The History of the Train :

In the late 19th century, as Shimla (or Simla, as it was known then) blossomed as the summer capital of British India, the need for better connectivity grew evident. Initiated in 1898, the rail line, after overcoming numerous engineering challenges, finally saw its inaugural run in 1903. Since then, it has been a testament to human ingenuity, overcoming the region’s rugged topography to provide an unmatched travel experience. The entire stretch spans approximately 96 kilometers, graced with 103 tunnels and more than 800 bridges and viaducts.

The UNESCO World Heritage Stamp :

The train connects Kalka, just north of Chandigarh, to Shimla in Himachal Pradesh state . The captivating train route runs for 96 kilometers (60 miles) through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800 bridges, and an incredible 900 curves.

The longest tunnel, which stretches for more than a kilometer, is near the main railway station at Barog. The most spectacular scenery occurs from Barog to Shimla. The train's speed is greatly restricted by the steep gradient that it has to climb, but this allows for plenty of fascinating sightseeing along the way. Be prepared for a five to six hour train ride though!

Tourist Train Services

Four regular tourist train services run on the Kalka Shimla railway. These are:

  • Shivalik Deluxe Express -- a premium express train with carpet, wide glass windows, cushioned seats, relaxing music, and upgraded toilets. It fits 120 passengers. Food is provided, and the train only has one stop at Barog.
  • Himalayan Queen -- a standard train, with first and second class carriages. Food isn't provided but can be purchased at the nine stations it stops at along the way. Some of the stops are for 5-10 minutes, so this train is the most suitable for those who like to get out and explore. You'll be able to take plenty of photos.
  • Rail Motor Car -- uniquely resembles a bus from the time of the Second World War. It's got a transparent roof, and fits only 14 passengers. It's also an express service, with food provided. There is one stop, at Barog. It can be difficult to get tickets though.
  • Vistadome Him Darshan Express -- a new train with seven carriages featuring glass roofs and modified windows to provide panoramic views. It is the only train that's air-conditioned.

To have the most comfortable experience, choose either the Shivalik Deluxe Express, Rail Motor Car, or Vistadome trains. Unless you travel in first class, common complains about the Himalayan Queen are overcrowding, hard bench seats, dirty toilets and nowhere to store luggage.

Shimla station in the snow

One of the great hill railway journeys of India, the narrow-gauge line to Shimla climbs 1,219m in 96km, threading through 107 tunnels and crossing 800 bridges, some of them large viaducts. The line never seems to be straight as it twists and turns around the hills, giving passengers ever better views over the Himalayan foothills and sections of line below.

Shimla was the summer capital of the British Raj from 1864 and the headquarters of the British army.

Getting there & doing it

Kalka is reached by direct train from Delhi, the overnight train known as the Kalka Mail arriving at Kalka around dawn to give good light for the connecting train to Shimla.

The Shivalik Deluxe Express is the premium service, with carpeted carriages, comfy seats, wide windows and piped music. Breakfast is served on the way up and dinner on the way down. The cheaper Himalayan Queen service has no food car.

Unless you want to photograph some of the railway’s impressive viaducts, there are few reasons to break the journey. It’s advisable to book in advance – but difficult to do using the Indian Railways website, so book via a travel agent.

When to do it

Trains depart from Kalka all year round, seven days a week, with trains timed to meet with incoming morning trains from Delhi and Kolkata.

Clear, cold winter days in October and November afford the best visibility.

Avoid the monsoon season – 4 or 5 months of heavy rains beginning in late May/June.

History of Kalka Shimla Toy Train

When India was under the influence of Britishers, Shimla (earlier called as Simla) was officially declared as the summer capital of the British Empire. During that period, there was no good connectivity to reach Shimla. Whatever route was available, it was risky, dangerous and used to consume a lot of time.

So, to provide an easy and quick access to Shimla, Britishers started the Kalka Shimla narrow-gauge train in November 1903. Lord Curzon enjoyed the first train ride and since then, the train has been running on an everyday basis, except for the maintenance breaks in between.

Mostly the stations are built nearby the bridges. In this way, the labours, who worked on the site of bridges could comfortably rest in the stations building. Most of the stations en-route were built with the line, so they also exist from last 109 years. These impressive small stations were built in Gothic style and named as Taksal, Barog, Summer Hill etc.

The longest tunnel on this route is the Barog Tunnel near Barog Station. This tunnel was named after Mr.Barog, who started the digging of this tunnel, but only to commit a mistake. He started the digging of the tunnels from the both end simultaneously to only realized that these two ends were not aligned. The British government fined him INR 1 for wasting government time and money. Barog was upset by this humiliation and shot dead himself one day during the morning walk. After the death of Barog, Chief Engineer H.S. Harrington was given the charge to dig a new tunnel. The new tunnel was constructed about 1 km away from the earlier point with the guidance of Bhalku, a local saint. The remains of the old tunnel is still there.

The world is moving at fast pace around this line, but nothing seems to impact the functioning of this legendary line. The movement of the trains on this line is still being control by Neals Token Instrument System, to keep them separate on the tracks. Block phones are also used to establish links between two stations. The tunnels are still illuminated by the plane mirrors for maintenance as they were in the old age.The water supply to the coaches are supplied by two water tanks, that are kept behind the engine in a open coach.

As the area around Shimla and Kalka is growing fast in the race of development, the romance of this extraordinary marvel of engineering still continues.

No idea of waiting list. Second class is also fine to enjoy this journey. You can see the views clearly.

And yes very helpful article….

We have booked toy train tickets for our visit to shimla in few days… Check that deluxe train and rail motor are continously running late by 2-3 hours from their scheduled time… So it will start around 7-8 AM. So should we go with passenger train which starts at 3.30 AM in the morning to view the scenic beauty?

Hi, During winter season, you can’t enjoy the scenic beauty unless it’s completely bright outside, may be upto 6.30 or 7 AM. If 3.30 train is on time, then it’s not a good idea. If delayed, then there is no harm.

Seriously no harm?

Sunrises at 7.00 AM there.. So we thought that we might see sunrise in toy train…

Ya this 3.30AM train is always on time.. But 5.30 AM train which is deluxe one.. Mostly delays by 2-3 hours… Since many days this 5.30AM train is running very late around 8.00 AM…

THEN what do you suggest? Should we catch up 3.30 AM Train or go for delayed 5.30 AM (7.30 to 8.00 AM) train?

It’s not because of the sunrise, but due to mist and fog in the winter season. If you take 3.30 AM train, you will spend most part of the trip in the dark. Choice is yours. 🙂

Thanks buddy. We booked 5.30 AM SHIVALIK DELUXE…

' src=

Although m very late in replying, but i hope it helps future readers. The shivalik deluxe is usually late because it is connected to the howrah-delhi-kalka mail for starting its journey. Until the hwh-dli-klk mail does not reach kalka, the shivalik express does not embark on its journey.

Thank you for this information. It’s very helpful.

Hola mate! I’m getting ready for my solo backpacking trip to Spiti valley in the new year. last new year I was in Bhutan. how negotiable will be the winter? I would really appreciate your travel advises if you’re still active with this blog. Thx!

Hi, The main concern during the winter is the accessibility and the availability of the transport. Spiti Valley is accessible round the year from Shimla side. But it remains covered under heavy snow. I think, you can try to explore the area during the winter. It will be a great adventure. 🙂

Good Article, Its very useful, Thanz

kalka simla express ka seat arrangement kaisa hai.

' src=

Very useful article. Just wanted to check if it’s worth taking these toy trains on the return journey from shimla to kalka (and onwards to Delhi). I see that on the shimla-kalka leg, both Shivalik express and rail motor car depart from shimla in the evening and reach Kalka late in the night. Was concerned that the scenic views may not be visible for most of the return journey.

Yes. That’s true. Take a toy train on the either side. If not possible during return journey, then take that during onward journey. In my opinion also, there is no fun on the toy train in the night. 🙂

Thanks for this! Do you have any tips for getting to Kalka from Delhi? Thank you!

There are direct trains from Kalka to Delhi. You can reserve a berth on the train upto 4 months in advance. Or, Try to reach Chandigarh from Kalka by any ordinary bus. From Chandigar, you can get plenty of AC Volvo buses. It is difficult to get a Volvo bus from Kalka.

Best Time to Visit Shimla

The hills of Shimla pack in rare natural majesty, thanks to the towering hills that remain covered with dense forests of oak, deodar, and pine which are home to a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. The typical Shimla weather conditions, which usually remain cool and pleasant for most of the time, just add more to the beauty and charm of Shimla tourism. But if you want to make the best out of your trip then you should know about the best time to visit Shimla. And although Shimla is a year-round destination, there still are seasons when the town is either full of tourists or bears a deserted look. Let’s delve into the details.

Peak season 1:

During summers, which extend from early May to mid-July, daytime Shimla temperatures hover between 22 - 27 °C. This means that the weather remains pleasant for outdoor activities during the day. And that’s why this period is considered as the best season to visit Shimla. With the most number of tourists arriving during summer months, it is considered as the peak season for tourists in Shimla. However, the nights are moderately cooler and it is recommended that  the tourists visiting Shimla during this time of the year pack light woollens.

Off season:

Being a hill station, Shimla receives huge amount of rainfall during monsoons, which start mid-July and extend till late September. Incessant rainfall leads to frequent landslides and that’s why most tourists do not travel to Shimla during this season. No surprise that this is a lean period for Shimla tourism. However, this can be a great time to witness the beauty of Shimla during Monsoon at  pocket-friendly budget rates as some of the best hotels in Shimla are available at very low prices.

Shoulder season:

After the Monsoon is over, Shimla tourism is welcomed by the spectacular shades of autumn that adorn this already beautiful hill town in Himachal. This is the time when it’s neither too crowded nor absolutely deserted. Many tourists prefer to take advantage of this short shoulder season to explore Shimla tourist places which starts by around last week of September and lasts till the end of November. Many restaurants and budget hotels in Shimla offer lucrative deals during this season which can be very inviting for budget travellers wanting to experience Shimla tourism.
