Outer Banks Gearworks Laser Tag and Fun Center

Outer Banks Gearworks Laser Tag and Fun Center

Here’s some high energy entertainment for the kids, and for young adults (or young at heart) who love laser tag. On one side of this large facility is the “moon bounce inflatable room,” where the young ‘uns can go and bounce about to their heart’s content. Parties are available for up to 12 kids ages 2 through 6 – bring your own cake. But it’s the other room where the real action is. Arcade games are located just inside the door, then there’s another door. And behind that it’s another world. Black lights, music and fog combine to make a spooky atmosphere where players with (completely harmless) laser guns duck behind shadowy corners to hide from pursuers wielding their own laser guns. It’s a large area to play in, and everyone is clearly having fun. Games can be purchased as a single, a 3-game discount, or all-day pass. Unlimited play all night from 7 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays is also offered, as well as overnight parties and private party room parties.

READY FOR AN ADVENTURE?

See the wild horses of the outer banks and whip through beach, dune, and forest trails with hummer adventure tours..

With the continued development of off-road trails, the horses were becoming harder to find in their natural habitat. When they were found, regulations prevented our tours from stopping and disembarking on public land and “roads” to take pictures.

Although by law we never get closer than 50 feet, we found that most customers do prefer to get out of the vehicle at points along the tour so they can be stationary while taking pictures.

To improve things, we purchased land in 2014. We can now venture into three distinct, previously inaccessible ecosystems that are teeming with wildlife of all types.

The new land provides an exciting ride through a maritime forest and high sand dune trails, with a view of protected marshlands. These areas are inaccessible by most off-road vehicles due to the soft, sugary sands and high inclines.

Only true off-road vehicles can make it without getting stuck, and in this area the Hummer really comes into its own.

NO PAVEMENT, NO PROBLEMS.

ABOUT OUR HUMMERS

Our 13-passenger, open-air Hummer starts life as a Hummer H1. We then upgrade many of the mechanical components to the military spec equivalents, recondition the engine and drive-train, and extend the frame and body by 2 feet.

Our Hummer H1 vehicles have been customized with your safety in mind. All designs have been over-engineered to build the safest and most comfortable ride possible.

Seats have seatbelts and restraint systems for child seats. All seats are actual car seats — no boat-style bench seats or plastic bucket seats are used in our vehicles.

An additional upper windshield with a top made with a combination of fine mesh and clear plastic enables occupants a 360-degree view while also providing protection from UV rays and unexpected inclement weather.

After customization, the Hummer is capable of seating 13 passengers with more leg room than any standard SUV. Individual seats that are 21 inches wide (no bench seats), in a stadium seating configuration, offer ultimate comfort and visibility for all.

Awesome wild horse tour in a Hummer in comfortable carlike seats. Our tour guide Ned was great and very knowledgeable. We saw over 40 wild horses and 2 baby horses. Such a fun trip.

We had a fantastic tour with Wild Horse Adventures. Our sons, 10 and 13, were very entertained. The tour guide we had, Victor, was not only fun but very knowledgeable about the history and the horses. He answered all of our questions with ease. I highly recommend taking a tour with Wild Horses Adventure Tours.

We had such an incredible time on our tour! It was worth every penny. Stu was a fantastic tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the area, history of the horses, and the individual herds. We can’t recommend this enough!

We had an amazing tour today with “Just Tom”. He knows a lot about the history of the area, shared interesting facts, knew a lot about the horses, treated the horses with respect (very careful around them), and was a lot of fun to spend 2 hours with. The hummers were a great way to do it too. Obviously important too was that we were able to see about 30-50 horses of the 100 or so there (not guaranteed of course). We were able to get some great photos and learn a ton. Our 2 and 4 year old girls really enjoyed it too. We are considering going again this week. Thanks!

Probably my favorite adventure of our vacation! Mike was an excellent tour guide! I loved the stories he told us about the horses and the history of the area! Our tour was at 5:30 in the evening and was a great time to go! We saw so many horses!!! Even one of the new foals! So exciting! We didn’t want it to end!!!

Learning about the ponies, seeing them, and the experience of the ride across the sands and into their (and our) habitat. Most of all, the good stewardship that our guide expressed towards the land, the ponies, and the importance of conservation and care.

Absolutely AMAZING experience! Our tour guide Tom was so knowledgeable and was committed to helping us see the most horses possible (even the 3 day old baby!) Don’t miss out on this if you visit the Outer Banks!

We just got back from a week in Corolla. This tour was the highlight of our trip. Everyone from 9 to 75 enjoyed it. We booked the entire hummer for our party of 11. Tom was very informative and did a fabulous job! I totally recommend booking a trip with them the next time you are in the area.

Outer Banks Horse Tours

Outer Banks wild horses receive a lot of popularity, and one of the best ways to see them is by participating in a wild horse tour. Outer Banks horse tours take place in open-air safari-style vehicles, SUVs or Jeeps that cart you over the dunes and through the beach as you search to find those Colonial Spanish Mustangs frolicking in their natural habitat. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides who provide you with lots of information about the area’s history and heritage as well as historical facts about the Outer Banks wild horses and how they got here in the first place. Your guide will also point out various flora and fauna that inhabit the environment. If you’d prefer a break from the norm of jeep and safari tours, you can elect to look for the wild horses via a Segway that will roll you over different types of terrain. Check out the listings below to see what Outer Banks horse tours are available during your trip.

Corolla Wild Horse Fund's museum, gift shop and offices are located in Historic Corolla Village. Visit them to discover the fascinating history and legacy of the Banker strain of Colonial Spanish Mustangs. Mustangs were brought to the Outer Banks nearly 500 years ago and their descendants are still with us today, although this hardy, majestic breed is now highly endangered. The whole family can learn about the horses and their cultural significance by visiting the Fund's new exhibit and speaking with their knowledgeable staff. Donations are accepted and benefit the Corolla Wild Horse Fund, managers of the wild herd. All proceeds from the Corolla Wild Horse Fund gift shop also benefit the Fund and the wild horses. The Fund has a Porch Pick-Up program so you can shop online and pick up your merchandise on the porch.

Open all year, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund also offers special programming, especially in the summer. Activities include a weekly event called Mustang Mornings in which their rehabilitation facility at the Betsy Dowdy Equine Center in Grandy will be open for visitors to see the rescued mustangs under the Fund's care and the work that they do with them. It's an opportunity to get an inside look at things and perhaps meet a horse you've heard much about. There are also Meet a Mustang events at various locations and times throughout the summer where visitors can see and pet a tamed and gentled mustang as well as Paint a Mustang events using wooden horses in various sizes.  For current information on hours of operation and the scheduling of any of these events, see the Fund's website and Facebook page. How to See the Corolla, NC Wild Horses (For Free & For A Fee)

Wild Horse Corolla North Carolina Outer Banks

No question about it, one of the most popular attractions on the Outer Banks is the wild horses of Corolla, North Carolina. Descendants of the original colonial Spanish Mustangs, these fantastic animals running free on the northern OBX beaches have captivated us for decades.

If you’ve never seen these majestic beauties, you’re missing out!

Sure, you may have climbed to the top of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or tried your hand at riding waves during a surfing lesson. You may have even spent an afternoon learning about the two brothers from Dayton, OH, who came to the Outer Banks at the turn of the last century and changed the world forever with their flying machines.

You may have done these fantastic OBX activities, but have you ever watched a Corolla wild horse jog along the beach? It’s something you have to witness at least once!

If you’d like to see the Corolla wild horses, you have two options:

  • You can book a wild horse tour with a company like Corolla Outback Adventures
  • Or you can embark on your own, self-guided journey on the 4×4 beaches of Carova on a quest to find the wild horses!

Seeing the horses isn’t a guarantee with either method, but you will likely spot at least one. The bright side is that even if you don’t see a wild horse, you’ll still be able to enjoy Corolla’s incredible natural beauty and diverse wildlife during your adventure!

Free Self-Guided Corolla Wild Horse Tour

Let’s start by mentioning that you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. And before you ask, NO, do not attempt to drive your car, minivan, or any other vehicle that doesn’t specifically have an option for a four-wheel drive on the beach.

Each year, someone takes a photo of a vacationer who attempted to drive on the soft packed sand in Corolla or Hatteras Island in a minivan and ended up getting stuck… Don’t be that guy or girl!

Okay, so drive your four-wheel-drive vehicle to Corolla and keep heading north on NC 12 (past Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the Whalehead) until you come to a point where there is no more paved road. Then, let some air out of your tires to help with traction, head out onto the beach and continue heading north.

Some say that you’ll need to drive at least six miles before you see the horses – others have spotted them within a few hundred feet from where the paved road ends. So keep heading north until you’ve seen enough horses or until there is no more beach to drive on!

Here is an image from Google Maps… You’ll see that the paved road ends right here, and if you want to continue north, you have to drive on the beach.

In addition to the 4×4 area, the Corolla wild horses are regularly spotted in the backyards of homes that are located in subdivisions before the spot where the road ends as well.

Instead of driving aimlessly through the many cul-de-sacs of Corolla in search of the horses, go on the beach instead or reserve a Corolla wild horse tour with a reputable local company (see below).

Guided Corolla Wild Horse Tours

Ponying up the money for a guided Corolla wild horse tour may be the best option for those that are either unfamiliar with the area, not comfortable driving on the beach (or don’t own a four-wheel-drive vehicle) or would like a hassle-free option that requires you to only show up and enjoy the ride.

Many different companies offer guided Corolla wild horse tours, all of which you’re sure to have a memorable experience.

For the most part, when you book a guided Corolla wild horse, expect that you’ll be riding in an open-air, safari-style vehicle that has seating for about 14 patrons. The guides are usually very entertaining and ensure that you have the best possible chance of seeing a wild horse.

Unlike Outer Banks dolphin tours with a company like Kitty Hawk Kites , there is no 99% guarantee that you’ll spot one of these wild Spanish Mustangs. (However, there is an excellent chance!)

Corolla wild horse tours cost about $50 for adults and $25 for children. Many companies offer discounts if you are willing to go on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Most companies that offer this service do not do so year-round, in fact, many will close up shop for the season sometime in early to mid-October and then reopen in the spring, sometime around May.

Book your tour online in minutes.

Please keep in mind!   (This is important!)

Feeding or coming within 50 feet of a Corolla wild horse is 100% illegal and dangerous for both you and the horse.

The Currituck County Police Department will not hesitate to issue you a ticket if you break this law! There are numerous photos of people petting one of the horses on Facebook and Instagram each summer. Just don’t do it!

Oh, and don’t forget to bring a camera! Pictures of the Corolla wild horses look great in family vacation photo albums! (They also look great on your personal Facebook page wall.)

This video from Wild Horse Adventure Tours will give you an idea of what to expect during a guided wild horse tour.

Best of luck on your adventure!

Hi, I just planned a surprise trip to NC for my husband and will be in Corolla 12/3 and 12/4 just to see the horses. One co. I called said to book online and another said they are only seasonal. Now, I am panicking! Could you please help me make this happen by recommending a co that is reliable, and open or a location where we can rent a 4/W drive vehicle for a day? I can try and change our rental to a 4/w drive as well. Any information you can give me is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance, Suzanne.

Thank u so much, this is helpful and informative.

Thank you for a beautiful video. I live in Ohio and had domestic horses most of my life. I then started going to AZ in winter and a year plus of training from a wonderful trainer to learn all about wild horses and I then eventually was accepted into the rescue center taking care of our foals. Making milk everyday watching them working with them the amount this group decided to only do. They keep them as wild as possible for now. So I just do what they are doing for the one man who has been working with wild horses all over the world taught me so much, boy did I get a kick in thinking oh I know so much since I’ve raised domestic for years. I also finished a course with Janes and Shelly in UK on the trust technique which helped me in all my wild and domestic animals. I had received years ago my license on wildlife rehabilitation. I took through our local college. It was fun and I learned so much and saved many animals from local neighbors and released the bird to smaller mammals. I had one on one training with a vet on their work blood testing and diagnosing for some hours on domestic mainly dogs. Dogs, I’m an AKC CGC trainer evaluator for years. I do it free to be bonded and insured on all I do. My dog work seems mainly lately on stress release for so many that expect a dog to just not be stressed in a new setting. :) I hope to visit your area soon I was thinking of renting a cottage on the beach. I’d love to visit your center soon in the future it’s beautiful and I really pray someday the small group will change their ways and start doing rehab and adoption in AZ..Sadly it’s so different in ownership and who can afford it in AZ.. I plan on visiting your wild mustang I hope I can find a cabin like my niece did where she awoke with her coffee watching the horses walk right by her as taught by me she respected them, and they of course felt safe to continue slowly on as dawn came to their next destiny of breakfast along fences of homes she said. Again Thank you for your video it’s very informative and I pray AZ and other places pass laws of no feeding the horses 50 feet distance and quit taking land away from them. Get a free outer banks travel guide, take a virtual tour, wild horses on the outer banks, wild, free & beautiful .

You’ve seen pictures of them on Facebook, represented in books and on the big screen in “Nights in Rodanthe”, on T-shirts and coffee mugs—now see them in person.

Few creatures evoke such a mystique and conjure a sense of independence and freedom like the wild horses of the Outer Banks. Officially North Carolina's state horse, these mustang ponies are descended from equines brought here by Spanish explorers of the New World more than 500 years ago. Take an off-road safari tour in a caravan with other visitors to see them in the 4x4 areas north of where NC 12’s pavement runs out, or try to find them on your own. Either way, it's an awe-inspiring adventure.

Wild Horse Adventure in Corolla, NC

The best way to see wild ponies and discover some of the most unique sights the Outer Banks has to offer. With new, exclusive access to the Wild Horse Sanctuary, we take you through three distinct ecosystems in search of local wildlife and the Outer Banks Wild Spanish Mustangs on one of our open-air Hummers.

Our 13-passenger, open-air Hummer starts life as a Hummer H1. We then upgrade many of the mechanical components to the military spec equivalents, recondition the engine and drive-train, and extend the frame and body by two feet. Our Hummer H1 vehicles have been customized with your safety in mind. All designs have been over-engineered to build the safest and most comfortable ride possible.

  • The roll cage is built into the frame of the vehicle for ultimate protection.
  • Seats have seatbelts and restraint systems for child seats.
  • All seats are actual car seats – no boat-style bench seats or plastic bucket seats are used in our vehicles.

An additional upper windshield with a top made with a combination of fine mesh and clear plastic enables occupants a 360-degree view while also providing protection from UV rays and unexpected inclement weather.

After customization, the Hummer is capable of seating 13 passengers with more legroom than any standard SUV. Individual seats that are 21 inches wide (no bench seats), in a stadium seating configuration, offer ultimate comfort and visibility for all.

Please Note: Tour times are departure times. We request that you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.
