10 Best Travel Trailers For Families Of 6: (Walkthrough Tours)

A travel trailer can be a great investment for a family. Even people who don’t usually enjoy camping are sure to appreciate the freedom and comfort that can provide.

However, travel trailers come in many different shapes and sizes, and not all of them are suitable for families.

Before you begin your search, take a look at the following list. In our opinion, these are the ten best travel trailers for families on the current market. Read on to find out why.

Table of Contents

What Families Should Look For In A Travel Trailer

Large families of 5 or more should look for a trailer that measures at least 25 feet long, while smaller groups could probably get by with a 20-foot camper.

On the subject of height, check the state regulations for the areas that are of greatest interest to you. Generally speaking, travel trailers can’t be taller than 13 feet 6 inches tall , but it’s best to make sure before you hit the road.

Sleeping Capacity

For obvious reasons, you’ll want a camper that has a comfortable sleeping space for the entire family. You might even want to consider a unit that has an extra bed or bunk beds, just in case if your a large family.

Remember that the children will grow, but the camper will stay the same size. It’s best to invest in one that will be able to accommodate everyone right from the start.

When shopping for a travel trailer, pay close attention to the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This number refers to the maximum loaded weight of the travel trailer, including cargo and passengers.

You’ll want to make sure the GVWR is lower than the overall towing capacity of your vehicle. Otherwise, you won’t be able to safely transport the trailer.

Personal Appeal

Do you enjoy cooking most of your meals outdoors? Would you prefer a bathroom with a full tub, or would you be happy with a stall shower? What about the configuration of the sleeping areas or a tri fold sofa?

With so many different floor plans, only you can determine whether the layout and features of a certain trailer will suit your family’s needs.

Best Travel Trailers For Families: Product Review Guide

In this guide, we’ll provide brief reviews of each model listed, explaining why we believe they’d be a good fit for a family unit. See the table below for a list of basic specifications.

*For travel purposes, these numbers refer to the length and exterior height of the Jay Sport 12UD when the camper is in the “closed” position.

Minnie Plus 27BHSS

If you’re looking for creature comforts, the Minnie Plus 27BHSS has you covered. This unit features an outdoor kitchen, an entertainment center, and plenty of storage. A queen bed and double bunks round out the sleeping options.

Manufacturers Website

Livin’ Lite Camplite CL23RLS

Livin’ Lite’s CL23RLS model has a sleekly attractive exterior and a cozy yet roomy interior, capable of sleeping 6 people.

The dinette converts into a bed, as does the comfortable sofa. A queen bed gives the parents room to stretch out, but be forewarned that the bed area isn’t closed off from the living space.

The outdoor kitchen is well-appointed, with ample hooks for storing all your tools.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 8 224 BHW

The Jay Flight offers several different floor plans, but we think the SLX8 224BHW is the most convenient choice for families.

With a master bedroom located in the front, a central living area, and a rear bunkhouse, the layout is convenient for everyone. The shower is especially spacious, a huge plus if there are teenagers in your party.

Forest River Alpha Wolf

The Alpha Wolf features a walk-in pantry and outdoor kitchen, making it a great choice for cooking enthusiasts who like to hone their skills on vacation

. Some later models also include a rear bath with full tub—a luxurious touch that’s sure to come in handy after long days spent in the woods.

Coachmen Keystone Bullet Crossfire 1650EX

The Bullet Crossfire 1650EX is an expandable trailer, offering a queen-sized bed on one end and an optional foldout with an additional queen bed on the other.

The sofa and dinette can be converted to sleeping space for a large family, but the extension is a nice option for smaller groups who prefer to keep the living space as-is for the duration of your trip.

Heartland Trail Runner 27 ODK

The outdoor kitchen on the Trail Runner 27ODK is made all the more appealing with the addition of outdoor speakers, which allow chefs to groove to their favorite tunes while they cook.

The indoor kitchen is also conveniently laid out, with a good-sized refrigerator and freezer. There’s a queen bed in the master bedroom, as well as a fold-out sofa.

Keystone Outback Ultra Lite 210URS

The king-sized bed and tub/shower combo make this an especially appealing option. Consider the Outback Ultra Lite 210URS if you would prefer private sleeping areas for both the children and the adults.

Bear in mind that if there are more than two kids in the party, one of them will have to crash on the sofa sleeper just outside the master bedroom.

Shasta Oasis 18BH

The Oasis 18BH is a particularly stylish trailer, with a fully equipped kitchen and roomy storage spaces. Like the Keystone Outback, it features a separate bedroom with a queen-sized bed with a bunkhouse on the other end. Some layouts even offer a full bathtub.

Forest River Salem 31KQBTS

This model is equipped with two entertainment centers, one of which is located in the master suite. No need for the kids to fight with the parents over the remote on rainy days—everyone can have their own space.

Note that the Salem 31KQBTS measures over 36 feet in length, meaning that it may be too large for some campgrounds and RV parks. Parking and maneuvering could be difficult as well.

Jayco Jay Sport 12UD

Unlike the other units we’ve listed, this is a pop up camper rather than a full-sized travel trailer. However, privacy curtains and separate sleeping areas located on each end of the camper make it feel more spacious than it looks.

Families who are apprehensive about towing a full-sized camper would do well to consider the Jay Sport 12UD before investing in a larger unit.

In Conclusion

While the final choice rests with the consumer, we would strongly recommend the Keystone Outback Ultra Lite 210URS . At just 23 feet long, with a GVWR of 6,500, it’s small and light enough for easy maneuvering, but provides all the comforts of home. For families of 6 or more, it could get a bit cramped, but for anyone else, it’s a clear winner.

Best of luck, and happy camping!

Another feature that pet owners will appreciate is the Pet Palace, an under-bed sleeping area with a doggie door.

There’s ample sleeping space for 6 people, including a king-size bed and a StudioLoft bed that’s accessed by a ladder.

A Winnebago Intent 30R will cost you around $110,000.

3. Thor Vegas 25.6

best travel trailers that sleep 6

At 27′ in length, the Thor Vegas is the shortest Class A RV on our list.

This motorhome stands out from the rest because it is designed to go off-grid, making it perfect for families that want to go a little further afield than just the next RV park.

The Vegas has a sturdy, utility-focused build and is also equipped with connectivity in mind. It comes with the Winegard ConnecT 2.0 WiFi/4G/TV antenna and an Onan RV QG 4000 gas generator and is also solar-ready.

Another fantastic feature is the RapidCamp+, which allows you to control all the RV’s systems from your phone. Once you’re off-grid, you’ll be able to use the app to monitor levels, set the generator to auto-start, turn on lights, and much more.

Although the Vegas is designed to go further than its competitors, it still retains a luxury feel.

The interior design is sleek and modern and comfortably sleeps up to 6 people.

You’ll probably pay between $80,000 and $90,000 for a Thor Vegas.

4. Newmar Ventana

best travel trailers that sleep 6

If you’re looking for a sleek Class A RV that has all the comforts of home and maybe more, then the Newmar Ventana is definitely worth considering.

With 18 different available floorplans, the Ventana has an option for everyone, and 6 people will sleep in comfort. The Ventana even comes with pillow-top mattresses, so getting a restful night’s sleep won’t be an issue.

The Ventana is built on an aluminum and fiberglass frame and has 3 slide-outs, making this an RV with more than enough space for everyone to stretch out and relax.

Aside from all the high-end interior touches, like polished countertops, concealed hinges on the closets, and soft-close drawers, the Newmar Ventana uses a proprietary Comfortdrive steering cruise control system, which makes it a breeze to cruise the highways.

The Ventana doesn’t come cheap! You’ll need to pay around $280,000.

Class A RVs That Sleep up to 8 People

Larger groups or families that need extra space have plenty of options too. Here are some Class A RVs that sleep up to 8 people.

5. Thor A.C.E. 30.2

best travel trailers that sleep 6

Thor Motorcoach designed the A.C.E. 30.2 intending to create a compact, easily maneuverable Class A RV. This motorhome is fun to drive and can manage roads that some of its larger cousins cannot navigate.

The A.C.E has a family-friendly layout, featuring a sofa-bed, convertible dinette, and bunk beds that kids will love. A drop-down bunk provides even more sleeping space, meaning this RV will easily sleep 8 people.

Although some people report that the kitchen is rather small, this is offset by the increased spaciousness of the seating areas.

The Thor A.C.E. is one of the more affordable options on our list, at around $70,000.

6. Winnebago Vista 31 BE

best travel trailers that sleep 6

Here’s another Class A RV that is just perfect for families on the move.

Winnebago has been producing RVs for over 60 years, and this company really knows what it’s doing when it comes to design.

The Vista features the kind of functional, well-imagined floorplan that has made Winnebago so successful, with a full wall slide-out that adds a massive amount of extra living space.

This Class A RV will easily sleep 8 people. There’s a huge master bedroom with a queen-size bed at the rear of the vehicle, as well as bunk beds and a retractable StudioLoft bed above the cab.

Although the Vista does have a somewhat compact kitchen, the clever use of an L-shaped counter provides easy access to the fridge and stove.

The intelligent design also extends to the walk-through bathroom, allowing access to the master bedroom when the slide-out is retracted.

The Winnebago Vista costs around $115,000.

7. Tiffin Allegro 36 UA

best travel trailers that sleep 6

Measuring a whopping 38′ in length, the Tiffin Allegro is a huge motorhome that’s definitely been designed with large families in mind.

The Allegro features a full-wall slide-out that can come with a dinette and sofa bed or a massive U-shaped seating area Tiffin calls its ‘Luxury Lounge.’ This RV is perfect for dinner parties or game nights.

Once it’s time to turn in for the night, there’ll be plenty of sleeping space for up to 8 people in the Allegro.

At the rear of the Allegro, there’s a king-size bed with a large adjacent bathroom, and toward the front there are bunk beds with an additional half-bath.

best travel trailers that sleep 6

Jayco is a hugely popular company that produces some of the best-selling Class A RVs on the market.

The Alante 31R is a thoughtfully designed motorhome that sleeps 10 people comfortably. Aside from the queen-size bed at the rear, there are 2 bunk beds, 2 sofa beds, and a bunkhouse, which means that everyone will have a place to sleep in peace!

The 2 slide-outs create tons of extra space, and the center kitchen becomes the hub of this motorhome. There’s a 3 burner stove, large fridge, and bench seating, so family mealtimes will be easy to manage.

The only downside is that the bunk beds are located right next to the main entryway, making it hard for kids to sleep if there’s are still enjoying themselves outside at night.

For a lightly used Alante 31R, you can expect to pay around $80,000.

9. Fleetwood Bounder 36H

best travel trailers that sleep 6

There are all of the features that you would expect from a large Class A RV, including plenty of storage space, a large and well-appointed kitchen, and an entertainment center.

As far as sleeping arrangements go, the Bounder has enough room to sleep 10 people comfortably. There’s a large master bedroom at the rear, with a king-size bed, as well as bunk beds, a sofa bed, and a convertible dinette toward the front of the vehicle.

A major bonus is a fact that the Bounder has 2 bathrooms.

There’s a huge master bath next to the main bedroom, as well as a smaller half-bath across from the bunk beds, which means the kids won’t have far to go in the middle of the night.

Add in an optional washer/dryer combo, and the Fleetwood Bounder is the perfect getaway vehicle for large families!

A travel trailer is a costly spend, and like any other investment, this one needs to be done carefully as well. Before you purchase one, it is important to make sure it goes along your taste and requirements. Ample Space For Sleeping

The Presence of a Bathroom

A camper must have a bathroom with a fully functional toilet, sink , and shower and water tanks, because you may not always make it to an RV park .

airstream interior

Plenty of Charging Outlets

These are times where almost everyone owns an electronic device such as a phone, tablet, etc. and so power outlets in order to charge them is a necessity

A travel trailer is required to have ample charging outlets. These are also required for CD stereos, FM players for the elderly people who prefer to keep it old school.

A Big Enough Storage Space

Even though we decide only the important things, we end up bringing along a lot more, especially if kids are involved who want their toys and tablets and games and whatnot. Storage space makes it easier for you to put excess items away when not in use in order to de-clutter the space.

Luxury Camper Bed & Sleeping Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Trailer to Sleep the Entire Family Comfortably

best travel trailers that sleep 6

Part nine of the luxury travel trailers guide .

Growing up in the High Sierra mountain town of Mammoth Lakes, California, we really didn’t travel much. After all, my parents made a very deliberate life choice to raise a family in an area surrounded by nature and outdoor adventure. To be honest, I remember only one major vacation to Disney World in Florida where we stayed in hotels and visited with about 1.5-million of our closest friends during Spring Break. Instead of traveling long distances and staying at hotels, as a family we stayed rather local, exploring the great state of California, almost always outdoors.

In elementary school, my family purchased a very modest 16-foot Shasta travel trailer for $1500. It was a classic! Lacking a dedicated bedroom, the lounge and dining area were to either side of the trailer that converted into beds. On top each floor space was a bunkbed configuration where my sister and I each called home.  There was no privacy at all, but it was fun when we were little and just sleeping in it for a night or two.

That tiny Shasta was my first introduction into the world of mobile living. Since then, I’ve designed and built or rebuilt more than 400 custom mobile living spaces all with unique and innovative solutions to meet the homeowner’s needs.

In the past decade, my wife Joanna and I have lived our lives in homes that are no greater than a couple hundred square feet, and almost all of them designed to travel.  Along the way, I have experienced the successes and downsides of sleeping accommodations that led to a great night’s sleep for all sorts of families and lifestyles. In this article, it is my goal to share some of my real live experience to help you make an informed choice when searching for a luxury RV or travel trailer.

luxury camper with loft bed

  • Sleeping Capacity

Likely one of the very first things you will see when comparing RVs, travel trailers, or any other mobile living space is sleeping capacity.  Sleeping arrangements typically range from two to more than 10, with sleeping options that depend on what you’re optimizing for.

I’ve seen tiny trailers that can hold a family of eight, like the Shasta I grew up in that were masters of efficiency and small space living. On the other end of the spectrum, I have seen massive million-dollar, 45 foot diesel pushers that slept no more than two comfortably without a guest bed in sight.

The first thing to note here is that size does not correlate to sleep in capacity. Just because you have a longer, more generous trailer does not mean you can bring the whole family with you.

Several summers ago, Joanna and I traveled across country and a large diesel motorhome. At one point we met up with my sister and her daughter to join us for the last leg of the trip. It may have been our assumptions that were misguided, but we were all quite surprised when we realized there was no place for our guests to sleep and we had to buy a blowup air mattress. Well, this 40-foot motorhome was clearly designed for a couple of snowbirds – it just didn’t make sense to me – there was nowhere to bring friends, family or guests along for the ride!

If you have a family or more than two people, make sure everyone has a place to sleep. That should go without saying, because the mobile, nomadic lifestyle can be highly contagious. Inviting friends and family to join you on your travels is highly likely. I encourage you to consider planning for guests, and if so, a place where they can sleep.

Whether you’re a family of two or six, a travel trailer’s bed layout can make a world of difference to the success or failure and whether or not people will start stepping on one another’s toes, which is the first step in getting along!

Sleeping is a very intimate activity and is a sort of safe space. Everyone should be comfortable and in an environment that’s true to them. The concept of separate sleeping spaces is key. If you have a family, and people go to bed at different times is there an area to close off or is everyone out in the open? Does one person wake up earlier than everyone else? I encourage you to look at the layout of the space and consider your daily living work routine. Even if just a couple, having separate areas to sleep when your schedules aren’t always a line is a great idea. As many of us are working collectively and remotely these days, work hours don’t always match up. For example, sometimes I work late into the night and may partner prefers to get to bed earlier. A separate room for kids or adults to sleep in, night or day, with privacy and sound control will enhance the overall the experience.

I’m not advocating that everyone needs their own dedicated sleeping room, the simply isn’t possible in a 200 square-foot home. That being said, there are techniques that can section off sleeping areas and make a day-to-day living more comfortable. If your bed is in a living space, consider who will be sleeping there. Is this a guest bed or a primary bed? Remember every time you get ready for bed you will need to, well… make the bed. If this is a lounge or convertible sleeping space how long does it take to make the bed? Do you really expect to be converting a lounge, pulling out pillows and blankets from cabinets, fitting sheets every single day? The process of bed conversion is an important topic if it’s not a dedicated bed.

Whatever the case, consider the bedroom layout in the living space and how it functions on a day-to-day basis. Sleeping is so important to our health, so a little bit of thought here will go a long way for a happier and healthier life on the road.

luxury camper trailer with queen bed

My family comes from a long line of tall Hofmanns. As a result, seemingly simple things were a challenge growing up. At 6’5’’, shopping for clothes has always been an ordeal.

Backseats of cars oddly insufficient. And the difference between a queen and full bed meant my feet were hanging off the end.

When it comes to the recreational vehicle industry, not all bed sizes are created equal.  You may be surprised to learn that there’s a whole industry of RV specific bed sizes. The term RV queen or RV king is just another way to say smaller than normal.

Good intentioned designers of travel trailers were unable to realize successful floorplans using normal bed sizes, but their marketing department required the term king or queen in order to sell trailers. Their solution? Make a different bed size and call it something else.

Point being, if you have a queen bed at home, don’t carry that expectation going into RV shopping. A traditional queen bed is 60” wide x 80” long. RV queens can be 6 to 10 inches shorter than a traditional queen.  So, if you’re a taller person or simply someone who needs more space in a bed, be sure to check the dimensions. You may need to size up to be comfortable. Your queen bed at home may be in reality closer to a RV king.

  • Ventilation

Quality of sleep is more than just a dark room in a comfortable bed. The environment around us can you make or break the quality of sleep you get. I remember living on a boat for several years. There were two bedrooms, and each was very different from one another. Both had decent size beds, that were actually too small for me, but I was younger and I loved the ideal about living on a boat.

One room on the aft (back) had a very large window at the foot of the bed, actually oddly large for a boat. The other bedroom on the stern (front) had two tiny porthole windows on either side of the room. Joanna and I quickly found the two sleeping experiences to be vastly different. On hot evenings the back bedroom with the single large window was nearly unbearable. It was hot, muggy, and stale air.

On the other hand, the front bedroom, the smaller of the two, with tiny porthole windows to either end embraced the concept of cross ventilation. Although the windows were smaller than a dinner plate, the positioning of the windows allowed for cross ventilation. Now this is a very key concept. Placement of windows in a room and how far apart each window is from one another can tell you if there will be adequate natural circulation in that space when all of the windows are open.

Ideally, there are windows on each side of the bedroom allowing for air to circulate freely from one side to the other. Imagine wind flowing across your living space in one direction. Having windows on either side of your travel trailer embraces this concept and allows air to travel freely across your living space.

A sleeping area with only one window will inevitably by hot and uncomfortable. Make sure the ventilation area on these windows is as large as possible, in addition to being located on opposite sides of the room. This is the best-case scenario.

  • Dark and Quiet

Growing up in a small town of about 7,000 people, I became accustomed to the concept of peace and quiet. When all activity stops after 6 PM and any cars on the road are usually signs of trouble, so you get used to the benefits of a dark and quiet sleeping experience. I had no idea how important this was until I went off to college at age 18 only to realize the world was very, very noisy. Earplugs became a favorite accessory starting in my college dorms and throughout the years. Unfortunately, wearing earplugs could be quite dangerous if there’s an emergency, such as a fire, and you need to get up in the middle of the night.

Noise pollution is a very real thing. While our goal may be to travel to remote areas far from the hustle, bustle, and noisy traffic of urban centers, I guarantee your mobile lifestyle will bring you to an occasional rest area or campground where you’re no more than 20 feet from your neighbor.  Sometimes you’re just 5 feet apart!

When it comes to luxury sleeping in a quiet space, this has less to do with the bedroom layout, and more about the construction of the floor, walls and ceiling of the travel trailer itself.  In architecture, we called this the building envelope. Referring to the shell or set of built structure that encloses the living space. This includes walls, doors, windows and the like.  There are so many details and reasons the envelope may perform or not when it comes to sound isolation.

Creating a quiet, sound-resistant envelope is something that’s often overlooked in design. The structural factors that greatly impact sound include:  the type of insulation, how wall/ floor/ ceiling components are attached together, the materials that are used, and so much more.

That being said, the results of a quality designed and built trailer are as clear as day to the trained eye but are often hidden from those with less experience. The following is a simple tip for the buyer of a luxury RV that will help you test how quiet the unit truly is.

luxury camper trailer bedroom couple on bed

Close all the doors and windows, sit inside, stop talking, listen. Can you hear any ambient outside noise? Chances are you’re in a busy area with plenty noise outside. If not, bring someone along with you and have them shout at you outside. Imagine this is your neighbor in a RV park or campground and you were trying to get some sleep.  The best luxury RV is designed with what would be described as a very tight building envelope. Sound should not travel well from the outside to the inside, and vice a versa. If you can easily hear those folks outside or better yet, can carry on a conversation, my recommendation is to say, “No thank you,” and point your search elsewhere. What’s the point of spending good money on a luxury experience if you we’re not able to get a good night’s sleep?

Studies have shown time and time again how important sleep is to a healthy life. We may not fully understand this while we sleep, the impacts of a sleepless night will stay with you all day. A luxury sleeping experience is one where I get a great night’s sleep and wake up feeling amazing.  In your search to find the best luxury travel trailer , I highly encourage you to put this one at the top of your list. If your sleep experience isn’t excellent, what else really matters?

Here is what to consider when choosing the best travel trailer to sleep the entire family comfortably.

Best Travel Trailer For Full-Time Living

8 Best RV Travel Trailers for Full-Time RV Living Adventure in 2024

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: February 25, 2024
  • 25 minutes read

Selecting the right travel trailer for full-time living can be an overwhelming decision.

Yet, after rigorously testing over thirty models myself, focusing on comfort, durability, and practicality, I’ve come to find that not all RVs are cut out for the lifestyle.

Finding an RV that can truly be called a home is key for those looking to transition into full-time RV living .

Some crucial factors include space, amenities, and how well they can support the everyday needs of full-time dwellers, from solo adventurers to families .

Out of the many I explored, the Winnebago – Micro Minnie 2108DS stood out for its exceptional balance of comfort, functionality, and mobility, making it my top pick for the best overall travel trailer for this purpose.

It’s a prime example of how a thoughtful layout and design can make a space feel like a true home on wheels.

  • Grand Design – Imagine XLS 22RBE : Great for couples seeking comfort and luxury on the road.
  • Coachmen – Apex 284BHSS : Ideal for families, offering spacious living and sleeping areas.
  • Airstream – Flying Cloud 30FB Office : Perfect for remote workers, featuring a dedicated office space.

What to Look for in a Travel Trailer for Full-Time Living

What To Look For In A Travel Trailer For Full-Time Living

Your preferred travel and lifestyle are going to be the biggest factor that determines the features you prioritize in a travel trailer for full-time living.

When shopping for the model that suits your family best, consider the following factors.

Where You Will Stay

Are you the type of person/family that likes to stay in well-appointed RV parks with tons of resources available, or do you love to boondock off the grid for several days at a time.

If you do love to dry camp, then you’ll want to prioritize a travel trailer with large waste and fresh water storage tanks.

You might want to also move things like a generator or solar panels higher up your list of priorities as well.

Size & Floorplan

What this ultimately comes down to is just how many people will be living full-time in the travel trailer.

If it’s just you enjoying the open road with perhaps a four-legged best friend for companionship, you might lean more toward a travel trailer that’s under 20 feet long, and has one very well-decked-out master suite.

On the other end of the spectrum, a traveling family with two small children might prioritize a travel trailer over 25 feet with a master suite in the front, bunk beds in the back, and a large dinette area for mealtimes.

Power slide-outs can also buy you more precious interior living space as well.

Length of Stay

Just how long you will stay in one spot might also be a factor. If you will be moving around every week or two, then a travel trailer that hooks up easily and deploys an awning with ease might be a preference.

If you are planning to set up camp and put your feet up for months at a time at the family lake lot, then a destination travel trailer that steps out onto a prepared deck space might top your priority list.

Where You’ll Be Staying & HVAC

If you plan to live in the sunbelt 12-months out of the year, then a travel trailer with a robust rooftop air conditioner will be a priority.

If you are a tradesman who lives in his travel trailer on remote job sites during the summer but wants to live on the ice fishing all winter, then insulation and a powerful furnace will top your list.

Payload Cargo Capacity

Since you will be living in it full time, you will likely need to haul more gear and personal effects to maintain your preferred lifestyle full time.

To spare you from living a Spartan existence, you might want to prioritize travel trailers with an above-average payload or cargo capacity.

If you are going to be towing your full-time travel trailer a lot, then you want to put extra scrutiny into the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) compared to the maximum towing capacity of your intended tow vehicle.

Ideally, you want the GVWR to be 80% or less than the pickup truck’s GVWR to keep from constantly straining the tow vehicle with all the journey’s from Point A to Point B and Point C.

The gross weight becomes less of a factor if you are going to do something like park a travel trailer at the family lake lot and leave it there year-round.

Key Travel Trailer Appliances for Full-Time Living

Key Travel Trailer Appliances For Full-Time Living

People who live full-time in their travel trailers tend to place a higher priority on certain appliances compared to people who just want to camp in their travel trailers.

This makes appliance choices their own separate category to factor into your traveling lifestyle.

Washer & Dryer Prep

Most people who live in their travel trailer full time bemoan having to take time out to sit in a laundromat.

If this sounds like you, then you might want to prioritize a model that either has a washer & dryer included in the purchase or comes prepped to have one installed.

In the same vein as laundry, washing the dishes can be a real pain. Especially if you fall in love with a travel trailer that has a small sink or a single basin sink in the kitchen.

A high-efficiency dishwasher will use only a small amount of water while cleaning the dishes and sparing you a lot of elbow grease.

It also frees up precious counter space that might otherwise be lost to an unsightly dish drainer.

Large House Batteries

If you are going to be staying off the grid for even a short amount of time, you will likely need to rely heavily on your RV’s house batteries.

A larger battery bank will hold more charge, while also giving you the opportunity to parallel wire them for a longer run time between recharging.

Generator Prep

While most travel trailers don’t come with a built-in generator, there is a fair number that does .

This is a great way to power your travel trailer when you are camping off the grid, or simply staying at an RV park that doesn’t have compatible shore power available.

Optional Solar Power

Solar panels are a great way to recharge or maintain the charge on house batteries.

They can also be a great way to save money on the cost of electricity when you are at a campsite that offers shore power.

You ultimately end up paying far less per unit for solar in the long run than you pay per unit when plugged into an RV park’s resources.

Winnebago is one of the most popular RV manufacturers of all time, and the Minnie travel trailer is one of their most popular platforms.

So, it only stands to reason that they would make a model that is geared toward an individual or couple who loves full-timing like you see with the Winnebago – Micro Minnie 2108DS.

With an MSRP of around $31,000, it is one of the most affordable options on this list. This makes for easy financing.

Its overall popularity also means that dealerships are likely to have a wide range of optional upgrades for you to customize the creature comforts to your travel style.

The interior of the Winnebago – Micro Minnie 2108DS has a sofa that converts into a queen-size murphy bed with his and hers wardrobes on each side.

This gives you a couch to lounge on during the day and a bed, all in the same area to save space.

In the back, you will find a spacious full-size bathroom to meet all your full-timing needs. The shower is separated from the toilet and the rest of the bathroom to give you a true dry bath.

The towing statistics are another nice thing to appreciate about the Winnebago – Micro Minnie 2108DS.

Just keep in mind that the Minnie’s massive cargo capacity means that you can potentially stuff it with so much gear that it will tip the scales with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of up to 7,000-pounds.

So, keep your equipment and packing style in mind when you are choosing the right tow vehicle to pair this travel trailer with.

  • Payload Capacity of 1,870 lbs.
  • GVWR of 6,995 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 497 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 43.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 82.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 37.0 gallons
  • 25,000 BTU heater
  • 18 Gallon Water Heater
  • Four Season Protection Package

The MSRP of $30,000 for the Grand Design – Imagine XLS 22RBE is just one of the many impressive factors that make this travel trailer a good choice for full-time living..

With a gross vehicle weight rating of under 7,000-pounds, it is comfortably towable by a half-ton pickup truck or a full-size SUV.

The floorplan is also very appealing for a single person or a couple who wants to live in their travel trailer full-time.

One of the major things that jump off the page with the Grand Design Imagine XLS is the Four Season Protection Package.

This makes it one of the best travel trailers for full-time living for a couple or a small family that needs to handle everything the four seasons can throw at them.

It includes key features like an upgraded 25,000 BTU High-Capacity Furnace, Heated & Enclosed Underbelly with Suspended Tanks to prevent freeze-ups, as well as a heat ducted floor and residential grade ventilation system throughout. Even the roof and front cap offer superior R-40 insulation.

When you take a closer look at the interior layout you find a queen-size master suite in that well-insulated front nose cap to keep you and perhaps a spouse toasty warm on a cold winter night.

A single power slide-out section expands the available floor space in the open concept living area to give you a truly homey feel.

The exterior of the Grand Design Imagine XLS also has a lot of the touches that help transform a travel trailer into a home.

The 18-foot awning expands to give you an outdoor porch area with plenty of elbow room.

There’s also an unobstructed pass-thru storage bin to let you conveniently stow all your outdoor gear, to keep from tracking dirty inside.

There’s even an LP quick connect for your favorite gas grill and a retractable spray nozzle hose to rinse off the dog.

These exterior creature comforts go a long way toward feeling like you are “Living” instead of “Camping.”

3. Coachmen Apex 284BHSS

Coachmen Apex 284BHSS

  • MSRP around $50,000
  • Length of 32.58 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 6,022 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,578 lbs.
  • GVWR of 7,600 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 810 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 50.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 70.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 35.0 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 10 people

With its queen-size master suite in the front, bunk beds in the back, and a ton of creature comforts the Coachmen – Apex 284BHSS is one of the best travel trailers for full-time living to meet a family’s needs.

The bunk beds in the back are great for school-age children, but also big enough to accommodate a teenager’s needs and give them a place to feel is truly their own.

The MSRP of the Coachmen – Apex 284BHSS ranges around $50,000, though there are a fair number of national dealerships who are willing to offer promotional sales, or will wrap optional extra’s into the initial purchase price.

It’s when you turn your eye to the weight and storage statistics that things start to get interesting with this full-time-capable travel trailer.

With a gross vehicle weight rating of 7,600-pounds, it is comfortably within the range of what you can pull with a half-ton pickup truck or a full-size SUV.

This spares you from having to invest in a larger vehicle to tow it, which makes it appealing to traveling families who are on the go.

The large power slide-out section of the Coachmen – Apex 284BHSS gives it a lot of interior living space.

It gives you enough elbow room to let everyone feel like they have their own area.

It also makes the most out of the open concept living room and kitchen combo to feel like a real “Home.” The bathroom in the back even has a basin deep enough to bathe a young child.

If there is a minor complaint about this family-friendly travel trailer for full-time living it’s the lack of any sort of washer & dryer prep.

If you are okay with spending a few extra hours each week at a laundromat, this isn’t a big deal.

4. Airstream – Flying Cloud 30FB Office

Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Office

  • MSRP around $110,000
  • Length of 30.83 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 6,757 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 2,043 lbs.
  • GVWR of 8,800 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 903 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 52.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 41.0 gallons
  • Sleeps up to 6 people
  • 28,500 BTU Air Conditioner
  • 30,000 BTU heater
  • Tankless Water Heater

Airstream is the classic American travel trailer, and one of the most popular travel trailer brands embraced by full-timers of yesteryear as well as today.

The problem is that their “Classic” model tends to have a price tag based on brand recognition, while also feeling like they skimped a little on modern amenities to preserve that “Classic” feel.

That is where the Flying Cloud travel trailer comes perfectly into play. It has all the look and feels of a Classic Airstream travel trailer, though it carries a price tag of around $110,000 instead of $160,000.

There are 15 different floorplans available, though we chose the Airstream – Flying Cloud 30FB Office for its ability to appeal to a traveling tradesmen, or a job site supervisor who needs to stay in comfort while living on a remote job site.

When you look at it from the outside, you will see all the signature gleam and aerodynamic shapes of a classic Airstream travel trailer.

When you step on the inside, you find a modernized travel trailer with a lot of creature comforts and innovation.

This includes things like a tankless water heater for on-demand hot water, a large bathroom, and a lounge area that separates itself from the front bedroom.

In the back, there is also a small, yet functional office. It’s the perfect place for a foreman or job site supervisor to take care of the paperwork and keep important documents in one orderly place.

When it comes to the towing statistics, the GVWR of 8,800-pounds and the heavy Hitch Weight of 903-pounds means that the Airstream – Flying Cloud 30FB Office is better suited to being towed by a three-quarter or one-ton pickup truck.

This is the typical pickup truck you see a lot of “Bosses” having at construction sites, to begin with.

Though it might put this travel trailer out of your range if you already have a half-ton pickup truck that you love.

5. Palomino Solaire 320 TSBH

Palomino Solaire 320 TSBH

  • Length of 36.25 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 7,958 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 1,865 lbs.
  • GVWR of 9,825 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 1,085 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 44.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 98.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 30.0 gallons
  • 13,500 BTU Air Conditioner
  • Washer & Dryer Prep (Optional)

The Palomino – Solaire 320 TSBH is a relatively heavy 36-foot travel trailer with all the comforts of home and then some.

While it can technically sleep up to 10 people on paper, it is arguably better suited for a couple or retirees who want to have the grandkids come to stay for a weekend.

The master suite is one of the things that jumps off the page right away.

It has a true king-size bed built into one of the three slide-out sections, with floor space for two people to walk around. This is rare in a lot of front-mounted king-size master suites.

The other thing to like is the corner closet that comes with washer & dryer prep. A dealership will have affordable stackable models for you to choose from, which lets you save time and money, without having to go to a local laundromat.

Palomino also made sure to build this version of the Solaire with a large enough gray water tank to handle the washing machine water, which isn’t always the case with the competitors.

A large slide-out at midship gives expands the livable space for the open concept kitchen and living room.

It has a comfortable sofa, a cozy dinette, and a large entertainment center just like you would expect in a brick & mortar home.

The rear of the Palomino – Solaire 320 TSBH has a separate small living room area with its own entertainment center.

There’s also a sofa sleeper with a fold-out bunk. This gives teenagers or visiting family members their own living space.

The exterior of the Palomino – Solaire 320 TSBH is also well-appointed with the creature comforts of a home on the road.

The 21-foot awning gives you a huge sitting area out of the sun. There’s also a large outdoor kitchen area with a refrigerator and sink to replicate the feeling of a grill on your back deck.

6. Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS

Coachmen Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS

  • MSRP around $52,000
  • Length of 38.5 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 8,620 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 2,180 lbs.
  • GVWR of 10,800 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 1,252 lbs.
  • 35,0000 BTU furnace

The Coachmen – Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS is another travel trailer set up for full-timing that includes a washer and dryer prep.

Adding a stackable unit saves you a lot of money in laundromat costs, without taking up a lot of space in the queen-size master suite’s corner closet.

Though this isn’t the only way in which this well-appointed travel trailer feels like a “Home” instead of a “Camper.”

When you step into the bathroom you are treated to the kind to the kind of quality features you want to live with.

This includes things like a large shower with a true glass door instead of plastic, as well as a large RV toilet and a deep basin sink.

The rear of the Coachmen – Catalina Legacy Edition 343BHTS is essentially a separate living room with an entertainment center and a comfortable couch.

If your children or your grandchildren want to visit for a weekend the entire rear transforms into a comfortable guest bedroom without robbing you of any of the living space in the midship open concept kitchen and family room.

When you step outside you’ll also find a lot of like-home convenience features.

Including an outdoor camper kitchen and a rear bumper gear rack for things like mountain bikes or hanging outdoor clothes. Not to mention a large pass-thru exterior storage bay.

All this comes with an impressively comfortable MSRP of $52,000 new. Though the gross weight of nearly 11,000-pounds does mean that you will need at least a three-quarter-ton pickup truck to tow it.

If you are going to be moving around a lot you might want to lean toward a one-tone truck for your tow vehicle. If you don’t already have one, this can factor into the overall cost of ownership.

7. Forest River – Cherokee Wolf Pack Gold 27GOLD10 Toy Hauler Travel Trailer

Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pack Gold 27GOLD10

  • MSRP around $64,000
  • Length of 33.5 ft.
  • Dry Weight of 7,860 lbs.
  • Payload Capacity of 3,546 lbs.
  • GVWR of 11,406 lbs.
  • Hitch Weight of 1,206 lbs.
  • Total Fresh Water Tank Capacity of 100.0 gallons
  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 76.0 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 38.0 gallons
  • 40,0000 BTU furnace

The Forest River – Cherokee Wolf Pack Gold 27GOLD10 is a toy hauler travel trailer that is nicely geared for a couple or a small family that loves full-time living.

Yet it is also geared to let you live in comfort when you want to take your travel trailer home off the grid for a week or so of boondocking.

The MSRP of the Forest River – Cherokee Wolf Pack Gold 27GOLD10 is also very friendly for a toy hauler travel trailer.

It only costs around $64,000 totally loaded and ready to pull off the dealership’s lot.

Though the gross vehicle weight rating does push the limit of what a half-ton pickup truck can safely pull when it’s fully loaded.

If you don’t already have a three-quarter-ton truck to pull it, you will need to factor that into the overall cost of ownership.

The living and sleeping accommodations in this toy hauler travel trailer are the definition of the word “Spacious.”

You see this with the truly king-size master suite in the front with enough room on each side of the bed for his and hers nightstands, and wardrobe closets.

There’s also enough floor space to dress and walk around easily, which isn’t always the case with a lot of other master suites that basically jam a king-size bed into the bedroom.

The large power slide-out section adds to the overall floor space that flows through to the kitchen.

It houses a family-size dinette as well as a comfortable jack knife sofa that feels like a true living room, as it faces the entertainment center and pantry.

The rear cargo area garage is large enough, and the payload capacity is high enough to easily hold an ATV, golf cart, or UTV.

Though it is much more than that. When you pull your “Toys” out the rear ramp converts into an outdoor porch or deck where you can sit back and enjoy a pleasant summer evening, just like you would on your deck at home.

The Forest River – Cherokee Wolf Pack Gold 27GOLD10 is a great option for couples who like to spend the summer “Hosting” a private campground or contract operating a primitive campground for the forest service.

You can set it up as a seasonal home in the summer, with a golf cart or ATV to let you patrol the campground. Then it packs up to let you head south before the snow flies.

8. Jayco Jay Flight Bungalow 40RLTS Destination Trailer

Jayco Jay Flight Bungalow 40RLTS

  • Hitch Weight of 1,495 lbs.

  • Total Gray Water Tank Capacity of 71.5 gallons
  • Total Black Water Tank Capacity of 39.0 gallons

While destination travel trailers like the Jayco – Jay Flight Bungalow 40RLTS are truly mobile, they are geared more for families who want to park up their travel trailers for months if not years at a time.

You see this in the signature large sliding glass door that is intended to step out onto a semi-permanent deck.

It makes this a great travel trailer for full-time living at the family lake lot or your own private retirement village.

For all the comfort and luxury you get the MSRP of the Jayco – Jay Flight Bungalow 40RLTS is a very friendly $56,000.

Though this doesn’t include the cost of some of the optional extras like the washer & dryer prep in the spacious master bath.

Where you want to keep this destination travel trailer and how often you want to move it can be a factor in the overall cost of ownership.

With a gross weight of 13,000-pounds and a hitch weight of nearly 1,500-pounds, you will need a three-quarter to a one-ton pickup truck to safely tow it.

If you are planning to park it at a seasonal or long-term campsite, then this is a non-factor.

If you are going to move it around every month or two, then you will need to factor in the tow vehicle cost or the cost to hire a tow company to move it for you.

The interior of the Jayco – Jay Flight Bungalow 40RLTS is well appointed and designed to be a true home for a couple or a small family who wants a weekend retreat that is ready 24/7/365 days a year.

It has a comfortable queen-size master suite in the front with tons of storage.

A spacious master bath, and an open concept kitchen, and a living room with an entertainment center that houses a 40-inch flatscreen TV.

How Long Is Your RV_ Best RV Length For Visiting National Parks

Not sure why out of all of the awesome choices made by Grand Design and Winnebago you picked their smallest and least luxurious models. It almost seems like you skewed the choices so people would naturally gravitate towards the larger ones you offered. Not sure anyone wants to full-time in an Imagine XLS or Micro-minnie unless they have a smaller Truck and can’t pull something larger. Those two models are suited for Non full-time people in my opinion.

Why You Can Trust GearJunkie

We get that people want the best value on gear before spending their hard-earned money. Our expert team carefully selects the products we cover and vigorously researches (and tests) our top choices. Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose a Camper Trailer

The dry weight of the camper trailers listed in our guide ranges from 1,458 to 6,122 pounds. That weight typically excludes water, gas, batteries, or additional accessories like rooftop tents and racks. Pay attention to the dry weight of the camper so you can determine if the build is within the payload of your vehicle.

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum total weight the trailer can safely weigh. The GVWR includes the dry weight, also known as the curb weight, plus the weight of people, accessories, supplies, and all your outdoor gear.

The GVWR of these trailer picks ranges from 2,200 to 10,000 pounds. You’ll need the GVWR so that you can calculate how much equipment you can safely haul in the trailer on the road, as well as how many people can sleep inside.

Clearance & Tires

If you plan on driving through rugged terrain that would require 4WD, you should invest in a trailer with generous ground clearance and off-road tires , and consider an articulating hitch to prevent toppling over on uneven terrain. Sturdier tires can also provide better traction on slick roads with snow or rain.

The ground clearance of the off-road models on our list range from 1.5 to 1.9 feet on the Timberleaf Classic Teardrop Trailer , Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper , Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , and Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Overland .

When we take a close look at tires, the TigerMoth Overland is outfitted with the 225/75R16 ( Cooper Tires Discoverer AT3 LT ), offering a tread guard against rocks and gravel, extreme durability, and solid grip on wet roads or trails.

By comparison, the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15 Tires, which are great for towing stability and a high load capacity but are not ideal for rough terrain.

Sleep Space

At a minimum, our favorite compact travel trailers offer space for two people to sleep. A portion of these designs include cabins with a nonconvertible queen-size bed. Other trailer designs have options for a couch-to-bed conversion, like the TigerMoth Overland or Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 , or a structure that supports a rooftop tent.

The larger travel trailers on our list feature a range of comfortable overnight options. The designs range from daytime couches and fold-down Murphy beds to bunk beds to dinettes that transform into a bed. If you’re a taller or wider person, pay attention to the specific bed size.

For instance, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS has a full queen-size mattress, whereas some trailers will have a narrower queen-size mattress. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2306BHS also has a bunk bed that can fold up, so more space is available for storage when the bed isn’t needed.

Also, not all mattresses are created equal. The pad in the TigerMoth Overland is firm with no cushion or give. However, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 features a high-density memory foam mattress, and the Airstream Flying Cloud 23FB has a pillow-top memory foam mattress.

Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer - bed size

A handful of the tidiest travel trailers have indoor space that’s solely dedicated to a queen-size bed and cubbies. Other tight trailers have beds that convert into a daytime couch or even have a table that can be easily installed. We like that even when the couch is pulled down into a bed in the TigerMoth Overland , there’s still a space to pull our shoes on and off.

Many trailers include an awning, which becomes a gem when you consider how much more space everyone will have to lounge out of the sun and rain at camp. Larger travel trailers typically have indoor sofas and dining tables that often convert into a bed.

Pricier, larger travel trailers have indoor kitchens with a range of features. Inside, you’ll often find a microwave, refrigerator, freezer, oven, sink, two- or three-burner stove, cabinets, countertop space, and dining table.

More compact, less expensive travel trailers have outdoor kitchens, and there’s a variety of unique designs. A galley organizes the kitchen area on the back of the rig, like on the Timberleaf Classic Off-Road Teardrop Trailer .

Other designs have pull-out drawers or fold-down units with the pantry, stove, sink, or countertop like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 or the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer .

Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 - kitchen

The spacious travel trailers on our list have indoor bathrooms with a toilet and standup shower. Tinier travel trailers don’t have an indoor bathroom, but a handful have an outdoor shower head with warm water hookups like the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 and Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper .

If your camper trailer doesn’t have an indoor bathroom and you’re posted up in a remote place, be sure to research that location’s human waste and Leave No Trace requirements — whether that means digging a cathole or using a WAG bag.

Interior Storage

Interior storage space is great for organizing apparel, cosmetics, electronics, and other comforts. Inside, travel trailers often feature storage space like shelves and cubbies, but not all offer a latch system to hold items in place while driving around.

There can also be storage space beneath the mattress. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer had an aluminum interior frame, which extended onto the doors, with numerous holes to clip carabiners, hang dish towels, or slide in hangers to dry gear like our dense wetsuits .

Larger travel trailers usually have ample storage space, including cubbies beneath sofas, cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen, and even hanging closets.

Exterior Storage

Outside, tidy travel trailers can also have a toolbox, tongue box, or racks for storing gear and equipment. Large travel trailers also often have storage compartments facing outward, which sometimes include pass-through storage space.

Doors & Windows

We really appreciate it when the doors and windows are built to last in a travel trailer. One of the most unique door configurations is on the Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer . There’s a back door that swings open and a second door that opens upward like the gullwing doors on the DMC DeLorean in “Back to the Future.” Nearly the entire wall serves as a sturdy canopy.

Windows are great for allowing ample light and can help a space feel bigger, but shades are equally important for privacy and to block out the light of the full moon or campground lamp. Slide-down shades can black out the inside of the trailer, and bug screens can enable airflow regardless of bug activity. It’s also nice to have windows that can be locked when they’re cracked.

Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer - doors

Electric, Solar, Gas, and Water

You’ll need to closely consider how much energy and resources you’ll need between trips to a gas station, store, or an overnight stay with shore power.

Even if you don’t plan to charge your laptop or watch television — an option in larger travel trailers — it’s nice to have battery power. The battery can run indoor and outdoor LED lights around the kitchen and doors, as well as the roof exhaust fan — and it can charge up phones. Many travel trailers feature a prewired solar inlet to get an energy boost off solar panels, too.

Each trailer will have a specific capacity for gas and water carry. For instance, the Off Grid Trailers Expedition 2.0 water tank boasts a 31-gallon capacity. The Vorsheer XOC Extreme Overland Camper has upgrade options for a 30-gallon water tank and bonus storage that holds two extra 5-gallon jerry cans. The Taxa Outdoors TigerMoth Camper Trailer holds one 5-gallon jerry can.

In contrast, larger travel trailers have a greater water capacity, in great part to manage the bathroom. The Black Series HQ19 comes with a 50-gallon water tank for supply, a 26-gallon gray water tank for collection (for all used water except from the toilet), and a 26-gallon black water tank for all toilet waste.

Often trailers include an indoor smoke detector, fire extinguisher, and carbon monoxide detector.

How much weight can you tow?

Check your vehicle’s door jamb or owner’s manual for the payload, max towing, and tongue weight rating. Be sure not to exceed those caps with what’s hauled in the trailer and in the vehicle.

What camper trailer features allow off-road capability?

If you intend to off-road with your trailer, be sure to pick one with durable, all-terrain tires that can handle paved, gravel, dirt, and rocky surfaces. Look for a steel frame, ample clearance, axleless suspension, burly fenders, and articulating hitch.

How long do camper trailers last?

Most camper trailers will last between 10 and 15 years. However, numerous factors determine the lifespan of a camper trailer, and the most unpredictable is the human element. Outside elements that affect the lifespan of a camper trailer include the original design, build quality, usage, and storage when not traveling.

Assuming it is a quality-built trailer, is stored properly when not in service, and received regular maintenance, it’s normal to see camper trailers in use after 15 years from when it was bought brand new.

10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers For 2023

Consider the GVWR (not the UVW)

Many RV manufacturers tout the UVW (unloaded vehicle weight) of their trailers. But adding cargo like fresh water, propane tank(s), food, clothing, bicycles, and other camping equipment to the trailer can add hundreds of pounds to that UVW number.

GVWR is the weight to know when buying a trailer for a lightweight truck or passenger car tow vehicle.

Knowing the GVWR of small campers is the key to safe towing on road or while off-the-grid camping. Now, let’s dive into our list of the best lightweight travel trailers for 2023.

The 10 Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (Under 6,000 Pounds GVWR)

The Gold Standard: How Do You Choose the Best Travel Trailer Brands of 2023?

What distinguishes the elite from the average in the world of travel trailers? After analyzing feedback from RV enthusiasts and combing through industry reviews, we have identified three things to keep in mind as you shop for your ultimate travel trailer brand.

1. Road-Tested Reliability

When it comes to RVs, it’s not a question of if you’ll encounter issues, but when. With that in mind, the reliability of a travel trailer should be your most critical consideration. The most trusted travel trailer brands inspire confidence based on sterling reviews. That feedback isn’t just from RV industry cheerleaders, but from the real experts – everyday RV owners like you and me.

Don’t fall for the shiny objects shown in walk-through YouTube reviews. Instead, dig deeper and seek out firsthand experiences from actual owners. Start with RV communities such as the iRV2 Discussion Forums . This is one of many excellent ways to get unbiased ratings and insights from owners of the brands you are curious about. Start engaging in discussions about the real-world performance and reliability of the camper you’re interested in.

2. Value for Your Money

Price matters, but not always in the way you might think. While we all love a bargain, when it comes to travel trailers that a lower sticker price can often be a sign of mass production that leads to compromised quality. As with any purchase, affordability is important, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of quality. The best travel trailer brands offer the highest value for the price point with above-average durability, thoughtful design, and overall quality.

3. Customer-First Service

The best travel trailers in the world can’t make up for a poor customer service experience. When investing in a travel trailer, you’re not just buying an RV. You are entering into a relationship. The industry’s top-tier travel trailer brands on our list understand this and prioritize customer satisfaction. From the initial contact with the manufacturer to after-sales support from the dealer and any warranty work in the future, they make it a prioirty to keep customers happy.

Not all travel trailer brands or their affiliated dealers shine in this area. Explore Google reviews about your local RV dealers that carry the brand you are considering. An overwhelming amount of negative customer feedback may be a telltale sign to look elsewhere.

The Top 10 Best Travel Trailer Brands List

Choosing the best RV trailer brands isn’t easy. There are hundreds of trailer brands and thousands of models. I selected these brands and models based on hundreds of RV user reviews. The following list of camper brands is known for their commitment to quality and value. They are also known for providing excellent customer service and timely warranty repairs. Here are the manufacturers that make our cut.

Now let’s review these brands and their best models to consider buying for your next travel trailer purchase. #2. grand design rv imagine.

Grand Design RV is another one of the best travel trailer brands. They have a loyal and raving fan base that considers their travel trailers some better overall brands in the industry.

Happy Grand Design Travel Trailer owners (Image: @AKA…Neil, iRV2 Forums member)

I have seen many owner reviews of Grand Design campers who rave about the quality of these units and the outstanding customer service. For me, a list of the best travel trailer brands would not be complete without Grand Design.

The company is located in Middlebury, IN. All their towables and fifth wheels come with a 3-year limited structural warranty. Imagine XLS is one of my favorites due to its excellent styling, features, and amenities. Grand Design has only been around since 2001 and today it operates as an independent business within Winnebago Industries. This line of campers is definitely on our short list of the best travel trailer brands in 2023.

Why I Recommend the Grand Design Imagine

The Imagine travel trailer line is my preferred bumper-pull from this RV manufacturer. There are several reasons I like the Imagine trailer. First off, it comes in 21 different floor plans. Even the smallest model comes with a queen-sized bed. There is no way I would want a travel trailer with anything smaller than a queen bed.

Grand Design Imagine Specifications

11 different floor plans in 3 lines, length: from 19 ft 11-inches to 36-feet 11-inches, one-piece roof membrane with 12-year warranty, arctic 4-seasons package, aluminum framed fully laminated sidewalls, uvw: 3,560 lbs to 8,394 lbs, gel-coated fiberglass exterior, double-insulated floor, roof, and front cap, heated and enclosed dump valves, factory installed rv solar power system.

The Imagine is also loaded with a ton of standard features. Here are just a few of the ones that stand out for me and for what I’m looking for:

Solid hardwood drawer fronts

Upgraded residential furniture, large double door refrigerator, large panoramic windows, residential quality countertops, 3-burner range with oven.

That’s what Oliver offers – each trailer is constructed with a double-hull fiberglass shell. This gives superior protection against all weather conditions. It’s not inexpensive, but is a testament to the brand’s commitment to quality and durability.

Whether it’s a specific floor layout, an advanced solar power system, or leather upholstery, Oliver makes it happen. It’s like getting a tailor-made suit, but this one’s an RV made to fit your camping style and needs.

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2

Inside the Legacy Elite 2 (Image: Oliver Travel Trailers)

The Oliver Legacy Elite 2 pictured above is my favorite model and probably one of their top-rated all-fiberglass campers. I like the Elite 2 for several reasons. I like that it has a dry weight of just 4,600 pounds. It can be towed with a good truck or full-size SUV. Keep in mind that 4,600 pounds is just the dry weight. For towing, you need to consider cargo weight too.

The Legacy Elite 2 comes in two-floor plans. One with twin beds and the with a dinette to 75″ x 79″ bed conversion. This model is loaded with standard features.

Oliver Legacy Elite 2 Specifications

Full custom molded interior and exterior insulated shells, plumbing, holding tanks, and drain pipes are enclosed between shells with heat to diminish the risk of freezing, quad shocks on dual dexter leaf spring axles, “nev-r-adjust” electric brakes for exceptional control and braking, molded vanity, norcold 3-way refrigerator 4.5 cubic ft. (12v, 11ov, lp), 15′ dometic awning, 22″ flat screen lcd tv, custom mounted speakers (4).

Oliver Travel Trailers are worth the money if you are shopping for a new RV. Their unique blend of luxury, superior construction, thoughtful design, customizability, and top-tier customer service, makes these fiberglass trailers a trustworthy companion on your road adventures.

Winnebago makes five popular travel trailer models as of 2023. One of the best travel trailer brands for new RVers and experienced ones alike is the Micro Minnie (which replaced the older Minnie Drop model that made our former list of the best travel trailers.

What I Like About the Micro Minnie

When it comes to striking a balance between compactness and living comfort, the Micro Minnie travel trailers hit the nail right on the head. These little marvels of RV engineering manage to pack a ton of amenities into a small, easy-to-tow package, proving that you don’t have to go big to enjoy the perks of home on the road.

A key aspect of Micro Minnies’ appeal is their towability. With a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 5,500 to 6,000 pounds, depending on the model, they can be comfortably towed by a variety of vehicles. Mid-size SUVs, pickup trucks, and some of the beefier crossovers make suitable companions for these compact travel trailers.

From the sturdy fiberglass shell to the energy-efficient appliances, every aspect of a Happier Camper trailer is thoughtfully designed for your comfort and convenience.

A notable Happier Camper HC1 feature is the expansive rear hatch that lets you easily load up a couple of bikes; even a kayak if water sports are your favorite outdoor activity. This is an awesome feature for such a small camper.

Happier Camper HC1 Specifications

100% double-hull insulation fiberglass, length: 10′ (shell), 13.5′ with hitch, width: 6′ 11″, exterior height: 7′ 4″, inside height: 6′ 1″, dry weight: 1,100 lbs., gvwr: 3,500 lbs., adaptive modules are all 20″ x 20″ and of varying height, rear hatch door:  54.5” w x 53.5” h.

One thing to keep in mind with the Happier Camper is that it does not have a typical toilet setup. The Happier Camper has a “ Dry Flush” toilet for RVs . That is the only drawback I see to this camper trailer. Remember, it is small, so don’t expect much room, but that is how it’s been designed. It’s modern, and makes exceptional use of the small interior.

#6. starcraft rv autumn ridge.

Another of our picks with a long history in the RV industry, Starcraft, started making metal farm equipment in 1903. In 1968 they began manufacturing campers. Today, what sets Starcraft apart from other small, affordable trailers is its smart construction. Made with TuffShell, Starcraft’s unique fiberglass wall construction, all Starcraft trailers give superior durability while remaining lightweight. This combination not only extends the lifespan of the RV but also makes towing a breeze, whether you tow with a full-size pickup or a mid-size SUV.

Step inside an Autumn Ridge, and he homey atmosphere helps you feel right at home wherever you park. Their kitchens are a standout, complete with a three-burner stove, a microwave, and a double-door refrigerator – all you need to whip up delicious meals on the road or at the campsite . After dinner, you can relax in the comfortable seating area, perhaps catch a show on the LED TV.

What Makes The Autumn Ridge a Best Travel Trailer?

Prior to the Autumn Ridge, the 2019 Starcraft Mossy Oak travel trailer was my preferred choice. This was a spacious camper available in 11-floor plans, including several travel trailer models with bunk beds . The Mossy Oak came in lengths from 23’4″ to 36’5″, making it the best predecessor of the Starcraft Autumn Ridge. This new model has many choices for RV buyers, with features that will make you want to own one too.

What I Like About The Lance Camper 1685

Of the 12 models of travel trailers Lance Campers makes in 2023, I like the 1685 model est. There are several reasons. The 1685 is one of their lightest travel trailer models, featuring a dry weight of just 4,690 pounds. The interior is roomy and has lots of storage space available, and the floor plan is intelligently designed and laid out for maximum space efficiency. It includes a wet bath which I have stated before, is one of my personal preferences in any RV we buy.

Lance Camper 1685 Specifications

Gvwr: 6300 lbs, gross dry weight: 4690 lbs., hitch dry weight: 575 lbs., overall length: 21’5”, exterior height: 10’2”, convertible dinette bed: 54” x 78”, fresh tank: 45 gal., grey tank: 40 gal., black tank: 40 gal., refrigerator: 6 cu. ft..

For a small travel trailer, the Lance Camper 1685 is outfitted with generous holding tank capacities. This reduces the frequency of water refills and dump station visits.

#8. shasta rv 18fq.

A division of Forest River, Shasta travel trailers have been a reliable companion for road travelers since 1941. If you’ve been camping a long time, the toaster-like look of the original Shaster brings back memories. What I love about Shasta trailers is they’re a great buy for the money.

Shasta trailers offer a wide range of towing capacities. Because these campers are crafted with a sturdy, lightweight aluminum exterior, they are durable but don’t add extra weight. Whether you already own a large truck for towing, or a family SUV, these campers are a great choice for anyone just starting their RV journey. Experienced RVers looking for an upgrade also find them a great fit.

Why You Should Consider the Shasta 18FQ

Over the years, Shasta has trimmed their travel trailer line to just the Shasta model, which is available as a typical pull-behind and a travel trailer tow hauler. The pull-behind is available in a whopping 14 different floor plans. Of all those plans, my favorite is the 18FQ.

The 18FQ is very well laid out. Stepping inside, you can’t help but appreciate the attention to detail. Kitchens come equipped with a three-burner cooktop, a generous refrigerator, and a microwave oven, giving you all the conveniences of a home kitchen on the road. The 18FQ includes a 60″ x 74″ bed mattress with overhead storage space above and a clothes wardrobe on either side. It has a dry bath with a separate toilet and shower, medicine cabinet and a linen closet.

#9. jayco jay flight slx.

With over 50 years of industry experience, Jayco has been one of the better brands in the RV industry. They have a loyal following and have always been very responsive to their customers. In 2016 Jayco was purchased by Thor Industries, which owns Airstream, among many other companies. Jayco’s quality, service, and customer responsiveness remain intact after the purchase by one of the world’s largest RV industry manufacturers.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX 2023 (Image: Jayco)

he Jay Flight SLX series is one of Jayco’s top-selling lines. These campers tick all the boxes for both beginner and experienced RVers, by making travel trailers that are easy to tow, durable, and feature-packed.

Why I Like The Jay Flight SLX

Of all the travel trailer models Jayco manufactures, I prefer the Jay Flight SLX. First off, it’s not a huge camper and very light for its size. This makes the SLX very manageable when it comes to towing. In 2023 the Jay Flight SLX is available in 5 floorplans. The floorplan choices offer something for every RVer, including bunkhouse and queen bed walk around models. Two models have slideouts.

Jayco Jay Flight SLX interior (Image: Jayco)

Some of the models feature a Simmons queen-size mattress which is a very comfortable camping mattress. I like that every Jay Flight SLX features a dry bath which is always nice. The bunk beds included in some models have a 4-inch mattress and a weight capacity of 300-pounds.

The galley has standard features such as two-range burners, a three cubic-foot fridge, a microwave, and solid-surface countertops. Chances are you are going to find a plan that works for your camping needs

Jayco Jay Flight Specifications

Unloaded vehicle weight: 2,415 – 2,890 lbs., cargo carrying capacity: 615 – 860 lbs., gross vehicle weight rating: 2,995 – 3,750 lbs., exterior length: 16′ 6″ to 21′ 8″, exterior height w/ a/c: 111 – 1/4″ to 111- 3/4″, interior height (living area): 73″, magnum truss™ roof system & diflex ii material, wall-mounted 8,000-btu a/c, grey tank: 20 gal., black tank: 20 gal., 2-burner cook top stove with microwave, 7 cu. ft. gas/electric refrigerator.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX offers a perfect entry point for beginner RVers, and a refreshing alternative for more experienced ones, thanks to its balance between ease-of-use, comfort, and construction quality.

15 Best Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs

Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs

Sharing is caring!

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are a blessing for those who don’t need the space. Maybe you lack a 1/2-ton or 3/4-ton truck and don’t need or want to drop the extra money on a much larger RV. They’re surprisingly versatile and the interior innovations towards creating more living space are incredible.

Lightweight travel trailers towable by the family vehicle are growing in popularity. Especially those with innovative solutions—such as slideouts and Murphy beds—to the space equation. A wet bath may take a little getting used to, but it’s more than understandable when compacting living space.

They’re also affordable and a more sensible option for travel trailer tent add-ons when you really want to expand those rest and relaxation spaces. With that being said, we’ve compiled some fantastic travel trailers under 3,500 lbs for your perusing pleasure.

All of these incredible options have some very attractive qualities and a few drawbacks, too – we tell it like it is.

Susan and Mike from RVBlogger have toured and reviewed dozens of travel trailers that weigh less than 3,00 lbs. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the info we share in this article!

1. Airstream Basecamp 16

Airstream Basecamp 16 Exterior. A great option in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

Our Pros and Cons

✅ 6’4″ height is a nice amenity for a 16′ travel trailer

⛔ The Basecamp design is more for off-road, boondocking experiences

  • Length: 16′ 2″
  • UVW : 2,650 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,500 lbs
  • CCC: 850 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 450 lbs

T he Airstream Basecamp 16 is an impressive little beast. It’s small, compact, yet roomy and made for adventuring into areas well off the beaten path. Despite its seemingly singular nature, it still retains the prototypical Airstream experience.

It’s the perfect option for couples since it only sleeps two, but you’ll never feel constrained within its aluminum environment. One of the best features of the Basecamp is the most obvious one—the panoramic front window. The view is what it’s all about and it’s why the Basecamp is the perfect adventure design.

The convertible dinette folds completely away for additional living space or it converts into a half bed, two single beds, or a full. The wet bath makes sense with the small design but it still feels more spacious than most.

You also have a choice between the 16 and 16X models, which mostly boil down to cosmetics, a few extra amenities, and living space.

2. Casita Spirit 17 Deluxe

Casita Spirit 17 Deluxe Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Deluxe model includes a bathroom and shower

⛔ The Deluxe model only sleeps 2, whereas the standard sleeps up to 6

  • Length: 17′
  • UVW : 2,480 lbs
  • CCC: 1,020 lbs

The Casita brand is a truly unique design, with nothing more than a 2-piece, marine-grade fiberglass body fused together into the travel trailer you see in the pic above. Though the design process is simple, it’s a beast of a camper, capable of extreme longevity with the proper maintenance.

As you would expect in a camper of this size, the sleeping area converts into a dinette, saving you some much-needed space. Regardless of the Casita model you choose, all of them come with microwaves, a two-burner stove, a power range hood with a light, and a silverware drawer.

Everything else that goes into the Casita Spirit is entirely up to you. It’s also a very lightweight trailer with a very large cargo-carrying capacity of half a ton. You can pack a lot into this animal and still have plenty of room to spare.

3. KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH

KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH one of the best travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Excellent design for five campers in a tiny bunkhouse

⛔ Five people can push into that 810 lb CCC spread pretty quickly

  • Length: 21′ 5″
  • UVW : 2,690 lbs
  • CCC: 810 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 280 lbs

The KZ Sportsmen Classic 180BH is a return to the more traditional exterior aesthetic on modern-day travel trailers. It’s small but it does a lot with the space, including a bunkhouse for when you want to bring the kids along for the ride.

It also features ample storage space, with passthrough storage included. The teddy bear mattresses on the bunks are more comfortable than some bunkhouses in more expensive and roomier RVs. With RVs this size, you don’t see full baths very often, which makes this KZ an even better choice for small families.

The exterior features a 9′ awning if you want to avoid the sun on a lazy afternoon. The easy-tow design, ample space, and plentiful amenities make this one of the more attractive options on the list.

The KZ 180BH is also a very affordable option, as low as $15k at some dealerships, which is hard to beat in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs.

4. Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW

Forest River Wolf Pup 14CCW Exterior

✅ Rear door entrance makes for a more spacious design

⛔ Not everyone is enamored with split baths

  • Length: 19′
  • UVW : 3,314 lbs
  • GVWR: 5,475 lbs
  • CCC: 2,161 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 375 lbs

‘Wolf Pup’ is an apt name for this tiny tike of a travel trailer. The Wolf Pup design features a rear-door entrance, which is a welcome departure from other travel trailers in its class. The split design allows for more up and down room along the length of the travel trailer.

Not everyone loves the split bath design but it makes perfect sense when it boils down to space-saving design features. Overall, the Wolf Pup 14CCw looks like a much larger RV shrunk down to a smaller size.

Just about everything you expect in a 30′ travel trailer seems to be in place here, with the exception of modest and understandable cuts to save space.

The exterior features a 10′ awning, with an exterior TV mount so you can take the whole family outside for a cookout and a movie. You also have some outside storage options and this runs into the best feature in the 14CCW—a full ton of cargo carrying capacity.

That’s right—you get a full ton plus 100 pounds for good measure. Prepare to load up for your next outing because the Wolf Pup can definitely handle it.

5. Vintage Cruiser 19TWD

Vintage Cruiser 19TWD Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Bedroom reading lights for some old-school reading in a retro RV

⛔ Vintage styles are popular but the aesthetic isn’t for everyone

  • Length: 23′
  • UVW : 3,035 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,380 lbs
  • CCC: 1,345 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 380 lbs

It’s hard not to love the growing popularity of retro-style RVs of which the Gulf Stream Vintage line is more than aware. The 19TWD is an excellent variation and features twin beds with a king insert on one end for a variety of sleeping arrangements.

If you love the look of old-school, roadside diners, that’s the vibe the Vintage Cruiser is rocking. The interior features a split bath with a surprisingly long bathtub on one side and the toilet/sink on the other. The vintage booth seating is perfect, considering the surroundings and it includes an extra counter as well.

The exterior, vintage graphics aside, the Cruiser features a welded aluminum frame with vacuum-bonded sidewalls. This maintains the lightweight while allowing for a spacious design. It features well over half a ton of cargo carrying capacity along with pass-through storage and plenty of storage options within.

It’s the perfect option for a small family of three or four.

6. Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ

Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ Exterior one of the most spacious travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Huge, full bathroom in the rear

⛔ Windows are a little lacking

  • Length: 20′ 5″
  • UVW : 2,910 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,850 lbs
  • CCC: 940 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 330 lbs

The Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ is a brilliant little travel trailer that manages to squeeze in a full bathroom in the rear of the RV. The Clipper also includes a queen bed on the opposite end with plenty of room in between.

There’s also nearly a ton in cargo carrying capacity, with plenty of room and storage options to pack for a big trip. The exterior features a 12′ awning for afternoons in front of the grill and pass-through storage so you can chew up some of that extensive CCC.

Thanks to its lightweight, the Clipper is already an advantage on the road. However, it also features an aerodynamic front that helps cut down on the wind resistance and the number of times you have to hit up the gas station each trip.

While the Clipper won’t blow your socks off in terms of new innovations, it’s a fantastic option for a very small family or a couple. It also boasts one of the more spacious interiors on this list.

7. Scamp 16’ Deluxe

Scamp 16’ Deluxe Exterior

✅ One of the most durable and long-lasting travel trailers on the market

⛔ Interiors need some decorating attention (on the bland side)

  • Length: 16′
  • UVW : 2,600
  • GVWR: 3,300 lbs
  • CCC: 700 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 225 lbs

There’s a reason that Scamp trailers manufactured back in the 1970s are still on the road today. Scamp manufactures one heck of a travel trailer and it’s built to last. The 16′ Deluxe version travels in the same circles as the Casita Spirit.

While the specs above are fixed, the reality is far different. There are so many customization options with the Scamp that nearly all of the above numbers are malleable.

If you’re looking for long-term travel and prefer to boondock, the Deluxe version is for you, since it features a wet bath. However, like the Casita, the addition of a bath cuts down on the available sleeping space, transforming the Scamp 16′ into a two-person show.

While the interior aesthetics are nothing to write home about, the solid fiberglass shell will last until the end of the earth and there’s always plenty of potential for personalization.

All Scamps feature a rear dining area that converts into a nice bed. The 16′ version also packs in the full kitchen setup, microwave, extra outlets, gravel shield exterior, and a group 24 battery pack.

8. Safari Condo R1713

Safari Condo R1713 Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Features a retractable roof (how cool is that?)

⛔ It’s essentially a spruced-up teardrop, so space is fairly constrained , especially with 4

  • Length: 17′ 3″
  • UVW : 1,825 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,700 lbs
  • CCC: 875 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: N/A

It’s hard not to look at this UFO-like teardrop and not be impressed. It seems like it was either made for space or it came from there. As far as travel trailers under 3,500 lbs go, the R1713 is a technological powerhouse, full of boondocking and off-grid goodies.

It even features a retractable roof. There are several other models with retractable roofs as well if it’s worth it for you to look at some larger sizes. Whether or not that opens the door to some interesting roof-tent options is up to you and your own innovative personality.

These campers are designed for going off the grid and staying that way for as long as possible. It comes with enough battery power for 200 amp hours of reserve capacity along with another two, 200-watt solar panels to keep the juice flowing.

It also features a heat pump A/C and a 2,000-watt inverter. The R1713 features two electric motors that essentially drive the travel trailer around via remote control. So, once you unhitch it, you can maneuver it any way you like.

It also features an outstanding build quality and it’s clear that these travel trailers are designed as the end-all-be-all of long-term, off-grid-possible teardrops.

9. Forest River R-Pod RP171

Forest River R-Pod RP171 Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Self-adjusting electric brakes

⛔ A/C units are optional on all R-Pods—not standard

  • UVW : 2,714 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,840 lbs
  • CCC: 1,126 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 340 lbs

Forest River R-Pods are unique-looking travel trailers and the RP171 is no exception. It’s kind of like someone took the concept of a teardrop and mashed it up with a much larger travel trailer that’s shaped like a marshmallow.

The end result is an intriguing aesthetic that works. One of the best things about R-Pods is the things that come standard, such as nitrogen radial tires, fiberglass roofs, aluminum wheels, and dual-battery racks.

For the RP171 in particular, that opens the doors for a wide range of options. If you’re considering the off-grid lifestyle or prefer boondocking this trailer is perfect. The exterior lights are incredibly bright LEDs, which cuts down on power consumption. The exterior also features sidewalls with an R9 insulation factor.

The RP171 has a spacious interior, with a queen bed on one end and a sizeable dinette on the other. Everything in the middle is pretty standard fare for travel trailers these days, even when they’re this small.

The RP171 was one of the first R-Pods in Forest River’s lineup of small, ultra-light trailers and they’ve had ample time to perfect it.

10. Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX

Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX Exterior

✅ Queen bed with walk-around room and flanking shirt closets

⛔ Two-burner cooktop is awfully small considering the counter space

  • Length: 21′ 6″
  • UVW : 3,124 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,880 lbs
  • CCC: 756 lbs

The Palomino Puma Ultra Lite 16QBX is a fantastic little travel trailer that’s ready to rock n roll at a moment’s notice. The queen bed with ample space surrounding it is especially notable. You can tell that Palomino was able to really work some extra living space into a relatively small RV.

This is the second travel trailer on the list with a full, rear bathroom that feels far more spacious than it really is. The shower features a bright, LED overhead light which is especially nice. After all, it’s hard to find fantastic lighting in a lot of RV showers.

The booth dinette is a nice touch as well, with plenty of table and counter space to go around. Another small but nice touch is the number of charging ports throughout the RV. In the age of the smartphone and tablet, there can never be enough of those it seems.

The Alpha Superflex Roof is highly durable and the 16QBX also features a Darco underbelly for protection over the road. If you’re itching to get away from it all, the 16QBX is prepped for solar power, along with a WiFi setup.

11. Jayco Jay Flight 184BS

Jayco Jay Flight 184BS Exterior a reliable option for travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Features a Jay S.M.A.R.T lighting system

⛔ A toilet and shower with no sink may turn off some potential customers

  • Length: 20′ 8″
  • UVW : 3,460 lbs
  • GVWR: 4,500 lbs
  • CCC: 1,040 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 395 lbs

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are nice and all but not all of them can claim a Jay S.M.A.R.T. lighting system. This lighting system is a fantastic innovation for safe traveling. A combination of signal indicators, running lights, taillights, and reverse lights all work in conjunction to create better lighting indicators on the road.

As far as the Jayco Jay Flight 184BS is concerned, we have another great, ultra-lightweight travel trailer option that actually sleeps up to 6 people. Not only do you have plenty of room for a small to mid-size family, but you also have better protection and safety for them on the road.

This travel trailer also features a slide-out, which is incredibly popular in this class of travel trailers. The slide-out holds the dinette, which makes for more living space even while the family gathers for dinner.

The rear tub and toilet sit right next to the bunkbeds for those overnight potty breaks. The overall interior space is also one of the largest on this list.

12. inTech Sol Eclipse

inTech Sol Eclipse Exterior a twist on travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Build quality is exceptional

⛔ The customization is so extensive it can be a little overwhelming

  • UVW : 2,775 lbs
  • CCC: 725 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 445 lbs

Though this is one of the smaller travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, it’s much like the Safari Condo R1713, a technological powerhouse packed into a tiny space. The inTech Sol Eclipse is all about customization options and you are free to communicate with them throughout the entire manufacturing process.

One of the things that sets inTech apart from its rivals is build quality. Each travel trailer is manufactured around a fully welded aluminum framework.

This helps inTech build components and customization options without placing extra strain on the frame. It also features a single-piece roof with R7 bubble-foil insulation.

The entire kitchen is in the front with a large, forward-facing window and two side windows for a panoramic viewing experience. Also, like the Safari Condo, the Sol Eclipse is designed with going off the grid in mind.

The plug-and-play nature of the design opens the door to a wealth of off-grid opportunities in terms of add-ons. If you prefer the road less traveled, this small travel trailer is perfect for you.

13. Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH

Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH Exterior

✅ Side A/C rather than a roof A/C makes it more aerodynamically sound

⛔ Black tank is only 5 gallons

  • Length: 16′ 6″
  • UVW : 1,748 lbs
  • GVWR: 2,500 lbs
  • CCC: 752 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 184 lbs

There’s a lot to love about the Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH. For one, it’s hard to imagine a travel trailer this small with a bunkhouse, yet here we are. It features a rear sofa bed with a simple, drop-down overhead bunk. Easy-peasy.

This is also an incredibly light model, considering its interior size. It doesn’t seem real, however, the floor is manufactured in a honeycomb composite material, while the RV is insulated in block foam and the fiberglass roof is a single piece.

Thanks to the small size, the air conditioner is placed as a window unit. This helps in the aerodynamics department, saving you some gas money that will add up over the years. Out of all the travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, this one is the lightest while retaining so much space to move around in.

14. Airstream Bambi

Airstream Bambi Exterior one of the classic travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ There are four floorplan options and all of them come with memory foam beds

⛔ Cargo carrying capacity is on the low end

  • Length: 16′ 1″
  • UVW : 3,000 lbs
  • CCC: 500 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 430 lbs

Airstream makes the list twice on this one, thanks to having two different ultra-lightweight travel trailer models. Neither has much to do with the other. Where the Basecamp is more for going off-grid, the Bambi is more of a traditional camper’s camper.

The Bambi comes in four models, all of which feature the iconic exterior with a bright interior aesthetic as well. The classic design is simple but elegant. If you love the white-colors aesthetic for a more sunshiny lifestyle, the Bambi will appeal to you all day long.

The living space feels spacious while the appliances are small and out of the way. Airstream Bambi features 12vdc compressor refrigerators and the wet bath is tight but exactly what you would expect on a 16′ travel trailer.

15. Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK

Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK Exterior - travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

✅ Gotta love the Murphy Bed!

⛔ Very limited counter space

  • Length: 19′ 1″
  • UVW : 3,080 lbs
  • GVWR: 3,800 lbs
  • CCC: 720 lbs
  • Tongue Weight: 360 lbs

Last but not least on our list of travel trailers under 3,500 lbs, we arrive at the Venture Sonic Ultra Lite SL150VRK . This one features a Murphy bed as an option and it makes a world of a difference inside an ultra-lightweight travel trailer.

This is one of the more roomy and spacious RVs on the list but it takes a little sacrifice in terms of counter space to get there. However, most potential buyers will recover when they see the large, full bathroom with half of the back wall dedicated to a pantry.

The StorMore bedside nightstands add the perfect touch to a comfy and roomy bed. The bedroom area is plenty large leaving room for you to walk around two flanking shirt closets. Impressive for such a small trailer.

One of the best features is the Venture LevelMate Pro, which lets you level this RV with your smartphone!

What Class Hitch Is Required To Tow 3,500 lbs?

Matching your travel trailer with the proper hitch is critical for safe towing. So which class of hitch is best for travel trailers in the 3500lb range?

A Class I hitch rated for 2000 lbs is far too underpowered and although a Class II hitch is rated for “up to” 3,500 lbs, you should stick with a Class III for anything with a GVWR that exceeds 3,500 lbs .

For instance, just because the travel trailer features a dry weight of 3,000 lbs, doesn’t mean you can’t approach that GVWR without threatening to overwhelm a Class II.

A Class II is perfectly fine for lightweight travel trailers like the Travel Lite RV Rove Lite 14BH or the Safari Condo R1713. However, with a Class II, you’re pushing it with an inTech Sol Eclipse and going too far overboard with the Jayco Jay Flight 184BS.

How Much Are Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs?

There’s a decent disparity among travel trailers under 3,500 lbs. Ultra lightweight travel trailers typically fall under the ‘entry-level’ category in terms of price, which is anything between $12k and $40k. Unfortunately, much of the price is reliant on brand rather than substance.

For instance, the Airstream Basecamp 16 has a starting price of $46k, which is $6k higher than the numbers we list above. Then there’s the Coachmen Clipper 17CFQ, which retails for around $26k. The Clipper is longer and roomier than the Basecamp.

Are there important and distinguishing features between the two? You bet. Is it worth an additional $20k? Well, a good deal of that is brand power, so it’s entirely up to you. On the bright side, maintenance on smaller RVs is a lot easier and more cost-effective than their larger brethren.

That’s not to say that any of the brands above lack amenities. All it means is brand carries value all by itself, long before you step inside the RV door for the first time.

It’s also important to remember that though these are smaller campers, a lot of technology and innovation goes into making them small while still retaining livability.

Can You Full-Time In Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs?

can you full-time in travel trailers under 3,500 lbs

You certainly can but there will be consequences you’ll have to overcome and you’ll need to get used to life without certain amenities. You’re looking at a very constrained space, every day, without change. You can relieve that somewhat with tent attachment options and more of an outside lifestyle.

We see many RVers who full time in small travel trailers use Clam tent enclosures to add additional outdoor living space to their camping experience.

Consistent power needs will take on a new dimension, depending on whether you are boondocking or grabbing shore power at every opportunity. One of the biggest obstacles to overcome, mostly if you like living off-grid for sustained periods or just prefer boondocking, is tank size.

Those fresh, grey, and black tanks are capable of dictating your life if you let them. You will have to get innovative.

Smaller RVs often equate to cheaper construction and may not be up to par depending on where you plan on taking them. For instance, the Basecamp 16 is far more off-road worthy than the R-Pod.

Regardless of what your lifestyle preference is, do your homework on these models beforehand and make sure you know what you are getting into.

Final Thoughts About Travel Trailers Under 3,500 lbs

Travel trailers under 3,500 lbs are an absolute blast, especially if you are into the adventurous spirit and hitting the road with your significant other.

Are they the best option in the world for full-time living? Maybe—maybe not. But they are incredibly versatile, which opens up a lot of doors for your own, personal innovations and style.

The above-listed options feature some fantastic choices with a number of different styles and amenities. If you can’t find something perfect for your next adventure on this list, you probably won’t find it anywhere else.
