Key takeaways

Deciding what van layout to choose is one of the most difficult decisions of a build.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

If you choose a fixed bed, you give up the highly useful daytime area a convertible bed provides…

If you choose a convertible bed, you lose garage space and basically have to make camp every night…

So what’s the best layout?

In this post, you’ll find a detailed description of every popular van layout – as well as its benefits and drawbacks.

By the end of this article, you’ll have a great understanding of what van layout is right for you.

But First… 6 Important Factors To Consider When Choosing A Van Layout

There’s a reason why almost every van has a unique layout.

What works for one person may not work so well for someone else (in other words, the ideal layout varies depending on your needs ) .

So, in order to help you navigate one of the most difficult decisions of vanlife , we’ve put together a list of the 6 main factors to consider when deciding what van layout to choose.

1. The Size of Your Van

Size plays an integral role in the kind of campervan layout you can have. Generally, the larger the van is, the more amenities you can enjoy. On the flip side, if you have a small van, lack of space is obviously a downside so it’s best to choose a camper van floor plan layout that maximizes space (such as one that combines the bedroom and living room).

2. Making Your Bed

Making your bed is an important (yet neglected) element to consider when picking a layout. Some camper van floor plan layouts have tricky bed set-ups that complicate the typically simple chore of making a bed. For example, if you pick a layout with a Murphy bed or pull-out couch, you should be prepared to assemble the bed every day.

3. The Number of People and Pets

When searching for the best van layout, it’s essential to consider the number of people (and pets) in your van. For example, if you’re traveling with your spouse and children, you’ll want a layout that offers multiple sleeping solutions. Ultimately, the layout should provide enough room for everyone to sleep and live comfortably.

4. Room For Entertainment

Do you want to invite friends or family to hang out in your van? If so, you need a van home layout that has space for entertaining guests. It doesn’t need to include a designated entertainment room — many layouts feature multi-functional rooms (such as entertainment spaces that double as living rooms).

5. How Often You Cook

A kitchen is an important part of many DIY camper van layout plans. By installing a kitchen , vanlifers can enjoy fresh, homemade meals right in their vehicles. On the downside, kitchens take up quite a bit of space. If you don’t cook very often, you might be better off with a small kitchen, or even no kitchen at all.

6. Bathroom

There are many van bathroom set-ups available, from simple, portable toilets to full-fledged bathrooms with showers. If you’re traveling off-the-grid and would prefer a more comfortable lifestyle, a camper van layout with a bathroom is probably worth the extra cost and effort. However, if you’re constantly around public restrooms, you may not need a bathroom at all. It’s up to you to decide which amenities you can (and can’t) live without.

So… What Is The Best Van Layout? (20 Best Van Layouts)

Coming up with the perfect layout for a cargo van is easier said than done. To help you find inspiration, we’ve assembled a list of 20 van conversion layout ideas organized by type.

Van Layouts with Murphy Beds

The first type of camper van interior layout on our list is those with Murphy beds . This set-up involves a bed that can be folded up against the wall when not in use. Although Murphy beds aren’t the most comfortable sleeping solutions, they’re great if you need to conserve space.

1) Murphy Bed with Lots of Countertop Space and a Farmhouse Sink

Murphy Bed with Lots of Countertop Space and a Farmhouse Sink

This vanlife floor plan layout makes the most out of small spaces by featuring an L-shaped couch underneath the Murphy bed. During the day, you can enjoy a space for entertainment and relaxation — then, once nighttime hits, pull the bed down over the couch. Right next to the bed are countertops and a farmhouse sink.

Best for:  Saving space

2) Murphy Bed with Work Space Underneath

Murphy Bed with Work Space Underneath

When it comes to small camper van layout ideas, you won’t find many set-ups more popular than this one. Underneath the bed is a small table and bench that fits two people. You can use it as a work space for completing remote jobs if you have internet in your van , an area for relaxation or a miniature dining room. This layout also features rear shelves which are great for storing tools and other gear.

Best for:  Remote workers

3) Murphy Bed with an Open Floor Plan

Murphy Bed with an Open Floor Plan

If you’re looking for open space, this camper van layout plan is the one for you. When the bed is folded, there’s plenty of clear floor space (which is perfect for storing camping gear). Of course, these items will need to be moved when you want to use the bed.

Best for:  Light traveling

4) Fold Away Murphy Bed with One-Wall Kitchen

Fold Away Murphy Bed with One-Wall Kitchen

Sleeping in a kitchen might seem like a strange concept, but it’s actually pretty popular among vanlifers. In this van camper layout, a fold-away bed can be assembled directly over the kitchen countertops. Although this isn’t a traditional Murphy bed, it functions the same way and saves tons of space by combining a kitchen and bedroom.

Best for:  Saving space and cooking

Convertible Bed Van Layouts

The next small camper van layout idea in our guide is convertible bed layouts. Convertible beds can be folded into a bench or sofa when not in use, essentially functioning as two furniture items in one. While they may not be as luxurious as traditional beds, they maximize space and are a step above Murphy beds in terms of comfort.

5) Convertible Bed to U-Shaped Dinette

Convertible Bed to U-Shaped Dinette

Whether you want to entertain guests or enjoy meals with family, a U-shaped dinette area is a great amenity to have. While it’s designed for eating, you can utilize the space for virtually anything (such as reading, writing or doing work). At night, just remove the foam cushions that double as your vans mattress and pull out the bed.

Best for:  Hosting guests

6) Convertible Bed to Double Large Couches With Lots of Storage

Convertible Bed to Double Large Couches With Lots of Storage

Anyone who needs extra storage space will benefit from this van layout. The front consists of the kitchen, while the back features the bed and couch conversion. The double couch set-up is great for relaxation and hosting guests. As an added perk, the wooden furniture (which supports the couch and bed) doubles as a storage container.

Best for:  Storing gear

7) Convertible Bed with Large Seating Area

Convertible Bed with Large Seating Area

Living in a van doesn’t have to be cramped or uncomfortable. For instance, take this campervan layout — it provides tons of space, from a large seating area to overhead kitchen cabinets . Best of all, it doesn’t exclude any essential amenities. The seats can turn into a bed, and the front of the vehicle offers a small kitchen area. For more pictures, follow @asobolife on Instagram.

Best for:  Hosting multiple amenities

8) Convertible Dinette with Huge Bed and a Wet Bath

Convertible Dinette with Huge Bed and a Wet Bath

If sleep is a major priority for you, this convertible dinette van layout may be what you’re looking for. The cozy dinette area (which is located in the back) folds out into a comfortable, double bed. Along with a large bed, the layout comes with a wet bath. Ultimately, it provides luxury and conserves space at the same time.

Best for:  Luxurious travelers

9) Simple Convertible Couch to Bed with Minimalist Amenities

Simple Convertible Couch to Bed with Minimalist Amenities

This set-up is one of the simplest campervan layout ideas on our list. It features just one room with a fold-out couch and storage cabinets. While it may be small, it provides enough room for storing gear and relaxing. It’s best for single vanlifers who can get by with the bare minimum.

Best for:  Solo travelers

Van Layouts with Bunk Beds

The third van layout we’re going to cover is layouts with bunk beds. Instead of taking up floor room, this set-up utilizes vertical space by stacking beds on top of each other. It’s a great solution for vanlifers with kids (or anyone who wants two separate beds). On the downside, bunk beds are difficult to install, which means you might need professional assistance.

10) Bunk Bed with Dinette Underneath

Bunk Bed with Dinette Underneath

This concept combines the benefits of bunk beds and convertible beds. The top bunk, which is installed along the walls, remains stationary. Meanwhile, the bottom bunk can be folded into a cozy dinette area for enjoying meals.

Best for:  Couples or families with kids

11) Small Kids Bunk Beds Across From Kitchen and Convertible Bed in the Back

Small Kids Bunk Beds Across From Kitchen and Convertible Bed in the Back

Hosting a family of four in a van is made easy with this unique set-up. One sleeping solution (the bunk bed) is situated directly across the van kitchen, while the other (a convertible bed) is located in the back of the van.

Best  f or:  Families with kids

12) Kids Bunk Bed with Seating and a Small Kitchen

Kids Bunk Bed with Seating and a Small Kitchen

Families looking for a roomy van layout that will accommodate their travel needs should consider this model. Rather than use two same-sized beds, the bunk bed features a small bed stacked over a full-sized one. The bottom bunk, which can be used for seating, comes with storage space and is located next to a small kitchen. Overall, it can comfortably seat three to four people.

Best for:  Families who travel often

Platform Fixed Bed Van Layouts

A fixed platform bed is one of the closest things you’ll find to a traditional, residential bed. It consists of a stationary bed that’s permanently fixed to the van (typically to an elevated platform). Compared to other models, it’s rather comfortable — plus, there’s no daily assembly required. However, it takes up more space than Murphy, convertible and bunk beds.

13) Fixed Bed Over Kids Play Area with Small Kitchen and Gear Storage

Fixed Bed Over Kids Play Area with Small Kitchen and Gear Storage

You may not be able to fold a fixed bed along the wall or transform it into a couch, but you can make the most out of the space underneath. This van layout places a fixed bed over a small children’s play area. There’s still plenty of space left over for a kitchen and gear storage.

Best for:  Families with kids

14) Fixed Platform Bed with Compartment Storage

Fixed Platform Bed with Compartment Storage

This van layout optimizes space through the power of elevation. The platform bed is installed in the back of the vehicle, along the upper portion of the wall. Underneath the bed is shelf space for storing gear. The bed is easily accessible from the front of the van, while the supplies can be reached from the back.

15) Fixed Platform Bed with Slide-Out Bike Storage, Seating and a Full Kitchen

Fixed Platform Bed with Slide-Out Bike Storage, Seating and a Full Kitchen

If you’re worried about bumping your head on the bottom of a platform bed, this van conversion layout solves that pesky problem for you. The storage space under the bed can actually slide out of the van, allowing for easy access to bicycles (or anything else you want to put on the platform). In front of the bed is a small couch and a full kitchen (which comes with a sink, fridge and three burners).

Best for:  Avid travelers

16) Fixed Platform Bed Over Fridge with a Two-Person Workspace and Wet Bath

Fixed Platform Bed Over Fridge with a Two-Person Workspace and Wet Bath

This campervan layout provides a sleeping solution, storage space and kitchen appliances all in one convenient furniture item. The top features the bed, while the bottom hosts a small fridge (accessible from the inside) and storage containers (accessible from the outside). Right next to this set-up is a cozy workspace that can accommodate two people, as well as a wet bath.

Best for:  Couples who travel frequently

17) Fixed Bed with Gear Storage, Seating and a Kitchen Skylight

Fixed Bed with Gear Storage, Seating and a Kitchen Skylight

If you like unique designs that optimize natural light, this van layout is for you. Unlike most set-ups, this one features a skylight in the kitchen, letting sunlight illuminate the space. It also comes with your standard amenities, such as benches, fixed beds and storage space.

Layouts with Bathrooms

Bathrooms take up a lot of room, but — for some vanlifers — they’re an absolute-must. If you can’t imagine living without a bathroom on-hand, these conversion van layouts are for you. They range from simplistic toilets and outdoor shower set-ups to comprehensive toilet, sink and shower units.

18) Zig Zag Kitchen around Wet Bath with Cassette Toilet

Zig Zag Kitchen around Wet Bath with Cassette Toilet

Staying true to its name, this van layout plays around with the interior design to fit all the amenities in. Rather than place all kitchen amenities in a single space, the kitchen becomes disjointed to fit in the bathroom (which features an indoor van shower setup and cassette toilet ).

Best for:  Small vehicle owners who want a bathroom

19) Small Wet Bath with Platform Bed at the Back and a Large Kitchen Sink

Small Wet Bath with Platform Bed at the Back and a Large Kitchen Sink

If you want the convenience of an easily accessible toilet, but don’t want to lose much space, this van layout provides a solution. It has enough space for a platform bed, kitchen sink and very small wet bath (which can fit a cassette toilet).

Best for:  Vanlifers who want a toilet

20) Platform Bed with Lots of Seating and an In-Drawer Hidden Toilet

Platform Bed with Lots of Seating and an In-Drawer Hidden Toilet

This van layout proves you don’t need a bathroom to have a toilet. It features an in-drawer, hidden toilet — when not in use, the toilet is closed into the drawer, blending seamlessly into the background. This provides a clean, polished look that’s great if you want to invite guests (which is easily doable thanks to the expansive seating options).

Best for:  Vanlifers who want to entertain guests

How Do I Plan My Campervan Layout?

Once you’ve measured dimensions, chosen your amenities and devised an idea of the kind of van layout you’d like, you have to actually plan it out. This can be done through one of the following methods:

  • Draw it on paper
  • Use 2D editing software (like Photoshop)
  • Use 3D editing software (like  vanspace 3D )

Any visual representation can help you efficiently plan where everything is going to go.

What is the Best Layout for a Small Van?

In general, the best van conversion layout is one that prioritizes functionality. Each area of the van should serve multiple purposes to maximize the space. For example, seating areas should convert into beds, platform beds should provide storage space, and so on. This doesn’t mean it has to be uncomfortable or look disheveled — with the right aesthetic flair, most van interiors look quite cozy.

The layout should also prioritize your needs. For example, if you don’t need a shower or toilet, you don’t want to waste space with a bathroom. Ultimately, the best camper van layout will vary from person to person. If you need help finding a design that works for you, reach out today!

Choosing Privacy Room length

For the appropriate Privacy Room length measure the full length of the awning case (measurement A) and select the Privacy Room length to match.

The actual length of your awning case (measurement A) will usually be slightly different to the nominal Privacy Room length. i.e. a Fiamma F45 S 300 awning has a case length of 308 cm and should be fitted with a Privacy Room 300.

Choosing Privacy Room Height

Measure the height from the ground to the BOTTOM of the awning case (measurement B).

  • For measurements from 225cm to 250cm choose Privacy Room Medium
  • For measurements from 251cm to 280cm choose Privacy Room Large

Measure both ends of the awning as the one end may be slightly higher than the other.

Privacy Room Depth

All Privacy Rooms on this page are for awnings which extend by approx. 250cm.

30 Frickin’ Sweet Camper Van Floor Plan Layout Ideas

Picking a floor plan for your camper van is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, but it’s also so fun!

Getting to design your own van that’s completely customized to you is super exciting, but you might just need some inspiration… So, I’ve compiled this list of 30 different camper van floor plans that you can browse through to get an idea of what your camper van will look like.

Whether you want a large shower, bunk beds, or an outdoor kitchen, I’ve got it all right here!

van layout ideas for the kitchen, van bathroom/shower and van sleep setup

Table of Contents

3 Top Things to Consider When Choosing Your Camper Van Floor Plan

  • Have a Short List of Must-Haves: Because we’re working with so little space, it’s important to keep your expectations just as small. Before looking at any camper van floor plans, make a mental note of what is absolutely necessary for you in your camper van layout (ex. a bathroom, lots of storage, a full kitchen, etc.)
  • Multi-Purpose Is King! Look for ways to create multi-purpose design elements. This is the best way you can increase the amount of boxes your camper van layout checks. Camper vans just don’t have the space for both an eating table and an office table so be sure that there are many spaces in your layout that serve more than one function.
  • Choose Functionality Over Aesthetics: Looking at Instagram, you may think that van life is all about aesthetics. And while you can have a van build that is both visually pleasing, and works for your lifestyle, I’d always recommend prioritizing the latter. Living in a really Instagram-worthy van doesn’t mean much if it doesn’t suit your needs.

30 Super Awesome Camper Van Floor Plan Ideas

Alright, now I’ll go into some general ideas for your camper van floor plan.

Remember that each van build is super specific to each person. Any of these camper van layouts absolutely needs to be catered to your specific wants and needs.

I’m starting off with some more general camper van floor plans and then I’ll go into ideas for your van’s bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom!

Two-Person Workspace and a Shower

Two-Person Workspace and a Shower

This self-converted Sprinter van has it all. It’s arranged with a platform king-sized bed at the back, a kitchen on one side, and a workspace on the other.

They also somehow managed to fit a shower, stove, and garage space for two bikes at the back. You are giving up a good amount of open floor space when packing in this many amenities, though.

Here’s a full tour of this camper van conversion:

Workspace/Dining Area with Corner Kitchen and a Wet Roo m

This Ford Transit conversion is really beautifully designed. It’s got a corner kitchen up front that separates the driving cab from the rest of the van.

The wet room has a shower and a chemical toilet, there’s a fixed bed at the back, and a working/dining space for two people.

Workspace/Dining Area with Corner Kitchen and a Wet Room

Raised Bed Across the Back and a Dinette

van layout Raised Bed Across the Back and a Dinette

Here’s a wood-finished interior van with a platform bed, a kitchen with a countertop burner, and a small dinette. It also has lots of storage under that raised bed.

This Ford Transit build does not have a toilet or shower, but it’s so cute inside I feel like I just can’t complain!

Gear Storage Build with Seating and a Skylight

van layout with mountain bike storage

This build has a pretty high platform bed that makes room for bike storage. The “garage” at the back has two slots made specifically for bikes. These slots slide out so you can easily load and unload your gear.

On the interior, there’s a large skylight, an induction burner, and a nice bench seating area.

Raised Bed in the Back and a Large Workspace and Kitchen Area

raised bed and large workspace van layout

This minimalist van from our home on wheels has all the bare necessities. They’ve built a large platform bed at the back. On either side of the van is a large workspace, and a kitchen. Plus, I love that pull-out fridge that’s completely hidden away in a kitchen drawer.

10 Camper Van Bathroom Layouts

Not all camper vans have bathrooms–some builds just don’t have room for one. Those that do have to get really creative with how they incorporate a toilet, shower, or both into the space.

So here are some of the best camper van layouts for your bathroom I could find out there, from just toilets, to showers, to both!

Under-Dinette Composting Toilet

van bathroom layout toilet under dinette

I’ve gotta say, this is one of the more clever toilet setups I’ve seen in a camper van.

The toilet in this Mercedes Sprinter conversion is hidden under a cushion of the dinette. And if you didn’t know it was there, there’s no way you could tell. As long as you’re okay with doing your business seated right next to your kitchen and bed, I think this is a really smart setup.

Shower with Toilet Storage

This build has the tiled shower tucked away behind a sliding door next to the kitchen.

The couple that lives in here also decides to store their portable cassette toilet inside the shower, which is super convenient. The shower does take up quite a bit of room, but if you ask me, it’s so worth it to have one.

Here’s a tour of this gorgeous van:

Exterior Shower With Curtains

exterior van shower idea

Of course, I had to include this option: the lovely outdoor shower!!

An outdoor shower saves you tons of space, and is a great option as long as you’re comfortable showering outside. You will need to be in a warmer climate to use this, though.

Large Shower with Room for a Composting Toilet

van layout with toilet in shower

This is one of the largest showers I’ve seen in a camper van layout. It’s got a linoleum floor, a light, and a nice curtain for privacy.

The shower in this Fiat Ducato has room for a toilet–in this one it’s a composting toilet, but a portable cassette toilet would work in this space as well.

BTW, if your’e super into organization (like me) check out my 9 PERFECT Small RV Bathroom Organization Tricks!

Shower-in-a-Drawer

van layout compact shower in drawer

Brittany and Drew over at mr and mrs adventure have one of the most unique shower setups I’ve ever seen. It’s in a drawer!!

The drawer pulls out from under the seating area, and the showerhead is hooked up to the freshwater. They have a curtain that goes around the drawer to keep the water contained.

Check out their video on how they built this unique shower:

Shower in the Counter

van layout shower under counter

Here’s another shower that’s completely hidden: it’s in the counter!

The top of the counter comes off and reveals a showerhead and a drain. (It’s pretty spacious for being on the inside of a counter, right?) They’ve also got a curtain that attaches to the ceiling so the shower doesn’t make a huge mess.

Hidden Pull Out Cassette Toilet

van layout hidden cassete toilet

This cassette toilet is tucked away in a small drawer. The drawer slides out and has the perfect amount of room for the toilet plus some toilet paper. It’s right next to the bed, so again as long as you’re okay with using the toilet so close to your bedroom, it’s a great way to save room.

These cassette toilets are a good place to start if interested in going this route!

Under-Bed Composting Toilet

camper van safari room

Another hidden toilet! This one is a composting toilet that slides out from underneath a fixed platform bed, and has a door to hide it all away. Platform beds allow for a good amount of room underneath, and I think a toilet is a perfect use for that space.

By the way…if you’re reading this and thinking: what the heck is a composting toilet?? Check here: 7 Best Portable Composting Toilets for RVs and Camper Vans (+Buying Guide)

Wet Room at the Back

van wetroom layout idea

This camper van conversion has a shower and chemical toilet right in front of the back doors, and a sliding door to close it off from the rest of the van.

This build means that if you’re out in the middle of nowhere you can open up those backdoors and have a beautiful view while you take a shower.

8 Camper Van Kitchen Plans

Kitchens are one thing that will vary widely between camper van conversions. There are endless options for where to put the kitchen, and what amenities you want in it.

So, here’s my list of the very best camper van kitchens, from the totally built out to the most bare-bones.

Corner Kitchen and Private Driver’s Cabin

corner teal van kitchen and private drivers area

This corner kitchen is separated from the driver’s cab by a wall, but there’s still a nice window so you don’t lose natural light. There’s also a window above the sink area.

A corner kitchen design like this one allows for a lot of counter space. (Plus I love the pop of blue from those drawers.)

Slide-Out Outdoor Kitchen

camper van safari room

This slide out kitchen comes out of the back doors. It’s got a cooktop, a mini stove, and an impressive amount of prep space and storage space.

If it’s rainy, you’ll likely need an awning, and if it’s cold, this isn’t the best option. But for warmer climates, a slide out kitchen is the perfect way to save space.

Portable Outdoor Van Kitchen

camp kitchen chuck box

If you’re not a full timer, an outdoor kitchen of sorts might be sufficient for you.

Not only does cooking outdoors reduce smells in the van, but a portable kitchen is also nice to have if you’re at a campsite and you’d rather cook by the fire and table than cramped in your van.

All you’ll need for a portable camp kitchen (we love this chuckbox ) is a nice table, a portable stove, and some propane!

Split Kitchen

camper van safari room

This kitchen area helps divide the space from the bedroom, so it feels less like it’s all one room. You’ve got a little climb-up space leading to the bed that also functions as a seat.

I really like the way this layout divides the space up, even if there’s not much counter space built in.

Simple Kitchen with a Countertop, DIY Sink, and Portable 2-Burner

camper van safari room

If you’re on a budget, or you just don’t want to go all out, a super simple van kitchen comes together easily, and can give you every amenity you need.

This kitchen just has a countertop, a portable two-burner, and a DIY sink. It’s not fancy, but it has everything you’d need in a van kitchen.

Double-Wall Kitchen with Large Sink and Lots of Countertop Space

camper van safari room

Now this kitchen has more space than you’d see in some studio apartments.

It’s double walled, so it has tons of counter space. It has a nice large sink and a built-in gas stove. I also love the butcher block countertops.

Large Window and a Pull-Out Fridge

camper van safari room

Here’s a single-wall kitchen that packs everything into a smaller space. This kitchen has a built-in gas burner and a nice stainless steel sink, all under a scenic window.

The large refrigerator is fully hidden in a pull out drawer. Plus, the workspace opposite the kitchen can help function as some extra counter space if that’s needed.

Natural Aesthetic With Oven

camper van with oven rebuild

This beautiful van kitchen is actually part of a Dodge Promaster 2500 build I documented that was performed by Stinson Vans. I love the natural aesthetic and fully decked out kitchen – deep sink, fridge, spice racks, oven and even a nice eating area!

7 Camper Van Bedroom Floor Plans

And last but not least… the bedrooms!

The bedroom really should be the coziest space in your van–but you might have to get creative to make it ultra comfy. So, here are seven different van bedroom floor plan options, I’ve included fixed beds, convertible beds, and bunk beds.

Let’s get to it!

Fixed High-Loft Van Bed with a Rope Ladder

loft bedroom van layout with cute rope ladder and wood aesthetic

This bedroom setup has a super high loft bed with the cutest rope ladder to help you climb up.

The height of the loft might mean you can’t fully sit up in bed, but I think it makes the space feel more cozy. Plus, you get that much more storage room in your garage at the back of the van.

Convertible Couch to Queen Bed

queen bed in van convertible couch to bed

This is a really creative way to do a convertible bed. The bed folds out from a small couch, and rests on the countertop to a queen sized bed.

Convertible beds are an excellent way to save space, but just remember you’ll have to be putting away and taking out the bed everyday.

Convertible Dinette to King Sized Bed

camper van safari room

This Dodge Sprinter conversion has a super roomy feel to it thanks to the dinette to bed conversion. The dining area/work space has room for six people to sit.

At night, you’ll fold it down into a king sized bed. That’s right!! Since the bed isn’t super lofted, you get a lot of head room and it won’t feel cramped.

Van Bunk Bed

camper van safari room

Traveling with more than two people in a camper van means you’ll need more sleeping room.

One way to add sleeping space is to install a bunk bed like in this Ford Transit XLT. It’ll fit two people per bunk and is a genius use of the XLT’s height.

Convertible Double Bench Seats to Bed

van benches to bed layout

This Dodge Sprinter conversion has two large couches that convert into a bed. The couches sit on either side at the back of the van and have tons of storage underneath.

With this build, you get lots of seating during the day, a nice large bed at night, and ample storage.

camper van safari room

That’s right! Camper vans can have murphy beds.

This Murphy bed is located at the back of the van, and folds entirely away, leaving lots of room for gear storage, or just some open floor space.

Bunk Bed Over Play Den and Cargo Space

vanlayout with cute built in baby area

This Volkswagen Crafter has such a cute bedroom setup. The bed is a high loft with a play area underneath it on the inside, and storage on the other side.

If you’re traveling with little ones, this bedroom setup is such a cute way to give your kids their own special space in the van.

Tips for Planning Your Camper Van Floor Plan

Looking at all these beautifully-designed vans is fun, but actually planning your own build can get a little stressful.

The van conversion process is so much easier if you go into it knowing exactly what you need. Then you’ll create a camper van layout based on that list. From there, all you’ll need is a little elbow grease and determination, and you’ll have your dream camper van!

**Pro tip: if you aren’t ready to go all out on van life, try it out first by renting a van from RVShare . Here’s how!: 5 Things to ALWAYS do Before Renting an RV (+step by step how to rent the best one! )

Here’s What Your Camper Van Layout Needs to Include

I’d recommend this be the very first step in your process.

Basically, you’ll want to go through and list out all the “things” you want to have in your van.

Here’s an example of some items you might put on this list:

  • Countertop space
  • Toilet and waste tank
  • Eating space
  • Clothing storage
  • Outdoor gear storage
  • Tools storage
  • Tech storage
  • Garbage can
  • Space for solar battery or inverter

Of course, there’s a pretty wide variety of what you want or don’t want in your van. But starting off with a basic list of “needs” is super important.

You can use this list (along with measurements of your camper van and the items you’ll put in it) to map out a floor plan.

Factors to Consider When Creating Your Van’s Floor Plan

All of these considerations, along with your list of must-haves, will help give you a pretty good idea of what your van conversion needs to look like.

Weight distribution:

To start, you’ll need to look up the weight capacity of your van. Make sure that everything you’re putting into your van (plus the weight of you and your van partners) is below the weight capacity.

You’ll also need to look at the distribution of weight across the van. Unevenly distributed weight over time can cause some mechanical issues for your camper van.

The weight distribution does not have to be equal. Instead, just try not to put all your heavy items on one side of the camper van.

Plumbing and electrical:

Decide what kind of lights you want, where they’ll go, and how much power you’ll need. From there, you can decide what kind of electrical system you want:

  • Solar battery
  • Lithium battery
  • Power inverters
  • Shore power

Then, decide where you’ll put your batteries, switches, and bus bars, and create a map, like this one:

sample wiring diagram for camper van

For plumbing, first decide if you want a toilet, or a shower, or neither, or both!!

And choose what kind of toilet you want:

  • RV flush toilet with black tank
  • Composting toilet
  • Portable toilet
  • Cassette toilet

Then, decide where your fresh water, gray water, and black water tanks will go, and how you’ll hook up all the plumbing.

Storage:

Make sure your van build has designated storage space for:

  • Outdoor gear
  • Kitchen items
  • Tech/work stuff

This is especially important if you have larger items that you haul around such as bicycles or surfboards.

I’d say always err on the side of more storage than less. Once you move into your van, you’ll start to accumulate items that you didn’t know you needed.

Sleeping arrangements:

There are two major things to think about when deciding on sleeping arrangements:

  • Fixed bed vs convertible bed
  • Number of sleeping spaces needed

A fixed bed is better if you’re not super short on room. A permanent bed takes up a lot of room even when it’s not in use, so if you’re looking for something more versatile, go for a convertible bed.

Convertible beds usually turn into a dinette, or a workspace during the day, and you can transform them back into a bed at night.

How to Lay It All Out

When planning out your camper van conversion, it’s super important that you create schematics showing exactly what it’s going to look like.

Here are some options on how you can create a detailed plan to help you get started on your build.

Good ol’ pen and paper:

Maybe using a pen and paper is a good way to get started. You can sketch out generally where everything will go.

camper van safari room

However, it can be difficult to get everything exactly to scale, and unfortunately, you can only draw in two dimensions. You can also make a 2D drawing on your computer using a program like PowerPoint that’ll give you something a little more like this:

camper van safari room

SketchUp is a paid online software that helps you model 3D spaces. Using a 3D layout can help you get really specific with your conversion van layout.

Plus, it helps you to really visualize what the space will look like, which can help point you towards any flaws in your design plan.

The software is pretty intuitive and easy to learn, too.

Here’s a great video that shows an example of how you can use it to design your van:

Vanspace 3D :

Vanspace 3D is another 3D modeling software. However, this one is geared specifically towards planning out vans.

You get to start off by choosing your specific van, so your van’s dimensions will already be loaded on.

Here’s a tutorial on how to use the software:

Happy Planning!

Whether you took inspiration from the shower-in-a-drawer, or decided you need an Instagram-worthy van kitchen ASAP, I hope I helped you get started with your planning.

Remember, make a list of your absolute must-haves, and have fun with it from there! Browse other vans you see in Instagram, and create a mockup of yours in online software.

Astro Safari Van Camper Conversion: Construction Update 1

Within a few months of moving to Canada, we knew we wanted to do another cross-continent road trip in a similar style to our UK to Turkey trip.

Different to that trip, however, this one is going to be bigger, longer and in a better converted ‘camper car.’ Last time we used a Toyota Lucida  but we want something with more space and potential this time.

The general plan is to leave Vancouver Island and drive across Canada before travelling south through the United States to Mexico. We’d like to spend a good amount of time exploring Central America before heading north again, back to British Columbia, Canada.

First published 2013.

Introducing our new van conversion – a Chevrolet Astro

At the moment we have a Chevrolet Astro Van so for the time being Jean Robert is going to work on converting that and see how it goes….we don’t leave for a little while so we have lots of time if things change or don’t work out!

Here is our 1995 AWD 8 seater Chevrolet Astro Van.  I really love this car so far, even more so than our previous road trip car, Lucy the Toyota Lucida (sorry!). These vans were built on truck chassis’, so it’s a really sturdy vehicle. It’s perfect for carrying our canoe and the ability to go off-road every now and again.

Parked blue Astro van with small white dog next to it.

Basic bed set up

The best thing about this vehicle is the size. It’s much wider than our old Lucida, and a little bit longer.

Jean Robert took out all the sidings at the back of the car (the bits by the seats with cup holders and storage and the like) and found that being 5″9, he could lay width-wise in the car. This is when we really saw the potential as a vehicle to convert to a camper…

We figured that if we were able to have a bed all the way in the back, this would free up so much space in the middle, room for more living space.

We both agreed that we definitely wanted a fixed bed for the minimum fuss – it’s so nice to arrive somewhere late and then just crawl into bed rather than fuss around with sorting the bed!

Building a bed frame for our Astro van conversion

To start, Jean Robert put in a basic bed frame to test it out. He calculated the height of the van by how much head space he needed if he sat upright on the frame (as a seat).

This leaves us a good space for storage underneath; way more than our last car! This bed frame’s width is about the same as a double bed, but the height is less.

Though this is definitely not finished (there’s not much insulation for example) as a basic set up, it really works. It’s really exciting to see how much space this bed frees up in the middle of the car; there’s so much potential for a really awesome mini-camper.

Looking inside a blue Chevrolet Astro Van. It has a bed frame with blue cushion in it.

Future plans

Our Europe trip provided us with the experience and knowledge to build something much better than the first time – we now know for example, that the storage really needs to be accessible from the side (so some sort of sliding drawers) and the back – having a ‘trapdoor’ style opening under the bed is really annoying.

Small things like having hooks, more storage around the bed and a fan are little things we didn’t think of last time or didn’t have time to implement.

This conversion will also be more self-contained; we want to be able to stay at less paid campsites next time, mainly to save money but also for the experience.

We won’t be leaving on any big trip until Spring next year, so we’ve got a lot of time to plan and prepare this time. We’ve also got the chance to take the van on lots of smaller trips, which will help improve the design before we leave for the much longer adventure (potentially one year in length!)

Despite Jean Robert only putting in the basic bed last week, we’ve already taken it for a test camping trip to a nearby Provincial Park which went pretty well!

Our first update of our Astro Van Camper Conversion. Includes a basic bed setup behind the middle seats

Although the Astro is a rugged vehicle, they are not built on a truck chassis. It is a unibody vehicle with a subframe holding the engine and front suspension components.

Hi there, I was interested to see that bed could be fitted width wise in Astro! This must make huge difference to available space inside van. But I test drove an Astro and tried to lie down across the back and could not see how it could be done. I'm 5'7" and seemed to be cramped even if I imagined I was lying above the wheel wells. Can you give me some details about how you removed the paneling to make a side to side bed possible and what the dimensions are once the paneling is removed? If I can work out how it's done, I'm definitely getting me an Astro! Thanks and safe travels to you both.

I have the same question, I am looking to buy a van for conversion, and considering an Astro, but from what I could find on internet is that the width is just close to 60 inches, which isn't much!

I have the same van, looking to do the same thing. Looking forward to reading about your adventures. Your site is very inspiring.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. We should have another update on the van coming soon so keep an eye out! Progress is unfortunately a lot slower in the winter as we won't be realistically using the van until April or May. Good luck with your own conversion! Let us know if you start a blog about it Gemma and Jean Robert

How much headroom is gained with a conversion high top?

  • Add to quote

Hi all, new to the forum, I'm in the market for an Astro/Safari to turn into a camper van and am wondering how much space is gained with the hightops found on some of the conversion vans. I have read that the interior height of a standard model is 48". Can anyone confirm this and what is the interior height with a high top? Thank you!

WinnieVan

Would also love to know the answer to this question... I think it is something like 12 or 18" but I could be completely wrong.

WimpTech

Depends entirely on the top, between 4 to 30 inches. Here is the go to reference material for interior dims... http://www.morehawes.co.uk/camper-conve ... conversion

nosxjeep

The most common hightops I've seen on Astro conversions are the 8" to 12" variety...... You don't get as much room inside as the height of the top because the tops are pretty thick (about an inch in some places on some models) and most conversion companies then add a bunch of layers of stuff inside that...... So the answer is, "it varies", and "not enough to stand up in unless you are well under 5 ft tall"......

Meterpig

There is a company in Colorado that makes a pop top. Best of both worlds.

coleary20

Do you know the name of the company? Thanks!

Meterpig said: There is a company in Colorado that makes a pop top. Best of both worlds. Click to expand...

The short answer is not tall enough to be comfortable. I've looked and stood in some of the ones with a hi top and its barely tall enough to kind of stoop in and its uncomfortable at that. If you just want some headroom to sit up on the bed and put your shoes/clothes/whatever on its probably fine but it would get old fast if you're in it often. I plan on getting one for my safari (junkyard quoted me about $100 for one) and I'm going to use the hi top to make a pop top, instead of mounting it directly to the roof I want to put it on a frame that will scissor up and down like the sportsmobile top. Then I'll have canvas made for it and seal everything up. Theres a guy on YouTube that has a video explaining how it's done except he made his clamshell up like a westfalia. Being able to fully stand up will make the inside feel much bigger than it is

Ohhh, Gavio's build, he is a regular around here.

Yea I swear I saw him when I used to lurk the forums but I wasn't sure. It's an inspirational build for sure. Anyways I'd say its better to go this route of getting a used hitop and making it a pop top instead of getting a hi top made that's tall enough to stand in. They probably cost the same in the end but junkyard hi tops are more available and it wont stick up as high as something like a big handicap or camper hi top

The 15 Best Camper Vans for Getting Away From It All in Style

The first years of this decade have already provided ample evidence that it’s important to get away from our daily lives from time to time.  And you don’t have to suffer the airport hordes or step foot on a plane to do so. We currently find ourselves in something of a golden age for luxury trailers, which has made it easier than ever to take your life on the road without sacrificing many, and in some cases any, of the comforts of home. And now, there are plenty of manufacturers and dedicated conversion shops giving the same treatment to vans and other similar vehicles. They may not be able to sleep as many people as their hulking cousins—with one key exception—but these all-in-one wonders come loaded with perks such as high-end kitchens, Wi-Fi-enabled multimedia systems, and plush beds. Plus, their relatively smaller size means they are more agile, off-road friendly, and easier to park. Below are 15 campers that will let you experience #vanlife in comfort and style.

Our Best Camper Van Picks

Best overall: airstream interstate 24x, best for off-roading: jayco terrain, best for weekend getaways: mercedes-benz eqt marco polo, best for off-the-grid trips: winnebago solis, best for cyclists: outside van tails, best for camping (anywhere): storyteller overland beast mode 4×4, best to live in: loki expeditions discovery series, best all-electric option: tonke eqv.

  • Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

Best With a Bathroom and Shower: Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Best for $50,000: caravan outfitter free bird, best for families: winnebago boldt, best for winter road trips: sportsmobile sprinter 4×4, best conversion: boho old faithful, best for diy couples: ford transit trail.

Airstream Interstate 24X

Airstream. Thankfully, the company isn’t afraid to branch out. Just look at the  Interstate 24X , the trailer maker’s attempt to take the camper van to new heights. Built on the bones of a  Mercedes-Benz  Sprinter—like a lot of the models on this list—the vehicle has everything you need to rough it in comfort. Airstream has done a lot to maximize space in its climate-controlled cabin. A modular dining table doubles as a desk, and it can be easily converted into the largest sleeping area in a Class B Motorhome. There’s also a full mini kitchen and bathroom. You can take the van off-roading, too. In addition to a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine that churns out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque, it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a height-adjustable suspension and all-terrain tires. Pricing for the all-around beast starts at $213,850.

Inside the Airstream Interstate 24X

Special Features: —A climate-controlled living area that has been designed to maximize available space. —A modular dinner table, a mini-kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet.

Jayco Terrain

Jayco is best known for its hulking travel trailers, but like Airstream, it can do compact, too (well, compact enough to fit in a parking space, that is). The US company’s new  Terrain  model, which starts at $192,000, is an adventure van designed for those who like to veer from the beaten path. As the name suggests, it’s designed for off-roading, with a turbo-diesel V-6, Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a rear hitch strong enough to tow an additional trailer if you need more room. Inside, it’s a little spartan compared to some other options on this list, but its kitchenette can be converted into a sleeping area with room for a full-size bed, as well as plenty of storage space beneath. There’s even a built-in awning when you need some shade in the summer months.

Inside the Jayco Terrain

Special Features: —Equipped with Koni shocks, a rear stabilizer and a heavy-duty tow hitch. —Kitchenette can be converted into a spacious sleeping area with room for a full-size bed.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo from the side The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Mercedes-Benz clearly doesn’t want to relinquish its title as the go-to van maker for outdoor lovers. At last year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon, the German marque showed off a prototype based on its upcoming all-electric EQT van called the Marco Polo. The stylish EV has everything you need for a weekend at the campground and is more compact than the ubiquitous Sprinter. When the van’s rear seats are folded down, the back can be used as either a sleeping area with room for a double bed or a cooking and entertaining space. The kitchen doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of some of the other entries on this list, but it does have a pull-out stove, fridge and sink. There’s also a pop-up, roof-mounted tent if your travel party includes more than two. The Marco Polo is a concept, but Mercedes will sell a module that will allow you to turn any EQT into a camper van when the $51,500 EV goes on sale in the spring.

Inside the Mercedes-Benz Concept EQT Marco Polo The Concept EQT Marco Polo

Special Features: —All-electric power train, so you don’t have to worry about doing too much damage to nature while you explore it. —Its  camping  gear—from the bed to the kitchenette—is part of a module that can be fully removed when you need more cargo room.

Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B

The Winnebago Solis is for adventurers who don’t want to be confined to the campground. The van is available with an optional power kit that has everything a group of up to four adults needs to spend a few days off-the-grid. The setup, which includes an inverter, a shore battery converter, a battery energy converter, a solar energy converter and an alternator energy optimizer, can produce enough power to keep the van and all its features running for up to 72 hours. On top of that, the van features a kitchenette, a convertible entertainment area with room for a double bed, and a full-width wet bath.

The Winnebago Solis Pocket 36B's dinette can be converted into a full-size bed

Special Features: —A unique power kit that can provide enough power to spend up to 72 hours off the grid. —Still has all the features you’d expect from a luxe camper van, including a full-width wet bath.

The Outside Van Tails next to a cyclist

If you like to mix biking and camping, Outside Van has the vehicle for you. The Portland brand’s  Tails  model is a camper van designed with cyclists in mind. The van, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, has everything you need for a few days away from home, including a kitchenette, a roll-over sofa and a convertible mattress. But what really sets it apart is the rear of the vehicle that’s basically an on-the-go bicycle repair shop, with a fold-down work table, an air compressor and Molle panels to hang all your tools. If that wasn’t enough, it somehow has room for six bikes, even when the bed is laid out for the night.

The interior of the Outside Van Tails

Special Features: —The back of the van is basically a bicycle-repair shop with a fold-down table, an air compressor and plenty of storage space for tools. —Has room for six bikes, even when its convertible sleeping area is out.

Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

This latest offering from Storyteller Overland, based in Birmingham, Ala., is a true adventure van. The  Beast Mode 4×4  is the outfit’s most feature-packed model yet and was designed specifically for overlanding (as you may have guessed from the company’s name). It’s a true 4×4 powered by a 188 hp turbodiesel V-6 that’s strong enough to tow an additional 5,000 pounds. Its slick retro-style livery is offset with loads of useful off-roading gear, too, such as an LED light package, a roof rack and a side ladder and custom wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich K02 tires. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to relax after a day of exploring, including a cushy lounge that can be converted to a full-size sleeping area. There’s even a climate-control system to ensure you’re comfortable no matter the weather outside. It’s priced at a flat $198,746, for everything listed above.

Inside the Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4x4

Special Features: —Turbodiesel V-6 sends 188 hp of power to all four wheels and is strong enough to tow 5,000 extra pounds. —Surprisingly cushy lounge for an off-roading beast.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series Expedition Vehicle

Let’s get this out of the way: the Loki Expeditions Discovery Series isn’t technically a camper van. It’s a giant expedition vehicle, but because its cabin is installed directly onto a heavy-duty truck chassis you also don’t need anything to tow it. The vehicle’s cabin is what separates it from anything else on this list. Loki Expeditions has turned a shipping container—yes, you read that right—into a full-featured living space that has all the amenities you’d expect to find in a luxury apartment, including a full kitchen with a large fridge, an entertainment area with a U-shaped banquet, and a wet bath with a cassette toilet. It’s also big enough to sleep six adults, with room for two in the dedicated bedroom and four in the entertainment area. And because the heavy-duty vehicle, which starts at $550,000, has all-wheel drive, you can take it practically anywhere.

The Loki Expedition Discovery Series's living area and kitchenette

Special Features: —Cabin has all the features you’d expect to find in a well-appointed apartment and can sleep six adults. —Built on a burly heavy-duty truck chassis that gives you the freedom to venture off the beaten path.

The Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring with its pop-up tent opened

Looking for an EV you can take to the campground. The upcoming EQV just might fit the bill. Despite its relatively compact size—it’s smaller than the ever-popular Sprinter—Dutch camping outfit Tonke has managed to outfit it with everything you need to spend some time communing with nature. It has an entertainment area that doubles as a workspace along with a kitchenette, both of which can be converted into a two-person sleeping area with a simple flip of a bench (a roof-mounted, pop-up tent means it can sleep two more, too). Best of all, there are two variants available—the Touring, which is designed for long road trips, and the Adventure, which is aimed at casual campers.

Inside the Tonke Mercedes-Benz EQV Touring

Special Features: —Fully electronic power train means you won’t have to worry about filling up the tank (though the battery is another story). —Can sleep up to four even despite its relatively compact size.

Best for G-Wagen Lovers: Terracamper Tecrawl

The Terracamper Tecrawl with its awning and kitchenette out

The Tecrawl isn’t a camper van per se, but it’s hard to leave something this cool off a list like this. Terracamper’s latest offering is based on one of Mercedes-Benz’s most legendary vehicles, the G-Wagen . The German shop has dreamed up a modular accessory kit for the luxury 4×4, that starts at $11,900 and includes a roof-mounted tent, a convertible sofa, and a pull-out kitchenette with a fridge box. Thanks to the ingenious setup, the boxy SUV can sleep up to three and act as your home base next time you want to rough it for the weekend. And because it’s a G-Wagen you can take it as far off-road as you want.

Inside the Terracamper Tecrawl's rear cargo area

Special Features: —A G-Wagen but has room for up to three people to sleep. —Packs a brawny powertrain that’s well-suited for off-road adventures.

Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Thor Motor Coach makes camper vans for those uninterested in making sacrifices. With the  Sanctuary , the company has taken Mercedes-Benz’s already excellent Sprinter 2500 4×4 and turned it into something you could easily live on—on or off the grid. The off-road-ready vehicle comes in two configurations—the 19P ($148,680), which features a back bench that converts into a bed, or the 19L ($151,060), which has a fixed double bed. Even with the bed there’s still plenty of room for other creature comforts, including a bathroom, an entertainment area with a TV and a kitchen with a sink, a dual-burner cooktop, a convection microwave oven and a fridge. An Onan 2500 LP generator keeps everything up and running, too, including an A/C system you can leave on for eight hours at a time. There’s also retractable power awning when you want to spend some time outdoors.

Inside the Thor Motor Coach Sanctuary

Special Features: —Full-featured bathroom has a sink, a shower and a toilet. —Available with your choice of either a convertible or a fixed bed.

The Caravan Outfitter Free Bird from the side

Caravan Outfitter’s third-generation Free Bird isn’t the most feature-laden camper van out there, but it has everything you and the family need to spend a weekend (or more) at the campground. The van, which starts at $50,810, is built on the relatively compact Ford Transit Connect platform but still has room for a full-size bed, a multi-purpose table that can be used as a dinette or workstation, and a pull-out kitchenette with a sink. Because it’s smaller than other options on this list, it only has room to sleep two, but there are several enticing add-ons, including roof- and rear-mounted capsule tents, in case you’re traveling group includes more people.

Inside the Caravan Outfitter Free Bird

Special Features: —It’s the rare camper van that’s small enough to be comfortably parked inside your garage. —Caravan Outfitters offers several intriguing add-ons so you customize it to your liking.

Winnebago Boldt

Airstream isn’t the only famous RV maker that’s gotten into the camper van game. Winnebago actually sells several, and our favorite is the luxe  Boldt . Despite being nowhere near as long as one of its campers—it caps out at 22 feet in length—the $230,276 van has everything you’d expect from the larger vehicle, including dedicated living and sleeping areas, a fully functional kitchen and a bathroom equipped with a shower. You also have several interior decor options to choose from, each of which delivers an updated take on classic Winnebago style. The Boldt is designed for paved roads and campgrounds, but if you want a more rugged ride, the brand also offers the off-road-ready  Revel.

Inside the Winnebago Boldt

Special Features: —Stretches 22 feet bumper to bumper, meaning there’s plenty of room for you and yours. —Enough space for dedicated entertaining and sleeping areas.

Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Take one look at  Sportsmobile’s Sprinter 4×4  and it’s clear what its designers had in mind: off-roading. Whether you go with the 12- or 14-foot configuration, the Texas outfit’s stripped-down take on Mercedes’s ultra-popular van comes equipped with a 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 connected to a five-speed automatic transmission and pumps out 188 hp and 325 ft lbs of torque. That should be more than enough to tackle even the toughest terrain. Inside, you’ll find a spacious living area with a full-featured kitchen. If you want even more room, you can also opt for a pop-up sleeping area that’ll make it that much easier to lounge in comfort.

Inside the Sportsmobile Sprinter 4x4

Special Features: —Well insulated throughout, but also has space for a propane furnace or heater. — 3.0-liter BlueTec V-6 and four-wheel drive mean it can take on any terrain.

The Boho Old Faithful from the side

Struggling to find a camper van that’s just right? Boho might be able to help. The Arizona-based company specializes in conversions and will work with you to create the vehicle of your dreams. The company offers several 20- to 24-foot layouts—of which the most popular is the appropriately named Old Faithful—that can be further tailored to meet your needs, whether your priority is multi-season versatility, lots of cooking space, or spending serious amounts of time on the road. The company also offers plenty of cool add-ons too, like wood paneling and flooring.

Inside the Boho Old Faithful

Special Features: —Versatile layouts that can be further customized so that you’re getting the exact van you want. —The wooden interior option looks better than it has any right to.

The 2023 Ford Transit Trail from the side

Ford’s ready to knock the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter off its perch. The Detroit giant unveiled its own camper van, the Transit Trail, last fall. The adventure-ready vehicle is based on its uber-popular commercial van but is taller, wider and outfitted with protective body cladding. It’s also powered by a potent V-6 that sends 310 horses and 400 ft lbs to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Right now, Ford seems content to let the $65,975 vehicle be the base for the camper van of your dreams, but it comes loaded with a slew of features that will come in handy at the campground, including a drillable wall you can use to install shelves, a kitchenette or furniture, along with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and a back-up camera. It also available in three body configurations—medium-roof, standard length; high-roof, standard length; and high-roof, extended length—one of which should fit your needs.

Inside the 2023 Ford Transit Trail

Special Features: —It’s basically a blank slate for you and your partner to create your own dream camper. —Still comes with premium features such as a 12-inch infotainment screen and a back-up camera.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

camper van safari room

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

camper van safari room

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

camper van safari room

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
