Visitors who plan to vacation during the summer months should plan for rain, especially in the afternoons. But, don’t let a stormy forecast ruin your trip. So, make sure you include an umbrella, raincoat, and hat on your list.

If you’re wanting to beat the heat, you can also include items like cooling towels and wearable fans on your packing list. These really help to keep you cool, especially if you are planning to spend time at one of the many theme parks.

From beaches and theme parks to luxury resorts, the Sunshine State appeals to travelers of every generation. Even Florida residents like to break from routine and play tourist every now and then. “My family loves a staycation,” says Christina Nicholson, a Floridian family and lifestyle blogger at Christina All Day . Nicholson resides in Wellington with her husband and three kids. “Living in South Florida, we are so lucky to have so many places to choose from.” For advice on the best family resorts in Florida, we also got insight from Terry Ward , whose blog Florida Beyond highlights her favorite spots around the state, and Orlando-based Travel + Leisure A-list travel advisor Jonathan Alder , CEO of Jonathan’s Travels , who has planned more than 30,000 trips. Here's the inside scoop on the best family resorts in Florida, with help from these local specialists.

The Breakers, Palm Beach

As Ward puts it, “There’s no more worthy splurge for a truly luxe family beach vacation than a stay at The Breakers in Palm Beach” — and this Palm Beach-based writer couldn’t agree more. “Even if just for a night or two, The Breakers is unbeatable for Old World elegance, one of the state’s best spas, and The Italian Restaurant , where kids have an adjoining play area,” Ward says. “It’s one of my family’s very favorite spots in Florida.” Be sure to grab a bike and head out for an easy, breezy pedal along the scenic Lake Trail.

Hotels don’t get much more family-friendly than Signia by Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek and Waldorf Astoria Orlando , both official Disney World hotels. The two properties make up a shared resort with a kids club, a three-acre lazy river, waterslides, a zero-entry pool, cabanas, and daily poolside games and activities, including arts and crafts, DJ dance parties, and hula-hoop contests. Kids can even learn to scuba dive in the pool, grab a raft for a dive-in movie, or learn to toss pizza dough at the Italian country kitchen, La Luce.

Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo, River Ranch

You don’t have to go out West for a ranch-style experience. Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo is an authentic Florida dude ranch and luxury glamping resort that spans 1,700 acres. Only an hour south of Orlando, the ranch is packed with adventures, from skimming the surface of the scenic Kissimmee River in an airboat to horseback riding, archery, and even an award-winning Saturday night rodeo. Best of all, accommodations include everything from typical lodge rooms and cottages to covered Conestoga wagons and luxe teepees.

PGA National Resort, Palm Beach Gardens

Nicholson thoroughly enjoyed a recent stay at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, which is best known for golf but great for families, too. “Going into the weekend, I thought my kids would say the pool was their favorite part, but it was actually the arcade,” Nicholson shares. “I’m not going to lie, I’m with them — it really was a lot of fun.”

Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Key Largo

Courtesy of Playa Largo Resort

An hour south of Miami , Playa Largo Resort & Spa in Key Largo spans nearly 15 acres of pure Florida bliss. With 178 luxury rooms and suites and even a three-bedroom beach house, it’s the ideal destination for a family vacation to the Florida Keys. When the kids tire of the expansive waterfront pool and 745 feet of sandy beach ( a rarity in the Keys ), they can retreat to a private bungalow equipped with board games and a TV. There’s also two tennis courts, a basketball court, watersports, and a daily discovery camp. Best of all? As bedtime nears, young guests can hit a button on their in-room telephone to choose one of five narrated stories to listen to as they doze. The critters featured in the stories are even part of an eco-themed scavenger hunt at the kids club.

The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island

Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton

While southern and central Florida tend to get most of the attention for family vacations in the state, northern Florida has a beauty all its own, as exemplified at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island . “We love leaving our home on Florida’s Gulf Coast for a stay on the Atlantic Ocean, just south of the Florida-Georgia border, at this gorgeous property,” Ward shares. “Amelia Island is a barrier island with miles of empty beachfront and bike trails to explore, plus a great little walkable downtown in Fernandina. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island even offers ecology field trips that take you out into the marshes and historic sites at Fort Clinch State Park to dive deeper into Florida’s Lowcountry.”

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa, Aventura

If an on-site waterpark is a feature you'd like in a hotel, here's another option. “The JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort was a blast when we stayed,” Nicholson says. “Access to the Tidal Cove Waterpark made the weekend my kids’ favorite getaway. My son, afraid of his own shadow, conquered a fear of his — we couldn’t keep him off one of the waterslides all weekend.” Parents can try their balance on the FlowRider surf simulator or take a few laps around the lazy river to unwind.

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples

Courtesy of Ritz Carlton, Naples

The Ritz-Carlton, Naples recently underwent a dramatic transformation, including the addition of the Vanderbilt Tower, a new lobby, three new dining experiences, new pools (as well as new hard-top bungalows and cabanas), and more spacious guestrooms and suites to accommodate larger families and extended stays. “After undergoing a massive renovation, this beachfront resort in Naples is another ideal family paradise, with waterslides and pool amenities for all ages,” Alder shares. “It’s right off downtown Naples, with its wonderful shopping and dining.” Families were top of mind in the refresh — the massive new Club Lounge even has a dedicated play space for kids, plus plenty of snacks and drinks.

The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club, Autograph Collection, St. Petersburg

Jeff Herron/The Vinoy Resort & Golf Club

After a recent refresh , the iconic Vinoy Resort is better than ever. “My little girl gets giddy about any hotel painted pink, so we’re all smiles from the get-go when we check into the Vinoy in downtown St. Pete, which happens to be one of my favorite urban cores to explore in Florida, too,” Ward shares. “You’re not on the beach here, but I never miss it. The property is in downtown St. Pete, about 15 minutes by car from the beaches, and there’s a great family pool with cabanas, views of the city skyline, dive-in movies during the summer, and even Kids Night Out events several times a month, in case you want to enjoy a chill adult meal one night. We love strolling right out from the hotel to enjoy downtown attractions, including the new St. Pete Pier and the awesome Saturday Morning Market .” The Vinoy goes all out for holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Easter, so opting to skip the cooking and spend your holidays here isn’t such a bad idea.

The Don CeSar, St. Pete Beach

Alder loves The Don CeSar , another pretty-in-pink St. Petersburg hotel. “This St. Pete icon has amazing pools and the most perfect white-sand beach with crystal-clear water that’s nice and shallow at the beginning, with very few waves, making it ideal for families with children,” he says. “Of course, there are amazing restaurants, a full spa, and all of the Gulf Coast barrier island perks in the area.”

Hawks Cay Resort, Duck Key

Located near Marathon on Duck Key, Hawks Cay Resort is a place Ward has returned to several times with her family. “We love staying right on the water in the two-story villas,” she shares. “The resort has traditional hotel rooms, too, and there’s a lovely sheltered lagoon with a sandy beach for swimming. You can do a ton of activities without even leaving the property, including dolphin swims, hitting the pirate ship pool and splash area, and playing a game of pickleball or tennis. It feels like summer camp for the whole family.”

For boutique luxury feels on a tranquil stretch of the Treasure Coast, head to Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa . “We settle in and make the two-bedroom suites with full kitchens and huge balconies our own,” Ward says. “At this lovely oceanfront resort in Vero Beach — another Florida beach town with an adorable and pedestrian-friendly downtown full of restaurants and boutiques (don’t miss the weekend market for more fun strolling with the kids) — you might even see sea turtles or their hatchlings doing their thing on the beaches.”

Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa, Riviera Beach

For close proximity to the best of South Florida and a laid-back, beach-town vibe, the family-friendly Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort & Spa is a solid choice. “We loved our stay,” Nicholson shares. “The green waterslide was a big hit with my kids. I loved the live music at the pool, my husband couldn’t get enough of the beach, and my kids loved finding seashells in the sand.” The hotel has two outdoor pools, fire pits, and meals can be delivered right to your poolside lounge chair or cabana. Plus, the hotel’s residence suites fell just like home with a fully stocked kitchen and private balconies with beautiful views.

Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, Kissimmee

The coral cays of the Florida Keys aren’t known for their beaches — they are more of a boating destination — but a lounge-worthy beach is exactly what you’ll find at the laid-back Postcard Inn Beach Resort . (There’s an on-site marina, too, if you want to keep boating on the agenda.) “My kids loved watching giant tarpon and nurse sharks, and we even saw a manatee make an appearance at the marina,” Ward says. “Other perks at this spot include live music at the tiki bar, a family pool with a swim-up bar serving virgin smoothies (and non-virgin piña coladas), and an on-site dive shop to take you out to the surrounding reefs.”

JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, Marco Island

Located on a barrier island south of Naples, Marco Island is a treasured getaway for many families thanks to its classic Florida vacation vibes. At the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort , guests enjoy three miles of pristine private beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. “Sands that feel like spun sugar, and shallow waters that are often as calm as a lake, are among the things my family loves about a stay at this huge property in Marco Island,” Ward shares. “There are four pools (including the family-friendly tiki pool, with a slide), a beachfront tiki bar, and even an adults-only wing of the property, in case you’re traveling with a multi-generational group with members who prefer a little downtime from all the action.”

Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fort Lauderdale

Courtesy of Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach

There’s no word for the opposite of a babymoon — a vacation with a new baby in tow — but there should be. And for such a trip, you can’t ask for better amenities than those offered at Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach . At this all-suite beachfront resort, new parents enjoy an infant program with upscale conveniences like a baby camera and monitor, Nuna Sena Aire travel crib, changing table, and sound machine. At bath time, guests can request baby bath products, a tub, and a kneeler. When it’s time to hit the pool, there’s swim diapers, mineral sunscreen, and foam play mats available. And don’t fret when baby’s hungry — the hotel has a nursing pillow, bottle warmer, Inglesina highchair, baby food, and even a list of local lactation consultants at the ready.

Baker’s Cay Resort, Key Largo

Who's in for foam parties, scavenger hunts, pool games, dodgeball, s’mores bonfires, and movie and trivia nights? Kids can expect all that and more at Baker’s Cay Resort , a 15-acre waterfront property in Key Largo, plus the many activities available in and around the waters of Florida Bay. It’s a getaway the whole family will want to repeat.

The Ritz-Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes, Orlando

Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

Staying at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes , which fronts a lake not far from the theme parks in Orlando, also grants you access to the adjoining JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes , which has a lazy river ideal for post-park tubing. “I love to start my morning with a coffee on the room’s balcony while the kids are sleeping in,” Ward says. “Plan a dinner at the resort’s fine-dining restaurant, Knife & Spoon, which recently got a Michelin star.” And if the hotel’s proximity to theme parks doesn't provide enough entertainment opportunities, there’s also cool activities like falconry and bass fishing on the lake.

Beach Place Guesthouses, Cocoa Beach

Looking for a place with a few less frills? Consider the family-friendly, resort-style Beach Place Guesthouses on Cocoa Beach, which offers suites with full kitchens. “I adore this oceanfront hideaway in the southern reaches of Cocoa Beach, where the dune-backed beaches are the most beautiful,” Ward says. “There’s a talking pet parrot near the reception desk, a fire pit for evening hangs, hammocks, loaner board games, and a deck where guests gather to barbecue — if you’re looking for the real Florida, it’s here. You might even catch a rocket launching from Port Canaveral or sea turtles hatching while strolling the beach.”

Acqualina Resort & Residences On The Beach, Sunny Isles Beach

Courtesy of Acqualina Resort & Residences

Acqualina is just close enough to Miami to add a bit of sizzle to your next family vacation, but also far enough away that a stay here feels like a true getaway. “Not only is this a beautiful five-star resort with a perfect beachfront location,” Alder says, “but it has large, nearly apartment-like rooms with full kitchens, making this ideal for families who want to make it a beachfront home away from home.” The resort has multiple pools, a variety of restaurants, and an extensive list of kids’ activities that change daily.

Best Florida Vacations For Families – Florida Panhandle

One of the best beach vacations for families is Destin, Florida

One of the best vacations for families is Destin, Florida.  This beautiful town has everything you need for a perfect beach getaway.

With its white-sand beaches, emerald green waters, and plenty of activities, your family will never be bored in Destin.

Destin has some of the best family beaches in all of Florida and these include Henderson Beach State Park, Norriego Point, and James Lee Park.

The Okaloosa Island Pier and Boardwalk is also just a few miles from Destin.

The kids will surely love Big Kahuna’s Water Park and Fat Daddy’s Arcade.

Right next door to the arcade is Gator Beach (located at Fudpucker’s Restaurant), where you can see live alligators and get up close to them!

Crab Island is a famous sandbar and one of the most popular family activities to do in Destin.

Most people come to Crab Island on a boat, but you can also get here by jet-ski, kayak, and paddleboard.

HarborWalk Village is another fun place to visit in Destin with laser tag, mini-golf, axe throwing, and other activities for the family.

Of course, there are lots of shopping and waterfront restaurants to try.

The best time to visit Destin is in April or May, in order to avoid the summer heat and larger crowds.

Panama City Beach is especially perfect for families looking for a fun and relaxing beach getaway

 2. Panama City Beach

One of the most laidback places to visit along the Panhandle is Panama City Beach. It is especially perfect for families looking for a fun and relaxing beach getaway in Florida.

There are plenty of things to do in Panama City Beach , including spending your days on the white sand beaches (made from crystal quartz), taking a dip in the emerald green sea, or doing a sailing trip to the nearby famous Shell Island (just make sure you visit on a weekday when it’s super quiet!).

If you’re looking for rainy day activities for the family then Panama City Beach has you covered.  It is home to Pier Park, a beachside shopping, dining, and entertainment complex that is designed to keep the entire family happy!

Pier Park has 124 shops, plenty of restaurants and bars, a SkyWheel (that gives you a panoramic view of the city), and plenty of entertainment options like an IMAX theater, mirror maze, escape room, arcade, and laser tag.

Other must-visits for the family include:

📌 Dog Beach , located opposite Pier Park. It is the only beach in Panama City Beach that allows pups and is a really fun place for dog-loving families.

📌 Thomas Donut & Snack Shop , this beachside restaurant has been open for more than 50 years and serves family favorites such as hotdogs, sandwiches, ice cream, and of course a wide array of exceptional donuts.

📌 PCB can be visited all year round but April/May is a great time as it gets much hotter in the summer, which may be uncomfortable for kids.

📌 Panama City Beach can be reached by plane from Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) which is only 20 minutes drive from the beachfront.

Seaside has become a popular destination for families who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of bigger vacation spots such as Orlando and Miami.

One of the best Florida destinations for families is Seaside, Florida.  Tucked away in the Panhandle of the Sunshine State, Seaside is a unique beach town that is known for its quaint, old-fashioned feel.

The town has been carefully planned to preserve its small-town atmosphere, and as a result, it has become a popular destination for families who are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of bigger vacation spots such as Orlando and Miami.

One of the main highlights of Seaside is Seagrove Beach. This beautiful, sandy beach is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the Florida sun with your family.

The water is a beautiful shade of blue, and the waves are perfect for swimming or boogie boarding. Other nearby beaches include Miramar Beach and Grayton Beach State Park.

In addition to its lovely beaches, there are other great things to do in Seaside. You can rent bicycles and explore the town, go on a nature walk, or hang out at Ruskin Place.

You can also have a unique dining experience at Airstream Row where you can sample a variety of food in vintage airstreams that function as food trucks.

Seaside Amphitheater is also a great place to catch a live show or festival. Seaside is also brimming with fun indoor activities for rainy days.

The town has several unique shops, art galleries, and museums. The two most notable attractions are the Seaside Post Office and the Chapel at Seaside.

The best time to visit Seaside is between April and May since the snowbirds and spring breakers have subsided.

The weather is also great with minimal rain and warm days. However, Seaside is a great place to visit any time of year.

Best Florida Vacations For Families – Southwest Florida

Indian Rocks Beach is a perfect choice for a family-friendly beach in Florida

Indian Rocks Beach is more peaceful and quiet than its northern neighbor (Clearwater Beach) and a better value than its southern neighbors St Pete Beach and Anna Maria Island.

The best things to do in Indian Rocks Beach are hanging out on the amazing beaches (especially for sunsets) and savoring fresh Gulf coast seafood at its restaurants.

The calmer water on Florida’s Gulf Coast makes Indian Rocks Beach a favorite destination for families from all over the US and even the world.

Beach entrances on nearly every street—and each with free parking spots, showers, and benches—make IRB the most wallet-friendly and convenient Florida Gulf Coast beach destination for families.

More active children of all ages will love Kolb Park (skateboard area along with basketball, pickleball, baseball fields, and a playground).

Nature lovers can head to the excellent boardwalk trail over the mangroves at Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve.

Indian Rocks Beach is a skinny island where people can fish, boat, swim, and play in the Gulf and even calmer Intracoastal waters.

Vacation rentals—including houses, condos, apartments, beach cottages, and cabins—are the norm in Indian Rocks Beach and are ideal for families, two or more couples, multi-gen gatherings, or even couples.

IRB is a superb place to be any time of the year but February through May is most popular and Spring Break time is most desired.

Post your spectacular US Gulf Coast sunset photos a minute or two earlier than everyone else because Indian Rocks Beach is the westernmost spot of land along the Florida Gulf Coast.

When it comes to family friendly destinations in Florida, it’s hard to beat Marco Island in southwest Florida.

This coast of Florida is often referred to as the Paradise Coast, and it’s not far from the truth.

With its gorgeous soft white sand beaches and the perfect combination of shopping, dining, and unique things to do, Marco Island is perfect for kids of all ages.

Ideally located at the southern end of southwest Florida, Marco Island is the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands and offers a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the Everglades as well.

The island is surrounded by water, ideal for boaters and watersports.

One of the best beaches on Marco for families is Tigertail Beach, a most unusual beach that offers two unique swimming areas and lots of places for kids to safely explore.

There are actually two different beaches at Tigertail; the inner lagoon beach and the outer beach on the white sand of the Gulf of Mexico.

As its name implies, you can walk to Tigertail Beach, but it’s more fun to wade through the water of the lagoon to reach the outer white sand beach.

To explore around the island, there are plenty of well-marked kayaking trails at Rookery Bay, and several unique boat tours that will take you through the Bay and out to Keewaydin Island.

Shelling is also a favorite family pastime and the beaches are known for delivering up beautiful souvenirs by the handful!

Most families love to visit in the spring and winter when the temperatures aren’t so hot but don’t overlook some amazing hotel deals during the shoulder seasons of May into June and September into October.

Lori- Naples Florida Travel Guide

Anna Maria Island is one of the best destinations in Florida to have a family vacation since there is so much to explore and experience here.

It is one of the best beach destinations in Florida to have a family vacation since there is so much to explore and experience here.

The island is only about 7 miles long and is lined with beautiful beaches all the way along the coast. However, there are a few that steal the spotlight including Manatee Beach, Coquina Beach, and Bayfront Park Beach.

Manatee and Coquina Beach are both great for families, there is always a lifeguard stationed at these beaches, and you’ll find plenty of amenities nearby including cafes and restrooms.

While Bayfront Park Beach is beautiful, you won’t find many amenities here which can be difficult if you’re on a family vacation with little ones.

There are also plenty of things to do on Anna Maria Island as a family including the aquarium, the city pier, and Coquina Baywalk.

You can also explore the Historic Bridge Street, rent bicycles for the day, or even head out on a wildlife-watching boat trip.

Going on a boat trip is a favorite with the kids, but may not be suitable for really young children.

When it comes to beautiful beaches, you’ll be spoiled for choices if you decide to visit Anna Maria Island.

If you are planning to visit Anna Maria Island, you don’t really need a rental car. You can rent bikes, and a golf cart, or use the free trolley to get around the island from 6 am to 9 pm.

If you are traveling by car, keep in mind that the island has very limited parking.  The best time to visit is January – March or October because it’s cooler on Anna Maria Island around then.

These times of the year are also the quietest if you are looking for uncrowded beaches.

A perfect place for a family vacation in Florida is Siesta Key

A perfect place for a family vacation in Florida is   Siesta Key . Siesta Key has some of the prettiest beaches in the United States.  It is a great destination for relaxing at the beach, water sports, and small island vibes.

The beaches in Siesta Key are known for their beautiful white sand and blue water; the largest public beach access point is at the Siesta Key Pavilion.

Here you can find lots of great amenities like lifeguards, volleyball courts, and showers.  This is also the largest parking lot.

If you are looking for a quieter part of the beach, you can use Siesta Key Access 4 at 180 Beach Road.  You can park at the Siesta Village’s main strip or walk from the larger parking lot located at Access 7.

Some other fun nearby beaches are Turtle Beach, Crescent Beach, and Venice Beach.

Venice is a famous beach for collecting fossilized shark teeth.  It is known as the shark tooth capital of the world.

Siesta Key Village is a fun downtown area with great restaurants, boutiques, and souvenir shops.  This area is known for its quirky and unique boutiques.

Be sure to stop by the local ice cream shop for a tasty treat the kids will love.  Another great place to do some shopping in nearby Sarasota is St. Armands Circle.

If it is a rainy day and you aren’t sure what to do with your kids, consider driving over to Circus Sarasota.

Sarasota is considered the Circus Capital of the World. The performances in the circus highlight the culture in Florida.

Some other fun activities for a rainy day include Regal Hollywood – Sarasota, the Monte Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, and the Classic Car Museum of Sarasota.

one vacation spot has been beloved by families for generations — the island of Sanibel and Captiva.

Actually, this island is technically two conjoined islands that were slightly separated by a hurricane in 1921. Today the islands are joined by a small, two-lane bridge that you can walk across in less than a minute.

The unique barrier island of Sanibel and Captiva lies just off the coast of Ft. Myers in southwest Florida.

There’s only one road on and off the island, which makes for heavy traffic in the busiest months of the year.

The winter months of December through March are the most popular time to visit, though off-season visitors reap the rewards of far less traffic and a sleepy island the way it was 50 years ago.

Sanibel Island is known for its shelling — the gently sloping sand deposits loads of beautiful shells at your feet every minute of the day and has earned its title as the Shelling Capital of the World.

In fact, this one activity is the reason you’ll see locals and visitors alike doing the Sanibel Stoop , forever hunched over to find the next lovely gift from the sea.

Besides shelling, one of the best ways to experience the island’s natural world is at the J. N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Refuge, where you can kayak, hike, and explore the unique mangrove estuary.

There are several dining and shopping areas on the island but you won’t find fast food joints or chain restaurants.

This has been part of Sanibel’s appeal for decades, and people love it that way. It’s a simple place where families go for ice cream and kids still run wild along the beach.

With 51 miles of coastline, there are so many amazing places for families to explore around the area of Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs is on Florida’s Gulf Coast, near Clearwater and Tampa.  Known for being the “sponge capital of the world”, the area is steeped in history and Greek culture.

With 51 miles of coastline, there are so many amazing places for families to explore around the area on land and sea. Fred Howard Park is just ten minutes outside of downtown Tarpon Springs and only costs $5 to enter.

The park has 9 pavilions, clean restrooms, 2 playgrounds, and a ball field.  It’s a great plac e to have a family picnic before or after hitting the beach!

Drive, walk, or bike along the one-mile causeway to Fred Howard Beach, which has clear water and tons of shade trees. Here you can snorkel, swim, kayak, or play in the white powder sand!

Downtown Tarpon Springs was founded in the early 1900s by Greek sponge divers looking to harvest the natural sea sponges that are in abundance here.

Today, all aspects of the sponge industry are available to view at the docks, from the harvesting to the sale of natural sponges.  And the Greek culture still thrives to this day, so you can find authentic Greek restaurants, music, cathedrals, and shops downtown.

Stroll through the town to touch and learn about the neat sponges, grab some fresh ice cream or baklava, or take a boat tour out to Anclote Key Reserve State Park and look for unique shells!

A trip to Tarpon Springs is best in the off-season so it is not so crowded, from September through April.  The temperatures are not too hot and you will see the most amazing sunsets!

Best Florida Vacations For Families – Central Florida

Disney World is a great destination for the whole family with lots of activities for everyone to do

 10. Disney World

Walt Disney World in Orlando is a perfect family vacation since it offers something for every member of the family.   Disney World measures 101km² and has 5 theme parks, 33 resort hotels, 2 water parks, and several sports facilities.

Magic Kingdom is for the true magic Disney feeling. If you’ve got a foodie, a world traveler, or a game lover in your group then visit Epcot.  Lovers of movies and stunts head to Hollywood Studios.

Animal enthusiasts will find their joy at Animal Kingdom. The latest addition, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, ensures days of fun for Star Wars fans.

Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are perfect for fans of hours of water fun. There are golf courses and mini-golf tracks so staying busy shouldn’t be a problem.

The hotels offer swimming pools, restaurants, and fun activities.  Think outside movie nights and organized games in the pools.

Pop Century Resort for instance has an arcade, enough for hours of inside fun.  Several rides and attractions in the parks are indoors, so still perfect when it’s raining.

Orlando is the theme park capital of the world since it not only has Disney World, but also Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Legoland, and numerous smaller parks.

Disney World is fun all year long, however, in October there’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and in December there’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

Expect huge crowds, but also lots of extra things happening in the parks.  Summertime is hot and with rain showers.

Winter time can be a bit colder.  Spring and Fall are just warm or hot, but less rain than in the Summer.

Cosette- KarsTravels

One of the best things to do in Orlando, if you love amusement parks, is to set aside a couple of days and go to Universal Orlando

One of the best things to do in Orlando, if you love amusement parks, is to set aside a couple of days and go to Universal Orlando.

Universal Orlando comprises two gigantic amusement parks and one water park.  Universal Studios Florida opened in 1990 and is the original one.

Then, in 1999, Islands of Adventure opened.  They are located next door to each other with separate entrances.

However, you can easily walk between the two entrances or once you are in one of the parks, you can move between the two parks without having to exit through either of the main entrances.

Lastly, there is a water park called Volcano Bay which is located elsewhere in Orlando.

It goes without saying that these amusement parks are incredible.  There are heart-pounding roller coasters, fantastic virtual rides that capture your wildest imagination, and awesome shows.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter, each park hosts the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.  In Islands of Adventure, you will find Hogwarts Castle and you can spend your time exploring Hogsmeade Village.

At Universal Studios Florida, you enter and explore Diagon Alley. Both offer their own rides, stores, and experiences and are truly amazing.

Unfortunately, Universal Orlando can be expensive and very busy, especially if you go in the summer, on any school holiday, or on a statutory holiday.

However, there are some specific Universal Studios Orlando tips that can help you save time and money.

  • Come mid-week and when the kids are in school for less expensive tickets and smaller line-ups.
  • Stay at one of the designated Universal Studio hotels and get free front-of-the-line passes and admission into the park at least 30 minutes earlier than general admission.
  • Go into the single rider line.  This line is much shorter than the regular line. The downside is you will likely not sit with someone you know on the ride.  However, for the time that you save, it is worth it.
  • Go in the early morning, take a break and go back to your hotel in the middle of the day, then come back in the early evening.  There are fewer people in the park during these times.
  • Head to the shows in the middle of the day when the park is busy.

Located on Florida’s eastern shore, Vero Beach is a fantastic, family-friendly destination for those looking for a beach getaway away

12. Vero Beach

Located on Florida’s eastern shore, Vero Beach is a fantastic, family-friendly destination for those looking for a beach getaway away from all the hustle and bustle of many of Florida’s bigger resort towns.

There are strict limitations on beach development which means that Vero Beach has retained its relaxed, laid-back vibe, and beaches are usually mostly empty, even during high season.

Here you won’t be fighting the crowds for a great spot at the beach; you’ll have plenty of room to spread out and enjoy time with family.

Other than setting up on the beach, favorite activities include airboat rides in the marshlands where you can spot birds and crocodiles, always a favorite with kids.

You’ll also find McKee Botanical Gardens, with its brand new Children’s Garden complete with interactive exhibits to learn about nature and a fantastic playground shaped like a pirate ship.

You’ll also find a Disney resort just north of town on Orchid Island if you’re looking for a family-oriented place to stay.

Complete with a spectacular stretch of private beach, multiple swimming pools, and a fun waterpark for kids to enjoy, it has a lot to offer families with young kids.

Older kids might like staying closer to town – the historic Driftwood Resort often has live music, is home to one of the best casual restaurants in town, and faces its own idyllic stretch of beach.

Make sure to check out the restaurants just across the street, such as Cravings, a favorite ice cream spot, and the Lemon Tree for delicious brunches.

Miami is a popular holiday destination in Florida with a lot of attractions for families and children

Miami is a popular holiday destination in Florida with a lot of attractions for families and children.

South Beach is only a boat ride away from the city of Miami and it has a vibrant mix of cafes, restaurants, galleries, boutiques, and markets along the long beaches with white sands.

Head to Miami Beach or South Beach for all sorts of water sports like swimming and surfing; the best months to visit the beaches are between March and May when the sun shines with temperatures at 70 degrees.

SoBe has also   the world’s largest art deco building cluster , and a great way to explore all these buildings, museums, and weekend markets is to rent a bike and explore the town at your own pace.

In the city of Miami, the newly renovated Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is now located at the city’s Museum Park, together with the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

PAMM was founded in 1984 and it is the most prestigious modern art museum in the region.

The building itself is a sleek and modern architecture with spacious galleries, showcasing large-scale installation art created by American, Western European, African, and Latino artists in the 20th   and 21st   centuries.

It has a permanent collection of over 1,800 artworks, including renowned artists like Kehinde Wiley, James Rosenquist, Purvis Young, Joseph Cornell, Frank Stella, and Kiki Smith.

The Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science was opened in 2017; it is a leading science museum and a great educational opportunity for family visitors, with lots of hands-on exhibits about weather and technology, wildlife, and a planetarium.

The city of Titusville is one of the best Florida destinations for families.

14. Titusville

The city of Titusville is one of the best Florida destinations for families.

Located on what is known as the “Space Coast” of Florida, it offers a lot of family-friendly attractions.  It’s also a place that you can visit any time of the year.

One of the main   things to do in Titusville   is to visit Kennedy Space Center.  You can spend an entire day there, going around the buildings in the main complex but also driving out by bus to some of the restricted areas.

A lot of the things at Kennedy Space Center are interactive too, which is great for the kiddos.

Titusville also has some great family beaches on Canaveral National Seashore. It stretches for 24 miles and is all undeveloped, meaning no condos, shops, or restaurants.

It’s a great place to relax and play in the sand, but remember to bring snacks.

If the weather isn’t cooperating, Titusville also has some cool museums, like the American Police Hall of Fame & Museum, the American Space Museum & Space Walk of Fame, and the North Brevard Historical Museum.

For some tasty seafood and great views of the Intracoastal waterway, we recommend heading over to Pier 220. If your kiddos are picky eaters, Titusville also has all of the usual fast-food restaurants.

Vicky- Buddy The Traveling Monkey

One of the best Florida destinations for families is St. Augustine--the oldest city in the USA

Kids and adults will both love touring the Castillo de San Marcos, the largest masonry stone fortress in the United States. It’s stood for over 300 years on the coast of Florida and will surely become a favorite attraction of any castle lover in your family.

The Fountain of Youth is another top-rated family attraction that you’ll find nearby.

Located in the area first explored in 1513 by Juan Ponce de Leon, this 15-acre archaeological park encourages visitors to take a sip from the Spring of Eternal Hope.

When all that adventuring has left you hungry, head to one of the best St Augustine restaurants on the water and watch the sunset while dining on The Reef’s back patio.

If the weather is rainy, head indoors to see the world’s largest collection of over 800 authentic pirate artifacts at the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum. This is also the place where you can see the world’s only surviving pirate treasure chest!

St. Augustine makes a great vacation any time of the year, but spring and fall are the best times to visit to avoid the scorching heat of Florida summers.

There’s definitely something for everyone in this charming southern town, and you won’t be disappointed if you consider St. Augustine for your next family vacation in Florida.

Jillian Michelle- Adventure Dragon

Everglades National Park is the perfect Florida vacation destination for those who love the outdoors.

 16. The Everglades

Everglades National Park is the perfect Florida vacation destination for those who love the outdoors.  It’s a wonderful place to learn about Florida wildlife, go hiking or biking, take a boat ride and enjoy the night sky.

The best time to visit the Everglades is in the winter and spring, during the dry season.

December to April is best because there will be little rain and mild temperatures. If you visit during the summer wet season, you can expect daily thunderstorms and very high heat.

Some of the best things to do in the Everglades include biking or taking the tram to the Shark Valley Observation Tower, going on an airboat tour, and hiking the Anhinga Trail at the Royal Palm Visitor Center.

Rain or shine, the Robert is Here Fruit Stand is a wonderful place to visit.  There, you can try rare and exotic fruits, see a variety of farm animals, and eat lunch.

For a unique activity in the Everglades, go on a ranger-led wet walk. The ranger will provide a walking stick and lead you out through the water into a cypress dome.

It’s an incredible way to see a different side of the park and learn about the unique ecosystems that exist there. The walk is kid-friendly and doable for most abilities.

Many visitors camp inside the Everglades.  If camping isn’t for you, the nearest cities for hotels are Homestead on the west and Everglades City on the east.

If you stay in Homestead, you can also easily combine your Everglades trip with visits to Biscayne National Park or Miami.

10 awesome family adventures in florida, here are 10 totally awesome family adventures - with options for kids of different age ranges..

By Chelle Koster Walton

This year, when the teacher asks your kids what they did on vacation, they won't have to hang their heads, mumble and turn red. Instead, they can brag about their totally awesome adventures in Florida.

manatee snorkeling adventures in Florida

Snorkeling with manatees.

- ThreeSistersSpringsVisitors.org

1. Snorkel with Manatees

(ages 5 and up)

Go ahead, everybody say it: "I swam with prehistoric giants." Now try and see if they can say it without giggling when you all remember how gentle and balloon-ish the giants they call "manatees" actually looked. But considering that manatees can grow as long as 12 feet, weigh up to 3,500 pounds, and have been around even longer than Grandma and Grandpa, the prehistoric giant thing makes a story they can stick to.

Manatees graze their way up many Florida waterways, but they are partial to the warm waters of Crystal River and Homosassa in the months from November to March. Here, your family can snorkel with the nation's largest wintering herd on special tours made just for families. It's one of the best adventures in Florida.   Bird's Underwater emphasizes learning and will even shoot a video of your child and his or her prehistoric giant. Your kids will learn how to respect these gentle, endangered creatures and perhaps get some inspiration to eat their vegetables from these voracious herbivores. Here's how to snorkel with manatees in Crystal River.

2. Innertube the Ichetucknee

(any age if with parents)

Water parks and resort swimming pools try to emulate it, but there's nothing quite like the real thing, baby: Lazing down a refreshing river in the rubbery embrace of an inner tube, powered by nature. North Central Florida bubbles over with the kind of cool, scenic springs that provide the oomph behind a successful innertube ride. That is, one that requires no paddling. Ichetucknee Springs State Park does it best: Clean waters, controlled crowds and a passing view that feels like you're watching a loop of the best nature film footage ever shot.

Choose your float time (up to two hours), pick up your tubes at a vendor stand just outside the park, and hop on the tram to your destination up-river. (Some tubing restrictions apply; check with the park for details.) Pack a lunch for a family picnic afterwards in the piney surroundings of the park's deep forests.

surfing adventures in Florida

Check out a surf school in Cocoa Beach.

3. Learn to Ride the Atlantic Blue Crush

(ages 4 and up)

Start at the Cocoa Beach Pier . There's a sculpture of a surfboard with a wave curling overhead. Have the kids step on and snap their picture. If they like how that looks (and have been begging you to buy them a rash guard), it's time to sign them up for surfing lessons in Florida's capital of wave action.

They call it the Space Coast and the Treasure Coast, but the stretch from Cocoa Beach south to Fort Pierce rightly deserves the name "Surf Coast." Waves are dependable along this shoreline, even in summer. And they're just the right size for beginners, making it one of the great adventures in Florida for all ages.

There are several surf schools in the area that can teach your kids how to do this exhilarating sport right and safely.

4. Bike Shark Valley

Don't worry, there are no sharks in Shark Valley . Beware the jaws of a different creature, however. Population-wise, Everglades National Park is like the New York of alligators. A 15-mile paved cycling loop takes you past their habitat to an observation tower and back. But if everyone in the family isn't up to the pedaling power required for a lengthy trip (it takes two to three hours), just ride a piece and turn around. Then jump on the tram that will take you there.

Along the way it's practically guaranteed you'll see alligators big, little and Tyrannosaurish. Keep your distance and stay on your bike and they won't bother you. (Never offer them a bite to eat or that bite just may end up being you.) Bring your own bikes or rent them at the park, and don't forget the bug juice and sunscreen.

5. Ride the Edge of Your Seat

(ages 7 and up)

If it's one-upmanship they seek in the game of who dared the hairiest, scariest roller coaster on vacation, head to Universal Orlando Resort . Then strap in and hold tight. If you have the nerve to ride along, that is. Take the Incredible Hulk, for instance. It blasts you out of a pitch-black tunnel at speeds that go from 0 to 40 mph in two seconds, then drops you into thin air, only to be pelted with water two stories below. Or how about Dragon Challenge, the world's first inverted double, near-miss racing coaster? Located at Islands of Adventure , this coaster is part of the new "Wizarding World of Harry Potter."

But for the newest rides and an unforgettable adventure in Florida, try Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and star in your own music video.

6. Cruise with Pirates

(ages 4-12)

No school! No baths! No rules! Ah, the pirate's life for them! To let them try out the lifestyle before they turn in their land legs, set sail from Clearwater . A new pirate's hat, a little face paint, a couple of boisterous buccaneer tales, and they'll be doing water cannon battle that would make Captain Kidd proud. Cruises include treasure hunts, kids games, and all the soft drinks they can guzzle.

7. Scallop the Gulf

What has 100 blue eyes, can swim sideways, and tastes yummy? Answer: A Florida bay scallop. It's almost as fun catching them as eating them, besides, and this is one of the few places in the U.S. where you can do that. All that scallop-collecting requires is a snorkel, fins or water shoes, and a mesh bag for all those plump little crustaceans.

Florida's north central coast, known as The Big Bend, boasts the best scalloping around in the summer months. At Hagen's Cove near Keaton Beach, you can wade from shore into shallow waters to pluck the shellfish from grass flats. In Steinhatchee , catch a scalloping charter - best for first timers because captains and crew show you the "sweet spots" and how to properly clean the scallops. For a small fee, they'll even do the dirty work for you. Port St. Joe , just east of Panama City Beach in northwest Florida, is also known for its scalloping. Check in with local charters to get the details and dates for licenses and official scalloping season.

8. Lunch with an Astronaut

What would your child ask an astronaut if your family sat down to lunch with one? Better start them preparing their questions, because it can happen. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Florida's central east coast invites students to break bread with the likes of John Glenn, Jim Lovell, Story Musgrave, and Jon McBride - America's space heroes.

Dig into a buffet lunch with 30 to 100 other kids and parents and listen to one of America's top space travelers talk about his experiences and the importance of setting goals. Afterward, shake the astronaut's hand, get an autograph, and get your picture taken together. That oughta make your kids' friends green with envy.

The classic attraction Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, opened in 1946, offers animal shows and interactive programs.

9. Swim with Sea Critters

Spongebob Squarepants, move over! Now it's your family's turn to hang out in the sea, with some of Florida's most loveable underwater playmates. Theater of the Sea in Islamorada in the Florida Keys lets you into a 15-feet-deep salt-water lagoon with rays, sea lions, or dolphins for a hands-on encounter of a lifetime. Theater of the Sea provides the snorkel gear and sea life. The kids provide the desire to touch and interact with the gentle creatures. With the dolphins and sea lions, they learn trainers' secrets to requesting behaviors such as jumps, hugs, fin tows, and foot pushes. Orientation and swim time lasts about 2.5 hours.

10. Paddle the Blackwater

What's so special about Pensacola's Blackwater River? Black water, white sand bottom. The black comes from tannin in the cypress trees; the water is really as clean as can be. The white comes from quartz rock that washes all the way down from the Appalachian Mountains and arrives as sand after all that tumbling.

Start your family's paddling adventure in Milton, self-proclaimed "Canoe Capital of Florida." Adventures Unlimited Outdoor Center and Blackwater River State Park have the equipment, plus camping and cabins. Other outfitters operate from Pensacola and environs. Plan to paddle around for a couple of hours or a couple of days. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on a secluded sand beach. Take lots of pictures because no one's going to believe your kids didn't make up this magical river.

Places to Remember

St. Andrews State Park near Panama City Beach features sugar white sands, emerald green waters, and a vast array of ever-changing winged creatures since the park is a popular migratory stopover for numerous bird and butterfly species. Besides boasting a mile-and-a-half of beaches for fishing and swimming, St. Andrews also offers the chance for visitors to stroll through pines, dunes and coastal plant communities, or set up camp in a shady campground or primitive group area.

10 Fun Florida Road Trips for Families

Terri Marshall

Florida’s a classic family road trip destination. Start your journey in Miami, Tampa or Orlando. They all make great starting points. Then, pick your route. Maybe your kids are all about the beaches. Head to Daytona on the east or Clearwater on the west coast. Prefer to discover the “real” Florida? Take an airboat ride through the Everglades to see the wildlife. Here are 10 of SheBuysTravel’s kid-approved Florida road trips to kick off your vacation planning.

From the sugary white sands of the Panhandle beaches to the reptile-filled swamps of the Everglades to the quirky culture of Key West—no matter which direction you choose, Florida road trips deliver plenty of family fun and the chance to explore the state’s hidden gems . Choose one of these 10 routes — or combine a few depending on how much time you have — and get ready to make some unforgettable family vacation memories.

Most of my life, road trips have occupied a spot on my family’s summer calendar. The adventures continued with my own kids when they were young. Now, when our schedules align, the grandkids and I uphold this long-standing family tradition. With such a diverse landscape and innumerable family attractions, the Sunshine State makes an ideal place to take to the road with your favorite people.

1. Pensacola to Apalachicola Florida Road Trip

Florida’s Panhandle makes for a scenic road trip. In Pensacola, start at the National Naval Aviation Museum where my grandson-approved flight simulators and virtual reality experiences add to the exhibits to educate and entertain. Driving east, you’ll pass plenty of Florida beach towns — Panama City Beach and Destin are among our favorites — where you’ll no doubt want to spend a little time in the sun and sand. If your kids are like my grandkids, prepare to be buried in the sand.

For off-the-beach entertainment in Destin, head to The Track . This family recreation center with go-karts, bumper cars and boats, miniature golf, bungee jumping and an arcade will entertain the kids for hours. For dinner, we loved the Back Porch where a long porch and chairs in the sand literally means seafood on the beach. For us, it was a win-win as we lingered over dinner and cocktails and the kids played in the sand.

Things to Do Along the Way

Moving further east, Florida’s “forgotten coast” boasts charming small towns like Apalachicola and Carrabelle, stellar fishing and oysters aplenty. Be sure to visit St. George’s Island for a climb to the top of the storied lighthouse. In Carrabelle, you’ll find the world’s smallest police station housed in a phone booth.

The Apalachicola River Paddling Trail Systems offers nearly 100 miles of prime trails for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. In the nearly 900 square miles of the Apalachicola National Forest, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and hiking keep the kids moving. If you’re up for camping, Wright Lake includes 18 campsites with picnic tables, grills, tent pads and fire rings.

2. Lake City to the Black Bear Scenic Byway and Beyond

As a Floridian, for years I traveled up and down I-75 without detouring off the highway in Lake City. Don’t do what I did.

Instead, stop to check out this charming town for great eats and intriguing nature. Start the day with breakfast at Shirley’s—a decades-old diner serving up biscuits and gravy, cheese grits and all the diet-busting cuisine a road trip deserves. Then, work off some of those calories at Falling Creek Falls, where a short .6 boardwalk hiking trail leads to a spectacular root beer-colored waterfall.

Next, head south to FL-40E to travel along the Black Bear Scenic Byway into the Ocala National Forest. Keep the kids on the lookout for black bears, which can sometimes be seen roadside. Break up the ride with a dip in one of the cool clear springs. With more than 600 springs, rivers and lakes there’s plenty to choose from, but Juniper Springs with its working water wheel is a favorite with our group. While you’re there, stroll along the boardwalk that leads around the back of the spring into more serene nature and a bridge that overlooks Fern Hammock Springs where sand boils bubble up.

Pancakes and Manatees Along the Way

Exiting the forest, continue your spring exploration at DeLeon Springs. We like to arrive in the morning to make our own pancakes at the Old Spanish Mill Grill & Griddle House. Pitchers of batter and a griddle await at each table along with toppings like pecans, chocolate chips and blueberries. It’s messy and delicious!

Continue 15 miles south to Blue Spring State Park . A designated manatee refuge, Blue Spring State Park harbors an estimated 250 to 300 manatees from November through March. Stroll along the boardwalk and watch manatees feed and care for their calves. In warmer months, swimming, canoeing, kayaking and snorkeling take the stage.

3. Central Florida Backroads

Although widely known for its many theme parks centered in the Orlando area , Central Florida’s backroads make for some of the state’s best road trips. Off U.S. Hwy 192 in Kenansville, Wild Florida Airboats & Gator Park is a thriller. My three grandkids especially loved feeding alligators, speeding through the headwaters of the Everglades and a slow, slow, slow sloth encounter.

For a fun overnight option—and a big winner with my grandson, Benjamin, Westgate River Ranch offers glamping along with a plethora of activities. Try archery, rock-climbing and airboats, or choose a more laid-back experience at the petting zoo.

As you travel east on U.S. Hwy 60 to Lake Wales, add Bok Tower Gardens to your list. Although the main attraction at the center of the botanically blessed 250-acre garden remains the 205-foot-tall “singing” tower with its carillon bells, my grandkids adored the Hammock Hollow Children’s Garden. Among the highlights were the riverwalk with fountains, hammocks for giggles and a stage where they displayed their acting skills—a career path we’re not encouraging.

One of the world’s most colorful theme parks, LEGOLAND always draws cheers from my crowd. On hot summer days, the LEGOLAND Water Park makes a big splash with body slides, tube slides, a lazy river and pools. Skip the towels when it’s time to dry off and jump in one of the air dryers to add to the fun.

Lakeland’s Safari Wilderness Ranch surprised us all with its large herds of exotic game roaming free across 260 acres of wilderness. We rode in customized safari vehicles to see ostriches, giraffes, zebras, water buffalo and more to the delight of everyone.

4. A Barrier Islands and Florida History Road Trip

Travel Florida A1A down the coast from Fernandina Beach to Cocoa Beach for a beachside road trip like no other. From picturesque beachside communities to isolated barrier islands to the Kennedy Space Center and a colorful surf shop, these 210 miles deliver a Florida east coast sampler platter.

Once a pirate’s haven, the Victorian seafood village of Fernandina Beach provides a remarkable blend of chic and beach. Explore a few downtown shops even the kids will love like Villa Villekulla—a Pippi Longstocking-inspired toy store. Stop for lunch at Timoti’s Seafood Shak complete with an enclosed pirate playground. Nearby, Amelia Island State Park offers horseback riding on the beach. Casting a line in the surf or from the mile-long George Crady Fishing Pier keeps the family fisherpeople happy.

Stops Along the Way

Undeveloped and rich in natural beauty, Little Talbot Island boasts more than five miles of pristine beaches. Combing the beach for shark’s teeth always keeps my grandkids entertained. Between Big and Little Talbot Islands, the salt marsh waters make ideal kayaking territory. Hikes through the dunes and driftwood add adventure.

Scooting on down the road, Florida’s earliest history unfolds in Flagler County at St. Augustine. Explore the Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States—you can never go wrong with cannons (or so my grandsons say.) Save a rainy day with a visit to the Pirate & Treasure Museum. You’ll also find lots of free things to do in St. Augustine.

5. A Sand, Surf and Space Road Trip

While spring breakers flock to Daytona Beach and its infamous boardwalk, our go-to spot is New Smyrna Beach. With no cars on the beach, the kids can build sandcastles, play on their boogie boards and try surfing.

Worth exploring, the 73-acre Smyrna Dunes Park has a two-mile elevated boardwalk that winds through sand dunes. The platform provides primo viewing of marine life, reptiles and unique vegetation. The park also has picnic areas, pavilions and an observation tower.

Florida’s Space Coast

Continuing south, space takes the stage in Cape Canaveral at the Kennedy Space Center. A day surrounded by rockets inspired my youngest grandson. That means I landed in the gift shop buying an astronaut suit.

Located along Florida’s Space Coast an hour’s drive from Orlando, Cocoa Beach’s soft cocoa-colored sand distinguishes it from other beaches. Designated the east coast surfing capital, you’ll find veteran surfers alongside beginners riding the waves. No visit for our family happens without a stop at the massive two-story Ron Jon’s Surf Shop stocked with anything you could possibly need for a beach day including rentals. On the Cocoa Beach Causeway, the kitschy Dinosaur Store’s selection of dinosaur teeth, shrunken heads and arcade games are sure to delight.

6. Exploring Florida’s Southeast Corner

A1A takes you all the way to Miami with plenty of alluring beaches along the way. For a break from the beach, get out on the water with a River Explorer Boat Tour from Vero Beach. Pontoon boats cruise along the Indian River Lagoon on a guided tour. Be on the lookout for dolphins and manatee.

Further south, the beaches of Palm Beach County offer a multitude of experiences. One of my grandkids’ favorite areas of Florida, we’re always on the lookout for the best kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkeling spots.

Fewer beachgoers and smooth water make Coral Cove Park at the north end of Jupiter a family favorite for a day filled with snorkeling and paddleboarding. When they’re ready to kayak, the Loxahatchee River Center provides the ideal atmosphere.

When you’re ready to refuel, the Dune Dog Café serves up hot dogs and seafood with a fun Caribbean vibe. More sand and sea options as you continue down the Atlantic Coast from Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale and on to Miami’s South Beach, where art deco and Cuban cuisine unite.

7. Naples to Miami via the Tamiami Trail

For an immersion in Florida’s iconic natural wetlands, nothing beats a drive on the Tamiami Trail. Beginning in Naples on Florida’ Gulf Coast, the road travels southeast through the Big Cypress National Preserve, the Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park before reaching Miami.

Live alligators and other intriguing exhibits can be found at the Oasis Visitor Center in Big Cypress National Preserve. In Everglades National Park , Junior Ranger programs keep the kids engaged. Hiking trails, biking trails, canoe trips, airboat rides and tram tours showcase the “river of grass” and its diverse wildlife including the superstar gators. If you’re up for a night in the swamp, front country camping sites Long Pine Key Campground and Flamingo Campground accommodate tents and RVs.

Fishing and snorkeling await in Biscayne National Park, which is 95% underwater. In Miami, a visit to Little Havana offers a glimpse into Cuban culture and some of the best Cuban food anywhere.

8. Head Out to Sea: Miami to Key West

Head to the Florida Keys on the 124-mile Overseas Highway. From Miami to Key West, it’s one of Florida’s most scenic drives. Discover underwater wonders as you and the kids snorkel at America’s first undersea park— John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. If you’d rather stay dry, glass-bottom boat tours provide a peek beneath the surface.

Don’t miss the chance to feed the family’s sweet tooth at Mile Marker 100.5. Here you’ll find the colorful Key Largo Chocolates , which serves incredibly delicious chocolate truffles and ice cream. Try my favorite…key lime pie on a stick!

If you have little fishermen in your family like I do, a stop in Duck Key for a family fishing trip guarantees smiles—and maybe even some fish. Include an overnight stay at the fab Hawks Cay, one of the nation’s top family resorts.

Don’t miss the Turtle Hospital in Marathon located at mile marker 48.5. Here volunteers rescue rehabilitate and release sick and injured sea turtles. The daily guided educational tours explain more about these adorable creatures. We even got to meet a few of the loveable patients.

Arriving in Key West, let the kids work off excess energy with a climb to the top of the iconic lighthouse. Key West Aquarium has open tanks to let little hands touch starfish and other mellow sea creatures. End the day at the Mallory Square sunset celebration amid street performers and irresistible conch fritters.

9. Road Trip in Florida’s Central West Coast

Hugging the Gulf of Mexico, Florida’s West Coast brings more beautiful beaches to the landscape. Beyond the beaches, charming communities offer unique experiences. Explore the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs. Then, watch the kids grow wide-eyed at the realization that sponges don’t only come from Target! Be sure to indulge in a taste of Greece at one of the many Greek restaurants in town.

Clearwater Beach represents the quintessential beach town on Florida’s Gulf Coast. A boardwalk-style promenade lined with shops, restaurants and beachside attractions, the Beach Walk attracts walkers, joggers, roller-bladers, skateboarders and cyclists. Rent bicycles and join the fun.

If you want to venture further, the Pinellas Trail offers an escape into nature. Or, check out the Courtney Campbell Trail—a 9.5-mile bike trail connecting Clearwater to Tampa Bay. Be sure to schedule some time at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

Things to Do in Tampa

Venture into Tampa’s downtown district where a 2.4-mile Riverwalk winds alongside the Hillsborough River. Take a break from the sun with a visit to the Glazer Children’s Museum . More than 170 interactive exhibits spread across 20 themed areas will ignite the imagination of your little ones.

My grandkids can never resist a milkshake. If you have the same taste in your family, head to Hyde Park’s iconic Goody Goody. You’ll find tasty burgers, pies, all-day breakfasts, short-order diner plates and milkshakes in a classic American diner atmosphere.

10. Explore Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast

Continuing south from Tampa Bay, more sugary white sand beaches unfold in places like St. Pete Beach, Anna Maria Island, Sarasota and Venice. You’re literally spoiled for choice when it comes to the Sunshine State’s Gulf Coast beaches.

But, if you continue to Florida’s Southwest coast toward Fort Myers, you’ll find Sanibel Island. Arguably one of Florida’s prettiest beaches, Sanibel boasts soft white sand, an abundance of seashells and a laid-back vibe. Be sure to check out the J.N. “Ding” Darling Wildlife Preserve . This 6,400-acre pristine mangrove estuary provides sanctuary to dolphins, manatees, countless reptiles and more than 252 species of birds.

Whatever road you choose, you’re certain to return home with priceless memories of your family’s fun Florida road trip. Drive safe!

It’s a must-visit destination to take your child at least once in their lifetime and Spring Break is the perfect time to visit “The Most Magical Place on Earth.”

During the spring, the weather is warm during the day with cool and pleasant temperatures early in the morning and at night.  This makes it perfect for exploring the theme parks and swimming in your hotel’s pool.

There is plenty to do at Walt Disney World, no one will ever be bored. It has rides and attractions for the youngest baby and thrill rides for those adrenaline seekers . There are also spectacular night-time shows.

Walt Disney World also offers plenty of fun dining experiences including dining with your favorite Disney character or Disney princess.

Speaking of princesses, little girls will love getting pampered at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and getting transformed into their favorite princess.

Indian Rocks Beach

Indian Rocks Beach

By Lanie from Make More Adventures

On Florida’s Gulf Coast, located between Clearwater Beach and the St. Pete Beaches, Indian Rocks Beach is calm, family-friendly, and easy to get around.

The number one thing to do on Indian Rocks Beach is the same as any other beach, though IRB (as it is known to the locals) isn’t as crowded as its surrounding beaches, and it has less of a party scene during spring break. Of course, the best thing to do on Indian Rocks Beach is to go to the beach.

With white sandy beaches and generally calm water , Indian Rocks Beach is the perfect beach to take the kids. Parking isn’t far from the water so you don’t have to lug your things too far. Surrounded by water, Indian Rocks Beach is only a few blocks wide.

If you want to get off of the beach, but still play outside, Indian Rocks Beach has a water park. Splash Harbor Water Park has waterslides, a lazy river, and a splash zone for younger kids as well as a large swimming pool.

Families can stay at Holiday Inn and Suites Clearwater Beach South Harborside which is located at Splash Harbor Water Park and just a few minutes walk away from the beach.

Those who want can head to nearby Clearwater Beach for a larger variety of activities and restaurants, though there are plenty of things to do on Indian Rocks Beach with kids .

Adventure seekers will love the unique experience of flying in a seaplane . These single-engine pontoon planes take off from the water and fly at low altitudes to give a bird’s eye view of the towns, lakes, and wetlands below.

Enjoy spring produce at the many local U-pick farms in Mount Dora . March and April are perfect for the strawberry and blueberry season. These farms host plenty of old-fashioned, family-friendly activities that make a perfect afternoon.

Everglades National Park

Kayaking through the mangrove in Everglades NP, Florida

By Karen from Travel Mad Mum

A major draw to the Everglades is its location in Southern Florida, with a favorable climate all year round.

Known for its wildlife, marshland, diverse bird life, and scenic hikes, the Everglades is a wonderful nature experience in the region.

The national park features some picturesque hiking trails , an ideal way to discover the flora and fauna within the region. The most family-friendly trails are Anhinga Trail, Gumbo Limbo Trail & Eco-Pond Trails. Exploring the park on foot offers a unique view of the park as the trails wind through the vast wetlands. It is not uncommon to see alligators, birds, and other wildlife.

Several boardwalks, namely, Pahayokee Overlook, Mahogany Hammock Trail, and West Lake Trail provide access to the park’s beautiful mangroves and other vegetation.

For the adventurous family, a kayak tour of the Mangrove Tunnel is a lovely way to explore the park with kids. It is the perfect alternative to an airboat which can sometimes disturb the animals.

Another great option for little ones is to join the junior ranger program . It comes with a backpack jam-packed with things to do for a day at Everglades National Park .

The visitor center is another top family activity. It offers a wide range of information about the park through educational displays, orientation films, and informational brochures.

Preparing when hiking in the Everglades National Park is essential. Wearing protective clothing, appropriate footwear, and carrying plenty of snacks to stay energized, a water bottle, insect repellent, and sunscreen for kids are essentials to have when visiting the Everglades. It can get quite hot and in some cases, there is very little shade.

It’s also worth reminding the kids to keep their distance from the wildlife.

Orange City

Blue Springs State Park, FL

By Alexandra from East Coast Contessa

Orange City, Florida is a popular place for travelers road-tripping through the Sunshine State. Once you visit, it’s easy to see why! Located an hour northwest of Orlando , it’s the perfect destination in Florida for a family Spring Break.

Home to one of the most popular freshwater springs in the U.S., Orange City is thriving with a vibrant history, museums, parks, and scenic nature trails.

The most popular attraction in Orange City is easily Blue Spring State Park along the St. Johns River. In addition to beautiful nature trails, diving, and snorkeling activities , visitors also have a chance to catch a glimpse of the Florida manatee. In fact, it’s one of the best places to view manatees from mid-November to early March.

Inside Blue Spring State Park there is also the Thursby House . It’s a charming colonial house that offers a glimpse into the lives of the settlers that lived in Orange City during the 18th and 19th centuries. The park is open from 8 AM to sunset and costs $6 per vehicle.

After you’re done exploring the great outdoors at Blue Spring State Park, head to Family Fun Town for what the name implies: fun! This entertainment center features batting cages, go-karts, an arcade, and mini golf. It’s a perfect spot to host a birthday party, a group outing, or a family get-together.

If you want to stay at a family-friendly property in town, the Holiday Inn Express is a great option. Located off I-4S, it’s exactly halfway between Daytona Beach and Orlando. It offers free breakfast, free parking, a shuttle bus service, a gym, and a pool . If you want more options, look in Daytona Beach (32 minutes away), or Orlando (36 minutes).

Cedar Key, FL

By Vicky from Buddy The Traveling Monkey

One of the best spring break destinations in Florida for families is Cedar Key, Florida. It has a laid-back attitude and it’s the perfect place to relax and have fun with your loved ones . There are a lot of  things to do in Cedar Key . Even though it’s relatively small, the town of  Cedar Key has some great restaurants, shops, and museums.

It’s also a great destination if your family wants to spend time outdoors . Cedar Key is in North Central Florida along the Gulf of Mexico. Being on the water makes it perfect for those who love kayaking, canoeing, or going out on a boat.

There are also a few trails and parks around Cedar Key . Cedar Key State Park is especially popular. The Cedar Key National Wildlife Refuge is also fun to explore, especially if you are a birder.

If you want to spend some time indoors, stop into the Cedar Key Historical Society Museum , which displays the history of the area.

Driving there is pretty easy since it’s literally at the end of Florida State Road 24. If you’re flying in, the closest airport to Cedar Key with commercial flights is the Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV), which is about an hour away.

For your spring break getaway, consider staying at Seahorse Landing , they have condos near the water with great amenities.

Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach, FL

By Pam from Our Adventure is Everywhere

Just north of Fort Lauderdale, is the quieter, more family-oriented Pompano Beach , Florida. Although often overlooked when planning a family trip to Florida, Pompano Beach is ideal, because it’s close enough to the action of the larger city if you’d like an afternoon or evening of excitement but far enough away to enjoy quality family time.

The weather is lovely any time of the year, and the beaches are especially nice from April through October .

When you need a break from the beach, there are plenty of fun things to do , a highlight being the water taxi . Pompano is often called the “Venice of America” due to the extensive network of canals . Purchase an all-day pass and explore the area from a different point of view, getting off and on the water taxis throughout the day. Kids who love boats will especially love this!

Hotels in Pompano tend to be a bit more laid back than the high rises of nearby Fort Lauderdale and Miami, so a terrific choice for families is the Club Wyndham Santa Barbara . With a great location, pool, hot tub, and condo-style rooms (with kitchens) , it’s a perfect beach vacation property.

If a relaxing, true beach vacation is what you are looking for on your next family vacation, Pompano Beach should be one to consider!

Naples and Marco Island

Marco Island, FL

By Lori from Naples Florida Travel Guide

When a spring break vacation for the family is just around the corner, look no further than Naples and Marco Island on southwest Florida’s Paradise Coast . Spring is the dry season in southwest Florida. With no daily storms or rain showers, the humidity is low and the daily temperatures are warm and comfortable.

This is a great time of year for family and kid-friendly outdoor activities . The beaches are still relatively uncrowded and the gentle Gulf waters are refreshing and warm. Rent a boat in Naples or Marco to take the family sightseeing or book a dolphin and manatee tour to see these amazing creatures in the wild.

Naples and Marco both have jet ski and kayak rentals as well as stand-up paddle boards . Two favorite activities families will love include taking a boat tour to Keewaydin Island for its remote beaches and native wildlife, and a sunset catamaran cruise out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Naples boasts some of the top-rated beaches in Florida including those at Lowdermilk Park , which offers watersport rentals and a concession stand.

For a unique kid-friendly experience nothing beats the soft white sand and hunting for seashells at Tigertail Beach on Marco Island , where getting to the beach is half the fun. The adventure begins by wading waist-deep across a shallow lagoon from the inner beach to the Gulf. The lagoon beach has paddling rentals, a great bird-watching tower that’s easy to climb, a concession stand, outdoor showers, and restrooms.

There is a long list of accommodations in both cities, and an equally long list of places to eat. Two family favorites are the Naples Grande Beach Resort with one of the best kid-friendly pools in Naples, and the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort & Spa.

Anna Maria Island

Bradenton Beach, Anna Maria Island, FL

By Nikki from She Saves She Travels

If you’re looking for the best kid-friendly spring break destinations in Florida, look no further than Anna Maria Island , Florida. This sleepy beach town is the perfect island getaway if you’re looking for laid-back beach vibes and sunshine.

Anna Maria Island is located about an hour away from Sarasota , Florida. Grab flights to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, then a rental car to get to the island. With extremely limited public transportation on the island, a rental car is your best bet for getting around.

One of the most popular activities for spring break is hitting the beach. After all, the beaches on Anna Maria Island are some of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast! With crisp, white sand and bright emerald water, they’re perfect for relaxing, swimming, or water activities.

The downtown area is quaint and has just what you’ll need for spring break. Visit the historic Bridge Street Pier, visit the farmers market, do a little shopping, or grab some food . Don’t forget ice cream at the Small Town Creamery !

Spring is an especially delightful time in Anna Maria Island because the manatees are really active . Bean Point is a great location to try to spot them . If you’re up for more nature and an adventure, try kayaking through mangrove trees down the island in Lido Key . Such a fun experience for spring break!

Amelia Island

Florida - Amelia Island

By Stephanie from History Fangirl

Amelia Island is a family-friendly destination in northeastern Florida, just forty-five minutes away from Jacksonville. However, it might be another world. The pace is slower, so leave plenty of time to meander around town, relax on the beach, and lounge by your hotel’s pool.

For families looking to mix recreation with a bit of education, there’s a ton here for young travelers to learn, making an Amelia Island weekend or week the perfect opportunity to mix learning with fun .

Amelia Island has played an outsized role in American history many times over. In fact, eight different nations and rulers have hoisted their flags over the island. You can learn all about it on the Eight Flags tour, or you can learn more at the Amelia Island Museum of History.

For families wanting to check out more recent history, head to American Beach and the A. L. Lewis Museum , which documents American Beach’s time as one of the most important African American beaches during the era of Jim Crow.

Of course, there are also a myriad of outdoor activities available, including kayaking, birdwatching, and looking for dolphins out on the Amelia River . An Amelia River cruise to see the wild horses on Cumberland Island is also a favorite among young tourists.

If you looking for a great place to stay during your trip, check into the SpringHill Suites by Marriott , a new three-star oceanside hotel.

Dunedin, FL

By Destiny from Guided By Destiny

If you’re looking for a unique Spring Break vacation spot for the whole family, then Dunedin, Florida is a perfect choice! Situated on the west coast of the Sunshine State, this beautiful city is packed with things to see and do that make it an ideal family getaway. You will fall in love with its range of beaches, parks, shopping areas, and outdoor activities.

To start off your trip, why not head down to the charming downtown area to enjoy some shopping, dining, and sightseeing ? Along with its range of boutiques, restaurants, and attractions , there’s also a sandy beach perfect for sunbathing or having a picnic.

Next up is to visit Honeymoon Island , a serene and peaceful island known for its bird sanctuary , a wide array of walking trails , and a wealth of stunning beaches and nature spots. Here, families can have fun by playing or taking part in some beachcombing – but do remember to bring your sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

At the Dunedin Causeway, you can rent sailboats, kayaks, or paddleboards for various time frames. You can rent for as little as an hour, but if you rent for any amount over two hours, you are able to take your rental over to Caladesi Island and explore the pristine waters around the island.

Finally, if you’re looking for the ideal hotel for a family-friendly vacation, I suggest staying at the Hyatt Place in Clearwater , which is only minutes away from Dunedin. With its comfortable and contemporary rooms, on-site swimming pool , and handy location close to lots of attractions , it’s a great option for those wanting a convenient stay.

Key West

By Jolayne from Just Wander More

While you are enjoying the sun and beach of the Florida Keys , discover a variety of family-friendly activities in Key West. Spring Break is the perfect time to visit, especially if you’re coming from a snowy climate.

There are plenty of places to stay with stunning views in Key West. The Reach Key West , part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, boasts a pristine private beach and a central location.

Some of the best things to do include:

  • Take pictures at the Southernmost Point in the US
  • Discover the history and sites of Key West on a scavenger hunt
  • Play at the beach
  • Shop along Duval Street
  • Take pictures at sunset
  • Enjoy sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking excursions
  • Try Key Lime pie

If you have time for a day trip, Bahia Honda State Park is a short drive from Key West. The sand and sun are perfect ingredients for a family day at the beach. Add in a snorkel tour , and memories are sure to be made.

Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas, Fort Jefferson

By Patricia from Ze Wandering Frogs

Dry Tortugas National Park is a remote national park located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 70 miles west of Key West, Florida. The park is well-known for its crystal-clear water, gorgeous beaches, and exciting heritage . Any South Florida itinerary that takes you from Miami to Key West should include a visit to Dry Tortugas .

Visit Fort Jefferson , constructed in the middle of the nineteenth century, to learn more about the park’s past. Snorkeling in the island’s pristine seas and taking in abundant marine life is one of the best things to do in the Dry Tortugas.

Another well-liked pastime is bird viewing , where you may see frigates and brown pelicans. A fantastic option to take in the magnificent scenery and the warm seas around Dry Tortugas is to sail around the island.

There are no accommodations on Dry Tortugas. However, primitive camping is permitted in dedicated areas . Unfortunately, water is not available on the island. Thus anyone planning to spend the night there must be completely independent and self-reliant.

Key West International Airport (EYW) is the nearest airport to Dry Tortugas National Park. There are alternative possibilities, such as Miami International Airport (MIA), even though Key West is three to four hours distant from that airport. Dry Tortugas can only be reached from Key West by seaplane or boat.

Temperatures in Dry Tortugas often range from 55°F to 65°F thanks to its subtropical climate. However, in summer, they can reach above 90°F, making Spring Break an ideal time to visit.

Come summer and you’ll be spoilt for choice on vacation rentals in Ponce Inlet, especially with the ‘can’t-believe-I-got-so-lucky’ deals and discounts.

South of Daytona and north of New Smyrna, Ponce Inlet is home to a gigantic population of snowbirds; these birds call it a season and head back north during the summer months.

Ponce Inlet is one of the quieter family vacation spots in Florida , exuding a residential feel that keeps families coming back.

The area’s beaches are wide, clean and plain spectacular, housing the famous Ponce de Leon Lighthouse and a bevy of great restaurants.

If you’re a foodie (or just like good food — come to think of it, who doesn’t?), don’t forget to dig into the seafood baskets at the fish camp-style Down the Hatch Seafood Company; you’ll have gorgeous water views to accompany your meal.

7. Marathon

Marathon

Marathon, FL Visit Website Social Media Open in Google Maps

The tropical islands of Florida and “budget-friendly” may not seem to fit in the same sentence, especially when you visit crowded, mainstream Key Largo or the super-famous Key West.

However, midway down the Keys is Marathon, a hidden budget-friendly gem.

Known for its barrier reef and lovely beaches where turtles nest, Marathon is a hotbed of marine conservation and research activities, with spots such as Curry Hammock State Park, Crane Point and The Dolphin Research Center.

Therefore, apart from setting the stage for one of the more affordable family beach vacations in Florida, the area also presents a ton of learning mixed with fun — no reason you can’t make the vacation a productive one as well.

Families generally like to visit Marathon when the sun isn’t burning them to a crisp; during the cooler months, renting bikes to explore the Old Seven Mile Bridge (free entry) leading to Pigeon Key is a popular idea.

Marathon is also a great spot for snorkeling; you can rent equipment and catch amazing views of shoals of tropical fish along the gorgeous Sombrero Beach.

Fort Myers is a popular family-favorite for the many vacation rentals and cheap-yet-decent motels on offer.

If you can tear yourself away from the white postcard-worthy sands of the Fort Myers Beach, explore the charming riverside district downtown, with its lovely buildings and restaurants.

Another great idea is to try your hand at fishing on the Fort Myers Beach Pier (you can rent equipment for a pretty cheap sum) or try the numerous mini-golf courses that dot the area.

Better yet, go classic — stroll along the lovely beaches, till the sun disappears over the horizon, picking up pretty seashells and seeing who in the family can collect the most.

The water, being shallow, is a great spot even for beginners and those who can’t swim.

The Bradenton Beach City Pier is another great spot to stroll along, replete with locals reeling in their catch — you could join in the fun and cast out your line too.

For some excellent wildlife cruises into the Sarasota Bay, consider Paradise Boat Tours; you could end up spotting stingrays, dolphins and even a manatee, if you’re extremely lucky.

I know what you’re thinking — Orlando and cheap?

Theme park tickets here cost a bomb.

Well, they do, but what if I told you that a vacation in Orlando isn’t only about the theme parks?

Many tourists are swept away by the thrill and grandeur of Orlando’s numerous theme parks, so they hardly ever end up exploring the other things on offer.

However, Orlando has plenty of family activities in store that don’t involve going to a theme park.

Visit downtown Orlando for a stroll around historic Thorton Park and the shores of Lake Eola, or hike through the Disney Wilderness Preserve’s oak hammocks, wetlands and Flatwoods free of cost, keeping your eyes peeled for sandhill cranes and eagles.

Don’t forget to visit the lively, vibrant Disney Springs — here, you’ll be treated to mind-blowing street performances, world-class dining and shopping sans any entry fee.

Being the top tourist attraction that it is, you can rest assured that with the tons of hotels on offer, you can find one that fits your budget quite easily in Florida’s tourism capital.

Additionally, Sanibel Island is relatively more peaceful and less crowded than other mainstream destinations.

Head to Bowman’s Beach for some of the best shelling in the world, or Lighthouse Beach for a trip down history lane in the lighthouse.

Additionally, you could explore the boardwalk that takes you through wetlands or cast your own line and try your luck at the fishing pier.

For some truly delicious seafood, try the Sanibel Fish House, where it’s “relaxed, family-friendly-dining vibes only”.

Meanwhile, the tweens and teens are sure to dig the Lazer Ops Extreme Gaming Arcade.

One of the star attractions, though, is the Florida Aquarium where the little ones can make friends with otters, sharks and alligators.

Though you’ll have to pre-book admission, it’s well worth the effort.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

When choosing the best cheap destinations in Florida, select the ones that perfectly fit your preferences and your family’s interests.

Also, check each place’s drawbacks and limitations.

The moment my toes hit the soft sands at Esme Miami Beach, I knew we’d struck gold.

The kids, bless their hearts, were off in a flash, their laughter getting carried off by the ocean breeze.

And oh, the ocean view from our room?

Absolutely divine.

It’s the kind of sight that makes you pause and soak it all in.

And Hilton Vacation Club Mystic Dunes Orlando?

Let’s just say, from the laughter-filled water park to the magic of Disney World, it was pure delight.

Hilton Vacation Club Mystic Dunes Orlando excels in family-friendliness, with a range of amenities and activities for families.

On the downside, the hotel has limited dining options on-site, which may require you to venture outside the property for meals.

Circa 39 Hotel Miami Beach is praised for its friendly, attentive staff and pet-friendly accommodations.

However, one drawback is that the hotel has limited in-room amenities.

If you want to stay at an excellent alternative to Circa 39 Hotel Miami Beach with more dining options, consider DoubleTree by Hilton at the Entrance to Universal Orlando.

But given its proximity to Universal Orlando, the hotel may have larger crowds, especially during peak seasons.

How I Picked The Destinations

As a travel writer, I had the opportunity to explore vacation destinations in Florida with my family.

I carefully researched each destination and stayed at the top-rated hotels and resorts.

Additionally, I talked to travelers and other families to make my reviews more accurate.

For the destinations I haven’t visited, I used insights from travel and review sites, forums, and other recommendations from fellow travelers.

Our Rating Method

I rate these family vacations based on the following criteria.

  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the affordability of every destination or property. Are food and entertainment included in the prices? Is it worth the money? What packages do they offer? These are the questions I ask myself when assessing the affordability of the vacation destination.
  • Safety: This is used to assess the safety of the destination. Is the area safe? Is the environment family-friendly? How are the crime rates? I ask these to ensure the safety of the stay.
  • Kid-Friendly Activities: I use this to assess the activities available for kids. Are there playgrounds or waterparks? Are there museums nearby to visit? Do they have kids’ clubs? I use these factors to assess how kid-friendly the activities on-site are.
  • Accessibility: This criterion is used to assess the convenience of the location. Does it have good transportation options? Is it located near airports or major highways? Are there restaurants and local attractions within walking distance? I ask these questions to evaluate the accessibility of the destination.
  • Accommodations: I use this criterion to rate accommodations. Are the rooms available spacious or interconnecting? Are kitchenettes available? Can you request a crib or high chair? Do they offer complimentary breakfast? These are the factors I consider when rating the accommodations.
  • Ease of Travel: This evaluates the accessibility of the destination. Is it in a convenient location that is easy to get to? Is it easily accessible by public transportation? Does it have enough parking space? Is it wheelchair accessible? I use these questions to assess this criterion.

florida trips for family

Overall, my experiences at these destinations have been incredible, each with its own unique charm and attractions.

What’s more, these destinations are the best cheap Florida family vacations.

The Hilton Vacation Club at Mystic Dunes was a pure delight.

From the laughter-filled water park to the convenient shuttle to Disney World, it was a hit.

Yet, I did wish they had a wider variety of on-site dining options.

We also had a delightful stay at Circa 39 Hotel Miami Beach, with its prime location near the beach and vibrant dining options.

Also, we loved the convenient location of DoubleTree by Hilton at the Entrance to Universal Orlando.

We quickly enjoyed the attractions and the magical atmosphere of the theme park.

But Esme Miami Beach was the best place for us.

Stepping into the vibrant world of Esme Miami Beach, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the breathtaking ocean view from our room.

The kids were thrilled by the bustling beach scene, although the crowds can peak at certain times.

Our room had a breathtaking ocean view, instantly setting a positive and tranquil tone for the day ahead.

It also allowed us to easily access the soft, sandy shores and enjoy the refreshing waters.

Folks know how to have fun in Clearwater . The beach town serves up plenty of entertainment to keep families occupied when they need a break from the beach.

Clearwater Beach

Speaking of the beach, Clearwater Beach lines a barrier island just across the bay from the city proper, a lot like New Smyrna Beach. The calm water is perfect for paddleboarding and parasailing while the white sand makes for glorious sandcastles. Cafes and shops set back from the water make it easy to spend the day relaxing on the island.

Sand Key Park

Sand Key Park is immediately south of Clearwater Beach by bridge and offers beach access and trails in addition to some natural, preserved swampland. Playgrounds and picnic facilities offer breaks from the water, and it’s a great alternative to Clearwater Beach for families looking for something a little less developed.

Clearwater Marine Adventures

Give them an eyepatch or a water pistol, children turn into pirates. Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise is always a hit with kids. Think treasure hunts, face-painting, and dance parties. Lucky travelers also see dolphins on their family-fun cruise.

If tourists miss the dolphins on their cruise, they can visit them in the Clearwater Marine Aquarium . The research and rescue center disguises entertainment in the name of education. Kids learn more about the ocean when they play and meet stingrays, turtles, sharks, and – of course – dolphins that live there.

Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens in Tampa provides a great day trip for families who love amusement parks. Staying in Clearwater keeps lodging prices down, and the beach town remains more affordable than Tampa’s big city prices.

Where To Stay In Clearwater

Tropical Inn and Suites has a pool, which is only half as exciting as the guest laundry facilities, the amenity families don’t realize they need until the two-year-old decides to soil every shirt in the suitcase. The aquarium is only three miles away, and the area boasts lots of coffee shops and restaurants.

Everglades

The Everglades are unlike any other place in the United States and stand as one of the most iconic national parks. The south Florida treasure covers over 2,000 square miles, and it bursts with opportunity for fans of the great outdoors hunting for a great deal.

Fun in the Park

Shark Valley may be the best place in the park to see a variety of wildlife. Tourists can walk, bike, or take a trolley, so there’s an age-appropriate option for children of all ages. The best time to visit is in the early morning, before the gators go into the water to hide from the sun and the other visitors fill the whole parking area.

The Anhinga Trail is one of the most family-friendly paths in the park. A combination of paved trails and wooden boardwalks, it takes kids over gator, turtle, and bird habitats. It’s hard to not see at least one interesting animal, and the route showcases the iconic wetlands – or river of grass – for which the park is best-known.

Most of the Everglades isn’t accessible by trail, and to see the heart of this swampy jewel, nature lovers need boats. Kayaks and canoes make excellent choices for families with older children experienced with water sports, but airboats are regional icons for a reason.

Nearby Cities

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are immediately northeast of the Everglades, and families who want to balance hiking and urban adventures have their pick of fun.

Where to Stay in the Everglades

Camping in wetlands isn’t for everyone, and Travelodge by Wyndham Florida City/Homestead/Everglades offers a clean, affordable hotel room near the main route into the park. It’s conveniently located by food and convenience shopping, so guests don’t waste energy better spent on hikes, boat rides, and exploration.

Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach is a sunny spot for the curious. Tourists who love museums have as much to love as those who come for the sun, and the Atlantic beach-town vibes compare to Daytona Beach.

Beach Access Parks

Four area parks offer beach access. Alan Shepard Park covers five acres in the peak tourist zone. It offers picnic pavilions and tables, a bathhouse, and a playground in addition to fishing and swimming. It’s also close enough to tourist boutiques for families to walk.

Sidney Fischer Park is twice as big with lots of picnic facilities and a playground. It also charges for parking instead of admittance, so it may be the cheaper option for families.

Lori Wilson Park has over 32 acres and includes a boardwalk through a Maritime Hammock ecosystem, a playground, and picnic facilities with grills.

Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park is the smallest with only two acres, but it still offers restrooms, showers, and picnic facilities.

It’s easier than you think to find family vacations in Florida on a budget. Check out our destinations, hotels, and tips.

Nature Break on Horseback

One of the best things besides the beach is horseback riding. A couple local stables take families on a trail riding experiences for guests with children as young as eight. It’s a unique way to get out in nature without the paved paths and crowds that sometimes sanitize state parks.

The Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is just north of Cocoa Beach. Packed with science demonstrations, historical exhibits, and real-life astronauts families can meet, greet, and snap a photo with, it’s one of Florida’s best attractions for the whole family.

It’s out of this world! Photo by AK

The Dinosaur Store

If kids are a little more down-to-earth, the Dinosaur Store and Museum of Dinosaurs and Ancient Cultures is right in Cocoa Beach. Life-size dinosaurs and authentic dinosaurs are just the start. The museum’s Adventure Zone includes live animal ambassadors, including American alligators, and kids can try their hand at panning for gemstones. There’s a lot happening in this little place.

Disney World

Cocoa Beach is also a short drive from Disney World . The parks are about an hour away, which is reasonable for a day trip. While Disney isn’t the most affordable family vacation destination, making the theme park a single-day event instead of a weekend-long commitment shaves off a big chunk of the price.

Where to Stay in Cocoa Beach

La Quinta Inn by Wyndham Cocoa Beach-Port Canaveral is one of the most affordable hotels within the bounds of Cocoa Beach. Travelers can walk from the hotel to Lori Wilson Park, and they have easy access to other parks, museums, and restaurants.

Pensacola sits at the end of the Florida Panhandle near the Alabama border on the Gulf of Mexico. The blend of beach fun and historic city charm give tourists a range of potential vacations. The range of family-fun attractions like miniature golf and escape rooms make it a bit like Myrtle Beach, a great fit for families who like keeping busy.

Gulf Islands National Seashore

While there are several water parks in the area, admission gets pricey quickly for large families. The best place to splash around is one of the area’s beautiful beaches. The Gulf Islands National Seashore is the country’s longest national seashore, and extensive efforts to keep the park clean and healthy makes for a literally uncluttered beach escape. The white sand beaches and expansive ocean views are perfect backdrops for family photos and Instagram moments. It’s a good place to go for a swim and enjoy an afternoon away from the crowds.

Sun, sea, sand. Photo by Lori Stevens

Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

Like St. Augustine , Pensacola has a historic lighthouse, and it may be the town’s most popular attraction. Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum provides kids with education, extensive views, and plenty of exhibits to keep curious minds occupied. The lighthouse dates back to 1858, and today the lighthouse keeper’s quarters have transformed into a window into history. Although it’s worth the trip, potential visitors should know that children under seven aren’t allowed to climb the lighthouse.

Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park

Uncle Sandy’s Macaw Bird Park is a colorful break from the usual. The small rescue takes in abandoned or abused birds ranging from the titular macaws to peacocks, cockatoos, and emus. Guests get to feed, dance, and have pictures taken with the residents.

Where to Stay in Pensacola

The Gulf Coast Inn sits just across the bay from Downtown Pensacola and about five minutes from the beach. It’s essentially a boutique hotel for around ten bucks more than the cheapest hotel chains. A small pool and ample privacy may make it more attractive to families with small children who need to wind down after a long day exploring the city.

DON’T MISS: 10 Best Spring Break Getaways for Families

The Florida Keys are expensive as a rule, but Marathon is the exception. It offers the sun, sand, and sea visitors expect from the Keys with the benefits of lower tourist density and unique natural attractions. As one of the Middle Keys, it’s also within easy day trip distance of Key lime pie in Key West .

The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center

The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center give families with critter-curious kids the chance to learn about these respective animals and see them up close. Children can feed turtles at the Turtle Hospital, and the Dolphin Research Center drops families into the water with their rescued dolphins.

Beaches and Parks

Sombrero Beach is one of the area’s most affordable attractions, and what’s a Florida Keys vacation without splashing in the blue waves? Further out, Sombrero Reef is a technicolor snorkeling and diving adventure as well. Just north of Marathon, Curry Hammock State Park has Atlantic-facing sites for campers with tents or RVs. Guests can walk and wade on the beach, slide kayaks into the ocean with the launch, kick around snorkeling and diving areas, and explore historic hiking and bike paths. It works as a day’s entertainment for the entire family or a base of operations.

The island also has its fair share of mangroves, and kayak tours are a great option for families with older kids. It’s like a taste of Sanibel Island without the price tag.

Where to Stay in Marathon

Hotel accommodations at Captain Pip’s Marina and Hideaway strike a balance between value and adventure. The small resort offers low rates, plenty of amenities, a water-side pool, and their own range of tour and snorkeling experiences. Famous faces like Ernest Hemmingway and Elizabeth Taylor have visited Captain Pip’s, too, so travelers get an extra shine of celebrity to the stories they take home.

Florida has options, and whether a family wants to experience ecotourism or play pirate, there’s a destination waiting. On a friendly note, while packing, be sure the bug spray goes in the same bag as the sunscreen, and keep the aloe handy.

Parents arrested on Florida beach after they were found passed out, kids gone

By CBS Miami Team

March 20, 2024 / 10:00 AM EDT / CBS/CNN

MIAMI - A family's Florida vacation ended with the parents arrested  and their two young children found wandering Daytona Beach.

A Georgia couple was arrested after Volusia County deputies found them Saturday afternoon passed out on the beach surrounded by open cans of alcohol. Their children were nowhere in sight.

According to the sheriff's office, someone called them after watching the couple drink too much, leaving their two little kids to wander off along the popular beach.

The Daytona Beach Shores city ordinance states it's unlawful for anyone to drink any alcoholic beverage on the beach. Those found in violation are subjected to a fine of up to $500 or jail for up to 60 days, or both.

A deputy's body-worn camera shows the moment a disheveled Timothy Stephens realized both children, ages 5 and 7 were nowhere in sight. The children were not even at the beach at the time.

Deputies found them at a nearby hotel in the swimming pool unsupervised.

Stephens and Alyssia Langley were handcuffed and taken into custody.

"Where are my kids going to go?" asked Langley.

"To the family resource center, we're going to take care of them, they'll feed them, they'll clothe them," replied a deputy.

When deputies went to take them to jail, Stephens reportedly tried to make a run for it but ended up knocking himself unconscious on the hard-packed sand.

The state's Department of Children and Families cared for the two children until their grandfather arrived from Georgia to take custody of the kids.

Both parents were released from jail on Sunday.
