Tourism Min Kefalogianni at ITB Berlin predicts that 2024 will be another exceptional year for Greek tourism
Greece achieved another key distinction in the Nordic market after similar awards the country won in Norway in January. This time Greece was recognized as the Best Tourist Destination in the world for 2024 (The World’s Best Tourist Country 2024) at the Grand Travel Awards (GTA) in Sweden.
The awards ceremony took place on February 15 in Stockholm with Greece sharing first place with Italy, while Spain, Thailand and Portugal were also nominated in the same category. The Greek prize was received by the deputy head of the Greek embassy in Stockholm Nikos Karalekas and the deputy head of the Greek National Tourism Organization service in Scandinavia Maria Zevgoula.
This is the first time in 30 years that Greece has won this particular award at the GTA in Sweden. The institution has been held for 32 years by the professional website Travel News and is considered the most important annual meeting of the Swedish tourism industry. The winners in all categories of the awards are determined after a survey involving about 400 travel agency executives who evaluate their best suppliers, as well as a representative sample of 4,000 Swedish tourists who have made at least one trip with at least an overnight stay in 2023.
According to the latest arrival data at Greek airports, 544,097 Swedes visited Greece in 2023, who were most satisfied with Greek cuisine and the sense of security they enjoyed in Greece.

This underrated city is Europe’s next emerging destination, according to the World Travel Awards
But it wasn’t the only incredible destination to be recognised
The World Travel Awards are some of the travel industry’s most prestigious accolades, and the winners in the European categories have been crowned at the thirty-first edition of the ceremony in Berlin.
Leaders in tourism, airline, hotel and hospitality sectors are all included in the programme, but it’s the destinations themselves that we’re most excited about.
And claiming the award for Europe’s next emerging destination, a title won by Batumi in Georgia for the last five years, it was Braga , a city not too far from the coast nestled in north-western Portugal .
Braga is characterised by its young student population and bustling nightlife, but also its historical buildings and sites – it’s one of Portugal’s oldest cities, after all. The city has even been dubbed ‘Portuguese Rome’ and there are plenty of dazzling religious landmarks to explore, such as the centuries-old Sanctuary of Sameiro.
Braga beat the likes of Ljubljana in Slovenia, Matera in Italy and Tartu in Estonia in the emerging destination category, but Portugal had a pretty big night overall. Madeira was named as the leading island destination, and the Azores won the leading adventure tourism destination.
The crown of leading destination went to Greece . To learn more about the awards, you can take a look at the full list of winners on the website here .

As part of ongoing efforts to accelerate Greece’s transition to a more sustainable tourism model and towards a digital economy, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) announced at ITB Berlin 2024 this week that it had further strengthened its collaboration with Mastercard.
GNTO Secretary General Dimitris Fragakis and Mastercard Senior Vice President, Public Sector APEMEA, Solveig Hatton reached the agreement which foresees Greece’s participation in the Mastercard Tourism Innovation Hub, an initiative that aims to develop and transform the global tourism industry.
The move comes after previous partnerships with Mastercard and latest at WTM London last year.
“With the GNTO’s participation in Mastercard’s Tourism Innovation Hub, we are taking a decisive step to strengthen innovation in the Greek tourism sector,” said Fragakis, adding that the Mastercard network includes major global destinations and offers Greece a strong advantage in the international environment which is to the benefit of local tourism stakeholders .

Launched in Spain in 2022, Mastercard’s Tourism Innovation Hub facilitates collaboration and innovation across the private and public sector through partnerships, technologies, data and expertise to create a more inclusive and sustainable tourism sector to meet the needs of all stakeholders – governments, small businesses, local communities and travelers.
Commenting after the signing of the agreement, Hatton underlined the importance of partnerships between private and public sectors, which she said are “essential to driving innovation”.
“We are delighted to welcome the GNTO as a member of the Tourism Innovation Hub and look forward to leveraging our technological excellence and Mastercard’s data insights to support the GNTO’s work to shape a more sustainable and inclusive tourism industry,” said Hatton.
