Start close to home—discover more than 200 Orvis-sanctioned fly-fishing resources across the country, including lodges, guides and guide services, outfitters, expeditions, and kids’ camps, with additional resources in Canada and Mexico. Each meets our rigorous standards—we’ve already done the legwork for you. Shop for a vacation package, or plan your own. We’ll help you design an adventure for your entire family or a trip just for you and your angling friends. And look to Orvis to help organize a memorable trip for your corporate group. Find helpful tools—useful lists of suggested gear , and species tabs for insight into what’s biting where you’re going. Learn about Orvis’s special events in North America and as far afield as Belize, Argentina, Chile, and beyond.

Here in the United States, you’ll find a fly-fishing destination on every corner of the map, something close to you wherever you are. Maine’s Libby Sporting Camps (2007 Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year) accommodates guests in private log cabins, with family-style meals served in its historic lodge. Here anglers fish for brook trout, landlocked salmon, and other species that change with the seasons. Choose Alaska for its char, salmon, and trout. Crystal Creek Lodge in King Salmon, Alaska, has earned the distinguished Fly-Fishing Lodge of the Year award three times, most recently in 2019; it’s a trusted partnership going back to 1991. The C Lazy U Ranch touts “something for everyone,” including horseback riding, incredible trout fishing, and gourmet cuisine in its historic and luxurious Granby, Colorado, setting. And California’s Sierra Fly Fisher guide service in Bass Lake serves beginners through advanced anglers, with excursions in Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada on waters teeming with rainbows, brookies, browns, and rarer golden trout populations. Consider these mere appetizers, something to get you thinking and planning, and remember that fly fishing isn’t just for grown-ups: Introduce your kids (or grandkids) to the joy of angling while they’re young. Discover outdoor youth adventure programs for all ages.

Go farther afield. Fish Quebec’s Grand Cascapédia during your stay at Salmon Lodge. Or catch the northern lights (among other things) on Wollaston Lake in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In the Caribbean and Central America, try bonefishing in the Bahamas: Join our partners H20 Bonefishing on Grand Bahama Island for world-class saltwater fly fishing and accommodations at a popular resort. Belize’s charming El Pescador Lodge is an excellent destination for the novice and the seasoned angler alike; the Bonefish Bonanza trip was conceived for an intimate group of anglers and their guests and boasts guided fishing aboard a Mexican-style Panga skiff, as well as snorkeling in the extensive barrier reef and excursions to Mayan ruins on the mainland. Or enroll in the Belize Fly-Fishing School at El Pescador; learn top-notch angling techniques under the watchful eye of an Orvis fly-fishing instructor.

South American offerings include Chile and Argentina, where our late Board Chairman Leigh Perkins’s penchant for the Estancia Tecka was predicated on his intimate knowledge of the waters there. New Zealand’s Stonefly Lodge offers diversions for the non-anglers in your group, as do many other of our vacation packages. Asian trips remove anglers from civilization to the far reaches of Mongolia, where adventure goes beyond fishing for prehistoric salmonids to include a brush with the indigenous culture of the region’s nomadic population. And this is just a glancing blow—we’ve not even nodded to our partners in Europe, where you will find exotic, luxurious, and far-reaching fishing excursions.

Who better than Orvis to help you plan the details of your next fly-fishing adventure? We invite you inside; consider this your comprehensive fly-fishing guide to the best trips the world has to offer. And the common denominator among them is the prized Orvis endorsement. Click around, and then pack your rods: The fish are waiting.

Guided Fly Fishing Trips, Charters and Tours

Guided Fly Fishing

Guided Fly Fishing can be a great way for the beginning anglers to learn their local waters and how to fish them. But guided fly fishing trips are not just for the beginning angler. Even the most seasoned anglers can benefit greatly from taking a guide. Your guide can help you hone in your skills or learn a new technique for your any of your next fly fishing trips, no matter where or what you fish for next. Whether that is on a local pond for bass, for us a southern California fly fishing guide is closest, or across the country to a blue ribbon river that runs through the mountains. Guided Fly Fishing can help you improve your double haul to add a distance to your cast or help you learn to cast a fly rod for the first time.

Guided Fly Fishing is not only for trout in secluded backcountry stream or lakes. Oceans, Bays and estuaries are great places for a fly fishing trips because most fly anglers have never come across many of these saltwater environments. These saltwater fish can pull much harder and can be much more difficult to catch then their freshwater brothers. Fly fishing charters are a must for open ocean species, especially on shark fishing charters for Mako Shark and Tuna. Most anglers don’t have the gear or boat to handle those fly fishing trips on their own. Other times guides can be your eye on the water while out on a flat looking for bonefish.

We get a lot of anglers asking if there are any fly fishing trips near me? Why yes there are fly fishing tours all over the place. There’s a good chance that there is not only one but actually a few different guided fly fishing trips available. That pond across the street, the slough by your work or even the beach you love to visit with your family. They all have fish in them and I guarantee that there’s guided fly fishing at all of those locations. One of the most under rated species to fish is the lonely carp. If you live in a city and fish in a pond or slough you have carp in those waters. Carp are one of those species that can take weeks, months or even years to master. From noticing their subtle water push to seeing the very tip of their tail sticking out of the water. And I am not even going to get started on trying to get one of these bad boys to eat a Carp fly , yet they are one of my favorite fish to catch. So, when I get asked is there a fly fishing trip near me my answer will always be yes there is a guide close to your home.

So, is guided fly fishing for you? Yes, not only for the chance to catch fish, but it’s a chance to learn to fly fish and gain a new skill, or master a technique you have been working on for years, or even just to just learn a new body of water close by. So, if have never experienced fly fishing tours we highly suggest you get a buddy and get a guide for you next fishing adventure.

How to Choose the Right Guided Fly Fishing Trip

Deciding on which guided fly fishing trip to book can be overwhelming and confusing..

fly fishing guided trips near me

Why book a guided fly fishing trip?

A fly fishing guide cannot only get you on some fish but is a wealth of knowledge to the local area. Going on a guided fly fishing trip is a great way to get familiar with the local waters as well as learn and refine your fly fishing techniques. The fly fishing guides at RIGS, are some of the most experienced and passionate guides in Colorado. The RIGS difference is simple, “It’s not just about the fishing, it’s about the people.” We cater your guided fly fishing experience to exactly what you and your group are hoping for in a guided fly fishing trip. With access to 6 different river systems all within an hour drive, our team is committed to finding the perfect fit for you. When you book a guided fly fishing trip at RIGS, we do our best to match you and your group with one of our fly fishing guides that will fit well with your personality and goals.

At RIGS your guided trip is all-inclusive, meaning that there are no up charges for gear, transportation, river shuttles, or flies. Our professional guides provide you with flies, terminal tackle, a rod & reel, waders & boots, and a locally sourced lunch (only on full-day guided trips). We also offer pick-ups in Telluride and other hotels in the area so you don’t have to worry about driving to us. A trip with RIGS is truly an all encompassing fly fishing experience, catered for anglers of all ability levels. What to think about when booking a guided fly fishing trip?

When you are calling or emailing us to inquire about a guided fly fishing trip there are a few points you should consider.

  • First, how long do you want your guided trip to be? We offer half day, full day and overnight guided trips. Fly Fishing trips and clinics can range from 2 hours to 5 days So ask yourself and your group, “How much time do you want to be working with a guide?”.
  • Second, what is the makeup of your group, your skill set and your goals? A half day trip is great for beginner anglers, larger groups, anglers with mobility issues, and children (7 years old and up). A full day trip is great if you have the whole day, want to work on specific techniques or explore the greater region with a more adventurous spirit who is looking to jump all-in to the world of fly fishing. The full day trips include lunch while the half day trips do not. And if you were wondering, you cannot upgrade your half day trip to a full day trip while you are on the water. Multi-day trips involve camping and fishing to dive into the full outdoor experience.

Float fishing trip or Walk Wade fishing trip?

Another important aspect to think about when booking your guided fly fishing trip in Colorado is if you want to do a walk and wade fly fishing trip or a float fly fishing trip.

fly fishing guided trips near me

The walk and wade trip is your “classic” fly fishing trip. Walk-Wade means wading and walking through the river trip that may include some hiking on high country trips and walking along the river’s edge on tail-water trips. Typically you will travel in the guide’s vehicle to the river, and stop to get out to fish. You may drive to a couple of choice fishing spots in the guide vehicle or just park at one location and spend your trip working this water up or down the river. The wade trip is popular for never-ever fly fishers, larger groups, and anglers looking to hike a little bit more. Walk Wade trips offer the opportunity to explore a diversity of water types like freestone rivers, unique tail-waters and high alpine settings – all very scenic. The half day wade trips can be a budget friendly way to see what a fly fishing guide trip is like.

Float Fishing

The float fishing trip entails floating in one of our fly fishing boats down the river with one of our professional guides. The guide will be rowing the boat, slowing it down directing you where to cast your fly. And at times anchoring the boat and having you get out to wade fish, if conditions allow. Our guides operate out of either hard-bottomed drift boats by Boulder Boat Works or white-water rafts with fishing frames depending on the trip. The boats have a seat up front and in the back with the guide rowing the boat in the middle. Rafts are used for Gunnison Gorge floats as they are able to float through some of the skinnier water and rapids while we use the drift boats for floating the Lower Gunnison River Canyon. The drift boats are very comfortable as you have more room and your feet won’t even get wet. While the rafts are a little more for the adventurous with “self-bailing” floors where water will be coming in and out. The float fishing trips are a fun experience as you get a scenic float trip, fly fishing on a world class gold medal water river. Fly fishing from the boat is a little bit more challenging than wade fishing, but our fly fishing guides are exceptionally good at catering to beginner anglers as well as experts. Time of year?

fly fishing guided trips near me

Are you wanting to choose a guided trip based on when the fishing might be best? We fish and guide year-round at RIGS. If you want to learn more about our fishing seasons and when is the best time to fly fish in Colorado, check out the previous blog here. (Insert blog here: https://fishrigs.com/2021/05/27/planning-a-fly-fishing-trip-to-colorado-how-to-be-a-responsible-angler/) Important Points to Communicate Prior to Booking Your Guided Fly Fishing Trip:

When booking your guided fly fishing trip, be sure to communicate your goals and expectations to our staff. Here are some points to consider and discuss with our booking staff.

  • Are you looking for a scenic trip?
  • Do you want your main focus to be on catching fish and you don’t care what the scenery looks like?
  • Are you just interested in catching a big fish versus a lot of fish?
  • Do you just want to throw dry flies? Are you wanting to throw streamers?
  • Are you a beginner or never-ever angler looking to get into fly fishing?
  • Do you want a more educational experience on your guided trip?
  • Are you an experienced angler? Have you been out on a lot of guided fly fishing trips?

While we do our best to get to know who you are and what you are looking for, it can be helpful if you can let us know your expectations when booking your trip. It is also important to let your fly fishing guide know your expectations prior to the start of the trip. That way he/she can make sure to cater your trip to exactly what you are looking for.

Another important point to be sure to note is to let us know if there are any sort of medical conditions. Safety is our number one priority at RIGS and we want to be sure that our guides can accommodate your medical condition. Whether that means staying close to hospital services or limiting the amount of walking and wading. What guided fly fishing trip should you choose? Below you will find an in-depth guide to all the guided fly fishing trips that we offer at RIGS. As well as a curated list of some of our favorite trips based on what you’re looking for.

When choosing a guided fly fishing trip at RIGS, do keep in mind that rivers do fish better at certain times of year. Be sure to discuss with our team when you are planning to book and what rivers and trip options are available and what we might recommend.

The Best Places to Go Fly Fishing in the US

Cast a line and enjoy beautiful scenery at these 10 amazing fly fishing spots around the country.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

fly fishing guided trips near me

Few things are as graceful as a line floating through the air and resting on the water's surface — for just a moment — before returning to its airborne dance. Fly fishing is not an easy sport, but once you learn to tie a fly, master the cast, and hook your first fish, it's hard to stop. When you're out on the water, the chatter of daily life is replaced by the whirr of the reel and the rumble of the river. This is solitude at its best.

If the opportunity to get away from it all isn't enough to have you packing up your tackle box, then the beautiful landscapes a remote escape takes you to certainly is. Some of the best fly fishing in the U.S. can be found in quiet streams in open valleys and roaring rivers at the base of jagged peaks.

To help you plan a trip, we've curated a list of some of the best fly-fishing spots in the U.S.

Rock Creek, Montana

The fish-rich waters of Rock Creek flow for more than 50 miles just southeast of Missoula. It's a dreamy destination for trout lovers, with rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and bull trout found alongside Rocky Mountain whitefish. And the views aren't bad either — the river flows under endless Montana skies through the wild Lolo National Forest .

For the best fishing , make your way to upper Rock Creek and plan your excursion for late morning. You can set up camp in the national forest, or book a stay at The Ranch at Rock Creek .

Gauley River, West Virginia

There's plenty of great fly fishing in West Virginia – home to New River Gorge National Park and Bluestone National Scenic River — but not much can top the Gauley River in the Gauley River National Recreation Area . You'll find trout, walleye, and smallmouth bass, amid a remoteness and beauty that tops most fly-fishing destinations.

Book a cabin or campsite at River Expeditions , or tuck in at Carnifex Ferry Cabins , as close to the Gauley River as they are to Summersville Lake.

Bristol Bay, Alaska

You knew Alaska had to appear somewhere on this list. The northernmost state is home to larger-than-average Arctic grayling and rainbow trout, plus plenty of Pacific salmon. And even if you don't catch anything (which is unlikely), you might spot an Alaskan brown bear, caribou, or moose. It's a win-win.

Book your stay and a guided fly-fishing trip with Bear Trail Lodge , and enjoy its gourmet, all-inclusive meal program.

Blue River, Colorado

The Blue River splits away from the mighty Colorado River near the town of Kremmling and flows south, winding its way through ranchlands and the towering Gore Range. While a kayak or canoe might glide by during the day, depending on where you go, you may have a stretch of this 65-mile river all to yourself. Just make sure to bring along some sunscreen and a solid sun shirt, so you're ready to battle the intense Colorado sun.

You can set up in one of the many campgrounds surrounding Green Mountain Reservoir , or head south and book a room at the Frisco Inn on Galena in downtown Frisco.

Florida Keys, Florida

You don't have to head to the mountains to find great fly fishing. Saltwater fly fishing poses its own set of challenges with big fat rewards — sometimes in the form of a 200-pound tarpon. When it comes to saltwater fly fishing, it's hard to beat the Florida Keys , home to bonefish, tarpon, redfish, snook, and permit.

While down in the Keys, the Cheeca Lodge & Spa on Islamorada is hard to pass up. The staff can connect you with a guide or send you out on a fishing charter, while providing a luxurious beachfront base for downtime between fishing trips.

Snake River, Wyoming

The appropriately named Snake River slithers across Idaho and into Wyoming, where it glides past the resort town of Jackson Hole . Here, fly fishers have the unique opportunity to catch Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout, a subspecies indigenous to the river. When you're not busy snagging cutthroats, you can drop into Yellowstone or Grand Teton national parks, or hop on one of the area's many hiking trails.

After a long day on the water, put up your feet at The Lodge at Jackson Hole , a Western-inspired property that's minutes from Jackson's historic Town Square.

Yellow Breeches Creek, Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley is home to world-renowned limestone streams that have been revered by fly fishers for generations. Beginners can try their luck on Yellow Breeches Creek, while the nearby LeTort Spring Run and Big Spring Creek provide an added challenge (and added reward).

You can visit all three waterways from Allenberry , a fly-fishing lodge with on-property access to Yellow Breeches Creek.

Tanasee Creek, North Carolina

Off Tanasee Creek Road, east of Tuckasegee, is a stretch of North Carolina water that shelters plenty of wild brown trout. Tanasee Creek is found within the scenic Nantahala National Forest and is one of 15 fly fishing spots accessed by the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail , the only designated fly-fishing trail in the U.S.

Set up camp in the national forest or head to the nearby town of Cashiers and treat yourself to a cozy, lakeside cabin rental .

Madison River, Montana

Montana is a fly fisher's wonderland and the site of another popular river that runs through Yellowstone . The Madison River, a tributary of the Missouri River, is 183 miles of beautiful, trout-rich waters. Cast a line in the stretch that runs from the Lyons Bridge Fishing Access Site to Highway 287 in Ennis for the chance at the large population (estimated at 1,500 to 2,000 fish per mile) of rainbow trout found in this part of the river.

Then head back to Madison Valley Ranch , a few miles outside of Ennis, located on the Madison River with an on-site trout pond for when you just can’t get enough fishing.

North Umpqua River, Oregon

The rushing rapids of the North Umpqua River contain steelhead, salmon, and sea-run cutthroat trout in the Douglas-fir forests of southwestern Oregon . Fishermen are known for reeling in steelhead 20 pounds or more from this prime fly-fishing location.

Check in to the Steamboat Inn where you can stay in a cabin right on the river and dine on locally-sourced food paired with bottles from Oregon ’s famous wine country.

Why Would a Fly Fisher Try Ice Fishing?

With our deep dive on Ice Fishing this January, I’ve been asking some questions that a lot of you fly fishers, or ice fishing never-evers like me, may have as well. To answer those, I sat down with our in-house ice fishing (and euro nymphing, tying, guiding, etc.) expert, Hans Mylant. Hans is our primary ice fishing guide and has led the charge in expanding our fly fishing minds to all that ice fishing has to offer.

How much do fly fishing guides cost?

The cost of hiring a fly fishing guide can vary greatly depending on several factors such as the location, duration of the trip, whether it’s a full-day or half-day trip, and whether equipment is included or not. On average, for a full-day guided trip for one or two people, you might expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $600 in the United States. Half-day trips may range from $200 to $400. Some premium destinations or highly experienced guides may charge more. Many guides also offer group rates, so if you have a larger party, it’s worth asking about this. Remember to budget for a tip as well, which is customarily 15-20% of the trip cost.

A Great Experience with MFG

We had a great experience with MFG. Eric was so easy to communicate with and so well organized. Each member of our group had nothing but great things to say about the guides they were paired with. Couldn’t recommend MFG more. Will definitely use again.

Montana Fly Fishing Guides

Always a Pleasure

I have been fishing with Eric Adams and Zack Pleshar at Montana Fly Fishing Guides for nearly 15 years and have never experienced anything but the most professional, thoughtful and respectful guiding services! Always a pleasure!

Highlight of our Trip!

This was the highlight of our trip!!!!! My mother and I went to Livingston for a mother-daughter trip. Among other things we wanted to go fly fishing. Neither of us had any experience, but had watched my grandfather enjoy it over his lifetime. We wanted to connect with him, nature and learn the skill and art. Will, our guide, has his work cut out for him. He didn’t treat us like a bunch of “silly tourists.” He truly taught us the basics, we caught multiple fish, and we had the most fun, beautiful trip down the river. I know these guys will provide serious anglers a phenomenal trip, but I will be forever grateful that they were able to create an exceptional experience for two novices. It was worth every penny….it was priceless!

Wonderful, memorable experience...

Wonderful, memorable experience with the guides from MFG. Fly fishing package at Yellowstone Valley Lodge was the perfect trip. Guides are very knowledgeable, funny and prepared to help you make it a great day of fishing and appreciating Montana’s natural beauty. Will certainly be back to utilize their services to make the most of my next visit!

MFG is for You

I have been fishing with MFGs for over a decade and would not think about using another outfitter. They are customer driven and work hard to provide you the best fishing, experience possible. Any guide can tie a fly on your line, but if you want a guide that will work hard to get you on the fish and provide you with a memorable experience, MFGs is for you.

Novice fisher-woman

As a novice fisher-woman, I did quite a bit of research on which guide to use during our time in Montana. We needed someone patient and who could give us the best bang for our buck for a half-day adventure & Montana Fly Fishing Guides did just that. Eric, the owner, was incredibly kind and flexible working with us when the weather didn’t cooperate for our initial schedule. He connected us with our guide, Andy, and we had a fantastic time on the beautiful Yellowstone River, catching a variety of trout and white fish. If you book with this group, you will not be disappointed!

“Made the Day Easy & Enjoyable”

I would call myself a beginner who has only been fly fishing for about a year and this was an awesome experience. Jesse made the day easy and enjoyable and we were able to learn a lot of new tips from him. Eric was also awesome to work with booking the day. Definitely going to recommend these guys to anyone traveling to Montana.

“You should fish with MFG!”

MFG and Josh are a class act! I am a novice fly fisherman and my wife had never fly fished. Josh took the time to teach us the basics and was excellent at teaching. Josh worked hard at keeping us on fish and we were getting bit all day! I cannot say enough good things about our experience today. If you are in Montana you should fish with MFG.

Montana Fly Fishing Guides

“Definitely Going Again!”

We had an exceptional time on our first float trip! Eric hooked us up with Matt and he was not only knowledgeable he made sure we had a good time. We will definitely be going again.

“Patient and Informative”

We were fortunate to be able to book two days of guided fly fishing with Montana Fly Fishing Guides on fairly short notice. We didn’t catch all that many fish, but Lance worked with us on improving our technique (we’ve both been fly fishing for less than a year) and was both patient and informative. Already thinking about when we can head back to Montana and fish again!

“What a Great Trip”

Had the opportunity to fish the Yellowstone River with Will Lassiter on September 8, 2017 and what a great trip. I am just two years into fly fishing and Will [MFG Guide] help me with my fishing and put me onto plenty of fish, a lot in the boat and a lot if hits. Thanks Eric and Will.

“Don't Hesitate to Book, Well Worth It”

My group of 6 spent 3 days fishing with Eric and a few of his guides. This was my first time with a guide and it was a great experience. Zack consistently put us on fish. He watched our techniques and gave us advice throughout the day which helped us land even more fish. Don’t hesitate to book these guys. Well worth it.

“Great Experience, Plan To Go Again!”

Great experience. Jeff was a great guide. Goal accomplished – caught some fish and had a great time. Weather got pretty chilly, but Jeff was prepared with all sorts of gear. Would certainly recommend to anyone and plan to go again with MFG.

“Great Time on the Yellowstone!”

We had a great time on the Yellowstone with Eric. As a beginner he was great to me. He gave me some instruction before getting in the boat and was very helpful along the way. We had an excellent time catching fish. I would do it again! Thanks, Eric.

“Best service anywhere”

Eric Adams and his Montana Fly Fishing Guides is the best fly fishing guide service we have ever used. The Yellowstone, Boulder Creek, lots of private waters too. The guides are knowledgeable of the area and are on top of what is hatching and where to go. If you are planning on fishing in Paradise Valley these are the guides.

“Fly Fishing Fun!”

For the past 2 years we’ve spent part of our wedding anniversary fly fishing using Montana Fly Fishing Guides and each time they’ve over delivered! Our guides have been excellent instructors, knowledgeable, professional and just overall fun, good folks. We plan to book with them again!

"Fantastic day on the water!"

The great thing about Montana Fly Fishing Guides is that they can take a novice fisherman or a seasoned pro and show them the best day they can imagine. [They are] excellent instructors and I always walk away from the trip a better fisherman.

"Yellowstone / Paradise Valley Fly Fishing"

From guiding the technically challenging Armstrong to helping my 8 year old son catch his first Rainbow on the fly or floating any stretch of water in Montana. Montana Fly Guides is always my choice. We are already booking for next years trip.

“Best fly fishing experience ever!”

Eric Adams and his Montana Fly Fishing Guides offer exceptional world class fly fishing guiding. The personal attention is unparalleled. You will leave with memories and a thirst for more time on the water!

BOULDER RIVER

fly fishing guided trips near me

We describe our Boulder River fly fishing trips as half fishing half raft trip – in other words exciting fly fishing.

While your guide expertly rows the raft through class I, II & III rapids you’ll be hitting the pocket water in this fast paced fly fishing adventure. The Boulder River is a Blue Ribbon trout stream with quality rainbow and brown trout. This may be one of the best dry fly small streams in all of Montana. It has unusual purity giving it a unique clarity and beauty. Fly fishing the Boulder River depends on water levels and is typically floatable between late July and early August.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE BOULDER RIVER

Gallatin river.

fly fishing guided trips near me

The Gallatin River, near Bozeman Montana is small in size, which to many means little fish, but not so on this hidden gem.

This is a classic small Montana stream with shallow riffles leading to long runs and deep pools with undercut banks. Typically this is a hunting ground for large brown and rainbow trout using streamers and large crawfish patterns. We typically float the Gallatin River in a raft or drift boat due to the many braids and channels – it’s a long day of fishing, but it can be very rewarding for those anglers looking for that 20+ inch trout.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE GALLATIN RIVER

Madison river.

fly fishing guided trips near me

Want a famed Madison River fishing trip?

The Madison River originates in Yellowstone National Park and flows nearly 150 miles before joining the headwaters of the Missouri river. The Madison river fishing is divided into the upper stretch and lower stretch each of which seems to be completely different waters. Both the Upper Madison and Lower Madison are some of Montana’s premier wild trout rivers and it has been classified as a “Blue Ribbon” trout stream. Every foot of the river is capable of producing rainbow and brown trout eager to rise to a dry fly, grab a drifting nymph or a swinging streamer.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE MADISON RIVER

Missouri river.

Missouri River Fly Fishing

Join Us for a Missouri River Fishing Trip

A Missouri River fishing trip is a truly unbelievable home for trout below Holter Lake through the town of Craig and downstream to Cascade, Montana. It boasted the highest trout population in the state of Montana in 2012 with over 8,000 fish per mile and 20′′ fish are common. Obviously, chances of having a good day while Missouri River fishing are high. Not only are the fish numerous, but like most tailwaters the Missouri river is abundant in aquatic bug life, making for exceptional sight and dry fly fishing. We offer this trip only during the best fishing time of the year which is from April until early July and then again in late September into November.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE MISSOURI RIVER

Smith river.

fly fishing guided trips near me

Smith River fly fishing trips can be summed up in almost one word – secluded.

Our Smith River fly fishing trips take place on the upper section of the Smith River, between its origin and above the Smith River Fly Fishing Access Site, flows through gently rolling prairie, flanked by the tall peaks of the Big Belt Mountains and Little Belt Mountains. It is beautiful country, with sweeping wide open vistas and incredible views. Other than the small town of White Sulphur Springs, the area is also very remote. Agricultural fields surround the river in this section, with extensive brush along its bank. A number of pools are also found on this stretch. Generally, the Smith River flows at a slow to moderate pace in this section, depending on water levels.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE SMITH RIVER

fly fishing guided trips near me

The Paradise Valley Spring Creeks of Armstrong, DePuy and Nelson should be on every angler’s wish list.

These world famous creeks are a sight fishing wonderland – with consistent hatches of midges, baetis, Pale Morning Duns, and Sulphur’s anglers can test their skills against wary trout. Dry fly fishing, sight-nymphing and reach casts on 6X are useful tools to have in your angling arsenal, but don’t worry if you need a little more practice our guides will teach you these techniques and make you a better angler after just one day! Please make sure to plan ahead as these private locations have limited availability and in prime season reservations can book up to a year in advance.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE SPRING CREEKS

Stillwater river.

fly fishing guided trips near me

Don’t let the name fool you, our Stillwater River fishing trips take place on a wild and fast flowing river.

The beautiful Stillwater River begins in the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and flows north toward the town of Columbus, Montana where fishing access sites are good. Typically fishing this stream starts by mid July and August via rafts, but good wade fishing can also be had in the early spring with very good mayfly hatches starting around early March. This is definitely a dry fly fishing river and fishing this pocket water stream with a big hopper or stonefly pattern can be awesome.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE STILLWATER RIVER

fly fishing guided trips near me

If you’re looking for trophy lake fly fishing trips then you need to check out a couple of the private trophy waters in the Livingston area.

They offer outstanding stillwater fly fishing for rainbows, browns and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing on these trophy lakes is more intense than most anglers realize. Stalking large trout and sight casting to gulpers can give even the most experienced angler the casting jitters. These trophy lakes have prolific hatches of damselflies, Callibaetis mayflies, midges and terrestrials. These lakes are also the ideal starting point for both beginner anglers and those younger anglers looking to bend the rod for the first time.

BEST TIME TO FISH THE TROPHY LAKES

Yellowstone river.

fly fishing guided trips near me

This is a classic western river and should be on every angler’s life list

Our Yellowstone River fishing trips include guiding on over 120 miles of blue ribbon trout water starting at Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone River is our home water and one of the great fly fishing trout streams of the world. It is the longest undammed river in the lower 48 states, and there is excellent trout water from its tributaries high inside Yellowstone Park, downstream through Gardiner, the Paradise Valley, Livingston, and on to well below Big Timber – a stretch of nearly 150 river miles. We float many different stretches of the prime water between Gardiner and Big Timber, depending on the Yellowstone River fly fishing conditions and water levels.

Fly Fishing in Yellowstone National Park

Our Nation’s first National Park offers some of the most famous fly fishing waters in the country. Slough Creek, Soda Butte Creek, Lamar River, Yellowstone River and many other small streams are all within driving distance of Livingston, Montana. Our Yellowstone Park fly fishing guides have detailed knowledge of the waters in Yellowstone National Park and have spent decades learning these waters. They are pleased to show you some secrets to catching more trout in this amazing environment.

Don't see an answer to your question? No problem, we are always here to help, so please either give us a call at (877) 464-0034 or email us at [email protected].

What does the cost of a guided trip include?

At Trout's Fly Fishing, our trip costs are ALL INCLUSIVE, meaning we'll provide everything you'll need for a day on the water. The only thing not included in your trip cost is fishing licenses for anyone 16 years of age and older, and any gratuity that you may want to leave for the guide.

What is the appropriate tip amount for a fly fishing guide?

This is a fairly common question. The way I like to think of it is that being a professional fly fishing guide is a service industry, much like being a waiter/waitress. 20% is a very common tip percentage to give your guide at the end of the day. As always, if you feel the service you recieved that day exceeded expectations, more than 20% is always greatly appreciated. Remember, guides have a somewhat significant upfront expense associated with each trip. Buying groceries, beverages, fuel, flies, leader, tippet, fly rods/reels, etc. day in and day out certainly adds up. Rest assured, any tip money given at the end of the day is very much appreciated by your guide and goes a long way in helping recoup some of the day to day expenses associated with being a professional fly fishing guide. If you have further questions associated with tipping your guide, please don't hesitate to contact us at the shop to discuss further.

When will my guide contact me regarding my fly fishing trip?

You will hear from your guide no later than 5 days prior to your trip. At this point, information regarding meeting location and any last minute details can be discussed.

What is the cancellation policy?

Guided trips scheduled are held rain or shine, however our professional fly fishing guides will ultimately determine whether or not it is best to venture out into the great outdoors. In the event of dangerous weather, Trouts Guide Service alone reserves the right to cancel the trip. A customer may cancel a booked trip more than 21 days prior to the scheduled trip and receive a full refund. If a customer cancels a booked trip less than 21 days, but greater than 7 days prior to the scheduled trip, the customer shall be entitled to a return of 50% of the original deposit received, OR may apply the proceeds towards a future guided trip. If a customer cancels a trip less than 7 days, but greater than 2 days prior to the scheduled trip, no deposit shall be returned and proceeds will be applied towards a future trip. If customer cancels within 48 hours of scheduled trip, all deposits will be kept by Trouts Guide Service. Deposits shall be 100% of applicable rod fees in addition to 100% of guide trip fee.

Is transportation to the river included in my guide trip?

Transportation to and from the river is not included in the standard guide fee rate. Transportation can be added to the daily rate for an additional fee. Prior to your trip, you and your guide will establish a convenient meeting location somewhere along the way to the river. At this point, if space is available in the guides car, clients may have the option to ride the remaining miles to the river with the guide if they choose to do so. Otherwise, customers can follow the guide to the river to begin the day of fishing.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

While we realize trout are very tasty on the dinner table, and many of the rivers fished on guide trips allow anglers to keep a certain number/size of trout to eat, all Trouts Guided Fly Fishing Trips are strictly catch and release in order to help protect the resource.

What is a rod fee?

In simplest terms, a rod fee is a specified, additional fee applicable for every angler fishing that day. These fees are added to our published guide rates and are applicable for both half and full day trips. Rod fees ONLY apply to our exclusive private properties and will be paid at the time the trip is booked. No rod fee will ever be associated with a public water trip. Example: A property has a rod fee of $100 and there will be 2 anglers fishing on a full day trip- during the booking process, an extra $200 will be added to the standard, full day guide trip fee of $395, for a grand total of $595.

What is the difference between public vs private water? What are the benefits of each?

It could be argued that Colorado has more public water available for fishing than a person could ever fish in a lifetime. That being said, as fly fishing continues to grow in popularity, many of these public waters have become noticeably more crowded over the years- especially on the weekends. A benefit of fishing a private property is that during the day, you will have the entire stretch of river all to yourself, and will be fishing for significantly less pressured fish. (Which can make them much easier to catch at times.) Private water trips can also be great for larger groups that still want to fish together. Many times, larger groups are forced to spread out on public water trips in order to compensate for the crowds of other anglers present that day. Additionally, beginning anglers often find a private setting much more relaxed and enjoyable to learn in than public waters which may be crowded and or require more walking/hiking throughout the day. Finally, most of our private waters have undergone significant stream improvements which have created incredible habitat capable of growing very big trout. Public water trips also have their benefits that extend beyond simply being more afforable. All of our public water trips are held on world class waters that are full of fish. It's not uncommon for anglers to experience the best day of fly fishing they've ever had on public water. Another reason anglers choose to book public water trips is because they want to learn to fish their home waters more effectively. Just moved to town? Live nearby but just getting into fly fishing? Tired of repeatedly fishing the same river, seeing other anglers consistently hooked up, and your net sitting idle? What better way to ramp up the learning curve, and undoubtedly save hours of frustration and confusion, by hiring a professional guide to show you the correct way to fish your local waters!? After reading this, if you're still unsure what is the better option based on what you're hoping to accomplish, give us a call or stop by the shop to discuss further. We will do whatever it takes to put together your dream day on the water!

How old does my child have to be to fly fish?

Introducing your child to fly fishing should involve one key ingredient-- FUN!! We typically find it difficult for children under 10 years old to effectively handle a fly rod and perform the necessary casts to ensure success. Again, every child is different, so feel free to contact us if you'd like to discuss your young angler's needs further.

What items do I need to bring on the day of my guided fly fishing trip?

While your guide will have all of the fishing related gear to ensure success on the water. There are a few addition items we suggest you bring: 1. Hat 2. Polarized Sunglasses- if you don't have polarized sunglasses, and aquiring a pair isn't an option, PLEASE bring some form of sunglasses/eye protection 3. Light rain jacket/extra layer. Weather in the Rockies can change in an instant. There is nothing that can ruin a day quicker than being wet and cold. 4. Socks- if you are wearing sandals/flip flops to and from the river that day, please bring socks (preferably wool, calf-high) to wear under your waders. 5. Sunscreen

Anglers have been exploring distant waters for decades. From the first exploratory fly fishing trips in the jungles of the Amazon to un-mapped atolls for fly fishing for Giant Trevally in the Seychelles, the quest to fish further and further afield is deeply rooted in the souls of many anglers. For some this thirst for adventure is rarely fully quenched, because the next best fly fishing trip is the one yet to be taken.

With over 200 destinations for the best fly fishing trip, it is hard to determine which trip is the best. What might be "best" for one angler isn't for another. Each trip we create is often custom-tailored to each individual angler. This unique ability to only sell what we know--and we know a lot--means we can probably create "the best fly fishing trip" for anyone wanting to fish any of our destinations.

So, whether it is close to home or across the world sight-casting to New Zealand brown trout or seeking a double-digit bonefish on a Bahamas fly fishing trip , opportunities exist to experience Eight of the Best Guided Fly Fishing Trips on the Planet.

Sign up for the Angler's Passport to receive trip specials, current availability, recent travel news, and more from the world of fly fishing!

1. The Seychelles

Far off the eastern coast of Africa and thousands of miles northeast of Madagascar lie hundreds of Seychellois islands. Throughout these islands are dozens of atolls and saltwater flats, offering unbelievable wading and amazing fly fishing opportunities for an incredible number of different species. Giant Trevally are the draw here, but these fisheries offer so much more-- you will find bonefish in extraordinary numbers, several different types of trevally, milkfish, triggerfish, bumphead parrotfish, permit, and dozens of other reef and flats species.

The quality of fly fishing guides in the Seychelles is at, or above, the level you would expect from the best saltwater lodges throughout the world. Guides here are passionate, knowledgeable, safe, and hard-working. The array of lodging options runs from off-the-grid eco-lodges to full-scale resorts. The remoteness, exceptional quality of guides, and variety of lodges make a trip to the Seychelles one of the best guided fly fishing trips on the planet. Want to learn more? 2. Kamchatka, Russia (Currently Closed Due to Ongoing Conflict)

Anglers have been fishing Kamchatka for decades. Because of this, the knowledge of the rivers and fisheries here is substantial. But, there is simply so much water here , a fly fishing trip to Kamchatka is one of wilderness fly fishing for large rainbow trout.

With a peninsula larger than the landmass of California and only one passable and maintained road heading into this region's interior, it is safe to say fly fishing here is a true backcounty wilderness fly fishing experience . And, the native fish here grow big...and eat with aggression. If you have ever dreamed of fishing some of the most remote, untouched rivers on earth for large, aggressive, surface-feeding native rainbow trout, then this trip should be at the very top of your list.

Guides here are experienced and safe. From fixed-based camps to float fishing trips, amenities here are ideal for anglers who desire all the comforts without the fluff—the fly fishing for massive trout is what makes Kamchatka one of the best guided fly fishing trips on the planet. Want to learn more? Click here to listen to Will Blair, Kamchatka fishing enthusiast, discuss fly fishing the legendary waters of Kamchatka on the WAYPOINTS Podcast.

3. The Bahamas

Recently, destinations for fly fishing in the Bahamas have expanded their options for permit and tarpon, but, The Bahamas is known for bonefish…and the abundance of world-class, historically significant bonefish guides make a trip to The Bahamas one of the best-guided fly fishing trips in the world. Throughout the islands of The Bahamas, lies a network of pristine water and a gigantic network of unspoiled flats. Throughout these islands are some of the planet’s most talented, knowledgeable, and hard-working fishing guides working out of a diverse selection of lodges—from mom and pop guesthouses to luxury resorts to angler-centric lodges.

With over 700 islands in The Bahamas, bonefish swim in many places. And some of these bonefish are big. An angler desiring to catch a double-digit bonefish will surely find opportunities in The Bahamas. Whether it is the massive expanse of the west-side of Andros or the logistically easy flats of Grand Bahama , a Bahamas trip to fly fish for bonefish is equal parts adventure, a lesson in the history of fly fishing for bonefish, and relative ease of travel due to its proximity to the U.S.

Wild steelhead, trophy pike, and plenty more wild trout rivers and creeks to fish in a lifetime. If you were to use only one word to describe fly fishing in Canada, that word would definitely be “variety.” From the legendary steelhead waters of British Columbia to the trout-rich rivers of Alberta to the pike-filled lakes of Saskatchewan, a fly fishing trip to Canada is a must.

Serious and slightly more experienced anglers may be interested in the challenge of wild steelhead in British Columbia – home to the world’s most famous steelhead rivers and the largest trophy sea-run rainbows on the planet. One of the single most overlooked aspects of Canada's fly fishing scene is what they offer the trout angler. We know that the words "world-class" and "best" get thrown around a lot, but we're not kidding about their trout fishing - we'll leave it at that!

Canada, as a country, takes their fishing seriously as well. With well-planned and highly managed fisheries, anglers can expect quality fishing from steelhead, native cutthroat, and backcountry trophy pike. As one of the largest countries on earth, Canada has endless lakes, rivers, and coastlines to fish.

Deep in the Santa Cruz region of Bolivia, the Secure, Aguas Negras, Pluma, and Itizirama rivers twist and turn through rugged peaks and jungles. These four rivers sustain healthy populations of Golden Dorado , a fish known for its acrobatics and sheer power. Golden Dorado is the apex predator in these rivers and roams the waters with a sense of pride. While Golden Dorado is not threatened by any larger predators, they can be easily spooked and a bit of a challenge to catch, making them an ideal quarry for fly anglers.

Using the local knowledge of life-long resident guides, a dorado fly fishing trip is one of the best-guided fly fishing trips on the planet. Deep in the Bolivian jungle are destination fishing lodges catering only to anglers pursuing aggressive dorado. But, the fish are not the only draw—the jungle itself is alone worth the trip. Nowhere else in the world can you wade a mountain stream and have thousands of butterflies dot the banks.

To give a sense of the remoteness of this operation, no motorized boats are allowed on these rivers. Instead, anglers fish out of wooden canoes that resemble what the natives of the region use. Want to learn more? Click here to listen to Bolivian golden dorado fishing enthusiast, Marcelo Perez, discuss Bolivian golden dorado on the WAYPOINTS Podcast!

6. Montana and Idaho’s Specially Permitted Float Fishing Trips

Montana’s Smith River and Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon River have many great things in common—they all flow through beautiful canyons, they are home to abundant populations of wild trout, and they require a specially regulated permit for any fly fishing trip. Because of the remote nature of these rivers and their restricted permits, they are all some of the best guided fly fishing trips on the planet.

A trip on Idaho’s Middle Fork of the Salmon is the epitome of great food, fish-eating dry flies, and an exciting yet safe river. For non-anglers, this trip is a perfect blend of relaxation, scenery, wildlife, and great service. The outfitter and guides pride themselves in their knowledge of the canyon’s history and geology.

Montana’s Smith River is pristine, protected, and isolated. Smith River flows for 60 miles through a beautiful limestone canyon. At the end of each day, spacious two-person tents are pitched, the camp is set up, dinner is cooking, and drinks and appetizers are ready. And, we haven’t even talked about the fishing yet. The quality of the professional guides here matches the consistently good fishing for wild brown, rainbow, and westslope cutthroat trout. While fish numbers and action tend to be great, by the morning of the second day most folks find the fishing a close second to the beauty of the river. Want to learn more? Click here to listen to Jake Wells, Yellow Dog's U.S. West program director, discuss planning a trip out West.

This island country is the largest island in the Caribbean and it may only be ninety miles from the United States, but it is a long way from any other fly fishing trip around. Home to the Big Three—tarpon, permit, and bonefish—a fly fishing trip to Cuba is equal parts consistently good fly fishing for saltwater species, cultural experience, and spending time with some experienced and passionate saltwater flats fishing guides.

A trip to Cuba is also about visiting the country and seeing a destination that in many ways has not really changed much since the late 1950’s. The fishing can be exciting and productive, but a visit to Havana and some of the more rural areas of the island to experience the sights, the sounds, the people, the great old cars, the music, and the overall culture that Cuba has to offer is what makes these trips special.

A fly fishing trip to Cuba with Yellow Dog is 100% legal and by booking a trip to this unique country with Yellow Dog you can be assured we will work to make a Cuba fly fishing trip as seamless as it will be enjoyable.

8. Patagonia

With majestic volcanoes, expanses of backcountry rarely explored, and generations of experienced fly fishing guides, Patagonia is a land filled with amazing fly fishing trips. In fact, choosing which country —Chile or Argentina—provides an exciting component to planning a trip.

Patagonia is one of the premier freshwater fly fishing destinations in the world – a productive, one-of-a-kind region in South America that is home to dozens of lodges, experienced and professional guides, and more rivers, streams, and lakes that can possibly be fished in a lifetime. The options and choices are endless, which is why deciding on where, when, and how to fish Patagonia can at times be overwhelming . But, whether you choose a fly fishing trip to Chile or a trip to Argentina, your experience will surely be one of the best guided fly fishing trips in the world.

The Patagonia region is a vast area of land that stretches more than 260,000 square miles across the bottom third of Chile and Argentina, bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is a freshwater angler's dream come true. Want to learn more? Our Fly Fishing History

Our parent company, AVA Rafting & Zipline was established in 1998 to share our passion for the great Colorado outdoors. Then in 2016, Fly Fishing Colorado was created with the purpose of educating beginner and experienced anglers alike and sharing our experience in the sport of fly fishing. Over the past few years, we’ve expanded our trip offerings, opened a fly fishing shop in our Kremmling, CO location with waders, boots, flies and much more.

Our trips are available on the Colorado River from May through the fall, typically finishing our season in September or October. Whether you’ve never even cast a line or you’re an experienced angler looking for a little more guidance, our fly fishing trips are a great way to learn the tips and tricks from the professionals.
