Everything About Dandeli | History, Places to Visit, Resorts & Guide

Table of Contents

Dandeli is my hometown, and I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s a fantastic and beautiful place, filled with green trees, wild animals in the jungles, various bird species and the Kali River, that draw many tourists attractions to Dandeli . I feel very lucky to have been born and brought up in a town that has become a popular tourist destination not only in Karnataka but also in all of India.

Moreover, it’s gaining recognition overseas, with people from different countries visiting Dandeli in Karnataka .

About Dandeli

Dandeli , is nestled in the middle of the lush forests and near the Western Ghats . It stands out as one of India’s most renowned tourist destinations , surrounded by expansive greenery and home to a variety of wildlife , including over 200 bird species.

Known for its tranquility, Dandeli attracts visitors seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Situated along the banks of the Kali River in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka , Dandeli is often referred to as a forest paradise. Not only is it a haven for its jungles and wildlife, but it is also recognized as a tiger reserve forest.

Dandeli has risen to the top of many travelers’ bucket lists, drawing people from all corners of India. Tourists flock here to revel in the natural beauty, engage in bonfires amidst the forests, and stay in resorts nestled in the heart of nature.

The town has emerged as a prominent destination for river rafting and water activities in Karnataka , offering a unique experience at more affordable prices than Goa.

Prior to gaining fame for its resorts and water activities, Dandeli was known for hosting Karnataka’s largest paper factory, the West Coast Paper Mills in Bangur Nagar – Dandeli. This factory remains a significant source of employment for the local population.

History of Dandeli, Karnataka

Dandeli has a rich history of attracting settlers, with people from various states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Jammu, and Kashmir finding employment and making Dandeli their home. This diverse mix of people has earned Dandeli the nickname “Mini India.”

In this Mini India, you’ll encounter friendly, helpful, loyal, and trustworthy individuals who are more than willing to assist you during your visit. If you’re someone who loves to travel, create memories, explore jungles, witness wildlife, and experience the serenity of early mornings in nature, then Dandeli is the perfect destination for your next vacation.

The Love Story Behind Dandeli’s Name

The history of Dandeli is a captivating tale, much like classic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet or Heer and Ranjha. This town owes its name to an intriguing love story involving a man named Dandelappa.

Dandelappa, a loyal and humble servant of the Mirashi landlords, found himself in a unique love story. He fell in love with the lady of the Mirashi family, and she reciprocated his feelings by proposing marriage. However, due to his unwavering loyalty to the landlords, Dandelappa declined the proposal.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the lady falsely accused Dandelappa of inappropriate behavior to her brothers. Believing her, they tragically killed Dandelappa, separating his head and body. The present-day existence of two temples dedicated to him marks the locations where his head and body were laid to rest.

And so, the town was named ‘Dandeli,’ forever memorializing the tragic love story of Dandelappa.

How Dandeli Started to Develop:

Dandeli, a town with a current population of over 71,000 people, is a harmonious place where individuals of various religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jains, and Sikhs live together peacefully and happily. However, in the 1930s, the scenario was quite different. At that time, Dandeli’s population was only 515, and most of its residents were employed in the forestry department and government sawmill.

During this period, the inhabitants comprised diverse communities such as Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, Africans, and Muslims. The settlement was situated on the banks of the Kali river and transformed into an industrial town with the establishment of several companies.

The Indian Plywood Manufacturing Company, which is now closed, was one of the early enterprises. Subsequently, the Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory and the renowned West Coast Paper Mill, initiated by the Indian businessman S.K. Bangur Group in 1955, contributed to the town’s industrial development.

Other notable establishments included the Indian Saw Mill and various small industries. The Karnataka Power Corporation also played a significant role in constructing power-generating dams along the Kali river. This period marked the development of Old-Dandeli.\

West Coast PaperMill, Dandeli – Contribution to develop this place:

The recognition of Dandeli by people across India can be attributed to the presence of the West Coast Paper Mill. As news of employment opportunities spread, individuals from various places began migrating to Dandeli. Over the years, Dandeli earned the reputation of being the primary employment hub, especially due to the West Coast Paper Mill. With time, the mill expanded, eventually becoming the largest paper mill in Karnataka.

As more people settled in Dandeli, a ripple effect occurred. Some individuals, inspired by the town’s growth, ventured into starting their own businesses. This gradual development process has led to Dandeli emerging as the adventure capital of South India. The town’s journey from being recognized for the West Coast Paper Mill to becoming a thriving hub of employment and entrepreneurship showcases its remarkable transformation over the years.

Encompassing a sprawling expanse, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a captivating tableau of Karnataka's ecological diversity. Situated in the lap of the Western Ghats, this sanctuary manifests not only the lushness of verdant landscapes but also the enigmatic entanglements of flora and fauna coexisting in delicate balance. As a citadel of biodiversity in Karnataka, the sanctuary plays an integral role in preserving various species that find their haven within its expansive boundaries. Its role has become critical in safeguarding the intricate balance of life forms, thereby contributing to the ecological equilibrium of the region.

Strategizing Your Visit: An Overview of Safari Timings and Entry Fees

A journey into Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary necessitates some forethought. One should consider crucial factors such as the optimal times for safaris and the corresponding financial commitments.

Safari Timings: Synchronizing with Nature’s Rhythms

Operating within two primary slots, morning and evening, the safaris are calibrated to offer maximal animal sightings. Morning safaris often commence at dawn, designed for early risers keen on birdwatching or capturing the forest in its waking moments. Evening slots, conversely, allow you to experience the forest as nocturnal life awakens. For thrill-seekers, nocturnal safaris provide an unparalleled adventure.

Entry Fees and Packages: Aligning Adventure with Budget

To walk the line between exhilaration and expenditure, knowledge of various entry fees and packages proves beneficial. General entry into the sanctuary comes with a moderate cost. However, for the explorers keen on an all-inclusive experience, multiple safari packages exist, varying in terms of amenities and pricing. These bundles may feature jeep rides, trekking expeditions, and perhaps river rafting, catering to the adventurous spirit while still remaining sensitive to budgetary constraints.

Options for Jungle Safaris: Conventional Routes and Hidden Trails

Embarking upon a safari in Dandeli presents an exquisite kaleidoscope of options. Here, well-trodden paths commingle with routes less explored, each providing its unique tapestry of experiences.

Conventional Routes: Popular Paths Paved for Tourists

For first-time visitors or those who prefer a modicum of predictability, conventional safari routes offer a combination of safety and enriching experiences. These trails, abuzz with activity, take you through landscapes that are highly frequented. Often, these are areas where animals are most habituated to human presence, thereby increasing the likelihood of sightings.

Opting for such established paths provides a curated experience, with guides recounting tales of the forest and pointing out noteworthy flora and fauna. While the serendipity of unexpected wildlife encounters might be somewhat diminished, the charm of these popular routes remains unfettered. The trails are usually well-maintained, making them apt for families and those who prefer a less rugged safari experience.

Hidden Trails: Navigating Uncharted Terrain

For intrepid explorers who relish an offbeat adventure, Dandeli harbors myriad less-frequented trails. Roaming along these hidden terrains offers an aura of solitude, punctuated by the whispers of leaves and the distant calls of forest dwellers. A venture down these less-trodden paths affords you the exhilaration of unpredictability. Here, each twist and turn could lead to a furtive animal sighting or the discovery of an uncharted waterfall. Essentially, these are the realms where the forest holds its secrets close, revealing them only to those audacious enough to seek them out.

Customized Safari Experiences

Of note in Dandeli are the specialized safari options designed to satiate the unique cravings of each visitor. Do you have a particular interest in avian species? A birdwatching-centric safari could be orchestrated. Or perhaps your intrigue lies in the flora of the Western Ghats? Botany-focused expeditions are indeed viable. Essentially, these tailored experiences cater to specific interests, age groups, and even fitness levels. The concept behind these bespoke safaris revolves around molding the forest adventure to match your personal inclinations, transforming your visit into a memory imprinted with your own unique stamp.

Sights of Animals in the Western Ghats: A Wildlife Panorama

Mammalian wonders: tigers and elephants.

In the labyrinthine forest expanses of Dandeli, one finds mammals occupying a position of significant grandeur. Tigers, as elusive as they are majestic, patrol their territories with a subdued yet palpable air of authority. While spotting one might require a confluence of luck and timing, the experience is nothing short of transformative. Elephants, by contrast, present more frequent visual opportunities. These pachyderms can often be observed meandering through the forest, sometimes in herds, creating moments of awe for the onlookers. Notably, while these iconic species command much attention, the sanctuary also serves as a refuge for other mammals of lesser fame but equal fascination. Encounters with these creatures form the flesh and bone of the sanctuary's animal panorama, encapsulating the truest essence of wildlife in the Western Ghats.

Avian Richness: Feathery Residents of Dandeli

In the air, upon the treetops, and sometimes even near water bodies, one discerns an enchanting display of avian splendor. Dandeli serves as an arena where both endemic and migratory birds add notes of melody and splashes of color to the forest's tapestry. From the melodious calls of the Malabar Whistling Thrush to the striking appearance of the Indian Pitta, the sanctuary presents an avian landscape rich in diversity. Even the less ostentatious birds, such as various species of sparrows and bulbuls, contribute to the mellifluous background score of your safari. The experience is akin to walking through a living aviary, where every winged creature plays its part in the symphony of the forest.

Reptiles and Amphibians: Encounters of the Cold-Blooded Kind

The ground, the water bodies, and sometimes even the trees in Dandeli bear witness to a different kind of inhabitant—reptiles and amphibians. With scales and smooth skins, these cold-blooded beings add a layer of intriguing complexity to Dandeli’s biodiverse mosaic. From agile lizards skirting across leaf litter to resplendent snakes draped on branches, the sanctuary offers an array of herpetological encounters. More secretive are the amphibians—frogs and toads—that often require a keen eye to spot. Night safaris, in particular, make for an exciting stage to witness these elusive creatures, many of which reveal their positions through distinctive calls and croaks. In total, these encounters deepen your understanding of the sanctuary's role as a critical habitat for a wide spectrum of life forms.

Jungle Camps: Rustic Living Meets Nature

Strategically sprinkled throughout the sanctuary's precincts, various campsites beckon with unique offerings. Some feature treehouses that elevate your experience—both literally and metaphorically. Others may offer tents outfitted with modern amenities, striking a fine balance between rugged living and contemporary comfort. There are even camps that specialize in specific activities, such as bird-watching or trekking, providing thematic experiences that sync with the sanctuary’s diverse offerings. These lodgings serve not just as a place to rest but as experiential platforms, each fostering a unique form of communion with nature.

In the end, Dandeli proves to be more than simply a safe haven; it's also a spectacular stage for all sorts of crazy adventures. The sanctuary offers more than a passing acquaintance with nature, with its paved safari paths, one-of-a-kind campsites, and impressive collection of animal and bird occupants. To really appreciate its many facets, to create up your own unique story of exploration and adventure, you must dive in. This haven reaffirms its standing as the go-to spot for eco-tourism thanks to its wide range of affordable and opulent lodging alternatives. Then why sit on the sidelines? Take advantage of this moment and let Dandeli leave an unforgettable mark on your heart.

Mount Fuji hoping to curb its overcrowding problem with new rules for tourists.

The volcano, which is the tallest point in Japan at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet), is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an icon of Japan. While it historically has been revered for its natural beauty and spiritual significance as one of the country's Three Holy Mountains , pilgrimages have been overtaken by a deluge of tourists who cause human traffic jams, leave behind litter and require assistance when they become injured, often when hiking in inappropriate dress for the climb.

Last year, more than 220,000 visitors hiked the mountain between July and September alone and 61 rescue calls for injured hikers were made to local police, reported Reuters.

The Yamanashi prefectural government voted this week to implement new stipulations for people looking to climb the mountain, including a fee and a cap on how many people can make the ascent per day.

"After Covid restrictions were lifted, we started seeing more people," government official Toshiaki Kasai said, according to CNN and The Guardian. "We want them to dress appropriately for the mountain and be well prepared."

Planning on making a trip to see the landmark soon? Be sure to be aware of the new rules.

Mount Fuji implements new tourism rules

Tourists looking to climb Mount Fuji will now have to pay a 2,000 yen ($13) fee per climber for entry. There will also be a cap of 4,000 visitors allowed to scale the mountain per day.

Likewise, stricter guidelines will be put in place to control the people who do hit the trails, including official guides who will supervise the trails and advise people who are engaging in dangerous or inappropriate behaviors such as sleeping beside the trails or wearing sandals for the hike (a more common problem than you'd think.)

“By strongly promoting comprehensive safety measures for climbing Mount Fuji, we will ensure that Mount Fuji, a treasure of the world, is passed on to future generations,” said Koutaro Nagasaki, governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, according to CNN and The Guardian.

The new rules will go into place on July 1 of this year.

How Gen Z is redefining travel: 'I want to get there before it gets too touristy'

Overtourism runs amok in Japan

Japan has been implementing countermeasures to combat over-tourism in recent years, especially during a post-COVID travel surge.

The tourism ministry announced plans late last year to address the issue, reported the Japan Times, including bolstering public transportation fleets in popular areas, charging higher fares during peak travel times, herding visitors away from already overcrowded areas, charging entry fees to more locations and offering more support to local governments dealing with the onslaught.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency , more than 2.5 million tourists have already visited Japan as of January of this year. Between January and November of last year, more than 22.3 million travelers came to the country, the closest Japan has come to returning to pre-pandemic numbers (more than 31.8 million visited in 2019.)

A cruise ship at the end of the square at San Marco in Venice which is crowded with tourists between the old buildings

Entrance fees, visitor zones and taxes: how Europe’s biggest cities are tackling overtourism

From Seville to Venice to Amsterdam, Europe is learning to improve locals’ lives by curbing tourists’ enthusiasm

O riginally built for the grand Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, Seville’s flamboyant neo-Moorish Plaza de España has for nearly a century been one of the city’s major attractions, an ornate showcase for Spanish architecture and decorative tiling.

But the several thousand visitors from around the world who throng the plaza every day, on foot or in horse-drawn carriages, may soon have to pay for the privilege, with proceeds from a planned entry fee going towards its upkeep.

“We are planning to close the Plaza de España and charge tourists to finance its conservation and ensure its safety,” Seville’s mayor, José Luis Sanz, announced on X last week, posting a video showing missing tiles and damaged facades.

Sanz made clear local residents and visitors from Andalucía province would not have to cough up to visit the plaza, which served as a backdrop in a Star Wars film, and is used regularly for concerts, fashion shows and theatrical performances.

Many residents objected to the scheme nonetheless – but their criticism was mostly that it would be complicated to administer and not very effective. Far better, many locals said, would be a hefty tourism tax on all visitors to Seville.

“Mass tourism,” said one, “is destroying our city.”

It’s a refrain heard in historic cities across Europe , from Prague to Barcelona, Athens to Amsterdam. Mass tourism, promoted by cash-hungry councils since the 2008 crash and fuelled by cheap flights and online room rentals, has become a monster.

After plummeting during Covid, tourism numbers are soaring again and set to exceed pre-pandemic levels this summer. The number of low-cost airline seats in Europe, which rose 10% annually from 2010 and hit 500m in 2019, could pass 800m in 2024.

A sticker saying “Tourism kills the city” with a skull and crossbones image on a post in Barcelona

Before lockdown, Airbnb, the biggest but far from only platform for short lets, saw triple-digit growth in some European cities. The net result is that the most popular city break destinations now annually host 20 or more visitors for each local.

What to do about it, though, is no easy question. Delicate balances need to be struck between the much-needed revenues and jobs generated by tourism, and the quality of life of residents; between managing tourism and discouraging it.

One strategy that Seville – 3 million tourists a year for 700,000 inhabitants – may adopt is to charge for the big attractions. Since January, foreign visitors to Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia, which gets about 3.5m visits a year, have been paying €25 for the privilege.

Venice is so overrun by visitors it has introduced what amounts to an entrance fee for the entire city, ranging from €3 to €10. Paris has almost trebled its tourist tax rates, from – depending on area and accommodation type – €0.25-€5 to €0.65-€14.95.

A dense crowd of tourists in sunglasses, some in baseball hats, others in vests, stand with the Acropolis in Athens in the background

Other cities are relying on better management – Athens, for example, last summer introduced a time-slot system for visits to the Acropolis, while summer access to Marseille’s Calanques is now regulated through a free reservation scheme.

Some places are launching information campaigns aiming to reshape tourist flows. France, where 80% of visits are concentrated in 20% of the country, will this spring roll out a €1m campaign urging domestic and foreign tourists to head more off the beaten track .

From Mont Saint-Michel and the seaside resort of Étretat in Normandy to the Atlantic beaches of the south-west and the Riviera, peak-season influxes now threaten the environment, locals’ quality of life and the visitor experience, authorities say.

They are also setting up a tourism observatory to accurately measure flows and identify possible overloads. “France is the world’s biggest tourist destination, but we have a serious lack of data to help manage the crowds,” the government said.

Some anti-tourism measures, however, turn out to be just rumours. Last summer, the walled Croatian town of Dubrovnik, said to be the most over-visited destination in Europe, with 36 visitors per resident, was widely reported to have banned wheelie suitcases.

In fact, as part of a Respect the City campaign urging visitors to dress appropriately in the historic centre and avoid climbing on monuments , the town hall had just asked them to carry their bags over cobblestones to reduce the noise level for locals.

The Netherlands

In the capital of the country that coined the term overtoerisme , tourist might be a dirty word – but Amsterdam is also increasingly desperate for visitors’ cash.

A plan last March to dissuade partying young British men with “stay away” videos warning of fines, hospital and criminal records made headlines worldwide. It’s unclear what effect it had, though, as Amsterdam’s overnight tourist numbers last year hit almost pre-pandemic levels at 9 million – 21% more than in 2022.

A soft-soap Renew your View campaign highlighting positive aspects off the beaten track (rather than sex and drugs) launched in November. Meanwhile the city is expected to expand its stay-away campaign to dissuade nuisance tourists from Germany, France, Spain and Italy after the summer.

A crowd of young people and lots of bicycles outside a cannabis/coffee shop

Since last spring there has been a ban on smoking cannabis in public space in the red light district, while bar closures at 2am instead of 4am have reduced street numbers by between 30% and 60%. However, after complaints about safety, sex-worker brothel windows are open until 6am again rather than 3am.

Amsterdam is reducing the number of licensed B&B premises by 30%, has voted to close a city centre cruise terminal and is trialling tougher licensing measures to remove “rogue” tourist businesses such as candy shops suspected of being criminal fronts.

The council says it is monitoring tourist numbers to try to maintain a balance. But multimillion budget shortfalls and a bill of billions to repair crumbling canalsides mean tourism is essential for Amsterdam: this year, the tourist tax rose from 7% to 12.5%, the highest in Europe , with a day tax of €14 a head for visiting cruise ships. Senay Boztas

Spain received 85 million tourists in 2023, nearly 2% up on pre-pandemic 2019 – and in a country where tourism generates 13% of GDP, after the economic devastation of the Covid years, voices calling for curbs on numbers have been virtually silenced.

The hospitality business, however, continues to chant the mantra of quality over quantity – nowhere more so than in the Balearic Islands, where a new law is being drafted to crack down on drunk tourists.

after newsletter promotion

Last year about 15 million people visited the Balearics (population 2 million), more than half British and German, with a significant percentage coming for what the regional government calls “tourism of excess”: a week-long drinking binge.

The new law to crack down on booze tourism is expected to be in force when the season kicks off at Easter. Under a 2020 law, areas such as Magaluf in Mallorca and Sant Antoni in Ibiza were named as trouble spots.

Heavy fines were imposed for “balconing” (leaping into a pool from a balcony), shops were banned from selling alcohol after 9.30pm, and organised pub crawls, beach parties, party boats and two-for-one happy hours outlawed, Local businesses faced fines of up to €600,000.

But after areas such as Magaluf complained of being stigmatised, the new law will focus more on individuals. Among the planned measures are deportation for antisocial behaviour and a blacklist of people banned from visiting the islands.

Lawyers warn that this would infringe the EU’s principle of freedom of movement, although as the UK is no longer a member, rowdy Brits – who are among the worst offenders – could soon find themselves personae non gratae . Stephen Burgen

After years of talk, Venice is the first major tourist hotspot in Italy to introduce an entrance fee for day trippers. The measure kicks off at the start of peak season on 25 April, and in a first experimental phase will apply only on certain days until 14 July.

The €5 tickets have been bookable online since mid-January. Time will tell whether the controversial initiative works, but with visitor numbers back to pre-pandemic levels – an average of 40,000 day trippers on peak days – and the perennial threat of the fragile lagoon city losing its Unesco heritage status, authorities were forced to act. The city is also poised to limit tourist groups to 25 people from June and to ban the use of loudspeakers because they “generate confusion and disturbances”, Venice council said in late December.

Florence has long suffered from similar overtourism woes and an exodus of residents from its historic centre, prompting the council in October last year to ban new short-term lets in the historic centre from Airbnb and similar platforms.

The city’s mayor, Dario Nardella, said that while the initiative was not a “panacea”, it was a “concrete step” for tackling the issue in a city with a population of about 720,000 that records, on average, more than 16 miilion overnight visitor stays a year.

Elsewhere in Italy, drivers along the Amalfi coast will again be hit by a measure aimed at preventing a perpetual jam along the winding 35km coastal road described as “a nightmare” by locals. Cars with number plates ending in an odd number are allowed to use the road one day, and those ending in an even number the next.

In Cinque Terre, another Unesco site, local authorities are also pondering how to manage overtourism. “We don’t want fewer tourists, but we want to be able to manage [tourism] in a sustainable way,” Donatella Bianchi, president of Cinque Terre national park, said last month. Angela Giuffrida

In Greece, one of the most visited places in the world, soaring tourist numbers are not only straining infrastructure on island idylls but increasingly stretching capacity in Athens, where residents, as elsewhere, are up in arms.

Once a stopover for travellers en route to isles, the Greek metropolis is now a “must-see” destination in its own right, drawing more than 7 million tourists – an all-time record – in 2023, with Americans and Britons topping arrivals.

To cope with an influx that is only expected to grow when the Asian market rebounds, Greek authorities have announced that crowd control policies – implemented in pilot form at the Acropolis in September – will be expanded to other archaeological sites next month.

A cruise ship docks at Mykonos.

Last year, at the height of the season, more than 20,000 tourists a day climbed the hill to see the fifth-century BC site. “We got to the point of as many as 23,000 a day,” the Greek culture minister, Lina Mendoni, said. “Tourism is obviously desirable for the country, for all of us, but we have to ensure overtourism doesn’t harm the monument.”

The visitor zone scheme, in operation from 8am to 8pm, aims to ease congestion, with authorities introducing a time-slot system, electronic ticketing and fast-lane entry points for organised groups. “It will help ensure the safety of the monument and those who work there, and improve the experience of visitors,” Mendoni said.

Museums will also cap visitor numbers from April.

The spectre of the country enjoying another bumper year of tourism has been met with mounting fears among environmentalists on islands where communities have increasingly struggled with waste management, water scarcity, insufficient public services and illegal construction.

In the face of local disgruntlement the government has been forced to step in. On Santorini, where complaints of oversaturation have grown steadily over the years, a berth-allocation system for cruise ships was introduced, with the number of disembarkations in any 24-hour period being limited to 8,000 passengers.

On Mykonos – like Santorini, one of the most popular islands in the Cycladic chain – authorities have clamped down on illicit construction, bulldozing illegally built bars and eateries in prime sites. Helena Smith

El Questro considers boom gate entry as it looks to crack down on free visitors

a homestead and accommodation along a cliff lining a river through an outback setting

The famous Kimberley tourism precinct El Questro has warned it will crack down on fee-dodging visitors, which has led to calls from community leaders for an affordable "locals' pass".

El Questro is famous globally for showcasing the best of the East Kimberley's stunning natural attractions, including dry-season waterfalls, springs, and gorges.

A clear creek cuts next to an orange sandstone cliff and lush trees and shrubs

Renowned geological formations, typified by red-orange mesas and rock faces, form part of the picturesque frontier landscape, which draws everyone from grey nomads to the rich and famous.

Residents in surrounding towns and communities including Kununurra and Wyndham describe a sense of ownership over El Questro and often show visiting family and friends its sights including Zebedee Springs and El Questro Gorge.

Australia-wide accommodation company G'day Group bought El Questro in 2021 and has since snapped up other major tourism operations in the East Kimberley including Lake Argyle Resort.

In an interview with the ABC, chief executive Grant Wilckens stressed the need to find savings at El Questro, given maintenance costs were about $1 million a year.

He said too many people were entering for free, flouting a rule to purchase a visitor pass.

"If they want to come in and see the amazing gorges they need to pay and that is something that we are going to get hotter on," he said.

"We will be clamping down and making sure the access passes are being paid."

El Questro

The sheer size and layout of the tourism precinct allows visitors to come and go from various attractions without stopping at reception, making it difficult for staff to enforce the purchase of passes.

Mr Wilckens anticipated the installation of a ticket booth and boom gate at El Questro's entrance, along the Gibb River Road, in the next two to five years.

"Unless you've got proof you've paid the fee you won't be able to enter. So that's where we're heading," he said.

"El Questro was very run down by Delaware North after 10 years of foreign ownership. We've got some significant plans to invest capital.

"The station needs a pool, it needs some great facilities for our guests."

Delaware North declined to comment.

The CEO clarified that Emma Gorge, further north, would remain free to the public.

Cheap tickets for residents

Locals have been quick to notice a sharp rise in the price of private river campsites, which are especially popular among East Kimberley residents.

Mr Wilckens said the increase was driven by demand, but he hosed down concerns the tourism precinct may eventually become unaffordable to those on lower incomes.

"There will be no problems where we sit to make sure there's a product available for everybody," he said.

Two people sitting on a rock surrounded by water at Zebedee Springs.

Community advocates, including Shire of Wyndham East Kimberley president David Menzel, have raised the idea of an affordable yearly visitor pass for surrounding residents.

Cr Menzel said he understood why some locals would drive into El Questro, relax in a waterfall, and leave without paying.

"It's hard to have your cake and eat it too. We all love our access to the bush but understanding when someone comes in and spends that sort of money they like to have a bit of control over the facilities or the property that they're taking care of," he said.

Tourism operator and long-term resident Maria Bolten Magnay said a cheaper visitor pass for locals would allow people in Kununurra and the surrounding area to soak up the best of the dry season, typified by sunshine and permanent blue skies.

"I think El Questro is held in the hearts of lots of local people, but I certainly don't think El Questro has to provide access to locals for free," she said.

"El Questro is just one of those magical drawcards in the East Kimberley. It has dry season permanent waterholes that are really lovely."

In recent years El Questro has also strengthened ties with traditional owners in the hope it will lead to more economic opportunities for local Indigenous people.

A G'day Group spokesperson said visitor pass revenue was shared with Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation and traditional owners would not be charged an entry fee.
