wrong default location in Safari

After I reset Safari, certain web sites (such as weather.com) assume that I am in another town in NJ. I can change that on the weather.com site but after a reset I again get the wrong town. How to fix this? Thanks.

If you don't reset Safari does it work properly?

Oct 31, 2014 8:15 AM in response to Eric Root

Works the same before and after I reset Safari.

Where does Safari get the location?

Oct 31, 2014 8:53 AM in response to owenfromnj

System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy - see if Safari is checked there.

Nov 3, 2014 10:46 AM in response to Eric Root

In System Preferences>Security&Privacy there were no apps listed, but I clicked Accessibility and got SpectraView II (the only time now in the list), which I have left unchecked. How do I remove SpectraView II from list? Still have wrong default location in Safari. Thanks.

This problem also occurs with Firefox.

Apparently both Safari and Firefox go to the same place to get this location.

How to stop Safari asking for your location

Karen Haslam

Browsing the web can be a frustrating experience these days, with pop-ups asking you for permission for websites to use data about you, including your location. There’s not much you can do about the frequency of the privacy pop-ups relating to cookies as these are required by law, but you can at least stop Safari from asking if it can use your location data. We’ll show you how below.

Beware though, one of the disadvantages of stopping Safari from asking for permission can be that your Google searches will get stuck in whatever location you were when you changed this setting. So, if you are wondering why your Safari location is wrong, or how you can reset your Safari location to make searches more relevant, we’ll answer that too.

Why does Safari ask for my location?

Before we tell you how to stop Safari asking for your location you might want to know exactly why it does so, because that may affect your choice when it comes to turning it on or off.

Most frequently you are likely to see the request when you search for something in Google. If you are just searching for the latest Apple news your location may not matter so much (although it could give preferential treatment to websites based in the same country as you).

However, if you are searching for local information, such as restaurant reviews, whether schools near you are closed, or opening hours for your local Tesco, for example, then having the search be specific to you can be a good thing.

Why does Safari ask for your permission though? That’s a privacy feature added by Apple to ensure that you can determine whether information about you is made available to Google, and other websites, and that you are aware if this information is requested.

If you don’t want websites to have your data, which can be used to target you with advertising, or even show alternative prices to you, you can use privacy settings in iOS and macOS to make sure that your data isn’t shared. We explain how to surf the web privately here.

Safari Google Location Data

How to stop Safari asking for location on iPhone/iPad

If you are fed up with Safari asking you to confirm your location on your iPhone every time you search in Google, or when you visit some sites, here’s what to do:

If you want Safari to stop bugging you do this:

  • Open Settings on your iOS device.
  • Scroll down to Privacy.
  • Tap on Location Services.
  • Scroll to Safari Websites.
  • Tap on Never.

Safari location services iPhone

Note that Safari will still use the location data that’s in its memory the next time you perform a search though. So, if you then change location and want to make your searches more relevant you may want to look at the section below about changing your location .

How to stop sharing your location data

One way to search without sharing your location data, or to search with different location data is to use DuckDuckGo.

  • Go to DuckDuckGo.com .
  • Perform your search.

Use DuckDuckGo

Note results will still be based on your country location – but if you want to change that you can, here’s how:

  • Tap on the drop down menu beside regional information at the top (in our case it says United Kingdom).
  • Choose a different region.

This should return results based on the country selected (when we changed it to the US though the map at the top of the page inexplicably showed Coventry).

The only way to completely stop using your location when searching is to use a VPN. Read about the best VPNs for iPhone here .

How to change your location in Safari

If you have stopped Safari asking you to confirm your location you may find that Google searches get stuck in the location you were previously in. Here’s how to change the location to the one you are in now.

  • Open Safari on your phone and go to Google.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page you will see details of your last location, or it will say Unknown.
  • If you search now you will find that the search results are linked to the location that is stored in your search history.

Use precise location iphone

  • If it says “Location Unavailable” head back to Settings > Privacy > Location Services
  • Find Safari Websites again and switch to When Using the App.
  • Now search once more and agree to share your Location Data.
  • Now that your location is switched to the one you are in you can go back to Location Services and switch Safari Websites back to Never.

How to search the web privately

If you want to browse incognito then you could open a Private window in Safari, here’s how to do that:

  • Tap on the two squares in the bottom right.
  • Tap on Private.
  • Tap on the +.
  • Enter your search in the new window, which will be darker than usual.

However, Safari is still going to base the search on a recent location though.

There are alternatives to Safari on iOS that can allow you to browse the web privately, such as Firefox Focus which is a privacy browser with tracking protection and content blocking.

How to stop Safari asking for Location Data on a Mac

On desktop macOS Safari, you can have the browser remember your preference for up to one day, but this still might prove frustrating if you frequently see the message.

If you want to stop Safari using your Location Date follow these steps:

  • Open Safari.
  • Choose Preferences from the Safari menu.
  • Click on Websites.
  • Click on Location.
  • You can set this on a per website basis, or you can change the setting for all websites. You have the choice of Ask, Deny or Allow. Choose Deny if you don’t want your location data to be accessed.
  • Alternatively, if you are ok with the data being used, but don’t want to be asked, choose: Allow.

iOS 15 Safari: How to change the address/search bar design on iPhone

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Apple’s latest iOS release comes with an all-new Safari design that places the address/search bar at the bottom of the screen by default. But you can switch back to the classic iOS Safari design with a top bar. Here’s how to change the iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone.

Apple made its way through multiple iterations of the new iOS 15 Safari design and with the sixth beta , it included the option to switch between the bottom address/search bar and the classic iOS Safari top address/search bar on iPhone .

The official iOS 15 public release also includes the classic bottom menu bar instead of packing all of Safari’s buttons into the unified address/search/tab bar.

How to change iOS 15 Safari address/search bar on iPhone

  • Running iOS 15, open Safari on your iPhone
  • In the bottom address/search bar, tap the “aA” icon on the left (when on a website)
  • Tap Show Top Address Bar
  • Tap the “aA” icon in the top address/search bar
  • Choose Show Bottom Tab Bar

Alternatively, you can also change the iOS 15 address/search bar by heading to the Settings app > Safari > swipe down and choose “Single Tab.”

Here’s how it looks to change the Safari address/search bar on iPhone:

Site default logo image

And here’s how it looks to change it back to the bottom address/search bar:

The other way to change the address/search bar design is in the Settings app.

In addition to changing between the bottom and classic top address/search bar designs, you can choose to enable/disable website tinting (matches the top iPhone status bar to websites’ colors) and enable/disable the landscape tab bar.

How to change download location for Safari on your iPhone

Amber Neely's Avatar

If you've ever downloaded anything on your iPhone, you may have had trouble finding it later. After all, it's not immediately clear where these files go.

By default, you'll save anything you download to the Downloads folder of iCloud Drive. You may not want it there, given that it uploads to your iCloud drive, and takes up space there too.

Changing the download location elsewhere is possible. Here's how to do it.

Selecting a download location

How to change the download location for Safari on your iPhone

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down and tap Safari
  • Scroll down and tap Downloads
  • Select either iCloud Drive , On my iPhone , or Other...

If you select iCloud Drive or On my iPhone, you will automatically download files to the respective Downloads folder.

Should you select "Other...", you will be prompted to navigate to the location either on iCloud Drive or your iPhone where you would like to download files.

With Safari open, click the "Safari" menu and then click "Preferences."

On the General tab of the preferences window, click the "File download location" drop-down menu and then click "Other."

Network Service 101

How to turn on location services.

You’re on your MacBook Pro and out of things to watch on Netflix — how do you access another country’s library? Or maybe you’re at home and need to access your work network without going into the office. Whatever your reason, we’re telling you how to change your location on a Mac, step by step.

The Tools You’ll Need To Change Location On Mac

In most (but not all) instances, changing location on a Mac means changing your IP address. However, changing your Mac’s IP address to another address on your local network won’t do much. You’ll need a VPN to change the location tied to your Mac’s IP address. The top VPNs we’ve tested, such as the ones below, will let you choose from hundreds of different IP locations.

change location safari

First, figure out exactly what you mean when you say “location” — the network location or the IP address. Let’s differentiate the two.

What Is a Network Location?

A network location is a group of settings for a network port, which could be a modem, a wireless network, or an Ethernet network. All Macs come with network locations automatically, but Apple lets users join multiple locations at once, switching between them as needed.

If you want to change your network location, follow these steps on your Mac:

How To Change Your Network Location on a Mac

  • Choose Apple Menu from your screen.
  • Open System Settings, your Mac’s network preferences app that has the location menu item.
  • Click “Network.”
  • Open the dropdown menu to switch locations. To the right of “Location,” choose “Edit Locations.”
  • Click “Add.”
  • Type in the name of the new location.
  • Click “Done.”
  • Click “Apply” for the location feature to change.

What Is an IP Address?

In contrast, an IP address is your Mac’s identifying number that’s associated with the computer and its automatic network. We like to think of IP addresses like the numbers on houses, along with their street names, towns, and ZIP codes. Each device comes with its own unique IP address, which lets computers send information to each other and track users’ locations.

Streaming services often use devices’ IP addresses to determine their locations, which then determines what library the user can access. That’s why we use VPNs to hide our IP addresses .

How To Change Your IP Address

To change your IP address with a VPN:

  • Sign up for a VPN on your Mac, your router, or even your browser if you prefer. If you’re not sure which one you want, first check out our lists of the best Mac VPNs and the best Chrome VPNs .
  • Download the VPN app.
  • Select the location of your choosing and connect to a nearby server.
  • Verify that your IP address has changed.

For more information on how to set up a VPN , look at our specific pages on how to set up a router VPN or how to set up a Mac VPN .

Note: Firefox has its own VPN, which we tested in our Mozilla VPN review . However, you don’t have to use this VPN on Firefox if you don’t want to, as other VPNs work on the browser. Learn more about Mozilla VPN and its costs .

How Do Websites Track Your Geolocation?

We’ve all heard about how we’re followed around on the internet, but how exactly do websites know where we are? These are a few of the different methods:

  • IP addresses: While IP addresses aren’t exact, unmoving locations, they can show what geographic area the user is in. This is the least accurate method of geolocation.
  • GPS: GPS, or the Global Positioning System, is made possible with satellites that orbit Earth.
  • Wi-Fi positioning system: Websites can gain location data from your Wi-Fi network.
  • Cell tower trilateration: Websites can also get your geolocation data from the cellular towers you connect to on your smartphone.

FYI: Cellular towers are legally required in order for the police to report approximate locations for 911 calls. So, if a smartphone doesn’t have GPS information, emergency services can use cellular networks instead. 1

Now let’s go back to those network locations we mentioned earlier. You can do a lot with them: change them, prevent services from being used, remove locations completely, rename them, or copy them. Think of it like a Bop It for your computer’s network.

How To Change the Network Service Order

  • Open the Apple menu.
  • Open System Settings.
  • In the dropdown menu to the right of “Location,” click on the location you want to change.
  • Click the “More Options” button, which has three dots.
  • Click “Set Service Order.”
  • Drag the services into the order you like.
  • Click “OK.”
  • Click “Apply.”

How To Prevent a Network Service From Being Used

  • In the dropdown menu to the right of “Location,” choose the location you want to change.
  • Click “More Options.”
  • Click “Make Service Inactive.”
  • Click “Apply.” 2

How To Remove a Network Location

  • In the dropdown menu to the right of “Location,” click “Edit Locations.”
  • Choose the location you want to remove.
  • Click “Remove.”

How To Rename a Network Location

  • Choose the location you want to rename.
  • Enter a new name.

How To Copy a Network Location

  • Choose the location you want to copy.
  • Click the Action pop-up menu.
  • Click “Duplicate Location.”
  • Enter a new name for the location.
  • Click “Apply.” 3

Many apps, from dating apps to e-commerce, make users turn on their location services. If you’re not sure how to do that, keep reading:

  • Click “Security & Privacy.”
  • Click “Privacy.”
  • Click on the lock to unlock the preference pane.
  • Click “Location Services.”
  • Click “Enable Location Services.” Now, your Mac will start sharing your location.

That’s it for how to change your Mac location, but your MacBook probably isn’t the only device you have. So, we’ve compiled guides on how to change your PC location , and how to change your iPhone/iPad location . You’ll be changing your Netflix region in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions

For more information on how to change your Mac location, we’ve answered the questions we get the most often.

To set your location on a Mac:

  • Open the System Settings app.
  • Choose “Security & Privacy.”
  • If it’s locked, click the lock to unlock it.
  • Choose “Location Services.”
  • Choose “Enable Location Services.”

You can’t change your GPS location on a Mac because Macs don’t have GPS trackers. Rather, Macs determine users’ locations via their IP addresses or Wi-Fi networks, so to change your IP address, use a VPN.

To change your location on Safari on a Mac:

  • Unlock the lock by clicking on it if necessary.
  • Scroll to Safari.
  • Check off the app to enable Location Services.

Your Mac location may be wrong because you’re using a VPN or because you’re connecting to a different network location. You may have also disabled Location Services.

How to Change the Download Location for Safari on Your iPhone

Are Safari downloads taking up all your iCloud storage? Follow these steps to save downloads to your iPhone instead.

All Safari Downloads on your iPhone go to the dedicated Downloads folder in the Files app. However, did you know that you can change the download location for Safari on your iPhone?

This article details a simple way of changing where Apple's Safari browser stores your iPhone downloads.

Why Do You Need to Change the Download Location in Safari?

Before jumping into the "how" to change the download location, you may need some convincing as to "why." The primary reason you might need to change the download location in Safari is to save storage on iCloud.

If you open the Files app, you'll realize the Downloads folder is under iCloud Drive and not On My iPhone . So whatever file you download, your iPhone will instantly upload it to your iCloud storage. That will easily gobble up your iCloud storage, especially if you're on the free 5GB plan. Sooner rather than later, you'll have to pay to upgrade your iCloud storage .

Another reason to change download location might be out of preference. Or, perhaps, because you have more than enough storage on your iPhone.

How to Change the Download Location in Safari on iPhone

Follow these steps to change the default download location in Safari on your iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and select Safari from the application list.
  • Under General , select Downloads . This will take you to the Store Downloaded Files On: page, where you can change your download preferences.
  • Tap On My iPhone to change your download location. Safari will now store downloads in a local Downloads folder.
  • If you wish to select another folder on your iPhone, tap Other and select your folder of choice, then tap Done .

Safari will immediately start storing new files in your custom folder, but it won't move any existing downloads.

Store Safari Downloads in Your Folder of Choice

By default, Safari stores downloads in iCloud Drive. But it doesn't have to be so, especially if you don't plan to start paying for additional storage. Just follow the steps above and change your download folder.

If your iCloud storage has already taken a hit due to downloads, we have some tips on how to free up space.
