Best safari luggage – Duffel bags & backpacks for African travels

Unloading safari luggage from a small plane at the Maasai Mara airstrip

The best African safari luggage is completely different to the necessary luggage for a city trip or backpacking expedition.

There are some very unique conditions that make it important to choose specific safari luggage. This includes the dusty savanna, cramped buses, and a jam-packed Land Cruiser bouncing into the wilderness.

The single most important part of African travel is having a suitable bag . Everything else you can work out after you have arrived.

But what is the best luggage for an African safari? Is it a duffel bag or backpack? And if so, what are the best safari bags for your trip?

In this guide, we’ll detail everything you need to know .

Best Luggage for Travel to Africa: The Basics

Off-roading in the Serengeti, in harmony with nature

An elephant does not care what you look like. Neither does a lion or even a safari guide .

So put the fancy clothes away and get practical . The wilderness simply isn’t a place for frivolities, and that starts with your safari luggage.

First, take a look at our detailed guide on what to pack for an African safari. In short – pack light and keep it simple .

Why? Well, however you plan to travel in Africa, it’s going to be full, and there isn’t enough space for big safari luggage.

  • Light aircraft safari flights have strict 15 kg baggage weight limits.
  • Safari vehicles are generally designed for off-roading and don’t have much space for luggage.
  • Travel on public transport, and you must be comfortable carrying your own luggage, including walking with it for more than a kilometer.

On an African adventure, you will be moving from place to place. On many safaris, you go to a different camp every day.

So there isn’t even time to unpack everything. Just take the basics and stay practical – this isn’t a fashion statement!

It doesn’t help if you are a wizard at folding safari clothing into crease-free, super-flat, super-organized piles. If your safari luggage is a complete dinosaur, it’s going to be disastrous.

And all the skillful arrangement adds up to nothing if your bag weighs more than King Kong with the Empire State Building in his left hand and a distressed blonde in his right!

What is the Best Luggage for Safari?

Driver loads safari luggage on top of a jeep

It is important to choose the right luggage for your African safari. This way, you can ensure the safety of all your belongings , whether on the plane, bus, or the savanna.

As mentioned above, you will need to pack light. And in addition to sticking to the strict weight limits, the bag should be able to hold all your clothing and gear .

Chances are you’ll need to pack several layers for those warm days and cold nights. You may also need space for your camera equipment .

Luckily, there are many lightweight duffel bags and backpacks that fit the bill. Below is a breakdown of the best safari duffel bags, backpacks, and travel bags for your next African adventure.

Best duffel bag for safari

The North Face duffel bags for a safari

Soft-sided luggage for safari is a must , and there are many duffel bags that offer exactly that. They are also spacious enough to store up to a week’s worth of clothing and toiletries, along with your other safari gear.

Depending on which African safari you’re visiting, it may help to look for a technical duffel bag .

These travel bags have unique features that can help a ton when out in the wilderness. Common features include a water-repellent shell and detachable straps .

But what is the best duffel bag for an African safari? Top brands to look out for include The North Face, Travelpro, and Red Oxx .

Best backpack for safari

Targus Drifter 15.6

While duffel bags are the preferred pick, backpacks are good too – especially if you’re going on a walking safari through Mana Pools National Park or elsewhere in Africa.

Like duffel bags, backpacks for safari need to be light , durable , and compressible . They also need to have enough pockets and compartments to store your belongings securely.

Backpacks also make for a good secondary bag. As such, opt for a roll-top as these can easily fit into your larger duffel bag during your flight and transfer. This way, you’re getting the best of both worlds.

What is the best safari backpack? Recommended picks include the Saddleback Leather backpack and the Targus Drifter.

Other safari travel bags

In addition to your safari duffel bag or backpack, there are a few other luggage items you may want to bring along.

These items are fanny packs , dopp kits , and camera bags . Each of these can easily fit into a larger bag and can come in hand when on a safari.

Remember to only bring these along if necessary as you might need the extra space.

How to Pick the Best Luggage for African Safari

Crossing the river whilst on safari in Tanzania

Let’s recap on the conditions, especially if you haven’t been on a safari in Africa.

On an African safari, you will be driving off-road , often on arid landscapes shrouded in dust. If it’s not dusty, it will probably be muddy.

Take a holiday at an all-inclusive beach resort, and you only use your luggage once – to get from your home to the resort.

In Africa, you will be on the move .

Whether public or private transport, flights or local buses, all that moving means things will spill, and your safari luggage is going to get dirty .

There are usually two options when it comes to what to wear on holiday. Change your clothes every day, or change your destination every day instead.

As you regularly move between destinations, you won’t need lots of luggage . And don’t worry if your clothes are a little sweaty or dust-stained. You will look more out of place in incredibly clean clothes.

It’s going to be hot, probably very hot. You will be battling against humidity. If it’s the rainy season, you and your luggage will get drenched.

These can be tough conditions, so the fundamental principle of all safari luggage is to make it easier for yourself .

In addition to knowing what the best bags for exploring in the wild are, here is how to choose safari luggage . These are sure to make your African adventure easier and packing less challenging.

1. You need quality luggage for safari (but not designer or expensive)

The eternal conundrum is whether to head for an exclusive luggage shop or select the cheapest , most rubbish piece of safari baggage available at a local supermarket.

Airline baggage controllers do not distinguish between designer labels and care not for price tags. Your bags get completely stuffed up, whether you paid a small fortune or got them in the bargain bin.

Cheap black and blue duffel bag

Your bag will be treated like a bag of potatoes by the majority of the people who handle it, from baggage controllers to local bus boys squashing your carefully labeled luggage next to some chickens and maize sacks.

Be warned – fragile stickers don’t work , especially not when you are on safari.

Spending hundreds or thousands on Louis Vuitton’s finest or the very latest Antler miracle is not a wise thing. And the cheapest safari luggage won’t live up to the demands of traveling in Africa.

Antler holdall

So go for a good , middle-of-the-road bag – the “iSpot” duffel bag range from Travelite is a recommended choice. They are durable and inexpensive.

iSpots are soft , relatively light, and have a built-in wheely handle so you can pull them along the road and runway when necessary.

iSpots have concealed zips , which all have locking facilities on them (so many lightweight safari bags only have locking docks on their main zips and not on side pockets).

Travelite iSpot range

They are hard-wearing , rugged , and spacious enough for two-week trips in Africa. The seams won’t rip and dispose of half your belongings onto a buffalo -covered savanna.

2. Safari travel bags should be soft

In Africa, there is plenty of space for elephants to charge around. But there is not enough space for luggage.

Keeping your weight below 15 kg is important. Your safari luggage needs to mold and squeeze into any available space.

Solid-state suitcases may be good for European city trips, but they are completely impractical for Africa .

These massive, stainless steel megalodons are too bulky, do not stack neatly, and take up too much unnecessary room.

Solid state suitcases

African safaris require soft , squishy bags that can squeeze into small spaces. As previously mentioned, duffel bags are perfect for this.

Backpacks are also a good choice, provided they don’t have a protruding and inflexible frame.

So let’s recap. The perfect safari luggage is light , squishy , hard-wearing , rugged enough for the dusty African savanna , and spacious enough for the safari essentials.

3. Reduce the volume of your safari bag

That aside, you should also take the volume of your bag into account. A 70-liter capacity is around average.

There are some excellent duffels out there , especially those designed for diving or adventure pursuits, which offer more space.

Coming in at $14.95, you get what you pay for with a duffel bag like this. It may last one trip if you are lucky!

But remember that a tightly packed soft bag is better than a loosely packed one because it keeps your belongings from rolling around and getting damaged.

It also prevents your cosmetics bag from getting a bang and leaking its contents all over your clothes.

Some duffel bags have straps that can compress the contents inside. These are ideal, as you can start light and still compress. Then you can expand it if you end up purchasing half a bag of souvenirs.

4. Other key considerations for the best luggage for safari travel

Travel toiletry bag

A wet bag is a great idea for cosmetics. Don’t buy an expensive one. You can use a run-of-the-mill high-street supermarket bag and tie the handles up tight to prevent unwanted spillages.

Consider decanting things like shampoo and moisturizer into small containers, or buy them in small bottles, to begin with.

The Body Shop , for example, has some great small bottles of products that are ideal for traveling. This reduces volume.

Your choice of safari luggage is peculiar to you and your needs , what you want to put in it and where you are going.

Whether you spend a lot of money on it or not, just make sure that it is secure with decent locks or, failing that, cable ties.

When flying, never put anything of value in it (jewelry, cameras, computers, cell phones, etc.).

And if it gets damaged by an airline’s baggage handler, make sure you stand up for your rights and get it either repaired or replaced.

Where to Take Your Safari Luggage

Photography equipment on a land cruiser bonnet

Having the right safari luggage can make or break your trip. But with this guide, you now know what to take and how to take it. So all that’s left is to go out and explore !

There are endless opportunities for a wild adventure in different locations – South Africa , Botswana , Namibia , Zambia , Zimbabwe , Tanzania , Kenya , Uganda , and gorilla trekking in Rwanda .

Hopefully, your safari luggage will keep you returning to Africa and experience as many incredible safaris as possible.

The 9 Very Best Hard-Side Suitcases

Not all hard-shells are created equal..

Portrait of Rachael Griffiths

In this article

Best hard-side suitcase overall.

  • Best less-expensive
  • Best lightweight
  • Best aluminum
  • Best for overpackers
  • Best for families

As a travel writer (and frequent flier) , I much prefer hard-shell suitcases over soft-sided options. A hard-side suitcase will shield your essentials from sudden drops or bangs, where a soft-side offers far less protection. Most of the experts I’ve spoken to agree: They say that as well as being more durable, hard-side suitcases are easier to wipe clean, slide from luggage racks, and rely on. They’re far less easier to repair than soft-side suitcases; a crack will be fatal — but that’s what warranties are for (and in all of my years traveling, it’s never happened to me, but it is of course a possibility).

As well as being reliable and not too bulky, the features that make a great hard-side suitcase include sturdy wheels (I like four wheels, so there are no two-wheeled options here), a lock to keep my items secure, and sturdy handles that can withstand being hoisted from train to plane to baggage claim. When it comes to material, I’m not too fussy. Suitcases are mainly made from either polycarbonate plastic or a plastic called ABS (but there are also some made from old-fashioned aluminum). Polycarbonate plastic is more durable than ABS, so it tends to cost a little more, but I’ve tracked down and tested cases made from both types of plastic that are affordable and reliable .

I’m constantly testing out new cases, but as I only have so many opportunities to travel, I also asked over 20 professionals — including cabin crew and those who fly weekly for work — for their expertise. I’ve also thoroughly vetted the reviews of each case, with a particular focus on warranty, longevity, and value, and picked plenty of options that look just as good as they work.

If you’re avoiding checked-bag added costs, these cases are all available in carry-on size — but if you’re trying to avoid the carry-on fees of budget airlines like Frontier and JetBlue, you can also browse our roundup of personal items (which are fee-free on all airlines).

What we’re looking for

The material best for you will largely depend on the kind of trips you plan on taking. If your vacation involves long weekends at a friend’s beach house, you can get away with a lighter case made of less durable ABS. But if you’re plane- and train-hopping through Europe for the summer or spending several weeks trekking across Southeast Asia, you might want to invest in a sturdier case (like one made of polycarbonate) that can take a knock or two.

Longer trips need bigger suitcases. For ease of comparison, I’ve focused on carry-on options here, but most companies make these suitcases in larger sizes too. Size and weight allowances for carry-on cases will vary by airline, and most companies I looked into (including Alaska and Delta) measure the dimensions or weight of cases. You can read here to learn more about carry-on regulations.

Four spinner wheels glide in all directions and are my favorite. You can also buy suitcases with two wheels, but I find that the four spinner wheels glide so much easier — which is valuable when trying to reach an Airbnb on a cobbled street. So all the picks here have four wheels.

Pecorella says it’s important to do your homework when it comes to warranty because, once a hard-side case cracks, it’s pretty tough to repair. “This is what we tell our customers all the time: If you are a regular traveler, really look into the luggage brand’s warranty and see what they are covering and what they are not covering,” he says. All of the cases on this list have a lifetime warranty, which covers your case for life, or a limited lifetime warranty, which means your case is covered for a certain number of years.

Away The Carry-on

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 47.9 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

To me, the Away suitcase is unmatched: I’ve previously named it our best carry-on , and our best piece of rolling luggage overall. This style of Away suitcase is available in a few sizes, but the Bigger Carry-On is the most popular. That’s because it has a huge 50-liter capacity, but it still fits inside most overhead bins . (Though on some budget and most European airlines, it’s too big to class as a carry-on — you’d have to opt for the smaller size.) The Away is so great because it’s not trying to reinvent the wheel: It has all the features that you’d expect from a good quality suitcase, but each feature has been executed perfectly. The 360-degree spinner wheels, for example, make light work of the cobbly London street I regularly drag it along, and the telescopic handle is so sturdy I don’t have to worry it may snap as I use it to hoist my suitcase up and down the stairs. It also has a TSA-approved lock, so I can do away with an added padlock, and a built-in portable charger , which comes in handy on long layovers between flights. It’s also such a smart, handsome-looking case, too. And it’s easy to keep it that way: If it ever gets a scuff or scratch, I just use the Away magic eraser to buff it out. I’ve taken it on countless trips just this year alone, and it still looks brand-new.

Stephanie Be from TravelBreak praises the suitcase for all the same reasons that I do. When I spoke to her, she called out the case’s “TSA-approved lock, 360-degree wheels, tough hardware, and sleek design.” Summer Hull , director of travel content at the Points Guy, added how useful she finds the interior compression divider, which “let us stuff all the things and zip it shut.” Photographer Nicholas Gill echoed this, and added that the nylon bag attached to the compression divider was a great place to “toss my clothes after getting caught in a sudden jungle downpour, which always seems to happen.”

Another perk is the limited lifetime warranty, which doesn’t expire, though there is a (fairly long) list on what it covers. Away will fix or replace any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or “anything else that impairs your use of the luggage,” according to the website. The battery pack, however, is limited to a two-year warranty. As I’ve mentioned in our other Away coverage, Strategist editor Maxine Builder has firsthand experience claiming a new bag under warranty with Away, after an internal zipper on her carry-on broke. “There was a fair bit of back-and-forth over the next four months, but I ended up with a replacement suitcase in exactly the same limited-edition colorway with the same hand-painted monogram, all for free,” she says.

Best (less expensive) ABS hard-side suitcase

Amazon Basics Hardside Carry-on Spinner Suitcase

Material: ABS hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity : 34 liters | Warranty: Limited warranty

When writer Robin Reetz told me about a hard-side case that cost less than $100, I had to try it. The case is so affordable because it’s made from ABS, which isn’t as durable as polycarbonate. But as I unpacked it, I was immediately surprised by just how thick and sturdy the case’s shell felt (I even gave it a rather satisfying thump with my fist to measure the quality). At 20 inches, the case is perfect for a four- to five-day trip , and I’ve tested this on a few long weekends visiting my parents back home. It’s not as roomy as my Away case, but I can easily pack a few outfits and a spare pair of shoes inside the case at its normal size. An expandable zipper makes it feel even roomier, giving you about 15 percent more packing space (but if you do expand the bag, you’ll need to check it into the hold rather than toss it into the overhead bin). Even with a limited shade range and a shorter warranty than other cases on this list, I’m still endorsing it as one of my favorite cases on this list, as it’s able to hold its own against cases five times more expensive.

Best (less-expensive) polycarbonate hard-side suitcase

Open Story Hardside Carry On

Material: Polycarbonate | Capacity: 43 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited ten-year warranty

Polycarbonate cases can cost upwards of $500, which is why this case from Open Story is such a rarity. It’s $170 and regularly on sale. Even at this cheaper price, you’re not sacrificing any of the features I look for in a case — the wheels are sturdy spinners, and there are plenty of well-placed, solid handles, a zipper lock, and a built-in USB port. I also know from chatting to travel blogger Courtney Vondran that it can handle many terrains — she’s taken it on “road trips throughout the Midwest, a work trip to Egypt, vacation to L.A., travel conference in Memphis, romantic getaway to Maine, and more.” You can pick it up easily (it’s on sale at Target, for example) in a small but tasteful range of colors (like a pretty Champagne). It doesn’t come with a power pack, though, and the warranty only covers ten years of limited damage and can be tricky to claim, according to some reviewers. But all in all, considering the price point, this is a solid option.

Best lightweight hard-side suitcase

Rimowa Essential Cabin Case

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 36 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Five-year manufacturer’s guarantee

The Rimowa Essential line of suitcases was a very close second to Away — more than ten people mentioned the brand in our survey of the best rolling luggage — but it lost out on the top spot due to its price. This suitcase is less durable than the classic aluminum version, but it shares a long history: Rimowa was the first brand to release a polycarbonate suitcase in 2000, so it has had more than 20 years to perfect its design. And it’s a great mix of durability and weight: This carry-on is more than a pound lighter than Away’s Bigger Carry-On.

The owners I spoke to say the wheels glide through the airport like a dream. There’s a manufacturer’s guarantee of five years if you remember to register your product when purchasing it (otherwise, it only lasts for two). Even in those five years, the warranty only applies “if the usability of the product is considerably adversely affected by a material or manufacturing fault already present at the time of hand-over (defect),” the brand says. Breaks caused by “abrasion, improper use, faulty operation, or externally occurring forces” like cracks, breaks, and scratches caused in flight are not covered. There’s a lot of fine print with Rimowa, so I suggest looking into it before you purchase.

Best aluminium hard-side suitcase

Away Carry-On Aluminum Edition

Material: Aluminum hard-shell | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Capacity: 35 liters | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Aluminum cases are as durable as a hard-side case gets — they’re less likely to crack and usually use clamps instead of a zip (which can fall apart at the seams, burst, or even be slashed open). Several travelers I chatted with recommended the Rimowa case in aluminum for this reason. However, it costs well over $1,000 and doesn’t really do much beyond what this Away — which is half the price — does. The aluminum Away carry-on is similar to the polycarbonate one in many respects, from its great-quality handles and wheels to its ample storage space. One major difference is the lock, though: It’s still TSA-approved, but has the lock code on more secure clamps rather than a zipper. Travel writer Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon , who travels every single week for work, calls it her “work horse.”

Best hard-side suitcase for overpackers

 Béis The Carry-On Roller

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: 49 - 61 L | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

I’ve included this case for its simply ingenious weight indicator. If you’re an overpacker like me, it takes a lot of the stress out of checking a bag. The indicator is activated when you lift the case, and a red mark will appear if the luggage weighs over 50 pounds — saving you from an unexpected fee at the airport. (This is especially important as the bag has an additional zipper that allows it to expand a couple of inches for squeezing an extra potentially heavy few bits inside.) Other great features include a built-in laundry and shoe bag, as well as several other pockets that help keep things organized and a TSA-approved lock. “They’ve really thought of everything,” says travel blogger Ciara Johnson.

Best hard-side suitcase set for families

Antler Clifton Set

Material: Polycarbonate hard-shell | Capacity: Three sizes | Wheels: 360-degree spinner wheels | Warranty: Lifetime

For families, a suitcase set is the most economical way to go. Antler makes one of my and Strategist senior editor Ailbhe Malone’s favorites: She’s been traveling with them for two years. “The wheels are so smooth that I can pull the suitcase with just a finger if I need to (helpful when trying to carry a folded-up stroller and a baby in a sling through an airport),” says Malone. “The grip on the handle is extremely comfortable, and it pops up easily.” As for storage, the Clifton set is designed to slot inside each other (Russian doll style), meaning “it’s easy to store three suitcases in a small house.” Malone also appreciates the various interior pockets, and mesh compartment for dirty laundry. “I recently took the medium suitcase and the cabin suitcase on a trip from London to Hungary to Romania,” says Malone. “There was enough space for everything my family needed for a week (including the baby bed linens that our Airbnb didn’t provide).”

SAFARI LUGGAGE PACKING ADVICE: What luggage should I take on safari?

We answer your safari luggage questions on what to pack your safari clothing and gear into for your safari. You will learn why 'soft' and 'squashable' are the keys to ensuring that your luggage is safari-suitable.

The majority of safari lodges are located in remote areas, with access only by light aircraft and not by airliners. This, in part, dictates the luggage to pack for your safari.

Top 7 tips for selecting the best safari luggage.

Follow our safari luggage advice to find out what luggage - large and small - you will need for your safari.

1. For your main large duffel or holdall, choose safari luggage which is soft and squashable and which has no frame : This is especially true for safari travel to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya. The reason for this is rather a practical one. The majority of safari lodges and camps within these countries are accessible only by light aircraft - such as the Cessna 210 shown on this page. As a result, in order for your pilot to fit your luggage into the small, cramped hold, your luggage must not have hard sides, nor rigid frames or structure, and should rather be soft-sided so that the pilot is able to fit (squash) your bag into the plane. The same is true for some overland and expedition-style safaris where there will be limited space for luggage in the safari 4x4.

2. Check on safari luggage limitations : Please check with the safari company you have booked with about luggage limitations for your safari, as the requirements may vary from safari to safari. Where luggage weight limitations are specified, please note that - as the maximum take-off weight in any aircraft has to be strictly adhered to by pilots to maximise your safety on each flight - you may find that your pilot will not be able to take any luggage over the maximum allowed weight per passenger. In this instance, you may have to pay for your luggage to be flown separately.

3. The ideal size for main safari luggage : We recommend that your main safari luggage holdall or duffel should measure 70 x 30 x 30cm in size when full.

4. Carry-on safari luggage : Also take one one smaller carry-on type safari bag to use when you travel - and to take your binoculars and accessories on game drives and walks.

5. Walking safaris : For safaris with a daily walking element, we recommend that you take the large safari holdall as above plus a small safari satchel or safari backpack .This may be the same bag as your carry-on safari bag also.

6. Luggage accessories : Your holdall and daypack are important - but don't forget the ever-important supporting role of smaller luggage items too. Complement your canvas and leather safari duffel bag with a classic, safari-styled toiletry bag in a range of practical designs. As you travel, our African-made canvas and leather Safari Travel Wallet keeps your passport and documents close at hand in style. It's also handy to get a travel lock in advance of your departure and to pack a luggage scale to ensure your bags are within weight limits.

7. Let a travel trolley carry the load : As you are not meant to take safari luggage with a frame, using a travel trolley which is collapsible is a good idea. Simply remove from your safari luggage when you do not need to wheel your safari luggage.

The best hard shell luggage, tested and reviewed

By Madison Flager , Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward

The best hard shell luggage tested and reviewed

Sleek, light and zippy, hardside suitcase styles are quickly becoming the norm when it comes to investing in a suitcase. The current styles on the market utilise the latest in polycarbonate, polypropylene or similar materials – sometimes recycled – to create a strong and durable yet lightweight shell, making them a breeze to lift and manoeuvre. They’re more water-resistant than softside offerings and increasingly becoming more stylish via chic colour schemes that are easily spotted on the baggage carousel.

Why choose a hard-shell suitcase?

As we mention in our guide to the best luggage brands , we prefer using a hard shell suitcase for our check-in luggage. While they tend to cost more, hard-side suitcases are designed to be more durable, offer better protection and are easier to clean than soft fabric styles. While for carry-on luggage , we prefer softside styles or hard shell luggage with outer pockets.

What to look for in a hard-shell suitcase?

  • The suitcases on this list come with the following features as standard:
  • 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Expander zippers
  • TSA-approved locks
  • Zip up compartments
  • Telescopic handles

How we choose the best hard shell suitcases

Every case on this list has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors, Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill, or our colleagues from Traveler US . We run each hard shell suitcase through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal. Below are the stand-out cases we’ve taken on our travels.

Here are some of our testing criteria:

  • How heavy or light is it when empty?
  • What is the interior like – are there useful pockets and compartments inside?
  • How much can it fit? Enough for a three-day weekend, or a weeklong trip?
  • How sturdy is the exterior? Did it scratch at all in transit?
  • How easily does it roll when full?
  • What is the handle placement like? Is it easy to pick up when placing in a car, on a train, or in the overhead compartment of a plane?
  • Is it aesthetically pleasing and well-designed?
  • Is it worth the price point?
  • Does it have any unique features that make it stand out from other luggage you’ve tried?

Hard-shell checked luggage

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  The price, removable packing divider Cons: Prone to scuffing and scratches Dimensions:  81.5 cm x 54cm x 34.5cm Weight: 5.1kg Warranty:  10-year warranty

The largest of Antler’s popular Stamford range , the large case can store the brand’s medium and cabin bags inside, making buying the set an ideal option if you’re in need of multiple sizes. As with the whole Stamford range, the case is made from sturdy polycarbonate, and features high-quality 360-degree spinner wheels. There’s plenty of room in this generous large size case, but if you need more, the expandable zip offers 5 centimetres of extra space. Inside, there are three zip-up compartments on one side, as well as a divider on the other that sits under the compression straps and is fully removable. For those who want even more organisation, the brand also has a range of packing cubes designed to fit perfectly.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  The price, the colour range Cons: ABS can be prone to scuffing Dimensions:  75cm x 47cm x 31cm Weight: 4.8kg Warranty:  10-year warranty

Our best budget hard-side luggage

This is the largest suitcase from Nere's bestselling Stori range , providing ample storage for two-week plus trips, and it’s further expandable to help you squeeze in all the souvenirs you’ve picked up throughout your travels. An ABS hard shell outer should keep belongings well-protected in the hold, and there are two additional pockets inside, as well as roomy clothing compartments. It comes in the full array of the brand’s signature pastel colours, and there are matching smaller cases – including full luggage sets – that can be stored neatly inside when not in use. A TSA lock provides extra peace of mind, as does the 10-year warranty – impressive given the very reasonable price point. If you’re looking for an inexpensive case that will see you through longer holidays, this one’s hard to beat.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Lightweight, very large, sleek appearance, plenty of colour options Cons: Scuffs easily, lighter colours show dirt quickly Dimensions: 76 x 53 x 28cm Weight:  4.7kg Warranty:  100-day trial, free repairs, limited lifetime warranty

Monos, the Vancouver-based premium luggage brand, has been winning fans with its minimal selection of duffels, backpacks and suitcases since its inception in 2019. It’s not style over substance, either: aerospace-grade polycarbonate shells and recycled elements feature wherever possible, and it's the first luggage brand to earn Climate Neutral certification, meaning it’s achieved net zero carbon emissions as a company. The brand’s largest check-in size case is a winner for our team, too. Commerce writer Charley Ward rates it as one of the best suitcases she’s ever used, thanks to its large selection of overpacker-friendly compartments, compression system and dividers, which make squeezing in yet another just-in-case outfit a breeze. The Rose Quartz colour is lovely and makes it easy to spot on the baggage carousel, but it does show scuffs quickly – the case was marked up noticeably on its first outing. If this bothers you, a cover might be a worthy investment.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  Multiple colour options, comes with a wash bag and leather luggage tag Cons: Prone to scuffing, colours sell out quickly, on the heavier side Dimensions: 73.7cm x 52.1cm x 31.8cm Weight: 5.6kg Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Trendy brand Away is probably best known for its sleek carry-on case, but its large suitcase is equally impressive. One of our writers actually  used this case when she moved countries and particularly loved the in-build compression pad, removable interior lining and the leather luggage tag that it comes with. Another clever feature worth noting is the addition of a handle underneath, allowing for easier grip when you need to lift it, plus the expandable zip that allows for an extra 4.45cm of space.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  Carbon-neutral, interior compression, unlikely to scuff, stylish design Cons: None that we can see Dimensions: 71.7cm x 46.3cm x 27.9cm Weight:  4.6kg Warranty:  10-year limited warranty

Our best eco-friendly hard shell luggage

The look of Paravel’s Aviator luggage collection alone is enough to make it a winner – a textured shell available in five different shades with contrasting leather trim, plus the option to add a monogram to the trim as well. But in addition to the aesthetic, this case is also the world’s first carbon-neutral suitcase. Not only are most of the materials recycled, from the lightweight polycarbonate to the aluminium handles, the zippers and even the vegan leather but the brand offsets all carbon emissions generated by creating and shipping the Aviator Grand to you, as well as the estimated emissions of its first trip with you.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Both sides can be fully zipped up Cons: No compression straps, handle can be temperamental Dimensions: 77.4cm x 49.5cm x 30.4cm Weight:  4.5kg Warranty:  Lifetime limited warranty

A great value case, Travelpro Maxlite’s comes with all of the classic features (TSA-approved lock, 360 degree spinner wheels), but with a few extra impressive bells and whistles as well. One clever addition is the polycarbonate hard shell has an impact absorbing finish on it (essentially a 3D-stripe texture), designed to help reduce scuffs and scratches. We also love that the interior lining is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  Secure compression panels, unlikely to scuff Cons: On the heavier side Dimensions: 68.5cm x 47cm x 29cm Weight: 5.5kg Warranty: Lifetime guarantee

With three jewel-tone shades to choose from, this Briggs & Riley looks great on the outside. Inside it’s even better, particularly if you like to stay organised with multiple pockets. On one side there are three zip-up mesh pockets – one large and two small. On the other are very clever adjustable garment compression panels. Instead of the usual zip style, these open out into two flaps and are easily secured together with two buckles, so it’s easier to fit more while still neatly securing everything in place.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  Lightweight, unlikely to scuff Cons: Expensive price, the shell will dent – although admittedly that is part of the charm Dimensions: 67cm x 45.2cm x 24.1cm Weight: 4kg Warranty: Lifetime guarantee

As part of the LVMH group, German designer luggage brand Rimowa has some of the slickest suitcases on the market. While they’re probably best known for their aluminium cases, the check-in medium case is made from an ultralight polycarbonate shell that comes in four different glossy shades and one matte. While not every traveller will be open to the high price tag, if you’re a frequent flyer looking for the best in looks and function, this is a worthy investment. As well as being one of the most durable cases on the market, it’s also the lightest hard shell check-in suitcase in our guide.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  Classic look, three-position adjustable handle Cons: Leather trim requires more maintenance to clean, no compression straps Dimensions: 76cm x 53cm x 29cm Weight:  4.6kg

If we had to pick our favourite luggage in terms of timeless looks , it would be Brics’ Bellagio range. The classic cream case with tan leather trim – even the enlarged spinner wheels are tan – is the epitome of Italian elegance. While the case looks timeless, it does feature a range of modern details, such as a water-repellant zip with a TSA-approved lock and an adjustable handle.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Super roomy, lightweight on its own, Arlo Skye carry-ons nest inside for easy storage Cons: Scuffs pretty easily Weight: 4kg Dimensions: 69 x 45 x 28cm Warranty: Five-year limited warranty

A sturdy yet lightweight case that's great for longer trips (think one to two weeks). This Arlo Skye check-in is especially great when paired with Arlo's Zipper Carry-On if you're short on storage space – the carry-on nests inside the larger case when it's empty. Inside, you'll find two even-sized compartments; one-half zips closed and has a large zippered pocket built in to secure items like hats, bathing suits, belts, or bags. The other side is secured by compression straps, but still has two smaller zippered pockets to hold undergarments or socks.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Reasonably priced, made of recycled materials, mesh storage sleeves, built-in locks Cons: Limited colours Weight: 4kg Dimensions: 68 x 40 x 30cm Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

You've likely spotted a Herschel backpack on a plane, train, or city street, but don't overlook the brand's suitcases. This medium-size roller fits a ton, Kenny says: “I packed everything I needed for a two-week trip and definitely had a little bit of room to spare. It fits a lot more than most suitcases I’ve used before. It’s very durable, doesn’t scuff too easily, and has plenty of compartments to keep clothes organised.” Its four-wheel design rolls easily and quietly, too, even when the bag is full and gliding over bumpy streets.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Compatible with Monos's leather duffel and backpacks, which slide right onto the handle of the suitcase, preventing it from bopping around as you race through an airport Cons: Scratches fairly easily Weight: 4.3kg Dimensions: 66 × 45 × 25cm Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

One of the younger brands on this list, Monos launched in 2018 with a “fewer, better” perspective and a desire to create beautiful, timeless pieces at an accessible price point. They've succeeded—global digital director Arati Menon has taken this bag to Copenhagen, London, and Italy, and is a fan of the brand's backpacks and duffels, too. Of the checked bag, she says this: “It feels light, looks great, glides like a dream, and is super functional to boot. I’m close to pulling the trigger on a matching large size.” She uses it in tandem with Monos packing cubes , and stores shoes and accessories in the bag's interior pockets. As for its durability, Menon says: “The shell has been prone to dings and scratches, but honestly, which hard shell bag isn’t?”

The best hard shell luggage tested and reviewed

Hard-shell carry-on luggage

Forgoing the checked bag life? We hear you. For those who like to travel light, look to these carry-on spinners, which have all impressed our editors in our tests. For more of our top picks, see our full guide to the best carry-on luggage .

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Multiple internal pockets, outer pocket expands, great value price Cons: 1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair Size: 56X35X23cm Weight: 3.3kg Warranty: Lifetime warranty

The zippy and lightweight Clifton cabin case is one of Antler's best sellers. The rolling polycarbonate suitcase has all that you could need for everyday travel – twist-grip handle, double lock, waterproof and mesh pockets inside – but what makes this stand out from other classic hard cases is the external soft shell front pocket. It features multiple compartments as well as a padded slip pocket that can fit a tablet or 15.6-inch laptop, allowing easy-to-reach storage for all of your on-the-go items – we like to keep our toiletries in here for easy access at security. For us at Conde Nast Traveller, it’s a go-to piece of luggage that we reach for over and over on trips away – see here for our full review .

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Won’t scuff or scratch, external zip-up pocket with padded laptop sleeve, internal compression pad, smart colour options Cons: Minimal internal pockets and zip-up compartments, can be difficult to align the closure and clasp it shut when the case is full Size: 55X38X25cm Weight : 4.3kg Warranty: 100-day trial, lifetime warranty

For a case that looks and feels like it means business, Carl Friedrik has you covered. Their carry-on case is all slick and shiny, from the studs lining the opening to the tan Italian leather handles and detailing. The snap-shut locks make this hard shell case stand out from the rest. Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments. Sophie Knight , our senior visuals editor, has taken this case on many travels, most recently to the Maldives. She rates the lock, which provides plenty of peace of mind, but overpackers beware: it does make it trickier to close if it’s full right to the brim.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Very light, very quiet, smooth action, scratch-resistant shell, good range of colours Cons: No laptop sleeve, no additional pockets inside the main compartments Dimensions: H54 x W36 x D19cm Weight: 1.8kg Warranty:  Limited lifetime warranty

Best lightweight carry-on suitcase

July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. If you struggle to manhandle your case in and out of the overhead compartments, this is the best option for you. Its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement, seriously impressed our commerce writer Charley Ward . It’s small but feels remarkably sturdy, comfortably fitting three days' worth of items inside while remaining impressively lightweight even when full. You can also see our full review of this suitcase .

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Durable, easy to manoeuvre, compression pad and straps, comes with a laundry bag, multiple colour options Cons: Colours sell out quickly, light colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, and 0.1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair Size: 55.1x34.8x22.9cm Weight: 3.2kg Warranty: Limited lifetime warranty

Away's recognisable original carry-on case is one of the best on the market – beloved by many of our editors and numerous celebrities, including Margot Robbie and Meghan Markle. We were struck by this case’s build quality, including the wheels especially, which made light work of bumpy terrain. Inside, both mesh compartments can be firmly secured – one with a zip, the other with a compression system with straps – so there is plenty of packing space and your case will remain neatly organised. It’s a bigger carry-on, with space for five to seven outfits, and is the suitcase of choice for our acting audience growth manager Abigail Malbon . Abbie zips back and forth from London to Lisbon often and rates the cases' spinner wheels, which make navigating busy airports a breeze. Need more space? The brand’s Carry-On Flex is another editor favourite – we’ve been on ski trips where we’ve packed a full weekend’s worth of gear in – then comfortably fit in a newly-bought chunky winter coat as well.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros:  External zip up pocket, removable compression pad, laundry and shoe bags Cons: Scuffs but comes with a sponge for rectifying, front pocket zipper can be difficult to manage Size: 55x35x22cm Weight : 3.5kg

Here’s Monos’s carry-on style, which has three interior pockets and three zippered pouches, along with a very handy front pocket – a game-changer for business travel, giving you somewhere to keep your laptop, documents, passports and chargers easily to hand. Amber Port , Audience Growth Manager, has this case and this feature has saved her from rummaging through the case on the airport floor many times. Inside, a removable compression pad and a zippered pocket for flat items provide a safe space for valuables. But Amber’s favourite features are the silver ion-coated laundry bag and the two shoe bags, which both let you separate different clothing items and create an easy-to-manage laundry bag once you’ve reached your destination.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Range of colours and finishes, zip up mesh screens on both sides. Cons: No compression pad, outer pocket does not expand. Size: 55X40X20cm Weight: 3.4kg

Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag. This partly recycled hardshell case has a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a textured finish add to its overall durability Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets Weight: 3.7kg Dimensions: 55 x 35 x 23cm

As with the Aviator Grand, Paravel's carry-on is beloved for more than just its retro Wes Anderson–style designs. It's made using eco-friendly materials, like recycled zippers and a lining crafted out of upcycled plastic water bottles, and comes in beautiful shades like Scout Tan and Safari Green. Inside, one half zips fully closed and has an additional zip pocket of its own, while the other is covered by a compression board. It's a favourite of US Traveler senior editor Megan Spurrell , who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean Cons: Although the beige colour is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker colour Weight: 3.8kg Dimensions: 58 x 40 x 25cm

While we've long been fans of Béis' soft-sided suitcases and weekender bags, we knew we needed to test out the popular hard-shell suitcases. Unsurprisingly, both sizes were a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. The bag itself is easy to pick up – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy to look at: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on vacation. I’d have to agree that the colour is beautiful, the size is ideal, and the ribbed exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities Cons: Mistaken identity – given their popularity, get a unique colour or add your favourite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it Weight: 3.6kg Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23cm

For a little more space when you need it, choose the Flex. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by Kramer for trips including a one-week vacation to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers Weight: 3.6kg Dimensions: 58 x 38 x 25cm

Used often by Spurrell , who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures, this bag has never let her down. She calls it surprisingly roomy, and notes its sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift Cons: Only available in a few standard colours and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours. Weight: 2.9kg Dimensions: 54 x 38 x 23cm

On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hardside carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream suitcase.”

safari hard case suitcase

Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking Cons: Not quite capacious enough Weight: 3.9kg Dimensions: 56 x 35 x 23cm

This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also a go-to of Hobbs ', who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This bag is gorgeous – beautiful contrasts between the grey of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”

Any frequent traveler knows that when you bid farewell to your bag at check-in, the likelihood of it being treated with the same care and attention you would give it is low. That's when you turn to hard shell luggage : sturdy, box-like suitcases with hard sides that are typically made of ultra-durable polycarbonate or aluminum (making them easier to clean than fabric suitcases). Hard shell checked luggage

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 11.8 lbs. Dimensions: 28" x 18" x 11" Pros: Sustainably made, rolled smoothly on uneven surfaces, textured exterior to hide scuffs Cons: Quite a bit of branding on the exterior and interior, which some may not be a fan of Among the most aesthetically pleasing on the list is Paravel's checked-size bag, the Aviator Grand. It's the rare suitcase that can call itself 100 percent carbon neutral—Paravel offsets the cost of the emissions that come from sourcing, assembly, shipping, and delivering the bag to you, as well as from your first trip (based on an average flight). The bag's materials are sourced sustainably, too: It's constructed with a recycled polycarbonate shell, recycled zippers, recycled nylon lining, and vegan leather trim. Beyond that, it's a handsome and chic bag you'll be happy to roll through the airport on that long-awaited next trip, with plenty of room inside; while testing it out, we fit two weeks worth of clothing inside, plus four pairs of shoes and a Dopp kit , and still had room to spare. Other highlights: a smooth, comfortable handle wrapped in vegan leather, carbon steel bearing wheels, and a sturdy (and easy-to-clean) nylon interior lining.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 9 lbs. Dimensions: 27" x 18" x 11"

Pros: Super roomy, lightweight on its own, Arlo Skye carry-ons nest inside for easy storage Cons: Scuffs pretty easily

A sturdy yet lightweight bag that's great for longer trips (think one to two weeks), this Arlo Skye bag is especially great when paired with Arlo's Zipper Carry-On if you're short on storage space—the carry-on nests inside the larger bag when it's empty. Inside, you'll find two even-sized compartments; one half zips closed and has a large zippered pocket built in to secure items like hats, bathing suits, belts, or purses. The other side is secured by compression straps, but still has two smaller zippered pockets to hold undergarments or socks.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 10.2 lbs. Dimensions: 28" x 18" x 11"

Pros: Luggage weight indicator, TSA-approved combination lock, sleek design, compression straps, two laundry bags, stain-resistant Cons: The beige color shows the few scuffs it left

This expandable suitcase is “by far my favorite checked bag I’ve used—specifically due to its roomy interior and smart compartments,” says associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who brought it on a nine-day trip to Italy this summer. “What I love most is the interior—pockets galore. There are two separate sides—one for stuffing as many packing cubes in as you can; that side comes with compression straps. The other side can be completely zipped and has two zippered pockets on top. It was like having two built-in packing cubes: I used one pocket to keep a wedding guest dress safe and the other for my large bottles of sunscreen—just in case anything spilled in transit. For the first time ever as an overpacker, I had room to spare. When I repacked before my flight home from Italy, I was able to fit several new shirts and souvenirs for my family and a new thick sweatshirt I bought in Florence.”

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 10.3 lbs. Dimensions: 30" x 19" x 12"

Pros: The design and chic color options, dual spinning wheels, expandable feature Cons: The size (if you tend to be a carry-on lover like myself)

Getting a carry-on-only traveler to change their ways can be difficult, but not impossible: “I tend to travel with carry-on sized luggage so that I don’t have to check my bag, so this was a bigger piece than I’m used to,” says global director of audience development Lara Kramer . “But for a road trip or big international trip, this bag is perfect. It’s as durable as some of my favorite pieces and definitely one of the prettiest to look at.” Inside, there are two large main compartments, with one that fully zips closed, as well as three other zipper compartments of varying sizes, which Kramer says are perfect for packing smaller or more delicate items.

Herschel Heritage Hardshell Medium

Weight: 9 lbs. Dimensions: 27" x 16" x 12"

Pros: Reasonably priced, made of recycled materials, mesh storage sleeves, built-in locks Cons: Limited colors (only dark, more masculine colors)

It’s very durable, doesn’t scuff too easily, and has plenty of compartments to keep clothes organized.” Its four-wheel design rolls easily and quietly, too, even when the bag is full and gliding over bumpy streets.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 9.59 lbs. Dimensions: 26.5" × 18" × 10"

Pros: Compatible with Monos's leather duffel and backpacks, which slide right onto the handle of the suitcase, preventing it from bopping around as you race through an airport Cons: Scratches fairly easily

One of the younger brands on this list, Monos launched in 2018 with a “fewer, better” perspective and a desire to create beautiful, timeless pieces at an accessible price point. They've succeeded—global digital director Arati Menon has taken this bag to Copenhagen , London, and Italy , and is a fan of the brand's backpacks and duffels , too. Of the checked bag, she says this: “It feels light, looks great, glides like a dream, and is super functional to boot. I’m close to pulling the trigger on a matching large size.” She uses it in tandem with Monos packing cubes , and stores shoes and accessories in the bag's interior pockets. As for its durability, Menon says: “The shell has been prone to dings and scratches, but honestly, which hard shell bag isn’t?”

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 10.4 lbs. Dimensions: 26" x 18" x 11"

Pros: Fits plenty of stuff, fair enough price point Cons: Middling design, susceptible to very visible scuffing

Another redesigned bag from Away: The Medium checked bag. While you could go larger with The Large or The Large Flex, this one got editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs through two weeks of travel without needing to do laundry; if you need more space, we'd recommend shifting to a trunk-style bag. Hobbs calls the bag “perfectly light” when empty, with an unassuming interior—one compartment closes, the other side is held in by compression straps. While he'd expect “a smidgeon more durability” at the price point, the bag does exactly what you want it to: rolls well, is easy to haul up and down as needed, especially with the new underside handle, and comes with both a dust bag and a laundry bag. If you own a smaller Away bag, it will nest inside this one for more compact storage.

The Best Hard Shell Luggage Tested and Reviewed

Hard shell carry-on luggage

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 8.2 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a texture finish add to its overall durability Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets

It's a favorite of Traveler senior editor Megan Spurrell , who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 8.36 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 16" x 10"

Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean Cons: Although the beige color is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker color

While we've long been fans of Béis' soft-sided suitcases and weekender bags, we knew we needed to test out the popular hard-shell suitcases ahead of luggage week. Unsurprisingly, both sizes were a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveler who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys . The bag itself is easy to pick up—“I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily”—and easy to look at: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on vacation. I’d have to agree that the color is beautiful, the size is ideal, and the ribbed exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 3.9 lbs. Dimensions: 21" x 14" × 7"

Pros: I enjoy the ease with which you can move this piece of luggage around; it feels very zippy Cons: The telescopic handle sometimes sticks

July bills itself as having the lightest carry-on in the world, and it is in fact the lightest our team has found at just under four pounds when empty. Tested by research director Alexandra Sanidad , the bag “can fit a week’s worth of clothing if you pack lightly, or a weekend’s worth if you’re bringing multiple day and night outfits.” It has two evenly-sized compartments inside, and is very easy to roll and navigate around obstacles on the ground like puddles and trash, Sanidad says. Order it in one of six classic colors or two limited-edition colors, and know that you can personalize it with your initials, or your pet's face (yep, you read that right).

A suitcase.

Weight: 7.9 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 15" x 9"

Pros: Durable wheels, easy to lift, compression straps Cons: Because of its size, it may be checked on smaller planes or flagged to be checked on planes at full capacity

Recently redesigned with an upgraded interior compression system, Away's The Bigger Carry-On is great for travelers looking to stretch the limits of what a carry-on can usually handle. Senior commerce editor, Madison Flager has used the brand's previous iteration for years, packing it on trips as long as 11 days. Editorial assistant Jessica Chapel tested out the newer model, and appreciated its durable wheels, new underside grab handle, and multiple interior compartments.

A suitecase.

Weight: 8.15 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities Cons: Mistaken identity—given their popularity, get a unique color or add your favorite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it

For a little more space when you need it, choose the Flex. It gives travelers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by Kramer for trips including a one-week vacation to London , it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 8.1 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 15" x 10"

Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers

Used often by Spurrell , who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures, this bag has never let her down. She calls it surprisingly roomy, and notes its sturdy shell: “This bag looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 6.06 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Pros: Great for organization, stylish, secure Cons: Overall storage is on the smaller side

This suitcase was called “an organizer's dream” by frequent traveler Katie Thompson, thanks to the zip pockets and mesh nets that give every item its own place. Light packers can fit a week's worth of clothing inside comfortably, but it's probably best suited for weekend trips. It rolls easily and in all directions, and the built in patterns on the exterior help to hide any scratches. Overall, it is “sleek, unique, and compact,” though overall storage is on the smaller side.

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 6.53 lbs. Dimensions: 21.5" x 15" x 9"

Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift Cons: Only available in a few standard colors and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours.

On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hardside carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream bag.”

safari hard case suitcase

Weight: 8.6 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9"

Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking Cons: Not quite capacious enough

This particular designer bag may ring a bell for Succession fans—Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also a go-to of Hobbs ', who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This bag is gorgeous—beautiful contrasts between the gray of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”

Whether you're a frequent flier or an occasional jet-setter, you'll always be glad to have sturdy, dependable luggage that safeguards your belongings. With a rigid frame, the hardside variety helps prevent things from breaking or crushing. It can also be easier to wipe clean than a softside design and has a sleek, modern appeal.

If you want the crème de la crème of hardside suitcases, you've come to the right place. But what makes a top-notch model? Besides a high-strength exterior that protects your stuff and withstands wear and tear, it's about maneuverability, capacity, standout features, and, yes, style.

The Travel + Leisure team tested more than 250 pieces of luggage, including checked bags and carry-ons, to see which ones stack up. We packed the suitcases with clothes, shoes, and toiletries, took them around for a spin, shoved them off tables, and gave them a few good whacks with a baseball bat. We also recreated an airplane set in our lab to lift carry-on suitcases into overhead bins, place them underneath seats, and roll them down carpeted aisles. Following our lab assessments, we will continue testing all bags in real-life settings over a six-month period. These are our favorite hardside suitcases.

Best Overall

Samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Earning perfect scores across the board, this standout suitcase is compact yet spacious, with a high-strength thermoplastic shell and smooth-gliding wheels.

It doesn't have a laundry bag or any smart features.

We tried dozens of suitcases, and while many are worth considering, the Freeform Spinner was an all-around favorite. Earning perfect ratings in every testing category, this hardside carry-on is lightweight and compact but also spacious enough to fit everything you need for a four-day getaway. It expands if you need extra wiggle room, though we were able to pack everything on our packing test list without this feature. While there are multiple pockets in the main compartment and a separator for dirty shoes, we wish it had a removable laundry bag.

We're big fans of the minimalist-modern design, which is available in more than 12 colors ranging from sage to lilac to everyday neutrals. After smacking the Freeform Spinner with a bat during testing, the polycarbonate (high-strength thermoplastic) exterior was free of scuffs, scratches, and dents. We wouldn't worry about spilling a drink on it or accidentally dragging it through a puddle either.

This suitcase is a breeze to maneuver on two wheels or four, and it glides smoothly on both hard floors and carpets. The expandable, lockable aluminum handle feels sturdy, too. Considering the accessible price point, reliable construction, and smooth-rolling wheels, we'd recommend Samsonite’s Freeform Spinner to frequent fliers and anyone in the market for a durable carry-on.

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

This affordable carry-on is lightweight yet sturdy, with a scratch-resistant exterior and an unexpectedly spacious capacity.

There are limited color options, and it doesn't have any smart features or a TSA lock.

For something a little easier on your wallet, look no further than Amazon. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner has an extra-thick thermoplastic shell that promises to protect your belongings and resist scratches. We're pleased to report it showed no signs of damage from our bat hits and drop tests. It's easy to maneuver, even on carpeted flooring and over bumps.

We could fit every last item on our packing list, including shoes, clothes, jackets, and toiletries. There's also an expander that increases the capacity by 15 percent. This wasn't necessary for our test, but we appreciate that there's room to spare. Although this affordable carry-on suitcase doesn't have smart features or a TSA lock, it really exceeded our expectations. We'd love a few more color options but like the pared-down appearance.

Watch How We Test Luggage

Best built-in compression, away the carry-on flex.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5

This compact bag holds a lot thanks to its compression straps, zippers, and an expansion feature.

The flex feature adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, but it also makes the bag too large to qualify as a carry-on.

This Away bag has a surprising amount of space for a carry-on, with two large interior compartments (one on each side), compression straps, and dividers that keep your clothing from falling out when you open the bag (everything stayed in place even after we threw the bag multiple times off a table). While we were packing the bag during our lab tests, we loved how all of the interior zippers and pockets helped keep everything organized, allowing us to maximize space even without packing cubes. There is also a handy zipper expansion that adds an extra 2.25 inches of space, which is useful, but it does make the bag too large to use as a carry-on, and you’ll be forced to check it. Even when packed full, the zippers all ran smoothly, and we found it easy to maneuver the luggage over concrete tiles, carpet, and around our obstacle course full of bystanders. The wheels rotated smoothly throughout testing, and the bag will even roll on its own without getting stuck if you give it a shove.

The Details: 8.15 pounds | 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches | 39.8-liter capacity; 46.7-liter capacity when expanded | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Carry-on

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 21-inch spinner.

The Chatelet Air 2.0 is super functional and durable — plus, it's a sight for sore eyes.

Since it's not expandable, it's best for short trips or strategic packers.

Delsey's Chatelet Air 2.0 is our favorite hardside carry-on. The compact yet spacious design features a zippered compartment on one side and compression straps on the other. While it doesn't expand, you can fit a decent amount of stuff inside and have peace of mind knowing everything will stay in place. We also like that there are multiple interior pockets and a USB port you can hook up to a portable charger .

Even when packed full, the zippers open and close smoothly. And the four dual-spinner wheels glide effortlessly across hard flooring, carpet, and even stone pavers. This suitcase also passed our durability test with flying colors, sustaining no visible damage when we hit it with a bat and shoved it off a table. During three months of travels, we even checked this carry-on for two different international flights and it still looks perfect after just a bit of cleaning.

The Details: 7.74 pounds | 22.75 x 15 x 10 inches | 44-liter capacity | Smart | 4 dual spinner wheels

Best Checked

Samsonite winfield 2 hardside.

The Winfield 2 seems nearly impossible to damage, plus it's spacious and super easy to maneuver on various surfaces — even gravel.

It doesn't have any smart features and weighs 11.5 pounds when empty.

If you're in the market for checked luggage , the Samsonite Winfield 2 might be your best bet. The polycarbonate shell took our hits, shoves, and drops like a pro, looking just as glossy and scratch-free after the test as when we pulled it out of the packaging. We're big fans of the expandable design; compression system; and zippered divider, which you can use to separate your shoes or clean and dirty clothes. Even when stuffed full, this hardside suitcase maintained its shape and size.

The Winfield 2 was easy to maneuver on two or four wheels and even performed well on carpet and gravel. The handles will also come in handy when grabbing it from baggage claim or lifting it into a car. All things considered, this no-nonsense spinner bag is an excellent choice for overpackers and international trips .

The Details: 11.5 pounds | 31.5 x 20.5 x 13 inches | Expandable | 4 wheels

Best Lightweight Carry-on

Samsonite omni pc carry-on.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.8 /5

The Samsonite Omni PC is just over six pounds, with an expandable capacity and a rigid exterior that won't dent or scratch.

The wheels can get caught in ruts, and it rolls a little better on two wheels than on four.

This lightweight carry-on weighed in at just 6.1 pounds and fit snugly into an overhead compartment. The dual compartments, pockets, and cross straps make it easy to pack and organize your stuff. There's also an expander if you need extra space. After whacking it with a bat, we can confirm its scratch-resistant, dent-defying durability.

This suitcase rolls smoothly and turns on a dime. And stuffing it full doesn't seem to make it any harder to maneuver. Having said that, the small wheels sometimes get stuck in grooves, and it's not as easy to push as most spinners. Still, we think the price is sharp and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to overpackers, frequent fliers, and anyone who doesn't want to worry about premature wear and tear.

The Details: 6.1 pounds | 22 x 15 x 9.5 inches | Expandable | 4 wheels

Best Lightweight Checked

July checked plus light.

This 105-liter suitcase holds a ton while weighing in at under 10 pounds, so it won’t add unnecessary bulk.

The luggage is not expandable.

Hardside bags can get heavy quickly, so we always appreciate when we can find a checked hardside that weighs under 10 pounds. The July Checked Plus Light feels very lightweight for its size and features a curved eggshell design that maximizes space and keeps it durable. Even though this bag is large, it felt slimmer and more compact than some Away checked bags we tested because of the shape while still feeling spacious inside with a generous 105-liter capacity. We also liked how the interior pockets and straps helped keep things in place so smaller items don’t get lost in the larger bag. This suitcase did not dent at all after we hit it several times with a baseball bat during testing, and this particular style of July luggage did not scuff as much as some of the other July models when we threw it off of a counter fully packed, proving its durability. We also like how you can adjust the handle to any height you want, making it comfortable to carry whether you want to glide it on two or four wheels.

The Details: 9.2 pounds | 30.32 x 20.87 x 11.22 inches | 105-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus

  • Durability 4.5 /5

This suitcase has an attractive, vintage-inspired aesthetic, plus modern features for easy packing and organization.

Though it doesn't expand, it's one of the larger carry-ons we tried.

The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus boasts a sophisticated, vintage-inspired aesthetic and modern features. Available in versatile neutrals and statement colorways, it has a polycarbonate shell with contrasting vegan leather accents. The exterior proved durable during our tests, showing only a few minor scuffs, which may not be as noticeable on the darker colors.

Though it doesn't expand, this is one of the larger carry-on suitcases we tried. It has excellent capacity with zippered compartments and a compression pad, allowing us to easily fit all items on our packing list. We also like that it comes with a laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate. Not only that, but it was a piece of cake to maneuver on different types of flooring and around tight corners.

The Details: 8.5 pounds | 23 x 15 x 9.5 inches | 46.6-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Away The Trunk

This 107-liter trunk is extremely spacious, with a slimmer top lid and a deeper main compartment.

Make sure you pack the bag evenly on each side, otherwise it can feel lopsided.

A trunk is a stylish alternative to your typical clamshell suitcase — instead of splitting evenly down the middle, it has a 30/70 design with a thinner top half and a deeper main compartment. This is useful if you have any large or bulky items, making it easier to fit everything inside the spacious checked bag. We put the trunk to the test, gliding it through our obstacle course full of people and found that it maneuvers much smoother than a regular checked bag because of the taller rectangle shape. The trunk is surprisingly lightweight for its large size, but we did notice that it felt a little heavier on one side because of the way we packed it, so we recommend distributing your items evenly on each side so that it doesn’t feel lopsided. This was also the most durable piece of Away luggage we tested, surviving our table drops and baseball bat beating with nearly a scuff or scratch. Bonus points for the included sponge that you can use to wipe off any scuffs.

The Details: 12.1 pounds | 31.3 x 17 x 13.7 inches | 107-liter capacity | 4 dual spinner wheels

Most Durable

Roam the check-in.

  • Capacity 4 /5

Backed by a lifetime warranty, this suitcase has an extremely resilient shell, water-repellent zippers, and a customizable colorblock design.

It's somewhat small for checked luggage.

When it comes to durability, the Roam Check-in is tough to beat. The rigid polycarbonate shell looks and feels sturdy, and it sustained exactly zero nicks, scuffs, or dents during our tests. For even more peace of mind, the exterior zippers are water-repellent — perfect if you're packing for a trip to London or any potentially rainy location. It's on the smaller side for checked luggage, but the expander gives you an extra couple of inches. While we were able to fit all the essentials for a four-day vacation, we would have appreciated a bit more space.

This midsize suitcase was easy to move around — even on gravel — and the handles come in handy when lifting it. The color block design is cool but not over the top and makes for a great way to spot your luggage at baggage claim . You can customize it if you're not a fan of the pre-curated colors or just want something entirely unique. It's definitely one of the more expensive options, but Roam backs it with a lifetime warranty.

Best for Staying Organized

Béis large check-in roller.

This checked suitcase has an enormous capacity, and zippered compartments, pockets, and even removable pouches for easy packing.

It's durable, but the exterior is prone to scuffing.

This checked suitcase is one of the biggest we tested. There was easily enough room for double the amount of stuff on our packing list — and that's without the expander, which adds another three inches to the depth. Beyond the enormous 112-liter capacity, the internal pockets and removable pouches helped us keep things organized, while the zippered compartment and compression straps ensured everything stayed in place. It also comes with a laundry bag for keeping your dirty clothes separated while you're away and a retractable strap to make carrying another piece of luggage easier . We did notice, over three months of testing, that the downside to the large size and helpful organizational features is that it's easy to overpack, leading to overweight luggage fees.

Considering how big this suitcase is, the smooth spinner wheels and padded handle make it super comfortable to maneuver. While this bag passed our durability tests without any dents or scratches, it scuffs pretty easily. However, the darker colors should conceal marks better, and you can wipe down the exterior to remove any scuffs as needed.

The Details: 11.5 pounds | 31.3 x 19.6 x 12.6 inches | 112-liter capacity | Expandable | 4 spinner wheels

Best Splurge

Rimowa original cabin.

Backed by a lifetime guarantee, this futuristic suitcase is impressively spacious, with a durable aluminum exterior and smooth-rolling wheels.

It's not expandable, and the metallic exterior is prone to scuffs.

If you can swing the steep price, the Rimowa Original Cabin is a worthwhile investment. Though it doesn't expand, this suitcase meets carry-on size limits for most airlines while still offering an impressive amount of interior space. We packed it for a four-day trip and easily fit several outfits, outerwear, and multiple pairs of shoes inside. Not only that, but the dividers help ensure everything stays securely in place.

Thanks to the smooth-gliding spinner wheels, we had no issue rolling this bag over hard floors, carpet, pavement, and even cobblestone. We can't say it's the lightest carry-on, but it's not super heavy, either. We could hoist it into an overhead compartment and lift it into a car when packed full. Our favorite thing about this suitcase might be the slick, futuristic design and high-end appearance. It's remarkably durable, too, sustaining zero damage during our in-cabin travel test. The brand backs the suitcase with a lifetime guarantee, but make sure to register your luggage as soon as you pull it out of the packaging.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

This checked suitcase has a crack-resistant shell and a spacious capacity with an expander that adds two inches to the depth.

It weighs a little over 12 pounds, and the large size makes it easy to go over the weight limit.

The Check-in Hardside Spinner from Travelpro's Platinum Elite line is nice and spacious, with an expansion zipper that adds a full two inches to the depth. We had no problem fitting the entire packing list and felt like there was room to spare. They liked how the zipper panels and cross straps kept everything in place when they opened and closed it.

This large, 108-liter suitcase has an ultra-strong polycarbonate shell that resists cracking and crushing. After pushing it off a table and hitting it a few times with a bat, we noticed only a few superficial marks — no dents and nothing that wouldn't wipe off. It also rolls smoothly over carpet, bumps, and even gravel. We think the price is a good value considering the generous size, high-quality design, and five-year warranty.

We selected over 250 pieces of luggage based on extensive market research, then tested them in our New York City lab and on our airplane set to assess their durability, capacity, maneuverability, design, and overall value. In line with the size of each bag, we packed them with enough essentials for a multi-day trip, including pants, shirts, underwear, socks, shoes, jackets, and toiletries, paying special attention to organizational features. We threw the bags off tables and hit the with baseball bats to test durability, ran them over different surfaces and through obstacle courses to test maneuverability, and lifted them into overhead bins to see how lightweight they felt. After evaluating the suitcases in the lab, we continued testing them in real-life settings over an ongoing six-month period.

Other Hardside Luggage We Liked

These bags did not make our list of recommendations yet still stood out from the pack. They all had positive attributes, but a few things held them back.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Out Of Bounds 28-inch Lightweight Durable Hardshell : This is a stylish, spacious suitcase at a fantastic price. The only thing that kept it from the winners list here is that it did not roll as well on gravel as some others.

Béis The Carry-on Roller : We love the organizational features and sophisticated look of this bag. If it rolled just a tiny bit better it would be up on our winners list.

July Carry-on Pro : Testers really liked this bag, especially the standout maneuverability and good looks. The only real knock on it was that the compression straps could be a little tighter.

Delsey Paris Chatelet Air 2.0 International Carry-on : This suitcase is conveniently compact, lightweight, and easy to maneuver. However, we found it to be too small for most trips, and the zippers are hard to close when it's packed full.

Tips for Buying Hardside Luggage

Remember durability is key.

Hardside luggage is about more than a sleek, modern appearance — though this is a welcome bonus. Suitcases with rigid shells are typically made of polycarbonate, a high-strength thermoplastic. This helps protect your belongings from impact, whether your belongings include a formal suit , a robust makeup collection , wine bottles, or camera equipment.

In addition to preventing things from crushing or breaking, hardside luggage is also easy to wipe clean. Having said that, lighter colors and matte finishes are sometimes prone to scuffing.

Don't overlook the interior and organizational features

When browsing options, don't overlook the interior. A suitcase should ideally have a spacious capacity, even if it's a relatively compact carry-on. Organizational features can make packing and accessing everything much easier, too, in addition to using packing cubes . This might include dual main compartments, dividers, zippered sections, a compression panel, various pockets, a shoe separator, a laptop sleeve, a garment sleeve, or a removable laundry bag.

Look for a lightweight design with good maneuverability

We also recommend looking for lightweight luggage, especially when carrying on. Note the empty weight before buying a hardside suitcase, as heavier models can make it harder to lift and roll when packed full. In terms of maneuverability, four spinner wheels are ideal. A locking telescoping handle will make pushing and pulling a jam-packed suitcase more comfortable. And grab handles will make it easier to lift into an overhead bin.

Hardside suitcases are the gold standard for many travelers. Besides the contemporary appearance, lots of folks appreciate how they protect what's inside. However, after testing more than 250 total pieces of luggage, we can tell you that a rigid shell doesn't always point to superior durability. Softside models are often just as resilient, and they tend to be more flexible if you need to stuff more items inside. While textile exteriors can be difficult to keep clean, they typically don't scuff as easily.

As noted, rigid suitcases can scuff, especially lighter colors and matte finishes. But they're generally very easy to clean . You can gently polish a suitcase with mild soap and water or a luggage-specific cleaning spray. If you're on the go or short on time, you can wipe it down with a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe or even a window-cleaning towelette.

Suitcase linings are sometimes removable and machine-washable. If not, you can likely wipe it down just as you would the outside, then leave it open so it can air-dry thoroughly. When in doubt, check the brand's care instructions.

Most hardside suitcases are made from sturdy plastic of polycarbonate that may scuff but shouldn't crack. Some hardside luggage — especially those made from less expensive materials — can crack over time, but durable bags should stand up to your travels. Many luggage brands now offer limited or lifetime warranties on their bags, so be sure to read their policies before buying if you're worried about potential damage.

Hardside or hardshell luggage is made of plastic or metal materials that hold their shape to encase and protect your belongings. At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we evaluate hardside luggage in the Textiles Lab, analyzing them for factors like durability, water resistance and ease of use. Plus, we share them with consumer testers who take them on their own trips and share real-world feedback. We've put together a list of picks including lightweight and durable options and hard cases with unique features that we think are worth your buying.

At the end of this guide, you can read more about how we evaluate luggage in our Lab and our consumer tester process — plus everything you need to know about shopping for hardside luggage.

Samsonite's high-quality luggage has continued to perform well in our tests over the years , specifically in terms of durability and ease of use. The brand's Freeform hardside suitcase is a favorite of our consumer testers who agree that its wheels roll smoothly and that the bag is easy to maneuver around twists and turns. It also received perfect scores in Lab tests for being a breeze to open and close.

Inside, you'll find a zippered panel and an adjustable cross strap to keep your belongings in place, and we fit our entire packing load in the bag with room to spare. Our consumer testers did point out that the carrying handles are on the smaller side, but they still thought the bag was easy to pick up. There are three different sizes to choose from, or you can buy a set including a carry-on and a checked bag.

With more than 31,000 five-star reviews and a 4.6-star average rating, Amazon Basics' hardside luggage is a favorite of real users and GH analysts alike. When we tested this bag in our Lab, we found it to be spacious, and it received perfect scores for easy packing. Online reviewers agree, adding that they can fill the suitcase with more than enough clothing and essentials for their trips.

The suitcase is made with ABS plastic, which isn't as durable as some other hard materials, but it is lightweight and keeps the price low. Testers appreciated the luggage's wheel performance, sharing that the bag is easy to maneuver, but they found the telescopic handle to be flimsier than other models they tried. This suitcase comes in three different sizes and is available in two and three-piece sets for an even better value.

Several of our Lab experts have been using Away luggage for years and have found them to stand the test of time. T his pick is made of polycarbonate material, which means it's lightweight yet durable. In our testing, we dropped it repeatedly from a 3-foot height, and there were no major signs of damage.

Our consumer testers thought the wheels on Away suitcases rolled smoothly and found they were easy to maneuver, but the handle isn't as sturdy as some other styles. In our packing tests, we were impressed by the compressive panels meant to keep your belongings in place and by the hidden laundry bag you can use to separate your dirty clothes. If you use the suitcase and decide it isn't right for you, the brand offers a 100-day return policy for any reason.

One of the top performers in our Textiles Lab evaluations, the hardside spinner from Open Story at Target is available for an incredible value. The carry-on model is loaded with useful features like a built-in USB port to charge your phone (battery not included), a removable laundry bag to keep your dirty clothes separated and three internal mesh pockets for organization.

Our testers loved the bag's modern look and trendy color options. They also appreciated that the TSA-approved lock is embedded at the top of the suitcase for easier access instead of on the side. When we put the bag through our repeated drop testing in our Lab, the polycarbonate didn't dent or show major signs of damage, but the hardside material did show some marks in our scratch test.

For luggage that's equally fashionable and functional, Calpak's Ambeur suitcases are a great option. The hardshell bags are made with a blend of ABS plastic and polycarbonate that's both lightweight and durable, but we did find the metallic colors scuffed easily. In Lab evaluations, the luggage was dubbed our "tester favorite" because consumer testers were so wowed by the design and ease of use.

The telescopic handles aced our tests, with one tester sharing that it was the "smoothest handle by far" out of all of the bags available for testing. Other testers agreed, explaining that the padded handles were comfortable to lift, pull and push. Plus, the Ambeur luggage aced our packing tests. If you don't need a set of three bags, you can opt for a two-piece set or choose from any of the five styles available.

Travelpro designs luggage for frequent travelers and primarily offers soft fabric luggage, but the brand does have a few hardside pieces including the Maxlite Spinner. This bag has a roomy luggage compartment with two zippered panels, and it can be expanded by 2 inches, lending you extra room for all of your souvenirs on the trip home.

In our Lab tests, Travelpro bags were easy to fill with a full load of clothing and travel gear like toiletries and shoes. They also performed well and earned high durability ratings. Testers loved the cushioned telescopic handles which lock at two different heights. We did find the carrying handles to be on the tighter side, which can make the bag difficult to lift into an overhead bin.

Heys Fashion Spinner 30"

For a fun suitcase that's easy to spot on an airport luggage carousel , try one of Heys' Fashion Spinners. Choose from cute character designs, trendy animal prints, watercolor scenes and bold graphic patterns.

The brand's suitcases are made of a polycarbonate and ABS plastic composite — primarily ABS with a polycarbonate coating for protection. They weren't the most durable in our evaluations and showed some scratches in our tests, but they earned high scores for ease of use. The bag's interior is filled with organizational pockets and compression panels to easily pack all of your belongings. One GH analyst who has owned a Fashion Spinner set for over a decade said the long-lasting bags were spacious and could fit everything needed for a trip, even before using the zippered expansion system.

Rimowa only makes hardside luggage, and it's a cutting-edge brand that continues to impress our Textiles Lab experts . The Original line is made with aluminum, which is more durable than other hard materials like ABS plastic and polycarbonate. This style of suitcase features the brand's iconic grooved design and has a zipperless closure, opting for locking latches instead — TSA-approved, of course.

When you open the suitcase, you'll find two spacious packing compartments and two adjustable compression panels to keep your belongings in place. Rimowa's suitcases are much more expensive than other brands, but they are among the best in our tests with high ratings for packing space, durability and maneuverability.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Hardside International Spinner Luggage

This innovative suitcase from Briggs & Riley is full of features to make packing for an international trip easier. On the outside of t he hardside suitcase is an easy-access pocket for your phone and ID. The bag unzips into one large packing space that's fully lined and contains three zip pockets for easy organization. Plus, the bag utilizes Briggs & Riley's unique expansion system, which allows you to expand the bag for additional packing space and then compress it to its standard size once the bag has been filled — with just the push of a button. Our testers recently tried a softside bag from the brand with the same system and were blown away by how much they could fit inside, sharing that there was way more room than expected.

When we tested Briggs & Riley's hardside suitcases in the Textiles Lab, they performed well, receiving high scores for durability, water resistance and ease of use. Testers also shared that the brand's bags were easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and said the telescopic handles were sturdy. Although we didn't experience this issue, some online reviewers have shared that the zipper pulls are prone to breaking with regular use.

Monos' less-is-more approach to design results in a sleek, timeless look that our testers love. The durable polycarbonate luggage may have a simple appearance but doesn't skimp on quality or useful packing features. Inside, you'll find two spacious compartments: one zipper-enclosed compartment and one with an adjustable compression panel. There are also additional zipper pockets inside for even more organized storage space.

The large checked version of this bag was a GH 2023 Family Travel Awards recipient. It aced our durability tests, resisting major dents and damages after being dropped repeatedly from a 3-foot height, but it did show some signs of wear in our scratch tests. When testers tried it in our luggage obstacle course, they were impressed by how easy the bag was to maneuver and how smoothly the spinner wheels rolled around twists and turns. The brand offers sets for an even better value and a generous 100-day return policy.

Victorinox Airox Large Hardside Case

Airox Large Hardside Case

Most large "lightweight" hardshell luggage still weighs at least 10.5 lbs, but this pick from Victorinox is just 9 lbs. We love the unique "butterfly open" interior, which allows you to fold the divider panels out of the way for easy access to the main compartments.

Although we haven't tested this particular bag in the Lab, we have tested many other bags from Victorinox that have received perfect scores in our durability tests and have been rated highly for ease of use. This bag is made of the same polycarbonate material and is designed with many of the same features as the bags we've tested, though you may notice the unique design of the telescopic handle. It's a T-shape which helps keep the weight down, but it does make it less comfortable to pull long distances.

How we test luggage

linebreak

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test luggage using specialized equipment in our Textiles Lab and with consumer testers . When we review luggage, we consider these factors:

✔️ Size and weight: In the Lab, we measure the size and weight of each suitcase to ensure that all online size claims are accurate. We place carry-on bags in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to see if they meet TSA size requirements.

✔️ Extra features: We make note of any additional features or components that make the luggage stand out, like carrying handles, built-in locks and telescopic handles that adjust to different heights.

textiles lab director lexie sachs opens a suitcase as a part of luggage testing

✔️ Ease of use: We rate how easy it is to zip and unzip each piece of luggage (pictured here) and consider the accessibility of any packing compartments. We also consider features like telescopic handles and wheels.

After packing each bag, we roll it over different surfaces including tile, carpet and hardwood and test the carrying handles by lifting the bag onto a countertop.

✔️ Packing: We fill each bag with a standard packing load for a two-night trip including clothing, accessories and toiletries (picture here) and then score the suitcases based on how much they're able to hold.

✔️ Drop testing: Each piece of luggage is filled with a standard weight and dropped from a 3-foot height from different angles to mimic real use (pictured here). We then analyze the luggage for signs of damage like dents or cracks.

✔️ Consumer testing: Consumer testers take part in our obstacle course that involves rolling the bags over different surfaces like carpet, tile and wood flooring (pictured here), lifting the bags, maneuvering the bags around cones and more. They also share their thoughts on properties like ease of use, sturdiness of the handles and wheel performance.

We share suitcases with testers who are able to take the bags on their own trips and provide us with real-world feedback about their experiences.

What to look for when shopping for the best hardside luggage

linebreak

When shopping for a hardside suitcase, here are a few things to keep in mind:

✔️ Material: Not all hardside suitcases are made from the same hard material, and the material can impact performance, weight and price. These are the most common:

  • Aluminum is the most durable material for hardside luggage, but it's much heavier than other options and can be pretty expensive.
  • Polycarbonate is the most popular material for hard luggage. It is both lightweight and durable, but it can scratch easily.
  • ABS is a plastic material that is more affordable and even more lightweight than polycarbonate, but it is a bit less durable.
  • Polypropylene is another type of plastic that is even lighter than and slightly stronger than ABS plastic. It's fairly durable and affordable, as well.
  • A composite or mixture of polycarbonate, ABS and/or polypropylene combines aspects of each material. Most composite suitcases are made with an ABS base coated in polycarbonate material. This adds extra durability, but it still isn't quite as durable as a suitcase made of 100% polycarbonate.

✔️ Wheels: Wheels with 360° spin receive the best maneuverability scores in our Lab tests and with consumer testers. These wheels allow the luggage to rotate fully and move side to side in addition to moving straight ahead.

✔️ Handles: There are two types of handles you should consider: telescopic handles and carrying handles. Telescopic handles extend from the suitcase so you can push and pull the bag around. Check to see if the handle is easy to open and close, whether or not it can be adjusted and if it's padded for comfort. If you're going to be lifting and lowering your bag often, make sure the side and top carrying handles are large enough for you to easily grip them.

✔️ Compartments: Internal compartments aren't necessary, but they can be helpful when it comes to packing and securing your belongings. Interior pockets are often made with mesh panels to allow your belongings to breathe and to help you see what's inside. There are zip pockets to hold extra belongings and zip panels to keep clothing separated inside the suitcase – so you can keep your running shoes away from your nice dress. Some hardside suitcases also come with removable compartments like a laundry bag to contain dirty clothes or a garment bag to hang clothing.

✔️ Returns and warranties: Luggage warranties tend to only cover manufacturer defects, which can often be difficult to prove. If you're worried about spending money on luggage you won't love, opt for a brand that offers a trial period or generous return policy so that you can test the bag before committing, especially if you're shopping online without seeing it in person first.
