The hilly landscape with its olive groves, grapevines and cypress avenues is made for a road trip. From one city to the next, you drive along picturesque routes that are at least as beautiful as the hubs themselves. Start in Tuscany's capital, historic Florence, where you can comfortably spend two to three days exploring its famous sights. The first stop on the trip is Lucca, a delightful city with medieval charm. From here, within a good half hour, you can be in the small but world-famous Pisa, where you can marvel at the iconic leaning tower. Heading south, the journey continues to Volterra and San Gimignano, two towns that delight with their monochrome brick buildings. Then follow the famous cypress avenue Viale dei Cipresi to charming Bolgheri before heading to Siena, whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trip finally ends south in the Val d'Orcia, which with its picturesque landscapes is one of Tuscany's showpieces.

3. the Italian Riviera

The northern Italian port city of Genova is not a typical hotspot for travelers, but this makes it the ideal starting point for a tour along the Ligurian coast. Here you start your vacation relaxed without the masses of tourists and get a taste of the colorful cities of the Italian Riviera. The first destination is the gorgeous Portofino, still associated with its many celebrity visitors. The itinerary then leads to Sestri Levante and Levanto before exploring the five villages of the famous Cinque Terre region with their pastel-colored houses. Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Manarola, Corniglia and Riomaggiore are very close to each other and are best visited by boat tour, as the roads between the coastal villages are very branched and rambling. The coastal road trip finally ends in La Spezia, the second largest city in Liguria, which hosts an important naval base.

Here you should plan fewer individual stops, but more time in the individual places, because there is so much to see. Starting from the Città Eterna (the eternal city of Rome) you drive via Caserta to Naples, where you should spend at least three days. The route then leads to Pompeii and Salerno, where you get a little breather after the turbulent Naples. After a detour in Cosenza, an absolute insider tip known as the Athens of Italy, you head along the coast to end the tour in Reggio Calabria, where dreamy beaches, buildings steeped in history and legendary food await.

The stunning region in southeastern Italy is becoming increasingly popular with travelers. No wonder: with its cities of white limestone buildings, an abundance of wonderful beaches, and excellent olive oil, Puglia is clearly on the rise. One of the dreamiest road trips through Italy starts in the Puglian capital of Bari, and heads to Ostuni, the white city, via Fasano. Continue west to Taranto, a fascinating city with influences from ancient Greece. The next stop is Matera, a city that 50 years ago was known as the "shame of Italy" because of its cave dwellers. However, today it is an up-and-coming hotspot among jet-setters. Via Altamura, you then head northeast again to Trani before coming full circle again in Bari, where you can enjoy big-city charm by the sea.

There is no city in the world quite like Venice. Built on a lagoon, this city of bridges and mysterious canals once ruled the seas as the world’s mightiest republic. Though hundreds have years have passed since Venetians held significant power, their wealth and influence is on display in the faded palazzi lining the Grand Canal and maginficent treasures of San Marco – the basilica, campinile and Ducal palace. Spend three days in Venice admiring her beauty and getting lost down the side streets and canals.

If you love the idea of colorful houses perched on cliffs overlooking the sea add a side trip to the Cinque Terre for 3 nights (between Florence and Milan) and an extra day to Rome or Venice . You can reach La Spezia for the Cinque Terre easily by train from Florence with a quick stop off to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Do you prefer the countryside and visiting pretty hilltop towns? Use your extra days to spend time in southern Tuscany, Umbria or the undiscovered Le Marche region. For this option, renting a car or joining a tour would be best.

2. Southern Italy and Rome

Does the unparalleled beauty of the Amalfi Coast capture your imagination? If you like the smells and sounds of fresh sea breezes, jaw dropping views and delicious seafood and are a romantic at heart then this itinerary is for you. Fly into Naples and spend time on the Amalfi Coast and Capri, taking advantage of their proximity to Pompeii and the vibrant city of Naples . Then head up to Rome to enjoy the very best of the Eternal City to end your vacation. This itinerary can be done in reverse and flying into and out of either airport works too.

  • Best for: Sun seekers, sea lovers and honeymooners
  • Places visited: Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii, Naples, Rome
  • Start/end in: Naples or Rome. Try to arrange flights into one and out of other
  • Recommended transport: Private transfer to Amalfi Coast, local ferries, private driver, train to Rome

Day 1 – 4: Amalfi Coast or Capri

Choose a base on the Amalfi Coast for enjoying the incredible scenery of this world-famous coastline. The major towns of Positano and Amalfi have the most accommodation choices but you may like to try one of the smaller towns such as Praiano for a quieter, more local break. Staying in Capri is also an option. From there you can take the ferry to Positano or Amalfi and avoid the day-tripping crowds on the island.

Spend four days on the Amalfi Coast and you’ll be completely rejuvenated. You can swim in the sea, lounge on the beach, hike the famous Path of the Gods, take in jaw-dropping views and feast on delicious seafood. Or do very little at all. Taking to the water on a private boat tour is our favorite thing to do.

  • Must see highlights: Sunset aperitifs, long lunches and browsing boutiques in Positano ,  visit cliff top Ravello to discover exclusive villas with jaw dropping views, explore Amalfi’ s cathedral and small passageways, hike the Path of the Gods , be transfixed by the natural beauty of the isle of Capri (a day trip there is a must do but stay on the island for the best experience).
  • Where to stay : There are advantages to staying in any of the Amalfi Coast town, find out which town will suit you best in our guide to the Amalfi Coast towns
  • Getting to the Amalfi Coast – whether you arrive into Naples or Rome airport, the most effective way to get to the coast is via private transfer . Public transportation will take 3 times as long and you’ll need to manage luggage across awkward terrain. For Capri take the ferry from Naples or Sorrento.

Travel by ferry or private transfer to Sorrento – Travel times vary • Recommended transfers

Day 5 – 7: Sorrento

Perched at the end of the Sorrentine peninsula, Sorrento is perfectly positioned to make the most of the surrounding Campania region including the historic sights of Pompeii and Herculaneum. From Sorrento, it is an easy trip into Naples, one of Italy’s most exciting cities. At the end of the day you can retire back in the seaside town, soak up the relaxed atmosphere and dine on the freshest seafood.

  • Must see highlights: Watch the colorful boats bobbing up and down in Marina Grande , visit the fascinating city of Pompeii destroyed by nearby Mount Vesuvius , discover the local cuisine on a food tour , spend at least a day in Naples eating pizza, visiting the Archaeological Museum and soaking up the exciting atmosphere. Or visit Reggia Caserta – a huge royal palace that is bigger than Versailles
  • Where to stay: Sorrento has many accommodation options from family-run hotels to chic boutique establishments. Choose your favorite in our Sorrento guide

Transfer to Naples then travel by train to Rome – Travel time 1.5 hours • Check ticket prices and schedules

Day 8 – 10: Rome

Rome is a welcome addition to any Italian itinerary whether it is your first or fifth visit. You could spend months exploring the city and simply scratch the surface. If it’s your first time visiting the Eternal City, no doubt you’ll want to see the Colosseum and ancient sites, St Peter’s Basilica and Vatican Museums plus the treasures of the historic center – Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon.

Returning visitors can explore deeper into the city and uncover more of its mysteries. Whether you love ancient history, Renaissance art or simply discovering new neighborhoods and browsing boutiques, you’ll find plenty of activities in Rome . The city is also a great base for a day trip or two before heading home.

  • Must-see highlights: The Colosseum and ancient sites, admire the cultural treasures of St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums , throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain , climb the Spanish Steps for views of the city, look up in awe in the Pantheon , pose by the fountains in Piazza Navona
  • Discover Rome : wander the gardens and admire art at Villa Borghese , imagine Romans bathing at the Baths of Caracalla , stroll along the Tiber to the Jewish Quarter for lunch amid ancient ruins, soak up the panoramic views from the Giardino degli Aranci or Terrazza delle Quadrighe
  • Recommended day trip: head to the hills and the pretty town of Orvieto overlooking the Umbrian countryside, just 70 minutes by train from Roma Termini station or take a trip to Tuscany for hilltowns, fortresses and vineyards
  • Where to stay : Read our city accommodation guide for Rome or jump straight to our preferred Airbnbs and hotels near the Pantheon (we think it’s the best area to stay for first timers) or Trastevere if you want to explore further

Extend this trip

Venice is a city of wonders to explore on foot and get lost in its labyrinth of bridges and canals.

  • Must see highlights: Stand in wonder in Piazza San Marco , visit the Basilica San Marco adorned with jewels and mosaics, take a romantic gondola ride down the side canals,  enjoy the Grand Canal by private boat or even on the vaporetto water bus, cross the Rialto Bridge and browse the fish market
  • Explore Venice: spend half a day in Cannaregio (the Jewish Quarter), visit the Peggy Guggenheim gallery for a modern art fix, stroll the Giardini della Biennale , take in the views from the belltower of San Giorgio Maggiore

Rent car and drive to Bolzano – Take the Great Dolomites Road scenic route via Belluno (SS241) stopping at fairytale lake Lago di Carezza – driving time 3.5 hours • Recommended car rental

Day 4 – 7: Dolomites – Bolzano (or Cortina d’Ampezzo)

Recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding natural beauty, the Dolomites mountain ranges are 18 peaks that rise over 3,000 meters above sea level. Between the peaks and passes you’ll find pretty villages, clear mountain lakes and some of the most incredible views in the world. The mountains provide a natural border with Austria and Switzerland but you’ll find their cuisine and culture greatly influence this region.

Make your base in Bolzano, a lovely alpine city from where you can explore the surrounding area easily by car if your goal is touring and sightseeing. If hiking is a priority then choose Cortina D’Ampezzo from where you can walk the famous Croda da Lago circuit and Cinque Torri .

  • Must see highlights: Swoon over magical Lago di Braies  (you can rent a boat or walk around it too!), drive the Passo Gardena (Gardena Pass) famous for hairpin bends and stunning scenery, explore pretty alpine villages – Ortisei, San Cassiano, Siusi; be awestruck by the peaks at Tre cime di Lavaredo and meet Ötzi , a 5,000 year old man frozen in snow, in Bolzano

Garda has been a destination to relax since Roman times but you can be as busy as you like, enjoying local hikes, visiting villages by ferry or even venturing into nearby Verona. Weitere Infos

Was unterscheidet Car Tours Reisen von anderen Reisegesellschaften?

Endlich wieder ins Ausland reisen!

Prepare yourself for a trip to the Eternal City, Rome! After breakfast in your Florence hotel, you check out and then you are transferred to the railway station. In about 1.5 hour you arrive at this magical city. Your driver meets you and takes you to your central hotel where your private guide is waiting for you. Together you set off on a tour to explore the famous hallmarks of the Eternal City.

On your adventure, you see the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, as well as observe the masterpieces by Bernini, Borromini, and many others.

After the tour, you return to your hotel and you have the evening at leisure.

Meet the morning with a delightful breakfast and then meet your guide to explore the famous Eternal City on a walking tour. Situated on low ground between the Palatine and Capitoline hills, the iconic Roman Forum is your first stop. Built around the 3rd century A.D., the landmark served as the center of politics and rituals.

Today you behold the historical remnants of ancient Rome such as the Temple of Caesar and the Arch of Septimius Severus, as well as the neighboring site of the city’s first settlements, Palatine Hill.

Of course, the legendary Colosseum, the symbol of Rome. The biggest building of its kind in the Roman Emire and an arena for gladiators' fights is your next travel point. Basically known as Flavius amphitheater, it could hold up to 70 thousand spectators.

After the tour, your guide takes you back to the hotel and you have the evening at leisure.

Following breakfast, your guide meets you and walks you to the world’s smallest independent state, Vatican*. In the Vatican, you visit private apartments of Julius II, Pinecone Courtyard, Gallery of the Maps, Gallery of the Tapestries and Gallery of Candelabra.

The Sistine Chapel is your next point, where you admire Michelangelo's famous frescoes and learn about the history behind them.

Have a coffee break and continue your journey to St. Peter’s Basilica with a fascinating Pieta, a famous work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo, and Bernini's impressive Papal Canopy, the Barberini family legacy left to the Basilica.

Your tour ends in St. Peter’s Square, where Michelangelo's Dome is located as well as the gorgeous architecture works by Bernini.

After the tour of the Vatican, you enjoy a free walk to the hotel together with your guide having a photo stop at the legendary Castel Sant'Angelo, which in due times served as a mausoleum, a fortress, refuge and a prison.

When you return to the hotel, you have the rest of the day at leisure to enjoy the beauty of Rome on your own.

  • Please note:  the Vatican is a sacred religious place thus the dress code for visiting should be applied just as when you visit any church in Italy: no shorts – no uncovered knees and shoulders, no backpacks. Due to religious services St. Peters Basilica may be spontaneously closed, thus entrance to St. Peters Basilica may not be guaranteed.

It is the final day of your marvelous journey to Italy! After having breakfast your driver meets you at the hotel lobby and transfers you to the airport. Have a safe flight! We hope to work on your future vacations!

  • Recommended extension:  If you would like to extend your Italian vacation, continue exploring its wonders with our extension to Naples or the Amalfi coast. Contact your specialist for details.

I’m just back from 10 blissful days in Italy. Our family, along with three other families, choose Bella Italia as our destination campsite for our 2022 holidays. The lovely Michelle in Breakaway travel agents in Dublin (who I have worked with for the last 3 years) did all the booking for us.

We booked last year so we only had to pay a €99 deposit and got an early booking discount so it all helped. (months later I was asked to work on this trip for Breakaway to showcase the site so my mobile ended up being complimentary- the joys of my lovely career).

Situated directly on Lake Garda, we knew we were in for a treat. Although the campsite was extremely busy- mad dashes to get a sunbed at 9 am- what the campsite lacked, the area made up for.

Now, I’m being slightly unfair here, because the campsite lacked very little but some things could be done slightly better. Like what, I hear you ask! I guess the kid’s clubs and entertainment could have been better quality, they could definitely do with another pool complex to deal with the number of campers on site and they could have more staff in peak season to deal with check-ins (some people were queueing 90 minutes in 35-degree heat at reception (to be fair they had a tent set up outside to provide some kind of shade).

But, overall I would give the campsite an 8/10. As the days progressed, and we ventured outside the gates we fell in love with the lake (which the kids swam in and partook in water sports a number of days on the trip.)

Lake Garda is right there in front of the back gate and it’s breath-taking. 15 minutes down to the right was the stunning town of Peschiera del Garda, one of the prettiest towns I’ve ever been in. And, from the campsite, you can easily access cities like Verona (14 min on a train from Peschiera) and Venice (one hour). You can also get a boat to many stunning towns around the lake (we recommend Sirmione) and visit the several theme parks and waterparks 15 minutes away (Garda Land and Movieland). You will NEVER be bored. It’s an active, busy campsite with so so much to do in the areas. We will certainly be back to visit again.

Below, I’ve compiled 20 tips to keep in mind when going to Bella Italia.

Please note we were guests of Eurocamp and booked via Breakaway.ie on this trip. We stayed in the Azure Plus mobile (their biggest) and we were located on the Barcelona section. It’s was very beautiful.

NOTE- All these tips are based on our experience during our 10 days in June 2023 (June 3-13 th ). Things might be different off-peak or in July/August.

Queue for Pool

If you want to be guaranteed a sun bed or two by the pool you need to be up early and join the queue of people at the gates of the pools. There are a few so suss them out first. Bring your beach towels to secure your seats, and to be fair to others waiting, make sure to avail of the beds and pool early in the morning. We only did this one or two times (mainly because there was 21 of us) and found ourselves meeting up at the pool in the late afternoon times when there were beds available and it was slightly quieter. We often “borrowed” some seats from the entertainment area also which is right beside the pool to have somewhere to base ourselves if no sun beds were available.

Swim caps required

Swim caps are required in one of the pools. It’s the big one that people tend to swim lanes in. We never used it so didn’t need the caps but if you guys are serious swimmers, swim caps will be required to use this pool.

Shop opening times

Bring snacks if you arrive late in the evening. In June the shop was opened 7.30am to 7.30pm. If you arrive late in the evening you won’t have access to the shop but the take away restaurants are open late so you’ll get fed at least. We had trouble sourcing milk for Riley (our 1 year old) but I was able to get some at the restaurant so all was fine.

Water shoes for the lake

You can’t go to Bella Italia and not swim in the lake (or at least dip your feet in). But, warning, its rocky so not the nicest feeling on your feet. We bought swim shoes for the kids in Sport’s Direct before leaving Ireland (but you can get the on-site if needs be) so when they entered the lake the stones didn’t bother them. They really are a must. The lake is absolutely stunning and you’ll find yourself drawn to it more and more each day.

Hot water is HOT

The hot water in the mobiles (or at least in ours) was turned up super high so it was roasting in the shower. It took a few tries to get the temp right without scalding myself. You can turn it down at the mains inside the mobile so I’d advise to do that slightly before you hop into the shower or use the hot tap in the sink.

Join the Facebook Group

Join the Bella Italia Camping Resort group on Facebook to give you all the tips before you go. It’s ideal if people are leaving as they will pop up stuff they have left over like floaties, balls etc. So don’t buy anything, keep an eye on the group for stuff to be passed on. It’s also a great place for people to answer your questions about the campsite.

Most places onsite don’t take cards unless the spend is over €10 so when the kids want copious amounts of ice cream and it only comes to €6.70 you’ll need to pay cash. (things are a good price onsite, you never feel ripped off). There is a bank link right opposite the supermarket if you get stuck.

Bring wifi or buy it

Okay, so the mobile homes don’t have any wifi so you’ll fly through your data (if your phone even works, mine didn’t at all) but you can use the campsite’s wifi in three areas. Reception, down at the restaurants and the pool areas. You can also purchase wifi from an external company (ask reception) if needs be. My advice though is don’t. Enjoy the break away from the screens, read a book, play games and enjoy time together.

Avoid supermarket early

There was always a queue for the supermarket (mainly the bakery section) between 7.30 am and 9 am. You could be waiting approx. 20 minutes. If you don’t mind great if you do then go after 9 am. I did see some people skipping the queue and walking straight in because they didn’t need anything in the bakery so you could do that also.

Do a big shop in Lidl

There are 2 Lidl stores both about 1k away. Our friends had a car so we hopped in with them the morning after we arrived and did a big shop. If you don’t have a car organize a taxi. You CAN walk to one of them (go out the main entrance and turn right and Lidl is about 1.1km down the road BUT it’s hot so you’ll be limited on what you can carry back). I’ve heard people say you can get the bus there too so that might be an option but ask reception. To be fair they have everything onsite anyway but it’s handy to do a big shop at the beginning.

Invest in mossie spray

I say this but the mosquitos weren’t much of an issue in this part of Italy. I’m not sure why (we’ve been an hour away in Pra’ Dellle Torri campsite a few years ago and all got eaten alive). However, we got sprays in Lidl to keep the feckers away and we never got bitten.

Go to a theme park

You can’t go to Lake Garda and not visit a theme park (well you can) but we recommend you do. We chose Movieland (so much quieter and so affordable- €30 adult ticket and €25 child ticket. Kids under 100cm free.) It was absolutely fantastic. You can view the trip on my highlights on Instagram. It’s down the road from Garda Land (which my older kids and John went to the next day and they loved it also but preferred Movieland because there were no queues). We got a taxi there and back. Both times we were waiting over an hour for a taxi as they were so busy. Movieland (part of Caneva world) also has an epic theme park (our friends visited and gave it 10/10) and a night-time themed medieval times dinner that sounded fantastic. Also, from June 18th you can get an evening ticket for Garda Land (cheaper and fewer queues and open until 1am).

Bring a water bottle

Bring those stainless steel water bottles with you from home to keep your drinks nice and cold by the pool. A simple thing to pack but really handy for trips about the place.

Ice your water

Throw a ¾ full bottle of water into the freezer overnight and the next day bring it with you to the pool (top it up with water from the tap) and it will take hours to melt so you’ll have access to cold water all day.

Get the Bella Italia train into Peschiera del Garda

If you only leave the campsite once, then can we recommend you do so on the little Bella Italia train that goes every hour (didn’t go between 12-3 pm) into the town of Peschiera (15 min brisk walk) and you can get it home again. It was a lovely little journey and the kids really enjoyed the fun of it. It leaves from outside the supermarket. Times and costs will be displayed beside it.

Bring tea towels from home

Eurocamp provided one tea towel for the 10 days so try to grab some from home just to have on hand. These are handy for drying up the plates etc. We didn’t bother using the dishwasher, but there was one there. I couldn’t find any in Lidl to purchase.

Go off site to eat

Although the food in the restaurants on site was very good to be fair, we highly recommend getting dinner down by the lake in Peschiera or in Sirmione or if you turn left at the lakeside entrance gate you’ll find another lovely restaurant three minutes down the path.

Walk to Peschiera

I know I’ve just mentioned the train but it would be a shame not to walk into Peschiera one of the evenings. The walk-in by the lake is stunning. It’s about 15-20 minutes and the kids will enjoy it. Turn right as you go out the lakeside gate.

Visit the market

Peschiera has a wonderful market on a Monday. I got a lovely dress from one of the many clothing stalls but they have something for everyone. It’s a nice way to spend your morning or early afternoon.

Bring masks

While we were there masks were still required on public transport (although they weren’t enforced). So any buses or trains we took masks were a must. Kids didn’t have to wear them. It’s just handy to have a few in your bag. Taxis didn’t require them or any restaurants etc. Ryanair flying out to Italy required them and you were asked to have them boarding the flight from Italy to Ireland but the airline staff on board said they weren’t a requirement as we were flying back to Ireland.

You can view all my trip highlights over on our Instagram page- Getaways with Kids.
