We'd all like to be on vacation 24/7, but that's not possible for most of us. The only solution, then, is to make sure your house—and especially your bedroom —is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life. If the word escape has you picturing a passport's worth of far-flung destinations, then a bohemian-style retreat might be exactly what you need. The best boho bedrooms make you feel like you're coming home to a laid-back, effortlessly stylish resort.

Bohemian design is a well-established style these days—stores like Anthropologie and World Market are practically dedicated to it—but it got its start on the fringes of society among travelers, writers, and artists whose lifestyle inspired an equally free-spirited design aesthetic. Though it has a mass appeal these days, boho design hasn't abandoned its vagabond roots. It still combines global influences and a no-rules approach to design.

To design your own ideal getaway, you'll want to zero in on inspiration that mixes colors, patterns, and textures in ways that feel eclectic and exciting yet spontaneous. A rich palette of nature-inspired hues and jewel tones is key, as are nubby upholstery and natural textures (think rattan, wicker, and seagrass) that bring nature indoors. Below, we've gathered 25 boho bedroom ideas from designers to help you create your space.

Go Bold With Color

a room with two beds and a dresser with butterflies on it

In boho design, it's not unusual to see many saturated hues combine forces in a singular room. Instead of shying away from color—as many people tend to do in the bedroom—lean into vibrant choices like punchy pink, zesty lemon, and tropical teal as Heather Peterson did in this kids' room.

Install a Ceiling Detail

More is more when it comes to texture in boho bedrooms—and that includes the ceiling. In this Hawaiian escape, Breeze Giannasio added a grounding layer by covering the vaulted ceiling in wood planks reminiscent of the surrounding bamboo forests.

Choose a Standout Fixture

For the finishing touch in this Florida bedroom, Lauren Liess relied on a dangling grass chandelier to illuminate the space and bring on the bohemian vibes. Combined with oversized palm leaves, a vintage gilded mirror, and an embellished gold bed, it perfectly channels the surrounding tropical environment.

Carve Out Some Privacy

Nothing says "private escape" quite like a bed nook where you literally can't be found. Such was the goal in this space by French & French Interiors, designed for the 2021 House Beautiful Whole Home . Though it's technically part of a larger media room, this secluded hideaway—guarded by bold patterned curtains—offers up a dreamlike boho retreat where you can while away the afternoon.

Pile on the Prints

house beautiful whole home 2023 1906 hinsdale\, illinois house

In a boho bedroom, a singular print just won't do—and neither will two or three. Eschew any rules and pile on the prints for a maximalist look that feels collected and effervescent. In this primary suite designed by Isabel Ladd for the 2023 House Beautiful Whole Home , a spunky Morris & Co. wallpaper combines with an array of prints—from florals and gingham to tiger stripes and ikat—for a room that embodies the "more is more, less is a bore" aesthetic, as Ladd put it.

Lay Down a Bold Rug

a bedroom with a bed and a lamp

The foundation of your room often sets the precedent for its design, making your rug one of the most important pieces you can pick. Peter Dunham kicked things off on the right foot in this boho bedroom with a bold vintage Indian dhurrie in shades of pink and blue, echoing the Hamptons coastline right outside the window.

Play With Proportions

If you have the opportunity to renovate or build a home from the ground up, playing with the proportions of your bedroom can be a great way to give it a boho feel. In this space by Melissa Colgan , hand-hewn wood beams and an expansive vaulted ceiling offset large and small windows (both dressed in curtains custom-made using a block print-inspired Martyn Lawrence Bullard fabric). The airy ceilings are high enough for a woven chandelier.

Incorporate Live Plants

a bedroom with a bed and a painting on the wall

You could make the case for live greenery in pretty much any room, but it's an essential component of a boho bedroom. Here, Justina Blakeney (the indisputable queen of boho design) relied on a sprawling ficus tree to breathe life into the corner of this eclectic retreat, which is made even more enticing by eye-catching wallpaper, a vintage Moroccan wedding blanket, and a duo of French doors leading out to a terrace.

Add a Graphic Touch

a bedroom with a bed and a chair

While boho design is largely known for more free-flowing patterns (think ikat, floral batik, and block print), incorporating a more structured and linear print into your design is a great way to keep things feeling balanced. In this Florida vacation home designed by Ashley Gilbreath , striped wallpaper from Farrow & Ball teams with more boho-leaning elements like a rattan chair and printed bed linens for the ultimate mix-and-match bedroom sanctuary.

Bring Depth With Paint

northern florida home of designer whitney leigh morris and her husband, adam winkleman interior designer whitney leigh morris architect jennifer langford

Boho spaces have a patina to them—they always feel like they've been around a while and have seen a bit of life. To give a newer home the same timeworn feel, consider painting the walls with a limewash paint or Roman clay finish. Whitney Leigh Morris chose a mossy green from Color Atelier to lend aged appeal to her space.

Cut a Curvy Figure

boho bedroom headboard

Boho design is all about uniqueness, and that extends to the shape of your furniture. Instead of sticking to a standard design, look for a creative headboard that can double as art. In this city escape, designer Nick Olsen made an intricate curved and notched one—upholstered in bright fuchsia—the focal point of the space.

Hang a Playful Touch

boho hanging chair

The number-one rule of boho design? Don't take it too seriously! With an ethos this irreverent, there's always room for a playful touch or charming accent. The macramé hanging chair (complete with a cozy sheepskin) that Schuyler Samperton worked into her Miami Beach getaway is a fun example.

Anchor With a Dark Hue

los angeles bungalow by designer nick olsen

Boho design may be notorious for its brighter color palettes, but every room needs a hit of black to ground it. In this stunning Los Angeles home, Nick Olsen anchored an assortment of reds, burgundies, and deep pinks with hits of black, namely through accessories and painted window casings.

Highly Quirky Collectibles

a bed with a red and white pillow

Put eclecticism at the forefront of your boho bedroom by trading the traditional art-focused gallery wall for something a bit more unexpected. In this New Jersey beach house (which belongs to the owner of Anthropologie), Colleen Bashaw hung a creative collection of mirrors —all with different wood detailing—above the headboard in place of artwork.

Incorporate Tons of Texture

a bedroom with a bed and furniture

News flash: Neutral colors can skew boho too! The key lies in your mix of textures, which should appear throughout your entire space to keep things visually interesting. This vacation home bedroom by Nicola Manganello offers up a master class on striking that perfect balance, incorporating everything from planked wood ceilings and woven lampshades to bouclé armchairs and a sheepskin rug.

Create Some Balance

house beautiful whole home 2023 1906 hinsdale\, illinois house

If you go hard in any singular vibe, you run the risk of your room feeling themed, which is why designers tend to mix elements from different styles and eras. To tone down the eccentricity of boho design, consider incorporating some traditional elements, as seen in this bedroom dreamed up by Color Drunk Designs for the 2023 Whole Home . Pro Jenna Gross teamed whimsical wallpaper and boho-esque prints with traditional furniture and timeless lighting for a look that'll last the ages.

Frame a Few Textiles

a bedroom with a bed and a fireplace

At its core, this primary suite is pretty simple, with white walls and streamlined furniture that doesn't lean too heavily in any one design direction. To make it stand out—and dip a toe gracefully into a boho aesthetic— Shazalynn Cavin Winfrey turned to vintage textiles, which she set in minimalistic black frames for a sleek yet collected look.

Add Some Edge

a bedroom with a bed and a chair

While boho design is traditionally thought of as light and airy, there's no rule saying you can't experiment with its darker side. In her teenage son's bedroom, Shavonda Gardner combined inky black mudcloth-inspired wallpaper with a Moroccan pouf, patterned quilt, and neon sign for a space that's packed with personality.

Drape Some Curtains

a room with a brick wall and a white ceiling with a white and black bird on it

For a soft and billowy effect that just begs for an afternoon nap, hang a few sets of bed curtains. Traditionally seen on (and added to) canopy beds , this luxe addition calls to mind breezy poolside afternoons, but you can easily bring that feeling indoors. Here, Bailey Li added privacy to her loft "bedroom" and called attention to its soaring ceilings with gauzy curtains.

a bed with a red and white comforter

There's just something about a low-slung platform bed that feels casual and welcoming, making it the perfect piece for a boho bedroom. In this sunny space, the design pros at Studio Shamshiri opted for a streamlined walnut wood platform bed, piled high with boho textiles and pillows.

Afro Boho Bedroom Tour: Decor, Furniture & Style

Home Style & Design with Denise Joy

It is time to walk you through the Afro Boho bedroom I created for my guests. My entire home, including my home gym, is designed in the Afro Boho style. Interestingly enough, I have been using Afro Boho design for many years and I sometimes called it Afro Parisian, but today we claim it as Afro Boho.

I really enjoy Afro Boho decor because of its five main characteristics.

afro boho bedroom, Appreciation for artistry craftsmanship and individuality

One, an appreciation for artistry, craftsmanship, and individuality.

afro boho bedroom, Honoring one s heritage and legacy

Two, honoring one's heritage and legacy.

afro boho bedroom, Bold vibrant colors and carefully curated neutrals

Three, the use of bold, vibrant colors along with carefully curated neutrals for balance.

afro boho bedroom, Eclectic complementary pieces

Four, the harmony created from combining eclectic complementary pieces.

Five, blending modern, ethnic, and classic vintage furnishings and decor.

afro boho bedroom, Bookshelf

There are many elements to the Afro Boho design style, but these five main characteristics are found in any Afro Boho designed room.

afro boho bedroom, Designing a guest bedroom with different zones

In this guest bedroom, I did what I always do. I designed the room using my zone theory. Design zone theory means thinking about how the room can be aesthetically and functionally enjoyed no matter how small or large it is.

afro boho bedroom, Afro Boho guest bedroom

This guest bedroom is designed with three zones in mind.

afro boho bedroom, Sleeping and resting area

This first is a luxurious sleeping and resting area.

afro boho bedroom, Cozy book reading zone

The second is a cozy book reading zone.

afro boho bedroom, Clothing storage zone

And the third is a clothing storage zone.

afro boho bedroom, Layered textures and patterns

Every guest bedroom deserves a cozy, inviting place to lay your head. Whenever I have guests over, they always call this room the bed and breakfast room. In this guest bedroom, I layered many different textures and patterns, creating harmony through color theory.

afro boho bedroom, Afro Boho color palette

The three main colors in this particular color theory are tones of orange, red, and rust, along with gold and pops of turquoise. In any design, neutrals are a given. The use of brown, tan, beige, black, and gray helps to ground the bolder colors in the room.

afro boho bedroom, Afro Boho style furniture

Afro Boho loves to combine sophistication and playfulness.

afro boho bedroom, Modern contemporary artwork

In the artwork, you have the modern contemporary piece over the bed, and on the side of the bed, the playful sneaker-designed artwork. This space says welcome home.

afro boho bedroom, Chill zone

Next up is the chill zone. This area invites you to grab a book or a magazine, or maybe just sit with your thoughts and relax.

afro boho bedroom, Layering textures

In this zone, there are more patterns and layering of textures. I use African mud cloth on the bench, cheetah print pillows, and that gorgeous chevron pattern in the leather layered rug, on top of the carpeting.

afro boho bedroom, Record collection

There's also an acknowledgment of heritage and legacy in this zone, with the record collection sitting on top of the mudcloth bench.

Our final zone is the storage and heritage legacy zone. I purchased this storage armoire because when I remodeled this home, I stole the closet space in this room and added it to the small bathroom.

afro boho bedroom, Afro Boho bathroom

Here's a quick look at my Afro Boho bathroom.

afro boho bedroom, Shower area

Believe it or not, the shower area was even smaller, so I stole the two-foot closet from the guest bedroom and added that space to make this room bigger. That left me with no storage area for guests in this room.

afro boho bedroom, Modern storage armoire

Adding this modern storage armoire helps this guest room maintain its functionality.

afro boho bedroom, Thrifted woven reed baskets and rattan purse

On top of the armoire, I have natural elements that are characteristic of Afro Boho, with the thrifted woven reed baskets and this pretty nifty purse that's made out of rattan.

afro boho bedroom, Between the World and Me gift

In the heritage legacy category, I have a gift given to me by the creators of the film, Between the World and Me, thanking me for my role in curating a talkback panel about the film, and it is even signed by the director, Kamilah Forbes.

afro boho bedroom, Afro Boho mirror

I have a bit of a bonus. I'm sharing my hand-painted DIY artwork. I purchased this mirror at the thrift store for ten bucks and transformed it with this unique, dope art design.

Afro Boho bedroom tour

I hope this Afro Boho bedroom room tour inspired you. Adding more elements of the Afro Boho design style to your home isn't hard. All you have to do is remember the five main characteristics. Let me know what you think about it in the comment section below.

30 Summer Home Tours

Modern Bohemian Summer Living Room

My living room has seen quite a few changes over the last two years. My styled started out with a vintage farmhouse vibe. It quickly changed to a more modern farmhouse style. However now, I’ve enjoyed adding modern boho elements.

Hoya wax plant in a modern bohemian living room.

Plants are a huge part of my decor. I have many posts sharing how I care for them and which indoor plants are my favorite . They are such an easy addition to a home and really bring in those bohemian design vibes.

Velvet couch with an open entryway.

So today, I’m excited to share a few tips for how I use plants and other elements to add touches of boho design to my living room. Plus, I’ll be sharing how I’ve designed with summer in mind!

How to get the Modern Boho Look

My design style is not 100% bohemian. I have quite a few modern pieces of furniture, plus some more farmhouse style pieces as well. However, adding one statement piece of boho furniture really took the look of my living room and amplified it to a more boho feeling.

velvet couch in a modern living room.

Shop the Look

Add a piece of statement furniture.

When I chose this velvet couch from Kardiel , I wasn’t sure how it would flow with my other decor. I just knew that I loved the look of it and I have been wanting a velvet couch for a couple of years! And what a difference it made!

modern bohemian velvet couch

Even just adding a pop of color with this couch made a huge difference to the feeling of the room.

Since the rest of my decor is fairly neutral, it welcomes a dose of bold color without it feeling overwhelming.

I love the way the clean lines of this tufted sofa modernize the space while giving it that slightly funky boho style.

Incorporate Plants

The boho design style is grounded in lively colors, playful patterns and indoor plants.

Indoor plants in a modern bohemian living room.

I’ve accumulated a few dozen indoor plants over the last few years and they are by far my favorite design element. Statement plants, like this monstera and fiddle leaf fig, are crucial to getting the boho look.

Fiddle leaf fig in a living room.

Of course, adding in smaller plants, including trailing vines , are important too. Plus, the smaller varieties are usually more easy to care for.

Modern bohemian living room design.

Include Playful Patterns

The final element I like to include of modern bohemian design is a playful pattern.

Boho throw pillows.

Many times people think of bohemian design and think that it must be “busy”. However, it is simple to include neutral patterns that add interest without being overwhelming by using throw pillows.

Living room decorated for summer.

Textured fabrics are also a great way to add in that funky element without going overboard.

Summer Design Elements

Now that we’ve covered the basics of what to include for modern bohemian design elements, let’s talk about summer decor!

Bouquet of bright flowers.

I typically remove more decor for summer than adding accent pieces. To me, summer deserves to be carefree and uncluttered.

Entryway designed simply.

Since our entryway is immediately connected to our living room, I always simplify that space for summer first. I removed the spring swag I created from the mirror and added my go-to summer hat to the entryway.

Summer entryway decor.

Next, I added another pop of color with fresh blooms from my quince bush.

Bouquet of quince.

As a Michigander who endures long months of cold, summer is always my favorite and I find so much joy in bringing in fresh blooms from my garden.

It’s free decor and a simple way to amplify a space!

The rest of my living room decor was already fairly season-neutral so I didn’t change much! I’ve really enjoyed the simplicity of this season.

Room Tour: Boho Bedroom

Here’s my boho bedroom that I decorated on a budget.

I had another idea of how I would decorate, and it wasn’t Boho. I had my eye on an expensive bedroom set from Macy’s. It was out of my budget at the time, so I started looking for more affordable items that I liked.

The first thing I bought was the long embroidered pillow from Target’s Opalhouse brand. I love the 3 ladies on it. I had no idea if I would even use it in my bedroom or living room yet. The next thing I bought was the comforter set, also from Opalhouse.

I bought the nightstands from Marshall’s and I intended to paint them white to make them look like a very similar nightstand from West Elm. After I brought them home, I decided I liked them as they are. They’re mango wood and made in India, which must be a trend because I’ve seen a lot of pieces like these lately. I changed the knobs to gold ones from Amazon.

I shop Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Ross, and Burlington a lot and pick up things when I find something that I think will go with the aesthetic of the room.

Even though I wasn’t planning to decorate Boho, I do like that style so it just ended up going in that direction. Especially when I kept the color of the nightstands.

I’m not done and it’s still a work in progress, but this is what I have so far.

Other things I plan to add:

- A small dresser

- Wall lamps above the nightstands

- More artwork

- A small shelf above the big vase

What is Modern Boho Interior Design?

Modern boho interior design is a style that combines elements of bohemian and modern design. The term “bohemian” refers to a lifestyle that values creativity and freedom over conventional rules and norms. Meanwhile, “modern” design is characterized by clean lines, minimalism, and a focus on function. Modern boho interior design takes the best of both worlds, blending carefree bohemianism with the chic sophistication of modern design.

As a result, rooms with a modern boho aesthetic tend to be both stylish and inviting. Common features include floor cushions, eclectically-patterned rugs, and mix-and-match furniture. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of bohemian flair to your space or create an entirely new aesthetic, modern boho interior design is definitely worth considering.

Modern Boho living room with white walls, a white sofa, and a Large colourful rug.

This stunning living room by Erika Carlock epitomizes the boho-chic aesthetic. The focal point of the room is a colourful diamond-patterned rug, which makes the perfect backdrop for the modern white l-shapes sofa and a classic Eames-style chair in brown leather. The room is also filled with large leafy plants, which help to create an inviting and relaxing space. The overall effect is one of stylish comfort and easy elegance. It is both stylish and functional—a great example of modern bohemian interior design done right.

Eclectic Boho Living Room Design

This gorgeous modern boho living room perfectly combines two trending styles: boho and modern glam. The pink and orange walls give the room a warm, inviting feeling, while the marble and gold coffee table add a touch of luxury. The beautiful blush pink sofa is the perfect place to relax, while the eclectic gallery wall adds a unique artistic flair.

Modern Boho Farmhouse Living Room

Modern boho farmhouse living room with a brown leather sofa and a distressed Persian rug.

This design by White Picket Farmhouse is much more toned down when it comes to the palette, with soft greys and browns making this living room feel relaxed and cozy. There are plenty of gorgeous textures in this space, from the beautiful leather sofa to the fringed cushions and lampshade. I also love the distressed rug, which adds a touch of warmth to the colour scheme. The huge leafy banana plant adds a big splash of colour in the corner to complete the look.

How to Design Your Own Modern Boho Living Room

Now that you’ve seen some examples of how gorgeous the modern boho aesthetic can look, I’m going to share some tips on how to create a modern bohemian look in your own home.

1 – Add a Boho-Chic Rug to Your Living Room

boho room tour

A boho-inspired rug is a great way to add color and texture to your space. Look for a rug with bold colors or an interesting pattern. Trellis patterns are great for creating a bohemian-inspired look, as are classic persian style rugs.

2 – Hang a macrame tapestry or woven wall hanging to add interest and dimension

boho room tour

Boho living rooms are all about creating a comfortable and inviting space that reflects your personality. One way to add interest and dimension to your boho living room is to hang a macrame tapestry or woven wall hanging.

These textured pieces add a touch of drama and can be used to bring together different elements in the room. Hanging a tapestry is also a great way to add some privacy if you live in a small space or apartment. Macrame tapestries come in a variety of sizes, so you can find one that fits perfectly in your space.

3 – Use natural materials like jute, bamboo, and wicker

boho room tour

Jute, bamboo, and wicker are often used in bohemian-style homes because they add warmth and texture to a space. Jute is a sturdy natural fiber that can be used for rugs, curtains, and upholstery. It’s also eco-friendly and inexpensive, making it a great option for boho living rooms. Bamboo is another sustainable material that can be used for flooring, furniture, and accents. It’s durable and has a unique grain that adds visual interest to a space.

Wicker is another popular choice for boho living rooms because it’s lightweight and can be easily woven into furniture and accessories. It’s also very affordable, making it a great option for those on a budget. Natural materials like jute, bamboo, and wicker add warmth and texture to a space, making them an essential part of any bohemian-style home.

4 – Add some texture with pillows and throws

A well-designed living room is about more than just furniture. The right accessories can tie the whole room together and give it a sense of style and personality. If you’re looking to create a modern boho living room, you can create a unique look by using a variety of textured pillows and colourful throws. Textured pillows addvisual interest and depth to a couch or armchair, while colorful throws can brighten up any space.

5 – Mix and Match Vintage and Modern

The beauty of modern boho interior design is that you can pair vintage and modern items, and they will work together perfectly. Whether it’s a lovingly upcycled piece of furniture painted in Frenchic Paint , or an antique lamp you found at a local auction, it will be right at home in a boho living room.

6 – Layer Your Lighting

Layering your lighting is an important part of making a living room feel cozy and homely. As a rule, you should have at least four sources of lighting in every room. This can include wall lights, ceiling lights, floor lamps, and table lamps. The key is being able to use them either independently or all together to create the mood you want depending on the time of day and the activity taking place.

7 – Add Some Unique Accessories

boho room tour

Giant Clam Shell

No living room is complete without some eclectic accessories. If you want a relaxed beachy boho look then choosing faux coral and clam shells are a fun option. Bold ceramic vases are also a great choice, and you can select a colour that works with the colour scheme you’ve chosen, whether that’s bright and bold or relaxed neutrals.

Final Thoughts…

The modern boho aesthetic isn’t going to go out of style any time soon. It’s a refreshing change to the grey and white interiors that we’ve been seeing so much of lately. Creating a modern boho look in your own living room is fairly easy, and won’t require any major redecorating. You can simply add colour and texture with textiles, art, and decorative accessories to create this popular look.

The modern bohemian look can work well even with white walls, making it a great option for renters and homeowners alike. I hope you’ve found this article useful, and have been able to take some inspiration to use in your own home! The Beauty Revival Inspired by home and the people in it

Neutral boho living room decor tour, neutral boho living room decor.

Neutral Boho Living Room Decor. Our living room as evolved over the last 2.5 years of living in this house. One thing that always remains the same is my love for bringing in boho decor and mixing it with both modern and farmhouse elements to create a truly unique style.

I will include all my favourite boho living room shopping links at the bottom of this post for everything from pillows to sofas!

Our living room links, similar sectional  |  rug  |  coffee table  |  48″ floating shelves  |  floor lamp  |  similar leather and wood arm chairs, finding your home decor style.

I always encourage others that when it comes to creating your own home decor style, there really is no wrong answer. You need to find what you love and not worry too much about mixing multiple styles together. This works exceptionally well if your style would be classified as boho.

For a long time I felt like my style needed to be either boho, or modern or farmhouse and then one day I decided to just embrace them all.

Creating a boho style in your living room

When I am creating a living room mood board I almost always start with my basics. So rugs , a sofa or sectional and chairs . I tend to lean towards mid century modern for sofas and sectionals, and coffee tables . Next I bring in a boho flair with home decor accents like pillows and decorative pieces.

To mix in a little “farmhouse” I tend to lean towards a European farmhouse rather than a country farmhouse. I will add in an old vintage inspired painting, or vertical ship lap, maybe even a floral wallpaper.

The great thing about boho is you can mix in lots of metals. A black curtain rod and gold light fixture work when going for a bohemian vibe.

Never forget to add in lots of green living things. These can even be faux plants or stems but the green just brings everything to life!

Its all in the details

I love to incorporate open shelving into a boho living room. This gives you the opportunity to showcase your decor, and boho decor is really what makes a room, well, boho.

When it comes to shopping for boho home decor accents I look for lots of patterns textures. Bamboo and woven baskets, Pom Pom and fringe pillows, quirky decor like a polka dot planter or golden turtle weight.

For me personally I almost always stick to neutral pieces. But I mix all the neutrals together. A neutral is anything black, white, cream, tan, natural leather colors, and shades of grey.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

RuPaul Serves Some Confounding Truths in ‘The House of Hidden Meanings’

Chronicling the high-heeled path to drag-queen superstardom, the new memoir also reveals a celebrity infatuated with his sense of a special destiny.

A black-and-white photograph shows RuPaul from the waist up, wearing makeup and a blond wig with a topknot, standing in front of a poster advertising his own performance.

THE HOUSE OF HIDDEN MEANINGS: A Memoir, by RuPaul

As “The House of Hidden Meanings” is RuPaul’s fourth book and his first straightforward memoir, it’s understandably being marketed as an opportunity to see the pop culture icon in a new light. The striking, almost intimidating, black-and-white cover photograph notably subverts the expectation of seeing Ru in glamorous technicolor drag. All the artifice has been stripped away, we’re being told: This is RuPaul stripped bare.

But the meanings laid bare in the text contradict RuPaul’s narration again and again. What’s revealed is a striver high on his own supply who tries to spin his story as empathetic wisdom draped in Instagram-ready captions.

About 70 pages in, RuPaul — at the time, a Black high school dropout driving luxury cars across the country to help a relative flip them for profit — declares without irony, “Americans have always been frontiersmen, people who are open to a new adventure, and I felt this as I drove cars alone, back and forth, across the United States.”

I wearily recalled an earlier section of the book. Explaining the conservative environment of his childhood in San Diego, RuPaul summarizes the Great Migration in a paragraph that would be considered too concise even for a Wikipedia entry, then declares, “All the Black people in our neighborhood were transplants from the South, and so they had inherited a kind of slave mentality, which was based on fear.”

Aside from breathtaking dismissiveness of the decades of racial violence that made the migration necessary, it’s chilling to see a public figure known as a champion of the marginalized so easily dismiss survivors of Jim Crow-era terror as people who “hold onto their victim mentality so fiercely; it becomes a defining feature of their identity.”

The way we tell our stories has a way of telling on us. The memoir reveals an author who thinks he understands outsiders when, really, all he understands is that he wanted to become famous and eventually became famous. And given RuPaul Charles’s truly extraordinary talent, that would be fine if the book (and his brand) weren’t so invested in trying to convince the rest of us that he has unique insight into the joke called life.

Whether your introduction to RuPaul was his 1989 appearance in the “Love Shack” music video , his breakout single “Supermodel (You Better Work)” or, more recently, his Emmy Award-winning run as the executive producer and host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” currently in its 16th season, you know that RuPaul isn’t just famous, glamorous and funny; he’s interesting.

At his best, he has reminded us that “fierce” is a warning, not just a compliment. (I’ll never forget sitting cross-legged in my living room, watching RuPaul onstage at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards, confronting Milton Berle’s anti-gay disrespect in real time while they presented an award together.) And as the self-declared “Queen of Drag, ” an art form and pop phenomenon that remixes identity, music, fashion, comedy and politics into a fantasia that’s wickedly entertaining and often radical, RuPaul has lived a life, honey. Without question.

But living a life and coherently expressing a life story on the page are two very different arts. Rather than patiently allowing his tale to unfold, he struggles not to remind us that everything that has ever happened to him happened for a reason.

Then again, maybe he has a point. When RuPaul’s mother — one of the book’s truly standout characters — was pregnant, a psychic told her that she would have a boy and that he would be famous. As RuPaul writes, “With that in mind, she gave me the name RuPaul because, as she put it, ‘Ain’t another [expletive] alive with a name like that.’ Fame, for me, was less a dream than a predestination.” In other words, “The House of Hidden Meanings” is less a memoir than a prophecy unpacked in reverse.

And so, via a fire hose of anecdotes, minor characters and ready-made wisdom (much of which longtime fans will recognize from TV and other books), “Hidden Meanings” traces RuPaul’s curlicue path from early life in San Diego to the Black Mecca of Atlanta in the late 1970s and ’80s, to the club kid scene in New York and, finally, to the early years of true fame brought into focus by the success of “Supermodel.”

For readers who approach the celebrity memoir as a scavenger hunt, there are some fun finds here. A friend comes back from an Atlanta bar and quotes Lakesha Lucky, a drag queen there, saying, “You’re born naked, and the rest is drag,” during her act. The mantra has since become a RuPaul staple.

Madonna glares at RuPaul one night at the Pyramid Club. Elton John, Crystal LaBeija and Susanne Bartsch make brief appearances. Liza Minnelli drifts through a paragraph and is gone before the paragraph is over.

More than half of the book is set in Atlanta, where RuPaul and a revolving cast of “bohemian scallywags” embraced public-access television, drag bars and dilapidated apartments to create a punk scene. In successfully bringing this world to life, the book allows us to see an outsider embracing his fellow outsiders, by necessity, sure, but also out of deep love.

The most compelling chapter comes at the two-thirds mark, after what looks like a promising start in New York City falls through, and Ru ends up back in his mother’s California home.

Though he spends much of the book on the thin side of poverty, this protracted ordeal is the first time we see the glimmer in his eyes start to flicker. The precarity of this moment is all the more moving because RuPaul hits it big in the next chapter. He just has to hold on a little longer.

With 30 pages left to go, he meets Georges LeBar, the man who eventually becomes his life partner. The search for love is a consistent theme, which makes such a rushed depiction of its turbulent arrival all the more confusing. The moment our author — a triple Scorpio for those of us keeping tabs — actually finds love, he cuts himself off in the middle of the story.

Throughout “The House of Hidden Meanings,” RuPaul doesn’t hesitate to mention that luck was on his side. He nods to the specter of H.I.V./AIDS, the crack epidemic, even his run-ins with the police, then quickly turns back to his once-in-a-generation fortune.

But in this chapter, we’re reminded that the true miracle isn’t that he became famous, but that he survived an era that claimed the lives of countless young gay Black men, many of them just as talented, funny and interesting. Perhaps they are the meaning this country has worked so hard to keep hidden from us.

THE HOUSE OF HIDDEN MEANINGS : A Memoir | By RuPaul | Dey Street | 256 pp. | $29.99
