The Thailand Polo Association commemorates its 20th anniversary

The Thailand Polo Association (TPA) celebrates its remarkable success through an exhibition narrating the association's two-decade journey on its 20th anniversary. This event is dedicated to perpetuating the vision of Mr. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the association's founder, who aspired to elevate Thailand's polo to international standards. Accompanying this commemoration, Mr. Kanoksakdi Bhinsaeng, the President of the Thailand Polo Association, and accomplished Thai national polo athletes, including Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha, Ploy Bhinsaeng, and Chonnarlite Thomongkhon, participate in insightful discussions on stage at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel on Soi Rangnam. Mr. Kanoksakdi Bhinsaeng, the President of the Thailand Polo Association, discloses that over the past 20 years, the association has been promoting Thai polo on the global stage and has hosted prominent international tournaments and major polo events, significantly contributing to the heightened recognition of Thai polo on a broader scale. Presently, there are many Thais and expats with an interest in polo. Athletes under the association follow structured training schedules with coaches providing guidance. This encompasses the planning of tournaments, both domestic and international. In the past, the association has sent athletes, including Mr. Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and Mr. Apichet Srivaddhanaprabha, to participate in tournaments in the UK, renowned as one of the world’s leading polo hubs. Additionally, the association also intends to organise a youth camp for young individuals keen on polo. The association's current objective is to ardently advocate for the inclusion of polo in the 33rd SEA Games in 2025, with Thailand as the host country. The association is thoroughly prepared in all aspects, encompassing tournament venues, horses, personnel, and international-standard facilities. Presently, the association is in the process of seeking approval from the National Olympic Committee of Thailand, with the expectation of receiving the result shortly. The ultimate aspiration is to secure a gold medal for Thailand. Historically, the Thai polo team secured silver and bronze medals in 2017 and 2007, respectively. Mr. Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, a Thai national polo athlete, states that over the past 20 years, the association has continuously enhanced the popularity of polo. On behalf of the Thai national polo team, it is my pride to have contributed to its success and to continue supporting this sport to increase its recognition in Thailand and on the global stage through participation in various tournaments. In preparation for the 2024 tournament organised by the Thailand Polo Association, a total of four tournaments are scheduled. The first event is the All Asia Cup, taking place from 4th – 10th February. This year, teams from five countries, including Brunei, China, the Philippines, Mongolia, and Thailand, will participate, with Thailand set to compete in this tournament as well. Anticipation is high for such competitive tournament, as all teams are believed to have undergone intensive training. Ploy Bhinsaeng, a Thai national polo athlete, conveys that her initiation into the world of polo commenced with an introduction by Mr. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Upon trying the sport, she swiftly developed an enduring affinity for it. Polo demands a fusion of skills, encompassing strategic planning and teamwork.

Dining with a Star

The South of Thailand now embraces the starry standard, and PRU stands as the sole Michelin Star-awarded restaurant in the region. It's an outstanding creation helmed by Executive Chef Jimmy Ophorst, designed under the concept of 'sustainable fine dining' and delivering an 'Inside-Out' experience that elevates the dining journey. This concept bridges the space between the kitchen and dining areas, formerly separate. Beyond the harmonious dining, the open kitchen fosters a bond between the guests and the diners, who can delight in the sights and sounds of food preparation and the culinary process. Ophorst explained, “We’ve been inspired by the kappo style of service, where the formality between the chef and his guests is eliminated as the chef ‘cuts and cooks’ the freshest seasonal ingredients based on interactions with each guest. We adopted this philosophy in the new restaurant design to create the Inside-Out experience and bring our guests closer to the best ingredients Thailand has to offer.” Located within the exclusive confines of the award-winning Trisara resort, the restaurant offers ten seats at the kitchen counter, granting guests an up-close view of Ophorst and his team in action. Chasing Light

Festive times gather lights from around the world to paint the world with magical hues, and Macao is one of the destinations that shines out the light of joy beyond time. This year, the famous “Light up Macao 2023” organized by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) in collaboration with six integrated resort enterprises, will showcase its wondrous amusement from now until 25th February 2024 under the theme “Dazzling Wonderland.” The lighting plans include a variety of romantic and colorful light installations, interactive installations, and mapping shows on Macao Peninsula, Taipa, and Coloane. The enchanting light arts will illuminate the city, creating a unique wonderland at night that will not only be the talk of the town but also a world wonder. Expect the scene of Macao lighting up not just for the festive season, but the Dazzling lighting event will span major festivities such as the Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR, Winter Solstice, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Renri, and the Chinese Lantern Festival in 34 locations across seven districts: Central District, Praia do Manduco District, Nam Van District, Zona Nova de Aterros do Porto Exterior (NAPE), Northern District, Taipa, and Coloane. There will be 36 light installations, 20 interactive installations, and 3 mapping show venues. The illuminations and interactive installations will light up different corners of communities at different stages. The highlights of the event include the Projection mapping shows at the front square of the Macao Science Center, Largo dos Bombeiros in Taipa (the façade of Cozinha Pinocchio Taipa), and the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier in Coloane. The projection teams are from Macao and the two UNESCO Creative Cities of Design – Seoul, Korea, and Wuhan, China. Their participation manifests the glamour of creative cities’ collaboration across fields in Macao and contributes to the concerted development of “tourism + culture and creativity.” In addition to making memories last longer and expand wider, visitors are invited to take photos on-site to share with the hashtags #lightupmacao2023 or #illuminateinmacau2023 on social media or obtain postcards and collect stamps at the information stations in various districts. Each stamp is themed after the major installation of each corresponding district. Upon collecting all the stamps in seven districts, a mobile phone holder as a gift can be obtained, and you can enter the grand lucky draw. Gifts will be available while stocks last. 38 Inspiring Travel Magazines Worthy of a Subscription

lifestyle travel magazine

Travel magazines are great resources for inspiration and information. Inciteful articles go beyond the things to do in a destination and explore why you should visit in the first place. Hotel reviews, travel gear roundups, exploration of new trends, and interviews with interesting people in the travel industry keep you entertained through dozens of glossy pages.

Some travel magazines cover the globe, offering a chance to see exotic destinations in far-off lands. Other magazines stick closer to home, covering only regions or states. And then, special interest magazines cover topics like travel gear, outdoor recreation, and unique places to visit.

But when was the last time you picked up a travel magazine?

Browse through this list of travel magazines worthy of a subscription. Read the details of the magazine’s coverage, digital vs. print editions, and their publication frequency. And keep in mind – these make excellent gifts as well.

What about city magazines?

City magazines can offer additional insight into a destination, but not always. The magazines also include local news, shopping guides for home décor, and seasonal things to do around town. I recommend checking out city magazines when you travel but don’t get a subscription unless you visit that destination several times yearly.

The Modern at the Museum of Modern Art

Chef Thomas Allan

New York City may boast plenty of world-class dining options, but snagging a reservation at MoMA, the world-class museum on 53rd Street, may just be one of the most efficient ways to literally take a bite out of the Big Apple. The Two MICHELIN Star restaurant,  The Modern , offers contemporary American cuisine across three separate venues. There’s The Terrace, a seasonal outdoor eatery that overlooks MoMA’s sculpture garden; The Bar Room, serving an a la carte menu in a suave cocktail-style lounge; and then The Modern—the creme de la creme of MoMA’s dining offerings. The refined eatery also overlooks the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and serves up a six-course seasonal tasting menu for both lunch and dinner.

Into the eyes of

'  Miquel Angel  ' Photographer

He traveled a lot and photographed the nature of many places: Svalbard, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Poland, Canada, United-States, Alaska, Argentina, Japan, Tanzania, The Falkland Islands, Spain etc. One thing leads to another, and with his images captured from his journeys he has participated in a large amount of National and International photography competitions receiving regognitions and awards in many of them: Wildlife photographer of the year NHM, Sony awards, Nature best, and much more.

Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld

2023 would have marked the 40th anniversary of Karl Lagerfeld's arrival at Chanel but also the 90th anniversary of the designer. Chanel, Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi or his eponymous brand ... Karl Lagerfeld is at the origin of a creations without equivalent in the history of fashion. Chanel is without doubt the house whose history is intrinsically linked to that of the designer of the creator who ensured the artistic direction of the collections for several decades and who was at the origin of iconic pieces. If Gabrielle Chanel has created the famous bag 2.55 bag in 1955, Karl is at the origin of several other emblematic models of the house such as the Timeless, the Boy, the Gabrielle or the Gabrielle or a reissue of the 2.55 for the 50th anniversary of the model in 2005.

LIMITED EDITIONS

Karl Lagerfeld has also left his mark on fashion history with his spectacular decors and the limited edition bags created for the occasion. A "Lait de Coco" minaudiere in the shape of a milk carton for the Shopping Center for the Fall-Winter 2015 fashion show, a red and white leather mini-bouée bag for the 2018/2019 Cruise collection "La Pausa" where Karl had imagined a huge liner under the glass roof of the Grand Palais or a Timeless "Sand By The Sea" in transparent vinyl whose double walls are filled with sand on the occasion of the "Chanel beach" of the Spring-Summer 2019 fashion show.

Two-Star Michelin Cuisine

Not only is the Palais Royal a listed site and the “most beautiful garden in Paris”, it is also home to this wonderful culinary experience in an exclu- sive setting: Palais Royal Restaurant. Hidden under the columns of the Palais-Royal, you will find a restaurant that has been awarded 2 Michelin Guide Star in 2022. It can serve up to thirty people at a time and offers a sophisticated atmosphere with contemporary and modest cuisine. The décor was designed by Christophe Tollemer with its own identity that is consistent throughout, blending the Palais Royal Restaurant into its surrounding environment. On sunny days, the terrace is transformed to offer lunch and dinner in the middle of the garden. The combination of his Greek heritage and his fundamental training in French gastronomy at the Institut Paul Bocuse give the Palais Royal Restaurant’s two Michelin-starred Chef a unique culinary identity. Former member of Joël Robuchon’s exclusive team, Philip Chronopoulos stands out due to his experience in various prestigious and exacting establishments before taking over the kitchens of the Palais Royal Restaurant in 2015. Having been awarded his first star in 2017, he received his second in 2022. In 2020, he expanded his portfolio to become Executive Chef of the Nolinski hotels in Paris and Venice, the latter being scheduled to open in 2023. This new venue will include a gourmet restaurant, “Palais Royal Restaurant Venezia”.

Lifestyle in Moscow

lifestyle travel magazine

This guide was written prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not reflective of the current situation. Travel to Russia is currently not advisable due to the area's volatile political situation.

From its Soviet-era apartment blocks to opulent churches and government buildings, Moscow is a city of contrasts. Not only is it Russia’s political and economic centre, but it also forms the country’s cultural and artistic heart.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities, eateries and a lively nightlife to enjoy. Although expats will find some of the costs involved in living in Moscow to be relatively high, there are plenty of pursuits to enjoy that won't break the bank.

Shopping in Moscow

Moscow shopping certainly caters for big spenders, but for those who don’t have the means to shop like the rich and famous, there are many bargains to be found.

There are various malls and boutiques in the city centre. Okhotny Ryad, at Manezhnaya Square, is an underground mall. Expats can find a range of goods including high-street fashions, perfumes, electronic products and sporting goods. GUM is the most well-known and iconic department store in Russia, where one can find a range of high-end brands and gourmet foods.

Local markets include the Izmailovsky market and the Cheremushinsky Rynok market. There's a claim that the exclusive Eliseev Gastronome supermarket sells the best caviar and vodka in the city.

Nightlife in Moscow

The nightlife in Moscow is extraordinary, featuring everything from bars and clubs to bowling alleys, billiards rooms and casinos. The trendiest nightlife areas are in and around Kitay-Gorod, Arbat, Khamovniki, Tverskoy and Presnensky.

With long winters, it’s no surprise that one turns to alcohol to forget about the cold. Alcoholic drinks are a normal part of social life in Moscow, particularly Russia’s famous vodka.

Eating out in Moscow

There is a variety of cuisine available in Moscow. Expats will find international flavours well represented in the city, from Eastern delights to Western eateries and fast-food joints. There are also plenty of good local restaurants offering classic Russian cuisine.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

City life: Moscow

With a resurrected trainline, a high-concept park, edgy art spaces and changing attitudes, in moscow old and new are starting to dance — and it's a fascinating show to watch.

lifestyle travel magazine

A wind orchestra plays in the small park beside Red Square

Inside the moodily lit Moskovsky Bar in the Four Seasons hotel, Ilya, the barman, is making me a Moscow Mule. It's a quiet evening and the ground-floor watering hole is almost empty, but Ilya is performing with a panache that suggests an audience. In goes the vodka with an arc of the arm, lifting the bottle like a ballerina in flight. The ginger beer is added with a splash. Then, like a magician unveiling an assistant who, it transpires, has not been sawn in half, he reveals the secret ingredient: kvas, the Russian version of coca cola, glugged from St Petersburg to Vladivostok in the Soviet era. The final touch has come from just as far. "The ice is from Lake Baikal, in Siberia," he tells me, producing a cube the size of a brick. As he hands me the copper mug I half expect him to say "ta-dah!"

I take the cocktail from him, noticing his tattoos as I do so. Snakes coil their way around his wrist, poking out from underneath his crisp white shirt. For a moment, they throw me, seeming to posit this cool cat of a cocktail maker in Shoreditch, Brooklyn, Kreuzberg or some other hip area of a city that has embraced the 21st century. Not in the Russian capital, where, some might argue, the 20th century is still alive and glowering.

Outside, Moscow is keeping up appearances. Two minutes walk south west, the soldiers who protect the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — the monument dedicated to Russia's dead from the Second World War — are ending the day in a choreographed march back to barracks. Above them, the wall of the Kremlin looms. Behind this stark red barrier, the lights are on in the Senate building where the Russian president has his office. There's rain on the breeze, and the city is lost in a gloom redolent of Bond films and Le Carré novels. Back in Moskovsky Bar, Ilya reaches for the apricot brandy and asks: "How about a Pavlovan Mystery?" There'll be no frosty relations tonight. At least, not in here.

Despite its old-fashioned elements, however, in Moscow old and new are starting to dance — and it's fascinating to watch the show. On a Saturday morning I glimpse their faltering steps, their unsure foxtrot. It's 22 April, Lenin's birthday and a fortuitous time to be in Red Square. A crowd of well-wishers has congregated at the revolutionary icon's tomb to mark the anniversary. The red flags of the Russian Communist Party are waved in the misty air. Three elderly gentlemen, stooped and frail, are assisted by a son or daughter towards the tomb. Adjacent on the slippery cobbles, millennial Moscow looks on in bemusement and then passes by. There are selfies to be taken, smartphone conversations to be had and trainers to be bought in GUM, a department store that faces the mausoleum. Mirroring the trio of septuagenarian soldiers saluting their hero, metres away three teenage girls skip through the shop's giant entrance, arms linked, giggling in unison.

But it's too simplistic to say that Russia in 2017 is witnessing a schism between yesterday and tomorrow. Moscow is being pulled slowly and subtly in all manner of directions — by financial changes; by a glacial infrastructure overhaul; by cultural undercurrents; by the motion of youth and social media. Each tugs at the moorings of tradition, politics and ingrained attitudes. The process isn't tearing the city apart, but it's certainly stretching the stitches.

Some of the signs are obvious. Moya Ulitsa ('My Street') is an ambitious, overdue programme that began in 2014 to remove the city's electrical cables from overhead pylons and bury them beneath the pavement. In a metropolis of 13 million residents, it has only added to the traffic chaos — jams are constant. Some of the gridlock has been eased by the resurrection of the Moscow Central Circle, a 34-mile ring railway line around the centre. It was initially constructed in 1908, closed to passengers in 1934, and reconfigured as a fast commuter service last September. Travellers can ride it to Delovoy Tsentr station and the Moscow City business district, an image of 'new Russia', where buildings like the 1,227ft-tall Federation Tower scratch at the heavens.

A mile south west of the Kremlin, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour encapsulates Russia waltzing between old and new. It was originally built between 1839 and 1883 in thanks for Russia's deliverance from Napoleon, but was obliterated by dynamite on Stalin's orders in 1931, in the epoch of state atheism. Its replacement was built between 1990 and 2000 under the more benevolent eyes of Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, a looming giant of white walls and gold domes that admires its reflection in the River Moskva.

And yet, though a child in years, the cathedral belongs to a Russia of unflinching centuries. It was here, on 21 February 2012, that the all-female rock band Pussy Riot played a guerilla gig, an act of political defiance aimed at Vladimir Putin that would see three of its members tried on charges of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, and jailed for nearly two years in the harshest case. Watch the YouTube video of the incident and it appears utterly innocuous, but standing in the same vast space on a Saturday lunchtime, I'm suddenly not surprised that it provoked such a severe response. This cathedral represents the Russia of fervent Orthodox faith and extreme devotion. Elaborate mosaics and frescoes adorn the walls. The aroma of incense floats on the air. Women in headscarves rub tirelessly at brass candle stands, quietly angered by the wax that drips from burning wicks.

It's beautiful but stifling, an improbable context for protest, and I feel the need to flee to the roof, where an observation deck offers views of a shapeshifting conurbation. Moscow City is visible in the distance, but the past is also swarthily insistent. In the distance I spy the Seven Sisters, the septet of colossal gothic skyscrapers, commissioned by Stalin between 1947 and 1953 and an inalienable part of the Moscow skyline. They are magnificent in size and scope, serving as (among other things) Moscow State University, the five-star Hotel Ukraina and its luxury sibling the Hotel Leningradskaya. But with clouds gathering behind them, they also resemble hands clawing their way up from a grave.

Going underground The sense of a Russia braced against dissent is amplified by a ride south-west on the tube. The Moscow metro is a masterpiece, surely the planet's most spectacular subterranean transit system, but it pledges visual allegiance to the Soviet straitjacket. Park Kultury station, on Line 1, is a Stalinist celebration of Russian prowess, the concourse between its platforms peppered with marble statues of godlike youths, carved between 1931 and 1935: gorgeous boys reading literature, aspiring actors performing, athletic girls triumphing at tennis. It was carved out between 1931 and 1935, and does not seem too concerned that the world has moved on.

But a defiant flame flickers above ground. At first glance, Gorky Park — Moscow's prime green enclave — would seem to toe the party line as well, named after Russian literary giant and Stalin's favourite author Maxim Gorky, and featuring an enormous seven-archway entrance that booms with Soviet grandeur. The year 1955 is imprinted on its facade next to Lenin's face.

Yet inside, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is a clever question mark, probing at the fabric of the society around it. Its moniker is a red herring, referring to the former bus depot in which it was originally housed. It now occupies the shell of the Vremena Goda ('seasons of the year') restaurant, the park's culinary focal point in the Soviet decades. A mosaic of a female autumn clad in orange still adorns the main hall. The whole gallery, in fact, might be an act of misdirection, showcasing art that could be considered critical of the status quo, yet which wraps its barbs in ambiguity. 'Numbers', a 2015 work by the 28-year-old Chechen artist Aslan Gaisumov examines the destruction of his home city of Grozny by Russian forces in 1999. It reconstructs a street via the silent device of fixing salvaged house numbers — one to 99 — to a board. The reasons for the gaps' placement, in a pattern that approximates a mouth of broken teeth, are left to your interpretation. Similarly, photos by Anastasia Bogomolova capture the bleak mundanity of life in the city of Bakal (1,000 miles east of Moscow), without explicitly stating that it was born out of slavery, the site of one of Stalin's Gulags from 1941 to 1943.

Russia's left field is also identifiable two miles east of the Kremlin at Winzavod, another contemporary art hub cocooned in a onetime brewery and wine factory. Travelling to find it feels like a journey beneath the city's skin. Line 5 of the metro goes both above and below ground, surfacing next to Kurskaya railway station, from which drab armies of carriages trundle off in search of Moscow's southern suburbs. Further on, it passes through narrow roads lined with warehouses and splattered with graffiti. The gallery is entirely at home in this post-industrial realm. Since 2007, its brick outhouses have displayed the work of many of the country's brightest young visionaries and will continue to do so this summer via its Farewell to Eternal Youth exhibition. Video artist Evgeny Granilschikov will take centre stage until 16 July, and sculptor Irina Korina will come into focus for two months from 15 August. Both will enjoy audiences larger than you might expect of so scuffed a location. Hidden in the corner of the compound, diner-drinkery Kraftwerk is testament to Winzavod's popularity. A chalkboard behind the bar lists 29 beers, with titles as evocative as Red Sonya and Fucking Perfect. A DJ booth promises loud, late nights. I ask the waitress dashing between tables what time it closes. "We're open until our last customer leaves," she says with a shrug that suggests she is used to lengthy shifts.

A fragment of a less introverted, more expressive Russia? Maybe. And maybe Zaryadye Park, Moscow's current big creative project, is part of the same thing. Here is a flight of fantasy — a green lung. Due for completion in 2018, the space will incorporate everything from ecological zones that represent the flora of the Russian landscape to an orchestral concert hall and a half-bridge made from glass that will jut partially out over the Moskva River. That this will be the first new park in Moscow in 50 years is remarkable. That it's being crafted to the blueprint of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the New York design team who created Manhattan's iconic High Line walkway, is even more so. That this place of public promenade will sit directly next door to the Kremlin, on the footprint of the demolished Rossiya Hotel, the 3,000-room kraken that became an emblem of squat Soviet sixties architecture, seems almost impossible to conceive.

"Part of the idea is to open up the city for pedestrians," Timur Bashkaev, one of the architects responsible for the interiors of some of Zaryadye's futuristic buildings, tells me as we examine a scale model of the site at his office in the shadow of Christ the Saviour. "People will walk out of Red Square and into the park. It will alter the centre."

Later that day I take a stroll to inspect it, peering over wooden barricades to spy on the work in progress. All around, 20-something Muscovites are scurrying into the dusk, aiming for the shops of the Okhotny Ryad mall, a retail temple wedded to American capitalism with such enthusiasm that it offers Dunkin' Donuts. But around the corner, guards are still statuesque at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Mother Russia watching her children, uncertain where the future will carry them.

Getting there & around British Airways flies direct from Heathrow to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport, which lies 26 miles south east of the city centre. Russian national carrier Aeroflot serves Heathrow and Gatwick from Sheremetyevo Airport, 18 miles north west of the Kremlin. The Moscow Metro covers the city in depth and, including the Moscow Central Circle, it incorporates 15 lines, 245 miles of track and 237 stations. Single journeys are R55 (75p). The Aeroexpress aeroexpress.ru train service links Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports to the centre (the Belorussky and Paveletsky train terminals respectively), from R420 (£5.75) one way.

When to go The Russian winter can be notoriously fierce, but Moscow can hit temperatures of 23C in July and August. September, with average temperatures of around 16C, is also an ideal month to visit.

See the Winners of the 21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest

L ike any new mom, Sharlie Brown was anticipating special moments with her baby. A technician at a Winston-Salem, North Carolina, immunogenetics lab, she decided a high-quality camera would be the best way to capture them. She had no idea where that maternal instinct would lead. Twelve years later, Brown now runs a successful photography business on the side.

She’s also the grand prize winner of Smithsonian ’s 21st Annual Photography Contest , which drew 30,728 submissions from 5,324 photographers in 128 countries around the globe. “I feel like I’m walking in my purpose,” Brown says.

The young woman featured in her winning photograph, a model named Seriana Gamble, exudes a similar confidence. “She sits on the step with a poise that says, ‘I own this space,’” says Smithsonian magazine creative director Maria Keehan, a contest judge. “She betrays no nervousness or timidity.”

Brown hopes that confidence is contagious. “As the mother of two beautiful Black girls at the impressionable ages of 13 and 8, I know the importance of them seeing themselves in the world. This photo represents not just beauty, but American beauty.”

Grand Prize

Sharlie Brown, 40

Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Photographed: May 2023

Brown was commissioned by local stylist  Erica Garrett-Ray to photograph a series celebrating women of color. The model, Seriana Gamble, strikes just the right pose, merging strength and beauty. “Her face is regal and stoic, but she has a softness about her,” Brown says. Smithsonian chief photo editor Quentin Nardi adds: “She is not smack in the middle of the frame, so your eye lingers, taking everything in. Her image only slowly reveals itself.”

American Experience

Cortney Armitage, 48

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Photographed: October 2020

Armitage and musician Fiona Silver , photographed standing defiantly among young Joshua trees, once toured “the dank bars of New York City” together—Armitage shooting for music magazines and Silver rocking the stage. Then Covid-19 gripped the globe, and all their gigs dried up. “Our careers died together,” says Armitage, who relocated to California before the outbreak. When the friends reunited in fall 2020, an impromptu photo shoot was inevitable. The resulting image represents resilience and the American spirit to persevere. “I think we were both hoping, unspoken, to capture something that said: We’re both still here.”

Azim Khan Ronnie, 36

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Photographed: April 2022

For the Muslim holy festival of Eid al-Fitr, millions of residents of Dhaka board ships on the Buriganga River to travel to their home villages inside Bangladesh for a few days with their families. The voyage can be dangerous, as ships are overcrowded, some carrying double or triple the normal load. When they reach capacity, travelers head to rooftop decks. Despite the risks, the celebratory atmosphere is hard to miss. From shore, Ronnie hoped to capture the chaotic joy, and he launched a drone equipped with a camera to photograph more than 50 vessels bursting with boisterous, colorful crowds. “You

can see people’s happiness,” he says.

Zhou Xiujian, 44

Guanghan, China

Photographed: October 2023

Zhou visited the Sanxingdui Museum , which displays finds from a nearby ancient ceremonial site, to photograph cultural relics, but throngs of visitors made it impossible to get a clean shot. Approaching this 3,000-year-old gold mask , unearthed in 2021, Zhou stepped behind the transparent display case and pressed his camera to the glass, capturing not only the mask but also the many other visitors looking at him. “The mask and faces seem to be engaged in a dialogue spanning thousands of years,” he says.

Stuart, a retired auto industry manager, was exploring the Everglades during the wet season, when the grasslands flood. He noticed a pool had formed near the side of the road, and he climbed down to the water’s edge. That’s when he spotted a baby alligator swimming by, headed toward a culvert that passed beneath the road. He quickly scrambled to a spot above the tunnel. “We both got there at the same time,” Stuart recalls, “and in a moment of fate he or she stopped for a few seconds and just floated there, as if to say, ‘OK, here is your shot.’”

Michel Kharoubi, 60

Nice, France

Photographed: August 2023

Kharoubi, a retired corporate film director, has decades of experience using images to tell stories. His art is “a passage to the imaginary from reality,” he says. For this photograph, inspired in part by Alice in Wonderland , he noticed the red rabbit behind the window of a closed hair salon, then searched for the perfect angle to capture the rabbit, the metal grate and especially the reflection of the woman walking past. Kharoubi describes the worlds he creates as escapes from the banality of our everyday lives. “The camera is only a tool,” he says. “The important thing is our view of the world.”

Rory Doyle, 40

Indianola, Mississippi

Photographed: June 2023

Photojournalist Doyle, a repeat Smithsonian photo contest winner , has been chronicling life in the Mississippi Delta region he calls home for years, often using an old Nikon DSLR or Sony A9 mirrorless camera. But when he spotted cowboy Archie Beckworth at the reopening of newly renovated Club Ebony , the historic Blues joint made famous by local legend B.B. King, he pulled out his iPhone. “You don’t need a $5,000 camera to make a beautiful portrait,” says Doyle, who was drawn to the sliver of light illuminating Beckworth’s eyes. “The light brings the viewer’s eyes toward his. In Archie’s eyes, I see hope and positivity.”

Readers' Choice

Roberto Pazzi, 50

Papua New Guinea

Travel photographer Pazzi specializes in capturing and preserving the traditions and practices of Native and Indigenous cultures that are “quickly and silently fading away,” he says. He considers himself a custodian of heritage. A former structural engineer, after retirement Pazzi relocated from Italy to Spain and joined Nomad Photo Expeditions , a company that takes clients to remote areas, like the Hela Province of Papua New Guinea, where Pazzi was welcomed to observe members of the Huli tribe, one of the largest Melanesian groups. His photo of colorfully painted tribesmen wearing wigs of their own hair shaved in their youth as a rite of passage garnered the most online votes to win this year’s Readers’ Choice award.

  • Tokyo’s Newest Neighborhood Is a $4 Billion Mini City—Here’s Everything We Know

There are lots of mixed-use mega-developments in Asia, but nowhere else will you find a new Aman, Tokyo's largest Hermès, and an ultra-high-end Japanese food market all in the same complex.

An art installation at Azabudai Hills

The most obvious answer is Janu Toyko , which opened in Azabudai Hills this month. Aman’s little sister, Janu is aimed at younger Amanjunkies with 122 rooms and suites, eight restaurants, and a massive 43,000-square-foot wellness center. (For the, let’s say, more experienced Amanjunkies, branded two- to six-bedroom Aman residences will fill the 54 to 64 floors of the JP Mori Tower).

But it’s not the only reason to add the district to your itinerary. The Azabudai Hills Market , while lacking the bewildering charm of the Tsukiji fish market, is tricked out with Japanese restaurants, chefs, and ingredients sourced from around the country. It’s also in the running to become one of Tokyo’s premiere shopping districts. Yes, it will have the largest Hermès in the city, but also the full who’s who list of French and Italian designer shops (Cartier, Bulgari, Dior, etc.). Elsewhere there’s a center for preventive medicine, more high-end restaurants, museums, and art galleries—including the new teamLab Borderless .

Hotel Janu in Azabudai Hills

And that’s the other reason Azabudai Hills differs from all of the other shopping mall-meets-hotel, hotel-meets-office tower monoliths in Tokyo: It’s a lot greener.

Woven through the area are more than 320 species of plants in vertical orchards. Cherry blossom trees have been planted to create a sense of wellbeing and harmony. There’s even a mini Central Park at the heart of the complex.

A green space in Azabudai Hills

“It’s the new cultural heart of the city and these exclusive experiences, the lush greenery, and the rich, communal atmosphere can only be felt here and makes the complex a must-see destination in Tokyo,” Yamamoto said, point out Olafur Eliasson’s aptly titled exhibit “A Harmonious Cycle of Interconnected Nows.”

Little did the artist know, but “Interconnected Nows” also means you can still get ribs and Rock-a-Roma margaritas just around the corner.

All the new restaurants at Sky Harbor Airport in 2024: Guy Fieri, empanadas and more

lifestyle travel magazine

Hungry passengers waiting at the Phoenix airport will have more dining options to choose from this year.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport opened four new restaurants in the first three months of 2024, including a new café and convenience store at the Rental Car Center.

And more restaurants are on their way. Guy Fieri’s Phoenix Kitchen + Bar and SanTan Spirit House are expected to debut later in the year .

The new and upcoming restaurants further expand on Sky Harbor’s assortment of national and local food kiosks. Last year saw the arrival of Bobby’s Burgers , a burger restaurant concept marking the debut Arizona restaurant for celebrity chef Bobby Flay; the first Arizona airport location of chicken sandwich chain Chick-fil-A ; and Italian fast-casual chain Fazoli’s , whose opening marked its return to the Valley for the first time since 2008.

A guide to Terminal 4 food: Where to eat while you wait at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

Half Moon Empanadas

Where: Terminal 3, near Gate F7.

What it offers: This Miami-based franchise specializes in fresh-baked empanadas with fillings such as beef, chicken and ham. It opened this standalone location in January; Half Moon’s items are also featured at Sip Coffee and Beer in Terminal 4.

Red Rock Burgers

Where: Terminal 4 pre-security.

What it offers: This burger restaurant serves classic hamburgers with toppings that include grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and the restaurant's house sauce. Cheese, bacon, avocado and hot peppers can be added for an extra charge. Chicken tenders sandwiches and Impossible Burgers are available as well.

What it offers: PZA’s menu features personal pizzas, sandwiches and salads. It offers five specialty pies: pepperoni, buffalo chicken, mushroom, the margherita-style Classic PZA and the Little Italy, topped with sausage, meatballs and caramelized onions. PZA also has breakfast options available during morning hours, including sandwiches, a veggie omelet and a classic scrambled egg breakfast.

Phoenix Magazine Café and Market

Where: Rental Car Center.

What it offers: This part café, part convenience store recently opened at Sky Harbor Airport’s Rental Car Center. The café side serves coffee, breakfast, sandwiches and salads. The store includes local curated gift boxes and a Visit Phoenix tourism kiosk that provides information on activities and experiences in the metro area.

Coming soon

Guy fieri’s phoenix kitchen + bar.

Where it will be: Terminal 4, Concourse 8.

What it offers: This sit-down restaurant concept from Guy Fieri , the Food Network star best known for "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives" — which visited at least 30 Arizona restaurants through the show's run and recently visited a few more — will feature American specialties like burgers, pizza, wraps, sandwiches and soups. It will be Fieri's second Valley restaurant location after Guy Fieri's DTPHX Kitchen + Bar, in the Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field in downtown Phoenix.

SanTan Spirit House

What it offers: A concept from SanTan Brewing Company, this quick service restaurant (which will also have seating) will offer "innovative" spirits, as well as sharable food items, pot pies and desserts. This will be SanTan's second Sky Harbor location; its Terminal 3 restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, beer and liquor.

Flavortown road trip spots included: 100 essential restaurants in metro Phoenix

Americans are spending more on travel and live entertainment. But their personal saving rate has taken a dip.

  • Americans are spending more on experiences, which they were largely deprived of during the pandemic.
  • Consumer spending on foreign trips and live entertainment rose by nearly 30% in 2023, WaPo reported.
  • Meanwhile, the personal saving rate in the US has declined, falling to 3.6% in February.

Insider Today

During the earliest stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans reminisced about the things that used to bring them joy. They never stopped thinking about that last big trip with their families or that last in-person concert they enjoyed with friends.

Four years later, American consumers have mostly moved on from the pandemic and are spending more on experiences than ever before.

Prioritizing experiences, however, has led to a major shift in their financial lives: The personal saving rate in the US has declined considerably.

The Washington Post recently reported on how consumers in the US have embraced a sort of YOLO — or "you only live once" — mindset. In 2023, consumer spending on foreign trips and live entertainment rose by nearly 30 percent, according to the newspaper.

Spending levels have so far continued to rise in 2024, too. In February, personal consumption expenditures increased by $145.5 billion compared to January, with $111.8 billion spent on services, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Related stories

At the same time, perhaps predictably, the US personal saving rate has declined , according to the bureau.

In February, the personal saving rate was 3.6 percent, a drop from 4.1 percent the month before. (The rate sat at 4 percent last November and 3.9 percent in December.)

Once consumers were able to spend freely on their wish list trips and attend concerts and festivals without onerous health restrictions, they started booking flights and hotel rooms and purchasing tickets to see the artists that they love.

So instead of continuing to put away money for the future, which is what many people tried to do in recent years, many consumers now want to make up for the time they lost during the pandemic.

"When you live through a crisis, it gets ingrained in your brain," University of California at Berkeley behavioral finance professor Ulrike Malmendier told The Washington Post. "The official economic reports might say everything is coming back to normal, but we are different people than we were before the pandemic."

Malmendier told the Post that after the Great Recession, many Americans overhauled their financial habits; many consumers started to save more of their money.

But the angst of Americans during the pandemic unleashed a different sort of sentiment, Malmendier said.

"The adverse effects of Covid weren't necessarily financial; people got jobs quickly and the government stepped in with support," he told the newspaper. "Instead, it's about all of the things we were starved for: human interaction, socializing, travel. People are spending money on the things they missed most."

Kate Middleton Speaks Out About Her Cancer Diagnosis

"It has been an incredibly tough couple of months," the Princess of Wales said.

kate middleton cancer diagnosis

Kate Middleton has cancer, Kensington Palace announced this afternoon.

In tandem with the announcement, the Palace released a video message from the Princess of Wales.

"I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery," she begins. "It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful."

The Princess then goes on to discuss her children, and how she had to wait to recover from her surgery before she began chemo. "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment," Kate says. "But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok. As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits."

Kate continues, sharing that her husband's support has been key throughout the entire ordeal. "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both," she says.

She ends with a plea for privacy, and offers no specifics on when she will return to public duties: "We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."

Kate ends her video with a message to all those who have been affected by cancer. "At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone," she says.
