FAQ About Travel Insurance to Nepal

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for travel to Egypt. This means that as a traveller to Egypt, you must provide valid travel insurance coverage for the entire duration of your stay. If you don't arrive with travel insurance, you risk being denied entry into Egypt, or even deported in certain cases.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. CAN YOU CANCEL YOUR TRIP FOR ANY REASON?

Nepal travel insurance FAQs

Is it worth buying travel insurance for trekking in nepal.

Nepal travel insurance protects you financially against lost or stolen luggage, medical emergencies and evacuations, and trip cancellations or interruptions. You can even opt for “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage, or CFAR, to guarantee more flexibility. With travel being expensive these days, having the right policy can reimburse your travel costs should an unforeseen event interfere with your vacation, saving you from a significant financial loss. In medical emergencies, trip insurance provides crucial assistance, including coordinating medical evacuations and airlifts and admitting you to hospitals meeting US standards. The best travel insurance policy gives you peace of mind and will prove worthwhile for Nepal. In addition, depending on your age, most plans only cost approximately 2-3% of your total trip cost, making it highly affordable.

When should I buy Nepal travel insurance?

To get the most from your coverage, we recommend purchasing Nepal travel insurance, especially a Trip Cancellation plan, immediately after you book your vacation. This will ensure that you and any of your insured travel companions are protected against unexpected events prior to and during your trip. Remember that if you want a “Cancel for Any Reason” (CFAR) or Pre-Existing Condition optional upgrade, you must buy them within 14-21 days of paying the deposit on your vacation. Please verify with your preferred insurance provider for their specific requirements.

How many people can my Nepal travel insurance cover?

This depends on several factors, but all travelers wishing to be insured on the same plan must have the same travel dates and itineraries and reside in the same US state. The maximum number of people for Single Trip policies is 10. Any one of your travel companions who has a different travel itinerary to you or lives in another state must get their own policy. If 8 or more of you are traveling together, consider looking into group policies, as they are often cheaper and do not require that all travelers have the same itinerary or live in the same state. The only stipulation is that everyone must be US residents, and you still get the same dynamic coverage that you would get with a standard travel insurance plan.

Where can I find the cheapest Nepal travel insurance?

Instead of seeking the cheapest Nepal travel insurance, look for the one that best meets your coverage needs. First, use a comparison site like WithFaye.com to narrow down all policies that fit your criteria. Then, you can click the option to sort by price and choose the most affordable policy.

Do Nepal travel insurance plans cover a relative’s death?

This varies between policies. Many cheaper Nepal travel insurance plans will not offer bereavement benefits if your relative passes away from a pre-existing medical condition or commits suicide. However, some plans with higher premiums may reimburse you no matter your relative’s cause of death. Lastly, you’ll want to find out what each provider considers a “relative” to be. Does that include your siblings? Aunts and uncles? Grandparents? Cousins? Pets? Every insurer has different terms, so to be on the safe side, read the full details of any policy before buying it and follow up with the insurer should you have any lingering questions.

How do insurers define baggage loss? What does that benefit cover?

Baggage loss coverage is a complex topic. Baggage loss benefits ensure that if your baggage or personal effects get stolen, damaged, lost or destroyed during your time in Nepal or traveling to and from there, your provider will reimburse you up to the Maximum Benefit Amount listed in your policy. This even covers when your bags are checked with a hotel, common carrier or travel supplier. Of course, in such instances, the amount your travel insurance provider would reimburse you would be reduced by the amount the responsible party owes you. All travel insurance plans state Maximum Benefit Limits on a per-person basis, and it denotes the highest total your insurer will reimburse you for stolen, lost or damaged luggage. The total per-person reimbursement is also calculated based on the Per Article Benefit. This is the maximum amount your provider will reimburse you for each lost, stolen or damaged item during your travels. However, there is something called a Combined Article Limit for items such as watches, furs, jewelry, electronic devices and more. Therefore, should you lose one or more of these specific items, the most your insurer will reimburse you for all of them is the amount stated in your policy as the Combined Article Limit, even if their value exceeds it. The good news is that depending on your state of residence, your Nepal travel insurance plan may not have such restrictions. To better understand this, let’s imagine that your policy has a $2,500 Maximum Benefit Limit, a $500 Per Article Benefit and a $750 Per Article Limit. If your suitcase gets lost, your insurer will reimburse you depending on each item’s real value, but never more than your $500 Per Article Benefit. So, as a result, if there was a $1,000 coat in your lost suitcase, you will only get back $500, even if you haven’t reached your policy’s Maximum Benefit Limit. Let’s imagine you lose 2 items listed in your policy’s Combined Articles Limit section. The most you will get in return is $750, no matter how much greater their individual or combined value may be. Total reimbursements for all items cannot exceed your policy’s $2,500 Maximum Benefit Limit. Keep in mind that your Nepal trip insurance provided will require documentation to support your claim of possession and loss before they reimburse you. Proof of ownership can include police reports, original receipts, photographs, and letters from the responsible party (i.e., your travel carrier, hotel, etc.). Review the full details of your travel plan to ensure you know the different limits of your baggage loss coverage.

Will my Nepal travel insurance plan cover extreme sports and adventure activities such as trekking?

Most travelers to Nepal are there to experience world-class trekking, including Annapurna and Mt. Everest, and other adventure sports. With a high risk of injury, securing a travel insurance plan that covers these activities is essential. To find an insurance provider for this level of coverage, I suggest using SquareMouth.com and selecting their “Sports & Activities” filter. Doing so will allow you to enter the specific activities you plan to participate in while on vacation in Nepal. Once you submit your query, it will show you all of the available plans that provide your requested coverage. Remember to read all of a policy’s details before buying.

Will my travel insurance plan cover the inherent costs that come with canceled flights?

The vast majority of the time, trip insurance will cover canceled flights. For example, you can expect to be eligible for benefits if your flight gets canceled at least 24 hours before departure due to inclement weather, an employee strike or a natural disaster. However, if you need to cancel your flight, there are some circumstances under which you could be reimbursed. These include the illness, injury or death of an insured travel companion or your own medical emergency. Additional approved reasons include civil unrest in your location or destination, a jury duty summons or unexpected military deployment.

Most common problems while traveling in Nepal and how to avoid them:

Altitude sickness is a typical illness that travelers in Nepal experience, especially those who insist on trekking without a local guide or sherpa and don’t appropriately pace their ascents and descents. Travelers Diarrhea is another illness that plagues those who visit Nepal. TD, a stomach and intestinal condition, also manifests with several other symptoms, including fever, headache, abdominal cramps, bloating and more. Make sure you eat food that has been cooked properly–piping hot!–or raw produce that has been washed well. Other health risks include dengue fever and malaria. Should you lose your appetite, get dizzy and nauseous and develop a high fever, consult a doctor immediately. If left untreated, both of these can be fatal, especially if you allow yourself to become dehydrated.

When people think of Nepal, they often think of mountains–8 of the 10 world’s largest! And when it comes to accidents and injuries, most are the result of trekking expeditions throughout the country. Twisted ankles and frostbite are among the most common injuries among travelers in Nepal. Falling victim to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides and blizzards are also possible. Another potential for accidents is tied to riding buses. Buses in Nepal are old and often poorly maintained, as are the country’s treacherous mountain roads.

Pickpockets and muggers are particularly active in busy transportation hubs, the Thamel area of Kathmandu and other busy areas packed with tourists. Money belts are a smart choice as long as you wear them correctly–under your shirt and the waistband of your pants. Also, if you must take a bus anywhere within the country and hand over your luggage to be stowed away, keep all of your valuables in a small backpack that you carry onboard so that they don’t get stolen during stops along the way.

Other local knowledge that is helpful for travelers

Accommodations.

Nepal offers a wide range of accommodations catering to all budgets, ranging from backpacker hostels and small family-run guesthouses to 5-star hotels and luxury resorts. While your accommodation is covered during your treks, you will still need to book a place to stay in Kathmandu or the surrounding areas for the night of your arrival in Nepal and any additional time you wish. In Kathmandu, most travelers stay in Thamel, the historic part of the city, which is packed with restaurants, shops, and cafĂ©s. Pokhara, a lakeside town, is the other most popular destination for tourists in Nepal, which abounds with comfortable guesthouses and restaurants. Avoid staying anywhere called a lodge (or “hotel and lodge”) and is excessively cheap. These places are often stark and uncomfortable, with unsanitary bathrooms and cold water showers. However, in the mountains, lodges can be pretty comfortable and primitive with hospitable owners.

The national currency is the Nepalese rupee (NPR). Note that the NPR is not exchanged anywhere else in the world. In fact, it is illegal to take Nepalese rupees out of the country. Therefore, you must exchange your NPRs for another currency before departing. You can do so at the airport or usually in Kathmandu. The Nepalese rupee comes in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, and 1000 NPR notes, along with NPR 1, 2, 5, and 10 coins. Since Nepal is primarily a cash-based society, always keep plenty of cash on hand. While this is not the norm in other countries, you will get the best exchange rates at the airport. Also, ATMs are available in touristy areas, but they are far less prevalent than you are used to in the States. Having US dollars of larger denominations ($100 or $50) will simplify your life since Foreign Currency Exchanges are available in places like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini. You will need to show your passport to exchange currencies, and always remember to save your receipts from these exchanges. Should you use ATMs in Nepal to withdraw funds, you must notify your US bank of your travel dates and destination, so they do not block your card due to “suspicious activity.” You will need your PIN, so be sure to have it committed to memory before leaving home.

Eating in Nepal can be an absolute pleasure, as Tibet and India have highly influenced their cuisine. Nepali dishes are loaded with vegetables, meats, spices, lentils and chickpeas. The most popular dish among locals is dal bhat, which, if you get the complete Nepali khana set, usually includes rice, a small serving of lentil soup, curried vegetables, pickles, some raw vegetables and a dairy sauce or yogurt. Dal bhat is healthy and filling. Another comparable meal to the Nepali khana set mentioned above is the Takhali Thali, which hails from the Mustang region of the country. Like the khana, the thali comes with rice, buckwheat, maize, millet, dal, pickles and vegetables. Nepali people also love their momos! These are steamed dumplings filled with spices and vegetables or meat that are served with chutney. Almost as popular as momos, but not quite, are samosas, also found throughout the Indian subcontinent. These are fried savory pastries filled with spices, potatoes and other vegetables that are served with chutney. While there are several other much-loved snacks and dishes in Nepal, these are the best. Just don’t forget to try a piping hot cup of Nepali masala chia at least once, particularly if you go trekking. It’s comparable to Indian masala chai (tea). Lastly, do not waste food. Nepalis waste nothing and will polish their plates. Wasting is not only an insult to the chef, but it symbolizes a lack of respect for the abundance you are given. After all, Nepal is an impoverished country and people value what they have. On the other hand, asking for seconds is a great compliment to the chef.

Getting Around

How you get around Nepal may vary based on where you go and what you plan to do. Whether you go by bicycle, motorbike, bus, mini-bus, or airplane, traveling throughout this mountainous country requires some planning due to the poor condition of the vehicles and roads. Whenever you’re in any Nepali city, tuk-tuks, taxis and your own feet are the most reliable options for getting around. For tuk-tuks, ensure that you establish a fare for your destination before you set off. You may have to do the same with taxis if you can’t find a driver willing to use the meter. While bus travel seems to be the most popular mode of transport, it’s important to point out that it comes with significant risks and is quite dangerous. Thousands of bus accidents occur yearly, resulting in many deaths and injuries. Avoid Local and Regular buses if possible since there is little comfort, and people travel on the roofs and floors. Instead, purchase tickets for Tourist, Express or Deluxe buses where you will enjoy a reasonable amount of comfort. Even though Tourist Buses are the most expensive, they are still very budget-friendly. Mountain biking trips throughout Nepal have become incredibly popular in recent years. You can take one-day or multi-day cycling trips on the Annapurna Circuit, to remote villages, from Kathmandu to Pokhara and beyond. The longest trips on offer last approximately 16 days. Always seek a reputable company to take your mountain biking trips with, as they can supply you with appropriate gear and bikes and provide an abundance of cultural and trail knowledge. This is the best way to minimize injuries and maximize your overall experience of Nepal. Should you choose to rent a motorbike to explore the country, only do so if you’re used to riding motorbikes or motorcycles back home, as the rough roads in Nepal can pose a real threat to your safety. Also, to drive in Nepal, even a motorbike, you will need an International Driver’s Permit (available through AAA online/mail or in-person) and your US driver’s license. Finally, if you decide to rent/hire a car, it’s probably best to hire a driver since they know the roads well. Flying is another option for moving around Nepal, as small airports and airstrips are scattered throughout this Himalayan country. The three airlines you can book tickets with are Nepal Airlines (government-run), Yeti Airlines and Buddha Air–the latter two are privately owned air carriers with better performance and safety records. The most common flights people take are from Kathmandu to Pokhara, particularly among those who plan to trek the Annapurna Circuit and Lukla for those who want to do an Everest Base Camp trek. While flying can save you a tremendous amount of time and score you some breathtaking views of the Himalayas, please note that Nepal does not have the best air safety record.

Local Customs & Etiquette

Knowing how to greet people is an important aspect of life in Nepal. In Nepal, people greet one another with “Namaste” and put their hands in a prayer position. Namaste means “the light in me honors the light in you.” The more respect you intend to show, the higher you hold your hands. For example, if you meet elders or monks, you might want to raise your prayer hands in front of your face. Whereas with others, you can place your hands in prayer at the center of your chest. Groups of men tend to greet one another individually with handshakes instead. When in doubt, follow the lead of the locals with whom you’re interacting. Nepal is a “right-handed” community like many countries in the region. This means that Nepali people view the left hand as dirty. It is the hand people wipe themselves with when using the bathroom. And since most Nepalis do not use toilet paper, you can imagine the disgust they might experience if you pay for your meal by handing them cash with your left hand. In short, if you shake hands or give something to someone, always use your right hand. If you receive an invitation to a Nepali home, remember to remove your shoes before entering. You may see shoes outside the front door or just inside it, so act accordingly. This keeps outside dirt and “bad energy” from spreading throughout the home. Unlike in the US, people in Nepal do not touch one another’s heads. The head is sacred for them as they perceive it to be their connection to divine energy or spirit. Respect this custom completely, even with babies. Furthermore, dress modestly while you’re in Nepal. This is a very traditional country, and it’s important to respect their customs around clothing, especially when visiting a temple or a stupa. Appropriate attire includes pants or skirts that cover the knees and reach your ankles as well as tops that cover your shoulders. Tops that reveal cleavage or show one’s knees is not acceptable. Also, remember to remove your shoes before entering a temple and refrain from taking photos, as most temples prohibit it. While in Nepal, you may see men and women walking separately by gender. It’s typical to see men walking with their arms around one another or holding hands; the same goes for women. Since PDAs are frowned upon in Nepal, these tactile gestures between people of the same gender have nothing to do with sexuality. Instead, it is a form of acceptable affection between friends. Another quirk about the people of Nepal is their laid-back attitude towards time. While most adventure sports and activities usually take place relatively as planned, most meetings do not. So relax and get on Nepali time! Lastly, do not be caught off-guard by the Nepali habit of spitting. Nepalis spit frequently and everywhere, so watch out you don’t end up in the line of fire.

Public bathrooms, or “toilets” as they are known in Nepal, are in major shortage, even in the capital of Kathmandu. So it’s always best to grab a drink at a cafĂ© or a meal in a restaurant and use their bathroom instead. Many businesses catering to tourists will have Western-style toilets, while smaller businesses may have squat toilets. Should you end up using a public toilet, expect to pay a minimal fee and don’t be surprised if you get asked, “Short toilet or long toilet?” This does not mean what you probably think it does. You declare “short toilet” if you need to pee and “long toilet” if your bowels need to move. It may seem odd or embarrassing to say your intentions for the toilet publicly, but it’s the norm in Nepal. A “long toilet” will cost you slightly more. If you cannot find the lever and it comes time to flush, look to see if there is a bucket and a water tap in your stall. If so, you’ll have to manually flush the toilet by filling up the bucket and pouring the water into the toilet.

First and foremost, always tip in Nepalese rupees, not dollars. Tipping is expected in restaurants, hotels and businesses that cater to tourists. You may see a 10% service charge on your restaurant bills. While this fee supposedly goes to the servers, many contend it may not. Therefore, leaving a cash tip for your server of 10-15% of your bill for good service is always appreciated. Casual food stands or shops that do not employ servers will not expect tips, though leaving behind your coins or rounding up to the next rupee note is polite. Many hotels have tip boxes at their front desks for the cleaning staff. If they do not, you can leave it in your room. The suggested tip is $1/night for hotels that cost up to $25/night. Increase your tip to a maximum of US $4-$5 for more expensive accommodations. An appropriate tip for bellhops is $1 per bag in most hotels, but if you’re staying at a resort or luxury hotel, $2 is good. When requesting concierge assistance, tipping $2-$3 will go a long way in ensuring you get good service. Should you order room service, always tip a minimum of 10%. However, if your order is small, like a coffee and toast, then tip a minimum of $0.50. Only tip taxi drivers who use their meter when shuttling you from one place to another. We say this because it reinforces honesty. You can round up to the nearest NPR note or give them an extra $1-$2 tip. It depends on the quality of service you receive. Lastly, be sure to tip your trekking guide and porters. A standard tip for guides is 10% of your total trek costs–a minimum of $5/day for solo trekkers; $10/day for group trekkers. Of course, you can always tip more if you have the time of your life and really want to thank them for the experience and memories. Don’t forget to tip your porters $3-5/day. The heavier your bag, the more you should tip. If you trek in a group instead of hiring a guide for just you and your friends or family, then tipping will be on a group basis. Ask your trekking company how to handle this best. You will also want to tip any guides you may have for city or cultural tours, approximately $3-5 for the day.

Trekking in Nepal is a dream come true for many Americans, and the great thing is that there are treks for all types. So whether you want to go for a day hike, a 5-day trek or an arduous 21-day trek, you have plenty of choices, from Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit to the Tamang Heritage Trail and the less crowded Upper Mustang trail. Many experienced trekkers and mountain climbers assume they’ll be fine trekking on their own, but this sort of hubris often leads to serious injury and can threaten a person’s safety. Professional guides and porters from Nepal-based companies know every detail of these trails, understand how to pace trekkers to prevent altitude sickness and can lead people out of dangerous circumstances. Speaking from experience, save yourself the money and hassle of bringing all your fancy trekking gear from home. You can rent or buy everything you need in Nepal for a fraction of the price, but do bring your own boots, rain poncho, antibiotics for stomach or respiratory illnesses, bandages, face cloth, travel towel, headlamp and batteries. Also, be sure to bring 2-4 extra passport photos–check with your tour operator–with you as your trekking guide/company will need them to apply for your trekking permit, also known as TIMS. Keep this permit with you at all times. This permit is like a passport, but it is also Nepal’s way of keeping track of trekkers to ensure no one goes missing. Most treks will specify whether your accommodations will be with local families, tents or teahouses. Teahouses are family-run mountain inns. They vary quite a bit with respect to size and comfort. Some have hot showers and heated rooms, while others don’t. The good news is that Nepal makes the warmest blankets you’ve ever seen! Furthermore, most teahouses offer all-day food and chia/chai (tea). Dal bhat is a typical lunch meal, though many teahouses offer Western-style foods, including sandwiches, pasta, eggs, pies and more.

A typical scam, primarily in Kathmandu, is conducted by men who dress as if they are holy men, also known as sadhus. The scam starts by beckoning tourists to them to take photographs with them. Once the pictures are taken, the “sadhus” demand payment, leaving unsuspecting tourists caught off-guard and feeling cheated. Just avoid them altogether. Credit card skimming is particularly common at nightclubs in Nepal. So unless you want to spend part of your vacation on the phone with your credit card company dealing with fraudulent charges, steer clear of them or pay cash. If you decide to go to bars or clubs in Kathmandu or Pokhara, drink-spiking is common, especially among tourists. Taxi drivers have a terrible reputation in Nepal for scamming tourists. Most will refuse to use the meter, charging tourists double or triple the regular fare. You can decide to wait until you find a taxi that will use the meter or attempt to set a fixed price with a driver who refuses to use their meter. Many scams involve children, particularly the “buy milk for baby” scam. Do your best to avoid these situations at all costs. If you feel sorry for a child, you can buy them food or a small carton of milk and open it for them to consume immediately, but do not do so at the store they’re trying to lure you into because the shopkeeper will charge you an excessive amount of money.

Nepal is generally a very safe country, even for solo female travelers. That said, using common sense and exercising your street smarts never hurts. Never leave your valuables unattended. Don’t flash around large sums of cash, fancy jewelry or expensive camera gear. Avoid walking alone at night, particularly in desolate or dark areas. Petty theft, such as pickpocketing or muggings, is the most common but not more than in most American cities. If you are trekking, never go alone. Always employ the services of a guide and be sure to heed their advice to minimize your risk of injury or illness while in the mountains. Unfortunately, there have been instances of sexual assault against solo female trekkers by their male guides. While it is certainly not the norm, if you want to put your mind at ease, hire a female guide (yes, there are a few!) if you’re solo trekking or join a group trek. Avoid nightclubs in Nepal. After countless scams of having vast sums of money charged to their credit cards and their drinks spiked, there is no real incentive to go. Instead, stick to your hotel bar if you need a drink.

New US immigrant insurance

New US Immigrant health insurance

The Trump administration had introduced rules making it mandatory for prospective new US immigrants to show proof of adequate US health insurance while applying for the immigrant visa. The aim of this mandatory US health insurance for immigrants is to reduce the burden on the US hospitals, the overall US health care system and finally on US tax payers by uninsured new immigrants.

At American Visitor insurance we offer immigrant health insurance plans which work well for prospective new US immigrants. After buying this immigrant medical insurance, customers will immediately receive the health insurance policy document by email. Customers can use this immigrant insurance document as proof of US health insurance while applying for the Immigrant visa. Given this rule as well as the very high cost of healthcare in the US, it is strongly recommended to buy medical insurance for new US immigrants.

Travel Insurance in Nepal Introduction

Travel Insurance in Nepal is very important When planning an adventurous journey to Nepal , it’s essential to consider every aspect of your trip. While you may focus on exciting activities, breathtaking landscapes, and cultural experiences, one aspect that should not be overlooked is travel insurance. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of travel insurance in Nepal, highlighting its benefits and coverage options, ensuring you have a worry-free and secure trip.

The Importance of Travel Insurance in Nepal

Travel insurance is an essential component of any travel plan, and Nepal is no exception. Despite being a beautiful and safe destination, unforeseen events can still occur. From lost luggage to medical emergencies, travel insurance provides the necessary financial protection and peace of mind. In a foreign country like Nepal, where language barriers and unfamiliar healthcare systems may pose challenges, having travel insurance becomes even more crucial.

Coverage Options Travel Insurance in Nepal

When choosing travel insurance for your Nepal adventure, it’s important to consider the coverage options that suit your needs. Most comprehensive travel insurance policies provide coverage for medical emergencies, including hospitalization, emergency evacuation, and repatriation. Additionally, they often cover trip cancellations or interruptions due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, natural disasters, or political unrest.

Another essential aspect of travel insurance in Nepal is coverage for activities like trekking, mountaineering, and adventure sports. Nepal is famous for its breathtaking treks to Everest Base Camp, the Annapurna Circuit, and many more. Having insurance that specifically covers these activities ensures you are protected in case of accidents or emergencies that may occur during your adventure.

Furthermore, travel insurance typically includes coverage for lost or delayed baggage, trip delays, and personal liability. It’s important to carefully review the policy details to understand the coverage limits, exclusions, and any additional optional coverage that might be available.

Benefits of Travel Insurance in Nepal

Travel insurance offers several benefits that can greatly enhance your travel experience in Nepal. Firstly, it provides financial protection against unexpected expenses, such as medical bills, emergency evacuations, or cancellation fees. This allows you to focus on enjoying your trip without worrying about the financial burden of unforeseen events.

Secondly, travel insurance provides access to emergency assistance services. In case of a medical emergency or other critical situation, you can contact the insurance company’s 24/7 helpline for guidance, support, and coordination of necessary services. This can be particularly valuable when dealing with language barriers or unfamiliar healthcare systems in Nepal.

Lastly, travel insurance may offer additional benefits like travel concierge services, which can assist with trip planning, booking accommodations, or providing local information. These services can enhance your overall travel experience and make your journey in Nepal more convenient and enjoyable.

Additional Content Travel Insurance in Nepal

Choosing the Right Travel Insurance Provider When selecting a travel insurance provider for your Nepal trip, it’s important to consider a few key factors. Look for reputable insurance companies that have experience and expertise in providing coverage for adventure travel or trips to remote destinations. Check customer reviews and ratings to gauge their reliability and customer service.

Additionally, ensure that the travel insurance policy covers the entire duration of your trip, including any pre- or post-trip extensions. Read the policy terms and conditions carefully to understand the coverage limitations, exclusions, and any required documentation for claims.

It’s also advisable to compare quotes from multiple insurance providers to find the best value for your money. Consider the coverage limits, deductibles, and any additional features or benefits offered by each policy. Keep in mind that the cheapest policy may not always provide the necessary coverage for your specific needs, so strike a balance between affordability and comprehensive coverage.

Travel Insurance for High-Altitude Trekking: Nepal is renowned for its high-altitude treks, which can pose unique risks and challenges. If you plan to undertake treks like Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, make sure your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking. This coverage typically includes emergency medical evacuations from remote areas and coverage for altitude-related illnesses such as acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Ensure that your policy covers the cost of helicopter rescue, as emergency evacuations by helicopter are often the only option in remote regions of Nepal. Verify that the maximum altitude limit specified in the policy aligns with the altitude of your chosen trek.

Travel insurance is an indispensable investment for anyone planning a trip to Nepal. It provides financial protection, access to emergency assistance, and a sense of security in the event of unforeseen events or emergencies. By selecting the right coverage options and reputable insurance providers, you can enjoy your journey through Nepal’s awe-inspiring landscapes and cultural treasures, knowing that you are well-prepared and protected. Happy travels!

Travel Insurance for Nepal

Written and researched by Michael Kays (Travel Insurance Expert) | Fact Checked by Danya Kristen (Insurance Agent).

Nepal! A name that stirs the spirit of adventure in every traveler.

The mighty Himalayas with their white, snow-laden peaks kiss the cerulean sky as if challenging you to a thrilling rendezvous. But hold your horses! Before you pack those sturdy boots and thermal layers, let’s talk about something equally exciting – travel insurance .

Okay, maybe not as exciting, but arguably more critical for your upcoming journey to this incredible land. This exhaustive (and bursting with surprises) guide will walk you through the whirlwind world of travel insurance for Nepal.

In this article...

The Wild, Wild East: Why Travel Insurance for Nepal?

Nepal isn’t your typical tourist destination. It’s a magical blend of bustling cities, timeless traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and extreme adventures.

Every part of this exciting mix brings its own set of challenges – and that’s where travel insurance steps in to be your safeguard.

Healthcare Horror Stories:

Hospitals in the remote regions of Nepal? Think again! Medical facilities, particularly in the secluded trekking areas, are sparse and basic at best. If you find yourself in a health pickle, emergency evacuation might be your only way out. Without insurance ? Prepare to shell out a mini fortune.

Plan B for Plan Cancellation :

Life is unpredictable, so is your trip to Nepal. Your meticulously planned journey could fall victim to illness, wild weather, or unexpected hiccups leading to cancellation or curtailment. Having travel insurance can save you from swallowing those non-refundable costs.

The Case of the Missing Belongings:

The vibrant markets of Kathmandu are a delight, but what if you lose your camera or, worse still, it gets stolen? Travel insurance to the rescue, my friend!

The Adventure Add-On:

Nepal is an adrenaline junkie’s paradise, no doubt. Trekking, mountaineering, white-water rafting, paragliding – it’s all happening here. But remember, with great adventure comes great risk. Most insurance policies consider these as high-risk activities and hence need additional coverage .

Recommended Plans

✅  Atlas America

Up to $2,000,000 of Overall Maximum Coverage, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Medical coverage for eligible expenses related to COVID-19, Trip Interruption & Travel Delay.

✅  Safe Travels Comprehensive

Coverage for in-patient and out-patient medical accidents up to $1 Million, Coverage of acute episodes of pre-existing conditions, Coverage from 5 days to 364 days (about 12 months).

✅  Patriot America Platinum

Up to $8,000,000 limits, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Coinsurance for treatment received in the U.S. (100% within PPO Network), Acute Onset of Pre-Existing Conditions covered.

Diving into the Fine Print: What Should Your Nepal Travel Insurance Cover?

The labyrinth of travel insurance policies can leave you perplexed. Different providers, different terms, different coverages – it’s a whirlwind! But fear not.

Here’s what you need to be looking for when hunting for that perfect travel insurance for Nepal:

All-encompassing Medical Coverage:

When we say generous medical coverage, we mean it! Emergency evacuations, repatriation – the works. Given Nepal’s rough and rugged terrain and the isolation of many locations, this one is a no-brainer.

The Adventure Angle:

Ready to take on the wild side of Nepal? Double-check if your policy covers adventure activities. You may have to shell out a bit extra for these, but believe us, it’s worth it.

Cancellation Catastrophes:

Make sure your policy has you covered for cancellations due to all sorts of circumstances – illness, injury, death of a dear one, severe weather conditions , or even a natural calamity.

Baggage Bumps:

Check the cover for individual items and your overall baggage. If you’re carrying expensive gear, you might need to ramp up your coverage.

Emergency Assistance, Round the Clock:

You want to be able to dial up your insurer, anytime, anywhere. Look for a provider that offers 24/7 emergency assistance.

The Cost Conundrum: How Much Will Your Nepal Travel Insurance Set You Back?

The price tag on your travel insurance policy for Nepal will be a balancing act between several factors your age, the duration of your Nepalese escapade, your health status, the coverage you opt for, and, of course, your insurance provider.

Let’s put it in numbers, shall we?

Usually, you can expect your insurance to be about 4-10% of your total trip cost. So, if you’re shelling out $3000 for the trip, your insurance might range anywhere from $120 to $300.

And remember, with insurance, as with most things, the cheapest isn’t necessarily the best. It’s all about striking the right balance between cost and coverage.

The Grand Finale: How to Buy Travel Insurance for Nepal

So, you’ve made it this far. You’re almost ready to embark on your Nepalese adventure. But before you do, you have one final task: buying your travel insurance.

Don’t worry; it’s easier than it sounds. There are several reputable insurance providers who specialize in travel insurance for destinations as diverse and thrilling as Nepal.

All you need to do is compare the quotes from different providers, delve into the nitty-gritty of their policies, and pick the one that fits your needs best. And voila! You’re ready to conquer Nepal, armed with the peace of mind that only a comprehensive travel insurance policy can provide.

The bustling streets of Kathmandu, the serene beauty of Pokhara’s lakes, the exhilarating challenge of Everest Base Camp – whatever your Nepalese dream, it’s waiting for you.

And with the right travel insurance in your backpack, you’re all set to live it to the fullest, knowing that you’re protected against life’s unexpected surprises.

Go forth and enjoy your adventure, for in the wise words of Saint Augustine, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

So why not turn the page to Nepal and begin your journey, equipped with the knowledge and protection of your well-chosen travel insurance policy?

Adventure awaits!

Travel Insurance for Nepal

travel insurance for nepal

We advise all our clients to get travel insurance that covers Medical evacuation insurance and Travel protection .  Medical evacuation insurance is a must when travelling at high altitudes in a remote part of the world where there are no other means of transportation available in case of the occurrence of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) or any other reasons in high altitudes. Similarly, Travel protection is highly recommended to protect your travel investment from unforeseen circumstances that may occur during or before your trip.

Emergency Medical Evacuation, Travel protection (Cancellation/Interruption), Medical expenses, Baggage loss & delays, and Death & Repatriation are also other important factors to include when purchasing your Insurance. It is advisable to review carefully the insurance and its coverages before making the final decision. Carry proof of your insurance with you on the holiday and leave a copy next to your kin. You must ensure that your insurance provides an adequate level of protection and covers you for the activities involved.

Below you will find some information and recommendation that might help you in getting your insurance sorted before you embark on your adventure.

First thing first:

If you have an annual policy, household insurer or an existing health insurance company, check with them first if they are able to offer you a policy that covers the level of activity that you are undertaking as they are generally cheaper than getting new insurance.

Medical, Rescue and treatment:

Medical evacuation in remote places where there are no other means of transportation available can be really expensive. It’s mandatory for all our clients to have insurance that covers emergency evacuation, medical and treatment. If your own insurance doesn’t provide these coverages, then we strongly urge you to consider it again and get yourself fully insured. It is also important to know how much coverage you have and under what circumstances the medical coverage applies.

Travel protection:

Losing the money, you have paid for the trip is worse should you need to cancel the trip after confirmation. Therefore, having Insurance with Travel protection is recommended. Things don’t always go as planned and there may be some unexpected events that require you to cancel or change your trip. All the trip deposits paid are non-refundable in case of any events so having your insurance provide these coverages can be helpful. Similarly, If you miss a flight/connecting flight or your flight is delayed, your policy can help, but only if the delay or missed flight is due to an Insured Event (Severe weather, natural disaster, hijacking, strike). However, this coverage may vary as per the insurance companies so please read the policy wording carefully.

Lost or Delayed Baggage:

Most travel insurance will cover up to a certain dollar amount. The key lies in knowing how much you are covered for so kindly check with your insurance about the limit.

Level of activities & sports:

It is highly recommended that you check with your insurance if it covers your level of activity, trip style and elevation before purchasing. Kindly ensure that it covers specific activities as per your trip style and the maximum elevation.

Exclusions:

Like most insurance policies, travel insurance has many exceptions. You should make note of any specific events or items that are excluded from your policy.

We highly recommend purchasing Insurance that covers COVID-19 related expenses too.

Travel Insurance

online travel insurance nepal

“Feel Confidence, Take the Journey” When planning a trip to Nepal, including any type of activity, it is highly recommended to have travel insurance before traveling to Nepal. However, Nepal High Trek has been informing our client before heading to Nepal. We recommend that your insurance is worth a minimum of USD 100,000. Travel insurance provides coverage for unforeseen events, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, evacuation, loss or theft of belongings, and other travel-related risks. Here are some essential points to consider when purchasing travel insurance for your Nepal trip.

  • Medical Coverage: Ensure that your travel insurance provides comprehensive medical coverage, including emergency medical expenses, hospitalization, and emergency medical evacuation if needed. Medical treatment in remote areas or at high altitudes can be expensive, so having adequate coverage is crucial.
  • Emergency Evacuation: Look for insurance that covers emergency evacuation by helicopter or other means in case of a medical emergency or severe altitude sickness. The Upper Mustang region is remote, and access to medical facilities may be limited, so emergency evacuation coverage is essential.
  • Adventure Activities Coverage: Confirm that your insurance policy covers trekking activities and any other adventure activities you plan to engage in during your Nepal trip. Some insurance policies may have specific exclusions for certain activities or altitudes, so make sure you read the policy details carefully.
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption: Choose a policy that covers trip cancellation or interruption due to unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, injury, or natural disasters. This will protect your investment in case you need to cancel or cut short your trip.
  • Lost or Stolen Belongings: Ensure that your travel insurance covers the loss or theft of your belongings, including luggage, personal items, and equipment. This coverage can be valuable, especially when traveling in unfamiliar environments.
  • Policy Limits and Exclusions: Read the policy terms and conditions thoroughly, including any coverage limits, deductibles, and exclusions. Pay attention to any pre-existing conditions exclusions and understand the claim process and documentation requirements.
  • Duration of Coverage: Make sure your travel insurance covers the entire duration of your trip, including any pre- and post-trekking activities. It is advisable to have insurance coverage for a few days before and after the trek to account for any unforeseen circumstances or delays.
  • Compare Multiple Policies: Shop around and compare different insurance policies to find the one that best suits your needs. Consider factors such as coverage, price, reputation of the insurance company, and customer reviews.
  • Declare Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure to declare them when purchasing travel insurance. Failure to disclose pre-existing conditions may lead to denial of coverage when making a claim.

Remember to keep a copy of your travel insurance policy and emergency contact numbers with you during your trip. It is also advisable to inform your travel companions or family members about your insurance coverage and how to contact the insurance provider in case of an emergency.

Recommended Travel Insurance for Nepal Tour, Trek and Climbing

An effective form of protection for overseas travel is travel insurance, which insures against monetary losses related to travel. When unanticipated events like illness, injury, accidents, delayed flights or other forms of transportation, and other problems arise, travel insurance can help cover the financial losses. 4%–10% of the cost of a trip is spent on this insurance. Thus, the cost of trip insurance for a $10,000 vacation could range from $400 to $1,000.

For everyone wishing to travel to Nepal with Green Valley Nepal Treks, travel insurance is necessary. Both emergency medical evacuation and medical costs must be covered by the travel insurance. It is recommended that the minimum value of your insurance be USD 100,000.

The Himalayas are breathtaking, but there are serious risks involved. When traveling, it's vital to be prepared for any unforeseen risks that can arise. Travel insurance services are available online from a number of insurance providers. At your convenience, you have access to a large selection of insurance providers. The risk of minor health problems, accidents, and—above all—altitude sickness is always present, especially when trekking in Nepal .

In the event of serious accidents or severe alpine sickness, you must select an insurance plan that includes the expense of a helicopter rescue from the mountains. The only means of escape from the highlands in such dire situations involving an emergency evacuation is via a helicopter service. This comprises a rescue squad for both aerial rescue and land evacuation. For this reason, in order to pay for the cost of helicopter services and your evacuation from the Himalayas, we need proof of travel insurance.

Therefore, before you book your trip with Green Valley Nepal Treks, confirm that your travel insurance from a reputable insurance provider covers all of the expenses listed above.

Table of Contents

How travel insurance works in nepal.

When you book your trip, lodging, or vehicle, travel agencies, travel suppliers (airlines, cruise lines), private insurance firms, or insurance brokers may all sell travel insurance online.

Usually, you'll buy coverage soon after making your first reservations for activities, hotels, flights, and other modes of transportation. You might have to comply with certain policies in order to continue receiving full coverage. These are some terminology related to travel insurance that you should understand.

Primary and Secondary Coverage of Travel Insurance

Purchasing travel insurance may result in concurrent insurance coverage, which entitles you to coverage under multiple policies. When travel insurance is primary, it pays out first, eliminating the need for you to file a claim with a different carrier and maybe saving you money on higher policy premiums. You must first try to make a claim with another insurer, such as your own auto insurance (damaged automobile) or an airline (lost baggage), if the travel insurance is secondary.

Coverage Requirements of Travel Insurance for Nepal Treks and Tours

Usually, there are requirements that specify your eligibility for coverage. Your claim needs to fit within the available coverage categories. For example, personal belongings, prescription drugs, credit cards, and your passport or visa may all be covered by lost baggage insurance. In order to be eligible for coverage, you might also need to take additional actions, such as notifying the police of the theft or loss.

Policy Coverage Limits or Travel Insurance for Nepal Trip

This is the most money you will be compensated for the claim. For instance, you might only get paid $500 for each bag. Even more might not be given to you for pricey things like jewelry or electronics. For purchases over a particular threshold, you can be required to produce receipts. The insurance may only cover repairs in the absence of receipts.

A deductible, or fixed amount, may be required by some coverage before the remaining portion of your claim is paid up to the limit.

These are the circumstances in which the loss will not be covered by your plan. Every policy is unique. For instance, losses brought on by animals might not be covered by your luggage damage policy. Bicycles, tickets, hearing aids, and other medical equipment, as well as anything seized by law enforcement or customs officials, could not be covered.

Pre-existing conditions could not be covered by travel medical insurance, or they might only be if you purchase a plan within a week or two after reserving your vacation.

Travel Insurance Reason

Reasons for Purchasing Travel Insurance for Nepal Trip

Travel insurance for trekking and hiking in nepal.

Purchasing travel insurance is strongly recommended for any trekking or hiking excursions in the Himalayas. The countryside offers less danger and is generally more comfortable for hiking. However, common illnesses like hypothermia, skin infections, and stomach problems are more common at higher altitudes and in isolated locations, along with a high risk of Acute Mountain Sickness.

Make sure your insurance covers the cost of a helicopter rescue and evacuation, including medical fees and trip cancellation, if you plan on trekking in Nepal.

Travel Insurance for Peak Climbing in Nepal

Compared to other outdoor hobbies, peak climbing, and expedition travel are seen as riskier pursuits. As you ascend above 6,000 meters, there is a substantial chance that you will get hurt because of a number of factors, including low visibility, high heights, and extremely high temperatures. It is consequently important to have insurance for peak climbing that covers emergency medical evacuation, helicopter evacuation, repatriation, and trip cancellation.

Other Outdoor Activities in Nepal

Traveling can be risky, even while outdoor activities can be enjoyable. Even though outdoor activities are generally low-risk in Nepal, unanticipated events can incur significant costs.  In that regard, having travel insurance is essential for outdoor activities; however, unlike peak climbing and trekking, advanced travel insurance is not always necessary for outdoor activities. For example, helicopter rescue is not always required for city tours covered by travel insurance.

Travel Insurance Coverage

Types of Insurance Coverage for Nepal Trip

Comprehensive travel insurance.

Many different kinds of coverage are combined into one plan by comprehensive travel insurance. Comprehensive travel insurance typically includes medical expenses and medical evacuation coverage in addition to a 24-hour helpline for finding doctors or getting aid in an emergency. It also usually includes reimbursement for trip cancellation, interruption, and delay, baggage loss, and delay.

Alternatively, you can buy every kind of coverage separately. This can be a good idea if you can often cover your losses or if you currently have coverage from another insurance.

Trip Cancellation or Interruption Coverage

This insurance is available in the following formats and reimburses a traveler for all or part of their pre-paid nonrefundable travel expenses:

  • Trip Cancellation: Pays back your prepaid travel costs in the event that you are unable to travel for a prearranged cause.
  • Travel Delay: Pays you back for costs incurred if there is a delay that prevents you from traveling.
  • Trip Interruption:  This covers your travel expenses in the event that your trip must be shortened.
  • Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): Usually more expensive than the other options mentioned above, this option reimburses you for a portion of the expenditures if you need to cancel the trip for any reason.

A provider's permitted reasons for cancellation or interruption and the amount of payment differ with the majority of the aforementioned. A claim may be justified for any of the following reasons:

  • Your illness
  • Illness or death in your immediate family
  • Sudden business conflicts
  • Weather-related issues
  • Legal obligations such as jury duty

In order to register a claim for a cancellation owing to financial default, terrorism in the city of your destination, or work-related reasons, you might have to pay more or fulfill more requirements.

Damage and Baggage Losses Coverage

Travelers frequently experience baggage and personal goods being lost, stolen, or damaged. This can rapidly ruin a trip as you have to shop for replacements. Coverage for baggage and personal items guards against misplaced, pilfered, or destroyed possessions when traveling to, within, and out of a location.

Nevertheless, a lot of travel insurance plans only cover personal items once you've used up all other possible claims. Many limitations and exclusions may apply to baggage coverage, such as the $500 maximum per item and the $250 maximum for each extra item. By paying extra, you might be able to change the amounts, compare different coverage options, or raise the limitations.

For instance, if the airline is at fault for missing or damaged luggage, the insurance might not cover it. In the event that an airline makes a mistake and your luggage is lost or destroyed, most carriers, including airlines, will refund you. Nevertheless, there can be restrictions on the amount of compensation; therefore, extra protection is offered by the baggage and personal effects coverage.

Rental Insurance

Costs resulting from unintentional damage to a vacation rental property are covered by insurance. To help with expense reimbursement in the event that you are unable to use your vacation rental, several plans also provide trip cancellation and interruption benefits. The following are a few possible explanations:

  • Lost or stolen keys
  • Unsanitary or unsafe vacation property
  • Vacation rental wasn't as advertised
  • The company oversold your vacation rental

In replacement of your own auto insurance policy or the collision damage waiver (CDW) offered by the rental company, rental car insurance covers damage or theft to a rental automobile while traveling. Different policies may cover theft, vandalism, crashes, and other situations. In addition to your personal auto insurance, you might also get rental car insurance. Nevertheless, it excludes your legal obligation and responsibility for any harm or damage you cause to other people.

Travel Health Insurance

Medical insurance can assist with unforeseen foreign medical and dental costs as well as with finding foreign medical professionals and facilities. Coverage varies according to provider and cost, just like with other policies.

  • Foreign travel medical coverage: These policies cover medical expenses resulting from illness and injury sustained while traveling, and they can last anywhere from five days to a year or more.
  • Medical Evacuation: This may include medical evacuation for treatment as well as airlift transportation to a hospital.

Before acquiring insurance, find out if it extends coverage outside of the nation by speaking with your present health insurers. If you are sick or hurt while traveling, the majority of health insurance carriers cover "customary and reasonable" hospital bills; however, few will cover the expense of a medical evacuation.

Accidental Death and Dismembership (AD&D) Coverage

An AD&D policy compensates you or your surviving beneficiaries with a lump sum payment in the event of a significant injury or death caused by an accident. Three sections are typically provided by the insurance, covering both accidents and fatalities:

  • Flight accident insurance: Occurs when traveling on a commercial aircraft with a license.
  • Common carrier: Originating from using public transit like buses, trains, or ferries.
  • General travel: Taking place at any time when traveling.

Possible exclusions include death from illness or drug overdose. Furthermore, certain injuries—namely, those to the hand, foot, limb, or eyes—might not be covered. Each injury has a set of specified quantity limits.

You may not need accidental death coverage if you currently hold a life insurance policy. That being said, your life insurance policy may also pay benefits, so your beneficiaries will receive additional money from your travel insurance coverage.

Other Travel Insurance Coverage

The following categories of travel insurance may be added to your plan or package, depending on what you choose:

  • Identity theft resolution services
  • School activity coverage
  • Destination wedding coverage
  • Adventure sports coverage
  • Pet health as a reason for cancellation or delay
  • Hunting or fishing activities as a reason for cancellation or delay
  • Missed flight connections

How to Get Travel Insurance for Nepal Trip?

The price, coverage, and exclusions of travel insurance vary. There is coverage for annual, multiple, and single travel. You must complete an application for travel insurance with information about your trip, including the following:

  • Travelers going
  • Destination
  • Travel dates
  • Date of first payment toward your trip

The insurance provider evaluates the data in accordance with underwriting standards to determine the cost and terms of policy issuance. If your application is approved, the business will provide you with a travel insurance policy. You can apply with another insurance provider if your application is denied by the company.

You usually have ten to fifteen days after receiving your policy to check the fine print in the contract. You can return the policy for a refund if you're not happy with it. Examine the papers to make sure the plan you bought covers the following and doesn't have too many loopholes:

  • Emergency medical care and transport back to your home town.
  • High enough limits to cover your costs or damages
  • The destination you're traveling to
  • Your trip duration or number of trips
  • All activities you plan to enjoy
  • Preexisting conditions and people of your age

Take note of any exclusions as you read through. For instance, the kinds of property insured, if the airline is responsible for losing or damaging property, and the extent of such coverage.

Holidays that are successful and stress-free are impossible without adequate insurance. Please be sure the insurance plan you select covers all of the activities you want to conduct. The insurance you purchase for a climbing adventure is not the same as the insurance you get for a trek.

Final Thoughts

Travel insurance primarily comes in four forms: medical expense, baggage and personal effects, medical cancellation or interruption, and accidental death or aircraft accident. Make sure you have coverage through your credit card, your own health or auto insurance, or both before purchasing a policy.

We recommend that you thoroughly research the plan and make sure the policy best suits your trip before purchasing travel insurance. You can provide a duplicate of your insurance evidence to your family for future use, and you should always have it with you. Travel Insurance For Trekking In Nepal – What You Need (And What You Need To Know)

Post Template

No one likes to play ‘worst case scenario’, but when it comes to hiking, there are certain risks involved. Taking out good travel insurance for trekking in Nepal is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Unlike standard travel insurance. Trekking insurance is a specific type of cover for people who are exposed to high altitudes, avalanches, and adventure-related mishaps in a foreign country.

In this guide, I’ll talk about why you need trekking insurance and what it should cover. I’ll also put you on to some of the best international trekking covers as trusted by adventurers around the world.

Do You Need Travel Insurance For Hiking In Nepal?

Travel insurance is not mandatory, but many Nepal trekking companies will request that you have hiking insurance to join their tours. Most agencies recommend that you are covered for a minimum of $100,000 plus emergency medical evacuation.

It might seem like an unnecessary use of precious travel funds but insurance is one of those things it’s better to ‘have and not need' than  to 'need and not have’. Even if it’s not strictly required, I wouldn’t leave home without at least a basic cover policy.

Risks While Trekking In Nepal

Altitude sickness.

High altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a common condition that can affect trekkers and climbers. It is hard to say exactly who will be affected by AMS but its usually seen in those who ascend to high altitudes too quickly without proper acclimatization .

Many trekking routes in Nepal involve hiking to high elevations with a risk of altitude sickness. Hikes in Nepal that pose a risk of high altitude sickness include Everest Base Camp , Annapurna Circuit trek , Langtang Valley hike and Manaslu Circuit . All of these have passes and viewpoints 5000m (16, 400 ft) or above.

Symptoms of altitude sickness can range from mild to severe. These may include headaches, nausea and shortness of breath. In severe cases, altitude sickness can lead to life threatening cerebral or pulmonary edema .

World Nomads

Trekking Accidents

It’s not worth over-stressing about it but accidents in the mountains and on hiking routes can and do happen. Even small injuries like a sprain or pulled muscle can be a big problem on a trek.

High altitudes can cause you to feel dizzy and disorientated, this increased the risk of accidents. The high altitudes also worsen existing health problems including any heart or respiratory issues.

Also keep in mind that you will be in a foreign country and the healthcare system may be a little different to what you are used to. It’s better to have insurance that will cover the best possible hospital care and relocation back to your own country if necessary.

Although the risk of an avalanche or landslide is rare, these do happen on hiking routes in Nepal. During the cold months (December to February) the risk of avalanches is typically highest. Avalanches are also frequent in the spring (March to May) as ice packs start to melt.

According to the  Nepal National Mountain Guide Association  (NNMGA), avalanches in Nepal cause an average of 12 deaths per year. In 2015, a massive earthquake triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest. This freak accident killed 19 people at the Everest Base Camp (admittedly all of them were climbers, not hikers).

What Should Your Trekking Insurance Cover?

Medical, doctor, insurance

As previously mentioned, accidents are always a risk while hiking. This is even more so at high altitudes. Your Nepal trekking insurance should be enough to cover hospitalization and treatment in a worst-case-scenario.

Evacuation By Helicopter

If something does go wrong in the mountains, your only exit option is by air. If you have to pay out of pocket, a helicopter evacuation will cost anywhere from $2000.

According to a 2020 published paper , between 2016 & 2017, a single hospital in Nepal (CIWEC hospital) received 1,354 helicopter evacuated patients. The vast majority of these patients were from the Everest region. Some of these evacuations were probably an over-reaction. Still, its obviously a risk worth considering.

Cover for helicopter rescue is especially vital for peak climbing. It is an important factor when calculating the cost of climbing Everest and other 8000ers.

Baggage Loss Or Theft

Imagine getting to Nepal only to find your trekking boots did not make the trip. Stolen, lost or delayed gear could ruin your whole adventure. Make sure your insurance covers baggage (and will pay out fairly quickly) so that you can afford to replace what you need and get going again.

Expenses For Delayed And Cancelled Flights

Natural disasters and weather are beyond our control. This doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead for unwanted situations. Flights in Nepal can be canceled or delayed for days (even weeks) due to bad weather. Good travel insurance should cover unforeseen expenses including accommodation while you wait for rescheduled flights.

General Health Cover

Insurance is not only for trekking. For one thing, Asia's local food does not agree with everyone! A good plan should cover doctors' appointments and prescribed medicine (whether for flu, COVID or an upset stomach). Most travel insurance will also cover limited dentistry work.

Why Is Travel Insurance For Nepal So Expensive?

There are a lot of travel insurance products on the market at an equally wide range of prices. It’s tempting to go with a cheap option. Although there are some decent choices available, the low-budget insurance plans will not cover what you need for high-altitude trekking in Nepal.

Over recent years, Nepal has seen a steep increase in tourist numbers. There has also been an exponential increase in the number of claims for helicopter rescues. Not all of these claims have been legit. There have been several scams where rescue companies paid travelers to claim for unnecessary (or non-existent) helicopter services.

Understandably, this has made many travel insurers hesitant to include air rescue in their cover. Those that do, price their policies accordingly.

Best Travel Insurance For Trekking In Nepal

I am by no means an insurance expert. These recommendations are based on my own experience with insurance companies and those of travelers I’ve met along the way. You should always read the policy fine print and ask a ton of ‘what if’ questions before signing up for insurance.

1. World Nomads

For years, World Nomads has been our number-one pick for travel insurance. They offer emergency evacuation and medical assistance for trekking in Nepal. This insurer provides all aspects of cover including baggage and repatriation in the event of an accident and trip delay cover (including weather-related delays). World Nomads is also an excellent choice for remote workers as they cover equipment including cameras and laptops.

2. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz has been around for years. They are professionals in all types of insurance including travel cover. Alianz Travel sells a range of plans depending on what type of benefits you want to include.

3. Travelex Insurance Services

Travelex is another reliable insurer. They cover all types of international trips and have specific packages for backpacking and long term travel. You can select from different, upgradable cover plans so you will only pay for what you need. Most of their plans cover emergency medical evacuation and travel delays.

More than 50,000 Brits visit Nepal every year (as of 2019), most of them seeking thrills and adventure that is impossible to find everywhere else. After all, this small South Asian country is the home of Mount Everest and 8 of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Mt. Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. This makes Nepal the dream destination for most avid hikers and mountaineers.

Of course, there’s more to Nepal than its majestic mountain ranges. The country is also home to numerous world heritage sites including the Lumbini monastery — the Buddha’s birthplace. Its lush national park teeming with rare and exotic wildlife including the Himalayan Black Bear, Bengal Tigers, and the enigmatic Snow Leopard.

Whether you’re looking to go trekking in Nepal or take part in its myriad of cultural excursions, Nepal is an adventure unlike anywhere in the world.

If you’re reading this, a trip to Nepal is probably something you’ve been looking forward to for a long time. However, before you book your travel to Nepal, it’s important to ensure that you have good travel insurance. While most Brits go back to their home country unscathed, there is no guarantee that that you’ll experience the same after your trip. Hence, it would be prudent to get travel cover if something goes wrong during your travel to Nepal.

Table of Contents

Trekking in Nepal and other activities — is it safe?

Except for climbing Mount Everest, Nepal’s tourist activities are relatively safe. The locals are generally religious and hospitable people who understand that tourism is a big part of their economy. Of course, that’s no reason to become complacent when you’re thousands of miles away from your home country.

Whether it’s trekking in Nepal or visiting some of the country’s scenic monasteries, Brits are advised to remain vigilant. You can start by making sure that you get a good travel cover policy. In some cases, you may be unable to enter the country without travel insurance (trekking and mountaineering).

Also, you would want to keep the following safety reminders in mind:

  • Never go anywhere alone, especially if you’re a woman. Doing so would most likely attract unwanted attention.
  • Respect cultural norms — dress conservatively and refrain from public displays of affection, especially around religious sites, cities, and even inside a national park.
  • Like many of the least developed nations in the world, theft is a common occurrence in Nepal, especially around popular tourist attractions in Kathmandu (the capital of Nepal). Hence, you would do well not to leave your valuables unattended. Avoid wearing expensive jewellery in public as it’ll only increase your risk of being targeted by criminal elements.
  • Steer clear of political demonstrations which can sometimes turn violent. In many cases, protests are accompanied by general strikes, affecting your access to businesses and transportation services. Keep tabs on the local news about on-going protests and follow the advice of local authorities.
  • If you’re looking to go trekking/mountaineering in Nepal, make sure that your travel cover includes emergency evacuation. Hire a reputable guide and make sure that you are physically fit to endure such activities. Climbing the Himalayas is no small feat, and it’s no secret that people have died trekking the Himalayas.
  • Use tourist buses for transportation. Avoid getting on overnight buses which are often poorly maintained. If you must travel by boat, make sure that the vessels are not overloaded, and that weather conditions are fair.
  • Air quality can be an issue in Kathmandu and other major cities due to its location (landlocked between India and China — countries with some of the most polluted cities in the world due to heavy industrialisation).

Keep a mobile phone handy at all times. In an emergency, call the Nepalese Police department (100) or the Nepalese Fire Department (101). Please note that there is no 24-hour public central emergency service operating in the country (even in Kathmandu). That said, you can call on private emergency services for help. For this reason, you would want to keep contact numbers of the nearest hospitals in your area in the event of a personal accident.

Note that if you do end up getting treated in a clinic or hospital, you will need to contact us as soon as possible as part of your claims process.

Healthcare for Brits in Nepal and the need for travel insurance

Before you leave for your trip to Nepal, you would want to review the National Travel Health Network and Centre ( NaTHNaC ) for information on potential health problems and recommended vaccines that will help keep you safe.

Please note that if you suffer an injury or health problem during your travel to Nepal, you’ll have no access to free 24-hour health services like you would in the UK. That’s why it’s important to get a travel cover to mitigate health-related expenses in the event of a personal accident and other emergencies. To make matters worse, patients with no travel insurance are often denied help until they could pay for the medical services upfront.

The Nepalese government also has rules regarding the limited amount and type of medicines you can bring into the country. If you have prescription medications, you’d want to contact the Nepalese embassy to clarify these rules and make sure that you’re allowed to carry the medicine with you during your trip to Nepal.

NHS also recommends taking a copy of your prescription along with a note from your doctor stating that you need the medicine to manage a pre-existing health condition.

Do you need to disclose pre-Existing Health Conditions when applying for travel insurance in Nepal?

When applying for a travel cover policy, the rule of thumb is that you need to be truthful about any pre-existing health condition you might have. Of course, the only exception is if the policy provider specifically tells you that you’re not required to disclose it (under certain terms and conditions).

You might think that hiding your pre-existing health condition would allow you to obtain travel insurance at a lower cost. In truth, however, doing so will only negate your personal liability cover as you’d be giving your policy provider a strong pretext to deny your claim in the event of an accident or injury.

Also, depending on the nature of your pre-existing health condition, disclosing it may not necessarily lead to an increase in premium. Even if it did, it’s no doubt a small price to pay compared to getting sick or injured in Nepal, then getting refused coverage due to an unfortunate technicality.

Most reputable service providers give free screening for thousands of health conditions and offer enough coverage to mitigate healthcare and repatriation expenses while in Nepal. This gives you peace of mind knowing that somebody has your back in case you run into any problems during your trip. While you’re more likely to return from your trip unscathed, trekking the Himalayas or exploring the cultural wonders of Kathmandu is too great a risk without adequate travel insurance.

What pre-existing health conditions don’t you need to disclose to your policy provider?

As mentioned earlier, some insurance companies may not require you to disclose certain pre-existing health conditions. Exactly what these conditions vary from one insurance company to another. The policy provider’s prerogative is to determine which pre-existing health condition requires disclosure and which ones do not.

For instance, we at Emerald Life won’t ask clients who are HIV+ to disclose their status provided that they’ve undergone at least 3 months of antiviral treatment and an undetectable viral load (or at least fewer than 50ppm according to the latest test results). The client must also have a CD4 count of more than 350 with no advice to switch to a different type of antiviral drug.

The human body is incredibly complex, and many things can go wrong, even in the short term. As a result, it can be tough for insurance providers to judge which health condition warrants disclosure when applying for travel insurance. Furthermore, insurance companies have all the rights reserved for making changes to their policy concerning pre-existing health conditions.

In general, you can expect your insurance provider to ask you the following questions:

  • Do you currently take prescription medication? What kind?
  • Have you undergone any medical procedure over the last two years? If so, what kind?
  • Have you undergone any kind of surgical operation as an out-patient or in-patient ( in a hospital or clinic) over the last two years? What was it for?
  • Are you currently scheduled for any kind of medical treatment or investigation? What kind?
  • Are you currently suffering from a debilitating or terminal illness?

Note that these questions’ goal is to determine whether or not you have a health condition that may affect your health during your trip to Nepal. Hence, it’s important that you answer truthfully and disclose everything your policy provider needs to know about your health. They’ll let you know whether or not your pre-existing health condition has any bearing on your application for travel insurance in Nepal.

Are you wondering whether your pre-existing condition warrants disclosure? Contact us to start the screening process.

What to Look For When Shopping for Nepal Travel Insurance

Now that we’ve gone over the significance of getting Nepal travel insurance, you might be wondering what factors you need to consider before buying one? It’s not as difficult as you might think and you just have to stick with the main reason why it’s a good idea to get travel insurance in the first place.

After all, you can’t expect to fully enjoy everything that Nepal has to offer while worrying about what you’re going to do if something does go wrong on your trekking trip (or whatever it is that you’re looking to do in Nepal).

Consider the following factors before you get multi or single trip travel insurance for your trip to Nepal:

Repatriation and Medical Cover

The most important part of any travel insurance policy is emergency medical expenses cover. Typically ranging from £5 million to £10 million – the higher in our case – this covers your costs if you become ill or injured in Nepal and require medical treatment. Imagine getting injured while trekking the Himalayas, requiring a helicopter to airlift you to the nearest hospital or clinic. As you might imagine, the cost of such services can be staggering.

Medical expenses should include repatriation cover. If your condition means you have to return to the UK urgently, then there is a cover for transporting you along with any necessary medical equipment and staff.

Before you leave for Nepal, it’s important to ensure that your travel insurance policy offers enough coverage to pay for emergency medical expenses and repatriation back to the UK.

Here at Emerald Life, we provide personal coverage of up to ÂŁ10,000,000 with our Nepal travel insurance.

Note that insurance companies have all rights reserved for making changes to their travel cover. Hence, it’s a good idea to carefully check the latest terms and conditions before you sign off on a policy.

Travel Insurance Nepal Cancellation and Curtailment Cover

If you are ill or injured before you travel, then you may have to cancel your trip. Some policies will also cover you if a close relative is ill or injured, or your home is burgled, and you have to cancel as a result. These situations are perfect examples of why it’s a good idea to make sure that your travel insurance comes with cancellation and curtailment cover.

As the name implies, a personal cancellation cover lets you reclaim at least a portion of the money you’ve lost should you need to cancel your trip. For example, let’s say that you’ve already paid for your flight and hotel accommodations in Nepal. Unfortunately, you figured in a car accident a week before your trekking trip which left you unable to push through with your plans.

Cancellation cover can help you recover at least some of the money you’ve paid in preparation for your trip. Note that cancellation cover only applies to specific circumstances that genuinely constitute an emergency. This includes (but not limited to):

  • An illness, injury, or the sudden death of a family member, business partner, or travel companion.
  • Getting your home burglarised or ravaged by fire, flood, and other natural disasters.
  • Unexpectedly getting retrenched or losing your job.
  • You are a member of the UK armed forces, police, or medical personnel and have been specifically ordered to cancel your trip to attend to your duties.
  • Pregnant for 30+ weeks and ordered by your doctor to cancel your trip to prevent potential complications.

If you expect to make multiple trekking trips to Nepal in a given year, you can probably secure a better deal if you sign up for annual multi-trip travel insurance.

An annual policy will help you save time since you don’t have to reapply before every departure. More importantly, annual multi-trip insurance cost is bound to be cheaper than obtaining numerous single trip policies over the course of a year.

Nepal Travel Insurance Luggage cover

Luggage can get lost when traveling to Nepal, and if that happens, it’ll be a major inconvenience in your travel plans. That’s why you need travel insurance that will reimburse you per day (up to a certain number of days) for the trouble should it happen.

For luggage delays of more than 24 hours, Emerald Life offers baggage cover which serves as compensation for the inconvenience and covers the cost of essential replacement clothing and toiletries if your baggage is delayed on your outward journey, up to the amount specified.

If the luggage is lost (missing for more than 21 days), you’ll be paid the amount stipulated in the luggage cover for the accidental loss, damage, or theft of your baggage and personal effects, up to the amount specified in your luggage cover.

Travel Insurance Nepal Excesses and Exclusions

When it comes to buying travel insurance, people often make the mistake of just looking at the final price. It is likewise important to check on any excesses you have to pay should you need to make a claim on the policy.

Also known as a “deductible”, travel insurance excess refers to the amount that clients need to pay to process a claim on their travel insurance. The only problem is that some travel insurance policies start very cheap but then charge high deductibles. As a result, the claims process can end up being very expensive despite having the insurance.

In some cases, the excesses are so high that it’s not worth claiming the policy. This practice is prevalent among cheap travel insurance policies looking to bait unwary clients with low prices, only to slap them with high deductibles when it’s time to make a claim.

Therefore, make sure you buy a Nepal travel insurance policy that balances a good price with reasonable excesses. Also, there may be other exclusions that reduce the premium precisely because payouts are limited. If you need travel insurance, then it is advisable to make sure that you have the best cover you can afford.

Most travel insurance policies will also include different excesses for different types of claims, and you can find these in your policy documentation. Still, generally, the medical excess is the most significant and the one thing that you would want to look out for. After all, it’s the one thing that matters should you fall ill or get injured while traveling to Nepal.

Do you need a travel insurance policy to visit Nepal?

It can be argued that the real question is — can you afford not to have Nepal travel insurance when you leave for Nepal? After all, there is no way to guarantee that nothing will go wrong during your trip. More so, if your idea of an adventure is climbing the Himalayas, jungle safaris, whitewater rafting or exploring the maze-like streets of Kathmandu.

Again, tourists have no free access to local healthcare services when visiting the country, and private health care can be limited and costly. Without insurance, every medical-related expense, including emergency evacuation, doctor’s appointment, medicines, and hospital confinement will have to come out of your own pocket. As you might imagine, the total cost can be significant.

Nepal travel insurance should cover the cost of treatment if you fall ill or become injured during your travel. This gives you peace of mind while enjoying the wonders of Nepal, confident that you’d be able to get all the help you need without having to worry about whether you can afford it or not. Such assurance is important, especially when engaging in activities in remote regions away from Kathmandu.

While no one expects to get sick or become injured while holidaying in Nepal, accidents can happen. The last thing you need is to be denied local emergency services and medical treatment thousands of miles away from home. If things go south, it’s always helpful to know that you have travel insurance to rely on.

Nepal Visa Requirements for Indians

In 1950, the India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed between the two countries which allowed the free movement of goods and people between them. While citizens from all countries require a Nepal tourist visa, India is the only country that has no such requirement. Indians can enter Nepal without any visa provided they have the right credentials issued by the Indian Government. Hence, Indians don’t need to worry about the Nepal Visa application before visiting the country.

Is there a Nepal Visa on Arrival for Indians?

Due to the peace treaty between India and Nepal, there is no requirement for a visa for an Indian citizen to travel to Nepal. Hence, there is no visa on arrival for Indian travellers. This means that you don’t have to budget for the Nepal Visa fees for Indian citizens too. Indians can travel to Nepal using their passport and valid Voter’s ID/Election card. In fact, according to Article 7 of the treaty, Indians can reside in Nepal without any restrictions too.

Documents Needed by Indians to Travel to Nepal?

Since there is no visa for Indian citizens, the Nepalese Immigration Department will want to see a valid document that proves the nationality of Indian travellers.

If you are travelling by air, then you need to submit one of these two documents as proof of your identity:

  • Valid Indian Passport
  • Valid Voter’s ID Card issued by the Election Commission of India

It is important to note that other Government-issued identity documents like Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Driving Licence, etc. are not accepted for travel to Nepal.

Nepal revives air carriers’ liability and insurance legislation plan

Nepal revives air carriers’ liability and insurance legislation plan

Sangam Prasain

The civil aviation ministry has revived the stalled process of enacting separate air carriers' liability and insurance legislation for domestic carriers, years after adopting the Montreal Convention 1999 that makes international airlines liable in case of death or injury to passengers.

Nepal adopted the Montreal Convention of 1999 on December 15, 2018 .

The draft of the air carriers' liability and insurance bill from domestic carriers, which proposes a five-fold increase in compensation for death or injury, has been in the making since Nepal ratified the Montreal Convention.

The draft bill was extensively discussed with the stakeholders before finalising it in 2020.

However, successive tourism ministers failed to table the bill in Parliament.

The draft bill was then kept on hold without much explanation.

“We received the Cabinet’s approval to prepare the bill three days ago,” said Buddhi Sagar Lamichhane, joint-secretary at the ministry. “We have now expedited the process to pass the bill at the earliest.”

The draft bill, however, is already ready.

In 2020, the ministry finalised the draft bill on a separate liability system for domestic flyers, after the compensation provision, including unlimited liability claims in the Montreal Convention, was much higher for domestic carriers.

The long-delayed air carriers' liability and insurance draft bill has proposed a five-fold increase in compensation for death or injury.

As per the planned law, domestic airlines have to pay a minimum compensation of $100,000 for the injury or death of a passenger. Currently, the minimum compensation for passenger death on a domestic flight is $20,000.

Under the Montreal Convention of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), carriers have to pay 128,821 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) or ($171,018) if the damage was due to the carrier's negligence or a wrongful act or omission.

SDRs are an interest-bearing international reserve asset used by the International Monetary Fund.

In any crash under the Montreal Convention 1999, the families of the victims have a right to claim unlimited compensation if it is a wrongful death.

The draft bill says that the carrier should make an advance payment where it determines it is necessary to meet the immediate economic needs of, and hardships suffered by, a passenger or the families of the victims.

According to the proposed law, a compensation claim should be filed with the airline or its agents within 60 days of the incident or accident. The carrier’s liability limitation for cargo lost, damaged or delayed shall be $20 per kg, if the damage was caused or contributed to by the negligence of the carriers, it says.

Under the Montreal Convention 1999, effective as of December 28, 2019, a carrier's liability limitation for cargo lost, damaged or delayed shall be 22 SDRs per kg ($29.21 per kg) in the case of destruction, loss, damage or delay concerning cargo carriage.

Similarly, carriers have to pay 1,288 SDRs ($1,709.90) for each passenger in case of destruction, loss, damage or delay with respect to baggage.

Likewise, 5,346 SDRs ($7,097.16) should be compensated for each passenger in relation to damage caused by delay in the carriage of persons.

The domestic carriers, however, have been objecting to a few clauses like the carrier’s liability limitation for delays and unlimited compensation, which according to them, was not practical in a country like Nepal.

Airlines officials say that given Nepal’s geographical terrain, climatic behaviour and airport facilities, Nepali airlines cannot afford to bear liability for delays.

Tourism ministry officials say the proposed legislation is a modified version of the Montreal Convention 1999 because there are several clauses that domestic airlines would not be able to comply with.

“There are some issues which need a wide consultation with the stakeholders before we table the bill at the Cabinet,” said Lamichhane.

After consultations with the stakeholders, the draft bill will be sent to the finance and law ministries for their comments on the relevant clauses.

“Then it will be tabled at the Cabinet for approval to present the bill in Parliament,” said Lamichhane. The process could take at least two months.

According to ministry officials, frequent changes of ministers have slowed it down. “Some ministers lasted a long time, but they were not bothered about the bill,” the officials added.

Lamichhane said they could not table the bill because Parliament was prorogued several times in the past.

As a result of the delay, passengers who died in the Yeti Airlines plane crash in January 2023 missed out on compensation in millions of rupees.

The Yeti Airlines tragedy in Pokhara was Nepal’s 104th crash and the third biggest in terms of casualties.

According to Nepal’s civil aviation body , more than 900 people have died in air crashes in the country since the first disaster was recorded in August 1955.

The biggest air accident occurred on September 28, 1992, when an Airbus A310 belonging to Pakistan International Airlines slammed into a hillside at Bhattedanda near Kathmandu Valley, killing 167 people on board.

Earlier, on July 31, 1992, an Airbus A310 of Thai Airways crashed in Ghyangphedi, killing 113 on board.

Nepal’s domestic airlines—nine fixed-wing operators and 12 helicopters—flew 4.15 million passengers in 2023.

Event:   Spring Break Travel

Location:   Mexico

Travel Smart – Be Informed:  Each year, thousands of U.S. citizens visit Mexico during spring break.  While the vast majority travel safely, visitors should consider the following when planning their vacation or traveling in Mexico:

  • Crime:  Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations.  Travelers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations.  See the  Mexico Travel Advisory  for specific information for each Mexican state.  U.S. citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum, especially after dark.
  • Drugs:  Drug possession and use, including medical marijuana, is illegal in Mexico and may result in a lengthy jail sentence.  U.S. citizens have become seriously ill or died in Mexico after using synthetic drugs or adulterated prescription pills.
  • Unregulated Alcohol:  Unregulated alcohol may be contaminated, and U.S. citizens have reported losing consciousness or becoming injured after consuming alcohol that was possibly tainted.
  • Pharmaceuticals:  Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients.  Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • Sexual Assault:  U.S. citizens have been victims of rape and sexual assault.  Perpetrators may target inebriated or isolated individuals or may employ drugs that alter the victim’s physical or mental state.
  • Drowning:  Some beaches have strong undercurrents and rip tides.  Beaches may lack lifeguards, warnings, or signs of unsafe conditions.
  • Medical Emergencies:  An illness or accident could result in the need to seek medical treatment or hospitalization in Mexico.  Private hospital prices can be higher than those in the United States.  Many facilities require payment (sometimes only in cash) either before providing treatment or before discharging a patient.
  • Guns and Ammunition:  All guns and even small amounts of ammunition are illegal in Mexico.  Firearms and other weapons violations may result in lengthy jail time.
  • Arrests:  Drunk and disorderly behavior, public urination, and open alcohol containers in vehicles are illegal in Mexico.  If you break Mexican law, you can be arrested.
  • Immigration:  Violating the terms of your stay in Mexico can result in steep fines and detention.

Actions to Take:

  • Read the  Mexico Travel Advisory  and  Country Information Page  for details on travel throughout Mexico, including entry requirements.
  • Enroll in the State Department’s  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  to receive up-to-date information on safety conditions in Mexico and to help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency.
  • Call 911 in an emergency.  Although there may be English-speaking operators available, it is best to seek the assistance of a Spanish speaker to place the call.
  • Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage in Mexico, or purchase travel insurance that covers you in Mexico.  Seek coverage that includes medical evacuation.  Confirm costs of medical treatment in advance, when possible.
  • Avoid strong currents and do not swim after drinking or when warning flags note unsafe conditions.
  • Drink responsibly and always watch your drink.  If you begin to feel ill, seek medical attention immediately.  Report cases of suspected unregulated or contaminated alcohol to the Mexican Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (COFEPRIS) by  filing a report online  at the COFEPRIS website, call the COFEPRIS call center at +52 01-8—033-5050, or visit a COFEPRIS office.
  • Know your drinking companions and stay in a group of friends who have your safety in mind when you are in clubs and bars, walking in dimly lit areas, or in a taxi at night.  Obey Mexican law and remember Mexican laws may differ from U.S. laws.
  • Regularly monitor your credit or debit card accounts to ensure there are no unauthorized transactions.  Limit the amount of cash you carry in public, exercise caution when withdrawing cash, and avoid ATMs in isolated or unlit areas.
  • Be aware of your safety and protect your personal possessions when using public transportation.  Use radio taxis or those from “sitio” taxi stands.  Application-based car services such as Uber and Cabify are available in many Mexican cities, and generally offer another relatively safe alternative to taxis.
  • Keep friends and family at home informed of your travel plans, especially if traveling alone.
  • Consider downloading the “Guest Assist” application on your smart phone if traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, or other areas in the state of Quintana Roo.  The Mexican government provides information on emergency services and assistance for tourists via the app and their  website .
  • Keep your passport and entry permit (FMM), if applicable, in a safe place.  Confirm the date you must depart Mexico.
  • See our  advice for cruise passengers , particularly those with underlying health conditions.
  • Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate if you need assistance.

An immigrant visa is a document issued by a U.S. consular officer abroad that allows you to travel to the United States and apply for admission as a legal permanent resident (LPR). An immigration inspector of U.S. Customs and Border Protection of the Department of Homeland Security makes the final decision as to whether or not to admit you as an LPR. Once you are admitted as an LPR, you generally have the right to live and work in the United States permanently. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services of the Department of Homeland Security will mail your permanent resident card (often called a “green card”) to your new address in the United States, usually within three months of your entry into the United States. Please see 9 FAM 502.1-3 for a list of classification symbols and a brief description of each.

Getting an immigrant visa usually means that you will be able to live and work in the United States for as long as you want. A nonimmigrant visa, on the other hand, is generally for short-term visitors to the United States. You cannot stay in the United States permanently on a nonimmigrant visa, and you generally cannot work. A nonimmigrant visa is sometimes informally called a “tourist visa” but can be issued for reasons other than tourism, such as medical treatment, business or study. Please see our nonimmigrant visa page for more information.

There are three basic methods for obtaining an immigrant visa: 1.through a family relationship with a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident 2.through employment 3.through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (the visa lottery) Most applicants in Mexico obtain their immigrant visas via family relationships. The first step in obtaining a family-based immigrant visa is for your relative (the petitioner) to file a Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative) by mail with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security. Once your relative has filed a petition for you, you may check its status by accessing the USCIS Case Status Search Page. You may obtain an immigrant visa through employment rather than through a family member. More information on obtaining an immigrant visa through employment rather than through a family member is available on USCIS’s Green Card through a Job page. Please see the Fiscal Year 2016 Diversity Visa Entry Instructions. Note that the registration period for 2015 has closed. You may check this page for the Fiscal Year 2016 Diversity Visa Entry instructions in approximately September 2014.

Once U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) of the Department of Homeland Security approves an immigrant visa petition, USCIS sends the approved petition to the Department of State’s National Visa Center in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The Department of State’s National Visa Center (NVC) retains the approved petition until the case is ready for adjudication by a consular officer abroad. Petitions may remain at NVC for several months or for many years depending on the visa category and country of birth of the visa applicant. When a beneficiary’s (the beneficiary is the person on whose behalf the petition was filed) priority date appears about to become current, NVC sends the petitioner a bill for processing Form I-864 (Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the Act) and sends the beneficiary a Form DS-261 (Choice of Address and Agent). Once the Form I-864 processing fee is paid, NVC sends the Form I-864 and related instructions to the petitioner. Once NVC receives the completed Form DS-261 from the applicant, NVC mails a bill for the immigrant visa fee to the agent designated on the Form DS-261. Once the immigrant visa fee is paid, NVC sends the Instruction Package for Immigrant Visa Applicants to the agent. You or your agent must follow the directions in the Instruction Package for Immigrant Visa Applicants exactly. Failure to do so could result in a delay in your case and could even cause you to lose your chance to live and work in the United States. Once NVC completes its administrative processing of your case, the case file is sent to the Immigrant Visa Unit of the U.S. Consulate General, Ciudad Juarez. NVC will notify you by mail when this occurs.

The priority date, in the case of a family-based immigrant visa petition, is the date your petition was filed (not the date it was approved). Family-based immigrant visas are divided into two broad groups, immediate relative cases and preference cases. An immediate relative family-based petition is filed by a U.S. citizen on behalf of a spouse, parent, or child. A preference family-based petition is filed by a U.S. citizen on behalf of a son, daughter, or sibling; or by a legal permanent resident on behalf of a spouse, son or daughter, or child. Because the law does not limit the number of immediate relative visas, the priority date is normally irrelevant in such cases (please see the 9 FAM 502.1-1(d)(1) for the notable exception, related to the Child Status Protection Act). Workload permitting, the Immigrant Visa Unit may begin processing the approved petition upon receipt from the Department of State’s National Visa Center or the Department of Homeland Security. The priority date in a preference case, however, matters greatly. The law limits the number of preference visas available. All categories of family-based preference visas are currently “oversubscribed” (i.e., there are more people who want visas than there are visa numbers available). Your priority date, along with your visa category and nationality, determines whether a visa number is available or whether you must wait. Once your priority date is earlier than the cut-off date listed in the most recent Visa Bulle
