Wake up to the tranquility of Meganisi, a small and picturesque island gracing the Ionian Sea, situated off the eastern coast of the larger island of Lefkada. The day unfolds on Meganisi, presenting you with the delightful dilemma of deciding whether to plunge into the refreshing sea or savor a leisurely breakfast on the deck. Our suggestion? Why not indulge in both, making the most of the idyllic surroundings.

After a delicious BBQ lunch on board, the ship gracefully navigates towards Vathi, the capital and main port of Ithaca. Renowned for its connection to Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, Ithaca stands as the famed homeland of Odysseus. Vathi welcomes you with a picturesque panorama, featuring colorful houses adorning the waterfront, traditional tavernas and charming shops that imbue the town with a serene atmosphere.

Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, where the echo of ancient tales mingles with the gentle lapping of the sea. Choose one of the typical tavernas that line the waterfront for an evening of culinary delights. Whether you opt for fresh seafood or traditional Greek fare, Vathi promises a feast for the senses. As the night descends, get lost in the captivating charm of Vathi. Whether you choose to savor a moonlit moment on deck or explore the town’s evening ambiance, the overnight stay in Vathi extends an invitation to immerse yourself in the tranquility of legendary Ithaca.

As the sun rises, the vessel departs from the charming port of Ithaca, embarking on a morning journey to the historically significant town of Messolonghi. Your experienced captain promises a scenic route, making a delightful pitstop at a beautiful beach for another refreshing swim.

Have a tasty lunch onboard as you navigate through the Gulf of Patras. Let the sea breeze carry you towards Messolonghi, a town steeped in history, cultural heritage, and a poignant connection to the struggle for Greek independence.

The first adventure in Messolonghi involves a walking tour into the lagoon, renowned for its biodiversity and a sanctuary for birdwatchers. Immerse yourself in the natural splendor as various migratory bird species make this habitat their own. Afterward, wander through the charming old town, where traditional architecture, narrow streets, and historic buildings reflect the town’s diverse history under Ottoman and Venetian rule. Feel the echoes of different eras as you explore the winding streets, absorbing the essence of Messolonghi’s rich past.

As evening descends, dine in one of the local tavernas. In the late evening, set sail toward the iconic Corinth Canal.

As dawn graces the horizon, witness the awe-inspiring passage through the Corinth Canal, a testament to human ingenuity connecting the Saronic Gulf with the Aegean Sea. The morning unfolds with breathtaking views, marking the beginning of a day filled with exploration. Reach the small yet enchanting island of Agistri, known for its natural beauty and crystal-clear waters. Indulge in a final swim off the ship, savoring the embrace of the Saronic Gulf.

A healthy light lunch onboard sets the stage for your arrival at Aegina. Enjoy free time to explore the island and its charming town or opt for our optional excursion, unveiling the Monastery of Agios Nectarios, the ancient temple of Aphaia and the picturesque Aegina town. As the sun sets on the Saronic, relish a Captain’s Farewell Dinner, a culinary celebration of the experiences shared and memories created throughout the cruise.

The voyage concludes with an evening arrival at Marina Zeas. The twinkling lights of Athens greet you, providing a fitting backdrop to reminisce about the days spent exploring the wonders of the Ionian islands.

A cruising guide to the Greek Ionian

  • Chris Beeson
  • June 11, 2015

The Ionian cruising ground off the Greek west coast is one of the Med's most popular destinations. Chris Beeson explains exactly why

Ionian cruising guide

Read about a sailing charter to the Greek Ionian

Why do hundreds of British sailors keep their boats in the Ionian Sea and thousands more head there every year to charter? Try a blend of warm, civilised winds, simple pilotage with minimal tides, good food in romantic locations and idyllic anchorages in abundant bays. If there is another area as tailor-made for easy comfortable cruising then they’re keeping it quiet. Small wonder they’ve been cruising around here for several thousand years.

Ionian cruising guide

The Ionian comprises several Greek islands of the mainland’s west coast

Officially, the Ionian is bounded by Greece, Italy, the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, but for most sailors the name refers to the west coast of Greece, stretching from the island of Corfu in the north, south past Paxos, Levkas, Ithaca and Cephalonia to include Zakinthos in the south.

As you might expect, Ionian Greece is rich in history, having been ruled by the Minoans, Myceneans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Venetians, Turks and, briefly, the Germans since 2000BC. However, as this area is seismically very active, there isn’t much in the way of antiquity.

The area is best known for its links with Odysseus, chronicled in Homer’s Odyssey. After the Trojan War, Odysseus headed home to resume his duties as King of Ithaca but the journey, which lasted ten years, could fairly be described as eventful, epic even. It included storm, Cyclops attacks, Aeolus’ wind bag, cannibals, Circe’s magic, Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis.

However, there is a theory, propounded by Iman Jacob Wilkens in his book Where Troy Once Stood , that Troy was in fact in the Gog Magog Downs in Cambridgeshire, and that the war was between rival Celtic clans rather than Trojans and Greeks, over Cornish tin, which was essential for the production of bronze. Odysseus’ flight was not to Ithaca but to Cadiz, which, to be fair, matches the poem’s description of Ithaca much better than the island itself, and that Odysseus’ course to Cadiz passed through the North Sea and the Channel, where Wilkens explains that Scylla and Charybdis are in fact St Michael’s Mount. Needless to say this is not a view widely held in Greece.

Recent history has been almost as turbulent due to the nation’s economic woes. Yet the Ionian islands remain stable politically. And in most respects they and the coastal mainland are better geared up than ever to meet the needs of visitors without losing their rustic charm.

Ionian cruising guide

The days dawn calm; the Force 3-5 Maistro kicks in at lunchtime, fading at sunset

So what are you likely to experience if you sail here? Let’s start with what will dictate the quality of your sailing – the wind. As a rule, this will be in the north-west. Most days start clear and calm, then a good sailing breeze, known as the maistro , of Force 3-5, builds from midday before it fades away at sunset. For novices or just for lazy days, this means perfect cruising territory.

Hello, maistro

The maistro is far gentler than the meltemi that howls down the Aegean on the east coast of Greece. Ionian gales are not unknown, but they are well forecast and do not last long. Later in the season, winds are more variable in direction.

That said, be aware that conditions can be shifty. The mountainous nature of the Ionian islands means there are plenty of localised effects as the wind converges and diverges around headlands, diverts down channels or is blocked completely, creating patches of calm and sudden gusts. Katabatic winds are also common in anchorages at the base of cliffs.

If you are chartering, flotilla or bareboat, it’s likely that either a daily weather forecast will be communicated to you or you will be briefed to call the base each morning to receive a weather update. You can also ask the port police.

Forecasts are also broadcast on VHF Ch2 and Ch85 at 0600, 1000, 1600 and 2200. You can also check Navtex Ch518. As usual, you can download GRIB files with a weather app on your smartphone where there is WiFi.

Ionian cruising guide

Forecasts – for sailors as well as tourists – are easy to come by in the Ionian

Safe in the knowledge that winds are usually benign, first-time Ionian sailors tend to ask next about the climate. Temperatures in the Ionian range from the low teens in Celsius, in January, to the mid-30s in July and August. Towards the end of the season, in September, temperatures are more comfortable at the mid-20s Celsius.

Unless you are taking your own boat across – if so bear in mind that sailing to Greece from the UK will take several months at least, much longer if you dally en route – most sailors opt to charter and arrive by plane. Budget carriers like easyJet and Ryanair fly direct to Corfu, Cephalonia and Zakinthos throughout the season. As ever, the earlier you book, the greater the bargain you can bag. Charter flights serve Levkas but tickets will be more expensive.

Another option is to make a touring holiday of the journey: drive to Italy in two or three days then catch a car ferry to Greece. These run from Venice, Ancona, Bari and Brindisi to one of Corfu, Patras, Igoumenitsa, Cephalonia and Zakinthos. The passage takes around 24 hours.

Ionian cruising guide

Yachts can clear into Greece from overseas in Cephalonia’s capital, Argostoli

For cruisers with their own yachts there are several ports of entry. On Corfu, you can clear immigration at Corfu Port. However, because you will come a very distant second in the local pecking order to the ferries and passenger ships that stop here, a better bet is to head for Gouvia, about three miles north along the coast. Other options for clearing in include Preveza, on the mainland just north of Levkas, Argostoli on Cephalonia and Port Zante on Zakinthos.

Ionian cruising guide

Poiath Yacht Club is just east of the busy port of Corfu but for clearing in, you’re best bet is Gouvia

Immigration over, or your charter yacht collected, settle into the cockpit with a chart and marvel at the possibilities. Bay-hopping is a constant delight in the Ionian, with beautiful turquoise anchorages to discover, many of which are only accessible by yacht – more on this later.

Ionian cruising guide

If there’s no mains water supply on the dock, there’s likely to be a water bowser

For all their appeal, you will need to visit ports to refill water tanks, iceboxes and galley lockers. Even if you’re drinking bottled water, you’ll probably need to fill up water tanks every other day as after-swim and evening showers take their toll on your tanks. Even the smallest towns are likely to have a supermarket of some description to revictual and water is usually available via a hose or bowser.

Diesel can be more problematic – be prepared to grab your jerrycan and take a taxi to the nearest petrol station. Similarly, bear in mind that shorepower is not always available. Check your pilot guide (see panel right) beforehand to find out exactly what facilities are available where.

Ionian cruising guide

In good conditions, stern-to mooring is not a huge challenge

In most ports, you will be expected to moor stern-to. For first-timers this is often a source of anxiety. Certainly, it can be a little fraught if you’re not well prepared, so it pays to plan ahead. Find out how your boat behaves astern, brief the crew on what they are expected to do and when, and work out hand signals, so you don’t have to shout over the engine, windlass or fellow cruisers offering ‘advice’.

Stern-to, step by step

Before you begin to manoeuvre, prepare two stern lines, one from each quarter, and rig fenders either side to protect your topsides from other boats, including one at each quarter. Move the tender to the bow on a painter that’s long enough not to foul the anchor. Once you’ve identified your spot – be warned, it’s likely to be quite narrow – have a look at the anchor chains of neighbouring boats and try to avoid laying your chain over theirs.

If you can’t avoid it, find out what time the offended parties will leave the following morning, so you can scoot out before them. If you don’t, they could trip your anchor while recovering theirs, leaving you bouncing off the dock.

Engage astern and when you’re beginning to make way, drop your anchor three to four boat lengths from the wall and reverse straight into the gap. If possible, have a couple of crew with roving fenders on the aft sidedecks to protect against any bumps – don’t forget to tell novices never to use their hands or feet.

There is likely to be someone on the quay to take your lines, most likely a local business owner. If not, get close enough for someone to step ashore and pass the lines back aboard to secure. Once you’re happy with the setup, nip up on the windlass to keep the stern lines taut.

The most challenging situation for stern-to mooring is a stiff cross-breeze, which blows the bows off and ruins the approach. In this case, try a J-turn. Having identified where you want your anchor to drop, motor briskly astern into the wind about four boat lengths off the quay, start lowering the anchor and turn the stern towards your chosen spot. It would help to lay the right amount of chain along the sidedeck as you’re likely to be going too fast for the windlass to keep up. Your speed should prevent the bow blowing off too much. Take way off as you enter the gap, then moor as usual. Mooring stern-to in a cross-breeze is as tricky as it gets. Don’t be disheartened if the manoeuvre doesn’t work first time. Bail out, make ready and try again. If it’s just not working, anchor off or look for a berth alongside.

Some ports charge a few euros to moor to the quay overnight. Some are quite pricey. Some don’t bother charging at all, particularly late in the season. If someone asks, show them the ship’s papers and pay what’s due. For charterers, it’s likely that your charter company has negotiated a reduced flat rate in some ports – it’s worth checking this before you book.

A possible new expense is that, as we reported last month, the Greek parliament seems set to demand that commercial or leisure yachts in Greek waters must pay a circulation tax. Charter companies will include this in their overall fee, but visiting yachts and motorboats of 7-12m will have to pay up to €400 (£335) a year. Vessels over 12m will be charged at €100 per metre every year, with concessions for permanently based yachts of either 30% or €10 per metre per month.

Ionian cruising guide

You’ll need long lines aboard to take ashore. These will stop you swinging at anchor

For all the charm of a small harbour, there’s no matching an anchorage for escapism. To make the most of the myriad options, you will need two long stern lines, 50m each at least, for lines ashore, as well as the two shorter stern lines for stern-to mooring in port. A kedge with chain and line is also useful in windier anchorages.

If you plan on exploring the shoreline or are just taking lines ashore, come equipped with some aquatic footwear. Sea urchins like the warm, shallow waters and their brittle spines can snap off then decay in your foot – a sure-fire way to spoil a holiday– and even ashore the rocks can be razor-sharp. I wear rubber-soled dive boots and a pair of sailing gloves.

Wherever you go, navigation is a doddle. One of the great joys of cruising in the Mediterranean is there is almost always somewhere gorgeous within two hours’ sailing. More often than not, pilotage is just a matter of point and go.

Even if it isn’t, the lack of tides means navigation is never especially challenging. There can be some rocks near headlands, but the seabed around most islands, particularly the more mountainous ones, shelves steeply. You can be in 800m depth within half a mile of the coast, so don’t be alarmed if your sounder gives up the ghost – beyond 100m depth, they struggle.

Indeed, the main hazard hereabouts is why you came – the sun. The heat can be oppressive in high season, especially at midday, so equip your boat with electric fans and wind scoops to ventilate cabins and make sure there’s a bimini to shade the cockpit. You might also want to consider solar panels to keep the batteries topped up. Flyscreens for hatches and the companionway are useful to keep out insects without affecting ventilation.

More annoyance than hazard, wasps appear when lunch does. Waft them away or make a simple trap with a bottle half-filled with water and honey dabbed inside the rim. Pop on the lid and give it a shake whenever an insect appears.

WHAT TO DO DURING THE DAY

Old Town

A maze of winding cobbled alleyways and charming piazzas, Corfu’s Old Town has its roots in Roman times and radiates old-world charm.

This UNESCO heritage site is a colorful mix of Venetian, neoclassical buildings, Byzantine churches and Parisian arcades—each a legacy of its previous rulers. Guarded by three fortresses, it boasts a multitude of architectural wonders in delicate shades of pink and ochre, as well as one of the largest squares in Europe, the Esplanade. The 16th century Church of St. Spyridon is one of the town’s top landmarks and you can often hear its bells peeling out across the rooftops. Don’t miss the Archaeological Museum which houses a fine collection of ancient artifacts including the Gorgon Medusa from the Temple of Artemis. Make sure to stop for coffee under the shade of the iconic Liston arcade—modeled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, its terraces are lined with stylish cafés.

ACHILLION PALACE

Achillion Palace

Lovers of myth and legend should take a trip to the elegant Achillion Palace.

Tucked away on the coast just south of Corfu Town, this 19th century neoclassical palace was originally commissioned by the Empress Elisabeth of Austria as a retreat from stifling Habsburg court life and was later owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Empress, a lover of solitude, was said to adore Greek mythology and named the palace after her favorite Greek hero, Achilles. The palace was famously used as a set for the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only and elite travelers can hold their own private gala dinner within its grounds. Wander amid the palace gardens which are peppered with statues of Greek gods. Seek out the bronze statue of Dying Achilles—by far the most impressive.

WHAT TO DO DURING THE NIGHT

Cavalieri hotel rooftop bar.

There are a number of stylish bars in Corfu Town and Gouvia Marina but none offer a more impressive setting than the Cavalieri Hotel’s rooftop bar.

Once home to a 17th century nobleman, the Cavalieri Hotel was among the first luxury hotels to open on the island and exudes a stately elegance. Decorated in a country house style with black and white marble flooring, the hotel interior gives an air of faded glamour. Its rooftop bar provides the finest views over Corfu from its privileged position in the heart of the Venetian Old Town. DAY 1: Corfu to Paxos

gaios

34 nautical miles

The picturesque journey from Corfu south to Paxos is an ideal way to begin your tour of the Ionian—you may be lucky enough to spot wild dolphins that often frolic near boats making the journey.

Just seven miles long and two miles wide, Paxos is a stunning small island covered in olive groves which produce some of the world’s finest olive oil. The soaring limestone cliffs of the west coast have been shaved into monolithic rock formations by the open sea and are pockmarked with caves, while the east coast is adorned with a necklace of untouched white pebble beaches and coves. There are three main villages on the island, each with their own photogenic horseshoe bays and warm harborside tavernas. Lakka in the north is famed for its startling aquamarine waters and the striking Kastanitha cave lies close by, while Loggos is the prettiest of the three with its traditional harbor filled with hand-painted fishing boats. The crystal clear sea and sheltered beaches on the east coast are perfect for snorkeling and watersports should you wish to take a dip. End your day in the main harbor of Gaois to the south and soak up the atmosphere of its wonderful cafés and traditional village stores.

Lakka Harbor, Paxos

Paxos is an island blessed with natural beauty and is ideal for short hikes.

The summer months see the land come alive with wildflowers and butterflies, while fireflies illuminate the olive groves in the month of May. Inland there are countless sleepy hamlets to explore, as well as the ruins of some 60 churches dating back to the 6th century. Lakka is perfectly situated for some fine walks to the island’s old lighthouse, though the best walks are along the Erimitis cliffs along the west coast. These sheer 500-foot cliffs are home to a wealth of bird life and offer stunning sunsets. Erimitis Taverna, known locally as the sunset bar, is a popular traditional taverna from which to enjoy the view as the cliffs transform from chalk white to a rosy hue of pink and gold.

DAY 2: Paxos to Anti Paxos to Lefkas

Anti Paxos

As you coast south towards Lefkas you’ll pass the quiet, picturesque island of Anti Paxos.

Only accessible by boat, this gem of an island is home to two of the finest beaches in Europe but remains virtually untouched by tourism, with sea taxis only occasionally flitting back and forth between Gaios harbor on Paxos. The pearl-white sands of Virka and Voutoumi beach offer a welcome change to the pebbled beaches of Corfu and Paxos, complemented perfectly by the indigo sea and a garland of cliff tops. Life here is lived at a relaxed pace but you can stop for lunch at one of the handful of welcoming tavernas scattered along the waterfront. Adorned with olive groves and fruit orchards, the island is a natural haven and ideal for exploring by foot. Visit in the summer months and you will find nothing but donkey tracks and the ground carpeted with wildflowers.

After the tranquility of Anti Paxos, your next port of call is the colorful town of Lefkas. Because of its connection to the mainland, Lefkas Town is often lively. Devastated by an earthquake in 1948, much of the town has been rebuilt in timber and metal in a startling array of yellows, greens and blues. Serpentine lanes filled with tavernas, shops and bars make this a town full of life and character. The island of Lefkas has a wealth of beautiful beaches, stunning waterfalls, sea caves and ancient monasteries to explore and discover.

Cuisine: Greek

Style/Ambiance: Tucked along the cobbled streets of Lefkas Town behind the church of Agios Spyridon, this traditional restaurant is hailed as the oldest and most popular taverna on the island.

Warm, friendly service and hearty local cuisine is the order of the day at this local favorite. The Regantos family has been serving its delicious char grilled fish dishes with creative flair for decades. Sample homemade Greek classics such as moussaka, stuffed tomatoes and giouvetsi as well as a number of fresh salads and endless appetizers. Sip local wine on one of the timeworn wooden tables that line the restaurant’s colorful Venetian façade and enjoy live music under the lamplight.

FaneromÉni Monastery

There are a number of notable monasteries on the island but Faneroméni monastery makes an easy and picturesque trip from Lefkas Town.

Huddled in the shade atop a pine clad hill just to the west of town, this picture-postcard monastery boasts sweeping views. The museum is a major ecclesiastical attraction and boasts a collection of rare Byzantine icons, manuscripts and gospels which date back to the 15th century. The chapel is adorned with beautiful stained-glass windows and murals.

DAY 3: Lefkas to Meganissi to Lefkas

Papanikolis Cave

23 nautical miles

Towards the southeast of Lefkas, the island of Meganissi makes an idyllic day trip from Lefkas Town.

The largest of the four satellite islands that cluster around Lefkas, Meganissi is one of the lesser-known treasures of the Ionian. Timeless and serene, it exudes the laid-back charm that makes the Ionian Islands so appealing. Stop for coffee in Vathi, the island’s stunning main port which has a sprinkling of pastel colored tavernas and cafés along its waterfront. Then take a stroll through the hazy groves and cool pinewoods before heading to one of the beautiful unspoilt beaches. The white-shingle bay of Spillia is a favorite choice but there are many secluded coves and sandy inlets to discover. The crystalline waters that await are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. As you pass along the coast on your way back to Lefkas Town, make sure to spot Skorpios island which belongs to the Onassis clan—it is here Aristotle Onassis wooed and wed Jackie Kennedy.

DAY 4: Lefkas to Ithaca

kioni

Widely acknowledged as Odysseus’s homeland, the mythical island of Ithaca holds a number of mysteries and legends to its name.

Thought to have been inhabited since prehistoric times, the island is filled with wooded mountains with shady footpaths and along its jagged coast are deep caves just waiting to be explored. The horseshoe port of Vathy, the island’s capital, is relaxed and rustic and the island abounds with quiet, picturesque hamlets. Kioni is one of the few villages that survived the 1953 earthquake unscathed, and is worth a visit for its iconic windmills and tiled, whitewashed houses.

POLYPHEM US GARDEN RESTAURANT

Style/Ambiance: Should you wish to venture inland then this charming restaurant offers a fabulous selection of homemade Greek cuisine.

Set within the picturesque mountain village of Stavros, it provides a truly authentic taste of traditional island life. The old peach-colored Venetian building is draped with vines and adds to the restaurant’s rustic appeal. Dine on classic dishes such as the slow-cooked lamb or mousakka under the shade of hanging vines and lemon trees in the restaurant’s courtyard, which is peppered with antique pots. There is also a great selection of vegetarian options available and the service is warm and friendly.

DAY 5: Ithaca to Kefalonia

Myrtos Beach

10 nautical miles

Rugged forests, wild mountains and spectacular caves—Kefalonia is rich in natural wonders.

The largest island in the Ionians, it was hailed as one of the most idyllic places to live by Forbes and its beauty was immortalized in the Louis de Berniere’s novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Swathed in cypress trees, the northern village of Fiscardo has long been favored by the A-list thanks to the Venetian harbor with its pastel-hued cafés. Spend the evening sampling the delicious fresh fish dishes from one of the many tavernas around town. Kefalonia’s west coast is one of the most beautiful in the Ionian, and is a delight to explore by boat. Make sure to spend some time on the pristine shores of Myrtos, one of the Mediterranean’s finest beaches famed for its brilliant turquoise water. Explore the heights of Mount Ainos on horseback or wonder the southern beaches and look out for the endangered loggerhead turtle.

tassia

Style/Ambiance: A stroll along the seafront and through the alleyways of Fiscardo will reveal a number of hidden restaurants and tavernas.

Tassia is one of the longest running restaurants on the island and names Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg as some of its patrons. Opened in 1972, this traditional family-run restaurant has a reputation for serving some of the best homemade Greek dishes on the island. Head Chef Tassia took the reins from her parents and has continued to celebrate their passion for Kefalonian cuisine. Expect dishes made from only the best local ingredients such as salads dressed with figs, almonds and honey, lamb lagoto with a wine and mustard sauce and their signature Kefalonian veal and beef pie. The delicious fare is complemented by an extensive wine list including a number of Kefalonian wines.

CAVES OF SAMI

These staggering caves are one of the Ionians’ top tourist attractions and a wonder of the natural world.

The huge Drogarati cave is believed to be more than a million years old and is dripping with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over the millennia. The platform of rock named the Royal Balcony makes the perfect setting from which to view an opera or classical music performance that are held in the cavernous Chamber of Exhaltation below. The jewel in the crown of this subterranean world is the underground lake of Melissani. According to legend the cave was once the sanctuary of the god Pan. It is best viewed in the early morning when the light hits the dark turquoise water and transforms the lake into a kaleidoscope of colors.

Asos © ALEXANDRA

Set within a secluded horse-shoe bay, this small, traditional village is one of the most beautiful on the island and is well worth the short, picturesque journey along the southwest coast from Fiscardo.

Its narrow streets are lined with charming apricot-colored buildings with flower-filled balconies and hanging vines. There are a number of excellent tavernas, nestled on the quay beside the pale green water. The village is dominated by the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle, now listed as a European Heritage Site, which sits on a hill connected to the village by a thin strip of land. The castle is a great setting for a romantic stroll and is the perfect spot from which to admire the spectacular panorama over the bay.

Small delicacies from all over Greece are served and there is also an open air cinema to enjoy. At night, soft lamps and candlelight lend the bar a romantic atmosphere.

DAY 6 – 7: Kefalonia to Zakynthos

Zakynthos

40 nautical miles

One of the most visited islands in the Ionian, the island of Zakynthos— often called Zante—represents the finale of your luxury charter.

Your crew will prepare a tender for your final departure as there are no marinas that accommodate superyachts on the island. Its rugged coastline, lush valleys and cobalt sea are heightened by clean beaches and an unfathomable number of sea caves. Adventurers will relish the chance to explore shipwrecks and deep, underwater realms, or roam the green plains and hills on horseback. For those in search of long stretches of golden sand, the small village of Vasilikos on the southern peninsula is renowned for its beautiful beaches. Head to Zakynthos Town to enjoy the many museums and sample the boutiques of Alexander Street. Seek out, too, the Church of St. Dionysios, the island’s patron saint.

The Blue Caves

Leaving the best until last on your seven-day trip, the Blue Caves on the west coast of Zakynthos are one of the highlights of the Ionian.

Here the sea has been slowly whittling one of its masterpieces, cutting deep into the white cliffs to create these iconic arches. Since they are only accessible by boat the caves make an ideal stopover for your charter. Perhaps the best way to enjoy their majesty is to explore by sea kayak or underwater with oxygen—the crystal clear water means you can trace the crevices beneath the surface. Make sure you visit at either sunrise or sunset, when the sun’s rays add to the surreal and magical atmosphere by illuminating the water in tones of sapphire.

SHIPWRECK BEACH

Shipwreck beach

A trip to Zakynthos would not be complete without a visit to the iconic Navagio beach—or Shipwreck Beach as it has come to be known— which nestles in a sheltered cove on the northwest coast.

This sliver of startlingly white shoreline, hemmed in on both sides by soaring cliffs and lapped by a sky-blue sea, is perhaps the most famous beach in all of Greece. The skeletal remains of the wooden ship that lies half claimed by the sand conjures tales of smugglers and buried treasure and has made the site one of the country’s most photographed beaches. It is only reachable by boat so make sure to include it in your tour of the island.

olympia

A visit to this iconic site, one of the most celebrated attractions in Greece, is well worth the trip if you have the time.

Just an hour away by helicopter, Olympia is famed worldwide as the site of the original Olympic Games, believed to be held in ancient Greece around the 8th century BC. Originally a sacred sanctuary used to pay homage to Zeus, Olympia abounds in archaeological treasures. Today the ruins of temples, theaters, altars and shrines lie peacefully shrouded beneath oak and pine trees, hinting at the majesty of this once glorious civilization. The Temple of Zeus once housed a statue of the Greek god in ivory and gold, and was considered one of the seven wonders of the world. But most impressive is the Olympic stadium where a crowd of 50,000 would watch the events unfold under the Grecian sun. Not to be missed is the Archaeological Museum which chronicles the long history of the games and is one of the most important museums in Greece.

BYZANTINE MUSEUM

Zakynthos Town

After the earthquake of 1953 devastated many of the ancient churches and monasteries of Kephalonia, many important art works, frescos and icons were rescued from the rubble.

The Byzantine Museum was born from a collection of those pieces and today is one of the finest collections of Byzantine ecclesiastical art in Greece. Housed within an elegant neoclassical building on the main square of Zakynthos Town, the museum includes an extensive sculpture collection that dates from Hellenic and Byzantine times, as well as Nikolaos Kantounes’s 15th century work, Christ’s Descent from the Cross.

TRAVEL GUIDE IONIAN ISLANDS

The Ionian Islands are a bunch of islands located in the southern part of Greece. They are usually called the Heptanese , but the complex consists of many smaller lesser known islands as well as the seven main ones. The geographical region is very popular to tourists from all over the world with however Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia to be the most popular ones, with Paxoi, Ithaca, Lefkada and Meganissi to follow. Due to the structure of the islands they can be divided in the Northern Ionian islands and the southern Ionian islands.

But why visiting the Ionian islands with a private boat is the best way to do so?

Sailing the Ionian islands is far more comfortable and convenient compared to ferries and land transportation and this is also one of the main reasons why ionian sailing is very popular among travelers. Inconvenient ferry timetables, packing and unpacking your belongings in order to travel from one island to another, being stuck waiting at ferry ports or even inside the ferry lines, is the last thing you wish to do while visiting the Ionian islands. Our ionian cruises either our Zante Cruise or our  Ionian Cruise  offer you island hopping experience around the ionian islands in style. Private ensuite cabins, spacious communal areas, delicious freshly prepared meals from your chef on board and a laid back mentality is the absolute way sailing the ionian sea.

Sailing the ionian islands offers you the flexibility you are looking for during your Greek holidays. There are no check in/ check out times to obey, no overcrowded places that you must get through to reach your preferred destination or herds of tourists lined up to specific locations. It is you and the sea, your boat and the sun. You decide where you wish to go and what time you wish arrive. On board our cruises you will be pampered by our highly experienced local crew that will give you the best recommendations for places to visit and things to do. You will save plenty of time and avoid any local experiences that will not live up to your expectations. Attention to detail is our priority and your ionian cruise with us will create memories that will last forever.

As today is the arrival day and we don’t set sail from the Old Port (NAOK marina) until after sunset, you have plenty of time to explore the wonders of Corfu Island.

The rainfall on the Ionian Islands is what enables its lush and verdant landscapes to flourish. Think of thick forests, natural coves, green hills with olive groves, and ardent valleys that sit back-to-back with crystal clear waters and sparkling white beaches.

Not many people know of Antipaxos, overshadowed by the main island of Paxos, but you will be glad you got to experience this lesser-known beauty spot.

With white pebble beaches, striking blue seas and lush green countryside, Paxos is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. We will dock at the port of Gaios ready for a full day on the island.

Dotted with secluded bays and sea caves, with shallow waters for those keen to explore the underworld of the Ionian Sea, this part of Paxos Island is an explorer’s dream.

SMALL SHIP ISLAND-HOPPING IN THE IONIAN SEA

Old school greek island hopping – now with added aircon and private facilities.

Let’s turn back the clock a few years. Back in the day Greek island cruising was all about a gorgeous wooden motor-sailer. It was about sand in your toes, swimming in a secluded cove, beach BBQs, great company, meals on board, a few drinks and mooring at a waterfront 5 metres from the nearest taverna.

It was wonderful. It was excellent value. But it was also about sleeping on deck because there was no air-conditioning and sharing showers and facilities. Luckily times have changed. This year, we’re bringing back all the great things about old school island hopping and including air-con and private facilities (shower and loo) in every cabin.

It’s still small ship cruising in a 12-cabin vessel. Our itinerary takes us to smaller off-the-beaten track harbours and islands. The price includes half-board. There is a full-time honesty bar. Naturally we have BBQs, a Greek Night and a Captain’s dinner as tradition demands.

We cruise the spectacular Ionian Sea to the west of the Peloponnese. There are three itineraries – two 8-day cruises we call ‘Ionian Jewels’ and ‘Ionian Gems’, or a longer 15 days cruise called the Ionian Odyssey which combines both the Jewels and the Gems. All three are wonderful and still excellent value.

Welcome aboard the good ship Aegeotissa

greece cruise ionian

Our Ionian voyages of exploration are conducted on the good ship Aegeotissa, a motor sailor that can moor tight even to the smallest quayside and get you close to the action. The Captain’s brief is to spend a pleasant time at sea each day, but make sure there is plenty of shore time to discover the local colour or sit and watch the world go by in a waterfront bar.

Our motor sailor has 12 cabins, so the full complement of passengers is normally between 15-24. Cabins are small, with air-conditioning and private facilities, but we don’t have huge storage space so pack lightly. Cabins are made up once a day and linen changed twice a week. There is a sundeck and there are

areas to sit and watch the world go by. We run a full bar and normally a member of the crew will be there to serve you – but if not help yourself, make a note of it and we’ll add it to your final bill.

We all eat together in the dining room at the same time, unless we’re on the beach having a BBQ. Whenever we eat, we try to serve organic food, sourced locally, and freshly cooked by our chefs. We  have a small wine list focused on local wines. All in all we would say it’s comfortable 3-star living.

We have a big focus on wellbeing. In order to combat global warmin,g our vessels run on the cleanest possible energy and we keep cruising time to a minimum – in these waters you don’t need to travel a long way to see a great deal. If we find a messy beach we try and make the time to drop anchor and spend an hour or two collecting the plastic flotsam and jetsam, bagging it up and disposing of it. If you volunteer to join in, you are most welcome and rewards are offered. We are all on the same team.

Discover the Magic of Yacht Getaways – Greece Ionian Explorer

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: March 11, 2024

Greece, with its azure waters, ancient history, and delicious cuisine, has long been a dream destination for travelers worldwide. And what better way to explore this Mediterranean paradise than on a yacht? Yacht Getaways in Greece offers an unparalleled experience of freedom and luxury, all set against the backdrop of the stunning Ionian Sea. In this article, we’ll take you on a journey through some of the most enchanting ports, offering a glimpse into the cost, culture, and culinary delights that await you on this idyllic adventure.

Yacht Getaways – Explore the Greek Islands

Yacht Getaways Ionian Explorer Boat

The Cost of Yacht Getaways in Greece

Embarking on a yacht getaway in Greec e is a dream come true for many, and it’s surprisingly accessible. Prices for yacht charters can start at around 1450 euros per week, depending on the size and type of yacht, the time of year, and the specific route you choose.

Yacht Getaways Greece Costs

When you consider the cost of hotels on the islands in Greece this is a very reasonable vacation. The cost includes not only the yacht itself but also the services of a skipper and hostess/chef offering a hearty breakfast and lunch (including beer and wine) each day plus the luxury of a private cruise through the Ionian Islands. Our crew Ana and Clara took care of every detail from navigation, safety, and preparing delicious Greek dishes on board.

We sailed right into the enchanting towns on the Ionian Islands staying in the heart of all the action. For most of our ports, we could walk right off the boat and were free to hike to hidden beaches, amazing lookouts, or simply enjoy a waterfront taverna to watch the sunset.

A Day in the Life on a Yacht Cruise

Yacht Getaways Greece Ionian Explorer A Day

Each day we left port at about 8 am to beat the rush of tour boats to our swimming spots in the middle of the sea. As our Skipper Ana cruised to our first stop, we enjoyed a breakfast of fruit and bread with hot coffee or tea while Clara prepared our hot meals. Breakfasts were always something different and were a delicious start to the day to keep our energy up for the adventures ahead.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Breakfast

Once breakfast was done, we chose a spot on deck to take in the extraordinary views of the Ionian Islands . We had choices of cushioned lounges above, the trampoline below, lounges at the front, and seats and beds at the back.

We’d stop for a swim and relaxation and while we were frocking in the water, Clara prepared our lunches. Lunches consisted of fresh seafood, Greek Food, pasta, and salads. All were served with our choice of beer, wine, water, or sparkling water. It truly was a dream.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Lunch

It was then on to our port of call where we arrived each day early in the afternoon. Arriving after lunch gave us the perfect amount of time to explore the town, do some shopping, and visit a beach or scenic lookout. Whenever we were docked or anchored, we had access to snorkeling gear, paddle boards, floaties, and tubes to enjoy the day in the crystal-clear waters.

Watch our Video – Yacht Getaways, the Best Way to See the Greek Islands

There were two group meals, one at the beginning of the cruise and one at the end of our trip where we went to a local taverna to bond over delicious Greek dishes and the rest of the evenings were spent doing as we pleased.

Exploring the Ionian Islands

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Corfu

The Ionian Explorer trip with Yacht Getaways begins by setting sail from the picturesque island of Corfu. We spent 3 days in Corfu before our trip which allowed us to see all of the top attractions of the Old Town that dates back to the 8th century BC! Corfu boasts a rich history, with Venetian, French, and British influences evident in its architecture and culture. Unlike the Cyclades Islands of Santorini or Mykono s, Corfu with its whitewashed buildings and blue domes, Corfu will remind you more of Venice with pastel buildings and clay roofs. It is a stunning city.

Before you embark on your voyage, make sure to take some time to explore the old town of Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and savor some traditional Greek cuisine in one of its charming tavernas. Watch our full videos of Things to do in Cofu Old Town.

Embarkation of Yacht Getaways

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Marina Start

We caught a taxi to the Gouvia Marina in Corfu that cost €35 from Mon Repos Palace just outside of the Old Town. Prices are probably cheaper from downtown. We met our skipper and host on the pier and they led us to our 42-foot Catamaran where we unpacked and enjoyed a welcome drink and snacks.

The moment you enter the boat, you know you are in for something special.

About the Yacht

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Yacht

Our Yacht was part of the Superior Class which has four cabins for guests that sleep 8 people. The back cabins are larger with more storage space, and a larger bed, and the shower is separate from the toilet.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Bathroom

The front cabins (where we stayed) are smaller with the shower being a part of the sink so we had to shower over the toilet and sink. It’s not so bad as we showered outside after swimming a lot as well.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explore Front Cabin

Prices are the same for all cabins and are chosen on a first come first serve basis. The sooner you book the better cabin you get. So if you are considering a Yacht Getaway, book it today! And make sure to ask if you will be getting the larger cabin.

We didn’t mind our smaller cabin at all, and it was quieter being at the front as guests sit around the table in the back so you are early to bed, you may hear people.

Packing for Yacht Getaways

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer packing

Make sure to pack light for yachting in the Greek Islands. You don’t need a lot of clothes for a Yacht Getaways trip. There is not a lot of storage space and closet space is limited. There isn’t a place to put your bags, so either pack in small carry-on suitcases or a duffle bag that you can stuff in the drawer below your bed..

For days on the boat, you only need bathing suits, shorts or a sarong. If you want to protect yourself from the sun, pack long-sleeved rash guard shirts that are used in surfing. You can swim in these and it will keep you from getting a sunburn.

Nights are casual, so a sundress for women and smart shorts with a collared shirt for men are all you need for evenings.

  • Water Shoes
  • Travel Towel
  • Running Shoes (for hiking to beaches)
  • Waterproof holder for your phone

Sailing the Ionian Sea

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer First night

Our first night on the boat was spent in Corfu. We left the marina and anchored in front of the Old Fort for stunning views of the harbor. We ate on board and watched a magnificent sunset as we enjoyed a glass of Greek wine.

The trip usually heads north to Kalami Bay where guests have the option to go ashore and eat at a restaurant, however, the weather was severe during our first night, and our skipper decided to start toward Paxos and seek shelter on the other side of the island. It was a good choice because we watched a spectacle of lighting igniting the skies as we sat safely sheltered on our boat.

Lakka Paxos: Tranquility and Turquoise Waters

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Lakka

The next morning was sunny and calm and we set sail from Corfu for a two-hour ride across the deep blue seas. It was heaven as we savored being on our private sailboat watching the scenery of the beautiful islands.

Our first port of call was Lakka on the island of Paxos. This small, tranquil village is nestled within a horseshoe-shaped bay with crystal-clear turquoise waters. I thought that we’d be anchoring in the middle of the bay like the other boats, but Ana pulled right up to the dock. I was overwhelmed with emotion. This place was so beautiful, and we had the entire day to spend paddle boarding, hiking, and swimming. Plus, we were staying the night right in the heart of the village. I don’t think I could be happier.

We immediately hopped on the paddle boards to check out the beaches and then strapped on our hiking shoes in search of the secret beach.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Secret Beach Lakka

The secret beach is about a 30-minute walk from downtown Lakka. It is uphill on a paved road before hitting a single-track rocky trail down to the beach. Wear good running or hiking shoes, and bring water, sunscreen, water shoes, and your bathing suit. It is worth the walk.

The views from above are worth the hike alone as we looked down over the harbor filled with yachts. The blue waters against the colorful buildings of the waterfront made for a picture-perfect postcard view.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Lakka Secret Beach

Surrounded by lush greenery and charming olive groves, Lakka is the perfect place to relax, swim, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. You can enjoy a stroll along the waterfront and dine in one of the seaside tavernas offering fresh seafood dishes.

We had a group dinner in Lakka to get to know our yacht mates and crew and turned in for an early evening after all that fun in the sun.

Logos Paxos: A Hidden Gem

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Logos

As you continue your journey, you’ll reach the charming village of Logos on the island of Paxos. This picturesque harbor is a hidden gem known for its serene ambiance and laid-back charm. Explore the village’s narrow streets, visit local shops selling artisanal products, and eat a seafood dinner at a taverna while watching the sunset over the harbor.

At this stop, you can go for a hike, do some paddleboarding and swimming or hit the beach. There is a great beach with a beach bar just outside town, but there is also a small beach near the dock. And there are plenty of waterside cafes to enjoy an Aperol Spritz or two.

Gaios Paxos: Bustling Port and Greek Delights

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Gaios

Gaios, the capital of Paxos, is your next destination and this was our favorite. This bustling port town has a lot of energy with the party going into the wee hours of the morning along its waterfront promenade. If you want to stay in town it is easy to explore the town’s boutiques and cafes.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Tripitos Arch

We suggest renting an e-bike or quad bike to get out to explore its most impressive view, the Tripitos Arch. This incredible arch is located about 3 km out of the city which can easily be cycled on an e-bike. It is hilly and hot, so we suggest renting a an e-Bike to make the climbs easier. You then hike 500 meters along a historic trail to come out to a coastal trail clinging to the side of massive sea cliffs.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Arch Gaia

You can hike down to the huge arch that stands more than 20 meters high (65 feet) and walk over it. This is not for the faint of heart. If you have a fear of heights, you’ll be feeling it. I had a bit of a panic attack out there as we snapped photos from the side of a cliff. But I am so glad that Dave helped me breathe through it and we kept on walking over the arch to see it from different vantage points. It was beautiful.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Gaios

There are plenty of beaches on the island to explore and by having an e-bike or quad bike you can get around quickly to see some of them. The long port full of massive yachts is worth going for a stroll and you can take a short hike to discover the ancient windmill near Paxos arch. Be sure to indulge in some seafood at one of the local tavernas, or you can savor flavorsome moussaka, grilled octopus, and baklava.

Anti-Paxos: Pristine Beaches and Azure Waters

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Anti Paxos

Just a short sail from Gaios, you’ll find the paradisiacal island of Anti Paxos. This tiny gem is famous for its sea caves, and stunning beaches with powdery white sand.

The trip normally anchors in a secluded bay to, swim, snorkel, and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of this piece of paradise. Unfortunately, a huge swell was coming in and we couldn’t go to the usual stop. But it gives us an excuse to come back one day soon because it is spectacular here.

Parga: Mainland Greece’s Coastal Beauty

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Parga

Leaving the Paxos islands behind, we sailed to Parga on the mainland in Epirus . Nestled against a backdrop of lush hills and cliffs, Parga is a colorful coastal town with a Venetian castle overlooking the bay. We loved this town. It was our second time visiting Parga and we were surprised to find that we enjoyed it even more the second time. Usually, when we go back to a destination we are disappointed, not here. We had more resolve to buy a house here one day!

best places to visit in greece parga

In Parga, there are beautiful beaches and plenty of water sports including parasailing, boogie boarding and water skiing. You can’t miss walking up the castle for views of the waterfront and town.

It was in Parga that we took part in a wine and olive oil tasting.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Olive factory Parga

At the Old Olive Oil factory we tasted different olive oils from the region and learned about the process and history of olive oil production. We also learned that you should never buy olive oil in clear containers. Metal or dark glass are the best choices. After testing our pallets on oil, we moved on to wines.

We tasted six wines from Greece and each was better than the first! For €40 per person, the glasses were 6 generous pours for a tasting followed by a full glass of our favourite choice and some bruschetta bread.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer wine tasting Parga

After our tasting, it was off to the waterfront to join the lively atmosphere where crowds were dining at the local tavernas. We pulled up a seat and enjoyed fresh seafood and grilled lamb before catching the water taxi back to our boat. (the water taxi is included in the Yacht Getaways trip)

Sivota: A Hidden Harbor

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Sivota

No journey through the Ionian Sea would be complete without a visit to the hidden harbor of Sivota. This fishing village is surrounded by green hills and has an incredible swimming area right in the middle of a bay. People were out in the Ionian Sea, paddle boarding, swimming, and kayaking with an area completely roped off from boats that connected the two sides. There is a beach and resort, and you can rent boards and kayaks. We spent the afternoon swimming in the calm waters and savoring our meal of Greek mezes and local wines on the boat.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Sivota Paddleboarding

We then hauled up anchor to a quieter cove on the other side of the bay where we docked for the night. We had our own beach and there was a restaurant just seconds from our boat.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Sivota Harbor

We walked into town which is a 15-minute walk over a steep hill from our marina, but it was worth seeing. There are plenty of restaurants and shops along the waterfront.

Back to Corfu

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Blue Lagoon

The next day was a full day on the water as we stopped at the Blue Lagoon for some snorkeling, paddle boarding, and exploring the cave.

We left Sivota early in the morning to beat the tour boats from Paxos and Corfu and when the others arrived more than an hour after we did, we were grateful for the early rising. We had the cave, beach, and clear waters all to ourselves. Once the huge tour boats filled with day trippers arrived, we set sail for the high seas.

Yacht Getaways Greece ionian Explorer Sailing

The waters were calm and blue as we sailed towards Corfu. We took turns at the helm as Ana showed us how to sail a boat. As we relished our last day on the yacht enjoying the sunny breeze, Clara prepared our lunch which we ate in the waters directly below the Old Fort of Corfu.

It was then one last dip in the sea before heading back to the marina.

Our final night was spent on board but we took a walk to the town of Gouvia which was an easy 10-minute stroll to enjoy a meal outside.

Our Yacht Getaway had come to an end and we went to sleep as the gentle waves of the marina rocked us to a peaceful slumber.

Plus, most of the islands in this cluster are good family destinations and offer affordable accommodation facilities, great restaurants, and tons of entertainment.

Although island hopping in the Ionian is not as popular as it is in the Cyclades or the Dodecanese , it is relatively easy to design your own itinerary with a map, a good and trustworthy ferry search engine, and — of course — some of our guides.

There are seven main islands in this western archipelago. You can visit many smaller ones  in less than a day . The most important islands in the Greek Ionian are Corfu, Zakynthos , Kefalonia , Lefkada, Ithaka, Meganisi, and Kythira .

While the first four are very popular and often overcrowded in summer, the last three are lesser-known, more tranquil, and less visited. The smaller islands in the Ionian are Antipaxos, Syvota, and Antikythira, among others.

Most of these islands have always shared a strong connection with Italy in terms of history and culture, with a remarkable Venetian influence. Many of the old towns in the Ionian Islands, Greece, resemble Venice since the Venetian Republic occupied many of them for centuries.

Some of the Ionian Islands host unique beaches, many of them famous worldwide, such as the green Paleokastritsa in Corfu or the imposing Navagio Beach in Zakynthos.

So, without any further ado, let’s first take a general look at the islands in this group , discover their most beautiful beaches, and combine them into interesting island-hopping ideas.

Corfu Island

Ideas For Things To Do In Corfu In Winter For Everyone - Paleokastrisa

Corfu is the most popular island in the Ionian and the northernmost spot in the group.

It is third after Crete and the Cyclades when it comes to overall popularity, and it offers an interesting and varied landscape with impressive beaches, hills, beautiful old settlements, and one-of-a-kind gastronomy. It is a hot tourist destination and features hundreds of things to do and discover.

Corfu’s northernmost island has an old town with architectural styles varying from Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical buildings, churches, and hometowns.

Corfu’s old town also has a magnificent promenade, the Liston, featuring unique cafés and shops, arcades, and a beautiful square. The city also has a fantastic fortress from the fifteenth century, which kept the island safe from foreign and pirate invasions .

Corfu is an island with great archaeological sites and some of the best interactive museums. The beaches are safe, while many protected bays make Corfu a truly kid-friendly destination.

What to do in Corfu:

  • 🏞️ Explore the highlights of Corfu on a private, personalized tour
  • ⛵ Experience Corfu by water on this private sailboat cruise
  • 🚢 Sail to the northeast corner of Corfu, taking in fantastic views of the surrounding villages of Nissaki, Kalami, Kouloura, and Agios Stefanos on this tour

Paleokastritsa is an essential village in Corfu, not really far from the capital, home to some of the most stunning shores in Greece
  • Nissaki Beach: is probably the next fantastic beach to visit in Corfu after Paleokastritsa; Nissaki is popular for its diving club and its stunning deep blue and green waters. It is a popular and well-organized destination, especially for families.
  • Agios Gordios Beach : this is another popular resort on the island, loved both by couples and families due to its fantastic soft sand and blue seas. The beach is organized and surrounded by incredible rock formations

Zakynthos island.

Blue caves on Zakynthos island, Greece

Ever wondered where in Greece you’d be able to find that impressive Shipwreck Beach with stunning turquoise waters and a backdrop of jaw-dropping white cliffs? Well, Zakynthos is the answer.

But there is more than this worldwide famous beach to the exotic Zakynthos, including spectacular landscapes, many more stunning white-sand beaches, and, believe it or not, some remarkable nightlife that often puts the island among the favorite destinations for families with teens as well as among young adults from all over Europe.

But you will undoubtedly find more. In fact, the island features some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Ionian, with unique hilltop settlements, lonely chapels, historic monasteries, fantastic hiking paths , woods, and more.

What to do in Zakynthos Island:

  • 🏞️ Enjoy a day on the most beautiful beaches, including the famous Shipwreck Beach, as well as the Blue Caves and Bochali Viewpoint, with this tour
  • 🏕️ Discover some of Zakynthos’ top attractions and loveliest scenery in just half a day on this small-group tour
  • 🐢 Get this excursion to admire the Caretta Caretta turtles up close in the bay of Laganas from Zakynthos

The island’s capital, Zakynthos Town, offers unique monuments to visit, interesting museums , and more. Also conquered by the Venetians, the Italians have left an unforgettable mark on the local cuisine and architecture. Big enough to be a destination of its own, Zakynthos can be easily reached from Italy and some of the other Ionian Greek islands .

Best Beaches In Zakynthos

The best sandy beach in Greece - Navagio Beach - Shipwreck Beach, Zakynthos Island, Greece

Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach: The most famous beach on the island and the rest of Greece, this unique white sand shore can only be reached by boat. The imposing landscape is enhanced by the dramatic towering cliffs that embrace the bay, while the old, abandoned shipwreck that gives its name to the beach has become a must-stop for pictures when spending your day in the area.

Gerakas Beach: One more fantastic beach on the island; this shore is known for two different reasons; on one side, it has impressive turquoise waters, and on the other, it is one of the most important shelters on the island for the Caretta Caretta turtle.

Banana Beach: Authentically family-friendly, this is a great organized beach, less than 15 km from Zakynthos Town, where it is possible to swim and give water sports a try. The shore is quite long and ample, which provides you with the idea that Banana Beach is never crowded, even during the peak of the summer.

Laganas Beach: No article about Zakynthos can be complete if there is no mention to Laganas. Since Laganas is the busiest beach resort on the island, it is popular among all travelers. This beach features a diving club and organized facilities and is suitable for solo travelers , families, and couples alike. It offers the possibility to have an active holiday thanks to the many water sports facilities and rest and relax by the sea.

Lefkada Island

Lefkada Island - Sivota Fishing Village

Charming, popular, and refined, Lefkada was on my Europe bucket list for the longest time as it was always described to me as the Greek Caribbean, and with good reasons. Exotic and unique, home to breathtaking beaches and landscapes, Lefkada features some of the most impressive turquoise shores that you can dream of.

This island is an excellent place to enjoy a myriad of water sports, including anything from s norkeling to windsurfing, kitesurfing, and scuba diving .

Playing beach volleyball or simply relaxing on the shores are some of the best things you can do in order to have a relaxing vacation.

Around the island, it is possible to discover dozens of small, heavenly islets, including the well-known Skorpios, among others. Also, during a visit, it’s a good idea to visit the different seaside villages, the unique waterfalls of Dimosari, and the fun and entertaining Lefkada Town.

Lefkada Town is the capital of the island, and it’s the place where visitors can taste the super tasteful local dishes in one of the traditional tavernas or admire the museums and the castle facing the sea.

What to do in Lefkada:

  • 🛶 Explore the lovely Lefkada Island from the water’s edge: this half-day sea kayaking and snorkeling excursion offers exceptional access to the area’s aquatic scenery
  • 🍲 In this workshop , you will get the chance to learn how to cook iconic Greek recipes in a simple yet original way
  • 🚶 Get more out of your time on Lefkada island, and go away from the main tourist trail with your own private guide on this tour

Best Beaches In Lefkada

Porto Katsiki: Arguably the best beach on the island and occupying a remarkable spot among the beaches in Europe, this is the most popular spot in Lefkada and a place that you should not miss. It is about 45 km from the capital of the town.

Egremni Beach: This is another excellent beach in Lefkada . Egremni is a family-friendly beach with a huge sandy coastline where to find the right spot to relax. Although the beach has some organization, the fact that you need to climb steps both up and down to visit may put off some families, mostly when traveling with toddlers or small kids.

Kathisma Beach: Another partly organized, sandy beach that families prefer when visiting Lefkada, Kathisma is close to the capital (about 16 km) and offers some of the finest sand on the island.

Agios Ioannis Beach: Belonging to the village of Agios Ioannis, this famous beach is just a stone’s throw from the capital of Lefkada; therefore, it is quite popular among visitors. It is a great spot for windsurfing and has excellent organization.

Nidri Beach: Well organized and not so far from Lefkada Town, Nidri Beach is about 17 km from the capital. The area has plenty of accommodation ( including hotels , luxury resorts, and convenient studios); besides, the beach features several centers for water sports and some tasty tavernas for a typically Greek lunch or early dinner.

Ithaka Island

Although not as popular as other islands in this archipelago, Ithaka can be a fantastic island-hopping destination in the Ionian Sea. It is located close to Lefkada and Kefalonia, so putting the three together in an island-hopping itinerary can prove a winning idea .

Ithaka has been long known for being the home of Odysseus, the mythical hero that Homer described in his literary masterpiece. But the island has even more to offer to its visitors.

Like most of its sister islands in the Ionian cluster, Ithaka is green and lush, and it treasures some unique traditions in its extraordinary small settlements. The island also features amazing beaches with an exotic yet very charming flair.

Ithaka is a grand island to discover the local culture. Despite being quite a popular summer destination, most of Ithaka is still relatively calm and traditional, with quaint settlements and traditional Medieval villages having prevailed against the advance of mass tourism.

Popular activities for families and couples on the island include swimming, hiking, and sightseeing. Let’s take a look at the best beaches you need to discover in Ithaka when you visit.

Best Beaches In Ithaka

Ithaca beach landscape Greece

Green and attractive, the beaches in Ithaca often showcase fantastic turquoise waters, unique surrounding landscapes, and a calm atmosphere.

It is not hard to find secluded bays and coves on the island and several more popular beaches with organized facilities, including the amenities you need for a relaxing holiday, such as hotels, resorts, cafes, bars, and Greek restaurants. Here, we bring you the best beaches you should not miss in Ithaka.

  • Agios Ioannis Beach: this fantastic family-friendly shore in Ithaka features golden sand and emerald seas. It is pretty family-friendly, and it is about 9 km from the center of Vathy
  • Frikes Beach: home to a harbor receiving boats with tourists intending to explore this shore, Frikes is a popular beach with impressive crystal waters. The small bay is not organized; therefore, packing every essential for a beach day is a must when heading there
  • Pisaetos Beach: a name that is important to remember if you’re visiting from Kefalonia since the beach hosts a small port receiving boats and visitors coming from this nearby Ionian Island. The beach is less than 10 km from the center of Vathi, and it is quite popular even when the organization is virtually non-existent
  • Dexa Beach: this small sandy beach is probably the most convenient beach to visit since it is only 2 km from Vathi. The shore has some organization, but being so close to the capital, you feel that the area does not need tavernas and cafés

Kythira Island

Island Of Kythira Greece - Chora, Kapsali village view at Sunset

Relatively remote and entirely off the beaten track, Kythira is a top Greek destination in the Ionian Sea for those looking to get lost, relax, and rest from stressful daily routines.

Kythira is pretty close to the island of Crete and the coast of the Peloponnese . The island has a remarkable collection of Medieval monasteries , castles, churches, incredible secluded beaches, and incredible natural hikes that you can explore at your own pace.

Among the best things, you can discover a fantastic Venetian castle that overlooks Chora’s whitewashed main town. From the castle, you can enjoy panoramic views of the coast of the Peloponnese and the rest of the Aegean: Amazing for sunset!

Getting to Kythira is more accessible from the coast of the Peloponnese . Boats depart from the port of Neapolis and offer daily ferry crossings. A trip from Neapolis to Kythira can last from 1.5 to 2 hours.

For those who need to reach Kythira from Athens, it is a good idea to keep in mind that there are just a couple of ferries reaching Kythira from Piraeus, so the best thing to do would be to do to travel by bus to Neapolis and then board the ferry.

Best Beaches In Kythira

Lesser-Known Greek Islands - Kythira

Some remarkable beaches in Kythira should be included in your visit; the following are the shores that we recommend (and the most beautiful ones, of course!).

  • Kaladi Beach: one of the best beaches in Kythira and quite popular, the beach has small pebbles and crystal clear turquoise waters. The beach is on the eastern part of the island, and it’s divided into three different parts, one of them being an impressive cave. When visiting with the family, remember that the beach is not organized
  • Diakofti Beach: located in what could be defined as the most exotic area on Kythira, the beach has shallow and turquoise waters and fine white sand. It is found on the northeastern side of the island, and it’s a fabulous spot for young children since it’s calm and shallow. The organization is relatively limited, but some local tavernas are in the area
  • Avlemonas Beach: ideal for families with children, Avlemonas is the beach of a village with the same name, and it is so safe that most families with small kids come here to teach them to swim. The area is well organized, with several tavernas for meals, drinks, and cold coffee
  • Kapsali Beach: a good spot for swimming, diving, and snorkeling, this beach has both pebbled and sandy areas; it is well organized and not really far from Kythira’s Chora

Putting Everything Together: Island Hopping The Ionian Islands

Island Of Kythira Greece - Chora

The Ionian Islands are connected by a local ferry line, making it uncomplicated to explore several Ionian Sea islands and for travelers to design and follow their own customized island hopping experience.

Although a dream until not so long ago, it’s been about four years since a local ferry line by the company Ilida Paxos connects all the Ionian Islands.

Island hopping is made super easy since passengers can now travel from Corfu to Paxos, the Port of Vasiliki in Lefkada, the Port of Pisaetos in Ithaka, Kefalonia, and Zakynthos. Including all of these destinations in one trip is a good idea , provided you have at least ten days to explore slowly.

However, Kythira remains relatively off the beaten track even when it comes to island hopping, so we suggest discovering Kythira on its own to cut travel time during the trip or combine it with a visit to the western area of Crete.

The service usually runs three times per week, but schedules are often subject to change according to the season ad the weather conditions.

The Ionian Islands  In Greece Routes

Available at the time of writing include:.

  • Corfu – Paxos is ideal for those with only a week available and limited time to explore. The highlights of Paxos can be explored in just one day, while the six remaining days could be devoted to exploring Corfu.
  • Kefalonia – Ithaka is a perfect combination for nothing but peaceful holidays, while you should definitely include Zakynthos in the itinerary if looking for some night fun.
  • Zakynthos – Kefalonia is a perfect and balanced combination for fun and relaxation.

Keep In Mind The Following

Ideas For Things To Do In Corfu In Winter For Everyone - Old Byzantine fortress

Since Lefkada is the Ionian Islands located in the middle of the Ionian Sea, it is a good idea to combine a visit to Lefkada with Zakynthos , Ithaca, and Kefalonia. As an alternative, it is possible to visit Lefkada and Corfu , Paxos, and Antipaxos.

Islands In the Ionian Sea & How To Get To Them

The islands of Corfu, Zakynthos, and Kefalonia have airports , so you can directly fly to any of them and then board a ferry boat to keep moving in the area.

It is also possible to fly to Athens and, from there, board a plane to Corfu , Zakynthos of Kefalonia. Traveling from Athens is also possible by car or bus. You will need to reach the port of Patras and, there, board a ferry to Zakynthos , Kefalonia, or Ithaka.

The road trip is about 3 hours, and you must remember that from Patras to Corfu, you need at least 5 hours by boat.

So tell us, which islands in the Ionian Sea will you sail to first?

Thank you so much for this informative information. I so wanted to go to Navagio Beach, but I understand that will be closed all summer. So I may delay the trip until next summer, or is it still okay to travel solo to Corfu and maybe Paxos for a few days. I’m planning to do my usual yearly vacation in Italy.

There are los of other beaches to go to instead of Navagio. That said, yes solo traveling in Greece is easy and safe. Check out this guide https://www.chasingthedonkey.com/solo-travel-in-greece-solo/

Is it worth hiring a small car to take on the ferry to explore each island ?

100% yes!!! We always drive, we never take public transport as we love to explore every nook and cranny.

Thanks for all the detail in your blog! It is very helpful. How far in advance do you recommend booking ferry tickets for the connections between Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada, Paxos and Corfu? I am hoping to do the Ionian islands over 3-4 weeks in July (flying into Zakynthos) but I cannot seem to find any available routes online eg. Ferryhopper and DirectFerries do not show any ferries. Thanks in advance :)

I would start to book them from March onwards for travel this summer, or July for springtime.

Small Ship Cruises in Ionian Islands

A small ship cruise of the Ionian Islands gives you the chance to explore the mythical home of the Greek hero Odysseus which has been the subject of fascination and passion for writers and travelers alike since ancient times. The islands are varied, some with well-developed resorts and bustling cities and others tranquil and traditional in nature. What the islands have in common is some of the best beaches and the kind of clear turquoise waters that are a dream to swim in. A small ship cruise can take you to see the very best of each island and puts the dozens of special spots only accessible by boat within reach.

Best Ionian Islands cruises and areas to visit

A great deal has been written, filmed, and spoken of the magical island of Corfu over the years. The island has so much beauty from the top of its mountainous peaks, through lush forest, and down to the long white sand beaches that trim the coast. Corfu is a bustling and multicultural island with influence from both the East and West as well as strong cultural ties with nearby Italy; Venetian architecture and traditions can be seen all over the towns and the main city of Corfu. The island is the best developed of all the Ionian Islands, and plush resorts with beautiful, well-kept beaches are found all around. There are also several impressive historical sites and museums around Corfu town, including the remains of an ancient Doric temple to the goddess Artemis. That is not to say the island is without its secluded hidden gems. A glimpse into the Corfu from the writings of Lawrence Durrell can be found on the Diapontian Islands a clutch of tiny islands in the northwest of Corfu still very much living in the old traditional ways of the archipelago.

Also popularly known as Zante, this island has two sides to its wonderful personality. Luckily, a small ship cruise of the Ionian Islands will allow you to see both. The south of Zakynthos is a hub for nightlife and a party atmosphere with plenty of resort towns and popular beaches. The northern part of the coast enjoys a more peaceful vibe and some of the archipelago's most dramatic scenery. A small ship cruise can take you to some of the most remote and beautiful beaches, including the world-famous Naviago or 'shipwreck beach'. Only accessible by boat, this white sand beach is famed not only for its much-photographed shipwreck and dramatic cliffs but also for the crystal-clear turquoise waters that surround them. It is ideal for jumping off a small cruise ship and taking a dip.

Proving that small can be the most beautiful, the island of Paxos is one of the most untouched islands of the Ionian archipelago. The island's green coast is lined with long stretching sandy beaches and littered with tiny hidden strips of sand. A small ship cruise is a perfect way to find an isolated spot and explore the numerous small fishing villages dotted around Paxos. These small villages are home to quirky little souvenirs and art shops, restaurants and of course the traditional Greek tavernas. Paxos is, in general, a popular place to be on the water with many private yachts visiting the island. It is also popular for canoeing, paddleboarding, and water skiing, thanks to the beautifully clear and calm waters. Many small ship cruises of the Ionian Islands will stop off at the small neighboring islet of Antipaxos famed for its impressive beaches and untouched beauty.

Best time to cruise in the Ionian Islands

There is no bad time to take a small ship cruise of the Ionian Islands, the weather varies slightly with the seasons but is usually dry and pleasant. The peak of the season is from June to August when the islands can be quite busy, making your small ship cruise boat the perfect escape for a quiet evening drink. The weather is at its hottest during these months, around 30°C (90°F), and the clear skies offer plenty of sunshine and warm balmy nights. The months on either side of the high season May and September to October are also warm and sunny although the islands are less busy and you might find more options available, unlike the high season when you have to book well in advance.

How to get to the Ionian Islands

Flights to the Ionian Islands are numerous, particularly to the larger and more developed islands such as Corfu and Zakynthos. There are flights available to these islands from Athens which has direct flights from New York and connecting flights from many other US cities. Direct flights from major European hubs such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Rome also exist.

Ionian Islands Cruise Tips

  • As with much of Greece, these islands are extremely hot during the summer, and it is always wise to bring ample sun protection. Outside of the summer, the evenings can be cooler, which means despite warm days, evenings require warmer clothing.
  • Many of the islands have been an artistic and literary inspiration over the years. It is well worth checking out the works of Lawrence Durrell and Homer, which both feature the archipelago. They are perfect sundeck readings. Also, if you are looking for souvenirs or artistic pieces from a local painter there are many stunning pieces in the local shops.
  • The local food is a wonderful mix of Greek and Italian cuisine, in no dish is this more obvious than pastitsada a pasta dish with typical Greek meat and spices, a must-try for culinary enthusiasts.

For a One Week Cruise in July & August

Welcome on board the yacht Syrolana

greece cruise ionian

Sailing the Ionian Islands

Transfer from Athens Airport the Saturday (meeting at 4:30pm) then boarding the evening in Messolongi or  Astakos , face to Ionian islands.

Transfer back the next Saturday morning with arrival at Athens Airport around 1pm.

There are many beautiful places in the area and Ionian offer generally excellent sailing conditions in July and August.

A very quiet weather, for those who aspire to a peaceful cruise on diaphanous waters.

In the middle of the day we anchor generally on a nice cove (lunch on board), swimming and snorkeling, and then we sail to the next Island harbor in the afternoon where you are free to visit and have dinner. We also swap and pass two nights on anchor in a nice bay, under the stars…

greece cruise ionian

Our private OR cabin cruises are from Saturday to Saturday.

This is the indicative itinerary offered for our cabin cruises.

Should we also go to Fiskardo (the “St. Tropez” of Ionian), our itinerary focuses mainly on coves, small ports and islands in the area, out of big tourist places.

If you choose a private cruise the Captain adapts the route to your wishes taking into consideration various factors such as ports, weather forecast and … the return date.

Friday evening, return to Messolongi or Astakos

Saturday morning: Leaving the yacht for a transfer to Athens Airport

Safety briefing and Introduction, familiarization, relaxed evening.  This itinerary applies to both the 2 Week Ionian Sailing Tours (Supported Flotilla and Skippered Charter).

Cruising in the direction of Nidri and Ithaka… Following the one week cruise itinerary to Sami on Kefalonia.

Sailing south to Poros with swim and lunch stops along the way, stopping overnight in the village port. Poros is located towards the southern end of the east coast of Kefalonia and is the primary link from Kefalonia to mainland Greece with a daily service to Kilini. Poros is not one of the busiest tourist resorts with most visitors favoring the other more commercial resorts in the south west region. However, Poros has a more authentic, traditional Greek feel to it which can be exactly what some people are looking for.

greece cruise ionian

Days 4. Depart after breakfast.

Sailing south towards Zakinthos island and to the bay and port at Agios Nikilaos where we normally stop for the night in this sheltered bay to enjoy a relaxing evening while we plan our circumnavigation of the island. Zakinthos is one of the most exotic Greek islands. Sitting in the heart of the mesmerizing Ionian sea, it boasts a wonderful natural landscape and enchanting, secluded beaches, hilltop villages, traditional monasteries and dreamy natural landscapes.

greece cruise ionian

Days 5 and 6 Circumnavigate the island.

The direction depends on the weather and winds. The main attractions on Zakinthos are Turtle Beach and the famous bay with the shipwreck. Marathonisi island, also known as Turtle Island is located in Laganas Bay, a few miles away from the south east coast of Zakinthos. The island is a habitat only for sea turtles and it has been a place for their mating and egg laying. The island is covered with dense trees and has two beaches, one is sandy and the other is a rocky beach. You can get down at the beach, explore the island, and watch the turtles. Ship Wreck bay is on the other western side of Zakinthos. Overnight stops can be in the port of Zakinthos and other areas around the island, like; Keri Port and port Vromi, but most of the south and west, we would need to anchor as there are few ports to stop in.

greece cruise ionian

Sailing north with swim and lunch stops along on the east coast of Ithaka. Arriving in Frikes village port for the evening and back into the return leg.

Day 8. Depart after breakfast.

The itineraries for the 1 week and 2 week cruises that are given in this website may change depending on the weather, mainly prevailing and forecasted wind conditions and sea state. Our goal is to cruise safely and gently to offer the most comfort and the best quality of experience. If there is a potential for adverse sailing conditions, we will sail an alternative route or wait at anchor or port for better weather.

Skippered Charter Addons

Which type of charter should i choose what’s the difference between elysium yachting’s supported flotilla and skippered charter.

If you want to rent a yacht that you sail as the skipper, with other yachts, then you must book the Supported Flotilla. You, or anyone else in your group, must be certified to sail the yacht. We will need to see your original skipper’s license before we hand over the yacht to you.

You will sail your yacht under the capable support and guidance of our experienced skipper, who will inform you about navigating the passage, the winds, wind changes, tides, currents, any hazards and best anchoring and mooring practices for the locality. Our skipper and an extra crew member will offer all assistance to make your sailing tour pleasant, safe and exciting. You are responsible for the food and drinks on your boat, the fuel and port fees, if any. We strongly recommend that you purchase hull damage waiver insurance to cover you in case of any damage to your boat, caused by you. Give us a call for more information about this insurance.

Skippered Charter

A skippered charter is where we provide the yacht and skipper, and all you have to do is bring yourself, and your friends or loved ones. Some clothes and other stuff would be handy too, obviously. To select this option, select Skippered Charter Book a Berth/Bed. Our skipper will sail the yacht, and prepare breakfast and light lunches for all guests onboard, answer your questions, and be your fount of knowledge on all things related to your tour. You can help with sailing chores if you’re nautically inclined, or just chill out on deck and enjoy the sunshine. You will share a cabin with another guest, you have your own bunk bed. If you’d like a cabin to yourself, you can inform us and we will do our best to accommodate you, there is a cabin supplement charge involved.

Your breakfast, and a light lunch will be provided.by us daily. Dinners are usually had ashore, in a restaurant or taverna. Occasionally, we have a beach BBQ in a secluded bay on anchor.  Your skipper will tell you about the local attractions in every destination. If you’d like to bring any food or drink onboard, you can. There is a fridge or cold box on board to store your goodies. If all of you in the group are so inclined, you could contribute into a kitty and shop for food as a group.

The Supported Flotilla and Skippered Charter options both allow you to select a 1 week or 2 week sailing tour. The itineraries for both tours are given in the Itineraries tab above.

I’ve never sailed before, can I book the Supported Flotilla?

Yes, if somebody in your group has a valid Skipper’s license, equivalent to an RYA Day Skipper’s license at the very least. The person holding the skipper’s license should send us a copy by email so we can confirm your booking, and they should bring the original copy of their skipper’s license to collect the boat. If there is nobody in the group with a skipper’s license, you will have to rent a skipper from us. This service costs 150€ a day, for the duration of your sailing tour.

I’ve never sailed before, can I book the Skippered Charter?

The answer is a resounding Yes, you can. Being on a skippered charter is a great way to discover your love for sailing and the sea, if it’s been a dormant desire. We have known many guests go on to become skippers themselves after sailing on a Skippered Charter. Your skipper will be glad to share their profound knowledge of he boat, navigation, sailing and all things nautical with you. If you want to know how something works or how it’s done, just ask. If you want to learn by doing, just let the skipper know, and you can do some of the sailing chores such as manning the winches, doing the anchor handling or assisting with coming alongside.

What’s the weather like in Greece?

Greece is one of the sunniest places in Europe, with an average of 61% cloudless days in a year. Average temperatures in the Ionians range between 23C to 31C from end April to September. August is usually the hottest month of the year, with 31C being the average high.

What should I pack for my sailing tour?

It depends on when you’re sailing. Thin Tshirts, shorts, and other lightweight summer clothes are best suited for the weather from April through to September. Take a windcheater with a hood for windy days, and a few long sleeved tops. If you have sweatpants or leggings, pop some in your bags for nighttime wear. Sunglasses are an essential item in Greece. Sandals and slipons are easy to step into when going ashore and kick off when coming onboard. Bring plenty of sunscreen, ideally high SPF and waterproof. There are cool waterproof bags or drysacks you can buy in various sizes, it will keep water from getting into your expensive camera, phone, other electronics or travel documents.

Why do you recommend extra travel insurance? I’ve paid for my tickets and booking with my credit card, won’t the implied insurance provided by my credit card company cover all my travel insurance needs?

We strongly recommend that for both types of charter, you purchase dedicated travel insurance to cover you and your group for the duration of your voyage. Travel insurance that is provided by your credit card may not be the best option. In an emergency, you want to be supported swiftly, to the maximum extent possible.

We are not associated with these businesses in any way, and urge you to do your own research. We cannot be held liable for any losses or damages arising out of your use of the services given in the above links.

Local Currency

The Euro is the currency used in Greece, which is the common currency in the entire Eurozone. If you want to change foreign currency, you can do so at any bank or currency exchange, but there aren’t that many currency exchanges in Lefkas. The easiest way to withdraw Euros would be through an ATM, and there is an ATM in Lefkas. Check out this  website for a list of local ATMs. This is best way to convert your currency to the local currency, because this eliminates the risk of getting stung by manipulated conversion rates offered by hole -in-the-wall money changers. Check out the best cards to use in the Eurozone and carry those. Then your exchange rate is either set by your bank or your credit/debit card provider. Do some research to find the best way to convert your currency while in Greece. This could save you some money! Make sure you get the best rates during your stay and sailing holidays in Greece.

If you’re an EU citizen, all you need to carry is some form of ID such as a national ID card, especially if you’re from a Schengen nation, but carrying your passport is recommended because EU nations can reintroduce temporary border controls in times of emergency. Go  here  for more information about EU travelers travelling within the EU.  If you’re a non-EU citizen, chances are you may have to obtain a visa prior to booking your sailing tour. The citizens of many non-EU nations can obtain an ETIAS visa waiver from November 2023 onwards. Greece is liberalizing its visa regulations, go  here  to find out more. Make sure you get your visas organized well in time to start your flotilla holiday or other sailing holidays in Greece!

Holiday and Health Insurance

If you’re a national of an ETIAS visa waiver nation, you may not require mandatory health insurance to  enter Greece , but dedicated travel insurance is strongly recommended when undertaking adventure tours such as flotilla and skippered charter sailing holidays. Read up and do your own research to avoid any holdups at the border. Greeks are mostly friendly and obliging, but rules are still rules. Having good holiday and health insurance gives you peace of mind during your flotilla holidays and other sailing holidays in Greece!

Driving in Greece

Greeks drive on the right, and seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Children under the age of 10 cannot travel in the front seat, and children under 3 must be seated in a suitable child restraint in the back seat. Most newer cars have  ISOFIX  anchor points fitted in the back seat that you can use to anchor the child’s car seat.

If you plan on driving in Greece a valid driver’s license is required, whether you’re driving your own car or a rental. If you’re an EU national, your national driver’s license is acceptable at car rental agencies. If you’re a non=EU national, you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Greece. Do your research before you travel. and obtain the correct documents. Visit this  website  for lots of useful information about driving in Greece. Look in the Getting Here tab to learn more about travelling to Lefkas Marina.  See you soon in Lefkas to begin your sailing holidays in Greece!

Nightlife and Going Out

The nightlife in places like Athens and Mykonos is vibrant and exciting. Greeks and tourists alike love to dress up and go out on the town, especially on the weekends. In places like Lefkas, the choice of nightclubs and bars is more limited, although tavernas, bars and restaurants abound close to the marina. You will not be left wanting for entertainment while in Lefkas. A simple web search will bring up a whole bunch of places to eat out at. About tipping at restaurants, leaving a cash tip, of around 10 to 15% of your bill is the way to go. Service charges are generally not added to the total, though this may vary between restaurants. Sampling the local nightlife is a great way to have a smashing good time on some of the islands in your flotilla holiday or island hopping sailing holiday in the Ionians!

Vaccinations and Inoculations

The CDC recommends Hepatitis B vaccination for travelers of all ages entering Greece, and rabies vaccination for people who will work directly with wildlife. Check your local inoculation recommendations for Greece before you travel. COVID vaccination certificates and negative COVID tests are not mandatory to enter Greece.

The legend has it that Paxos Island was formed when Poseidon, the god of the sea, severed the south tip of Corfu island with one mighty blow of his trident and dragged it south to create an idyllic retreat for his beloved wife Amphitrite. With an area of 25 sq. km and a population of 2500 inhabitants this green island, covered mostly with olive and cypress trees, is the smallest in the Ionian Sea.

The port town of Agii Saranda is situated in the southeast part of the country of Albania and is about 14 km east of the northern end of Corfu. In ancient times city was known by the name Onchesmus.

The town of Parga is situated in the province of mainland Epirus. Like a picture postcard from the past, the amphitheatrically built cosmopolitan city of Parga is one of the most popular destinations of the northwest mainland of Greece. The beautiful and very green landscape is often a pleasant surprise for visitors to Parga. With its natural beauty, picturesque bays, amazing beaches, the thousands of olive trees and enormous pine trees look like they are marching towards the Ionian Sea, which is often only separated by a small sandy strip.

Among Mainland Greece’s most beautiful features, the Sivota Islands are blessed with sun-soaked shores, sandy beaches, natural coves, and the traditional fishing village of Mourtos.
