A Professional Race Car Driver's Guide to Nurburgring Tourist Days

Ever wonder what Nurburging tourist days are all about? JR Hildebrand is here to break them down so you can have fun.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Luxury vehicle, Automotive design, Personal luxury car, Full-size car, Cadillac cts-v, Mid-size car, Performance car,

Let me just start with this, first–go do a tourist day at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. I really mean that. If you enjoy driving in almost any capacity it’s a must, and you won’t regret it. Here’s a little story, some helpful hints, and why it was extra bitchin' in some four-door American iron.

I got to the circuit a couple hours before the Nordschleife was due to open on a damp Saturday morning, unsure of exactly what the procedure would be for getting on track. It was, after all, a “tourist day” which would supposedly be easy and loose, but I still assumed it would have all the average track day hassle with waivers, lines, safety briefings, registration and all the rest of it. I’d heard that these weekends get busy to the point of borderline insanity, but even an hour before the track was due to open there was hardly anyone around.

“What’s the deal, here?” I thought. Not sure what else to do, I sat in the 2018 CTS-V that Cadillac kindly loaned me for our two-week trip, Wi-Fi on, reviewing onboard videos and glancing around every so often but picking up little activity. The track’s Twitter feed said 11A sharp for start time which was rapidly approaching. The corner marshals were starting to gather, the Devil’s Diner–an Americana-themed restaurant and gathering place right off the track–had begun to fire up, but little else. Did I miss something?

Then, suddenly, the place came alive. Cars of all shapes and sizes started filing into the various parking lots all around the Nordschleife circuit entrance; M3s of every generation, GT3s, Ferraris, Skylines, GTIs, and everything in between. The registration staff showed up to the ticketing building and, like a dog whistle had blown that I just couldn’t hear, people came from every direction to get in line. I hopped out and queued up, working out what to do along the way.

Here are some notes, tips, and context for doing this on your own.

Getting Your Green Hell Toll Pass Rocks

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Automotive design, Touring car racing, Mid-size car, Full-size car, Performance car, Motorsport, Race track,

Maybe the most beautiful thing about Nordschleife tourist days is the simplicity. You get in line to register, saddle up at a computer, read through the terms and conditions that clearly outline your responsibilities, fill out some info, and wait for a member of the registration staff to become available. Once there they pull you up via your email and ask how much you’d like to put on your Green Hell Toll Pass.

One lap costs you 30 Euros on a weekend. Was I there just to do one lap? No. Does it get a little pricey if you go out there and just start ripping them off? Sort of. But consider what’s really going on here–you are getting to do a track day at one of the most epic racetracks in the world, and you can pay as you go without any further commitment. That’s totally awesome all by itself. You load up your toll pass with as many 30E credits as you want (there are some bulk packages that you save some on), and literally, that’s it. Getting registered to drive at most indoor karting places is more of a pain in the ass, and now you’re sorted to go rip at the Nordschleife in ten minutes or less.

Manifest Your Inner German-ness

The track is effectively treated as a toll road that’s self-regulated by autobahn driving rules. If you are licensed to drive on the autobahn, you are licensed to drive on the Nordschleife, and expected to know and the vigilantly follow the rules. At first this seems highly under-thought, but once you get on track you realize it’s perfectly -thought. I’d submit that there’s no other place in the world where you could get away with such a simple set of rules and avoid absolute chaos. But you’re in Germany, and it works in Germany.

If a car behind you is closing, you indicate right and move over. If you’re the approaching car, you must pass on the left. If the racing line is such that you’d naturally pass on the left and there’s plenty of room, nobody stresses much about waiting for the blinker. If only us Americans could get the left-lane rules through our thick skulls we might be able to have nice things like super-accessible pay-as-you-go track days. That's not the case.

Have the Gear and Vehicle YOU Want/Need

Vehicle, Car, Steering wheel, Steering part, Luxury vehicle, Driving, Windshield, Vehicle door, Automotive design, Automotive window part,

No safety gear is required–remember it’s a “toll road” not a “race track”–but most people have helmets nonetheless (I brought one each for my wife and I because it seemed absurd not to). I recommend a comfortable pair of driving shoes, which for me was my trusty checkered slip-on Vans (for real–great pedal feel and awesome for heel-toe in a street car with pedals that are far apart if necessary). There are a bunch of cars there with roll-cages, but in kind of a weird flipping of the track-day script, your car actually must be a street-legal vehicle with plates to run on one of these days.

I could make a good argument for almost any car being fun to drive around the place, but there is a hierarchy that you should be aware of. At the bottom of the food chain you have visitors that are cruising around in their rental cars just to say they’ve done a lap. Don’t be one of these people –the circuit is not for beginners, someone will invariably blow past you at 250+kph somewhere and you’ll end up doing the rest of the lap scared shitless looking in your rearview, plus the many ‘ring photogs will send shots of you in your car to your rental company and reap a decent reward for catching you regardless of how hard you’re driving the thing. There are also numerous rental places on-site that will be happy to loan you a car for lapping; spend some time researching your needs. At the top you have various combinations of fast cars–some dude managed to plate what appeared to be a 458 Challenge car–and fast drivers, where the local studs ripping in the GT3 RS and Merc GT ring taxis are at the tip of the spear. To be 100 percent clear, those guys and gals are not f*cking around, at all. Don’t be in their way for long. I got the feeling they really enjoy humbling everyone else out there, which, I mean, yeah. Wouldn’t you?

Don’t e a W ichser , Learn the Track Ahead of Time

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Automotive design, Race track, Performance car, City car, Mid-size car, Automotive exterior, Bumper,

Finally, take it from a professional who probably (definitely) has more experience getting up to speed quickly at a new track: don’t show up not knowing the way around. There are too many good resources for learning the layout of the Nordschleife to not spend the time utilizing them, and it’s simply not a place you’ll become familiar with by just driving it over a couple days if you come in cold. You don’t get that many laps, there are a ton of corners with few traditional references, and there are a lot of other cars out there to concern yourself with. If you want to really enjoy the experience, thoroughly learn the track before you get there so you can take full advantage of the laps you put in.

The track was still damp in a bunch of places when I first went out that Saturday, so I treated my first couple laps as reconnaissance both to get my bearings and feel out the V. What I immediately grasped in a whole new way than playing it in a game was that yes, this place is really fast–you don’t need to be in a McLaren to find yourself in excess of 250 kph (155 mph) around the place, and the kinks, bends and bumps on the “flatout” sections of track can require your full attention and then some–and man, no wonder they wad cars up around here on the regular, there’s nowhere friendly to send it off the track. Partway around my second lap I was thinking, “Maybe a drying Nordschleife isn’t the best place to test the maximum grip of these Pilot Super Spor- *BRRRAAHHHH-!KHPP!-BRAAAAHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh...* andddd there goes the GT3 RS ring taxi blowing by at full wick down the esses blasting some spray on my windshield.”

You enter and exit the course on the backstraight, and since you’ve got to stop to go through the toll gate before starting a new lap whether you stay on course or not, most people peel off. I found it worthwhile to give the big Caddy a little rest between laps to let the tires and brakes cool which seemed to be a pretty normal procedure. Next time around I’d bring an air-pressure gauge, thankfully I was able to borrow one when I thought I needed to bleed the pressures down a tad. It’s probably a good practice to take a breather, grab a water, and cruise around the epic parking lot scene just to let the adrenaline recede a little as well.

By the end of the day there had been plenty of sunlight and I felt pretty comfortable with the car and the track. Just getting familiar with how the whole situation there worked while solo basically took the whole day. First lap out Sunday morning it felt like a racetrack for the first time and I was beginning to realize that the big Cad could be quite a predator out there, so I went to hunt down some Porsches and M3s.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Race track, Automotive design, Mid-size car, Asphalt, Mode of transport, Performance car, Touring car racing,

I figured the V for a weapon, but a car its size with stock ride height and exhaust is only going to get so much respect sitting still among an array of tuned, caged sportscars in Europe. Fortunately for me, closing rate is a universally understood language and the V spoke it fluently. Power from the 650hp supercharged LT4 came smoothly and relentlessly through the gears, the car feeling like it would never stop accelerating. I glanced at the heads-up display on a clean lap heading toward the big yump on the downhill straight after Flugplatz and the speedo was rolling over effortlessly at 270k before I pedaled it. Holy sh*t, this thing is movin’!

I ran the car’s chassis and suspension setup in full track-mode with the traction and stability controls completely turned off–I wanted the car to rotate a little extra over the curbs–but it remained ultra-stable where I needed it while maintaining a far more neutral cornering balance than I ever would have expected. I could stay totally committed over all the high-speed bumps and hammer the banked sections with a level of confidence reserved only for cars with serious tuning and chops. It’s worth noting that I personally own a CTS-V wagon of the previous generation, and while this car looks similar on the stat sheet it became abundantly clear that it’s an entirely more refined and better equipped car than mine. We could debate long and hard about whether tuning street cars at the Nürburgring makes them more or less fun as everyday street cars, but I tell you what, it DEFINITELY makes them more fun at the Nürburgring.

After getting well acquainted, the spacious cabin began to seem awfully empty so the obvious thing to do was add three more people and then go chase people down on track, right? My wife jumped in the front, my pals Rob and Darren piled in the back, and we set out on the prowl. For the first half the lap I was a little leery of how the tires and brakes would hold up with three extra people in the car, but then I realized we weren’t really losing the GT3 RS in front of us so 8/10ths turned into about 9.8/10ths. Screw it. Go time. The Nordschleife is so badass.

nurburgring tourist days 2024

The 22.81 km and 173 corners that made up the Nordschleife, where the drivers made all the difference, has given way to a “modern” track comprising short but important stretches, broken up by chicanes or slow corners. To win on this track, which is still fast and very enjoyable to drive, you need a very well balanced car with a chassis able to support the driver’s style. The track’s asphalt may be very smooth, but it follows a very bumpy route, which makes driving a lot of fun and very challenging. The brakes don’t have to work hard along the ups and downs of the Ring, but the tyres need to withstand heavy loads. Indeed, the track is famous for its understeer. Its challenging points include the new “Mercedes Arena” which replaced the Castrol Esse and offers many opportunities for passing on entry.

The Dunlop hairpin also requires great care on entry and, above all, on exit. Although there are few places to pass - the last one being the Veedol chicane, the German track often hosts hard-fought and very entertaining races.

Welcome to the most challenging track in the world

Nurburgring is, by far, the most prestigious racetrack in the world. Stretching almost 21 kilometers it is a true challenge for all drivers. Learning the track is nothing one can do in an afternoon - it is often a lifetime project for many members of the sports car community to master the ring.

Limited to 128 supercars

While the event is limited to 128 participating cars you can be sure to get the ultimate Nurburgring experience. No tourists. No motorcycles. No buses. Actually no other traffic at all. Just you and the most demanding track in the world. You and the next corner. The way it should be.

nurburgring tourist days 2024

Furthermore, you don't need to enter the pit each lap. You can keep going flat out on Döttingher Höhe all the way past the Touristenfahrt entry, reaching warp speed seven towards Tiergarten.

We drive according to open pit lane regulations, which means you can enter the track whenever you want - no waiting for your turn to go. With so few cars on track it is also a safe event - very little congestion and dangerous overtaking.

Previous experience on the Nurburgring required

We have done this event for twelve(!) years now. Many of you have been with us since the beginning. You are becoming very fast around this track, and you want to enjoy free laps without slow traffic in the way. Gran Turismo is for supercar owners who have previous experience - only. No beginners .

Two days of driving

Check-in to the event is in the lobby of the hotel starting from noon on the first day. We have a welcome mingle that starts at 18:30 in the hotel before we have the briefing in the conference area at about 19:00.

If you are interested, we are also organising a track walk, where Nurburgring officials show you around on a tour bus. Pick up is at 19:15 from just outside of the hotel.

nurburgring tourist days 2024

Dinner starts at 20:00 in the hotel restaurant. The briefing is compulsory, even if you are not staying with us in the hotel.

The following two days, we have the Nordschleife exclusively for us. As always, we will have first-class instruction and full hospitality on the track. Oh, and let’s not forget the traditional dinner in the famous Pistenklause restaurant on the second evening.

Accommodation

We are staying at Lindner Congress, a four-star hotel located right next to the Grand Prix-circuit, with the wonderful landscape of the High Eifel region in the background. You can join the event without staying with us in the hotel, at a reduced cost. Everything else is always included. Just let us know when you register.

The Gran Turismo experience

Since we started two decades ago, we have been doing things a little bit differently. Our events are not just about driving, it is just as much about meeting the people who love driving, too. Welcome to our community of supercar owners!

2024 Nurburgring Prices and how to get Free Laps

Alex Gassman

by Alex Gassman

  • Updated: December 12, 2023

Nurburgring ticket barrier

With the cost of everything going up, are Nurburgring prices going up too? How much is a Nurburgring ticket going to cost you? Is it cheaper to buy a season ticket? How can you get free bonus laps? Are Nurburgring track days better value?

We look at all this and more in this article.

Nurburgring prices for Touristenfahrten in 2024

If you want to purchase individual lap tickets, the Nordschleife ticket price for 2024 is as follows:

  • Monday – Thursday: 30 Euros per lap
  • Friday – Sunday: 35 Euros per lap
  • Public holidays: 35 Euros per lap.

Keep your eye on the Nurburgring twitter page. Once in a blue moon they offer discounted lap tickets for a particular tourist driving session, like they did on the 31st March 2022:

Tourist Drives for 20 quid 😎 1 hour longer, 5 euros cheaper 👏 ➡ Thursday, 31 March | 04:00 - 06:30 PM ➡ Tourist drives Nordschleife Photo: @RingRaceShoot pic.twitter.com/1Uqdo6QEJt — Nürburgring (@nuerburgring) March 24, 2022

Nurburgring Grand Prix track tourist driving prices

On select days throughout the year, the Nurburgring Grand Prix Strecke (GP track) will also be available for tourist drives.  The entrance locations for the Nordschleife and GP track tourist sessions are in different locations – so make sure you know where you’re going.

The GP track tourist drives are held in 15 minute sessions, and the cost of one 15 minute session is the same regardless of which day of the week it is.

  • Monday – Sunday (including public holidays): 35 Euros per 15 minute session

How to buy nurburgring lap tickets

Since 2017, you have been able to pre-pay for your Nurburgring tickets by signing up to an account on the Nurburgring website   and loading your account with Euros. Your account dashboard allows you to view your transaction and lapping history, as well as providing some real-time information on the track such as the weather, webcams and its open / closed status.

Nurburgring tourist driving dashboard showing circuit and weather information

You can  download a QR code from your account, which you would then need to send to your phone (easiest may be to take a picture of it with your camera on your phone). The barriers to enter the Ring have QR code readers which you can then show this code to.

QR Code for the Nurburgring Nordschleife lap tickets

There used to be Nurburgring app which allowed you to view all of this data and top up your account easily from your phone, but this has been removed from the Android and Apple app stores.

Physical tickets

You can still purchase physical Nurburgring tickets as well, in the form of a Nurburgring Green Hell card. Your online Nurburgring account allows you to assign a card to your profile, so your current account balance can be mirrored on your card and this can be used to get you through the barriers. You can view your current cards or deactivate them if you need to.

You don’t have to use the online loading system at all if you don’t want to. You can just go and buy a physical ticket and ask the attendant to load X number of Euros on to it for you.

You can purchase your physical tickets from the following locations:

  • The ticket office in the car park opposite the Nurburgring entrance  (often a big queue on busy days)
  • The ED Tankstelle petrol station just a couple of minutes drive away from the Nordschleife entrance
  • The Ring Info centre on the Nurburgring boulevard, near to the rollercoaster

Nurburgring green hell card for lap tickets

Want to know how busy it currently is at the Ring? Check out the live Nurburgring webcams to get an idea of how long you might need to queue to buy a ticket, or get through the entry barriers.

Also check the opening hours before heading to the circuit to make sure it’s actually open.

If you are hiring a Nurburgring rental car , check with the company whether lap tickets are included or not – normally they offer packages both with and without laps. If you want to film your laps in the rental car, most companies will have some kind of camera mount setup in the car already. If not, make sure you’re aware of the filming and camera rules.

Before you head out on track you will want to check out the official Nurburgring rules for Tourist Driving. Familiarise yourself with these – they’ll help keep you and everyone else safe.

Green Hell Credits - free Nurburgring bonus laps

There is also a bonus system which awards you free Green Hell Credits (GHCs) depending on how much you load on to your account in bulk. GHCs can be redeemed against the cost of laps, where 1 GHC = 1 Euro. These are the bonus tiers:

  • 0-99 Euros – 0% bonus
  • 100-199 Euros – 10% bonus GHCs
  • 200-499 Euros – 15% bonus GHCs
  • 500+ Euros – 20% bonus GHCs

To see how many GHCs you will be awarded for loading a given amount of Euros on to your account, log in to your Nurburgring driving account and click on the My GHD tab.

There are 4 options to load your account, the first 3 are pre-set amounts where it shows you the amount of bonus GHCs awarded. The 4th option is a user-defined amount, where you enter the amount you want to load and it shows you the bonus credits you will receive.

Nurburgring prices shown for tourist driving laps

The minimum amount you can load on your account to get one free weekday lap is 200 Euros. For this you will get a 15% bonus, so you will be awarded 30 Green Hell Credits.

The minimum amount you need to load to get a free weekend lap is 235 Euros; the 15% bonus will give you 35 bonus GHCs.

Bear in mind that because of the tiered bonus system, you would get 30 credits if you loaded 200 Euros on to your account in one go. If, however, you did two separate loads of 100 Euros, which is in the 10% bonus tier, you would get two bonuses of 10 GHCs, so only 20 credits in total and not enough to redeem a full lap on weekend nor weekday.

nurburgring tourist days 2024

Above are a couple of examples of how many GHCs would be awarded for different Euro load amounts. Loading 600 Euros on to your account would give you 120 bonus Green Hell Credits.

If you were only going to do weekday laps at a cost of 30 Euros a lap, you would get 20 laps from your original load of 600 Euros, plus another 4 laps from your 120 bonus credits. So a total of 24 laps, which you can either think of as getting 4 free laps, or you paid 600 Euros for 24 laps which averages out to be 25 Euros a lap.

If you are planning to do a good number of laps, think about loading your card in bulk to gain from the higher tiered bonuses.

Season ticket / Saisonkarte 2024 nurburgring prices

In 2024 the cost for the yearly season ticket is  3000 Euros. With this you get an unlimited number of laps to be used on any of the tourist driving sessions across the whole year, on both the Nordschleife and the Nurburgring GP track.

The Nurburgring are offering an early-bird discount on season ticket purchases for 2024. If you purchase a ticket before the 22nd December 2023 you will save 250 Euros, so the season ticket will cost you 2750 Euros.

As a season ticket holder you get some other benefits like a personalised card, a Nordschleife trackwalk, ‘backstage’ access to NLS endurance races, a 20 Euro voucher for the fan shop, 10% off one purchase of track photos at Racetracker.de and a few more things that seem barely worthwhile and slightly insulting considering you’re shelling out 3 grand!

Click here for more info on the season ticket and a full list of the benefits.

To make the season ticket worthwhile, you need to do a good number of laps. The numbers below are how many laps you would need to do to break even on the cost of the Nurburgring season ticket against buying individual laps. If you do more than the breakeven number of laps over a year, the season ticket becomes better value.

Full price season ticket

Nurburgring ticket costs and prices 2023

These numbers above do not include the free laps you might get from bonus Green Hell Credits, as mentioned earlier. Bear those in mind if you are weighing up whether a season ticket is worth it or not, as buying in big chunks to get the discounts will push the breakeven point higher.

For example, if you bought lap tickets in a 500 Euro block to get the maximum 20% bonus, you would receive 600 GHCs. This gives you 20 bonus weekday laps at 30 Euros each, or 17 bonus weekend laps at 35 Euros each.

Nurburgring track day prices

You may wonder whether doing a track day at the Ring is better value than tourist laps. If you haven’t already, check out our post on Nurburgring Track Days where we discuss the benefits of a track day over tourist driving, and also share a few tips on what to look out for when booking a track day.

Be mindful that different trackday providers at the Ring have different policies on third party liability, as discussed in that post.

We have put together a comprehensive list of the track days at the Ring in 2023. List of Nurburgring trackdays in 2023

To compare the value of track days to toursit driving, take this Nurburgring track day with Circuit Days, a cost of £599 or 670 Euros. To buy a weekend lap ticket for Touristenfahrten is now 35 Euros, meaning 20 laps or more during the trackday would bring the per-lap cost down to less than the 35 Euros of a TF lap.

20 laps in one trackday would be good going, but with no closures and some consecutive lapping  then it is feasible.

German Version

New date for the 24h Nürburgring 2024

The 24h Nürburgring will take place on the weekend of Corpus Christi in 2024 (30 May to 2 June). This was announced today by the organising ADAC Nordrhein. The rescheduling had become necessary because a round of the FIA WEC in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, had been scheduled at short notice for the Ascension weekend at the beginning of May, which had already been planned for years. For many teams and drivers, the overlap of the two events would have posed hardly solvable problems, as the FIA World Endurance Championship will also announce a class for the GT3 cars that have been competing at the Nürburgring for years from 2024. "We didn't want to impose this on our participants, nor on the endurance fans," said Walter Hornung, race director of the 24h Nürburgring. "Since the organisers of Rock am Ring and also the Nürburgring have been extremely flexible, we were able to make the postponement possible." Rock am Ring will take place as planned on 7 to 9 June 2024, but the set-up and dismantling times of the two mega-events, which now take place in immediate succession, had to be drastically shortened.

"Precisely because we know how complex the coordination with other series and individual events in GT3 racing is, we have already announced 2021 to 2028 dates for the 24h Nürburgring," says Walter Hornung. "Of course, all the relevant players are aware of this so that scheduling overlaps in the international calendar are avoided and collisions with other major events at the same venue are prevented. We are all the happier that Rock am Ring and the Nürburgring are joining us in taking on the short-term logistical and technical challenge of having two completely different events, each with tens of thousands of spectators, take place one right after the other." Advance sales for Rock am Ring have already opened at www.rock-am-ring.com, and tickets for the 24h Nürburgring 2024 will also be available shortly at www.24h-rennen.de.
