  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Entire First Season Is Now Free to Stream on YouTube

Get pumped for season 2..

Hayden Mears Avatar

Are you a Trekkie looking to get into the franchise's expanding small-screen catalogue? Fret not! The complete first season of Paramount+’s acclaimed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is now free to watch on YouTube .

It's something of an odd move, considering Trek is one of Paramount+'s biggest draws, but the timing of the YouTube drop is surely no coincedence; it's just in time to get caught up before the second season’s June 15 premiere.

Strange New Worlds chronicles the pre-Original Series adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Spock (Ethan Peck), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and the rest of the Enterprise crew. Our 10/10 review of Season 1 called the show “emotional, exciting, funny, and sometimes scary,” singling out Mount’s performance as one of its biggest draws.

Created by Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, and Jenny Lumet, Strange New Worlds is the 11th series in the franchise. For years now, Kurtzman has been building a massive Star Trek universe on the small screen, delivering offbeat concepts such as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy.

Other shows in Kurtzman’s ever-ballooning Trekverse include the recently ended Picard and the ongoing Stark Trek: Discovery (which is set to end with Season 5 sometime in 2024 ).

A third season of Strange New Worlds was announced earlier this year. The first season is also available on Blu-ray and DVD, with a 4K release scheduled to hit shelves on June 13.

Hayden Mears is an entertainment journalist who enjoys (you guessed it) entertainment. He also likes fitness boxing and writing bios in the third person.

From Picard to Lower Decks , there are a quite a few Star Trek shows on Paramount Plus at the moment, but none of them are quite as good at capturing the series’ original magic as Strange New Worlds . Thankfully for fans who might be curious about the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and his crew, the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is now free on YouTube in advance of the series’ second season — which will also include a Lower Decks crossover .

Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Star Trek the original series and tells the story of the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk was in charge. Unlike something like Star Trek: Picard , Strange New Worlds mostly stays true to the episodic adventures that helped keep the franchise fresh and fun.

While that isn’t necessarily the TV trend that’s most in-vogue, it made for a fantastic format for the series’ first season and made it feel more like the Star Trek of old, whether that’s the original series, The Next Generation , or Deep Space Nine .

Star Trek: Strange New World ’s first season is arriving on YouTube as a way for Paramount to promote it ahead of season 2’s premiere on June 15. The first season of the show will remain free and on YouTube until June 30 at midnight Pacific Time.

You can watch the entire first season of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ for free on YouTube

Paramount+ made this move ahead of the season 2 premiere..

Streaming services often upload a pilot on YouTube to lure in new subscribers, but never an entire season. Paramount+ did just that, however, throwing up the entire first season of the critically-acclaimed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on YouTube for all to see. That’s ten hours of free Star Trek goodness, for those keeping score.

It’s no coincidence that this move comes hot on the heels of season two of the sci-fi property, which premieres June 15th and promises more space-based tomfoolery and an anticipated crossover event with sibling show Star Trek: Lower Decks. The upcoming season also promises more Kirk and more Klingons, if classic franchise iconography is your bag.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel to the original series that follows the adventures of Enterprise captain Christopher Pike, his science officer Spock, a fresh-faced comms officer named Nyota Uhura and the rest of the crew. The show’s been praised for its “back to basics” formula, eschewing extensive serialization in favor of standalone episodes.

This promotion isn’t just for Trek fans, as Paramount+ also dropped full seasons of iCarly, Joe Pickett and Queen of the Universe. It goes without saying that this is a limited time promo offer, so open up those YouTube links and get binging.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 premiere just hit YouTube — and it’s free to watch

To boldly go where no credit card has gone before

(L to R) Anson Mount as Pike, extends and arm to Ethan Peck as Spock in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

If subscribing to Paramount Plus isn’t a possibility right now, but you’re still a massive Star Trek fan, then you're in luck. Paramount Plus has just added the second season premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to YouTube , letting you watch the entire episode for free.

Eagle-eyed fans may remember that the entire first season of Strange New Worlds was added to YouTube earlier this month . While that is apparently only available for a limited time, all ten episodes are still live on the Paramount Plus YouTube Channel at the time of writing. That means you can watch 11 of the 12 Strange New Worlds episodes that have been released so far, absolutely free. For the time being, anyway.

The only downside here is that the episodes are only available to watch on YouTube in the U.S. However those geographical restrictions can be circumvented by one of the best VPNs , in case you live elsewhere and can’t get access to the full Paramount Plus catalog.

The show is set in the years before Star Trek The Original Series, following the crew of the Enterprise before Kirk took over the captain’s chair. The idea behind the series was to take Star Trek back to its roots, and recapture the tone and feeling of those iconic episodes from the 1960s. That means there’s a lot less serialization, and episodes largely stand on their own.

And fan reception has largely been positive. Right now, as we sit two episodes into Strange New Worlds’ sophomore season the Rotten Tomatoes score is one of the highest of any Paramount Plus exclusive show. Reviews are still trickling in, and we still have eight more episodes to get through, but that score is still sitting at 98% — alongside an 82% audience rating.

Considering how critical Star Trek fans have been of the recent entries in the franchise, criticism that isn’t always undeserved, it’s incredibly high praise. Which shouldn’t be a huge surprise, considering Strange New Worlds only exists because fans demanded it — aided by the stellar performance of Anson Mount and Ethan Peck in the second season of Star Trek Discovery .

If you don’t believe us, then all you have to do is head over to YouTube and check Strange New Worlds out for yourself. Just remember that the rest of season 2 isn’t likely to be free to watch on YouTube anytime soon — if ever. So if you want to keep on top of the adventures of the Enterprise, you’ll need to subscribe to Paramount Plus. Prices start at $5 a month, or $10 a month if you prefer an ad-free experience.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Commander Una Chin-Riley, Ethan Peck as Lieutenant Spock, Celia Rose Gooding as Ensign Uhura, and the usual motley assortment of cast members making up the rest of the Enterprise crew.

Star Trek TV series on Paramount+

Paramount+ is the home to all things Star Trek , from expensive and expansive modern-day series Strange New Worlds and Discovery to cheap and cheesy (but still awesome) originators Star Trek and The Next Generation . Here’s the Trek universe that’s available to watch on Paramount+.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022–present)

Before James T. Kirk, the U.S.S. Enterprise captain was Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), a Starfleet officer with a refreshingly empathetic attitude and sky-high zaddy hair. Season 1 of the throwback-y SNW earned a 99% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes and is available in its entirety on YouTube (for now).

Star Trek Prodigy (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Prodigy (2021–present)

Set in 2383, five years after the events of Star Trek: Voyager , the animated Prodigy follows a group of teen aliens who stumble upon an abandoned Starfleet ship and use it to escape from their prison colony. Several O.G. Star Trek actors voice hologram versions of themselves, including Voyager ’s Kate Mulgrew.

Star Trek Lower Decks (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020–present)

Another animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks , is all about the least-recognized grunt workers on the least-important ship in Starfleet, the U.S.S. Cerritos . The fast-paced comedy is loaded with inside jokes for Trekkers but is still accessible enough for newbies. Also: A Strange New Worlds crossover is in the works.

Star Trek Picard (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

Retired Starfleet admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) gets the Next Generation band back together in 2399 to save his synthetic daughter and face a new Romulan threat, if not elder-age existential crises. The darker and slower Picard is kind of the rogue Breaking Bad of the Star Trek TV universe.

Star Trek Discovery (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–present)

Set around the same time as Strange New Worlds , prequel series Discovery kicked off the Star Trek comeback tour 12 years after the demise of Enterprise . Rather than making the lead a captain, Discovery centers on scientist Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), the adopted sister of Mr. Spock.

Star Trek Enterprise (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Enterprise (2002–2005)

The ’80s–’00s Star Trek hot streak ended unceremoniously with Enterprise , a series weighed down with middling reviews and the worst sci-fi theme song since Firefly . Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) commands Earth’s first starship 100 years before the original Star Trek ; it’s a very low-tech affair.

Star Trek Voyager (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Voyager (1995–2001)

Voyager introduced the first female Star Trek captain, Kathyrn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), as well as an equal-numbered crew of women and men—which only took 30 years. The series follows the U.S.S. Voyager , a ship lost in the outer ranges of the galaxy. Voyager also gave us the indispensible Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Star Trek Deep Space Nine (Paramount+)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999)

Deep Space Nine broke from Trek tradition by setting the action on a space station rather than a roving starship, and it’s also the first series after the death of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. DS9 is a fanbase favorite, featuring heavily-serialized episode arcs that make for great binge-watching.

Star Trek The Next Generation (Paramount+)

Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994)

The series that brought the franchise back from the dead nearly 20 years after the original, The Next Generation introduced a crew of characters that would become even more beloved than Captain Kirk’s: Picard, Riker, Worf, Data, Crusher, Troi, even that annoying Wesley. TNG is Trek ’s White Album .

Star Trek The Animated Series (Paramount+)

Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973–1974)

When reruns of the canceled Star Trek series suddenly began blowing up in syndication, NBC decided to cash in and bring it back as a (much, much cheaper) cartoon in 1973. The Animated Series featured most of the original Star Trek cast as voices, though not all Trekkers consider it part of the Trek “canon.”

Star Trek (Paramount+)

Star Trek (1966–1969)

The cardboard sets, the ramshackle alien costumes, Captain Kirk’s (William Shatner) personal mission to sleep with every green lady in the universe—the original Star Trek had it all. Paramount+ also has “Episode 00,” the 1966 pilot with a young Captain Pike, bringing everything full circle with Strange New Worlds .

The Inadvertent Callback in ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Opening Titles

T he series premiere of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which shares its name with the series, aired on May 5, 2022, and came with an unexpected nod to the past. Directed by Akiva Goldsman who also holds a position as an executive producer on the show, the nostalgic title sequence turned out to be a serendipitous addition. Goldsman’s impromptu idea to use the iconic “Star Trek” sequence captured the team’s admiration. Meyers shared:

“In the first director’s cut of the pilot that Akiva did, he just put a new version of the old ‘ Trek’ opening titles sequence in, just like a placeholder. […] And we sort of loved it.”

This trial sequence used the famed “Star Trek” theme and credits but was never intended to be the final product. Nevertheless, when the team reviewed the pilot without an official theme sequence, they found a charming connection to the franchise’s roots. The spinoff is rich with connections to its predecessor, featuring characters such as Kirk, Spock, and Uhura, who sailed the same starship decades earlier.

With the “Star Trek” universe undergoing transformations, with shows like “Picard” wrapping up and others slated to conclude soon, the continuity presented in “Strange New Worlds” title sequence gives fans a touch of the original in an era where the franchise is evolving. As “Prodigy,” “Discovery,” and other shows make their exit, and plans change for “Section 31,” it’s poignant that “Strange New Worlds” alongside “Lower Decks” will carry the torch, maintaining a tribute to the saga’s beginnings.

As the “Star Trek” universe undergoes various changes, it’s a tribute that resonates with longtime fans and symbolizes the enduring nature of the franchise. “Strange New Worlds,” sailing the same celestial path as the original “Trek,” honors the past while propelling the narrative into the future. It’s a fond reminder that sometimes the unplanned elements can create the most memorable experiences for audiences.

6 TV shows you need to watch in April

Christine Persaud

Can you believe it’s almost April? While it might feel like you were just ringing in the new year, spring is already on the horizon, which also means a whole new selection of TV shows to sink your teeth into. With dramas, thrillers, shows based on video games, and even a Star Trek franchise show’s final season, this month’s picks are delightfully diverse.

American Horror Story: Delicate Part 2 (April 3)

Star trek: discovery season 5 (april 4), fallout (april 12), welcome to wrexham season 3 (april 18), knuckles (april 26), the veil (april 30).

Half of the six TV shows you need to watch in April are shows returning with new seasons and the other half are new titles that may well become your favorites. They are available through top streaming services, so make sure to bookmark these titles, their premiere dates, and where to stream them so you don’t miss out.

The 12th season of the popular horror anthology series premiered in September 2023, but fans have waited seven months for part 2, which is finally here. As with every season, American Horror Story: Delicate features an entirely new storyline with new characters, who are played this time around by Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, and others.

As the first story to be based on a novel (Danielle Valentine’s Delicate Condition ), American Horror Story: Delicate centers around Anna (Roberts), an actress who is desperate to get pregnant, but believes someone is trying to prevent this from happening. She becomes obsessed with this idea, unsure if she’s just hallucinating or if her paranoid feelings are justified. Beneath the surface entertainment of the thrilling story is social commentary about topical issues like abortion rights, pregnancy, and gaslighting. AHS devotees might miss regular cast members like Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe, but the new cast brings a fresh take to the unique story in this season.

Stream American Horror Story: Delicate on Hulu.

Ending its run after this fifth and final season, Star Trek: Discovery flips back to a decade prior to the events in Star Trek: The Original Series . The setting begins in the 23rd Century, though the timeline jumps ahead by the end of season 2 to be well into the 32nd century, where the rest of the show takes place. Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is a science specialist-turned-captain who leads her crew aboard the starship Discovery. Fresh off reassignment when her previous actions start a war, Burnham embarks on new adventures, investigating everything from rogue AIs to mysterious signals.

As the seventh Star Trek series overall and the first since Star Trek: Enterprise  ended in 2005, Star Trek: Discovery was a huge draw for CBS All Access (since rebranded as Paramount+ ) when it premiered in 2017. The series was followed by the show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is gearing up for its third season. The upcoming movie Star Trek: Section 31 will serve as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. Although it has receivied praise for its prosthetic makeup and visual effects, Martin-Green’s gripping performance is really what fuels Star Trek: Discovery and its story.

The latest in a series of shows based on popular video game franchises, Fallout brings the role-playing game to life on the small screen. The postapocalyptic story is about a group of survivors residing in underground bunkers known as Vaults. They have escaped the resource war above ground, and are hunkering down in fear of a potential nuclear war. Lucy (Ella Purnell of Yellowjackets ) grew up in the vaults and decides to venture outside to explore the desolate wasteland above. Once there, she realizes the world outside of the fallout bunkers is more dangerous, savage, and terrifying than she ever imagined.

The Fallout TV show is developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, co-creators of the Westworld series. Nolan is also known as the creator of the sci-fi series Person of Interest and co-writer of movies like The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises , and Interstellar . The series also stars Walton Goggins ( The Righteous Gemstones ) as a mutated gunslinger called  The Ghoul, Aaron Moten as Maximus, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Kyle MacLachlan as Lucy’s father, Hank. Fallout is a must-watch for fans of the video game, especially as it’s expected to remain faithful to the original story. But even those unfamiliar with the story and game will appreciate the series as another great entry in the postapocalyptic subgenre.

Right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decided to do something totally unexpected and purchased a flailing Welsh football association club. In true Ted Lasso fashion, the pair believed they could turn the team around and inject much-needed passion (and funds) into the project. Why not chronicle their journey of trying to bring this club back to life in a docuseries? They did, and they call it Welcome to Wrexham.

Inspired by sports docuseries like Sunderland ‘Til I Die, Last Chance U , and Cheer , Welcome to Wrexham follows the new owners, but also gives fans a look behind the scenes at the players and others involved in the club, as well as the games. While Wrexham has yet to achieve its dream of making it to the Premier League, the team has been consistently moving up the ranks. Season 3 will, for the first time, premiere in spring, coinciding with the league games. The heartfelt, funny, and inspirational show has become a hit among fans who recognize the passion behind it.

Stream Welcome to Wrexham on Hulu.

If you love Sonic the Hedgehog , Knuckles should be on your list of shows to watch this month. The miniseries is based on the Sega video game series and serves as a spinoff of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies. The story takes places between the events in Sonic the Hedgehog 2  and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and centers around Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba. The super-strong echidna, who has now moved to Earth, is adjusting to his new life and setting. His primary job, however, is training Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), a dim-witted deputy sheriff, on how to be an echidna warrior, and, of course, how to help save the world.

Also featuring Cary Elwes, Stockard Channing, Scott Mescudi, Christopher Lloyd, and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles is a fun live-action movie to watch with the whole family.

Stream Knuckles on Paramount+.

Those who have been waiting anxiously for the return of The Handmaid’s Tale can check out Elisabeth Moss in The Veil in the meantime. She stars in this limited series thriller about two women traveling together from Istanbul to Paris, then London. But this isn’t a joyful road trip: one woman has a dangerous secret and the other is desperate to expose it before thousands of lives are lost.

Written by Steven Knight, best known for creating the BBC series Peaky Blinders , The Veil is all about truth, lies, and two women playing a game with stakes higher than they ever imagined. Moss, who learned a British accent for the role, also serves as a producer of the series.

It's an unusual week for movies on Netflix. Last week's major addition, Damsel, is still topping the list of the most popular movies on Netflix, but it's been joined in the top five by two unheralded thrillers: Your Lucky Day and Alone. They're also flanked by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is parked at No. 3 and still incredibly popular over four months after making its Netflix debut.

Lindsay Lohan is also starring in a new rom-com, Irish Wish, but the jury's not in on that one yet. So for now, it's not on our list of the best movies on Netflix right now. Keep checking back every Friday morning as we update your options. That way, you'll always have something new to watch for the weekend.

Oscar season may be over, but Hulu is adding two of 2023's top nominees to this month's movie lineup. Poor Things is already available to stream, and on March 22, it will be joined by the French legal thriller Anatomy of a Fall. As you can also see by looking over the new titles on Hulu, March is a very strong month for movie lovers. But for this list, we're throwing the spotlight on Christopher Nolan's Inception and Ang Lee's Life of Pi.

That's just the beginning of the best movies on Hulu right now. Keep reading for more of our picks, which feature a great lineup of Hulu originals mixed in with acclaimed films from all over the world.

The most high-profile shows are the ones you likely gravitate to from one month to the next. But the hidden gems can be really fun to find. These are the shows you can watch and tell everyone else about because they haven’t heard of them yet. They’ll thank you for the recommendation and you’ll feel like an expert who put series on their radar that might even become new favorites.

These three hidden March streaming TV shows, on platforms like Netflix and Hulu, may have otherwise flown under your radar had we not recommended them to you. Go ahead and take the credit for telling your friends, family members, and co-workers about them after you dive in and experience them for yourself. Each show offers something unique and won’t disappoint. The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (2024)
