All international travellers must carry acceptable identification and a valid visa (if necessary) when entering Canada. A passport is recommended because it is the only reliable and universally-accepted travel and identification document for the purpose of international travel.

International transport companies, such as airlines, must make sure that travellers have proper, valid travel documents. If you do not have the proper documents, you may be delayed or refused entry into Canada . What you need will depend on where you are from, how you are travelling, and what documents you are travelling with. Consult entry requirements by country .

When you enter Canada, a border services officer will ask to see your passport and a valid visa, if you are arriving from a country for which one is required. Visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website to learn more about what travel documents are required.

Citizens of the U.S. who are members of the NEXUS program may present their membership card as proof of identification and as a document that denotes citizenship, when arriving by air (when coming from the U.S.), land, or marine modes.

Citizens of the U.S. who are members of the FAST program may use their cards as proof of identity when arriving by land and marine modes only.

Permanent residents of the U.S. who are members of the NEXUS or FAST programs must travel with a passport and proof of permanent residence , and may be asked to present these documents to the officer upon arrival at the border.

All visitors arriving from or transiting through the U.S. are encouraged to visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for information concerning the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, and the requirements to enter or return to the U.S.

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an Electronic Travel Authorization ( eTA ) to fly to or transit through Canada.

Exceptions, or visa and eTA-exempt foreign nationals, include:

  • U.S. citizens
  • U.S Lawful Permanent Residents
  • travellers with a valid Canadian visa
  • Other exceptions

Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, and Canadian permanent residents do not need to apply for an eTA.

Foreign nationals from select visa-required countries may also travel to or through Canada by air using an eTA , if eligible .

Be prepared: Apply for an eTA before you book your flight to Canada. Most applicants get approved within minutes. However, some applications can take several days to process so don’t wait until the last minute.

  • Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization

  • Dual citizens
  • Canadian permanent residents
  • Lawful permanent residents of the U.S.

Travellers who apply for an eTA are advised to be cautious in all dealings with companies that claim to offer help in getting an eTA. These companies are not operating on behalf of the Government of Canada. Many have established websites that charge a fee to provide information and submit eTA applications.

ETA UK visa waiver for Canadian citizens

United kingdom eta requirements from canada.

Citizens of Canada will soon to need to apply for an online visa waiver in order to enter the country. The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) will allow Canadian travellers to apply online in a matter of minutes, from wherever they are in the world.

The ETA will eventually be mandatory to citizens of all countries who are currently visa-exempt, including nationals of Canada. The programme allows the UK government to ensure faster border controls and increase the security for UK nationals and visitors alike.

Below, you can learn about when you need an ETA for the UK as a Canadian citizen, the requirements you need to meet, and how you can easily submit an application through Etauk.uk.

Do Canadians need a visa to travel to the UK?

Canadians are currently exempt from applying for a visa if they are visiting the UK for short-term stays.

However, once citizens of Canada become eligible, they will need to apply for the UK ETA . It is important to note that the ETA is not a visa, it is a visa waiver, and it allows visitors to spend a maximum of 6 months in the country, for approved travel purposes.

This authorisation is also a multiple-entry permit. This means you can use it to enter the UK multiple times during the 2-year validity of the ETA, or until the associated passport expires.

The ETA does not cover trips for work or study longer than 6 months , or any trip that requires a longer stay. For such reasons, Canadian travellers may need to contact the closest British embassy and request a visa .

UK ETA approved travel reasons for Canadian visitors

The approved travel reasons for Canadians visiting the UK with an ETA are the following:

  • Tourism/leisure
  • Visits to family or friends
  • Short-term study
  • Transit (including if not crossing UK border)

Additionally, Canadians with an ETA can come to the UK on the Creative Worker visa concession . However, in this case the maximum stay is 3 months.

What are the conditions for applying for the UK ETA from Canada?

The conditions for obtaining the UK ETA from Canada are as follows:

  • Possessing a valid Canadian passport
  • Having an active email address (important to receive the ETA)
  • Possessing a credit or debit card to pay for the ETA processing fee

UK ETA application process for citizens of Canada

The UK ETA application process for citizens of Canada is extremely fast and straightforward. Applicants will need to follow three simple steps:

  • Complete the ETA application form online
  • Pay for the ETA fee
  • Submit the application

The entire process takes no longer than 10 minutes to complete. What’s more, if you apply with us though Etauk.uk our team of experts are available to help you with any doubts through our live application chat.

After sending the application for review, you can expect to receive a confirmation via email within 72 hours .

Delays may happen if any mistakes are detected in the application form. To avoid this or even a denial of the ETA, ensure that all the information provided is mistake-free .

UK ETA application form for Canadian citizens

The UK ETA application form for Canadians contains different sections. Each part must be filled in entirely, ensuring every detail is correct. The form requires you to provide the following details:

  • Personal details such as the applicant’s full name, date of birth, and country of citizenship
  • Passport details , including the number, issuing country, date of issue and expiration
  • Contact details , including the applicant’s home address, email address, and phone number
  • The intended date of entry in the UK

Canadian travellers who possess more than one passport must use the same one for the online application to enter the United Kingdom. At border control, you need to scan your passport. The system will check the passport details match the ones in the ETA .

What are the benefits of the UK ETA for Canadians?

The main benefits of the ETA for Canadians and all international visitors are:

  • Increased safety for international travellers due to more accurate border controls
  • An automated system that makes border controls faster
  • An entirely digital application process that takes only a few minutes
  • Fast processing, which means that travellers do not need to apply long before their trip

canada travel document to uk

There are 4 types of travel documents available for those in different circumstances.

Convention Document (Refugee)

This document is for refugees who are unable to obtain a passport from their own country. The convention travel document allows the holder to travel from the UK and re-enter without issue upon returning. However, it does not allow the applicant to travel back to their home country or any country in which they sought asylum from.

The document is usually valid for ten years if the applicant has settled status (indefinite leave to remain) in the UK, or 5 years if they have permission to stay (leave to remain) or are under 15 years of age.

It costs £75 to apply as an adult or £49 for children aged 15 and under. However, the fee is waived if the applicant was born before 1 September 1929.

Stateless Person Document

This document is for people who are classed as stateless by the UK authorities and therefore cannot obtain a passport. It allows holders to travel to most countries in the world and return to the UK without restriction.

The document is valid for up to ten years if the applicant is settled in the UK and has indefinite leave to remain or 5 years for those that have permission to stay or leave to remain or are under the age of 15.

The fee for this document is £75 for adults (over 15) and £49 for children (15 or under). However, applicants born on or before 1 September 1929 do not have to pay the fee at all.

One-way Document

One-way documents (or IS137) are for non-UK citizens that wish to leave the UK permanently. The document allows them the right to leave the UK but not return. Applicants do not need to have settled status in order to apply. However, there are certain criteria that must be met in order to be considered for this document.

For example, the applicant must not be a British citizen, they must not be able to obtain a passport from their native country, they must not be facing deportation or have any pending criminal proceedings against them in the UK and they must want to leave the UK for good.

The document is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued and cannot be used to return to the UK under any circumstances. The fee for adults or those over 15 is £75, for those 15 and under it is £49 or it is free to apply if the applicant was born on or before 1 September 1929.

Certificate of Travel Document

This document is for those that have been refused a passport by their own nation’s authorities. It allows the holder to leave and re-enter the UK in replace of a traditional passport. To apply one of the following must be true:

  • Has settled status or permission to stay in the UK and has been refused a passport by their native country’s authorities.
  • In the UK under humanitarian protection and it’s been officially accepted that they are in fear of their native country’s authorities.
  • In the UK on a family visa as a dependent of someone with humanitarian protection.
  • Born in the UK as a child of a refugee and has permission to stay in the UK but does not have refugee status.
  • Has an important reason to travel but the native country’s authorities are unable to process travel documents quickly enough.

If the applicant has an important reason to travel, this and the fact that their native country’s authorities are unable to help must be proven as part of the application. This document is valid for up to 5 years if the applicant has settled status or until the permission to stay in the UK ends. Applicants can travel to most countries using this document except any of those from which they claimed asylum.

The fee for adults is currently £210 for those over the age of 15 and £141 for children aged 15 and under.

Introduction

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on which countries accept a UK Refugee Travel Document. The journey of a refugee is marked by immense challenges and uncertainties. Obtaining refugee status in a new country is a significant milestone, granting individuals the right to protection and a chance to rebuild their lives. One essential document that facilitates this journey is the UK Refugee Travel Document.

What exactly is a UK Refugee Travel Document, and why is it important? To put it simply, it is an official travel document issued to individuals who have been granted refugee status in the United Kingdom. This document serves as an identity proof and allows refugees to travel internationally while ensuring their protection and safety.

For refugees, having the ability to travel is not only a matter of personal freedom but can also be crucial in certain situations. Whether it is reuniting with family members, attending important events, or seeking educational and employment opportunities abroad, the UK Refugee Travel Document plays a vital role in facilitating these journeys.

In this article, we will delve into the countries that accept a UK Refugee Travel Document and explore any potential travel restrictions that may be imposed. We will also provide some valuable tips for traveling with a UK Refugee Travel Document, ensuring a smoother and more hassle-free experience.

It is important to note that travel regulations can vary between countries and are subject to change. We recommend consulting with the relevant authorities or embassies of the countries you plan to visit for the most up-to-date information. With that said, let’s explore the world of travel opportunities that await UK Refugee Travel Document holders.

What is a UK Refugee Travel Document?

A UK Refugee Travel Document, also known as a Convention Travel Document, is an official document issued by the UK government to individuals who have been granted refugee status in the United Kingdom. It serves as proof of identity and travel authorization for refugees, enabling them to travel internationally while enjoying the rights and protections granted to them through their refugee status.

The UK Refugee Travel Document is recognized by numerous countries around the world as a valid travel document, allowing refugees to enter and exit these countries and travel within their borders. It is important to note that this document is not a passport and does not grant the same privileges as a passport held by a citizen of a particular country. However, it serves as a viable alternative for refugees who are unable to obtain a passport from their home country.

The UK Refugee Travel Document is designed to comply with international standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). It contains essential information about the document holder, including their full name, date of birth, nationality (as “Refugee”), and a photograph. The document also includes a unique document number and is typically valid for up to 10 years, although the exact validity period may vary.

It is crucial to understand that the UK Refugee Travel Document is only issued to individuals who have been granted refugee status by the UK government. Refugees who have been given humanitarian protection or discretionary leave to remain in the UK may not be eligible for this travel document. It is essential to consult with the relevant immigration authorities or seek legal advice to determine eligibility and understand the specific requirements for obtaining a UK Refugee Travel Document.

With a UK Refugee Travel Document in hand, refugees gain the ability to travel internationally, which can be instrumental in a variety of situations. From attending family events and weddings to pursuing educational opportunities or participating in international conferences, the UK Refugee Travel Document opens up a world of possibilities and helps refugees maintain connections and build new lives beyond their country of refuge.

Overview of Refugee Convention Signatories

The international community recognizes the importance of protecting refugees and providing them with the rights and support they need. Several international agreements and conventions have been established to ensure the welfare and safety of refugees, one of which is the 1951 Refugee Convention.

The 1951 Refugee Convention, also known as the Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, is an international treaty that outlines the rights and obligations of signatory countries towards refugees. It defines who is considered a refugee and the legal protections they are entitled to receive.

Currently, 149 countries have signed and ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention, affirming their commitment to upholding the rights and protection of refugees. These signatory countries are obligated to offer assistance to refugees, including granting them access to legal protection, education, employment, and healthcare, among other essential services.

It is vital to note that not all countries that have signed the Refugee Convention automatically accept the UK Refugee Travel Document. Each country retains the authority to establish its own policies and requirements for accepting travel documents issued by other countries.

When planning international travel with a UK Refugee Travel Document, it is crucial to consider the specific travel regulations and restrictions implemented by each country you intend to visit. While many signatory countries accept the UK Refugee Travel Document, some may have additional requirements or restrictions that need to be taken into account.

It is also worth noting that there are some countries that, despite being signatories to the Refugee Convention, do not accept the UK Refugee Travel Document. Their decision may be based on various factors, including their internal immigration policies or diplomatic relations with the issuing country.

As such, it is imperative to thoroughly research and understand the travel policies of each country you wish to visit. Consulting with the relevant embassies or consulates is highly recommended to obtain accurate and up-to-date information regarding the acceptance of the UK Refugee Travel Document.

Overall, the Refugee Convention and its signatory countries play a crucial role in protecting and supporting refugees worldwide. It is through these international agreements that refugees are granted legal protections and the chance to rebuild their lives in a safe and welcoming environment. Understanding the nuances of each country’s acceptance policies ensures a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience for UK Refugee Travel Document holders.

It is crucial to check the visa requirements of the desired destination and apply well in advance.
  • Limited Stay Duration: Certain countries may impose limits on the duration of stay for UK Refugee Travel Document holders. It is essential to be aware of these restrictions and comply with the authorized length of stay to avoid legal issues or penalties.

If a destination is subject to an active travel advisory, it is important to assess the risks involved and consider whether travel to that particular country is advisable at the time.
  • Transit Restrictions: Some countries may have transit restrictions for individuals traveling with a UK Refugee Travel Document. This means that even if the destination country accepts the travel document, transiting through another country en route may not be permitted. It is crucial to check transit requirements and potential restrictions when planning multi-leg journeys.
  • Pre-clearance Requirements: In some cases, UK Refugee Travel Document holders may need to undergo pre-clearance procedures, such as obtaining an entry permit or providing additional documentation, before boarding a flight or entering a specific country. It is essential to verify if any pre-clearance requirements exist for the intended destination and comply with the necessary procedures.

It is important to note that travel restrictions can change over time and can vary between countries. Therefore, it is crucial for UK Refugee Travel Document holders to stay informed about the latest travel advisories, entry requirements, and immigration policies of the countries they plan to visit.

Before embarking on any international trip, it is highly recommended to consult with the relevant embassies, consulates, or immigration authorities of the destination countries. They will provide up-to-date and accurate information regarding any potential travel restrictions, visa requirements, or other necessary documents.

Are you a UK citizen planning to visit, work, or study in Canada? If so, it's essential to understand the Canadian visa requirements for UK citizens. Travelling to Canada has just been made easier with the removal of the COVID-19 border requirement as of October 1, 2022. However, Canada visa requirements still apply. So, if you plan on visiting the country for studies, tourism, visiting family or friends, marriage or investments, you will require some key documents and conditions for having a visa. These conditions differ for citizens of various countries.  Citizens of the UK (& its Overseas Territory) have the opportunity of travelling to Canada without using a visa. All they need to get is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for travels from 6 months and below. In this article, we'll walk you through the various visa types, application procedures, required documents, and associated costs for UK citizens.

In this article, you will find information on:

  • What type of visa do UK citizens need to visit Canada?
  • How do I apply for a Canadian visa as a UK permanent resident or citizen?

What Type of Visa Do UK Citizens Need to Visit Canada?

Generally, there are 2 major kinds of Canadian Visas; permanent resident visa and temporary resident visa, with all the other types of visas coming under these broad categories. This means there is a visa for almost everyone, depending on what your purpose for travelling to Canada is.

Some types of Canadian visas are; express entry visas, start-up visas, self-employment visas, refugee visas, provincial nominee visas etc. But if you are a UK citizen visiting Canada for a short period, (up to 6 months) you generally do not require a visa. Instead, you need to get an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for tourism, business, or transit purposes if you are travelling to Canada by air. You won’t need an eTA if you are travelling by land or sea. However, if you plan to work or study in Canada for more than 6 months, you will need to apply for a specific work or study permit. Likewise, if you need to stay for more than 6 months at a time for whatever legal reason, you will need to get the appropriate visa for your visit.

Here's an overview of the most common visa types(travel documents) for UK citizens:

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): This is an entry requirement that is meant for visa-exempt foreign nationals who want to travel to Canada by air. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to 5 years or until you renew your passport. It can only be used for short visits that are up to 6 months, nothing more.
  • Study permit: This is a document issued to UK students that allows them to study at Designated Learning Institutes (DLIs)in Canada. The Canadian study permit is usually valid for a stipulated period and may come with a restriction of movement, while in Canada. It is necessary for UK citizens planning to study in Canada for more than 6 months.
  • Work permit: This is a document that is issued by the IRCC to foreigners who want to work in Canada temporarily. It usually stipulates where they can work, who they can work for, the kind of work they can do and for how long they can do it.

How do I Apply for a Canadian Visa as a UK Permanent Resident or Citizen?

  • eTA Application: The process for getting the correct travel documents to Canada for a UK citizen is pretty straightforward. To get an eTA, UK citizens can apply online through the Government of Canada's official website. This is the only site authorised to receive the application and issue the eTA. The application process is simple, and you'll typically receive your eTA approval within minutes after paying the non-refundable fee of $7 CAD. However, in some cases, it may take a few days. It is recommended that you should apply for your eTA well in advance of your trip before you buy your flight ticket, in order to avoid any losses.
  • Student Permit Application: It is important to note that a student permit is not a visa and does not guarantee your entry into Canada. If you apply for a Canadian study permit , you will also need to apply for an eTA (for the academic pursuit of 6 months & less) or a visitor visa, as this is what will enable you to enter Canada.
  • Work Permit Application: For Canadian work permits , it is advised that you apply online. However, you can also apply by sending in a paper application attached with a note explaining that you are eligible to apply by paper . But you must note that online applications usually have faster processing times. To apply online, visit the Government of Canada's immigration and citizenship website and follow the step-by-step instructions. The government of Canada is currently prioritising processing work permits for essential service professions like Agriculture & Healthcare. If your occupation does not fall under these fields, your application might take longer to process. You can apply for a work permit outside Canada, in Canada or at a port of entry into Canada.

If you are applying for an eTA , here are the things you need to have in hand before your application.

  • A valid British passport .
  • A valid email address (the outcome of your eTA application will be communicated to you through this email).
  • A valid card (Visa card, Mastercard or American Express card)to make the non-refundable payment for the eTA.

Documents You Need to Apply for a Canadian Visa

If your visit to Canada from the UK will be over 6 months, here are the required documents for a Canadian visa application. They may vary, depending on the type of visa you're applying for.

Here's a general list of documents you may need:

  • A valid UK passport with at least six months of validity beyond your planned stay in Canada.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in Canada.
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs.
  • Completed application forms and any additional forms required for your specific visa type.

Middle East latest: Israel launches raid on Gaza hospital - fire breaks out and 'several killed'

An IDF raid on Gaza City's al Shifa hospital has caused multiple casualties and set off a fierce fire in one of the buildings, Palestinian health authorities say.

  • Live reporting by Ollie Cooper

The Israel Defence Forces has released footage of its overnight raid on al Shifa hospital.

The video, which is unverified, shows what Israel says is explosions and gunfire from Hamas fighters from the hospital.

Within the below clip is some picture sourced from social media - in which you can see smoke rising and hear the sound of gunshots.

A quick update to our 8.19am post now, and Mossad chief David Barnea and other high-level Israeli delegates have departed for talks in Qatar, a source has told our US partner network NBC News.

Although there is little optimism about a breakthrough in this round of talks, the official said all sides remained under intense American pressure to try to get to a deal.

We reported earlier that Mr Barnea and the delegation will offer a six-week ceasefire in exchange for 40 hostages.

The team has a "broad mandate" to hammer out a hostage deal in indirect negotiations with Hamas, Israeli officials told Hebrew media outlets, with one source saying both sides will need to show flexibility.

This stage of the negotiations could take at least two weeks, given the difficulties that Hamas's foreign delegates would likely have in communicating with the group's leadership in Gaza.

The European Union's foreign policy chief has accused Israel of weaponising food to provoke famine.

"In Gaza we are no longer on the brink of famine, we are in a state of famine, affecting thousands of people," Josep Borrell said at the opening of a conference on humanitarian aid for Gaza in Brussels.

"This is unacceptable - starvation is used as a weapon of war. Israel is provoking famine."

Israel has been widely criticised for not allowing more aid into the enclave since ground operations began last October - with lengthy checks required at tightly controlled border crossings.

Israel says it allows adequate aid in but that Hamas steals it, while also accusing humanitarian organisations of not doing enough.

More on the raid at al Shifa hospital now.

Eyewitnesses on the ground have suggested that military activity has not stopped at the hospital, with one reporting a "re-invasion" of Gaza's capital city.

"Suddenly, we started to hear sounds of explosions, several bombings, and soon tanks started to roll, they came from the western road and headed toward al Shifa, then sounds of gunfire and explosions increased," Mohammad Ali, who lives around 1km from the hospital, told Reuters.

"We don't know what is happening, but it looked as if it was a re-invasion of the Gaza City," he said.

He claimed military activities began overnight at around 1am (11pm last night UK time).

Other anonymous residents said tanks were operating at the edge of the Beach refugee camp - firing shells at some buildings nearby.

Near to al Shifa, Israeli army forces raided a school where displaced families are sheltering, and detained several men there, residents and Hamas media said - although this is unconfirmed.

The scale of Israel's operations in the capital remains unclear.

The capital saw fierce fighting in the early months of the war, but IDF attentions have turned elsewhere - with a major offensive in Khan Younis and widespread clearing operations to the north.

What do we know about the raid this morning?

The Israeli military said soldiers had conducted a "precise operation" based on intelligence that the hospital was being used by senior Hamas leaders.

The enclave's Hamas-run health ministry said a fire broke out at the entrance of the hospital complex, causing cases of suffocation among displaced women and children sheltering in the hospital.

The Israeli army dropped new leaflets around the hospital in Gaza City.

"To all those who exist or are displaced in Rimal and the displaced in al Shifa and its vicinity: you are in a dangerous combat zone.

"The IDF is operating hard in its residential areas to destroy terror infrastructure," said the statement.

The military issued drone footage of the operation (which we'll bring you shortly), while unverified video on social media appeared to show an Israeli tank blocking the hospital's main gate.

The Hamas-run health ministry claims at least 31,726 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza since 7 October.

The figures reported by the ministry do not differentiate between fighters and civilians.

A further 73,792 have been injured, it added.

Israel disputes all figures from the ministry, claiming Hamas is inflating them in order to create the illusion of a humanitarian crisis.

Hamas denies this and accuses Israel of deliberately targeting civilians.

The ministry says 81 Palestinians have been killed in the past 24 hours and 116 injured.

Israel is set to send a fresh truce proposal to Hamas via mediators in Qatar later today, an official has told the Reuters news agency.

A high-level delegation, headed by Mossad chief David Barnea, is set to arrive in Qatar for more talks - where they will offer a six-week ceasefire in exchange for 40 hostages.

This stage of the negotiations could take at least two weeks, the official suggested, given the difficulties that Hamas' foreign delegates would likely have in communicating with the group's leadership in Gaza.

Gazans near the al Shifa hospital are being urged to flee to the coast of southern Gaza after the military launched a new raid in the area.

Lieutenant colonel Avichay Adraee, the IDF's Arabic-language spokesman, has issued a statement telling those in the region to "immediately evacuate the area" southward via the strip's coastal road.

People are being told to move to the humanitarian area in al Mawasi.

Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel will proceed with a military operation in Rafah - the last relatively safe place in southern Gaza, where 1.5 million Palestinians are said to be sheltering.

Israel's allies have piled pressure on Mr Netanyahu not to attack Rafah without a plan to protect civilians.

But speaking to his cabinet, the Israeli prime minister said: "We will operate in Rafah.

"This will take several weeks, and it will happen."

He did not clarify if he meant the assault would last for weeks or would begin in weeks.

Mr Netanyahu later said after meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Jerusalem that Israel would not leave civilians trapped in Rafah when its forces begin their assault.

Further to reports we have been bringing you on an IDF raid on Gaza City's al Shifa hospital, the Israeli military have now released footage of gunfire from inside a number of buildings in the medical complex.

They have said troops "detected shots fired at them from several buildings in the hospital", "exchanged fire with them" and "hit several terrorists".

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said a fire broke out at the entrance of the complex, near to where a group of displaced women and children were seeking shelter at the hospital.

It said communication had been cut off, with people trapped inside the surgery and emergency units of one of the buildings.

"There are casualties, including deaths and injuries, and it's impossible to rescue anyone due to the intensity of the fire and targeting of anyone approaching the windows," the ministry said, accusing Israeli forces of "another crime against health institutions".

It said 30,000 displaced and wounded people and medical teams were under siege at the hospital, adding: "Everyone who tries to move is targeted by sniper bullets and quadcopters."

A statement from the Israeli military said the operation was based on intelligence which indicated the hospital was being used by senior Hamas leaders.

The hospital in Gaza City is one of the few remaining health facilities left in the besieged enclave.
