Hello, we are arriving in Southhampton 2 days before our cruise on Oct 24. We would like to do a day or half day tour on Wednesday, Oct 23rd. What would you suggest. Thanks, Ray/Janet Meyers

We arrive in Southampton on Sept. 27th. We would like a tour of Bath and Salisbury on the 28th of Sept. It is just my husband and I. Do you have any availability?

We are in a group of eight adults. We will finish our cruise trip on May 13, right in the morning 7:00-8:00 am, but our flight departure time is 22:00. Any suggestion for spending our long day in Southampton with 8 suitcases and 8 hand-carry bags? We want to travel in one vehicle, is it much more expensive? Please advise.

Events & Tours

Discover Southampton’s History - Guided Tours

90 minute guided walks, including visits to Southampton’s towers and vaults.

• Days: Saturdays and Sundays until 31 March 2024
• Time:  1.30pm
• Location: Meet at the Lions on the north side of the Bargate (SO14 2DJ)
• Cost: £7.00 per adult, accompanied children free. Payment by cash or card.

Spring and summer walks will depart from the Bargate, at 10.30am and 1.30pm from Sat 6 April 2024.

The Westgate

In 2019 SEE Southampton made a display in the Westgate covering the history of The Mayflower and The Speedwell and the ‘principal players’ involved in its story, in readiness for the marking of the Mayflower 400th anniversary in 2020.

Whilst many of the events connected with the anniversary had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the display was completed and has been open on many weekends and will continue in 2024 – see our events page or join us on Facebook for current opening information. Our Sunday walks will conclude at the Westgate. 

New for 2024 is also a D-Day and Titanic Exhibition which will open on Sunday 31st March.

Southampton's Hidden History

Let us reveal the hidden history of your city! Southampton history walks depart the Lions by the Bargate at  1.30pm on weekends between Sun 1 October 2023 and Sun 31 March 2024, after which a spring and summer 2024 timetable will take effect. History walks are being staged by See Southampton and Southampton Tourist Guides Association, supported by Go! Southampton.

Day 1 in Southampton

Morning itinerary.

Next, enjoy a walking tour of Southampton’s medieval town walls and discover more about the city’s rich history. Featuring six gates, 13 towers, 90 listed buildings and 30 ancient monuments across one kilometre of the city, Southampton’s medieval town walls are some of the most complete in Britain. Afternoon Itinerary

Circle back to Bugle Street and explore one of Southampton’s most historic buildings, Tudor House and Garden . This timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King’s John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from Tudor House Garden, dating back a further 300 years.

With family-friendly activities, interactive technology and fascinating displays, Tudor House offers something for visitors of all ages and interests - not forgetting a small café serving a delicious range of refreshments all day, such as afternoon tea and homemade cakes, if you’re looking for a light bite to eat.

Evening Itinerary

Test your wits with a trip to Locked In A Room Southampton , just outside Westquay Shopping Centre . Use your wits to solve the mysteries, puzzles and challenges hidden throughout and escape the game before time runs out. You could also try the Dark Arts Bar on High Street for some relaxing games in their puzzle parlour over some magic themed drinks.

Finish your evening with a delicious dinner at one of the restaurants located in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter such as Nandos  or The Scholar's Arms , followed by a show-stopping performance at  Mayflower Theatre , the third-largest theatre in the UK or head over to their sister venue  MAST Mayflower Studios .

Day 2 in Southampton

Sit back, relax and watch the world go by over a freshly cooked breakfast at Mettricks Coffee House , located in the heart of Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. Then enjoy a peaceful walk in Watts Park, where you’ll find two historic monuments: The Cenotaph, designed by Edwin Lutyens and built in 1920, and a statue of Isaac Watts, one of Southampton’s most famous sons.

Just around the corner from Watts Park, you’ll find SeaCity Museum , which introduces the city’s connection with the sea, including its Titanic heritage, and the stories of the people who have travelled in and out of Southampton by sea through the ages.

Continue down Portland Terrace until you get to Westquay shopping centre. With more than 100 shops to explore, spanning everything from fashion and beauty, to food and drink and home and lifestyle, you’re guaranteed to find a few bargains.

After a couple of hours perusing the shops, enjoy dinner and a film at Westquay South. Boasting a diverse range of bars and restaurants such as Tap and Tandoor , Las Iguanas , and Red Dog Saloon , as well as Showcase Cinema de Lux  - it’s the perfect place to sit back, relax and unwind before a new week.

If you prefer independent movies to Hollywood’s latest blockbusters, Harbour Lights Picturehouse is just a short taxi ride away from Westquay, and showcases arthouse and international films as well as live satellite screenings.

Southampton in WW2 Walk

A highly enjoyable and informative walk, during which our 2 guides talked knowledgeably about what happened in Southampton during the war, with a particular emphasis on the blitz that occurred in late November 1940. For me, one of the most fascinating aspects of the walk was discovering a wall, close to the centre of the city, on which American GIs - waiting to embark for Normandy just before D-Day in 1944 - had scrawled their names, along with the US cities and towns they had come from. A number of these etchings are still visible.

Went on the ghost tour with a group of colleagues. Our hosts were engaging and informative. Lots of laughs and a few scares along the way. Would really recommend to anyone. Thanks so much to the team for a fab evening.

I had to arrange a last minute walking tour of Southampton for a number of corporate visitors from across Europe, and that's how I found the Southampton Tourist Guides Association. Andrew replied to all my questions promptly and was of great assistance. He organised the trip so as to perfectly suit the group's needs and interests while also taking into account their busy schedule and the limited time they had available.The visitors themselves were really happy with the tour and all the interesting facts that Andrew provided them with! I would definitely recommend him to anyone else who is visiting Southampton and wants to find out more about the history and the rich cultural heritage of this wonderful city.

Kids really enjoyed themselves. Andrew is very knowledgeable and also recommends a fierce fish and chip shop!! Definitely a top tour!

Our guide Derek too our group of 10 people on a fascinating tour of medieval Southampton and a couple of vaults. Everything well explained and happy to answer questions. Can't recommend this highly enough! We went on the Inside and Under Medieval the Medieval Town walk.

We chose to do a private tour, there were four adults and our two dogs! We started at the Bargate and walked along the ancient city walls, visiting vaults, bridges, towers, St Michaels Square, and places I didn't know were hidden in Southampton! Our guide; Andy, had a beautiful charisma that held our attention for the two hours, he was so knowledgeable and left us wanting to book another. A huge thank you from all of us.
