Travel + Leisure / Kristin Kempa

A laptop is often the priciest tech investment travelers will pack for their journeys. And, with the rise of digital nomadism and working vacations, more and more travelers face the same dilemma: how to protect their laptops while on the road. This is where a durable, padded laptop bag comes in handy. The best ones usually feature a separate, cushioned compartment and water-resistance, all while remaining easily accessible on the go.

We researched and even tested dozens of styles, including carry-ons, totes, duffels, briefcases, and weekenders, and we selected Patagonia's Refugio backpack as our top pick. What won us over is its combination of smart features, lightweight design, and beautiful style — all of which are essential for any leisure or business traveler carrying a laptop. The backpack is a multifunctional powerhouse that has you (and your valuables) covered regardless of the mode of transportation or destination.

Best Overall

Patagonia refugio 26l daypack.

Backcountry

Why We Love It: It features a removable laptop sleeve that has its own separate, designated pocket.

What to Consider: The main compartment doesn’t have extra pockets or slots.

A good travel laptop bag should accommodate your needs in various situations. It should be your go-to bag for everything from camping adventures to business trips, and few bags fit the bill like Patagonia's Refugio backpack.

This beloved style has been updated several times through the years, and its latest version is certainly the best to use as a laptop bag. The reason? The bag comes with a detachable padded laptop sleeve featuring a zippered compartment. This keeps your device extra protected and gives you the flexibility to store the sleeve in other bags or simply use the compartment instead for something else. Additionally, the laptop sleeve closes with a snap button and has an expandable mesh pocket where you can place a charger, pair of earbuds, cords, or even a small notepad.

The backpack's main compartment has a padded bottom — a rarity for a backpack — and fits approximately a weekend's worth of clothing and accessories. Store your documents and other small items in the zippered front pocket, and place your water bottles or drinks in the elastic side slots. We also appreciated the ergonomic design of the straps: they’re padded and feature a chest band, which is placed way above the chest line and is much more comfortable this way (especially for women). The Refugio is available in nine color options that vary from bold to classic — so the one in black, for example, could work for business travelers seeking a more formal option.

Best Backpack

Solo re:define backpack.

Why We Love It: It has a lot of storage space.

What to Consider: It only comes in black and gray.

This may look like a small backpack, but we actually found it to be more like Mary Poppins' magic bag as the capacity just keeps on going when we put it to the test. The padded tech sleeve can fit a 15.6-inch laptop and a tablet (there are two separate slots), while the main compartment has plenty of room for shoes, toiletries, and a change of clothes (which also makes this a great carry-on or overnight bag option). Another feature we love is the excellent organization: there are two water bottle pockets, a battery slot that enables you to charge your devices on the go, a key leash, and plenty more small pockets for all the essentials.

This backpack also aced our wear-and-tear tests. It’s made from recycled plastic bottles, and the exterior is treated with an anti-microbial coating that’s easy to clean with wipes, keeping it looking like new. Business and leisure travelers will get plenty of mileage out of this sturdy and sleek Solo backpack.

The Details: 18 x 13 x 7 inches | Recycled PET Polyester | 1.43 pounds | Fits 15.6 inch laptop

Best Wheeled

Tumi oxford compact carry-on.

Why We Love It: It is an excellent under-the-seat option.

What to Consider: The media pockets may be difficult to zip if the bag is too full.

Tumi's mini carry-on is a good choice for travelers heading for a quick business trip who want to travel light and upgrade to a premium option. The bag is designed to fit under the seat in front of you and can fit a couple of days’ worth of clothing, including a laptop and a travel tablet. The designated media pocket is at the front of the bag, making it very convenient to access. We did find the laptop sleeve was difficult to zip when the bag was packed with a heavier jacket (and the case needed to be squished under the seat), but if you don't overpack it, it works without a glitch. Then, in terms of construction and maneuverability, this Tumi carry-on scored a perfect grade as it moved flawlessly on both four and two wheels with little to no resistance.

The Details: 16 x 14 x 8 inches | Nylon | 6.6 pounds

Best Sustainable

Troubadour orbis 1-pocket backpack.

Why We Love It: This bag's many pockets and slots are its strongest feature.

What to Consider: The material is not very breathable.

When it comes to padding, this backpack is in a league of its own. We found the cushioned straps and back panel made it the most comfortable backpack we have ever carried. Additionally, the padding provides extra protection for your laptop or tablet. This bag has a tapered design on top, which some may find challenging to pack, but the sides have fabric expanders to help with that.

The exterior is sleek and minimalist, with leather accents that elevate its look. Inside, there are plenty of pockets to keep travelers organized, including a designated media pocket that can easily fit a 17-inch laptop. But we’re perhaps most impressed with the bag’s sustainability — it’s made from recycled polyester (including the lining) so that it can be recycled and reused over and over.

The Details: 11.8 x 16.5 x 5.5 inches | Recycled polyester | 3.3 pounds | Fits up to 17-inch laptop

Best Weekender

Away everywhere bag.

This may be a weekender, but we found it was able to fit more than just a couple days worth of clothing and accessories during our tests. It’s also designed like a suitcase with a clamshell-style opening, so packing and accessing your belongings is super convenient.

Keep your laptop and an additional tech device in the padded pocket with a magnetic opening, and stow your wallet or passport holder in the small outer pocket secured with a strap. There are also plenty more pockets and compartments inside, so rest assured that your belongings will not end up in a messy pile. While this Away weekender does come with a shoulder strap, it’s not padded, and carrying the bag by the handles can get a little uncomfortable after a while. But this is why the trolley strap is handy — just slip the backpack right over your carry-on’s telescoping handle instead.

The Details: 20.9 x 11.8 x 9.4 inches | Nylon, leather | 3.8 pounds | Fits up to 15-inch laptop

Best Duffel

Dagne dover landon carryall bag.

Dagne Dover

Why We Love It: The bag has several accessories that help organize your belongings.

What to Consider: The fabric may show stains and spills easily.

We found this to be the ultimate travel duffel that also happens to be the perfect bag to store your laptop as it has a roomy media compartment that closes with a Velcro strap, so it stays flat when not in use. This style comes in five sizes, but only the medium, large, and extra large can fit a laptop. The top zipper opens wide so packing is a breeze, and inside are multiple pockets for smaller items. The great thing about this duffel is it has an additional shoe zip bag, a mesh pouch for cables and earbuds, and a detachable key leash to help you stay organized.

You can also attach the duffel to wheeled luggage thanks to a trolley sleeve on its backside. The neoprene material is durable and held up very well during our wear and tear tests. However, neoprene is known to show creases with time.

The Details: 14.5 x 7.5 x 9 inches | Neoprene | 2.08 pounds | Fits a 13-inch laptop in a medium

Bandolier Tote Bag

Why We Love It: It’s elegant, lightweight, and perfect for everyday use.

What to Consider: The bag has an open top.

While this chic leather tote is the ideal laptop bag for travel, it is also a great commuter bag. Its pebbled leather holds up excellently to daily use, and its timeless silhouette makes it perfect for the office, subway, or restaurant.

The size is also convenient for frequent use, as it can hold a water bottle or cup, notepads, cosmetics, sunglasses, and a jacket. The laptop sleeve accommodates devices up to 15 inches long and closes with a snap. We would love a secure top closure, especially if using this bag as a personal item, since the bag features an open top. However, if easy and quick access to your belongings is a priority day to day, then this is definitely the right tote for you.

This carry-all scored high in portability and convenience, too, as its handles are long enough to carry as both a shoulder bag and handbag for an added touch of versatility.

The Details: 18 x 12 x 6 inches | Leather | Fits up to 15-inch laptop

Best Organization

Quince revive nylon large tote.

Why We Love It: It's an excellent all-season option to keep you organized on the road.

What to Consider: While it has a magnetic top closure, it doesn’t zip closed.

Thanks to a combination of smart storage organization and a spacious interior, we found this carry-all was a total dream when it comes to packing. With so many pockets, dividers, and compartments, it's easy to see and access keys, lip balm, shoes, travel documents, and your laptop, for which there’s a padded pocket with a Velcro closure.

This Quince bag is also quite versatile — travelers can easily use it as an everyday bag, a weekender, or even a diaper bag (the nylon fabric is super easy to clean). The latest, updated version of the tote has a magnetic closure, providing a little extra security for your belongings.

The Details: 13 x 17 x 5 inches | Nylon | 1.76 pounds | Fits up to 15-inch laptop

Best Briefcase

Samsonite xenon 3.0 gusset briefcase.

Why We Love It: It’s lightweight and features many pockets and slots.

What to Consider: It’s not water-resistant.

Samsonite's Xenon briefcase is extremely popular among business travelers for its practical design, high-quality construction, and excellent storage capacity. The front panel unzips to reveal several flat pockets for documents, pens, a tablet, a wallet, and a passport. Inside, a padded compartment protects your laptop from shocks and drops, while the rest of your business accessories, folders, chargers, and cables can be stored in the roomy pockets next to it. Pack as much as you want because this briefcase is super lightweight and has a trolley band on the back. You can carry it as a shoulder bag using the removable and adjustable padded strap, or simply tote it as a handbag.

The Details: 16.5 x 12.75 x 4 inches | Nylon | 2.4 pounds

Best Designer

Smythson lightweight slim briefcase in panama.

Smythson

Why We Love It: It’s made from high-quality leather and has a classic design.

What to Consider: It won’t fit much besides a laptop.

This Smythson briefcase is a sophisticated way to elevate your travel look and protect your laptop or tablet while on the go. The highlight is the sleek design, which is ideal for the airport, office, and beyond. It’s even formal enough to use as an everyday laptop bag if your work environment requires it. The high-quality grosgrain leather has a beautiful texture, adding depth to the minimalist silhouette.

Inside, travelers can fit a 15-inch laptop, notebook, pens, and travel documents thanks to an additional zippered pocket. The removable shoulder and trolley straps are additionally helpful for traveling. The Details: 15.5 x 10.6 x 2.5 inches | Material | Leather | Fits up to 15-inch laptop

Best Budget

Lenovo laptop shoulder bag.

Why We Love It: It’s compact-yet-spacious and lightweight.

What to Consider: It’s not quite as durable as other options on our list.

You don't have to invest a lot of money to get your hands on a high-quality laptop bag. This Lenovo briefcase costs less than $20 but delivers the same features and high-quality construction as many pricier options. The polyester exterior has a water-repellent coating that protects your belongings from the elements, and all the exterior pockets are zippered. Depending on the size you choose, the shoulder bag fits laptops or tablets up to 12, 15.6, or 17 inches. However, the interior can accommodate other items like cords, chargers, and earbuds. Weighing in at under a pound, it is the lightest laptop bag we've seen on the market so far.

The Details: 14.2 x 0.8 x 9.8 inches | Water-repellent polyester | 12.8 ounces | Fits a 12-inch device

Best Water-resistant

Antler chelsea daybag.

Antler

Why We Love It: The laptop compartment is accessed separately.

What to Consider: The shoulder straps aren’t padded.

Predicting what Mother Nature will throw at you while traveling is impossible, but you can always prepare. Antler's elegant Chelsea backpack was definitely made with travel through the different climate zones in mind. Cut from thick, water-resistant nylon, it has a structured silhouette and durable construction that protects your belongings. The material is well-made and holds up great to drops and spills.

The backpack has a separate laptop compartment designed for a 13-inch device, but we were able to fit a 14-inch laptop inside with room to spare. The lining is soft and velvety and feels like scratch-resistant jewelry box fabric. The main compartment has a clamshell opening, which makes it convenient to pack. Speaking of packing, we were able to fit a few days worth of clothing and a pair of shoes thanks to the compression straps and a removable zippered pouch. We like that one of the side pockets expands to accommodate larger water bottles, and we love that the available colors match the shades of Antler's carry-ons, so travelers can color-coordinate their luggage.

The Details: 14.57 x 10.24 x 4.72 inches | Nylon | 1.32 pounds | Fits up to 13-inch laptop

Best Messenger

Estarer computer messenger bag.

Why We Love It: The canvas exterior has a water-repellent coating.

What to Consider: It’s on the larger, bulkier side.

Whether you're headed to work, class, or the airport, a classic messenger bag is ideal for carrying your laptop and other everyday necessities. This one from Estarer has enough room for the essentials, plus clothing for an overnight stay as well. The top flap covers a large zippered compartment separated in two by a padded divider (you can place your laptop on one side and everything else on the other). The messenger features over a dozen pockets and slots for cards, pens, documents, and much more, so it's easy to stay organized. The bag boasts a buckle closure for extra security, and the shoulder strap has a padded leather panel that looks chic and makes carrying it a breeze.

The Details: 18.5 x 13.78 x 5.91 inches | Water-resistant canvas | 2.7 pounds | Fits up to 17-inch laptop

Tips for Buying a Laptop Bag

Determine your ideal size.

Since laptops come in multiple sizes, so do laptop bags. The most common sizes accommodate devices that measure up to 14, 16, or 18 inches.

If you own a 14-inch laptop, don't be tempted to buy a much larger bag (usually, anything more than half an inch is considered too big) because it won't protect your device against bumps and drops that well. And if you prefer a larger bag to also accommodate things like clothes and gear, consider buying an additional laptop case for extra protection.

Look for built-in organization

Most travelers who carry a laptop also need room to store additional tech accessories such as chargers, cables, headphones, and memory cards. Some laptop users may even travel with an extra keyboard and mouse. That's why your laptop bag should have a well-designed interior with multiple pockets, slots, and compartments. This will keep your belongings organized and easily accessible whenever you need them. If you plan on packing clothes and toiletries in the same bag, then look for styles with at least two roomy compartments, ideally zippered, so your laptop and tech gadgets are protected from accidental spills.

Consider the best material for your needs

Laptop bags are made from a variety of materials ranging from leather to synthetic fabrics to PVC, and each has its pros and cons. Natural materials like canvas are lightweight, but they easily absorb moisture. However, some companies treat the exterior canvas with a water-proof coating that adds a water-resistant, easy-to-clean layer.

Synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester are a preferred material for backpacks. They are lightweight and flexible, so you can easily place them under the seat, and they provide protection from the elements. On the flip side, nylon and polyester are very thin, so look for bags with additional padding in the laptop compartment.

Leather backpacks, messengers, and totes all look beautiful and provide good protection. However, leather is not water-resistant, and the material tends to be heavier.

Finally, hardshell bags and carry-ons are an excellent option for those who like to travel light — after all, traveling with a carry-on suitcase with a laptop compartment means you don’t need to carry a separate laptop bag.

Generally, laptops are measured by the distance between the diagonal edges of their screens. However, this size does not account for any additional material that encases the screen. So when choosing a bag, close your laptop and measure it diagonally from edge to edge — you will probably end up with a number that’s higher by a quarter-to-full inch than its screen size. Considering this number, choose a laptop bag that can accommodate it.

If your laptop is thicker than the average computer, check the width of the bag's laptop compartment to ensure it can fit comfortably inside.

Most airlines' carry-on allowance includes a personal item that can be stored under the seat in front of you. So, many travelers pack a laptop into that bag — it’s easily accessible and always with you. However, if you know you won't need your laptop and your hardshell carry-on provides good protection for fragile items, you can also store it in there and place it in the overhead bin during a flight.

We would never recommend you store your laptop in checked luggage because it might get damaged, lost, or even stolen during your trip. Baggage handlers aren’t exactly known for being delicate, and with more than 50 percent of travelers admitting to having luggage lost by an airline, you’ll want to avoid storing expensive items in your checked luggage. Additionally, if you're headed on a multi-leg trip, it's a good idea to have your laptop with you in case you need to use it.

Tips on Buying Carry-on Suitcases With a Laptop Compartment (Guide)

Selecting the correct type of suitcase, 1. softside suitcases.

Since softside suitcases are made from soft, pliable materials, it is easier to pack oddly shaped items and even squeeze in more items than you expected. Soft shell suitcases usually come with several pockets on the outside, which comes in handy when you want to pack in items that you would like to have easy access to while traveling.

Not all suitcases can survive the rough handling by airport staff, but the softside suitcase definitely has the advantage here. Hardside suitcases tend to develop cracks in the hard shell when put under pressure, but not softside bags. They can withstand being thrown around and, aside from dirt and stains, come through in good shape.

Fragile items inside the suitcase, however, are more likely to be damaged because the softshell does not provide ample protection. Fortunately, with a carry-on, this isn’t too much of a concern. You can rest assured that your laptop and other fragile items will be secure, as you will be the one handling your bag throughout the trip.

2. Hardside Suitcases

If you’re concerned about keeping your laptop dry and well-protected no matter the weather conditions while you travel, a hardside suitcase is a superior choice. These bags are made from a variety of materials, but the most commonly used are ABS and polycarbonate. While both of these are strong and durable, ABS is more prone to cracks and breaks as it isn’t very flexible. A polycarbonate shell may be slightly more expensive, but it will likely last you far longer and provide the peace of mind you need when traveling with fragile items, like laptops.

Understanding What Size Carry-on Suitcase With a Laptop Compartment You Should Get

The most important thing to remember when choosing a carry-on is that it has to comply with airline regulations concerning size and weight.

While the maximum dimensions may differ by an inch or two among different airlines, the standard size regulation for most flights is 22 x 14 x 9 inches (55.9 x 36.6 x 22.9 cm) . This allows for the luggage to be comfortably stowed away in the overhead bin.

Being just 1 inch over the carry-on limit usually isn’t problematic, since the airline staff doesn’t pay much attention to marginally oversized bags. However, there’s always the chance that your carry-on might have to be checked in at the gate, so if you can, get a smaller carry-on which will always be within the limits.

Size restrictions for under-seat luggage are not so specific and may vary much more between airlines because each airline has different aircraft models in its fleet, so the space under their seats is different. But generally, most personal items have to be under 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm).

The weight requirements for hand luggage also vary between airlines. US airlines usually don’t have any weight requirements for hand luggage or they’re looser. European airlines and budget airlines usually allow their hand luggage to be about 15-26 lbs (7-12 kg). That’s why it’s important to choose as lightweight carry-on as your budget allows, but not sacrifice the quality too much.

A lightweight carry-on will usually weigh between 5.5-7 lbs (2.5-3.2 kg). However, ones that have a laptop pocket usually weigh a bit more, between 6-7.5 lbs (2.7-3.4 kg) because of additional materials used in the construction.

Other Things to Look out for Before Buying Carry-on Suitcases With a Laptop Compartment

  • Durability: Some hardshell suitcases are prone to cracks, dents, and scratches, while soft shell suitcases may rip and tear. The most durable hardside material is aluminum, but aluminum suitcases tend to cost a lot and also weigh pretty much, so plastic options are much more available. The best plastic is polycarbonate, as it’s lightweight and resistant to cracks. ABS is a cheaper plastic that’s also lightweight but is more likely to crack. The best fabric used in fabric suitcases is ballistic nylon, followed by regular nylon, and finally polyester. That said, some polyester bags are actually pretty durable if properly manufactured.
  • Moveability: You want to move quickly and effortlessly through the airport, so make sure to check out the type of wheels in the luggage you are planning to buy. Generally, though, spinner wheels (4 wheels) are the best option for smooth surfaces, like pavement, concrete, tile, etc., and rolling wheels (2 wheels) are better on tougher surfaces, like gravel and cobblestone. Spinners are also more likely to break off because they “stick out” from the main shape of the suitcase while rolling inline wheels have a more integrated, robust design. It’s also worth checking out how many handles the suitcase comes with – it should have top and side handles, and ideally bottom handles as well so that it’s easier to pick up and lift to the overhead compartments.
  • Packing capacity: Longer, leisure trips require more packing space as opposed to short business trips, so try to get a suitcase that offers enough packing space. The maximum space that carry-ons usually offer without going over the size limits, is about 40-45 liters. Also, carry-ons with two wheels instead of four usually offer a bit more space due to a more efficient design. Some other useful packing features to look out for include zipper and mesh compartments, pockets, tie-down panels, suiter compartments, hanger brackets, TSA-approved toiletry pouches, expandable zippers, and wet pockets.
  • Security: So that your valuables stay safe, it’s advised to purchase a suitcase with a TSA-approved lock. If you’ll need to check it in, a TSA lock will ensure that the airport security agents will be able to get inside without breaking the lock. They also reduce the chances of theft during baggage handling. If you won’t be checking your bag, they’re still useful in public transport and cafes, because they ensure that the zippers can’t be opened by thieves while you aren’t looking at your bag.
  • Brand reliability and warranty: To ensure that you are getting value for money and that you get good mileage out of your luggage, go with more reliable brands, like Travelpro, Samsonite, Briggs & Riley, Tumi, Delsey, Osprey, Eagle Creek, Thule, or others. This will ensure that the bag is made up to higher quality standards, and their customer support will most likely be easier to get in touch with and more forthcoming. It’s also necessary to look at what warranty it comes with, especially if it’s an expensive bag. Keep an eye out on the warranty terms though, as most warranties cover only basic manufacturing defects, and don’t cover airline damage, broken zippers, wheels, and other accidents.

The removable wet pocket is also very useful for storing your toiletries.

It’s made from an ABS/PC composite plastic, with a scratch-resistant, 3-layer finish. Polycarbonate is the most durable plastic used in luggage, and ABS is the cheapest and least durable. The ABS/PC mix generally achieves the best of both worlds – providing optimal durability while keeping the total manufacturing costs low. So even though this suitcase is a bit more likely to crack than pure polycarbonate ones, it will still be durable enough to last you years .

You’ll find yourself gliding through airports as the four double, rubber-coated spinner wheels roll and turn with ease. The rubber coating ensures a better grip and quieter roll. The wheels are solid and sturdy and have the added advantage of being detachable, so they may be replaced in the unlikely event that they break. It comes with top and side handles, which will help you carry it on stairs and other places.

The spacious interior is expandable, providing you with an additional 1.57 inches of packing capacity if needed. This is really useful for return flights when you’ve bought a bit too much than initially expected. The cross straps hold your belongings firmly in place while the dividers help to organize your items easily. There are also multiple pockets which makes it possible to store your smaller items, so they do not move around during travel.

The Level 8 Grace Carry-on weighs 9 lbs, which is quite a lot. In fact, it’s 1.89 lbs heavier than the average weight of similarly-sized hardside carry-ons. It’s most likely due to a slightly more robust construction and various pockets, compartments, and organizing options that this suitcase comes with, which all add more weight. So it’s a bit too heavy if you’ll be flying with budget airlines that have stricter weight requirements for hand luggage.

Available in four elegant colors and offering friendly after-sales customer service, the Level 8 Grace is an excellent buy at a great price .

4. Best Underseater: Samsonite 16-Inch Underseat Spinner

10 Best Carry-On Suitcases With A Laptop Compartment 15

Samsonite is well known for offering travelers luggage of distinction. They pride themselves on producing suitcases that are not only durable and reliable but also stylish and innovative. This suitcase is no exception because it’s sturdy as a rock and still looks good and professional .

The overall dimensions of this suitcase are 16.5″ x 13.75″ x 9.0″ (41.91 x 34.93 x 22.86 cm), so it fits easily under most airline seats. That said, it’s recommended that you check with the airline you are traveling with for their underseat storage capacity, as these may differ from one provider to another. Traveling only with an understater is great for short, 1-2 day business trips because you’ll need to carry less stuff.

The main compartment of the bag contains a padded laptop compartment, but it can only accommodate a laptop of up to 13.3 inches (33.78 cm) . The bag comes with a USB port which allows you to charge your devices while in transit. That said, you’ll need to use your own power bank because it isn’t included. There are additional exterior pockets on the front and side of the suitcase to accommodate smaller items like credit cards and pens.

Mobility is a breeze as the 360 degrees multi-directional spinner wheels roll effortlessly. The compact size means that this bag is lightweight, making it easy to maneuver. It is also fitted with an ergonomic push button handle that locks in different heights to accommodate people of different heights. The suitcase has a smart sleeve on the back, making it possible to place it over the handle of most upright suitcases.

The Samsonite Underseat Carry-on comes with a limited 3-year warranty , but given its affordable price point, it does offer value for money. You will have peace of mind knowing that your most essential travel items are right under your feet and easily accessible.

6. Best Value: Coolife 20-Inch Carry-On with Laptop Compartment

10 Best Carry-On Suitcases With A Laptop Compartment 17

The Coolife 20-inch carry-on suitcase with a pocket compartment is made from ABS/PC composite, which provides good durability if taken care after. It’s coated with a textured finish, so you do not have to worry about your bag being scratched easily. 7. Most Innovative: Hanke 20-Inch Carry-On with Front Laptop Pocket

10 Best Carry-On Suitcases With A Laptop Compartment 18

You will be hard-pressed to find a suitcase that still looks beautiful trip after trip, but the Hanke 20-inch carry-on is in a class of its own. This unique frosted cover will also help you to identify your luggage with ease.

The functional design provides for a front laptop compartment allowing you to safely store away your devices in a padded pocket but also making it easily reachable when you are required to remove it for security checks. The laptop compartment is big enough to fit a 15.6-inch laptop and a 9.7-inch iPad , as well as important documents and accessories. The main compartment has a large capacity and is fitted with elastic cross straps to keep your clothing and other items secure during travel.

An innovative addition is the strong aluminum frame which reinforces the body of the suitcase and protects it against impact . The combination of the aero-grade material and reinforcing rivets improves the strength of the suitcase, so it is not easily damaged.

This carry-on is so unique, because it doesn’t have two compartments. Instead, you can access everything from the front pocket. This reduces the need of having two zippers and two separate locks – instead, it has a single TSA-approved lock to protect everything. To access the main compartment, you have to unzip the padded laptop pocket, which opens up in 180 degrees for easy access .

The eight double-spinner wheels are equipped with silent technology, which lowers friction with surfaces, thereby reducing the noise made by the rolling wheels. The 360-degree rotation makes for easy mobility on various surfaces. The 4-Step telescoping handle is adjustable for your comfort. It can be conveniently stored away when not in use and provides ease of movement when extended.

The Paris Titanium model is backed by a worldwide limited 10-year warranty , so you can be certain that you are purchasing a quality product. This ultra-light, durable trendy suitcase is perfect for a quick getaway or a short business trip.

9. Best Maneuverability: LEVEL8 Road Runner Pro 20-Inch Carry-On

10 Best Carry-On Suitcases With A Laptop Compartment 20

If ease of movement and exceptional maneuverability is a priority for you, then look no further than the Level 8 Road Runner 20-inch carry-on with a laptop compartment. Priced a little higher than other hardside suitcases, this sleek little suitcase offers value for money. The multi-directional wheels and telescoping handle combine to offer you easy control and movement .

It’s built from 100% pure polycarbonate, which is the most durable plastic used in hardside luggage , which means that it’s very unlikely to crack from accidents. It is pretty heavy, weighing 8.7 lbs (3.94 kg), so it isn’t ideal for budget airlines, but it is is you’re from the USA, where the weight restrictions for hand luggage are much looser. You can also rest assured that your valuables will be safe as the suitcase comes fitted with built-in airline-approved TSA locks.

The spacious interior with zipper pockets and cross straps takes the hassle out of packing for those short trips. Unlike the Level 8 Grace, the Road Runner is not expandable, so it has limited packing capacity. Some customers complained that overpacking the compartments cause them to bulge. The suitcase is, therefore, best suited for short business trips. It is stylish yet practical and is available in three classic colors.

10 Best Carry-On Suitcases With A Laptop Compartment 21

But stylish designs are not all you will get as the Rockland brand is also committed to offering suitcases that are functional and affordable. The Rockland Titan Hardside Carry-on offers all this and more.

Made from ABS material, the suitcase is lightweight and riggid, so the contents of your luggage are protected. However, because ABS is more likely to crack under pressure (because it doesn’t flex too much), the suitcase itself might develop cracks over time. The carry-on measures 22 X 13 x 9 inches (55.88 x 33.02 x 22.86 cm) with wheels, so it complies with airline regulations for a carry-on suitcase.

It comes with a padded laptop pocket that fits a 15.6-inch laptop . Your device will be safe and protected, and easily accessible. There are multiple additional pockets for convenient and organized packing, and the expandable features allow you a greater packing capacity.

  • One of the best-crafted bags on the market
  • 40L = lots of room
  • Sleek and stylish

  • Tons of pockets and features
  • Mixed reviews on straps/comfort

#2. Tortuga Laptop Backpack

Runner up – best travel laptop backpack.

travel luggage computer

  • Capacity: 24L
  • Dimensions: 48.5 x 27.5 x 18 cm (19.1 x 10.8 x 7.1 in)
  • Weight: 2.1 lb (0.95 kg)
  • Main Material: Shell 200
  • Size of Laptop Compartment: 16″

The Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack is the smaller version of their original Setout pack. This bag is a 24-liter masterpiece for anyone looking for a smaller laptop bag that feels and looks great. We might have rated it second best travel computer backpack but for many this will come out on top. The Setout Laptop Backpack has plenty of organisational features including mesh pockets and a super-secure area for your laptop. The Setout Laptop is marketed as a laptop bag for those who do lots of air travel and we find it to be a great bag to take onto planes as its easy to find our stuff, and it fits snuggly under seats (even on Ryanair).

Personally I love how compact this bag is – 24L is normally a little small for me but I make an exception for this. While I personally miss having a water bottle pocket on the side, the grab handle is a nice touch for those occasions when my back and neck needs a rest. The zips also open really smoothly. Its size made it feel great to wear day in day out and the quality of the materials felt like it would cope well with daily abuse!

Read our complete Tortuga Setout Laptop Backpack Review here.

  • Sexy, minimalist design
  • Tons of features
  • Might be too small for some

#3. Harber London Slim Laptop Pack

Leather laptop backpack.

Harber London Slim Backpack

  • Capacity: 18l
  • Dimensions: 43 x 29 x 9 cm (16.9 x 11.4 x 3.5 in)
  • Weight: 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs)
  • Main Material: Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather and waterproof cotton canvas

The Harber London Slim Laptop backpack is stylish and functional. It is quite literally a laptop backpack and won’t fit too much more in (although they do make bigger packs so take a look at their site) and just perfect for minimalists who want something a little bit special. The pack is crafted from Premium Full Grain Leather which feels really classy, soft and supple to touch. The interior is nicely padded, there are loads of pockets for you cables as well as a handle if you want to carry it.

This pack is very different to the other pack on our list and isn’t really comparable to say the more versatile Tortuga. It is however perhaps the most classy and stylish and I felt pretty hip when testing out in my home city; it certainly has more sex appeal than the functional North Face. When they sent me this to try I was impressed. It is a niche product but that for the right person this would be the absolute perfect choice. What I really like is how minimalist it is – no unnecessary bulk and will look good if you’ve got a meeting to attend but want something more practical than a briefcase.

  • Durable and comfortable
  • High Quality Material
  • Not cheap…

4#. Osprey Metron

Best commuter laptop bag.

Osprey Metron

  • Dimensions: 19.29H X 12.99W X 11.02D IN
  • Weight: 2.739 LBS
  • Main Material: 500D recycled high tenacity nylon

At 24l, the Osprey Metron is a well sized daypack which will accommodate your laptop, and lunch quite nicely. There is of course a padded laptop pouch along with enough pockets and pouches for keys, cards and pens. The compression straps are also a nice touch and we appreciated the way we could fasten the backpack down so it deint you won’t stick out like a tortoise and barge into people (as much) when you crowd onto the morning train.

TI personally used this backpack for day to use for a good while before I replaced it with an Osprey Quasar – the latter I found could also be used to double up as a hiking backpack. Though we’ve included it here as the best bag for commuters, our team really loved how versatile this bag felt. Osprey is known for their outdoor bags and our team felt this one was suited to just about anything you could throw at it, from hiking to biking into the office. All in, the quality of the materials, the solid build and integrated rain cover make this daypack tough enough for any adventure!

  • Osprey offer a robust guarantee
  • There aren’t any cons

5#. Gulu Made Inspire Backpack

Most ethical laptop backpack.

Gulu Motivator Pack

  • Capacity: 25 liters
  • Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 9 in
  • Weight: 2.0 lbs
  • Main Material: 500D nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15.6 inches

The Gulu Made brand set up shop building a backpacking factory in Uganda and has entrusted the local community with making sustainable backpacks built to last. These bags are designed and built by local tribes. The women of Gulu took modern comfort features into account, adding on water bottle holders and ten different organization pockets with an extra computer sleeve.

Not only is this pack amongst the most stylish I have tried, it is also genuinely well made and the organisational potential is great – the Inspire is the most spacious Gulu-made pack on the market and offers everything you need to commute in a sustainable style. If you are after an ethical product , this is a good on and if you love ethical travel gear, we have a cracking vegan backpack round-up on the site.

  • Ethical brand
  • Pretty inner lining
  • Good organisational potential
  • Not waterproof

#6. Incase Compass Backpack

Best backpack for 17-inch laptops.

travel luggage computer

  • Capacity: 27 liters
  • Dimensions: 18 x 11.75 x 5.25 in
  • Weight: 1.39 lbs
  • Main Material: Light-weight Flight Nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 16 inches

Incase is known for making stylish business and laptop backpacks. Expandable, easy to travel with, and well-padded, the Incase Compass is also our choice for the best 17-inch laptop backpack! The bag itself is made out of 300D polyester, and the black option has a triple-coated weather-resistant front panel. The shoulder straps are made with breathable mesh, and the back panels are padded too. The main compartment has plenty of storage space, and it expands by 35% to fit all of the clothes you may need. You can also maintain a slimmer profile if you are just using it for layovers and day trips.

While I personally don’t like the look of this one, we found it to be one of the best laptop bags for travel because of the way the laptop sleeve is set up. This backpack is smaller than others on this list, but the Incase Compass makes use of its space and we hardly felt the limitations. All in, what we loved most about this bag was how the laptop had its own dedicated pocket away from everything else.

  • Great for on-the-go travel
  • Fits up to a 16-inch laptop
  • Padded back panels
  • Zippable laptop compartment makes security checks a breeze
  • Might be too small for long term travelers

#7. Gregory Rune

Best commuter laptop backpack.

Gregory Rhune Backpack

  • Capacity: 28 liters
  • Dimensions: 19″ x 11″ x 9″
  • Weight: 2.74 lbs
  • Main Material: 210D nylon and 420D high-density nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 15 inches

The Gregory Rhune brings a durable and sustainable approach to the everyday backpack concept. All fabrics used in this pack are made from recycled materials resulting in a 51% in the production cycles carbon footprint.  However, eco-credentials aside, this is a genuinely bloody good pack with an excellent  attention to details. Designed for an active user the Rhune packs have an integrated shoulder harness pocket that is perfect for ear buds, transit passes, or mints.

The pack is accessed by a top-lid opening that pulls back – that’s not an opening style that I am too used to but it’s fine and actually makes packing and unpacking very easy. Inside the pack, the main compartment is split into 3 handy compartments including a very generous laptop compartment. To the touch, the material used in construction of the Gregory Rhune feels quite strong and durable and yet, the pack feels very light to carry. Overall, this is a great backpack for commutes and for day travel.

  • Mid-Weight 0.925 kg
  • Made from recycled materials
  • Not great for hiking
  • Small water bottle pocket

#8. Timbuk 2 Lane Commuter

Best small laptop backpack for travel.

travel luggage computer

  • Capacity: 18 liters
  • Dimensions: 10.8″ x 5.91″ x 17.7″
  • Weight: 2.4 lb
  • Main Material: 400D nylon faille

The Timbuk 2 is quite similar to the Incase above. It’s a smaller laptop TSA-friendly backpack that works great for both travel and work, and is one of the best lightweight laptop backpacks. There is a side pocket for your water bottle and a front pocket that is useful for your passport and boarding pass so I would gladly take this onto a flight. The main compartment has plenty of space, and the one in front of it has three smaller compartments for organization.

This backpack is comfortable too – it feels nice against the back and on the shoulders. The drawback about this bag is that it’s not big enough to take on most long backpacking trips; however, if you are just looking for a bag for everyday use, and quick weekend trips, this is a sleek, low-profile backpack that will keep all your stuff organized. Our team loved how balanced the weight felt in this pack when their laptops were stowed.

  • Laptop compartment zips away for easy security checks
  • Dedicated tablet pocket
  • 5-year warranty
  • Great for weekend trips or quick getaways (or super light travelers)

#9. LowePro ProTactic 450

Best laptop backpack for travel photographers.

lowepro photography carry on backpack

  • Capacity: Not specified
  • Dimensions: 13.78″ x 9.06″ x 20.08″
  • Weight: 6.28 lbs
  • Main Material: 900D and 1680D nylon

If you are a serious photographer or have aspirations to be – this bag is next-level.

The LowePro ProTactic 450 is far and away the most functional and stylish backpack for photographers and videographers. The most impressive thing of the ProTactic is how big it is and how well organized the compartments are. Fitting up to two DSLR’s, a 15″ laptop and some drones, this bag is versatile and able to handle all of your tech needs . It’s practically a mobile office! You can go out shooting, pull out your laptop, and begin editing right then and there.

I don’t use a DSLR and so didn’t actually use this as a camera bag. Still, it is one of the best laptop backpacks for many, many reasons. If you want to learn more about the Lowpro, be sure to visit our post on the best camera bags , where we go into more detail.

  • Fits 1 or 2 DSLRs
  • Four camera-access points
  • Ventilation and back support
  • Laptop pocket and additional accessories
  • Only useful for photographers

#10. AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac

Best laptop messenger bag.

aer city messenger bag

  • Capacity: 12 liters
  • Dimensions: 16″ x 11″ x 4.5″
  • Weight: 1.8 lbs
  • Main Material: VX-42 X-Pac™ sailcloth exterior by Dimension-Polyant

AER has done it again! They’ve taken the same ergonomic principles that were used for their laptop backpack and applied them to a messenger bag. The result: an amazing laptop messenger bag that is very efficient, effective, and, above all, useful. The AER Travel Sling 2 X-Pac is very useful. It comfortably holds a 16-inch MacBook and can even hold a camera kit with a few lenses after some rearranging. The fact that the interior of this bag can be rearranged, much like a camera bag, makes it stand out from the rest as well. At the end of the day, this is more than a messenger bag.

We were quite intrigued about giving this a go as many are used to the traditional backpack setup. To be honest, this is a great bag but after a while I did start to feel the weight of my laptop handing around my neck. Still, I loved how compact and lowkey the bag was whilst also providing a surprising amount of storage and organisation and I was also impressed with how comfortable the padded strap felt on one shoulder.

  • Customizable interior.
  • Sleek, ergonomic design.
  • Top-quality manufacturing.
  • Not as big as the backpack.
  • Like the backpack, straps can be awkward.

#11. Minaal Carry On 2.0 Backpack

Best travel backpack for europe.

best travel backpack for europe

  • Capacity: 9.8 liters
  • Dimensions: 16.5″ x 10.6″ x 4.7″
  • Weight: 1.76 lbs
  • Main Material: 1680D Cordura ballistic nylon
  • Laptop compartment size: 13 inches

The Minaal Carry On has updated their original travel backpack to the 2.0, and it’s loaded with new features that improve its functionality, and make it one of the best laptop backpacks for travel! This backpack has the perfect dimensions carry-on any flight (22 x 14 x 9 inches), including those strict European budget airlines, which is one of the reasons why we chose it as one of the best backpacks for travel in Europe. The main compartment zips all the way open like a suitcase which I find some getting used to, but then found to be absolutely great. The larger side is perfect for packing your clothes, shoes, and other items.

All in, we loved this sleek and professional-looking bag, but one of the standout features they told us about what they particularly loved was the zippers. Not only are they super strong and smooth, but they’ve got built-in loops for locking them and keeping your laptop secure. The Minaal Carry-On is made from heavy-duty nylon, so the fabric does a solid job repelling water. The shoulder straps and removable hip straps pack away easily for transit, and the strap system and cushioned back panel foam allow for ultimate comfort.

  • Perfect carry on dimensions
  • Removable hip strap
  • Rain cover that packs into itself
  • Locking zippers
  • Suspended laptop sleeve helps protect laptop if you drop your bag

#12. GoRuck GR1

Most durable travel laptop backpack.

GR1 durable backpack

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Dimensions: 21.5″ x 13.5″ x 7.5″
  • Weight: 3.4 lbs
  • Main Material: Waterproof sailcloth and ballistic

Another one of the best-organized backpacks, 26-litre GoRuck GR1 was designed and built for war zones and cities alike by a former Army Green Beret to be extremely durable and adaptable. For one, this is the most durable backpack on this list, designed for any weather and climate. The YKK zippers perform in sandstorms, and the 1000 Cordura material is rainproof.

This bag is also extremely comfortable. The shoulder straps are padded to handle heavy loads (like 400 pounds), and this backpack is designed to sit high so the weight doesn’t hang on your shoulders. Above all we loved what just how bloody hard wearing these beasts are. What I loved less was the price tag though.

  • Most durable backpack for laptops
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Strength tested
  • Can fit 17 inch laptop

#13. Fjallraven Kanken Laptop Backpack

A simple and easy to use laptop backpack.

best carry on laptop bag fjallraven kanken

Fjallraven is one of the most recognizable backpack brands out there. Seriously, you can’t walk a mile in the city and not see someone sporting one of these boxy bags as they appeal to just about every type of person. The Fjallraven Kanken, one of the company’s flagship models, can also be used as a traveling laptop backpack. They are spacious enough to a hold a 15″ computer, include a nice dedicated laptop sleeve, and are pretty resistant to the elements. If you’re looking for something quick and easy, not to mention in-vogue, then buying all Fjallraven Kanken wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Fjallraven’s do have their limits though. I personally find their boxy design is a little awkward sometimes, although these bags are still comfortable to wear. If you need an everyday backpack, and not JUST a backpack for traveling, it’s hard to go wrong with the Fjallraven Kanken. It’s proven itself over and over and will probably keep on doing just that.

  • Rugged, water-resistant material
  • Very easy to use
  • Great for everyday use
  • Less protective padding

#14. The Roll Top Stubble & Co

Best hipster laptop backpack.

Stubble and Co Roll Top

We recently came across Stubble & Co and tried a bunch of their packs for ourselves – honestly we were seriously impressed by most of them. The Roll Top is a great hipster-style 20L bag perfect for carrying around your laptop as well as having heaps of room for your other accessories. What really makes it stand out for a day pack is that the laptop compartment is in a separate pocket on the back of the bag. This both makes it mega secure (especially for a roll top) and also saves the massive main compartment for everything else.

Internally the main compartment is one massive space with a selection of pockets and organisers attached to the other side of the laptop compartment/ back panel. This works well giving you some level of organisation whilst also being super roomy.

  • Capable of carrying laptops up to 16”
  • Roll top makes it expandable
  • Durable and weather resistant material
  • Could do with more internal organisation
  • Would like an internal zip as well as the roll top

#15 Tom Toc T73-x

Hottest new laptop pack.

The Navigator-T66 Travel Laptop Backpack is the perfect travel companion for digital nomads. It offers a large capacity along with many compartments for organisation. The size is generally perfect for 5-7 days of light packing.

I chose this backpack as my travel bag for all my weekend getaway trips while backpacking through Southeast Asia. It comfortably fits my stuff for weekend getaways and helps me stay organised with the handy laptop sleeve.

I really love all the compartments included; they help me stay extremely organised. It has a large capacity for longer trips and It’s easy to find most of my belongings. The only downside is its build for a woman. I find the bag to be a bit big and bulky on me. But I love the large capacity for longer trips. I find it easy to find most of my belongings.

  • Ace organisation capacity
  • Durable, high quality and stylish
  • Not large enough for long trips
  • Maybe kinda bulky

Best Laptop Backpack for Travel Overall

1. volher laptop backpack.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This laptop backpack from Volher is the best option for most travellers, combining practical storage with an eye-catching, vibrant design. Inside the bag’s main compartment, there’s a padded sleeve for any 15.6-inch laptop and open storage for clothes, snacks, or other travel essentials. You can store drinks in the padded mesh side pockets, and hide your valuables in the anti-theft back pocket.

Volher’s backpack sports a water-resistant polyester fabric, so if you’re caught in the rain, water droplets just roll right off and all your belongings stay dry. Its durable fabric makes this backpack an excellent choice for hiking trips or other outdoor excursions, especially if you choose one of the bright, high-visibility color options. With padded mesh on the back and the shoulder straps, it’s comfortable to wear for long hours.

This travel bag also has a special feature: a built-in USB charging port. The port itself is on the bag’s left side, and there’s a cable inside you can connect to a power bank. Then, while you’re hiking or walking around Disney World, you can easily charge your phone without needing to take the backpack off or hold onto a power bank.

The Mancro Travel Backpack features a padded sleeve for 15.6-inch laptops, a spacious main compartment with room for a few changes of clothes, a side pocket for water bottles and an integrated USB port for portable power banks. The outside is made of water-resistant polyester, which is always nice to have on a travel backpack. It also includes a little combination lock you can use on the zippers, but it's not the sturdiest and makes quick access to the main compartment inconvenient.

5. herschel pop quiz laptop backpack.

If you want a laptop backpack for travel that balances looks and features, check out the Herschel Pop Quiz. Herschel is known for their stylish backpacks and the Pop Quiz is not exception. It's available in a ton of different colors and patterns, including the unique paint pour pattern we reviewed.

The real highlight of Herschel backpacks is the laptop sleeves. They're some of the softest and cushiest out there, lined with a smooth, padded black velvet that's sure to keep your laptop safe. The Pop Quiz has a 15-inch laptop sleeve and a spacious main compartment with room for two or three days of clothing, snacks and a book or two. The zipper pocket on the front was a bit hard to open in our testing, but that does make it a good anti-theft pocket since pick pocketers will have a tough time opening it, too.

Best Utility Laptop Backpack for Travel

6. targus legend iq laptop backpack.

If you're the type of traveler who packs with the motto "better to have and not need", you'll appreciate the wealth of pockets, space and organization on the Targus Legend IQ backpack. This is a great laptop backpack for anyone who likes to bring a lot of electronics with them or needs to pack for a longer trip.

The Targus Legend IQ has multiple zippered compartments and a built-in media pocket with aux cable passthrough into the shoulder strap. There's plenty of room to organize charging cables, headphones, power banks, your Nintendo Switch or ASUS ROG Ally, a tablet and up to a 16-inch laptop.

The basic, plain black design of this backpack puts practicality over fashion, but that's part of what makes it a great utility backpack. You won't have to worry about running out of packing space for all your favorite devices and travel essentials with this one.

See our full Targus Legend IQ Laptop Backpack review .

In many ways, the search for the perfect travel laptop backpack is just like searching for a work- or school-dedicated backpack. Most importantly, consider what you’ll need in terms of total space and organizational compartments. Make sure the backpack you choose can accommodate your laptop, travel snacks and drinks, handheld gaming console or books to read for fun, however many changes of clothes you need for your trip, or anything else you’d typically bring along while traveling.

Many backpacks will list whether they can accommodate 15.6-inch or 17-inch laptops, and some brands will list the specific dimensions of the laptop sleeve or compartment within the backpack. In addition to comparing the measurements of your laptop to those advertised by a potential backpack, consider whether you want a dedicated zipper compartment for your laptop or if a padded sleeve inside the main compartment will do.

With laptop backpacks for travel specifically, there are two useful features to look out for: hidden pockets and a USB charging port. Some backpacks come equipped with a zipper compartment positioned on the side or the back of the bag, making it incredibly difficult or impossible for someone to pickpocket what’s inside. These pockets are perfect for your valuables, like your wallet, smartphone, or keys.

Then, some bags include a USB charging port accessible on one side of the backpack and a cable inside that you can attach to a power bank you own. This allows you to comfortably charge your phone without needing to carry the power bank while you walk around a theme park or sit in the backseat during a road trip. With some travel backpacks, you can slip your phone into a side pocket so you don’t need to carry it, but it’s easily accessible when you need it.

If you plan on traveling via plane, you should see if the backpack complies with TSA guidelines. Then, check with your airline to get minimum dimensions for overhead and under-seat luggage to ensure you won’t need to check your backpack at the last minute and pay a premium.

For backpacks going under the seat in front of you on a plane, it’s a smart choice to go with a water-resistant polyester fabric that’s easy to clean and can withstand accidental spills. Durable, water-resistant fabric is also a smart choice if the place you’re traveling to gets a lot of rain or if you’re exploring outdoors at the beach or on a mountain.

Therefore, after spending countless hours researching different laptop-friendly travel bags, some of which I have personally used, I am excited to share a list of our top picks with you.

These are our personal favorites that I believe can meet your travel needs and keep your laptop safe and secure.

Read on for more details.

What’s the best carry-on luggage with a laptop compartment?

Our recommended choices for the best carry-on bags with laptop compartments are the Nomatic Carry-On Pro for those who prefer suitcases, the SwissGear Travel Gear 1900 for backpack enthusiasts, and the Samsonite Underseater Spinner with built-in USB Port for those seeking an underseater option. These three selections are not only lightweight and durable, but they also offer protection for your electronic devices, while avoiding the inconvenience of checked luggage fees.

This section includes both hardside and softside suitcases with a laptop compartment.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Nomatic Carry-On Pro

As someone who likes to travel carry-on only, I can attest to the exceptional organizational features of this bag, which is sure to impress business travelers, minimalist digital nomads, and frequent flyers alike.

The bag’s exterior pocket features a tech compartment that provides easy access to your electronics and documents, making it the best carry on suitcase with a laptop compartment. In there, you’ll see several dividers and padded sleeves that allow you to store your laptop, tablet, power bank, headphones, and other gadgets without them becoming entangled or taking up extra space in the main compartment.

The package also includes a laptop tech case/sleeve (fits a 16″ Macbook Pro) that can be easily removed from the main compartment when you arrive at a cafe or go through security at the airport.

Despite its small carry-on size, this 29-liter carry-on is well-compartmentalized with folding panels and compression straps that allow you to pack 1-3 days’ worth of items inside. And if I require additional packing space, I can remove the tech case and slide it onto the handle, freeing up more room for my clothes.

What we also love

I also adore the fact that this carry on suitcase with laptop compartment which has a lifetime warranty , is crafted from Makrolon polycarbonate with silent Hinomoto spinner wheels, and YKK zippers , is both water-resistant and built to withstand years of use – whether you’re staying in airport hotels or pulling it along the cobblestone streets of Europe.

Additionally, based on my observations, I can attest that this business suitcase with laptop compartment is a highly fashionable accessory for any traveler’s ensemble, boasting a sleek exterior design with tasteful branding accents.

What we don’t love

What I don’t like about the Pro is its small carrying capacity, especially considering its steep price point, as echoed by reviews from users. The bag’s tech section takes up a significant portion of the main compartment’s usable space, limiting the amount of space available for other items.

As a result, I wouldn’t recommend this bag for trips lasting 3-5 days since the bag is not expandable and unable to accommodate many clothes and a pair of shoes, contrary to what the advertisement image portrays.

Coolife Carry-on Suitcase

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: COOLIFE Carry-on Suitcase

With over 3,300 Amazon shoppers singing its praises, it’s clear that this carry on suitcase with laptop compartment is a fan favorite.

Many of these satisfied shoppers have specifically highlighted the front pocket as one of the standout features, particularly for its ability to securely hold laptops up to 13.3 inches , along with documents and other small essentials.

One satisfied customer said that the pocket was easy to access for TSA or just to get it especially if you don’t have a backpack or just want somewhere to easily access that. Additionally, a business traveler commented that the suitcase was perfect for my business trip. They love that it has a place for my laptop and locks on it as well.

What’s more, this luggage is brimming with a plethora of practical features, including noiseless multidirectional wheels , locks that comply with TSA regulations, a multi-stage wheel handle , and convenient top and side grab handles for effortless lifting.

You’ll find its stunningly beautiful minimalist design to be almost as impressive as those of high-end brands. Regarding durability, the suitcase is crafted from a blend of anti-scratch ABS and polycarbonate hard-shell plastic.

While this material may not be as resilient as polycarbonate or polypropylene, from the reviews I’ve seen, it does offer flexibility and the ability to absorb impact when subjected to stress.

What we don’t love

The Coolife Carry-on offers fantastic value for its price, although it may not withstand frequent use or last as long as more durable and luxurious alternatives.

As I said earlier, the materials used are not of the highest quality, and there are some reviews about damaged handles, wheels, zippers, and/or dented exteriors. While it can last for a year or more, it’s more likely that it will start to fall apart after some time.

However, despite these limitations, the bag remains an economical and highly-rated luggage piece with a laptop compartment.

Travelpro Platinum Elite Expandable Carry-On

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Travelpro Platinum Elite Expandable Carry-On Suitcase

There are tons of awesome features that make this suitcase stand out, but my absolute favorite has got to be the handy organizational compartments.

And as a contender on the best carry on luggage with laptop compartment, it has got a padded laptop and a tablet sleeve so you can have your expensive and important gadgets on you without worrying about damage from bumps and knocks. Plus, it means you don’t have to carry around a separate bag for your laptop – hallelujah! But that’s not all.

The interior of the bag features a garment bag for suits or dresses (handy for business trips), accessory pockets, a TSA-compliant wet pocket for liquids, a tie-down system , and an expansion system that allows for up to 2 extra inches of packing space.

And guess what? Customers who have used the bag praise its compact size (measures 21x 14 x 9 inches), which fits most overhead bin spaces, as well as its built-in USB port for charging your phone.

What we also love

I also like that this model is particularly suitable for frequent flyers who are hard on their luggage, thanks to its strong nylon fabric, duraguard coating, and reinforced corners that show no signs of wear and tear, after years of use. Additionally, the zippers proved to be water-resistant , keeping the contents dry.

This softside suitcase not only impressed me with its exceptional durability, indicating that it can survive many, many trips, but it also comes in seven different colors and is backed by a lifetime warranty .

What we don’t love

While this bag offers the convenience of being expandable , it’s important to exercise caution when packing it. You have to be mindful of how much you put in it because the bag can become quite bulky when expanded and may end up exceeding the airline’s restrictions on carry-on size. To avoid any potential issues at the gate, my advice is to avoid overpacking and keep the bag within the allowed size limit.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Arlo Skye The Zipper Carry-On Max with Front Pocket

Based on my personal experience, the best carry-on luggage with a laptop compartment offers much more than a simple storage solution. These bags should come with smart features packaged in an attractive design.

With that in mind, I want to highlight the numerous A+ features of Arlo Skye carry-on luggage, such as a removable charger that is compliant with airline regulations, a TSA-approved lock , a leather luggage tag , antimicrobial interior lining, two shoe bags , a cotton storage cover, and a laundry bag .

And let’s not forget the conveniently accessible front pocket where you can store and quickly access items like your 15″ laptop , book, headphones, passport, and even a hoodie – essentially all your in-flight essentials. In my view, this eliminates the requirement for an additional carry-on item such as a backpack or laptop bag, effectively thwarting unexpected gate checks.

After going through customer feedback , it appears that the impact-resistant polycarbonate exterior , tamper-proof zippers, and the silent spinner wheels of this carry-on spinner luggage are of high quality and durability.

Arlo Skye has done an excellent job of designing the wheels to provide a smooth turning motion, and many customers have commented that the wheels glide effortlessly, almost like butter.

The 47L carry-on is available in five vibrant colors, and from what I have observed, they are not very common. Therefore, you’ll have no trouble standing out with your unique carry-on with a laptop pocket.

In my view, the cost of the Arlo Skpe Carry-On Max is a disadvantage, particularly considering that competing brands like Away and Monos , which have greater brand recognition and offer similar carry-on luggage with pockets, are priced more affordably. Additionally, its hard shell adds some extra weight to the luggage, even when it’s empty.

In comparison to the Monos Carry-On Pro, which weighs 7.8 lbs, and Away’s The Carry-On with Pocket at 7.7 lbs, the Carry-On Max is heavier, weighing in at 8.1 lbs without any items inside. This aspect is crucial to keep in mind when traveling internationally since several foreign airlines have weight restrictions for carry on spinner bags.

Another prevalent issue raised by customers is that the Arlo Skpe Carry-On Max is prone to scratching easily. For instance, John W mentioned, “I haven’t had my bag for too long, but I love it so far. That said, the bag scratches very easily. Mine is black and scratched already….I haven’t checked it once.”

The Delsey Paris Helium Aero luggage has earned a place on my list of best luggage with laptop compartment because it is highly regarded as one of the most durable and well-reviewed options available. Additionally, multiple online reviews praise its remarkably lightweight design and convenient features.

And as the best carry on luggage with computer compartment, it features a front compartment that fits laptops up to 15.6 inches , with a convenient front-access design that eliminates the need to unzip the entire bag to access your device.

In addition, the bag includes two spacious internal main compartments , complete with tie-down straps, zippered dividers, and multiple pockets that allow for effortless organization of your belongings whether you’re embarking on a brief excursion or a lengthier journey.

Another significant advantage is its expandable feature, which allows you to pack extra items without exceeding weight limits. All in all, this bag is certain to simplify your packing process.

The Delsey Paris Helium Aero shares a key feature with the Arlo Skpe suitcase: both are constructed from 100% polycarbonate hard shells, rendering them both lightweight and durable. This makes them capable of withstanding some rough handling.

Additionally, the Helium Aero’s lightweight design is augmented by features such as a sturdy grab handle, robust telescopic handle , and multi directional spinner wheels , making it easy to lift and maneuver.

What we don’t love

Several Amazon reviewers who have traveled with this bag have left negative reviews citing issues such as broken handles, damaged wheels, and faulty zippers, so that’s something to keep in mind when handling this bag.

Spirit Kat reported that the handle of the luggage got stuck halfway on their way home from the airport, which they believe is the most important feature for comfortable rolling.

On the other hand, Elaina Jackson mentioned that the zipper of the luggage kept coming undone, even though their suitcases were not overpacked and had plenty of room for their belongings.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: LEVEL8 Pro Carry-On

The LEVEL8 Pro is not one of those flimsy, carry-on suitcases with some afterthought pockets that you find on some bags. No, no, no. The laptop pocket on the exterior of this thing is serious business. It’s padded , easy to open, and can hold laptops up to 15.6 inches ! And the interior is just as impressive. It has a spacious main compartment with two zipper pockets and compression straps to keep your clothes and belongings in place. And just like the LEVEL8 Textured Carry-on which has held up well during my many travels, the Pro suitcase is also finely crafted with aerospace-grade Bayer Makrolon material that is water-resistant, lightweight, and incredibly sturdy.

Plus, it comes with a TSA lock , 360° spinner wheel, a USB charging port to easily connect to your electronic devices, and an interior compartment for your power bank.

My other favorite thing about this bag is how sleek and stylish it looks. This isn’t some boring old bag that you’ll be embarrassed to be seen with. Oh no, this is a bag that will make you look like a seasoned traveler who knows what they’re doing.

And like the rest of the best carry-on luggage with padded laptop sleeves on this list, this one is suitable for most aircraft overhead bins with a dimension of 14.5” x 9.3” x 21.6” (measurement includes the wheels).

It is worth noting that the pristine appearance of this suitcase may not last very long, as some users have reported that the smooth shell is prone to scratching . Unfortunately, this is something I also noticed with my Level8 luggage , and there don’t seem to be any measures in place to mitigate the visibility of these scratches.

Other than that, if you need a carry-on bag with a padded laptop compartment, then the LEVEL8 Pro Carry-on with Laptop Pocket is perfect.

Here, we’ll discuss backpacks that have protected compartments or sleeves for transporting laptops.

This bag not only won me over with its affordable price but also has impressive organizational features, which are worth boasting about. With its generous 31L capacity, this best carry on backpack provides ample space to stash all your travel essentials, while ensuring easy accessibility for the modern, tech-savvy explorer.

For example, it fits a whopping 17″ laptop and tablet and is padded to safeguard your precious tech gadgets from any nasty knocks or falls, even if you happen to drop the bag in a rush

And here’s the icing on the cake – the SmartScan lay-flat system ! Just pop open the laptop and tablet compartment, and voila – they lay flat for easy TSA screening. How’s that for a hassle-free travel experience?

In addition, you’ll find a padded media pocket with a handy headphones hole, an organizer pocket, stretchable mesh pockets on the sides for your water bottle, zippered compartments for accessories, and even a loop holder to keep your sunglasses secure.

According to the company’s website, the bag measures 18.5 x 13.25 x 9 inches , but I found that its actual luggage dimensions are 21 x 15.5 x 6 inches . Despite this, the bag is still compact enough to function as carry-on luggage stowed in the overhead bin.

Now, here’s the kicker – this backpack has amassed a whopping 12,000 five-star ratings on Amazon ! That’s right, people all over the world have put their trust in this backpack for their travels, and it has not let them down.

And for carrying comfort, it has  contoured padded shoulder  straps that can easily be adjusted to suit your frame and a  heavily-padded airflow back panel  for excellent ventilation and ergonomic support for those long hours of wear

I have a concern about the 1900 backpack as it lacks a chest strap that provides additional support. This becomes problematic when carrying heavy loads as it can strain your back when the backpack is filled.

Additionally, some customers have reported that the zippers are not very durable, often coming undone easily, which can be frustrating.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L

The Outbreaker is one of the few backpacks I’ve found that meets all of my requirements for long-term and digital nomad travel.

That said, it could be argued that the Travel Backpack from Tortuga is the improved (or better) version of the Outbreaker . It weighs less, only 2kg, and comes in intentionally smaller sizes of 40L and 30L , to comply with the increasingly strict carry-on size limits both domestically in the US and internationally.

And if you’re wondering why I think this is one of the best carry on with laptop compartment, the fleece-lined and padded laptop sleeve is located at the back of the bag, close to your body for the best weight distribution. It fits laptops up to 17 inches with tablets and there’s enough padding that you could probably even skip a case.

Plus, with 30 liters of space and convenient pockets, this bag is said to be able to hold enough clothes and all of your other essentials like toiletries, water bottles, a key clip, and more for a 2-5 trip .

Another feature that appeals to me is that it is a front-loading backpack, allowing for easy access to your belongings without having to navigate through a maze of straps and buckles.

Similar to the Outbreaker , this backpack comes with a hip belt capable of bearing weight and an adjustable harness system that can be personalized to fit your body, which is particularly advantageous for carrying heavy loads or traveling long distances.

Moreover, the contoured back panel, load lifters , (removable) sternum straps, and padded straps all contribute to comfortable wear.

Unlike its predecessor, this bag is less boxy, which is a feature that always bothered me. And it is made with 100% recycled and water-resistant fabric that is both lightweight and exceptionally durable.

To begin with, this best carry-on backpack is relatively expensive and tailored toward regular travelers. Therefore, it may not be suitable for other purposes such as daily commutes or hiking due to its size.

Furthermore, a few users have pointed out that the water bottle pocket becomes useless when the bag is at full capacity and that there are numerous straps, which can be distracting, especially when traveling on trains or buses.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: EVERKI Atlas Business Backpack

The Atlas Backpack is comfortable and practical, with multiple compartments (4 of em) and lots of pockets for efficient organization, all handy features to have in the best carry on luggage with laptop compartment.

The dedicated laptop compartment which fits a 17.3-inch laptop and tablet, opens up to 180 degrees , allowing for easy and convenient security checks.

The external pockets include a quick-access top pocket, zippered flap pocket, an innovative magazine sleeve, two water bottle pockets, and an organizer compartment. This means that your water bottle, passport, pens, keys, cables, and other essentials all have a designated spot to avoid you scrambling to find what you need in the security line.

And with its moderate 32L size, I believe the backpack is easy to maneuver in crowded places, such as airports, trains, and buses, without encroaching on the personal space of other passengers.

I really appreciate how the Atlas backpack’s five-point ergonomic strap system and padded back panel distribute weight evenly to prevent fatigue, while the strap management system keeps straps tidy and secure.

What’s more, it has a luggage pass-through sleeve , a bright orange interior for easy visibility, and a lifetime warranty , making it an excellent choice.

As much as I like the EVERKI Atlas Backpack, I wouldn’t use it for extended travel. Although it might suffice for short business trips, the main compartment is quite small and can only accommodate items for a few days only.

On top of that, the backpack is already quite heavy at 4 lbs when empty, and it can get even heavy when fully packed, and the water bottle pockets are a tight fit for larger bottles. But if you need a solid luggage for laptop, this one won’t let you down.

Matein 17” Laptop Backpack

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Matein 17” Laptop Backpack

While it may not bear a designer label or have the most striking style, I can confidently say that the Matein backpack is a reliable workhorse. It has exceeded my expectations in terms of performance and has garnered similar praise from over 68,000 other users.

I promise it’s really easy to stay organized with this 34L bag. It comes equipped with a tech compartment that has ample pockets and padding to safeguard your smartphone, tablet, and even a 15.6-inch laptop during transportation.

Measuring 18 x 12 x 7.8 inches, and weighing slightly over 1.5 pounds, this backpack is relatively compact. It’s perfect not only as a carry-on but also as an everyday commuter bag.

Moreover, it boasts an anti-theft pocket for added security and is available in two variants- one designed for a 15-inch laptop and another for a 17-inch laptop .

Equally important, the bag ensures comfortable carrying with excellent weight distribution. Its ventilation back design promotes airflow, and the shoulder straps are padded for back support.

Moreover, it features a foam-padded top handle for easy grab-and-go and a luggage strap that enables it to slide over a rolling suitcase, which always comes in handy when I’m rushing through the airport. And it’s under $30!

Remember that this budget-friendly bag is not the strongest piece of carry-on luggage with a laptop compartment, and if you use it frequently, it is unlikely to last more than a few years .

That said, if you’re just looking for something affordable, and practical, you can’t go wrong with the Matein backpack.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Herschel Tech Backpack

Herschel is renowned not only for creating excellent school backpacks but also for their travel backpacks.

Among them, the Travel Backpack is my personal favorite due to its spacious interior, contemporary design, and exceptional safeguarding for your laptop and other electronic gadgets.

The backpack includes a TSA-approved laptop compartment located at the back, which allows for quick and efficient security checks.

The laptop pocket is well-cushioned and lined with fleece to safeguard any 16″ laptop from scratches and provide gentle cushioning. Even if your backpack experiences a fall or an accidental drop, your laptop should stay unscathed.

The main compartment of the Herschel backpack is exceptionally spacious and includes several storage sleeves, whereas the front compartment boasts an organizer panel, ideal for smaller items such as passports, wallets, keys, and other miscellaneous belongings.

Furthermore, it is equipped with two water bottle pockets and an extra front compartment, providing space for any last-minute items you may need to pack.

What we also love

Oh, but wait, there’s more to love about this backpack! Crafted from ultra-durable Cordura ballistic fabric , this pack is a tough nut to crack – less susceptible to tearing and water damage than your average backpack.

Plus, the back panel is thoughtfully designed with ample padding and ventilation, ensuring comfortable wear, even on long treks. And if that weren’t enough, there’s a handy luggage strap on the back that lets you attach the backpack to the top of your suitcase.

After a thorough examination, the only downside I could spot in the Travel Backpack is the lack of a hip belt or sternum strap. In my opinion, these features are particularly useful for a 30L backpack like this, which can quickly become weighty when packed to the brim.

Best carry-on luggage with laptop compartment (weekender, totes, duffel)

Below, I have reviewed underseater, weekender, and duffel bags that come with laptop pockets.

I am impressed by the many unexpected features of Samsonite’s Spinner Underseater. It weighs just 2.5kg, fits under the seat of most airlines , and is made to last because, well, it’s Samsonite and they don’t scrimp on quality.

This bag may seem small, but don’t be fooled by its size – it boasts a surprisingly spacious interior complete with several pockets, including an integrated carry on luggage laptop pocket  that’s padded and specifically designed to protect your laptop.

In addition, there are two exterior pockets (both zippered) that are deep enough to hold items such as headphones, power adapters, chargers, a passport, and even snacks – because who doesn’t love a good snack on the go?

An   Amazon customer   was able to fit a week’s worth of clothing, two pairs of shoes, toiletries, and small items such as headphones, a deck of cards, and a charger in this bag. And even if you do not adhere strictly to minimalist packing, I still think you can get away with packing for a 3-4-day trip, and even more.

Even better, this bag is equipped with four multi directional spinner wheels and a push-button handle  for effortless navigation through busy airports and other crowded areas.

Additionally, Samsonite’s unwavering dedication to high-quality construction standards guarantees that you are investing in a bag that can endure considerable wear and tear.

The Samsonite underseat carry-on luggage with laptop compartment is perfect for both business and leisure trips, which is why I love it. It even comes with a built-in USB port , so you can conveniently charge your phone or other devices while on the move (( power bank is not included ). Additionally, the luggage sleeve on the back allows you to easily slide it over the handle of a larger rolling bag.

Cleverjourney.com and users of the Samsonite Underseat Carry-on Spinner have pointed out some downsides of the bag. These include the absence of a TSA lock and the laptop sleeve’s inability to accommodate laptops larger than 13 inches.

Additionally, accessing the main compartment on the go can be challenging, so it may not be the most convenient option if you need to reach your belongings quickly.

Furthermore, several users have complained about the quality of the zippers and handle , which can be wobbly and unreliable. Nonetheless, if you’re looking for modern, high-quality carry-ons, this is still an excellent choice.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: July Carry All Weekender

The July’s Carry All Weekender is a chameleon—perfect for work, flights, or weekend getaways. “I use this bag every day for work/life and while travelling. It’s so organized…Has made a big difference to travelling! Fits under the seat on the plane easily”, one user said.

The bag is designed with multiple compartments and pockets to provide an efficient organization for all your belongings. It includes a padded 16-inch laptop pocket secured with a press stud tab, a front access zip pocket, and a concealed external pocket.

With a generous 22L capacity , the bag’s interior is roomy enough to accommodate clothing, toiletries, a laptop, a phone charger, and other personal items needed for a short overnight trip.

In terms of style, I am enamored with the bag’s streamlined design, muted color palette, and subtle leather accents on the zippers and handles that enhance its sophisticated appearance. It is undoubtedly one of the most refined and stylish carry-on bags with laptop compartment.

Moreover, the bag exudes professionalism, making it easy to shift from a work-related journey to a weekend getaway with this duffel bag as your trusted companion.

Other thoughtful design details in this best laptop carry on luggage include an adjustable and removable shoulder strap  and a  pass-through band  for slipping onto your luggage handle, making it both comfortable and convenient to carry

This bag comes with a considerable price tag, and many of the negative reviews revolve around its limited capacity to hold more items. For instance, one user remarked, “ Great quality, well packaged and presented however just a whole lot smaller than I would ever expect from a weekender” .

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Beis the Weekender

Beis offers a practical weekender bag that can serve multiple purposes, including as a diaper bag, travel bag, or work bag. And the cherry on top?

This best cabin luggage with laptop compartment boasts a whopping 49-liter capacity, giving you ample space to pack everything you need, and then some! From daily essentials like a phone, wallet, keys, snacks, and clothes, to travel necessities like clothes and shoes, this bag has got you covered. Plus, there’s even a padded laptop sleeve that can accommodate devices up to 13″ and 15″!

And to make your travel experience even better, the bottom compartment is specifically designed to keep your shoes, toiletries, and other essentials separate. Trust me, this is the bag for anyone who wants to stay organized while traveling.

Another great feature worth mentioning is the zipper pocket located on the back, which doubles as a trolley sleeve ! This makes it easy to attach the bag to the handle of your luggage for effortless travel. Also, you can carry it in two ways : either over one shoulder using the handle straps or tote-style- the choice is yours!

What we don’t love

The Beis Weekender bag can get too big and heavy when packed to full capacity and I have found that it can be too large to be a personal item that can fit under the seat in front of you when flying on an airplane.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Monos Metro Duffel

If you want to keep it simple and classy, this is the duffel. Although it has a 23L capacity, which is smaller than other carry-on bags on this list, its streamlined design allows you to take it with you anywhere, from the office to the gym, or from a co-working space to a weekend getaway – the possibilities are endless.

The bag is equipped with two interior side pockets to keep your umbrella and water bottle in place, as well as an exterior pocket. Of course, as another best carry on for laptop, it also features a 15″ padded laptop compartment , which is why it made the list of the best carry ons with laptop compartments.

And the bag is compatible with the QuickSnap Modular Kit System, allowing you to effortlessly attach and detach the Classic Kit pouch containing all your necessary items.

Moreover, this duffel bag comes with a pass-through sleeve that allows it to be easily secured to your main luggage. The pass-through sleeve even doubles as an additional pocket when not in use. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t appreciate extra pockets?

This bag is offered in two versions : one made of water-repellent nylon twill with vegan leather accents, and another made entirely of vegan leather. The vegan leather model is crafted from ethically sourced ultra-microfiber material, making it one of the best eco-friendly carry-on bags with a laptop sleeve available.

The bag’s compact size makes it suitable only for short trips, as it may not be sufficient for anything longer than three days.

Also, some users have expressed their dissatisfaction with the bag’s narrow top opening, which limits the amount of space available for packing. They suggest that if the zipper extended further down the sides, similar to the full wraparound zip opening of the Away Everywhere Bag , the bag’s space could be better utilized.

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Dagne Dover Landon Carryall Bag

With so many built-in organizational features inside it, there’s no way you’ll be unorganized with the Landon Carryall!

The 18-liter bag comes equipped with a 13-inch laptop sleeve , an adjustable key leash, a water bottle pocket , and a removable air-mesh shoe bag for when extra storage is needed beyond clothing.

This design feature guarantees effortless access to your items, sparing you the hassle of sorting through a chaotic heap each time you open your bag – as they say, convenience is key!

You can carry the best travel bag with laptop compartment in whichever way is most comfortable for you, either by hand using the sturdy grab handle, or on your shoulder using the detachable shoulder strap.

Dagne Dover is a company that designs stylish bags using eco-friendly materials, and the Landon Carryall is no different.

It’s crafted from the brand’s signature water-resistant Neoprene material, featuring a recycled reprieve lining made from recycled plastic bottles. By choosing the Landon Carryall, you can do your part in preserving the environment while still looking stylish for years to come!

Many people have complained about the Dagne Dover Landon Carryall staining easily. If you’re concerned about having to deal with stained or scuffed fabric frequently, I recommend opting for a darker shade of the bag.

Other than that, the bag seems to be of good quality and has a lot of compartments for organization.

How to choose the best carry-on luggage with laptop compartment

If you’re anything like me when shopping for a luggage, you want to pay attention to the quality, features, and what reviews say about a bag.

That’s why in this section, I will discuss the important factors that can help you shape your decision-making when you want to buy a carry on bag with laptop compartment.

Choose the right type of luggage (suitcase, backpack or weekender)

travel luggage computer

When it comes to selecting the best carry on laptop bag, it’s crucial to choose the type of luggage that meets your travel needs.

And that’s precisely why I’ve narrowed it down to the three most popular carry-ons: suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags (including rolling underseaters and totes). So, which one’s the perfect match for you?

Suitcases are the way to go if you prefer to travel light with just one bag.

They’re roomy, well-organized, and can fit all your essentials without breaking your back. Plus, you don’t have to worry about checked baggage fees or schlepping heavy bags around the airport. If you plan to walk around a lot with your luggage, a suitcase with sturdy wheels will make your life a lot easier.

If you’re a traveler who values mobility and versatility, backpacks are the perfect option for you.

But if you’re more of a free spirit who likes to explore your destination on foot, a backpack might be more your style.  They’re lightweight, versatile, and leave your hands free for other tasks. You can easily navigate through crowds, stairs, and uneven terrain, making them a great option for city breaks or outdoor adventures.

And with a laptop compartment, you can keep your device safe and secure while on the move, which makes it an excellent choice for business travelers or digital nomads.

For those who want to balance functionality and fashion, weekender bags are the way to go.

They’re perfect for short trips, business travel, or weekend getaways. These bags are lightweight, easy to carry, and can fit all your travel essentials, including your laptop. Plus, they come in a variety of styles, so you can choose one that matches your taste.

Remember, fellow travelers, the key to a stress-free and enjoyable journey lies in choosing the right type of luggage that matches your travel style. So, whether you choose a suitcase, backpack, or weekender bag, make sure it’s the right fit for you!

Laptop size & protection

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Nomatic Carry-On Pro

When looking for the best carry on bag with a laptop compartment, you must consider the size and protection of your device. It’s no use having a laptop sleeve that is either too small or too big for your tech. Your laptop must have a snug fit in the compartment to avoid dents and scratches.

It’s easier to find luggage that fits smaller laptops, but if you have a larger device like a 17-inch laptop, you need to pay attention to the dimensions of the main compartment.

Check the actual measurements of the laptop compartment to make sure that it will fit your laptop model. For instance, a bag that fits a 15-inch MacBook Pro may not necessarily fit a 15.6-inch Dell laptop.

Next, let’s discuss laptop protection . Your laptop is not only a valuable investment, but it also holds important files and documents. Therefore, it’s essential to consider buying carry-on luggage with a secured and well-padded laptop compartment to protect your device from accidental bumps and drops.

Look for bags with thick foam padding on both sides of the laptop pocket and extra cushioning at the bottom to safeguard your device from abrasions, bumps, and drops during travel. Some bags even have separate compartments with extra padding for better protection.

Lastly, make sure to check for additional features like water-resistant fabric , lockable or anti-theft zippers , RFID-blocking pockets , shock-absorbing technology, and more to provide extra protection and security for your laptop and other belonging

What carry-on luggage size should you get?

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Tortuga Travel Backpack 30L

Obviously, the purpose of using a carry-on bag is to have it with you in the cabin, so it’s essential to choose a bag that meets the airline’s size requirements. Each airline has its restrictions, but generally, the maximum size for a carry-on bag is around 22 x 14 x 9 inches .

If your bag exceeds this size, you may be forced to check it in, which can be a hassle and may result in additional fees.

Alternatively, your bag could also be a personal item if it’s small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. However, size restrictions for personal items are less specific and may vary more between airlines.

This is because each airline has different aircraft models in its fleet, resulting in different amounts of space under the seats. Generally, personal items must be under 16 x 12 x 6 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm) and fit under the airplane seat in front of you. By adhering to these guidelines, you can avoid any inconvenience and ensure a stress-free travel experience.

Material & durability

Best Carry-On Luggage with Laptop Compartment: Away Aluminum luggage

When it comes to luggage, materials are a key factor in determining its durability and performance. To ensure that you are getting the best quality, it’s important to focus on carry-on luggage made from premium materials.

For hardside suitcases, polycarbonate is the preferred material due to its combination of sturdiness and lightweight design. This material has been proven to be more durable, waterproof, and resistant to cracks and dents than other materials like ABS, polypropylene, or ABS/PC mix. With a PC suitcase, you can have peace of mind knowing that it will take a significant amount of effort to damage the shell.

For softshell bags, nylon is typically preferred over polyester due to its superior water resistance and resistance to tears and abrasions. Of course, the last thing you want is to arrive at your destination with a water-damaged laptop.

So, unless you have a hardside suitcase made entirely of waterproof polycarbonate, make sure that your carry-on has a weatherproof or waterproof coating that can keep your tech safe and dry.

Even then, it’s recommended to take extra precautions such as using a plastic bag or waterproof cover if you know you’ll be traveling in heavy rain.

Can I take a laptop bag as carry-on luggage?

Yes, passengers are allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item with them on their flight. Personal items can include a laptop bag, handbag, or briefcase that can comfortably fit under the seat in the cabin. So you can bring a laptop bag along with your main carry-on bag as part of your hand luggage. But if your laptop bag is too big to fit under the seat as a personal item, it could be considered carry-on luggage that goes in the overhead compartment.  That said, keep in mind that airline regulations regarding carry-on luggage may differ, so it’s always a wise decision to double-check with your airline before your trip.

What size laptop bag can I bring on a plane?

The size limit for a laptop bag that can be brought onto a plane varies depending on the airline and its specific policies. However, in general, most airlines allow a personal item such as a laptop bag to have dimensions of up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm) and fit easily under the cabin seat in front of you or the overhead locker. It’s always a good idea to check with your specific airline before traveling to ensure that your laptop bag meets their size requirements.

Can I have a backpack and a laptop bag on a flight?

Yes, you can have a backpack and a laptop bag as carry-on items when traveling on an airplane. Since most airlines allow passengers to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, your big backpack can be a carry-on, while the laptop bag would be a personal item.

Does a laptop bag count as a carry-on or personal item?

A laptop bag can be counted as either a carry-on or a personal item, depending on the airline’s policy. In most cases, a laptop bag can be brought on board in addition to a carry-on bag as a personal item, as long as it fits under the seat in front of you.  It’s always a good idea to check with your specific airline before traveling to make sure you understand their policies and avoid any issues at the airport.

Does a backpack count as a carry-on?

A backpack can count as a carry-on item if it meets the airline’s specific requirements for size and weight and if it can fit in the overhead compartment. It’s important to check the airline’s policies before you travel to ensure that your backpack meets its requirements and to avoid any issues or additional fees at the airport.

A thoroughly written article. My problem is quite a bit of information overload. I find myself going back and forth through the article trying to compare the different types of luggage.

Might I suggest maybe a few smaller articles on comparing say carry-ons, one for larger luggage, and trying to trim the comparisons to just 3-4 bags? Your readers will thank you for it. With that being said, you packed a lot of info in the article.

Great article! As a frequent traveller who always wants to stay connected, having a carry-on luggage with a laptop compartment is essential. Your list has given me some great options to consider, and I appreciate the detailed breakdown of each bag’s features. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing this article on the best carry on luggage with a laptop compartment.

My cousin runs her own clothing and fashion business, and she travels a lot to meet customers and suppliers to look at materials etc.

She is always complaining about her luggage and that she can’t carry on with her laptop because of the amount of clothes and other accessories she has to take.

I am going to share your article with her and I am going to be the best cousin, she is going to love this 🙂

I will let you know what she thinks of your article, site and what carry on luggage she chooses.

Thank you and keep up the great work.

All the best,

Fantastic roundup, Wole Femi Asaolu! Your comprehensive guide on the best carry-on luggage with laptop compartments is a treasure trove of information. I appreciate the depth you’ve gone into for each option, discussing not just the features but also the pros and cons. It’s interesting to see how some bags excel in laptop protection but may compromise on overall space, a trade-off that many of us have to consider.

Your point on the durability vs. price is also well-taken. It’s a tough choice between investing in a high-end bag that will last for years or going for a budget-friendly option that might need replacing sooner.

Lastly, the versatility of some of these bags is a huge plus for me. I love the idea of having a carry-on that can adapt to different travel needs, be it a business trip or a weekend getaway.

Thank you for putting together such a detailed guide. It’s given me a lot to think about before making my next purchase!

ROAM Carry-On Front Pocket in red.

Price: $625 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 14.25 x 9.75 inches | Weight: 8.3 pounds Packing capacity: 4-7 days; 37 liters | Color options: Custom color combinations include red, black, lilac and slate Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited lifetime with a 100-day trial

This fully customizable suitcase allows travelers to create a one-of-a-kind carry-on bag. From the front and back of the bag to the handles, zippers and wheels, you choose the color combination you love.

However, it's not all about the aesthetics: This hard-shell suitcase has 360-degree ball bearing wheels that roll easily over multiple surfaces, including brick sidewalks and moving walkways. The telescoping handle is sturdy and adjustable, which makes the bag glide with you, and the front-access pocket has a key fob and room for a laptop, phone, glasses and small travel essentials. There's also a built-in TSA lock. The back of the suitcase has an inset with a monogrammable leather tag to keep your personal information discreet while traveling.

Note: This carry-on is currently on closeout with limited color availability.

What our editors say:

I was extremely impressed from the moment I opened the box. It was nicely packaged in a blue ROAM-branded dust bag and the carry-on is beautifully constructed. It's made of high-quality materials, and I found the compression panels with mesh zippered compartments to be extremely useful for both maximizing space and keeping items in place while traveling. But what really sets this bag apart is how easy it is to maneuver when fully packed for a weeklong trip. It glides effortlessly over all types of terrain, even inlaid brick sidewalks! The customized color scheme (which is really easy to do) takes this carry-on to a new level. Plus, you can create a coordinating tote or backpack to match. – Rachael Hood, Senior Editor

Best Overall Runner-up: Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream on a pathway outside.

Leilani Osmundson | U.S. News

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner in cream.

Price: $369.99 or less

Dimensions: 23 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 8.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 10 days; 45 liters | Color options: White, red, blue, green or gray Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited lifetime

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Hardside Spinner is a truly well-rounded carry-on with a plethora of unique features. USB A & C ports on the outside of the bag give easy access to charging. (A power bank is not included, though the bag does have a pocket for one inside the expansion zipper.) Self-aligning magnetic wheels – a reviewer-favorite feature – allow painless travel through the airport as well as on roads, sidewalks, uneven surfaces and more. A built-in TSA zipper lock offers ultimate protection for your possessions.

Even without the features listed above, this Travelpro spinner is, at its core, a high-quality piece. The hard outer shell is ultra-strong and 100% polycarbonate; aluminum corner guards further protect your belongings. The clamshell-style suitcase has two large interior compartments along with three extra pockets, one of which is water-resistant, and the expansion zipper allows for an extra 2 inches of packing room. Plus, this carry-on is made with genuine leather trim, so you can travel in style as well as comfort.

There are some amazing features on this carry-on, but my favorite is the wheels – as someone who typically prefers hands-free travel (primarily backpacks), I found that the way this suitcase easily glides around everywhere absolutely changed my mind about wheeled luggage. Just know that since this is one of the larger bags on this list, I would still check your airline's carry-on size requirements before traveling (though it's been tested for most major domestic airlines, and it fit perfectly on Delta). – Leilani Osmundson, Digital Producer

The Away The Carry-On in green.

Amanda Norcross | U.S. News

The Away The Carry-On in green.

Price: $275 or less

Dimensions: 21.7 x 14.4 x 9 inches | Weight: 7.5 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 5 days; 39.8 liters | Color options: Black, navy, blue gray or olive, plus 2 glossy options Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Limited

When it comes to hard-sided carry-on luggage , nothing beats The Carry-On by Away. The bag is lightweight yet indestructible thanks to a 100% polycarbonate exterior. Plus, you can easily wipe away most scratches with a magic eraser.

In late 2023, Away launched a new iteration of The Carry-On that somehow made it even more efficient. The most notable new features are an additional underside grab handle, three extra interior compartments, and an enhanced compression system that upholds the bag's ability to accommodate nearly a week's worth of clothing. The bag's 360-degree wheels are also slimmer than those of its predecessor for improved maneuverability. While Away has long been known for its neutral colored matte options, glossy options of this bag are now available.

The Away Carry-On is my ride or die. I've taken it on so many trips over the past five-plus years and it's still in perfect shape. I know I'll have it with me for many years to come. – Amanda Norcross, Content and SEO Strategist

Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue in an alley.

Catriona Kendall | U.S. News

The Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner in blue.

Price: $199.99 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 7.1 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Black, gray, green, aqua blue or royal blue Hard- or soft-sided: Soft-sided | Warranty: 10-year limited

This classic soft-sided option from Samsonite offers everything you need for a smooth trip. There are three spacious pockets and a trolley strap on the outside so you can stack it on top of another rolling suitcase, as well as a USB port for charging your phone (though you'll have to purchase a battery separately).

Inside the suitcase, three more zippered pockets – including one for wet items – help you stay organized, while buckles keep the main compartment's tie-down straps out of your way while packing. This spinner can conveniently expand by 0.75 inches, but keep in mind if you're flying that overpacking may put it over your carry-on size allowance.

I've used other spinner suitcases in the past, but none of them glide as smoothly as this bag, with its 360-degree dual-spinner wheels. I also love the high-quality, lightweight material, but my favorite part is its organizational features – especially the WetPak pocket. I'd highly recommend the Samsonite SoLyte DLX for anyone who needs a trusty soft-sided carry-on for a flight; it definitely fits more than I thought it would. – Catriona Kendall, Associate Editor

July Carry On Light in black against a sunny window.

Price: $245 or less

Dimensions: 21.25 x 14.17 x 7.5 inches | Weight: 3.9 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 7 days; 32 liters | Color options: Beige, light green, dark green, lilac, charcoal or 3 others Hard- or soft-sided: Hard | Warranty: Lifetime with 100-day returns

Weighing just under 4 pounds, this bag is the lightest hard-sided carry-on we found on the market. It's constructed with an extremely durable German polycarbonate shell, and the interior has two mesh zippered compartments to keep your belongings from shifting. The inner nylon lining is also resistant to water and stains. To make the suitcase easy to maneuver, there's a top carry handle, a telescoping handle and dual-spinner wheels.

I was absolutely shocked by how light this suitcase is. While some lightweight designs can be extremely flimsy, this July carry-on is very durable and holds a good amount of clothing. With compression packing cubes I was able to pack enough clothing for a week. It was extremely easy to put in the plane's overhead compartment, and the wheels rolled very smoothly for my entire journey. The only thing I noticed is that since the bag is so lightweight, the trolley bag I had was making it want to topple. Next time, I'd use a smaller tote or a north-south design to avoid that issue. – Rachael Hood

The DELSEY PARIS Helium Aero International Carry-On - Expandable Spinner in blue.

Erin Evans | U.S. News

The DELSEY PARIS Helium Aero International Carry-On - Expandable Spinner in blue.

This DELSEY PARIS carry-on is a well-built piece of hard-sided luggage. It meets carry-on suitcase size restrictions for most international airlines and offers an easily accessible front compartment – ideal for a laptop up to 15.6 inches or other items you want to be able to grab quickly. The suitcase has a TSA lock and two spacious internal compartments for clothing, shoes and travel gear. The double-spinner wheels glide smoothly across all types of surfaces, and the handle pulls out and retracts with ease.

I was incredibly impressed by this little workhorse of a carry-on bag. There are so many different pockets and compartments within it for organization, and it fits a surprising amount of clothes, shoes and accessories. The handle and wheels make it easy to maneuver, and the glossy exterior makes it look sleek and chic. – Erin Evans, Managing Editor

The Amazon Basics 20-inch Hardside Spinner is similar to many other hard-sided luggage products on the market, but it's available at a fraction of the price. Other convenient features include interior mesh compartments for organization, an exterior pocket for airport essentials (or even your laptop) and a signature PowerPocket where you can charge your smartphone.

While the bag is undoubtedly an investment at $700, its "simple as that" guarantee (free repairs forever, no questions asked) – plus sturdy features like impact-resistant corner guards and self-repairing zippers – means you'll have it for life.

When it comes to quality, this is the best luggage I've ever used – period. The compression/expansion system is just the icing on the cake. – Amanda Norcross

On the inside, there's a padded laptop sleeve, multiple interior pockets and compression straps. For added convenience, the main panel can be secured via built-in snaps to get your laptop out while traveling (and keep your other belongings from spilling out), or you can unsnap it while packing to maximize the interior storage space.

When I'm traveling on a quick trip with my laptop, this is my go-to bag. Its compact size glides easily under the seat, and it's also compact and light enough to fit into the overhead bin even on the smallest regional planes. I love the laptop sleeve and the zippered exterior pocket for my book, earbuds and wipes. To maximize the interior space, I use compression cubes from Lug , and I'm able to squeeze in four to five outfits, a pair of shoes and daily necessities. – Rachael Hood

The Amazon Basics Expandable Softside Carry-On Spinner – 20.4 Inch in black.

Price: $83 or less

Dimensions: 20.4 x 14.9 x 8.2 inches | Weight: 6.35 pounds Packing capacity: 2-3 days; 26 liters | Color options: Black, olive, gray, red, blue or purple Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: 1-year

This simple but sturdy carry-on piece from Amazon is a great option for business travelers, thanks to its front pocket for easy laptop access, smooth double-spinner wheels and TSA lock. On some airplanes, it may even be small enough to fit under the seat.

The interior of the bag features one large compartment with two compression straps, plus two zippered pockets on the opposite site. The 20.4-inch option is ideal for shorter trips, but this style is available in larger sizes as well. Another bonus: It's available on Amazon Prime, so it ships quickly.

This Amazon Basics option is on the smaller side for a carry-on, but that's what makes it a solid choice for business travelers going on short trips who only need to pack a few things. The laptop pocket is easily accessible, and the handle on the bottom of the bag is super useful for hauling it out of an overhead bin. The black color is professional, and the price can't be beat. – Erin Evans

Carl Friedrik The Carry-on Pro in black against chair.

Price: $565 or less

Dimensions: 21.7 x 15 x 9.6 inches | Weight: 9.5 pounds Packing capacity: 5-7 days; 43 liters | Color options: Gray/cognac, gray/chocolate, gray/black or black Hard- or soft-sided: Hard-sided | Warranty: Lifetime with a 100-day trial

Constructed with premium materials, this luxury carry-on has Italian leather accents, Japanese spinner wheels and a polycarbonate exterior with an aluminum metal frame for stability. It closes via two secure latches with combination locks (rather than a zipper). There's a front laptop compartment with a smaller pocket and pen slots to keep business essentials or travel documents easy to access.

The interior has leather details, compression straps and a removable compression pad with a pocket – ideal for small items like ties, fashion jewelry or silk scarves. Travelers can also purchase an additional compression pad to have a pad on each side of the interior compartment.

This suitcase exudes luxury with its Italian leather trim and understated elegance. The design of it looks very sleek, the interior is spacious, the handle is very sturdy and the wheels glide with ease. I especially liked that the top of the suitcase is very flat, which gave my trolley bag a secure base so it wasn't moving around while I was at the airport, and the front compartment was ideal for accessing my laptop on the go. It feels very sturdy, but the only downside is it weighs more than a typical carry-on. – Rachael Hood

Best Carry-on Duffel: The North Face Rolling Thunder – 22"

The North Face Rolling Thunder – 22" in black on rooftop.

Price: $270 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 8.5 inches | Weight: 7.34 pounds Packing capacity: Up to 5 days; 40 liters | Color options: Black Hard- or soft-sided: Soft-sided | Warranty: Limited lifetime

The North Face's 22-inch Rolling Thunder duffel doesn't have the bells and whistles of other carry-on options, but it's a sturdy and reliable option for those who want a duffel style on wheels. The duffel has a hard-sided back panel, two wheels that can withstand various terrain and plastic bumpers for abrasion resistance. The soft-sided top of the bag is made of water-resistant Base Camp material and nylon for extra durability. There are two zippered pockets on the outside to stash small items and a mesh pocket inside for some added organization.

I brought this duffel on a trip to New Zealand, and it held up very well. The Rolling Thunder had no issues after being checked on six different flights, and the flexibility of the style allowed me to easily store it out of the way in my campervan once I had unpacked. It's definitely a simpler style, but it does its job well. Be aware, though, that this wheeled style doesn't have straps that would allow you to carry it like a duffel; it can only be rolled. – Catriona Kendall

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L in purple.

Price: $200 or less

Dimensions: 22 x 12 x 10 inches | Weight: 3.5 pounds Packing capacity: 5-10 days; 35 liters | Color options: Multiple options but color availability changes frequently Hard- or soft-sided: Soft-sided | Warranty: Lifetime

When it comes to hands-free and adventure travel, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L can't be beat. This lightweight carry-on backpack comes with a sternum strap, a removable waist belt and a weight-distributing harness system, all to make for a comfortable carry (since sore shoulders can be a concern when it comes to carrying backpacks through time-consuming airport experiences).

Organization is a breeze with a top zippered pocket – perfect for storing travel documents or a Cotopaxi hip pack – and a padded laptop sleeve on the outside. Internally, you'll find two mesh compartments, one large and one subdivided, that work great with Cotopaxi packing cubes . The backpack's straps can be tucked away for more streamlined travel, and the bag even comes with a rain cover (though the Allpa is already TPU-coated to be water-resistant).

Furthermore, Cotopaxi is dedicated to sustainability : 94% of Cotopaxi products contain repurposed, recycled or responsible materials. The vibrant, one-of-a-kind Del Dia Allpa backpacks , for example, use remnant fabric.

I've taken my Cotopaxi Allpa on countless adventures and it's survived everything – wind, rain, being shoved into tiny rental cars, you name it. Besides being incredibly durable, I love how much this backpack can fit; my longest trip so far with only the Allpa 35L as my luggage has been a comfortable nine days, and that included packing bulky cold-weather gear. I just wish it had a water bottle pocket like the Allpa 42L does! – Leilani Osmundson

Solgaard Carry-on Closet – Large: This bag packs a built-in organizer component along with a durable exterior. The Solgaard Carry-on Closet is worth considering if you like to avoid packing and unpacking.

Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner: While the Solo New York Re:Serve Carry-On Spinner is a solid (and sustainable) carry-on bag for less than $200, it doesn't offer quite enough space – especially for someone who may be traveling for longer.

Away The Aluminum Carry-On Bag: This is a well-built carry-on bag. The only downfall is that it's on the heavier side, weighing nearly 11 pounds. Away's Aluminum Carry-On is also more than twice the cost of the standard carry-on by Away, which works just as well.

Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner: This is a great soft-sided option if you're looking for a lightweight suitcase. Featuring a sleek nylon construction, a large front exterior pocket and internal zippered pockets, the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner works well but isn't as lightweight as the July Carry-on Light.

Monos Carry-on Plus: It's a high-quality suitcase with a lot of internal details, but given its larger size this bag doesn't fit in the overhead compartment on multiple planes (especially regional jets). That said, if you're traveling domestically on larger planes, the Monos Carry-on Plus could be an option to consider. Or, the smaller standard Monos Carry-on could be a good option as well.

Pros and Cons of Hard-sided Luggage

Pros and cons of soft-sided luggage, frequently asked questions.

Aside from traditional rolling suitcases, the following items can be used as carry-on luggage provided they meet carry-on size limitations (which vary by airline) and fit in the overhead bin or fully under the seat (not sticking out) in front of you.

  • Duffel and weekender bags:  This includes weekenders and duffel bags with wheels . Just note that wheels are included in carry-on dimension restrictions.
  • Garment bags:  These are also considered carry-on baggage by most airlines. You can place your garment bag in the overhead bin, or in some cases, a small closet on the plane.
  • Pet carriers:  Some airlines consider pet carriers to be carry-on luggage. Check with your chosen airline when preparing for your trip with Fido.
  • Backpacks:  If your carry-on backpack fits under the seat, it will count toward your personal item allowance on most major airlines. This means you'll have the option to bring an additional bag for the overhead bin.
  • Diaper bags: If you're traveling with a baby, diaper bags and other baby travel gear generally don't count toward either allowance – meaning you can bring these items in addition to your carry-on bag and personal item.

Purses , briefcases and camera bags can be carried on the plane as well, but usually aren't considered carry-on bags and are instead labeled personal items. Underseater bags – often designed specifically to fit comfortably under a plane seat – are also ideal as a personal item.

Typically, travelers can bring one carry-on bag (for the overhead bin) and one personal item (for under the seat) on the plane, free of charge.

Carry-on luggage sizes can vary by airline. Several major U.S. carriers, such as American Airlines and United, impose a 22 x 14 x 9-inch rule. If you're buying new carry-on luggage, this is a good default size to choose – especially if you fly with a variety of airlines.

For international airlines, it's often 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 inches. To be sure about dimensions as well as any weight restrictions, see our guide to Carry-on Luggage Size & Weight by Airline . It usually doesn't matter how heavy your carry-on bag is, though some airlines do monitor the weight.

  • Hard-sided: The hard-sided July Carry On Light weighs less than 4 pounds, making it one of the most lightweight carry-on bags on the market. Other lightweight carry-on bags we recommend include the hard-sided Away The Carry-On (7.5 pounds) and the Amazon 20-Inch Hardside Spinner (7.3 pounds).
  • Soft-sided: If you're looking for a lightweight, soft-sided carry-on bag, consider the Lipault Plume Cabin Size Spinner (4.8 pounds) and the Samsonite SoLyte DLX Carry-On Spinner (7.1 pounds).

Hard-sided luggage is often heavier than soft-sided luggage – but only by a few pounds. If you're planning to purchase a hard-sided carry-on bag, look for something that's made of polycarbonate or polypropylene, both of which are lightweight yet durable materials.

How We Tested

Our team tested 26 carry-on bags across several price points and on a variety of trips spanning overseas flights, weekend getaways, overnight trips and more. We traveled by car, plane, train and cruise and packed for a variety of climates and activities, from shore excursions in Mexico to rainy road trips around Iceland. For bags with wheels, we tested their maneuverability on multiple surfaces, including gravel, pavement, grass, moving walkways, cobblestone and carpet. After four months of testing, we deem these carry-on bags the best of the best for 2024.

The Best Laptop Tote Bags

Three of our favorite laptop tote bags that we tested, shown with a laptop, sunglasses, keys, a pen, and a notebook.

No professional wardrobe is complete without a great-looking bag to carry all of your gear. For people who have to lug around a computer, laptop bags are a more polished, grown-up option than a backpack, and they offer more storage space than a briefcase.

After years of testing, we’ve landed on six favorites: a water-repellant polyester tote with clever pockets ; a well-padded tote that can also be used as a cross-body messenger bag ; a refined leather tote with a zippered laptop compartment ; a splurge-worthy leather bag, with internal organization, that you’ll have forever ; a minimalist vegan tote that’s extra-roomy ; and a budget faux leather bag with a dedicated laptop compartment .

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, and keys.

The research

For laptops up to 13 inches, for 15-inch laptops (and larger), how we picked and tested, the competition, a durable, water-repellent polyester tote: bellroy tokyo tote second edition.

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, and keys.

Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition

A sturdy and smart commuter.

This tough yet polished laptop tote bag is thoughtfully designed, with features like internal popout bottle pockets and leakproof zippers. But its durable fabric shell is abrasive and may make some sweaters and blouses pill.

Buying Options

(select colors)

Who should get this: Anyone who prefers something more casual than a briefcase but still wants to look pulled together.

Maximum laptop size: 13 inches

Why it’s great: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition is a good-looking, well-made piece that transitions perfectly from the coffee shop to the conference room. It strikes a happy medium for professionals who appreciate a polished look and want some protection for their devices but don’t want to flout a semi-casual dress code.

The Bellroy tote we tested is made of a fine-weave polyester (created from recycled water bottles) that’s durable and water-resistant. This bag is ideal for people who need something that will survive scuffs, drops, stains, and routine overpacking. Commuters caught in the rain will also be comforted to know that the laptop tote’s shell repelled water well when we held it under a running faucet. And the exterior zip pocket offers an airtight seal to keep water from destroying valuables.

View of the inside of the Bellroy Tokyo Tote, containing a laptop in one of the pockets, a scarf, and several books.

When we tested a previous generation of the Tokyo Tote, our panelists’ favorite features were, of all things, the interior pop-out, magnetic pockets (for holding a water bottle upright inside the bag). The Second Edition has the same pockets they loved. When the pockets aren’t in use, you can just push them inward, and they spring back into the tote’s frame. These internal pockets are located on both sides of the bag, and they’re also big enough to fit a pair of flip-flops or dirty gym clothes you want to keep separate from the rest of your stuff.

The Bellroy Tokyo Tote Second Edition also has a large exterior zip pocket, plus two interior pockets (one with a key clip) that are large enough to hold a Field Notes book , a smartphone, sunglasses , or a wrapped USB cord. And the padded laptop section provides ample protection and snugly holds laptops with screens up to 13 inches. The carry handles have a 12-inch drop, so they’re longer and more comfortable to use than the handles on any other bag we recommend. Those handles are padded for added comfort, and they’re coated with no-skid rubber, to prevent the bag from sliding off your shoulder while you’re commuting.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Bellroy Tokyo Tote ’s durable shell is similar to that of the now-discontinued sibling tote we previously tested. This shell can be abrasive against delicate work clothing, and in previous testing, the tote’s exterior pilled knitted sweaters and snagged blouses made of polyester blends. The new handles have softer edges that didn’t snag our shirts as much during testing. The straps also feature no-slip patches, which further reduce pilling at the shoulders (but not near the bust, where most pilling occurs during carry).

This laptop tote’s weave also attracts pet hair like a magnet. If you’ve got a furry friend at home, we don’t recommend the black version, which spotlights pet hair of every shade.

A tote and messenger bag in one: Lo & Sons The O.G. 2

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium)

Utility player.

This nylon tote doubles as a messenger bag, works well for frequent flyers, and offers lots of organization and padded laptop protection. But its added functionality makes it the heaviest of our picks.

Who should get this: Commuters who like the look of a tote bag but prefer the functionality of a cross-body messenger.

Why it’s great: We love the nylon Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 (medium) for its versatility. It has a conveniently long crossbody strap and a variety of storage compartments, and it offers ample laptop protection. It’s the just-right blend of a tote and a messenger bag.

This bag grabbed our attention with touches like gleamy accent hardware, contrasting interior lining, plentiful pockets, and studded feet. The O.G. 2 features a three-color design consisting of a neutral exterior, which you can spice up with several fun interior colors. It also comes in medium and large sizes.

This laptop tote boasts a ton of organization: four large zip compartments, four slip pockets, two pen pockets, a laptop or document holder, a hidden shoe compartment, and a long key leash. Thanks to the bag’s concealed zipper design, half of its storage features are in an external compartment that’s hidden out of sight. We like to think that means subway thieves will overlook you when they’re hunting for an easy mark.

The O.G. 2 provides more laptop protection than any other tote we recommend. The laptop compartment, the exterior, and even the individual pockets are padded to shield electronics from cracks and dings.

View of the inside of the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, containing headphones, a scarf, a book, and a notebook.

This bag does a good job of keeping liquids at bay. It has tight seams, so spilled drinks won’t penetrate the base, unlike with its sibling, the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, in the Competition section .

The O.G. 2 model is the only laptop tote bag designed for travel that we recommend. Both the medium and large sizes should fit under most airplane seats. And the backside features a zippered trolley sleeve, so travelers can secure the bag over luggage handles.

And this tote is also one of two bags we recommend with a crossbody strap—our EaseGave Laptop Bag pick is the other. Each has a wide, thick strap, like a seatbelt, but we prefer The O.G. 2’s design, which consists of thicker hardware and a longer strap. The thicker slide adjuster ensures that the strap won’t suddenly become slack on your trek to work. Also, the longer strap—up to 7 inches longer than that of the competition—lets you adjust it to accommodate a wider variety of body sizes and heights. And we like that this bag allows you to carry it with the shorter handles, which are easier to grab and go.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The slimish profile of the The O.G. 2 isn’t ideal for commuters who carry a ton of gear. The bag is cushiony, and the sides taper at the top, so the space is narrow. That also makes it harder to rummage in the bag and find what you need while you’re on the move.

At 2.6 pounds, this bag in medium is one of the heaviest we tested. Only the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (Classic), the Lo & Sons Seville Tote, and the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag (all in the Competition section) were heavier, weighing from 2.7 to 3 pounds each. (Note: The large-size Lo & Sons O.G. 2 bag weighs slightly more, at 3 pounds.)

Some 14- and 15-inch laptops can fit inside the bag’s main compartment but don’t fit inside the padded laptop compartment.

Dimensions: 13.75 by 16.6 by 6.75 inches (medium); 14.25 by 16.5 by 6.75 inches (large) Handle drop: 9.5 inches (medium); 10 inches (large) Weight: 2.6 pounds (medium); 3 pounds (large) Warranty: one-year warranty Colors: black/gold/gray, black/gold/lavender, black/gold/camel, black/silver/lavender, black/silver/gray, black/gunmetal/gray, deep navy/gold/camel, gray/silver/azure

A sophisticated leather tote: Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote

The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pale leather with an orange tag.

Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag

A refined open-top tote.

If you’re ready to invest in a high-quality bag, this pebbled leather tote offers style and sophistication. Though there is a dedicated laptop compartment that zippers closed, the rest of the bag stays open at the top.

Who should get this: People with a higher budget who want an upscale leather tote with a refined silhouette.

Why it’s great: The Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag is spendy, but for the price it delivers sophisticated styling, supple pebbled leather, and structured design. The stitching on ours was perfect and didn’t fray, the leather felt luxuriously smooth, and the upright design never slouched or tipped.

Since we first made the Perry a pick, it has been slightly redesigned; we have not tested the new model, but the minor changes appear to have made the updated bag even more functional than its predecessor. It is now an inch bigger and includes three small internal slip pockets.

The Perry has a dedicated laptop slot in its center, dividing the bag into two parts. We like that the division offers some organizational structure, which is hard to find in a high-end leather tote.

The laptop compartment zips shut and is large enough to hold a 13-inch model and maybe a thin document or two. The Perry’s compartment is also raised off the bottom of the bag, so if you mistakenly plop your bag on the ground, you won’t dent your laptop in the process.

The Perry is a dream to carry. The original version weighed 1.8 pounds, half as much as many other contenders we dismissed ; the new version is nearly the same weight, according to the manufacturer specs. But what really surprised us was that the Perry, despite its somewhat thin straps, was still comfortable enough to carry, packed with gear, for a full day of commuting.

A laptop tucked into the zippered inner pocket of the Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote Bag.

Some of the priciest laptop tote bags we tried—including the over-$500 Lo & Sons Seville Tote , in the Competition section—aren’t leakproof. So we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the Tory Burch Perry tote is. In our tests, the burnished seams were reliably strong, neither buckling under a heavy load nor allowing spilled beverages in.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Like most open-top bags we tested, the Perry doesn’t offer much protection from the elements. Only the laptop compartment has a zipper, so the bag doesn’t shield the rest of your stuff very well.

Also, the laptop compartment isn’t padded. But because it’s elevated off the bottom of the bag and isn’t exposed on either side, we’re not overly worried about a computer or tablet getting banged up while inside.

Dimensions: 14 by 5 by 11.6 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1.8 pounds (previous version; current version is the same, according to manufacturer’s specs) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: black, clam shell, ivory, light umber, mint green, brick, feather gray, bay gray, natural

A classic leather tote to last a lifetime: Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

The Carl Friedrik Ashby, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in black with a pen, sunglasses, a notebook, and keys.

Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote

An elegant forever bag.

Handmade in Italy, this leather tote looks and feels extra special, has plenty of room for your belongings, and zips securely across the top. It’s the priciest of our picks, but it is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Who should get this: Those in search of a timeless leather bag that’s only going to get better with age—and those willing to pay a premium for it.

Why it’s great: The Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote is a bag that commands attention. This gorgeous leather tote is handmade in Italy, and though it’s the most expensive option we tested, it’s well worth the price. For about $650, you get a bag with unquestionable quality, beautiful lines, and a lifetime warranty.

Carl Friedrik is a brand known for elegance, and it delivers with the Ashby tote. With its clean lines and pristine details, this tote radiates classic good taste. The longer you own the Ashby, the better it will look: It’s made of vegetable-tanned, full-grain Vachetta leather, which will develop a patina over time and get even richer with use. The surface is finished, which gives it a slight sheen and protects against water stains and scuffs.

Heavy-duty zippers with polished teeth glide smoothly, and the stitching is near-perfect and incredibly sturdy. The Ashby reliably stays upright with no slouch—we pushed the bag from side to side, and it rocked but never fell over.

The Ashby is large but manageable, and it will work for many occasions. The straps fit comfortably over the shoulder. There’s a spacious main compartment that will easily hold commuting essentials, including a 13-inch laptop in a dedicated pocket. Note that this bag will easily accommodate a 15-inch laptop in the main compartment. There is also a large zip pocket and three slip pockets for storing smaller gear, like a wallet, pens, and charging cords.

View of the empty inside of the Carl Friedrik Ashby Leather Tote, one of our favorite laptop totes.

Lastly, over the course of our testing, this is one of only four companies we’ve found offering a true lifetime warranty (the others are Duluth Trading Co. , Peak Design, and Timbuk2; Herschel, Targus , and others offer limited lifetime warranties that protect only against manufacturer defects not caused by long-term wear and tear). For a bag that costs as much as a car payment, we’ll take all the protection we can get.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: This is an expensive bag, though its cost is tempered by its excellent quality and lifetime warranty, which covers both wear and tear and manufacturer defects.

The Ashby’s straps are among the thinnest we’ve seen—on a par with those on our Tory Burch Perry Triple-Compartment Tote pick. We found the Ashby’s straps comfortable to use, even when the bag was full. But this is something to be aware of if you haul extra-heavy loads.

This bag’s base lacks studded feet (found on both our EaseGave Laptop Bag and Lo & Sons The O.G. 2 picks), which protect the base from wear and tear.

Dimensions: 18 by 11.5 by 5 inches Handle drop: 9 inches Weight: 2.5 pounds Warranty: lifetime warranty Colors: cognac, black

A sleek, minimalist vegan tote: Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag

The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in pink with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

Matt & Nat Abbi Vegan Tote Bag

An understated vegan leather bag.

Longer-than-average straps make this simple tote—roomy enough for larger laptops—easy to carry. But it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop compartment, so electronics could float around unprotected.

Who should get this: Those who care less about bells and whistles and just want a sleek bag that’s big enough to fit a laptop plus their daily gear.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches

Why it’s great: The Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag is a spacious, no-frills work tote with a practical zippered top closure and long carry handles. It’s made of soft, vegan leather (produced from recycled windshield glass resin) that’s thick enough to keep your bag’s contents from bulging uncomfortably.

The body of the bag is softly structured, and the base is wide and thick, ensuring that the bag remains upright when full and doesn’t spill. The zipper’s metallic accent color and long, tapered pull tab add to the tote’s sleek, understated look. The lining is made of 100% recycled plastic nylon, so it’s especially easy to spot-clean.

The Abbi tote’s interior has one open pocket that’s big enough to hold a smartphone or a slim wallet, plus one wallet-sized pocket with a zipper that echoes the exterior’s metallic finishes. But there is no dedicated laptop compartment.

We especially appreciate the Abbi’s long handles, which make tucking the bag under the arm easier (especially for those who have a larger chest). The handles have a 10-inch strap drop, 2 inches longer than those of many totes we researched, including some bags listed in our Competition section, from Cuyana, Dagne Dover, and Lo & Sons . Two inches may not seem like much, but when you’re hauling your laptop, commuting gear, and a few dinner ingredients, you’ll likely be thankful for the extra length.

Finally, we’d trust the Abbi to keep our belongings safe and dry if we were forced to rest it on the floor of a subway car. There’s a feeling of dread many commuters experience whenever they lift their bag off the ground, fearing they’ll discover that it’s dripping wet and their stuff is ruined. During our tests, the Abbi’s clean, tight seams didn’t let spills seep through this bag. And the vegan leather is easy to spot-clean.

View of the inside of the Matt & Nat Abbi Tote Bag, with a laptop tucked inside.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Abbi’s minimalist design lacks a padded compartment for a laptop. For shock absorption, we recommend using a padded sleeve for your laptop in this bag.

The Abbi’s zipper doesn’t create an airtight seal—not unusual among zippered totes—so water may trickle in from above during a heavy rainstorm. When you’re traveling sans umbrella, carrying the bag under your arm should keep out most rainwater.

Vegan leathers can flake and peel after extended use (though Wirecutter’s Sasha VanHoven has had a Matt & Nat backpack made of a similar material for more than a year and hasn’t seen any peeling).

Matt & Nat’s one-year limited warranty policy doesn’t cover normal wear and tear. To extend the life of the bag, we recommend cleaning stains with warm water and dish soap, and coating it in faux-leather polish as needed.

Dimensions: 13.5 by 5.75 by 12 inches Handle drop: 10 inches Weight: 1 pound Warranty: one-year limited warranty Colors: black, daffodil, lime green, lychee, yellow

A sturdy budget tote: EaseGave Laptop Bag

The EaseGave Laptop Bag, one of our favorite laptop tote bags, shown in lavender with a pen, glasses, a notebook, and keys.

EaseGave Laptop Bag

An inexpensive faux leather bag.

This bag is well priced and extremely durable, and it has plenty of useful features—including a detachable messenger strap and metal feet. But it’s heavy and stiff, and few will mistake the exterior for real leather.

Who should get this: Commuters seeking a durable, functional tote on a budget.

Maximum laptop size: 15 inches (for the 15.6-inch bag), 17 inches (for the 17.3-inch bag)

Why it’s great: The EaseGave Laptop Bag is the cheapest bag we recommend, but it doesn’t skimp on features. Made of top-grain polyurethane leather (PU leather for short), this laptop tote bag was thicker and more durable than other faux leather bags we tested, such as the flimsy Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote (featured in the Competition section). It mirrors the structured, rolled carry handles and the mixed compartments of the Dagne Dover Signature Tote (also in the Competition section), which costs nearly four times as much. The EaseGave’s carry handles and messenger strap are both adjustable, to give you the best fit, which is especially impressive for a bag at this price.

Our panelists were impressed by the EaseGave’s functionality. “I really think this is a great affordable bag,” said Wirecutter product manager Samina Begum. “It had an outside pocket for all the things that I needed to keep close at hand, and the fake leather did not scratch no matter how roughly I treated the material.”

Testers also appreciated this bag’s metal feet, which lift the bag slightly off the ground, keeping  spills and grimy subway platforms at a distance. Studded feet aside, the EaseGave didn’t soak up liquids during our spill tests.

Close view of the handles and crossbody strap on the EaseGave Laptop Bag.

The EaseGave comes in two sizes (15.6 inches and 17.3 inches), with a dedicated, padded compartment that can fit a tablet or laptop (up to 15 and 17 inches, respectively). The compartment fastens shut with a Velcro strap, and although it isn’t the most secure option, it’s enough to prevent a laptop from sliding out.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although testers liked the EaseGave’s structured, rectangular shape, they occasionally found it cumbersome to carry on a crowded bus or subway; it’s so stiff and rigid that it doesn’t compress down when tucked under an arm.

The EaseGave’s interior is rough and feels like cheap polyester, which isn’t surprising at this price. The padding of the laptop compartment is on only one side. The other side is a wall-to-wall zippered pocket, but the material is flimsy, and our commuters worried about its long-term durability. “I was super anxious that my keys in my zip pocket would rip through the thin fabric and scratch my computer,” said one tester.

The EaseGave is pretty heavy, even when empty: The 15.6-inch model is 2.3 pounds, and the 17.3-inch model is 2.6 pounds, which is almost double the weight of most laptop totes we recommend.

Dimensions: 15.35 by 4.53 by 12.2 inches; 17.1 by 4.53 by 13.1 inches Handle drop: 6 inches Crossbody strap: 27 to 47 inches Weight: 2.3 pounds (15-inch laptop model); 2.6 pounds (17-inch laptop model) Warranty: 30-day return policy Colors: purple

To determine what makes a great laptop tote, we researched style blogs, bag forums, and online reviews, and we consulted our coworkers. We then compiled a list of dozens of well-reviewed laptop tote bags in a variety of styles, recording key information like price, size, materials, availability, and third-party reviews.

We also listed each bag’s notable features, such as zippered compartments, a dedicated laptop pocket, a crossbody strap, color options, and warranty coverage.

A laptop bag dripping with water suspended over a shallow clear container of water.

Once we had narrowed the pool and selected bags for in-person testing, we assessed each tote for its overall quality, the durability of the laptop compartments (when applicable), carrying comfort, weight, and water resistance.

We also had Wirecutter staffers commute with the semifinalists and then share their feedback.

Open-top tote bags

Our panelists liked the bucket shape of the Cuyana Classic Structured Leather Tote . It has leather ties that can be used to help keep its open top closed, but our panelists balked at having to partially tie a bag closed using thick pieces of leather, which easily came undone.

The Longchamp Large Le Pliage Tote Bag is lightweight and packs nicely into itself for storage, but our panelists preferred bags with a dedicated laptop compartment or some exterior padding.

Budget laptop bags

The Dreubea Women’s Soft Faux Leather Tote was really thin and showed wear and tear easily, so our panelists weren’t comfortable carrying a delicate laptop in it.

Our testers liked the gunmetal hardware accents on the Mosiso Laptop Tote Bag , but they found the zippers to be sticky and a pain to use.

The Overbrooke Classic Canvas Laptop Tote Bag was the roughest bag we tested. The cheap canvas scraped against our panelists’ skin and attracted dirt and debris with little effort. The bag also absorbed water during our spill tests.

Convertible laptop bags

The Targus 15″ Newport Convertible 2-in-1 Tote/Backpack has a clean design—though it reads more as a backpack than a tote—and a padded laptop compartment, but during our tests the bag leaked spilled water. Our panelists also hated its bright-orange interior.

Traditional laptop tote bags

The vegan leather on the Dagne Dover Daily Tote looked unattractive, the zipper was clunky, and the straps were too thin to be comfortable. The Dagne Dover Signature Tote (Classic) , also in vegan leather, was—at 3 pounds—the heaviest bag we tested. The carry handles were rope shaped, rather than flat like on most bags, and frequently fell off the shoulders of our testers. On top of that, our panelists thought the bag’s weight, rigid design, and thick, sharp edges made for a poor combination during commutes on a crowded subway train.

The Duluth Trading Co. Lifetime Leather Tote was heavy, thick, and uncomfortable to carry. The leather is treated with oil; it darkens when wet and takes forever to dry. And the zipper doesn’t offer a tight seal to protect delicate electronics from water damage.

The Lo & Sons Seville Tote is expensive and heavy, and the latch on the laptop compartment is hard to secure. Also, it didn’t keep out liquids during testing.

Travel laptop bags

The roomy Knomo Grosvenor Place Laptop Tote Bag had clean stitching, but it failed our liquid-blocking tests.

Although the Solo New York Jay Leather Tote has a full-grain leather body, we found the quality wasn’t as nice as that of most other leather bags we tested. The zippers were sticky, too, and the bag soaked up water during our liquid tests.

The Targus 15″ Newport East-West Tote is well made and offers ample laptop protection. But the carry straps were uncomfortable for us, and our panelists hated the bag’s traffic-cone orange interior color.
