Working with a reputable travel agent takes the stress out of travel. Use our guide to research the best travel agency for you. How to find a travel agency

Accreditation.

Travel agencies aren't required to obtain licensing or certification, though recognized organizations accredit and certify members. Travelers can confirm a travel agency's accreditation by looking for the accrediting body's logo on a travel agency's website or brochure.

  • ASTA accreditation: ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors) accreditation assures clients that the agency operates under ASTA's code of ethics and will communicate with clients about unexpected changes to travel plans.
  • IATA accreditation: IATA (International Air Transport Association) accreditation provides agencies with a Sales Agency Agreement and a TIDS number that authorizes sales of international and domestic airline tickets.
  • Unaccredited agencies: If considering an unaccredited travel agency, take into account that their lack of accreditation could mean they are inexperienced or have had service problems that caused a loss of accreditation.

Credentials

Credentials are similar to accreditation, though on an individual level. Some travel agents obtain certification through The Travel Institute, which confirms the agent's interpersonal skills and destination knowledge. These types of certifications ensure that travelers are working with an agent that has the necessary experience to anticipate travel issues and provide solutions.

  • Certified travel associate (CTA): A CTA is a professional who has a minimum of 18 months in the travel industry and has passed courses to enhance skills and service.
  • Certified travel counselor (CTC): A CTC has the skills of a CTA, advanced industry training and five years of industry experience.
  • Certified travel industry executive (CTIE): A CTIE is a travel industry professional who has management training within the travel agency.

Travel agencies charge fees for services provided to clients to account for time spent researching and booking travel arrangements. Keep in mind that a travel agent’s inside knowledge of travel-related discounts may make booking through an agency less expensive than self-booking over the internet.

  • Airline ticket procurement fee: Travel agencies charge an airline ticket procurement fee for purchasing tickets on behalf of the traveler.
  • Travel agency service fees: Other common travel agency fees include fees for booking hotels and rental cars and for time spent researching trips.
  • Itemization of costs and fees: While there is no law requiring travel agencies to provide an itemized breakdown of costs and fees, you can request this information to ensure fees are reasonable.

International travel planning

Planning a trip to another country is typically more complex than planning a domestic trip due to extra paperwork and the need to know details about the destination country. A trusted global travel agency can help manage details and paperwork on your behalf.

  • Destination-specific research or specialization: Some agents with certification from The Travel Institute are trained in region-specific bookings while others charge for time spent researching destinations.
  • Hotel and flight packages: Using a global travel agency to book international hotel and flight packages can cut costs even after agency fees are added. To check for savings, compare online price listings to prices provided by the agency.
  • Visa and passport requirements: Having visas and passports in order is vital when traveling to other countries, so confirm which documents are needed with the agency early in the trip-planning process.

Group travel planning

Planning a trip for a group can be challenging because some facilities cannot accommodate groups. Travel agencies find suitable venues and transportation for the entire group. A global travel agency can help you with international group vacations.

  • Large-group discounts: Travel agencies have access to discounts based on established relationships with hotels and airline companies to secure a great price for group bookings.
  • Transportation: A large group is not going to fit in a standard rental car. Confirm the travel agency is able to book a van or several cars to meet the group's transportation needs.
  • Itinerary details for the group: In addition to sleeping arrangements and transportation, eating out and visiting tourist attractions can be problematic for a group. Ask the travel agency to arrange the fine points of the group's trip in addition to handling the larger details.

Land and sea planning

Planning a vacation involves more than selecting a country and booking hotel and airfare. Hiring a travel agency can help make sure travelers enjoy every stop in their itinerary.

  • Add a cruise: Talk to your travel agency about adding some sea travel to any vacation. Different onboard accommodations and ports of call allow travelers to extend the reach of their trips.
  • Seamless transfers: Making the transfer from onshore accommodations to a cruise ship can eat up almost an entire day, but a travel agent takes care of the hassle by arranging travel to the port at the right time.
  • Planning excursions: Ask the travel agent to arrange desired shore excursions at the ship's ports of call that enrich other planned itinerary stops.

Types of travel agencies

Commercial travel agencies.

Commercial travel agencies cater to business travelers. These agencies specialize in tracking down deals for business travelers to help companies manage travel costs.

Online travel agencies

Travel agencies that exist only in cyberspace provide clients with the convenience of online booking and discounts that are available only to professional travel agencies. Some agencies offer both online booking and walk-in service for clients.

Niche travel agencies

Niche travel agencies provide clients with specialized knowledge of a region. This enhances the travel experience for clients by ensuring paperwork is in order and providing specific, often first-hand, knowledge of the area tourists are visiting.

Membership associations

Memberships associations give travelers access to the organization's travel planning services for the cost of an annual membership rather than charging per transaction. This type of agency offers the most benefit to frequent travelers.

Who uses travel agencies?

International travelers.

International travelers can cut the stress of planning trips to other countries when a global travel agency manages the details. This includes making sure each traveler has the proper paperwork and booking suitable travel accommodations.

Business travelers

Business travelers can take advantage of savings associated with discounts available only to travel agents. Some travel agencies also handle the detailed expense report paperwork required by the accounting departments of most companies.

Group travelers

Group travelers can save time when looking for accommodations that have room for the entire group by using a travel agency. Group bookings through an agent can also save you money.

Travel bargain seekers

Travel bargain seekers can discuss their travel budget with a travel agent. This is a way to determine what discounts and money-saving packages a travel agency can arrange.

Travel agencies FAQ

Most travel agencies don’t charge customers, meaning the only price you pay is the cost of your trip. Agents are typically paid commissions by the hotels or airlines. Some travel agents may charge service fees from $100 to $500, but that money is usually applied toward the cost of your trip if you complete travel arrangements through the agency.

To know if a travel agency is legit:

  • Review the agency’s website for a physical address and phone number.
  • Check for industry certifications and associations with professional organizations like the American Society of Travel Advisors.
  • Read reviews to learn about client experiences. Ask for a list of references.
  • Make sure the agent accepts credit cards.
  • Compare pricing to make sure cost isn’t too high or too low.

No, it’s generally free to use a travel agent. A travel agency may charge a service fee or a booking fee, but it’s common for this fee to apply toward the cost of your trip.

The four main types of travel agencies are:

  • Commercial travel agencies , which cater mainly to business travelers
  • Online travel agencies that help people plan their trips entirely online
  • Niche travel agencies , which specialize in arranging trips to specific areas
  • Membership associations that provide travel services as a benefit to members

Using a travel agent is a more personalized experience than booking online — and sometimes cheaper. Travel agents are experts who can find the best deals on flights , cruises, hotels and activities. Agents are often available 24/7 in case of problems. And there’s usually no extra cost to use one.

Yes, a travel agent can save you money, especially if you’re traveling internationally to unfamiliar territory or if you’re organizing a trip for a big group. In addition to finding you the best deal, a travel agent saves you time planning and researching — often at no cost for services.

Travel agencies:

  • Find the best deals on flights, hotels, cruises and activities for individuals, families, businesses and groups
  • Give clients personalized attention and advice for trip planning
  • Offer trip insurance
  • Save you time and stress
  • Are available 24/7 in case of a problem and advocate on your behalf

No, you don’t need to tip a travel agent. A great way to show appreciation is to refer friends, family members and co-workers. Some people choose to write a thank-you note and/or give a small gift.

Travel, while rewarding, can also be stressful. With so many options for flights, hotels, and rental cars, and so many variables that can quickly go wrong, it’s all too easy for a relaxing vacation or a productive business trip to quickly become harrowing and unnecessarily expensive.

Because of this, individual travelers and companies who require their employees to travel have been hiring experts to plan trips and handle unexpected hurdles for them for decades.

Now, thanks to the internet, travel companies have shifted to also providing tools for travelers to book their own trips with the same access, discounts, and assurance they’d receive if they hired an agent to do it all for them.

If you prefer to have someone do it all for you, though, many of these organizations still provide live service via their travel agents as well.

There are a number of these travel companies around the world, and in this article, you’ll find a list of the top ten ranked by sales revenue in 2019.

Top 10 largest travel companies in the world

Maria Gourtsilidou

The top ten largest travel companies in the world come from a variety of sectors, including airlines, hotels, cruises and online travel agencies. In this article, their listing is based on their market value using data from the S&P platform IQ. Of course, among the leading companies is Airbnb, which although it entered the New York Stock Exchange in 2020, managed in the last days of September to exceed the capitalization limit of 100 billion dollars. The list also includes large hotel chains such as Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide.

The Boeing Co. holds the first place of the list. Its’ market value is about 125 billion dollars. In a recent forecast, Boeing projects steady growth and greater sustainability for Europe’s commercial aviation fleet over the next 20 years, as the vast majority of the existing fleet is replaced with more fuel-efficient models. European carriers will need 8,705 new airplanes valued at €1.25 trillion through 2040, according to the 2021 Commercial Market Outlook (CMO), Boeing’s long-term forecast of demand for commercial airplanes and services. Also, the Boeing Company announced on the 29th of September the appointment of Kuljit Ghata-Aura as the new president of Boeing Middle East, Turkey and Africa (META).

Airbnb holds the second place of the list with 105,8 billion dollars market value. The Airbnb short-term rental platform, founded in 2007, was hardly hit by the pandemic, losing about 80% of its turnover in a matter of months. Fortunately, this summer recovered dynamically as new trends were revealed. Zoom and other technologies that enable remote working have created a new class of workers. Based on this trend, the company saw its revenues increase.

In the third place is Booking Holdings and in fourth place is another aircraft manufacturer Airbus, while the top five is completed by Oriental Land, a Japanese company with more than 60 years of presence in the field of leisure and tourism. The market value of Booking Holdings is 95,8 billion dollars, while the market value of Airbus and Oriental Land is 88,3 and 51 billion dollars respectively. The Oriental Land’s net sales at the 3rd quarter of 2021 were 137,113 million yen from 59,149 million yen at the second quarter of 2021.

Marriott International holds the 6th place of the list with 47 billion dollars market value. Marriott International has recently announced that has signed 22 new hotel agreements in South Asia – comprising India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Nepal – in the past 18 months, expecting to add more than 2,700 rooms to its fast-growing portfolio. Marriott International currently is the hotel chain with the largest number of rooms in the South Asia region and expects to continue its solid growth with these new signings.

Hilton Worldwide holds the position number seven of the list with 36,6 billion dollars market value. Hilton has announced that it will cut its environmental footprint in half and double its social impact investment by 2030. In other words, Hilton Worldwide is in the process of reducing carbon emissions by 61% and water waste by 50%.

Southwest Airlines, Las Vegas Sands and Amadeus IT complete the list with the top 10 largest travel companies in the world. The market value of the Southwest Airlines is 28,9 billion dollars, while the market value of Las Vegas Sands and Amadeus IT is 28,7 and 27,3 billion dollars respectively. Las Vegas Sands Corporation is an American casino and resort company based in Paradise, Nevada, United States. The company was founded in 1988 by Sheldon Adelson, while the revenue reached 3.612 billion dollars in 2020.

Lastly, Amadeus IT Group is a major Spanish IT provider for the global travel and tourism industry. The company was founded in 1987 and reached 5.578 billion euros revenue in 2019.

The Top PR Firms in Luxury Travel

The best travel PR pros know better than to merely slice through the noise of trends that are as fleeting as a summer fling. It’s all about turning those micro-awe moments into unforgettable memories that redefine the story.

top 10 travel companies in world

As the first true post-pandemic travel year ended, Design Hotels, an oracle of boutique hospitality trendsetting, dropped its inaugural tome analyzing it all: the Further Forecast . The 158-page report, made in collaboration with SOON Future Studies, peers into the soul of 2024's travel and culture vibe from the heady realms of healing escapes to the buzz of micro-awakenings and the psychedelic renaissance of therapy. Yet, this crystal ball doesn’t just gaze into the esoteric—it also zeros in on the everyday traveler's quandaries: the fast versus slow life paradox fueled by A.I., and a crash course in neuroaesthetics (because apparently, designing with emotion in mind is the next frontier). While the uninitiated might find it a bit much, this report is practically a treasure map for media specialists eager to whip up the next big wave in travel. And as Boeing continues to navigate its public relations Bermuda Triangle, the rest of us have a year's worth of successes to toast to—and an electrifying horizon to explore.

Public relations pros in the hotel and travel realms are already spellcasting to align with these revelations. Take the "ecology urgency" tsunami—travel's latest green wave—exemplified by GO PR 's unveiling of New Haven’s Breuer-designed Hotel Marcel , the first zero-emissions hotel in the U.S., which achieved over 11 billion impressions, not only catapulting the hotel into the spotlight but also flaunting PR's alchemy in spinning green dreams into headline gold. Founder Gizem Ozcelik ’s savvy, all-women ensemble didn't stop there, also conjuring up the Astrology Dinner Series at Society Cafe in The Walker Hotel Greenwich Village , a cosmic cure to the so-called "loneliness recession" of our times. Over at Meg Connolly Communications , the Fifth Avenue Hotel bash, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and a champagne cascade, amplified our thirst for closeness, luxury, and the elusive members-only aura we're all after. Meanwhile, Perowne International threw a gargantuan extravaganza for the nearly $2 billion makeover of the Raffles London at The OWO , redefining the art of grand openings. Not to be outdone, their Lake Como gem, Passalacqua , clinched the top spot at the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels Awards , proving their Midas touch isn't limited to just throwing lavish parties.

As cozy as the post-Covid reunion tour of 2023 felt, the digital realm threw us a curveball with the ubiquity of A.I., which gave the travelverse a whole new makeover—and it’s not going anywhere. Behemoth OTA Expedia's flirt with ChatGPT even began dishing out customized travel advice, certainly just the appetizer in the banquet of A.I.'s future in our holiday plans. PR firms are riding this digital wave, flaunting their clients as the trailblazing builders of a tech-savvy hospitality world. But of course, the best of the best PR pros know better than to merely slice through the noise of trends that are as fleeting as a summer fling. It's all about turning those micro-awe moments into unforgettable memories that redefine the story.

The Top Luxury Travel PR Firms in 2024

August 28 studio, meg connolly communications, perowne international .

  • Anne-Cécile & Kimberley Blanchot , Co-Founders/CEOs

In 2018, sisters Anne-Cécile Blanchot and Kimberley Blanchot launched August 28, a storytelling powerhouse straddling New York City and Paris that blends bilingual charm with bicultural bravado, becoming the go-to for brands seeking that transatlantic sparkle. “No U.S. agency within our competitive set boasts a French presence quite like ours,” Anne-Cécile Blanchot tells Observer. “While many have established bases in the U.K., the distinct cultural nuances and work ethic in France set it apart. Recognizing and aligning with these differences is crucial for us to effectively serve our French and European clients.” Their portfolio is replete with triumphs, like La Compagnie, the all-business-class airline that defied skeptics and soared with August 28's inventive tactics. They transformed the airline into a haven of creativity with a "Blue Friday" promo that raked in over 380 million impressions and bagged over $2 million in ticket sales. Then there's The Plaza, New York's iconic gem. August 28 crafted a media strategy for the "Defying Gravi-Tea" afternoon tea that was so magical that it not only toasted Wicked 's 20-year Broadway run but also cast a spell over the holiday season, bagging a whopping 1.7 billion impressions. Across the pond in Paris, they've made newcomer SO/ Paris the belle of the ball, thrusting it into the limelight during Paris Fashion Week 2023 with sky-high occupancy from English-speaking markets. As for the future, they're considering AI with a twinkle in their eye, ready to infuse their campaigns with a tech-savvy touch that still carries unmistakable French finesse. Bien joué, sisters, bien joué.

  • Gizem Ozcelik , Founder

In just three whirlwind years, industry maven Gizem Ozcelik has catapulted GO PR to the pinnacle of innovation. Exhibit A: the launch of Hotel Marcel, the first net-zero emissions hotel in the U.S., which snagged over 11 billion impressions across a spectrum of media realms, from travel to business. This project, alongside collaborations with eco-conscious locales like Tourisme Montréal and Visit Faroe Islands, showcases GO PR's green streak. The agency's knack for fresh, buzzworthy campaigns sparkled in 2023 with the hotly anticipated revival of Dawn Ranch near Sonoma (racking up a whopping 693 million impressions in six months), and the monthly themed—not to mention sold-out—Astrology Dinners at Society Cafe in The Walker Hotel Greenwich Village. According to Ozcelik, it’s about looking beyond traditional hospitality PR goals. “We urge clients to pursue creative programming and partnerships that aim to make them a cultural hub in their communities,” she tells Observer. From brewing up a lasagna-flavored beer collab with Don Angie and Talea to maintaining a stellar client stickiness, exemplified by their work with Bridgeton, GO PR has proven itself as more than just an agency—it's the secret ingredient in its clients' success recipes. GO PR's blend of innovation, retention and flair is set to keep the agency on its upward trajectory, leaving a trail of dazzled clients and awestruck audiences in its wake.

  • Gabriele & Andreas Sappok , Co-Owners

In 2006, Gabriele Sappok launched Imagine PR , and in 2014, her partner-in-crime (and life), Andreas, came aboard as managing partner, adding his personal style to the mix. With a crew as sharp as their passports are stamped, they've transformed their portfolio into a global treasure map of luxury and experiential travel campaigns. Their magic touch turned Tswalu, South Africa's vast private game reserve, into a star, landing the March 2024 cover story on U.K. Condé Nast Traveller despite a drought of visuals. The pair's collaboration with Quasar Expeditions charted a course to a five-page feature in Travel + Leisure 's November 2023 issue, cementing Quasar's reputation as a sustainable travel titan in the Galapagos. In a world where SEO reigns supreme, Imagine PR has seamlessly blended digital savvy with classic PR flair. Their campaign for ThirdHome, inspired by the 2023 Met Gala's Karl Lagerfeld theme, not only caught the media's eye but also skyrocketed the company's search engine ranking, highlighting a property once visited by Lagerfeld himself. “As the influence of SEO and algorithms on travel content grows, we've adapted our tactics to reflect this marriage of PR and SEO effectively," Gabriele Sappok tells Observer. "Because what good is fame if nobody can find you for what you do? And what good is being found if nobody trusts your brand name?” With 35 percent of their clients sticking around for over a decade, including 17 years with Singita and 14 with Natural Selection, the Sappoks have proven they're in it for the long haul. Their secret? A dash of imagination and a whole lot of spades.

  • Meg Connolly , Founder

Meg Connolly's knack for making a splash is practically in her genes, and this year, she's added a dash of champagne to the mix. Take the grand opening of The Fifth Avenue Hotel, a campaign bubbling over with the effervescence of a freshly popped bottle of Dom Pérignon. This launch has already become a PR legend, marked by MCC's genius: a multi-layered press campaign that kicked off during Fashion Week with Oscar de la Renta's showcase in collaboration with Moda Operandi. This was just the appetizer for a media feast that devoured the A-list pages of WSJ Magazine and Architectural Digest . The icing on the cake? Sarah Jessica Parker's bubbly endorsement, a champagne waterfall that spilled over into coverage from Vogue to W Magazine . With Slater Gillin, their veteran SVP & Creative Director, at the helm, MCC boasts a retention record that's the envy of the industry, with Maybourne Hospitality (which includes iconic British properties like Claridge’s and the Connaught) in their fold since day one, a bond that's lasted over a decade. This kin-over-contract approach has drawn others into MCC's gravitational pull, including their latest triumph. “We recently began working with Meadowood Napa Valley,” Connolly tells Observer, “a client that has been on our vision board since the agency was launched 17 years ago.” Looking to the future, MCC is poised to broaden its ultra-luxury brand galaxy, with aspirations that glitter like a perfectly cut diamond, ensuring every campaign is a toast-worthy extravaganza.

  • Jules Perowne , Founder/CEO

In a world obsessed with the biggest and the glossiest, Jules Perowne begs to differ, leaning on word-of-mouth fame that luxury hospitality brands dream of. Her secret weapon? A pinch of wanderlust. Perowne’s team are globe-trotters by trade, embracing the ethos that to understand truly, one must see. This approach keeps them perfectly tuned to the desires of the world's most lavish travelers. The results speak for themselves: Raffles London, a $1.7 billion extravaganza with nine restaurants, three bars and hotel suites named after iconic figures like Winston Churchill. Not to mention their Lake Como treasure, Passalacqua, snagging the top spot at the inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels Awards.  With long-standing clients like the Oetker Collection and the 750-year-old Hotel de L'Europe, plus exciting new additions like the 20-year-strong JK Place and its soon-to-open Milan property, Perowne's portfolio is more dazzling than ever. They're also teaming up with Borgo Santo Pietro in Tuscany, Canaves in Santorini and the trailblazing Auric Road in the U.S., adding more stars to their already glittering sky. Perowne's mantra? Back to basics. She's slicing through the noise, not just riding trends but creating them. "I'm constantly on the move—I think last year alone, I hit 82 flights,” Perowne quips. “It's during these travels that I sense the trends. My approach? I trust my gut. And I always say to my team, 'Cut the crap. What's the story? What's the headline? Is it genuine? Is it relevant?' Now, more than ever, those words—relevant, real—are absolutely critical." For Perowne’s clients, expect to be handed the tools to deftly carve your own niche in the luxury universe and thrive.

In the first of a new series of special reports, Sky's people and politics correspondent Nick Martin spent a week in Hastings, a town on the front line of all that is wrong with the housing system, with evictions, social housing shortages and Airbnb all causing issues.

This video report is a difficult watch at times but is well worth 15 minutes of your commute home or evening...

EasyJet is opening its first new UK base in 12 years.

The company says its operation at Birmingham Airport could help cut fares - and will also create 140 direct jobs for pilots and crew, as well as support a further 1,200 indirect jobs.

EasyJet's last new base was at Southend Airport in 2012.

Three planes at the West Midlands airport will service 16 new routes from this summer - including Antalya in Turkey, the Greek island of Kos, and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt.

This property listing for a four-bed semi in London is getting a lot of attention on social media - as it provides an eye-watering illustration of London property prices.

The house is up for £3,500,000 - and, by way of comparison, people on X have found a six-bedroom country mansion in Durham for £1,750,000.

The 1950s-style semi isn't even in central London. It's in Canonbury, half a mile from the nearest Tube station (Highbury and Islington).

It's 0.4 miles from Upper Street, which is a popular night life spot with lots of decent restaurants and trendy shops - so this could explain some of bumper price.

The inside has been renovated and is a sizeable 3,650sq ft - you can decide here if you think it's worth it ...

We looked at sale records for the area and found a similar property in 1996 sold for 10 times less - £312,000.

Primark has begun sealing its carrier bags with large "sold" stickers in a bid to clamp down on shoplifting.

Checkout staff have been placing blue labels, which include Primark's logo and the word "Sold", near the handles of the bags as part of a trial across 18 stores.

The move comes amid reports that thieves are using the chain's paper bags to steal goods.

Now, customers who try to leave stores without stickers on their bags will be stopped by security.

"The thieves would put anything in which didn't have a tag and wouldn't set off an alarm," a worker at a branch in southeast London told The Sun .

"They could blend in with customers because you can only get bags from the checkouts. It was very hard for security guards to spot."

A Primark spokesperson told Sky News that antisocial behaviour and retail crime was "rising right across the retail industry" and it had a range of security measures in place "to help prevent stock loss".

"We'll be keeping an eye on this and monitoring the impact these new measures have, listening to feedback from our colleagues and customers," they said.

The spokesperson added the firm would not be disclosing which Primark branches are trialling the scheme - given it is a security measure.

It's a fairly directionless start on the FTSE 100.

Energy and some consumer stocks drove a slight uptick at the market open, with the index rising just 0.1% to 7,733.

Currys, the electricals retailer, was among stocks gaining more widely.

That was put down to bolstered annual profit guidance despite downwards pressure from the end-of-bid interest in the firm last week.

Potential suitors had included China's JD.com.

Across financial markets, it's worth keeping an eye on the oil price this week

Brent crude has been creeping up since February and is at $85 a barrel currently and nearing $86.

Upwards pressure is being applied by signs of increased demand in China and the impact of the conflict in the Middle East.

Attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure amid the war with Ukraine have been a more recent factor.

The upshot of rising oil costs is fuel price hikes.

They can add to costs in the wider economy at a time when the battle against inflation is far from over.

While data this week is expected to show another easing in the main consumer prices index measure, the Bank of England is worried about the outlook.

The minutes of its latest interest rate-setting meeting on Thursday, which is widely expected to hold off on a cut, will give further clues on the prospects for price growth ahead.

A life insurance firm infamous for its controversial adverts (including  this one featuring Harold Shipman ) has told customers it is unable to take new business.

DeadHappy posted this message on its website...

Existing policyholders can still manage their accounts online as normal, according to the company.

Anyone seeking "a little extra peace of mind" is advised to get in touch with the intermediary.

In January 2023, DeadHappy faced backlash for this advert featuring serial killer Harold Shipman...

It later conceded it had made a mistake.

DeadHappy has been around since 2013, focusing on so-called "Deathwishes" – a policy feature allowing people to say how their payout should be spent.

The average price of a newly marketed home jumped by more than £5,000 month-on-month in March, Rightmove says.

The property website said it was a sign "we now seem to be past the bottom of the market".

The 1.5% increase pushed the average asking price to £368,118.

This is still £4,776 below a peak seen in May 2023.

Agreed sales and buyer demand are higher than this time last year, Rightmove said, although the market remains sensitive to pricing.

The average time to find a buyer is now 71 days, which is the longest at this time of year since 2019, the website said.

Tim Bannister, Rightmove's director of property science, said: "March is typically a strong month for asking price growth, as both buyer and seller activity levels rise and the spring selling season gets under way.

"However, the stronger-than-usual price growth this March indicates that new sellers are feeling much more confident, with some perhaps being overoptimistic, that there is enough buyer activity and affordability in their local market to achieve a higher price."

Mr Bannister said there was a "window of opportunity"... "as we now seem to be past the bottom of the market".

Every Monday we put your financial dilemmas or consumer disputes to industry experts. You can find out how to submit yours at the bottom of this post.

This week, Sky News reader  Joe H  asks...

"I purchased a vehicle from a car dealer. On the original advert, which I still have, the vehicle was listed as ULEZ compliant. It turns out the vehicle is not compliant, and I received £630 of fines from TFL. What legal rights do I have in this situation?"

Stuart Masson, editorial director at The Car Expert, says this...

There are a couple of pieces of legislation that protect consumers in this sort of situation. The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 protects against false or misleading information being given to describe a vehicle, which would include claiming a vehicle is ULEZ compliant when it's not. In addition, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 includes provision that a car must match its description.

If you still have the original advertisement that claims this vehicle is ULEZ compliant, you should be entitled to a full refund.

It may have been an innocent mistake rather than anything nefarious, but the dealer is still liable for the cars they sell. Hopefully, in this case the dealer will acknowledge the error and arrange a swift refund (and compensate you for the fines). You are not obliged to take a different vehicle or credit towards another car and should not be persuaded in that direction. Take the money and start your search again.

If the dealer doesn't want to play nicely, then unfortunately you will have to take action to exercise your legal rights. If the dealership is accredited by the Motor Ombudsman, you can ask it to resolve the dispute. However, there are thousands of dealers – especially smaller traders – who are not signed up to the Motor Ombudsman service. If that's the case, you'll need to seek legal advice to bring a claim against the dealer. The good news is that if you have the original ad containing the incorrect information, you should have a strong case.

For anyone buying a used car anywhere near London, you should always check the TFL website yourself before signing any contract, rather than relying on a dealer's description or promises. Regardless of your consumer rights, it's always much easier to change your mind beforehand than afterwards.

Signing a contract and paying a deposit should be the final steps in your car buying process, after you've inspected the car, test driven it, looked at the service records, checked the MOT history and status, run a vehicle history check, arranged a mechanical inspection, checked that you can get insurance at a reasonable price and confirmed that the car is ULEZ compliant if necessary. If you short-cut any of those steps, you increase your chances of running into trouble.

This feature is not intended as financial advice - the aim is to give an overview of the things you should think about. Submit your dilemma or consumer dispute, leaving your name and where in the country you are, in the form above or by emailing [email protected] with the subject line "Money blog". Vodafone has drawn an angry response from rival BT with its new advertising campaign offering people £100 to switch.

You may remember last week we reported on another delay from the big four broadband providers (BT, Sky, Virgin Media and TalkTalk) in implementing the new One Touch Switching service that will make it easier for customers to switch.

The deadline of 14 March was missed - the second time this has happened.

Uswitch said it was "deeply concerned" about the push back to September, especially given industry-wise price hikes are due to apply from April.

At the end of last week Vodafone sought to take advantage by launching what it called "The Great British Telecoms Switch" - offering customers £100 when switching to certain packages, a sum it says would help cover fees that providers charge to exit a contract.

Vodafone went in for BT in particular.

Its release said many people don't know that BT, EE, Sky and Vodafone broadband all receive the same technology supplied by Openreach.

"This lack of understanding means that an estimated eight million BT customers are overpaying by over £200 a year for the same full fibre broadband also available with Vodafone."

But, speaking to the Money blog, BT hit back, saying it was "disappointed Vodafone have made inaccurate claims" to "generate headlines".

One of the company's main gripes appears to be that in comparing prices, Vodafone has included BT customers who choose to purchase premium broadband products.

They also dispute the idea that just because all these companies use Openreach, they provide the same quality.

Both companies have provided statements to the Money blog but first…

Which is better - Vodafone or BT?

Which?, in its 2024 survey, has BT and Vodafone fairly even - giving them a 59% and 60% score respectively. They both get three stars for speed and reliability - Vodafone comes out on top for value and BT for technical support.

But for Techradar says: "We gave BT a slightly higher rating than Vodafone. The reason for this is simple: although Vodafone's deals are cheaper, BT provides a wider range of options and superior customer service.

"Yes, Vodafone's deals are cheap. But, they may come at a cost if something goes wrong. Plus, your choices are slightly more limited if you go with Vodafone... and it doesn't offer anywhere near the same level of broadband and TV options as BT."

What have they both told us?

A BT spokesperson said: "We fully support the move to OTS and remain committed to delivering it by (or ahead of) the deadline This is a highly complex, pan-industry endeavour to build, integrate and test a new switching system. It's critical that trials are properly completed across all major CPs to ensure best possible customer experience when switching.

"We're disappointed that Vodafone have made inaccurate claims as part of a recent switching campaign. They are apparently willing to launch OTS without adequate cross industry testing, have quoted misleading pricing comparisons to generate headlines, and seem to conveniently ignore that there is in fact a significant difference in the quality of broadband service from providers on the Openreach network. We encourage them to work with us and the industry to deliver OTS as soon as possible."

We put this to Vodafone, who responded: "We've launched The Great British Telecoms Switch to help people save money on their broadband and make it easier for them to switch.

"We are committed to Ofcom's 'One Touch Switching' regulation, though disappointed that it was delayed again by our competitors. We are therefore calling on them to make sure they hit the new deadline and start making it easier for customers to get the best deal."

50-year Wall Street Insider Names #1 stock for AI “Tidal Wave”

Should I put my money in Artificial Intelligence?

Here to answer that for us… and give away his No. 1 free AI recommendation… is 50-year Wall Street titan, Marc Chaikin.

Marc’s been a trader, stockbroker, and analyst. He was the head of the options department at a major brokerage firm and is a sought-after expert for CNBC, Fox Business, Barron’s, and Yahoo! Finance…

But what Marc’s most known for is his award-winning stock-rating system. Which determines whether a stock could shoot sky-high in the next three to six months… or come crashing down.

That’s why Marc’s work appears in every Bloomberg and Reuters terminal on the planet…

And is still used by hundreds of banks, hedge funds, and brokerages to track the billions of dollars flowing in and out of stocks each day.

He’s used this system to survive nine bear markets… create three new indices for the Nasdaq… and even predict the brutal bear market of 2022, 90 days in advance.

So you can see why CNBC’s Jim Cramer has said he’s learned to never bet against Marc.

The Top 10 Tour Operators in 2019

top 10 travel companies in world

A great tour operator can turn a good vacation into an extraordinary one. Our readers’ favorites this year are experts in their fields, whether they’re arranging the perfect family safari in Zambia, a cycling tour in France, or cultural immersion in Japan. These companies were valued for their tailored itineraries and access to normally off-limits experiences, but their greatest value might be their ability to save travelers time — they’ll iron out the logistics that could take non-pros countless hours. To some, that’s a priceless benefit.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

Japan has long been a popular destination with readers, and last year, our editors selected it as Destination of the Year. InsideJapan Tours (No. 8) taps into parts of the country that are not as well known, and it provides super organized, step-by-step itineraries for both first-time visitors and those who return every year. “They provided a booklet for us to self-guide for ten days after a tour of Honshu Island. We haven’t stopped raving about the service of their office, and have spread the word to many,” wrote one reader. Another remarked that “InsideJapan made sure every step of my journey was amazing.”

“Wild Frontiers designed a trip that matched exactly what we were looking for,” wrote one reader, describing this year’s No. 3 tour operator. Specializing in adventure travel, Wild Frontiers creates custom-made trips to far-flung destinations from Uzbekistan and Tibet to Greenland and Antarctica. And they are just as skilled planning a multigenerational family trip as they are an intimate honeymoon.

And there is a sporty journey through Puget Sound’s San Juan Islands for Kayaking (while getting up close to passing Orcas), hikes through rain forests, and soaks in natural hot springs. One reader summed it up by declaring Classic Journeys “could not have been better.”

The Top 25 Startups to Watch in 2023

Current macroeconomic trends have undeniably affected the startup and VC investment landscape, with the world grappling with inflation, threats of recession, and high interest rates.

binoculars and list of top startups

Yet some startups continue to strive, creating innovative products and services that are transforming industries like tech, health, beauty, and more.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist Bill Gurley, who backed companies like Uber, Grubhub, and Nextdoor, says that while startups ought to be realistic about the current economic environment, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad time to get things going.

“The environment for launching a startup was really crazy the past five years. And the truth is that if you’re going to build something from scratch, this might be as good a time as you’ve had in a decade,” Gurley shared in a 2022 interview with McKinsey Digital.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) , an estimated 305m startups are created annually. In 2023, there are an increasing number of startups focused on financial technology (fintech), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain technology, and data management.

The Hustle rounded up a list of top startups in 2023, all of which have made impressive strides in their business model, funding, market share, and technology.

The best airports for customer experience worldwide—as chosen by passengers

Awards based on most reliable global measurement and benchmarking program for airport customer experience.

top 10 travel companies in world

Montreal, 11 March 2024 – Airports Council International (ACI) World in partnership with leading travel technology company Amadeus, today announce the best airports for customer experience worldwide—as chosen by passengers—through the renowned Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards.

The ASQ program stands out as the preeminent airport customer experience measurement and benchmarking program globally, distinguished by its unwavering commitment to a rigorous and scientific methodology. Unlike other programs in the aviation industry, ASQ’s approach is anchored in live research conducted through surveys administered directly to travellers at the airport, capturing their satisfaction levels on the very day of travel. The ASQ Surveys cover over 30 performance indicators across key elements of the passenger’s airport experience, giving the most complete picture of the passenger experience journey. This distinctive methodology is renowned for its robustness, enabling meaningful statistical inference and providing unparalleled insights into the passenger experience.

ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira said, “We are delighted that in 2023 the ASQ program surpassed 400 participating airports in a historical record—reflecting our members’ commitment to placing the passenger first. Likewise, we thank the guests that dedicated their precious time by providing feedback in close to 600,000 surveys. The global growth of the program underscores the trust placed in its scientific and live approach, making ASQ the go-to standard for airport customer experience assessment in the aviation industry. The future success of airports hinges on the unwavering commitment to delivering a stellar customer experience at every touchpoint. In an era where passenger expectations are evolving rapidly, excellence in customer service isn’t just a goal; it’s the key to ensuring airports remain not just gateways, but memorable destinations in themselves.”

Amadeus EVP Airport & Airline Operations Rudy Daniello said, “It’s encouraging to  see continued commitment to customer experience at airports across the world demonstrated again by the ASQ Awards. Over the past few years many airports have applied technologies like self-service and biometrics to improve the experience for passengers across key airport touchpoints. What we’re seeing now is a desire to move to the next level by working more collaboratively with airlines and other partners to better manage the impact of disruption. The management of disruptions is a defining issue for passengers, so we look forward to working closely with the industry as it develops new approaches that deliver improved outcomes for passengers.”

ASQ Awards highlights

  • In 2023, over half of the world’s travellers passed through an ASQ airport , underscoring the program’s credibility and influence in shaping the standards for exceptional airport services.
