Luxury Cruises to Antarctica

Journey to one of the most fascinating travel destinations on earth on cruises to Antarctica with Celebrity. Antarctica is a land of extremes, home to towering mountains, vast glaciers, and an abundance of wildlife. Gaze at Antarctica’s dramatic landscapes in the company of expert naturalists as you glide slowly through iceberg-strewn waters in search of penguins, seals, and whales.

You'll sail to Elephant Island, where Shackleton's men waited out a brutal Antarctic winter, and learn about the continent's rich history as you explore its vast wild expanse. Cruise through the Schollaert Channel to spot penguin colonies on the ice, and witness dazzling views of Rojas Peak as you sail through Paradise Bay. Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Antarctica on a luxury cruise with Celebrity and discover a world like no other.

Antarctica Cruise Highlights

Majestic mountains.

From your ship, you’ll see some of Antarctica’s most dramatic mountain peaks, including Rojas Peak and Bryde Peak, cloaked in snow and ice. An Antarctica cruise will also take you in view of the mighty, blue-white Petzval Glacier. Get a sense of the sheer raw magnitude of these mighty natural wonders as your ship navigates through the Antarctic Sound surrounded by nature at its most extreme.

Whales and Wildlife

During an Antarctica cruise, you’ll have the chance to look out for some of the world’s most incredible marine mammals. Marvel at humpback and minke whales gliding gracefully through the water. Spot elephant seals lounging on pristine rocks, and watch waddling penguins as they go about their day, tending their young, and diving off the ice into the water to feed.

Icebergs and Bays

One of the most enthralling aspects of Antarctica is the fact that it’s virtually untouched by humans. The bays you’ll visit during your Antarctica cruise are a startling shade of blue and remarkably clear, making for some of the most beautiful unspoiled views you’ll get anywhere on the planet. Admire towering icebergs as your ship navigates slowly through the icy waters. You’ll see icebergs in mesmerizing shapes and sizes, and colors from brilliant white to sapphire blue.

He was awarded the Chevaler des Arts et des Lettres in 2009, and has translated some fourty five literary works from French into Icelandic.

Don encourages people around world to take climate action and to have fun while doing it. Since 2003, he has brought together people from scientific, environmental, business, government and community organisations to boost awareness, actions, and advocacy for stewardship of natural resources.

A Master Certified Coach who helps others succeed, he has appeared on over 30 radio and TV stations and authored many books including “How Great Decisions Get Made” and “Solve Climate Change Now: Do What You Love for a Healthy Planet”, which shares practical and fun ways to take action for a healthy climate.

Since scaling some of the world’s highest mountains, Greg has been awarded with an Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to mountaineering, along with three Australian Geographic Society Medals. He was also recently named as one of Australia’s 50 Greatest Explorers and hosted a sold out night at the Australian Museum where he spoke about his defining moments as a mountaineer.

Greg’s passion for adventure didn’t stop at mountain-climbing. In fact, it was after he set sail to Antarctica, that his love for expedition cruising was ignited. Wanting to share his incredible experiences with like-minded wanderers of the world, Greg and his wife, Margaret decided to set up their very own expedition cruise company.

In 1992, Greg and his team embarked on their first voyage to Antarctica together as this new company. The voyagers were able to adapt quickly to changing weather conditions thanks to the flexibility of being in such an intimate and dynamic-sized group, allowing them to make landings in places that many others could not.

Now, over 30 years on, the company still leads smaller groups to remote & breathtaking destinations all over the world, including the ice-laden Antarctic Peninsula and awe-inspiring Arctic.

Joing writer and journalist, Dominique Le Brun, who has devoted numerous books and articles to the maritime world in all its aspects. He himself has been sailing since his childhood, and that is why, after studying law, he turned away from the professional way that was open to him to become a skipper and yacht deliverer.

The experiences and adventures he lived through during this type of sailing inspired his first reports in the nautical press: he thus became a freelance journalist and author of cruising guides. These first publications led Dominique Le Brun to realize that beyond sailing, his true passion was for maritime culture.

From then on, enriching his reports with research work, themselves reinforced by his experience as a sailor, he conducted a systematic study of all the major themes inspired by the oceans. His essays, biographies, anthologies, stories and reports deal with the exploration of the planet sea, marine literature and painting, the trades and traditions of the sea… Today’s pressing current events direct his centers of interest towards the evolution of climates and geostrategic questions. It is therefore not surprising that he is particularly interested in the poles, to which he has already devoted five books.

Dominique Le Brun is a member of the group of Marine Writers, a permanent guest of the Académie de Marine and a Knight of the Order of Maritime Merit.

Dominique Le Brun will give several lectures including:

– Jean-Baptiste Charcot, a whole life guided by a passion for the poles.

– The first expedition to Antarctica:  Le Français .

– The second Antarctic expedition : the  Pourquoi-Pas  ?

Utah-based Nate Luebbe is a self-taught photographer and lifelong explorer of the outdoors, an avid environmentalist, conservationist, and raconteur of experiences. His passion for photography started as a way to catalog all his outdoor experiences and to live in the moment. He describes standing on a summit watching the sun fade beyond the horizon, and the stars slowly emerge from the inky blackness as an event that consumes one on a level that’s nearly indescribable. Taking those feelings and attempting to freeze them into a single still frame is an incredible challenge, something that truly motivates him to get out and experience the world.

During his childhood, Piet developed a fascination for nature and wildlife, which intensified when he got his first camera at 16. His visit to the Arctic at 17 stole his heart with its diverse wildlife, landscapes, and culture. With an ecology background, he soon realized the rapid changes and threats these places face. After working as a whale watching guide, he decided to live in the North. Inspired by the oceans’ beauty and freedom and the North’s pure wilderness, he aims to create awareness through photography and secure the future of these “untouched” places. With a camera in hand and a lot of motivation, he wants to share his passion with everyone.

Guests will have opportunities to interact throughout the voyage with Dr. Proctor, who is also a highly-respected geoscientist, educator and space artist, as she shares her experiences as the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft—and what she’s learned exploring the Polar Regions.

Guests can expect:

Unique onboard learning activities and creative exercises led by the lifelong educator. Informal evening bar talks on art, science, space, and other fascinating topics. Presentations detailing Dr. Proctor’s unique experiences exploring space and the Polar Regions. Plenty of inspirational moments as Ultramarine navigates toward the rarely-visited colony of 8,000 breeding Emperor penguins at remote Snow Hill.

Stunning green southern lights above the icebergs

Dr. Tyler Nordgren will lead our night sky viewing activity on deck when the weather and auroras are favorable, speaking about the southern sky and its auroras. Nordgren is a professor of astronomy and physics at the University of Redlands as well as a former member of the Board for the International Dark Sky Association.

Dr. Julie Rathbun will continue this trip’s theme of polar and astronomical exploration, leading discussions about how Antarctica is used as a site to study Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. A senior scientist with the Planetary Science Institute, she is part of NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft mission, which launches in October 2024 to investigate the liquid ocean beneath Europa’s icy surface.

Antarctica Group Tour Discounts

As with most things in life, buying in bulk can bring big savings, and Antarctica cruises are no different, with operators often keen to give away group travel discounts to fill cabin inventory quickly, especially closer to departure.

If you are planning to travel to Antarctica with a large group of friends, society members, colleagues, your extended family, or indeed with other families, please contact our Antarctica specialists to see if any discounts may be available for your group, as these often vary by group size and departure, and are at the discretion of the operator on a case-by-case basis.

How Much Can I Save?

Typically the largest savings are found by booking ten or more months in advance of the upcoming season, with operators often offering early booking incentives of around $1,000 – $1,500 per person (approximately 25% – 35% off), with discounts reducing the closer you get to a departure.

Occasionally you may see considerably higher markdowns on rare occasions when private charters cancel their sailings last minute.

A Note On Antarctica Last Minute Deals From Ushuaia

Insouciant travelers have been known to hang around the port of Ushuaia, Argentina, in the hope of “hitchhiking” to the Antarctic Peninsula in any old unsold cabin for a bargain price. Whilst technically possible, we would advise against this as your choices will be seriously limited and you could end up waiting around indefinitely.

Should you wish to chance your luck finding a last minute Antarctica cruise from Ushuaia , early or late season (November or March) is your best bet.

Antarctica cruise reviews

Holy crap best trip ever, quiet, please, falklands, sth georgia & antarctica peninsular, most excellent adventure, basecamp 13-25/2/2024, beyond my expectations, antarctica faq, where is antarctica.

Antarctica is the fifth largest of the seven continents. Antarctica has two large indentations which are the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea. The nearest continent is South America. The total surface of Antarctica is 14.2 Million square kilometres (about 5.5 million square miles) in summer.

What is the time zone in Antarctica?

The time zone in Antarctica is the same as the time zone in New Zealand:  GMT + 12 hours. On regular Antarctic trips we operate in the same time zone as Ushuaia, Argentina: GMT – 3 hours.

Is it dangerous to visit Antarctica?

No, the remote location, frozen landscape, and unpredictable weather can make tourism operations in Antarctica tricky, but Oceanwide Expeditions has the right experience, knowledge, and expertise to stay safe in the Antarctic.

What is the climate at Antarctica?

Antarctica is the coldest and also the windiest continent in the world. The lowest temperature on Earth was recorded in Antarctica. There are three climatic regions in Antarctica:

During the summer months temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula range between -2°C - +5 °C. In the Ross Sea it can get significantly colder with temperatures down to -20°C.

Can I do the polar plunge during my trip?

What is your protocol regarding avian flu.

We follow the protocol advised by IAATO. Before leaving for your voyage, please make sure anything you bring that may come into contact with the environment (clothes, equipment, etc.) is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. We ask that you do not sit, kneel, or lay down during our landings. Please also do not place anything on the ground. You will receive a document with further information after booking.

On this page you find all information you need to know about the avian influenza outbreaks, including biosecurity protocols.

Antarctic Weather

Witness some of Earth’s most beautiful scenery in one of Earth’s least hospitable environments. Antarctica is the coldest, highest, windiest, and driest of all Earth’s continents, though it grants our cruise passengers access to many of the most dazzling sights our planet has to offer. Gray rock peaks punch out of the wind-carved snow, passing icebergs dot the dark blue waters, and wildlife abounds that can be seen nowhere else – all serving to remind us that we are truly in another world.

Along the Antarctic coasts (where we travel on our cruises) temperatures can reach as high as 10°C (50°F) during a hot summer day, and on a regular day can plummet to barely above freezing. But just because you’re in the coldest spot on Earth doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable: Our vessels are consummately designed to make your voyage as pleasant as possible. And if you’re still unsure what clothing to pack, we’ll give you all the information you need to stay warm and dry before you join us on our exploration of the Antarctic.

Facts About Antarctica

  • Antarctica is larger than Europe
  • Because Antarctica experiences so little precipitation, it is technically a desert
  • The name “Antarctica” comes from a Greek phrase meaning “opposite to north”
  • Almost 62% of the freshwater ice on Earth exists in Antarctica. If all that ice melted today, the world’s oceans would swell by about 60 meters (197 feet)
  • The coldest temperature ever recorded was at the Antarctic research station Vostok, on July 21, 1983, when the thermometer dropped to a teeth-chattering -89.2°C (-128.6°F), cold enough to shatter steel
  • Despite the cold, the biggest documented mass of living creatures — a 10,000,000-ton school of krill — was spotted in the Antarctic
  • The first confirmed sighting of Antarctica was in 1820, though it would take almost a century — until 1911, to be exact — before a human being set foot on the continent

Travel to Antarctica

An Antarctic cruise means visiting a part of Earth that has remained largely unchanged since Aristotle first gave rise to the notion of Terra Australis, or the ”Land of the South”.

Taking one of our cruises also means acquainting yourself with the real survivalists of the Antarctic: the seals, whales, and so many penguins who call the region home.

Our Antarctica cruises offer you an experience unlike any you’ve had. Take a Zodiac cruise among the towering blue-white icebergs,  kayak alongside curious whales , introduce yourself to the inquisitive penguins,  dive into a new world  under the sea, camp beneath the polar sky , or  climb to a rugged vista  for a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. To see a list of all your many options, check out our dedicated  Antarctica cruise page .
