time on each board.
  • Using hints or shuffles impacts your level score, but does not adversely impact your level time.
  • Gameplay is similar to Journey mode, except you can match flags in both groups together.
  • Each level gives you 5 minutes to complete it.
  • The game saves your best level time.
  • You can go back and replay any previously beat level to try to finish it faster.
  • While the other 2 game modes are both Mahjongg Solitaire, this game mode is Mahjongg Slide.
  • Stones move in the direction you push them until they either run into another stone or run into the edge of the board.
  • You can slide any stone an unlimited number of times.
  • Identical stone pairs are removed from the game when they collide into each other, or when they both come to rest in adjacent positions.
  • The game is suited for players who like Mahjongg Solitaire games.
  • The game has no adult themed content.

Mahjong Journey

Mahjong is a classic style memory and matching game that has become popular among a lot of mobile gaming platforms. There are several alternately themed versions of the game, and the gameplay is usually the same or similar. One of the most recent versions of the game is Mahjong Journey. Like the original game, the player starts off by looking at a screen set up with a few layers of tiles overlapping one another. Also like the original, the tiles have all sorts of different images on them when the player clicks or taps on them. The difference in this version is that there are several levels, each themed based ln a different city. The overall object of the game is to tap and match two images at a time before the clock stops ticking. Once you have matched two of the same images, those tiles will disappear from the board and free up a few tiles on the second layer. However, there will be a need to stop and think before the player starts clicking on all of the exposed tiles just because they know what image is underneath. This game is made to test one's logic and patience, so the catch is that the player must pay attention to where the tiles are located. If the player clicks or taps on the wrong tile at any point, this could hinder the chance of progressing any farther in the game, because some of the matching tiles are already trapped underneath the top layer, and once you have no more matches, the game is void and the player has to reset. This game is appropriate for all ages, so the kids are safe to play. You can take turns playing the game or play it together. Either way, it is a fun, excellent way to pass the time.

Mahjong Journey: Tile Match Guide: Tips, Tricks & Strategies to Dominate Every Level

By: Author Philip Reyes

Posted on Last updated: March 5, 2023

Whether it is for gambling or pure, clean entertainment, Mahjong has remained one of the most popular tile-based games around the world. From its conception back in the 19 th century, and its spread throughout the world in the early 20 th century, Mahjong has since evolved to include a plethora of variants, giving rise to a diverse selection of rules to consider with each variant.

Mahjong Journey: Tile Match is a Mahjong Solitaire game, also known as electronic or computerized mahjong given that it is easier and more commonly enjoyed on a computer rather than played using actual tiles. Mahjong Journey: Tile Match is a single-player adventure where a player’s goal is to remove all tiles on the board by matching pairs of tiles.

mahjong journey tile match cover

As simple as it sounds, the solitaire part of this mahjong variant will only let you move open tiles much like you can only reveal and move the top cards in a pile in a game of solitaire. Instead of the usual layout used for conventional Mahjong Solitaire games, Mahjong Journey: Tile Match provides unique layouts for each level you play in, with the initial ones not fully utilizing all 144 tiles.

Seeing Mahjong Journey: Tile Match as a match-2 puzzle in contrast with the conventional match-3 puzzle genre of games makes it all seem too easy. As you are introduced to the simple gameplay mechanics during your first dive into its world, the initial levels will likewise leave a first impression of how almost effortlessly you can complete levels. As you move further into the levels, however, you will inevitably feel the level of challenge increase as you find yourself having more long pauses to find open tiles to match.

mahjong journey tile match levels

If you have reached levels that seem impossible for you to clear or if you have just started your adventure and want a much better understanding of Mahjong Journey: Tile Match’s rules and strategies, then be sure to stay with us. We have come up with a guide for Mahjong Journey: Tile Match, that includes useful tips, tricks, and strategies to help you dominate every level!

1. Master The Basics

You do not necessarily have to know and understand the rules of Mahjong to play and enjoy Mahjong Journey: Tile Match. Rather, having a good enough understanding of Mahjong Solitaire will most certainly improve your performance across the different levels and challenges in the game. For basics, knowing of the types and numbers of tiles available should better set your expectations as to how huge a puzzle utilizing all 144 tiles can become.

For added information as well, it is best to know each tile you can encounter in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match. Mahjong tiles are primarily categorized by sets, which are the Suited, Honors, and Bonus sets. Suited sets are further classified into Dots, sometimes called wheels; Bamboo or sticks; and Characters, which are Chinese numbers. Each subset has 36 tiles and adds up to 108 tiles in total, making up the large majority of a complete Mahjong Tile Set. Note that each subset is numbered 1 to 9, which means that each of these tiles has 4 copies in the set.

mahjong journey tile match gameplay

The Honors Set is composed of 16 Wind Tiles and 12 Dragon Tiles. Like the Suited set, there are just 4 different Wind Tiles and 3 different Dragon tiles, each with 4 copies. Finally, there are 8 Bonus Tiles subdivided into Flowers and Seasons with each subset only having 4 tiles with different designs. The Flower Tiles are introduced in one of the early tutorial levels, with emphasis on how pairs of these tiles will not look identical.

Although the rules applicable to each type of tile is different in Mahjong, each one practically works the same way in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match. However, it is still important to have a good enough level of familiarity with tile types, especially how they appear in the game. In some stages, especially in the earlier areas, you can expect less than 144 tiles used on the board making it a little more challenging to predict tiles you cannot readily see.

However, fewer tiles also mean fewer impediments toward reaching your goal, perfectly balancing the difficulty level of gameplay in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match relative to other Mahjong Solitaire Games.

mahjong journey tile match layers

Another core mechanic in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match is that the Mahjong Tiles are arranged in layers. While the rule in conventional mahjong solitaire games is 4 layers, Mahjong Journey: Tile Match will have levels with fewer layers especially in the early game to make challenges a little easier. With this, there will be hidden tiles initially and strategies will have to be adaptive with every new tile revealed moving forward.

Finally, tiles in play are also divided between open and locked tiles. Although this rule is explained early on in the tutorials, it can still be confusing for complete beginners to fully understand. For one, tiles you cannot see like the ones beneath upper layer tiles are certainly locked but just because you can see a tile does not mean it is open or free.

mahjong journey tile match upper-level tiles

To easily distinguish free tiles from locked ones, you only need to imagine if a tile can be moved to the left or the right. This means a tile that is blocked by other tiles on either of its side is locked and you will have to match those tiles first to free the tile in question.

2. Keep The Level’s Goal In Mind

The basic objective in conventional mahjong solitaire games is to find pairs of tiles and remove them from the board one after another until all tiles have been free and subsequently eliminated. Mahjong Journey: Tile Match. However, provides various goals to make some levels extra exciting and to eliminate monotony across each challenge. This is by setting goals of freeing specific tiles, which may or may not be the actual tiles we mentioned above.

mahjong journey tile match goal

In some challenges in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match, you do not necessarily have to clear the entire board. Some goals only require you to unlock and successfully pair some special tiles and some may even set you on a course toward freeing some cats. You can expect a variety of other unique goals as you venture further through the different locations in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match. What is important is that you have to pay attention to the goal and keep your focus on accomplishing it rather than clearing all the tiles.

mahjong journey tile match special tiles

It sounds a little too basic to even have to mention this but immersion in every puzzle leaves a natural tendency for players to get lost in finding pairs one after another. Although there will naturally be instances when you almost have to clear the challenge to get to your goal, there will be times when you can lunge in on the prize while leaving some tiles behind.

mahjong journey tile match incredible

3. Work On Combos For Higher Points

Although the first couple of levels in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match appears to be a breeze, you will eventually find yourself in a scenario where you will run out of moves and fail to clear the table or reach your goal. On the completion side, there are star ratings that determine your overall performance in the puzzle and while a lowly 1-star rating is enough for you to move on to the next level, there will expectedly be an insatiable itch to secure a perfect rating across every level you play in. You can always hop back to previously conquered levels to attempt bagging a higher completion grade.

Star ratings obtained after clearing a level are based on the total points you earn every step of the way. Each tile you successfully pair with another earns you points and points are likewise multiplied by the combo number you can see at the upper left side of your screen. Combos can reach as high as 5, which is critical to reach and maintain if you aim to earn a high score.

mahjong journey tile match high score

While simply matching tiles one after another increases the combo bonus, there is a countdown timer that continues to go down until after you have made another successful match. In this sense, Mahjong Journey: Tile Match does not impose a time limit similar to conventional puzzle games in that running out of it results in an instant attempt failure. Rather, what matters in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match is that you continue to match tiles as quickly as you can to increase the combo number and maintain it at its peak value with subsequent tile matches.

mahjong journey tile match combo bonus

In all honesty, this is not as easy as it sounds. Being able to seamlessly match tiles one after another within the limited period in between requires quick wits and really good eyes. Planning and strategy are, as much as possible, necessary every step of the way with the latter shifting in response to the newly unlocked or revealed tiles. Of course, there is also the factor of luck involved relative to how the tiles are arranged on the level.

4. Remember There Could Be 4 Similar Tiles

Considering the abundance of different mahjong tiles available and the basic premise of Mahjong Journey: Tile Match is to match 2 similar tiles, you can easily fall prey to thinking that there are only a pair of each tile in the current puzzle you are trying to solve. Given that most of the actual tiles in mahjong have 4 copies, it is possible to have all 4 similar tiles in a given puzzle. Additionally, remember as well that each of the 8 tiles for the flowers and the seasons may look unique, but these can likewise be paired as well.

As a beginner, even knowing about the possibility of having 4 similar tiles in the level may not seem to impact gameplay. In a sense, it can be regarded as merely 2 pairs of tiles just like any other 2 pairs on the level. However, 4 similar tiles in a level present huge opportunities to strategize around how to work on clearing the table. These opportunities, however, will only present themselves if there can be more than 3 of the same tiles accessible at the same time.

mahjong journey tile match four similar tiles

In case 3 similar tiles are free or unlocked at the same time, you can strategize around which 2 to pick and remove from the board. At this point, it should become apparent that your objective every step of the way is not just to remove tiles a pair at a time but rather to ensure that doing so will leave unlocked tiles ready for pairing. Despite some instances where the tiles in the lower levels cannot be seen, there will be times when you can see a portion of them and in these instances, you can pick the one that best promises to let you move forward.

5. Strategy Can Come From Options

There will surely be instances in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match when you only have 1 possible match to make to move forward in the puzzle. For the most part, however, you will be presented with 2 or more possible moves to make and just like in a game of Solitaire, your choice in the dichotomy or fork in the road can be a determinant of how you will fare moving forward.

mahjong journey tile match strategies

Just like in our earlier discussion on the quartet of similar tiles, having available options to choose from allows you to strategize. Therefore, in contrast with simply matching tiles one after another, a quick yet tactical determination and examination of potential moves should be performed. Choosing the most promising move to make relative to the tiles that can be unlocked or freed by the move you make matters a lot in every subsequent step through the level.

On one hand, a good choice to make is to go for the match option that leaves more open tiles for your subsequent moves. On the other, you can prioritize going for the matching tile you need, especially for a pestering top-level tile that gets in the way of other tiles you need to free. In any case, make it a habit to see beyond the first possible match you see and despite there being a countdown timer as to how long the combo multiplier will last, there should be enough time to look for alternatives if you think fast and act even faster.

mahjong journey tile match moves

Although strategy in this sense relies on the presence of choices relative to tile matches you can make, keep in mind that you can begin forming a strategy as soon as you see the board and before you make any moves. It will certainly take a long while to master a strategic approach to Mahjong Journey: Tile Match but having an idea of how to approach from the get-go and prioritizing tile matches based on perceived needs and benefits is possible.

Well, there is such a thing as luck involved in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match as well but beyond sound strategy and quick wits, Mahjong Journey: Tile Match also offers additional help you can count on if push comes to shove.

6. Exercise Prudence In Using Your Boosters

Mahjong Journey: Tile Match expectedly does not leave you to take on challenging puzzles all on your own as there are boosters you can turn to when the risk of failing to finish a puzzle and losing a heart becomes evident. Boosters are like magic tools you can utilize to aid you in a variety of ways. However, tools are consumable and are rather expensive since gems are not as easy to earn. Boosters, however, can be earned from accomplishing feats or partaking in special events.

mahjong journey tile match inventory

It almost seems natural, especially for complete beginners and newer players to use their consumables sparingly in any puzzle game. Although we recommend employing a prudent approach towards utilizing these boosters, we likewise encourage you to use them if doing so will ensure victory in a puzzle that would be difficult for you to clear otherwise.

There are 6 different boosters you can use in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match and knowing what each one does should lead you to understand the best time to use them. You can check your supply of boosters through the bag icon at the bottom of the screen.

Even as a beginner, you can surely spot matching tiles easily in the early levels especially since there are only a few tiles on the board early on. Once you are situated in a scenario where there are overwhelming numbers of tiles present, it can be hard to quickly distinguish free matching tiles. The Hint (lightbulb) booster will highlight a pair of matching tiles for you. Without any notice that there are no moves left, you can be certain that there is at least a pair of tiles that this booster can point out.

In case distinguishing between free and locked tiles still confuses you and you are having a difficult time finding them, you can use the Eye Booster. This will show a maximum of 10 tiles that are open or free without necessarily marking which ones form a pair. The Super Firecracker Booster is a powerful booster that can instantly clear 5 pairs of tiles from the board. It would be a shame to use this though if there is only a pair available.

mahjong journey tile match out of moves

The tool that we consider to be the most important is the Shuffle (cycling arrows) Booster. This powerful tool allows you to shuffle all available tiles on the board if no moves are available. In essence, this saves you from failing to clear the puzzle and losing a heart.

The Undo Booster, on the other hand, is often not as practical in our opinion. This booster will simply put back the last pair of tiles that you cleared. If you happen to realize that you just made a wrong move, then this is the booster to use. Finally, the Frost (snowflake) Booster not only lets you freeze the multiplier but also raises it to 5 before freezing it for the next 5 pairs you match.

7. Take Advantage Of The Time Freeze Cheat

Most puzzle games are made challenging or even more challenging by the presence of countdown timers or similar limitations that pressure players into deciding fast and becoming prone to making mistakes in the process. Although countdown timers apply in Mahjong Journey: Tile Match in such a way that it drains your combo multiplier back to 1 and does not instantly lead you to fail the level, it can rob you of points you could earn, which is a requisite to earn stars.

Well, even a snail-paced approach and a consistent level 1 combo meter can lead to a successful completion of the puzzle. Just don’t expect to get anything more than a 1-star rating. However, even a slow and careful pace of finding and choosing the best pair of tiles to eliminate first can still lead to a “no moves left” scenario, and if you have no Shuffle Boosters in hand, then that means you will have to retry the level again.

mahjong journey tile match time freeze cheat

Time is a crucial aspect of Mahjong Journey: Tile Match and any way to slow it down or freeze it tilts any challenge’s outcome in your favor. Fortunately, Mahjong Journey: Tile Match provides a pause button on the puzzle screen just at the upper right corner and any device you play on should have a means of taking a screenshot.

The start of the puzzle stands as the best time for you to prepare how to go about matching tiles but once you have cleared your first pair, you would want to move fast to keep on racking up combo points and increasing the multiplier, ultimately keeping it at level 5.

Once you have selected your first couple of pairs, you need to thoroughly plan out the next set of moves so if you are itching for that 3-star rating, then you should take a screenshot and pause your game. You can normally take a screenshot on an Android device by pressing the power button and the volume down button simultaneously while the volume up button and side button do the same trick on an iOS device.

mahjong journey tile match time freeze cheat 2

You should then hit the pause button, minimize the app and check your screenshot in your device’s gallery. Mahjong Tips and Tricks

  • Before making your first move in Mahjong Solitaire, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the board layout. You will certainly find some good opening moves. Note the special Mahjong tiles (Seasons and Flowers) locations - these ones can be a great help.
  • Always try to match pairs which lead to opening up most new tiles. There are pairs which don't open anything new - it would be a good idea to hold them in reserve and match with another tiles.
  • If you see three identical tiles which are free to match - either choose a pair which opens up most new tiles or look for a quick ways to free the fourth one and match all 4.
  • If you see four identical and free tiles - you're in luck! Match those combinations immediately.
  • Matching tiles on long horizontal line edges should be your priority as leaving those long lines will cause problems very soon.
  • Tall stacks of tiles are another key priority in Mahjong Solitaire games - not only they are hard to take apart but they can also contain two identical tiles one under another. If there are no such tiles outside the stack - you're out of luck.
  • Don't hesitate to use helpful TheMahjong.com features such as Undo and Hint.

Cracking the Puzzle: A Comparison of Classic Mahjong and Mahjong Solitaire

Classic mahjong and mahjong solitaire differ in several key aspects. Classic mahjong is a traditional Chinese game played with four players, aiming to collect winning tile combinations. It uses 144 tiles, including characters, bamboos, circles, winds, dragons, and additional tiles such as flowers and seasons.

On the other hand, mahjong solitaire is a single-player game where the player aims to clear all tiles from the board by finding pairs of identical tiles. This version of the game uses the same set of tiles as classic mahjong, but the goals and rules are significantly different.

Various layout types in mahjong solitaire add uniqueness and diversity to the game. From classic to more complex and non-standard forms, each layout offers unique challenges and strategies for clearing the board. These diverse configurations not only increase complexity but also allow players to explore new strategic approaches to the game. Such variety makes mahjong solitaire not only an engaging puzzle but also an excellent way to train cognitive abilities such as spatial perception and planning.

The main difference between the two versions lies in the number of players and the gameplay. Classic mahjong requires strategic thinking, the ability to analyze opponents' actions, and plan one's moves in advance. Mahjong solitaire focuses on visual memory and the ability to quickly find matching tiles.

The complexity of classic mahjong varies depending on the players' experience and the complexity of the chosen combination for victory. Mahjong solitaire offers various difficulty levels based on the initial tile layout and constraints on time or moves.

Both versions of mahjong develop attention, concentration, and cognitive abilities, but each does so in its own way, offering unique challenges and gameplay.

G5 Store™: Mahjong Games

Sheriff of mahjong®: tile match, emperor of mahjong®: connect pair matching puzzle, pyramid of mahjong: master tile matching puzzle, mahjong journey®: tile match, mary’s mahjong: city building, what is mahjong.

Mahjong , also often misspelled as majong, is a fun and popular tile match game that was originally created in 19th-century China. There are several variants of mahjong games out there, yet the most popular version that received the most digital adaptations is mahjong solitaire, also known as Shanghai Mahjong. As the name suggests, it's a single-player puzzle whose gameplay mechanic revolves around players removing pairs of same-type tiles from the game board each turn until there are no tiles left. Despite the simple mechanics, mahjong requires a lot of strategic thinking from players and a bit of luck.

The first computer versions of this puzzle started coming out in the 1980s, and the popularity of these titles has kept growing to this day. Nowadays, you can find a mahjong game for PC with almost any theme, adventure storyline, and complexity level. There are literally hundreds of them on the market, and most of them are available to download and play for free.

If you’re looking for a relaxed, meditative casual genre that goes well with your morning coffee or makes your lunch break more entertaining, make sure to check out the assortment of mahjong titles from G5, we’ve got a few fun games to choose from!

Why are Mahjong games so popular on PC?

While mahjong video games are popular in general across numerous platforms and in recent years have made a breakthrough on mobile devices, PC titles of the genre still remain in high demand among players. There are several reasons for this, so let’s take a closer look at each of them.

First of all, games for PC offer more comfort thanks to the generally bigger screens compared to any mobile devices like phones or tablets. Modern computer screens usually range between 15 and 30+ inches in diagonal and offer a high-resolution picture that's easy on the eyes, to say the least. The size of the screen and the details of the game elements are particularly important for people with impaired vision who may have trouble dealing with smaller icons on smaller screens.

Second, your PC can house both your work and your entertainment, so there’s no need to lose your attention span by switching from one device to another. It’s easier to control how much time you allocate to gaming when you play on the same device you work on. For example, if you play games on your phone, there's a high chance that during your playtime or after it, you’ll get distracted by a social media notification, a message, or something else that will take you into another app and eventually eat up your time. Keeping your work and play to one device, your PC, allows you to avoid these distractions and get more done!

Last but not least, the PC versions of G5 games available for free through the G5 Store offer a ton of additional bonuses compared to versions of games you can download and install from various app stores. These include regular gifts, special limited offers, discounts, and more. So when you opt to play on your computer, you increase the amount of goodies received for free and expand your options in the game stores.

Mechanics of the games

Modern mahjong solitaire games offer a variety of engaging mechanics that keep players coming back for more, and these can differ slightly from title to title, but they can be grouped by type. Let’s take a look at the most popular ideas used in most f2p apps for PC.

At the start of a game, levels may look easy and the right winning moves may seem obvious. However, later on in the adventure, even the most seasoned players will encounter challenging and tricky setups that’ll have anyone scratching their head. So, if you feel stuck or just can’t figure out the next move, there are various power-ups to help you get rolling. The most common ones found in almost any mahjong game out there include hints that show you one or several pairs of tiles that can be removed, shuffles that randomly rearrange the current tiles so you can get a fresh perspective, and the more powerful bonuses that simply remove the next five pairs of tiles from the board for you. Individual power-ups and their effect will differ from game to game, even in G5 titles, so to get a better understanding, make sure to download and play some of the games.

Collections

In many mahjong games, you'll encounter a collection mechanic. This involves the task of gathering specific items as you progress in the game. These items are earned as rewards when you complete levels, alongside experience points and in-game currency. You typically need to gather about 5 or 6 different items to complete a collection. When you collect all the items in a set, you'll be rewarded with special bonuses, progress further in the game's story, and experience a great sense of accomplishment. This feature encourages you to explore the game thoroughly, replay levels to find any missing items, and enjoy a longer-lasting and more satisfying gaming experience.

Progression

Single-player games usually offer various ways to acknowledge a player’s progress, and mahjong solitaire titles are no exception. Most games have this in the form of an engaging storyline filled with interesting characters, unexpected plot twists, and page-turner intrigue. The story isn’t exactly a gameplay element because the actual mahjong levels are just about solving logical puzzles, yet it ties together the whole experience, making the game not just a set of individual brain teasers but a continuous captivating adventure. Other examples of progression mechanics include so-called unlocks: new tiles and tile layouts that become available once a player reaches a certain level or meets any other special requirements like gathering a certain collection.

Challenges and Social

Whether you’re a competitive try-harder or just a casual mahjong enjoyer, you know how a sense of accomplishment feels when you unlock a new achievement or get the highest score in a certain mini-game. That’s why almost all mahjong games offer challenges of different nature: either timed events where you compete against the clock to score the most points and claim prizes or community events where you compete against other players. These mechanics always add some spice to the standard mahjong gameplay.

Here are the basic and most common rules of Mahjong Solitaire video games:

The main objective of mahjong solitaire is to clear a board filled with tiles by matching pairs of identical tiles. The game typically starts with a preset layout of tiles arranged in various patterns, and your goal is to remove all the tiles to complete the game.

Standard tile sets usually consist of about 100-150 tiles. These tiles are divided into different categories represented by specific symbols. Some of the imagery on tiles can be generic, like circles, triangles, and other geometric shapes, while others will be thematic to the title at hand. For instance, in a game about the Wild West and frontier exploration, some of your tiles will feature symbols like cowboy boots, prairie animals, and revolver pistols, while in a game about ancient Egypt, you’ll encounter tiles with scarab beetles, ankhs, and other appropriate symbols.

Matching Pairs

To remove tiles from the board, you need to find and match pairs of identical tiles. Tiles can only be matched if they are free, meaning they aren't blocked by other tiles on the left or right side. The tile must be exposed or able to slide out of its position without disturbing other tiles.

In a typical mahjong game, you select two tiles by clicking or tapping them. If they're a valid pair (the symbols on them are identical), they'll be removed from the board. Your aim is to continue this process, clearing pairs of tiles until there are no more tiles left on the board. The game ends when you successfully clear all the tiles.

Tile Layouts

Mahjong solitaire games feature a wide variety of tile layouts or patterns with different levels of complexity. Some layouts are relatively straightforward, while others are more challenging, requiring careful planning and strategy to clear all the tiles. These layouts can include shapes like pyramids, turtles, dragons, and many others.

While mahjong games often don't focus on scoring in the traditional sense, they do tend to motivate you to remove pairs of tiles in quick succession. For example, several G5 mahjong games offer a mechanic that greatly increases your chances of finding collection items on levels for removing 5 or more pairs of tiles promptly one after another.

Mahjong solitaire offers a relaxing yet mentally stimulating gaming experience, making it a beloved choice for players seeking a combination of strategy, puzzle, and entertainment. Whether you're a seasoned mahjong enthusiast or new to the game, the basic rules remain consistent across various G5 games offered on our website, providing an enjoyable and accessible puzzle-solving experience.

The scenery changes as you get closer to completing the game board. Visually, this Mahjong app is the most impressive one on this list.

The game introduces maps for each board game level. You select a level to load the game board. It has in-game monetization, where you spend premium currency on boosters to shortcut your way to victory. None of that's required to finish any level.

Mahjong Solitaire

Mobilityware continues to deliver with classic mahjong.

MobilityWare has a collection of card games, including Solitaire. The same publishers have released an app focused on Mahjong (Mahjong Solitaire). Similar to the other apps, ads display while you play, generally at the top of the screen. You can also access a shuffle, hint, and undo button. If you prefer a simplistic gaming experience, reduce the animations and tile highlighting and outlining inside the game settings.

To eliminate ads, subscribe in-app or download the version included in Google Play Pass. MobilityWare keeps the playing experience consistent across its other games. Downloading this Mahjong app is a safe bet if you've dabbled with other MobilityWare apps.

Mahjong Infinite

A wonderful rendition of a landscape-based mahjong app.

Mahjong Infinite supports landscape mode, and it does it well. Mahjong Infinite offers simplicity in its gameplay and structure. You can select any level or jump back into the game you were playing. You can also customize brightness, sound effect volume, and background music (though the music is peaceful). Like other apps, you can change the tileset and background art. The Mahjong-inspired app doesn't do anything different compared to other Mahjong apps, but sometimes, not breaking the formula is the way to go.

Mahjong Infinite supports ads, but they are at the bottom of the screen, away from the game view. As long as these ads don't obstruct your view of the Mahjong board, it's acceptable.

Riichi Mahjong

Practice makes perfect in a matching game.

Sometimes, we don't need all the bells and whistles to learn traditional Mahjong, especially when you're trying to get used to the Japanese version of Mahjong (also called Riichi Mahjong). Other times, we benefit more from practicing using a simulator before diving into real matches.

This is where Riichi Mahjong shines as one of the best Mahjong games. It's a simulator app for Japanese Mahjong. The only downside is that it's somewhat bare. It has limited AI opponents, and most of the fun gaming experience comes from competing in multiplayer. Otherwise, the app is a fantastic choice to learn the traditional Japanese Mahjong ruleset without stress.

Mahjong soul, a modern-day japanese version of mahjong.

We covered many Mahjong games using the traditional Chinese rules. Mahjong, with the Japanese ruleset, plays differently. The pacing is different in Riichi Mahjong. You're enticed to play slower and deliberately to acquire a winning hand. Mahjong Soul features the Japanese ruleset, and the app is published by Yostar, the company responsible for localizing some of the best gacha games on Android.

Mahjong Soul is a great entry point for experiencing the differences between the traditional Chinese and Japanese rulesets while picking up on the Japanese playing style. It feels like playing Mahjong in an anime while offering beautifully anime-inspired graphics as a perk. The app provides all the opportunities to play and practice Riichi Mahjong leisurely and competitively. You can play matches against AI, your friends, or people worldwide in ranked tournaments. If you're ready to show off your skills and gameplay, Mahjong Soul might be the app to try.

Reliving history with Mahjong on Android and iOS

Mahjong is one of those games that brings matching tiles to life. The game has been around since the mid-1800s and has spread like wildfire in China, starting in Shanghai and Beijing. Now, you can play the famous puzzle game on your computer, phone, and tablet. It's astonishing to see a game with such a deep history still alive today. If taking a trip down memory lane is your thing, you'll find many great retro ports on Android.

HOW TO PLAY

The Mahjong game has two different versions: the traditional Asian version, which is a game for 4 players, and Mahjong Solitaire, which is always played by one person and is mostly popular in the West, this is the game you can play online on Mahjong-Game.com.

When you start, the Mahjong Solitaire game appears as a board with 144 tiles arranged on top of one another in the shape of a pyramid. The tiles all have different characters and images on them. If you look carefully, you’ll see that some of them are exactly the same, this is because each image appears 4 times in the game. The goal of Mahjong is to combine the tiles with matching images. In other words, you are looking for two pairs in each series. There are two exceptions: the flowers series and the seasons series. There are 4 tiles in each of these series, all of which only appear once in each game, so it is not possible to match them precisely. Instead, you need to match the tiles in the series, such as summer and spring or autumn and winter.

According to the rules of Mahjong, it’s not possible to simply match and eliminate any tile that appears on the board. You can only combine tiles that meet the following conditions:

  • A tile can only be selected if there are no other tiles on top of it
  • A tile cannot be selected if it has other tiles on either side of it
  • You can only remove a tile if it is free on at least one side

A mahjong board on which the rules of the game are explained using connecting lines

If you trace the green line 1 in the picture above, you can see that both of these tiles are free on at least one side, this means these tiles can be combined and eliminated. The tiles indicated by line 2 are also free on one side, so they can be eliminated as well.

It’s a different story with the tiles indicated by the red lines. If you look at line 3, you can see that only one tile is free, the other tile is blocked by two other tiles and so it cannot be selected. To be able to remove it, you first need to eliminate the adjacent tiles. Line 4 points to two tiles that are each free on one side. However, you can see that one of them has another tile on top of it, so it cannot be removed.

You continue matching and eliminating tiles until you have cleared the board. This gets easier as the game progresses, as there are fewer and fewer tiles available and fewer open pairs to search for. Sometimes, you will not be able to match any more tiles, this can happen if there are two paired tiles on top of one another; the bottom tile will then not be visible and cannot be selected. The game will then automatically mix the tiles, so you can continue playing. There are also a few tools available to help you play:

  • Mix: shuffles all the tiles so that they end up in different positions and new pairs become available.
  • Hint: if you cannot see any matching pairs, you can use the hint tool to generate a suggestion. But beware that the hint may not be the best move; it is usually the first available open pair that the game finds.
  • Undo: you can use Undo at any time to go back one step. Use this option if you have made a mistake or want to see what is under another tile.

Mahjong Tips and strategies

It is often assumed that winning at Mahjong is all about luck. But if you apply the right strategies, you will see that you can solve the puzzle more often and more quickly. Our game always has at least one solution, so every Mahjong puzzle can be solved. Here are a few tips and strategies:

Look ahead: study the whole board before making your first move and try to identify as many matching pairs as possible. Next, plan your moves ahead as far as possible and see which open pairs it is best to eliminate to free up new pairs. First, select pairs that are blocking the greatest number of other tiles. For example, at the start of the game, the top tile on the pyramid is blocking 4 other tiles at the same time, so it’s a good idea to eliminate this one first. You can also use the Undo button to plan ahead: eliminate open pairs and see what is under these tiles. If the tiles underneath them are no use, then undo the move and look for a better option.

A Mahjong game with open triples in which the best choice is indicated by letters

Triples: If you find three identical tiles that are free, carefully scan the board for the best move. In the example above, there are three free tiles with a green bird. Now, check what combination you can play to release the greatest number of other tiles. You can see that C is not blocking any other tiles, as the one next to it is already free on the right-hand side. So the best option is to combine A and B to release two new tiles.

Clear the top layers: The pyramid is made up of 5 layers, so sometimes several tiles are piled on top of one another. The rules of Mahjong state that you cannot select a tile if there is another tile on top of it; a stack of 5 will contain 4 unusable tiles. So do not leave stacks of tiles on the board if possible, but try to eliminate the top layers to create a flatter board.
