The Duluth Experience: Adventure in Canal Park
Home / The Duluth Experience: Adventure in Canal Park
When you think of Duluth, the word “culture” probably doesn’t come to mind. Words that come to mind might be “Northwoods”, “vacation”, “Lake Superior”, “why do people live there?”, “is it always this cold?” (it’s not, by the way). But with its expansive history, exploding brewery scene, and excellent dining – Duluth certainly has culture. Cue in The Duluth Experience. The Duluth Experience was founded in February of 2013, over the love of craft beer, wanting a way for people (residents and visitors alike) to connect with this city. I was able to sit down with Kris McNeal and talk about The Duluth Experience – where they have been and where they are headed.
Kris came on board with The Duluth Experience in March of 2014 as the company’s first official employee. Kris grew up in the outdoors. As a kid, his family had a cabin near Lutsen and he spent a lot of his time along the North Shore. As an adult, Kris has gone on numerous outdoor adventures such as biking down the West Coast from Seattle to the Mexican border and spending the summer of 2012 biking around all five Great Lakes: biking 5,521 miles in 97 days. Because of his extensive (and ridiculously impressive) outdoor experience, Kris was brought on to start their adventure program as well as redevelop the curriculum for the brewery tours. Slowly, he began running the operation side of the business and is now the chief operating officer and co-owner.
So you’re looking for adventure…
Since Duluth was named the best town in America in 2014 , The Duluth Experience has seen an increased interest in their outdoor adventure tours. With mountain biking and kayaking tours receiving the most interest. Kris explained that Duluth was recently named a “Gold Level Ride Center” by the International Mountain Bicycling Association. Duluth is one of only six cities in the world to have this title and because of this, an increased interest in mountain biking in the area is expected.
Although interest in mountain biking is expected to grow, kayaking still currently holds the greatest interest. People live in and visit Duluth largely because of Lake Superior. She’s a force of her own, and people want to get out on the big lake and experience that themselves.
This summer should be huge for kayaking with The Duluth Experience – especially on one big upcoming weekend: Tall Ships Duluth. Tall Ships weekend lets you see, go on board and explore some of the biggest ships. 2016 Tall Ships Duluth will be an extra special event as the world’s largest rubber duck will be here and the world’s largest Viking ship will be here as well.
The Duluth Experience is offering kayak tours for you to get out on the water and see the Tall Ships in a brand new way. Tours will be two or three hours long, meeting at 8 th Street Beach on Park Point. Thursday’s tour will include the “parade of ships” where you can sit in the harbor watching the ships come in.
What about the beer?
If you are in to craft beer – The Duluth Experience’s brewery tour is a must. You’ll get picked up in front of the Fitger’s Complex and start your tour of three breweries. On the tours, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at the three breweries you’re visiting – while being able to sample beers they have on tap. Dinner takes place afterwards, and is included in the cost of the tour (alcoholic beverages at dinner are not included).
I went on The Duluth Experience brewery tour for a bachelorette party. And let me just tell you, these guys are saints. Not only did they put up with a dozen overly excited ladies, but the tours and transportation was seamless.
We didn’t have to worry about driving, our sample glasses were filled, there were snacks on the bus to eat between tours, our pre-chosen meals at Lake Avenue were ready for us almost as soon as we got settled in to our table.
I would absolutely take the brewery tour again, whether for another special event or just a fun night out.
What’s up next?
The Duluth Experience currently offers specialty classes and workshops – such as hawk watching and a fall photography course. In the future, TDE would like to add in more of these specialty classes and add an expansion to their adventure tours.
With being labeled one of the best outdoor cities in America, its unpredictable weather, and having the greatest of lakes, Duluth has seen an increase in visitors from out of state and out of country. Because of this, The Duluth Experience is thinking of potentially adding guided, multi-day trips for those coming from far away looking to explore Duluth for more than a few hours.
Kris’s favorite thing to do in Canal Park? “Even after living in Duluth for 13 years, watching the ships never gets old. Especially watching from a kayak.”

Fitger’s Brewhouse
Wild Rice Burger
Photos By Marissa Saurer
Joy: When Fitger’s Brewhouse first opened back in 1995 inside the historic Fitger’s Brewery complex, there were only a few other breweries in Minnesota, and I still harbored an unfortunate affinity for broomstick skirts. My, how times have changed.
Jason: You’ve kept the broomstick, though, which is cool. Like the longtime Minneapolis brewer Town Hall, Fitger’s has had so many great beer-makers come through its operation, including Dave Hoops, who just left to start his own titular brewery in Canal Park. Start with the Fitger’s sampler: seven tasters of Fitger’s different beers, including the top-notch Starfire Pale Ale and Beaver Bay Brown.
Joy: There’s an easy-going north woods vibe inside the wood-walled dining room. There’s also a cozy side room with a small stage that’s a great local music venue during the winter.
Jason: We were seated in a room next to the main dining space, which was a bit of a bummer because it’s smaller, quieter, and lacks the character of the main room. But friendly service and terrific beer-battered onion rings more than made up for the digs.
Superior Trail IPA
Joy: Those onion rings are epic—I much prefer them to Fitger’s also-beer-battered French fries.
Jason: You are a Duluth expert, Joy, and when you ordered me to get a wild rice burger, I complied. As is often the case, you were right.
Joy: I love that burger so much that I once had a friend who worked there steal the recipe for me. Unfortunately, it’s just not the same if it doesn’t come from Fitger’s kitchen, where it’s toothsome but tender and topped with just the right amount of tomato, lettuce, cheese, mayo, and sprouts.
Jason: It was far superior to the Black N’ Bleu Burger, which arrived torched almost beyond recognition. But I love being right next to Lake Superior and enjoying local lake trout, smoked in-house, served in a wrap with wild rice, greens, and a side of house-smoked dressing.

...From 1995 to Today.
Fitger's Brewhouse Brewery and Grille opened in the Fitger's facility in 1995 after its founders returned from a ski trip inspired by the growing brewing scene of the western U.S. Combining the relaxed ambience of a mountain brewery with an uncompromising dedication to quality, the Duluth brew pub established a tradition of offering Duluth craft beer, fantastic local food (wild rice burger, anyone?) and excellent live music on Lake Superior's north shore.

As the craft beer scene in the Twin Cities has exploded over the last six years, the Northland has kept pace and boasts an attractive brewing community for any beer lover. Duluth offers taprooms that have opened in the last year, some anticipated that are yet to open, and some at breweries with histories that span more than a century. All of which can be enjoyed in front of the stunning backdrop of Lake Superior.
Whether you live in town or are planning a trip to the North Shore, all the information for your craft beer needs can be found here. This is our very first essential guide to Duluth taprooms. Cheers! And please, Duluth responsibly.
Breweries are listed in geographical order, from west to east. Not ranked.
Lake Superior Brewing Co
Ex-scientist turned master brewer Bob Dromeshauser founded a small brewery and homebrew supply shop in 1994. Today, LSB is one of the most beloved breweries in the Northland and continues to specialize in producing ales from the English and German tradition from their home brewing days. The Kayak Kölsch and Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout highlight the local favorites. Their taproom has a very literal “hidden treasure” feel to it, tucked into the corner of the actual production floor. Tours are available on a first come, first-served basis.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co. - Brewery + Taproom
Launching in 2013, it didn’t take long for the two married couples who run Bent Paddle to grow into the Northern brewing giants they now are. This beer can be found virtually everywhere but a trip to the official taproom, the Bent Tap, is well worth visiting. Tours take place every Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and Brewasana Yoga classes are offered twice a month.
Hoops Brewing Company
Former Fitger’s brew master Dave Hoops started up his own shop in Canal Park in June of 2017 and it’s no small shop. The beer hall is the second largest in the state behind only Surly’s palatial domain. The massive space still provides a comforting North woods feel with original wood columns made of Douglas fir from the Pacific Northwest and several different rooms offering intimate settings. Quality and variety will be in abundance at the destination beer. There are 30 tap lines in the taproom and Hoops has plans to use them all.
Blacklist Artisan Ales
After brewing beer since 2012, Blacklist found a perfect home for a taproom inside a storied address on Superior Street. (It’s hardly the last place on earth, one would expect to find a brewery.) The 5,700 square-foot taproom is housed in a 109-year-old brownstone building. The tap list includes their various and creative styles of Belgians with the Belgian-IPA reigning supreme as the local favorite. Happy hour is held every day at various times, including Industry Night on Sundays featuring $18 boots.
Canal Park Brewing Company
Canal Park Brewing’s motto is “Beer from a place you won’t forget” and this beautiful location and taproom brings these words to life. A year-round patio providing the scenic backdrop of Lake Superior promise to make every visit memorable. Tours are available Friday-Sunday and the $12 beer geek package nets a Canal Park pint glass and three tasting beers in addition to the tour. Yard games and a fire pit provide plenty of warmth, since it’s always colder by the lake.
Fitger's Brewhouse Brewery and Grille
With a history that dates back all the way to the 1850s, Fitger’s brewing has long been a staple in Duluth’s brewing community. Their current Brewhouse opened at their massive facility in 1995 and produces more than 2,500 barrels of 100 different varieties of brews each year. Visit with an empty stomach as well, the Brewhouse offers some of the best selections in local food (see Wild Rice Burger, yum) and offers live music five nights a week. Tours are available on Saturdays at 2:00 and 3:30 p.m.

Thirsty Pagan Brewing
Over in Superior, Wisconsin sits Thirsty Pagan Brewing and it is definitely worth hopping over state lines. Thirsty Pagan owner Steve Knauss says, "We recognize our potential in focusing on just two things, pizza and beer. Do those two things correctly, and the world will come to us," that’s a business plan the whole world should agree on. The taproom is a must-visit for any lover of sour beers, five specialty sours currently populate the tap list. Live music is offered daily.
Castle Danger Brewery
Located 30 minutes North on the fresh coast is Castle Danger Brewery in Two Harbors, MN and it is well worth the drive. Their classic Cream Ale has garnered massive popularity in Minnesota and the rest of the tap list does not disappoint. Other popular selections include the 17-7 Pale Ale and the Ode IPA. The taproom itself is a beauty and sits right on Lake Superior. Live music and food trucks are available on Fridays and tours are offered on Saturdays.

Fitger’s Historic Inn and Brewery Complex
Fitger’s Historic Inn and Brewery Complex is located in Duluth in Minnesota’s St Louis County. It was the first brewery in Duluth and was originally established in 1857. It operated for forty years until the prohibition hit and was kept in business by producing and selling other products such as soda and candy. When the prohibition ended, Fitger’s returned to brewing beer until it closed it’s doors in 1972. In 1984 the Fitger’s Complex was re-opened with a hotel, three restaurants, and a shopping center. A decade later luxury suites and new restaurants where constructed as well as the reestablishment of the Fitger’s Brewhouse . This historic complex spans 720 feet (220 m) along Lake Superior with access to Canal Park and the Lake Walk . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
