Our Catamaran

Prince of Whales operates two custom-built catamarans for whale watching tours. The Salish Sea Dream and The Salish Sea Eclipse. Both vessels are designed to be environmentally friendly, comfortable and fast.

The catamarans are designed to minimize their impact on the marine environment and wildlife. They use low-emission engines, hydrofoil technology, and advanced hull design to reduce fuel consumption and noise pollution. They also follow strict guidelines for responsible whale watching practices, such as keeping a safe distance from the whales, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction, and limiting their time with each group of whales.

Certificate of Excellence Since 2009

Prepare for Adventure

It gets cold out on the water (trust us!), so we recommend  windbreaker jackets, sweaters, long pants, and closed-toe shoes . It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a tight-fitting hat, a camera to capture some memorable moments and, above all, your sense of adventure!

celebration of lights vancouver cruise

Do tours run in all types of weather?

Tours operate rain or shine! Safety is our priority and, in extreme weather conditions or high winds, adventures may be cancelled at the discretion of our qualified crew. We will be in touch should this be the case.

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

The boat we use for this tour is equipped with two airline-style washrooms.

Do passengers often feel seasick?

No, our boats are custom-built for whale watching with passengers in mind. Captain and crew will also do their best to minimize the impact of the sea. However, if you are prone to seasickness, we recommend you purchase non-drowsy Gravol from a pharmacy prior to your adventure with us.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Reservations are definitely recommended. Adventures often sell out and we don’t want you to be disappointed.

The Celebration of Light is arguably the highlight of the summer in Vancouver. It is a long-standing tradition that Vancouver has embraced for the last 29 year. It began as the Symphony of Fire and eventually became the Honda Celebration of Light - a three-night event over the course of a week in which three countries are selected to compete in a spectacular fireworks display! These beautiful displays of lights are always accompanied with music that is reflective of the country, and the fireworks are timed to the music. Combining these two senses has led to a magnificent viewing that has dazzled Vancouverites and visitors year after year.

Due to the popularity of the event every night with a show people flock to Vancouver's beaches, but really the best way to appreciate the fireworks is from the water. This way you can enjoy the full show drink in hand with the and the fireworks reflecting off the water and the city skyline as the back drop after enjoying a delectable meal all the while avoiding the crowds.

Magic Yacht Charters and our four impressive vessels always cruise on these special nights and our vessels offer the perfect venue for any guest list.

  • aprilsN4382VF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A wonderful time on the water! The beautiful humpback and orca whales came into our view, and it was incredible! We had an array of sightings with also porpoises, harbor seals and stellar views of Howe Sound and the chain of islands on a beautiful sunny day in Vancouver. I enjoyed the crew and think they were informative and helpful in identifying the sea life during the trip however questioned their capacity and/or enjoyment for children. I do think that a trip like this would need kids to be in their teen years unless the child(ren) have a passion for sea life or the sea to stay engaged; and/or bring activity books to engage them for the spaces of time in between, if needed. I can say that I found the tour information regarding Howe Sound interesting however it would be far removed from young ears. In this, I truly am grateful and thank you for a memorable experience. • Mikesugarsugar 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Always wanted to, but never had the chance until now The whole experience was wonderful. The crew was helpful and informative. There are naturalists try to answer your questions. The day was gloomy with a lot of rain and wind, but that wasn’t going to stop us. The greatest was when the first whale came up. Wow! We enjoyed seeing the Humpback whales, sea lions, eagles and even goats (don’t ask). At the end of our day heading back we encountered a pod of Orcas close to the harbor and even the most experienced naturalist was mesmerized. What an incredible experience. We went on the last day of the season (11/6/2023) and were lucky to see all the whales we saw. If you do go expect to spend five hours in the boat. It did rock some, so be weary of sea sickness and take appropriate measures. Loved everything. Thank you crew and Prince of Whales… sorry for the poor photos, but I was too busy watching the whales. Every member of staff was dressed in uniform and were very knowledgeable about whales . We had Jill who talked to us and showed us photos of whales fins and tails and names of whales ..how amazing . Jill also explained the nature of whales and behaviour. We saw whales from a distant and some really close ..really felt good ..actually felt very lucky . The boat was not over-crowded, plenty of seating and spots to view the whales from. The crew was engaging, fun and knowledgeable, and the captain got us close to the animals without disturbing them. When they shut off the engines humpback whales came right up and stayed around the boat, surfacing and diving for quite awhile! Thank you Anthony, Wilma, Roman, Jill and Stephen! • homerh414 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Whale Watching Tour We went on the whale watching tour at the beginning of November, which was near the end of the season and we couldn't have been more happy with the crew and the sightings we had on the tour. Wilma and Stephen were very informative and had exceptional knowledge on all sightings and answered all questions asked by the guests, which made the trip even better. Our Captain Anthony was great and found us Orcas, Humpbacks, Sea Lions, Seals, Bald Eagles and even an 800 year old Pictogram left by the indigenous people of the area. I don't think the trip could have been any better. The pictures that the on board photographer Sandy took of our tour were second to none and will give us a lifetime of memories. I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting a great experience. Read more Written November 6, 2023
  • Ruislip 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An Amazing Experience I booked this at the last minute and boy am I pleased I did. The boat was comfortable and we were advised where best to sit which was great. Wilma our guide was so well informed making the experience even better. The highlight was obviously seeing the 2 pods of Killer Whales racing each other through the surf for about an hour and then on the way back we got a glimpse of a humpback whale. It can get chilly on the boat so bring layers although the free hot chocolate was most welcome. Also there is a photographer on board who shares his photos at the end of the trip ( which was a blessing as they were far superior to mine) If visiting Vancouver Definitely put this on your to do list. When we arrived the whole process was very systematic and what was expected on the day was explained clearly to us all . We were given time to ask questions throughout our trip . Unlimited teas coffees and hot chocolate served by the lovely staff too . I would highly recommend prince of Whales to anyone . Thankyou to the staff and the wonderful Whales for making this a memorable experience. Read more Written November 6, 2023

  • A5674WDdaniellew 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing Whale Watching Adventure! We had an incredible time on our Prince of Whales tour during the last few days of the season! Would recommend Prince of Whales to everyone! Read more Written November 6, 2023
Vancouver’s Honda Celebration of Light returns to English Bay again this summer, with a century-old fireworks company from Down Under and two relative upstarts ready to strut their pyrotechnical wizardry during the three-day fireworks’ competition.

Organizers announced their lineup for the 2023 event on Monday. Australia, Mexico and first-timer Philippines are set to dazzle the 400,000-strong crowds that flock to English Bay and surrounding beaches each night of the popular summer festival.

Executive producer Paul Runnels says since BrandLive took over producing the show in 2010, it’s been on a mission to expand the participating countries beyond the usual suspects.

“We did a self-imposed mandate to spread it around a little bit more,” said Runnels. “It was about trying to bring in new and different teams and mix-it-up a bit more.”

The move helped invigorate communities who may not have attended the fireworks in any significant numbers in the past. When Team India competed in 2019, for example, turnout from Metro Vancouver’s South Asian community was “absolutely insane,” said Runnels.

And as the fireworks’ competition expanded beyond the nighttime shows to include daytime programming such as live entertainers and food trucks, organizers have reached out to consulates and tourism associations of participating countries to invite them to showcase their music, food and culture.

Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion.

Plus, new competitors could bring fresh, new styles to the show — “their secret sauce,” said Runnels.

The result: A more compelling show with a narrative, something that’s more creative and thoughtful than just watching stuff get blown-up in the air.

Organizers work from a list of interested applicants; occasionally, they invite companies to participate. They pay for their flights, accommodations and expenses, and are given a fixed budget to put on their show to ensure an equal playing field among the contenders.

Up for grabs: Bragging rights to one of the most prestigious fireworks events in the world.

“The Honda Celebration of Light is on par with some of the biggest and best pyrotechnical events in the world,” said Runnels. “The setting is spectacular. They want to come to Vancouver and love to perform in this incredible setting.”

Meet the teams:

Saturday, July 22: Australia

Howard & Sons Pyrotechnics represent the land Down Under to open-up the celebration. The fireworks’ pioneers started with a show in 1932 to mark the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and did the same for the famous Opera House in 1973. Howard & Sons took silver in the 2016 Celebration of Light.

Wednesday, July 26: Mexico

Grupo Avacon is a pyrotechnic creator that began in 2009 and have done shows for big contests and festivals in Mexico and around the world. The group also does performances nearly every day of the year for hotels and companies in its home country.

Saturday, July 29: The Philippines

Blue Peacock Fireworks is the new kid on the block, said Runnels. But the relative newcomer has garnered plenty of positive reviews. It was responsible for a fireworks show celebrating the 100th anniversary of independence in the Philippines and developed a pyro-musical show using the 213-foot SkyRanch Eye, the country’s tallest ferris wheel.

The fireworks begin at 10 p.m. each day and are set-off from barges in English Bay. A simulcast of music is available on CFMI Rock 101. The winner will be announced on Aug. 2.

And there’s plenty of activity before the flashy finale, including the return of the Red Bull Air Show, and musical entertainment.

The celebration is put on by the volunteer Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society and is produced by BrandLive Management Group in collaboration with Archangel Fireworks Inc.
