New zealand travel insurance, do i need travel insurance for new zealand, what does travel insurance for new zealand cover, best travel insurance for new zealand, frequently asked questions (faqs).

New Zealand has long been a popular holiday destination for Australians, owing to its proximity across the ditch and its catalogue of tourism hot-spots. In fact, each year (prior to the pandemic), there were about 1.6 million Aussies travelling to New Zealand, whether for the snow or summer scenery, or to simply visit friends or family who live there.

That figure is slowly creeping back up since travel restrictions have eased, and, despite the rising cost of living, this year and next are set to be big years for Australians travelling both near and far.

And while keeping travel budgets down is front of mind for many, there is one thing you should never skimp on when it comes to holidays: travel insurance. It may be tempting to forego travel insurance when heading to a place as peaceful and laid-back as New Zealand, but as our guide outlines, it’s still vital.

To take out a travel insurance policy for New Zealand, you may be able to select one that covers solely New Zealand specifically, one that covers Oceania, or a worldwide policy (that often excludes the US and Mexico due to healthcare costs).

There are also different types of policies that an individual can choose when travelling to New Zealand, which will depend on the duration of your trip and whether you are visiting more destinations than solely New Zealand.

There include:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months
  • Annual multi-trip: for more than one trip in the space of 12 months
  • Long-stay/backpacker: for an extended stay of 60 or 90 days or 12 or 18 months, and occasionally 24 months, depending on the provider.

Additionally, an annual multi-trip policy can work out more cost-effective than purchasing multiple single trip policies, but not always, so it can help to compare both types of policy.

Remember to check if a policy will only cover trips to New Zealand and Australia or worldwide destinations excluding the US and surrounding countries.

While travel insurance for New Zealand isn’t compulsory, it’s highly recommended. Good travel insurance will cover lost expenses should the policyholder need to cancel their trip due to an emergency, such as illness or bereavement. It will also pay out for damaged, lost or stolen baggage, as well as other items.

The total amount of baggage cover should reflect the value of all the belongings the policyholders are taking with them. There’s also usually a single item limit which dictates how much the policyholder can claim per item.

Another key component of travel insurance is medical-associated cover. According to Services Australia, the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) we have with New Zealand may cover some of your medical costs in the New Zealand public health system. However, certain emergencies may not be covered by this reciprocal agreement, especially if you are taking part in activities which are excluded from your insurance policy.

The New Zealand site also explains that while Australians are eligible for medical treatment in New Zealand, this does not preclude the need for insurance.

“As neither reciprocal agreement provides full coverage, travellers should hold comprehensive travel insurance, including health insurance,” the site notes.

In addition to coverage for medical and lost luggage, most policies for New Zealand cover travel delay and missed departures.

For those planning to take advantage of the country’s vast offering of adventure sports and activities, it is worth checking which are covered by a policy. As New Zealand is a popular snow destination, you will need to ensure that your policy covers snow sports if you wish to take part in these activities.

Often a policy covers around a hundred low-risk sports as standard. These include cricket, football and rugby. However, cover for bungee jumping (also popular in New Zealand) scuba diving and kite surfing among other higher risk activities, are likely to require an extra premium payment–just as snow activities would.

In any case, insurers usually only accept claims where the appropriate safety gear was worn, such as a helmet or harness. For activities such as scuba diving, policyholders will likely need to dive with a qualified instructor and follow official guidelines for any associated claims to be accepted.

What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?

Specific limitations and exclusions on cover differ between policies, but there are some common exclusions to bear in mind.

Most insurers will not accept ‘disinclination to travel’ (simply not wanting to travel) as a valid reason for a claim.

As stated previously, claims are often void if you have not followed the appropriate safety guidance and official guidelines for activities you participate in, even if the activities are covered.

Also, any claims arising from intoxication from drink or drugs, or disorderly behaviour, are likely to be rejected.

The best travel insurance for New Zealand will depend on your needs, such as whether you are taking part in snow sports or other adventure activities.

An easy way to compare travel insurance policies is to use an online comparison tool, or read through our pick of the leading travel insurance policies for Australians. Note that these are not location specific, so you will have to consider whether or not they include the extras you will require for your trip.

Do Australian citizens need travel insurance in New Zealand?

Will Australian health insurance cover me in New Zealand?

According to Services Australia, the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) we have with New Zealand may cover some of your medical costs in the New Zealand public health system. However, it is still highly encouraged that you purchase travel insurance so that you are protected for major medical events, sporting injuries or repatriation, as well as other benefits of travel insurance such as lost luggage and cancellation cover.

How do I get cover for snow sports in New Zealand?

To ensure you are covered for snow sports in New Zealand, you need to choose a travel insurance provider that includes snow cover within its base policy or as an optional add-on. It is most common for snow sports to be sold as an add-on, as the high-risk activity makes it more expensive than a policy without it would be.

To find policies that offer snow sports, you can read our pick of the best comprehensive travel insurance providers in Australia and then find quotes from each on their respective websites when choosing to include snow cover, if applicable.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for New Zealand?

New Zealand does not require visitors to have travel insurance to enter the country. But it is recommended if your health insurance does not extend to emergency treatment abroad.

Framed by forested mountains, volcanoes, glaciers and beaches, New Zealand is known for its natural wonder. But considering the country’s vast landscape and unpredictable weather, it can take hours to reach remote places in an emergency. Whether you’re hiking, mountain biking or snowboarding, travel insurance can reimburse the cost of medical care in case of injury.

New Zealand extends some health care coverage to temporary visitors with its Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) Program . However, the program may not cover all medical costs. Purchasing travel insurance can further protect you from financial burdens by offering additional medical coverage.

The weather in New Zealand is notoriously volatile , with extremes at each end of the year. Due to its geographical position, New Zealand is prone to natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Such events could cause trip cancellations or travel delays. Travel insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses (like your flight or hotel) if you experience an interruption due to severe weather.

Cancel for Any Reason Coverage

Cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage allows you flexibility to cancel your trip for reasons outside those predetermined by your travel insurance policy. However, since CFAR coverage is considered a policy add-on, it is more expensive than a standard policy.

This type of coverage is also subject to disclaimers, deductibles and restrictions. You must meet certain requirements to qualify for CFAR insurance, including:

  • You have to cancel your trip within a certain timeframe, like at least 48 hours before your departure date.
  • You only have a specific number of days after booking your trip to buy CFAR coverage. Most insurance providers have a limit of 10 to 21 days after booking.

Gear Theft Protection

You may want to bring cameras, sporting gear or other valuables if you’re planning to explore New Zealand’s diverse destinations. Whether you want to photograph the rich Maori culture or mountain bike through the forest, gear theft protection can help recoup the cost of lost or stolen goods.

Each travel insurance policy will include specific coverage limits and exclusions regarding stolen or damaged gear. Gear theft protection is worth considering if you wish to bring the following on your trip:

  • A laptop, tablet or smartphone
  • Professional camera and equipment
  • Sporting equipment (like a surfboard or kayak)

Note that your insurance may not cover the full value of your items, so review the policy wording and product disclosure statement carefully to determine your coverage. If the total of the items you plan to bring exceeds your benefit limit, consider leaving some items at home.

Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation

Although the ACC offers some medical coverage to non-residents, the program does not always cover the full cost of treatment. If your health insurance does not extend coverage in other countries, you can safeguard yourself with travel insurance for medical emergencies .

Travel medical insurance covers emergency medical expenses in the event of an injury or illness. Most providers also cover evacuation to your home country if you can’t receive health care locally and repatriation if you die while traveling.

A standard travel insurance policy may include the following medical emergency and assistance coverage:

  • Hospital admission costs
  • Surgical operations and related fees
  • Ambulance costs
  • X-rays and lab tests
  • Emergency dental fees

When booking your trip insurance, be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like asthma or high blood pressure. While some providers do not extend coverage for pre-existing conditions, others may offer a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver.

Travel medical insurance also may not extend to injuries sustained as a result of extreme sports, but some providers may offer add-on coverage. Read your policy’s full details for restrictions and exclusions.

Rental Car Protection

New Zealand boasts an extensive network of public transport, making it easy to travel around big cities like Auckland and Wellington. But you may prefer to rent a car to explore on your own schedule.

As a tourist, you can legally drive for up to 12 months in New Zealand as long as you have a current driver’s license. If your license isn’t in English, you’ll need to obtain an English translation. Otherwise, you can opt for an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) issued or written in English.

New Zealand requires rental car companies to include basic insurance for coverage against accidents. The level of protection varies by provider, but usually covers the following:

  • Collision damage waiver
  • Windshield protection
  • Roadside protection
  • Theft protection

The insurance will include an excess or deductible or the amount of money you pay before the insurance policy covers the costs. Your rental car provider may offer a daily fee in exchange for reducing or eliminating the excess.

For example, let’s say that your rental car agreement offers a standard policy with a $1,000 excess. If your rental vehicle is damaged and costs $3,000 to repair, you’ll only need to pay the $1,000. As long as you’ve met the terms and conditions in your contract, the rental company will cover the remaining $2,000.

While you can purchase travel insurance with rental car protection, it may not be necessary for a trip to New Zealand. Consider existing rental car coverage before adding more with a travel insurance policy.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Whether it’s extreme weather or natural disasters, unexpected circumstances can impact your trip to New Zealand. Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable costs like your flight, hotel or travel excursions if you have to cancel your trip due to the following reasons:

  • Death of a traveling companion or family member
  • Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
  • Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
  • Domestic or international terrorism
  • Legal obligations like jury or military duty

How Much Does New Zealand Travel Insurance Cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, personal details and travel logistics. Some providers offer single-trip plans for a one-time visit or annual multi-trip coverage if you travel more often.

Cheap travel insurance options are available if you are on a budget. To receive a quote from a provider, you’ll be required to submit the following information:

  • Destination country
  • Your country of residence
  • Age and the number of travelers
  • Trip duration
  • Total trip price

To help you determine average costs, we requested quotes from five travel insurance providers. The following quotes are based on a 35-year-old traveler from South Carolina traveling to New Zealand for two weeks in December. The total trip cost is $2,800.

*Costs were collected from each company’s website in May 2023.

Each of the above insurance plans includes the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption (including travel delays)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Emergency medical care
  • COVID-19-related medical care and trip cancellation

How Do I Get Travel Insurance for New Zealand?

Before you buy travel insurance for your New Zealand trip, check to see if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers some level of coverage. If you have private health insurance, it may include coverage for international travel and medical emergencies. Or you might have flight, rental car or other form of travel insurance through your credit card.

We recommend requesting a free quote from at least three travel insurance companies. Be sure to compare various trip insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, emergency assistance and trip cancellation. Make sure your chosen travel insurance covers what you need. Carefully review policy wording for exclusions and consider add-ons to cover additional expenses.

New Zealand Safety Tips

According to the Global Peace Index , New Zealand is ranked as the second-safest country in the world. But crime can still happen while traveling. We’ve included the below information and travel tips to help you safely navigate New Zealand.

Crime and Safety

New Zealand is considered a safe destination for travelers, but it is not crime-free. Be careful not to leave valuables in campervans or parked cars near trailheads or tourist spots. When in the big cities, avoid walking alone late at night or in unlit alleyways.

Day Trips, Tours and Excursions

With fjords, dormant volcanoes and hidden beaches, New Zealand boasts a diversity of day trips. But don’t overestimate your ability or underestimate the risks of exploring the great outdoors. Plan your adventures ahead of time, use a local guide or tourist service if necessary, and be sure to research the destination and weather.

Some tourists may also plan to visit both New Zealand and Australia on the same trip. If you purchase travel insurance, check to make sure your policy covers travel to multiple destinations.

As of January 2023, New Zealand has lifted all pandemic-related restrictions . International travelers are not required to provide a vaccination passport or negative PCR test to enter the country. You are not required to wear a mask on public transport but may still encounter mask advisories in medical facilities or other buildings.

You will be required to self-isolate for seven days if you contract the coronavirus while in New Zealand.

Is Travel Insurance for a New Zealand Vacation Worth It?

It’s ultimately up to you to decide if travel insurance is worth it for your New Zealand vacation. Standard travel insurance can offer coverage for unexpected trip cancellations, lost baggage, flight postponements and other travel inconveniences. Although New Zealand offers some medical coverage for foreigners, the country will not always cover the full cost of your care. Travel insurance can extend emergency medical coverage if you are hurt or get sick while abroad.

If you opt for a more comprehensive travel insurance plan, you can consider add-on options like CFAR coverage, rental car damage or sporting gear protection for added peace of mind.

Bungy jumping at Kawarau bungy centre

Does Cover-More travel insurance cover adventure activities when travelling in NZ?

New Zealand is the ultimate destination for adrenaline sports and exploring the great outdoors. A bucket list item for many Australian travellers to New Zealand is bungee jumping, so why not do it at the home of modern bungee – Kawarau Bridge?

From taking to the rivers with white water rafting, hiking in the pristine mountain wilderness, or taking to the air with skydiving, action-packed adventure activities can be your best – and most thrilling way – to experience New Zealand.

If you’re a thrill-seeker wanting to engage in several adventure activities while you’re in New Zealand, Cover-More can help protect you. Adventure activities often involve remote locations, so without the right level of insurance, you could be looking at a complicated and expensive evacuation if things don’t go to plan.

When you buy Cover-More travel insurance for New Zealand, we can provide cover for:

  • Over 80 automatically included activities – see our adventure activities page for the full list and the PDS for conditions.
  • Adventure Activities Cover: this additional coverage option including cover for the 80+ automatically included activities, plus cover for 30+ extra activities such as water-skiing and leisure quad biking, as well as less restrictions on certain automatically included activities like scuba diving.
  • Adventure+ Activities Cover: this option includes all activities covered by the Adventure Activities Cover option but includes another 20+ activities for thrill-seekers, such as skydiving and BMX riding for leisure.

For the full list of activities cover by both Adventure Activities Cover and Adventure+ Activities Cover, please read the PDS . If you choose to add either option of cover to your policy, an additional premium will apply.

Note: we don’t cover some especially high-risk activities, such as BASE jumping and running with the bulls – as well as sports activities in a professional capacity – so be sure to read the Product Disclosure Statement carefully.

True travel story: capsized kayak leads to evacuation

An adventurous couple’s NZ holiday came to an abrupt halt after their kayak capsized; in attempting to recover the kayak, one of the travellers cut their foot badly. They reached out to our Emergency Assistance team for help, who arranged for the couple to be evacuated the next morning so the customer could be properly treated by a leading doctor. The couple had to ultimately cancel their plans to hike a glorious part of New Zealand’s North Island, but, fortunately the couple, their evacuation and cancellation claim over $1,000 was covered by us.

Known as the winter wonderland for good reason, New Zealand has some of the most epic ski slopes in the world. Whether it's conquering Mt Ruapehu on the North Island or flying down the slopes of The Remarkables on the South Island, New Zealand has snow experiences to suit any level.

If you plan on hitting the slopes, we offer additional Snow Sports Cover to help protect you on the mountains, which can be added to your trip as an additional premium. This coverage option will provide cover for accidents or injuries that are sustained when on-piste skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling, helping you avoid any unnecessary medical bills.

If you’re someone who likes to go off-piste, you’ll want to consider our Snow Sports+ Cover, which includes all the activities on the base level snow cover, plus snow skiing or snowboarding off-piste and heli-skiing/boarding.

For full terms and conditions on both options to vary your cover – Snow Sports Cover and Snow Sports+ Cover – read the PDS and our dedicated winter sports page.

True travel story: snowboarding stack leads to fractured wrist

One unlucky Australian traveller fell while snowboarding on the slopes of NZ’s The Remarkables, hurting their arm as a result. The avid snowboarder quickly realised something was extremely wrong with their wrist, which now looked deformed. Paramedics applied a splint on the scene and transferred the injured traveller to Queenstown where X-rays identified a fractured wrist, and a cast was required to treat the winter sports injury. The customer was left with bills totalling over $600; however, our Cover-More team was able to take care of this thanks to the traveller’s smart decision to take out a travel insurance plan with Snow Sports Cover before travelling from Australia to New Zealand for their snow trip.

Milford Sound, New Zealand

One of the best ways to discover dramatic New Zealand is on a cruise. The country's remote coastlines and deep fjords are often best seen from the deck of a boat.

If you’re cruising trans-Tasman from Australia or starting a cruise after arriving in New Zealand, you should consider protecting your trip with travel insurance.

Many people are unaware that even when departing Australia, most medical expenses onboard cruises will not be covered by Medicare – so consider your cruise ship effectively a country of its own.

If you are cruising for two or more nights and buying a Cover-More policy to protect your trip, you will need to answer “Yes” to travelling on a cruise to have Cruise Cover applied to your policy for an additional premium. (This is not required for river cruises.) If you don’t, you will not be protected for any cancellation costs if you need to cancel your cruise or for the duration of your cruise.

Our Cruise Cover doesn’t only help protect you from unexpected and costly onboard medical costs and emergency evacuations – it includes cover for sea sickness, cabin confinement, and more.

For more information on covering your cruise in New Zealand with Cover-More, visit our Cruise Cover and Cruise Cover FAQs pages, or call us on 1300 72 88 22 to speak to a member of our team.

True travel stories: don’t rock the boat – or it might cost big

Flying across your cabin isn’t exactly the idyllic experience one expects when heading off on an exotic cruise, right? Well, one unfortunate traveller experienced this situation, which left them with more than $10,000 worth of medical expenses. When stormy seas and a freak wave hit this traveller’s cruise ship in the middle of the night, they were propelled backwards, hitting their neck and head at a high velocity. After a consultation with the onboard doctor who assessed their condition, our Cover-More team arranged for the traveller to be airlifted from the ship to a hospital on New Zealand’s South Island where a fractured neck was diagnosed. Once hospital treatment concluded and the patient was stable, our team arranged flights back to Australia. Thankfully, having Cruise Cover on their insurance policy, the expenses involved with travel cancellations and emergency evacuation were one thing this injured traveller didn’t have to worry about.

How can Cover-More travel insurance assist me in an emergency?

Emergencies can happen and it’s important you have the right support and assistance available when they do.

When you purchase a policy with us, you have access to our 24/7 in-house Emergency Medical and Travel Assistance , who are there to help when you need it most.

Known for flooding, earthquakes, and wild weather, New Zealand can be prone to natural disasters. If a rare event does occur, our Emergency Assistance team is never far away, no matter the time of day or night.

You can find out all the types of emergency support we offer and which contact numbers to use for our emergency assistance teams here .

Heading off on a road trip is one of the more popular ways of exploring New Zealand, and with our International Comprehensive+ and Comprehensive Travel Insurance Plans, you’ll have up to $5,000 of rental vehicle insurance excess cover.

If you choose our International Comprehensive+ Plan, we also provide rental vehicle comprehensive cover, which has a $10,000 benefit for the rental vehicle insurance excess and provides cover for misfuelling, lockout, cancellation of rental agreement fees, and more.

4 helpful tips for Australians driving in New Zealand:

  • Make sure your driver licence is valid in Australia as well as New Zealand before you leave
  • Snow and icy roads are a hazard; make sure you check the weather conditions and drive accordingly – take it slow.
  • We know you want to explore all the beauty New Zealand has to offer, but it’s important to stop and take breaks when heading off on a lengthy road trip.
  • Physical access to New Zealand’s ski resorts can be a difficult task because of the narrow and windy roads, so take extra caution when driving. Alternatively, most resorts offer a shuttle bus for those wanting a stress-free ride.

True travel stories: stray stones create more than just headaches

One of our Australian customers was grateful for their rental car vehicle excess cover when a flying stone from a passing truck smashed into the windscreen of their vehicle while travelling along a New Zealand road. The next day, a crack began to appear and grow, so the badly damaged windscreen had to be replaced. Fortunately for the customer, their Cover-More Travel Insurance policy saved them over $1,300 in excess costs.

Most common questions, 1. does your insurance cover damage to a rental cars and rental motorbikes.

Our Gold policies cover your rental car excess up to $8,000, but not motorbikes. For a rental car to be covered, you need to make sure that it is insured (confirmed by the rental company), as we do not pay for full damages to a rental car, only your excess.

3. Do you cover bungee jumping?

Yes, we cover all overseas medical expenses (unlimited), as well as permanent injury, and personal liability (policy payout limits apply to these) as related to bungee jumping, so long as you limit yourself to a maximum of three jumps.

5. Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?

A pre-existing medical condition is any condition for which you have received medical advice, treatment or medication in the last five years. Our policies cover many pre-existing conditions; to see if we cover yours, please complete our medical assessment online or over the phone. Please note, failing to declare a pre-existing condition can void your policy.

7. I’m taking out the top cover, am I covered for anything that can go wrong on my trip?

Our premiums would be astronomical if we could do that! There are limits and exclusions to all travel insurance policies, so we strongly advise you to read our product disclosure statement.

2. Do you cover flight delays after departure?

Under the InsureandGo Silver and Gold levels of cover, we will reimburse the cost of your necessary additional meals and accommodation expenses, if during a trip, any individual leg of your trip, is delayed for more than 12 hours, as long as you eventually go on the holiday.

The amount you can claim varies depending on the level of cover that you have purchased with us. Please refer to the policy wording documents for more information.

4. What does ‘excess’ mean?

Excess is the amount you pay us in the event of a claim being approved. Our excess applies per person, per event, per claim. You can choose the excess you want ($100, $200, $0), but be aware this will change the price of your initial premium. Our standard excess amount is $100 but you can decide to remove or double this amount through the purchase process.

6. I am overseas right now – can I buy, change or upgrade a policy?

You need to be in Australia at the time of purchasing your insurance. If you are overseas, we are unable to offer you new or different insurance. You may be eligible to extend the dates of your existing cover, so shoot us an email and find out.

New Zealand travel insurance: Common exclusions

Every travel insurance policy has things you won't be covered for. Common exclusions include:

  • If you purchase cover after the incident has occurred. For example, if you take cover out after you've been injured and need medical attention.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have any major medical conditions, make sure you let your insurer know before taking out a policy. Otherwise you won't be covered for claims related to that condition.
  • You travel despite government travel advice. For example, if you travel to areas that have a warning from Smartraveller, travel insurance may not cover you.
  • Incidents that occur while you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol. For example, if you go out drinking in Auckland, get injured and need medical attention, travel insurance won't cover you.
  • Driving vehicles without a licence. Like Australia, you won't be covered for medical costs or personal liability expenses if you drive without a licence in New Zealand.

What add-ons should I look for?

  • If you're getting adventurous, a lot of policies will offer adventure packs which can cover you for loads of activities like horse riding, hiking and zip lining.
  • New Zealand is a popular destination for snow sports. Whether you're skiing, snowboarding or cross country skiing, you'll often need to add extra cover to your policy.
  • If roadtripping is your thing, including car rental excess cover in your travel insurance is a sure way to save money. Some policies even automatically include it.

Washing machine on fire

Will I be covered for COVID-19?

Travel insurance can cover you for COVID-19 in New Zealand. A policy can cover you for the following:

  • Rearrangement costs if you catch the virus and need to change your plans. Lots of comprehensive travel insurance policies let you claim up to $5,000 towards these expenses.
  • Medical costs due to COVID-19. This can include hospital expenses and RATs if you catch COVID-19 while overseas (but you won't be covered for mandatory PCRs).
  • Expenses if you need to isolate. For example, if you catch COVID while you're overseas and need to push back your flight and stay in your accommodation longer.

How do I get cheap travel insurance for New Zealand?

  • Medical only or basic policies will generally be the cheaper policies on the market.
  • Use exclusive deals or promo codes to get a discount.
  • Opt for a higher excess. This will make your policy cheaper but more expensive if you have to claim.
  • Compare across a handful of travel insurers – they're not all the same.
  • Get the most value by buying your policy early. It means you're covered for longer while paying the same price.

When I travel, I don't want to fork out a lot for travel insurance. I always get something above the bare minimum though which usually only covers medical-only expenses. Flight disruptions and delayed luggage are really common, so look for a cheap policy that covers me for these things.

What do I do in emergencies?

For emergencies: call 111 (police), 111 (ambulance) or 111 (fire).

In a medical emergency, call for help and then contact your insurer on their emergency assistance line.

Australian permanent residents need to apply online for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) to enter New Zealand.

Civil unrest, security risks, threat of terrorist attack and crime are a concern in New Zealand, but you should still be eligible for travel insurance. It won't cover all of these situations but it can help cover medical costs, stolen belongings and much much more.

My family of 5 is traveling to New Zealand for just over four weeks from early December to early January. I am wondering if we need to get travel insurance or not? I know basic medical is covered as we are covered by Medicare and New Zealand recognises that as cover for them.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your comment.

Australians can access New Zealand’s public health care system in an emergency, but travel insurance is still essential. New Zealand and Australia have a reciprocal health care agreement, meaning that Australian travellers can access New Zealand’s public health service in an emergency, and vice versa. You’ll still have to pay some fees for treatment and medication (you’ll be charged the same amount as a New Zealand resident) and it’s important to remember the agreement isn’t a replacement for travel insurance – which is always a necessity. Remember to take your Medicare card with you – you’ll need it, along with your passport, to prove that you’re eligible.

Please fill out the Travel insurance form to get quotes for your trip to New Zealand. Please ensure you review the relevant Product Disclosure Statements/Terms and Conditions when comparing your options before making a decision on whether it is right for you. You can also contact the provider if you have specific questions.

Regards, Jhezelyn

Travel insurance for New Zealand during COVID-19

The trans-tasman bubble is open, so what does travel insurance cover when travelling to new zealand.

Stock images:  Getty, unless otherwise stated.

After more than a year, Australia’s borders have opened for a travel bubble with New Zealand.  And some travel insurers offer limited cover if your travel plans get interrupted by COVID-19.

But these international travel insurance policies only cover you for travel to New Zealand while a government travel ban still prevents you from travelling anywhere else without an exemption.

On this page:

Do you need travel insurance for New Zealand?

Will travel insurance provide cover for covid-19 in new zealand, will travel insurance cover skiing in new zealand, checklist for your new zealand holiday.

Travel insurance is essential for Australians travelling to New Zealand. Buy your insurance at the same time as you book your trip, that way you'll be covered if you have to cancel for some reason before you go.

Medical costs in New Zealand

New Zealand and Australia have a reciprocal healthcare agreement, meaning that Australian travellers can access New Zealand's public health service in an emergency, and vice versa.

You'll still have to pay some fees for treatment and medication and it's important to remember the agreement isn't a replacement for travel insurance.

Remember to take your Medicare card with you

For example, reciprocal health care does not cover you for free or subsidised care by a GP or ambulance, and if you get seriously ill, medical repatriation is very expensive and only covered by travel insurance.

Remember to take your Medicare card with you – you'll need it, along with your passport, to prove that you're eligible.

Accident cover in New Zealand

In New Zealand, accident victims cannot sue a third party for compensation. Instead, the Accident Compensation Commission (ACC) covers the cost of medical care within New Zealand.

This means it's essential that visitors to New Zealand are covered by travel insurance for repatriation, loss of income and disruptions to travel plans as you won't be compensated for those even if the other person was 100% at fault.

Note: Because of the ACC fund, CTP car insurance is not compulsory in New Zealand, as it is in Australia. However, it's still recommended and travel insurance can reduce the excess on the insurance your car hire company offers you.

Earthquake cover in New Zealand

New Zealand sometimes experiences severe seismic activity. The 2011 Christchurch earthquake claimed 185 lives and levelled much of the city centre.

Safety campaigns in New Zealand advise you to 'drop, cover and hold' – drop to the ground, take cover and hold on – in the event of an earthquake. See getready.govt.nz for more specific advice.

And read your travel insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) to see if you're covered for medical and cancellation for natural disasters

Some travel insurers, for example, Qantas (NIB), Virgin (Cover-More) or Medibank (Zurich), now offer travel insurance policies with limited cover against COVID-19. But they don't cover you if there's a general government travel ban, quarantine or border closure.

They normally provide cover for medical expenses should you contract COVID-19 and may cover travel delays or cancellations if you, your travelling partner, or a close relative contract COVID-19 before or during your travel.

You may also be covered if your accommodation, such as a ski resort, closes because of a COVID-19 outbreak or you have to go into quarantine because you were a close contact of someone who contracted COVID-19.

There are also other exclusions, especially for cruises and pre-existing conditions, so you need to read the insurer's PDS carefully to check what you're covered for.

Things can change quickly, flights can get cancelled and places can go into lockdown if an outbreak happens. You need to be prepared for your travel plans to be interrupted at short notice.

As travel insurance won't protect you from government border closures or general lockdowns, the key is to book with providers that allow flexibility should things change.

  • Check the rules for travelling to New Zealand .
  • Consider going to just one or a few places at a time rather than travelling around.
  • Read the terms and conditions before you book.
  • Book flexible tickets for flights. Read more about COVID-19 refunds from airlines .
  • Make sure your hotel booking can be cancelled or changed.
  • If you book through a travel agent or booking site, make sure they don't charge an extra cancellation fee. Read more about travel agent cancellations for COVID-19 .
  • Consider booking at the last minute so you're up to date with the latest travel restrictions.
  • Pay by credit card, as this allows you to pursue a chargeback if something goes wrong.
  • Keep on top of the latest travel advice for New Zealand .

Many insurers will cover you for standard skiing and snowboarding, but some offer it as an optional extra and some have special conditions.

Before getting insurance for a ski holiday, make sure it will cover you for your specific skiing or snowboarding destination, as well as for the activities you intend to do.

For example, off-piste (backcountry) skiing or snowboarding is often not covered, and when it is covered, it's usually only if you're still within the resort boundaries or skiing with a guide.

The same goes for riding on a snowmobile, which tends to be an optional cover – check directly with insurers as some may only cover riding a snowmobile if you're using it as a mode of transport rather than recreationally.

  • If you're planning on skiing, bungee jumping or doing anything else potentially bone-breaking, make sure your insurance covers it. You'll often need to purchase extra cover.
  • Check if your passport is still valid, and if not, renew your passport online .
  • Take your Medicare card with you.
  • Keep a printout of your travel insurance details with you at all times while on your trip. It's also a good idea to share your insurance details with family or friends before you leave.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

How much does travel insurance for New Zealand cost?

It's a fact that the cost of travel insurance can vary enormously. A 30-year-old travelling to New Zealand for a two-week holiday can expect to pay anywhere between $25 - $150 depending on the level of cover purchased. Generally speaking, Basic (also known as medical-only policies) range from $25 – $50, Mid-level policies approx $40 – $100 and Comprehensive from $50 - $150.

Reciprocal healthcare  benefits

Lucky for us Aussies, New Zealand and Australia share reciprocal healthcare agreements. That means you have access to government medical facilities and care. Travellers to New Zealand who are injured in an accident are also covered for hospital treatment by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides compulsory insurance cover for personal injury for everyone in New Zealand, whether a citizen, resident or visitor. This means if you are injured by an accident in New Zealand, ACC may pay some of your medical and rehabilitation costs. No-fault cover means it doesn't matter what you were doing when you were injured or who was at fault. The ACCC cover you, as long as the injury falls within their legislation.  Take note that these agreements do not provide ongoing treatment of existing health conditions and charges may still apply for visits to GPs and specialists, prescription medications and diagnostic tests.

WHAT DOES new zealand  TRAVEL INSURANCE COVER?

medical-assistance

24/7 Medical assistance

As an adventure sports hub, New Zealand sees its fair share of nasty injuries. Whilst you may be eligible for reciprocal health care in New Zealand, this would not cover any additional accommodation costs, flights for family members or medical repatriation to Australia. Travel insurance can help to cover these costs should the worst-case scenario occur.

cancellation cover

Cancellation cover

Travel insurance will cover unforeseen cancellations for events such as natural disasters, as well as accidents, hijackings, severe sickness or injury. Travel insurance will cover the costs of medical attention as well as the reasonable additional expenses caused by the rescheduling of travel plans.

cancellation

Lost or damaged Luggage

Has a lone sheep just chewed up your camera? Your travel insurance policy will reimburse you for lost, stolen or damaged luggage. Comprehensive cover also includes cover for theft of cash and travel documents too.

No hidden fees

Travel delays

If your flight is delayed or you have to cancel your trip you may get reimbursed by your travel insurance provider. Generally, your flight has to be delayed by over 24 hours for you to receive travel delay reimbursement. Although it is the airline's responsibility to get you on the next flight if the delay is through a fault of their own.

family emergency

Family emergency

It's always a worry going on holiday leaving loved ones behind. Never fear, should a close relative, or the person you’re travelling with become seriously ill, injured or heaven-forbid die, your travel expenses would be claimable. Restrictions can apply for relatives age, medical conditions and where they live.

personal liability

Personal liability

If you injure someone or are held accountable for damaged property in New Zealand (like crashing your hire car into a parked car for example) the consequences would be less than stellar. In such an event, your policy will cover your liability costs to a degree.

New Zealand experiences  natural disasters  and  severe weather , including:

  • earthquakes
  • volcanic activity
  • flash flooding

To protect yourself in a natural disaster:

  • secure your passport in a safe, waterproof place
  • follow the advice of local authorities
  • keep in contact with friends and family

Monitor local media and other sources, including:

  • Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management
  • Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System
  • GetReady website  (New Zealand government)

Earthquakes

Earthquakes  are a constant risk in New Zealand.

Most quakes are too small or deep in the earth to feel. However, about 150 to 200 quakes are big enough to feel each year.

Large, damaging earthquakes have occurred and could happen again at any time. Aftershocks can continue for days or weeks.

When an earthquake happens, you're advised to drop, cover and hold. If an earthquake is long or strong, and you're near the coast or large body of water, you should go to higher ground immediately.

If you're indoors during an earthquake:

  • move no more than a few steps to a heavy, solid object you can get underneath, and hold onto it
  • don't try to run outside
  • stay indoors until the shaking stops
  • stay away from windows, chimneys, and shelves with heavy objects

If you're in bed:

  • hold onto the bed and stay where you are
  • protect your head and body with a pillow and blankets

If you're outdoors:

  • move to the nearest clear spot
  • keep away from buildings, trees, and power lines
  • drop to the ground

If you're in a car:

  • drive to a clear place away from buildings, trees, and power lines
  • stay in the car with your seatbelt on until the shaking stops

If you're in a lift:

  • stop at the nearest floor and get out

After the earthquake finishes:

  • be aware of possible tsunami risks (see below)
  • prepare for travel delays
  • reconfirm your travel arrangements
  • check your accommodation with travel agents and tour operators

Because of the region's earthquake risk, tsunamis could happen.

All of New Zealand's coastline is at risk of a tsunami.  New Zealand is a member of the Pacific Tsunami Warning System.

The National Emergency Management Agency manages the National Tsunami Advisory and Warning Plan and issues tsunami alerts on its website. These are also broadcast by New Zealand media.

A tsunami could arrive within minutes. There may not be time for an official warning.

Move immediately to high ground, or as far inland as possible, if you're near the coast and you:

  • feel a strong earthquake that makes it hard to stand up
  • feel a weak, rolling earthquake that lasts a minute or more
  • see a sudden rise or fall in sea level
  • hear loud and unusual noises from the sea

Don't wait for official warnings.

Walk or bike if possible because of potential road congestion.

New Zealand's active volcanoes can erupt at any time. Volcanic alert levels may rise quickly. You may be ordered to evacuate at short notice.

If there's volcanic activity:

  • follow the instructions and advice of local authorities
  • follow evacuation orders
  • take official warnings seriously

If you plan to visit active volcanoes or surrounding areas:

  • monitor the  GeoNet  website
  • get local advice first

Visit  GeoNet  for information about volcanic activity at:

  • Mt Tongariro
  • White Island
  • other active volcanic sites

Severe weather

Weather conditions can change quickly. Severe weather can occur.

Creeks and rivers can experience  flash flooding  after heavy rains.

Rapid weather changes could leave you stranded or injured, particularly if you're in a remote area.

Monitor weather conditions, forecasts and warnings from  Metservice .

Take extra care if you're climbing, hiking or in a remote area. See  Travel

A state of local emergency has been declared for Christchurch City, including Banks Peninsula and Selwyn District. For further information, visit the Civil Defence Emergency Management website.

Parts of New Zealand experience  bushfires  in hot, dry conditions.

If there's a bushfire, follow local advice.

Adventure activities

Most people enjoy adventure activities safely in New Zealand. However, these activities carry risks.

Several serious accidents involving Australians and other travellers have occurred. People have died.

Some operators have been found to be negligent.

Safety standards can differ both between individual operators, and from standards in Australia.

If you plan to do an adventure activity:

  • be aware of the risks of individual or group activities
  • check the safety standards of operators
  • check to see if operators meet industry standards

Safety risks can increase in severe weather and remote areas.

Before you do any adventure activities :

  • make sure your  travel insurance  covers your planned activities
  • understand what your travel and other insurance doesn't cover
  • only book with operators with appropriate safety equipment and practices
  • always use the safety equipment, even if others don't

If you're trekking or travelling in a remote area:

  • get updates on local weather from the  Department of Conservation (DOC)
  • check conditions with the local DOC visitor centre
  • register your trip with a DOC visitor centre
  • tell your family and friends your plans
  • carry a personal locator beacon
  • avoid creeks and rivers after heavy rains

You can hire personal locator beacons throughout New Zealand.

When you return from a hike, check in with:

  • the DOC visitor centre
  • your family and friends
  • anyone else who knew your plans
  • AdventureSmart
  • Mountain Safety Council

Travel insurance

Get comprehensive  travel insurance  before you leave.

Your policy must cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. The Australian Government won't pay for these costs.

If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. This applies to everyone, no matter how healthy and fit you are.

If you're not insured, you may have to pay many thousands of dollars up-front for medical care.

  • what activities and care your policy covers
  • that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away (including if stopovers on the way to your destination are covered)

Physical and mental health

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition.

See your doctor or travel clinic to:

  • have a basic health check-up
  • ask if your travel plans may affect your health
  • plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

If you need counselling services in New Zealand, contact:

  • Lifeline – 0800 543 354 or free text HELP (4357)
  • Suicide Crisis Helpline – 0508 828 865 (0508 TAUTOKO)

Not all medication available over the counter or by prescription in Australia is available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

If you plan to take medication, check if it's legal in New Zealand. Take enough legal medication for your trip.

Carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating:

  • what the medication is
  • your required dosage
  • that it's for personal use
  • New Zealand Customs Service
  • Medicare Australia

Health risks

Health risks are broadly similar to those in Australia.

Medical care

Medical facilities, reciprocal health care.

New Zealand and Australia have a  reciprocal health care agreement . This lets Australians access public medical facilities and care.

It doesn't:

  • include ongoing treatment of existing health conditions
  • cover extra accommodation costs or flights for family members
  • cover flights to Australia
  • replace the need for travel insurance.

To access services under the agreement:

  • show your current Australian passport or evidence of permanent residency
  • show your valid Medicare card.
  • New Zealand Ministry of Health
  • Reciprocal health care agreement (Services Australia)

Accident Compensation Corporation

If you're injured in an accident, the  Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)  covers the costs of hospital treatment.

The cover provided by ACC:

  • offers injury cover on a 'no-fault' basis — this means accident victims don’t have a legal right to sue a third party
  • ends once you've left New Zealand
  • doesn't replace your need for  travel insurance .

You're subject to all local laws and penalties, including those that may appear harsh by Australian standards. Research local laws before travelling.

If you're arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you under our  Consular Services Charter . But we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.

Penalties for possessing and using drugs may include fines and prison sentences.

  • Carrying or using drugs

Alcohol laws

You'll need photo ID to buy alcohol or enter licensed premises.

You can't use your Australian driver's licence.

Approved IDs include:

  • current passport
  • current New Zealand driver's licence
  • Kiwi Access Card
  • Approved ID

Quarantine regulations

New Zealand has strict biosecurity rules.

If you don't declare items for quarantine, you'll get an instant fine.

If you make a false statement, you'll face heavy fines and prison sentences.

Customs requirements

When you arrive, customs officers may check electronic devices they suspect are being used in criminal activity. Devices may include:

  • mobile phones
  • portable tablets
  • hard drives
  • digital cameras

Australian laws

Some Australian criminal laws still apply when you're overseas. If you break these laws, you may face prosecution in Australia.

  • Staying within the law and respecting customs

Dual citizenship

New Zealand recognises dual nationality.

If you're an Australian-New Zealand dual citizen, use your  Australian passport  to enter and leave Australia.

  • Dual nationals

Visas and border measures

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. Make sure you meet all entry and exit conditions. Contact  NZ Immigration  for details about visas, currency, customs and quarantine rules. If you don't meet the conditions, the Australian Government can't help you.

Visa conditions

Most Australian citizens don’t need a visa to enter unless you have a criminal record or if you've been deported from any country.

Australian permanent residents need to apply online for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) to enter New Zealand. Australian citizens are exempt from this rule.

For more information refer to the NZ Government Immigration website .

If you've been:

  • convicted of any crimes, or
  • deported from any country

contact a  New Zealand Visa Application Centre  for advice well before you travel.

Maritime border

New Zealand's maritime border reopened to all vessels, including foreign flagged vessels, cruise ships, recreational vessels (such as yachts and small craft) and specialist vessels used in research and exploration.

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. This can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. Travellers can receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid for long enough, consider getting  a new passport .

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is a valuable document. It's attractive to people who may try to use your identity to commit crimes.

Some people may try to trick you into giving them your passport. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government as soon as possible:

  • In Australia, contact the  Australian Passport Information Service .
  • If you're overseas, contact the nearest  Australian embassy or consulate .

Passport with ‘X’ gender identifier

Although Australian passports comply with international standards for sex and gender, we can't guarantee that a passport showing 'X' in the sex field will be accepted for entry or transit by another country. Contact the nearest  embassy, high commission or consulate of your destination  before you arrive at the border to confirm if authorities will accept passports with 'X' gender markers.

Road travel

Ice, snow, fog, high winds and roaming animals can cause hazardous conditions. Heavy rain can cause landslides across roads.

Outside major cities, there aren't many motorways. Overtaking opportunities are limited.

Prepare for longer travel times than in Australia.

Railway crossings don't always have barriers, particularly in country areas.

If you're driving in mountain areas or to ski fields, be aware that roads:

  • are often narrow and unpaved
  • may not have safety barriers
  • may require you to use snow chains
  • may only be accessible by 4WD

It’s illegal to use a mobile phone while driving, but there is an exemption for 111 calls in genuine emergencies. Hands-free devices and 2-way radio are permitted.

If you plan to drive in New Zealand:

  • learn the  local road rules  before driving
  • be careful if there's ice, snow, fog or high winds
  • check for road closures and warnings with the  New Zealand Transport Agency
  • equip yourself for current and possible weather conditions

Make sure your travel insurance covers using a motorbike, quad bike or similar vehicle.

Always wear a helmet.

Taxis and rideshares are generally reliable. The standards are similar to Australia.

The  New Zealand Transport Authority  regulates taxis and rideshare apps.

Public transport

Buses, trains and ferries operate throughout New Zealand. State-run services are also regulated by the New Zealand Transport Authority.

Take care of your belongings on public transport.

A cruise ship sounds about the safest holiday environment you could choose – but even in these self-contained cities on the sea, something can go wrong. When RACV member John* had a stroke while on a cruise in New Zealand and needed to be medevaced home to Australia, he faced a huge bill. By the time medical transportation, additional emergency expenses and cancellation of the unused part of his trip were taken into account, the out-of-pocket costs came to $81,000.

Such a bill could have been life-changing - in a bad way. Fortunately, John had taken out RACV Travel Insurance, which covered the total amount.

John’s experience illustrates that whether you are travelling to New Zealand on a cruise with the family, an adventure break on the South Island or a self-drive holiday, there are some important questions to consider before you go to the Land of the Long White Cloud.

*John’s name has been changed

Do Australians need travel insurance for New Zealand?

helicopter landing on top of an mountain covered in snow in new zealand

Cover for hospital treatment and medical expenses in foreign countries is one of the main reasons people take out travel insurance. Knowing this, many Australian travellers ask whether they really need to take out travel insurance for a trip to New Zealand because the two countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement.

But what does a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement actually mean and what does your Australian Medicare card cover you for in New Zealand?

Reciprocal medical cover provides urgent medical treatment for Australian citizens or residents with a Medicare card while they are in New Zealand. But the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement does not cover:

  • Treatment received on a cruise ship
  • Evacuation costs
  • Repatriation costs
  • Medical transport costs

You can see there are a number of situations where travel insurance might be needed even in New Zealand. And there’s more…

Does RACV travel insurance cover car and campervan hire in New Zealand

Self-drive holidays are one of the most popular ways to explore New Zealand. But if you’re planning to hire a rental car, campervan or motorhome, there are several things you need to be aware of, particularly rental car excess insurance, which is included in some RACV travel insurance policies.

  • Know how much your excess is. The excess is the amount payable if your rental vehicle is damaged or stolen. Check whether there is an additional excess if your car is involved in a single vehicle accident.
  • RACV Rental Car Excess will cover you for the rental vehicle insurance excess or the cost of repairs - whichever is the lower amount. However, it does not replace rental vehicle insurance.
  • Read your rental terms and conditions. These may include limits on when and where you can drive the rental vehicle. RACV Rental Car Excess will not cover you if you violate your rental agreement.
  • Is there an age restriction? Many rental companies impose maximum or minimum age limits and rules. Check the details before you arrive to avoid any nasty surprises.

Does RACV travel insurance cover skiing and winter sports?

new zealand snow skiing and winter sports insurance

Before you hit New Zealand’s renowned mountain slopes, remember to check your travel insurance to make sure you are covered.

RACV Travel Insurance does cover you for skiing and other winter sports (including tobogganing, snowmobiling and ice skating), provided you add this to your policy and pay any additional premium. However competitive skiing and winter sports aren’t covered.

RACV Travel Insurance covers you for a range of winter sports, learn which activities and sports are included on the  adventure travel insurance  page.

What adventure sports and activities does RACV travel insurance cover?

New Zealand is world renowned as a mecca for adventure sports, so before you take the plunge with a bungee jump, or white-water rafting adventure, make sure you’re covered by your travel insurance.

RACV Travel Insurance will cover a wide range of adventure pursuits as long as the activity:

  • Is conducted through a commercial operator and is available to the public
  • Is not considered extreme risk
  • Does not require any special skills, pre-fitness training program or a high level of fitness.

However, some activities, including heli-skiing, base jumping, sky diving and hang gliding are not covered in any circumstances. Before undertaking any activity, be sure to check with your travel insurance provider whether or not you are covered.

RACV Travel Insurance covers adventure sports and activities, learn which are included on the  adventure travel insurance  page.

Australia’s wide-open spaces make it perfect for a road trip. One of the best ways to experience the country is by renting a car and seeing where the road takes you: whether that’s tackling the Great Ocean Road over a few days, meeting charming beach towns as you drive along the legendary Pacific Way, or an intrepid adventure completing the ‘big lap’ right around Australia’s coastline.

But before you go it’s important to ensure you have the right coverage when renting a vehicle.

Our International Options Plan includes a rental vehicle insurance excess up to a benefit limit of $10,000. This means that if you hire a car and happen to have an accident, cover is included for the rental vehicle’s insurance excess only.

You must have comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the rental vehicle for the period of hire, and you must be the nominated driver on the rental car agreement.

No cover is provided on our Essentials Plan.

“Rental vehicle” means a campervan/motorhome that does not exceed 6 tonnes, SUV, sedan, station wagon, hatchback, people mover, coupe, convertible, four-wheel drive, mini bus, moped or motorcycle rented from a licensed motor vehicle or motorcycle rental company or agency.

Please note: refer to the Policy Wording for more information on motorcycle and moped cover as eligibility conditions apply.

Am I covered when riding a motorcycle/moped?

Do you intend to ride a motorbike or moped as part of your trip to Australia? Our policies can automatically cover riding a motorcycle or moped – whether you plan or driving or being a passenger on one. You do not need to buy additional coverage for this protection to apply.

You can only be covered for riding a motorcycle or moped if:

  • Whilst in control of a motorcycle/moped you hold a valid New Zealand motorcycle licence or New Zealand motor vehicle driver licence;
  • You hold a licence valid in the relevant country;
  • Whilst you are a pillion passenger, the driver holds a licence valid in the relevant country;
  • The engine capacity is 250cc or less;
  • You are wearing a helmet;
  • You are not participating in a professional capacity; and
  • You are not racing.

No cover applies for personal liability. You are responsible for any costs associated with damage to the motorcycle, moped or property, or injury to another person. Make sure you read the Policy Wording before purchasing, so you are aware of the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions of coverage.

You can read more on our motorcycle travel insurance page.

Travel insurance for Australia

Over one million Kiwis visit Australia every year. With white-sand beaches, dazzling harbours, lively cities and boundless room for adventure, it’s easy to see why. Our western neighbour has become a second home, and it’s rare to find a Kiwi who hasn’t bathed at Bondi Beach or shopped till they dropped in the malls of Melbourne.

While Australia has a reputation as an affordable holiday favourite, it also has a reputation as a place of danger. Whether it be sharks, jellyfish, rip currents, or just the scorching sun, an Australian beach escape can easily turn into a holiday to forget.

But it’s not just the beaches that present risks to travellers, which is why proper insurance is essential for your Australian holiday, no matter what part of the country you’re visiting.

Do New Zealanders need travel insurance for Australia?

New Zealanders enjoy a  reciprocal health agreement with Australia  for some healthcare services, like medically necessary treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and access to prescription medicine.

There is a common misconception that this reciprocal health agreement means that New Zealanders don’t need travel insurance when visiting Australia. This is not the case. Emergency hospital treatment can quickly become extremely expensive, especially when it causes disruptions to your travel plans.

For example, a broken leg can mean an unwanted upgrade to business class seats, or prevent you from departing at all. Uninsured travellers can also find themselves footing the bill for ambulance rides, blood tests, accommodation extensions and flight cancellations.

We’ve seen first-hand how costly it can be to extend your stay due to a medical emergency, which is why we urge all New Zealanders to protect themselves with travel insurance when visiting Australia.

What will my insurance policy cover in Australia?

Our International Comprehensive policy provides comprehensive travel insurance for your trip to Australia. All International Comprehensive customers have access to our worldwide Emergency Assistance team, who can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our comprehensive International Comprehensive insurance includes cover for:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while on your journey
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits – increase your cover depending on the cost of your journey
  • Damaged or lost baggage
  • Personal items if they are stolen or damaged
  • Rental car excess should you have an accident
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Funeral costs

Does my policy cover medical emergencies and hospital bills?

Unfortunately, illness and injury make up the largest number of claims we receive from travellers to Australia.

Thankfully, our International Comprehensive policy insures you for unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while you’re in Australia.

Am I covered for stolen or damaged phones, cameras and laptops?

Behind illness and injury, stolen and damaged valuables are the second most common claim we see from travellers to Australia. You may expect pickpocketing to be a greater risk in the marketplaces of South-East Asia than in the modern cities of Sydney or Melbourne, however travellers should keep their guard up as Australia isn’t immune to petty thieves.

Stolen valuables can take the shine off any holiday, which is why our International Comprehensive policy covers you for personal items that are lost, stolen or damaged as a result from an unexpected event.

Am I insured for rental vehicle excess?

Australia has enough endless highways and scenic coast routes to satisfy any traveller with a taste for the open road. In fact, travelling by car from Sydney to Perth takes over 40 hours of driving time!

Your Aussie road trip may not be this extreme, but it’s important that you prepare carefully even for short journeys on the road. Our International Comprehensive policy covers you for rental vehicle excess of up to $10,000 per paying person if you have an accident, but your cover depends on a few things including:

  • That you or the driver obey any law including driving laws or highway rules. For example: speed limits and blood alcohol limits
  • That you hire your vehicle from a licensed rental vehicle agency
  • That you always comply with the terms of the rental vehicle agreement
  • That you only drive on formed or paved roads and car parks
  • You are a named driver on the policy
