We booked this tour for our exploration to Iceland. We had a great experience with all the managements from airport pick up to the airport drop off. We did not need to stress about anything. Everything was well planned. All the tour guide were really nice. First day we went for northern light hunting with David the Guide. The tour guide, Christian made sure that we get to see the glimpses of this beautiful natural activity by constantly tracking the data from space observatory. I also get to know lot about aurora. Next day, we had one day trip for golden circle with Troll Expedition. Our guide Hinrick make this journey beautiful with his funny joke and good taste of music, and also we get know lot about the region. A special thanks to Hinrick. Finally, we travel for two days to south coast with Nice Travel. We stayed in remote village. It was an amazing experience. The accommodation provided by Guide to Iceland is very nice. First two days we stayed in Strom Hotel and the last night we spent in Hotel Klettur. I really want to thank the staffs of Hotel Klettur who helped me a lot.

The first four days were excellent. However, there was the snowstorm coming. We could not help but give up seeing the waterfalls. Aside from the bad weather, everything was good.

What is a Stopover and how does it work?

Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean Iceland is the perfect hub for many flights going to or from North America or Europe and had been used as one for decades without anyone making true use of the opportunity of visiting Iceland. It wasn’t until a few years back when Iceland’s oldest flight company came up with the “My Stopover” Campaign. With the campaign they started offering longer stopovers, lasting up to a week without any extra cost. This caught on quickly and people loved doing their stopover here on the island in the North squeezing in another country in their travels. Before that time Iceland wasn’t really on anyone’s radar but with more and more people coming in and telling people about this magical place more and more people wanted to visit.

The Stopover is the perfect way to get a 2-in-1 country deal when traveling over the Atlantic and there are so many different ways to do it. Let us talk you through it!

Icelandair offers Stopovers.

A few hours in Iceland

Keflavik Airport is located on the beautiful Reykjanes peninsula, it is only about 20 minutes drive from the   Blue Lagoon   and 40 minutes from Reykjavík. If you are looking to make the most of your travel in Iceland you might want to pre-book an admission ticket to the  Blue Lagoon  in advance as it tends to book up and have your bus ticket ready as well. We offer a  bus option right from the airport to the Blue Lagoon and back  and it goes hourly.

icelandair stopover tours

If you aren’t interested in visiting the Blue Lagoon there are a few good   museums in Keflavík   (the airport town) including The Museum of Rock and Roll and The Viking World Museum.

You could also take the bus down to  Reykjavík   and explore our colorful capital for a few hours. There are numerous restaurants and cafés to be tried and the  church Hallgrímskirkja   is a real city totem, you can purchase a ticket for a small fee to go into its tower and see over the whole city. Other worth mentioning landmarks are the  Harpa Musical Hall ,  Laugavegur   shopping street and  Sólfarið or the Sun Voyager  sculpture down on Sæbraut.

icelandair stopover tours

Other options for a few hours in Reykjavík would be to join a short tour like a  Whale Watching tour  (3 hours) or  a Horse Back Riding Tour  (4 hours).

Staying in Reykjavík – 1 Day Itinerary

24 hours in Reykjavík could be tours within the capital like a  3-hour Whale Watching tour  right from the old harbour or a  kayaking tour in the next fjord, Hvalfjörður .

If you are into arts there are numerous museums to visit including the National Museum, The Whale Museum, The Perlan – Wonders of Iceland, the penis museum or the Safnahúsið e. The culture house. There are fantastic cafés and places to try authentic Icelandic food and if you want to have a guide with you to show you around the  Reykjavík Food Walk  might just be what you are looking for.

icelandair stopover tours

The show  How to become Icelandic in 60 minutes   is a fantastic comedy show in Harpa Musical Hall and  Tjarnarbíó independant  theatre often has shows and stand up in English.

Take a walk , stroll around, get lost. The good thing about the city center is that the incredible and towering Hallgrímskirkja church will always stand out and you can walk to it again to find yourself.

Food Halls , the new it thing in Reykjavík and they are rising up everywhere. Check out Hlemmur Mathöll, Grandi Mathöll or Skeifan Food Court for some finger licking deliciousness.

4+ Days in Iceland | Long Stopovers in Iceland

Anything past 3 days in Iceland will give you the opportunity of really stepping out, driving deep into the outskirts and explore the fjords, the highlands or peninsulas all around the country. 4+ Day Stopover in Iceland Itinerary

Again traveling in Iceland for any period of time will be both season and weather dependent. It is quite important to check the forecast frequently and plan accordingly. That being said…

Traveling in Iceland for more than three days will provide you with the opportunity to really get to know the country, its nature and its charisma. Although you can easily have a wonderful time staying for a short period staying longer will definitely give you the advantage.

If you are looking to leave Reykjavík and really get to know the island there are a few ways around it. First, let us clear up a few things.

  • The  Ring Road cannot be done properly in less than 5 days  and the longer you take the better it is.
  • In  winter   you need to keep in mind to be back well in time for you flight as the weather might close down roads etc.
  • To get the most out of your trip a good self-drive itinerary made by an expert or a guided tour is needed! View our options of  Self-Drive Tours .
  • Even if you aren’t driving  Iceland is no place to sleep in a car , everything around you is gorgeous. Stay awake and enjoy the road trip’s view!
  • Layers Layers Layers are everything when dressing and for stopover travelers, this can mean putting it all on! It’s easier to take off clothing than for it to magically appear.

Now it’s the thing you should/can do:

Exploring the  South Coast  is a trip to remember and best done in a few day. Starting with the  Golden Circle   with the historic Thingvellir National Park, the astonishing Geysir hot springs and powerful Gullfoss waterfall, near are also Kerið Volcanic Crater and Flúðir geo-village home to  the Secret Lagoon  Iceland’s oldest pool, Skálholt church site and Efsti-Dalur Dairy Farm that all are great extra stops to make.

Along the South Coast are  Seljalandsfoss   and  Skógafoss   waterfall which are simply a must-visit while exploring the south coast. Right next to Seljalandsfoss is also the hidden gem  Gljúfrabúi   waterfall hidden in a gorge. Definitely a must while at Seljalandsfoss!

cave in Reynisfjara black sand beach

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach  is another must visit on the South Coast. A volcanic sand beach with strong waves, beautiful basalt columns and sea stacks in the ocean. There is a cave in Reynisfjall mountain that towers above the beach and all of these combined create the most epic scene.

Skaftafell National Park   is home to glaciers and amazing hiking trails. Svartifoss waterfall is found in the park and people gather from all over the world to meet up with a glacier guide to take them on an epic adventure on our  Vatnajökull’s   many glacier tongues.

icelandair stopover tours

Visit the   Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon  where you can go glacier kayaking or take a boat tour in the iceberg-filled lake. Others are into just walking around and taking in the glory but no one should visit the place without a stop at the Diamond Beach.

icelandair stopover tours

If you decide to head West then you will have the  Snæfellsnes peninsula   to great you. This place has often been nicknamed “Iceland in a nutshell” and is one of those places where you will find awe-inspiring landscapes and extreme contrasts.  Snæfellsjökull glacier   stands tall in the center ruling like a king but  Mt. Kirkjufell  would definitely be counted in the royals as well. Then you have the villages of  Arnarstapi   and  Hellnar , the pebble black sand beach of  Djúpalónssandur   and the seal utopia Ytri-Tunga.

You can explore different ways of visiting these places in our stopover packages on this page.

Uncovering the Magic of Iceland with Icelandair’s “Stopover Program”

icelandair stopover tours

When it comes to travel, unique experiences are what I live for. So, when I stumbled upon Icelandair’s “Stopover Program” during a trip to London, it was an offer too tempting to refuse. What followed was an enchanting sojourn that added a beautiful Icelandic chapter to my European tale.

An Icelandic Dream Come to Life

I stepped onto Icelandic soil, and I was instantly charmed by the raw, untouched beauty of the landscapes. The Blue Lagoon beckoned with its therapeutic waters, and a stay at the Retreat Hotel turned out to be more luxurious than I could have imagined. Moss Restaurant served me a gastronomic revelation, while Hotel Húsafell and Hotel Hamar immersed me in the rugged allure of West Iceland.

Yet, it wasn’t just about the breathtaking terrains and luxury stays. Reykjavik, the vibrant Icelandic capital, added a dash of color and culture to my journey, ensuring it was well-rounded.

Icelandair’s Saga Premium: Refined Air Travel

But the enchantment wasn’t just limited to Iceland’s shores. Above the clouds, Icelandair’s Saga Premium made every moment feel exclusive. Gone were the days of mundane airport queues, replaced with swift check-ins and fast-track securities.

Up in the air, my palate was treated to a tantalizing trio of dishes, peppered with delightful Icelandic treats. From Reykjavik Distillery gin to the iconic Gull beer, the beverage selection made sure there wasn’t a dull moment on the flight.

The Saga Lounge at Keflavik airport was more than just a waiting area. It was a serene sanctuary echoing the tranquillity of Iceland, preparing me for the next leg of my journey.

Iceland Awaits: Ideas for Your Stopover

If my journey has inspired you to consider Icelandair’s “Stopover Program”, here are a few must-try experiences:

  • Golden Circle Tour: A perfect blend of geothermal wonders, cascading waterfalls, and historic national parks.
  • Blue Lagoon: Dive into relaxation amidst a surreal lava field backdrop.
  • Reykjavik Sightseeing: Dive deep into the heart of Icelandic culture and architecture.
  • Northern Lights: Witness nature’s most spectacular light show.
  • South Coast Adventure: From cascading waterfalls to mystic black sand beaches, there’s much to explore.

However, remember, Mother Nature can be unpredictable. Ensure you plan your excursions in advance, keeping in mind factors like weather and seasonality.

Final Thoughts

The Icelandair “Stopover Program” isn’t just a layover; it’s a portal into the heart of Iceland, merging two destinations into one memorable journey. For those in pursuit of novel experiences, this program promises a travel narrative unlike any other. It’s the epitome of “killing two birds with one stone”, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every wanderluster out there.

Explore Iceland on a stopover with Icelandair — for no additional airfare cost

Ashley Onadele

Some travelers like to take advantage of a long layover by leaving the airport for a few hours and checking out a new city. But a layover just isn't enough time to really get to know a new place.

That's where stopovers come in.

Unlike a layover that lasts several hours, a stopover could be one day or multiple days. Perhaps most importantly, adding a stopover is your choice — as opposed to a layover that's predetermined by flight schedules. This gives you plenty of time to recharge after a long flight and explore a new destination.

And one of the easiest ways to book a stopover is with Icelandair , Iceland's largest carrier, which offers up to seven-day stopovers when flying from North America to Europe (or vice versa). There's no fee to add these stopovers, though there can be minor tax differences (usually around $10 per person). And the airline even offers tours that you can join.

In fact, if you book a vacation package with Icelandair by Oct. 24, you can snag round-trip flights, three nights in a hotel and four included tours starting from just $949 per person.

The island nation is roughly the size of the state of Ohio, but there's a ton you can do on your stopover. Here are some must-see items to add to your Iceland bucket list.

Explore cities and culture

icelandair stopover tours

Iceland welcomed over 1.7 million visitors in 2022, but there are less than 400,000 full-time residents in the country. The capital city — Reykjavik — has a population of just over 138,000 people, while the next largest city, Kopavogur, has just 40,000 inhabitants.

(For context, Reykjavik's population would make it the 199th largest city in the U.S. according to 2022 census data — just behind New Haven, Connecticut.)

But despite Iceland's humble population numbers, these cities offer tons of great things for visitors to do.

Join a walking tour of Reykjavik

A walking tour is a classic way to learn more about a new destination. While they can last a few hours, you'll walk away with a newfound understanding of (and appreciation for) the history and culture of a place and its people.

Related: How to use hotel points in Iceland

On a walking tour of Reykjavik , you'll visit City Hall, where your local guide will explain Iceland's volcanic and geographical history and significance. You'll also see Althingi, the home of the country's government (and the world's longest-serving parliament). And if you're worried about crowds, don't be — the average group size is just six.

Learn Icelandic history at one of several museums

Museums offer a glimpse into the past as well as artistic expressions of what it means to be Icelandic. Reykjavik and the surrounding areas have dozens of museums to choose from, including the following:

  • National Museum of Iceland : Don't miss the museum's permanent exhibit — "Making of a Nation — Heritage and History in Iceland."
  • Reykjavik Art Museum : Explore Icelandic art through the ages.
  • Icelandic Museum of Rock 'n' Roll : Learn about Icelandic pop and rock music dating back to 1830.
  • Whales of Iceland : Visit the largest whale museum in Europe.
  • Aurora Reykjavik : Check out the Northern Lights Centre, where you can experience an interactive exhibition of the aurora borealis or join a northern lights tour.

Explore Iceland through virtual reality with FlyOver Iceland

If you only have a few hours to spare, consider booking the FlyOver Iceland experience. This attraction takes you on a virtual tour of the island nation. The full-motion seating, coupled with the use of wind, sound and scents, brings the journey to life. The entire experience is about 35 minutes — though be forewarned that it just might inspire you to explore Iceland's sights in real life.

Experience the magic of nature

icelandair stopover tours

No visit to Iceland would be complete without time spent marveling at the country's truly unique landscape. Once you've finished exploring Iceland's cities and museums, get ready for glaciers, whale watching, lagoons and more.

Join a tour of the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is a 190-mile loop in Southern Iceland that includes Reykjavik, Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall.

You can join a Golden Circle tour that takes about 5 1/2 hours and departs early in the morning from your Reykjavik hotel. Or, for those wanting the freedom to explore at your own pace, you could rent a car and take your time driving around the island. Just be sure to know the rules of the road.

Related: 9 common mistakes you don't want to make in Iceland

See the northern lights

The aurora borealis, or the northern lights, is a natural light phenomenon caused by solar wind particles entering the atmosphere. Typically, these are only visible in the night skies of northern regions like Iceland. The country's limited light pollution and long nights in the winter make it one of the best places in the world to see this incredible show with your own eyes.

Icelandair offers a northern lights tour from September through April.

Spot orcas and other whales all year long

Marine-life enthusiasts will love the fact that Iceland is a year-round destination for whale watching. Orcas can usually be seen from March to June and again in the winter months. Meanwhile, in Husavik — a small town on Iceland's northern coast (and one of the best places in the world for whale watching) — you can see humpback whales, minke whales and harbor porpoises.

And if you're unlucky enough to miss out on seeing these magnificent creatures during Icelandair's whale watching tour , you'll get a ticket to join it again on another date.

Relax in a geothermal bath or lagoon

Iceland is known for its baths and lagoons, including the Blue Lagoon in the southwest part of the island. However, there are several of these natural pools that are worth visiting across Iceland:

  • Sky Lagoon : An oceanside geothermal lagoon close to downtown Reykjavik
  • Forest Lagoon: A spa featuring views of one of Iceland's longest fjords
  • Glacial Lagoon : Iceland's most famous lagoon, which includes the chance to take a boat tour and travel around ice from the Jokulsarlon Glacier
  • Secret Lagoon : One of Iceland's least explored lagoons, making it a great option for avoiding crowds
  • Hvammsvik Nature Baths : Eight natural hot springs located just 45 minutes from Reykjavik
  • Fontana Geothermal Baths : Conveniently located on the Golden Circle, with water temperatures naturally between 104 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit.

Join a pre-planned tour

icelandair stopover tours

If crafting your own itinerary seems daunting, Icelandair has you covered with pre-planned vacation packages. Some of the most popular options include the Golden Circle City Break and the Blue Lagoon and Northern Lights packages.

You can even rent a car and travel independently with an Iceland Fly & Drive Package .

And if you book by Oct. 24 , you can snag round-trip flights, three nights in a hotel and four tours starting from just $949.

If you'd rather go at your own pace, remember that Icelandair offers stopovers of up to seven days, so you have plenty of time to explore the country however you like before continuing on to Europe — or returning home to the U.S.

While most layovers are seen as an inconvenience, Icelandair has turned this concept into a brilliant chance for travelers to visit Iceland and enjoy a mini-vacation within their larger journey. Whether you’re traveling from North America to Europe or vice versa, Icelandair gives you the option to stopover in Iceland for anywhere from 1 to 7 days.

During your stopover, you can immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of Iceland. From the cascading waterfalls such as the famous Gullfoss and Skógafoss, to the mesmerizing black sand beaches of Reynisfjara and the otherworldly landscapes of the Golden Circle, there are endless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

One of the most popular attractions in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa renowned for its warm, mineral-rich waters. Taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon is a must during your stopover, offering relaxation and rejuvenation like no other.

But Iceland is not just about its natural wonders. Reykjavik, the capital city, has a vibrant arts and music scene, as well as a thriving culinary scene that showcases unique Icelandic ingredients and flavors. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in some Icelandic cuisine during your stopover.

Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a history buff, or someone who simply wants to immerse themselves in a new and captivating culture, an Icelandair stopover is a fantastic opportunity to do so. It’s a chance to experience the magic of Iceland and create unforgettable memories, all while en route to your final destination.

In the next section, we will explore the benefits of an Icelandair stopover and why it’s worth considering when planning your next trip.

Benefits of an Icelandair Stopover

Choosing an Icelandair stopover comes with several enticing benefits that can enhance your travel experience. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or simply looking for a unique travel opportunity, here are some of the key benefits of including an Icelandair stopover in your itinerary:

Two Destinations for the Price of One

With an Icelandair stopover, you get the chance to visit two incredible destinations for the price of one. Whether you’re flying from North America to Europe or vice versa, the stopover allows you to explore Iceland without incurring any additional airfare costs. It’s an excellent way to make the most of your journey and add an extra layer of excitement to your trip.

Experience Iceland’s Natural Wonders

Iceland is globally renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes. During your stopover, you can witness the power of cascading waterfalls, wander through stunning national parks, explore vast glaciers, and soak in geothermal hot springs. It’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in nature’s grandeur and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Chance to See the Northern Lights

Iceland is one of the best places on Earth to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights. The dark, clear skies and its proximity to the Arctic Circle make it an ideal location for catching a glimpse of this natural phenomenon. Including an Icelandair stopover increases your chances of experiencing the awe-inspiring dance of colors across the night sky.

Explore Reykjavik, the Capital City

Reykjavik, the vibrant capital city of Iceland, is a charming blend of modernity and tradition. During your stopover, you can stroll through the colorful streets, visit museums and art galleries, sample Icelandic cuisine at local restaurants, and even enjoy the city’s buzzing nightlife. Reykjavik offers a unique cultural experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Flexibility in Duration

Unlike traditional layovers, where you’re limited to a few hours in transit, an Icelandair stopover allows you to choose the duration of your stay in Iceland. Whether you’re looking to spend a couple of days or a whole week, you have the flexibility to customize your stopover duration based on your preferences and available time.

From the cost-saving benefits to the opportunity to explore Iceland’s natural wonders and vibrant culture, an Icelandair stopover is an excellent choice for those seeking an unforgettable travel experience. In the next section, we will delve into the step-by-step process of booking an Icelandair stopover.

How to Book an Icelandair Stopover

Booking an Icelandair stopover is a straightforward process that can be done online through the Icelandair website. Follow these step-by-step instructions to secure your stopover and start planning your Icelandic adventure:

Step 1: Visit the Icelandair Website

Start by visiting the official Icelandair website. Navigate to the booking section and choose your departure and destination airports. Enter your travel dates to begin the booking process.

Step 2: Choose the “Stopover” Option

When selecting your flights, make sure to choose the “Stopover” option instead of a regular layover. This will give you the option to extend your stay in Iceland without any additional cost.

Step 3: Select Your Flights

Choose your preferred flights based on your desired departure and arrival times. Keep in mind that the length of your stopover will depend on the layover time of your chosen flights. Take into account the minimum and maximum stopover durations specified by Icelandair.

Step 4: Customize Your Stopover

During the booking process, you will have the option to customize your stopover. Specify the number of days you wish to stay in Iceland, and select your preferred travel class. You can also add extras such as hotel accommodations, transportation, and tours to enhance your stopover experience.

Step 5: Complete the Booking Process

Once you’ve selected your flights and customized your stopover, proceed to the payment and confirmation stage. Provide your personal and payment information, review the details of your itinerary, and finally, confirm your booking.

It’s important to note that the availability of stopovers and the specific terms and conditions may vary depending on the season and the route. Be sure to review all the details, including any restrictions or limitations, before finalizing your booking.

Once your booking is confirmed, you can start planning your activities and accommodations for your stay in Iceland. Take advantage of the resources provided by Icelandair, such as travel guides and recommendations, to make the most of your stopover.

With these simple steps, you’ll be able to book an Icelandair stopover and unlock the wonders of Iceland during your journey. In the next section, we will explore some important considerations to keep in mind when planning your Icelandair stopover.

The first step in booking an Icelandair stopover is to visit the official Icelandair website. This is where you will find all the information and tools you need to plan and book your stopover seamlessly.

When you land on the homepage, you’ll notice various options and menus. Look for the section related to flight bookings or search for flights. Click on it to enter the flight booking portal.

Once you’re on the flight booking portal, you will need to provide some essential information to initiate the search for your flights. This includes your departure airport, destination airport, and your desired travel dates.

Make sure to select the appropriate options for your departure and destination airports. Icelandair operates flights to numerous destinations in Europe and North America, so choose the airports that align with your travel plans.

Next, select the dates for your outward and return journey. It’s important to note that the stopover duration will depend on the layover time of your chosen flights, so make sure to allow enough time for your desired stopover in Iceland.

Once you’ve entered all the required information, click on the “Search” or “Find Flights” button to proceed to the next step.

The website will now display a list of available flights that match your search criteria. Take your time to review the options and select the flights that best fit your travel plans and preferences.

Keep in mind that certain seasons and times of the year may have more or less availability, so it’s always a good idea to be flexible with your travel dates if possible.

Once you’ve chosen your flights, it’s time to move on to the next step of the booking process, where you’ll have the opportunity to customize your stopover and make the most of your time in Iceland.

In the following sections, we will guide you through the remaining steps of booking an Icelandair stopover and provide helpful tips for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

After completing the first step of visiting the Icelandair website and entering your travel details, it’s time to proceed to the next step: choosing the “Stopover” option.

As you review the available flight options, you’ll notice a variety of choices, including direct flights and flights with layovers. To take advantage of an Icelandair stopover, you need to select the flights that include a layover in Iceland.

Look for the specific section on the website or booking portal that allows you to customize your journey. Here, you’ll see a checkbox or dropdown menu labeled “Stopover” or “Add Stopover.” Make sure to tick or select this option to indicate that you want to include a stopover in your itinerary.

By choosing the “Stopover” option, you let Icelandair know that you want to break up your journey and spend time in Iceland without any additional cost. This is what sets your travel experience apart from a regular layover, as you have the freedom to explore and discover the wonders of Iceland during your break.

Once you’ve selected the “Stopover” option, the website will update the flight options accordingly, showing you the layover in Iceland and the duration of the stopover. Make sure to double-check the timing to ensure it aligns with your travel plans and desired stopover duration.

Remember that the length of your stopover will depend on the layover time between your flights. Icelandair offers the flexibility to choose different duration options, ranging from a minimum of 1 day up to a maximum of 7 days.

Take your time to review the flight details and the stopover duration before proceeding to the next step. If everything looks good, you’re ready to move forward with customizing your stopover experience.

In the next section, we will discuss the process of selecting your flights and customizing your stopover to make the most of your time in Iceland.

After choosing the “Stopover” option in the previous step, it’s time to select your flights. This is where you determine the specific departure and arrival times that align with your travel plans and desired stopover duration.

When presented with the flight options on the Icelandair website, take the time to review the details carefully. Look for flights that have layovers in Iceland and ensure that the layover duration matches your desired stopover period.

Consider factors such as the total travel time, departure and arrival times, and any layovers or connections you may have. It’s important to find flights that suit your schedule and allow for a comfortable stopover experience.

Keep in mind that the availability of flights and layover times may vary depending on the season, so it’s a good idea to be flexible with your travel dates if possible. This will increase your chances of finding the most suitable flights for your stopover.

Once you’ve identified the flights that meet your requirements, click on the corresponding option to select them. The website will guide you through the process of confirming your selection, including providing any necessary passenger details and preferences.

During this process, you may also have the opportunity to choose your preferred travel class, such as Economy, Economy Comfort, or Saga Class (Business Class). Select the class that aligns with your comfort preferences and budget.

After selecting your flights and confirming your preferences, the website may prompt you to review your choices and ensure all the details are correct. Take a moment to double-check the flight dates, times, and stopover duration before proceeding to the next step.

Once you are satisfied with your flight selection, follow the prompts on the website to move forward with the booking process. Provide any additional information required, such as passenger details, contact information, and payment details, to finalize your booking.

By carefully selecting your flights and ensuring they align with your travel plans and desired stopover duration, you’re one step closer to embarking on an unforgettable Icelandair stopover adventure.

In the next section, we will explore the process of customizing your stopover and adding extra elements to enhance your experience in Iceland.

Once you have selected your flights for your Icelandair stopover, it’s time to customize your stopover to ensure a personalized and memorable experience in Iceland.

During the booking process, you will have the option to add extra elements to enhance your stopover, such as hotel accommodations, transportation, and tours. Here’s how you can customize your stopover:

Selecting Accommodations

Choose from a variety of accommodation options ranging from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. Consider factors such as location, amenities, and budget when selecting your accommodation. You can book directly through the Icelandair website or explore other accommodation options independently.

Transportation

Decide on your preferred mode of transportation during your stopover. Renting a car allows you the freedom to explore at your own pace, while public transportation or organized tours can provide a hassle-free experience. Consider the activities you want to do and choose the transportation option that best suits your needs.

Day Tours and Activities

Research and book day tours and activities in advance to make the most of your time in Iceland. Whether you want to marvel at the beauty of the Golden Circle, hike on a pristine glacier, or relax in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon, there are numerous tours and activities to choose from. Customize your stopover by selecting the experiences that align with your interests.

Dining Experiences

Iceland is known for its unique and delicious cuisine. Take the opportunity to indulge in local dishes and culinary experiences during your stopover. Consider making reservations at popular restaurants or seek out hidden gems to sample traditional Icelandic fare.

By customizing your stopover based on your preferences and interests, you can ensure that your time in Iceland is truly tailored to you. Take the time to research and plan ahead to make the most of your stopover experience.

As you customize your stopover, keep in mind any time constraints and the duration of your stay. Be mindful of the activities and sights you wish to explore and ensure they can comfortably be accommodated within your chosen stopover period.

Once you have completed the customization process, review your choices to ensure all the details are correct. Double-check your accommodations, transportation arrangements, and any additional activities or tours you have selected.

With your stopover fully customized, you’re just one step away from completing the booking process and confirming your incredible Icelandair stopover.

In the next section, we will discuss some important considerations to keep in mind when planning your Icelandair stopover.

After customizing your Icelandair stopover, it’s time to complete the booking process and finalize your arrangements. Here’s what you need to do:

Enter the required information for all passengers included in the booking. This typically includes full names, contact details, and passport information. Make sure to enter the information accurately to avoid any issues during your journey.

Select Any Additional Services

If you wish to add any extra services such as travel insurance or seat upgrades, now is the time to do so. Take this opportunity to enhance your travel experience or meet any specific requirements you may have.

Enter Payment Details

Provide the necessary payment details to complete your booking. This typically includes credit card information or other accepted forms of payment. Ensure that all information is entered correctly to avoid any payment processing issues.

Once you have reviewed all the details and entered the required information, it’s time to confirm your booking. Follow the prompts on the website to finalize your reservation and receive confirmation of your Icelandair stopover.

After completing the booking process, you should receive a confirmation email containing all the relevant information for your stopover. Make sure to save this email and any booking references provided, as you may need them for future reference or to make changes to your booking if necessary.

With your booking confirmed, you can start preparing for your Icelandair stopover. Make sure to check the specific requirements and guidelines for travel to Iceland, including any visa requirements and COVID-19 related protocols. Stay updated on any travel advisories or restrictions to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Now, all that’s left to do is count down the days until you embark on your Icelandair stopover adventure. Start planning your activities, researching the attractions you want to visit, and getting excited for a truly memorable experience in Iceland.

Important Considerations for Icelandair Stopovers

As you plan your Icelandair stopover, there are several important considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Here are some key factors to consider:

Stopover Duration

Ensure that the duration of your stopover aligns with your travel plans and allows you ample time to explore and experience the best of Iceland. Be mindful of any time constraints and consider the activities and attractions you wish to include during your stay.

Seasonal Availability

Take note that the availability of flights, accommodations, and activities may vary depending on the season. Popular times to visit Iceland include the summer months for mild weather and long daylight hours, and the winter months for the chance to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights. Plan your stopover accordingly to make the most of your chosen season.

Travel Documents

Ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents for your Icelandair stopover. This includes a valid passport with an expiration date that exceeds the duration of your stay, as well as any necessary visas or permits required for entry into Iceland.

COVID-19 Considerations

Stay informed about the latest travel guidelines and restrictions related to COVID-19. Check the requirements for testing, vaccination, and any other health protocols that may be in place during your visit to Iceland. Familiarize yourself with any quarantine or testing requirements for both your outbound and return journey.

Pack Appropriately

Be prepared for the weather conditions in Iceland by packing appropriate clothing and essentials. Depending on the season, you may need layers, waterproof jackets, comfortable footwear, and accessories such as hats and gloves. Research the weather forecast for your travel dates to pack accordingly.

Activities and Attractions

Research and plan the activities and attractions you want to visit during your stopover. Prioritize your must-see sights, book any tours or activities in advance, and allow for some flexibility in your schedule to adjust for weather conditions or unexpected opportunities that may arise.

Local Currency

While credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland, it’s a good idea to have some local currency on hand for small purchases or situations where cards may not be accepted. You can exchange currency at the airport or withdraw cash from ATMs upon arrival in Iceland.

By considering these important factors, you can ensure a well-planned and memorable Icelandair stopover. Take the time to prepare and research thoroughly to make the most of your time in this captivating country.

Multi-Day Tours

Guided small groups, family trips, northern lights packages, self-drive winter, what people are saying.

We don't like to brag about ourselves, so here are some nice things our travellers had to say.

Scott, United Kingdom

Iceland full circle classic - winter, november 2023, we had an amazing time.

We cannot recommend our tour enough. We had an amazing time and have already told friends and family about it. Iceland is an amazing place and I am sure we will be back and will use Nordic Visitor again!

James, United States

Iceland full circle classic, september 2023, experience of a lifetime.

I primarily wanted to use Nordic Visitor as a resource for creating our 14-day trip itinerary, to help weed through what seemed to be an endless array of choices, and to help us to get the very most out of our time in Iceland. Yes, we could have pieced it together ourselves but I needed an advocate in Iceland, an advisor, and maybe a resource for us if issues were to arise. That piece of mind was important to my wife and me and I'm glad we chose them to frame our trip. It made it much easier to piece in the parts that were important to us to see and experience. That allowed us to just enjoy the trip and not get bogged down in the details of planning each and every moment.

There are so many things I could say about our experience, an experience of a lifetime and after posting snippets of our trip on social media I have found that several friends of mine want to know how we planned this trip. I told them the same thing I am saying here, save a little money if you want and plan it yourself or trust a reliable source like Nordic Visitor and let them give you the trip framework and essential advice. I would do it the same way if I were doing it over.

Highlights of the ring road - private, july 2023, went off without a hitch.

Everything was well-organised and went off without a hitch. The private guide was amazing. He could not have been better. I highly recommend him to anyone considering a private guide as an option. He's extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area. He knew all of the best places to go and was entertaining and delightful as well. Accommodation was all spectacular.

Christopher, Australia

Winter highlights - private, november 2023, warm and engaging guide.

Great tour. The sights are of course amazing and the tour made the most of our time, weather and our interests/priorities. Driver and guide David managed all of these very well. He was also very knowledgeable and personally warm and engaging. Could not have asked for more.

Scenic south iceland, august 2023, 5-star experience.

Not only did we absolutely love every stop on the Scenic South Iceland tour, but prior to the tour we stayed for 4 days in Reykjavík. I appreciated Nordic Visitor's recommendations for things to do and places to eat there and felt highly supported by Marko, our travel consultant, in every regard to booking our flight and own hotel, day trips I was interested in, and taking public transport around. A definite 5-star experience!

Winter highlights & northern lights, march 2023, i will certainly travel with nordic visitor again.

I cannot thank Nordic Visitor enough for providing me with a wonderful and memorable once-in-a-lifetime experience. Everything was seamless, from the pickup at the airport, to the excellent hotels, delicious food served and our friendly, knowledgeable guide, Jakob. Nothing was too much trouble - we all thoroughly enjoyed our experience in Iceland, and all came away with wonderful memories of many of the amazing sights of such a scenic country. We were even lucky enough to see the northern lights. I will certainly travel with Nordic Visitor again and would recommend them to anyone thinking about visiting the countries where they offer tours. Thank you Nordic Visitor!

David, Australia

Iceland full circle classic - winter, october 2023, many thanks to nordic visitor.

Absolutely amazing. No issues whatsoever. We saw it all from North to South and much of in between. From reindeer to whales and more beautiful waterfalls and volcanic bits than you could hope to see in a week. Every hour the scenery seemed to change dramatically. Just a great experience. Many thanks to Nordic Visitor.

Robert, United States

Romance around iceland, july 2023, best vacation we have had.

Everyone at Nordic Visitor were very responsive to all questions we had during our 30-year anniversary trip to Iceland. We had airline travel issues and the representative adjusted our itinerary so we were able to see the whole island. The accommodation were beautiful and everyone was so friendly. This was the best vacation we have had, we left Iceland relaxed!

Seth, United States

A new year's to remember, december 2022, an amazing and unique experience.

Our tour was great! Went for our honeymoon and it was everything we wanted. First night we got to see the northern lights which were fantastic! Second day, most certainly our longest, visited several sites (Geysire & Þingvellir) and went snowmobiling on a glacier. Such an amazing and unique experience. The walking tour around Reykjavik was surprisingly educational and our guide pointed out things that we ordinarily would have missed. The NYE dinner was delicious and going out to see the firework displays by (what seemed to be like) everyone was something. Practically had to dodge fireworks! Our 4th day was spent at the Blue Lagoon; perfect after a night of partying! Our last day was nice and relaxing, did some final shopping before we headed off to the airport. Hope to go back & visit Iceland again!

How to turn your next layover into a mini trip

Turn a ho-hum stop into a sightseeing adventure with a layover tour..

If you’re like most travelers, the idea of a layover—spending hours killing time and wandering between tchotchke-filled shops in the airport terminal—doesn’t exactly get you buzzing with anticipation. But you can maximize your time and give your itinerary an unexpected boost by using that time to hit the city you’re in and shop, sightsee, or check out a museum with a layover tour. While they're a great way to extend a trip or check off a bucket list experience, a layover tour does take some careful planning. Below, three travel experts share their tips on how to do it right.

Leave the planning to the pros

While booking your own layover tours and activities can be done, the experts advise booking with a reputable company to save time and prevent stress when you land. Whatever savings a DIY layover tour may provide, the peace of mind of having the details taken care of may be priceless. If you are going to put together your own itinerary, proceed with caution, says Paloma White, founder and CEO of Paloma White Travel . “Only attempt to visit attractions or areas within 30 minutes of the airport and book tickets to attractions ahead to avoid waiting in line.”

Don’t cut it close on time

Allowing enough time between flights is the most essential rule of a layover, tour or no tour. Missing your connecting flight could cause a massive headache, forcing you to rebook flights or adding an unexpected hotel bill to your trip budget. Oluwaseyi Aladeselu, owner of travel agency tmd Escapes , suggests a minimum window of seven hours for a layover tour (depending on the location) to allow for exit, reentry, transportation, your activity of choice, and a bit of buffer time.

Look for airlines that offer layover perks

Icelandair Boeing 757 taxiing to the runway at airport

Similar to port excursions on a cruise ship, some airlines offer layover excursions with transportation included, which may provide more peace of mind when it comes to making your connecting flight. “ Qatar Airlines , Avianca Airlines , and IcelandAir have some amazing programs,” says Aladeselu. “Some are completely free, while others charge a nominal fee or provide a discount code that can cover airport transfers and local tours.”

Consider making a day of it

Depending on where you’re traveling, it may be worth planning an overnight stopover, says Dr. Terika Haynes, owner of Dynamite Travel . “Overnight layovers can be higher in price, but the chance to experience another destination may be worth the extra cost,” she says. “With more time you may be able to book multiple tours or even stay in a hotel in the heart of a city.” A number of airlines offer free stopover programs so you can easily plan an extra night out on the way to or from your destination. Consider Avianca for a stopover in Bogota , Colombia; Ethiopian Airlines for a stopover in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia; or TAP for a stopover in Lisbon or Porto , Portugal, among others.

Double-check your bags and tags

Plan ahead to be sure that your bags and documentation don’t get lost in the shuffle of a multi-stop trip. “Make sure your luggage is checked through to your final destination, and you have boarding passes for your next flight,” says White. “Consider using a small backpack as your carry-on to enhance your mobility and minimize the risk of loss.” And check in with airport personnel to find out what options are available for stowing your luggage, she adds. “Many airports have luggage storage or lockers where you can leave larger bags.”

Below, some of the experts' favorite layover tours around the world.

Swim the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

Relaxing in the Blue Lagoon 's geothermal spa or enjoying bites and cocktails at the adjacent LAVA Restaurant can be the perfect way to unwind after a long-haul flight. “The Blue Lagoon is only 20 minutes from Keflavik Airport, so you can spend your layover in the famous hot springs,” says White. But only tack the adventure onto your itinerary if your stopover is longer than six hours, she warns, since showering and changing can be time-consuming. “Also, make sure to bring a change of clothes and bathing suit in your carry-on!”

Take a hot air balloon ride in Egypt

Aerial view of the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt

You probably won’t be able to see Egypt’s most famous ancient temples and pyramids from your plane window at 30,000 feet, so instead hop on a hot air balloon ride during your layover to see the monuments up close. The Cairo International Airport is about 20 miles away from the Pyramids of Giza, making it a worth-it excursion for those with time. “ Your Egypt Tours offers a hot air balloon ride that’s a great option for those who have at least five hours to spare,” says Aladeselu.

Tour Windsor Castle in England

Witness almost 1,000 years of royal family history with a visit to England’s Windsor Castle , the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. The castle is open Thursday through Monday, and a tour includes access to the Castle Precincts (where the changing of the guard takes place), the opulent State Apartments, and St. George’s Chapel, built in the 14th century. “I’ll often book this tour for travelers during a long layover at Heathrow,” says White. “Most people don’t realize that they are only a 15-minute cab ride from the castle when they land.”

Tour downtown Tokyo

Japan’s capital city has an eye-popping mix of historic temples, towering skyscrapers, and bustling shopping and entertainment districts. In short, there’s plenty to explore during a lengthy stopover at either Narita International Airport or Haneda International Airport, which is a bit closer to downtown Tokyo. “CityUnscripted offers amazing layover tours led by locals,” says Aladeselu. “There is a private four-hour Tokyo tour that’s completely personalized—it’s great for those who don't mind arranging their own airport transfers.”

Check Out Iceland's 'Stopover' Program For A Fun Layover

Those looking for a budget-friendly way to get a taste of Iceland tourism should consider the Icelandair Stopover.

For the solo traveler, or even those traveling with a few friends, looking to make a transatlantic journey, why not consider Icelandair’s ‘Stopover’ program?

Layovers suck, but for the budget-minded traveler , they are often a necessity. Why not try a layover designed to not suck. Taking a flight with a layover can save you hundreds of dollars but adds hours of doing nothing but killing time in an airport. If your goal is to add as many of those little flags as possible to your IG page then you need to take advantage of this program! Take a day, two, or maybe more, to explore Iceland.

Iceland has much to offer as one of the most scenic and naturally stunning countries on earth. Enjoy the seaside city of Reykjavík or escape into nature, with fjord lands, stunning beaches, wildlife, and even the northern lights , an extended stop in Iceland would be impossible to regret.

Explore Reykjavík, a Small Fishing City with Much to Discover

Reykjavík is a small city by the standards of most, though it is clear that this city has much to offer by the number of ex-pats and tourists that flock to its streets. The city is walkable with much of the downtown is accessible by foot in just a day. The city is home to many museums and relics of its Viking past. The city is also home to geothermal hot springs and, being a fishing town, you can be sure it will satisfy the gastro tourist as well.

Museums and Historical Locations

On the eastern side of Tjörnin Lake, you can find the town hall. Here you can find the tourist office useful information and the occasional performance from local artists. On the western side of the lake, you will find the National Museum of Iceland which details the history of settlements, Viking ships and even drinking horns.

the Lutheran church Hallgrímskirkja is another must-see location. Its dramatic architecture is stunning and you go to the top for a scenic view of the surrounding city.

Geothermal Hot Springs

Blue Lagoon is a world-famous geothermal lagoon, a short trip south and west of Reykjavík. It is one of the closest geothermal pools to the city of Reykjavík, but that also leads to it being one of the most popular. However, this also means it is one of the better-catered ones as you can acquire yourself an alcoholic beverage without even exiting the pool.

  • Blue Lagoon - 49.2 km from Reykjavík
  • Sky Lagoon - 7.5 km from Reykjavík
  • Secret Lagoon - 106 km from Reykjavík
  • Reykjadalur Steam Valley - 59.9 km from Reykjavík

Food! For the Gastrotourist!

Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, there is a variety of food options available in Reykjavík. For those who may not want to go too crazy, they may want to consider the famous Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hot dog stand. There are a variety of food trucks around the town square that you can choose from assorted goodies such as chocolate-coated waffles!

101 Reykjavik Street Food offers a local variety from finger-licking fish and chips to soups and stews. Kröns is another restaurant that comes heavily recommended with a variety of bold flavors to choose from.

  • Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hot dog stand - Tryggvagata 1, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland
  • 101 Reykjavik Street Food - Skólavörðustígur 8, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland

Get Out of the City and Enjoy the Last True Wilderness in Europe

Now, you may only have a day or two in Iceland depending on the length of layover you chose, but if you get the opportunity to get out of the city it is recommended that you take advantage of it. Bus tours are reasonably priced , as long as you have the time then it is recommended that you take advantage of them.

Hornstrandir

In the northwest of the Island is Hornstrandir, a claw-like jut of land with glorious fjords and views of both the sea, cliffs, and snow-capped hills. A hike in the glorious region is recommended, but the climate is not what would be described as hospitable, so do prepare properly.

Hálendið or ‘Highlands’

The climate here has assured that it remains an untouched wilderness. It is often referred to as, “Europe’s last true wilderness” and it earns the title. It is home to spectacular views of glacial rivers, ice caps, volcanoes, lava fields, and jagged mountains.

Geysir, the One from which All Others Are Named

This is where you will go if you wish to see the geyser, Strokkur, erupt. You can see the stream of water rise into the air from kilometers off. Though the precise location of the geyser may have shifted due to tectonics, it has remained active for over a thousand years.

The Northern Lights

If you have never seen the Aurora Borealis then why not take advantage of being in Iceland to go catch a glimpse. The best time to see it is between October and March and you can take a boat out from Reykjavík harbor for the best views. Now, you will need to hope that the weather cooperates. But, if you find yourself near Reykjavík harbor on a clear night, don’t miss the chance.

How to Book

As long as you are booking through Icelandair , it is easy to do from their website. You will be given the option to add a ‘stopover’ and you will also be able to select the number of days you wish your ‘stopover’ to last. Transatlantic flights with Icelandair that involve layovers can save you about 400 USD and possibly more when compared to direct flights. So, why wouldn’t you ‘stopover’ in Iceland?

How to Fly to Two Cities for the Price of One

The setup is this: You book a flight to your ultimate Point B with a stop along the way in the big hub of an overseas airline. Great, you’re used to that. But instead of racing to get through the airport in 50 minutes, dragging your carry-on through another security checkpoint, talking yourself out of some $26 fancy chocolates, and wondering if drinking in this foreign airport “counts” as having visited the country (sorry, it doesn’t), you just ... leave. You hail a cab. You book a hotel. And for no extra cost, you kill a day or three or seven before returning for your connecting flight.

In Europe, where far more airlines clamor for your travel dollar, stopovers have become very much a thing . “In days of yore, airlines charged extra for the privilege of stopping over in an intermediary airport, even though it didn’t really cost the airline much to allow the stopover,” says George Hobica, an airline analyst and founder of Airfarewatchdog.com . These days, if you have so much as an extra few hours to fold into a two-destination trip, you should be looking for stopovers.

Look for the option among long-haul carriers. You’ll usually see a stopover option on their website; buy there or via a travel agency. Airlines like Cathay Pacific , Qatar Airways , and Icelandair give travelers anywhere from 24 hours to a week for stopovers at their respective hubs in Hong Kong, Doha, and Reykjavik. Meanwhile, some national airlines will sweeten the pot with deals on travel packages and tours in their home cities. For example, Turkish Airlines offers tour packages for Istanbul and Singapore Airlines gives passengers the option to book a travel package with hotel and ground transportation included.

Even if you’re only sticking around your stopover city for 24 hours, it may make sense to spring for a hotel room, if only to rest your head for a bit. If the airline doesn’t offer some kind of hotel discount or stopover package, you can find last-minute hotel deals on booking apps and sites like Hotel Tonight , JetSetter , and Priceline . Barring that, you’ll find that most major airports around the world offer amenities like free battery charging stations, designated napping areas , and even access to showers. A whirlwind 24-hour stopover is not for the faint of heart, but who wants to throw away a perfectly good vacation day just putzing around the airport?

Or, use a travel booking site to create your own stopover. Even if you’re flying with an airline that doesn’t make it easy to book an extended-stay layover, there are still some online travel tools that will help you DIY a multi-city stay. Travel site Air Wander finds cheap flight deals that include an extended layover, and popular booking sites, like Skyscanner , show you how to book multi-stop trips that could save you some money.

Intrigued? You should be. Here are some of the best cities in the world for a stopover right now.

TAP Portugal

The airline’s stopover program was recently upgraded so you can explore Lisbon or Porto for up to ten days. A week in Portugal is reason enough to get on a plane, especially when the airline also offers a 25 percent discount on domestic flights within the stopover period and an extensive list of partner hotels offering discounts. Lisbon’s the second-closest European capital (after Dublin) to North America's East Coast and makes a natural detour on the way to Europe or Africa.

Icelandair’s stopover program dates back to the 1960s, well before the country was a hot destination for road trips and Game of Thrones shoots. As these innovators of leisure have watched their own popularity grow, they’ve also watched the stopover’s rise. Definitely check these guys out if you’re heading anywhere in northern Europe, and you can get up to seven nights there along your way—legitimately enough time to drive around the entire country.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines has one of the sweetest stopover deals on this list. Stop over in Istanbul on the way to Africa, eastern Europe, or central Asia. Any passenger with a connection time over 20 hours in Istanbul gets a free hotel stay: two nights at a five-star hotel for business class passengers, or a one-night stay at a four-star hotel if you’re flying economy. The application process is a little tricky—you’ll have to send an email 72 hours in advance of your first flight with contact details, reservation code, and accommodation preferences—but the results are totally worth it. See historical landmarks like the Maiden’s Tower and Topkapi Palace, and enjoy some baklava on the way.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines’ new stopover package allows passengers to book a stay in Panama City for up to a week. If you’re popping over for a short stay, you can choose from a number of discounted day tours, like a walk through the Frank Ghery-designed Biomuseo . Or extend your trip and book a more comprehensive package, which includes lodging and transportation. The Aventuras Panamá deal, for example, offers a visit to Chagres National Park, rafting along the river, and a tour of the San Lorenzo Fortress.

Emirates adopted stopovers in 2002, allowing passengers to loiter in Dubai en route to one of the airline’s 150 global destinations. At the time, a mere 16 million travelers passed through the Dubai airport annually. Things have really ballooned since, and it’s become one of the world’s busiest airports . The stopover package offers tours and experiences—like theme parks, desert safaris, and dinner cruises—at exclusive rates.

Japan Airlines

Making it over to Asia is no easy feat, so why not make the most of your trip with a meaningful detour through Japan? When booking with Japan Airlines’ multi-city stopover tool, you can choose to stopover in Japan or Osaka for up to six nights at no extra cost. The airline doesn’t offer any formal stopover package, but with the JAL Japan Explorer Pass , you can access domestic flights within Japan at a discounted rate.

Stopover city: Abu Dhabi

You could probably spend a year in Abu Dhabi's electric swirl of excess, technological marvels, architectural wonders, towering buildings, and azure beaches, and still feel like you haven't seen anything. But one thing you'll seldom get to do is see any of it for free... unless you snag a stopover deal from Etihad. You can either get up to 40 percent off hotels for two to four nights or choose a one or two-night stay at a selected three or four-star hotel, covered by the airline. If you’re only stopping over for 10 to 24 hours, you can take advantage of the Transit connect package, which offers complimentary transportation near the airport.

There’s never been a better time to visit Madrid , home to heavy-hitting museums, 23 Michelin-starred restaurants, new luxury hotels, and, well, vermouth. With Iberia’s Stopover Hola Madrid package, you can spend up to six days in Spain’s capital city and experience a number of perks, like discounted day trips to Toledo or tours of the Royal Palace , as well as a complimentary two-day public transport card.

Star Alliance

Globetrot via Star Alliance, if you’ve got the time and the cash. The carrier group comprises 26 member airlines that fly across 50 global hubs. The Round the World program lets you build an ambitious international itinerary on a single airline ticket. You just have to stop for at least 24 hours in as few as two, or as many as 15, stopover cities. Want more Thrillist? Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
