We’re living in the age of “ Barbie ,” and nowhere has that been more evident than the custom fashions Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal curated for the billion-dollar grossing movie’s press tour.

Since debuting the first look at “Barbie” at CinemaCon in April 2022, Robbie has rocked Barbiecore styles on nearly every red carpet and press appearance (most recently stunning in custom Armani inspired by 1977’s Superstar Barbie at the Golden Globes ), all of which will now be commemorated in the fashion photo book “Barbie: The World Tour.”

The press tour for “Barbie” sent Robbie, writer-director Greta Gerwig, and the cast on a summer world tour, with stops in Toronto, Canada; Sydney, Australia (Robbie is from Queensland); Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Los Angeles, California; and London, England. At each of these stops — and at the airports — Mukamal sourced or commissioned dozens of outfits that were a nod to a look worn by the original doll.

But when the “Barbie” press tour was cut short due to the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, a press release announcing the book explains, Robbie and Mukamal “worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.”

Vogue recently touted Robbie’s “Barbie” wardrobe as confirmation that “method dressing is here to stay,” but, for Variety’s recent cover story saluting LuckyChap as 2023 showpeople of the year, Variety posited that, in some ways, the looks were an extension of her vision as a producer.

In her eyes, the “experience” began the moment paparazzi captured her and Ryan Gosling filming a scene on the Venice Boardwalk, roller blading in ‘80s-style multi-colored spandex and neon yellow kneepads. Onscreen, Barbie is wrestling with the discomfort of being perceived for the first time and Robbie, too, was aware that they were being watched.

“That’s when we started entertaining the audience,” she explained. “We started crafting the marketing campaign before shooting began. It needs to build to crescendo, to have mystery. All the things that you’d put into a narrative story, we should be looking at that holistically for the campaign too.”

And promoting the movie is part of that experience.

“Our vision of ‘Barbie,’ both as a character and the movie, is joyful and unapologetic,” Robbie concluded. “So, here are these big, bold, joyful looks. They also have a lot of craft in them, and they are rooted in history, and brilliant designers worked really hard.”

The book hits shelves on March 19, from Rizzoli publishing, and features a foreword by Edward Enninful, introduction by Margaret Zhang and an afterword by “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

Come on Barbie, let's go ... to the movies!

The Barbie press tour has officially commenced and we're already counting down the days until the film's release on July 21.

On June 25, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, America Ferrera and more stars from the Greta Gerwig-directed film united as they attended a photo call for the movie at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

Keeping on theme with the movie, Robbie, a.k.a. Barbie herself, donned a pink polka dot dress as she posed next to her character's iconic pink convertible.

Meanwhile, Gosling donned his character Ken's bleached blond locks and a soft pink cardigan.

The costars previously showed off their best Barbiecore looks as they CinemaCon 2023  in Las Vegas in April, with Robbie wearing pink gingham and Gosling wearing a "Greta Gerwig" shirt in Barbie print.

The film started filming in June 2022 and we've been given many glimpses of what's to come since, including various trailers and photos of the incredible costumes .

Keep scrolling for all the fun cast photos from the press tour.

Hollywood Glam

Robbie went full Hollywood glam as she attended the Los Angeles premiere of Barbie on July 9. She sparkled in a black sequin dress that was an exact replica of the 1960s Barbie’s Solo in the Spotlight outfit.

Stepping Into the Spotlight

While on the red carpet, Robbie posed alongside Gosling, who donned a pink suit with a necklace that featured an "E" in the Barbie font as a subtle tribute to his partner Eva Mendes .

Robbie, Ferrera and Gosling were treated to a performance by a mariachi band during a Barbie event in Mexico City. The festivities also included pink confetti and a disco ball hanging from the ceiling.

It's All About the Hair

Robbie channeled Totally Hair Barbie from the '90s as she donned crimped hair and a pink minidress while promoting Barbie in Mexico City. During the event, she also posed alongside Gosling, who continued his trend of wearing Ken-approved pastel outfits.

Day to Night Barbie

While doing press for Barbie in South Korea, Robbie channeled the Day to Night Barbie from the '80s with a Versace suit and a rhinestone-covered phone. She then transitioned into a tulle pink dress for her "night" look.

Special Gifts

During the film's latest Seoul premiere, Ferrera, Gerwig and Robbie were each gifted with a hanbok vest that perfectly matched their outfit.

Birthday Barbie

Also during the Seoul event, Robbie was given a pink cake on stage as she celebrated her birthday.

Wearing Her Heart on Her Purse

Robbie paid tribute to yet another Barbie doll by wearing a Moschino look reminiscent of Sparkling Pink from 1964. The look was complete with a matching pink heart purse.

Robbie wore a shiny  pink metal mesh Versace dress which was inspired by an archival Versace piece originally worn by model Claudia Schiffer in 1994.

Meanwhile, Rae stunned in a hot pink dress that matched perfectly with the Barbie logo behind her on the red carpet.

Blushing in Pink

During a fan event at Westfield Sydney on June 30, Robbie had a pink monochromatic moment as she donned a pink turtleneck sweater, a chrome pink skirt and a beaded bracelet.

Bold Prints

Her costars also went for bold looks as Ferrera donned a white top and blue trousers, Rae wore a printed jacket and Gerwig donned a pink power blazer.

Classic Barbie

As the Australian native did press in Sydney, she channeled the original 1959 Barbie with a custom black and white Herve Leger dress, complete with matching heels and white sunglasses.

Barbies at Bondi

Rae, Gerwig, Robbie and Ferrera were all smiles as they did press for the movie at Icebergs Bondi in Sydney, Australia. They made sure to capture a selfie in front of the iconic Barbie pool.

Welcome to Kenada

Mathew Tsang/Getty Images

In honor of Gosling and Simu Liu's Canadian heritage, the film held a special press day in Toronto, Ontario on June 28, which they perfectly dubbed as a "Kenada" celebration. The actors wore bright pastels as they walked the pink carpet and posed for photos.

Super Sweet

Robbie looked like she was ready for summer as she donned a white halter dress by MOSCHINO that was covered in cartoon strawberries. Of course, she pulled the whole look together with striking red nail polish and white sunglasses.

Even as she was traveling, Robbie made sure to be in full Barbiecore. As she touched down in Australia on June 27, she was pictured in head-to-toe vintage Chanel and pulling along two pieces of pastel pink Steamline luggage.

Barbie Girls

The women of the Barbie film, including Kate McKinnon, Rae, director Gerwig, Robbie and Ferrera, posed for a photo in front of Barbie's pink car. While Ferrera plays a human who befriends Robbie's Barbie in the film, both McKinnon and Rae play other Barbies in Barbie Land.

A Picture-Perfect Duo

Gosling and Robbie, a.k.a. Ken and Barbie, were all smiles as they posed together on the red carpet in front of the iconic Barbie logo.

Gosling gave his best Ken smolder as he posed during the photo call. He even wore a light pink cardigan for the special occasion.

Goofing Around

Jon Kopaloff/Getty

McKinnon and Ferrera couldn't hold it together as they posed for photos together. While the Saturday Night Live alumna rocked a gray suit, the Ugly Betty actress donned a stunning white dress with lace detailing.

Hugging It Out

Robbie was seen greeting Gosling with a hug as the cast joined together on the red carpet.

Los Angeles Bound

The Barbie movie Instagram account shared this cute photo of Robbie in Los Angeles as they announced that the press tour for the film had officially kicked off on June 26. "It’s the best day ever!" they captioned the photo of Robbie wearing a pink two-piece with white sunglasses.

Going Full Barbiecore

Gosling and Robbie pulled off Barbiecore perfectly as they attended CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas in April. While Robbie wore pink gingham like her character, Gosling paired a bright pink jacket with a t-shirt that read "Greta Gerwig" in Barbie font.

A new book charts all the colourful looks worn by Margot Robbie on the Barbie press tour

In one of the most literal and dedicated forms of ' Method Dressing ' we've ever seen, Robbie's red-carpet looks throughout Barbie 's promotion – from pink Valentino polka-dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles – were inspired by outfits worn by the doll herself, expertly re-created by top designers with the help of Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal. Now, a new book, Barbie: The World Tour , pays homage to this epic feat of life imitating art, with photographs by Craig McDean charting all of Robbie's Barbie-coded outfits.

Accompanying McDean's sumptuous photography are images of original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel's Barbie fashion archives, and the designers' sketches and Polaroids from fittings. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks, the book is a unique look behind the curtain at one of the most iconic tourdrobes in recent memory.

"The work that Andrew did in bringing all these elements together – the history of Barbie, the research he did through the Mattel archives, bringing in designers who had a childhood connection with Barbie or found inspiration in her for their later careers, or even just sensing what the world in general was getting excited about and trying to create moments for them – it was amazing, and it felt like that should all be celebrated," writes Robbie.

Here, we delve into our favourite photographs from the book. 'Barbie: The World Tour' by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York, 2024) is out now.

"It wasn’t just looking into the history of Barbie and the history of Mattel but also going into the knowledge that I had already accumulated just through work and interest in these different fashion houses and understanding their signatures, their codes, the things they’re most famous for," writes Mukamal in the book, of finding the designers – and the outfits – for Robbie.

Margot Robbie as 'Day to Night' Barbie in Versace

Robbie wore this look, designed by Donatella Versace, to the Barbie premiere in Seoul. Featuring a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone, it's one of the most famous from the whole tour.

Sketches by Donatella Versace

"My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!" wrote Donatella Versace on one of her inspiration sketches for Robbie's 'Day to Night' Barbie outfit. Also pictured is a sketch of the second look Robbie wore to the Seoul premiere, which featured a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs.

A sketch by Andreas Kronthaler

text, letter

"Without Barbie, I would not be a fashion designer," reads a note by designer Andreas Kronthaler, affixed to a sketch for the Vivienne Westwood dress Robbie wore to the European Barbie premiere, held in London. On the night, Robbie wore a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990, which was made from blush satin and embroidered white tulle, which she accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Margot Robbie in Chanel

The Barbie tour was actually cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike , meaning not every look made it onto the red carpet. All were photographed, however – meaning this is one of the first looks at Robbie in a Barbie-inspired Chanel jacket and skirt.

Margot Robbie as 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie in Bottega Veneta

a person sitting in a chair

Mukamal's inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015, and featured turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules. "For an early morning talk show, we loved the idea of wearing Matthieu Blazy’s version of 'Cherry Pie Picnic' for Bottega Veneta: something surprising, our only denim look of the tour and a step away from pink," writes Mukamal in the book.

Margot Robbie’s Complete Barbie World Tour Wardrobe Gets the Art Book Treatment

Stylist Andrew Mukamal shares never-before-seen looks from the film’s press tour.

Margot Robbie in Chanel in the Barbie: The World Tour book

After the actors' strike shut down the Barbie press tour just before the movie hit theaters—with record-breaking sales at the box office—last July, the film’s star, Margot Robbie , her stylist Andrew Mukamal, and other members of Robbie’s team were having tea at Claridge's in London. "It was a celebration, but also bittersweet, because it was the end of a special and exciting moment for all of us," Mukamal remembers.

They weren't sure when they would all be together next. At that point, putting together a book-length project of Robbie's Barbie-inspired looks was a dream put on pause. Luckily, it eventually materialized into a reality.

Barbie: The World Tour , from Rizzoli, is out in the world on March 19 with 160 glorious pages of incredible images by photographer Craig McDean. The coffee-table book also includes luscious collages combining sketches and notes from the designers, images of vintage Barbie inspiration and snapshots of Robbie stunning on the red carpet.

Many of the looks featured will be familiar to anyone who gobbled up Getty Images of Robbie as she promoted her work on the Greta Gerwig-directed film. Think, for instance, of the c ustom Hervé Léger bandage dress that put a spin on Barbie's iconic black and white striped bathing suit, or Versace's interpretation of the doll's famous "Day to Night" 1985 ensemble, featuring a clunky early cell phone and all.

barbie movie world tour

Robbie in Versace

Other looks will be completely new to the reader, including the outfits that Robbie and Mukamal didn't take out on the road when tour stops were canceled for strike-related reasons. For instance, a stunning overcoat with a matching brocaded dress by Miu Miu replicating Barbie's "Evening Splendor" that Robbie was supposed to debut in Tokyo.

For Mukamal, Barbie: The World Tour, is the book he’d always dreamed of making.

Barbie: The World Tour

"As a teenager, I was obsessed with fashion images, magazines, books,” he said, reflecting on the joy of leafing through “something where you could see the references, the process, fabric swatches, handwriting, final product.” He adds, “If I were younger, this would probably blow my mind."

The beginnings of the project came about before Robbie ever stepped foot on a red carpet, as she and Mukamal were preparing for her eventual press tour. Mukamal gathered his ephemera and inspirations in a folder, including sketches and swatches; that folder became his "happy place."

barbie movie world tour

Once creative director Fabien Baron, who was also responsible for the collages, came on, he wanted to carry the idea over to the page. "It should feel like a journal, like a narrative," Baron says. "There's so much storytelling in Barbie."

The photoshoot for the book happened in just three days—post-strike, of course. McDean, Mukamal, Robbie, Baron, and set designer Stefan Beckman created environments specific to the clothing. "I approached each look as its own unique thing," McDean says. "Some looks we did more simply, and others had more layers with things like sets and props. Margot is incredible to work with because she gives you such a range of characters to capture."

barbie movie world tour

Robbie wearing Vivienne Westwood

barbie movie world tour

Robbie threw herself into the book with the gusto you might expect. Wearing Schiaparelli's "Solo in the Spotlight" black sequined gown, she gives Barbie-as-chanteuse. In Givenchy's polka-dotted "Gay Parisienne," she looks particularly doll-like, eyes wide. "When she is in work mode and she sprays her Barbie perfume on her and she's just gliding in and out of outfits, she's the first one running to set," Mukamal says. "We're all chasing after her." (Yes, Robbie has a specific perfume she wears to inhabit the spirit of Barbie. Mukamal could not confirm the brand.)

The book was produced quickly to meet the Barbie moment. "To me, it's a document," Baron says. "It's what it meant at that time, and what it did to America as a film. The timing was super crucial."

Some of that significance is summed up in the forward by former British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enniful, which explains how "it's very rare that a film traverses the globe in the way the Barbie movie has." You can also spot it in the personalized notes written on the sketches. Donatella Versace, for instance, scribbles: "My first memory of Barbie was seeing her iconic blonde hair and understanding she was a powerful woman who could be anything. A total inspiration!"

Robbie in Chanel

barbie movie world tour

These intimate contributions from designers are some of the treasures of the book. For instance, Mukamal put Robbie in a 1992 minidress by Bob Mackie for an after-party. Because he bought the dress on The Real Real for $500—a steal for that kind of find—he reached out to Mackie for an original sketch. Mackie, who has a long history with Barbie, wanted to sketch the dress anew, with Robbie in it. "Everybody else was putting Margot's head on the idea of the outfit before it was produced, before she wore it," Mukamal says. "And this was going backward with this one look, which felt so incredible."

The book perhaps is the final evolution of Robbie's journey as Barbie. After all, if you measure a real Barbie against the image of her on the cover, laid out as if in a box, you'll find they are the exact same size.

Now, turning our attention to the star-studded cast of Barbie, it boasts an enviable ensemble. As well as A-listers Robbie and Gosling, there are also roles for Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon and Nicola Coughlan, adding to the film’s allure even for those of more advanced years.

Why has Barbie been banned in Vietnam?

You may have heard that the new movie has been banned in Vietnam, and wondering why a kids-focused adventure could have caused this reaction. Well, the answer lies in the detail of a map.

In one of the scenes a very child-like map is shown which includes the South China Sea and what is known as the “nine dash line” which is disputed in Vietnam. The following news clip explains more.

Breaking: Barbie Has Entered the Real World

barbie movie world tour

Welcome to Barbie’s Dream House . Did we mention it was a fever dream? Making a Barbie movie is one thing, but making a Barbie movie directed by indie darling Greta Gerwig of Lady Bird and Little Women fame is a completely different beast. The hype built with each new plot detail, poster , and unearthed Letterboxd account we got ahead of the July 21 release. The film   has even been snatching up Hollywood celebs in its manicured plastic fists to the point where it’s getting harder and harder to keep track of them. Below, all the casting, trailer, release-date, soundtrack, world-tour, and underwear-merch details we know so far about Barbie. C’mon, jump in.

Can I get the Barbie basics?

First, we know Gerwig and her husband, Marriage Story writer Noah Baumbach, are writing the screenplay and Gerwig is directing. Margot Robbie took on the starring role of the Mattel doll after Amy Schumer dropped out over creative differences , and Ryan Gosling will play Ken. Photos and posters with both the stars have been released, and if neither of them makes your heart flutter, you’re boring!

Schumer left the project because she very specifically wanted Barbie to be an “ambitious inventor.” She dropped out before Gerwig and Baumbach came onto the project but after the studio asked her if Barbie’s invention could be a “high heel made out of Jell-O.” That was absolutely sexist but sounds fun to try on.

Before being produced by Warner Bros., the film was originally going to be produced by Sony and had “a fish-out-of-water story à la  Splash  and  Big ,   whereby Barbie gets kicked out of Barbieland because she’s not perfect enough, a bit eccentric and doesn’t fit in,” Deadline reported. In the original plot, “she then goes on an adventure in the real world and by the time she returns to Barbieland to save it, she has gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection.” While the “real world” concept has been maintained, this movie looks more like a meta-examination of girlhood and Barbie’s impact than it does like a story of individuality. While writing the script with Baumbach, Greta told CinemaCon they “we were making each other laugh all the time, and it got to a point where we were making each other cry. It got to a point where he wanted to direct, and I said, ‘Step aside!’” Star Issa Rae dropped another clue that the film was a little … high concept. Gerwig “was like, ‘I just need to explain what it is,’” Rae teased in a December 7 story . “And I’ll be 100 percent honest, when she was talking, like, it was entertaining, but I didn’t get it. I was like, ‘I don’t know what the fuck she was talking about, but whatever it is, I’m excited she’s behind it.’ And then reading it was, like, ‘Oh my God, I love her even more.’” A Barbie movie that confuses Issa Rae? Oh, we’re so in.

What is going on in the trailer?

The official Barbie trailer debuted on May 25, and it gave us, to quote the Indigo Girls (who are featured in the trailer along with Kate McKinnon, holding a Birkenstock — a clear example of strong lesbian representation), “insight between black and white.” Though, in this trailer, it’s less “black and white” than it is hot pink and every other color in the rainbow. The trailer gives us a lot of the plot, which was a big question mark previously. It turns out Barbie will follow Barbie’s journey into the real world after she begins to have very “adult” thoughts like “Do you guys ever think about dying?” In the real world, she must confront issues like the law saying that she’s not allowed to punch guys who grab her butt in the face (#JusticeForBarbie, honestly) and the fact that teen girls don’t care about her. The trailer indicates that there will be a meta-analysis of Barbie’s popularity and impact with Will Ferrell playing the CEO of Mattel, who doesn’t want Barbie in the real world, and Barbie confronting ideas about who does and doesn’t support her.

Previously, Avatar: The Way of Water audiences were treated to a teaser trailer entering a fantastical world entirely separate from Pandora — Barbieland. On December 16, Warner Bros. released the teaser for the upcoming film, which is still a bit low on plot. The teaser, above, is a reference to the ape scene from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey , giving more credence to the whole “ Barbie is going highbrow” theory. Featured in the teaser are short clips of the rest of Barbie’s world — including some recognizable faces.

Who is in the cast, and what are they up to?

Every actor you’ve heard of in the past five years is either in this movie or in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer . And they’re all Barbies, duh! Or a lot of them are, anyway. Along with the many, many Barbies of high repute is an extended cast that will play humans and other, lesser dolls, like Kens. Also Helen Mirren is the narrator. Barbie movie socials are going all out with individual character posters introducing the massive ensemble.

Margot Robbie is the Ur-Barbie, but the others include Dua Lipa, who’s contributing music to the soundtrack, as Mermaid Barbie and Issa Rae as President Barbie. Sex Education standout and Margot Robbie clone Emma Mackey is a Barbie with a Nobel Prize in physics, giving Robbie and Mackey a chance to prove they’re not actually the same person in different fonts. (Now all we need is for Samara Weaving and Jaime Pressly to join the cast for true ascendancy.) Ritu Arya is a Barbie with a Pulitzer. Hari Nef is Doctor Barbie. Sharon Rooney is Lawyer Barbie. Ana Cruz Kayne is Supreme Court Justice Barbie, and Nicola Coughlan is Diplomat Barbie. Alexandra Shipp is a Barbie who is “a celebrated author,” and Kate McKinnon is your little sister’s Barbie: choppy haircut, crayon all over her face, and “always in the splits.”

And then there are the Kens. We all know Ryan Gosling is Ken, but so are Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, and Ncuti Gatwa. None of them have jobs. Their job is being Kens. “Up until that point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within,” Ryan Gosling explained of his process at CinemaCon . If I’m being really honest, I doubted my Kenergy. I didn’t see it. Margot and Greta conjured this out of me. I was living my life and then, one day, I was bleaching my hair. Shaving my legs. And wearing bespoke neon outfits and Rollerblading down Venice Beach. It came on like a fever. Like a scarlet fever. Like a pink fever.” The wild cards in this bunch are Emerald Fennell as Midge (“She’s Midge”) and Michael Cera as Allan (“There’s only one Allan”). Ginger outcasts, our money is on these two underdogs turning evil and overthrowing Barbie society.

Finally, there are the humans: America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, and Helen Mirren as the narrator. And there’s the boy humans: CEO Will Ferrell (“Please call me mother”), Connor Swindells (“He’s like an intern or something”), and Jamie Demetriou (“He’s a suit”).

Is anyone not in Barbie ?

Apparently not. The second teaser confirmed Jon Cena, famously a WWE action figure , is also making an appearance. Even Saoirse Ronan was rumored to be joining the cast but confirmed she had a conflict .

What does the movie look like?

Well, the movie technically caused an international shortage of a shade of pink paint, so there’s that. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran also t old Vanity Fair that the beach is a crucial setting in the movie, so “Malibu Barbie is key.” In what will surely be great news for many mood-board enthusiasts, she noted that the outfits in Barbieland all use summertime pastel color combinations that riff “off the idea of a French Riviera beach in the early 1960s.” In addition to clothing items sourced by Durran’s team, Robbie’s Barbie wears some vintage pieces from Chanel, where Robbie is a fashion ambassador. As for Barbie’s boy toy? Expect to see the results of a lot of intentional shopping for retro sportswear (though Durran gives Gosling full credit for coming up with the Ken-branded underwear).

Okay, but what does it sound like?

The soundtrack is a smorgasbord of stars and styles with a common dance-pop edge. The artists performing on the album were announced on May 25, and the list includes Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Haim, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, PinkPantheress, Tame Impala, and the Kid Laroi with Barbie stars Ryan Gosling and Dua Lipa included. The album’s executive music producer is Mark Ronson, and it will be out July 21.

Dua Lipa’s song was the album’s first single. The disco-pop mermaid’s “Dance the Night,” which came out May 26, sounds like a Future Nostalgia cut, what with its ’70s string melody and syncopated rhythms. The song was first teased on Dua Lipa’s socials with a visual of Barbie feet followed by the singer herself. KAROL G and Aldo Ranks dropped the next track, “WATATI.”

And then we have “Angel” from PinkPantheress, which is a classic PinkPantheress track with the added benefit of … fiddles? How great! It’s smooth, aughts-esque, and you can totally hear the Barbie -ness while it maintains the PinkPantheress touch.

Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice then dropped a pink-pilled music video for their rap track “Barbie World,” which samples Aqua’s “Barbie Girl.” We all knew that the 1997 dance-pop hit had to end up on the soundtrack somehow.

Billie Eilish also drove her tiny car straight into Barbie World. She revealed the news through a post on social media with a black Barbie B and the song title, “What Was I Made For?” The track was released on July 13 with an accompanying music video featuring Eilish playing with toy-size versions of her own previous looks. It’s a downbeat piano ballad in the typical Eilish style, with lines like “Turns out I’m not real, just something you paid for / What was I made for?” We have to imagine it will accompany Barbie’s big moment of existential crisis, and we are so thankful that we have a movie coming out where “Barbie’s existential crisis” is something that makes sense.

Perhaps you’re looking for something a little more … upbeat. A little more … silly. With a bit more … Kenergy. In that case, we have two options for you. Sam Smith was the final artist announced for the Barbie soundtrack with “Man I Am,” a song from the POV of Ken. “And all the papers say that there’s no Ken without Barbie / But baby, there’s no woman who could possibly stop me,” the doll sings. “That’s just the man I am / Super sleazy, sexy and freaky Ken tonight.”

Luckily, there is another song that all you Kens can empathize (Ken-pathize?) with. On July 10, the film put out a preview clip of Ryan Gosling as Ken singing his number “I’m Just Ken.” We’ve seen Gosling sing and dance his way through La La Land , but this is a lot less “Ya like jazz?” and a lot more “Look at my very sexy pecs.” The song also has guitar playing by Guns N’ Roses’ Slash, in case you, for any dumb reason, doubt its pedigree. Long live Ken!

Is it true that there’s going to be a Barbie world tour?

Yes. Robbie and Gosling confirmed in a promo video that they will be bringing Barbie to eight cities: Toronto, Sydney, Seoul, Mexico City, Los Angeles, London, Berlin, and New York. Is this a press tour, a meet and greet, or some sort of traveling performance? They don’t clarify. All we know so far is that, unfortunately, Gosling is not bringing his roller blades.

Do you know where we can get Ryan Gosling’s Ken underwear?

The Barbie World Tour Will Bring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling To A City Near You

We all know that the plot of this summer's Barbie movie (in theaters July 21) revolves around Barbie and Ken swapping Barbie's Dreamhouse for the real world. (Although, if we're honest, we'd love to swap our world for Barbieland for a bit). And thanks to the newest announcement from Barbie the Movie 's Instagram, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling (who play Barbie and Ken, respectively) will be taking a trip around our world, just like their characters.

See on Instagram

"You don't have to go all the way to Barbieland to hang with Barbie and Ken," Robbie says in the promo.

"Margot and I are taking this show on the road," Gosling adds.

The film hits theaters on July 21, but the Barbie team is doing more than just one big premiere — they're doing eight premieres. Films often host premieres in different countries, allowing fans all over the world to be a part of the experience. And Barbie the Movie is no different.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will embark on a world tour that, in addition to the usual New York City and Los Angeles, includes six more cities:

  • Toronto, Canada
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Seoul, South Korea
  • Mexico City, Mexico
  • London, England
  • Berlin, Germany

Not only does the promo give us that exciting news, but it also features some amazing fashion choices, just like we've seen throughout the entire promotional process. From CinemaCon to showing the cast their own IRL Barbie dolls , the fashion choices have put creativity at the forefront. Well, creativity and pink, of course.

We're obsessed with Robbie's corset and mini skirt (a combo fit for a Barbie doll if you ask us). Gosling is also rocking pink, just a more laidback salmon that will definitely influence our next swimsuit cover up purchase.

And, just like us, the pair also has their summer packing list top of mind: "Are you packing your roller blades?" Robbie asks, to which Gosling gives her a smirk. "You know I can't roller blade in real life."

‘Barbie’ Frenzy Continues With Aqua’s 2023 ‘Barbie World Tour’

Barbie fans…”Wanna go for a ride?”

The masterminds behind the 1997 smash-hit “Barbie Girl” are heading out on the aptly-titled ‘Barbie World Tour’ this fall amid the ongoing ‘Barbie’ sensation.

Mattel’s 2023 ‘Barbie’ movie has officially surpassed $1 billion in box office sales internationally, breaking various records. You’ve probably seen promotional materials for the film everywhere — with a whopping $150 million spent on the movie’s marketing campaign, and now, the frenzy will continue.

“AMERICA…You wanna go for a ride?” Aqua, the Danish-Norweigan Europop group, asked on a social media post this week.

The U.S. trek will kick-off in Seattle on November 12, followed by gigs at venues like New Orleans’ Fillmore, the House of Blues in Chicago, and The Depot in Salt Lake City. They’ll wrap-up at Los Angeles’s Hollywood Palladium on December 20.

The chart-topping track “Barbie Girl” certainly helped put Aqua on the map in the late ’90s with their debut Aquarium — and it was even sampled in the ‘Barbie’ film under the new name “Barbie World,” recorded by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. However, the dace-pop group still has more to offer, delivering Aquarius in 2000 and Megalomania in 2011 after over a decade-long break.

Since 2016, the band has been back in action and released the single “Rookie” in 2018 and “I Am What I Am” in 2021.

For the press tour following the record-breaking release of Greta Gerwig’s award-winning, acclaimed Barbie movie, producer and star Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal immersed themselves in some of Barbie’s most iconic outfits and curated vintage pieces, then approached designers, from Giorgio Armani to Donatella Versace, to create looks inspired by the doll-size originals. Many of these looks were not seen as the official Barbie press tour was cut short—so Margot and Andrew worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Steamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.   Accompanying McDean’s sumptuous photography are original Barbie dolls from the period, a treasure trove of rare materials from Mattel’s Barbie fashion archives, and the designers’ sketches and Polaroids from fittings, layered into evocative collages by Fabien Baron, who conceived and produced the shoots and art-directed the book. With text by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, as well as handwritten contributions from the designers behind the looks (from Olivier Rousteing and Michelle Ochs to Manolo Blahnik and Jeremy Scott), this unique book blends the serious chic of high fashion with the serious fun of Barbie world—the dolls, the history, and the style that have captured imaginations for 65 years. As the press tour was cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, not all the planned press tour looks were seen. "This book is the culmination of tens of thousands of hours of work by some of the most talented and creative visionaries and designers on Earth," her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, said in a statement abut the book. "Margot and I felt compelled to share this with the world. We hope you love it as much as we do."

Mattel is excited about the book. " Barbie: The World Tour is the ultimate realization of Barbiecore, with iconic looks inspired by Barbie’s 65-years of fashion history, now brought to life by Margot and Andrew with best-in-class designers," Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, Mattel said. "It’s been inspiring to see the world follow the designs curated by Margot and Andrew in celebration of the movie, Barbie . Rich with unexpected playfulness, historic nods, and self-expression, these looks represent an exciting new take on Barbie style."

Barbie: The World Tour will be published on March 8, 2024, featuring a foreword by Edward Enninful, introduction by Margaret Zhang, and afterword by Barbie writer-director Greta Gerwig. The book features photography by Craig McDean, and text from Robbie and Mukamal, along with designers who created the Barbiecore looks.

Margot Robbie with an inset of the "Barbie: The World Tour" book

Come on Barbie, let’s go walk the red carpet.

Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal culminated a fashion-filled chapter in her career with “Barbie: The World Tour” ( $50 $39) — a book chronicling her many unforgettable “Barbie” press tour outfits .

And with Amazon’s Big Spring Sale is in full swing, the hot-off-the-presses pink coffee table book is already on sale for nearly 30% off.

“Barbie: The World Tour”

The 160-page project combines sketches, archival Barbie photos and notes from the designers with (what else?) images of Robbie all dolled up in Mukmal’s Mattel-inspired style selections, shot by famed fashion photographer Craig McDean

And while “Barbie” fanatics will recognize many of the looks — who could forget when she cosplayed 1985’s Day-to-Night Barbie , complete with a fake phone? — there’s also some never-before-seen gems from carpets cancelled amid the SAG Aftra Strike.

“This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the “Barbie” press tour in March 2023,” Mukmal wrote in an Instagram post announcing the release.

“I could have never imagined just a few months later we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams,” he added, before thanking Robbie for “bringing me on this wild ride and being the most incredible and trusting partner.”

Amazon's Big Spring Sale is HERE!

In addition to books, plenty of beauty buys are also dramatically discounted during Amazon’s Spring Sale — including some of Robbie’s standbys.

She’s shouted out Lancer Cleanser ( $90 $86) and Klorane Dry Shampoo ( $42 $19) in interviews over the years, once telling British Vogue she “can’t be without” the latter.

If you’re looking to watch the “Barbie” movie for the first time (or again, let’s be honest), it’s available on many streaming platforms.

Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal Take Vogue Inside the Making of their Barbie: The World Tour Book

They were the looks seen round the world: Margot Robbie in a mini black-and-white Hervé Léger bandage dress, cat-eye sunglasses across her face; Robbie in a fuchsia pencil skirt and matching blazer, a crystal-bedecked Judith Leiber cell-phone clutch in tow; Robbie wearing a ruffle-hem Emilio Pucci dress, long crimped hair cascading down her back. Each look, styled by Andrew Mukamal for the Barbie press tour, defined modern method dressing . Now the internet-breaking fashions are being immortalized in Barbie: The World Tour , a coffee-table book by Mukamal and Robbie, out March 19 from Rizzoli.

A few weeks ago, on a blustery afternoon in New York City, Mukamal visited the Vogue office to walk us through an advance copy of the book; Robbie joined the conversation via Zoom.

“I had the idea when I was in one of the [tour] fittings with Margot,” Mukamal says of the project. “I was collecting all these sketches and fabric swatches from designers, and I was like, ‘Wow, all of this would make the most beautiful coffee-table book.’” While Robbie was also keen to acknowledge the sartorial triumphs of all who contributed to the promotional wardrobe, that desire was heightened when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike began, abruptly cutting the tour short following a stop in London; trips to New York, Berlin, and Tokyo were canceled. “We still had a bunch of looks that didn’t get their moment,” Robbie says. “We were like, ‘Oh, that’s so sad.’ But then Andrew found a way for them to have their moment.”

A who’s who of creative talents brought the book to life: Art direction was led by Fabien Baron; Craig McDean signed on as photographer; and Edward Enninful wrote the foreword. The introduction and afterword were penned by Margaret Zhang and Greta Gerwig, respectively.

Ahead, Mukamal and Robbie share highlights from Barbie: The World Tour , a visual feast of vintage dolls, handwritten designer notes, and never-before-seen looks.

Barbie: The World Tour by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York © 2024)

Andrew Mukamal: We had a reference photo, and we thought this would be an amazing way to shoot one of the looks—Margot laying flat. Obviously, it very much references Barbie in her box. This is the Claudia Schiffer Chanel suit we had intended to wear in Tokyo, which Margot also wore in the film. She’s 12 and a half inches on the book’s cover, which is exactly how tall Barbie is. If you see the book on top of a coffee table, it’s almost like a Barbie doll lying there waiting for you to play with her. Hopefully that’s what the experience of flipping through it is like—dressing her up in different outfits and being part of the process of designing them.

Margot Robbie: The method dressing was Andrew’s genius; I definitely can’t take credit. But I did say, “If there was ever an opportunity to really have fun on a press tour with the looks, it’s now.” Because Barbie and fashion are so synonymous and because the movie is so maximalist and zany and poppy and joyful, it felt appropriate to really have fun with it.

Mukamal: This was the first big moment on the tour and in Margot’s home country, so I was basically like, She has to wear a hot, cool version of the black-and-white striped bathing suit. That would just feel so spot-on to me.

Robbie: I loved it. The Hervé Léger bandage dress was a genius way of accomplishing the swimsuit look. And Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses that go with it? It was all just so cool.

Mukamal: And the Manolo [Blahnik] mules he designed specially for this project. Working with him and his team was an absolute dream.

Robbie: What impressed me most was how much research Andrew did. His ideas were insane, but they all came from the Barbie archives and his research. It never felt like we were being too crazy because it was all rooted in something real.

Mukamal: This is also from 1959, Barbie’s first year. Hubert [de Givenchy] created this bubble hem in the fifties, which is exactly what this doll was inspired by during that period. If we were going to Paris, we obviously would have worn this there, but we weren’t; Berlin was the closest we were going to get.

Robbie: And we didn’t make it to Berlin!

Robbie: I mean, this is so Barbie.

Mukamal: It would have looked really good in paparazzi photos.

Robbie: Getting photographed on the move, the little cape trailing behind—that would have looked amazing.

Mukamal: Yeah, we were thinking about that. For a city like New York, we were like, What would look cool if you get papped on the street? And [the Carolina Herrera team] killed it. They made all the jewelry custom too.

Mukamal: [We] were going to go to Tokyo, and we were like, Maybe it would be really cool to show up there and be still serving full-on Barbie but in a more elevated and chic way. This Miu Miu is very Miuccia.

Robbie: The look is so good. The little headband! The fur trim!

Mukamal: Gigi Burris made an insane custom headband out of extra faux fur that we got from Miu Miu. And shout-out to Gigi, who made a lot of the beautiful headwear in the book. With some of these looks, you need an expert milliner like her, and there are not enough of them in the fashion industry.

Image may contain Margot Robbie Adult Person Face Head Photography Portrait Clothing Footwear Shoe and Dress

Muakamal: We had a three-day photo shoot for the book, which, to be completely honest, was pretty insane. We were really packing it in.

Robbie: We were throwing on clothes and going and going, and then at one point, we were like, “We need a picture together.”

Mukamal: We started off quite serious, both of us standing there with our arms crossed, looking into Craig’s lens. The whole day everybody’s like, “Oh, my God, Margot, you look amazing!” And the minute I get in front of the lens, it’s crickets. [ Laughs ] Then they’re like, “Maybe you should do something, Andrew?” And I was like, “What can I do? Pin her dress?” Meanwhile, it’s a perfectly fitted custom Prada dress. So I just got down on one knee and pretended to measure the length of her dress. A few snaps later, we ended up with a really cute pic.

How ‘Barbie’s’ awards season hopes (mostly) fizzled at the Oscars

Eight months ago, on an otherwise quiet July weekend, two films — Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — shared a release date and together, as Barbenheimer, became the cinematic event and cultural phenomenon of the summer. They seemingly set the stage for a pink-filled, explosive awards season.

But the recognition for the unlikely twins was hardly identical. While “Oppenheimer” pulled in 13 Oscar nominations, “Barbie” earned just eight.

While saluting the stunt community at Sunday’s ceremony, “Barbie’s” Ryan Gosling and “Oppenheimer’s” Emily Blunt — each nominated for their supporting roles in their respective films — playfully acknowledged the faceoff.

“I’m just happy we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us,” Gosling told Blunt as they took the stage.

The Oscar-nominated actor led an ensemble of 65 dancers in the live rendition of the ‘Barbie’ musical number, with Mark Ronson and Simu Liu in tow.

March 10, 2024

Continuing the bit, Blunt kept it blunt : “That’s right — it’s Ken and Kitty, just leaving all that fodder in the dust. And the way this award season’s turned out, it wasn’t much of a rivalry. So, just let it go.”

“It’s true, you guys are doing very well, congratulations,” Gosling said, channeling his character’s finesse with a burn. “But, you know, I think I figured out why they called it Barbenheimer, and they didn’t call it Oppenbarbie. ... I think you guys are at the tail end of that, because you were riding ‘Barbie’s’ coattails all summer.”

Behind every joke, there is some truth. In the end, Barbie won one of its eight nominations — original song . “Oppenheimer” won seven of its 13, including best picture, lead actor for Cillian Murphy and director for Chrisopher Nolan — his first win.

“What Was I Made For?,” music and lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, took home the sole trophy for “Barbie.”

“I’m so grateful for this song, and this movie and the way it made me feel. This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie and how incredible it is,” Eilish said from the stage.

‘Barbie’ singer Billie Eilish becomes youngest person to win two Oscars

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter made history by winning the original song Oscar for her ‘Barbie’ ballad ‘What Was I Made For?’

But it wasn’t the haul many might have expected for a critically acclaimed, history-making blockbuster.

“I hadn’t expected [‘Barbie’] to plummet as a contender so clearly and so quickly early on,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school. “Usually, it takes longer. There’s room for surprises.”

The film, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic blond plastic doll, saved the summer box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year with $636 million in North America and $1.4 billion globally to date. The impressive receipts also came with frenzied buzz, boosted by a dizzying amount of marketing tie-ins and Robbie’s impressive press-tour fashions inspired by actual looks worn by the famous doll over the years.

After months of living in a Barbie world, the academy rewarded the film with a more-than-respectable eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture. Two of its actors were nominated in supporting categories: Gosling, as Ken, and America Ferrera as Gloria , a frustrated working mom whose very human complications set off a crisis in Barbieland. Songs “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” made the original song category. It also was nominated for its costume and production design, and for its screenplay, by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The 2024 Oscar winners list

Oscar winners “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” Emma Stone and more took home Academy Awards during Sunday’s ceremony.

But the conversation on nominations morning in January was dominated instead by what “Barbie” wasn’t nominated for. Gerwig was left off the directing list, and Robbie, the titular star, who also executive produced the film, wasn’t nominated for lead actress. Numerous observers pointed out that these snubs reflected the same problems the film identified in the broader culture.

“The popular vote is never a guarantee of the establishment vote,” Galloway said. “In fact, the establishment has always been wary for them. If you look back at films that have emerged as classics, the most important of all time — Spielberg’s early films: ‘Jaws,’ ‘Close Encounters,’ ‘E.T,’ has he ever made better films? Not from my point of view, but they were not the ones that got awards. ‘Star Wars,’ which has probably influenced more of my students than any other film in history, no one even considered a serious contender for best picture. There’s always been a bit of a clash. And let’s face it, the establishment never recognized the avant-garde.”

Of course, “Oppenheimer,” a rare mix of box office clout and prestige, made for formidable competition. The film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide and had all the makings of an Oscar darling: It was helmed by a long-admired director, tackled cerebral material in a serious manner and boasted a star-studded cast that included Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Blunt.

All the best and worst moments of the 2024 Oscars, as they happened

“Oppenheimer” won several top awards, including best picture, director and lead actor, while lead actress went to Emma Stone for “Poor Things.” Billie Eilish won best song after Ryan Gosling performed “I’m Just Ken.”

It also came into the night on Sunday with plenty of hardware, including wins from the predictive trifecta of the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America, as well as the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. “Barbie,” by contrast, was largely shut out at those major awards.

“Barbie’s” performance at the Oscars — or underperformance, as some might argue — highlights the motion picture academy’s ongoing struggle to balance the voting preferences of its members with the tastes of the filmgoing (and awards-show-watching) public.

Just as film studios have largely shifted toward tentpole and franchise fare in their output, the Oscar nominations have increasingly highlighted indie and international films. The pandemic underscored this evolution, with little-seen best picture winners “CODA” and “Nomadland” primarily distributed via streaming services. In turn, many have theorized that a lack of nominees and winners like box office behemoth “Titanic,” which took home best picture and 10 other Academy Awards during the highest-rated telecast ever in 1998, have contributed to the Oscars’ declining viewership.

In 2018, the organization even considered establishing a “popular film” category to bring blockbuster-type movies into the broadcast but quickly shelved the idea. The Golden Globes introduced such a category this year.

Its first winner? “Barbie.”

Even Off Camera, Zendaya Dresses the Part

The actress is known for thematic dressing to promote her movies. After her “Dune” desert epic, comes a tennis love triangle, “Challengers.”

Iga Swiatek and Zendaya, both dressed in tennis whites, pose with Ms. Swiatek’s silver winner’s trophy.

By Jessica Testa

In “Challengers,” Zendaya plays a tennis star named Tashi Duncan. Her clothes are central to her identity; the character is sponsored by Adidas and costumed in sporty-and-rich outfits by the designer Jonathan Anderson .

“She’ll have a fashion line,” one of Tashi’s suitors predicts to another in the trailer . “She is going to turn her whole family into millionaires.”

Fashion is equally important to the real-life Zendaya — a tool of both image-making and moneymaking. She has become a defining star of the modern movie press tour. Coverage of these appearances can be feverish, with thousands of articles and social-media posts produced for each stop: a premiere in New York, a photo call in Mexico City, a news conference in Seoul.

The fever rises when actors lean into thematic dressing. The cast of “Barbie” drowned themselves in pink, ripping looks straight from vintage toy boxes. The stars of “Madame Web” wrapped themselves in blingy netted gowns. Kristen Stewart wore very little to promote her erotic thriller “Love Lies Bleeding.”

Still, few can generate quite as much attention as Zendaya, who, for example, wore a vintage robot suit by Mugler to the London premiere of “Dune: Part Two” in February. (Her apparent theme for this press tour: futuristic desert warrior queen.) From this single moment, the data analytics company Launchmetrics valued the media impact for Mugler to be worth $13.3 million, according to Women’s Wear Daily .

Yet despite her commitment to cosplay, Zendaya has not been wearing Adidas in the lead-up to “Challengers,” the Luca Guadagnino film that will have its premiere in late March. She is wearing preppy looks made by her real sponsor, Louis Vuitton, a luxury brand increasingly enmeshed in the sports world .

For a promotional image released on March 12, Zendaya wore a buttery sweater with a deep V neckline, relaxed white shorts and white pumps — like the most formidable stepmom at the country club, down to her long blown-out bob. Her stylist, the image architect Law Roach, credited Louis Vuitton and Bulgari for the outfit.

Then, on March 17, Zendaya attended the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., to watch the women’s final. Louis Vuitton dressed her again in tennis whites: a pullover, a tank top and a pleated skort. She accessorized with white sneakers, a small monogram purse — its attached neon yellow coin purse looked like a tennis ball — and her boyfriend, the actor Tom Holland. They sang along to Whitney Houston in their seats.

Zendaya, who trained for “Challengers” with the famed coach Brad Gilbert , later posed for photos with Iga Swiatek, winner of the match and the sport’s top-ranked women’s player.

She looked more at ease in her Sunday “ tenniscore ,” breaking from the severity of her “Dune” chapter. It wasn’t just her cyborg looks that made her seem otherworldly. (That Mugler fembot costume was followed by a vintage circuit-board Givenchy skirt set.) Crisp white gowns from Alaïa (in Paris) and Stéphane Rolland (in New York) also gave her the gravitas of a sci-fi empress at a state dinner.

Now she’s coming back down to earth. Or at least the tennis court. As Ms. Swiatek observed after her victory: “Meeting Zendaya was crazy, but on the other hand, she’s a human like all of us.”
