The traditional Ayurveda healing methods and exercises vary from Ayurvedic steam baths and saunas to meditation, acupuncture, energy medicine and yoga. Based on herbs and diet, it was the regions only treatment method until the introduction of western medication.

"Ayurveda" which derives from ancient Sanskrit means ‘’the Science of life’’ which has a holistic approach to the ways the body and mind can be treated. Ayurveda consists of three vital forces – Vata (wind), Pita (fire) and Kapha (earth).Ayurveda is known for its amazing healing methods for certain illnesses which even surpasses western medica- tion practices, and Ayurveda treatment methods have captured the western world and most tourists have recognized Sri Lanka as their destination of choice for medication.

Specialized instructors and trained staff are based in every luxury hotel to look into the visitor’s needs, from Ayurveda body massages to Ayurveda steam baths and Ayurveda herbal baths. Some of these Ayurveda resorts possess ‘’ beheth oru’’ which dates back into the ancient times, immersing the individual in a boat filled with herbs and medicinal drugs plants to rejuvenate, refresh, and heal the body.

Visitors to wellness establishments in Sri Lanka are focused on treatment for weight loss, stress relief, detoxing to get away from their busy and stressful life styles in their countries. Most tourists like to experience the powers of meditation and yoga to maintain a perfect mental health and a healthy lifestyle. To promote these elements of wellness tourism, luxury spas, Ayurveda products, herbal treatments, and meditation centers are available in star class hotels, boutique hotels and luxury villas across the island. Each of these establishments are closely monitored by Sri Lanka Tourism to ensure quality of products and services.

In wellness tourism, a healthy and nutritious diet is also a key factor. Providing organic food products, and looking towards a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables can be very beneficial for health conscious travelers. Most of the Ayurveda hotels in Sri Lanka only serve white fish. In this regard Sri Lanka Tourism contributes to promote spice gardens, herbs and spices to create awareness of authentic and healthy Sri Lankan cuisine and its health benefits.

Since Ayurveda is concerned with treating the inside as well as outside the human body, one can enjoy the authentic Sri Lankan cuisine prepared in the Ayurveda manner, which are freshly harvested and prepared using authentic herbs and spices sourced locally. In Ayurveda, food is classified into six taste categories: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. To receive a proper nutritional balance, Ayurveda philosophy recommends all these categories in every meal.

Holistic wellness such as Yoga and meditation have also gained immense popularity over the years in wellness tourism. For those who seek the inner peace of mind and relief from mental tension, these elements tend to be highly productive, and specialized instructors and trained staff are widely available to look into visitor’s needs.

The wellness tourism sector in Sri Lanka is heading towards rapid growth but has to be nurtured carefully in collaboration with the industry stake holders from both government and private sector. Potential new markets for traditional medicine include Gulf /Russian federation countries, Eastern Europe, the far east and Australia. The government has recognized wellness tourism as a key sector for investors. Wellness tourism can be considered as a niche market for the country because of its potential to attract foreign investment and revenue generation.

While wellness tourism was once single dimensional and was restricted to pampering spa vacations, nowadays wellness travel includes many combinations of healthy experiences including eating, cooking, exercise and meditation.

Sri Lanka has the potential of being successful in marketing Ayurveda products to tourists who like to experience the relaxing aroma of Ayurveda products. Sri Lanka already has exclusive and local Ayurveda brands that are exported in order to popularize traditional Sri Lankan Ayurveda overseas.

Among the recommendations made by the international trade center for the development of medical and wellness tourism,Sri Lanka has positioned itself as one of the authentic Ayurveda wellness destinations in the world for development, production, and export of Ayurveda linked cosmetic and supplementary products to the global market. With the wellness tourism rapidly growing to be a promising sector, Sri Lanka has a huge potential of becoming a wellness tourism hub.

Wellness tourism is a fast growing sector of the global tourism industry, with increasingly more visitors looking for wellness experiences to add to their travel itineraries. Wellness does not only include Ayurvedic treatments or spa therapies, but also wholesome food experiences, yoga, meditation, spiritual rejuvenation and a host of other health and wellbeing related activities. The Global Wellness Institute estimates wellness travel at $639 billion, with a growth rate of 6.5% per year.

Here in Sri Lanka, wellness tourism takes on a whole new meaning because of the island’s historic connection to Ayurveda. Visitors who come to Sri Lanka are keen to experience Ayurvedic treatments, go on retreats to remote locations, rest and relax during their time here.

According to Travel Weekly, a trusted voice in the global travel industry, coming out of the Covid-19 crisis has shown us that more travellers are seeking specialized experiences with wellness as a priority.

There are two different kinds of wellness tourism:

  • Inner wellness tourism
  • Physical wellness tourism

Inner wellness is enhancing one’s emotional, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing. Physical wellness tourism includes visits to a spa, treatments, massages, yoga and detoxification. In Sri Lanka, wellness tourism is a combination of both, a classic example being Ayurveda.

Careers in Wellness and Ayurveda

Find out more about what a career in wellness tourism looks like.

Ayurvedic Practitioner: An Ayurvedic Practitioner is usually a medical doctor who has studied Ayurveda. He/she will possess a wealth of experience and knowledge and would advise an individual in their wellness goals. They may also head a wellness institute.

Yoga Instructor: The main duty of the yoga instructor is to lead a group in yoga sessions and devise curriculums that will lead them through the various levels of yoga. This individual may have to engage in administrative work and may teach individual classes.

Massage Therapist: A Massage Therapist performs therapeutic massages on clients. They may use essential oils and age-old techniques to relieve stress, pain, and other ailments. Ayurvedic Massage Therapists on the other hand use ayurvedic concoctions and methods. Their aim however is the same. Most hotels and resorts have their own spas and employ Massage Therapists.

Meditation Teacher: Although the job title uses the word teacher, a Meditation Teacher is usually an individual who guides a person to achieve mental clarity, stability, a sense of peace and calm through meditative practices.

Pilates Instructor: Like a yoga instructor, a Pilates instructor will lead special classes in exercise, mindful meditation, stretching, and most importantly the Pilates fitness program. As part of their job they will have to devise programs and undertake admin work.

Fitness Instructor: A fitness instructor is also known as a personal trainer. These individuals will help clients achieve their fitness or weight loss goals. They are usually certified, highly skilled and work in gymnasiums in hotels and across other establishments such as resorts.

Nutritionist: A huge part of wellness and wellbeing is based on being healthy. To be healthy one needs to consume nutritious food. A Nutritionist will guide a person in selecting foods that suit their fitness goals. Sometimes a Nutritionist will also be able to diagnose nutritional deficiencies or ailments related to nutrition and offer suitable solutions such as diet plans. Wellness focussed resorts and spas employ Nutritionists to support their clients’ dietary and lifestyle changes.

Career Progression

Unlike most other departments and professions, job roles within the wellness tourism industry are not interchangeable. One cannot be an Ayurvedic Massage Therapist today and a Nutritionist the following week. Each of these job roles have vastly different skills sets, knowledge and experience. Positions such as Fitness Trainers and Ayurvedic Practitioners require certifications and membership in professional bodies.

As mentioned earlier, one does not progress from one job title to another. So, a promotion would merely be from a deputy or assistant position to the main title. For instance, from an Assistant Massage Therapist to the Main Therapist. A promotion such as this would require that the individual learns a new set of skills.

Knowledge and Skills

Ayurvedic Practitioner: Unlike an MBBS, you need to follow BAMS which stands for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. It is usually a five year and six month program. Just like medicine, it is a rigorous study. Sri Lanka being a home for Ayurvedic medicine, there are options for a plethora of study on the subject which are accredited nationally and recognized.

  • Good knowledge of Ayurveda
  • Communication skills
  • Soft skills
  • Research skills
  • Compassionate and caring
  • A person who is confident about their treatments

Yoga Instructor: If you are serious about a career as a yoga trainer you will need to complete a training program. A degree in fitness or health sciences will help you, but it’s not an appropriate substitute. A specialized training program or certification in yoga is compulsory. The 200-hour teacher training program developed and accredited by the Yoga Alliance (www.yogaalliance.org) is widely accepted. Graduates of this program can become registered yoga teachers (RYT).

  • Speak English confidently
  • Be a people person
  • Excellent social skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Team player
  • Creative thinker
  • Passion for travelling
  • Eager to continue learning

Massage Therapist: To become a Massage Therapist you need to complete both theoretical study and practical study. You need to complete a massage therapy program which will teach you medical terminologies, massage ethics, physiology and anatomy. Thereafter, you need to complete practical requirements to make up the number of hours. You will also need to follow a licensing examination to become certified. There are a number of international and professional associations that you can become a member of.

  • Be well-groomed
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Judgment and perception
  • Good hygiene habits
  • Be eager to learn

Meditation Teacher: There is a growing demand for highly trained and accredited Meditation Teachers across the world. But just as there is a demand, it is also highly competitive, and a love for meditation alone is insufficient for you to rise above the rest. Apart from a diploma after school, you will need to follow Meditation Teacher trainer courses and become certified. There are also a series of Meditation Teacher certifications.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A people person
  • Be able to work to deadlines
  • Be understanding with each client and case
  • Have in-depth knowledge of meditation practices
  • Be eager to learn more

Pilates Instructor: Like a Yoga Instructor, a Pilates Instructor requires certification, having followed a specialized training program. A well known professional association is the Pilates Method Alliance, for Pilates teachers. You will need to gain a Certified Pilates Teacher (CPT) designation from here.

  • Great communication skills
  • Be able to lead a class easily
  • An excellent knowledge of fitness and health
  • Pleasant personality and ability to work well under pressure
  • Eager to learn more about the craft

Fitness Instructor: Becoming a Fitness Instructor or Personal Trainer can be a lucrative career path. Personal training is a flexible occupation and one that you can get into once you’ve completed a basic diploma in health sciences after school. It is becoming more important to have a degree in fitness, or a professional certification in the very least. Some organizations may check if you have first aid and CPR certification.

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Be a people person and enjoy socializing
  • Be able to motivate individuals or groups to reach their potential
  • Create plans and arrange exercise
  • Be able to use fitness equipment and teach another person
  • First aid and CPR

Nutritionist: A certificate in health subjects or a diploma alone is not sufficient to become a Nutritionist. You need to have a Bachelor’s Degree in health, nutrition or a relevant field. After your degree, you can follow an internship program to become specialized in this field.

  • Be friendly and approachable
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to be non-judgmental
  • Keen interest in health matters
  • Ability to motivate others

Hiring Process

Like other job opportunities, there is a process through which one is hired to these positions. Because these positions not only require academic qualifications, Human Resource Managers will be keen to see if you have positive references from previous employers, membership in professional associations, and if you are still eager and continuing to upskill.

Salary Scale

As mentioned earlier, as these are skilled positions, individuals are well paid and looked after by the employer. The starting salary ranges from Rs.35,000 upwards to Rs.100,000 or more.

Sri Lanka Has a New Walking Trail With Wild Forests and Centuries-old Wellness Retreats — What to Know

The hiking path covers 186 miles, visiting towns and locations rarely seen by travelers previously.

Heavy clouds rolled overhead, clearing out the day’s humidity in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. Below a forested hillside, tea pickers in colorful saris moved among rows of electric-green bushes, as if the scene were set to high contrast. In the distance, plumes of smoke carried the scent of roasting tea leaves.

I was walking the Pekoe Trail, a long-distance hiking path that opened in Sri Lanka last year. Largely made up of existing paths used to travel between tea fields and factories, it winds 186 miles through estates and national parks. The trail, which connects 80 hamlets and villages that see few foreign visitors, was designed to bolster Sri Lanka’s tourism industry in the aftermath of the terrorist bombings that took place in the capital, Colombo, on Easter Day 2019.

More a walking holiday than a backpacking expedition, the entire trail is designed to take a laid-back 22 days, with hikers covering an average of nine miles each day. For those who don’t have three weeks to spare, it’s possible to link up separate sections with the help of a guide and driver, as I did on my five-day trip.

After arriving in Colombo, I boarded a three-hour train to the ancient city of Kandy, where the trail starts. I spent my first night at the 10-suite W15 Hanthana , where a wraparound veranda overlooked misty mountains topped with stupas and temples. The next morning, after a late breakfast of string hoppers (rice noodles) and curry, I set out on the first segment on my route: 7.5 miles of easy dirt road that cut through colorful villages and the Hanthana mountain range, a popular hiking spot, before ending in the small town of Galaha.

I was accompanied by Miguel Cuñat, the sustainable-tourism consultant who designed the trail. “You know that saying ‘To understand an island’s soul, head to its interior?’” he asked me as we ate mangoes from a roadside stand during one of our breaks. I knew what he meant. Like many visitors to Sri Lanka, I had only spent time along the beautiful coastline, and it wasn’t until this hike that I began to sense the island’s true character.

On my second day, Cuñat and I walked uphill through a steep pine forest and then followed a ridge that overlooked the Knuckles mountain range and the snaking Mahaweli River. Thick fog in the distance signaled the looming monsoons. Two hours later, the forest opened up to the Loolecondera , Sri Lanka’s first tea estate, which dates back to 1867.

From there it was a 56-mile drive to Goatfell , a beautiful bungalow that overlooks Ceylon tea fields. I dipped my tired legs into the infinity pool, then read by the living-room fire as the rains rolled in.

The next morning, it was a quick drive to Nuwara Eliya, a picturesque city that is a popular getaway for many Sri Lankans. We hiked six miles through a tableau that felt like the quintessential image of the countryside. Women moved through tea fields, gently plucking only the youngest buds and leaves from each branch to assure the highest quality of Ceylon black tea. Many of the tea pickers are descendants of the indentured South Indians brought over by the British colonists in the 19th century, and the work is still punishing. Under wages set by the government, they must pick about 40 pounds of tea each day to earn just over $3.

While Nuwara Eliya is the official end of the Pekoe Trail, hikers can follow the route in any order they like. So, after a tea break, we drove 60 minutes to Horton Plains National Park, where a windswept plain was circled by a cloud forest. We strolled under a troop of bear monkeys swinging from trees before the dense canopy opened up to a switchback called the Devil’s Staircase, which overlooks the lush Udaweriya Valley.

That night we slept at Thotalagala , a seven-suite retreat in Haputale where Thomas Lipton, the Scottish merchant, began his Lipton Tea empire in the late 19th century. The next morning, I took a tuk-tuk to a panoramic overlook called Lipton’s Seat, where Sir Thomas is said to have sipped tea and looked out over his estate. The view has not changed much.

Courtesy of The Pekoe Trail

For our final hike, we drove to a modest village, Makulella, then climbed through a eucalyptus forest to a ridge dotted with Buddhist temples and waterfalls until we reached the Nine Arch Bridge. The famous viaduct turned out to be just as dramatic in real life as it is in photos. While other tourists arrived in tuk-tuks, it was satisfying to approach the bridge on foot, alongside children in starched school uniforms.

The people behind the Tourism Resilience Project — which established the trail and is funded by the European Union and the U.S. Agency for International Development — hope it can empower villagers to make a living from the new route, perhaps by operating a juice bar or tea-tasting room for hikers. “We want the people living and working there to feel like they’re a part of it,” said Vishadini Fernando, a project manager. The vision includes giving visitors more chances to learn from locals.

It was just this kind of understanding that soothed me during the night I spent at Thotalagala. I arrived after dark and was led down a grand hallway that opened onto a manicured lawn. Beyond an infinity pool, a fire burned, engulfing trees along the hotel’s edge. But after having hiked the highlands for several days, where the sight of smoke rising from small patches of forest is a near constant, I had recalibrated my relationship to seeing fires in nature.

A tea farmer had taught me about controlled burning: always simmering, never boiling over. I took my tea, fell asleep, and by morning, a small patch of earth just beyond the estate’s periphery was scorched, but everything else — including the view of mist-shrouded tea hills spilling into a lush valley — remained beautifully intact.

A version of this story first appeared in the April 2024 issue of  Travel + Leisure  under the headline "High Tea. "

wellness tourism sri lanka

Sri Lanka has been named the top destination for solo female travel in 2024, by globally renowned timeout.com.  Solo female travel has seen a surge in popularity, with a recent survey revealing that over half of Gen Z women are contemplating travelling abroad alone. As more women seek adventure, cultural immersion, and unforgettable experiences, the question arises: Where to go and what to know? Numerous countries have earned a reputation for being safe and welcoming for solo female travellers, offering established backpacker routes, amicable locals and opportunities for both social interaction and serene solitude.  The global spotlight on Sri Lanka comes as a testament to the country’s appeal and suitability for women travelling alone.  A few countries are known to be relatively safe and easy to navigate for women looking for an adventure, with well-trodden backpacker routes, friendly locals and the chance to meet new people – or spend some good quality alone time. Following closely behind Sri Lanka in the rankings were Portugal, Czechia, Japan, Guatemala, Vietnam, Australia, Greece, and New Zealand.  Describing Sri Lanka, timeout.com states, “The tiny teardrop island of Sri Lanka is like India in miniature but with its own unique charm, making it the perfect first stop for female travellers wanting to dip into South Asia. It’s popular with backpackers and perfectly sized for a week or a month spent exploring the ancient UNESCO-listed sites like Dambulla and Sigiriya or visiting tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya. And for some blissful downtime, the golden beaches of Arugam Bay, Mirissa, and Hikkaduwa promise beachfront hostels, surfing, and delicious local food.” Time Out Group is a leading global media and hospitality business that inspires and enables people to discover and experience the best of the city. Time Out Media’s multiple digital and physical channels span websites, mobile, social media, videos and live events.  From the beginning of 2023, Sri Lanka has continually basked in the global spotlight for its unique tourism offerings and its scenic beauty.

Sri Lanka has claimed the coveted title of the number one destination for solo female travellers in 2024, according to Timeout.com. While several countries are known for being safe and accommodative  for solo female travellers, offering well-established backpacker routes, and friendly locals, Sri Lanka stands out as a top choice for solo female travellers in 2024.

One of the highlights of Sri Lanka for solo female travellers is its abundance of UNESCO-listed ancient sites. From the awe-inspiring rock fortress of Sigiriya to the magnificent cave temples of Dambulla, the country’s rich history and cultural heritage provide ample opportunities for exploration and discovery.

For those seeking a break from historical marvels, Sri Lanka offers pristine beaches and coastal towns that cater to solo travellers. Destinations like Arugam Bay, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa boast beachfront hostels, opportunities for surfing, and tantalising local cuisine, providing the perfect backdrop for relaxation and socialising.

Moreover, Sri Lanka’s reputation for hospitality and safety further enhances its appeal to solo female travellers. The warmth and friendliness of the locals, combined with the country’s relatively low crime rates, create an environment conducive to memorable and worry-free experiences for women exploring the island on their own.

World Bank raises Sri Lanka's growth forecast to 2.2% for 2024

THE World Bank raised its forecast for Sri Lanka’s economy on Tuesday (Apr 2), projecting growth of 2.2 per cent for 2024 as the crisis-hit nation makes a faster-than-expected recovery from its worst financial crisis in decades.

Sri Lanka secured a US$2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in March last year, helping it temper inflation, increase state revenues, and rebuild foreign exchange reserves after its economy crumpled in 2022.

The IMF programme helped Sri Lanka’s economy stabilise, and it is expected to return to growth this year after contracting 2.3 per cent in 2023.

The World Bank, in its latest report on South Asia, raised its growth forecast for Sri Lanka by 50 basis points. Real GDP growth was also expected to strengthen further to 2.5 per cent in 2025, with modest recoveries in reserves, remittances and tourism, the development bank’s report said.

“Growth is projected to be positive in 2024, and moderate over the medium term – not a quick bounce back,” Richard Walker, senior economist at the World Bank, told reporters.

Sri Lanka defaulted on its overseas debt in May 2022 after a severe shortage of foreign exchange reserves triggered the worst financial crisis since independence from Britain in 1948, sending inflation rocketing to 70 per cent in the following months.

While prices have eased off recently, the World Bank estimates the poverty rate in Sri Lanka will remain above 22 per cent until 2026. It was about 26 per cent in 2023, compared to pre-Covid levels of 11.3 per cent in 2019, the World Bank said.

“Households have been impoverished by a fall in their purchasing power due to high inflation, losses in wages, income and employment, and a drop in remittances,” the report said.

The Indian Ocean island nation secured an agreement in principle with China, India and the Paris Club nations last November to restructure its debt and now needs agreements with each bilateral creditor – a key condition in its IMF bailout.

Sri Lanka, which is due to hold presidential elections in the second half of 2024, would need to complete the debt restructuring before the next IMF review.

“Downside risks remain high, due to limited primary account and reserve buffers... especially with elections and policy fatigue. The other is an insufficiently deep debt restructuring,” Walker said.

South Asia, excluding Afghanistan, was expected to grow 6.1 per cent in 2025, remaining the fastest-growing region in the world for the next two years, with India’s expected growth of 6.6 per cent for fiscal year 2025 leading the way.

The World Bank expects Pakistan’s fiscal year 2024 growth at 1.8 per cent, below the State Bank of Pakistan’s projection of 2 per cent-3 per cent. Real GDP is seen expanding 2.3 per cent in fiscal year 2025, the report said. REUTERS
