Staff Review: Mammut Trovat Tour High GTX Boots

Follow Exeter shop manager, Dave as he takes on Mammut’s elite trekking boot and gives his thoughts.

Born in 1862, Mammut has been synonymous with high-performance and quality mountaineering equipment. Established in Switzerland, Mammut has been at the forefront of mountaineering innovation since the 1950’s. With this heritage in the outdoor industry, how well do a company with a background in the mountains, design and create a boot that is suitable for UK conditions? The quick answer is very well!

Nubuck leather, a Gore-tex lining and a Vibram sole could describe one of the hundreds of boots on the market today. So, how is Mammut’s Trovat Tour GTX Boot different to its peers? All Mammut boots are constructed with quality materials. The leather is called Terracare which is taken as a by-product of the meat industry and manufactured with the utmost quality, sustainability, and responsibility in mind. Although there are other waterproof membranes out there, let us be honest, Gore-tex is the one with the best reputation and that’s for good reason. Trovat’s Vibram XS Trek sole is one we certainly trust, and with a PU midsole for cushion, these soles have excellent grip, balanced with durability, along with a generous rand of rubber around the toe and heel. These boots provide great protection for the whole foot against all elements.

I have a size UK11 or EU46 foot and due to a climbing injury earlier in the year I have one foot measuring a C width and the other a D width, so generally narrow. However, if you have a wider foot do not be put off. I am very picky with boots after suffering from blisters, mainly on the heel for as long as I can remember, so I didn’t hold out much hope for the Mammut Trovat Boot. On first inspection, I thought that they would not fit due to appearing to be wide fitting, but due to some key features, they fit from the first outing. These are the “Memo-foam” lining and Mammut’s “Base fit” technology. These increase comfort without restriction, meaning the inner of the boot and ankle meld to the user’s foot, and the Base Fit technology on the lower lacing loops means that as you tension the lace the webbing wraps around the whole circumference of the foot. I found this helps create a really unique fit for each individual foot, or indeed each individual user. The Trovat has a longer lacing pattern which continues further down than many other boots, helping with versatility. Along with an extremely wide opening and long laces, each person can experiment with the right fit for them. This all being said, the best thing is to get into a store to try one on before you buy all out.

Working at Taunton Leisure, being a magpie towards new kit does tend to put one’s bank balance at risk but also provides an opportunity to own many pairs of boots. At the moment, I use Scar p a SL Activs , La Sportiva TX5s and On Cloudrocks . The Mammut Trovat in terms of weight or season is heavy and stiffer than the TX5s but much lighter and more flexible than the SL which has made these my go-to boot for the last 5 months.

On first impression, the Trovat seems to be a marmite boot, some love the look and some hate it, personally, I think it looks great. The first noticeable feature is the chunky heel on the boots which makes them look like beasty mountaineering boots, but at a size UK11 weighing in at under 850g each, this is a reasonable weight and does not feel heavy on the foot. Trying to flex the boot with your hands is tough, it feels really stiff, but that is a real asset for those long days on the hill or multiple days with a heavy pack. It isn’t however, the best for those more relaxed rambles on easier ground. Mammut has cleverly solved this around the Achilles, the nubuck and rubber heel protection stop about two thirds up the boot and are overtaken by memo foam which means that your ankle can flex, reducing the feeling of stiffness but still providing support and protection to both ankle and foot.

As well as using these for daily dog walks and days out on both the SW Coastal path and Dartmoor, after much deliberation, I decided to take these on our recent staff trip along the Affric Kintail way in Scotland. There are lots of points about these boots I like, the fit and feel for me personally were the biggest draw, but I was worried that with so much leather and rubber, the mild Scottish weather in September would be far too warm. This in the middle of a 4-day trek could be an absolute nightmare! To my great surprise, however, the Trovat’s breathability is great. The Gore-tex and flexible fabric panels over the top of the foot not only help the boot fit to a wider foot but significantly improve the breathability of the boot. After 4 days of trekking with a decent-sized pack, at no point did I get a problem with my feet being too hot, even when wearing a liner sock. I did not feel the instant need to wrench my boot off quickly once the tents were pitched.

The other experience I had with the boots was the grip of the sole, at first I was very critical that the Vibram XS Trek sole could feel slippery on hard compact surfaces, potentially feeling like ice skating but I have come to realise this was a little premature. Whether this is the way they are manufactured for protection in transit or not is my guess, but I felt that after a few days of use and giving them some time on the trail, the grip greatly improved. On the last day, descending back into Morvich along smooth well walked rocky stone paths in the very Scottish wet weather, the grip was excellent and I could take each step and commit with confidence.

During the few days in Scotland and testing in the recent terrible weather in Devon, the waterproofing has been great now due to the fabric panel over the top of the foot. When standing in a bog or crossing a river, I felt a few cold spots but once clear of the water, that went away and after a few steps was unnoticeable again. At no point did any water ingress into the boot. Now onto my only negative which has been a positive earlier on in my review. The Memo Foam cuff around the achilles has on one occasion caused the back of my foot to get wet. What I think has happened is due to the fabric soaking up water which had worked its way up and over the top of the ankle cuff, however, to put some context to this it was on a particularly wet night training with Mountain Rescue involving lots of bog and steep hills so my waterproof trousers kept moving up and down a lot, I do not like or wear gaiters. This occasion of a wet heel however has not put me off the boot at all and I have continued to use them since with no dramas.

An area of concern we regularly experience in the stores from customers is how to care for their boots. We find most customers are happy with waxing a traditional brown leather boot but can be put off by a nubuck or synthetic option because they believe it’s harder to care for. It’s worth noting as I did with the review of my Rab Kangri Jacket that all outdoor gear, no matter how expensive needs care and maintenance. In relation to the Mammut Trovat, there are only two things that need to happen to keep your boot in good, waterproof condition. Firstly, cleaning them . Dartmoor soil, where I live, is very acidic and can trash a boot if left dirty for extended periods of time, so a quick walk through a stream or puddle at the end of a walk or a hose and brush at home will do the trick. Secondly, reproofing . Once clean and damp, a simple spray of a Grangers Footwear Repel or Nikwax Nubuck and Suede reproofer every 5-10 uses does a great job of not only reapplying a DWR (durable water repellent) coating back onto the boot but also has a conditioner in it which keeps the nubuck leather supple.

Pros and Cons

  • Great weight to robustness balance
  • Good every day and trekking level of stiffness
  • Breathability
  • Versatile fit
  • Great looking
  • Low fabric on the heel (could be my use)
  • Slippery at first (improved with use)

In summary, the Mammut Trovat Tour High GTX Boots are a classic leather hiking boot with a modern aesthetic twist, suitable for everything the British weather can throw at them. These could be your next boots.

Mammut Trovat Advanced High GTX Hiking Boot Review

mammut trovat tour review

This is one of those hiking items I will shell out on, and encourage you to do the same. Though the Mammut Trovat GTX is pretty far on the high end of price points for backpacking boots, there is something to be said about what your dollar gets you. There are so many conflicting trains of thought with regards to the “best” footwear for hiking and backpacking, and the ongoing battle between traditional boots, lighter trail shoes, and even barefoot shoes rages on. Having tried them all at length, I will tell you that despite the sometimes arduous weight of the backpacking boot, it is by far my favourite option: and of the boots, the Mammut Trovat has taken 1st place!

Mammut Trovat Overview

Product:   Mammut Trovat Advanced GTX Hiking Boot Rating out of 5:  5 Would I buy this again:  YES! Still searching for the nearest sale… Price:  $295 CAD

This is the second pair of hiking boots I’ve owned, so I’ll admit I don’t have a huge sample size. However, after assessing the competition over the years I can’t be happier with my purchase I made 3 years ago. Over thousands of kilometres and every terrain possible, the Mammut Trovat GTX boots have performed. When choosing a boot, here were my requirements:

  • Comfortable, of course
  • Leather/suede, or somehow presentable: I didn’t want these to look like space shoes with neon colours that would attract unnecessary attention or label me as a useless foreigner when walking through cities
  • Over the ankle
  • Gore-Tex (this requirement automatically brings your price range up)

I first went to MEC and spent a long time trying on boots I had already spent so long researching. The best way to truly see which boot is best for you is to try them on and walk around. I eventually landed on the Scarpa Kailash GTX Day Hiking Boots, somewhat reluctantly. They technically had everything I needed, but I wasn’t loving the way they looked and felt (despite being the best option at the time).

Mammut Trovat Advanced GTX in New Zealand

First Impressions: Had to Have These Pillows of Comfort and Icons of Style

Semi-satisfied, I then walked across the street to Europe Bound (which has since closed) to try my luck. As fate would have it, they had a pair of the previous season’s Mammut Trovat GTX boots in my size on sale!! Though on sale they would still cost me $230 – still more than the Scarpa boots – once I had them on my feet it was a done deal. These felt moulded for my feet and were extremely sturdy. Far more supportive and heavy duty than the Scarpa day hikers, they put a spring in my step nonetheless. On top of it all, they were visually everything I’d hoped for in a boot. GREAT.

I walked up and down a while, paid for my final sale boots, and sheepishly walked back across the street to MEC to return the boots I’d bought within the hour.

Mammut Trovat Advanced GTX in Wanaka, New Zealand

  • Gore-Tex tongue and lining, making these essentially waterproof (as I’ll explain, this is both good and bad…)
  • COMFORTABLE, but for my foot – yours is inevitably different
  • Toe cap – for all the jamming and banging in tight spaces!
  • Strap-on crampon compatible (i.e. the sole is stiff enough to be suitable for strap-on crampons, opening a world of possibilities)

Mammut Trovat Advanced GTX on the way to the summit of Mt Armstrong

  • Heavier than the popular Vasque Breeze, as there is no mesh
  • A note on “waterproofness”: no boots or shoes are truly waterproof, no matter what the tag says. If you cross a river, then another, then it rains all day, and then you arrive at a muddy camp, your boots (and feet) will be wet. However, quickly crossing streams on a sunny day in “waterproof” boots will be fine. I was shocked by how waterproof these boots were while crossing streams – everything was going great. Then I was stuck in a 3-day downpour wading through rivers and was reminded that waterproof from the outside in means waterproof from the inside out: once thoroughly soaked, these will take A LONG TIME to dry!
  • This is where mesh has its pro/con: it allows the water to drain from your shoes if the weather gets treacherous, but similarly allows water and rain in even if the weather is mild.

Final Thoughts: Saving up for my Next Pair

I truly can’t wait until I can justify buying a new pair. Mine have taken quite a beating, and are not nearly as waterproof as they once were; mostly due to the fact that one sole is coming off. I’m swayed by my affection for the boots that have taken me everywhere, but these have convinced me that in boots you get what you pay for. Having seen so many before me with awful blister points, broken laces, rusted eyelets, worn soles, and everything in between, sooner than later I’ll suck it up and get myself another pair of the Mammut Trovat GTX boots.

Mammut Trovat Advanced GTX on the way to Mueller Hut

Do you have a pair of hiking boots you are oddly attached to? Or maybe it’s another piece of gear you swear has saved your life? It’s funny how connected we become to the things that let us enjoy being outside! If you need a pack to carry in your boots, I recommend the Terra 65 .

Mammut Trovat Guide High GTX boots

We review the Mammut Trovat Guide High GTX boot, a year round all-leather footwear option for those with rugged terrain on their minds and who want light crampon compatibility too.

mammut trovat guide high gtx m graphite chill gho1 4c

Aimed at 'demanding leisure hikers', the Trovat (we'll dispense with the rest of the clunky name here) is a year-round all-leather boot which can take you from the valley to the scree slopes and onto the ice fields and back again. It makes few compromises to get there as well, so could represent a smart buy for many mountain walkers.

The weight of 780g per boot is fairly standard for full-leather boots, although it didn't feel overwhelmingly nimble on the feet (mainly due to its stiffness, see below). However, when you consider what you're getting for that weight rating, it's easy to forgive: the weather-proofing of a quality leather build combined with a Gore-Tex membrane, the extremely protective all-round rand, a level of stiffness that can carry a crampon, good levels of padding and foam inserts... the list goes on.

The fact that it's B1 rated, which means it can hold the lightest and most flexible kind of crampons, will be enough to sway certain users immediately. And if it's not high on your list of priorities it's nevertheless reassuring if you intend the boot for year-round use and may incidentally come across fields of ice in your travels.

In use the toothy Vibram sole and doubled heel straps, which run below and above your heel bone, as well as nicely judged support to prevent your heel and ankle from rolling or bending outwards, become apparent. The Trovat excels on rough terrain, and the lacing system is also excellent: more than half of the fitting eyes quickly hook on each time you put the boot on. This makes for an effective and comfortable fit every time - never too tight and never too loose.

There is no women's version available, unfortunately, and female buyers will have to console themselves with the slightly less meaty Trovat Advanced High GTX.

In conclusion: a well-built boot which balances year-round performance with high levels of comfort, durability and weather proofing. If you don't need basic crampon compatibility you can opt for something less stiff, but if you do they're a top choice.

Gear review: Mammut Trovat Guide High GTX boots

Recommended Price: £215 Weight: 1.98kg (pair, UK size 12)

Raichle was a well respected manufacturer of rugged mountain boots for many decades, before being absorbed into parent brand Mammut in 2009, but these boots – which still have a Raichle logo on the tongue – show that their tough pedigree has been retained.

The boots are constructed of full grain leather and have a high cut, with a softer Nappa leather on the cuff and tongue. The uppers feel very stiff when new, but do develop a flex after wear. The tough construction is softened with memo foam inside, which I’ve found makes the boots feel very comfortable – after an initial breaking in period. The boots really hug the feet and provide excellent support, which is greatly aided by the very adjustable lacing system. They have a goretex lining and over a four month test including some very wet conditions have not let in any water at all – though I put this down to the tough leather construction and waxing as much as to the lining.

mammut trovat tour review

The Vibram MT Traction II soles have provided good grip on all surfaces, and there is a rubber rand that extends high onto the boot. The boots are billed as three season mountain boots, but there is only a very modest flex in the sole unit – they are rated B1 (strap-on) crampon compatible. I’ve worn them very happily with flexible crampons on slopes that didn’t require front pointing.

I usually take a size 11 but I have pretty wide feet – I’ve found the size 12 in these to be very comfortable for me – which emphasizes once again the need to try boots on in a shop rather than rely on stated sizings.

mammut trovat tour review

These boots are not lightweight and so wouldn’t be my footwear of choice on good trails at the height of summer, but if you are looking for a very tough but comfortable boot that is going to keep your feet dry, cope with a variety of conditions all year round and really last, they are an excellent choice. The price is similar to other boots of this pedigree, and is good value when you consider how many pairs of synthetic boots you would wear out before these finally bite the dust.

Mammut Trovat Guide High GTX Boots Review

mammut trovat tour review

Billed as "mountain hiking boot" for "demanding leisure hikers", Mammut's Trovat Guide High GTX should be all the three-season-plus boot you need. And in a nutshell... it is. I've been wearing them for the past few months through the slow disappearance (then reappearance) of winter, and they've excelled in every area you'd expect them to. If you walk year round and generally prefer rugged boots to nimble approach shoes then this is an excellent footwear choice for most of your adventures on mountain terrain.

Trovat Guide High GTX in the Lakes © Dan Aspel

The Trovat Guide High GTX is the successor to Mammut's very successful (and equally inelegantly-named) Mt Trail XT GTX. Its predecessor proved a good fit for the needs of UK hill walkers, making it a tough act to follow.

So, what are you buying? Well, they carry a breathable, waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, they're stiff enough to be B1 crampon compatible (the more occasional, non-technical end of things - you won't be ice climbing in them), and they have a sturdy and sizeable surrounding rand to protect both themselves and your feet from hard and spiky parts of the landscape. But the real focus here is the level of comfort. The all-leather design means a little more maintenance than a synthetic equivalent but many people would never go back once they've made that choice, and a few minutes with a leather treatment cream after every wash is a small price to pay for what you get in return in terms of comfort, sturdiness and waterproofness.

"If you walk year round and generally prefer rugged boots then this is an excellent footwear choice for most of your adventures on mountain terrain"

The judicious use of "memo foam" filling - as well as a host of other design tweaks given press-friendly labels - has created a boot that hugs and supports the feet, quickly fading from your mind whether you're scrambling with little to no weight on your back, or carrying 10kg+ of camping gear. This is achieved through doubled heel straps which run below and above your heel bone, as well as well-mapped support to prevent your heel and ankle from rolling or bending outwards. In short: it aims to do a lot of the hard work so that your foot muscles don't have to.

The lacing system is also a big sell - with more than half of the fitting eyes being quickly hooked on each time you put the boots on. And this includes a hook on the tongue, aimed at holding it in a central position without fail. This makes for a solid and comfortable fit each time I've worn them - never too tight, never too loose.

"Lightweight they are not. You'll feel the difference dramatically when you slip on a pair of approach shoes or more flexible, less sturdy synthetic boots"

In terms of faults, they're difficult to find. The weight of 780g per boot is fairly standard for three season footwear this robust, but bear in mind that lightweight they are not. You'll feel the difference dramatically when you slip on a pair of approach shoes or more flexible, less sturdy (and probably non-crampon compatible) synthetic boots - either of which will be just as suitable for much of the path and trail walking that British users tend to do in the Lakes, Peak or Dales. Essentially, make sure you need the performance level that these boots offer, which is more akin to a four-season winter boot than a walking shoe, otherwise you may benefit from footwear that's lighter and more agile in the long-run. The heel brake isn't excessively pronounced either - which should mean that steep descents on mud or wet grass are a little more precarious. However, the rest of the toothy vibram sole seems to compensate well and I didn't notice any lack of grip in my testing.

Another downside is that these boots do not come in a women's version. For a female-specific alternative you'll have to look to the slightly less beefy Trovat Advanced High GTX.

Other than that there's very little to nitpick. Mammut gear tends to suffer from high pricing (whether this is because of the relative strength of the Swiss Franc or the premium reputation of the brand, I can't say), but with an RRP of £195 (possibly less if you shop around) the Trovat Guide High GTX is on a par with similar offerings from other manufacturers. For a meaty boot of this pedigree that's not silly money.

Mammut say:

R.I.P. MT Trail XT GTX, Mammut's multi-award winning boot just got better. Taking the crown, with updated features is the new Trovat Guide High GTX.

The Trovat Guide High GTX is great for hiking and backpacking and uses high-quality, flexible 100% leather with all-round protective rubber rand, very adaptive 3D tongue and extremely soft, Nappa leather heel collar. The GORE-TEX Performance Comfort Footwear membrane ensures waterproofing and climate control.

Perfect heel support is provided by the patented Base Fit system, which features a doubled, sliding band and 3-zone lacing. The elastic GORE-TEX tongue construction and memo foam provide additional comfort. The proven Vibram MT Traction II sole ensures stability on all surfaces.

Other features include: Motion Control - prevents the foot from bending over outwards thanks to a reinforced inner side; Rolling Concept - provides support on specific areas of the foot, working to reduce ankle rolling and fatigue. It also reduces the weight of the sole for more comfort; Memo Foam - premium quality foam cushioning with excellent elasticity, used for instep, shin, and ankles; FeetMap - targets zones that sweat, feel the cold and are pressure-sensitive, and locates cushioning, warming, cooling, slip and non-slip lining materials, in all the right places; Board Lasted; Strap-on crampon compatible B1

Mammut Trovat

Gore-Tex C-Knit is aimed at walkers rather than mountaineers and this can be seen in the design of the Trovat Guide HS which has stud-fastened pockets, something I haven’t seen on a top-end Gore-Tex jacket before. It’s the longer than the other jackets, which I like, and it has a good hood that moves with the head and has a big stiff peak. The front drawcords are inside the jacket though which means you have to open the top few inches of the zip to adjust the hood. This looks neater but isn’t as practical as having them on the outside. Carried over from mountaineering jackets are the underarm zips, which are a little stiff to use – probably because the material surrounding them is so soft.

There are six outside pockets, none of them big enough for maps. The zipped pockets lie on top of the stud fastened ones, which means there’s three layers of fabric at these points, which isn’t so good for breathability. Put much in them and they feel very bulky too. I’d rather have fewer larger pockets. The stud-fastened pockets are open-topped and wouldn’t keep out spindrift, another sign that this isn’t a mountaineering jacket. Mammut describes it as for ‘hiking and travelling’.

Given the fabric and features the Trovat Guide HS is quite light. It’s certainly comfortable and functional too. The price is high though. Mammut says it has a ‘regular fit’. The Medium though is smaller than other medium size waterproof jackets tested.

Product Description

Mammut Trovat Tour High GORE-TEX Walking Boots Your trusted companion on technical terrain, offering improved support and better grip with a redesigned Vibram sole. For an optimum sure-footed step on day hikes or multi-day tours carrying a heavy load, the Mammut Trovat Tour High GORE-TEX Walking Boots have it all. GORE-TEX Upper The GORE-TEX upper ensures the Trovat Walking Boots are durably waterproof combined with optimised breathability offering enduring weather protection. Water stays on the outside while perspiration can easily escape from the inside, thanks to their non-insulated construction they are the ideal solution for people who value outstanding climate comfort and heat release. This high-cut boot is designed for hikers and backpackers attempting to stay light on their feet. The upper boasts extreme comfort thanks to the soft Nubuck leather that is enriched with a TPU heel cup for superb durability and protection from unseen trail hazards. The high cuff protects against stones and mud, preventing them from getting inside the boots as well as providing additional ankle support on unpredictable terrains. Furthering the waterproofing on the shoe is the elastic GORE-TEX tongue construction ensuring that water can't get in from the top either, keeping all parts of your feet well protected. Designed with a two-zone lacing system, the Trovat Tour can be adjusted easily on the move making the boot very versatile. This means that the toe, heel and ankle are all tightened with some autonomy. The lacing starts just above the toe cup which is perfect for a technical boot, this then extends up to a locking hook at the top of the forefoot. A reinforced flexible inside prevents you from twisting your ankle whilst maintaining full freedom of movement keeping you protected as well as safe. PU Midsole Mammut have used a PU midsole in the Trovat Walking Boots, providing you with excellent cushioning throughout. They have strategically mapped out the PU in the
