The Last Voyage of the Demeter Age Rating Parents Guide

Let’s take a look at what concerned  parents  need to know about the age ratings of the movie before letting their younger children watch  The Last Voyage of the Demeter .

Language :  The Last Voyage of the Demeter does not contain strong language or stronger words; the worst younger viewers will come across are d*mn, hell, crap, wh*re, fools, idiots, b*st*rd, and phrases such as “Jesus Christ” and Oh my g-d.”

Mature Content : The film contains violence that might not be appropriate for a young audience, including fight scenes, guns, knives, shooting, gore, dead animals, dead bodies, possessions, and more. There are scenes that show humans being murdered, bitten in the neck, and having their blood sucked out. Other scenes include a child being murdered, characters burning to death, and a graphic scene that shows a character bashing their head into a door until they are bloody and broken.

Age Rating of the Movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter : Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment The Last Voyage of the Demeter   movie rating has an R rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (Motion Picture Association of America movie ratings or MPAA rating) for bloody violence, and the parental guidelines advisory recommends it for mature audiences, an older audience, adult audience, young adults, teens, older children (older kids), and young audiences aged 17 years and older. The suggestion of parental guidance or a legal guardian (adult guardian) for this restricted R category is highly suggested for younger kids (young kids) under 17 years of age in this R-rated motion pictures for adult material. The minimum age recommendation is 17 years old; it is not suitable for young children or small children.

Overall Thoughts

The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the crew of the Demeter, a merchant ship transporting a cargo of coffins from the Black Sea to Whitby, England. The crew is unaware that the coffins contain Dracula, who is traveling to London, England. As the ship sails, Dracula begins to pick off the crew one by one.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a slow-burning, atmospheric horror film that builds suspense and dread effectively. The film’s setting, a dark and stormy sea, is perfectly suited for a horror film, and it does a good job of creating a sense of isolation and claustrophobia. The cast is also good, with Hawkins giving a particularly strong and sorrowful performance as the ship’s captain.

However, the film does have its flaws, particularly in the pacing, which is a bit uneven and has the film dragging throughout. The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 59 minutes, but considering the entire story takes place on one ship’s voyage with little plot, it could have easily been edited down by 20 to 30 minutes to make up for the slower sequences. The film can be quite gory at times, which is expected in such a horror film, and Dracula himself looks cheaply done, almost cartoonish, losing the “scariness” of the character. Additionally, for a film that sets the tone for a frightening buildup, the ending is quite anticlimactic and unsatisfying.

Overall, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a horror film that may please fans of the genre, but for a movie that is adapted from such a classic story, this one misses the mark. If you are looking for a slow-burning, atmospheric horror film, then The Last Voyage of the Demeter is worth checking out, but just like the crew of the Demeter, the film seems doomed from the start.

Can your kids watch this one? We’re covering the 7 big things parents need to know about the age rating for Gran Turismo in this parents guide.

About Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is based on the unbelievable true story of a team of unlikely underdogs – a struggling working-class gamer (Archie Madekwe), a failed former racecar driver (David Harbour), and an idealistic motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom).

Together, they risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

Gran Turismo is an inspiring, thrilling, and action-packed story that proves that nothing is impossible when you’re fueled from within.

Gran Turismo Age Rating: What Ages Can Really Watch This One?

Gran Turismo is rated PG-13 for language and intense action. What does that mean for your kids? We break it down in this parents guide.

Age Rating of Gran Turismo: Parents Guide (7 Big Things)

Can your kids watch this one? What is the age rating of Gran Turismo?

This parent’s guide will help you decide if your family can handle the seven big issues with movies and shows: mature topics, gore, violence, language, sex, romance, and nudity. We’ll also give the Gran Turismo age rating and age-appropriate recommendations.

Language would likely be your biggest concern in this movie.

There are frequent uses of swears, but thankfully not too many of the “big ones” that most parents find upsetting for younger kids.

Your kids will hear:

Age Rating of Gran Turismo: Is It Safe For Teens When It Comes To Sex, Romance, and Nudity?

There is no real sex or nudity in Gran Turismo.

There is one scene where a man and woman share a kiss, but it doesn’t go past that point.

There is also a comment made by someone on the pit crew that a driver “broke your cherry” which is a sexual connotation but not used in a sexual way.

Orlando Bloom and David Harbour star in Columbia Pictures GRAN TURISMO. Photo by: Gordon Timpen. Gran Turismo age rating and parents guide.

Violence and Gore: Is Gran Turismo Too Scary For Kids Under 13?

There are some intense racing scenes that culminate in crashes.

While the crashes do not show blood or gore, they are violent in nature.

There is a scene where a driver is pulled from a fiery wreck as well.

We wouldn’t call this a violent movie at all, but there are moments that could be intense for young or sensitive kids.

David Harbour stars in Columbia Pictures GRAN TURISMO age rating.

Is Gran Turismo Ok For Kids: Mature Topics

There are topics covered related to family dynamics: parents believing and supporting a child going a different path than expected.

Teens are seen drinking (over the age of 18 in England is legal for them to do so) and they are also seen sneaking out of the house. Two brothers take a car behind their parents’ backs.

Death and grief are also covered, including the guilt felt when one causes harm to another person. There are some heavy moments.

Parents Guide: Is Gran Turismo Appropriate For Kids Under 13?

As always, you know your kids best.

This is a solidly entertaining and at times emotional based on true events race car movie. Kids who played the video game or have an interest in cars will likely love the underdog story.

As long as language isn’t a hard no for your family, we think kids as young as 10 could enjoy the movie if they can sit for the full 2 hours and 15 minutes. It’s a long one, but a great ride to the finish!

Positive Messages

The crew leader's bravery and self-sacrifice are contrasted with the cowardice and underhandedness of the traitor on the submarine. The battle between good and evil is grafted onto an understated conflict between Soviet Communism and American democracy, which is equated with moral purity and a respect for the majesty of human life. The sole female character, Raquel Welch's Clara is shown to be competent and brave, but ultimately in need of saving. Initially, the commanders feel that "a woman has no place" on such a mission.

Violence & Scariness

Assassins shoot at scientist extricated from the Soviet Union, his car crashes but he survives. Surgical lasers are fired at a blood clot inside the human body. Antibodies attack, and a mass of white blood cells engulfs and kills the bad guy. There is a tussle between the hero and the villain.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that this 1966 sci-fi adventure is set mostly inside the human body. There is an assassination attempt, a car crash, battle-like sequences, use of "laser" guns, suspenseful brushes with death, and one death. By today's standards the action and violence are pretty tame and not very graphic. Younger kids may be alarmed by encounters with dangerous "blob"-like enemies but the circumstances are so remote as to not be particularly frightening. Importantly, the opposing forces here are antibodies and microbes and the healthful functioning of bodily organs and biological processes. Funny (SPOILERS)

What's the story.

After an attempted assassination by USSR operatives, the only scientist with the technology to successfully "miniaturize" matter is left comatose. The CIA and the Pentagon use the limited technique to save him by repairing his blood clot from within. They shrink a team of doctors and navigators who travel intravenously on a cell-sized submarine to destroy the clot through surgical laser. The catch: they have but one hour to complete the mission and get out before the miniaturization process reverses. If the voyagers and their submarine enlarge, the body's immune system will respond and attack.

Is It Any Good?

A product of its era, this is a trippy film, with a colorful, psychedelic set design full of blobby globs and jellyfishy molecules. It provides a vivid opportunity for kids to get an up-close and very magnified view of biological processes and get jazzed about physiology and anatomy. While there's the suspense of a ticking clock, and danger around every arterial corner, this movie is still more of a travelogue; a tour of strange and wondrous foreign country.

The idea that this otherworldly world is right under one's skin is indeed mind-blowing, but the excitement of the concept subsides thanks to a fairly shoddy script and no character development. The action is also tame and slowly paced by today's standards, hindered by a long set-up and much discussion about the complex shrinking procedure that's meant for the die-hard sci-fi buff. There's definitely a campiness factor that parents will enjoy, particularly the first screen appearance of Raquel Welch as a science-minded surgeon's assistant in a skin-tight scuba suit.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about the human body and how it works. Parents can explain the immune system and help kids understand how it protects itself and why a body would attack a foreign substance. Parents can guide their kids as the film follows the submarine's path through the veinal system and discuss the functions of each organ and why the heart, the lungs, and the ear all pose risk for these microscopic voyagers. Families can also discuss how scientific breakthroughs can help repair bodies save people. What might scientists invent in the future to cure people?

Passengers (2016) Parent Guide

While not groundbreaking, this sci-fi romance does deliver an engaging two hours of what it could be like to be stuck on the longest road trip ever..

The passengers on board a spacecraft travelling to a distant colony, are supposed to hibernate throughout the duration of the trip. Unfortunately something goes wrong, and two of them (Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence) are awakened 90 years before their expected arrival.

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by rod gustafson.

Passengers explores a timely topic during a period when people like Elon Musk are musing about colonizing Mars . In this movie, a private enterprise is offering Earthlings the ultimate permanent getaway: A chance to colonize what appears to be a beautiful sphere where there are fewer people and a great deal more serenity. (I say “appears to be” because the entire pitch sounds like the western expansion propaganda settlers of North America were once fed.)

Getting the people to the planet, known as Homestead II (the company has already populated a previous outpost), requires The Avalon, a massive spaceship tasked with ferrying 5,000 passengers and 258 crew members. Even at half-light speed, the trip takes 120 years, and that’s not very marketable. To avoid the worst road trip imaginable, everyone is tucked inside a hibernation pod. Ideally the occupants should sleep until four months prior to their arrival, but a malfunction causes a curious event that eventually awakens two of the passengers.

Strong emotions settle in when both passengers ask the proverbial “Are we there yet?” question, only to be told by a computer they are a scant few decades into their journey. The revelation sinks in when they realize they will live out their lives before reaching their destination. At least the cruise ship-like vessel provides activity opportunities, such as video games, a movie theater, swimming pool and a bar. And it’s that last location where much of their time is spent.

Not only does liquor help numb some of the feelings of desperation, but a human-like bartender named Arthur (Michael Sheen) is a comfort, even if his android programing is limited to a collection of the best patronizing responses you’d expect from any well-seasoned mixologist. (Although he functions much like the voice on your smartphone, he makes this stranded story a little more dynamic than Cast Away where all the character had to talk to was a volleyball.)

However, the bartender isn’t the only clue that this smart ship may be lacking in its autonomous abilities. Jim and Aurora discover an increasing number of glitches when the lights begin to flicker, the cleaning robots start crashing into walls and the breakfast machine dispenses a bushel of cereal flakes. Yes, there’s trouble brewing deep inside the Avalon and this mechanical engineer will be called upon to try and keep it patched together.

Parents greatest concern on this voyage will be the favored activity between this couple who have nothing but time on their hands. Three scenes of brief sexual activity are included with careful camera angles avoiding explicit nudity. We also see male buttock nudity on a couple of occasions. And the frequent conversations with Arthur also involve some serious drinking. Aside from this, there are only a few scatological terms and profanities, a brief scene of hand-to-hand violence when a character lashes out in frustration (a threatening crowbar is also shown) and a bloody injury from a mechanical failure.

Shot on huge, immersive sets that showcase carefully considered production design, Passengers visual efforts rank with the best space movies. The camera frequently gives us a sense of the enormity of this project and seeing our tiny couple within this space adds to the sense of isolation. On the downside, the story struggles with the usual problem of keeping two people busy with little other human interaction. This is especially true for Lawrence’s character who doesn’t have engineering skills and often plays the stereotypical helpless female while she observes her handyman cohort figuring out how to fix a nuclear reactor with a few things he has lying about the ship.

While certainly not a resounding endorsement for current long-term space plans , Passengers still delivers an engaging two hours of what it could be like to be stuck on the longest road trip ever. Anyone want to play constellation bingo?

Passengers (2016) Parents' Guide

Does this movie motivate you to imagine what you would do in a similar circumstance? How important is it to have other human company? Can pets or robots be a viable substitute?

Would you take a trip to another planet (assuming you could afford it) and leave everyone and everything behind? Aurora’s plan is to return to Earth about 240 years later. What would that be like for you? What do you think will change and what would stay much the same?

Aurora refers to William Ernest Henley’s poem Invictus , when she says we make plans like we are the captains of our fate, when really we are just passengers. What do you think she means? Why does life often not turn out the way we plan? What things do we have control over? How can you learn to accept what you can’t change, while working to make the best of our situations?
