8 Types of College Campus Visits

Campus tours can be self-guided, virtual or even on golf carts.

College visits

Often the first step a student can take to determine whether a college is the right fit is visiting its campus. While walking tours led by current students are common, many schools offer several other ways to explore and learn about campus, including through self-guided and virtual tours or open houses and overnight stays. Here's a look at eight different types of campus visits – which aren't always available at every school – that a student may encounter during their college search process.

  • Walking tours

Most colleges offer at least a guided walking tour led by current students. Prior to the tour – which takes prospective students and their families to various academic buildings, dining halls and dormitories across campus – there's usually a short information session to provide an overview of the school and its admissions process . These types of campus visits are typically offered on weekdays and most Saturdays, and may require advance registration because space is often limited.

  • Virtual tours

While college tours are free, students and their families often have to factor in travel expenses, including gas, airplane tickets and hotel stays. But through virtual tours – which became more popular as a result of the coronavirus pandemic – students can still get a feel for a campus without leaving their bedroom. Virtual tours can be interactive, allowing students to "walk" around campus by clicking arrows, or are videos led by students or faculty members on bikes, skateboards, golf carts or other modes of transportation.

  • Self-guided tours

For students looking to explore a campus at their own pace, many colleges offer self-guided walking or drive-through tours. While some schools post information booklets on their website, providing insight into each building, others offer audio tours that can be downloaded through an app so students can follow along at their leisure. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign , for instance, even offers an accompanying song playlist to listen to on the drive around campus.

  • Golf cart tours

A walking tour is not always the only formal option to see a college campus. High Point University in North Carolina, for instance, has a personalized tour option, where a student ambassador drives families around the campus in a golf cart. Students also receive information about the school's college transition programs, including the Freshman Success Coach Program and the Project Discovery Program, which provides guidance on how to choose a major . Like other tours, prospective students must sign up ahead of time.

  • Foreign language tours

For students with family members who aren't as comfortable speaking in English, there may be options to take a tour in another language. Some schools, like Old Dominion University in Virginia, have Spanish-language campus tours led by Spanish-speaking students and admissions counselors. These tours are often hosted on certain days of the month. Other colleges may require students to make a request in advance. The University of California, Berkeley , for instance, offers Spanish and Mandarin language tours with a two-week notice.

  • Overnight visits

Some colleges offer an overnight option for prospective students looking to have a more immersive campus life experience. At Reed College in Oregon, for instance, current high school seniors – alongside a host student – can stay overnight in one of the residence halls and eat in a dining hall. Overnights are usually offered only during the week.

  • Group tours

Many students choose to visit a college with their parents or siblings. However, some high schools , community colleges or nonprofits organize group visits to nearby campuses. These visits typically include a short information session and student-led walking tour – during which prospective students are encouraged to ask questions – as well as possibly a meal at an on-campus dining hall.

  • Open houses

While walking tours allow students to see different academic buildings, dorms and dining halls, open houses provide opportunities to ask specific questions and dive deeper into a school's campus life and undergraduate education. Although the structure of open houses varies by college, visiting students often meet with current students, faculty members and staff to learn about available majors and minors, campus activities, the application process and financial aid , among other things. Advance registration is required, as schools may host these daylong events only once a semester.

2024 Players Championship tee times, pairings: Complete field, groups, schedule for Round 1 at TPC Sawgrass

A number of star-studded groups will be featured during thursday's first round at tpc sawgrass.

jordan-spieth-and-rory-mcilroy-round-3-2024-arnold-palmer-g.jpg

The best of the best on the PGA Tour gather this week for the 2024 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. With the feel but not the label of a major, The Players Championship will experience its 50th playing while welcoming back past champions like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler.

McIlroy headlines a featured group with Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland that will tee off at 8:35 a.m. ET in Round 1. Going off the 10th tee, each of these players have question marks swirling around their games that they will seek to put to bed with strong starts. That group will be followed immediately by another quality threesome in Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott and Ludvig Åberg, the latter of which will be making his tournament debut at 8:46 a.m.

The afternoon wave will showcase a number of stars including the defending champion. Scheffler has plenty going against him before even beginning his quest to defend his Players Championship title. Not only has no one ever defended their crown at TPC Sawgrass, but 14 of the last 16 winners have teed off in the morning (not the afternoon) in Round 1. The only two that broke through: Tiger Woods and Martin Kaymer.

The world No. 1 will similarly aim to buck this trend when he takes the course alongside Fowler and Thomas at 1:40 p.m. A couple of Scheffler's counterparts from the Arnold Palmer Invitational will kick off their Players Championships soon after with Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa and Brian Harman beginning at 1:51 p.m., then Will Zalatoris, Shane Lowry and Tony Finau teeing off at 2:02 p.m.

Here's a look at the complete set of Round 1 tee times at TPC Sawgrass.

UW-Milwaukee closing Waukesha campus, citing enrollment, financial pressures

matc college tours

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will close its Waukesha campus at the end of the spring 2025 semester, eliminating an educational option that has been around since 1966.

The closure announced Monday also raises alarm about the viability of the remaining UW branch campuses, all but one of which reported lower enrollment than Waukesha last fall. Four of the 13 branch campuses have already closed or are moving to an online model at the end of this school year.

This spring, 672 students enrolled at the Waukesha campus. In 2018, when UW-Milwaukee absorbed oversight of the campus as part of a UW System-wide restructuring, enrollment topped nearly 1,800.

“As student demands change, universities must change," UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone said.

Mone said there simply weren't enough students to sustain a two-year campus in Waukesha, especially since Waukesha County Technical College started offering associate degrees in 2023.

"Although we had truly hoped and believed that we would be able to continue long-term operations at the Waukesha campus, the data and financial realities do not allow for this," he wrote in an email to the campus community.

More than 100 employees affected by UW-Waukesha closure

The closure will affect more than 100 employees, including tenured faculty. Some of the faculty work at UWM's other branch campus in West Bend and were hoping to teach at Waukesha after UWM announced last fall the Washington County campus would close at the end of this school year.

Together, the two campuses cost UWM about $11 million this year to operate.

Waukesha County Technical College may hire some of the UWM employees as enrollment grows, though President Richard Barnhouse said it was too early to estimate how many people he could hire.

The technical college's enrollment has trended slightly downward over the past eight years, especially during the pandemic, though it hasn't experienced anywhere near the drop of UWM Waukesha.

Like other technical colleges, WCTC receives local property taxes in addition to tuition revenue and state funding. The state Technical College System is one of the best-funded in the country, according to a report by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum last year.

Meanwhile, the UW System ranked in the bottom 10 states for per-pupil funding.

Waukesha County Technical College to create a university center

Students expressed shock by the decision and relief the announcement came more than a year before the doors would close.

{art-time student Melanie Reyes was drawn to the campus for its close commute and cost. Her adviser recently said she had a year and a half to go to earn her associate degree. She worries about whether failing a class or two could hold her back from completing her degree before the doors close.

"The pressure's definitely there now," she said.

Will Florczak had hoped to pursue a bachelor's degree at the two-year campus, which UWM had recently added in hopes of stemming the enrollment tide. Now he's looking to transfer to a four-year school.

"It's unfortunate it's come to this but it is what it is," he said. "I do notice it feels kind of empty some days."

The technical college will develop a UWM University Center for students seeking a four-year degree to get help transferring to UWM.

"We’re going to have a (transition) plan for every student," Mone said.

Waukesha County to decide what to do with campus property

Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow said the closure was "best for Waukesha County." Since he took office in 2015, he said county taxpayers put $10 million into the maintenance of the campus buildings.

A newly-assembled task force will study what to do with the property over the next year, Farrow said. He's open to the county continuing to own the land, renting or selling it. It could remain as an educational institution, or shift to a residential or commerical purpose.

Rep. Adam Neylon, R-Pewaukee, whose district includes the campus, said the closure was a loss for Waukesha County.

"I'm thankful we have a great asset like WCTC in the community that may provide an opportunity to soften the blow," he said.

Sen. Chris Kapenga, R-Delafield, whose district also includes the campus, did not immediately return a request for comment Monday.

UW branch campuses up against demographic forces, budget constraints

The UW System includes 13 four-year universities where students earn bachelor's degrees. There were also 13 UW branch campuses, which for decades served as a pathway for students to start their college degree at a smaller, more affordable campus before transferring to a four-year.

The branch campuses have struggled over the past decade to fill students' seats. Tuition was frozen for 15 years. A state budget cut in 2015 led to a gutting of branch campus staff and a "regionalization" strategy that put one dean in charge of multiple campuses.

Shifting demographics also played a role in these campuses' demise. There are fewer students graduating from Wisconsin high schools, and a smaller share of them are choosing to pursue a college degree. Most concerning, college leaders said, is a growing percentage of the public questioning the value of a college degree .

There's competition, too. Waukesha County Technical College has a campus about three miles from UW-Waukesha. The same is true for many of the other branch campuses dotted across the state.

When fewer students enroll, it puts pressure on universities because revenues fall, but costs almost never do.

Mone said the cost of operating the Waukesha campus on a per-student basis was comparable to the main campus. But tuition was about half that.

"That puts us in a very untenable, very difficult situation," he said.

2018 merger didn't work, faculty say

In a 2018 Hail Mary, the UW System restructured the branch campuses under the oversight of four-years. The thinking at the time was the larger campuses would subsidize the branches and keep them afloat.

Some UWM branch campus faculty said UWM did little to help them in the wake of the restructuring.

Professors said the student recruitment process prioritized the main campus − where students pay a more expensive tuition rate − at the expense of the branches, hastening enrollment declines. They also said the merger actually complicated the transfer process because classes were numbered and coded differently than what was offered in the same discipline at the main campus.

Mone disputed many of the professors' critiques. He pointed to bachelor's degree options created at the branch campuses and some upgraded facilities as ways in which UWM invested in its Waukesha and Washington County campuses.
