A26 closed again five days after major roads shut due to floods and ice - live

Sussex Police say motorists should 'expect hazardous conditions'

  • Updated 01:39, 21 JAN 2023

Icy conditions on the roads today as multiple accidents reported across Sussex (January 17)

The A26 has reopened and then closed again after ice and flooding caused issues across Sussex. The major road - along with the A27 - had been closed for four days in a row.

While the A27 remains open, the A26 has closed again, reports National Highways. A spokesman said: "The A26 in East Sussex is closed in both directions between the A259 (Newhaven) and the A27 (Beddingham) due unsafe road conditions following adverse weather.

"National Highways contractors are on scene however ground water is running onto the road from the surrounding area causing issues with the road surface due to the freezing temperatures. HGV’s intending to travel to the Port of Newhaven are advised to follow the signed diversion and not use ‘Piddinghoe Road’ (via Iford, Southease and Piddinghoe) as this road is not appropriate for HGV traffic."

The A27 reopened eastbound between Lancing and Shoreham after a crash. However, one lane remains closed while complex work continues to resolve issues with floodwater.

National Highways said the lane closure will remain in place throughout the weekend.

End date for the cold weather

With many travel and traffic issues across Sussex being a direct consequence of the cold weather and the freezing temperatures the county has endured over the last few days, many will be pleased to know that the freezing temperatures aren't set to last much longer.

To find out the upcoming forecast for Sussex, read the full story on when the cold weather will end below:

A27 described as being 'complex operation'

The National Highways are yet to provide an update this morning after referring to the issues on the A27 near Lancing as a "complex operation yesterday". In an update on their website, the National Highways said: "The A27 in West Sussex is closed eastbound between the A2025 at Lancing and the A283 at Shoreham whilst a complex operation is ongoing to clear flood water from the road surface.

"Our contractors are working hard to identify the cause of the flooding and clear drainage/ditches, however this is proving challenging. We're working round the clock to clear the road as soon as we can."

Awaiting comment from National Highways

We are currently awaiting an update from the National Highways on the ongoing road closures on the A27 and A26. Teams have been on both roads since the closures to try and deal with the issues while diversions have been in place.

We will bring you updates as soon as we have them.

Update on Sussex roads as evening rush-hour approaches

travel west sussex roads

The Sussex roads are looking very congested this evening (January 19) as rush hour commences across the county. With main roads like the A27 in Lancing remaining shut this evening, motorists should expect a longer commute home than normal.

Unfortunately many of the Sussex roads closed this morning remain that way as cold conditions remain around the county, resulting in icy conditions. Gritting will be done tonight to try and keep the roads as safe as possible.

We will be providing traffic and travel updates throughout the evening and during the night to keep you up to date. To get updates, sign up to our newsletters for information as we have it by pressing here , selecting which newsletter you want to sign up for and entering your email address.

A259 traffic delays

There are some delays on the A259 in Newhaven. Inrix reported: "A259 Brighton Road in both directions partially blocked, slow traffic due to broken down vehicle at Newfield Road."

Sussex MP releases statement on his 'disappointment' over 'havoc' caused by A27 closure

Conservative MP Tim Loughton has commented on the A27 closure and the "havoc" it has caused for his constituents across Adur and Worthing. He has shared his "disappointment" and "anger" on the situation.

A27 very unlikely to open for rush-hour

The A27 is unlikely to open in time for rush-hour today as the National Highways are yet to provide an update this afternoon. The road was originally said to be closed as a result of a burst water main, however it has now been confirmed that instead the closure is a result of groundwater turning to ice.

Their earlier statement this morning read: ""A closure is in place on the A27 near Lancing for safety reasons due to a dangerous combination of flooding and freezing temperatures leading to ice forming on the carriageway. Contractors are on site and we'll be in a better position to provide a full update as to when the road will be reopen again soon."

4.15 billion vehicle miles were travelled on roads in West Sussex in 2022.

Whilst historically significant, the long term trends can be misleading in most cases due to the extraordinary circumstances observed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Vehicle miles travelled in Great Britain have had year-on-year growth in each year between 2011 and 2019. Following a sharp decline in 2020, traffic levels in 2021 and 2022 increased, but 2022 levels still remain lower than the 2016 levels. Therefore, to say traffic has fallen since 2016 would misconstrue as the overall decrease is entirely due to the decline in traffic levels observed during the pandemic.

Data disclaimer.

Traffic figures at the regional and national level are robust, and are reported as National Statistics. However, DfT’s traffic estimates for individual road links and small areas are less robust, as they are not always based on up-to-date counts made at these locations. Where other more up-to-date sources of traffic data are available (e.g. from local highways authorities), this may provide a more accurate estimate of traffic at these locations.

It is the responsibility of the user to decide which data are most appropriate for their purpose, and if DfT road link level traffic estimates are used, to make a note of the limitations in any published material.

Quality flags in data downloads

DfT’s road link level traffic estimates are calculated using a variety of methods, with some methods likely to produce more accurate estimates than others.

The data tables available to download here contain a column - estimation_method – showing the method used to estimate traffic for each location and year. Figures having an estimation method of “Counted” are likely to be more accurate than those marked as “Estimated”, and the latter should be used with caution.

Washouts, flash freezing in some areas after rainstorm

Schools in 4 districts stayed closed because of treacherous morning travel.

A large road washout

Social Sharing

A day and night of rain and wind, followed by a quick drop in temperatures, left many schools closed Thursday, caused washouts, flash flooding and road closures in some areas, and disrupted life in Sussex with another flood.

Four districts kept their schools closed on Thursday, and at noon, Nackawic elementary, middle and high schools closed because of a power outage.

Flash freeze and rainfall warnings were issued by Environment Canada early Thursday, but by afternoon, no warnings remained.

In Sussex, at least 12 roads were closed because of severe flooding.

An overflowing stream and washed-out road west of Salisbury

Farther northeast, near the Salisbury area, a culvert on Route 112 washed out, closing that section of the road.

There was flooding elsewhere in southeastern New Brunswick, including in the community of Hillsborough, where some water was still over the main road at midday.

According to the N.B. Power website, around 4,000 customers are without power, down from 7,500 in the morning.

Temperatures that were as high as 11 C in some areas on Wednesday had fallen to between -6 C and -14 C by Thursday afternoon.
