How guest reviews work.

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Guidelines and Standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Hotel Review: Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 1

We work to provide the best publicly available offers to our readers. We frequently update them, but this site does not include all available offers.

We took a quick weekend trip to Paris earlier this month. We flew Air France from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) (review here) and went over to our hotel after a crowd-free trip through immigration. For this trip, I wanted to try something different. The past two times I have been in Paris, I stayed at the Westin Paris – Vendôme and since I needed Marriott stays and had never heard of the hotel, I decided on the Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel .

Anthony’s Take: The location of the hotel was alright, but other than the Eiffel Tower we had to take Uber rides. The Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel  is a smaller hotel with 122 rooms and suites. It doesn’t offer many amenities and the rooms are not set up for guests to be able to control the temperature (the room was burning hot and we could not turn on the air conditioner).

Renaissance Booking

I booked a Eiffel Tower View, Junior Suite, 1 King directly from  Marriott.com on a Member Rate Prepay Non-refundable (shown above). If booking the hotel with Bonvoy points, it will cost 55,000-90,000 points per night for a standard room. Rates vary since Marriott eliminated its award buckets.

Renaissance Map

Transportation to/from the Hotel

We took an Uber Premier from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to the Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel. The ride took around 28 minutes to go the 30.6 kilometers and cost around $55. The return trip was a similar cost and time.

The location of this hotel is not the most convenient for sightseeing other than the Eiffel Tower. There was a Starbucks close by, but other than that we took Uber rides everywhere.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 2

We arrived around 10:00 AM. Our suite was ready because I booked the night before to ensure that we would have access to shower and sleep once we arrived (after having been on a transatlantic flight). A few days before arrival, the hotel reached out and tried to downgrade me to a room as there was a technical issue with my suite. I objected and asked them to find me another suite. They found a Family Suite and reserved that for me. I was given breakfast and 1,000 points as a welcome amenity. This Renaissance does not have a lounge and that is why two amenities were provided. We had keys a few moments later and were off to our suite.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 5

There was lots of seating around the lobby.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 9

There were two elevators. Both were fairly slow.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 10

The hallways were rather crowded and dated.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 11

Family Suite, 1 King (415)

Our suite was on the 4th floor out of eight. The hotel has 122 rooms and suites.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 12

There is a half bathroom upon entering the suite. It has a vanity and toilet.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 24

L’Occitane brand soap was on the counter.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 13

A closet was located near the half bath. It held a safe, Nespresso machine, and refrigerator.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 14

The refrigerator was empty and ready for guest use.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 15

The living room was a bit further inside. It had a desk and chair.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 16

Another welcome amenity was on the desk. It consisted of two bottles of orange soda and some cookies.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 17

A couch, chair, and two tables filled the rest of the room.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 18

The bedroom was off of the living room. It had a king-sized bed that was pretty comfortable.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 19

It also held a chair and flat-screen TV. The entire suite was extremely hot and control of the temperature was limited. We had to open the window to regulate the temperature. This made the room unpleasant and it was hot enough that I would not choose to stay at this hotel again in the winter.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 20

There were two closets here. The first held robes, an iron, and ironing board.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 21

The second had the blowdryer, slippers, and laundry bag.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 22

The bathroom door was near the closets. It was rather small with the vanity against the shower. Water pressure and temperature were fine.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 25

Another L’Occitane soap bar was on the counter along with mouthwash.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 26

Wall-mounted lotion was found here.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 27

Shampoo, body wash, and conditioner were found in large bottles mounted in the shower.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 23

I was happy that the toilet was not wedged too close to the shower.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 24

As mentioned above, the breakfast for elite members includes the full buffet in the restaurant found on the lobby level. It was your standard breakfast spread with meats, cheeses, fruit, yogurt, bread, pastries, and several hot options. One standout: the mini berry and chocolate muffins. Load up on these as they are amazing.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 25

The hot items were all held in one area.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 26

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 27

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 28

Assorted cereal and milk

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 29

Additions for cereal and Muesli

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 30

Meat, cheese, vegetables, and smoked fish

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 33

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 32

I ordered a cappuccino and it was quickly brought to the table.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 34

Public Areas & Amenities

The Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel offers lobby seating, a fitness center, and the restaurant listed above. The fitness center is located one level below the lobby. It’s small with limited options.

Renaissance Paris Tour Eiffel 35

Towels were provided.

Overall Impression: The Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel is not in the most convenient location, has limited amenities, and the room was stiflingly hot. I would not return to this hotel unless I had no other option.

Anthony’s Credit Card Pick:  When I’m staying at a Marriott hotel, I want to maximize my points earned. My card of choice is the  Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant ®  American Express ®  Card . With it, I earn six Marriott Bonvoy® points for each dollar spent at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program. It also includes up to $300 statement credits per calendar year (up to $25 per month ) for dining in restaurants worldwide. Did you approach the hotel about the stifling heat in your room? Given the price they should have been doing whatever was necessary to make things right and you can tell more about a property by how they handle problems than when everything is fine IMO.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Wednesday it registered 285 candidates for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize by the Feb. 1 deadline, down from 2023 when it received 351 valid nominations.

The names of the 196 individuals and 89 organizations were not released, in accordance with committee practice.

Last year, the Nobel Institute received 351 valid nominations — 259 individuals and 92 organizations. The Oslo-based committee said the highest number ever received was in 2016 when they got 376 candidates.

A vast group of people can submit a nomination for the prize: heads of state or politicians serving at a national level, university professors, directors of foreign policy institutes, past Nobel Prize recipients and members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

However, those doing the nominating may choose to make it public, raising publicity both for the nominee and the proposer.

For this year, entries include peace activists connected to the wars in Gaza and Ukraine among others .

Academics at the Free University Amsterdam have nominated the Middle East-based organizations EcoPeace, Women Wage Peace and Women of the Sun for peace efforts between Israelis and Palestinians.

The International Peace Bureau, which won the prize in 1910, said it had nominated The Russian Movement of Conscientious Objectors and The Ukrainian Pacifist Movement for their commitment to the protection of conscientious objectors to violence, particularly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Belarusian organization Our House, was also nominated for the same reason.

The 2023 prize was given to imprisoned Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi for campaigning for women’s rights and democracy in her country. Her teenage children accepted the award on her behalf.

The peace prize and the other Nobel Prizes are handed out on Dec. 10, the anniversary of prize founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896.

L egendary musician Bob Dylan , a recipient of 10 Grammys, a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Peace Prize, remains an unstoppable force in his remarkable 65-year career. At 82 years old, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee recently announced plans for yet another tour, Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour.

Scheduled to take place from March 1-18, Dylan will play 12 concerts in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. While it is uncertain if these shows will mark the conclusion of the tour—as the announcement poster hints at its continuation from 2021 to 2024—no additional dates have been revealed at this time.

Dylan’s tour initially began in November 2021.

Born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, Dylan was originally known as Bob Zimmerman. In his time at the University of Minnesota, he became captivated by the folk singer Woody Guthrie and started to perform at coffee houses near the university campus. In this transformative period, he decided to change his last name to Dylan, a tribute to the poet Dylan Thomas and a symbol of his artistic evolution and aspirations.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dylan shattered preconceived notions with his demonstration that songs with overtly political themes could still achieve remarkable commercial success. His timeless music continues to resonate with audiences today, just as powerfully as it did when he first recorded them several decades ago.

With tens of millions of albums sold, over 500 songs penned and recorded by more than 2,000 artists and a global presence on stages across the world, Dylan has set an unmatched standard for the art of lyric writing.

The quick version. It's close to the effiel tower, but still it's a 10-15 minute walk away. Part of Marriott so you can probably book with points. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms not that clean and bed hard as a rock. Where to start? We had higher expectations for this hotel. We booked with points so we got a good redemption. This hotel is close to the effiel tower, but there are other hotels namely a best Western that was much closer. The neighborhood otherwise is quiet and not many shops or restaurants. The hotel was full so there were no upgrades available. We got checked in fast and the the staff helped with our luggage. The room was normal size for Europe. The ac didn't get that cold even at the lowest setting of 17c. This was during a heatwave when it was close to 37-38c everyday. Still better then no ac. The air vent was very dirty. Looked like nobody had cleaned it for months. I get a little bit of build up but this was caked on. The bed was hard as a rock and lumpy. The kind of bed you expect at a roadside motel 6 maybe, not at a hotel that was charging 400 euros a night. The only reason we didn't move was because it was summer and we didn't want to move everything to another hotel. The rest of the room was clean but still I could see dirt buildup in the corners. The full breakfast included with our stay was sub par. I get it, the French don't normally eat big breakfasts. But this was by the far the worst one we had during our almost 3 week trip in Europe. The fruit was fresh and the eggs were ok. The rest was barely better then a Fairfield inn breakfast. Again I usually pay around 100-150 for Fairfield inns. Staff was pretty friendly and helpful. Concierge helped us book lunch. This was one of the few good points for this hotel is the staff. In conclusion I would probably find another hotel to stay at. If the price is low enough and you want to be near the effiel tower and are a Marriott loyalist then maybe it's worth it? Otherwise I don't think it's worth it.

Liked the hotel but would not recommend it. The Hotel is well situated, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Great breakfast including gluten free options that I appreciated. Overall, we were well pleased with the hotel. The problem came after our trip. At the time of booking, I made a reservation for 2 nights for a queen size room. I then added an additional night choosing the king size room with breakfast included. When we checked in, it was under the reservation for the king size room. We asked if we could stay for all 3 nights in that room combining the two reservations. The front desk person said, no problem, they had already moved the reservation for all 3 nights to that room. When our credit card statement came, we had a charge for 122 euros from the hotel, charged during our stay (but not on our receipt). Marriott US logged a ticket for us and sent it to the hotel. The hotel said it was a room upgrade charge. This took us totally by surprise. Through back-and-forth exchanges, the hotel has not relented. So, we are stuck paying this charge that was not approved. It has totally ruined my experience at this hotel, and I cannot recommend it. Go into it with your eyes open that you could be a victim of unscrupulous management at this hotel. Marriott USA customer service is totally helpless when dealing with Marriott hotels overseas. You are left to your own devices trying to contact the hotel and work out any issues. This has happened to us twice, for hotels in Cairo and in Paris. This hotel chain has gotten way too big and dysfunctional.

One of the most ok hotels I've ever stayed at in Paris. Rooms are nice, location is grand. A but spread out and inconvenient.

I had planned the trip of a lifetime for me and my mom.  We were going to France!  We had reservations for 7 days at the Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel, which we knew was a four star hotel. We arrived at the hotel on Saturday, April 8th, and were checked in without any major problems. We received two keys to room 363 in a building that was toward the back of the property.  Apparently they have several different buildings that are a part of the hotel.  There was walkway construction going on and we had to be careful rolling our luggage because the wheels were getting stuck.  The walkway was 90% completed by the time we  checked out. We were there for the whole repair. It rained almost daily during our stay and the taped down plastic covering they placed over the decking leading to our building was slippery.  My 73 year old mother could not walk on this covering and risk falling, so we walked a longer distance to get to our building. We got to room 363, unlocked and opened the door. The disappointment I felt was overwhelming. The room was barely big enough to hold a queen size bed, 2 night stands, a small sitting table with ONE chair, a table with a TV, and a small armoire with a coffee maker and a mini fridge inside. Squeezing in all of our luggage made for very tight living quarters. We were exhausted from flying all night and just wanted to rest a bit.  This would have to do for now. I tried to settle in and plugged in my outlet adapter and proceeded to use it.  The power went out immediately.  I called down to the front desk and someone was sent to reset the circuit breaker/fuse. With the power back on, we figured we'd get showered and rest a bit.  The shower.......was a nightmare.  The drain catch wasn't working properly and the shower flooded the bathroom floor.  The partition to keep the water  in was a joke. I used up all the extra towels mopping up the floor.  We called the front desk again.  Someone else was sent up to check the shower.  The worker fixed the drain so that the catch worked properly and told us that that's how the shower works as far as the water going everywhere.  I have NEVER heard of such. I was frustrated with the room and I knew I was going to ask to be switched.  There were other issues with the room.  I may as well address them all here.  The sink also leaked.  Water would leak around the faucets and then start leaking and pooling over the counter top.  The television greeted me every single day with Welcome Mr. Brandon Azad. I saw all of his daily charges. I asked the front desk about it. They acted like this wasn't a big deal.  I also asked about another room.  There were no rooms to switch to is what they said. Three days later, I was offered another room that was supposed to be better in another building.  The room was MUCH better, but it was on the 3rd floor with NO elevators. This was not going to work. I was not going to expect my mother to have to walk up those stairs nor was I trying to haul our luggage up and down. They offered to have someone do all of that, but I knew that was going to be a problem having to wait indefinitely when we needed to move the luggage.  Also, we wanted to make a cup of coffee. We tried to use the coffee machine, only to find that there was nowhere to plug it in in the armoire.  The mini fridge must have had access through a hole somewhere in the back.  In order to make coffee we had to plug the pot in on the floor because the cord on the coffee pot was too short to even sit on the small table and reach the outlet.  As I look at the daily charges for the room and the quality of the accommodations, I feel cheated.  I thought I was paying extra for the attention to details...those little things that set a 4 star hotel apart from a 1 or 2 star hotel.  The hotel you choose is important because this is your home away from home.  Had I known that the accommodations were going to be this disappointing , I would have never agreed to this reservation. Everyday my mom and I went out to enjoy the sites of the city, only to dread coming back to the room where we had to endure tight living conditions, and a crappy shower.  It was hard trying to keep a happy face for my mom when I felt like I let her down. I talked up this fantastic trip and 4 star accommodations, only to let her down. She told me that it was okay, but it WASN'T. This was NOT the trip I planned. My dream trip turned into a "let's make the best of it."  Maybe it was the language barrier, but this situation wasn't handled the way it should have been handled.  I am very disappointed. I have NO desire to EVER return to the Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel hotel.  My 4-star experience never happened.  My advice to anyone considering making reservations here is to inquire about the specifics of the room you will be staying in. Room 363 will always be remembered.

My wife and I stayed here on our first trip to Paris and we're very happy with our hotel choice. The hotel has a boutique feel to it as it is small (only 6 rooms on our floor), the room was clean, and the staff was excellent. On the car ride in, our driver said that we are less than 5 minutes walk to the Eiffel Tower, which was fantastic. walking out of the hotel either left or fight, there were plenty restaurants choices and pastry shops. we ate at 3 of the restaurants and we're not disappointed. there is a laundry mat, pharmacy and small store within a minute walk. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Hotel is ok. HOWEVER don't try to get any Sleep if you have an inner courtyard room as the overpriced restaurant in the courtyard plays loud music u til 2 AM. Not worth the overpriced room charge.

Location location location! Tiny boutique hotel situated perfectly from all high points of paris. We are so so glad we stayed here for 4 nights! 20 min walk from most of the major sites: -Arc de triomph -Champs-Élysées -Eiffel tower -5 min between two Metro stations to get you to all other sites around paris in 20 min. Uber: we had to wait no more than 5-6 min day or night and found it soo much easier and a time saver vs finding the metro and getting lost. -all cars were really nice (all high end) You are also in what it seems to be a yuppy areas so we found it full of locals, working professionals, restaurants 5-10 min walk in any direction. -minimal youngster shenanigans (mostly 28+over) walking their dogs morning and night. There is great shopping right down the street about 10 min and then 8 min past that is shopping mecca Champs-Élysées. Also Quiet!! At night... which is awesome! -our room had a view of the Eiffel which was super cool. Very friendly service... front desk and restaurant staff speak english. Rooms are small as expected in Paris and a bit dated but VERY clean. We had breakfast each morning (im a marriott gold so free... awesome!) -they will make you eggs upon request -the croissants are made daily and worth busting your skinny no carb jeans open for! -the "american coffee" served is pretty terrible.. ask for a "cafe creme" ahhh.. french coffee. All in all we would be back here over and over again. Well done guys!!!

We stayed here for a few days prior to our Seine River cruise. The property is centrally located to many great restaurants, the Metro, and shopping. In addition, you are within walking distance to the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower. As part of our package we were treated to a buffet breakfast that had an amazing selection of pastries, hot foods, and meats and cheeses. There is a unique garden in the middle of the property, which hosted several parties while we were there. The bar is very small, but well stocked. The garden was wonderful just sit and enjoy some peace and quiet after a long day of touring. The rooms were surprisingly large and well appointed. The staff was very friendly and attended to our every request in a timely manner.

Bed was very comfortable with lots of room.

I decided to write this while sitting here in the room in the bed staring out my window watching the wind blow. (sounds like a book) lol / This place is great, when I come back it'll be here in this same room. The staff is amazing, it's quiet, and clean. I love how it's set up with the lights by the bed as well as the bathroom. The mirror and the shower in there was well thought of. Though I didn't get a chance to eat at the restaurant or order room service my stay here was well worth it. I check out in a few hours, who knows I may have time to stop by there.

What a terrible restaurant in this hotel. We have been waiting 20 minutes for service. Meanwhile, three employees behind the bar are conversing with one another. We are not the only ones who are not getting service-everyone is being ignored. I would have imagined that an expensive, fancy hotel like this would offer better service. Very disappointing. I absolutely do not recommend this restaurant. We are not staying at this hotel so I cannot comment on that - just on the restaurant.

Russian activist from Nobel-winning organization gets prison term

nobel tour

MOSCOW — Prominent Russian activist Oleg Orlov, a leader of the Memorial human rights organization that jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, was sentenced to 2½ years in prison Tuesday for denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Orlov, 70, a veteran human rights campaigner who worked as a hostage negotiator during the first Chechen war in the 1990s, was initially fined $1,630 for “discrediting the armed forces” for an article in which he branded Russia a “fascist” regime and said that the army was committing “mass murder.” When he appealed the ruling, a Moscow court slapped him with a more severe sentence.

The new penalty comes amid an expanding crackdown on Russia’s pro-democracy activists and the death of the country’s most prominent one, Alexei Navalny , who died suddenly earlier this month in an Arctic prison colony. Navalny’s spokeswoman said Tuesday that no venue would agree to host the activist’s funeral this week.

Navalny’s lawyer, Vasily Dubkov, was briefly detained by police Tuesday evening, the Verstka news outlet reported. The reasons for his detention remain unclear.

Hundreds of people were arrested last week for laying flowers at memorials for Navalny that sprung up across the country. On Tuesday morning, police detained several Muscovites days after they laid flowers at a memorial as they were leaving their homes for work.

For many young Russians, dreams of democracy died with Alexei Navalny

Orlov’s sentencing is the latest example of Russian authorities meting out harsher sentences to those who appeal their charges. Earlier this month, Boris Kagarlitsky, a prominent sociologist, was sentenced to five years in prison for criticizing the war in Ukraine — after a court initially ordered him only to pay a $6,500 fine.

In a stirring speech ahead of Tuesday’s sentencing, Orlov read from Franz Kafka’s “The Trial” and said he had “nothing to regret or repent for.”

“A word to you, your honor, and to the prosecution: Aren’t you yourselves afraid? You probably also love our country; aren’t you afraid to witness what it’s turning into?” Orlov said to the judge. “Aren’t you afraid that not only you and your children but, God forbid, your grandchildren also will have to live in this absurdity, in this dystopia?”

Orlov recounted that when he wrote the article over a year ago, friends had accused him of blowing things out of proportion. Now, he said, the situation facing the country was “blatantly clear.”

“The state has become all-pervasive,” he continued. “It’s been only a little over four months since my first trial ended, and in that time, many things happened that illustrate how rapidly our country is sinking ever more deeply into darkness.”

Orlov also noted that his trial began on the day the world learned that Navalny had died, and he described how the “killing of Alexei,” the repression of freedom, the sentencing of regime critics and the invasion of Ukraine were all “links in the same chain.”

Navalny’s wife, family and colleagues have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering a state-sponsored murder of Navalny, his greatest challenger and critic.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny’s spokeswoman, tweeted Tuesday that even after Navalny’s family had finally reclaimed his body from authorities, no place would host a funeral because of government pressure.

“Since yesterday we have been looking for a site where we can say farewell to Alexei,” she wrote. “Some places say the space is busy, some places refuse upon mention of the name ‘Navalny.’ In one place we were directly told that funeral agencies were prohibited from working with us.”

On Monday, an aide for Navalny said he had been killed in connection with negotiations for a prisoner swap between Russia and Germany.

Aide to Navalny says prisoner swap was in the works before his death

Navalny’s death has served a crushing blow to an already demoralized and fractured Russian opposition, most of whom fled into exile following the invasion of Ukraine or were swept up into prisons across the country, generally for their criticism of the war or past activism.

After the verdict, Orlov calmly offered his wrists to be cuffed by waiting officers, picked up his packed bag and passport, and embraced friends and supporters. Those present applauded him.

Alexandra Popova, a human rights activist and an associate of Orlov who attended the sentencing in Moscow, described the atmosphere inside the courtroom as moving. Once the verdict was passed, some wept, she said.

“Oleg’s sentence is monstrous … and it shows that the state does not spare anyone,” she said. “He is very stoic … but naturally his arrest is causing a lot of fears about how he will endure this imprisonment because he is an elderly person, and this is terribly painful.”

Popova said Orlov’s sentencing was especially sensitive given that it fell on the anniversary of the death of Boris Nemtsov , an opposition leader who was gunned down outside the Kremlin in 2015.

On Tuesday, dozens of people laid flowers at the bridge where Nemtsov was killed, including several foreign ambassadors.

Roger Guillemin, 100, Nobel-Winning Scientist Stirred by Rivalries, Dies

In the race to identify the hormones used to control bodily functions, he battled with his former partner. They later shared the glory.

A black and white photo of a scientist at work behind a large piece of lab equipment consisting of multiple banks of transparent tubes. He is balding, has short dark hair and wears eyeglasses and a white lab coat.

By Nicholas Wade

Roger Guillemin, a neuroscientist who was a co-discoverer of the unexpected hormones with which the brain controls many bodily functions, died on Wednesday at a senior living facility in San Diego. He was 100.

His death was confirmed by his daughter Chantal Guillemin.

Dr. Guillemin’s career was marked by two spectacular competitions that ruffled the staid world of endocrinological research. The first was a 10-year tussle with his former partner, Andrew V. Schally , which ended in a draw when the two shared half of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1977 . (The other half went to the American medical physicist Rosalyn Yalow for unrelated research.)

The second competition began shortly afterward when Wylie Vale Jr. , Dr. Guillemin’s longtime collaborator and protégé, set up a rival laboratory on the same campus at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, where both men worked, plunging Dr. Guillemin into yet another period of intense scientific struggle.

Roger Charles Louis Guillemin (pronounced, with a hard g, GEE-eh-mah) might have pursued a quiet career as a family doctor in the French city of Dijon, the Burgundy region’s capital, where he was born on Jan. 11, 1924, and where he went to public schools and then medical school. But a chance meeting with Hans Selye , an expert on the body’s reaction to stress, took him to Montreal, where he was introduced to medical research at Dr. Selye’s newly created Institute of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal.

There he became interested in a leading problem of the day — that of how the brain controls the pituitary gland, the maestro organ that cues production of the body’s other major glands.

The pituitary sits in a small pocket of bone just under a central brain region called the hypothalamus. No one could find any nerves linking the hypothalamus to the pituitary, so a fallback conjecture was that the hypothalamus might control the pituitary with hormones. But many biologists refused to believe that the brain might produce hormones like a mere gland.

The postulated hormones were called releasing factors, because they arguably made the pituitary release its own hormones.

In 1954, Dr. Guillemin made a critical observation: Pituitary cells cultured in glassware would not produce any hormones unless cells of the hypothalamus were cultured with them. The finding supported the idea of releasing factors, and Dr. Guillemin was determined to prove it. He moved to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he tried to isolate the postulated releasing factors from the hypothalami of cattle killed in a kosher slaughterhouse.

Success eluded him, and in 1957 he teamed up with another young researcher, Andrzej V. Schally, known as Andrew. The two worked together for five years, but the mysterious releasing factors foiled their best efforts. The partnership broke up. Dr. Schally moved to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in New Orleans. Dr. Guillemin eventually hired two key researchers at Baylor — Dr. Vale as a physiologist and Roger Burgus as a chemist — who were to be the mainstays of his efforts for the next 10 years.

Working independently, Dr. Guillemin and Dr. Schally both decided that they needed much larger numbers of hypothalami in order to extract sufficient amounts of releasing factor. Each turned his laboratory into a semi-industrial processing plant, aided by liberal government research funds that were made available after the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik, the first artificial space satellite, in 1957. Dr. Guillemin eventually processed more than two million sheep hypothalami, and Dr. Schally worked on the same scale with pig brains.

The rivalry between the two teams was intense, especially in matters of scientific credit. “Let me also remind you,” Dr. Schally wrote to Dr. Guillemin in a letter in 1969, “of your deliberate, repeated and personal scientific attacks against me as well as your constant failure to recognize our contributions.”

Dr. Schally later told an interviewer, “An equal partner I could be with him, but he wanted me to be his slave.”

The releasing factors exist in such minute amounts in the brain that they were barely detectable by the techniques of the day. A single fingerprint left on glassware contained enough amino acids — the components of releasing factors — to ruin a whole experiment. After a further seven years of effort, neither Dr. Guillemin nor Dr. Schally had isolated a releasing factor. Other researchers said that the government, which had been funding the two men’s work for years, should cease wasting its money. There was more evidence for the Loch Ness monster, they said.

In 1969, the committee of scientists that advised the National Institutes of Health on endocrinology research convened a meeting to prepare for cutting off support to the two laboratories. But a few days before the meeting, Dr. Burgus made a significant advance toward identifying the chemical structure of the releasing factor that controls the thyroid gland via the pituitary. Within a few months, the Schally and the Guillemin teams had fully identified the releasing factor, known as TRF, and the funding cutoff was averted.

A race now began to find a second releasing factor, FRF, which controlled the body’s reproductive systems. Dr. Schally’s team was narrowly first, but Dr. Guillemin then recouped by discovering a releasing factor involved in control of the body’s growth.

Dr. Guillemin succeeded because he had identified a critical problem that he and Dr. Schally had pursued against daunting odds while better known researchers had failed. Identification of the releasing factors was a major event in medicine, and the Nobel committee in Stockholm duly awarded its prize for the achievement.

Dr. Guillemin had little time to rest on his laurels. His research team had become disenchanted with his relentless search for scientific glory. Dr. Vale later complained of “what hell it can sometimes be for people who get caught up in the meat grinder, churning out more and more gloire for Guillemin, especially if you are the meat.”

Dr. Vale set up his own laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1977 (Dr. Guillemin had established one there in 1970), and endocrinologists were treated to the spectacle of yet another furious rivalry, this time between Dr. Guillemin and his protégé. They competed to find the releasing factors known as CRF, which is involved in stress, and GRF, which spurs growth. Both succeeded, though Dr. Vale’s lab was first in each case.

Dr. Guillemin in 1951 married Lucienne Jeanne Billard, who had been his nurse during an almost fatal attack of tubercular meningitis in Montreal. She died in 2021, also at 100.

In addition to his daughter Chantal, he is survived by four other daughters, Hélène Guillemin Weiss, Cece Chambless, and Claire and Elisabeth Guillemin; a son, François; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Guillemin and Dr. Vale later reconciled and became close friends. In a tribute at Dr. Vale’s 65th birthday, Dr. Guillemin, well aware of the irony of competing with his “scientific son,” quoted Freud’s analysis of the Oedipus myth: “Part of any son worth his salt is planning the killing of the father he loves and taking his kingdom.”

Excellent stay with fantastic concierge

We just returned from a great six-night stay at this hotel. Our room was in the building behind the lobby which made it really quiet--no street noise. The room was updated and clean. The neighborhood is not the most central for Paris, but it is super nice and safe--lots of restaurants and cafes within 10 minutes walking distance. The highlight of our stay was working with the hotel's concierge--Gael and his team, including Lea and Lisa, were some of the best I've ever worked with. We communicated extensively before our arrival (always receiving prompt and thorough responses from Gael and team), and upon our arrival, all of our reservations and tickets that the concierge had coordinated were well-organized and waiting for us. The concierge team at this hotel is truly a gem, such a pleasure to work with, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. More

Very warm welcome, the hotel reached out ahead of our arrival to confirm arrival information. We had 3 rooms booked, a garden view room and two standard rooms. They upgraded the two standard rooms to garden view, which are slightly bigger, without asking. Plus, I asked if 1 of the rooms could be ready before standard check-in and they were able to make it happen. Upon entering the rooms there was a welcome gift of desserts, a bottle of red wine, along with a nice note. The rooms are small but very comfortable beds. Good night sleep, no street noise. The bathroom was of good size, the only downside was there was no outlet in the bathroom for the hairdryer, had to dry my hair in the room. The outlet in the bathroom is low voltage for a razor only. We had the breakfast buffet each morning and it was decent. Scrambled Eggs or made to order, bacon, toast, yogurt, cereal, cheese, etc. The location was on a quiet residential street between 2 metro stations (Victor Hugo and Trocadro), a 5 min walk in either direction. Plenty of restaurants around both metro stations. As you walk towards the Trocadro you can see the Eiffel Tower. Great staff, everyone was pleasant and had a smile. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend

So many to thank in this hotel. The moment we arrived at 9 am. I knew our room wouldn’t be ready just yet. The Fabulous ladies of the front desk, Ashma, Fiona, Osna, were all very pleasant. They offered us breakfast as we wait for the first available room to be ready. We got a room shortly after breakfast. The staff at the breakfast area were also very accommodating with our request for espresso, latte, and other custom drinks. We asked to be moved to a different room because I didn’t want to spend the next 4 nights in an accessible room. They were happy to oblige. Navigator Gael and Lea were also fabulous in assisting in booking last-minute dinner cruises, French cooking classes, and incredible restaurants. Overall, this hotel and its staff were excellent at their roles. We smiled and laugh each time we see each other in the lobby. Thank you for making this stay a memorable one.

Dear Iamwashington8, Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to leave us this comment, we are pleased to hear you have been satisfied with your stay at our hotel and that you enjoyed your Parisian experience. What a wonderful stay! From the check-in, with Osna that have made me feel like I was at home to Fiona who help me with all my question, all the staff is more than amazing! The room is very well laid out with plenty of storage space and is very clean. Finally, the location of the hotel is really an asset as we are close to all the tourist areas such as the Champs-Élysées, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the quays of the Seine... In short, an unforgettable stay that I highly recommend.

I went to the hotel with a friend to enjoy the neighborhood. First thing first, we got welcomed by the navigator before bringing us to the front desk. There we got check in by the staff that evening, both receptionist were very sweet and friendly and helped me set up my Marriott account. I was given a very nice and specious room with a view on the Eiffel Tower on one of the high floor. The bed was huge and comfy. We had a very nice cocktail in the little bar in the lobby before ordering food straight to the room. Breakfast was also very nice, lots and lots of cold and warm options and a great selection of juices options. Once again for the checkout the staff was very friendly and helpful ! I will definitely come back there.

Dear Edouard, We would like to thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us, and we are glad you were satisfied with your stay at our hotel. We can't wait to have you back here soon ! - The Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel team

We stayed here for 2 nights before and after a trip to Reims. We chose this hotel as we thought it was a new Marriott and after traveling to Paris a few times we thought we would give it a try. Apparently the hotel is not new but has a new name. It was formerly the Marriott Trocadero. The staff is friendly but the location was a bit off the beaten path for us. The rooms were fine. The last 2 nights we stayed we were given room 172 that smelled like smoke the minute we walked in so we asked to be moved. The front desk staff graciously gave us a different room that was fine. The breakfast at this hotel is great with lots of options. However, know this hotel does not have a lot of amenities. There is no business center or concierge lounge. Not usually a big deal but I had to join a meeting that was at midnight in the Paris timezone. As I didn’t want to wake my partner I went to the lobby. There was a man sleeping on one of the couches and it wasn’t conducive to a business meeting.

Dear SABB802, We would like to thank you for choosing our hotel for your stay, and for taking the time to share your experience with us. Please rest assured that your feedback has been shared with our staff to help improve our service. We hope to have you back soon in Paris with an improved experience. - The Renaissance Paris Nobel Tour Eiffel Hotel team
