- Baotou is the largest city in Inner Mongolia by urban population (2 million). The population of Baotou Prefecture is around 2.7 million.
- It is China's largest source of minerals , the world's No. 1 source of rare-earth metals (used in electronics), and one of the important industrial bases of China.
- Baotou Prefecture covers an area of 27,691 square kilometers (10,676 square miles) — roughly the size of Massachusetts or Wales .
- Baotou has a 214-kilometer (133-mile) stretch of the Yellow River running through the prefecture.
- Records of human settlement can be traced back to almost 5,000 years ago .
- In 1809, Baotou was recognized as a town, and it became a city in 1953, when it was known for steel production . Now it's also known for processing rare-earth minerals .

Baotou Weather — Best Times to Visit
Baotou has a semi-arid continental climate , with short hot summers, long frozen winters, and large temperature differences seasonally and between day and night.
The annual average temperature range is -19–-6°C (-2–21°F) in January to 19–32 (66–90°F) in July.
Best Times to Visit
The optimum time to visit is from summer to early autumn ( June to October ), when the weather is the most pleasant, and the grasslands are in the best condition.

2. Appreciate the Tibetan Culture of Baotou
Wudangzhao Lamasery , 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Baotou, is the largest and best-preserved Tibetan Lamasery in Inner Mongolia.
Meidaizhao Lamasery is unique in layout, as it is more like a walled city, with temples, royal palaces and city gates.
Both are important centers for spreading Tibetan Buddhism in Inner Mongolia and are of great importance for the study of the history, religion, and arts of Inner Mongolia.
3. Discover the Oldest Great Wall
During the Warring States Period (475–221 BC), King Wuling of Zhao (r. 325–299 BC) built a section of "Great Wall", which remains in Baotou as the oldest Great Wall section in China.
In addition, a section of the Great Wall of the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC), when the Great Wall was actually first formed by linking up previously-made sections of defensive wall, lies in Baotou and stretches for around 120 kilometers (75 miles). The beacon towers and ruins of the wall can still be seen from a distance.
Even if you have already visited Great Wall sections in or near Beijing, you should still take a visit to see the oldest Wall, trace its history back to over 2,000 years ago, and find the differences.
4. Learn about China's Modern Industry
Baotou is known for the steel industry and its factory visits .

Getting to Baotou
Baotou Erliban Airport , the second largest airport in Inner Mongolia, is 17 km (10 miles) away from downtown areas. The airport serves Baotou with flights to major cities including Beijing , Shanghai , Taiyuan , Shijiazhuang , Shenzhen , Zhengzhou , Chongqing , Shenyang , Guangzhou , and Chengdu .
Airport express buses run between the airport and Header Hotel Baotou. Or you could take a private airport transfer for a worry-free journey.
The two main railway stations in the city are: Baotou Railway Station in Kundulun District and Baotou East Railway Station in Donghe District. The distance between the two stations is 16 kilometers (10 miles).
From Baotou to Beijing , bullet train services are available to both stations taking around 3½ hours. Other cities reachable by bullet trains include Hohhot, Zhangjiakou, Datong , Taiyuan, and Zhengzhou.

The spectacular Singing Sand Ravine is located in Ordos City, 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Baotou. Undulating dunes, singing sands, oasis and Mongolian landscape are the highlights of this scenic spot. Sand surfing or exploring the desert on camelback, seeing far-reaching yellow sand dunes under the bright sky and snow-white clouds evoke poetical feelings. When in Ordos, the Genghis Khan' Mausoleum is a must see. The tomb of the famous king remains a sacred place for Mongolians to worship and remember. There is no lack of green resorts in Baotou. Xilamuren Grassland is a famous summer resort on the bank of the Xilamuren River. The annual Nadam Fair attracts numerous visitors. Jiufeng Mountain, in the middle section of Yinshan Mountains, consists of nine peaks with its main peak reputed to be the 'lesser Mt. Taishan'. The mountain features jagged rocks of various shapes and tumbling waterfalls. It is a natural scenic area that is rarely seen in the northwest plateaus of China. Located 10km north of the Salaqi Town of Tumote You Qi, Jiufeng Mountain is home to a variety of plant and animal life. Flowers and herbs flourish all over the mountain between summer and autumn.

Xilamuren Grassland in Baotou
Xilamuren Grassland is the earliest grassland to have been developed as a tourism attraction in Inner Mongolia, as well as a famous tourist summer resort. It is a typical plateau of grassland with a chain of undulating hills around it.

Xilamuren Grassland in Hohhot
Xilamuren Grassland is 90 kilometers away from Hohhot City, Inner Mongolia. Xilamuren Grassland covers an area of 1,000 square kilometers, with an altitude of 1,700 meters. Meaning “yellow river” in Mongolian, and some people would like to call it “Zhao River”. Xilamuren Grassland is the earliest grassland to have been developed as a tourism attraction in Inner Mongolia.It is a typical plateau of grassland with a chain of undulating hills around it.
Why is Xilamuren Grassland so special?
It’s famous not only for its vast green grassland, also known as “Zhaohe” because there is a Puhui Temple near the Xilamuren River. Puhui Temple is a lamasery built in the 34th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1769 in the Qing Dynasty), which served as the temporary abode where the Six Living Buddhas at Xilituozhao Palace would spend their summers in meditation. Now it is a complex of three halls with carved ceilings and painted beams. The beautiful Xilamuren River surrounds the temple, presenting a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere.

Take a bus to Maoqi from Hohhot Coach Station, which is next to Hohhot Railway Station, and get off at Xilamuren.
The distance is about 90 kilometers from Xilamuren Grassland to the downtown area of Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia. It takes you no more than 1.5 hours’ drive if you take the express highway.
Useful Travel Tips
What to pack.
Xilamuren Grassland is at an altitude of 1700 meters with strong ultraviolet and changeable weather. You should wear casual cloth and comfortable shoes, pack sunhat, sunglasses, sun cream and light jacket. As there is such a great temperature difference between daytime and night-time, you’d better take your coat and trousers with you when you visit the grassland. At the same time, owning to its changing climate, you’d better get a raincoat ready.
Best Time to Visit Xilamuren Grassland
The best time to visit Xilamuren Grassland is from June to September. When the grassland is green, weather is comfortable with an average temperature of 18℃-21℃.
Naadam Festival is held in July and August of every year, which shows off the brilliant Mongolian culture in the following aspects: singing and dancing, sports, athletics, dresses and diets. Naadam Festival means games and entertainment in Mongolian. During the festival, the whole grassland is throbbing with excitement and full of activities. Enjoy Three Skills of Men – archery, horse racing and wrestling.The fair finishes with a bonfire party during the night when the local Mongolian sing and dance
The recommended specialties include Kumiss, Mongolian Roast Lamb, Cooked Mutton, Mongolia Milk Tea, Finger Mutton, Butter, Sour Milk, Shaomai, Buckwheat Flour etc.
You should follow some rules when you riding a horse to ensure your own safety: When get on/off the horse, don’t touch their crupper; Don’t follow other horses closely and stay in a safe distance; The grassland is vast and follow the route to do horse riding; When the horse is out of control, please catch and tense the rein and yell “Yu, Yu”.

Meaning "yellow river" in Mongolian, the Xilamuren Grassland is the earliest grassland to have been developed as a tourism attraction in Inner Mongolia. Since the site owns fantastic view and is located close to Hohhot, it is very popular for tourists who love nature and grassland in summer.
Xilamuren Grassland highlights
There is a saying reflecting the special climatic changes in the Xilamuren Grassland: "People wear cotton-padded jackets in the morning while they wear gauze clothing at noon. People eat watermelons beside the fireplace at night". There is a great daytime to night-time temperature difference there. You may feel like you are visiting in cool autumn when you are actually there during a summer night.
Nadam Fair is held in late July every year in the Xilamuren Grassland. The festival presents Mongolian culture to the world. During the festival, a lot of traditional Mongolian activities are held, including singing and dancing, sports, athletics, dresses show and food exhibition. Among them, horse racing, wrestling and archery are the "Three Manly Sports" for the Mongolians. Tourists can enjoy the brave Mongolians' excellent performances.
Aobao Activity
Aobao Activity is usually held between late May and early June. Aobao is a kind of small stone mount shaped to conical. On the top of each Aobao there is a prayer flagpole (or religious flagpoles) and colorful flags. When the fiesta is finished, traditional activities are performed, such as horse riding, wrestling and so on.

Xilamuren Grasslands
Xilamuren Grasslands 希拉穆仁草原
The Xilamuren Grasslands are situated in the Darhan Muminggan Joint Banner, Baotou city, Inner Mongolia autonomous region. They are named after the local Xilamuren River, which is Mongolian and translates to a river of yellow color. With an average altitude of 1,700 meters, the grasslands feature a hilly landform and experiences large temperature swings between day and night, making it a world-renowned place to escape the summer heat.
With its construction completed in 1769 during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Puhui Lamasery is a famous cultural spot surrounded by the Xilamuren River. It used to serve as the summer resort of the sixth Living Buddha of the Xilituzhao Lamasery in today’s Hohhot. It boasts a grand scale and delicate Tibetan architectural style through construction and expansions spread over two hundred years.
In summer the grand Nadam Games are held on the Xilamuren Grasslands, making for a vivid picture of indigenous folk customs and the culture of the Mongolian ethnic group.
