Made in Germany Tour

The Made In Germany Tour was the sixth concert tour by Rammstein . It is named after the band's best-of compilation album, Made In Germany 1995-2011 , which was released on 2 December 2011. The tour had 104 shows, the first being on 6 November 2011 in Bratislava (not counting the private shows for the members of the official fanclub on 27 , 29 , 31 October 2011 and 8 April 2013 in Berlin) and the last on 1 August 2013 in Wacken, Germany. Similar to the album itself, this tour often got abbreviated to MiG Tour .

Rammstein: Made In Germany Tour Brings The Full Package

  • By: FOH Staff
  • Production Profile
  • June 13, 2012

Coming on the heels of a sold-out European arena run, German hard rock band Rammstein continues its Made In Germany tour with 21 dates throughout North America. A lot of offshore bands play in the States, but this time, Rammstein brought its entire production. And this was not some partial system with locally supplied racks and stacks. For this tour, a full-tilt, 120-box L-Acoustics rig came along for the ride, assembled, tried and tested before being packed into sea containers for the three-week ocean voyage to the States.

The sound company handling all aspects of the tour was Berlin-based Black Box Music (black-box-music.com). Founded in 1992 by managing director Thilo “Baby” Goos and celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Black Box Music has grown into a large operation. It currently has 50 full-time employees, 150 freelance engineers and techs, as well as full-on staging, lighting, sound and production services, with a 500-box L-Acoustics inventory and the ability to simultaneously support up to seven major tours.

But the list of available services goes much further, says company representative Jannice Kluck. “We also now offer rehearsal and showcase halls for tours — the largest of which is 30×30 meters (98×98 feet), with a 14-meter (46-foot) ceiling and a roof that can support 75 tons,” she explains. “We have a full backstage area for the crew and the band, production offices and a restaurant for catering. We provide trucking services for tours operating anywhere in Europe, as well as on-site warehousing for equipment and staging as well as a scenic workshop, a custom case building facility and electronic servicing/repair for backline, moving lights or sound gear. We can do everything on our own, in-house.”

Black Box Music has provided services for Rammstein since 1998 and has handled the band’s sound and lights since 2009. Other well-known acts the company has worked with include Linkin Park, 50 Cent, Incubus and Kelly Rowland, as well as last year’s seven-month world tour for Sade.

The Rammstein tour sound crew, from left: techs Christian Damm and Jonas Fengler, FOH mixer Olsen Involtini, monitor engineer Alexander Becker, system tech Manuel Schröder and sound crew chief/system tech Andreas “Vadda” Vater.

Carrying full production to the States for a band like Rammstein is unusual. “We compared the cost of trucking from here in Berlin (in the north of Germany) to Munich, in the south,” says Kluck. “And that amount was half as much as sending a sea container from Hamburg, Germany to the States, which made it worthwhile. The difference wasn’t so great, so we wondered why we should rent sound in the U.S. versus taking our own equipment. We did use a U.S.-based trucking company for transport, starting from the harbor and included a lot of dry packs in with the backline and all electronic devices to protect them from moisture on the ship.”

However, this approach does have certain drawbacks. “The worst part of it is that it takes three weeks to come over via sea and three weeks back, and that represents downtime for the gear, when it can’t be used on another tour,” Kluck explains. “But the advantage is that we know every piece of our own equipment and the system is set up so well in advance during rehearsals that it’s really plug-and-play.” No coincidence here, but Rammstein’s U.S. tour began in Ft. Lauderdale (a port city) in April, and wrapped up in Houston (another port city) at the end of May. Sounds like some smart advance planning was involved there!

Black Box Music is also ready to cater to the other side of the pond. “If there are bands that want to tour in Europe and don’t want to bring production, we’re ready to help,” Kluck adds. “We’ve also found that more bands are doing rehearsals in Germany for their European tours rather than Great Britain, because their equipment doesn’t have to cross the water [English Channel] another time when they’re ready to play in Europe.” The company is also looking to the future. “We just bought another building next to us, and we’re building more studio/rehearsal multifunction spaces in there that can accommodate meetings, expositions, or rehearsals of bands, orchestras or large dance companies for musicals.”

Andreas Vater and Olsen Involtini relax at FOH before a sound check.

The man behind designing the 120-box rig for the tour is systems engineer/sound crew chief Andreas Vater, who was at the helm for the last Rammstein tour. “They are a loud band, so we have a big system,” Vater laughs, explaining that the all-L-Acoustics rig is comprised of 14 K1s, three KARAs and eight K1-Subs per side in the main system; 10 K1s and three KARAs on each side; four ARCS for front-fill; 12 V-DOSCs for delay; and 40 more subwoofers — 24 SB-28s and 16 SB-218s.

A 12-in/4-out Dolby Lake controller handles system management, Vater continues. “That goes digitally into a Riedel RockNet, sending audio over Ethernet to stage left and right, where it breaks out to analog feeding the 16 L-Acoustics LA-RAK amp racks onstage.”

Alexander Becker

A Rammstein show offers plenty of excitement, for both audience and crew, including dealing with all of the pyro, dust and water effects, and the 110dB stage volume. “It’s a loud show,” confirms monitor engineer Alexander Becker, who was pleased to upgrade to a DiGiCo SD7 console before the tour began.

“I had been working on a D5 before and we needed to buy two new consoles for the festivals in Europe, so I switched to the SD7, which is a great console,” says Becker. “I get 48 channels from the main stage and 16 channels from the ‘B’ stage, where they play three songs 30 meters out in front of the main stage. I have 36 graphics on the console, and the SD7 offers all the processing and effects I need — right in the console, so there’s no outboard except for one Distressor EL-8 I’m using on snare.”

The continual pyro, dust and water sideshow does create other complications for anyone being backstage in the middle of the fray. “I also handle all the RF for the show, which, aside from the guitars — which are Sennheiser 2000 — are Shure UHF-R vocal mics,” Becker explains. “And I have a custom-made switcher, so I can swap out vocal mics and get them clean and dry during the show.”

With all that stage volume, the monitor system is formidable. “I have 16 L-Acoustics HiQ wedges under the stage, with V-DOSC side fills and two dV-SUBs per side and 10 Sennheiser 2000 in-ears,” says Becker. “Four band members are on in-ears and the singer and one guitar player are on wedges. Mixing both in-ears and wedges doesn’t make my life any easier, but it’s all right.”

FOH mixer Olsen Involtini has a long association with Rammstein. He began mixing monitors for the band back in the 1990s, then left the road to work with them in the studio. About two and a half years ago, Involtini returned to tour with Rammstein, this time as FOH engineer.

Involtini mixes on an Avid VENUE Profile and runs a variety of Waves and McDSP plug-ins, but also a fair amount of external outboard including classics such as Lexicon PCM70 and TC Electronic M-3000 multieffects. But analog gear is also well represented in the rack. “I have a Vertigo Sound VSC-2 [discrete VCA-based] master compressor on the master bus, and I also fine tune the sound with a CharterOak PEQ1 equalizer,” says Involtini. “The CharterOak really can get rid of harshness and adds clarity. On lead vocal, I’m using an Avalon VT-737SP — this smoothes his vocal, although I still always need to keep on finger riding his vocal fader throughout the show. I also have a 4-channel SPL Transient Designer 9842 that I use on the kick drum group and the two mics used on the guitar.”

Speaking of guitar, that particular aspect is key to the Rammstein sound. “We tried a lot of things on guitar,” Involtini recalls. For lead player Richard Kruspe’s guitar, “we use two microphones — a Lawson L47 and a Neumann M149 — and we try to match his guitar sound.” But beyond taking two expensive tube studio mics on the road for guitar miking, Involtini also took it to the next step. “We have the amps and mics set in a hidden backstage ‘tent’ booth made of thick curtains which prevents picking up too much leakage from the drums and other stage sounds. And that’s the Rammstein guitar sound live.”

On the other hand, bass is run direct. “I go for a really clean bass signal, because the guitars are already dirty enough in the mix,” says Involtini.

As to whether European venues are better than those in the States, Involtini doesn’t think so. “In a lot of the hockey arenas in the States, the area beneath the seats is solid material; in Germany, many of the arenas have a lot of portable seating with large hollow areas, which makes the acoustics more difficult. The venue we played in Anaheim [Honda Center] was really bad, but most of the rest have been really good.”

But the secret to mixing a great high-energy rock show requires maintaining a delicate touch. “Keeping the power of the music while making the vocals as transparent as possible — and balancing those two worlds — is a challenge,” says Involtini. “Sometimes it’s a struggle — and it can be a lot of work to keep these two together.”

If you’re going across international borders and bringing gear with you, you’ll probably need a carnet — a detailed document that declares what you’re bringing in, how long you plan to stay and what you plan to take back with you once the tour’s over. Without a carnet, you could be required to pay import duty on arrival and export duty on your own gear for the trip back. And these days, dealing with border and customs regulations can be difficult and confusing, so it’s good practice to be prepared — well before you plan to travel.

Black Box Music is highly experienced in international touring, and Jannice Kluck handles the required paperwork for the company — and its clients. “I do the carnets,” she explains. “All our equipment is warehoused and bar-coded, so when we’re setting up for a production, I can just scan the barcodes and get an immediate update on what’s available and in stock. This creates a database with all the serial numbers, so creating a carnet is fairly simple. Then I get a list of backline from the band, add that in, and do all the carnet and customs paperwork. We’re very experienced in border support and knowing what we need for different countries. In the EU countries, this is not so difficult for us as a German company, but dealing with Russia and different Eastern European countries can be complicated, as is doing tours in North America, and knowing which ports to ship to and having all the carnets and correct paperwork. Our production assistants can handle all the requirements for any production,” she adds.

The carnet/customs process can be complicated. However, “once you know some of the secrets about what you need to do and how to get a carnet through, then it’s not so difficult,” says Kluck. “We do this several times a month, sometimes with seven tours out at the same time. Even when we go to Switzerland — which borders Germany but is not part of the EU — we’d need a carnet, just as if we were going to the U.S. As long as we’re within the EU, we don’t need carnets, but with non-EU countries like Norway, Switzerland, Croatia, Russia — a carnet is required. But for us to go somewhere like France, it’s like driving to another state in the U.S.”

Rammstein, ‘Made in Germany 1995-2011′ – Album Review

From the moment industrial metal act Rammstein emerged from Eastern Germany in 1995, they were on fire – literally -- with frontman/stuntman Till Lindemann wearing flame-retardent outfits, doused in lighter fluid and set ablaze.

Since then, Rammstein have ramped up their act tenfold and their jawdropping, pyro-filled live shows have become as much a part of their identity as their gothy, distortion-saturated melodic electro-metal. Yet, as their newly released first compilation ‘Made in Germany 1995 - 2011’ proves, the band's songs continue to stand on their own, captivating listeners with Teutonic precision, fist-pumping aggression and dance-inducing beats, conveying messages of power and individuality even without English lyrics.

When they were first presented to North America in 1997 on their second album ‘Sehnsucht,’ Rammstein re-recorded the single ‘Du Hast’ in English as ‘You Hate,’ yet it was the German version that saturated the airwaves and made the album the first all-German platinum record in North America.

The career retrospective ‘Made in Germany 1995-2011’ is available in a variety of formats, some of which include a remix disc and DVDs. strangely, the release skips over the band’s 1995 debut ‘Herzeleid’ and begins with the synth-pop metal crunch of the 'Sehnsucht' track ‘Engel,’ which features an Ennio Morricone-esque spaghetti western keyboard line, whizzing samples and female vocals that merge with insistent beats and militant riffs.

The controversial flirtations with militarism continue on ‘Links 2 3 4,’ which opens with the sound of marching soldiers and features guitars redolent of Ministry’s ‘Just One Fix.’ The explicit 'German-isms' got the band tagged as fascists by some. However, they're actually left-wingers who prefer partying to politics and mock fascism like fellow Krauts KFMDM and other industrial rockers, including Ministry and Marilyn Manson. But while many of the former bands strive to frighten and subvert, creating music for outcasts, Rammstein invite the masses to the subversive spectacle, imbuing their swarming songs with chant-along choruses and simple melodic hooks that latch on and don't stop tugging.

‘Made in Germany’ traces the band's development from a flame-spewing ministry to a more refined, theatrical beast. Coincidence or not, as they staged more epic concerts and incorporated more elements of classical, opera and pop, their popularity grew exponentially. Ironically, even at their most commercial, Rammstein’s lyrics remained confrontational, including themes of sado-masochism, raunchy sex and cannibalism; the 2004 single ‘Mein Teil’ from the album ‘Reise, Reise’ was written about the bizarre case of Armin Meiwes, the 2001 Internet cannibal who posted an ad for a partner to be killed, cooked and consumed.

Other lyrics are equally provocative, but less cerebral, especially the part-English, part-German ‘P--sy’ (‘You’ve got a p--sy / I have a d--k / So what’s the problem / Let’s do it quick’). That dryly humorous cut from the band’s most recent disc, 2009’s ’Liebe ist für alle da,’ as well as 2005’s ‘Rosenrot’ rely predominantly on brooding basslines, serpentine keyboards and pop vocals, reserving the distorted guitars for refrains and midsections.

The only new song on the collection, ‘Mein Land,’ starts as low-fi synth-pop reminiscent of Die Krupps before erupting into a volcanic flurry of guitars and theatrical vocals. If it’s a sign of where Rammstein are headed, it’s not terribly far from where they’ve been for at least seven years, which is just fine as long as they keep frontloading their concerts with enough pyro to level small cities. If you haven't seen the amazing video for 'Mein Land' yet, you can watch it here .

The double-disc digipak of 'Made in Germany' features 16 remixes by rock, metal, electronic and pop acts, some of whom reinterpret Rammstein's songs so radically they're hardly recognizable. Faith No More morph the chunky, majestic ‘Du Riechst So Gut’ into a sweeping number devoid of guitar and fueled by orchestral strings. Jacob Hellner’s ‘Du Hast’  replaces industrial fury with electronic beats, gurgling synth and dissonant samples reminiscent of a slowed down Prodigy.

The actual metal acts who remixed songs approached them in radically different ways. Tiamat covers Rammstein’s cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Stripped,’ shaving the flesh from the song, reinventing it as a bleak, minimalistic soundscape. And while Meshuggah contort the ‘Rosenrot’ single 'Benzin' into a lunging tangle of downtuned guitars and arrhythmic beats, Devin Townsend turns ‘Rammleid’ into a campy carnival number sprinkled with a flailing guitar solo, sped-up voices, banjo and yodeling. It would surely be interesting to hear those as the soundtrack to Rammtein's post-apocalyptic stage show.

For those fans who want the complete Rammstein experience, 'Made in Germany 1995-2011' is also available in a limited edition Super Deluxe Edition that contains 2 CDs (Best of Album and Best of Remixes), as well as 3 DVDs (including the full Rammstein video catalog, all previously available "Making of" and 8 unreleased "Making of" videos) packaged in a steel box complete with a 240-page booklet. This edition is limited to 1,200 copies in the United States, but we're giving one away right here at Loudwire. Enter below for your chance to win. 'Made in Germany 1995 - 2011' is available in various formats at Amazon.com .

Brilliant Stages for Rammstein’s ‘Made in Germany’ Tour

  • By: PLSN Staff

  • February 21, 2012

HITCHIN, HERTS, UK – Rammstein’s touring set centers around an industrial theme with a Mega Fan capturing major attention. Production/lighting designer Roy Bennett worked with Peter Aquinde to create the urban set. Brilliant Stages designed and fabricated four main staging elements for the tour.

More details from Brilliant Stages ( http://www.brilliantstages.com ):

HITCHIN, HERTS, UK – Award-winning set fabrication company, Brilliant Stages has designed and fabricated four main staging elements for Rammstein’s Made In Germany 1995 – 2011 tour, the re-vamped second leg of which is currently touring Europe.

Production and lighting designer, Roy Bennett, worked closely with long-term collaborator, Peter Aquinde, to create an urban set with focal points including a 3.9m diameter industrial theme ‘Mega Fan’ comprising seven blades on a central cradle. This is driven by a geared slew drive with a top rotation speed of 15rpm.

The central hub is supported by four structural frames and the outer casing fabricated to break down into eight sections assembled with truss connections. These pieces have been welded together and transport as two pieces for logistical ease. The blades are lit by 48 integral Colorblast TRX LED fittings around the inner cladding of the main fan for which Brilliant Stages designed location points.

Four smaller 0.75m fans with individual speed control, provided by freelance electrician Lee Threlfell, are mounted at the corners of the Mega Fan’s frame assembly to blow smoke through from upstage.

Brilliant Stages manufactured the enormous construction, which measures 5.5sqm and weighs in excess of 1750kg, from aluminum. This is suspended from four Cyberhoist motors, with two additional hoists employed to hinge the structure back into a horizontal position within the grid when not in use.

For the dynamic element, Brilliant Stages worked in association with WiCreations of Belgium, which provided the hub motor, gearbox and control around which the fan is engineered.

Hans Willems of WiCreations says the two companies benefit from a long working association over many years. “The collaboration between WiCreations and Brilliant Stages works well because we operate in a similar fashion and have excellent communication. We are therefore able to work quickly which was especially valuable on this project which turned around in only three weeks. WiCreations is unique in providing both the mechanical and control elements – which need to be perfectly matched – and hold most materials in stock, so it was logical that Brilliant should work with us. Together we were able to move quickly. It is a cost effective way of working.”

Brilliant Stages fabricated the band’s signature logo cross into the drum riser door, which operated as a staggered-edged, cross-shape frame filled with cut tubes which were welded into position. These pull apart to allow entrance for band members. Located either side of the drum riser are two further 1m diameter, speed-controlled fans which Brilliant Stages remounted into the new drum riser.

The B-stage is manufactured by Brilliant Stages as a 5m by 3m platform, mounted on top of two manually operated hydraulic scissor lifts which allow it to be raised from a height of 1.2m to 3m above floor level. The platform is clad with aluminum slatted panels that mimic louvers and are inset with opal polycarbonate to allow back-lighting. Each panel is fitted with a framework to support the lighting and up-lit through Neaco Nibar top decks set into the floors.

The B-stage is linked to the main stage via a 24m long, 1.2m wide catwalk composed of decking, handrail and ornamental balustrade. The balustrades and handrail are complex custom profiled aluminum assemblies which, together with the fascia, emulate a heavy duty I-beam construction that maintains the set’s industrial theme.

The assembly includes provision for mounting LED fluorescent tube lighting beneath decking composed of more Neaco Nibar aluminum grating. The lighting is accessible through removable top grills which remain clamped to the truss during transportation. The catwalk breaks down into 3m long bays each composed of three grate panels for ease of handling.

The catwalk is flown in to a height of 3.3m above the audience’s head from a series of chain hoists and designed to attach to the standard Rental Truss supplied by Black Box Music. Brilliant Stages supplied lifting bars to raise and lower the catwalk from rigging supplied by head rigger, Martin Gehring of DART GmbH, Germany.

“I’ve been in close contact with Brilliant to design the rigging part of the catwalk and the mega fan and am also in charge of the planning and drawings from our side. It was crucial to design everything following the relevant rules and regulations, especially in Germany, to get permission from authorities to move the bridge above the audience. As a result of the good teamwork we had no problems to use all our moving elements, including the bridge, all over Europe.”

Using a combination of coffin locks and Brilliant Stages’ own hook and channel system, all set elements have been designed to be assembled quickly and easily, locking together safely with minimum complication and maximum efficiency. All elements are contained within wheeled dollies for transportation between venues and to minimize the amount of manual handling needed.

The final scenic elements were clad in aluminum before being artworked and given a distressed finish by Perry Scenic, another regular collaborator with Brilliant Stages.

“Perry Scenic was responsible for a number of facets of the set including bespoke lighting pods and enormous scenic backdrops which encompassed the stage,” says Jonathan Perry, “and added the scenic finishing, distressing and texturing to all the Brilliant Stages components. We enjoy an extremely complementary working relationship with Brilliant on every project we work on with them, which includes the last two Rammstein tours. Between our two companies we are successfully able to take the creative and technical vision of the band and turn it into reality.”

Rammstein’s European tour will be followed by an American circuit starting in April 2012.

Everyone stop your fucking winging. They picked their favourite songs, not yours. They picked the songs they thought were master pieces, not you. The remixs are to help people notice that other artists can do great things with their music (even though all, except sonne, are shit remixs). They don’t have feuer frei cause the studio version sucks dick, and they knew it. People saying ‘where’s bestraffe mich, where’s mehr, where’s laichzeit’. You think they’ll sell an album using all of their unkown songs. Grow a brain. As for live LIFAD in Madison Square Garden, the crowde was so shit they won’t release it. Amerika fucks it up again.

Wheres Mehr? Benzin? Ich Tu Dir Weh? *cries*

Oh well at least theyre playing Haifisch x

Instead of playing remixes, they should have all the other songs =)

Looks like this tour is going to be the best one yet. So many songs I wanted to see on the LIFAD tour they didn’t play. Plus the whole stage setup looks a lot nicer, with a lot less smoke than last tour.

Bought the DeLuxe ed., don’t really like the Remixes, I just love real, genuine Rammstein songs! Am going to their concert in Mtl, my 3rd time…I would love to meet them, just to say how much I enjoy their music and show and dedication to their fans. But then again, I am not the only one wishing this…Can’t wait for the show, May 1st…Ouf!

Made In Germany: Rammstein In Berlin, 11/28

made in germany tour rammstein

Without a doubt bands play better in front of a hometown crowd. Rammstein was no exception to this rule.  I was fortunate enough to see the fury of the six play in front of a rabid crowd at two sold-out shows in Berlin at the O2 World Arena this past weekend. With the release of their first-ever greatest hits album, Made In Germany , on the horizon (it’s out in the States on 12/13), and an impending U.S. tour in the Spring, the band gave a preview of the new stage show that Americans can look forward to next year.

The band, known for taking an idea and pushing it to the extreme, did just that on their “Made In Germany” tour.  As reported earlier ,  the album has six different covers, with one death mask for each band member.  Before their first show, they had a four black horse drawn carriage pull up to the venue and a “funeral” procession to commemorate a lifelike bust and placing them each on a candlelit altar. Almost as if this was putting the past to rest with their greatest hits album. And as the video shows, even the band’s merch booth had pyro!

As has been noted elsewhere , those lucky enough to have seen the band play in America in the past year can look forward to an entirely new stage show next year. At the start of the show, the band marched imperially through the crowd with torches and flags up to their center stage and continuing on to the main stage by a bridge descending from the rafters. This epic entrance kicked off two hours of a non-stop fiery set.  In the middle of their set, they crossed back over the bridge, on leashes, (“Mein Teil” style) to play several songs that they would not otherwise be able to play in America. These songs included “Mann gegen Mann” and the infamous “Buck Dish.”  If you ever wondered what Till was spewing into the crowd during Warped Tour 98’,  it was a whole lot of Jager.

The energy between the crowd and the band was far more intense than I have ever seen it at any Rammstein show.  It was a show I will never forget.
