The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Grand Cayman Island, George Town Harbour. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

George Town (Grand Cayman Island) is the principal port (and cruise port) and the capital city of the British Overseas Territory of Cayman Islands. The group also includes Little Cayman Island and Cayman Bra Island .

Port George Town Harbour (locode USGGE) is one of the most visited on Western Caribbean cruise itineraries leaving from the USA.

Grand Cayman is located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica. The island's population is around 65,000, while in George Town live around 30,000. As a cruise destination, Grand Cayman attracts travelers with its underwater attractions (perfect for scuba diving), beautiful beaches, shopping. Among the largest cruise companies with regularly scheduled visits to George Town are the Carnival Corporation ships (CCL-Carnival, Princess, Holland America, AIDA), also RCG-Royal Caribbean Group ships (RCI, Celebrity), MSC, NCL-Norwegian, DCL-Disney, TUI, Marella UK.

In December 2018 was announced that Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group will finance the construction of a new cruise pier project. In late February 2019, the industry's largest companies joined DCL-Disney , and in May 2019 - MSC .

  • The project's financing (~KYD 200 million / ~USD 240M) was to be exclusively private, with no public money used to build the new facilities. The financial contributions were not revealed.
  • Cruise shipping companies and selected bidders had to provide all funds to construct the new/larger berthing facility plus a cargo dock, and for 20 years to collect all passenger fees.
  • The "Cruise Berthing Facility Project" was estimated to support ~500 construction jobs plus local employment and ~USD 245 million in economic benefits.
  • So far, the new cruise port project is a dead issue.

The world-famous Seven Mile Beach attracts with its crystal clear waters, amazing panorama and infrastructure featuring numerous hotels, seaside bars and restaurants. Among the best-known beach locations is also Royal Caribbean's exclusive beach resort "Royal Palms Beach Club".

Royal Palms is an approx 10-min taxi ride from RCI's cruise ship tendering point. To go there, just exit the passenger tendering area, pass the shore tours area and go into the parking lot from where take a taxi (rates around USD 4 pp). Royal Palms pricing includes

  • USD 2 pp entrance fee
  • USD 15 per day umbrella rental
  • USD 10 beach chair rental
  • USD 100 beach cabana rental
  • USD 10 per day locker

Watersport rentals (cost per hour) include

  • jet ski ($75)
  • jet pack ($150)
  • snorkeling gear ($15)
  • paddleboard ($25)
  • seakayak ($25)
  • parasail ($80)
  • serenity float ($12)
  • snorkeling tour ($35)

Royal Palms has open-air restaurant, beach bar, outdoor swimming pool.

In October 2021, the Turks and Caicos' Tourist Board announced a US$25 million (EUR 21,5M / GBP 18,1M) investment (by Carnival Corporation) in the Grand Turk Cruise Center. Most of the funding (US$25M) was for property acquisitions - for building a vendor’s market and vendors accommodations, as well as a new floating dock (to be used by local watersports operators). Also was announced that between 2021-2023, Grand Cayman will inaugurate new luxury hotel properties by the brands Ritz-Carlton, Grace Bay Resorts, and Hyatt's Andaz Hotels. The new resort accommodation options range from residential homes (1-6 bedroom apartments) to 2-3-4-bedroom hotel suites and 2-level penthouses.

Due to the global COVID crisis, in 2020 (March 31st) the Cayman Islands officially closed borders. The policy also affected cruise vessels, which were banned from docking at its ports through January 2022.

  • In July 2021, the Cayman Islands Government announced a 5-phase reopening plan, with January 27, 2022, being the date when all tourists will be allowed to visit the country (without quarantine periods or travel restrictions).
  • The cruise shipping industry effectively ceased operations in the country for 21 months (in the period April 2020 through February 2022).

According to FCCA data (Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association), in 2019, the Cayman Islands were visited by 2+ million cruise tourists.

Grand Cayman Island cruise terminal

George Town is a tender cruise port. Cruise ships anchor and their passengers are transported to the terminal's pier via the ship's tender boats or local (commercial) tenders. Usually, ship's anchorage is approx 15 min away from the cruise terminal.

Port George Town has 3 tender terminals located along the main shoreline road - South Terminal, North Terminal, and Royal Watler Pier. Tourist offices are available close to the South and North terminals.

Terminal buildings at all cruise ship tender docks are small, shaded areas where passengers are gathered for tours or wait there to be tendered back to the cruise ship.

All cruise terminals are located within walking distance from most of downtown's highlights. Cayman Islands have their own public transportation service. Taxis are also readily available on the island.

(NEW) Grand Cayman Cruise Terminal

In May 2017, the seaport announced a project for constructing a new/larger cruise ship terminal in George Town Harbour. The new facility is all-privately funded (by Carnival, RCG-Royal Caribbean Group, DCL-Disney, and MSC) and involves a construction company for the new piers building in return for a percentage of annual revenue that the terminal generates (mainly from passenger fees / ~US$8 per person).

In July 2019, for the Cruise Berthing Facility Project (KYD 200 million / USD 240 million), the Cayman Government selected VIPP (Verdant Isle Port Partners) as the preferred bidder. VIPP is a consortium that consists of RCG-Royal Caribbean and CCL-Carnival Cruise Line , plus two construction companies (Orion Marine Construction, and McAlpine).

The funding was from both cruise companies plus a loan from CIBC-FirstCaribbean International Bank. The expected revenue for the companies from the new terminal was ~KYD 333 million (USD 400M) over its 25-year lifespan, based on estimated ~2 million passengers annually.

The berthing facility includes 2-finger piers built on pilings. The project is supervised by DBFM (STROISERVIS group of companies) specializing in design, financing, building and maintenance. The new facility will be operated by the Grand Cayman Port Authority Company.

Grand Cayman (George Town) Cruise Port Guide and Review (2023)

Photo of George Town Harbour in Grand Cayman Cruise Port

Essential guide to Grand Cayman (George Town) cruise port: tender boats and terminals, shore excursions or on your own by bus, and what's withing walking distance.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 28, 2023

George Town is the capital city of Grand Cayman and the port which all cruise ships visit. For those that have never been in this very popular cruise port, the cruise traveler should know that this is what is called a tender port .

Map of showing the 3 Cruise Terminals in George Town

Anchoring, tender boats and terminals

All cruise ships will anchor in the large bay right in front of George Town and double decked local boats will take passengers to one of the 3 piers-terminals right by the city. Regardless of the Pier/Terminal used, as you walk out the exit gates, the cruise traveler will be on the main road - Harbor Drive .

The main docking spot for the tenders is the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal on the northern part of George Town . This a rather large open area with a good number of shops (mainly souvenirs), taxis, tourist info, tour booths and a couple of bars - the Green Parrot is a famous hang out for those returning to the ship and waiting for tender boats.

But it can also happen that you will be tendering to any of the other two piers when there are more than a couple of ships in port, which happens very often. If tendering to either North or South Terminals , the cruise traveler will literally walk off the tender right into Harbor Drive as the terminal buildings are small and do not have much more than waiting areas with passenger controlling gates.

All these piers are within walking distance to the main attractions of George Town - Margaritaville, the Museum, all major Shops, and Restaurants.

To explore Grand Cayman on your own, there are taxis right outside any of the Terminals and a Bus Station within walking distance with services to all main destinations, attractions and most highlights. This is arguably the best way to travel around, deserving an additional word about the public bus service in Grand Cayman.

The public bus is naturally the most affordable way to explore Grand Cayman. Although many a cruise traveler may feel uneasy with public buses in the Caribbean, you shouldn't be as these are very safe , very well kept and a great way to travel around in Grand Cayman.

Central Bus Station in George Town Grand Cayman

Central Bus Station in George Town

The Central Bus Station in George Town is known as District Bus Depot and is located by Heroes Square , the main landmark in the town, between the Public Library and the CIBC bank. The Public Bus Depot is no more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) from any of the Terminals, as you can see on the map below.

Map showing walking paths to Central Bus Station in George Town Grand Cayman

Buses are small vans but with air condition, clean, inexpensive and everyone is very friendly - in fact, you will find that many visitors to Grand Cayman use the Public Bus services. Buses to the Seven Mile Beach depart every 10 to 15 minutes and cost US$ 2.50 per person each way. Most top attractions are served by these public buses costing US$ 2.50 to Turtle Farm , Hell , Pedro Castle or Pirate Cave ; to the Botanical Gardens ticket is $5.00 and $10.00 to Rum Point .

Shore Excursions or On Your Own

Like on any cruise port, your ship has a number of excursions aka 'Shorex' available to enjoy a day in Grand Cayman. Some are really a great and convenient way to make the best of your time in port.

However, many of the attractions offered on these tours/excursions can easily be explored on your own. This can be a good way to do it in Grand Cayman not only because the island is small, very safe and hospitable to cruise passengers but also because it is so easy to travel around - be it by bus, taxi or car rental.

Segaway Tour in Grand Cayman

Segway Tour

In fact, it became so easy for cruise passengers to just walk in or book excursions online that some tour operators do not allow cruise passengers to book tours. Segway , for example, doesn't allow Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise passengers to book directly online and refers clients to the onboard Shore Excursions Manager. Which begs interesting questions : how on earth will Segway know that you are on a cruise if you don't tell them? What jurisdiction applies if you are 'caught'? Is it a crime? Says who?

Exploring George Town

George Town is such a small place that the cruise visitor will be able to see it all at leisure. The city expands to the East but most attractions are close to the Harbor Drive and the two blocks inland. In the northern part of Harbor Drive, where the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal is located, you will find a few shops and right in front of the exit gate a street - Front Street - that will take you (around 100 yards/meters) right to Heroes Square .

Heroes Square, George Town in Grand Cayman

Heroes Square

On this square, with a modern fountain at its center near the already mentioned and convenient Bus Terminal, the visitor will find a few landmarks: the Town Hall, the Library, and the Court House. Along the Front Street, there are a few typical shops found everywhere in the Caribbean like Effy, Tanzanite International, Tortuga Rum Cake and Duty-Free Liquors or Milano Diamonds. But if shopping is your thing, the best shops are on or closer to Harbor Drive.

Fort George in Grand Cayman

Fort George

Walking South of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal (right turn at the exit gate) the cruise traveler will find the ruins of the Fort George and right in front the first of numerous duty-free shopping buildings - Flagship with an array of stores. Don't be surprised to find that the Fort George ruins are comprised of a couple of small remains (cannons) and that you may even pass by without realizing that 'those' are the remains of the landmark most travel guides talk about - feel free to join the Editor in wondering if such travel journalists have ever really been in the places described.

Elmslie Church in Grand Cayman

Elmslie Church

One block farther and you will see the Elmslie Memorial United Church on your left - a typical Caribbean small, quaint church, with a roof in the form of a ship’s hull turned upside down. The active Presbyterian church is very well maintained and worth a pick inside.

Margaritaville in Grand Cayman

Margaritaville In George Town, Grand Cayman

Right after, the bright colors of Margaritaville stand out in the Island Plaza Mall. Margaritaville in George Town is a bit smaller than most in the Caribbean but the ambiance is pretty much the same. By contrast, the Island Plaza shopping mall is slightly different than others in the Caribbean as most shops are locally owned and, therefore, you will find different brands and merchandise - Blackbeard's Liquors and Churchill's Cigars are a couple of the Editor's favorites - but also boutiques with typical brands like Pandora, Tag Heuer, or Breitling. At the end of the block, Cardinal Avenue is a continuation of the best shops in George Town - Cartier Boutique, Magnum Jewelers, Kirk, La Perfumerie, Time Zone, among others.

Duty Free Shops in Grand Cayman

Duty Free Shops

Landmark Building in Grand Cayman

Landmark Building

The next block is dominated by three colonial buildings with the ground floors displaying a string of duty-free shops - Shipwreck Coins Antiques is the one of a kind to have a look at, as is La Casa del Habano if looking for good Cuban cigars. The upper floors of the first building are occupied by Breezes , a Tropical Grill also serving pizza that is popular with crew members.

National Museum in Grand Cayman

National Museum

But it is on the next block that the visitor will find the most interesting (but lesser talked about) attraction in George Town - the Cayman Islands National Museum . This small museum is really worth a visit. Housed in a beautiful white colonial house, the museum showcases diverse exhibits of the Cayman Islands history and present reality. The exhibition is small but very well organized and displayed.

Bayshore Mall in Grand Cayman

Bayshore Mall

On the opposite side of Harbor Drive, by the sea, you will not miss the South Terminal and right across the massive Bayshore Mall . This is the top attraction for those on a shopping spree. Owned and operated by locals, the name Kirk Freeport may not mean much to most passengers cruising the Caribbean who are used to the typical ubiquitous brands promoted onboard all cruise ships.

However, this is a refreshing change with a more diverse selection of brands, good prices and, above all, without the 'buying-pressure' found elsewhere. Besides the Kirk Freeport shops, the cruise traveler will also find on the Bayshore Mall other boutiques (like Swatch ), a luxury Spa (Tips n Toes) and a few places to have a quick bite: Cayman Creperie (French crepes), Häagen-Dazs (ice cream), Lucky Slice (best pizza in town) and Stax (Indian Goan with a Caribbean touch).

South of George Town

South Terminal in Grand Cayman

South Terminal

Many cruise visitors tend not to explore much farther south of the Bayshore Mall but right in front (next to the South Terminal) you will see the Atlantis Submarines Cayman (and glass bottom Boat) which will redirect you to booking trough your cruise line and on the next corner the inevitable Hard Rock Cafe . A typical and famous Cayman souvenir shop - TooHot - and the famous artist Guy Harvey's gallery are next to each other and right after Hard Rock.

Guy Harvey Gallery in Grand Cayman

Guy Harvey Gallery

Both are worth a visit and in particular the Harvey's Gallery as this is probably one of the largest and best collections of the artist's work you will see in the Caribbean. On the next block, Guy Harvey also gives the name to an excellent restaurant with wonderful views - entrance on side street (Merrendale Dr). On the same block, the cruise traveler will not miss the Harley Davidson shop, the Blue Iguana Souvenir Outlet and the Church of God Full Gospel Hall.

Craft Market in Grand Cayman

Craft Market

The Cayman Craft Market is the next attraction (where you may find a local hand-made souvenir) and, hidden inside on a large office building, there is an off the beaten track cafe/bar, South West Collective , know by savvy cruisers for excellent coffee, quick bites, and free Wi-Fi . On the ocean side, with a spectacular location and view, Paradise is both a restaurant (cuisine doesn't match the quality of the location) and shore diving and snorkeling spot. Around 120 yards/meters south of Paradise, you will find Eden Rock Diving Center - one of the best dives in Cayman - and 300 yards/meters farther, another diving center ( Don Foster's Dive ).

If lunch in a spectacular setting with historical charm is on your must do in Grand Cayman, then the Grand Old House - 2 miles (2.8km) south of George Town - is the right place to go. This former plantation house established in 1908 has been transformed into a wonderful restaurant with colonial style indoor rooms and a panoramic waterfront terrace serving local and international flavors and a famous wine list.

North of George Town

Fish Market in Grand Cayman

Fish Market

North of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, Harbor Drive changes the name to North Church Street . At walking distance, there a few nice places to enjoy. The first you will come across is a very talked about fish market. If you read about this in many a review, you may expect a large sort of venue but, in fact, the Fish Market is no more than a couple of tented stalls on a small sandy cove with fishermen cleaning fish - a nice site but not the huge highlight as some like to emphasize. Immediately after, you will not miss the Cayman Cabana restaurant sign - a great place to have lunch or just a drink on the open deck with wonderful ocean views. But the main attraction is really the Sea Trek Experience on the lower deck of the restaurant - here you can safely and comfortably explore the underwater world with a helmet diving system.

Scuba Diving in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Casanova in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Casanova

Next to Sea Trek (and Cayman Cabana restaurant) there is another restaurant which is very popular among cruise passengers - Casanova , a good Italian as the name implies - and next to this another diving experience at the Divers Down , which offers an array of tours and a dive to the Wreck of Kittiwake , a US Navy submarine rescue vessel sunk as an artificial reef and one of the most request dive sites on Grand Cayman.

Restaurant Rackam's in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Rackam's

Rackam's Bar and Grill is just a few meters away and is one of the Editor's favorite stops in George Town. No more than 300 meters/yards north of the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, Rackam's has wonderful views, great service, typical Caribbean food and free Wi-Fi - naturally, both savvy cruisers and experienced crew members are regular patrons. Nautilus is next to Rackam's and offers underwater tours on a semi-submarine with a spacious air-conditioned observatory but also sailing Catamaran excursions (3 hours) for to the world famous Stingray City .

Restaurant Da Fish Rack in Grand Cayman

Restaurant Da Fish Rack

On the next 100 meters (yards) you will find three other popular restaurants with great views and food - Da Fish Shack , Le Vele Restaurant and the Lobster Pot (which also has a diving center on the ground floor). In between, there are a few services and shops that might be of interest for cruise passengers - Cayman Auto Rentals (and scooters), the Cayman Helicopter Tour store and Liquor 4 Less (duty-free store - does a Budweiser 6 pack for $9.99 sound appealing?).

Caymana Bay in Grand Cayman

Caymana Bay

Farther north and too much of a stretch to walk - short of 1 mile (1.3km) - you should know that for some time now the Wharf Restaurant is only open for dinner and, next to it, the small and secluded (public) Pageant Beach is nice but not comparable with any other the world famous beaches in Grand Cayman.

Royal Palms Beach in Grand Cayman

Royal Palms Beach

Not too far from George Town, the cruise traveler will find two of the Editor's favorites in Grand Cayman: the Royal Palms Beach Club right on a beautiful spot of the Seven Mile Beach and across the road - Camana Bay an unexpected oasis with great restaurants, shops and very close to the wonderful National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. Both Royal Palms and Camana Bay are at too far to walk from George Town - around to 2 miles (2.9 km) - and it is way more convenient to get on a bus ($2.50 each way per person).

TRAVEL BY SHIP ACROSS EVERY SHADE OF BLUE

Grand Cayman is home to George Town, where up to four cruise ships can anchor at one time. If there are more than four cruise ships in port, the others remain in the harbour. Passengers are ferried to one of three terminals, all of which are about five minutes away. For those sailing by charter, we have two major ports of entry. One is located on Grand Cayman and the other is on Cayman Brac. Port Security greets travellers on VHF Channel 16 around the clock and, upon entering the Cayman Islands territory, vessels must fly the Q flag. All guns, spear guns, and other weapons must be left with customs. Outside fruit and plant life are not allowed on island. Many of our waters are environmentally protected and there are regulations to preserve these areas. Fixed moorings should be used instead of anchor chains to prevent coral damage. Gill nets and poison are prohibited. Spear guns and seine nets require a licence from the Cayman Marne Conservation Board. Removal of marine life (coral, sponges) is prohibited. There are also specific terms regarding fishing for lobster, conch, and grouper. For more information, please call the  Maritime Authority at 345-949-8831.

The Cayman Islands are the British Overseas Territory lying south of Cuba, in the western Caribbean Sea. They comprise three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman Cruise Port

Grand Cayman cruise port is located in George Town, the capital of Grand Cayman nestled in the southwest corner of the island.

Grand Cayman is a tender port which means that the cruise terminal doesn’t have docking facilities. Instead, the cruise ships drop the anchor in the bay in front of George Town and use the large, fast tender boats to bring the passengers ashore.

Georgetown cruise port consists of three cruise piers/terminals: North , South , and the Royal Watler cruise terminal , all located close to each other, within a 5-minute walk from the George Town city center.

Grand Cayman cruise port

The main terminal is the Royal Watler cruise terminal and this is where the passengers get off/get on the tender boats. Once you get off the tender boat, you’ll see the security gates and the port staff who will point you to the exit. Getting around is easy and there is no way you can get lost.

Once you pass the security gates, you’ll find yourself in a large area where you can find free restrooms, souvenir shops, a Tortuga Rum liquor store, several bars, coffee to take away, and numerous tour operator stands.

Alternatively, your cruise ship may dock at the North or South terminals . These are smaller and consist of smaller terminal buildings with security gates and waiting areas. From there, you can directly access Harbour Drive, the main street in George Town, as well as tour buses and taxis.

Getting Around Georgetown Cruise Port

  • The tender boat ride takes 10-15 minutes, but the whole process of filling the tender boats and getting on/off takes longer, so always save at least 45 minutes for the tendering operation. The same goes for the way back – you may experience long lines and crowds upon getting back to the ship, so make sure you board your tender boat at least 1 hour before cruise ship departure time.
  • The shore excursion meeting location is normally at the Royal Watler terminal area. You’ll see several differently colored tents (red, green, yellow, orange, blue, white, etc.) and under the tents, there are tour operator booths where you check in for your excursion. ( Note: This depends on the cruise line, so always double-check the information on your tour ticket ). Royal Watler cruise terminal is extremely busy when there are several ships in port, and you might have difficulties in finding your meeting place due to the crowds. Therefore, make sure you come on time and follow the instructions on your tickets.
  • Tour buses and taxis are parked outside the terminal area. Most of the taxis are small minivans that require several people to operate.
  • George Town and the port area are flat and suitable for wheelchair users/people with walking difficulties.
  • The island is safe to move around.
  • The cheapest option to get around the island is by local bus . Buses are small, the tickets are cheap, and if you see them on the street, you can also wave and they usually stop to pick you up. The Public Transit Bus Depot is the main bus station and is located at Heroes Square, only a few minutes’ walk from the terminal. From there, you can take a bus to Seven Mile Beach, Pedro St. James, Turtle Farm, and other island attractions.
  • The Cayman Islands currency is the Caymanian dollar (KYD). 1 USD equals 0.80 KYD. Credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted, so there is no need to change the money to a local currency. ATMs are available downtown.
  • Although Grand Cayman’s climate is tropical, hot and humid all year round, the weather is quite unpredictable. The Cayman Islands are one of the Hurricane most affected areas in the Caribbean and tropical storms and strong winds are frequent.
  • Because of the unpredictable weather, snorkeling, sailing, Turtle Farm, Stingray City, and other shore excursions may be canceled last minute due to safety reasons. The tour operators may not know it until the very last moment, so I would advise you to always have an alternative option.
  • Owen Roberts International Airport is the main international Grand Cayman airport and is located 4 km/2.5 miles (less than a 10-minute drive) from the Grand Cayman cruise terminal.
  • Major cruise lines sailing to the port of George Town Grand Cayman include Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line.

Situated in the middle of the North Sound of Grand Cayman, a 25-minute ride from the Royal Watler Cruise Terminal (19 km/11.8 miles), Stingray City Sandbar is a popular island attraction and a shore excursion offered by both cruise lines and local tour operators.

The water is shallow, only 2-4 feet, ideal for kids and families who want to spend a fun-filled day interacting with the largest stingrays in the Caribbean!

6. USS Kittiwake Shipwreck

Grand Cayman boasts several great locations for snorkeling, including the USS Kittiwake shipwreck, a salvage and rescue vessel that was operational for over 50 years, sunk in 2011, and transformed into an artificial reef and an underwater attraction.

The USS Kittiwake lies in the north portion of Seven Mile Beach, and to get there, you need to take a 15-minute ride up north along Seven Mile Beach, and then board a boat that will get you to the shipwreck.

The USS Kittiwake is the most popular diving location as well. The maximum depth is 65 ft, with the top of the wreck around 15 ft. The wreck was cleared of all hazardous materials and it is completely safe to explore its chambers and the abundant sea life.

The site has a sandy bottom and is packed with thousands of beautiful colorful fish, conchs, some stingrays, and starfish.

Grand Cayman Snorkel

Besides the USS Kittiwake shipwreck and artificial reef, there are two other snorkel sites you should check out: Wreck of the Cali, the closest one to the cruise port, and the Smith’s Barcadere, located a 5-minute driving distance south of George Town.

To get to the Wreck of the Cali , all you have to do is turn left upon exiting the terminal, walk along the main street for less than 5 minutes and you’ll spot the fish market. Opposite the market, there is Rackham’s dock, from where you can swim to the wreck that is located 40 yards off the shore. It lies at a depth of 15-20 ft and is easily spotted as the water is quite calm and clear. The distance being long, this snorkeling site is not recommended for first-time snorkelers, but if you don’t mind swimming, this place is perfect.

Smith’s Barcadere is the sandy cove where you can snorkel from the shore. A calm sea, gentle waves, and an intimate atmosphere are what make it perfect for those who want to escape crowded places.

7. White House Colonial Mansion

Located a 25-minute drive (17 km/10.5 miles) east of the George Town port, the White House is an exclusive private mansion offering all-inclusive service to its visitors. The mansion dates from the colonial period and is a perfect beach escape for those who want to enjoy privileged treatment and exclusive service.

You can enjoy the specialties of Grand Cayman’s amazing cuisine and great cocktails at their bar restaurant, or relax on the sunbeds and loungers while taking in the views of the pristine sands and emerald water.

The only thing I didn’t quite like was the beach – it can be accessed only from the short ladder at the end of the bar deck and it has a rocky bottom. If you want to go kayaking or snorkeling, you can do it as well. Make sure you bring your snorkel gear, but if you don’t have one, you can rent it on-site too.

8. Crystal Caves

Set in the lush tropical vegetation, Grand Cayman Crystal Caves are located on the North Side, a 35-minute drive (30 km/18.5 miles) from the George Town cruise terminal.

In the company of a knowledgeable tour guide, you can explore the three breathtaking caves and their impressive geological formations, along with the surrounding tropical forests, home to abundant flora and fauna. The tour of the caves lasts usually up to 1h 30 minutes, and there is also a gift shop where you can get souvenirs and refreshments.

9. Go to Hell

Located a 20-minute driving distance north (11.5 km/7 miles) from the Grand Cayman port, in the West Bay district (close to the Turtle Center and Dolphin Reserve), the Hell is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.

This bizarre natural attraction covers the football field-size area featuring jagged, black limestone rock formations that are said to be millions of years old. The legend says that back in the past an early British Commissioner was touring the island and upon arriving at this site, he exclaimed “My God, this must be what Hell looks like!”

Another story says that a British Commissioner named Cardinal was visiting the area and came with friends on a bird shooting expedition. In the vicinity of the rocks, he aimed, shot, and missed. His friends muttered “Oh, Hell”, and the place later became known as “Hell”.

The Hell, Grand Cayman

There is an elevated platform from where you can take unique photos and observe this natural marvel. The rocks are razor sharp and it’s forbidden to climb them. There are two gift shops where you can purchase souvenirs, as well as a post office from where you can send your postcards from Hell to your loved ones. There is no charge to enter Hell.

Check out the Hell tours and activities

10. Pedro St. James

Located a 20-minute drive (12 km/7.5 miles) from the George Town port, on the southern coast of the island, Pedro St. James is the restored 18th-century plantation home offering history exhibits and tours.

Constructed on a stunning location overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Pedro St. James is the Cayman Islands National Historic Site that belonged to the wealthy Englishman who, back in 1780, created an astonishing 3-story building using slave labor from Jamaica. The building was massive compared to neighboring single-level dwellings and ever since has been called “Castle” due to its imposing size.

Pedro St. James

Today, it is a history museum where you can explore 18th-century furniture and authentic artifacts, see the Stamp Room and Hurricane Ivan Memorial, or go for the rum tasting. The highlight of the visit is the 20-minute theater show that reveals the fascinating history of Pedro St. James and the Cayman Islands.

George Town, Grand Cayman Cruise Port Guide

The capital of the Cayman Islands and the largest of all British Overseas Territories by population, George Town is one of the most visited Caribbean cruise destinations boasting a rich tourist offer and the most beautiful sandy beaches in the world. The Royal Watler cruise terminal is the only cruise terminal on the island located in the southwestern corner of the island, within walking distance from George Town city center.

grand cayman cruise port address

George Town is a tender cruise port, which means that the cruise terminal doesn’t have docking facilities for the cruise ships. Instead, cruise ships drop the anchor a bit further in the sea and use double-decker tender boats to transfer the passengers ashore. The Royal Watler cruise terminal consists of three different piers where the tender boats dock. Upon getting off your tender boat, it is very easy to get around, as there are signs and security staff everywhere.

Once you pass the security gates you’ll find yourself at a large area where you’ll see differently colored tents and check-in desks for shore excursions, and this is where you normally check-in for your tours and where the tour operators will meet you. However, be careful and arrive on time for your tour meeting time, because you might encounter difficulty in finding your check-in desk due to the huge crowds. This area is packed with people from all ships (if there is more than one ship in port) which might create confusion, so make sure you follow the instructions on your tickets.  Besides the tour operators, here you will find souvenir shops, Tortuga Rum liquor store, a small building where you can use restrooms for free, a few bars, coffee to take away, and more. The tour buses and taxis are located outside the terminal, less than a 5-minute walking distance from there.

As soon as you step out of the cruise terminal area, you’ll spot the main street – Harbour Drive, the central hub of the town where the majority of the landmarks, bars, shops, and restaurants are located.

Here you’ll find the ruins of Fort George, a historical landmark consisting of two cannons and remains of one of the oldest structures in the town dating from the 18th century – Fort George, the fortification that used to overlook and protect the harbor. Less than a minute walk from there you will spot the main town square – the Heroes Square, featuring fountains, sculptures, and a monument to the National Heroes of Grand Cayman. Here you’ll find the Public Transit Bus Depot, the main bus station, where you catch a bus to the Seven Miles beach, the most popular beach on the island, Turtle Farm, Pedro Castle, and other island attractions.

The square is surrounded by the Public Library, Courthouse, and the Town Hall in front of which there is a beautiful Clock Tower. A few blocks from there, overlooking the cruise port, you’ll come across the beautiful Elmslie Memorial United Church, dating from the 19th century, very well preserved and maintained. A stone’s throw from there, the 19th century Cayman Island National Museum is a great choice for those who want to soak up local history. George Town is full of banks, internationally recognized brand shops, liquor stores, restaurants, bars, and much more. Margaritaville, located a 5-minute walk from the terminal, is among the top choices for cruise passengers.

Shore excursions to Stingray City (19 km from the cruise port), Turtle Center (13 km), Pedro St. James castle (12 km), and other attractions are offered, but you can also explore these places on your own – the choice is all yours!

Seven Mile Beach, the most attractive beach on the island featuring a long stretch of picture-perfect, white sandy beach lined with luxurious hotel resorts and beach bars, is located a 15-minute drive north of the cruise terminal. One of the most unique places for snorkelling is at Stingray city. These shallow waters (3,5 meters, 12 foot) is where you are going to find the famous stingrays of Grand Cayman. Find dozens of them here in the water.

Grand Cayman has several beaches. The best ones are situated on the west side of the island and luckily Georgetown is close to them (about 2,5 km away). The most popular beach on the island would be Seven Mile beach This 6,6 mile long beach called 7 mile beach is one of the best known beaches of the Caribbean and it is just a short ride away from Georgetown. The beach is ideal for snorkelling, for finding a high end resort or just a public beach. You can find it all on 7 mile beach. Just mention to your taxi driver what you are looking for (watersports, resort, bar, public beach etc.) and he’ll know where to drop your off. You could also walk from the tender pier to Seven Mile beach, but take into account it is at least a 30 minute (2,5 km) walk in the heat.

Grand Cayman Cruise Port

Grand Cayman is a popular cruise ship destination in the Caribbean, drawing in hundreds of thousands of cruisers each year. Nestled in the Western Caribbean, it is the largest of the three Cayman Islands. The island is celebrated for its pristine white sandy beaches, delectable cuisine, vibrant culture, and rich historical heritage.

This article offers a detailed guide to the cruise port of Grand Cayman, providing information on the top activities and dining choices to explore during your visit to the island.

About the Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are a tropical paradise located in the Caribbean Sea, known for their crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs. The Cayman Islands are composed of three separate islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman.

Explore George Town: The Heart of Grand Cayman

George Town is the vibrant capital city of Grand Cayman. Situated on the western side of the island, it serves as a bustling hub for both locals and visitors alike. The city offers a unique blend of Caribbean charm and modern amenities.

Cruise visitors can easily access George Town as it has a tender port terminal, providing a convenient gateway to explore the town’s attractions.

At George Town, you can take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque waterfront, explore charming local shops, and savor the diverse Caribbean flavors at numerous restaurants. With its colorful architecture and warm hospitality, George Town has a lot to offer for cruise ship travelers.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Grand Cayman?

Cruise ships dock in a bay facing George Town, the largest town in Grand Cayman. In this area, you’ll find three cruise terminals: Royal Watler Cruise Terminal, North Terminal, and South Terminal. These terminals are located in close proximity to each other along Harbour Drive, right in the heart of the city.

The terminals in Grand Cayman are specifically called tender terminals. This means that larger cruise ships stay anchored away from the shore, and passengers are taken to land on smaller boats, the tenders.

How to travel around Grand Cayman

Taxis offer a convenient mode of transportation around Grand Cayman. If you are arriving by cruise ship, you will find taxis waiting near the terminals to take you around the island. Note that taxis are more expensive when compared to other modes of transportation on the island.

If you’re looking for a quick and cheap way to get around Grand Cayman, public buses are probably the best option. The island’s bus system has 11 routes covering major spots like Seven Mile Beach, Hell, and Rum Point.

The buses are small vans that can fit about 15 people. The drivers are friendly and make sure the ride is safe. To catch a bus, the best option is to head to the central bus depot in George Town, which is a 4-minute walk from the cruise terminal.

The bus depot in George Town is located in Heroes Square and is locally known as the District Bus Depot. The bus depot functions as the central hub for color-coded buses that operate across all districts of Grand Cayman. These buses run daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and until 1 a.m. on Fridays. Keep in mind that bus stops are few and far between. If you want, you can flag down a bus from any location along its route.

Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman

Regarded as one of the Caribbean’s top beaches, Seven Mile Beach is a must-see if you’re cruising to Grand Cayman. Despite its name, the beach is in fact only 6 miles (10 km) long. It’s around 2.7 miles (4.3 km) from the cruise port in George Town.

Seven Mile Beach is famous for its expansive shoreline, powdery white sand, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. Along the shore, you’ll find a wide range of resorts and hotels, including well-known names such as The Ritz-Carlton and Marriott.

Grand Cayman View of the Seven Mile Beach

While the snorkeling options are limited at this beach, there are a few worth noting. The two most well-known are the Wreck of the Gamma and USS Kittiwake, which are two shipwrecks that have resulted in a beautiful artificial reef.

The three most popular spots on Seven Mile Beach are Governor’s Beach, Cemetery Beach, and Public Beach. As a general rule, the further north you go, the more peaceful and sandy the beach becomes.

Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach

For those who want a relaxing day out at the beach, consider visiting Rum Point. It is located an hour away from the cruise terminal in George Town. Found on the northern part of the island, the spot is famous for its white-sand beach and relaxing atmosphere.

At Rum Point, the water is clear, warm, and shallow, making it ideal for swimming. Since there isn’t any coral or marine life, it’s not the best snorkeling spot.

The site itself has a bar, restaurant, and souvenir shop. For those seeking adventure, kayak and jet ski rentals are available, while those looking to unwind can enjoy the comfort of hammocks and beach huts.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park in Grand Cayman

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is a top spot to explore on the island’s eastern side. The park is the world’s only home to the endangered Grand Cayman blue iguana.

There are various distinct areas within the park, each featuring its own special attractions and themes. These include the Visitor’s Center, Floral Garden, Orchid Boardwalk, Xerophytic Garden, Heritage Garden, Woodland Trail, and the Children’s Garden.

The Visitor’s Center is the main entrance spot to the park, featuring a two story Cayman-architectural building. Inside the building, you will find a gift shop where you can receive a free map of the park.

In the Floral Garden, you can explore a stunning variety of flowers displaying colors ranging from red, orange, yellow, white, blue, purple, and lavender. This section of the park is truly a visual delight.

At the Orchid Boardwalk, you can enjoy the sight of many colorful orchids from around the world, including four endemic to the island. The boardwalk itself is 600 ft (183 m) long. Additionally, you will find a xerophytic garden, a stunning natural habitat where resilient desert plants thrive in arid conditions.

The Heritage Garden offers a fascinating opportunity to explore and discover the plants that have shaped the history of Grand Cayman. Here, you can explore a traditional Caymanian house, providing you with a glimpse into life as it was in the past.

The Woodland Trail forms a 1 mile (1.6 km) loop that leads you to the blue iguana section of the park. Additionally, the Children’s Garden is a great space to keep your kids entertained, featuring a splash park, a pond, and some play structures.

Visit Hell, Grand Cayman

Hell in Grand Cayman

Hell is a popular, uniquely named natural attraction located around 25 minutes drive north of the cruise port. The name ‘Hell’ was chosen due to its resemblance to what people imagined hell to look like.

The site is a small expanse of black, jagged limestone formations that stick out from the ground. The formations are enveloped by a lush forest, resulting in an interesting visual contrast.

Hell is free and open to the public at all times. You can purchase there shirts and magnets with quirky phrases such as ‘I’ve been to Hell and back!’. There’s even a post office, so consider sending a postcard from there to someone you know for a good laugh!

During the hike, you’ll have the opportunity to observe numerous native plants, including royal palms and silver thatch palms, as well as wildlife like parrots, butterflies, snakes, and crabs.

The Mastic Trail is located within the Mastic Reserve, a dedicated area focused on conserving the largest expanse of uninterrupted forest in Grand Cayman.

If you want more of a guided experience, you may want to explore the trail with a knowledgeable tour guide.

Note that this trail is not recommended for younger children or elderly individuals. Additionally, it’s advisable to bring mosquito spray and appropriate walking shoes.

Cayman Crystal Caves

Cayman Crystal Caves Grand Cayman

On the North Side of the island, you’ll find the Cayman Crystal Caves, a must-visit attraction that was only recently opened. The only way to explore this attraction is through a guided tour. The tour takes you on a 1.5 hour walking expedition through three breathtaking caves and the surrounding lush rainforest.

Inside the caves, you’ll find stunning stalagmites and stalactites that have formed over millions of years. Don’t be surprised if you come across some cave-dwelling animals such as bats and frogs as well. The highlight of the visit for many people is the third cave, which features a large lake.

The rainforest that surrounds the area is equally stunning, showcasing a variety of captivating trees, plants, and wildlife like iguanas and parrots. Make sure to bring some bug spray, as the area is abundant with mosquitoes.

Interestingly, these caves served as hideouts and shelters for pirates many centuries ago. It’s even rumored that these caves contain treasures buried by pirates!

Pedro St. James

Pedro St. James in Grand Cayman

Pedro St. James is the oldest stone building on the island, originally constructed in 1780 by an Englishman using Jamaican slave labor. At that time, with most people living in small thatch houses, the construction of such a building was viewed as a remarkable feat.

Over time, the building transitioned into the primary residence of the Cayman Islands’ parliament. As it gradually became more run down, the government, recognizing its historical significance, made the decision to acquire and restore it to its original grandeur in 1990.

It has since evolved into one of the most popular attractions on the island, showcasing the island’s rich history. When entering, you’ll be welcomed with a 3D film and a guided tour of the building.

Go Shopping in George Town

Shops in George Town in Grand Cayman

George Town offers a wide range of shopping options, particularly appealing to cruise ship passengers in the mood for a shopping spree. The island is also known for its duty-free shopping.

Camana Bay stands out as the go-to shopping hub—a lively waterfront district with a variety of different shops. Additionally, the area features a collection of restaurants and hosts a weekly farmer’s market. The combination of its picturesque surroundings and diverse shopping options ensures a delightful and lasting experience for visitors.

There’s also the Cayman Craft Market, the perfect place for purchasing jewelry, paintings, and handmade goods. Bayshore Mall is another shopping spot that sets itself apart as a high-end destination. The mall offers a variety of luxurious items, such as jewelry and watches, coupled with a diverse selection of restaurants. Some of the jewelry on the island is crafted from caymanite, a unique and locally sourced semi-precious stone known for its unique patterns and vibrant colors.

West Shore Center is another excellent mall that houses a variety of shops, resorts, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants.

National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

Tortuga Rum Cake Factory

Rum cake holds a special place as one of the most iconic culinary delights in the Cayman Islands. Originally invented by the founders of the Tortuga Rum Cake Factory, it gained immense popularity on the island over the years.

Due to this increasing demand, a specialized rum cake factory was established in 1987, currently producing over 5,000 cakes daily. The factory is located in the center of George Town, just 1.4 miles (2.2 km) from the cruise port.

You can take a tour of the rum cake factory to see how these iconic cakes are made and even try some samples or purchase cakes.

Grand Cayman is a paradise for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. While here for a cruise day in port, don’t miss out on exploring the wonder of the USS Kittiwake and the haunting beauty of the Wreck of The Gamma. These two iconic shipwrecks are waiting to be discovered beneath the island’s coastal waters. You might also want to dive into the vibrant Great Barrier Reef for a breathtaking underwater experience, or head to Starfish Point for an encounter with colorful red and orange starfish.

USS Kittiwake

The USS Kittiwake is a former US Navy submarine rescue vessel that was deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef and dive site. The shipwreck is situated roughly 0.5 miles (0.8 km) out from the northern part of Seven Mile Beach.

The sunken ship’s depth varies from roughly 15 ft (4.5 m) at its shallowest to 65 ft (19.8 m) at its deepest. Seasoned divers have the chance to explore all five decks of the USS Kittiwake.

At this dive site, you’ll find a wide range of animals, such as fire worms, shrimp, eels, stingrays, and even turtles.

Keep in mind that accessing this dive site requires a boat excursion due to the extensive distance and regular ship traffic.

With an average depth of around 10 feet (3 meters) and some shallower sections measuring just 3 feet (0.9 meters), the barrier reef provides an accessible yet diverse underwater landscape. Snorkeling enthusiasts can encircle the area while gazing at the 10 ft (3 m) drop-off, where there are even more starfish. Note that there is some boat traffic, so be careful when snorkeling around the area.

It is recommended to access this reef from the Lobster Pot Dive Center, which is around 0.6 miles (0.8 km) from the cruise port in George Town. At the reef, you’ll encounter a diverse array of sea life, including butterflyfish, turtles, and stingrays, amidst various colorful reef formations. The water is around 15 ft (4.5 m) deep. grand cayman cruise port address

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, an overseas U.K. territory in the Caribbean Sea. Though overfishing virtually eliminated the native turtle population in the 18th century, today the Cayman Turtle Centre on Grand Cayman teaches visitors about conservation efforts as well as offers the chance to see some species of the reptile up close. Wildlife encounters are popular and plentiful on this island; they include snorkeling with stingrays, swimming with dolphins and spying the brightly colored residents of the aptly named Starfish Point beach. A unique photo opportunity can be found on an excursion to Hell, a rock formation comprising a stretch of jagged black limestone peaks. While the idyllic Seven Mile Beach is the place to be for sunbathing and relaxing strolls, adventurous types can discover the island's scenery on horseback, Jet Skis and helicopter tours as well as submarine and glass-bottom boat rides.

George Town, Grand Cayman

Experience the best of recreation and leisure with your family in grand cayman—a destination famous for both., destination details, things to see and do, port adventures, travel information.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

  • I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
  • I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
  • My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

grand cayman cruise port address

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

grand cayman cruise port address

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

grand cayman cruise port address

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

grand cayman cruise port address

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

grand cayman cruise port address

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

grand cayman cruise port address

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.
