Review Description

  What we do?

We run an equestrian centre with around 40 horses, where we provide volunteers an opportunity to further their equestrian knowledge and riding skills, experience trails from horseback, improve their show jumping and dressage and learn all aspects of stable yard management, while doing so within a wildlife environment.

We also expose the volunteers to South Africa’s wildlife, by taking them on drives in a Big 5 reserve, improving their knowledge and educating them on the various forms of conservation, which are required to run a reserve successfully.

Finally, we feel it is very important to give back to the community, something we like to call, "Paying it forward" and therefore, once a week we all volunteer at various outreach programmes in the area (Hoedspruit Paws, Halo and Nourish).

  Where we work?

African Dream Horse Safari is situated in the Lowveld of the Limpopo Province of South Africa on the outskirts of the tourist town, Hoedspruit (430km north east of Pretoria and in close proximity to the Kruger National Park).

The climate is sub-tropical with a mean summer rainfall of 475 mm and dry winters. Temperatures range between 8ºC - 26ºC in winter and 18ºC – 45ºC in summer.

The area is considered a low risk malaria area, but you should please consult your doctor in connection with malaria medication and can also visit malariahotspots.com to receive a comprehensive update on the malaria situation at the time of your visit.

  Our history

In 2008, Traci Thomson, wanting to share her two passions, Equestrian and Wildlife, saw an opportunity to create African Dream Horse Safari, a company today, which prides itself on showing all who join us a fun and exciting way to work and learn about horses and the wildlife of South Africa.

Our mission/vision

We strive to teach all who join us patience, understanding and kindness to both animals and people. We are strong believers in giving back and through this, once a week we volunteers at various outreach programmes in the area.

Our goal is to ensure that no matter who visits us, whether they are here for two weeks or three months, whether they are a competent rider or have never ridden before, walk away from us having had the time of their lives, are ambassadors for our wildlife and carry the philosophy of paying it forward, with them for the rest of their lives.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for young,18-35 year olds, who are willing and wanting to experience all that this amazing place we call home has to offer, you must be hard working, passionate, caring, kind and most of all, you must be eager to have fun.

This tour gives you a chance to follow the path of the wildebeest migration through the famous Maasai Mara. Some of my most exciting safari memories were made in the Maasai Mara, and I highly recommend it !

While the peek of the migration takes place roughly from July to October, animals are moving all year long . Riding across the savannah among the animals, with no sounds of vehicles getting in the way, is a remarkable experience.

You’ll even cross the Mara River as the wildebeest do – unless, of course, it’s in full flood!

You’ll take daily rides in the Masai Mara , picnic in idyllic spots, and spend blissful evenings listening to the sounds of Africa. Cozy up on a comfy mattress and linens in camp and wake up refreshed.

Depending on the camp, you’ll either have a private bush toilet and bucket shower, or conventional facilities.

Along with riding safaris, you’ll be treated to frequent game drives and walking safaris . Night drives are on the itinerary, too. That’s often when the action happens!

After you’ve had a chance to indulge yourself in these luxuries , you’ll move on to Arusha. The rest of your trip will be spent in comfortable mobile camps with tents, bush toilets, and open-air bucket showers.

Highlights of this safari include private guides who are experts on local flora and fauna and lakeside sundowners. You can also look forward to a stunning ride across the Seven Sisters mountain range.

All along your rides, you’ll see Africa’s spectacular wildlife, with the chance of seeing the elusive gerenuk antelope .

You’ll even spend a full day tracking elephants. There’s no better way to observe these impressive animals than from the back of a horse.

You’ll also visit the very site where John Wayne’s adventure rom-com film “Hatari” was filmed in 1962.

African Horse Safaris: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: are horse safaris safe.

A: Yes . You might wonder, what happens should you come across a predator, such as a lion, while on horseback? While this very well may happen, horses are much larger than a lion’s usual prey.

Plus, the horses you’ll be riding are very used to the types of wildlife you’ll be seeing. Spooking isn’t an issue. As well, your guides are well-trained in how to handle any situation you might come across. No worries!

Q: What is the best month for an African safari on horseback?

A: Generally, the months between June and October are ideal. This period marks the dry season, which is associated with excellent wildlife sightings. With thinner foliage and shorter grass, animals have fewer hiding spots.

Also, during the dry season water sources are limited, making animals’ movements more predictable. But I’ve gone on safaris at all different times of the year, and I’ve never been disappointed.

Q: What time of year is cheapest for safari?

A: Shoulder season can be a less expensive time to go on a safari. This is roughly from November and December, between falls between the rainy and dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is still fantastic, fewer people are around, and you could get some good deals on safaris.

Q: Is Kenya or Tanzania better for Safari?

A: While you can’t go wrong with either option, Kenya does tend to experience a larger influx of tourists. If you prefer a more “wild” safari with fewer people around, Tanzania may be a better choice for you.

Q: How far in advance should you plan a safari?

A: If you plan to travel during high season (aka. dry season, June-October) and want your choice of experiences, advanced planning is important. Try to book your safari at least 9 months to a year before you’d like to start your journey.

Q: What do you wear on a horse safari?

A: If you are going on a multi-day horse safari, gloves, jodhpurs, short chaps, and short boots are a good idea. Some of this may be provided for you, as a helmet will – be sure to check with your tour provider before you pack. Jeans are fine for a day safari.

Be prepared for cool mornings with a fleece and knit hat. Stick to neutral colours that blend into the bush, avoiding dark and bright colours that attract mosquitoes and tsetse flies.

Q: How does a horse safari impact the environment and local communities?

A: Many horse safari operators in Africa are committed to eco-friendly practices and community involvement. Horse safaris typically have a low environmental impact compared to vehicle safaris.

As well, some safari operators support local communities through employment opportunities and contributions to conservation efforts.

Q: What is the first rule of safari?

A: The most important thing to remember when on safari is to be aware. You’re in a place where the wildlife rules the landscape. If you get distracted and do something you shouldn’t, like keep food in your tent, your holiday may take a turn for the worse.

Did sub-Saharan Africa have horses?

Yes . Sub-Saharan Africa had horses, but their presence was limited by geographical and environmental factors, such as the tsetse fly, which spreads diseases harmful to horses. Horses were introduced into North Africa by ancient civilizations and gradually spread southward.

Summing It Up: Best Horseback Safaris in Africa

If you want to experience a unique form of safari in Africa, then a safari on horseback is the perfect choice. You’ll revel in the quiet of game viewing without the sound of an engine, just the sound of your horse’s hooves as you ride through the bush.

Feel a part of the wild, with the heat of the sun on your skin and the breeze in your hair. Horse riding safaris offer a truly immersive and unforgettable way to explore the beauty of Africa’s wildlife and landscapes.

Happy travels!

Horseback Safaris

Discover africa on horseback.

A horseback safari in Africa is so much more than a ride through the bush – it's a unique and all-encompassing wildlife safari experience for both novice and expert riders and for both the young and young at heart. On horseback, the African landscape embraces you wholeheartedly and offers a glimpse into the tranquil yet unrelenting world of the continent's wildlife.

What are the benefits of a horseback safari?

When imagining a safari to Africa, most travellers conjure visions of olive-green Land Rovers trundling across plains of waving grass. Or perhaps hot-air balloons that are floating silently above the massed herds of the Serengeti. But the thunder of hooves of a stallion cantering across shimmering salt pans? Unlikely.

And yet Africa is one of the world's premier destinations for horseback adventures, blending world-class guides with charming wilderness camps and, of course, the chance to spot the Big 5 from the saddle. If you love adding a bit more adventure to your holiday, a horseback safari in Africa is for you.

This difference between a typical safari and an African horse safari is simple. There's no longer the hum of an engine or predictable acceleration of a pedal to the floor. Instead, you get to blend into the bush, almost like you're one with the wildlife. And besides it being a far "greener" way to explore the wild, you're no longer a mere observer of wildlife but truly experience their circle of life.

If you're after sheer immersion in nature with the ultimate adrenaline rush, a horseback safari in Africa is the way to go.

Where can you go on a horseback safari in Africa?

Horseback safaris are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to other forms of safaris, and many would not head out into the African wilderness any other way! Here are some of our favourite places that offer horseback safaris in Africa.

Horseback safaris in South Africa

A horseback safari in South Africa is one of the best ways to experience the country. Because the landscapes vary so greatly, you’ll never get bored! Besides, it’s much more enjoyable to explore South Africa with the wind in your hair and nothing blocking  your view. Here are our favourite places for a horseback safari.

Garden Route

The 2,500-hectare  Grootbos Garden Lodge  has its own stable yard with 20 well-trained horses. Experienced horse riding instructors lead tours that cater to all experience levels. Ride through the Cape fynbos on an African horse safari and take in the mountain and sea views. You can also enjoy a three-hour horse riding beach excursion to Walker Bay Nature Reserve and meander through dune fynbos to the beach to gallop or canter by the waves.

Hog Hollow Country Lodge  also offers the best way to explore the diverse landscape of the Tsitsikamma Mountains on South Africa's  Garden Route  on horseback or in the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage. At the same time, they support rescue horses that help township children rebuild trust.

Botlierskop Game Reserve  spoils travellers for choice with their luxurious accommodation in the Garden Route. Here, travellers can enjoy an exciting horseback safari and escape to the majestic mountain valleys and beautiful fynbos for a one, two or three-hour horse ride.

Stellenbosch

The wine-making town of  Stellenbosch  offers excellent wines and spectacular views too. And at Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, you can go on a horseback adventure through the wine valley, and it's close to the town's luxurious accommodation

Franschhoek

The Vrede en Lust Estate , nestled at the foothills of the Simonsberg in South Africa's most celebrated  Franschhoek  wine valley, has more than enough to keep you busy. However, it's also great to take a horse ride along the vineyards and get a full view of the estate with Cape Winelands Riding.

Cape Town

Sleepy Hollow Horse Riding School, established in 1975, is the oldest equestrian school in the Noordhoek Valley and allows you to explore why locals are in no hurry to see the end of a typically glorious  Cape Town  day. Truly, there's no better place to go on a horseback safari in South Africa.

Beach outrides are facilitated in groups of no more than six, with guides leading hooves and humans among indigenous vegetation and fynbos, through wetland, among heaped dunes and along 8km of pristine white wild beach.

Horseback safaris in Botswana

A horseback safari in Botswana is the best way to quietly immerse yourself in the vast wilderness this country is renowned for. Plus, this will allow you to admire the many wildlife calling Botswana home from a different perspective.

Mashatu Game Reserve

Mashatu Lodge  operates within the Mashatu Game Reserve in  Botswana  and is the perfect destination for a horse safari in Africa. The terrain is great for riding, with natural ditches and logs to jump over, providing an exhilarating ride and making for the perfect horseback safari experience in Botswana. Regular game sightings include elephants, big cats, antelopes, African wild dogs, jackals, bat-eared foxes, giraffes and the occasional canter with zebras and wildebeest across the plains.

Okavango Delta and Moremi Region

Macatoo Camp  in the  Okavango Delta and Moremi Region  also allows you to explore the largest inland delta in the world from the perch of a thoroughbred Namibian Hanoverian or Kalahari-Arab crossbreed. Qualified guides will share their extensive knowledge of this wilderness, and you'll get to ride up close to the birdlife, game and nature.

Horseback safaris in Kenya

In East Africa, there's never a shortage of wildlife to see. And a horseback safari in Kenya is undoubtedly one of the best ways to experience these iconic landscapes and the diversity of big and small game.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Offbeat Safaris allow you to explore the  Maasai Mara's  iconic plains on horseback and enjoy exciting wildlife encounters. The exceptional guiding and small group numbers guarantee a highly personalised and exclusive experience amid some of the world's most famous natural beauty.

Horseback safaris in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe  is full of dramatic landscapes, endless skies and rich and varied culture. And if you want to experience this in a more immersive way, a horseback safari in Zimbabwe is the answer.

Hwange National Park

With Ride Zimbabwe, you can discover a captivating country of untamed beauty, thriving wildlife and authentic people. With expert guides and horses, this is an experience with wildlife like never before. Wander alongside the wild animals of  Hwange National Park , travel with the sun and hear the drumming of hooves meandering through the land.

Horseback safaris in Zambia

Zambia might be best known as the “Birthplace of the Walking Safari”. However, a horseback safari in Zambia should not be overlooked!

Livingstone

Chundukwa River Lodge  in  Zambia  offers short hour-and-a-half rides to half-day and multi-day bespoke rides along the Zambezi River. There's a large stable yard on-site with horses for all levels of riders in the stables.

Horseback safaris in Namibia

Never-ending desert, glittering salt pans, a shipwreck graveyard... There's just nothing like Namibia's rugged terrains. And a horseback safari in Namibia is the best way to experience it all!

Namib Desert, Damaraland, Skeleton Coast, and More

The Namibia Horse Safari Company specialises in semi-participatory safaris – where you saddle and groom your own horse – across a variety of  Namibia's  most spectacular landscapes.

Horseback safaris in Mozambique

If you dream of cantering along white-sand beaches, swimming in blue seas and enjoying the warm hospitality of island life, look no further than a horseback safari in Mozambique.

Benguerra Island

Mozambique Horse Safari is a family-run organisation with a strong sense of personal pride taken to ensure their riding experiences become treasured memories.

An amazing project with amazing staff

I work as a travel agent, bringing volunteers to DAKTARI and other projects around the world. After helping a lot of volunteers fulfill their dreams of coming to South Africa, I managed to arrange 2 weeks to spend at the project. What a wonderful time I had starting with the staff who are so friendly and polite, the animals being taken care of as if they were family and the amazing food that was prepared catering to each of the volunteers individual needs. I can only say that if you are looking for an unique and quality experience involving a well thought out educational program and the preservation of native animal species, this is the one for you.

Daktari Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage

TOUR REVIEWS

” Just got back from my favorite holiday ever hosted by African horse Safaris . From beginning to end it was made so special by the whole team - stunning scenery, great people and fantastic horses. I knew it was set to be a special holiday but never expected to enjoy the whole experience so much - we were treated so well , the most we did all week was make a coffee - everything was organised and sorted for us - food was amazing and all the staff made it so special, especially our guide Simon. The rides were so varied and it was amazing to get so close to the wildlife. Will definitely be back soon! Rachel Baldwin, Horizon Signature Safari Tour, Location

YOUR ITINERARY

** Please be aware that this is a sample itinerary and due to changes in weather and other unforeseen events it may be changed at the last minute. Any changes will always be made in your best interests.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL & INTRODUCTORY RIDE

Arriving at OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, all guests receive a warm welcome from one of Horizon’s partners, Saddlebag Shuttles. The scenic drive to Horizon Lodge in the Waterberg Reserve, will take approximately three hours. Following lunch amid the Lodge’s gardens and a luxurious afternoon tea, guests get introduced to the herd of horses on the reserve.

The introductory ride serves as a gentle initiation to the reserve, offering encounters with zebra, giraffe, and hippo. From purposeful walks to breezy canters along sandy trails, the day ends with sundowner drinks on the expansive plains.

Horizon takes great care in pairing horses with riders, considering each guest’s riding proficiency and horse preference. During the initial two nights at Horizon Lodge, you will be matched with the perfect companion for the next few days of exciting riding in the bush.

DAY 2: MORNING & AFTERNOON RIDES & HORSE SWIM

In the morning, saddle up for an invigorating ride through the heart of an expansive valley, a haven for incredible wildlife like kudu, sable, reedbuck, red hartebeest, waterbuck, and impala. The sandy tracks make for great ground to ride on, meandering through open grassland and weaving through lush woodland. Along the way, you’re likely to see the red cattle bred on the ranch, grazing alongside the wildlife. Conditions permitting, the final stretch of the ride includes exhilarating canters along the lakeside near the lodge. Brace yourself for a splashy experience – staying dry is not guaranteed! Take the opportunity to cool off with a swim on horseback.

In the afternoon, set your sights eastward as the ride follows the river, passing dams where encounters with hippos are not uncommon. The return ride will take you across the open plains, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The plains come alive with activity, herds mingling in the warm sunlight, preparing for the night ahead. It’s a magical experience as you ride alongside these wild animals, completely at ease in the presence of the horses.

DAY 3: LONG MORNING RIDE & BUFFALO SIGHTSEEING

Embark on an early adventure from Horizon Lodge to either Savannah Lodge in the far southwest or Seringa Lodge in the southeast. The ride, initially through familiar terrain, soon leads to new landscapes, transitioning from thick bush to expansive grasslands with sweeping views. The region boasts a high concentration of game, with herds of over 300 blesbuck or 80 eland commonly spotted, alongside red hartebeest, tsessebe, ostrich, zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe, sable, roan, and waterbuck. The final leg to Savannah Lodge winds along a wooded stream, often offering sightings of kudu and bushbuck.

After a relaxing time at the pool, saddle up and venture to the reserve’s southernmost areas in search of Cape buffalo, part of Africa’s famed “Big Five.” Riders must stay alert in this area known for stunning sunsets over the Waterberg escarpment — a fitting end to an unforgettable day in the African wilderness.

DAY 4: MORNING RIDE & GAME DRIVE

Embark on another extensive ride through wildlife-rich landscapes ending at Horizon Lodge. The return route differs from the outbound ride, taking you through different terrain and ecosystems. Each game species favors distinct habitats; nyala and bushbuck thrive in dense forest-like areas, while blesbuck and hartebeest prefer open plains. Waterbuck and reedbuck are commonly spotted near streams. The route offers excellent chances to encounter giraffes, always a safari highlight.

After more than five hours in the saddle, the afternoon offers a game drive in the nearby Entabeni or Welgevonden game reserves. Despite the hour or more of travel to reach these destinations, the opportunity to witness lions, elephants, and rhinos in their natural environments makes this excursion truly worthwhile.

DAY 5: BUSH BREAKFAST & CAMP DAVIDSON

Exploring a game reserve on horseback always promises surprises as you set off for a ride allowing unpredictable encounters with wildlife. This particular route delves deep into the reserve, unveiling true wilderness. After about three hours of riding, riders reach a massive wild fig tree, where a delightful bush breakfast awaits, cooked over an open fire. Following this hearty meal, th ride back to the lodge winds through a dense forest, providing shelter for shyer species.

In the afternoon, guests bid farewell to Horizon Lodge and set out for Camp Davidson, promising an exhilarating night under canvas. Although not a lengthy ride, the route is thrilling, tracing a narrow trail along the ridge’s edge. Wildlife commonly spotted in the area includes baboons, bushpigs, kudu, and klipspringer. Porcupines often visit the camp at night, and leopard tracks outside the tents are not an uncommon sight.

DAY 6: SPLASHY CANTERS, POLOCROSSE & WINETASTING

Today’s route explores the northeastern corners of the reserve, leading riders from the camp across a stream and open plain before meandering through untouched bush to the upper reaches of Sunset Lake. Explore the lake’s edge on a scenic ride, keeping an eye out for resident hippos, crocodiles, otters, fish eagles, and the elegant African jacana, known for their harmless curiosity during daylight hours. The ride offers opportunities for thrilling splashy canters. After leaving the lake, riders explore open plains, enjoying fast canters as they make their way back to the Lodge.

Post-morning adventures, guests can unwind by the pool. The afternoon brings the excitement of polocrosse, a dynamic fusion of polo and lacrosse. No prior polocrosse experience is necessary, and the game, played with horses familiar with it, guarantees both fun and a hint of friendly competition. The day concludes with a dinner featuring a wine tasting, each wine thoughtfully paired with complimentary snacks.

DAY 7: TRAIL RIDE TO SUNDOWNER SPOT

The path winds its way through the valley, hugging the eastern edge of the reserve and then ascending towards the highlands near Camp Davidson. Following game trails, riders are guided back to the lodge. Along the journey, there are opportunities for exhilarating canters in picturesque locations across the Waterberg highlands, complemented by awe-inspiring views. In the afternoon, the route includes optional cross-country jumps before reaching a breathtaking spot for sundowners with expansive views over the rolling hills. A leisurely ride back to the lodge at dusk concludes the day’s adventure, making it a memorable and fulfilling experience.

DAY 8: FINAL RIDE & TRANSFER TO AIRPORT

As it’s your last day, riders get to choose which routes they’d like to take for their final ride, usually heading out to find the herds of giraffe for one more memorable moment in the saddle. It will be the last chance to explore the stunning landscape on exceptional horses, surrounded by Africa’s extraordinary wildlife species. After a delightful lunch in the garden, it’s time for the road transfer back to Johannesburg airport.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Horizon lodge.

Every lodge room is equipped with en-suite facilities, featuring either a shower, bath, or both. Seven double rooms stand independently from the main lodge, including three suites with a scenic lake view and a small verandah. The rondavels, traditional African dwellings, are located adjacent to the lodge. Additionally, two double rooms are situated within the main lodge. The lodge offers a spacious living area, a dining room, and a large stoep (verandah) for guests to relax. Guests can indulge in three delicious meals daily, accompanied by afternoon tea before the ride. All beverages are complimentary, and special dietary requirements can be accommodated. The lodge also boasts a swimming pool alongside the lake for guests to enjoy.

CAMP DAVIDSON

Modelled after the old ‘outspan’ camps of E.A. Davidson, the great grandfather to one of the founding partners of Horizon Horseback, who traded goods from his wagon across the area in the early 1900s – Camp Davidson captures the nostalgic atmosphere of those early camps. Nestled among the sandstone ridges overlooking grassy game-filled valleys, beautiful decked canvas tents offer a luxurious stay. Each tent comes with an en-suite bathroom featuring a shower. The camp operates entirely on solar energy and includes a small swimming pool. Wifi is available at an additional cost: £43 per person for one night, £68 per person for two nights, with a minimum of two guests.

SAVANNAH LODGE

Situated on the southwestern side of the conservancy, this lodge allows more time to thoroughly explore the conservancy area. The tastefully decorated lodge features five en-suite double rooms, providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The lodge boasts a spacious living area and dining spaces both indoors and outdoors. A small pool and deck offer a picturesque view of a plain and a nearby watering hole frequented by wildlife.

THE DESTINATION

The untamed Waterberg is rich in cultural, archaeological and biological diversity. The area’s iconic beauty and bio-diversity has been awarded the status of a World Biosphere reserve by UNESCO. This is a wildlife Eden and set in the middle of its vast wilderness and the safari possibilities seem as endless as the horizon itself.

Horizon Lodge is based on a small working ranch in the depths of the Waterberg. The ranch itself and neighbouring reserves are home to giraffe, hippo, jackal, hartebeest, impala, kuda, zebra and baboon. Camp Davidson is a half days ride away and set up high in the bushveld, above the Matlapeng Valley.

HOW WE CARE FOR OUR HORSES

Our horseback adventures are hand-picked for their quality and care of their horses. Here’s how the horses are kept in tip-top shape for your safaris. Our horses are on top of the hierarchy and receive very special care:

  • Each horse has its own fitted tack. Saddles are checked regularly and all tack is cleaned after every ride
  • Horses at Horizon live out in the reserve and will often see animals such as zebra, wildebeest and antelope while out in the veldt. This gets them acquainted with the wildlife before they are taken on trail with experienced staff and seasoned trail horses
  • Horses have dedicated rest days each week and a varied routine, including schooling, lounging, jumping, mounted games and trail rides
  • Our horses live out in a herd environment, allowing them to live as naturally as possible once they have carried you home safely. Living out in huge open spaces allows the horses freedom to graze naturally, but they come in at least once a day for hard feed and to be checked over

Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.
