Carnival Cheers drink package: Will it save you money on your next cruise?

A Carnival cruise vacation just doesn't feel complete without a few fruity frozen cocktails and a nightly glass of wine or two at dinner. Whether you're a casual drinker or a spirits enthusiast, you might be wondering if the Carnival Cheers drink package is right for you.

The beauty of cruising is that almost everything is included — transportation, accommodations, dining and entertainment. But when you're navigating onboard expenses, there's one place where the spending can add up quickly: drinks.

The Carnival Cheers package takes care of drinks by covering almost all of your beverage consumption (alcoholic or otherwise) under one fixed price per day. It can save you money on your next cruise if you're planning to, well, drink like you're on a cruise.

Other cruise lines offer tiered drink packages , breaking out their standard alcoholic selection from the top-shelf liquors. With Carnival Cruise Line's Cheers drink package, however, you get almost all alcoholic drinks up to $20 each.

To help you decide whether to book the Carnival Cheers package, we'll cover how much it costs, which drinks are included (and perhaps more importantly, which aren't) and whether it's the best option to help you stick to your beverage budget. Plus, we'll show you how to break down whether you're getting a good value based on how much you expect to drink on an average day.

What's included in the Carnival Cheers drink package?

First, let's clarify which beverages are already included in your standard Carnival cruise fare. Non-bottled water, lemonade, unsweetened iced tea, hot chocolate, non-specialty coffee and tea, juices (orange, tomato, apple or grapefruit) and regular, skim and chocolate milk are all available to cruise guests at no additional charge.

Carnival's Cheers package includes all spirits, cocktails, beer and wine by the glass, up to $20 each, plus these additional nonalcoholic options:

• Smoothies, juices and milkshakes
• Specialty coffee and tea
• Virgin drinks, including zero-proof frozen cocktails
• Energy drinks
• Standard 500-milliliter water bottles and other nonalcoholic bottled beverages
• Large water bottles in the dining room and specialty restaurants

The drink package also includes a 25% discount on any spirit or wine by the glass over the $20 limit, bottles of wine and Champagne, and beverage seminars and classes.

The package covers or discounts nearly everything you might want to drink on board, but there are some exceptions. Here's what's not included:

• Bottles of alcohol (aside from beer)
• Large shareable drinks like pitchers, tubes and buckets
• Drinks in souvenir glasses
• Double shots and floaters (because it's like ordering two drinks at once)
• Drinks offered at the gangway or at any port of call, including the cruise line's private islands
• Room service or minibar drinks
• Drinks from automated wine dispensers

Gratuities are also included with the Cheers drink package because you'll be paying an 18% service charge on top of the package price. If you're ordering drinks while within U.S. waters at a port or before embarking from your home port, you will still be charged tax. For example, if you order a $10 drink and the local tax is 10%, you'll be charged $1 for tax but not for the drink itself.

How much does Carnival's drink package cost?

The Carnival Cheers package price starts at $59.95 per person, per day when you purchase it online before the cruise, plus an 18% service charge. It's $64.95 per person, per day (plus the 18% service charge) if you wait until you're on board to purchase Carnival's drink package. Early planners save a little less than 10% by preordering.

If one person in your cabin purchases the Cheers package, every adult age 21 or over in the same room must also do so. The rule aims to keep you from sharing free drinks while paying for only one package. Carnival's terms state there are no exceptions to this rule, and when we contacted the Carnival team, they confirmed that includes pregnant adults.

You have to purchase the package for the duration of the cruise. If you wait until you're on board to buy the package, you must purchase it on the first day of your sailing. You cannot try out the package for a single day or start it midway through the cruise — unless you're sailing from New York or Texas, where drink packages get activated at 6 a.m. on the second day of the cruise due to local laws. The Carnival Cheers package isn't offered on two-day cruises.

If you're looking for a Carnival Cheers promo code for a drink package discount or a free drink package deal, these offers aren't widely available. Carnival might send out targeted offers to certain members of its VIFP Club loyalty program and casino guests based on their travel and spending history with the cruise line.

To activate a pre-purchased Cheers drink package, go to the Casino Bar when you get on board. Otherwise, you can purchase the package at various bar locations on the ship. The bartender will give you a sticker to place on your Sail & Sign card so servers and bartenders know you have the package.

What's the Carnival drink package limit?

If you plan on making the most of the Carnival Cheers package, you'll find a generous drink limit of 15 alcoholic beverages per day (and a value limit of $20 per alcoholic drink, as we mentioned earlier).

That's 15 alcoholic drinks per 24-hour period running from 6 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, so late-night partiers can't take advantage of bonus drinks after the clock strikes midnight. If anyone looks like they're drinking beyond their personal limits — even if they haven't reached 15 — staff members are trained not to serve guests who look intoxicated.

The package does not place a daily limit on sodas and other nonalcoholic beverages.

Drinks must be ordered one at a time (whether alcoholic or not), with a wait time of five minutes between drink orders. Carnival sets these rules to prevent you from ordering drinks for cruisers who haven't purchased a drink package. So what happens when you want to order a round of drinks for friends? The first drink will count toward your Cheers package limit, and the rest will be charged to your account.

Is the Carnival Cheers package worth it?

Whether the drink package is worth it on Carnival depends on how much alcohol you plan to drink — and which kind. Are you more of a beer drinker, or are you into wine, spirits and cocktails? Beer is generally cheaper, so it would take more drinks per day to add up to the daily value of the Cheers package.

If you have multiple sea days during your sailing, you'll likely get more value from your package since there's more time on board to drink. Otherwise, on port days, you'll need to get your drinks in at breakfast, dinner and late-night bar-hopping.

Based on the starting price of drinks on board, you can get your money's worth by drinking roughly six cocktails, eight glasses of wine or 10 beers each day — and that doesn't include the water bottles, specialty coffees or sodas you'd surely order, too.

Most people mix it up, but you can do the math to see how your likely drink orders will stack up. Here are the starting prices for drinks on board, according to Carnival:

• Beer: starting at $6.50 (mostly 16 ounces)
• Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
• Mixed drinks: $7.50 to $20
• Specialty cocktails: starting at $10.50 (excluding souvenir glassware and premium selections)
• Soft drinks: $2.75
• Specialty coffee: $2.50 to $4.25
• Energy drinks: $4.95
• Water (San Benedetto bottled water and coconut water): $1.50 to $5

In other words, you'll save money if you and the other adults in your cabin plan to drink your fair share of alcoholic beverages every day. If you're a moderate drinker — who'd order three or four alcoholic drinks and a handful of nonalcoholic beverages in a day — or if you drink but your cabinmate doesn't, it's probably not worth getting the beverage package.

Even if you're a caffeine fiend who drinks coffee and soda all day, it's hard to recoup the costs of the Carnival Cheers package on nonalcoholic beverages alone.

If you're under 21 or don't drink alcohol, you might want to consider the Bottomless Bubbles package for soft drinks. Carnival's all-inclusive soda program covers all soft drinks and juices and costs $6.95 per day for children and $9.50 per day for adults (plus the 18% service charge). It doesn't include other nonalcoholic beverages, such as bottled water and specialty coffee; drinks ordered through room service and the minibar also are not included.

There's another way to think about the value of the Cheers package. Some people are looking for the unquantifiable peace of mind that comes with not worrying about drink costs adding up at every turn. If that's you, creating a more all-inclusive experience on board might justify the cost of the package, even if you don't break even with drink prices.

What are other ways to get free or cheap drinks on Carnival?

If you've decided the Carnival Cheers package isn't worth the cost, you might still want some tips on scoring free or cheaper drinks during your cruise. Here are our top tips for drinking for less on a Carnival cruise ship.

• Hit the casino. You can get free drinks if you spend enough time playing in the casino. Once you earn enough casino points in Carnival's players club, you can order cocktails, beer, wine and even sodas for free while you're gaming.
• Dine in a specialty restaurant on night one. You can get a free or half-price bottle of wine at some of Carnival's signature restaurants if you make a reservation for the first night. The cruise line offers ​​one bottle of complimentary house wine per two guests at any onboard steakhouse, Rudi's Seagrill, Il Viaggio, JiJi Asian Kitchen and Cucina del Capitano (except Cucina on Excel-class ships). On both the first and second nights, guests can also receive a 50% discount on wines listed under $100 at all steakhouses, Rudi's Seagrill and Il Viaggio.
• Head to an art auction. Even if you don't consider yourself an art collector, you can walk away from Carnival's art auctions with something else: free Champagne. Check the schedule of onboard activities to find out when the auctions are taking place during your sailing and sip on complimentary bubbly while you watch art aficionados bid on the gallery's artworks. (Drink responsibly, though, so you don't end up bidding on art you never meant to purchase and bring home.)
• Use a coffee punch card. Another place where Carnival rewards passengers with free drinks is the JavaBlue coffee shop. Grab a punch card on your first day, and once you've ordered six specialty coffees or milkshakes, you get one free. As someone who's sailed Carnival often with family members who have coffee running through their veins 24/7, we've found these coffee punch cards to be a nice bonus. Just remember to present the card for a punch with every order, and you can get through six punches pretty quickly if you're ordering multiple coffees or shakes as a group.

There are also a few ways to bring your own drinks on board Carnival for free. Every guest age 21 or over is allowed to bring one 750-milliliter bottle of wine or Champagne in their carry-on on embarkation day. There's a corkage fee of $15 per bottle if you drink it in the main dining room, specialty restaurants or bars, which is why we like to bring Champagne and pop open the bottle in our room for sail away. (Just don't forget to pack a corkscrew!)

Don't think you can get away with buying duty-free alcohol on the ship or at a port and drinking it on board, though. The ship will hold any duty-free purchases for you until disembarkation day.

You can also bring up to a 12-pack of nonalcoholic beverages in 12-ounce cans or cartons. Acceptable beverages include soda, sparkling water, energy drinks, juice and milk.

Bottled waters and soft drinks cannot be brought on board, but you can preorder water bottles to your room through the Carnival website and have them delivered to your stateroom on embarkation day. A 12-pack of standard water bottles (16.9 ounces) costs $9.95 plus an 18% delivery fee, an eight-pack of large 1.5-liter bottled water costs $20 plus the delivery fee and single 1.5-liter water bottles cost $3.95 each plus delivery.

Bottom line

If you and your cabinmates (this is key) are ready to drink it up on your Carnival cruise — and our bet is you are if you're reading this story — the Carnival Cheers drink package could save you money by capping your daily beverage spend at $64.95 per person, per day (plus gratuity). Use Carnival's average drink prices listed above to calculate your expected cost of drinks each day and see if it would come out to more than the price of the package.

But if you're more of a moderate drinker who can't see yourself partaking in more than five alcoholic drinks per day (or if your cabinmate won't be drinking), skip the drink package on your next sailing and consider other ways to save instead, like bringing your own wine bottles or soft drinks on board and taking advantage of free drinks wherever Carnival offers them.

Carnival Sale Offers Free Drink Packages With Cruises

Are you a Carnival VIFP member? If so, then you might have received an email announcing a new deal that you could want to take advantage of.

Carnival is offering a sale where past guests receive a free CHEERS! drink package for themselves and a guest when they book. The “Free Cheers to You!” sale is valid from now through December 13, 2020. According to the email we received, if you book a qualifying deal, then both you and one travel companion get the drink package included with your cruise.

Considering the drink package runs about $55 per person, per day (before the 18% gratuity is tacked on), this is a great freebie. For reference, including the gratuity, a person traveling on a week-long cruise would pay about $470 in total if they bought the drink package on the ship. 

There is some fine print you should know, however. Specifically, Carnival lays out all the following stipulations with the offer:

• Full non-refundable deposit
• Maximum number of 2 guests in the stateroom
• Available on Ocean View categories and above (no inside cabins)
• Available on select sailings between April 2021 – December 2021
• Eligible VIFP Club Member must sail to qualify for this offer
• Book by December 13, 2020
• Rate Code RU9 will be automatically applied at checkout

Note that this offer is “capacity controlled” according to the Terms and Conditions . It also seems only for VIFP members (Carnival’s loyalty program for past cruisers). So if you want to book, check your email. You could also try calling Carnival and mentioning the “RU9” rate code.

High Cruise Fares Along With the Drink Package

Before you get too excited, you should know that you’ll see higher rates with this offer than you’d find otherwise. We’ve looked and noticed that cabin prices for this deal are hundreds of dollars higher than the regular prices.

For example, we looked at the price of a 6-day cruise aboard the Carnival Horizon, departing Miami on August 1.

With the “Free Cheers to You!” deal, the oceanview cabin cruise fare is $1,079 per person, a balcony is $1,279 per person, and a suite is $1,869 per person. (These prices are before any taxes or port fees.)

Fares with the drink package included:

• Oceanview: $1,079
• Balcony: $1,279
• Suite: $1,869

That same cruise under the current sale pricing without the drink package is lower. Without the package, it’s $759 per person for the oceanview cabin, $959 for the balcony, and $1,569 for the suite.

Regular sale fare without the drink package included:

• Oceanview: $759
• Balcony: $959
• Suite: $1,569

In other words, the drink package — which would cost $403 per person for this six-day cruise if bought aboard the ship — increases the cost of the cruise fare by $320 per person for an oceanview, $320 for a balcony cabin, and $300 for a suite .

So you are getting a discount overall, but the savings aren’t as large as you might think.

Do the Math Before Booking & Know the Rules

Even so, if you plan on getting a drink package during your cruise, then this deal can save you some money.

But before you book, we suggest you learn the ins and outs of the CHEERS! package to make sure you will get your money’s worth.

The drink package offers a lot to like. For the set daily charge, you get your choice of nearly any beverage on the ship. Want a margarita by the pool? Or a glass of wine with dinner? Simply head to the bar and it’s yours. You know exactly what you pay each day and never have to worry about a surprise bill.

That said, there are some rules around the package that you’ll want to know. For one, if one person in the cabin orders the CHEERS! package, then all adults in the cabin have to order it as well. There is also a limit on alcoholic drinks of 15 beverages per 24-hour period (there are no limits on non-alcoholic drinks).

You also have to purchase the package for the entire cruise. So even if you are in port all day and can’t take advantage, you’re still charged.

You’ll want to keep these rules in mind to know if you’ll get your money’s worth, or if you’d be better off booking the lower rate without the package.

So although the CHEERS! package is $59.95, plus the gratuities, it comes out to about $70.75 per person, per day.

The reason behind this additional charge is to appropriately compensate the hardworking bartenders and other crew members who provide exceptional service during your cruise..

Can One Person Get A Drink Package On Carnival?

If you choose to purchase the drink package, all other members of your cabin who are 21+ years old will also be required to purchase the package.

This ensures a fair system and prevents guests from sharing drinks with those who have not paid for the package.

What Drinks Are Included In The Carnival Drink Packages?

With the CHEERS! Beverage Program, you’ll have access to a vast selection of drinks that cater to all your preferences.

The package covers various cocktails and spirits, giving you the chance to explore new flavors while cruising. If you’re more of a beer lover, you can look forward to a range of beers by the glass, starting at 16-ounces.

If you’re looking for something sweet and refreshing, the drink package has you covered with zero-proof frozen cocktails .

You can also enjoy energy drinks, milkshakes, smoothies, and juices.

For coffee and tea lovers, the package includes specialty coffees and non-specialty coffee and tea options as well.

Comforting options like hot chocolate are also part of the package.

Apart from these exciting drink choices, the package includes staple beverages such as non-bottled water, lemonade, and iced tea .

The CHEERS! Package excludes:

• Beverages promoted and sold in souvenir glasses
• Bottles of liquor
• Beverages offered at gangway
• Beverages offered through room service, mini bars and/or in-stateroom beverage programs
• Sharing cocktails, floaters, pitchers, tubes and buckets
• Beverages offered through enomatic wine machines
• All other beverage-related programs including merchandise, cigars and cigarettes

The Bottomless Bubbles, on the other hand, includes all non-alcoholic soft drinks and juices .

Does The Drink Package Work On Carnival’s Private Islands Or In Ports?

Unfortunately, the drink packages are not included on the private islands or ports. They can only used for beverages on the ship.

This means that even though Carnival has private islands for their guests, the drink package cannot be used there.

It’s important to note that this policy applies to all ports of call and private islands, so it’s a good idea to plan accordingly if you’re expecting to spend a significant amount of time off the ship.

How Will The Bartender Know I Have Purchased The CHEERS! Package?

When you purchase the CHEERS! package, it will automatically be linked to your Sail & Sign card.

This card is your key to everything while aboard the ship, including your cabin door and making purchases.

Each time you order a drink at the bar, simply hand your Sail & Sign card to the bartender.

They will swipe or scan your card to confirm that you have the CHEERS! package.

As a visual indicator, after your first drink purchase using the CHEERS! package, a sticker will be placed on your Sail & Sign card.

This sticker serves as a quick reference for bartenders and servers to confirm your participation in the program.

So even if a new bartender is serving you, they will easily recognize the sticker as proof of your beverage package.

It is important to always carry your Sail & Sign card while on the ship. Not only will you need it to access your drinks through the CHEERS! package, but it is also required for various other onboard activities and purchases.

Furthermore, it’s a good idea to keep track of your daily drink consumption and make sure you are adhering to the program’s limitations.

With the CHEERS! package, you can enjoy up to 15 alcoholic beverages per day, as well as unlimited non-alcoholic drinks.

How to Buy A Drink Package For Your Carnival Cruise

To purchase the CHEERS! drink package, you should start by visiting Carnival Cruise Line’s official website.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

As far as a promo code, sorry it doesn't work that way. The offers and promo codes are specific to individual customers. So, for example, I get an offer/promo code, you can't use it. If I book a cabin with you in it, I have to be on the cruise in the cabin with you. I can't book with a promo code that I have for a second cabin that I am not in. Also, from my experience, most promo codes that an individual gets are only good for a certain number of cruises.

The way to get an offer from any cruise line, is to cruise with them once. Everybody doesn't get the same offers. You can see on this site some discussion on that topic. You can use the search function at the top of the pages to help.

Is the package ever discounted more than 10% prior to the cruise?  I have been waiting on an email that will perhaps offer a bigger discount.

I think they are referring to when you check out there is a spot that says "have a promo code".

Not to my knowledge. They were doing a lot of promotion with the RU1, RU2, and RU3 fare code offers to get more bookings amid all the Covid cancellations. Wife had RU2 for $15/day on 12/26 Horizon/Sunshine.

Thanks for all your input!  1kaper was spot on. That is exactly what I’m referring to. I called and carnival stated that they’ve slowed down with the promo codes.  I went ahead and purchased.  I guess the 10% is all I get this time around.

Carnival Drink Package Breakdown: Is “Cheers!” Right for You?

One of the best ways to save some cash and inject some peace-of-mind into a Carnival cruise, is by pre-booking a Carnival drink package before you set sail. Like any cruise line’s beverage offerings, Carnival drinks can be as pricey as they are delicious, leaving unprepared cruisers with the conundrum of whether to order that next drink or try to keep their vacation under budget. Do away with all that drama by getting a drink package before your cruise and you won’t have to worry about your bank account when you are supposed to be kicking back and enjoying your vacation!

Cheers! Carnival Drink Package

With the aptly named Cheers! package, you will enjoy unlimited Carnival drinks for the duration of your cruise for one flat price paid up front. This way, you can enjoy your vacation without having to worry about how much you are spending at the bar. There is one caveat for ships sailing from Texas and New York, which is that the package activation starts at 6:00 AM on the second day of your cruise, but it will still cover you all the way until you disembark. Additionally, you can save 10% by pre-booking, meaning before 11:59 PM the day before embarkation or before 9:00 PM EST over the phone.

What Carnival Drinks Are Included?

The Carnival drink package includes all spirits (including cocktails), beers, and glasses of wine that are under $20. If you want drinks over $20, wine or champagne by the bottle, or a beverage seminar or class, those will be reduced by 25%. Additionally, non-alcoholic beverages are also fully covered, such as sodas, Zero-Proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, and bottled water. Alcoholic drinks may be your reason for getting this package, but non-alcoholic drinks are just as crucial. Whether you need a pick-me-up from coffee or tea in the morning, or a nice cold water to cool you down during the day, you’ll be glad to have the Cheers! package in your corner.

What is Not Included?

What drinks are not covered or discounted by Cheers! are any Carnival drinks that are sold in souvenir glasses, bottles of liquor, beverages offered at gangway, room service drinks, mini bar drinks, or in-stateroom beverage programs. It also only covers drinks for one person, so sharing cocktails, floaters, pitchers, tubes, and buckets will be full price. Enomatic wine machines are also not part of the Carnival drink package, nor are any other beverage-related programs that include merchandise, cigars, or cigarettes.

Bottomless Bubbles

If you are not a big alcohol drinker, then there is still a Carnival drink package that might be good for you. The Bottomless Bubbles package gets you unlimited soda and juice for the full duration of your cruise. This includes at restaurants, during shows, or anywhere else on the ship, excluding room service and mini bar drinks. You can pick this package up at the lobby, casino, or at any pool bars, or you can pre-purchase before your cruise (although you won’t get a discount like with the Cheers! package).

Is a Drink Package Worth It?

Getting a drink package can save you money while also adding convenience to buying and budgeting your drinks. But if you don’t use it enough, you could end up leaving money on the table. Whether or not a Carnival drink package is worth your investment is going to depend on your own drinking habits. Check the current pricing for a drink package and weigh that against how much you think you are likely to drink in a day to determine if you will be saving money. Remember to factor in drinks other than just alcoholic Carnival drinks. There are a few basic things you need to know about the drink packages on Carnival before we dive into the details of each option.

• The stated prices do not include the additional 18% service charge which is added when purchasing the package. Additionally, applicable state and local taxes will be applied to purchases made in US waters once onboard the ship.
• Beverage packages are non-refundable and non-transferable after 9 PM ET the evening before departure.
• Drink packages on Carnival are not offered on 2 day cruises or charter cruises 
• You can use these packages almost everywhere on the ship. This includes the bars and lounges, complimentary dining venues, and specialty restaurants.
• However, they do not work at the cruise line’s private islands of Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays in the Bahamas.

Of course, it is never mandatory to buy a drink package. The drink packages on Carnival are add-ons to your cruise vacation. However, there is no sharing of the package or using your package to order drinks for other cruisers.

So, if one guest in the stateroom wishes to purchase a beverage package, each adult in the cabin needs to purchase one as well.

Of course, staff do have the right to refuse you bar service if you are intoxicated. Knowing your limits is just as important on a cruise ship as it is during your regular life!

Cheers Program

Carnival Cruise Line offers only one alcoholic drink package, known as the Cheers Beverage Program. Many cruisers refer to this as the unlimited drink package, as it includes essentially all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for a flat daily rate.

The pricing of this package starts at $59.95 per person, per day (plus gratuity).

This plan covers all alcoholic beverages, including beers, wine and champagne by the glass, and cocktails and spirits up to $20. This also includes the self-serve beer stations.

Further, this Carnival drink package also includes soda, virgin cocktails, juices, specialty coffees and teas, milkshakes, energy drinks, Powerade and Vitamin Water, and 500ml bottled water.

The Cheers Program also entitles cruisers to a 25% discount off of any drink costing more than the $20 allotment, wine and champagne by the bottle, and beverage seminars and classes.

However, there are some exclusions to the Cheers Program. This includes beverages sold in souvenir glasses and bottles of liquor. Also, drinks sold at the gangway, through room service, or the mini-bar are also not included in this beverage package. Thanks for all of this info. My wife and I will be taking our first cruise on the Carnival Panorama in May.

I like the drink package but do not agree with the pricing structure. For instance on a five day cruise you are charged for the day you leave the ship and you must leave by 8 A.M. why are you charging for that day? In addition the first day you don’t board until lunch so half that day is gone. I think a 5 day cruise should be based on a 4 day pricing structure, a seven day cruise should be a six day pricing structure, etc.

On a 5day cruise you only use for 4 days, so why do we get charged for 5 days.

Our first cruise (4ngt/5 day) we kept a conservative tab on drink expenditures and did not buy the package. We ended up spending between $80.00 -100.00 more then the unlimited Royal Caribbean Drink Pkg. This trip booked for 21 we have bought the DP for 50% off which means we should be $180.00 ahead-roughly speaking. In our case the UDP is a great bargain.

It’s infuriating to me that Carnival does not have a non-alchoholic refreshment package like Royal Carribean. I would love to not have to pay the more expensive price for a drink package that includes alchohol that I will not be consuming! Royal carribean offers this exact package and I love it. It’s a bit more than the soda package but obviously isnt as much as the packages that include alchohol. It’s about $25 a day and you can actually use it on their private island. Come on Carribean!!

They do. It’s called “Bottomless Bubbles” and its $8.50 a day. “Enjoy ice-cold refreshments during meals, during shows, during, well… anytime you want with Bottomless Bubbles. This unlimited program lets you indulge in all-you-can-drink soda and juice for the full length of your cruise. Sweet! Bottomless Bubbles is available for purchase at the Lobby, Casino and Pool Bars. Restrictions apply.”

But the BB package does not include the mocktails, eg virgin mary. Other cruise lines offer soda, juice and mocktail packages.

Is carnival “considering” allowing the Cheers package on the private island (Half Moon Cay) for 2021 cruises? We have booked the Christmas Bahamas cruise on the Dream in December 2021. BTW- can’t wait to get back cruising again!!!!

Interesting… If I purchase the BB package (for 4nights/5days), I am losing out. I cannot board the first day until after 12pm, I cannot take advantage of my BB purchase on either private island, and the cruise is over at 8am the fifth day. Right?

This info is not correct. if there are more than one person in the cabin that wants the cheers package everyone has to purchase it. Not available for only one person. Unless the person is underage. They do this so no one will share drinks. However we all know it is all about the money.

Why wouldn’t it be “All about the money”? It’s a business, not a charity.

Well on a 5-day cruise you actually only get 4 days use of drink pkg but get charged for 5 days. Doesn’t make sense. We disembark on 5th day.

Is it cheaper to buy a drinks package on board? Here's what cruise passengers should know.

A latte in the morning here, a piña colada by the pool there. On a cruise, ordering drinks can rack up a steep bill before you know it.

Though beverages like water, regular coffee, iced tea and lemonade are generally included in cruise fares, others cost extra. That’s where drink packages come in handy.

The optional add-ons broaden the range of beverages you can order without worrying about incurring charges each time. But they aren’t always worth it, and it can be cheaper to quench your thirst a la carte.

“What I tell clients is: Do the math on it,” said Rusty Pickett, a travel adviser and owner of Shellback Cruises.

What do cruise drink packages include?

“Each cruise line has a different package system,” Pickett said. The packages typically range from more limited soda or coffee packages to those that cover a wide range of alcohol and other drinks.

Carnival offers a Bottomless Bubbles package that includes sodas and juice. The line’s Cheers! package includes those, plus spirits, beer and wine by the glass priced at $20 or less, specialty coffee and more (guests can order only one drink at a time and are limited to 15 alcoholic drinks in 24 hours). Carnival also offers wine-specific packages. 

Be sure to read the fine print, too, because there are often restrictions. On Royal Caribbean International ships, for example, beverage packages exclude drinks served in licensed Starbucks stores.

How much do cruise drink packages cost?

Beverage packages are typically priced per person, per day and sold for the duration of a cruise. Starting prices vary but can range from $10 to $15 for soda and specialty coffee packages to upward of $100 for those that include alcohol. Pickett also noted that a number of lines have raised drink package prices in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aforementioned Cheers!, Carnival's most comprehensive package, starts at $59.95 per person, per day, while the Bottomless Bubbles package starts at $6.95 for kids and $9.50 for adults. During a recent cruise on the line’s newest ship, Jubilee , cocktails at new venues Dr.Inks, Ph.D., and The Golden Mermaid were priced at $14 a la carte, plus an 18% gratuity charge. Beverage packages generally include gratuities, Pickett said.

The most I racked up in a single day on Jubilee – for two lattes at the ship's JavaBlue Cafe and Marina Bar; two bottles of water in my stateroom; and one cocktail at the Marina Bar that night (plus additional gratuities I added) – was $34.86.

“When (clients) want to talk it through, it's usually about how much you drink per day,” said Valerie Dorsey, a franchise owner and travel adviser at Cruise Planners. “And if you're only going to have one or two drinks, even at $15 a drink, it's still cheaper than buying a $100-a-day package.”

Mainstream cruise lines may offer lower prices if guests purchase a package advance, according to Dorsey (luxury lines tend to include more in their fares, including drinks). Operators may also bundle them as part of other offers.

Even if not for cost savings, Pickett and Dorsey both said some travelers are drawn to drink packages for the convenience. “They're willing to pay money for not being nickeled-and-dimed when they go up to the bar,” Pickett said.

Does everyone in the cabin need to get the drink package?

Often, all guests of legal drinking age in the same stateroom are required to purchase a drink package if any guest in the cabin buys one, including the Cheers! package and Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package .

Can I buy a drink package midcruise?

Even if you don't buy a drink package beforehand, you're not out of luck. Passengers may be able to buy them after they board, depending on when they make the purchase.

Royal Caribbean, for instance, sells drink packages on the first or second day of cruises four nights or longer; for sailings three nights or less, they're sold only on the first day. Celebrity Cruises (also part of Royal Caribbean Group), meanwhile, sells them up until three days before the end of a cruise.

Prices would be prorated on a per-day basis.

Can I bring my own drinks on a cruise?

Yes, depending on what it is. Beer and hard liquor are not allowed , but guests can bring wine or champagne to enjoy during their sailing – though Dorsey warned they will probably have to pay a corkage fee if they want to drink them outside their cabin.

For example, Princess Cruises charges $20 “should guests wish to consume their wine or champagne in the ship’s public areas,” according to its passage contract.

Guests may also be able to bring non-alcoholic drinks like bottled water, sodas and milk, but policies vary by line.

Dorsey also noted that if guests don’t mind going without espresso-based drinks or cocktails, they can opt not to buy a drink package at all. “I say to clients, ‘You don't have to put up extra money on a cruise if you don't want to.’ ”
